  2. Revelation chapter 12. Here's what I've

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  3. labeled the passage. Heaven winds, earth

  4. whales. Heaven winds, earth whales.

  5. Revelation 12. I'll remind you, we we

  6. went there several weeks ago now. We

  7. were in Revelation 12. And it's remember

  8. it's a panorama shot. It's a lot of

  9. things going on and not all of them are

  10. taking place in chronological order. So,

  11. we have to keep that in mind when we

  12. look at Revelation 12. It's really a a

  13. broad view, a panorama shot of all that

  14. God is going to do from the birth of

  15. Jesus Christ to the eventual uh casting

  16. out of Satan. We'll see that here in a

  17. little bit. And so, there's a lot of

  18. things that take place. In fact, let me

  19. just give you a short list of the things

  20. that are found in Revelation 12. By way

  21. of review, this chapter communicates the

  22. Messiah's birth. It communicates the

  23. fall of Satan and a third of the angels.

  24. It communicates Satan as the prince and

  25. the power of the air. It communicates

  26. Satan's hatred and war against Israel.

  27. It communicates God's protection and

  28. provision over Israel. And it does all

  29. of this, like I said, out of

  30. chronological order. So, it's best to

  31. just keep this kind of backdrop in your

  32. mind as we're reading and studying that

  33. this is a a panorama shot. uh it's a

  34. little different than maybe some other

  35. passages in scripture uh even some other

  36. passages in revelation in that sense.

  37. Here's the outline that we have given

  38. this chapter

  39. verses 1-6

  40. the great wonder

  41. verse 7- 11 the great war

  42. and verse 12-1 17 the great woe. So

  43. that'll be our outline for tonight.

  44. We'll just walk through the whole

  45. chapter. Let's read it. All 17 verses to

  46. begin with and then we'll go back and

  47. we'll expound through it.

  48. Hopefully the Lord will allow us the

  49. liberty to do that tonight. Verse one,

  50. chapter 12. And there appeared a great

  51. wonder in heaven, a woman clothed with

  52. the sun and the moon under her feet, and

  53. upon her head a crown of 12 stars. And

  54. she, being with child, cried, travailing

  55. in birth, and pained to be delivered.

  56. And there appeared another wonder in

  57. heaven. And behold, a great red dragon

  58. having seven heads and 10 horns and

  59. seven crowns upon his heads. And his

  60. tail drew the third part of the stars of

  61. heaven, and did cast them to the earth.

  62. And the dragon stood before the woman

  63. which was ready to be delivered for to

  64. devour her child as soon as it was born.

  65. And she brought forth a manchild who was

  66. to rule all nations with a rod of iron.

  67. And her child was caught up to unto God

  68. and to his throne. And the woman fled

  69. into the wilderness, where she hath a

  70. place prepared of God, that they should

  71. feed her there 1,23

  72. score days. And there was war in heaven.

  73. Michael and his angels fought against

  74. the dragon, and the dragon fought and

  75. his angels, and prevailed not, neither

  76. was their place found anymore in heaven.

  77. The great dragon was cast out. that old

  78. serpent called the devil and Satan which

  79. deceiveth the whole world. He was cast

  80. out into the earth and his angels were

  81. cast out with him. And I heard a loud

  82. voice saying in heaven, "Now is come

  83. salvation and strength and the kingdom

  84. of our God and the power of his Christ.

  85. For the accuser of the brethren is cast

  86. down, which accused them before our God

  87. night and day, and they overcame him by

  88. the blood of the lamb, and by the word

  89. of their testimony, and they loved not

  90. their lives unto death. Therefore,

  91. rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell

  92. in them. Woe to the inhabitors of the

  93. earth and of the sea, for the devil has

  94. come down unto you, having great wrath,

  95. because he knoweth that he hath but a

  96. short time. This is the verse that I

  97. took my title from. Therefore, rejoice

  98. ye heavens, heaven winds. Woe to the

  99. inhabiters of the earth, earth whales.

  100. Verse 13. And when the dragon saw that

  101. he was cast unto the earth, he

  102. persecuted the woman which brought forth

  103. the manchild. And to the woman were

  104. given two wings of a great eagle, that

  105. she might fly into the wilderness into

  106. her place, where she is nourished for a

  107. time and times and half a time from the

  108. face of the serpent. And the serpent

  109. cast out of his mouth water as a flood

  110. after the woman, that he might cause her

  111. to be carried away of the flood. And the

  112. earth helped the woman, and the earth

  113. opened her mouth, and swallowed up the

  114. flood, which the dragon cast out of his

  115. mouth. And the dragon was wroth with the

  116. woman, and went to make war with the

  117. remnant of her seed, which keep the

  118. commandments of God, and have the

  119. testimony of Jesus Christ. So, I want

  120. you to notice these three sections in in

  121. the chapter tonight. We've already

  122. looked at the first one a few weeks ago

  123. in some detail, but I'm going to just go

  124. through it quickly and give us a review.

  125. So write down number one if you're

  126. taking notes. There is the great wonder.

  127. The great wonder in verses 1-6. And

  128. we're given in these verses some

  129. identifications. We have to identify

  130. some of the characters that are here.

  131. The woman is identified as the nation of

  132. Israel.

  133. The Catholics have for a long time

  134. thought that this woman was Mary, but

  135. that cannot be uh the case based on a a

  136. plain understanding of the text. Others

  137. have identified this woman as the

  138. church. However, this can't be true

  139. because the church does not give birth

  140. to Jesus, but rather the opposite. Jesus

  141. gave birth to the church. And so, it

  142. cannot be Mary. It cannot be the church.

  143. So, it's best to see the woman, and this

  144. fits in the context very well. It's best

  145. to see the woman as the nation of

  146. Israel.

  147. It's not uncommon in Old Testament

  148. passages for the nation of Israel to be

  149. pictured as a woman. Isaiah 54, Jeremiah

  150. 3, Ezekiel 16, and Hosea 2 all picture

  151. the nation of Israel as a woman. So this

  152. picture, this image is not new to

  153. scripture, and it's it fits in the

  154. larger context of scripture as well as

  155. the context of Revelation. And so we

  156. view the woman as the nation of Israel.

  157. Next, there is the child. Who is the

  158. child? The child should be viewed as

  159. Jesus Christ, the Messiah. And verse

  160. five g gives us a clear description of

  161. Jesus as the Messiah. She brought forth,

  162. she being the woman. So the Israel out

  163. of Israel comes forth this manchild who

  164. was to rule all nations with the rod of

  165. iron. And her child was called up unto

  166. God and to his throne. And so it

  167. summarizes his birth, his life, his

  168. death, his resurrection, his ascension,

  169. and his ruling and reigning. All of that

  170. is summarized right there in verse

  171. number five. his authority. He shall

  172. rule the nations with a rod of iron. His

  173. ascension and her child was caught up

  174. unto God in his throne. So the child is

  175. Jesus Christ. The woman is the nation of

  176. Israel. And then there is the dragon.

  177. And the dragon is the devil. Verse 9

  178. tells us very clearly and the great

  179. dragon was cast out that old serpent

  180. called the devil and Satan which

  181. deceiveth the whole world. So the dragon

  182. is Satan. And we have a few descriptions

  183. that are given in verse 9 of the devil.

  184. And I'll just mention these to you. I

  185. don't like talking about the guy, but we

  186. do have these descriptions given, so

  187. I'll mention them. In verse 9, he's

  188. called the serpent. It's a reference

  189. back to Genesis chapter 3 and verse

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  190. number one, which says, "Now the serpent

  191. was more subtle than any beast of the

  192. field which the Lord God had made."

  193. But by the term by the name serpent, we

  194. could we could describe him as being

  195. alluring or deceptive.

  196. He's subtle. He's deceptive.

  197. And then not only is he alluring, but he

  198. is accuser. The word, the next word

  199. that's used to describe him is the

  200. devil. The the word devil is the Greek

  201. word for accuser. It it literally means

  202. accuser. Verse number 10 reiterates this

  203. thought when it says, "And I heard a

  204. loud voice saying, now is come salvation

  205. and strength and the kingdom of our God

  206. and the power of his Christ. For the

  207. accuser of the brethren is cast down,

  208. which accused them before our God night

  209. and day." So he is alluring, he is

  210. deceptive, he is accuser. And then it

  211. says that it calls him and Satan in

  212. verse 9. And that word Satan is the word

  213. for adversary.

  214. It it has a picture of in a court of

  215. law. And this imagery, I want you to I'm

  216. going to introduce it here. We're going

  217. to come back to it a couple times before

  218. we're finished tonight. But there is

  219. this imagery, this picture of an being

  220. in a court of law, in a courtroom. And

  221. there is one who accuses us, who opposes

  222. us in the courtroom, and that is Satan.

  223. So that's the great wonder. There's a

  224. quick review of where we've already been

  225. a few weeks ago. Number two, notice the

  226. great war. I'm going to have to slow

  227. down here for just a moment and do my

  228. very best to try and do some exposition.

  229. So, there's there's a couple of things

  230. going on in these verses. There's war in

  231. heaven and then there will be wrath on

  232. earth. So, let's not confuse the two

  233. places. There war in heaven and then

  234. later in the chapter there will be wrath

  235. on earth. So, let's notice first the war

  236. that is in heaven. When does this war

  237. take place? And this is the topic of no

  238. small debate among good Bible

  239. expositors. There are good Bible

  240. expositors who are opposite on this

  241. belief here. Okay? So, I'm going to give

  242. you both sides and I'll tell you why I

  243. land where I land. It's one of those

  244. places in the book of Revelation where

  245. there's a lot of debate and and there's

  246. good men on both sides. The question

  247. that is often debated is if this war is

  248. a reference to Satan's original fall

  249. from heaven which has already been

  250. mentioned in verse four. Is this his

  251. original fall from say from heaven or is

  252. this a second prophetic war that is yet

  253. to happen in heaven?

  254. Well, what do we know?

  255. Is it a is it an original fall or is it

  256. a coming war that will take place in the

  257. midpoint of the tribulation? What do we

  258. know? We know that at some point after

  259. the creation of angels, Satan was a

  260. created angel. He's a created being.

  261. Some point after the creation of the

  262. angels and before Genesis chapter 3, we

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  263. know that the devil was cast from heaven

  264. and he took a third of the angels with

  265. him. We know this to be true. Many

  266. scriptures talk about this event. Isaiah

  267. 14, Ezekiel 28, Luke 10 mentions it. And

  268. then here in Revelation 12 and:4 is a

  269. pretty clear indication of that event,

  270. that original fall that happened between

  271. the creation of angels and Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  272. chapter 3, some point in that window,

  273. Satan fell from heaven.

  274. We also know that Satan has had and

  275. seems to still have some access to

  276. heaven. Now, how this works, I don't

  277. know. God doesn't tell us, so let's not

  278. try to figure it out. But what we know

  279. according to Job chapter 1 is that the

    Job 1 chapter mention

  280. devil comes before God and uh to give

  281. some kind of report. There's some kind

  282. of way that the devil has access to uh

  283. to God. And and I'll support that even

  284. further from our passage in verse number

  285. 10. If you look at the end of the verse,

  286. it says, "The accuser of the brethren is

  287. cast down." How does he accuse the

  288. brethren? Well, notice verse 10 says,

  289. "He has accused them before our God day

  290. and night.

  291. So the devil has some access clearly has

  292. some access to heaven. Now we don't know

  293. how that works, but he's there accusing

  294. you and I before Almighty God. So with

  295. these things that we know, we know Satan

  296. did fall. We know that he still has

  297. access to God in some way.

  298. What can we conclude about when this war

  299. is going to take place? Could this be a

  300. reference to the original fall of Satan?

  301. Sure. Absolutely. I think it could be.

  302. There's an argument to be made for that

  303. interpretation.

  304. However, I think it seems to fit in the

  305. broader text of scripture to view this

  306. as a second prophetic battle that will

  307. result in Satan's eternal elimination

  308. from heaven. That he will be uh

  309. completely defeated. He will not be able

  310. to return to heaven anymore. And I'm

  311. going to show you why I think that.

  312. Okay,

  313. this fits well with the phrase that we

  314. find in verse number 12.

  315. the end of verse number 12, the verse

  316. ends with a short time. You see that

  317. phrase? What is the short time? Well, at

  318. this point in the tribulation, at this

  319. point in the book of Revelation, we are

  320. halfway through the tribulation period,

  321. which means that there are three and a

  322. half more years left uh before Satan is

  323. eventually defeated. So, this battle

  324. that John is seeing is going to take

  325. place at the midpoint of the

  326. tribulation. So the short time is then a

  327. reference to the final three and a half

  328. years. So at best the devil has three

  329. and a half years left before he is

  330. permanently eliminated when he is cast

  331. from heaven and he is cast to the earth.

  332. So he's given three and a half more

  333. years to do his work on the earth and

  334. then God's going to eliminate him at the

  335. end.

  336. Th this is uh well supported throughout

  337. scripture that the short time is three

  338. and a half years. Let me uh even our

  339. context verse 6 says has a 3 and 1/2

  340. year reference. Chapter 12 6 they said

  341. that they should feed her there that is

  342. feed the woman the nation of Israel

  343. they're going to feed her 1,23

  344. score days. You know how many years that

  345. is three and a half years. In verse 14

  346. of chapter 12, the woman were given two

  347. wings of a great eagle that she might

  348. fly into the wilderness into her place

  349. where she is nourished for here you go a

  350. time and times and half a time from the

  351. face of the serpent. Guess how many

  352. times that is? That's three and a half

  353. years. And then if you go to chapter 13

  354. and verse number five, there was given

  355. unto him a mouth speaking great things

  356. and blasphemies and power was given unto

  357. him to continue 40 and two months. So

  358. how long is Satan continuing?

  359. 40 and two months. Guess how long that

  360. is? Three and a half years. So, we put

  361. all of these pieces together and it we

  362. can conclude that whatever John is

  363. seeing, it seems to be taking place at

  364. the midpoint of the tribulation and

  365. Satan is going to be cast from heaven

  366. but given three and a half more years to

  367. do his work on earth before he's

  368. permanently eliminated.

  369. So, that's the that's the short version.

  370. Okay? There's much more and and you can

  371. do further research on this, but that's

  372. that's why I land where I land. I think

  373. this is I'll give you one more. Can I

  374. give you one more support? I don't have

  375. my watch tonight, so y'all are in

  376. trouble. All right, let me give you one

  377. more support. In verse number 10, he

  378. said, "And I heard a loud voice saying

  379. in heaven, now is come salvation and

  380. strength and the kingdom of our God and

  381. the power of his Christ." Okay, this is

  382. happening after Satan has been cast

  383. down, for the accuser of the brethren is

  384. cast down, which accused, that's past

  385. tense. You see that? Which accused them

  386. before God night and day. So if this is

  387. a reference to the original fall of

  388. Satan, when was he allowed to accuse the

  389. brethren? Because according to this,

  390. he's accusing them no more after this

  391. battle.

  392. Right? Y'all with me? So he cannot

  393. accuse them anymore after this battle.

  394. So if this is the original fall, when

  395. was he accuser of the brethren? Because

  396. there was no people alive. Make sense?

  397. Okay. So that's why those are some

  398. reasons why I think this is a second

  399. prophetic battle that is that is coming.

  400. Okay, where does this happen? It happens

  401. in heaven. Who who does it happen? This

  402. is interesting and I'll just mention it.

  403. We'll go to point number three. Satan is

  404. not fighting against God in this battle.

  405. He's fighting against angels. Satan has

  406. done a great job of creating a

  407. counterfeit that uh pictures him as

  408. God's opposite. So you have God and then

  409. you have the devil and they're fighting

  410. against each other. God's not fighting.

  411. God's already won. Satan is not fighting

  412. against God. Satan is not a God. Satan

  413. is not equal to God. Uh Satan is under

  414. the authority and the power of God. God

  415. has won. Satan is defeated. And so in

  416. this battle, God's just sitting on the

  417. throne. He ain't even fighting. If you

  418. look at the text, it's the in verse 7,

  419. there is war in heaven. Who is fighting

  420. the war? Michael and his angels fought

  421. against the dragon and the dragon fall

  422. and his angels. So, it's an angelic war.

  423. And this devil has already lost.

  424. Okay. Number three, the great woe. In

  425. verse 12 through 17 of our text of this

  426. chapter, uh there is the wailing that

  427. comes on earth. Look at verse number 12.

  428. Therefore, rejoice ye heavens. Why do we

  429. rejoice? That's verse number 11. Hold

  430. verse number 11. Don't read it yet. Hold

  431. on to it. We're going to come right back

  432. to it in a minute. Verse 12, though.

  433. Rejoice ye heavens and ye that dwell in

  434. them. Woe to the inhabitants of the

  435. earth and the sea, for the devil is come

  436. down unto you having great wrath because

  437. he knoweth that he hath but a short

  438. time. Here's what happens. Satan and his

  439. angels fight Michael and his angels. The

  440. devil loses. He's permanently cast out

  441. from heaven. He's put down on earth. He

  442. has a short time, only three and a half

  443. years left. And the devil is a sore

  444. loser. So when he gets back to earth, he

  445. is an angry we we uh Christmas movies.

  446. Um, we was watching these Christmas

  447. movies and we we whenever our kids now

  448. get an attitude and they start being

  449. mean to one another, we say they're an

  450. angry elf. Okay. So, if they're having

  451. an attitude, that's an angry elf, right?

  452. Right, Tucker? Are you an angry elf

  453. sometimes? No. No, no, no. Okay. Uh, so

  454. [laughter] when I I read this this

  455. afternoon, I thought the devil comes

  456. back to earth as an angry elf. Okay. I

  457. don't mean no disrespect by that, but he

  458. is mad. He is a sore loser. and he comes

  459. back to the earth for these final three

  460. and a half years full of wrath and rage.

  461. And so that's why we say the earth wales

  462. because not only is God's judgments

  463. coming in these final three and a half

  464. years, but now Satan himself is full of

  465. wrath and he has three and a half years

  466. to destroy um the people essentially

  467. God's people. And so verses 15 and 16,

  468. let me read down through there. And this

  469. is pretty self-explanatory except for

  470. one part and I'll I'll mention it to

  471. you. and then I'll give you an

  472. application. So he has a short time, the

  473. end of verse 12, verse 13. And when the

  474. dragon saw that he was cast to the

  475. earth, so he realizes this is almost

  476. over for me. I've lost. He persecuted

  477. the woman which brought forth the

  478. manchild. So who is he persecuting in

  479. these final three and a half years?

  480. Where is he engaging most of his

  481. conflict? The nation of Israel, right?

  482. So he's going to persecute the woman

  483. which brought forth the manchild. And to

  484. the woman we're given two great wings of

  485. an eagle that she might fly into the

  486. wilderness into her place where she is

  487. nourished for a time and times and half

  488. a time from the face of the serpent. So

  489. he's got three and a half years. He's

  490. going to persecute the woman. He's going

  491. to persecute the nation of Israel. God

  492. providentially

  493. protects the nation of Israel for these

  494. final three and a half years. What all

  495. that entails, I'm not sure. There's a

  496. lot of people who have a lot of ideas

  497. about what two wings of a great eagle

  498. could mean. Some even mean some some

  499. even say that it's the United States

  500. helping the nation of Israel. I don't I

  501. wouldn't say that. We're just

  502. understanding the context and what's

  503. going on in the world. I don't know how

  504. God's going to do it, but I know God's

  505. going to protect the nation of Israel

  506. during this time. That's what the Bible

  507. tells us. Okay. Verse 15. And the

  508. serpent cast out. This is really

  509. interesting

  510. and I don't know what it means. So I'll

  511. just tell you on the front end. Okay.

  512. And the serpent cast out of his mouth

  513. water as a flood after the woman, that

  514. he might cause her to be carried away of

  515. the flood. And the earth helped the

  516. woman. And the earth opened her mouth

  517. and swallowed up the flood which the

  518. dragon cast out of his mouth. It's a

  519. really interesting picture, a really

  520. interesting scene that takes place as

  521. Satan attacks the woman. As Satan

  522. attacks Israel, he comes out of his

  523. mouth a great flood of water. Now,

  524. there's a lot of debate on if this

  525. should be taken literally or if this is

  526. just a picture. I either way we we can

  527. accomplish the purpose of the text.

  528. Okay, the passage is not hindered in

  529. this case with with however you choose

  530. to interpret this. If it is literal,

  531. that's going to be wild to see, right? I

  532. mean, that's going to be pretty crazy

  533. that Satan spews water out of his mouth

  534. to drown the nation of Israel. The earth

  535. opens up and the waterfall is created

  536. and God spares Israel. That's going to

  537. be pretty crazy. It could just be a

  538. reference that Satan is using all of his

  539. resources. He's doing everything he can

  540. to destroy the nation of Israel and

  541. everything he does, God spares Israel.

  542. Could be that. Uh either way you take it

  543. though, what we know is the truth of the

  544. passage is that God is going to protect

  545. his people during these final three and

  546. a half years. God's people will be

  547. protected providentially. So that's the

  548. point. However you choose to interpret

  549. that uh interesting scene. And then

  550. verse 17, Satan is extremely angry,

  551. seeks to torment the earth, especially

  552. those who carry the name of Jesus. And

  553. so the dragon was wroth with the woman,

  554. and he went to make war with the remnant

  555. of her seed, which keep the commandments

  556. of God and have the testimony of Jesus

  557. Christ. And so that's the end of verse

  558. or chapter number 12. I want to go back

  559. to verse number 11. And I want to leave

  560. you with this verse because it is a

  561. powerful powerful verse, a beautiful

  562. verse of scripture.

  563. The way to defeat Satan has always been

  564. the same. It has always been and it will

  565. always be the same. In the Old

  566. Testament, it was the blood of a

  567. temporary lamb sacrifice. The New

  568. Testament, Jesus Christ comes and he is

  569. the perfect spotless lamb and he dies on

  570. the cross for the sins of the world. And

  571. with his blood, you and I are redeemed.

  572. It's always been through the blood of

  573. the lamb. The Old Testament pictured the

  574. lamb who would shed his blood for your

  575. sins and mine. And verse number 11 says,

  576. "And they overcame him." Overcame who?

  577. They overcame the serpent, the dragon,

  578. the devil. How did they do it? By the

  579. blood of the lamb, and by the word of

  580. their testimony. And they loved not

  581. their lives unto death. Here we go. Let

  582. me give you this picture, and we're

  583. done. When we come to Revelation 12,

  584. especially these verses 7 through 12 or

  585. so, there is this imagery of a courtroom

  586. where Satan has come before God, before

  587. the throne of God. And before the throne

  588. of God, he is accusing me and you of

  589. sin.

  590. It looks like this. Um, God,

  591. did you see what Pastor John did last

  592. night?

  593. Did you see what he said last night? He

  594. He does not deserve to be your child. He

  595. does not deserve to pastor your people.

  596. And and here's the sobering truth is

  597. he's right.

  598. I did do the thing. I did say the thing.

  599. I don't deserve to be a child of God. I

  600. don't deserve to pastor God's people.

  601. But standing ne sitting rather next to

  602. God is Jesus Christ.

  603. And when Satan says, "Hey, did you see

  604. what he did?" Jesus says, "Oh, I already

  605. paid for that."

  606. Oh, no. No. Don't worry about that,

  607. father. Don't worry about that, Dad. I

  608. paid for that one. That one is covered

  609. by the blood of the lamb.

  610. And so, you and I tonight, yes, we're

  611. imperfect people.

  612. How do we overcome Satan? How do we

  613. overcome the evilness of the world? It's

  614. the same way we've always done it. Same

  615. way God's people have always done it. By

  616. just trusting in the blood of Jesus

  617. Christ. And with the blood of Jesus

  618. Christ comes victory over anything that

  619. would harm us. Jesus wins in the end. So

  620. I hope that's encouraging to you

  621. tonight. Let's pray and let's thank the

  622. Lord for Revelation chapter 12.
