“Impossible Command” - Luke 6 - June 15th, 2025 - Pastor Scotty Brown

You know, I always get approached every morning before service, you know, what's your title?

And well, of course, it's Father's Day. Happy Father's Day.

Do we got any dads in the house?

Okay.

Yeah, whole bucket full. Yeah.

But so I didn't know what to entitle this.

I could throw in a Father thing, but the thing that's probably overwhelming is an impossible command.

And you think, you look at God's Word and you look at God's law.

And obviously, you don't have to look at the Ten Commandments very long to realize how terribly short we fall of God's glory.

And so Jesus, this last week, we looked at the woe, woe, woe, woe.

And we go from the woe to are you kidding me?

And so we're going to look at verses 27 through 36.

And I want you to hang on to your hat.

And I want you to prepare your heart because just looking at this this last week and studying through it,

it's it's kind of tipped me over a little bit.

And so would you pray with me?

Father, thank you for this word that is Lord is from you.

All the letters are in red and you speak truth to our hearts.

And Lord, it seems to be overwhelming and impossible for us fallen creatures to to fulfill what is what is written here, Lord.

But we know that with you and by your spirit, you're able to do things in us that we could never do in ourselves, Lord.

And so we pray for that as we as we look at this and that you would teach us by your spirit, Lord,

and also empower us by your spirit.

If we feel weak, if we feel incapable of doing what you've called us to do, Lord,

you you you tell us that you'll you'll enable us, Lord, that you'll you'll qualify the called,

not necessarily calling the qualified, Lord.

So we just thank you that you use the foolish things of the world.

So may we be your fool tonight in Jesus name today.

Amen.

And tonight.

So let's just read.

We'll read these these 10 verses from verse 27 to 36.

And it says, but I say to you.

Do what?

Yeah.

Chapter six.

Sorry.

Luke chapter six, verses 27 through 36.

But I say to you who hear love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you and pray for those who spitefully use you to him who strikes you on the one cheek.

Offer the other also.

And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.

Give to everyone who asks of you.

And and from him who takes away your goods, do not ask them back.

And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them to them likewise.

But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?

Or even for even sinners love those who love them.

And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?

For even sinners do the same.

And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you?

For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.

But love your enemies, do good and lend, hoping for nothing in return.

And your reward will be great.

And you will be sons of the Most High.

For he is kind to the unthankful and evil.

Therefore, be merciful just as your Father also is merciful.

And, you know, you say, well, really?

The first thing he says is to those, it says, but I say to you who hear.

You got to hear God's word, right?

And sometimes these words are so familiar to us, we don't really hear them, right?

We don't really let it sink in and really ruminate in our hearts and in our conscience and in our mind.

Because when I see this, I see, what?

But I hate my enemies.

I don't like them.

And Jesus is telling me here, you know what?

Sorry.

You know, I want to be like David.

You know, Psalm 58, which says, break their teeth in their mouth, O Lord.

And so, but are we one who hears?

Are we willing to hear?

This is those who will listen and shame on you if you don't.

Because this is really, it is a command.

And it does seem like a ridiculous, impossible command.

And, but enemies often stir up an anger and a hatred.

And I think that we see that's what's going on in the Middle East right now.

Because of hatred, because of the darkness of men's hearts.

That's why we see a pretty ferocious battle going on in Israel and in Iran.

And so, we definitely need to be praying.

Praying for the Israelites.

Praying for the Iranians.

That they would come to know Jesus.

That this is going to solve nothing spiritually for either country.

They need to repent and turn to the great God and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

That's what they need.

And that's what you and I need.

But it's interesting how easily we're angered by those who come against us or take from us or hurt us.

And our hatred causes us to forget our own sin.

When you're angry with somebody, you forget your own sin.

You forget all about it.

It's like, no, I'm justified in this.

No, you're not.

Nor am I.

The only one justified to punish sin is God himself.

Right?

He's justified in that.

Or the whole justice system that God put into place.

That's justified.

But the Lord tells us, vengeance is mine.

I will repay, says the Lord.

And, but I don't like that because I want to be the one who's paying that bill.

Right?

I'm the one that wants to get even.

I've often said, and I confuse people sometimes when I say this, but I often say that someone's sin against you can be your greatest sin.

It can become your greatest sin.

When somebody sins against you.

Because you harbor it.

You hang on to it.

You let it fester.

Turning to this oozy, pussy sore in your heart that you can't get past.

And it's all consuming.

And it becomes your greatest sin.

That's why Jesus says, if you do not forgive, you can't be forgiven.

And I've had people tell me, I will never forgive.

Really?

That's a pretty tough stance.

Because you, you're disqualifying yourself from the kingdom by doing that.

And, and all fruit of the flesh.

It just, it just, just, it's evident.

It just comes out.

Right?

Sometimes there's little triggers.

Maybe you hear a person's name that you're angry with.

Or, or maybe even a people group.

Galatians tells us what it looks like.

And it's, it's, it's, it's a stench.

It's ugly.

In Galatians 5, it says, now the works of the flesh are evident, which are adultery and fornication.

Cleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions.

Sounds like teenagers, don't it?

Dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like.

Of which I tell you beforehand, just as I told you in time past,

that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

The Lord is really calling us to call our hearts into account here.

With how we deal with those who hate us and, and don't like us.

And, and may have maybe hurt us.

And therefore caused us to hate them and not to like them.

So he says four things in verses 27 and 28.

First, he says, love, right?

Love, this is agapeo.

It's the, it's the noun, or the, excuse me, the verb form of agape.

It's wholehearted, unconditional devotion.

Really?

To my enemies?

You know?

That's what he said.

I didn't say it.

He said it.

Feelings and condition, you know, feelings, sentimental feelings.

Really?

But I don't feel anything for these people.

Years ago, I, I worked with a guy that I didn't really like.

He was kind of a greaser.

You know what I mean?

You know, he had long, greasy hair.

And he mocha-toked quite a bit.

And I was saved at this point.

And I'm, I walk into the break room one day, and I just met this guy.

And I'm thinking, oh, Lord, please don't ever let me have to work with that guy.

Oh, you know what's coming, don't you?

Very next day.

Him and I are in a transport, transporting equipment all day long.

And I thought, oh, my gosh, I'm going to backslide all over this guy's face.

So we get to talking, and I start sharing with him.

And come to find out he had grown up, knowing the Lord, knowing who the Lord is.

And he finally looked at me.

He says, Scotty, he says, don't you got to want it?

And I thought, yeah, you really do.

You got to want it.

You got to want Jesus.

But it was amazing to me how the Lord totally turned my heart.

And even now, when I think of him, his name's Chris Wynn.

He's from the Magic Valley down there.

When I think of Chris, I pray for him.

And just began, just, I just came to love the guy.

And I know that wasn't me.

But the Lord, you know, checked my little sour attitude, if you will, by, oh, so you don't

think you can like this guy?

Well, I'm going to just make you, you know, a little uncomfortable here and put you in

your place.

And he did.

And my love for him began to grow.

I actually had feelings for this guy.

I loved him.

And I wanted to see him come to know Jesus.

And so God can do that.

But you got to let him, right?

That was the only thing that I had going for him.

And I was willing to let God let me.

Because at the moment, I didn't feel like it at all.

Right?

But love goes beyond feelings, right?

Anybody married?

You ask my wife many times.

She feels like murdering me and collecting that life insurance policy.

Life would be so much easier without this bozo around.

But, so it goes beyond feeling.

Secondly, he says, do good.

And this is a, it means an honest goodness, not fake.

Do good.

Do good to my enemies.

Yes.

If they stumble, help them up.

If they break down, give them a pull.

If their donkey wanders astray, return him to the one that's your enemy.

I had this happen to me one time.

I was, well, I saw it displayed, actually.

And it was one of my hellion friends that had grown up as a Christian.

And we were up skiing.

And I was the youngest.

I was just between my eighth grade and freshman year.

And, and, or maybe it wasn't my freshman year because it was winter time.

And we were skiing.

And these guys had graduated high school.

And I was, and they were big, tough guys.

And so, I was kind of cocky.

And I go off this jump and crash.

I wasn't a very good skier.

I was really good at crashing.

And I crashed and I dug this big divot down below the jump.

And this one kid up above, you know, that was, he was still in high school.

He goes, hey, dopey, cover up your hole.

You calling me dopey?

And they were a lot bigger than me.

But my buddies said, hey, he's with us.

And, and so he kind of give him, give the kid a little tongue lash in, in, and humbled him.

And so, we're on our way home that night after the lifts closed.

And guess what?

About a mile down from the, from the ski hill, this dude's run off the road.

And I thought, good.

And my buddy, all of a sudden, he got this soft heart.

He's a great big guy.

He got this soft heart and he goes, no, we got to help him.

I said, really?

I said, yeah, we got to help him.

His dad was my elementary principal.

And boy, could that guy swing the paddle.

But they were a Christian family, just good people.

And though this kid was kind of right in his testimony, he knew what was right.

And he knew that we needed to stop and help this kid that had, you know, insulted me.

And sure enough, he did.

Showed him kindness.

I thought, wow, that's how you do this?

I don't know that I was impressed.

I was just kind of, you know, behooved that he would do that.

But that's what it's talking about here.

Just an honest goodness.

No, I'm going to help you.

I don't care what you did.

Isn't that what God does to us?

Hey, I'm offering you salvation here.

And you've sinned against me.

And I'm willing to let all that go.

You just come to me.

And the goodness of the Lord.

And that's what Jesus is teaching here.

That we're to be good.

It doesn't matter what people do to us.

Thirdly, he says, bless.

It's interesting.

This was a Greek word.

Well, I can't even say it.

Eulogio.

Which is where we get our word eulogy.

Right?

And eulogy, it literally means to speak well of.

We see that at funerals.

A lot of times people are lying at funerals.

But they try to speak well.

It reminds me of this story.

That I heard about the two brothers.

They were just, they were no good lying, cheating, thieving dogs.

They weren't.

One of them dies.

And so the pastor's getting ready to do the funeral.

And the brother comes up to him and says, I don't care what you say about my brother.

But you better let them people know that he was a good, upstanding, honest guy.

And the pastor was in a quandary.

He didn't know what to do.

So he gets up and he says, this man was a lying, thieving, womanizing, cheating, stealing dog.

But compared to his brother over here, he was an upstanding, good guy.

He says, bless those who curse you.

They're speaking ill of you, right?

That's what it means.

It means that we must speak well of those who speak ill of us.

William Barclay, a certain commentator, says this about this pastor.

He says, we cannot love our enemies as we love our nearest or dearest.

To do so would be unnatural, impossible, and he says, even wrong.

But we can see to it that no matter what a man does to us, even if he insults, ill treats, and injures us, we will seek nothing but his highest good.

That's so against our nature.

That's why people are going, how can you do this?

This is like it's impossible.

Fourthly, he says that we should pray.

Right?

He says, pray for those who spitefully use you.

And that's the key, is to pray.

When you pray for your enemy, something happens.

One commentator said, how should we treat our enemies?

We must love them, do good, bless them, fourthly, pray for them.

Hatred only breeds more hatred.

That's so true.

For man's anger does not produce the righteousness of God.

That's James 1.20.

It can't be done in our own strength.

It is impossible for us to do in our own strength.

But it can be done, however, through the Holy Spirit.

Right?

And if you finish, I read part of Galatians 5 there.

And if you go on down, when it talks about the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.

You know, long-suffering, brotherly kindness.

That's what comes from a person that is filled with God's Holy Spirit.

He goes on and he says, we must not look at these admonitions as a series of rules to obey.

They describe an attitude of heart that expresses itself positively when others are negative.

And generously when others are selfish.

All to the glory of God.

It is an inner disposition, not a legal duty.

It's just a...

It's who you become as the Spirit of God begins to mold and shape you into the image of Christ Jesus.

That's what happens.

And then we're able to do it.

Not in our own strength, but in His strength.

Praying for our enemies, you guys, keeps our heart right with God and with men.

It just keeps your heart right.

Keeps you in the right place.

You know, the old saying, right thinking leads to right living.

It's true.

But many say, impossible.

Yes.

But didn't Jesus come doing the impossible?

He healed the terminal.

He gave sight to the blind.

He raised the dead.

Conquering death itself.

Jesus came doing the impossible.

And He talks about it quite a bit.

In Matthew 17, His disciples got face to face with this dude that was demon possessed.

And they couldn't cast the demon out.

And so they questioned Jesus about it.

And Jesus said to them, because of your unbelief, for assuredly I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, move from here to there.

And it will move and nothing will be impossible for you.

So it's all predicated upon our yieldedness to the Holy Spirit.

Experience in salvation, being a child of God, born into the family, then God can fill you with His Spirit.

And do what He wants with you.

And give you the strength, the wherewithal, to do what Jesus instructs us to do here.

Do you have faith that God can help you love your enemies?

Because that's what He's saying here.

If you've got faith, then nothing will be impossible for you.

So many people say no, because they cut it off right there.

They say, I will never.

Don't say that.

Right?

Don't say that.

I've said that before in my life.

I would never do that.

Guess what I do?

Just what I said I would never do.

That's how weak we are.

Jesus talks to His disciples about the rich young ruler.

I mentioned it last week.

And how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.

And He said, surely I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

And again, I say to you that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

You know, and I talked about the woe to the rich.

And I talked about the woe to the rich, right?

Now, this is interesting.

This, this, these disciples see the world like most Americans.

They, they say, they say, and when His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished saying, who then can be saved?

Why?

Why?

Because you and I, we got a habit of chasing old George.

Don't we?

The more Georges we can get in our pocket, the better off we are, right?

The disciples realized that.

Who can be saved?

Right?

Isn't that why we go fishing every morning?

Trying to catch enough fish to get rich?

But Jesus looked at them and said to them, with men, this is impossible.

But with God, all things are possible.

But He said, it's hard.

Hard for a rich man.

Most of us in this room would qualify.

As years ago, I had a Mormon friend that told me, oh, that eye of the needle thing.

That's a, that's a, this, this little brick doorway in the Middle East that, you know, the only way camels can get through it is when they get on their knees and they can crawl through it.

It's hard, but they can do it.

Well, I thought, oh, wow.

Well, that makes that a little more, you know, palatable.

And then I looked at it in the Greek.

And the Greek where it says needle, it means sewing needle.

Right?

It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a sewing needle than for a rich man to get to heaven.

Whoa.

Whoa.

Whoa.

Whoa.

Whoa.

Whoa.

Whoa.

Whoa.

but with God

all things are possible

including loving your enemies

now as an old brawler

back in the day

fisticuffs was a

normal thing

I'm shocked now that

people that I get upset with I don't want to

beat their face in

and it's like Lord you're

you're pretty awesome

because left to myself

I'm a murderous self-centered

huh yeah I won't go there but you know

and so he doesn't stop there

but in verses 29 through 31

Jesus takes it to another level

to him who strikes you on the one cheek

offer the other also

and from him who takes away your cloak

do not withhold your tunic either

give to everyone who asks you

and from him who takes away your goods

do not ask them back

and just as you want men to do to you

you also do to them likewise

turn the other cheek

seriously

now I haven't been hit

I haven't I haven't had to try to practice that one

but I'm thinking

I think I'd fail that test

it's kind of like my friend

my old Baptist preacher friend said

yeah God told me to turn the other cheek

and when they hit that one

I have no further instructions

we're terrible

we are terribly wicked sinners

and

you know

is this generosity

generosity

or stupidity

Paul tells us in Romans chapter 12

Romans 12 · chapter mention

he says

beloved

do not avenge yourselves

but rather give place to wrath

for it is written

vengeance is mine

I will repay

says the Lord

therefore if your enemy is hungry

feed him

if he is thirsty

give him a drink

for in so doing

you will heap coals of fire

on his head

do not be overcome by evil

but overcome evil with good

overcome evil with good

and I don't think that

Paul is speaking tongue in cheek here

right

I don't think he's going

yeah you're just getting them

you're killing them with kindness

yeah

no

he's just

he just realized that vengeance

is the Lord's

and that when God calls us

to show this kindness

and this

this

ability to not retaliate

that God can bless that

and if this person doesn't turn

then coals of fire will be heaped upon his head

literally

and simply to be a witness

years ago when I was

I was young in the Lord

and I read a

read a book about a

KGB

officer in Russia

that had defected

to the US

and

they were persecuting

the underground church

there in Russia

at this time

and

and

they would go in

and break up Christian meetings

and he was beating

this old woman

and

she looked up at him

with blood running out of

all of her orifices

in her face

and she said

Jesus forgive him

he don't know what he's doing

and it was that

it was that act

that led him to Christ

and

he moved to Canada

defected from Russia

the Holy Spirit

got a hold of him

and it was powerful

what

she was a witness

she

she was living out

what Jesus instructed us here

and

and

it

it converted a soul

and so

it's our opportunity

what I believe

Paul's saying here

is to be a witness

to be a witness

and to

to be like Jesus

as he said there

at the cross

that they don't know

what they're doing

now

now we must have wisdom

right

I think there's

there's times

when we

discern certain things

I remember

when they

smote Jesus

there in

John 18

he spoke

he spoke

to the dude

and

he said

if

if what I've said

is wrong

then okay

but

if what I said

is good

then why

did you strike me

why did you hit me

and

he was simply

answering a question

of the high priest

Paul does the same thing

in Acts 16

when they're gonna come

let him out of

prison secretly

he said oh no

oh no

we ain't going there

they arrested me publicly

put me to shame

in front of everybody

they're gonna come publicly

and release me

and so

there's discernment

but for the most part

we are to turn the other cheek

and pray that God

would give us wisdom

as Paul did there

in Philippians chapter 1

Philippians 1 · chapter mention

where he says

this I pray

that your love may abound

still more and more

in knowledge

and in all discernment

that you may approve

the things that are excellent

that you may be sincere

and without offense

till the day of Christ

being filled with the fruits

of righteousness

which are by Jesus Christ

to the glory

and praise of God

and so yes

there's discernment

but

but think about this

I mean

he who steals

your coat

right

let him have your cloak

also

that'd be like some dude

coming stealing your stereo

out of your car

and you catch him

and he takes off running

and you go

wait a minute

you forgot the amplifier

fire in the speakers

it's just like

Lord

you got some work

to do in us

right

and then he says

and just as you want men

to do to you

you also do to them

likewise

now

years ago

and this was even

before Christ

in about 500 BC

Confucius comes along

with this same thought

but in the negative

and he was saying

whatever you don't want

people to do to you

don't do it to them

that's a negative

Jesus brings it

in the positive

right

where he says

and just as you want

men to do to you

you also do to them

like

well what do you want

men to do to you

I want them to bless me

I want them to be nice

to me

and kind to me

and take care of me

well

then what does that mean

you have to do

I gotta bless them

and be kind to them

and take care of them

that's what he's saying

that's in the positive

not in the negative

no don't do to people

that you don't want

no

do to people

what you want

done to you

it was

it was proactive

verses 32 through 36

as we close here

this morning

it says

but if you love

those who love you

what credit is that

to you

for even sinners

love those who love them

and if you do good

to those who do good

to you

what credit is that

to you

for even sinners

do the same

and if you lend

to those

from whom

you hope to receive

back

what credit

is that to you

Jesus is saying

you love people

who love you

so what

there's nothing cool

about that

you don't deserve

a pat on the back

for that

no you

you love somebody

that wants to

beat your face

in and cut

your head off

and you're nice

to them

that's what he's

talking about

for even sinners

lend

to sinners

to receive

as much

back

maybe with a little

interest

but love

your enemies

do good

and lend

hoping for

nothing in return

and your reward

will be great

and you

will be the sons

of the most high

for he

is kind

to the unthankful

and evil

therefore

be merciful

just as your father

also

is merciful

and he says

the sons

day

children

we need

to be

like our

father

in heaven

Jesus

was

well it

wasn't

that it

wasn't

that he

didn't get

fired up

he did

righteously

I might

add

mine is

righteously

it's

usually

selfish

proverbs

10

and really

folks we

are truly

living our

lives for

the audience

of one

it's only

one person

that matters

because the

day that you

take your

last breath

and you

stand all

by yourself

and I

stand all

by myself

before the

God of

heaven

I will

give an

account for

all this

stuff

and I

want to be

that wise

son

that he

did

the

awesome

powerful

word of

God

that

discerns

the

thoughts

and the

intents

of our

heart

and

I'm

looking

forward

to that

day

so I

need

to keep

learning

how to

turn that

of the

cheek

over

and over

and over

and over

again

just as

Jesus

told Peter

there

how many

times

should I

forgive

my

brother

seven

times

no doubt

he was

puffed up

and thinking

aren't I

generous

and Jesus

took the

wind out of

his sails

when he

said

not seven

times dude

seventy

times seven

now you're

starting to get

the picture

I

I

am excited

about that

day

but I

do walk

in fear

because I

know

sometimes

I'm not

that wise

son

and so

father we

just come

before you

right now

seeking your

face

Lord as

we

enter into

communion

we

remember

ourselves

and how

far

we fall

short of

your glory

and we

pray that

you would

change our

hearts

Lord

empower us

to live

these

out these

commandments

of

loving

and doing

good

and

and

blessing

and praying

for those

who we

know

don't

like us

and we

know that

they didn't

like you

so the

world's

not gonna

like us

help us

to be okay

with that

Lord Jesus

and help

us to

that you

would fan

that flame

of our

love

in these

day last

days

when the

love of

many

is

growing

cold

and so

Lord now

as we

have the

elements

in our

hand

and we

we

remember

your

body

that was

broken

displaying

your

great

love

for

us

and

you

forgave

those

who

tore

your

flesh

and

pierced

it

with

the

nails

Lord

and

the

spear

and

the

and

those

Judean

thorns

that went

on your

head

as a

crown

and you

forgave

and you

let it

go

and you

turn

the other

cheek

Lord

we

take

that

as a

as a

memory

but also

Lord

we

we desire

it as

your

people

to be

like

you

so thank

you for

that

sacrifice

Lord

help us

to be

willing

to lay

it down

just as

you did

for greater

love has

no one

than this

that he

would lay

down his

life for

his friends

Lord

and you

did it

for us

so we

hold this

bread

before you

Lord

we

thank

you

for

it

pray

that

you

would

bless

it

as

we

partake

and

remember

your

broken

body

for us

in Jesus

name

let's

partake

likewise

you

took

the

cup

and

you

told

him

Lord

that

this

is

my

blood

that

is

shed

for

you

Lord

that

it

truly

washes

us

clean

from

that

that

anger

and

that

hatred

that

can

so

just

stack

up

and

fester

up

in

our

hearts

Lord

would

you

remove

it

Lord

with

the

cleansing

power

of

your

precious

blood

as

remember

Lord

being

willing

to

be

poured

out

as

a

drink

offering

for

us

and

so

Lord

just

bless

this

cup

as

we

partake

and

we

remember

the

washing

that

took

place

and

may

it

wash

over

our

minds

and

hearts

Lord

as

we

remember

you

Lord

and

maybe

even

remember

some

of

those

who

we

would

consider
