  1. Psalm 110. This morning we're going to

  2. do part four of the series, the father's

  3. song to the son. That's what we have

  4. kind of titled Psalm 110.

  5. And we've been walking through it. This

  6. is the fourth sermon from just seven

  7. verses. We've been moving very slowly

  8. through the psalm. And we come now to

  9. verse 5 through verse 7 this morning.

  10. And these verses really tie everything

  11. that we've already talked about all

  12. together. And so I want to uh Thomas,

  13. can you put that other slide up there?

  14. Sorry, brother. Uh I want to walk

  15. through just review for us what we've

  16. already talked about and then show you

  17. where we're going today so you can see

  18. the whole psalm, all of Psalm 110

  19. together. And then we'll jump in and do

  20. some exposition from verse 5 through 7.

  21. And there's not a there's the the the

  22. depth of the psalm. We've already been

  23. there. The verse 5 through7 is really

  24. just putting the bow on top of it. And

  25. it's a beautiful beautiful few verses. I

  26. want you to see this slide. There's a

  27. lot going on, but there's a lot going on

  28. in Psalm 110. And so we've tried to put

  29. it all together in one one screen so

  30. that you can see it all at one time. We

  31. have seen the Messiah as the coming

  32. king. In verse 1 through3, we see Jesus,

  33. God the Father, speaking to his son,

  34. Jesus, and he is establishing Jesus

  35. Christ as coming king. He's seated at

  36. the right hand of God the Father. Uh he

  37. uh he will make his enemies his

  38. foottool. All of those phrases that uh

  39. show us the power and the strength and

  40. the authority of Jesus Christ. He is

  41. coming. He is king. One day his uh his

  42. uh his reign will be fully realized and

  43. established. It is established it will

  44. be fully realized in one day in the

  45. future. We've seen him as coming king in

  46. three ways which was our outline that we

  47. followed. We saw him in his person.

  48. Jesus is God. We saw it in his position.

  49. He's seated at the right hand of God the

  50. father. That is Jesus is sovereign. And

  51. then we see him as coming king through

  52. his power. Jesus is omnipotent. He has

  53. all strength. He has all power. So

  54. that's the first three verses of the

  55. psalm. And then last Sunday we looked at

  56. verse 4 which is the middle of the

  57. psalm. It falls right in the middle and

  58. we see the Messiah in verse four as

  59. present priest. So we have seen him as

  60. coming king at the beginning. Right in

  61. the middle he is present priest. This is

  62. where you and I live today. Jesus right

  63. now is seated at the right hand of God

  64. the father interceding on our behalf. He

  65. is functioning right now as our high

  66. priest. Hebrews tells us he is a better

  67. high priest than the Old Testament

  68. priesthood. And we talked much about

  69. that last week. And so we see him as

  70. present priest seen in his priesthood.

  71. Jesus is mediator.

  72. And now we come today to the final three

  73. verses 5 6 and 7. And we see the Messiah

  74. as conquering Christ.

  75. It's seen in his plan. What is his

  76. future plan? These verses are prophetic

  77. looking forward again.

  78. And what we find in these verses is that

  79. Jesus is victorious.

  80. He will be victorious. He is already

  81. victorious over death and hell and the

  82. grave and sin. And one day he will

  83. conquer all of his enemies. And so we

  84. come this morning to chapter 100. Psalm

  85. 110 verse number five. Let's read with

  86. this backdrop behind us. Let's read the

  87. whole psalm and look at all of it

  88. together and then we'll look at verse

  89. 5-7

  90. uh a little closer this morning. Verse

  91. one, the Lord, all caps, Yahweh, God,

  92. for sake of our understanding, we could

  93. say God the Father,

  94. the Lord said unto my Lord, only capital

  95. L, that's Adoni. That's the Hebrew word

  96. Adoni. That's master.

  97. And so

  98. we we'll see this later played out in

  99. the psalm, but we have already explained

  100. that Lord is God said unto my Lord, who

  101. is David is writing, who is David's

  102. Lord? That's Jesus Christ. So God

  103. speaking to Jesus the Messiah. Here's

  104. what he said. Sit thou at my right hand

  105. until I make thine enemies thy foottool.

  106. The Lord shall send the rod of thy

  107. strength out of Zion. Rule thou in the

  108. midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall

  109. be willing in the day of thy power in

  110. the beauties of holiness. From the womb

  111. of the morning, thou hast the dw of thy

  112. youth. The Lord hath sworn, and he will

  113. not repent. He's not going to change his

  114. mind. Thou art a priest. Who is a

  115. priest? Jesus Christ. We're still

  116. talking to Jesus. Thou art a priest

  117. forever after the order of Melkisedc.

  118. And then verse five, where we want to

  119. zoom in this morning. the Lord at thy

  120. right hand. Shall strike through kings

  121. in the day of his wrath. He shall judge

  122. among the heathen. He shall fill the

  123. places with dead with the dead bodies.

  124. He shall wound the heads over many

  125. countries. He shall drink of the brook

  126. in the way. Therefore shall he lift up

  127. the head. So these three verses may seem

  128. a little uh obscure at first, but I want

  129. us to look at them this morning. And we

  130. see in these three final three verses of

  131. Psalm 110, we see his plan. Jesus is

  132. seen as conquering king. The the one who

  133. is coming, the one who is right now

  134. ruling as a high priest is one day going

  135. to return.

  136. He is coming not as a baby the next time

  137. he comes, but he is coming as a

  138. conquering Christ. And we find in verse

  139. 5-7 a prophecy. And the prophecy is

  140. simply stated in these three words.

  141. Jesus is victorious.

  142. These final three verses of this

  143. powerful theological psalm show us three

  144. components of Christ's certain victory.

  145. Verse five, we see the warrior.

  146. Verse six, we see the wrath.

  147. And in verse seven, we see the worship.

  148. The warrior, the wrath, and the worship.

  149. Let's talk about those three things as

  150. they relate to these three verses this

  151. morning. And I I do not plan to preach

  152. long at all this morning. We're going to

  153. Florida today. I got to get on the road.

  154. Okay? So, I'm not going to preach long.

  155. So, just stay with me. We're going to

  156. walk through this and we'll go get some

  157. lunch. All right? I hope this encou I

  158. want to encourage you this morning.

  159. Okay? This should encourage you and

  160. that's my goal. So, let's look at verse

  161. 5. We see the warrior. Verse five is a

  162. summary of what will be given in

  163. slightly more detail. And I I believe in

  164. verse 6, what is coming in verse 6, the

  165. details of this great battle that we're

  166. going to see in verse 6, this wrath

  167. that's coming in verse 6, we kind of get

  168. a summary in verse 5. In fact, verse 5

  169. is kind of a summary of the entire

  170. psalm. Let me show it to you. We see

  171. who. Notice how it starts in verse 5. He

  172. said the Lord. Who are we talking about?

  173. We're still talking about Jesus. Notice

  174. that Lord is capital Lcase O R D. That's

  175. the Hebrew word adoni, the same one

  176. that's used for Jesus in verse number

  177. one. So, we're still talking about Jesus

  178. Christ. This reminds us of what we have

  179. already looked at in his person. We're

  180. reminded in verse 5, this summary, this

  181. overview. Let me remind you of who we're

  182. talking about. We're talking about Jesus

  183. Christ. So, we see who. And then notice

  184. we see where the psalmist is going to

  185. repeat what he has already stated

  186. earlier in the psalm. He said, "The Lord

  187. at thy right hand." So, we see who and

  188. we see where. We're reminded here of his

  189. position. His position of authority.

  190. He's seated at the right hand of God the

  191. Father right now. Jesus Christ is the

  192. person. That's who. Where is Jesus? He

  193. is right now at the right hand of God

  194. the Father. What is he going to do?

  195. Well, verse 5 continues, "The Lord who's

  196. at the right hand shall strike through

  197. kings in the day of his wrath." This

  198. reminds us from what we learned in verse

  199. two and three reminds us of his power.

  200. He's going to strike through the kings

  201. of the world. He He is powerful. Who so

  202. we we're reminded of his person and

  203. we're reminded of his position. And now

  204. we're reminded of his power that he has

  205. all of the all power and he has all

  206. authority and that Jesus is sovereign.

  207. All contained right here in verse 5. And

  208. then it even tells us when he's going to

  209. do it. We see who and where and what.

  210. And then notice when

  211. in the day of thy wrath,

  212. this is a preview of what we're getting

  213. ready to talk about more in verse six

  214. and 7.

  215. When is Jesus Christ going to to strike

  216. through the kings in the day of his

  217. wrath? This is an important note because

  218. the text is moving us through time.

  219. The psalm begins with the enemies as his

  220. foottool. That's prophetic.

  221. One day Jesus will rule and reign over

  222. all of his enemies. They will become his

  223. foottool. The psalm begins in a

  224. prophetic tone. But then in verse four,

  225. right in the middle of the psalm, it

  226. takes a present tone because Jesus is

  227. right now our high priest. Jesus is

  228. right now seated beside God the father

  229. making intercession for you and I in a

  230. the beautiful power. If you were not

  231. here last week, please go back and watch

  232. the the depth of verse number four and

  233. what it means to have a high priest in

  234. Jesus Christ. So we started with

  235. prophetic then we took a present tone

  236. and now in verse 5 6 and 7 we're going

  237. to once again return to a prophetic tone

  238. in the psalm. So it's important to stay

  239. focused on how the psalmist is writing.

  240. Now we're speaking future tense again.

  241. One day he will make his enemies his

  242. foottool. One day he will strike through

  243. his enemies in the day of his wrath. The

  244. psalm is all connected together. And

  245. here's what we're learning in these

  246. verses is that Jesus is a warrior.

  247. I love the sentiment of baby Jesus in

  248. the manger. I I love the the holiday

  249. Christmas and the the feel. Can we just

  250. say the feels of Christmas, right? You

  251. you get a feeling at Christmas time and

  252. it's it's beautiful. Everybody loves a

  253. baby, right? Until they dirty themselves

  254. and are screaming. Then nobody likes a

  255. baby. Where's this kid's mom at?

  256. Everybody loves a baby. I mean, we think

  257. baby Jesus, I mean, it's just it's cute

  258. and it's sweet and it's lovely. And I

  259. love the sentiment of baby Jesus. But I

  260. never want to get so focused on baby

  261. Jesus that we forget that Jesus Christ

  262. is a warrior.

  263. He's he he controls an army. He commands

  264. an army. And he is coming one day. He is

  265. coming back with his army as a warrior,

  266. not as a baby. Let me let me read some

  267. verses to you. Can I do that? You can

  268. write this down and check them out later

  269. for yourself. Revelation chapter 19,

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  270. beginning in verse number 11, and I'll

  271. read through verse 16. Revelation 19:1,

    Revelation 19:1

  272. John is writing. He said, "And I saw

  273. heaven opened, and behold, a white

  274. horse. And he that sat upon was called

  275. faithful and true, and in righteousness

  276. he doth judge and make war." Maybe Jesus

  277. making war. He is a warrior. Verse 12,

  278. his eyes. Get this picture. I want you

  279. to see Jesus on this white steed on this

  280. stallion standing in the open portals of

  281. heaven. Here's what he looks like. His

  282. eyes were as a flame of fire. And on his

  283. head were many crowns. And he had a name

  284. written that no man knew but he himself.

  285. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped

  286. in blood. And his name is called the

  287. Word of God. And the armies which were

  288. in heaven followed him upon white

  289. horses. That's us. Amen. Clothed in fine

  290. linen, white and clean. And out of his

  291. mouth, out of the mouth of Jesus, goeth

  292. a sharp sword, that with it he should

  293. smite the nations. And he shall rule

  294. them with a rod of iron. We've already

  295. talked about that. And he treadth the

  296. wine press of the fierceness of the

  297. wrath of Almighty God. and he hath on

  298. his vesture and on his thigh a name

  299. written, King of Kings and Lord of

  300. Lords. Jesus Christ is coming back.

  301. Psalm 110:5 is prophesying the day of

    Psalms 110:5

  302. his wrath. What day is that? It's the

  303. day described in Revelation 19 11-16

  304. when heaven opens up and you see King

  305. Jesus, warrior Jesus on his white horse

  306. getting ready to come out of heaven and

  307. meet the armies of mankind. meet the

  308. armies of Satan in what will be called

  309. the battle of Armageddon. And on that

  310. day, the day of his wrath, he will

  311. strike through the kings of this world.

  312. He will strike through the enemies. He

  313. will destroy the all of the enemies of

  314. righteousness in a single word from his

  315. mouth and Jesus will be victorious.

  316. That's the prophecy. That's the summary.

  317. That's what David sees in Psalm 110. And

  318. then John John would later see it in

  319. Revelation and write it in Revelation

  320. 19.

  321. Isaiah 42 and:e 13 said, "The Lord shall

  322. go forth as a mighty man. He shall stir

  323. up jealousy like a man of war. He shall

  324. cry, yay, roar. He shall prevail against

  325. his enemies. There's coming a day when

  326. Jesus Christ will be victorious over all

  327. of the evil in the world." How is he

  328. going to do it? Well, that brings us to

  329. verse six. We get a little bit more

  330. detail.

  331. Verse five, the warrior. Verse six, the

  332. wrath.

  333. There are six words used in verse 5, 6,

  334. and 7 that communicate the outpouring of

  335. the wrath of God upon the wicked. Let me

  336. show them to you. You might note these

  337. in your Bible. In verse five, we see

  338. that word strike.

  339. That means to smash,

  340. to obliterate.

  341. Then we in verse six we see he shall

  342. judge.

  343. That means to bring justice.

  344. He shall judge among the heathen. He

  345. shall fill the places with dead bodies.

  346. The word fill means to bring to

  347. completion, to bring to the realm.

  348. He's going to fill the places

  349. with dead bodies. That valley where the

  350. battle of Armageddon will take place

  351. will be filled.

  352. He shall wound the heads of many

  353. countries. That word, there's another

  354. word wound, to smash, to break. In fact,

  355. that word wound in verse six is the

  356. exact same Hebrew word that's translated

  357. as strike in verse 5. Exact same Hebrew

  358. word. They mean the same thing. To

  359. smash, to obliterate, to wound.

  360. And then he says in verse 7, he shall

  361. drink of the brook in the way.

  362. and then he will lift up his head. So

  363. there's six verbs in these three verses

  364. that describe for us the day of wrath

  365. that is introduced in verse 5. Verse 5

  366. tells us when the day of his wrath. What

  367. day is that? It's the day John saw in

  368. Revelation chapter 19 when Jesus Christ

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  369. will descend and us behind him and he

  370. will meet the armies of evil and he will

  371. smash them. He will strike through them.

  372. He will obliterate them in that great

  373. battle. and his enemy enemies will

  374. become his foottool. You see how the

  375. psalm has been building us to this

  376. climax.

  377. These words paint a very clear and

  378. sobering scene for us.

  379. In verse 5, really all of the psalm up

  380. to this point, we have seen Jesus in

  381. glorious majesty.

  382. We have seen Jesus lifted up. All

  383. through the first four verses, it's

  384. Jesus Christ has been exalted. But now

  385. we see Jesus, we see maybe a, could we

  386. say a little different side of Jesus in

  387. these final verses. Yes, he's still

  388. exalted. Yes, he hasn't lost anything

  389. that we've already talked about. But

  390. we're adding to his description in that

  391. he is this warrior and the day of his

  392. wrath is coming. In verse six and seven,

  393. we see his righteousness, his righteous

  394. wrath poured out on the wickedness of

  395. the earth. So what does this mean for

  396. us? Well, it it it brings good news to

  397. us. Jesus will be victorious over evil.

  398. And sometimes we can look at the world

  399. around us and we can think evil is

  400. winning. Right? You ever thought that?

  401. I've thought that. And it looks like the

  402. evilness is going to win. And for a time

  403. it may be winning, but Jesus has

  404. conquered the evilness. Jesus has

  405. conquered Satan. Jesus has conquered

  406. death. Jesus will be victorious. And

  407. there is coming a day when he will

  408. defeat all of the wickedness, all of the

  409. evilness of this world. And we look

  410. forward to that day. But it teaches us

  411. something else about Jesus which is

  412. should be somewhat sobering, maybe even

  413. convicting for us.

  414. And that is that Jesus Christ is holy

  415. and therefore hates wickedness.

  416. Hates wickedness. In fact, he cannot he

  417. cannot even look upon wickedness and

  418. evilness. Jesus is God. We learn that in

  419. verse one. And God is holy. Holy, holy,

  420. holy. Jesus Christ hates wickedness. Not

  421. just the wickedness of the world, but I

  422. think maybe even more so the wickedness

  423. in his church. Now, we're saved, right?

  424. We're Christians. I hope you're saved

  425. this morning. If you're not saved,

  426. please get saved before you leave today.

  427. I want you to be saved. But let's not

  428. pretend we're perfect people here.

  429. Salvation doesn't make me perfect.

  430. Glorification. I'm looking forward to

  431. that day when I get to heaven and I'm

  432. glorified. But while I'm here, I'm still

  433. me. I'm still in my sinful flesh. I

  434. still battle. Paul battled it. Everybody

  435. battles it. We're all sinners. So, let's

  436. not get too highurchy that we think

  437. we're okay and we don't sin around here.

  438. We do sin. Here's the sobering

  439. convicting thought. Our savior Jesus

  440. Christ hates that sin.

  441. He doesn't hate you. He loves you. He

  442. died for you. He He bought his church

  443. with his own precious blood. But he

  444. hates the sin in his church.

  445. And we live in a culture where sin has

  446. overtaken the local church.

  447. People living in sin,

  448. Christian people, you dress up and look

  449. nice and put on your deodorant and your

  450. perfume when you come in here on a

  451. Sunday, but then you go out in the world

  452. and and you live and you look and you

  453. act and you talk just like them.

  454. That's sin in the Christian's life.

  455. I don't mean to be harsh this morning.

  456. I'm going to encourage you. I want to

  457. encourage you. But I cannot walk past

  458. this verse without understanding. Hey,

  459. there is a day coming when Jesus Christ

  460. is going to pour out his wrath on the

  461. evilness of this world. You and I by the

  462. grace and mercy of God alone are exempt

  463. from that day of wrath. We'll be on the

  464. winning side. We'll be on white horses

  465. behind King Jesus as he comes out of

  466. heaven. And we praise God for that. But

  467. let's not let's not excuse our sin

  468. simply because we've been saved. Jesus

  469. still hates our sin.

  470. He still hates it.

  471. But I'm so thankful that 1 John 1:9

    1 John 1:9

  472. tells us that if we confess our sin, he

  473. is faithful and just to forgive us our

  474. sin and cleanse us from all

  475. unrighteousness.

  476. It's not that that that he hates our sin

  477. so much he will not fellowship with us.

  478. No, you repent, you confess, he is

  479. faithful,

  480. he'll welcome you right back into his

  481. arms and the fellowship will be

  482. restored. So we see the the wrath of

  483. God. We see the warrior Jesus Christ.

  484. And then in verse seven, we see the

  485. worship.

  486. The worship. Look at verse 7.

  487. He shall drink of the brook in the way.

  488. Therefore shall he lift up the head.

  489. Now, there's some pronouns here, but I

  490. think you can probably understand who

  491. we're talking about. It seems pretty

  492. clear to me. We've been talking about

  493. Jesus and to Jesus the entire psalm. So

  494. when we get to the last verse and we use

  495. the pronouns he, the context would

  496. dictate this is still Jesus Christ. So

  497. he Jesus shall drink of the brook in the

  498. way. Therefore shall he lift up the

  499. head. Let me explain these verses, these

  500. two phrases, but I'm going to invert

  501. them. I'm going to do it backwards and

  502. I'm going to do that on purpose. It

  503. says, "Therefore shall he lift up the

  504. head." What does that mean? Well, in

  505. verse 6 and verse 7, there's a contrast.

  506. At the end of verse 6, it says, "He

  507. shall wound the heads over many

  508. countries." So these are the the leaders

  509. of the world. At the battle of

  510. Armageddon, when Jesus Christ returns,

  511. there will be world leaders, world

  512. powers gathered together. And the heads

  513. of the world governments will be

  514. destroyed by Jesus Christ. And so so

  515. great a battle, so great a destruction

  516. it's going to be that the the valley

  517. there is going to be filled with the

  518. bodies of the men that Jesus Christ

  519. destroys, the evil men. And by the way,

  520. don't think for a second that Jesus is

  521. unjust in doing this. Any of those men

  522. could repent, right? They have the same

  523. opportunity everybody else has. But when

  524. they reject Jesus Christ, then Jesus

  525. must, because he hates sin, because he

  526. is holy, he has to judge wickedness. And

  527. that judgment is just and righteous. And

  528. on that day, they will be gathered

  529. together in hatred of our savior Jesus

  530. Christ. And he will come out of heaven

  531. and he will wound, destroy, smash their

  532. heads.

  533. He'll kill them. They'll be done,

  534. decimated.

  535. His enemies will become his foottool.

  536. Jesus Christ will win a great victory.

  537. So we see that in verse six. He will

  538. wound the heads. But then the psalm

  539. ends, therefore shall he lift up the

  540. head. So there are heads that are being

  541. wounded. And then there is a head. It

  542. says the head. It's a specific one

  543. that's going to be lifted up.

  544. Who do you think that might be?

  545. I think and I I don't think there's

  546. really much room for debate here. I

  547. think it's Jesus Christ.

  548. His head will be lifted up. He will be

  549. exalted. He will be worshiped. He will

  550. be set up. He will be king of the world.

  551. He will rule and reign over all of the

  552. world. Jesus Christ will be exalted on

  553. high. He will destroy the the leaders of

  554. the world. Those who think they are the

  555. heads, those who think they are in

  556. charge, those who oppose God and oppose

  557. righteousness and live in wickedness,

  558. they will be destroyed and Jesus Christ

  559. will be set up as king of kings and lord

  560. of lords and he will rule and reign over

  561. the earth. So Jesus Christ's head will

  562. be lifted up. That's how the psalm ends

  563. and it's a beautiful ending and we'll

  564. come right back to it in a minute. But

  565. let's back up and look at the first

  566. phrase at verse 7. It says he shall

  567. drink

  568. of the brook in the way.

  569. What could this mean? There is some

  570. debate about what this means,

  571. but I think that I think it's a picture

  572. and we've seen some pictures already in

  573. Psalm 110. I think this is another

  574. picture

  575. and I think it's a picture of what has

  576. to take place before Jesus Christ would

  577. be exalted.

  578. It's a prophecy

  579. that Jesus Christ would come to this

  580. earth. Let me explain it to you.

  581. The word that's used here for drink is a

  582. very interesting word. It means, and

  583. there's a lot of nuances to it, so I'm

  584. just going to summarize it. Can I just

  585. summarize it for you? It means, if we

  586. just put it out there in plain English,

  587. plain language, it means something to

  588. the effect of stopping on the side of

  589. the road to drink from a muddy puddle.

  590. That's the picture.

  591. So he's going to drink from the brook in

  592. the way. That phrase means that Jesus,

  593. he is going to stop along his way along

  594. his way to what? Well, the verse ends

  595. with him being exalted. So on his way to

  596. his eventual exaltation, to on his way

  597. to becoming king of kings, on his way to

  598. becoming lord of lords, he's going to

  599. stop and he's going to drink from a

  600. muddy, dirty puddle.

  601. I think this picture is presented by

  602. Paul in the book of Philippians when it

  603. says that Jesus Christ humbled himself

  604. and took upon him the form of a servant

  605. and came to this earth and lived. I

  606. think that what's being prophesied in

  607. the last verse is a is a we're already

  608. thinking future, right? Verse five, we

  609. shifted the tone. We're thinking future.

  610. So, what's coming? What is David seeing?

  611. He's seeing the King of Kings and the

  612. Lord of Lords. The one who sits at the

  613. right hand of God the Father, the one

  614. who has all authority, the one who has

  615. all power, the one who sits in the

  616. portals of heaven, God himself, he sees

  617. him becoming a man. And though Jesus

  618. Christ did not sin, though Jesus Christ

  619. was perfect, he came into a mud pit,

  620. didn't he,

  621. he landed in this world as a baby in a

  622. manger.

  623. And the sin of this world came so

  624. strongly against him that he only lived

  625. 33 years. And at the end of his life, he

  626. he didn't die by an accident. No, people

  627. killed him because of the sin and the

  628. wickedness and the evilness of this

  629. world. So Psalm 110, remember this is

  630. all before Jesus Christ comes. This is

  631. prophetic. When David's writing this,

  632. he's hundreds of years before Jesus

  633. would come.

  634. But he writes, "I see the King of Kings.

  635. Oh, I I see the Messiah as coming king.

  636. He's going to rule and reign forever. I

  637. see his his person. Jesus is God. And I

  638. I see his position. He is sovereign. I

  639. see his power. He's omnipotent. And and

  640. then, oh, he's going to he's going to

  641. serve as present priest. He's going to

  642. he's going to be a high priest for

  643. believers. And and then David says, "But

  644. I also see him as conquering Christ.

  645. There's coming a day when he's going to

  646. destroy all the heads of this world.

  647. There's a great plan that he has, and

  648. he's going to be exalted." Oh, but but

  649. there's one little detour before his

  650. final exaltation.

  651. He's got to come drink from

  652. the sinfulness of humanity.

  653. I think this is what is so profound and

  654. there's no way that I can possibly

  655. communicate

  656. what David is communicating, what the

  657. word of God is communicating this

  658. morning. It's so profound about the

  659. incarnation of Jesus Christ is that God

  660. himself left the portals of glory, left

  661. heaven

  662. to come dwell in a mud hole. That's the

  663. image. That's the picture word. That's

  664. the word picture. That God himself would

  665. descend and make himself lower than the

  666. angels,

  667. become a man, become one of us. And

  668. though he was perfect, he still lived in

  669. an imperfect world. That's why he had to

  670. come. Though he was sinless, he lived in

  671. a sinfilled world.

  672. Though he did no wrong, everyone did him

  673. wrong.

  674. And almighty God had to put on flesh

  675. and dwell

  676. in the sinfulness of this world as a man

  677. and do it perfectly so that he could

  678. make the sacrifice.

  679. His blood could be shed

  680. so that you and I, though we live in

  681. this sin-cursed world and we are

  682. sinners, we're not perfect, but we have

  683. hope of eternal life. You and I get to

  684. read this psalm and and obviously we can

  685. understand it on the on the far end of

  686. all of this. Now, all of these

  687. prophecies have been fulfilled except

  688. the the final one, that final day of his

  689. wrath when his enemies become his

  690. foottool. We're still expecting that.

  691. Everything else has been fulfilled for

  692. us this morning, though. We get to look

  693. back at the Messiah. We get to look back

  694. at Jesus's birth. David was looking

  695. forward to it.

  696. You and I, we get to look back and

  697. think, "Wow, what a savior that he would

  698. come to this earth, put on flesh, become

  699. a human, dwell in the sinfulness of this

  700. world, and for what reason.

  701. Look in a mirror.

  702. He did it all for me. He did it all for

  703. you." I'm finished. That's it. That's

  704. the psalm. That's Psalm 110. You can

  705. come, baby.

  706. But it ends with this powerful powerful

  707. phrase that we've already mentioned, but

  708. I want to take you back there. Jesus

  709. Christ, we've seen him in so many ways.

  710. Oh, the the theology of this psalm is so

  711. rich. We've seen him as as God. We know

  712. that Jesus is God and Jesus is sovereign

  713. and Jesus is omnipotent and Jesus is

  714. mediator and Jesus is coming back and

  715. Jesus is going to be victorious and

  716. Jesus was the baby in a manger and Jesus

  717. provided salvation for the world. And

  718. all of these things are combined in

  719. these simple seven verses is so rich.

  720. Maybe this is why this is the most

  721. quoted Old Testament psalm.

  722. It's quoted more times in the New

  723. Testament than any other psalm or

  724. alluded to. Why is that? Because it

  725. contains so much theological value. It's

  726. so rich.

  727. What should be our response? Well,

  728. there's coming a day when the head Jesus

  729. Christ will be lifted up. But there's

  730. another picture in scripture that

  731. pictures Jesus Christ is the head and

  732. it's in the New Testament once the

  733. church is established. And some people

  734. even take this last phrase of this verse

  735. to mean this. They don't mean it so much

  736. at the end when Jesus Christ will rule

  737. and reign forever, but they mean it

  738. instead that the head Jesus Christ as

  739. the head of the church will be exalted.

  740. We get to the New Testament. Jesus

  741. Christ pictures himself as the head of

  742. the church, the head of the body of

  743. believers. He's the one in charge. He's

  744. the one we worship. And we're taught in

  745. the New Testament that as a church, as a

  746. body of believers, we have great reason

  747. to each and every time we come together,

  748. lift up the head of Jesus Christ. Lift

  749. up the body and the blood of Jesus

  750. Christ. LIFT UP THE sacrifice of Jesus

  751. Christ. Lift up the the redemption of

  752. Jesus Christ. Lift up the glory of Jesus

  753. Christ. Lift up the name of Jesus

  754. Christ.

  755. He is the reason that we meet together.

  756. So yes, it is prophetic. One day there

  757. is coming a day when God will uh

  758. establish Jesus Christ as King of Kings,

  759. Lord of Lords. You and I will get to

  760. rule and reign with him as Christians

  761. and believers. It's going to be

  762. glorious. But here's my my final

  763. application. I hate to leave Psalm 110,

  764. but we've got to go somewhere else in

  765. scripture because there's more good

  766. passages. So here's my final application

  767. from Psalm 110. Why wait until the day

  768. of his wrath to start lifting him up?

  769. Let's lift him up today. Let's lift him

  770. up tomorrow. Let's lift him up as we go

  771. into 2026. Let's make it our goal. You

  772. want to make a New Year's resolution?

  773. Here's a good one to think about. This

  774. year, I'm going to lift up the name of

  775. Jesus like I've never lifted him up

  776. before. This year, I'm going to get rid

  777. of the wickedness in my life because

  778. Jesus hates wickedness. And I'm just

  779. going to focus on worshiping him. I'm

  780. gonna lift up his name. He's been so

  781. good to me. He He's been so gracious to

  782. me. He's been so merciful to me. I just

  783. want to lift up his name. 2026, I'm

  784. going to lift up his name. Maybe 2025,

  785. you didn't lift up his name like you

  786. wanted to.

  787. Maybe this year, you look back over the

  788. year and you think, I I could have been

  789. at church more, praising my savior. I

  790. could have read my Bible more,

  791. worshiping and fellowshipping with my

  792. savior.

  793. I could have been more encouraging to

  794. other believers and helped focus them

  795. more on Jesus and the Savior. I could

  796. have stopped that sin a whole lot

  797. sooner. I don't know why I let it go so

  798. long before repenting. And I'm going to

  799. do better this year at exalting the name

  800. of my savior. I I'm sure that if we look

  801. back over this past year, all of us

  802. would say, I I let him down in some way,

  803. right?

  804. But hey, we got a new year. This is the

  805. last Sunday of 2025. Next Sunday when we

  806. meet, it will be January the 4th, 2026.

  807. Can you believe it? But guess what?

  808. Jesus Christ is still the same. He's the

  809. same God that David wrote about in Psalm

  810. 110. He's still God. He's still

  811. sovereign. He's still omnipotent. He's

  812. still mediator. And he's still coming

  813. back. And he is still victorious. And if

  814. that doesn't give us, you and I, reason

  815. to lift him up and exalt his name, then

  816. I don't know what would. I don't know

  817. what else could.

  818. So my challenge to you as we conclude

  819. 2025.

  820. You see the manger, we go through the

  821. Christmas season. Oh, baby Jesus. Baby

  822. Jesus is wonderful. Let's not forget

  823. about King Jesus, though. He's coming

  824. back. And if if if for no other reason,

  825. church, your life is a mess, you you you

  826. have more questions than you have

  827. answers, and you just cannot get the joy

  828. of Christmas this season, and you've

  829. went through the whole season, and you

  830. felt low, and you felt discouraged,

  831. and you you say, "I just don't have no

  832. reason to rejoice. My worship feels

  833. stagnant."

  834. You have one thing that you can look

  835. forward to. David worshiped and he

  836. looked forward to all of these things.

  837. He hadn't experienced any of this. But

  838. there is one thing left in this psalm

  839. that has not yet happened. And if you

  840. don't have any other reason to worship

  841. him, you can worship him for that coming

  842. day when he sets up his kingdom. And we

  843. get to rule and reign with Jesus Christ

  844. forever and ever and ever and ever in a

  845. perfect world. Go read Revelation 20 and

  846. 21. Beautiful. New heaven, a new earth,

  847. gold that's crystal clear. tell me I I'm

  848. giving away messages in the future

  849. because we're going to get to Revelation

  850. here in a little bit. They tell me I you

  851. can do this research on your own that

  852. gold is yellow because of its

  853. imperfections.

  854. But if you get perfect gold, it's

  855. crystal clear. And if you go read

  856. Revelation 21 and 22 and you it begins

  857. to describe the new heaven and new

  858. earth, it talks about gold, but it's not

  859. yellow gold. It's clear gold. It's like

  860. glass. You can see straight through it.

  861. And there's no there's no there's no

  862. light in the new heaven and new earth.

  863. You know who who lights it? The one who

  864. is seated on the throne in the center of

  865. the city of Jerusalem. There don't need

  866. to be no lights cuz it's all made out of

  867. crystal clearar, perfect pure glass. And

  868. Jesus lights the entire world. And it's

  869. pure and it's perfect. And there's no

  870. sin and there's no night and there's no

  871. evil. And he's going to rule and reign

  872. supreme. and we get to enjoy that as

  873. believers. That's what's coming. Jesus

  874. is victorious. Don't lose heart. I don't

  875. know what 2026 brings. I know 2025 was

  876. rough for some,

  877. but I know God was good and God was

  878. faithful. And I don't know what's coming

  879. in 2026, but I know God will be good and

  880. God will be faithful. And at the very

  881. least, we've got a great day coming when

  882. we get to see Jesus on his throne.

  883. Would you bow your heads and close your

  884. eyes this morning? I just want you to

  885. take a moment while she prays or she

  886. plays and I want you to pray.
