Jesus’ Vision of the Kingdom — Mustard Seed, Leaven, Salt & Light

Let's jump in to today's episode. All right,

we are back to our conversation on rethinking.

the end times. This is something we began last

week. We're going to continue it on this week

and for the foreseeable future. If you're looking

for a different lens of how to see the end times

and I would say a more hope -filled lens, continue

listening. This has been fun for me. I'm jumping

in kind of studying some of this. I have learned

there is a lot of information, a lot of different

rabbit holes that you can go down and for someone

like me that can be very dangerous. Because if

you listen to my podcast you know that I can

sometimes get on rabbit holes. But that is what

it is. I would encourage anyone to pray for,

pray that the Holy Spirit would adjust your lens.

and allow you to see scripture and read scripture

through Christ. That has been the biggest thing

that has helped me with a lot of different things.

Some would call it a deconstruction journey.

I look at it more as, I look at it more of a

reconstruction journey, because I'm not just

tearing down to tear down. I'm allowing Holy

Spirit into the conversation. and allowing her

to adjust the lens that I view things through.

When you do that, that changes a lot of things

and that's just my opinion. There's so much if

we would allow Holy Spirit to begin to teach

us. Kind of like how I tell teenagers, you have

to sit down with a word, which this is definitely

a word. you have to sit down with a word with

the word. And the word has a name and his name

is Yeshua. In the beginning was the word and

the word was with God and the word became flesh

and dwelt among us and all that. So the word

has a name. I know I can offend people when I

say this, but our Bible is not the word of God.

It's definitely a word. It's one of the greatest

books that if not the greatest book that we have

I've looked at it as a love letter as an invitation

to know him deeper But it's not the Word of God

the Word of God has a name and his name is Yeshua

I think that's important even if you consider

back to when the writers wrote this they didn't

have scripture they were writing inspired by

the Holy Spirit and quite frankly you can see

my Bookshelf behind me have a lot of different

books. I think the Holy Spirit still inspires

people to write today I've wrote two devotionals

now. I'm writing on it working on an actual book

this time I've got another devotional that I'm

actually I'm trying to expand my 30 -day devotional

to a 90 -day. That would be one of my next steps

And all of this that I feel has been inspired

by the Holy Spirit to do and I don't just write

to write In in those moments that I'm working

on this these items I invite Holy Spirit into

the room And into what I'm writing so I can have

Holy Spirit in Trinity's perspective Do I get

it right all the time? No, none of us are going

to get it right all the time There's always going

to be things that we see through our lens or

how we were raised and this, that, and the other.

And that's just part of it. It is what it is.

Does that mean that we're bad people? No. I mean,

I don't know why I'm going down this rabbit.

See, already four minutes in and I'm on a rabbit

hole. So here we are. Anyhow, enough of all that.

I'm just saying that I believe personally the

Holy Spirit still inspires people to write today.

Even with this stuff right here, the notes that

I use, I use a lot of AI to help and then I go

and do my own studying and deep diving and pulling

out things of Scripture, looking at early Church

Father quotes. There's actually a website that

I found that you can look at a verse and see

what an early Church Father has said about that

verse to see if it's beneficial or not for what

you're working on. So it is what it is. I'm not

one of those who just takes AI and runs with

it. I think AI is a tool, just like Google or

internet or cell phones, technology, whatever.

I think all of that is a tool, but not to be

replaced. with Holy Spirit and with us doing

what we need to do as far as inviting Holy Spirit

into the conversation, into our prayer and our

study time, because ultimately the Holy Spirit

is still the greatest teacher of it all. That's

something that was told to me a long time ago

by evangelist, bishop. Pastor Lance Johnson was

at a church and he looked at me when I was at

the altar and he said Son, he said that the Holy

Spirit will be the greatest teacher that you'll

ever need. I did not know the journey that I

was about to go on after those words but here

we are and this is this is where we are so let

me get my notes pulled up. I'm probably going

to start today where we ended off last week but

give me just a minute let me pull this up. So

we ended last week talking about the mustard

seed and what does that have to do with the end

times? Well if you look at the end times I think

it's important that we get an understanding of

What Jesus was saying what he was doing what

the people then would have taken this information

as And so Jesus was explaining The concept the

idea of what the kingdom was like and so he uses

the metaphor we ended with this last week But

I'll just hit on this briefly Jesus uses the

metaphor that the kingdom is like a mustard seed

and we read that in Matthew chapter 13 verses

Matthew 13:31–32

31 through 32. I'll pull that up here and read

that just so we have the context to start this

out. Matthew 13 verse 31 through 32 and again

Matthew 13:31–32

I'm reading out of the passion. Then Jesus taught

them another parable heaven's kingdom can be

compared to the tiny mustard seed that a man

takes and plants in his field Although the smallest

of all the seeds it eventually grows into the

greatest of garden plants becoming a tree for

birds to come and build their nest in its branches

so small beginning massive growth This It's important

to understand farmers would not have just planted

the mustard seed And the the reason for that

is it was considered an invasive crop I think

last week and I'll use the same example this

week if I was to do it where we are at I'm not

part of the world I alluded to something like

monkey grass. I don't know if you've ever planted

monkey grass, but if you ever start planting

it It will take over a section And that's some

of the hardest stuff to remove to be such a small

smaller plant. It is hard to remove at times

so this was the smallest thing that they commonly

used as a proverb and Jesus is using yet again.

He's using a common expression of that day to

help express what the kingdom was like. Okay,

so Again, we can't just read this and think of

it in our terms today. We have to understand,

and this is important when you're reading scripture

anytime, is to ask what would they have heard

that as? A perfect example of this, and I'm not

gonna go down this trail today, but I'm gonna

say it enough to make you maybe go read and do

some thinking on it or whatever. It's the concept

of hell. We have this idea and notion of what

hell is like because of what we have been taught.

But if you go back and look at the original language,

there were three different terms used for our

English definition of hell. None of them mean

eternal torment. So I'm going to leave that there.

I'll come back to that maybe later on. But that's

just another example of we have to think about

what they would have understood this as. and

not look at the stuff that Jesus is proclaiming

is going to happen, that he's talking about 2000

plus years away when Iran is in another conflict

with the United States. That's how we judge it

every time. Any time of 36 years, let's see,

let's say 25 years, enough to know what was going

on. Any time that there is something going on

in the Middle East, we look at it as it's got

to be close to the end. September 11th, 2001.

If you are old enough to know what that day means,

you probably, when I said the day, you probably

remember exactly where you were when that day

happened and when you found out the news of what

happened. Same thing happened. This is the end.

It's talking about, it's time for Christ to return

and all this, that and the other. And this is

my concern is that we look at the end of things

to be this, how can I put this? We look at the,

how dark it is to be an indication that the end

is near as if we're saying that Jesus lost that

somehow at the end of all this that darkness

gets a greater say than what the kingdom of life

gets and what the kingdom of light gets and here's

the problem is light wins every single time if

i was to cut i can't do it because there's an

app on my phone to do all this, but I've got

three lights on in here. If I was to turn them

all off, okay, and my screen go completely black,

the moment I hit a switch and to tell them to

come back on, darkness ceases to exist. And here's

the brilliant thing is that there's no argument

between light and darkness. The moment light

shows up, darkness ceases to exist. There is

no battle. There is no fight. The problem is

Jesus has called us more than conquerors. He

tells us in Colossians chapter 2 that he has

stripped the powers of the enemy away from him.

So he has no power. He has been effectively defeated

and yet we still believe that there's something

left undone. That this thing has to end in a

certain way. Has to end and us bullying each

other up and all this that and the other. to

say that, oh, it's time for me to get out of

here because to heaven with me and to hell with

everybody else. That's ultimately what I hear

when we begin to talk like this. And the problem

is, Jesus actually did, I just happen to believe

it, Jesus actually did what he came here to do.

So when he stretched on the cross and said, it

is finished, to Telestah, he meant it. He knew

what he was sent here to do. He completed it.

And now it's up to us. Go back to Romans 8. The

earth is groaning and travailing for the manifestation

of the sons and daughters of Yahweh. It's not

groaning and travailing for the manifestation

of the rapture. It's not groaning and travailing

for Christ to come back. No. creation is groaning

and travailing awaiting for you and I to come

to our senses to metanoia to step into who we

actually are inside of Christ and begin to proclaim

back to creation who she is. So All that because

we're talking about the mustard seed. Jesus is

explaining that the kingdom is like the mustard

seed that almost begins invisibly small. Again,

I told you this last week. Go Google an image

of the mustard seed. Look at how small he's referencing

that the kingdom is like this. And I think that's

just what they had a reference to back then.

I think Jesus today, because of science and technology,

that he could reference the kingdom as something

even smaller. Because the smaller you go, it

looks so insignificant. But if we don't understand

how significant those small things are. Okay,

think about the stuff in your body that your

human eye cannot see that we can see your blood

cells that we can see Atoms and molecules and

all this stuff under telescopes and if those

things cease to exist Where would we be I mean?

It's kind of it when you begin to think about

this and think about how small those Excuse me

how significant those small things are it begins

to really mess with you and it speaks volumes.

So the kingdom is like those small little things

that seem so insignificant, but give it some

time, give it life and let it begin to expand

beyond your wildest imaginations. And I'm seeing

this in our kingdom family ministries with the

teenagers that we have and the families that

we have that encounter the love of Abba, that

Papa encounters these young people when we have

our services and such. that they are encountered

by the love of papa it's and the thing is it

starts small it starts small but then it begins

to grow organically so again something that we

said last week is what the jews would have expected

the jews expected a political kingdom they expected

a military overthrow of rom a visible Revolution,

a mighty military force, that's kind of what

they were expecting. So when Jesus starts talking

about the kingdom being a seed, they're going

to have some questions and probably some issues

with this. Mustard basically considered a weed,

I think I mentioned that last week. But once

mustard grew, it spread everywhere, it took over

fields and it was hard to remove. So. When Jesus

made the statement in the scripture that we read

just a minute ago, that a man planted mustard

in his field, the listeners would have probably

thought, why would somebody plant that? That

stuff, it takes over stuff, it takes over my

field. Why would anybody intentionally plant

this? And that's the point, why? Because the

kingdom spreads uncontrollably. You cannot contain

the kingdom. The kingdom will get out one way

or another. Like the mustard seed, the kingdom

advances through transformation, through influence,

through multiplication, through life. It's never

by force. And I'm not going to go too far down

this rabbit hole, but I do want to make mention

because I think the things that we have in Scripture

is important and it takes us time and stuff to

actually dig in and allow the Holy Spirit to

speak to us and reveal those mysteries. That's

why I like I believe it's proverbs it talks about

that it's uh I have to go live but basically

it's it's He loves to hide things for them For

us to be able to search it out. It's essentially

I'd have to go read it word for word, but it's

it's a favorite one of mine That it's for kings

to go and search out the mysteries so he had

stuff intentionally So one of the things he says

in this verse is he says, it eventually grows

into the greatest of garden plants, becoming

a tree for birds to come and build their nest

in its branches. This is actually, again, Old

Testament language, and I did not know this until

studying this out some, that in the Hebrew scriptures,

great empires are described like trees where

birds or nations come to nest. So birds here,

would have been equal to the nations or the Gentiles.

So Jesus is hinting even with this statement

that the kingdom of God will become something

where all nations find refuge. And again, likely

would have been offensive to Jewish listeners

who expected the kingdom to exalt Israel over

the nations, not include them into this. But

Jesus is saying the kingdom grows into something

where everyone belongs and that's important to

understand. So the kingdom works from the inside

out. One more thing here as far as mustard, the

mustard seed cannot be controlled once planted.

So you think you control the king god's kingdom

through the temple system but the kingdom is

breaking out beyond your system and I believe

we're seeing that even today that the kingdom

is breaking out beyond systems. It'll spread

to fishermen, to tax collectors, to Samaritans.

This is offensive language in that day and time.

To fishermen, tax collectors, Samaritans, Gentiles,

and ultimately the entire world. And both Mustard

and Leaven share a key trait. They work invisibly

at first. You don't see the growth immediately,

but eventually the growth becomes undeniable.

And again, this reflects the nature of the kingdom.

It begins within people and then it spreads through

people. So and then we have Matthew 13 chapter

chapter 13 verse 33. It says then he taught them

another parable Heaven's kingdom can be compared

to yeast that a woman takes and blends into three

measures of flour and then waits until all the

dough rises And we'll read dr. Simmons footnote

here It says these two parables about the tiny

mustard seed and the yeast both teach of God's

kingdom having a small beginning but growing

unto its influence permeates and prevails into

all the earth. The three measures of flour was

nearly 22 kilos, enough to feed 300 people. What

once looked unimpressive rises to impact and

feed many. The number three always points to

resurrection life. So again, we have small influence

leading to the transformation of the whole. Mustard,

if you think about it, it's external spread.

Leaven is internal transformation. And we in

our Bible study did a study on the leaven because

Jesus warns us of the leaven of hair, the leaven.

excuse me if I could speak today, the leaven

of Herod, the leaven of Pharisees, and the leaven

of the Sadducees. All three of those are important.

I would encourage you to go and study what those

are and why he warned us to beware of them, to

be mindful of them, to be on guard against them.

I think it's important if you go and read that

and kind of study what are those, what do those

leavens represent and then understand when he

calls the kingdom like leaven. That's important

because it's internal transformation. Leaven

works by penetrating everything. Just a tiny

amount transforms the entire batch. This is talking

about making bread. Again, most Jews expected

the kingdom to come through political revolution.

They wanted military force. That's what they

wanted to do because they wanted to overthrow

Rome. That was their whole intention. I'm 20

minutes into this. There's no way that I'm going

to get all this out in this one. But it's okay.

We're going to keep tracking. I got plenty of

time. But Jesus says the kingdom, it comes through

influence, transformation, multiplication, and

life spreading. I've said that over before, but

I feel like that needs to be repeated, that that's

how the kingdom... comes. It comes through influence.

It comes through transformation. Transformation

of what? Transformation of us as individuals

as we allow the Holy Spirit within us to do the

transformative work that people around you begin

to take notice of the change within you. And

then what they begin to ask, what are you doing?

What is your secret? What's happening with you?

And then you can begin to explain to them with

the joy of the Lord that, hey, it's my God. It

is Holy Spirit within me. Let me introduce you

to Papa. Let me introduce you to the love of

my dad. That's where the conversation begins

to happen organically. Because here's the thing.

I believe the generation that we have today is

looking for the authentic thing. They're looking

for the real deal. So basically, the kingdom

is organic. It is not imperial. Jesus didn't

build an army. He didn't build a government.

He didn't build a political movement. He's not

a Republican, a Democrat, a Libertarian, an Independent.

He's none of that. Jesus focused on people, why?

Because people are the kingdom carriers. The

seed multiplies through people. That's what begins

to happen. Even what I'm watching happen with

our group here, where we are at. And I may have

told this story last week, I don't know, but

it bears repeating because it spoke volume to

me. One of the last couple services we had, we

had a young 18 year old girl there. And when

we started out the service and stuff, she did

not want to be around the group. She wanted,

she was with one of her friends. They kind of

stayed out to the side. They didn't want, did

not want to be around people. And when we began

to pray, I felt I was just obedient with the

Holy Spirit and set up a... I guess an environment

you would say to where she could encounter the

love of Papa and understand that there was people

around her. And by the end of that service, she

was laughing, she was dancing with the group.

It was like a total transformation in this young

girl that I saw from beginning to end. By the

next week, she was in our Bible study. And then

I was told, I think it was the week after that,

that she had a friend that she wanted to bring

to our gathering or service, whatever you want

to call it. But see, that's what I'm talking

about. It grows organically. We don't have this

massive group of hundreds of people, but something's

beginning to happen to where these young people

are encountering something authentic that they

want to bring somebody else into this environment.

So I'm not here to boast about me or to boast

about the family that's hosting this. We're all

just creating space for... Papa to have his way

and to minister to the people that show up. That's

all we are doing It's like this podcast. I mean

man Let me just pull it up just so because I

was floored And I don't I don't know what I'm

doing this is this stuff is completely new to

me, I don't understand it all It's not nowhere

probably professional My youtube has not got

hardly any hits. I'm just kind of doing what

I'm doing as I am as I go but I put up our podcast

this past week and just looked at the analytics

I do that occasionally and I was floored to see

the many different nations it was reaching like

United States of course Vietnam Uzbekistan Ecuador

Mexico Bangladesh India Algeria Venezuela Colombia

Iraq Argentina Turkey uh kenya and egypt vietnam

is sitting at 21 of my downloads i'm not sure

who's listening in vietnam i honor you i bless

But this is the kind of stuff I'm talking about,

is it starts so small. I was getting one or two

downloads here and there along the way and just

in the past 30 days I am getting I would say

anywhere between seven to ten downloads per day

and you know that doesn't sound like a big number

but it's organic growth and I don't know what

the I'm not I'm not doing anything different

I'm not spending money advertising all this I'm

just a normal guy. I'm a dad. I'm a husband.

I've got three beautiful children I'm just doing

what I feel like the Holy Spirit is is asking

of me Leading me into that kind of thing. So

that's the whole point of what the kingdom looks

like it looks organic It looks small. It looks

like somebody who maybe doesn't know what the

crap that he's doing But he's just on for the

journey. He's on for the ride so Again, people

are the kingdom carriers and the seed multiplies

through them. So everything that Jesus is talking

about here is expansion metaphors. The kingdom

is going to expand. Trust and believe. Then we

have, let's talk about salt and light. I want

to look at Matthew chapter five, verses 13 through

16. But if you withhold forgiveness from others

your father withholds forgiveness from you Why

do I not all that's cuz that's Matthew chapter

Matthew 6 · chapter mention

6 that has nothing to do with what I'm reading

Excuse me Matthew chapter 5 verses 13 through

Matthew 5:13–16

16 Says your lives are like salt among the people

but if you like salt become bland, how can your

saltiness be restored? Flavorless salt is good

for nothing. I'll be thrown out and trampled

on by others your lives light up the world for

how Can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop

and who would light a lamp and then hide it in

an obscure place? Instead it's placed where everyone

in the house can benefit from its light. So don't

hide your light. Let it shine brightly before

others so that your commendable works will shine

as light upon life. And then they will give their

praise to your Father who is in heaven. Salt

preserves Light exposes darkness, neither works

if removed from the environment. Hear what I

just said. So the problem with this whole Rapture

idea is that salt ceases to be salt and light

ceases to be light if it's removed from the environment.

Makes sense? To me it does. Does it make sense

to you? Do you see the problem here? If we are

pulled out of this world, where's the salt and

where's the light? That just doesn't make sense.

That does not track with what we see in the person

of Jesus who is very restorative by nature. And

I believe that's what we are called to do as

sons and daughters is to restore, to partner

with Holy Spirit and see restoration and reconciliation.

You see, the first Christians believed that Jesus

already reigns. This is the early church mindset.

Their job was to announce that reign. Their message

was Jesus is Lord, which would directly challenge

Rome's claim of Caesar is Lord. So here's the

thing. The gospel does not call believers to

escape the world, but to transform it through

Christ's life within them. That's important.

We are called to transform the world around us

by the Christ within us. See that's why I think

it's important that the Holy Spirit had me do

the revelation of Christ and all before this.

Because we first have to understand one, that

Christ is within inside of us and two, that Christ

is within every individual that you and I encounter.

And when you begin to allow Holy Spirit to allow

you to see through their lens, the Trinity's

lens, the Father's lens, it begins to change

your heart toward people. It really does. Just

something to think about. Just something to think

about. So again, If the kingdom is like leaven,

the kingdom is like the mustard seed, it may

look small, but I think that's why Jesus, and

I forget where it's at, but I think that's why

the scripture encourages us to not despise the

day of small beginnings. To remain faithful in

the little things. To remain faithful in the

small things. Not as a Let me be faithful with

this so I can get more But understanding that

the more you take care of the small things that

seem Not to matter the more those small things

become two bigger things think about children

When you first they first into your life, they're

so small and They're so small they're helpless

you have to do everything for them But the more

you begin to be faithful in the small things

The more that child begins to grow and to grow

and to become more independent to more to become

Less dependent on you to do stuff for them and

they are capable of doing things themselves Why

because you were faithful in the small things?

You were faithful in the beginning to help nurture

that child to help care for that child to help

love that child It's the little things that matter

it's the little moments in life that matter This

is not about even in marriage. It's not about

the you know, you think about Valentine's Day

It's not about that one day and doing this old

great big thing I love you and then the rest

of the year you just don't do nothing That's

that's that will not help your marriage. I promise

you To me our Kind of our marriage is we just

Valentine's another day. Like I try to love my

wife every day that I can Am I perfect I Would

like to think something no, I'm not no Am I perfect

dad no, I get that wrong too much we just had

a conversation of that yesterday There's days

and I'm working on an e -course for men for fathers,

but there's still some some days that I just

feel like I blew it But I'm reminded that it's

the small things that we have to do My wife has

to be that voice to me. Sometimes it's the small

thing. So the kingdom is the small things that

we do It's loving the unlovable It's it's releasing

hope to the hopeless It's praying for the sick

and seeing them recover It's being an ear to

those who need an ear. Being a voice of heaven

in situations that needs heaven to intervene.

Do you see how big of a deal that you are because

Christ lives within you? And then you have the

opportunity to partner with the Holy Spirit?

To release the kingdom of heaven through you

into the world around you? Do you see how big

of a deal that is? That's massive when you think

about it. That's so important when you think

about it. It's like leaven. You can't see leaven,

but yet it causes the entire loaf to rise. Why?

Because the kingdom works like leaven. It's the

internal transformation that you can't see anything

happen. I remember on my own personal journey

with the past few years that when... When I really

begin to allow Holy Spirit to take me on this

journey and I begin to submit to her Lordship

And I begin to allow Holy Spirit to do the transformation

that was needed It was my my wife and my kids

who began to see the difference in me long before

I did They were seeing the living the loaf rise

before I did remember having a playdate with

my daughter We try to do a daddy -daughter day

each month and that that particular night We

stayed home and I said you got an hour with daddy

in your room. We'll play whatever you want to

play No, excuse me This was a different day.

This was this was on a Saturday I believe when

I was off of work and I was sitting in her room

We was joking doing something and she said daddy.

Why are you in a good mood? Now as a dad that

kind of broke me a little bit but then I looked

at the bright side that my daughter was paying

attention and took notice that something about

daddy was changing something something something

was happening inside of her daddy that's my friend

that's what the kingdom is like and so if you

want to rethink the end times If we're called

to be that light, if creation is waiting on you

and I, if we're called to be like salt, then

if we get removed in a rapture situation because

everything's going to hell, quote unquote, then

what happens to the world around us? Where's

the hope then? Where's the light supposed to

come from then? It goes back to what I like to

repeat from Damon Thompson. Don't check your

brain at the door. If we get removed and raptured

out because everything's just going chaotic,

which again to me says an indication that Christ

did not complete what he completed. If we get

removed, where's the hope for those that's left

here? that situation or is the truth that we're

called to stay the truth that we're called to

occupy until he comes like we talked about believe

last week occupy until he comes believe we I

believe we addressed that maybe we didn't yeah

we did I got it in my notes meaning to engage

in business, to trade, to conduct affairs. We're

called and put here to occupy the kingdom, to

occupy earth and to release the kingdom of God

through us, to partner with the Holy Spirit,

to release His love, to release His grace and

His mercy to those around us and to see transformation

not happening with force. But a see transformation

transformation happened little by little by little

by little That's that's so much better news Anyhow

Think we'll stop there for today and next week

we will jump into Part two of this which is how

biblical prophecy actually works That's what

we'll start diving into looking at some the some

of the symbolic imagery and stuff of that nature.
