We're going to be in the book of Acts, chapter 3.

We're going to begin this morning in verse 11.

Before we get there, let's remember what's going on so far in this book.

In Acts, chapter 3, or especially in Acts chapter 3, at the beginning, where we were last week, peter and John entered into the temple.

As they entered the temple, as they were entering, they encountered a lame man who was begging for alms at the beautiful gate, and in the process of this encounter, the man was healed.

As a continuation of the work of Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, through Peter and John.

And after this man was healed, all were astounded and amazed.

And what happens now, as we come to our passage today?

What is happening is Peter is taking advantage of the opportunity that has been placed before him to bear witness of Christ.

We've talked about how, in Acts, chapter 1, the call for the apostles was to be witnesses, that Jesus told them they would become witnesses after the Holy Spirit had come upon them.

And so now they have an opportunity.

They had an opportunity, through the healing of this man, to show the continuing work of Jesus.

But now Peter has the opportunity, through his words, to proclaim, and what he's going to do in this passage is he is going to proclaim that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and what we're going to see happen is he is going to, as he proclaims Jesus as the Christ, he is going to call people to faith and repentance in Jesus.

For us today, as we encounter this passage, we need to hear the same message.

We need to hear the message today that Jesus is the Christ who saves, he is the source of our salvation, and we need to respond.

Actually, we must respond in faith and repentance.

The question that we want to answer today is this how did Peter point Jesus?

How did he point to Jesus as the Christ?

So let's read this morning in Acts, chapter 3, if you're able to stand this morning and read with me as we give honor to the reading of God's Word, we're going to begin reading in verse 11 and we're going to read down through verse 26.

While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's, and when Peter saw it, he addressed the people, men of Israel, why do you wonder at this or why do you stare at us as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?

The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant, jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate when he had decided to release him.

But you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the author of life, life whom God raised from the dead.

To this we are witnesses.

And his name, by faith in his name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all and now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance or did, as did also your rulers, but what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.

Repent, therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send the Christ appointed to you, jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets.

Long ago, moses said the Lord, god will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.

You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you, and it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.

And all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and those who came after him also proclaimed these days you are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your father, saying to Abraham and in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

God, having raised up his servants, sent him to you first to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.

Let's pray together.

God, thank you for today.

Thank you for the opportunity that we have to open your word, to engage with your word.

God, may we stop just for a little while this morning and intently look at your word and hear your word.

God be honored here today.

We love you.

Jesus is in your wonderful name.

We pray Amen.

You may be seated.

So understand what's happening in verse 11.

In verse 11, it says while he the he here is referring to the man who Peter and John had healed While he clung to them, while he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's.

Now, we've seen this portico before, not in Acts, but in the other Gospels.

Actually, in John chapter 10, we see this same portico.

But in John chapter 10, in Solomon's portico, or also called Solomon's colonnade portico are also called Solomon's colonnade we see Jesus stand and we see him preach a sermon very similar to what what what Peter is about to preach here in in John 10.

Let's just go back and look at what Jesus said at Solomon's colonnade in John 10, starting in verse 22.

At that time the feast ofication took place in Jerusalem, it was winter and Jesus was walking in the temple in the colonnade of Solomon.

So here we are, we find them in the same place.

So understand this probably hasn't been a significant amount of time in between these two things happening.

Probably hasn't been that long.

I mean, jesus' whole ministry was three years, so it's probably been at least less than three years, probably even less time than that that Jesus stood in this same place where Peter is about to stand and preach and he says this to the people.

So the Jews gathered around him and said to him how long will you keep us in suspense?

If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.

Jesus answered them.

I told you, and you don't believe the works that I do in my Father's name.

Bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.

My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.

I give them eternal life and they will never perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one, no one, will snatch them out of my hand.

My father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of my father's hand.

I and my father are one.

The Jews picked up stones again to stone him, and Jesus answered them have I shown you many good works from the father?

For which one of them are you going to stone me?

The Jews answered it's not for good works that we're going to stone you, but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.

Jesus answered them.

Is it not written in your law?

I said you are gods, if he called them gods to whom the word of God came and scripture cannot be broken, do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, you're blaspheming, because I said I am the Son of God.

If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe in me.

But if I do them, even though you do not believe in me, believe the works that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.

Again, they sought to arrest him but he escaped their hands.

He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first and there he remained and many came to him and they said John did no sign.

But everything that John said about this man was true and many believed in him there.

So see what's happening.

Jesus stands and he proclaims to the Jews who are there at Solomon's portico, at Solomon's colonnade.

They come to him and say hey, jesus, if you're the Christ, would you just tell us?

He said I've told you, I've told you time and time again, yet you don't believe because you're not my sheep.

My sheep hear my voice, they know my voice and they follow me.

You don't because you're not my sheep.

He said I'm doing the works of the Father, and if I do the works of the Father, you should believe in me.

But if I don't do the works of the Father, don't believe in me.

They picked up stones to stone him and he said which one of the works are you stoning me for?

That's all, that's what I've done.

I've been doing good works.

Which one are you going to stone me for?

They said it's not because of the works, it's because you blaspheme.

He said look to the Jews.

They are gathered around him again and here is this man who has just been healed, clinging to their legs.

They look at him, they see him, they know what has happened.

They know this man has been the lame man who is sitting at the beautiful gate for all this time.

They know it's him, they've seen it, they've all already been astounded by this and Peter begins to preach.

He begins to preach this message very similar to what Jesus said, because in his teaching back in John 10, jesus said I am the Christ, the Son of God.

And now Peter is standing and declaring that he is the Christ, the Son of God, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

So let's look at this sermon and see how did Peter point to Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God One?

He does so through the names of Jesus.

Hear what Peter says right here.

He says right at the beginning that it's not because of me that this man is healed, it is because of Jesus.

He says men of Israel, why do you wonder at this?

Or why do you stare at us as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?

No, it's not because of Jesus, or not because of Peter or because of his piety, it's not because of his power, it's not because of the power of John or John's righteousness.

We know that.

It is because of Jesus.

He says down in verse 16, and his name, by faith in his name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know.

We see the name of Jesus is evoked here, the name of Jesus Last week we talked about this and the commentator, john Polehill.

He said this about names in the Bible.

He says, in the biblical sense, a name is far more than a label.

It represents a person and is an extension of that person's being and personality.

To invoke Jesus is to call upon his authority and his power.

Peter begins to preach and says.

He points to Jesus as the Christ through the names of Jesus.

So what names do we see here?

One of the first ones we see is servant.

He begins and he says in verse 13, the God of of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, the God of our forefathers.

And in in calling God by those names, what he's, what Peter is beginning to do, is he is pointing back and he is reminding the Jews that that this is the God of the covenant, that they are people of the covenant that God has chosen them to to bless the nations.

He points to it again there, towards the end, in verse 25.

And he says verse 25, for you are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your father, saying to Abraham and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed, all the families of the earth be blessed.

So he is saying listen, you're those people, you're the sons of the covenant that God chose to be a blessing to the world.

That is you.

And now what is happening is he has sent his servant, jesus.

We see the name of servant given to Jesus.

We see this name in the New Testament for Jesus a lot.

But we especially see it in the Old Testament, in Isaiah, chapter 52, verse 12, chapter 52, 13 through 53, 12.

I won't read that whole passage.

I know we've read a lot this morning and we're going to read some more, but let me read part of it, because what we see here in Isaiah is we see not just Jesus, that he is a servant, but that he is a servant who suffers.

In Isaiah 53, verse 4, he says this and surely he, isaiah, is pointing to the Christ, the Messiah who is going to come.

Christ the Messiah who is going to come.

That Peter is saying is proclaiming, as Jesus he says.

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

Yet we esteemed him.

Stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities, cursed for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.

Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace and with his wounds we are healed.

All we, like sheep, have gone astray.

We have turned everyone to his own way and the Lord has laid upon him the iniquity of us all.

Jesus.

Jesus came and to fulfill the covenant he became the servant of God who laid down his life for the iniquity of the people.

He was the servant.

But this word that we use for servant is also the word that is used in other places as son.

So while we need to understand that Jesus came and he came as a, he suffered, he came as the suffering servant we also need to understand that he is the chosen son of God.

He was chosen for this task, amen.

He was chosen to do this.

This was God's plan from the beginning.

And he, the servant, the son of God, came to die for us.

Peter is pointing to Jesus as the Christ through the names.

We see it in the name servant.

We also see it right there when he calls Jesus the holy and righteous one in verse 14.

But you deny the holy and righteous one.

We've seen already in the book of Acts.

Jesus, or Peter, proclaimed Jesus as the holy one In Acts, chapter 2, verse 17,.

When Peter is proclaiming, when Peter is, when he is preaching on the day of Pentecost, he would come in verse 17 and he quotes from Psalm, chapter 16, verse 10.

Psalm, chapter 16, verse 10.

Psalms 16:10

David writes this for you will not abandon my soul to Sheol or let your holy one see corruption, see holy means to be separated apart, to be set apart.

And so what David is saying is you will not abandon my soul to Sheol.

Well, listen, david was.

He died, so he is pointing to another.

This is a messianic psalm where he is saying another is coming that will not be abandoned to Sheol, the holy one.

In the holy one he says in verse 10 you let your holy one, you will not let your holy one, see corruption.

That is Jesus.

He is the holy one.

Peter has already proclaimed it in Acts 2.

David is proclaiming it in Psalm, chapter 16.

Jesus is that holy one who is set apart, who will not see corruption so that he can make a way for us to be saved.

He is the holy one.

He is also the righteous one In Matthew, chapter 21,.

Matthew 21 · chapter mention

We see Jesus right before the triumphal entry.

We see Jesus right before the triumphal entry and as he is getting ready to enter into Israel, on the back of a colt, on the back of a donkey.

He quotes from Zechariah, chapter 9, verse 9.

In Zechariah, 9, 9, zechariah writes this Rejoice greatly, o daughter of Zion, shout aloud, o daughter of Jerusalem, behold, your king is coming to you, righteous and having salvation.

Is he Holy and mounted on a donkey on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

In Matthew 21,.

Jesus quoted, he quoted, matthew quoted this prophecy about Jesus that Jesus was entering into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.

And he is hear this, righteous for our salvation.

Jesus is the holy one, he is the righteous one.

He came, god set him apart, he was righteous, he lived a perfectly righteous life and he life and he was delivered up by the Jews there before Pilate.

Pilate was even ready to let him go, it says.

But no, they demanded a murderer instead of Jesus.

And Barabbas was freed and Jesus went to the cross.

But because he went to the cross and because he arose again, because he was holy and because he was righteous, he took upon himself the wrath of God so that we may be saved.

He is the holy and righteous one.

He goes on and say another name that he lists here, as it says in verse 15, and you killed the author of life.

I love this.

The author of life.

That word author could have two different kind of meanings here.

One, it could mean he is the author or the originator of life.

That he is the originator of life, we see that in John, chapter 1, verses 1 through 4, when John writes this in the beginning was the word that is Jesus, and the word was with God and the word was God.

John 1:1–4

He was in the beginning with God.

Listen to this, verse 3.

All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made.

That was made In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

He is the author of life, he is the originator of life, begins with him.

Not anything was made that was made without him.

He is the originator of life.

Not only that, another, another thing that that this word author of life means.

It could mean the leader or the pioneer of life.

He is the leader of life.

Paul talks about this in Colossians, chapter 1, verse 18, when he he says he writes this to the church at Colossae, he says and he is the head of the body, the church, that's Jesus.

Colossians 1:18

Jesus is the head of the body, the church.

And then he goes on and he says he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything we might be, that he might be preeminent, he is the leader.

The that word, first born, there shows that he is the pioneer of resurrection.

And you say grant.

How can you say that?

Because, yes, while jesus was resurrected, others have been resurrected.

Yes, but guess what happened to them later?

They died.

Not jesus, he is still alive.

He is the leader in the resurrection, he is the pioneer in the resurrection and it is because he has done that, because he has led the way in that Guess what?

One day we will be resurrected.

Because he is the pioneer and he is the leader in the resurrection.

And he says isn't it amazing?

In this sermon here he says you killed the author of life, whom God raised from the dead.

God raised him from the dead.

He is the firstborn and in all things he is preeminent.

He is the giver, the originator of life.

He is the holy one who was set aside.

He is the righteous one who lived a righteous life so that he could die in our place and so he could bring us to this final name that we see for Jesus here.

The name Jesus, the name Jesus.

It means the Lord is my salvation, the Lord is my salvation, the Lord is my salvation.

Peter is pointing to Jesus being the Christ, the Son of God, who died for us through his names.

In this sermon, not only is he pointing to Jesus being the Christ through his names, but he is also pointing to Jesus being the Christ from the prophets.

From the prophets, he says in verse 18, but what God foretold by the mouth of the prophets, that is, his Christ would suffer.

He thus fulfilled From the prophets.

We've read it from the prophets.

We've read it Already this morning.

Zechariah prophesied, david prophesied, isaiah, isaiah prophesied we read it already, we won't read it again.

But Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be not just the serving servant, but he would be the suffering servant, that he would come, that he would suffer, as the prophets foretold.

And he has now fulfilled by the mouth of the prophets.

He talked about how Jesus would suffer, but he also talked about how he would fulfill Down in verse 20, he says and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

We've talked about this.

Let me remind you of this idea of the kingdom of God that is present in the book of Acts and is present throughout the New Testament.

It's the idea of this present, but not yet reality of the kingdom of God.

We know that Jesus came when he came the first time, he brought the kingdom of God with him.

How do we know that Jesus came when he came the first time?

He brought the kingdom of God with him.

How do we know that the works, the signs, all the signs that Jesus performed, they pointed to him being the Messiah.

They pointed to him being the Christ.

They pointed to him bringing the kingdom of God with him.

Then how do we know that?

Look at the signs.

What are the signs that we see?

We see him healing, bringing, having power over sickness.

We see him calming storms, having power over nature.

We see him raising the dead, having power over death.

We see him raising the dead, having power over death.

We see him his resurrection, not just having power over, having authority over death, but having power over death and defeating it.

We see him providing forgiveness.

He brought the kingdom of god and we live in the present reality of the kingdom of God.

It is alive.

The kingdom of God is God reigning and ruling in our lives.

It is here, it is today, but it is also not yet.

Says Jesus goes into heaven and he is waiting for all things to be restored.

A day is coming, a day is coming when Jesus will return and we don't have to deal with temptation any longer, we don't have to deal with sin any longer, we don't have to deal with sickness any longer.

We don't have to deal with sickness any longer, we don't have to deal with death any longer.

Jesus is going to return and all things will be restored.

Amen, how we look forward to that day.

It was told of by the prophets, and Jesus, the Christ, the Messiah, is the one who brought the kingdom of God and who will come again when all things have been restored.

He will also be a prophet like Moses.

He goes on and says in verse 22,.

He goes on and says in verse 22, and it shall be that every soul who Verse 22, moses said the Lord, god, will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.

You shall listen to him and whatever he tells you, and it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.

Moses came and he spoke words of God to the people.

I was just talking to someone the other day as we were going through our reading of Scripture.

We were just reading about the tent of meeting you remember when Aaron and Miriam Spoke against Moses.

They got jealous of him and they said hey, moses, we can speak for God too.

And God said okay, y'all, come on out, all three of you, to the tent of meeting.

And here's what God said.

He said I spoke, I speak, I speak, I speak prophecies through visions, through dreams, but not with my servant Moses.

I speak to him face to face.

A prophet is going to arise, like Moses, who not only does God speak with face to face, but who is God.

And as we listen to that, to him, and receive salvation from him, we will be saved.

But as we reject his words, the end is destruction.

And he says From the time of Samuel, through all the prophets, they have proclaimed how Israel.

He has proclaimed to these people how they are the children of covenant Through whom God is going to bless this world.

Jesus, peter has proclaimed him as the Christ through the names of Jesus in his sermon, he has proclaimed him as Christ from the prophets of the Old Testament.

But finally, this morning we're going to see that Peter is going to proclaim Jesus as the Christ through his call of response to the people.

Go back to verse 16 and see what he says.

And in his name, by faith in his name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health.

In the presence of you all, peter is calling the people to faith.

Now we have to ask the question here because it may not be clear to us whose faith, whose faith saved this man?

Well, obviously we've got to see the faith of Peter and John right.

The faith of Peter and John to stop and say, hey, look at me, arise and walk.

It required them faith to stop to see this guy.

It required faith for them to say, hey, get up and walk.

It required great faith on the part of Peter and John.

But wouldn't it also require some faith of the man All?

Throughout the New Testament, jesus even said your faith has made you well.

So whose faith?

John Polehill again said it like this For, after all, faith is the greatest miracle of all, and that miracle stood open to all in Solomon's colonnade that day.

See, I think faith is something that's a little bit we don't quite totally understand.

I think it was the faith of Peter and John that listened to God who stopped and sought this man out and called on this man.

But I think it's also the faith of this man to respond.

You say, grant, that's great.

He's talking about healing this man.

Listen, the call to faith that Peter is offering is not just for healing of this man's legs, it is healing for this man's soul.

And hear me, healing for this man's soul, and hear me faith saving faith happens on the faith that is granted to us by God, the Father, because we are dead in our transgressions and sins.

God gives us faith, but we also have to respond in faith.

Faith is the greatest miracle of all and listen, it is not a blind faith.

It's not a faith that we just have to take with no evidence.

Look at the evidence.

Look at the evidence that has happened here in this place.

The man's healed.

He's sitting there, he's healed.

Look's sitting there, he's healed.

Look at what Jesus has done.

They're going to take in chapter 4, they're going to take Peter and John and they're going to arrest them and they're going to get on to them because they're proclaiming and they're teaching in Jesus' name.

But you know what they never do when they have Peter and and john, they never deny the resurrection.

You know why too many people had seen it.

It's not a blind faith that he's calling us to.

It's just faith to believe that god is who he says he is and doing what he says he does.

We need to have faith.

But he doesn't just call them to faith, he calls them as well to repentance.

Look in verse 19.

Repent, therefore, and turn back.

Repent, therefore, and turn back.

Turning back is what repentance is.

It is for so long these people have been walking in their own way, following their own path, and what God says do is turn back to me.

Repentance is a turning away from our sins and turning towards God.

John MacArthur says it is a change of mind that leads to a change in behavior.

It is a turning away from our sin and turning towards God, and that happens as we place our faith in Jesus Christ and as we come to Him and place our faith and we repent and we follow Him.

Listen to what he says.

Happens in verse 19.

That your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send the Christ appointed for you.

Jesus.

Listen as we place our faith in Jesus and repent and turn away and turn back to God.

He blots out our sins, he makes it just as if we had never sinned.

He cleanses us from all unrighteousness and then a time of refreshing comes to us because we live in the presence of the Lord.

It doesn't say easy times, it doesn't say everything is going to be smooth, but it says even in the hard times there is refreshing because we are in the presence of Jesus.

And then he says one day, one day, jesus is going to come back, that he may send the Christ appointed to you, jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all things About which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

The restoration that we've talked about is the restoration for believers, for those who have placed their faith in him and turned to him for salvation.

Oh, hear me this morning.

Jesus is the Messiah, he is the one who came.

He is the Messiah, he is the one who came.

He is the one, the holy and righteous one, who was set apart and lived a righteous life so that he may be delivered up, to be murdered, to be killed, but also so that God may raise him and through that resurrection he becomes a blessing to the nations, which includes you and me, so that we can find salvation in him If you have never trusted Christ for your salvation?

Hear me, hear me.

Have people that say, all the time, grant you don't know what I've done, hear me, hear me.

Have people that say, all the time, grant you don't know what I've done?

Probably not, but he does.

He has always known.

And the offer that Jesus, when you have faith in him and repent and turn to him, that offer is offered to you that your sins will be blotted out.

It doesn't matter what you've done, your sins will be blotted out and we will find refreshing in the presence of the Lord and he is going to come one day and restore all things.

That is a promise for you when you have faith in Jesus and you repent of your sins.

If you've never done that this morning, listen, we want to offer you a time to do that.

In just a few moments we're going to stand and we're going to sing a hymn of invitation and we are inviting you to trust in Christ, to trust in Jesus as your Messiah, to place your faith in him and repent of your sins so that he may blot those sins out and you can find refreshing and restoration in him If you have trusted in him, if you have trusted in him, but your soul seems far from being refreshed right now.

The gospel message is for you too.

He offers you refreshing in his presence and sometimes what we do is we, while we haven't lost our salvation, sometimes when we have sin in our lives, that which we need to repent, it clutters the communication.

It messes with the relationship.

But here's the promise that Christ offers to believers If you confess your sins, he is faithful and just to forgive you your sins and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness as a believer.

If you're not finding refreshing in him, maybe what needs to happen this morning is you need to repent of some sin and be refreshed in his presence as we sing our hymn of invitation.

If that's you, I would love to invite you to come forward and we will pray with you.

But you can also come to these steps right here and kneel at this altar and do business with God.

If this morning you're looking for a church home as we sing this hymn of invitation, we invite you to come.

We would love to walk together as we follow Jesus Christ, our Messiah.

Whatever decision God is placing on you, I'm going to pray for us as we sing.

If you have a decision to make, we invite you to make that, to come down and come forward during this time of invitation.

Let me pray for you, god.

Thank you for today.

Thank you for how you love us and for all you've done for us.

God, we praise you, christ.

We praise you for coming and being the Christ, our Messiah, who died and arose to offer us salvation.

God, I pray this morning for those who don't know that you will give them the faith that they need and they will respond in faith, repent and come to you.

God, for those who just need to confess God, we pray that this morning will be a time of confession.

God, we ask you to work as only you can work, move as only you can move, and in that movement we give you all the glory.

Jesus, it's in your wonderful name that we pray, amen.
