Deuteronomy 1-3

Amen. All right, everybody.

Good morning. We're in Deuteronomy chapter 1.

Deuteronomy 1 · chapter mention

We're going to dive into verses 19 through 40. 6 prayerfully and

then. Topical over chapter 2, a little

bit on chapter 3 and then maybe. We'll be done.

So that's our. Goal this morning.

We'll see how the Lord reveals it to us.

We're again. Our main passage this morning is

Deuteronomy chapter 1, verses 19 through 46, as Pastor Aaron

Deuteronomy 1:19–46

mentioned. Last week we're we're we're in

the middle or the beginning of a sermon that Moses is preaching

to the second generation of Israelites.

Here. So remember the the first did

not go. They're there.

They're on the the cusp of the promised land literally right

there looking at the promised land and, and, and we see from

our passage this morning and what we know from the Bible is

they, they didn't do it that they did not go up to the

promised land because they, they did that they, they, they the,

the first generation died off and the.

Second generation is is. Here.

And so Moses is speaking to the second generation.

He's reminding them of what happened in the first

generation. And then we're going to see in,

in, in after 2A shift of what's going on currently with the

second generation of Israelites. And so that's, that's kind of

the flow that we see this morning.

And so hopefully, hopefully that's that's what we see.

But instead of stepping forward in, in faith the, the first

generation, they hesitated. And what they did was they did a

few things right. We're going to look at that this

morning prayerfully, by by God's grace, we're going to look at 2

primary things. All right, if you.

Take a note Here we go how disobedience is rooted in

unbelief and how disobedience always has a cost.

So. We're going to look at.

This morning, disobedience. We think about our own lives as

we reflect for just a few moments.

So we think about the moments in our own lives that we were

disobedient. To God.

The times he called us to do something and we didn't do those

things, or the times that we did something that we shouldn't have

done, which is the camp I live in more than the other camp, All

right. Just being honest, those of you

that know me know I speak truth right I.

Live in that camp. I do things that I shouldn't do

right? But we all have this idea of

disobedience in our own life. So we're going to look at

disobedience rooted in unbelief and disobedience.

Always has a cost. So disobedience involves

unbelief. We're going to we're going to

look and dissect this together. Let me read just the first

couple of verses. We'll read Deuteronomy chapter

Deuteronomy 1 · chapter mention

1. 19 through 25. Here we go, it says.

Then we set out from Horeb and went through all that.

Great and terrifying wilderness that you saw.

On the way to the Hill Country of the Amorite, says the Lord.

Our God commanded us. We came to Kadesh, Barnea and I.

Said to you, You have come to the Hill Country of the

Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us.

See, the Lord your God has set the land before you go up.

Take possession as the Lord the God of your Father's.

Have told you. Do not.

Fear or be dismayed. And then all of you came.

Near me and said. Let us send men.

Before. Us that they may explore.

The land for us. And bring us word again of the

way by which we must go up, and the cities into which we shall

come. The things seem good to me.

And I took 12 men from you, one man from each tribe, and they

turned and went up into the. Hill Country and came.

To the Valley of Eskel and spied it out.

And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land,

and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said.

It is a good. Land that the Lord our God is

giving us. So two things, two ways that

they had unbelief. First, they added to God's

instructions. They added to God's

instructions. We see that in 19 through 22.

They wanted to go out and scout out the way they should enter

the land, but yet we don't see that what God's direction to

them, they they add to that. After all, God's plan was very

specific, but it was lacking some details, right?

Do we see that in our own life? When God calls us to do things

we believe in our minds, it's lacking some details.

How are we actually going to get that country?

How are we actually going to do that?

Tell me exactly, step by step, don't we want that?

We want God. To tell us.

All right, first you're going to go through the door and then.

You're going to turn. Left, those are the directions

we want from God. Those are the directions we seek

from God. And yet God says, go up, take

the land, we'll figure it out, right?

He's got it all figured out. And yet the people, they want to

know everything about it. But how many of us find God's

directions sometimes? Lacking in in in our own minds.

On the surface though, this may sound OK, this may sound like a

like a good idea. Remember, after all, all they

wanted them to do was go up and scope out where's the best place

for us to enter into this massive land?

Where's the where's the the weak spot that we may begin our

journey. We want to start off with a win,

right? It started off as being OK, but

not really because it added to God's word and what God had said

to them. But but God never said to them

scout out the land. It was actually very simple,

very simple in verse 21, see the Lord your God has set the land

before you go up, take possession.

That's it. Easy to follow, and yet we

wanted to add to. And yet that's exactly.

What we do in our own lives. God calls us to do something

great for him in his might, not in our might.

And yet we try to add. 2. It's always better to simply

obey God's commands without adding our own safeguards.

How many of us have children and we've gone bowling and we have

those amazing things on the side, right?

Those amazing things that actually.

Let them get. Pins, they call those bumper

guards, right? We have those bumper guards, but

at some point in our lives we get rid of those bumper guards.

We get rid of those because we look silly, partly, partly

because we get better at it. And yet that's what God has

called us to do. We need to get better at obeying

God's Word. Stop adding to, stop taking

away, but obeying God's words. Let's get rid of those

safeguards, those bumper guards that we like, that keep us safe

and comfortable in our own comfort zone and allow God to do

something great through US. True faith requires immediate

dis or. Immediate obedience.

True faith requires immediate obedience, delayed obedience.

Is disobedience that's. Kind of where?

We see ourselves and just as Israelites.

We too can rationalize. Our hesitations.

God's plan they. Don't need our modifications.

His wisdom is sufficient. Our job is very.

Simple. You guys ready?

2 words. This is our job.

Trust. Obey.

That's it. Clear direction from God.

He calls us to do something. We we have but two things to do.

Trust and obey, and yet we see ourselves adding to all

throughout our lives. Second thing, not only did they

add to God's instructions, but they chose fear over faith.

Fear over faith. We see that in verses 23 through

33. But again, they didn't need to

scout out the land. He was going to fight for them.

He was going to intercede for them.

All they had to do was trust and obey and God does the rest.

That's that's exactly what we see in this passage.

But they saw giants. And they were afraid.

They saw something that they could not overpower in their own

self and through the things that they had.

They thought the task was too big.

We can't go up. Against Giants.

We're not that good. We're good, but we're not that

good, right? But we cannot defeat Giants.

And the answer is. Absolutely you can't.

You can't, but through God all. Things are possible, you see.

He says again, go up, go up. I love this passage.

It says in verse 21. He says take possession as the

Lord the God of your Father's has told you.

And he says do not fear or be dismayed.

Why does he say don't fear and why does he say don't be?

Dismayed because they were. Right, he he says that because

they were they were fearful, they were very distressed

because they they didn't think that they could do what God has

called. Them to do.

And yet we see ourselves in that.

All the time. Hebrews chapter 3 verse 19 tells

Hebrews 3:19

us so. We see that they were unable to

enter because of unbelief. That's what the passage tells us

in Hebrews. They had unbelief.

They could not believe that God was bigger than a giant.

And then we look back and we, we, we think of all the things

that, that God had already done for them, right?

They, they were witnesses to the plague.

They were witnesses to dry land. Across the sea there were

witnesses to all this. A year or two earlier, so not

very long, and they've forgotten all about those things that God

did and orchestrated to get them out of Egypt, he says in verse

26. Yet you would not go up but

rebelled. Against the command of the Lord

your God. And here we go, verse 27, me and

you only we're not in tents usually we're in our house.

And heaven help us, we even sometimes bring down our spouse.

We murmur in our tents and we say, because the Lord has hated

us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt to give us into

the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.

God has set us up for failure. That that's that's what it's

saying in a nutshell with the Israelites.

And yet. As we look upon.

Our lives as. We think about our.

Lives in the past. Has God ever set us up for

failure? That's not our God.

That's not the God that you and I serve.

It's easy. It's easy.

Though in our day and age to get our eyes off the Lord and.

Focus upon the Giants. It's easy to to take our eyes

off of him, to focus on the things that are in front of us

and these problems that seem insurmountable, undefeatable,

according to the trustee Internet you can believe.

Everything on the Internet. Amen.

According to the trustee Internet, here is the top five.

I think it's. Five Maybe it's 6.

I don't know. Giants in the American lives The

the the. Insurmountable.

Undefeatable. We don't all fit into all these.

Camps, but maybe we maybe we get into one.

The tendency to choose a life of ease.

Not of work for the Lord. Fear and anxiety Being frozen or

paralyzed by fear, anger and rage.

Uncontrolled temper and bitterness.

Living overextended, either financially or physically.

Unforgiveness and hate. Holding on to resentment, The

last one, the last insurmountable problem that

people have in our American lives is difficulty finding

meaning in life. If we're gonna be honest, some

of us fit that camp when we take our eyes off of God.

And we? Focus on the.

Things of the world, it's easy to allow that giant that lie

from the devil to enter into our hearts and our minds and it

begin to resonate within us and we begin to think that that

might be true, that there is nothing more to this life.

And yet, when we focus upon God, when we focus upon Him,

everything else comes into clear direction.

We are to do but two things, trust and obey, the Word tells

us. The Word tells us that in

Philippians chapter 2. Jesus Christ died a death, even

death, on a cross for you and for me.

So that. At that name every knee shall

bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

You see, we are bought with a price.

We are. Loved by Jesus.

Christ. And that is enough for a purpose

in our life. That's enough to know that.

We are loved, we were bought with a price that our Heavenly

Father loves us so much that He gave His only Son for you and

for me. You see, that is enough for you

and for me. We have got to stop focusing

upon the. Giants of this world.

And start focusing upon God and merely trusting.

And obeying our heavenly. Father, we get an amazing

insight from David who fought an actual giant in first Samuel

1 Samuel 17:47

chapter 17 verse 47, and that all this assembly may know that

the Lord saves not with sword and spear, for the battle is the

Lord's and He. Will give you into our hand.

Oh, that the Israelite nation would have had that when they

stood at the foot heels of the Promised Land.

Yes, there are giants. But my God is much bigger.

Anybody Veggietales fans? My God is bigger than the

boogeyman, right? That is our God.

He is bigger than giants. He says go up, take possession.

We have but two things to do. What are they?

Trust and obey. That's it.

That's pretty easy. Amen.

But it's very difficult, isn't it?

I know, I know, all right. What giant in our life currently

is hindering? Us from doing what the Lord is

clearly calling us to do. What giant in our?

Lives we look. Introspective, just for a few

moments. What giant in our life is

currently hindering? Us from doing what the Lord is

clearly calling us to do. Disobedience involves unbelief.

Now let's look at how disobedience always.

Comes at a cost. Verses. 34 through 40. 6

primarily 30. 4 through 40 they forfeited God's blessings.

Let's look at that. Let's look at that.

And the. Lord heard your words.

And was angered and he swore not one of these men of this evil

generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to

your Father's disobedience always comes at a cost because

of their unbelief and disobedience.

God. Declared that the. 1st

generation of Israelites would not enter the promised land.

Except for Joshua and Caleb, they would not enter into the

Promised Land. This was a.

Direct consequence. Of the lack of trust in God's

promise that said go up and take the land.

And we see that in our own lives when God calls us to do things.

We have a whole list of things that says this.

These are the reasons, in alphabetical order, as to why I

cannot obey what God is clearly calling me to do.

And there are consequences for that.

Unbelief. Slam the door.

To the blessings God had prepared for them.

Disobedience always has consequences.

When we refuse to trust. And obey God.

We risk forfeiting the. Blessing He has in store for us.

So I began to prepare for this sermon.

I began to think about all the many blessings that I've

probably missed out on in my life because I did not trust and

obey. How many blessings in your life

have you missed out because you simply did not trust and obey?

Understand this. Obedience opens the.

Door to God's favor while disobedience closes it.

That's right. Obedience opens the door to

God's favor. While disobedience closes it.

Not only did they forfeit God's blessing, but they also

forfeited God's presence. Let's look at that in 41 through

46. Then you answered me.

You have sinned against the Lord.

We ourselves will go up and fight just as the Lord our God

commanded us. The Lord commanded us to do it.

We're going to do. It it's too late, it's too late.

Sometimes we do the right thing at the wrong time.

Amen. Sometimes we do the right thing

at the wrong time. Sometimes we don't do what we

should do at the right. Time did that come.

Out all right did. That come out in English.

That was close. That's our lives, isn't it?

Because we focus upon the things of the world, we focus upon the

news, we focus upon the things that are are horizontal, and we

lose focus. Of our relationship with God.

We lose focus at the power and the might of our Heavenly Father

who can. Move mountains for us.

He says we will go up and we will fight, just as the Lord our

God commanded us, and everyone of you fastened on his weapons

of war and thought it easy to go up.

Into the Hill Country. And the Lord said to me, say to

them, do not go up or fight for. I am not.

In your midst. Lest you be defeated by your

enemies. So I spoke to you and and you

would not. Listen.

You would not listen. But you rebelled.

Against the command of the Lord and presumptuously went up into

the Hill Country. That's the word we're going to

look at here in just a moment in the Amorites, who lived in that

Hill Country, came out against you and chased.

You as bees do. And beat you down and say as far

as Horma they chased you like bees.

Do Nobody ever seen a YouTube video of a bunch of bees chasing

a guy and he's running for his life?

Neither have I so. Here in verses 41 through 46, we

see the Israelites making a second and even more grievous

mistake. Sometimes that's you and me,

right? We we make mistake upon mistake.

We made a mistake, and instead of going to the Lord and

confessing that sin before the Lord, we say we're going to make

it right. Yeah, right.

It's all right. It's all right.

God says I'm going to make the we, we say we're going to make

this all right. We're we're going to fix this.

That's that's that's our mentality.

And you can see God laughing. OK, you go fix it and you're

going to be running. For your life like.

Bees are chasing you. Right.

Have we ever? Done this.

Let's think about. This in scripture.

We see this in scripture a lot. I'm just going to name a few

just to remind us to get the juices flowing this morning

right. Abraham and Sarah impatient for

the promised air. Sarah gives her her maid Hagar

to Abraham to bear child, resulting in the birth of

Ishmael. Did that go well?

No, that did not go well. But they wanted to fix it

themselves. Saul.

Saul feared facing the Philistines.

Instead of waiting for Samuel the prophet to offer sacrifices,

he took on the role of priest himself.

Did that work out for him? No.

That was the moment he lost the Kingdom.

Jacob and Rebecca desiring the patriarchal blessing.

Jacob, with his mother's help, deceived his blind father Isaac

to steal the birthright from his brother Esau.

All of these our people in the Bible and in our our lives as

well. We're not immune to this.

That wanted to take matters into their own.

Hands, Samson. Frequently took matters into.

His own hands based. On his personal desires.

And violent tendencies. Lot's daughters, let's not go.

Into detail there, let's keep it PG.

This morning, right? But Lot's daughters just think

about that. We're going to take this, we're

going to fix it. We got an idea.

We got an idea. We can fix this right up.

Heaven help us that that's not us.

Confess before the Lord. Lord, I have sinned against you.

Please show me the next steps. In their own strength, they

attempted to invade the land without God's presence or

blessing, despite clear warnings from Moses.

The keyword. Again, here is presumptuously.

It comes from a Hebrew word, and I'm not.

Aaron. So I'm not going to say it.

Which means to act with arrogance or overconfidence,

disregarding God's will, disregarding God's will.

It speaks of their overconfident assumption, they said in this

passage. It will be easy.

It will be easy. We're going to go up there,

we're going to kill them. We're going to take over the

land. We're going to make this right.

Everything's going to be great. Milk and honey will.

Be on the table for dinner, right?

And yet, let's know what happened.

Throughout the Bible, acting presumptuously is connected with

rebellion against God's authority.

There's many, many people, numbers 1530, but the person who

does anything presumptuously, whether he is native born or a

stranger, that one brings reproach on the Lord, and he

shall be cut off from among his people.

It describes actions taken in prideful defiance.

If there's something that we struggle with in our day and

age, it's pride. We, we struggle with pride,

don't we? We, we are very, very prideful.

And we do not like to admit when we're wrong, which I believe is

part of the reason why we do not want to confess our sins before

the Lord and say Lord, I missed it.

I heard you clearly. I disobeyed you.

Please forgive me, Forgive me. It takes humbleness and we are

not very good at being humble. We want everyone to know,

especially on Sunday mornings, if we're going to be honest with

one another, that we've got everything under control.

We look good, we got up early, maybe we even read our Bible

this morning. We had a smile on our face

because everything is going great.

But remember, you're only lying to yourself because God already

knows the truth. God already knows the truth that

you got in an argument with your spouse before you came, that

your child couldn't find their shoes for the 40th time, and

maybe you got a little angry at that.

Am I the only one that does that right?

Acting presumptuously is dangerous because it places our

will above God's will. 2. People, I want you.

To think about we can do this all.

Day long. We're not going to two people I

want you to think about on acting presumptuously.

Would be Eve and Jonah, right? Those two fit that bill pretty

well, don't they? Even Jonah acting

presumptuously, they they put their will above God's will.

And if there's something we're really, really good at, it's

putting our will above God's will, because we know best,

right? The Israelites knew God had told

them not to go up into the land without Him, yet they arrogantly

believed that their own strength could overcome their

disobedience. How often do we make decisions

or take actions in our own strength without seeking God's

guidance, assuming we know best, right?

We know best. We may convince ourselves.

That our intentions are. Good, but good.

Intentions can never replace obedience to God's will.

There are a lot of things that are.

Good in this world that can keep us busy.

A lot of. Things that can keep us busy.

That are good, but are outside God's will for your life, right?

Presumption can show up in various areas.

Let me give you a list. By of no means is.

This an exhaustive list. But this is a list Are you

ready? Career decisions.

We rush ahead with choices, convinced that we know what's

best for us without waiting on God's timing or direction.

We we are ready for a change. So here we go to.

I don't. Even know the websites anymore,

where do you go look for a for a job?

Indeed. Thank you my friend.

So we go to indeed.com and we start putting in our resume.

Right. Let's just see what happens.

Let's see if the Lord answers this prayer right.

Let's not get ahead of the Lord. How about relationships?

We might enter into or leave relationships thinking we know

better than God's plan for us without praying for discernment.

Here's a good one for you. You guys ever heard about 80% of

the work in the church is done by 20%?

Anybody ever heard that? Is that true?

You guys think that's true? Amen.

Amen. If you.

Think that's true? Dude, you're going to go with

temp. We're lowering it.

We're going 10%. Can I can I hear 5 Go here 5.

Percent, we're going 10. Percent, I'll go 10%.

All right, so 90% of the work is done by 10% of the people.

We can even be presumptuous in ministry, taking on roles or

responsibilities because we think we can handle them without

truly asking if God has called us to them.

If you don't like children, don't go downstairs, right?

Even if they ask you. It's not going to work out very

well. You're going to be on your knees

the rest of the day repenting from all the things that you

thought or said or did right. Let's just not do.

It the result. Of presumptuousness is always

the same two things that must be the theme today, failure and

frustration. Those are the 2.

Outcomes of presumptuousness, failure, and frustration.

And if we lend ourselves to think about that just for a

moment, the the last time that we were presumptuous, probably 5

minutes ago, the last time we were presumptuous, did it end in

this failure? And frustration, usually, almost

always failure and. Frustration.

Like the Israelites, when we move forward without this

guidance, we are essentially saying I know better than God.

Sometimes we even actually say that.

Heaven help us. Right.

Sometimes we even actually say that out loud or in our minds.

I know better than what God has in this.

Instance Heaven help us. The Israelites presume they

could still achieve victory. Even though they had forfeited

God's favor. Psalm 1913.

We're almost done. Can you guys listen for like 3

more minutes? We're almost done.

They might. It's a pastor's 3 minutes, by

the way. Just just so you know.

That's not an actual 3 minutes. All right, Psalm 1913, keep back

your servant also from presumptuous sins.

Let them not have dominion over me.

Then I shall be blameless and innocent of great transgression.

The psalmist understood. The subtlety of

presumptuousness. It is very subtle.

It creeps up into our lives. Most of us don't set out to be

presumptuous. Most of us want to wait on the

Lord. Most of us desire to hear from

the Lord and do what the Lord called us to do.

But the psalmist here tells us that it is subtle.

It can take dominion over our lives if we're not careful to

remain humble and dependent upon God.

As we close, that's a pastor's closing, by the way.

We still got some time as we close.

Let's look at Chapter 2 very briefly.

Yes, it's true. Disobedience is rooted in

unbelief and disobedience. Always has a cost.

We know that to be true. From our own lives.

We know that. We know that from Scripture.

We've read that this morning. Listen to me, but God doesn't

leave us there. There's good news this morning

for you and for me there is Chapter 2.

Isaiah 2 · chapter mention

And Deuteronomy, there's good news chapter 2 and Deuteronomy,

we look at verse 16 together. So as soon as all the men of war

had perished and were dead. From among the people.

The Lord. Said to me as.

Soon as all the men of. War had perished.

God gets busy just like he promised.

He goes on and he says this. The Lord said to me today you

are to cross the border of Moab at our today you are to cross

the border. This very day.

And then? Chapter 2, verse 36 he says this

from Aurora, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon,

and from that city that is in the valley as far as Gilead.

There was not a city too high for us.

The Lord our God gave all into our hands.

Yes, we fail. Yes, we falter.

Yes, we fall short of the glory of God.

But there is redemption in Jesus Christ.

There is redemption in the power of Jesus Christ, and yet we call

upon Him and we confess our sins to Him first.

John 19. If we confess our sins, He is

faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from

all unrighteousness. Father, I failed you in that.

Be specific, not for His need, but for our need, right?

Be specific on how we fell short and we confess our sins before

the Lord and we know by Scripture we know from our

lives. He is quick to forgive us, to

separate that as far as the East is from the West to never bring

it up again, right? Not like our forgiveness, not

like our forgiveness that we we forgive, but yet we keep it in

the back of our minds to bring out for such a time as this,

right? Anybody ever done that for such

a time as this? We're going to.

Play that that card. That's not our God.

That's not our God. He doesn't bring that back up

and say I can't trust you anymore.

Do you remember the things that you did?

And he begins to write them out for you.

And it takes a long time to write all those out, all the

things that we did against his will.

Hey, that's not our God. They are as far away as the

East. Is from the West.

Ephesians chapter one, verse 7 and 8.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the

forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of His

grace which He lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight.

That is the God that you and I serve.

There is light at the end of the tunnel.

There is redemption. In.

Jesus Christ, for those who repent, for those who call.

Upon the name of the Lord. You see, there are.

Some here. This morning that are believers

and and who need to repent of the things that we have been

presumptuous on that there are those who who are believers that

we need to we need to repent of where we have gone outside the

will of God and we need to fix that immediately today, right

now and there are those who don't know Jesus Christ.

As their Lord and Savior. You see, today could be the day

that he changes your life forever.

You see, because his blood is sufficient for you, His blood is

sufficient for you. The word tells us that Romans

10/13 everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved

and as we as we as believers, we as believers and we live in this

difficult world. I'm closing with this.

I promise a real. Closing this time.

I'm really closing. I close with this right today we

are on the threshold of our promised land, the new heaven

and the new earth. Our Lord is returning for his

people. Our Lord is returning for His

people, for you and for me, and for no other reason that should

put a smile upon our face. Let's say yes I missed it, I

missed it, but that does not keep me from the glory of God.

Revelation 21 one through 5. Then I saw a new heaven and a

new earth for the 1st heaven and the first earth that passed away

and the sea. Was no more, and I saw the holy

city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared

as a bride adorned for her husband.

How many of you guys were here for the wedding yesterday?

Beautiful ceremony. Great job guys.

Beautiful ceremony, loved it. Maybe think of this passage.

That's why it's here. And I heard a loud voice from

the throne saying, Behold, the dwelling place of God is with

man. He will dwell with them, and

they will be his people, and God himself will be with him as

their God. He will wipe away every tear

from their eyes. Death shall be no more.

Neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore for

the former things that passed away.

That is the God that you and I serve.

There is redemption in the blood of Jesus Christ.

Call upon the name of Jesus Christ today.

May He save you, confess your sins before the Lord.

May today be a new day for you. In Jesus Christ and he closes

with this and he who was seated on the throne said, behold, I am

making all things new. Also he said, write this down

for these words are trust, trustworthy and true.

We can believe the word of God. Let's pray together this

morning. Father, we are grateful,

grateful so much for your word. This morning, grateful.

That we were able to come into this place on this Lord's Day to
