We Are Access – For the 863

Well, let's get to work today, Church fam.

Today we are in part three of a four-part series that leads us up to Easter.

And the series is called We Are Access.

Here's the point of the series.

If you're going to invest your time, your energy, your life into building a church, you should know what it's all about.

And my prayer is that at the end of the series, you are going to say, Man, I am all in.

This is my church, this is my home, this is my family.

And let's all dig in together and let's change the world together.

To get us started today, I was thinking, because today's our 19th birthday, I was thinking about some of the early days of our church.

And access started in my living room 19 years ago, which is crazy.

And then it's been amazing to see miracle after miracle how God has carried us.

We moved from my living room to uh what used to be called the Lakeland Center.

Now it's called the RP Funding Center in central Lakeland.

We were there for a year or a year and a half, and then we moved to the YMCA in South Lakeland.

And that church, that facility has two buildings.

There was one in the back that was kind of hidden, and that's where we met.

I used to think, man, if anybody can just find us, they're gonna love us, but they have to find us first because we were hard to find at all of our invitations, we lost all those invitations, and it was just kind of a miracle that people started coming.

Well, in the earliest days, our church met on Monday nights, and then we moved to Sunday nights, and there was a Sunday night, it was a season, it was a February, our church is maybe 50 or 60 people at this point, and I'll never forget this moment.

There was a guy who had started coming to our to our church, and um, you ever meet someone, and just in your gut, you know there's just something off with them?

Come on, like like you don't want to say it, you don't want to say they were creepy, but this brother was creepy.

Anybody understand what I'm saying?

And like he made me nervous.

Anytime he was around, I was kind of keeping eyes on him, and if he ever started talking to ladies, I would kind of like sneak my way into the conversation and guide him away from them.

And I'll never forget, it was Valentine's weekend, and this brother shows up to church with a couple dozen individually wrapped roses to give to all the single ladies.

I was like, bro, what are you doing?

This is not the bachelor.

What are you doing?

Put them away.

And if because our services were Sunday night, it was Sunday afternoon, we were getting set up for our service, and I had to run an errand, but there was no way I was leaving this dude with all these roses here with all those people.

So I grabbed him and said, bro, jump in the car with me.

Let's just run this errand together.

So we get in the car and we're making small talk, and on the way, he gets kind of fidgety and nervous.

I'm like, bro, what are you doing?

And he goes, um, I know this is super weird, but I just need to tell you, I came tonight, but tonight is the last time I'm going to be coming to access.

And I didn't know what to say in this moment.

On one hand, I was like, yay! And on the other hand, I was like, oh, bro, I'm gonna miss you.

So I just said, okay, but why?

And he said something and it floored me.

He said, the reason is uh this church, just too big.

And I said, This church?

Like, what do you what do you mean?

That's like there's like 50 or 60 people.

You could fire a cannon through this church and not hit anybody.

Like, what are you what are you talking about?

He goes, Well, the church is just too big, and I had a realization.

The realization was any church, it could be 25 people or 25,000 people.

It will feel too big if you don't have someone to know, and if you're not doing something that matters for eternity, it'll just always feel too big.

So I realized that.

This week I was thinking about that story, and I I was thinking about what he said, the church is too big, and I asked this question can a can a church get too big?

Here's a good question for you.

Our church has grown.

19 years of God's faithfulness, we've grown a lot.

Is it possible that a church gets too big?

And so I was thinking about that, and the answer is kind of yes and kind of no.

Like, yes, a church can get too big when all they care about is the church attendance and the church giving.

If all you count is that stuff, like then you've you've gotten off track and you you've missed the point.

A church can get too big if it, you know, walks off of the path of the mission that God has for them.

I believe a church can get too big when we stop focusing on the stuff that actually matters.

A church can get too big when the people who walk through the doors, they when they're just another number in your attendance, like that's when a church can get too big.

But I don't think that's actually the right answer.

I think the right answer of can a church get too big is this.

The answer is no, if it stays on mission.

A church can can get really, really big, but as long as it stays laser focused on the mission, the more people that come, the bigger the church gets, in my opinion, the better it gets, because it has more people who are pouring their lives into something and building something together, which should equal a greater impact, and that's what it's all about.

So, what is the mission?

Well, Jesus, he doesn't hide it, he comes out and says what the mission of the church and really what the mission of his followers should be.

53 times in the book of Matthew, 17 times in the book of Luke, and 42 times in the book of Luke, he says, here's the mission, okay?

It's that the kingdom of God would come to earth.

Let me show it to you in the book of Matthew.

Jesus is teaching the Lord's Prayer, and he says it like this.

He starts the Lord's Prayer, our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Then he says, Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

So essentially, he wants the kingdom of God to come to earth.

Like all around us, the the earth around us, the people around us, the relationships around us should be becoming like the kingdom of God.

This is from the NIV translation of the Bible.

The King James, which is kind of an older translation, it's got a more Shakespearean feel to it.

I love this little difference.

It says, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.

And look at this preposition.

In earth, as it is in heaven.

Now, this is a big deal because why is it in instead of on?

Well, on would mean all around us, but in is different.

Remember in the book of Genesis 1, 2, and 3, it says that God pushes the dirt together and he breathes into the nostrils of this formed of dirt, the body.

He breathes into it this breath of life.

It's the reason that there's colloquialisms like we are from dirt to dirt or from dust to dust.

It's like we are the dirt represented here.

We are earth.

And Jesus is saying, I want your kingdom to come and your will to be done in me and in the world around me.

It's both.

It's not one or the other, it's both.

That the kingdom of God should come, it should invade, and it should start in us and it should spill out to the world around us.

Now we pray that prayer, the Lord's prayer, and I think it's easy for us to miss it because we we don't think about kingdoms.

We live in America, which is it's a constitutional republic or it's a democracy.

We elect our leaders, we elect our president and our government officials, we we elect everybody.

We don't live in a kingdom.

So here, let me give you a definition so we can all be on the same page.

The dictionary definition of a kingdom is a country, state, or territory ruled by a king or queen.

We don't have all that.

Let me give you my definition of a kingdom, okay?

Kingdom is just wherever the will of a king is carried out.

So Jesus said, our responsibility is to pray and to live out what it means to bring the kingdom of heaven to earth.

This is what it's all about.

And I think a lot of Christians, they they make a decision to follow Jesus, and their intentions are probably pure and good, but in the back of their mind, what they really think is it's just fire insurance.

It's just a get out of hell card.

It's not really to be on mission with Jesus.

To be on mission with Jesus is literally this.

It's not just to get into heaven someday when you die, it's to bring the kingdom of heaven to the earth around us.

It's that everywhere you go, everything you do, anything your hands begin to touch should look more and more like heaven.

Well, what is heaven?

It's a place where there's no more darkness, no more evil, no more tears.

It's a place where there's unlimited, unimaginable peace and joy and love and hope and grace.

It's the it's the presence of God should be so in you that everywhere you go, it's like earth becomes a little bit more like heaven.

So since since the beginning of our church, we've had this phrase, and here it is.

It's up there down here.

Like, like if we're gonna be on mission with Jesus, we need to reach up and take a hold of all the things of heaven and bring them down here to earth.

Here we are on our 19th birthday, and by the grace of God, I really do believe that for 19 years we've done that.

We've joined Jesus in the mission of bringing the kingdom of heaven to earth so that everything around us looks more and more like heaven.

So here's what I want to do.

Today, I want to I want to challenge you on this 19th birthday of our church.

I want to challenge you to understand what it means to be a part of our church, and to do this, I'd like to construct an interesting sentence.

If you have your message notes, pull those out.

I want you to understand this.

We are access.

And we are, number one, hope dealing.

Come on, you know the world could use some hope, don't you?

I'll never forget the feeling a few years ago.

I was out I was on a flight, and the flight landed, and it was at one of those big airports where when you land, it takes you 20 minutes to land and then to get to the gate where you can get off.

So I landed and I turned my phone off of airplane motor, and I was just catching up on my text and whatever, and a message came through that a pastor friend of mine had taken his own life.

I saw it and I was like, I saw this guy two weeks before.

We had texted after we saw each other, bro, so good to see you.

Let's definitely connect in the next couple weeks and catch up.

I saw this and I literally felt my body sink into that Delta C.

I'll never forget the feeling of feeling utter, unimaginable hopelessness.

This guy was a pastor.

He's like a professional Christian.

It is his job to spread hope to the world, and he somehow, somewhere along the way, lost.

Lost his hope.

Come on, let's be honest for just a moment.

So many people.

There's people here today at church, and no part of your life feels hopeful.

Christians, we should be dealers of hope.

We should pass it around like candy.

Let me show it to you because this is so important.

Gallup did a poll that literally released just over the last couple weeks that said only 59.2% of U.S.

adults believe that their life will be good in five years.

A study came out a couple years ago from Wall Street Journal and the University of Chicago that said a record 78% of people surveyed didn't think their children's generation will live better than their own, up from 67% in 2019.

The world around us is absent of, devoid of hope.

And as followers of Jesus, I need you to remember this.

We have the solution to the hopelessness of the world.

And listen to me, it's not a government, it's not a president, it's not an elected official, it's not found in finances or any other form of security.

Our hope and the hope that we have to give around to the world is a person his name is Jesus.

This is what it's about.

When I was a kid, my my grandparents lived in Texas and we we lived in South Florida.

And so every year for Christmas and maybe occasionally other times, we would go see them.

And I had this funny memory of when we would go.

We'd go, we'd have fun.

My grandmother was the best.

She would always whisper in my ear, there's bluebell ice cream in the freezer for you, eat as much as you want.

And I did holler at me.

And uh and I love the time with her, but every time we would go, it was the same routine.

We'd spend time, we'd have fun, and when we were going to leave, she would come outside and she would wave at us, but she would ugly cry.

Anyone know what it means to ugly cry?

That's not just when a tear comes down, it's when you're like, you can't breathe, and you got bubbles coming out of places they shouldn't come up out of.

And there was always this sense in me, like, I know why it's sad, but this isn't goodbye.

This is I'll see you later.

Like, like, this is the hope that Christians live with.

As a pastor, I get the best and the worst moments of people.

I get to do their weddings and I get to celebrate newborn babies, but I also get the opportunity to bury people.

And there are some, I have done some funerals that are doozies.

I buried kids.

No parent should ever have to bury their own child.

I've done lots of funerals, but nobody probably loves funerals, but I I like a certain kind of funeral.

I like the funerals where it's a believer who's lived a long, fruitful kind of life.

Because I get to say to those who are listening, even though today feels sad, even though today might feel final, it's not goodbye.

It's I'll see you later.

Why?

Because there is a hope that we have as followers of Jesus.

The hope is that this life isn't all that there is to this life.

In the book of 1 Thessalonians, Paul says it like this He says, brothers and sisters, come on, brothers from different mothers and sisters from different misters, we do not know.

We do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death.

Here's why.

So you do not grieve like the rest of mankind who have no hope.

We we live in a world where people are hopeless and they'll do anything to latch on to any sense of hope.

The church has the hope, and his name is Jesus.

So let's pass it around like candy.

Second thing is we are access and we are hope-dealing party throwers.

I want you to see this.

What does it mean?

It means that church should be a party, and let me show you why.

Luke chapter 15, Jesus is telling three stories back to back.

Luke 15 · chapter mention

And all the stories are different stories, but they have the same application.

The first one is about a shepherd who has a hundred sheep and he loses one.

And you might think that's not a big deal, but it was a big deal to him.

So he went and searched the countryside.

He finds the missing sheep, and when he comes back, he says to his friends, I found him.

Let's celebrate.

We lost this one, but he's found.

And Jesus tells the story, and then he flips it upside down and he says, This, I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Heaven throws a party.

Then if that wasn't clear, Jesus says, Okay, now there's a story of a woman who had ten silver coins.

Scholars think that these ten silver coins might have been the equivalent of a modern-day engagement ring.

And he said, She had ten, but she lost one.

She would sweep her house, look in every corner, light every corner until she found it.

And when she finds it, she gathers her friends and says, Friends, celebrate with me that thing that was so valuable to me that I lost is now found.

And then Jesus says, in the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

So, like, according to Jesus, if one person far from God puts their faith in Jesus, heaven throws a party.

Well, look, I'm just of the opinion that if heaven's gonna party, we should join heaven and we should be a place where we party, right?

We should be a party.

So then Jesus, he goes, Okay, look, maybe sheep and silver coins don't matter.

There was a dad, and he had two sons.

And he loved his boys, but one of his boys said, Dad, I wish you were dead so I could get my half of your estate.

The father does the unimaginable, divides up his stuff, and he gives the one boy his estate, and the boy goes off and he squanders all of it and he lives a wild life.

And when he hits rock bottom and realizes it, he says, I gotta go back to my dad.

And he goes back to his dad, and Jesus tells the story so beautifully that when the father sees the son, he's walking back rehearsing his speech.

The father sees him and he comes running.

Jesus said that his heart was filled with compassion and he ran after his son, who had been gone from him.

He gets to his son and his son goes into his speech.

Father, I've sinned against heaven and against you, and I'm no longer worth it.

And his dad's like, Boy, stop.

Stop talking, stop talking.

And he grabs his servants and it says this.

Father said to his servants, Quick, bring the best robe and put it on him.

Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

Bring the fattened calf and kill it.

Let's have a feast and celebrate.

Come on, ribeis, fillets, and New York strips for everybody up in here.

My boy's home.

That's what he says.

He says, For the son of mine was dead and is alive again.

He was lost and is found.

So they begin to what?

They begin to party.

Okay.

And a lot of people stop there.

But the story goes on because remember, there were two brothers.

And he says that there's a party that's being thrown, but there's this other brother, and he he did this thing.

Um now, I have three kids, Joey, Gavin, and Ella.

My two boys are older.

My daughter is the youngest, and one of the things that I love so much about Ella when she was little, when she was like one and a half or two years old, is anytime we would do anything, if we were making any sort of plan, I think the greatest fear in her life was that she was going to get left out or left behind.

So I could be like, I'm gonna, I'm gonna run to Target to get something.

And Ella would go, and me?

Yes, and you.

Hey, we're gonna we're gonna run to Chick-fil-A to get some food.

And and me?

Like she would say, and me all the time.

And there's this other brother, and he finds out there's a party going on for his brother who had really hurt the family and hurt his dad and left.

And the brother hears the party and he says, And me?

Like, what about me?

What about my needs?

I've been good, I've been faithful, I've been here.

Why is there no party for me?

And think if we're not careful, listen to me, church.

A lot of us started following Jesus like the first son.

We had run so far from him, but he welcomed us back home.

But over time, it's possible for you to unintentionally drift from being like the first son to being like the second son.

It is possible for you to be standing in a church that understands that heaven throws a party, so we better throw a party as well.

And instead of doing that, you're like, and me?

What about me?

Served you, I've loved you, I've given faithfully.

What about me?

But listen to me.

Mature followers of Jesus understand that it's never really been about you.

You are born selfish, but you are born again selfless.

You are born selfish, but you are born again generous.

When you understand this, you start to treat your life a little differently, and you start existing for yourself and you start existing for the world around you because we're we are access and we are hope dealing and we are party throwers.

And here's the last one I want you to understand.

We are also for the 863.

And I need you to get this.

Like, it took me so long to figure this out because it used to be we are for Lakeland, and then God gave us an awesome church in Bartow.

I love you, Bartow, location.

You are awesome.

Love you.

So, like, how do we say it?

And I don't know how we say it, but this will work for now.

And I say for now because I believe that God's gonna continue to expand our church and we're gonna reach more people, and someday 863 won't be big enough to contain all that God's gonna do through access.

But for now, we're gonna be about the 863.

Well, what does it mean?

The 863 is our area code, it represents a bunch of people, and if we're gonna be for them, it means we're gonna be for what Jesus was about for them.

Jesus said it, he didn't hide it.

Luke chapter 19, Jesus said, for the Son of Man, talking about himself, he came to seek and to save the lost.

Okay, if Jesus is about that, look at me, church.

We better be about it.

Let me be as strong as I possibly can.

If you want a church that's just for you, you pick the wrong place.

If you want a church that all it does is like give you something to think about and just maybe teaches you a word in Hebrew that you didn't know before, there's lots of great churches in Lakeland.

But if you are willing to roll up your sleeves, if you are willing to serve the world around you, and if you are willing to join Jesus on his mission to seek and save the lost, you are going to love this church.

Like we're gonna throw a party, we're gonna spread hope around like confetti, and we are going to be about the 863.

So if you are at church last weekend, thank you.

If you were at church last weekend, told you today is our birthday, but we're giving you a gift.

Let me show you the gift, but let me show you what it actually is.

Today we have church for everybody up in here.

It says on the front, we are access, and we are.

If you're a part of this thing, you're a part of something that God is building that's bigger than all of us, and I love that so much.

But I want to show you the back.

And the back says this it says, Access church is here for good, which is true.

We are here for the good of those around us, and we are not going anywhere.

But I want you to see this.

There's three maps.

This represents our three locations, the three parts of territory that God has given us to reach the 863.

And underneath it it says for the 863.

Let me show you this.

This is important.

This is not just a t-shirt.

If you need just a t-shirt, you can go to Walmart Target.

Okay.

This is not just a t-shirt, this is a prayer.

And every time you put it on, would you pray, God, let me be a part of Jesus' mission to seek and save the lost.

May I be about what you're about.

That's what it's about.

So look, we bought a lot of shirts, cost a lot of money.

If you don't give, find someone in our church who does give and shake their hand and thank them, because we have the most irrationally generous people imaginable who make something like this possible.

Let me show you what it means to be a part of being for the 863.

According to my research assistant, ChatGPT, um, there are 1.2 million people live in the 863 area code.

1.2 million.

Okay.

Remember, uh, remember how I started the message?

I asked this question.

Can a church get too big?

Remember that?

People would look at our church now and say, we're a we're a mega church.

We're in the top 1% of church sizes in the country.

Okay.

Who cares?

There's 1.2 million people in our area code.

Based on our normal Sunday attendance, that means we are reaching 0.25% of our area code.

What does it mean?

It doesn't mean we're a mega church, it means we're a microchurch with a mega mission.

This is what we're about.

So look at me.

We are on mission with Jesus.

Every time you put the shirt on, would you say, Jesus, let me just be a part of what you're about?

Like, like, may my life matter.

May you not just wear it, may it be a prayer you wear as much as you can.

Please wash it occasionally, but wear it as much as you can.

So let me make, let me let me take one last step and then we'll be done, okay?

How can we be for the 863?

How can we be about the mission Jesus is about?

What's going to require something of you?

In fact, for these next couple minutes, I want to challenge you to make it personal.

I want to challenge you to really see that God has a plan and it involves you.

I want to show you how to share your faith.

I want to show you how to invite someone into relationship with Jesus or how to invite them into church.

Number one is this you have to accept the personal responsibility.

Did you know that someday you will stand before the living God and give an account for your life?

And God's gonna say to you, don't you realize I placed you in that neighborhood on purpose?

And I gave you that job on purpose, and you work out at that gym with those people every day on purpose?

Don't you realize your kid's soccer coach was in your life on purpose?

You have a responsibility not just to live your life, but to live your life on mission with Jesus.

You're responsible.

Number two is you need to build a personal relationship.

What does it mean?

You ever seen a street preacher?

Someone with a megaphone, or they they'll set up a, they'll have their card and like a speaker will come out of it and they're just yelling at people, Turnerburn, you're going to hell.

I don't know if anyone has ever made a meaningful decision to follow Jesus who's been yelled at that you're going to hell.

But when people know you care, it changes things.

Theodore Roosevelt said it like this people don't care how much you know, so they know how much you care.

Why don't we care for the people around us?

Invest your life in them.

And when you've done that, number three, and this is important, you need to share your personal story.

Jesus said, Acts chapter 1, verse 8, he said, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, into the ends of the earth.

Acts 1:8

What's a witness?

It's just someone who tells what they've experienced.

Can I show you how easy this is?

Hey, tell me your story.

I want to know everything about you.

Tell me your story.

Ask questions about their story.

Most people, when you are genuinely interested in them, which is so uncommon these days, will be interested back at you.

And if Jesus has changed your life, I'm not saying work him into your story.

I'm saying he is your story.

So tell your whole story.

Number four, when you've done this, this is the this is the one people struggle with, you got to give a personal invitation.

What does it mean?

Well, this can mean two things.

You you might give them an invitation to say, listen, Jesus has changed my life.

I want to pray with you now to let him change yours.

And you can pray with him right there.

Also, I don't think this is the whole strategy, but I do think a part of a of a strategy of sharing your faith is having a church that you actually trust to bring your friends to.

Can I tell you, we've been working on our Easter service for weeks.

I've been working on my message for weeks.

We are ready to welcome thousands of people to all of our church locations.

We are we are ready for them.

You you need a church that you feel comfortable inviting your family and your friends who are far from God to.

Remember, I said this a second ago, I said we are for the 863.

If there's 1.2 million people in our area, statistically, 81%, according to the latest research I can find, have no connection to church or God whatsoever.

81%.

That equals like just under 1 million people.

It's like 960,000 people.

If you were to take those people and line them up single file order, and each person took up one linear foot, the line of people in the 863 would stretch from Central Florida at Polk County, all the way down the Turnpike, all the way down I-95 to West Palm Beach, a hundred and eighty miles of people.

It's our responsibility to make the line a little shorter.

It's your responsibility to share your faith and to invite people in your circle to follow Jesus and to church.

This is the reason that Easter is such a big deal.

It's because this is the weekend people say yes to church.

I'm not asking you to invite your family and friends because I need full services.

We have plenty of full services.

I'm asking you to invite your family and friends because heaven and hell are realities and we are on mission with Jesus.

So I double dog dare you this week.

Just this week.

Why don't you send a text to somebody?

And send the website, EasterRedaxis.com.

Tell them what service you're coming to, invite them.

Tell them you'll sit at any service they're willing to come to if they'll just come and sit with you.

We won't embarrass you, we won't make church weird for you.

We will present the beauty and the hope of who Jesus is in the most beautiful way we possibly can.

But then that's not enough.

I challenge you.

I triple dog dare you.

I don't even know if that's a thing.

Triple dog dare you.

To be sitting next to someone that you've personally invited yourself this Easter.

Come on, we live in a world where boys don't talk to girls anymore, they slide into DMs.

Don't be that person.

Boys, look at me.

If you like a girl, tell her.

Like share with her, okay?

Same is true when it comes to sharing your faith.

Don't settle for a digital, like put it on your social media, put it on Instagram, put it on Facebook, put it on whatever you've got.

But listen to me.

That's not enough.

I want to challenge you to make it personal.

So that when you stand before God someday, you can say, I gave you everything.

Would you bow your head and close your eyes all across this place?

Church fam, listen to me.

As as I pray, don't get up and leave to get in the front of the t-shirt line.

Stay here.

This is this is what it's all about.

So, God, give us courage.

Give us the kind of courage required to be the kind of people who can actively and actually join Jesus on his mission to seek and save the lost.

God forgive us if we've made following Jesus all about us and what we get out of it.

May we be the kind of people.

And collectively, may we be the kind of church who joins Jesus on what matters most to him, which is to seek and save the lost.

Jesus, may Access Church continue to be the kind of church that's full of hope dealing.

Spread the hope that we have in you.

Party throwing, may we join heaven in celebrating when people come to faith in Jesus.

And may it never just be about our own selfishness.

And may we be for the 863, which means until you expand us beyond the 863, may we be consumed with reaching our friends and our family members and those who are around us.

May we make the line a little bit shorter by reaching more and more people.

Thank you that we've grown as a church, but may we always remember that we are a micro-church compared to the millions of people around us.

But may we live with a mega mission, which is Jesus' mission, to seek and save the lost.

With your head still bowed and eyes still closed, maybe you came to church and you don't even know if you're right with Jesus right now.

Maybe this means you've never started following him, or maybe you just walked away, but today you need to come back to following him.

If that's you, would you have courage and raise your hand right now if that's you?

Come on at all of our locations.

I'm gonna ask you to pray this prayer with me.

And I want you to say it out loud and mean it with your heart.

In our church family, we're gonna pray out loud with you because nobody at this church stands alone.

So, all across this church, would you pray this out loud with me?
