  1. before time had a name. There was a garden, a

  2. place where heaven and earth walked as one. This

  3. is the Echoes of Eden, where we rediscover ancient

  4. roots and awaken to our eternal purpose. podcast

  5. by my father -in -law, and our wife's in the

  6. room too, and our little one. So if there's background

  7. noise, that would be why. But this podcast is

  8. going to be on teaching integrity. So it'll be

  9. primarily on integrity. And I want to open with

  10. the scripture first, and then I'll kind of explain

  11. why I wanted Not to give him a big head or nothing,

  12. but my father -in -law on the podcast for this

  13. one but scripture to go with this Would be you

  14. can find it in Titus 2 7 and 8 and it says above

  15. all set yourself apart as a model of A life nobler

  16. lived with dignity demonstrate integrity and

  17. all that you teach Bring a clear wholesome message

  18. that cannot be condemned and then your critics

  19. will be embarrassed with nothing bad to say about

  20. us So when I come up with this title of integrity,

  21. again, not to give anybody a big head, but this

  22. is something me and Amanda's talked about before.

  23. We've actually had this conversation a few times

  24. that you two have been probably the most Christ

  25. -like people that we have been around. And I

  26. don't tell people that or don't have these conversations

  27. that often, but that's just true. We've talked

  28. about this several times. And one reason we say

  29. that is just with I Don't think I've ever heard

  30. you guys talk a bad word about anybody At any

  31. time even though there's been opportunities at

  32. times I've never we've never heard that and so

  33. when I thought integrity Randy's the first person

  34. that came to mind as far as Men that I've been

  35. around And so that's kind of why I wanted to

  36. do the podcast with you on this one to set the

  37. whole stage up again not to give you a big head

  38. and That's not going to work in this room but

  39. I Have the mic so I can say what I want to Granted

  40. he has a mic too. He's just being quiet And this

  41. one, he's done warned me that, you know, he may

  42. not say anything, but I'm hoping we can get him

  43. to open up a little bit. But so I'll just start

  44. with a question and we'll just roll from that.

  45. In your personal opinion, when you hear the word

  46. integrity, what do you think of? To me, integrity

  47. would be where you're, you try to do what's right.

  48. Be it good for you, bad for you, but you try

  49. to do what's right. And as far as me personally,

  50. where it came from, it'd be my family, up to

  51. a point. Because they always had me in church.

  52. The doors were open when we were there. And my

  53. grandfather was very old school, but he always

  54. maintained that nobody is better than you are,

  55. but you're no better than anybody else. And he

  56. always said that to me or either one of my brothers.

  57. And, you know, my dad, I never really heard him

  58. say anything bad about anybody. He was just like,

  59. this is what we're going to do, and it's because

  60. it's a good thing to do. To me, it's trying to

  61. do right, is what it is. I guess in today's world,

  62. it's hard to find people who don't talk about...

  63. I guess, where we've grown up, it's a lot of

  64. gossip and pointing out everybody else's flaws.

  65. It's difficult to find people who don't do that.

  66. Well, you don't live here, so I have to be honest

  67. with you. You know, I'm not, I don't do that

  68. a lot, but there have been occasions when I have.

  69. But it's because it was like, they didn't do.

  70. what was the right thing to do. And a lot of

  71. times that brings that out in me. I can't stand

  72. inconsiderate people. And most people try to

  73. be, but it seems to me like there are so many

  74. people, whether you're driving, whether you're

  75. walking through Walmart, whatever you're doing,

  76. it's like people have no consideration for anybody

  77. else except them. They're the only person in

  78. the world. And that rubs me so wrong, and you

  79. can ask Gale about that. That just really tears

  80. me up. So it does happen. I'm human. I've been

  81. around a long time. It happens. But it is what

  82. it is. Well, you said something a while ago in

  83. that I have a quote written down here about Integrity

  84. is not perfection. It's alignment when who I

  85. am privately matches who I am publicly and You

  86. opened up a while ago by saying it's doing the

  87. right thing good whether that's good or bad for

  88. you Yeah, and I think it's easy to have integrity

  89. When it's good for you But when it can affect

  90. you negatively You know, it's tough. That's a

  91. tougher it is tough. I mean I Don't know how

  92. to explain it's just it's hard to do you know

  93. in I'm not anywhere near perfect. So, you know,

  94. but still It's it's a very hard thing. It becomes

  95. a lot harder being But One thing I said well

  96. ago is I said, you know, my parents, you know,

  97. my family, up to a point. And that point came

  98. with Gail. She's as good as they get. And she's

  99. always telling me that, you know, Will, this,

  100. you know, they can't help it. They were thinking

  101. of something. You know, she's always kind of.

  102. pulling me back where I need to be. And to be

  103. totally honest with you, she probably saved me

  104. from a life of junk and just made it, I mean,

  105. turned it around in a heartbeat. Just like that.

  106. Yep. Well, you mentioned you learned a lot of

  107. this from your dad and stuff like that. Can you

  108. remember like your first moment of learning kind

  109. of what integrity was or? Was that a I guess

  110. was that a word that was used or just something

  111. that was just kind of instilled It was not a

  112. word that was used. It was an action Mm -hmm,

  113. and you just kind of you know, like we all do

  114. I guess start to mimic things, you know Influences

  115. that come from family members or wherever and

  116. it's just things that happened That you just

  117. you don't remember them You know, nobody sat

  118. me down and said, do this, this, this. It's just,

  119. this is what he did. And, you know, like I said,

  120. it just, I mean, back then it was little things.

  121. You know, we worked in tobacco and we'd work

  122. early in the morning and maybe we'd get done

  123. early one day. So. My grandfather says, okay,

  124. we're going to go over to someone so we can help

  125. them. I'm like, why? Because that's what we do.

  126. You know, we said, you know, if we can help them,

  127. we'll go help them. And then time may come that

  128. they come down and help us if we need help. So

  129. it's just, that's the way you do it. And you

  130. can refer into a Bible verse, I'd refer to, you

  131. know, Want to say it's John where it's like when

  132. you first hear about Do unto others as you have

  133. them yeah and Gail's heard me quote that before

  134. saying you know that that's that's what you Ought

  135. strive for that's what I try for is make sure

  136. that what I do I wouldn't mind having it done

  137. How do you and I know there's generational differences

  138. but I look at the World that we have today and

  139. it seems like this is kind of like a lost concept

  140. in Some like in the younger What's your perception

  141. or your perspective how do you get it back and

  142. maybe you see I still think there's more good

  143. people out there than there is bad people. And

  144. if there is, then there's more people with integrity,

  145. or at least trying to have integrity, than there

  146. are those that aren't. News is news. Being nice

  147. does not news. Most definitely. It always has,

  148. except when I was growing up, there wasn't but...

  149. Three channels and you can't get but two of them

  150. and you know, it was and You know, it's just

  151. you weren't really watching TV like you do today

  152. Too many other things to do I guess because older

  153. I get the more I want to learn yeah, and and

  154. I don't guess I don't guess most people feel

  155. that way but the older I get the more I want

  156. to learn and It's, I mean, it's right there.

  157. I'm not on the phone as much probably as I used

  158. to be, but I still get on there quite a bit.

  159. But it's YouTube or it's Pinterest or certain

  160. subjects I want to see about. Maybe I want to

  161. learn how. Chains are built on a lawnmower that

  162. I have no clue how to do, but then I can watch

  163. it and I know how to do it so There's good and

  164. bad and about anything If they'd never invented

  165. TV, we'd probably be a lot better off but anything

  166. now is instantaneous. Yeah and And you're aware

  167. of things that when I was growing up you were

  168. not aware of whatsoever. None So it's good and

  169. bad in any of it, I guess. That's true. That's

  170. very true. So when I think of integrity, one

  171. of the things I think of is about, especially

  172. as men, is like keeping your word. When you say

  173. you're going to do something, I forget to, I've

  174. heard say this, maybe it's, I don't know, about

  175. letting your yes be a yes, let your no be a no

  176. kind of idea. say you're going to do something,

  177. then don't follow through it. Do you think that's

  178. still a big deal today as far as keeping your

  179. word to it? And do you think that applies to

  180. or ties in with integrity? Well, I think it does

  181. in with integrity, but people have good intentions.

  182. I have good intentions. I don't always follow

  183. through on them. I have good intentions. It's

  184. with like you or Amanda, if I tell you I'll do

  185. something, you let me know when and I will be

  186. there. And I guess it's that way at church nowadays

  187. too, wouldn't you think so? Usually at church

  188. right now, nowadays, if I think that something

  189. that needs to be done, I don't usually call anybody.

  190. I have a bad habit of saying, I'll take care

  191. of it. And I usually do. But back to your question,

  192. it has to do with integrity. It's part of it.

  193. But there are a lot of people with good intentions,

  194. but they have very little time anymore. Know

  195. that feeling I mean really I mean You know people

  196. your age. I don't see how they make it. I Really

  197. don't because I mean there's so much stuff to

  198. do in so little time. Mm -hmm It's in Gail. We're

  199. probably attest to this. We're both retired.

  200. We're like how in the world did we ever work?

  201. Because we stay busy 24 7 and we don't have jobs

  202. don't have jobs It's all the time something in

  203. again. Yes, I mean it just is It's kind of like

  204. what we were talking about Earlier we don't have

  205. anything on our calendar next week the next thing

  206. we know our calendar school. Mm -hmm We didn't

  207. have any plans didn't have any plans Yes make

  208. grumble all the time, but we still take care

  209. of it. Okay, so I'm just curious, I'm playing

  210. the other side for a minute, if you was to flip

  211. that and let's say, because we know you two are

  212. heavily involved in your church, if you was to

  213. be the one to say, yes, we'll take care of it,

  214. but never follow through with it, what kind of

  215. response do you think you would get from people?

  216. in that regard. Because I know there's people

  217. out there that do that. Well, as you said, starting

  218. this off, I don't have a big head, but a lot

  219. of stuff we do people don't know about. They

  220. don't know we do it, do they? They have no clue.

  221. They just know it got done. They don't know who

  222. did it. They don't have a clue. Yep. So I don't

  223. think I can answer that question. I didn't know

  224. I don't know what they don't know what would

  225. be said, but it just we haven't hit that ever

  226. so I don't I don't know what no no just curious

  227. This is gonna go back to earlier when you you're

  228. talking about in here Give you an example I was

  229. about 11 years old had a BB gun. I was always

  230. told don't shoot anything alive So one day I

  231. shot one of my grandma's guineas didn't kill

  232. it, but it broke its leg. So I thought, well,

  233. they were all there at the back of the barn working,

  234. and I was just up there. And I cried all the

  235. way to the back of the barn, because I had to

  236. tell grandma that I shot one of her guineas.

  237. I told her. And she said, basically, you know,

  238. you shouldn't have done that. I said, yep. I'm

  239. sorry, but I did it. She said, okay, so we'll

  240. have guinea pie for dinner tomorrow night. So

  241. she took the sting away and my grandpa always

  242. called me Abe. Abraham Lincoln according to him

  243. because I'd rather, I'd tell him the truth even

  244. if it got me a spanking. But, you know, if you're

  245. doing it right for what you want, you know, you're

  246. doing it because you want to do something right

  247. and you tell the truth about something, good

  248. or bad, if you're telling the truth, you usually

  249. come out on the better end. Yep. Oh, I'm not

  250. smart enough to do that. It gets complicated

  251. in a hurry. but it's it's interesting because

  252. especially with us having these three um i'm

  253. trying to not we see both sides of the industry

  254. and stuff when you have the kids to do something

  255. not everybody's gonna do that hey this is what

  256. i did um do you go and do you think of something

  257. that was instilled in you growing up as far as

  258. you always just I think it was one of those things

  259. where I learned the hard way. Did I be better

  260. off telling the truth? Yeah, because if I found

  261. out I didn't tell them the truth, then I'd really

  262. have problems. their reactions the girls more

  263. so than Aiden but there's time that they do something

  264. wrong they're afraid to come tell me about it

  265. because they're afraid of the response they're

  266. going to get because there was a previous time

  267. not too long ago that I feel like I would have

  268. flipped my wheel a little bit quicker. And so

  269. now I'm seeing their ability and Amanda helped,

  270. you know, just telling what you did and whatever.

  271. And when they get that, it's okay response. They're

  272. more apt to continue telling me, because that's

  273. what I want as they grow up. But especially as

  274. Kaylin, if she becomes a teenager, I want them

  275. to come to me when they have these issues and

  276. be kind of like the honest Abe mentality of,

  277. yeah, I did this and it might hurt on the other

  278. end, but that's what you want. So it's like,

  279. how do you, how do you instill that into your

  280. kids to not make them run? Cause I feel like

  281. me growing up, I had the more of the idea of

  282. I'm going to go run and hide instead of can tell

  283. you what I did. Because I didn't know what the

  284. response was going to be. If that makes any sense.

  285. Yeah. Well, you got to start early as far as

  286. kids. And I've heard Gail on several occasions

  287. explaining that if you don't tell me the truth,

  288. I can't fix what's wrong. Yes. And if you don't

  289. tell me the truth, then I don't know when to

  290. believe you. ever. Yeah. That if, you know, something

  291. could be very, very wrong, but do I believe you?

  292. Or are you telling me another lie? You know,

  293. and, and Gail makes that plain. She makes it

  294. plain and simple that we don't, we don't do that.

  295. Yeah. Because it's, you, nobody can help you

  296. if they can't believe you. So. That's a good

  297. point. Very good point. When have you felt your

  298. integrity tested the most? If you can think of

  299. a time. I'm sure it has a whole lot, but I don't,

  300. don't really know right off hand being quite

  301. frank. I don't, don't know for sure. So just

  302. to give you a heads up. So I'm trying to do this

  303. a couple of these episodes in about 30 minutes,

  304. keeping on 30 minutes. We've already been talking

  305. 23 minutes. So that actually It goes by really

  306. fast when you just start talking. We'll do a

  307. couple questions to start winding it down. And

  308. I think this is good for you as a dad and a rah

  309. -rah. How do you want your kids and grandkids

  310. to describe your character one day? I guess a

  311. follow -up would be how would you model that

  312. to make sure that's what they say about your

  313. character? Well probably on the way they'll ever

  314. be able to be the memories of so it'd be I Think

  315. they'd probably say that I help whenever I can

  316. Always trying to teach something. That's a tough

  317. question. You got any thoughts? Me? That wasn't

  318. very nice. Well, I think if I can demonstrate

  319. what was demonstrated to me, that would be the

  320. thing. That if I can explain in doing stuff with

  321. them that, you know, we don't do that, you know,

  322. and maybe if I have some sort of example why

  323. we don't, that'd be great, but usually all I

  324. do is we don't do stuff like that. Yeah. It's

  325. just, it's a teaching thing. So that would, oh

  326. lordy. You must have stayed up late trying to

  327. answer that question. I would hope they would

  328. think back when they get grown that yeah, he

  329. was a good guy. And that's, and I guess that's

  330. what I've always said that I'm not special, but

  331. I'm okay. And so if they can say that I was an

  332. okay guy, I'd be good. Um. Integrity or good

  333. example of that. Well, how would you? You didn't

  334. have an example for. If they were looking for.

  335. Which I'm assuming someone had to be looking

  336. for. what integrity was to figure out that they

  337. needed something they don't have. Then it's find

  338. the place where it's comfortable. Find a person

  339. you're comfortable with and just stick like glue

  340. and it'll come out. You'll be able to tell. Because

  341. I kind of always look at things, you know, with

  342. people. Because I've been around all kinds of

  343. people, all types, good, bad, indifferent. But

  344. I kind of look at it like, okay, they're trying.

  345. And if God can forgive them, I don't have a problem

  346. forgiving them. So let's just take it from there

  347. and go. That's big. That's what you need to,

  348. that's what I would think somebody would need

  349. to do is find a place where they're comfortable

  350. and then, and the person that they've watched

  351. for a while to make sure that's what they're

  352. wanting. And then it's just like taking on a

  353. mentor. Just go ahead and go. And learn from

  354. that person and learn from that person and then

  355. to The Bible is good As long as you don't try

  356. to interpret everything You know read it for

  357. what it is But don't try to interpret step because

  358. whenever people try to interpret the Bible they're

  359. always doing it from their viewpoint. You can't

  360. do it that way because my viewpoint and your

  361. viewpoint are totally different. Totally different.

  362. Because that comes from your experiences in life

  363. and you can't do it. I don't say anybody can

  364. do it and interpret it without having their their

  365. environment and whatever else Yeah, that's right

  366. and and I think it's interesting to Some of the

  367. people I listen to and it's so true as far as

  368. church world goes in the Bible it's like Our

  369. culture has made the Bible a part of the Trinity

  370. And that's not where it was supposed to be It's

  371. not part of the Father Son Spirit it's It's good

  372. and you know, I love the Bible but I've seen

  373. the flip side of what kind of what you just said

  374. I've seen the flip side of the the church world

  375. where we can just take the scripture and beat

  376. people up with it and take the scripture and

  377. Again give your own bias to it and everything

  378. else and hurt people more than help people and

  379. that's yeah, that's just It's not a weapon to

  380. be used like that No, it's not. Probably if you

  381. looked at every holy book there has been written,

  382. okay, the Bible, the Koran, I can't remember

  383. some of the others, but you see what I'm saying

  384. is not books that man sit down and just wrote

  385. for somebody to read. And I'm talking about a

  386. religious book that's the center of a different

  387. religion most all of them probably um center

  388. on love and you know that's that's it you like

  389. i said do unto others as you'd have to do and

  390. love that neighbor and i think your integrity

  391. is pretty well intact Good point I'll ask question.

  392. I'll see how long you should do on this one I

  393. think you can stay true to yourself up to a point.

  394. Okay. When you get married, two become one. One,

  395. yeah. And so that self kind of gets a backseat

  396. because then it's sales. And they can be merged

  397. and work out fantastic. or somebody can try to

  398. hold on to theirs. And it goes like crazy. Staying

  399. true to yourself is if you've got a good concept

  400. of what, how you want life to be. And if you're

  401. single, then you can reach for that. But once

  402. you get married, then it's got to be a goal of

  403. both. And it's got to be, it can't be, it can't

  404. be like your wife going to you and saying, okay,

  405. what are we gonna do with this, this, this, this,

  406. this, okay? And it can't be the husband going

  407. to the wife saying, what are we gonna do with

  408. this, this, this, this, you know? And it goes

  409. more ways than one. It's got to kind of be a

  410. team in there. But to stay true to yourself.

  411. is know what your values are. Check those values

  412. against your religion, beliefs in God, and that

  413. type of thing. And if everything kind of gels,

  414. then you can stay that course. Because you won't

  415. be interested in anything that'll take you off

  416. that course. If you don't have some sort of course,

  417. then you're liable to say, well, Let's see what

  418. this does. Let's see what this one over here

  419. does. Hey, there's a new one I haven't tried.

  420. Let me try that. But if you've got your course

  421. and you know, like I said before, it jives with

  422. the path you're on and the religion that you're

  423. in. If all that is there, you won't be interested

  424. in it. Anything else? You'll know what you're

  425. about? Yep. That's good. I like that. That was

  426. a good answer. You know, you're stretching me

  427. a whole lot. I like this. See, it wasn't even

  428. that bad. This is the end of the show right here.

  429. This is the complete end. It wasn't even that

  430. bad. You didn't answer them. Well, you answered

  431. them with really good, again, not to build up

  432. anything, but you answered them with really a

  433. lot of wisdom. Again, I don't I don't see myself

  434. as having a lot of wisdom. Yeah You may not but

  435. we do and I say this I think I can speak for

  436. both Amanda and I and speak to both of you that

  437. and I'm not the one to say how I feel a lot of

  438. times but It's it's it's a true statement for

  439. me. Y 'all are two of the most Christlike people

  440. that I've ever encountered And it's that that's

  441. just from someone who's grown up in church, you

  442. know, given a different definition for me in

  443. my life. So it's a good one. That's that's why

  444. when I need to come up with integrity, I was

  445. like, you're a perfect person for that. So talk

  446. about that a little bit. So I appreciate you

  447. doing it very much so. You're welcome. Makes

  448. you think. It does.
