  1. Welcome to the Kingdom Family Podcast, where

  2. we rediscover our identity as sons and daughters

  3. of Yahweh and learn to live the life of the kingdom.

  4. Let's jump in to today's episode. OK, guys, we

  5. are back season four and we are going to kick

  6. this season off with rethinking hell. Yes, I

  7. am going to wrestle that topic to kick off this

  8. season. We ended season three with rethinking

  9. the end times and I hope that was life -changing.

  10. I hope that gave you a more hopeful outlook to

  11. life. And so we're going to do the same thing

  12. here. We're going to rethink hell together. And

  13. the same thing is true as with rethinking the

  14. end times. My aim of this is not to get you to

  15. agree with where I have landed. Quite frankly,

  16. if I'm being completely honest, I don't know

  17. yet where I have landed on the topic of hell.

  18. I just don't believe it is what we have been

  19. taught, especially in the Western world. So we're

  20. going to kick this off with this title being

  21. that the word hell isn't in the Bible the way

  22. that you think. We're going to begin this series,

  23. and I understand that people have strong opinions

  24. over this topic, but quite frankly, I know very

  25. few people who have studied it and not simply

  26. regurgitated information. My fear, and I speak

  27. as one who has done this before, is I feel like

  28. there are many times that we just simply regurgitate

  29. information that we have heard. Over the years

  30. instead of actually doing our own studying our

  31. own research into topics and into things and

  32. really Allowing Holy Spirit to be our teacher

  33. I'll never forget one of the things Lance Johnson

  34. told me several years ago He said the Holy Spirit

  35. will be the greatest teacher you've ever had

  36. and that statement has proven to be true. Not

  37. sure that he realized what he was saying to me

  38. but that statement I have held near and dear

  39. to my heart and I would encourage that to everyone.

  40. The Holy Spirit will be, can be the greatest

  41. teacher that you and I have. So I want you to

  42. think about when you hear the word hell What

  43. comes to your mind? Is it flames? Is it torment?

  44. Is it punishment? Is it eternal suffering? But

  45. this is the question I want us to wrestle with

  46. tonight or today or whenever you're listening

  47. to this. What if the picture that we were given

  48. was not actually what scripture meant? And let

  49. me say right off the bat, this is not about watering

  50. down scripture, but it is about taking scripture

  51. seriously enough to study what the words actually

  52. meant to the people who first heard them. Again,

  53. same as we did with rethinking the end times.

  54. It's putting everything back into the original

  55. context to help you and I gain a better understanding.

  56. Many of us myself included inherited beliefs

  57. not from Hebrew nor Greek but from tradition

  58. and tradition if left unexamined can carry fear

  59. that scripture never intended that quite frankly

  60. Jesus never intended so Let me show you something

  61. that probably most people have never been told

  62. I don't know that until doing this study that

  63. I picked up on this But the English word hail

  64. that we have in our in our Bibles today, modern

  65. day English Bibles, is not one original word.

  66. It is actually four different words that was

  67. translated into one English word. I want you

  68. to think about that. Four words, four meanings,

  69. four different contexts, but our English language

  70. collapsed them into a single word. Now, those

  71. words are Sheol, Hades, Gehenna and Tartarus

  72. and we're going to briefly examine each of those

  73. four in this episode and then over the next few

  74. we're going to do a deep dive into each one of

  75. those. But I want you to imagine for just a moment

  76. if we took the words house, apartment, hotel

  77. and barn and translated them all as building.

  78. Technically, is that correct? I'm sure one could

  79. argue that they are all buildings, but it is

  80. incredibly misleading. So if I was to tell you

  81. I want you to go to the building and what I meant

  82. was go into the house and I tell the group of

  83. people this and they all scatter some go to the

  84. house, some go to the hotel, some go to the barn.

  85. They all went to a building, but only a certain

  86. few went to the house that I was actually referencing.

  87. See what happens. This is exactly what happened

  88. with the word hell. Why does this matter? Because

  89. if we misunderstand the words, we misunderstand

  90. the message. And if we misunderstand the message,

  91. we misunderstand God's character. And that's

  92. important for us to take hold of. So we're going

  93. to kick this off with defining SHIO. So that's

  94. the first one we're going to look at. Shio is

  95. a Hebrew word that appears throughout the Old

  96. Testament. Let me kick this off real quickly

  97. here. Shio does not mean a torture chamber. Shio

  98. referred to the realm of the dead. It referred

  99. to the grave. It referred to the unseen place

  100. of death. Psalm 6 and 5 says, In the darkness

  101. of death, who remembers your name and worship?

  102. How could I bring you praise if I'm buried in

  103. a tomb? Again, the word used here for death is

  104. the Hebrew word sheol. It's the realm of the

  105. dead. This is the first Psalm here to mention

  106. the grave or sheol. It is depicted in the poetic

  107. literature of the Hebrew as a vast wasteland,

  108. a stronghold of darkness and a beast of prey.

  109. Notice that this verse has nothing to do with

  110. torment. It is simply describing death. And if

  111. you look at the Old Testament, both the righteous

  112. and the wicked, both of them went to the place

  113. called Sheol. Again, important for us to think

  114. about. Then we have Ecclesiastes chapter 9 verse

    Ecclesiastes 9:10

  115. 10. It says this whatever you do do well for

  116. when you go to the grave Sheo, there will be

  117. no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom Now

  118. I'm curious as I'm looking at these Because I

  119. am using just so, you know, I'm using the passion

  120. translation and I'm also using the new living

  121. Translation, but I wanted to take just a moment

  122. because I didn't do this beforehand I'm gonna

  123. pull this back up in the King James just to see

  124. what the language is so if you look at Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 9:10

  125. chapter 9 verse 10 and Okay, so it does use the

  126. word grave there, so that's good I was just curious

  127. to see that while I'm doing this recording sometimes

  128. it's good for us to stop and do a little Looking

  129. at it together So again for when you go to the

  130. grave she all there will be no work or planning

  131. or knowledge or wisdom So again here we have

  132. not torture imagery. It's simply death imagery

  133. Then we have Psalm chapter 16 verse 10. It says

    Psalms 16:10

  134. for you will not abandon me to the realm of death

  135. Nor will you allow your faithful one to experience

  136. corruption? The new King James would say for

  137. you will not leave my soul in Sheol Now this

  138. passage is an important one to remember because

  139. in Acts chapter 2 verse 27 Peter quotes this

    Acts 2:27

  140. psalm and applies it to Jesus when he says no

  141. wonder my heart is glad and my glory celebrates

  142. my mouth is filled with his praises and I have

  143. hope that my body will live because you will

  144. not leave my soul among the dead nor will you

  145. allow your sacred ones to experience decay so

  146. Peter is quoting this in Acts chapter 2 when

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  147. he's referencing Psalm 16 10. And it's just important

  148. to remember that Jesus entered death, but he

  149. was not left there. This was not about Jesus

  150. escaping torture. This was about Jesus defeating

  151. death itself. Important for us to grab hold of

  152. and to remember. Alright, then we have the word

  153. Hades. This would be the Greek equivalent to

  154. the Hebrew word Sheol. You could say it's the

  155. parallel meaning, essentially. Hades carries

  156. the same general meaning. Again, it's the realm

  157. of the dead. It's not eternal punishment. It's

  158. not final judgment. In Jewish thought, actually,

  159. Hades is a temporary shadowy realm often used

  160. symbolically. Jesus, again, just as the rethinking

  161. in times, Jesus is speaking their language. That's

  162. important to remember. He's speaking to a group

  163. of people that would have understood what he

  164. was referencing and what he was stating. Luke

  165. 16 is where many people will point... to in scripture

  166. as proof of torment. I've heard this argument

  167. myself and it's the story of the rich man and

  168. Lazarus. So I want you to understand though,

  169. Jesus, the same as rethinking in times, Jesus

  170. often used parables, okay, filled with imagery

  171. and familiar to his Jewish audience. So we're

  172. going to look at Luke chapter 16 and we're going

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  173. to read verses 19 through 31. So just bear with

  174. me, you can pause this, get your own Bible out,

  175. run with it with me. We're going to start in

  176. verse 19, Luke chapter 16 says, Jesus continued

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  177. there once was a very rich man who had the finest

  178. things imaginable living every day enjoying his

  179. life of opulent luxury. Opulent simply means

  180. lavishly abundant. Outside the gates of his mansion

  181. was a poor beggar named Lazarus. He lay there

  182. every day covered with boils and all the neighborhood

  183. dogs would come and lick his open sores. The

  184. only food he had to eat was the garbage that

  185. the rich man threw away. One day poor Lazarus

  186. died and the angels of God came and escorted

  187. his spirit into paradise. The day came that the

  188. rich man died. In hell, Hades He looked up from

  189. his torment and saw Abraham in the distance,

  190. and Lazarus was standing beside him in the glory.

  191. The rich man shouted, Father Abraham, Father

  192. Abraham, have mercy on me. Send Lazarus to dip

  193. his finger in water and come to cool my tongue,

  194. for I am in agony in these flames of fire. But

  195. Abraham responded, My friend, don't you remember

  196. while you were alive, you had all you desired.

  197. You surround yourself in luxury. while Lazarus

  198. had nothing. Now Lazarus dwells on the comforts

  199. of paradise and you are in agony. Besides, between

  200. us is a huge chasm that cannot be bridged, nor

  201. can anyone cross from one realm to the other.

  202. Even if he wanted, the rich man continued, then

  203. let me ask you, Father Abraham, please send Lazarus

  204. to my relatives. Hold on I've got I did not have

  205. all my scriptures here. So let me pull this back

  206. up real quick and get the last part of this Sometimes

  207. it pays to go through your notes beforehand But

  208. that's fine we can pick it up back where we left

  209. off But Abraham responded okay we got through

  210. that Abraham replied they've already had plenty

  211. of warning. They have the teachings of Moses

  212. and the revelation of the prophets Let them hear

  213. them What if they're not listening the rich man

  214. added if someone from the dead were to go and

  215. warn them They would surely repent Abraham said

  216. to him if they wouldn't listen to Moses and the

  217. prophets Neither would they be convinced if someone

  218. were raised from the dead? again important scripture

  219. for us to wrestle with First thing I want you

  220. to notice, it's a parable. If you follow what

  221. is happening around this story in Luke chapter

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  222. 16, we have in Luke chapter 15, you have the

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  223. story of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the

  224. lost son, and then you have an unjust steward,

  225. and then you have this story. So nowhere in this

  226. does Jesus stop and tell the crowd, hey listen,

  227. I'm stopping telling parables here, and now I'm

  228. going to give you literal descriptions so again

  229. it's one of these things don't check your brain

  230. at the door and i want you to wrestle some hard

  231. questions now you may read this and come up with

  232. your own questions and questions are perfectly

  233. okay take them to the father take him to papa

  234. take him to holy spirit and wrestle these questions

  235. but here's my first question if this is taken

  236. literally how can a drop of water cool someone

  237. in literal flames Think about that. How could

  238. a drop of water cool someone who is in literal

  239. flames? Let me tell you what a drop of water

  240. would do for somebody You know, it's it's July.

  241. Excuse me. It's August now where I'm at If you

  242. consider this time of year where I am at when

  243. you have 90 plus degree weather And it's a Saturday

  244. and you are mowing your lawn outside It is very

  245. hot Don't care what you say, especially in the

  246. southern part of Virginia with the humidity and

  247. everything else. It can be miserable at times

  248. when you have to do this outside stuff. It'd

  249. be nice, I would think, if you could mow in the

  250. winter time instead. At least you can put articles

  251. of clothing on versus the other option. Just

  252. wrestling that out loud. But if you think about

  253. this... That concept of it being a hundred degrees

  254. outside or 90 degrees outside If someone were

  255. to just bring you a drop of water, it would do

  256. nothing but irritate you It's not going to give

  257. you any sense of relief No, typically most people

  258. they want a bottle of water. They want a cup

  259. of water. Let me have some water because it is

  260. hot and I am sweating more than I'm intaking.

  261. So give me some water please. Give me a propel.

  262. Give me some Gatorade. If you were just to give

  263. me, go get a dropper and just drop some on my

  264. tongue, that's going to do nothing but agitate

  265. me. So I can't see him asking that. for the rich

  266. man asking Lazarus to do that, that's going to

  267. help him. That's not going to be beneficial for

  268. anybody. The other question is this, how can

  269. people in paradise watch and converse with those

  270. being tormented? That to me sounds kind of sickening.

  271. If you get pleasure out of watching someone else

  272. suffer, I would question your heart in that moment

  273. because that's... That's just, to me, it's inhumane.

  274. The next question is this, do the redeemed spend

  275. eternity observing the suffering? Again, kind

  276. of like with the last question, I have a hard

  277. time buying into that, if that's what we're going

  278. to believe. So just understand this is not a

  279. story of a travel brochure of heaven and hell.

  280. It is a parable. It's a story. Luke 16, 14, Jesus

  281. addressed the Pharisees of being lovers of money.

  282. So this story is aimed directly at religious

  283. leaders who believe that wealth equals God's

  284. favor and that poverty equals God's disfavor.

  285. And Jesus, in telling of this parable, is flipping

  286. the entire framework, something Jesus was really

  287. good at. This is the only parable where a character

  288. is named and that also my friend is purposeful.

  289. Lazarus means God is my help. The poor man in

  290. this story is given a name. The rich man has

  291. no name. He is defined only by his status. That

  292. concept alone would have offended the Pharisees.

  293. In their worldview, the rich man should be the

  294. hero and the poor man should be cursed. Why?

  295. Again, goes back to what I just said. They believe

  296. that wealth equaled the favor of God and that

  297. if you did not have wealth, so if you're in poverty,

  298. then it was God's disfavor and Jesus is reversing

  299. this mindset. Also, if you look at this story

  300. and consider Abraham's bosom, it would symbolize

  301. excuse me, it would symbolize honor, covenant,

  302. covenant belonging, it would symbolize intimacy.

  303. So Jesus is essentially saying the one that you

  304. assumed was outside the covenant is actually

  305. resting inside of it. Think about this, wrestle

  306. with this thought, wrestle with this knowledge.

  307. So then we have Hades, the realm of the dead,

  308. not in eternal punishment and Jewish thought.

  309. Again, I said this earlier. Hades is a temporary

  310. shadowy realm often used symbolically. So Jesus

  311. is talking to a group of people in a way that

  312. they would understand what he's attempting to

  313. communicate. Consider the torment now. Even in

  314. torment, the rich man still calls Abraham father.

  315. And he still treats Lazarus as a servant so that

  316. he still never repents. He still centers himself.

  317. Notice what it says, send Lazarus to serve me.

  318. His torment also in the story is not caused by

  319. the wrath of God. His torment is caused by an

  320. unchanged heart that cannot receive mercy. And

  321. my friend I will tell you up front, I have lived

  322. that hell. I have walked through that hell before.

  323. I have walked what I would believe you could

  324. coin the dark night of the soul. I know what

  325. that's like. To live with an unchanged heart

  326. that cannot receive mercy and you're being exposed

  327. to mercy. And then he's in the flame and the

  328. flame often represents exposure, testing, refinement,

  329. inner anguish. This is existential. Excuse me,

  330. this is extensional torment, not God torturing

  331. someone. Think about it like this, it's regret.

  332. Realization, loss of illusion, the burning awareness

  333. of what you missed. The fire simply reveals it

  334. does not revenge. Think about John chapter 3

    John 3:20

  335. verses 20 and 21 It says so the wicked hate the

  336. light and try to hide from it for the light fully

  337. exposes their lives But those who loved the truth

  338. will come into the light for the light will reveal

  339. that that it was God who produced their fruitful

  340. works So what does the light do? What does fire?

  341. We're do it reveals it exposes It's important

  342. for us to grab hold of Then we have the Great

  343. Chasm. It's not a spatial gap. It's a relational

  344. and perceptual divide. This cannot help you understand

  345. that the Chasm already existed during lifetimes.

  346. One lived closed off and self -sufficiency and

  347. one lived open independence. That Chasm already

  348. existed. And then you have... This toward the

  349. end that says they have Moses and the prophets

  350. let them hear them So essentially everything

  351. you need to live differently was already in your

  352. scriptures And then he says neither will they

  353. be convinced if someone should rise from the

  354. dead. Let me help you I did not grab hold of

  355. this until this study think about this concept

  356. Luke is writing his gospel after the resurrection

  357. around 60 AD Remember Jesus Jesus would have

  358. been crucified in about 33 AD. Luke is writing

  359. his gospel around 60 AD. The resurrection has

  360. already happened. Even resurrection won't convince

  361. people who are committed to a system that protects

  362. their privilege. So what this parable is actually

  363. about? Not about an eternal conscience torment

  364. in hell. It's about the danger of wealth plus

  365. religion. It's about identity blindness. It's

  366. about using God to justify indifference. It's

  367. about missing the kingdom while quoting scripture.

  368. This parable is about this age, not the next

  369. one. Or not just the next one. Can you apply

  370. stuff today? 100%. But the parable is about this

  371. age. The current age that Luke was writing to.

  372. The rich man is not in torment because God rejected

  373. him. He's in torment because he never learned

  374. how to receive mercy and death stripped away

  375. the illusion that he never needed it. That's

  376. important for us to remember. Let's look at Revelation

    Revelation 1:17

  377. chapter 1 verse 17 and 18. It says, When I saw

  378. him I fell down at his feet as good as dead,

  379. but he laid his right hand on me and I heard

  380. his reassuring voice saying, Don't yield to fear.

  381. I am the beginning and I am the end, the living

  382. one. I was dead, but now look, I am alive forever

  383. and ever. And I hold the keys that unlock death

  384. and the unseen world, Hades." Now we'll read

  385. a note here from this verse from Dr. Simmons.

  386. It says, Through the victory of Christ's death

  387. and resurrection, He now holds the keys of death

  388. in the unseen world. There is nothing left to

  389. fear, for He holds all authority. He holds all

  390. authority. Now, let me put this in here, and

  391. I'll probably mention this several more times

  392. through this series, but it is something that

  393. I want you to wrestle with. I have been taught

  394. growing up that essentially hell was separation

  395. from God. But if hell is a place that is separated

  396. from God that means there is a place that can

  397. exist outside of God and that place has now become

  398. a God of its own. Think about that. Rewind that

  399. if you need to hear that again. Think about this

  400. concept. If hell is a place That God cannot be

  401. That is separated from him then that place would

  402. have to be able to exist outside of God Just

  403. wrestle with that idea But again not saying I'm

  404. right I'm just trying to give you a different

  405. perspective and bring the questions that I myself

  406. have wrestled before to currently wrestling This

  407. is probably Within the past six months of wrestling

  408. some of this All right, then we have Gehenna

  409. it's the valley jesus referenced in uh When he

  410. was speaking a lot of times so this is um This

  411. word would have often most often translated as

  412. hell in the words of jesus When he spoke had

  413. been gehenna gehenna was a real valley outside

  414. of jerusalem It was known as the Valley of Ben

  415. Hinnom. Now, we'll do a deep dive into this one

  416. next week, but we will take just a glimpse of

  417. it tonight. Gehenna, I want you to understand

  418. this. Gehenna had a very dark history. This would

  419. have been a place of child sacrifices that would

  420. have happened there. And we're going to read

  421. Jeremiah chapter 7 verses 30 through 34. And

    Jeremiah 7:30–34

  422. it says this for Yahweh says the people of Judah

  423. have done what is evil before my eyes. They have

  424. defiled the house that bears my name by placing

  425. their detestable idols inside of it. And in the

  426. Hinnom Valley, they have built shrines of topeth

  427. to sacrifice their sons and daughters in the

  428. fire. Something now pay attention, something

  429. I never commanded, nor did it ever enter my thoughts.

  430. Therefore. The time is coming, says Yahweh, when

  431. it will not be known as Tepeth or the Hinnom

  432. Valley, but the Valley of Slaughter, for people

  433. will bury their dead in Tepeth until no room

  434. is left. Their corpses will be food for the birds

  435. and wild animals, with no one to frighten them

  436. away. I will silence the sounds of mirth and

  437. gladness from the cities of Judah and the streets

  438. of Jerusalem, the happy sounds of wedding feasts,

  439. the voice of the bride and bridegroom, for the

  440. land will become a wasteland. Because of this

  441. history, It became a symbol of judgment and destruction.

  442. Jesus would have warned in Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5:29–30

  443. verse 29 through 30, if your right eye seduces

  444. you to fall into sin then go blind in your right

  445. eye for you're better off losing sight in one

  446. eye than to have your whole body thrown into

  447. hell. And if your right hand entices you to sin,

  448. let it go limp and useless for you're better

  449. off losing a part of your body than to have it

  450. all thrown into hell. And again, that word would

  451. be translated from Gehenna. So Jesus, again,

  452. is using imagery here not to describe eternity,

  453. but to warn about consequences. Jesus is using

  454. common Jewish teaching technique here to communicate

  455. the seriousness of allowing sin to rule your

  456. life. He's communicating the seriousness of allowing

  457. that distorted identity to take hold over your

  458. life. Understand that on the heels of Jesus saying

  459. this, He says you have Excuse me. This is on

  460. the heels of Jesus saying you have heard that

  461. our ancestors were told You must not murder if

  462. you commit murder you are subject to judgment

  463. But I say if you were even angry with someone

  464. you were subject to judgment if you call someone

  465. an idiot you were in danger of being brought

  466. before the court and if You curse someone you

  467. are in danger of the fires of hell again Gehenna

  468. So he's not he's not telling people to mutilate

  469. themselves in this verse if we're to take the

  470. Bible literally then why are there not more people

  471. with only one eye or, quite frankly, no eyes

  472. and no hands? Think about this. Wrestle this

  473. out. He's moving the conversation from external

  474. behavior to the condition of the heart. Remember

  475. the term that I like to repeat a lot of times.

  476. Behavior follows identity. He's telling these

  477. people deal radically with whatever is leading

  478. you away from life I would go as far to say realize

  479. Jesus dealt radically with whatever is leading

  480. you away from life and has made you and I a completely

  481. new creation You just need to hear this truth

  482. and allow truth to set you free from the bondage

  483. of being ruled and led by sin a distorted identity

  484. again Stop and wrestle with some of this. Allow

  485. Holy Spirit to do the revealing in your own life.

  486. Because this stuff is important when you begin

  487. to start wrestling with it. Goodness. So when

  488. you see hell, he's using the word Gehenna. That's

  489. what the audience would have pictured instead

  490. of some distant place of endless torture that

  491. we've been taught. He's confronting a righteousness

  492. based only on the outward rule keeping. The religious

  493. leaders could say, uh, I've never committed adultery,

  494. but Jesus says, let's talk about what is happening

  495. in your heart, the place no one but you and I

  496. can see. I want you to really wrestle with that

  497. because you, you can, you might can say, Hey,

  498. I've not murdered anybody. Okay. You might could

  499. say that. But what about the hate that you hold

  500. in your heart? Maybe you can control your actions,

  501. but who's the one that can fix your heart issue?

  502. And my friend, because I've tried in my life,

  503. that answer is not you. The Holy Spirit is the

  504. only one who can do the transformation inside

  505. of the heart and mind of us as sons and daughters.

  506. It's not you and I who can boast around saying,

  507. look what I've done. The marriage that I have

  508. today with my wife, the relationship that I have

  509. now with my children that's ever so evolving

  510. into a better relationship than it used to be,

  511. is not because I did something right. The only

  512. thing that I can give credit to is that I have

  513. yielded more and more to the Lordship of Holy

  514. Spirit and allowed Holy Spirit to do the transformational

  515. work inside of my own life. I also think there's

  516. another layer worth seeing here. Jesus is showing

  517. that if righteousness depends on perfectly controlling

  518. every desire, none of us can succeed. The Sermon

  519. on the Mount steadily raises the standard. You've

  520. got murder which is caused by anger, adultery

  521. which is caused by lust, loving your neighbors,

  522. loving your enemies. Finally, be perfect as your

  523. father is perfect. If we read only as a new law,

  524. my friend, we're crushed. But if we read it as

  525. Jesus revealing the true depth of the human condition,

  526. it prepares us for the good news that we need

  527. a new heart, not merely better behavior. And

  528. that fits with later promises like those in Ezekiel

  529. 36 where God says He will give His people a new

  530. heart and a new spirit. You see, Jesus isn't

  531. satisfied with people who merely avoid outward

  532. sins. He's after hearts that have been transformed

  533. because transformed hearts naturally produce

  534. transformed lives. Man, this is good news. We

  535. just have to wrestle with it. All right, then

  536. we have the last word here, Tartarus. It's a

  537. rare, but it's an important word. The Greek word

  538. Tartarus appears once in the New Testament and

  539. it's found in Second Peter chapter 2 verse 4

    2 Peter 2:4

  540. says now don't forget God had no pity for the

  541. angels when they sinned but threw them into the

  542. lowest darkest dungeons of Dungeon of gloom and

  543. locked them in chains where they are firmly held

  544. until the judgment of torment so this verse right

  545. here refers to Rebellious spiritual beings not

  546. human souls, which is another important distinction

  547. so I'm going to start wrapping this up. This

  548. will be one of the longer episodes for this series

  549. at least. But many of us were taught to fear

  550. hell before we were taught to understand scripture.

  551. I would go as far to say before you were taught

  552. that you can hear Holy Spirit to teach and speak

  553. to you for yourself. And again, I don't say that

  554. to say that leaders are not important, but you

  555. can have a real relationship with Holy Spirit

  556. yourself who can lead you into all truth. Our

  557. leaders, our pastors, teachers, prophets, evangelists,

  558. apostles important? Absolutely. Our fathers and

  559. mothers important? Absolutely. But but you also

  560. need to understand you can walk with the Holy

  561. Spirit and you can have Holy Spirit teach you

  562. just as much. Fear built on misunderstanding

  563. is still fear. Truth does not remove reverence.

  564. Truth removes terror. That was never meant to

  565. define your relationship with God. I want you

  566. to remember, 1 John 4 .18 would tell us that

  567. perfect love Cast out all fear. The word perfect

  568. love would be telios agape. I'm maybe butchering

  569. that. If you can speak Greek, by all means have

  570. at it. But this is the kind of love revealed

  571. in the Father through the person of Christ. It's

  572. a love that transforms the one who receives it

  573. and overflows towards others including enemies.

  574. It's a mature love, a complete love that Ekobalos

  575. cast out, which is a forceful removal. It's casting

  576. a net into a sea, throwing a stone, casting out

  577. demons, throwing seed on the ground. It implies

  578. movement from inside to outside. And then we

  579. have a mature, complete love forcefully removes

  580. phobos, which is fear, it describes an internal

  581. response to something perceived as powerful or

  582. significant. In a negative use, it refers to

  583. fear that produces anxiety or avoidance. John

  584. also includes the word kulesis, which means punishment,

  585. correction, or penalty. So John is saying love

  586. casts out the fear of punishment. His point is

  587. if you've come to know the Father's mature love,

  588. you no longer live in dread of His punishment.

  589. Think about that. So my friend, this episode

  590. was simply here to create a foundation for us

  591. to build on moving forward. Again, when words

  592. are misunderstood, Papa is misunderstood. When

  593. Papa is misunderstood, fear replaces trust so

  594. over the next several weeks we're going to walk

  595. through these ideas carefully we're going to

  596. walk through them biblically historically um

  597. in my prayer is that by the end of this you won't

  598. just rethink hell but you will rethink the character

  599. of dad that's important too that's probably one

  600. of the most important things is that you learn

  601. to see the father correctly which only happens

  602. through the holy spirit revealing christ to you

  603. And my friend, that is all for week one, season

  604. four. I'm excited to be back with you guys. Um,

  605. share this episode. My email should be somewhere

  606. there. Send me an email. Let me know that you're
