  1. If you've got a Bible, just real quick, who's going to get baptized today?

  2. You can be impromptu. We can do it in your Wranglers or whatever.

  3. Okay, I've got one there.

  4. We figured it would just be a few, and that's great.

  5. But to follow the Lord in baptism is always a glorious experience.

  6. I know it was when I got baptized at Wild Waters in Las Vegas.

  7. Sin City. It just seemed to fit for some reason.

  8. Had to go to Sin City to get all tuned up with Jesus.

  9. So if you have a Bible, we're going to finish the fifth chapter of the Gospel of Luke.

  10. And I titled the message, Jesus' Calling.

  11. And we're going to look at three things here very quickly,

  12. which is the calling of Matthew or Levi, the bridegroom and the old and new wineskin.

  13. And Jesus is coming off of just healing this guy.

  14. But he didn't heal him immediately.

  15. You remember the first statement that he said to him,

  16. your sins are forgiven.

  17. Have you had that conversation with the Lord where he lets you know your sins are forgiven?

  18. Oh, how good it is to be forgiven.

  19. Amen?

  20. And because we need that forgiveness.

  21. We need to be cleansed.

  22. It's like I said last week, it's the only cure for guilt.

  23. And we've all been guilty of sinning and falling short of the glory of God.

  24. And so I'm just going to start by reading the rest of the chapter.

  25. So that's about 13 verses.

  26. Hang with my slow pace.

  27. We will start in verse 27.

  28. And it says,

  29. After these things, he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office.

  30. And he said to him, follow me.

  31. And so he left all, rose up and followed him.

  32. Then Levi gave him a great feast in his own house.

  33. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with him.

  34. And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against his disciples saying, why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?

  35. Jesus answered and said to them, those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

  36. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  37. Then they said to him, why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers and likewise those of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?

  38. And he said to them, can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them?

  39. But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them.

  40. Then they will fast in those days.

  41. Then he spoke a parable to them.

  42. No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one.

  43. Otherwise, the new makes a tear.

  44. And also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old.

  45. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled.

  46. And the wineskins will be ruined.

  47. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.

  48. And both are preserved.

  49. And no one having drunk old wine immediately desires new.

  50. For he says, the old is better.

  51. Let's pray.

  52. Lord, thank you for your word that it is alive and it's powerful, Lord.

  53. And yet our understanding is so limited because of our own limitations as humans, Lord.

  54. So I pray that you would open our understanding as we look at your word.

  55. That it would go out and that it would bear fruit, Lord.

  56. That it would find its place falling on that good ground, Lord, that yields a bumper crop, Lord.

  57. And I pray that that would be our hearts today as we look at your word in Jesus' name.

  58. Amen.

  59. So he starts off there.

  60. He says, immediately after these things.

  61. What things?

  62. The strange things that the people had seen, right?

  63. Remember that in verse 26 where it says, we have seen strange things today.

  64. Strange things.

  65. A guy being healed, taking up his mat and walking home and rejoicing in the Lord.

  66. The healing of this guy was immediate and the people glorified God.

  67. But even more than receiving healing, the man experienced forgiveness and the start of a whole new life.

  68. Our Lord's miracles not only demonstrated his deity and his compassion for needy people,

  69. but they also revealed important spiritual lessons about salvation.

  70. They were object lessons to teach spiritually blind people what God could do for them if only they would believe in his son.

  71. And that was the team here.

  72. That was their whole ploy for going down and ministering to these people and just walking beside them,

  73. feeding them a meal and ministering the truth of who Jesus is.

  74. And when a life's changed and you get to be a part of that,

  75. and to hear the joy in these guys' heart of watching people get changed just because you're willing to step out and be there.

  76. I'm telling you, over the years, the things I've experienced in my life,

  77. there's no greater joy than to see somebody come to Jesus.

  78. To see a man's countenance change like they got to see.

  79. And no doubt this man who was healed, everything about him changed.

  80. His body, the health of his body, no doubt the joy in his heart, the despair was gone.

  81. That's what Jesus offers.

  82. And no form of opulence can bring that to you and me.

  83. Only a rich faith.

  84. And so, Jesus is calling here in these 13 verses.

  85. First of all, he calls Levi.

  86. Notice it says there, and he says,

  87. That's pretty simple, ain't it?

  88. Just follow me.

  89. No further instructions.

  90. Now, you have to realize that this Levi character was a little bit different than the fisherman.

  91. Right?

  92. This is a very prosperous occupation he's involved in here with collecting taxes for Rome.

  93. His name's Levi, which is interesting.

  94. Most believe that he probably was named Levi because he was from the tribe of Levi.

  95. And the Levites were called to be ministers and priests.

  96. And here, this guy, he chose the most vile lifestyle by becoming a tax collector.

  97. And everybody hated him.

  98. And I'm sure you love and invite in for cookies and brief chat the IRS agent that comes to your house and wants to come in and do an audit.

  99. Oh, sure.

  100. Come on in.

  101. No.

  102. I mean, we're Idahoans.

  103. We might meet them with some gunpowder.

  104. They were so despised, these tax collectors.

  105. And so, but notice what he does.

  106. Jesus gives him a simple instruction.

  107. Follow me.

  108. And he left all, rose up and followed him.

  109. Left a very lucrative job.

  110. These guys is there.

  111. I was talking to both of them.

  112. And I actually last night ran into another one of the guys that were on the team that went down to Mexico.

  113. And they were just talking about prosperity.

  114. And prosperity can be a curse.

  115. Probably more times than not.

  116. And we're a very prosperous society here in America.

  117. And I remember years ago when I went to Africa and all the people wanted to come to America.

  118. Because why?

  119. Because we're prosperous.

  120. They don't have to worry about being hungry.

  121. They don't have to worry about where they're going to lay their head if they come to America.

  122. But the truth is, is that what they lack monetarily, they make up for in faith.

  123. And being rich in faith is the best end game.

  124. Right?

  125. Years ago, I remember seeing the bumper snicker.

  126. Some of you have seen it.

  127. Right?

  128. He who dies with the most toys wins.

  129. And then a Christian made a bumper sticker that was kind of a rebuttal to it.

  130. It said,

  131. He who dies with the most toys wins nothing.

  132. Because you've never seen a hearse with a U-Haul behind it.

  133. Right?

  134. Job had it right.

  135. I came into this world naked.

  136. And I'm going out naked.

  137. And

  138. Pastor Steve's going to teach on 2 Corinthians chapter 5 this week.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  139. And it is about being clothed with the robe of righteousness.

  140. That we wouldn't be found naked before the Lord when we stand before Him.

  141. But that we would be clothed with the robe of righteousness that we receive from the Lord Jesus.

  142. Jesus.

  143. And so this guy, just by faith, just left this job.

  144. Now this was a job that he couldn't go back to.

  145. Now we know the fishermen.

  146. Well, you can go fishing anytime.

  147. You can go back to that job.

  148. In fact, Peter, after Jesus, right,

  149. after Jesus is crucified, he said,

  150. that's it, I'm going fishing.

  151. Right?

  152. And he went fishing.

  153. And so they could go back to that.

  154. But this Levi,

  155. who, by the way,

  156. is the apostle Matthew.

  157. Matthew the apostle is this Levi person.

  158. Matthew means God's gift.

  159. And the Lord showed his grace on this Matthew by calling him to himself.

  160. And that's what Jesus does to you and I, first and foremost.

  161. When the Lord calls you, right?

  162. God doesn't necessarily, when he first calls you,

  163. he doesn't call you into a ministry.

  164. Okay?

  165. God doesn't do.

  166. That's not how he works.

  167. He calls you to himself first.

  168. Notice what Jesus say.

  169. Follow me.

  170. Follow me.

  171. He doesn't call you to some ministry.

  172. Because that,

  173. so many people think that their ministry is their relationship with God.

  174. Your ministry,

  175. the ministry God gives you is not your relationship with God.

  176. It's a byproduct of your relationship with God.

  177. That happens when you enter into relationship with Jesus

  178. and you,

  179. you nurture that relationship and you chase after him

  180. and he grows you.

  181. And then he gets you ready.

  182. It's kind of like two a days,

  183. right?

  184. Got to get ready.

  185. You're not going to go play a game first,

  186. first day of a volleyball season or football season,

  187. right?

  188. You're going to go do two days.

  189. You're going to run your hind end off.

  190. You can get some training in.

  191. You're going to learn some things.

  192. You're going to condition your body for what's ahead.

  193. And that's,

  194. that's the way it is,

  195. right?

  196. When Jesus calls us,

  197. he calls us to himself first.

  198. He tells you,

  199. he tells me,

  200. Hey,

  201. follow me,

  202. follow me.

  203. And,

  204. I remember having,

  205. well,

  206. let me back up here.

  207. Five things,

  208. five things that the,

  209. the believer who chooses to follow Christ needs.

  210. Number one,

  211. you need to be in the word.

  212. Number two,

  213. you need to be in prayer.

  214. Um,

  215. number three,

  216. fellowship.

  217. Number four,

  218. worship,

  219. right?

  220. You need to worship.

  221. The Lord can say,

  222. well,

  223. I don't,

  224. I don't like that singing stuff.

  225. Well,

  226. you need to get alone and worship the Lord.

  227. I don't know how you do that.

  228. It says,

  229. make a joyful noise.

  230. If you grunt,

  231. maybe you don't want to sing,

  232. just grunt to the Lord.

  233. I don't know what that is,

  234. but you need to worship.

  235. And then,

  236. and then service.

  237. But service is the last thing.

  238. It's not the first thing.

  239. So,

  240. I remember I had started a church.

  241. So the first,

  242. first four things,

  243. I always get ahead of myself.

  244. I had too much coffee this morning.

  245. Uh,

  246. the first four is just getting close to Jesus,

  247. right?

  248. You're in the word,

  249. you're in prayer,

  250. you're in fellowship and worship.

  251. Those are just getting close to Jesus.

  252. Jesus has called you to himself,

  253. get close to him,

  254. be in the word.

  255. I remember committing as a 27 year old.

  256. I was 27.

  257. Connie and I had been married for a couple of years.

  258. I committed to reading through the Bible.

  259. Lord,

  260. I got to read through this book.

  261. I'd been walking with the Lord for two or three years,

  262. four years,

  263. maybe at this time.

  264. And I remember,

  265. remember making that commandment.

  266. I got to read this Bible.

  267. From Genesis to Revelation,

  268. I need to know what people are talking about,

  269. especially my,

  270. my dad and my grandpa and my brother.

  271. They would have these conversations about people in the old Testament that I'd never heard of.

  272. Who?

  273. What?

  274. And,

  275. uh,

  276. never heard some of these things.

  277. And so I was provoked.

  278. I was prodded by the Holy Spirit to put God's word in my heart.

  279. And the more of the word that you put in your heart,

  280. the more these other things follow.

  281. The more of God's word that's in my heart,

  282. the more I want to pray,

  283. the more I want to worship,

  284. the more I want to fellowship.

  285. and,

  286. and share God's word with one another.

  287. And so I'm,

  288. I'm,

  289. I started this church in the Burley Rupert area.

  290. And we went there for a year.

  291. I remember my wife telling me she was pregnant with our youngest.

  292. And she says,

  293. Scotty,

  294. we're not ready for this.

  295. And I'm going,

  296. no,

  297. come on,

  298. let's go.

  299. Let's sell everything.

  300. Move to Cashew County.

  301. Okay.

  302. Minidoka.

  303. I mean,

  304. maybe have to flip a coin.

  305. I don't know which one's worse.

  306. But,

  307. so we went there and we were there for a year.

  308. And the second to the last service I did there,

  309. I mean,

  310. we,

  311. we were kind of growing along.

  312. We were meeting in a little grange and,

  313. and we were growing along and,

  314. and our son was born.

  315. And so now we have four kids and we're dragging them over there every weekend and every Sunday.

  316. And,

  317. and,

  318. and I was also doing rodeo Bible camps and I had a job and I was riding coats on the side.

  319. I mean,

  320. I was a busy boy and trying to make a living and all that stuff.

  321. and,

  322. and we had to have a rodeo Bible camp and I had this guest speaker.

  323. He was an old buckaroo from Nevada that used to travel with Franklin Graham.

  324. And I asked him,

  325. I said,

  326. Hey,

  327. last day of rodeo Bible camp,

  328. would you come over and share at the little church we're doing in the Burley Rupert area?

  329. He goes,

  330. yeah,

  331. sure.

  332. Scotty.

  333. Oh,

  334. come on.

  335. He'd talk like this,

  336. you know,

  337. he'd get up there and say,

  338. how many of you are glad you're not dead or in prison?

  339. And he had this preaching finger that was crooked.

  340. Arthritis had set in,

  341. right?

  342. Cause that's where I'd be if it wasn't for you.

  343. He was just a,

  344. he's an incredible guy.

  345. Still call him occasionally.

  346. He's just waiting around for Jesus to come or,

  347. or for him to take his last breath,

  348. but he still loves the Lord.

  349. And,

  350. and I remember him,

  351. he preached that day and I was sitting in the front row,

  352. the very front row.

  353. And he looked at me and he said,

  354. Scotty Brown,

  355. he said,

  356. Jesus has called you to himself first.

  357. And it like rocked my world.

  358. It's like,

  359. Oh,

  360. Oh,

  361. I was thinking this church thing is really my identity.

  362. He says,

  363. no,

  364. Jesus has called you to himself first.

  365. And,

  366. uh,

  367. I was just thinking,

  368. no,

  369. this is,

  370. this is,

  371. this is,

  372. uh,

  373. this is who I'm going to be as a Christian is a,

  374. is starting this little church in the Minicazia area.

  375. About two or three weeks later,

  376. I shut it down.

  377. And,

  378. uh,

  379. and as we're driving away from the last time,

  380. I remember the Lord whistling to my heart,

  381. dude,

  382. you got a ministry,

  383. right?

  384. Number one,

  385. you got to minister to your own heart.

  386. You got to take care of this.

  387. Keep it right with me.

  388. And when you keep it right with me,

  389. ministry is going to happen.

  390. It's just going to happen.

  391. And,

  392. and,

  393. um,

  394. you got a wife and you got kids,

  395. you know,

  396. put your focus there.

  397. What are you doing?

  398. Starting a church.

  399. Your wife was right.

  400. You're not ready for this.

  401. And I wasn't.

  402. And,

  403. um,

  404. so my job,

  405. they called me,

  406. uh,

  407. the chaplain,

  408. right?

  409. At my job.

  410. I was an equipment operator,

  411. worked with a bunch of dirt guys,

  412. dirt bags,

  413. same thing.

  414. Equipment operators,

  415. right?

  416. They're all,

  417. they're all,

  418. uh,

  419. a little flowery.

  420. And,

  421. uh,

  422. and you got a ministry there.

  423. Oh,

  424. wow.

  425. I didn't know much,

  426. but the Lord began to teach me.

  427. And,

  428. and there was this,

  429. this sequence that happens in,

  430. in the life of a believer.

  431. And it,

  432. it was a commitment to,

  433. to seeking the Lord's word.

  434. And,

  435. and,

  436. um,

  437. and so,

  438. um,

  439. you know,

  440. if you feel like the Lord has a calling on your life,

  441. then just,

  442. just chase after Jesus.

  443. Right?

  444. I get people coming to me all the time.

  445. Man,

  446. I got a calling on my life and,

  447. but their life's a mess.

  448. Right?

  449. I,

  450. I really want to minister to this people group.

  451. This is a people group that I'm,

  452. I'm really connected to.

  453. Yeah,

  454. but you're shacked up with your girlfriend.

  455. You got a drinking problem.

  456. Right?

  457. You're not ready for this.

  458. Right?

  459. God,

  460. God's got to kind of clean things up so that you can actually be fruitful.

  461. Lest you cause people to stumble.

  462. And,

  463. and that happens so often.

  464. I love,

  465. I love the zeal.

  466. Cause I know I had the same zeal on my heart.

  467. Praise the Lord.

  468. I,

  469. uh,

  470. wasn't smart enough to really,

  471. uh,

  472. get in too big of trouble.

  473. And the Lord was faithful to shut me down when I was going in the wrong direction.

  474. But just grow,

  475. grow in the grace and the knowledge of the Lord.

  476. You have this sense that God's has a,

  477. has a,

  478. has a calling on your life and he's going to begin opening doors.

  479. My wife and I,

  480. we were rodeo and we were doing ministry and the rodeo thing.

  481. And I got introduced to the rodeo Bible camp in 1991.

  482. And I was overwhelmed.

  483. I'm going,

  484. Oh my gosh,

  485. I got to do this.

  486. By then I was ready.

  487. And God began to open doors.

  488. And so we began to do these things and,

  489. and do,

  490. do the cowboy ministry stuff.

  491. And,

  492. um,

  493. and we were growing.

  494. Peter tells us in second Peter three 18,

  495. but grow in the grace.

  496. Listen,

  497. and the knowledge of our Lord and savior,

  498. Jesus Christ to him,

  499. be glory both now and forever.

  500. Amen.

  501. You grow in the grace and the knowledge of the Lord.

  502. And then when God begins to bless what you're doing,

  503. you have enough maturity to realize this.

  504. It's not you.

  505. It's him.

  506. And he gets all the glory.

  507. Because he won't share his glory with anybody.

  508. So if you or I try to tap into the glory of God,

  509. we're foolish.

  510. Because it's his.

  511. And it's not to be touched.

  512. So Billy Graham used to say,

  513. right?

  514. Don't touch the glory,

  515. the money,

  516. or the girls.

  517. Those three stay away from.

  518. And that's why we need to grow.

  519. Then,

  520. then as we,

  521. as God grows us up,

  522. then we're ready to minister.

  523. So Levi is so excited that he meets this Jesus,

  524. and he's chosen to follow Jesus,

  525. that he throws him a party.

  526. Right?

  527. He throws,

  528. he throws a party.

  529. And the religious people

  530. can't get their head around

  531. about what Jesus is doing.

  532. Let's just read those first few verses again.

  533. And after these things,

  534. he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi,

  535. told him to follow him.

  536. Verse 28,

  537. so he left all,

  538. rose up,

  539. and followed him.

  540. And then Levi gave him a great feast

  541. in his own house.

  542. Probably a very,

  543. very nice home.

  544. And there were a great number of tax collectors

  545. and others who sat down with him.

  546. And their scribes and their Pharisees

  547. complained against his disciples,

  548. saying,

  549. why do you eat and drink

  550. with tax collectors and sinners?

  551. Right?

  552. Here's some believers in God

  553. who've separated themselves from the world.

  554. And actually that they see themselves

  555. better than the world,

  556. should I put it that way.

  557. You know,

  558. people like that.

  559. They think they're better than you.

  560. Or,

  561. or you and me.

  562. I'm,

  563. I'm shocked

  564. at my hypocrisy

  565. as I drive down the street

  566. and I'll see people

  567. and think,

  568. well,

  569. that dude's a scumbum.

  570. Right?

  571. And the Lord convicts me

  572. and goes,

  573. hello,

  574. scumbums.

  575. Aren't all of you scumbums?

  576. and he always puts me in my place.

  577. And he always puts me in my place.

  578. The religious people can't get their head around

  579. about what Jesus is doing.

  580. Here's this rabbi.

  581. They've seen him do incredible things

  582. and they know that,

  583. that,

  584. uh,

  585. there's something different about him.

  586. And in verse 30,

  587. the scribes and the Pharisees

  588. were quick to diagnose

  589. the needs of others,

  590. but they were blind

  591. to their own needs

  592. for they were sinners

  593. like everyone else.

  594. And Jesus,

  595. Jesus nails it

  596. in the next two verses

  597. in 31 and 32.

  598. Right?

  599. be careful

  600. when you look down your nose

  601. at people.

  602. In fact,

  603. don't.

  604. Because you're no better

  605. than anyone else.

  606. None of us are.

  607. Now,

  608. we're better off

  609. if we know Jesus,

  610. but we're not better

  611. than anyone.

  612. And God has been

  613. so gracious to us,

  614. uh,

  615. we should be excited

  616. to go and share,

  617. uh,

  618. like the team here

  619. did in Mexico

  620. with those who

  621. don't know the Lord

  622. or,

  623. or maybe just lost

  624. and,

  625. and,

  626. and a mess.

  627. And I can't remember

  628. if I told you about the,

  629. the,

  630. the fellow that I

  631. saw on the bike

  632. the other day,

  633. but just,

  634. it absolutely over,

  635. no doubt he was homeless,

  636. but it just overwhelmed me

  637. for several days thinking,

  638. how dare I?

  639. Think of him that way.

  640. This is a soul

  641. that God loves.

  642. And Jesus died for.

  643. And I need to have

  644. that same compassion.

  645. And these,

  646. these Pharisees

  647. are looking down

  648. their nose

  649. at the people

  650. that,

  651. that Jesus is hanging with.

  652. They,

  653. they're,

  654. they were the

  655. dregs of society,

  656. these tax collectors

  657. and,

  658. and sinners.

  659. And Jesus answered

  660. and said to them,

  661. those who are well

  662. have no need

  663. of a physician.

  664. but those who are sick.

  665. I have not come

  666. to call the righteous,

  667. but sinners to repentance.

  668. Really,

  669. it was kind of

  670. a slap in the face

  671. if you think about it.

  672. Jesus said,

  673. I didn't come

  674. to call you.

  675. I didn't come

  676. to call the righteous.

  677. You think you're righteous.

  678. They didn't know

  679. how wicked they were.

  680. Self-righteousness

  681. is such a stench

  682. in the nostrils

  683. of the Lord.

  684. He despises it.

  685. In fact,

  686. Jesus throughout

  687. His ministry

  688. will see,

  689. He will be harder

  690. on the scribes

  691. and the Pharisees

  692. than anyone.

  693. Harder than a murderers,

  694. harder on them

  695. than adulterers.

  696. He lambates them

  697. because they're not

  698. getting it.

  699. They're so blind.

  700. They're not seeing

  701. their own wickedness.

  702. I haven't.

  703. The sick need a physician.

  704. Are you sick?

  705. I'm sick.

  706. I'm sick.

  707. In fact,

  708. I told a lawyer

  709. this week

  710. in a deposition

  711. I'm a liar

  712. and a deceiver.

  713. He looked at me.

  714. That's your testimony?

  715. Yep.

  716. If the shoe fits,

  717. you gotta wear it.

  718. It's just a knowledge,

  719. right,

  720. of the Word of God.

  721. How God sees humanity

  722. depraved and lost

  723. until we're redeemed.

  724. And then there is

  725. this walk of humility

  726. that needs to take place

  727. to those who believe

  728. and those who,

  729. especially those

  730. who are called

  731. to follow Jesus.

  732. Now,

  733. the scribes

  734. and the Pharisees,

  735. they're struggling.

  736. These people

  737. are having a good time.

  738. Right?

  739. It's a party.

  740. There's joy.

  741. How dare you have joy?

  742. You should suck

  743. on green persimmons

  744. like me

  745. and look like

  746. you're about ready

  747. to mess your pants.

  748. Right?

  749. No,

  750. we're to have joy,

  751. folks.

  752. This walking with Jesus

  753. is a joyful thing.

  754. Is it hard?

  755. Well, sure,

  756. it's hard.

  757. And if you get serious

  758. about it,

  759. it's one of the hardest

  760. things you'll ever do

  761. in your life.

  762. But is it worth it?

  763. Yes.

  764. Does it end well?

  765. Yes.

  766. It's a good thing.

  767. It's a glorious thing

  768. and they don't get it.

  769. Right?

  770. They're struggling

  771. with the joy,

  772. the obvious joy

  773. that this party

  774. is bringing.

  775. Right?

  776. And I don't know

  777. about you,

  778. but I know

  779. my joy is full.

  780. And the Bible says

  781. the joy of the Lord

  782. is our strength.

  783. So,

  784. Jesus was into

  785. the joy thing.

  786. He wasn't a sourpuss.

  787. John 15,

  788. 11,

  789. these things

  790. I've spoken to you

  791. that my joy

  792. may remain in you

  793. and that your joy

  794. may be full.

  795. Jesus lets them know,

  796. listen,

  797. I've come to

  798. heal and forgive,

  799. to heal the sick,

  800. to call the sinner.

  801. You remember

  802. when we get there,

  803. it's,

  804. we've got quite a bit

  805. of time before we get there,

  806. but I love that passage

  807. there in Luke 18

  808. when Jesus says,

  809. hey,

  810. men ought to pray

  811. always

  812. and not lose heart.

  813. And then he tells

  814. the scenario

  815. of the Pharisee

  816. and the publican

  817. or the tax collector,

  818. the sinner,

  819. that goes

  820. and they both pray

  821. to God

  822. and he profiles

  823. their prayer.

  824. And the Pharisees,

  825. just like these guys,

  826. what,

  827. how disgusting,

  828. such disgusting tax collector.

  829. Lord,

  830. I thank you,

  831. I'm not like this man,

  832. I fast twice a week,

  833. pay my tithe,

  834. make long prayers.

  835. And the other dude,

  836. you know,

  837. does the whole chest thing.

  838. Oh God,

  839. forgive me,

  840. a sinner.

  841. And Jesus said,

  842. that man,

  843. unlike the other one,

  844. went away justified.

  845. Right?

  846. He knew what he was.

  847. These people had lost sight.

  848. Right?

  849. They,

  850. their,

  851. their religion had deceived them.

  852. And so,

  853. it's the contrast

  854. between a physical sin

  855. or an outward sin

  856. like,

  857. like adultery

  858. or,

  859. or thievery,

  860. which tax collectors

  861. were accused of

  862. from skimming off the top

  863. because they worked for Rome.

  864. And,

  865. there's quite a contrast

  866. between that

  867. visible sinfulness

  868. and sinfulness

  869. of the heart

  870. or that hidden one.

  871. Oh,

  872. on the outside,

  873. they look like

  874. they got it all together.

  875. We live in a culture

  876. like that around here.

  877. Got to look like

  878. you got it all together.

  879. Cut your hair this way,

  880. wear these kind of clothes,

  881. good to go.

  882. Much like the two prodigals,

  883. right?

  884. The one,

  885. you remember him?

  886. I resembled the younger one.

  887. And he went away

  888. and he squandered his sustenance

  889. with riotous living.

  890. Did we have any riotous livers?

  891. Yeah,

  892. around here?

  893. I lived riotously.

  894. But when you look at that story,

  895. when the boy finally

  896. eats with the hogs

  897. and realized,

  898. no,

  899. I got to go home.

  900. At least my dad

  901. feeds his servants bread.

  902. I'll just go be a servant

  903. to my father.

  904. And the older son,

  905. he's the real prodigal

  906. because he covered it up.

  907. He who covers his sin

  908. will not prosper,

  909. the scripture says.

  910. And so just be open

  911. and out there with it.

  912. And let the chips fall.

  913. When you got nothing to hide

  914. and you can tell the truth

  915. about yourself,

  916. it's a really good thing.

  917. In fact,

  918. you don't have to have

  919. a very good memory

  920. if you tell the truth.

  921. If you're a liar,

  922. you got to have

  923. a really good memory.

  924. Let's see,

  925. which one did I tell that time?

  926. Yeah.

  927. So,

  928. Jesus lets them know,

  929. listen,

  930. I came to heal,

  931. right?

  932. I have not come

  933. to call the righteous

  934. but sinners to repentance

  935. because there are none righteous.

  936. Right?

  937. The scripture teaches that.

  938. Old and New Testament,

  939. right?

  940. There is none righteous.

  941. No,

  942. not one.

  943. And so they shift gears here

  944. in the next verses there

  945. in verse 33 through 35.

  946. It says,

  947. then they said to him,

  948. why did the disciples of,

  949. did the disciples of John

  950. fast often

  951. and make prayers

  952. and likewise

  953. those of the Pharisees

  954. but yours eat and drink?

  955. They're,

  956. now they're contrasting,

  957. comparing.

  958. Well,

  959. how come

  960. John's disciples fasted?

  961. You know,

  962. we fast.

  963. John's disciples fasted.

  964. They're closer to being like us

  965. than you guys are.

  966. You don't even fast.

  967. You just party on,

  968. dude.

  969. And Jesus said,

  970. can you make the friends

  971. of the bridegroom fast

  972. while the bridegroom

  973. is with them?

  974. But the days will come

  975. when the bridegroom

  976. will be taken away

  977. from them.

  978. Then they will fast

  979. in those days.

  980. You know,

  981. there's not a command

  982. to fast in the New Testament.

  983. Some of you go,

  984. well,

  985. why do we do it here then?

  986. because it is

  987. a spiritual discipline,

  988. right?

  989. But it's not a command.

  990. There was only one day

  991. that they commanded a fast

  992. in the Old Testament

  993. and that was on the day

  994. of Yom Kippur,

  995. the day of atonement,

  996. that you're to afflict

  997. your souls.

  998. Remembering the sacrifice

  999. that was made for you

  1000. and atoned for you.

  1001. That's the only time.

  1002. And so,

  1003. it was

  1004. not a

  1005. New Testament command.

  1006. It was only that

  1007. Old Testament command

  1008. on one day.

  1009. But Jesus says,

  1010. when the bridegroom

1011. liking it to a wedding,

  1012. well,

  1013. that's party time,

  1014. right?

1015. Who likes to go to weddings?

1016. I like to go to weddings,

  1017. right?

  1018. They're fun.

  1019. Girls really like

  1020. to go to weddings.

1021. more so than most guys.

  1022. But a Jewish wedding

  1023. lasted a week

  1024. and were times

  1025. of great joy

  1026. and celebration.

  1027. It's interesting

  1028. that the feast

  1029. had seven blessings.

  1030. The feast

  1031. of the wedding

  1032. had seven blessings.

  1033. It's funny.

  1034. The first one

  1035. was,

  1036. this was a blessing.

  1037. Blessed are you,

  1038. Lord our God,

  1039. ruler of the universe,

  1040. who creates

1041. the fruit of the vine.

  1042. Yeehaw!

  1043. Right?

  1044. And it speaks

  1045. of joy

  1046. that this is

  1047. a celebration time.

  1048. Wine throughout Scripture

1049. is a type of joy.

  1050. Not that

  1051. that gives you

  1052. the license

  1053. to go get tipsy,

  1054. right?

  1055. And have

  1056. a few too many.

  1057. But,

  1058. but it's a type

  1059. of joy

  1060. wine is.

  1061. And,

  1062. and he doesn't

  1063. stop here

  1064. with that idea

  1065. of a wedding.

  1066. So by using

  1067. this image,

  1068. Jesus was saying

  1069. to his critics,

  1070. I came to

  1071. make life

  1072. like a wedding feast,

  1073. not a funeral.

  1074. Right?

  1075. It's not a funeral.

  1076. Now we have funerals,

  1077. we have our times

  1078. when we're,

  1079. we're as Christians,

  1080. where we're

1081. in a time of mourning

  1082. and when we've lost

  1083. loved ones

  1084. and,

  1085. and that's a legit

  1086. real thing.

  1087. but the Christian life

1088. is to be a joyful life.

  1089. We're not to be

  1090. those judgmental,

  1091. sour folks

  1092. that just rains

  1093. on everybody's parade.

  1094. And verse 35

  1095. says a lot

  1096. that there's actually,

  1097. actually a battle coming.

  1098. Jesus said,

  1099. listen,

  1100. the bridegroom

1101. is going to be taken away.

  1102. Jesus isn't going to

  1103. always be walking

  1104. with these guys.

  1105. Then they'll fast.

  1106. then they'll fast

  1107. because it's going

  1108. to get intense

  1109. and they'll get serious

  1110. about seeking the Lord

  1111. and being

  1112. on their knees

  1113. and on their faces.

  1114. And so,

  1115. and Jesus told us

  1116. when the one

  1117. demon-possessed man

  1118. where they couldn't

  1119. get the demon out,

  1120. they said,

1121. how does this do this?

  1122. And he said,

  1123. however,

  1124. this kind does not

  1125. come out

  1126. except by prayer

  1127. and fasting.

  1128. Right?

  1129. Speaking of the

  1130. spiritual battle,

  1131. that it's not

  1132. all just joy,

  1133. but it's a,

  1134. it's,

  1135. it's,

  1136. it's a,

  1137. it's a battleground.

  1138. Well,

1139. I'm going to wrap it up here.

1140. We're going to get ready

  1141. to do the baptisms,

  1142. but verse 36

  1143. through 38,

  1144. Jesus makes

  1145. a couple

  1146. comparisons

  1147. here in this parable

  1148. when he says,

  1149. and he spoke

  1150. a parable to them.

1151. no one puts a piece

  1152. from a new garment

  1153. on an old one.

  1154. Otherwise,

1155. the new makes a tear

  1156. and also the piece

  1157. that was taken

  1158. out of the new

1159. does not match the old

  1160. and no one puts

  1161. new wine

  1162. into old wineskins

1163. or else the new wine

  1164. will burst

  1165. the wineskins

  1166. and be spilled

  1167. and the wineskins

  1168. will be ruined.

  1169. But new wine

  1170. must be put

  1171. into new wineskins

  1172. and both

  1173. are preserved.

  1174. and no one

  1175. having drunk

  1176. old wine

  1177. immediately desires

  1178. new

  1179. for he says

  1180. the old is better

  1181. and that's true.

  1182. Wine connoisseurs,

1183. you get that old stuff,

  1184. it's pretty good.

  1185. But he's liking it.

  1186. He's liking

  1187. these two allegories

  1188. to the two covenants.

1189. The old piece of cloth

1190. with the new piece of cloth.

  1191. They just don't,

  1192. they're not compatible.

  1193. It doesn't work.

  1194. It always tears away.

  1195. You remember

  1196. the old knee patches

  1197. that you ironed on

1198. and had the sticky stuff

  1199. on the back?

  1200. Right?

  1201. My wife would,

  1202. or excuse me,

1203. my mom would wash my britches

  1204. and the only thing

  1205. would be left

  1206. was the patch.

  1207. And it just didn't,

  1208. didn't work.

  1209. And so he said

  1210. it pulls away

  1211. from the new.

  1212. And then the,

  1213. the,

  1214. so the,

  1215. the,

  1216. the covenants

  1217. are different

  1218. and they,

  1219. they're separated.

  1220. They don't,

  1221. they don't mesh

  1222. the covenants.

  1223. they're both good.

  1224. No doubt.

  1225. Right?

  1226. Cause he,

  1227. he says that there,

  1228. right?

  1229. That,

  1230. uh,

  1231. he says,

  1232. and the wineskins

  1233. will be ruined.

  1234. What,

  1235. what,

  1236. what,

  1237. the old wasn't

  1238. to be ruined.

  1239. It was to stay

  1240. in its place.

  1241. Right?

  1242. It was to stay

  1243. in its place

  1244. and don't mix

  1245. the wines

  1246. because if you put

  1247. that new wine

  1248. in there

  1249. and it begins

  1250. to ferment,

  1251. what's it do?

  1252. It just breaks it.

  1253. And that's kind

  1254. of what the,

  1255. the old covenant

  1256. is,

  1257. right?

  1258. The old covenant,

  1259. uh,

  1260. its contents

  1261. were good,

  1262. but it,

  1263. the only thing

  1264. it can do

  1265. is condemn

  1266. and judge.

  1267. And it was easily

  1268. broken.

  1269. The law's easily

  1270. broken.

  1271. We're all lawbreakers.

  1272. We've all broken

  1273. the law.

  1274. And so it

  1275. maintains its

  1276. place.

  1277. But the new

  1278. wineskins was

  1279. once different.

  1280. You put the wine

  1281. in there

  1282. and it was

  1283. new and fresh

  1284. and it,

  1285. and it,

  1286. it would expand

  1287. kind of like

  1288. breathing.

  1289. The new covenant

  1290. is a picture

  1291. of life.

  1292. The old covenant

  1293. is a picture

  1294. of death

  1295. and it had

  1296. life in it.

  1297. That,

  1298. that new wineskin

  1299. and,

  1300. and that wine

  1301. would be a picture

  1302. of the Lord

  1303. inside of us.

1304. The joy of the Lord

1305. and even in the law

  1306. because what

  1307. was the law

  1308. good for?

  1309. The Bible tells us

  1310. it was a schoolmaster.

  1311. Right?

  1312. It was a schoolmaster.

  1313. And so

  1314. Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1315. I'll close with this.

  1316. Verses 24 through 26.

  1317. It says,

  1318. therefore the law

  1319. was our schoolmaster

1320. to bring us to Christ

  1321. that we might be

  1322. justified by faith

  1323. but after that

  1324. faith is come,

  1325. we are no longer

  1326. under a schoolmaster

  1327. for we are all

  1328. the children of God

  1329. by faith

  1330. in Christ Jesus.

  1331. Right?

  1332. And so what's,

  1333. what's really cool

  1334. about this is,

  1335. is,

  1336. that law,

  1337. it has its place.

  1338. It can't save us.

1339. It can't make us righteous.

  1340. It's limited.

  1341. Hebrews tells us

  1342. it's obsolete.

  1343. It's obsolete.

  1344. There in Hebrews 8,

    Hebrews 8:13

  1345. verse 13,

  1346. it says,

  1347. a new covenant.

1348. He has made the first

  1349. obsolete.

  1350. Now,

  1351. what is coming,

  1352. becoming obsolete

  1353. is growing old

  1354. and is ready

  1355. to vanish away.

1356. But it won't vanish away

  1357. until after the great

  1358. white throne judgment

  1359. because that's what

  1360. God uses to judge

  1361. the unrighteous dead

  1362. and the unrighteous angels

  1363. and Satan himself,

  1364. that,

  1365. that

  1366. old

  1367. wineskin.

  1368. And so,

  1369. it's not to be

  1370. totally done away with,

  1371. but just embrace

  1372. the new one

  1373. and you'll have joy

  1374. forevermore.

  1375. Let's pray.

  1376. Father,

  1377. thank you.

1378. Thank you for this day.

  1379. Thank you for,

  1380. Lord,

  1381. giving us joy.

  1382. Lord,

1383. that we can have joy

1384. in the face of heartache.

  1385. We can have joy

  1386. even when we fail

1387. because of what you've done.

  1388. that your mercy

  1389. and your grace

1390. is part of that new wine

  1391. that gives us

  1392. and affords us

  1393. that relationship

  1394. with you

  1395. that is so beautiful.

  1396. And I just pray

  1397. for anyone today,

  1398. Lord,

  1399. who hasn't come

  1400. and tasted

1401. and seen how good you are.

  1402. Lord,

1403. that maybe in this message

  1404. that you're calling,

1405. just as you called Matthew

  1406. and said,

  1407. follow me.

  1408. And maybe you're knocking

  1409. on the door

  1410. of someone's heart today.

  1411. I just pray

1412. that they would come forward

  1413. and be prayed for

  1414. and know that

  1415. they can experience joy,

  1416. that you

  1417. replace the heaviness

  1418. of sorrow

  1419. and you replace

1420. the weight of the guilt

1421. that we all carry sometimes.

1422. And so we just thank you

1423. that you've paid that price

  1424. for us

  1425. and that you're

  1426. calling us,

  1427. you're preparing us

  1428. for a ministry.

  1429. Lord,

1430. it could be as simple

  1431. as just ministering

  1432. to one another,

  1433. a husband and wife

  1434. and a marriage,

  1435. Lord,

1436. or just the little ones

  1437. that you put

  1438. in their lives,

  1439. Lord.

1440. But you've called us all

1441. to be this fruitful vine

  1442. that bears fruit,

  1443. that when you come,

  1444. you'll find faith

  1445. on the earth.

  1446. In Jesus' name,

  1447. amen.

  1448. Hey, let's all stand

1449. and I'm going to ask

  1450. the prayer team

  1451. to come up

1452. and I'm going to close

  1453. with a song here.

  1454. And if you need

  1455. the prayer team

  1456. to pray for you,

1457. if you need to give

  1458. your heart to Jesus

  1459. and you're thinking,

1460. man, I want to get baptized.

1461. And if you want to get baptized

1462. and you got questions about it,

  1463. come up here.

1464. These guys will kind of

  1465. line you out.

1466. And then after this song,

  1467. we'll dismiss

  1468. and head kind of

  1469. towards the pool

  1470. and watch some people

  1471. follow the Lord

  1472. in baptism.

  1473. I'm hot now.

  1474. Well, at Valleygate

  1475. the other night,

1476. Jason Lance did this song

  1477. and I hadn't heard it.

  1478. It's a Zach Williams song,

  1479. but it's called

  1480. Face to Face.

  1481. Oh, I'm a traveler

  1482. Far from home

  1483. I get lost

  1484. I press on

  1485. Cause there's a mansion

  1486. And streets of gold

  1487. Where I belong

  1488. If there's a day

  1489. Coming soon

  1490. Where the old

  1491. Be made new

  1492. And heaven's glory

  1493. Shines like the morning

  1494. Before our eyes

  1495. When we all

  1496. See Jesus

  1497. When we all

  1498. See Jesus

  1499. Face to face

  1500. See Jesus

  1501. Face to face

  1502. Then we will sing

  1503. With angel voices

  1504. There will be

  1505. A great rejoicing

  1506. Holy, holy

  1507. Worthy

  1508. Worthy

  1509. Worthy

  1510. Worthy

  1511. Worthy

  1512. Is the Lamb

  1513. When we all

  1514. When we all

  1515. When we all

  1516. See Jesus

  1517. When we all

  1518. See Jesus

  1519. Face to face

  1520. God bless you guys

  1521. Have a great week

  1522. If you want to

  1523. Witness the baptism

1524. We'll be in the pool

  1525. When we all

  1526. See Jesus

  1527. When we all

  1528. See Jesus

1529. Face to face to face

  1530. When we all

  1531. See Jesus

  1532. Face to face

  1533. Face to face

  1534. you
