  1. Joshua chapter 3. This morning, I want

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  2. to preach for just a little bit this

  3. morning on this thought. God can do it

  4. again.

  5. God can do it again.

  6. I'm sure this morning that many of us

  7. have heard and we could probably relay

  8. stories of great moves of God in the

  9. past going to Christian school. Part of

  10. my curriculum in Christian school and

  11. then even when I was homeschooled was to

  12. study some of the revivals of days gone

  13. by to study some of the messages that

  14. have been preached by men of God who God

  15. moved powerfully through. And I could

  16. stand here this morning and give you

  17. names like David Brainer and the great

  18. preacher that David Brainer was and how

  19. God used him and the great awakening and

  20. one of the greatest revivals that the

  21. world has ever seen. And other men like

  22. Jonathan Edwards who preached probably

  23. the greatest message this side of the

  24. Apostle Paul's ministry that has ever

  25. been preached, sinners in the hands of

  26. an angry God. You can go look it up and

  27. read his sermon. He just stood and he

  28. did not he was not dynamic and he was

  29. not theatrical. He just stood and he

  30. read off of a paper his sermon and the

  31. Holy Spirit of God came down on that

  32. place. Revival broke out and it sparked

  33. revival all over the New England area

  34. and it spread across the United States.

  35. And I could tell you stories of great

  36. moves of God and how God has built

  37. churches in the past and how God has

  38. provided for his people in the past. and

  39. and we could sit here and maybe even on

  40. a more personal note, we could talk and

  41. tell testimony this morning of

  42. experiences that you have seen in your

  43. life where you watched a child who was

  44. away from God get miraculously brought

  45. back and God did a miracle and restored

  46. a relationship and you can talk about a

  47. disease that the doctor said all hope

  48. was gone and and there was no hope of of

  49. them ever having a normal life and then

  50. God stepped in and the great physician

  51. healed them in that moment. And we could

  52. talk about all these things how God has

  53. provided for your needs and God has

  54. protected you during times of difficulty

  55. and God has come through in your life in

  56. the past. And we could share testimony

  57. after testimony after testimony. We

  58. could go around the room this morning

  59. and just share story after story of how

  60. God has moved in mighty ways in the

  61. past. And there's nothing wrong with

  62. that. We ought to do that from time to

  63. time.

  64. But here's what I know. You came in here

  65. this morning and though you're thankful

  66. for what God has done in the past and

  67. you're thankful for the revivals of the

  68. past and you're thankful for how God has

  69. touched your life in the past and you're

  70. thankful for the miracles that God has

  71. done in the past, you walked in those

  72. doors this morning with a new battle.

  73. And you walked in those doors this

  74. morning facing a new situation and you

  75. walked in those doors this morning

  76. facing a new mountain.

  77. And perhaps, just maybe this morning in

  78. this crowd of people or maybe even

  79. someone who could not even muster the

  80. courage to be here this morning but will

  81. watch later on YouTube.

  82. In your back of your mind, there's a

  83. whisper.

  84. There's a question.

  85. Oh, you know he's faithful. You know

  86. he's come through in the past. You know

  87. God is able. uh and and and you have

  88. seen him do great things maybe for your

  89. parents or for the generation before you

  90. or for your grandparents or you've seen

  91. the revivals and you know that God is

  92. able but in the back of your mind this

  93. morning you're facing this mountain.

  94. You're facing this challenge and there's

  95. a whisper that says, "Can God do it

  96. again?

  97. I'm thankful for all he's done back

  98. there, but that doesn't help me right

  99. now. I'm facing a new challenge today.

  100. I'm facing a new battle today. I'm I'm

  101. facing a new obstacle. I need new faith

  102. and I I need God to do it again for me.

  103. Can God do it today? Can God do it

  104. again? Can God send revival like he did

  105. in days of old? Can God still deliver

  106. people from alcohol? Can God still

  107. deliver marriages? Can God still bring

  108. back wayward children? Can God still

  109. provide for your finances? Can God still

  110. uh do great things through a local

  111. church? Can God do it again? And you

  112. fill in the blank with whatever the

  113. challenge is that you walked in here

  114. with this morning. And by the way, let's

  115. not pretend like we're perfect.

  116. We all have a battle.

  117. We're all facing a challenge.

  118. We're all probably facing a storm of

  119. some kind. Whether it relates to us

  120. individually or it affects someone who

  121. we are very close to. There's always in

  122. this sin-cursed world, there's always a

  123. problem. There's always a prayer

  124. request. There's always something. And

  125. and perhaps this morning you walked in

  126. saying, "God, can you do it again? Can

  127. you do it for me? Oh, I know you did it

  128. for them. I I know I've heard the

  129. stories and I know you came through back

  130. there, but what about me? Can you do it

  131. today? Can you do it for me?" This

  132. morning, I came to tell you based on the

  133. word of God, and I'll show it to you

  134. from the text that God can do it again.

  135. The same God that they served years ago

  136. is the same God that we serve today. The

  137. same God who brought revival years ago

  138. is the same God that we serve today. The

  139. same God who delivered people years ago

  140. is the same God that we serve today. The

  141. same God that our parents and our

  142. grandparents talk about doing great

  143. miracles and great revivals of the past

  144. is the same God that we serve today. The

  145. same God that has delivered alcoholics

  146. before is the same God we serve today.

  147. The same God who has delivered children

  148. before is the same God that we serve

  149. today. The same God that has made a way

  150. through the wilderness before is the

  151. same God that we serve today. The same

  152. God who has healed people before is the

  153. same God that we serve today. The Bible

  154. tells us that he is the same yesterday,

  155. today, and forever. Jesus never fails.

  156. And one way that we know that Jesus

  157. never fails is because Jesus never

  158. changes. He's always the same. He's

  159. always powerful. He's always working.

  160. He's always up to something. He's always

  161. faithful. Jesus never fails. And I came

  162. to tell you this morning, and with God's

  163. help, I'm going to preach to the very

  164. best of my ability, that God can do it

  165. again. God can do it for you. God can do

  166. it for your family. God can do it for

  167. your home. God can do it for our church.

  168. Whatever the battle is, whatever the

  169. situation is, whatever you're facing or

  170. going through, God can do it again.

  171. We come to Joshua chapter 3, and the

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  172. nation of Israel is on the eastward bank

  173. of the Jordan River, and they're getting

  174. ready to go across into what we call the

  175. promised land or the land of Canaan. not

  176. a picture of heaven so much as a picture

  177. of the victorious Christian life

  178. following our leader Jesus into the

  179. battles that Satan throws at us and

  180. coming out victorious because we do it

  181. God's way. The nation of Israel is here

  182. on the bank of the Jordan River and

  183. they're getting ready to go across. What

  184. you must understand, we'll read it in

  185. the text in just a moment, is that the

  186. Jordan River is overflowing its banks.

  187. It's it is virtually impassible at this

  188. time. you. It would be impossible for a

  189. nation of a million people to cross over

  190. this gushing river. It was far too

  191. dangerous. It was an obstacle that stood

  192. in their way. And it was preventing them

  193. from going into the promised land. And

  194. perhaps this morning we can hear the

  195. whisper that goes through the camp of

  196. Israel.

  197. You know, God

  198. years ago for mom and dad, he parted the

  199. Red Sea

  200. and they came out of Egypt and they was

  201. there on the banks of the Red Sea and

  202. and the waters parted and the nation of

  203. Israel walked across on dry ground and

  204. and oh, we've heard those stories

  205. and we we know that God did it before

  206. and we know that God did it for the

  207. generation before us and and we remember

  208. all that God did and we remember the

  209. stories and but but I just

  210. This river is really fast right now.

  211. It's really full right now.

  212. And perhaps throughout the camp of the

  213. nation of Israel as they're camped there

  214. on the eastward bank, you would hear

  215. whispers, "Can God do it again?

  216. C can God do the miracle again? How is

  217. God going to get us over this time?"

  218. I want you to look at the text and then

  219. I'm going to give you just a few points

  220. from the text this morning that I think

  221. will help us if perhaps this morning you

  222. are asking this question. And by the

  223. way, if I'll just be transparent with

  224. you as your pastor, I have asked this

  225. question in recent days. God,

  226. can you do it again?

  227. God, can you come through for your

  228. people again?

  229. I'm not preaching at you this morning.

  230. I'm preaching with you. And I want us to

  231. together look at the word of God and I

  232. want us to find a promise that God can

  233. do it again. Joshua 3, I'm going to pick

  234. up in verse number six this morning.

  235. And Joshua spake unto the priest,

  236. saying, "Take up the ark of the covenant

  237. and pass over before the people." And

  238. they took up the ark of the covenant and

  239. went before the people. The Lord said

  240. unto Joshua, "This day will I begin to

  241. magnify thee in the sight of all Israel,

  242. that they may know that as I was with

  243. Moses, so I will be with thee. And thou

  244. shalt command the priest that bear the

  245. ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are

  246. come to the brink of the water of

  247. Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan."

  248. And Joshua said unto the children of

  249. Israel, "Come hither and hear the words

  250. of the Lord your God." And Joshua said,

  251. "Hereby, ye shall know that the living

  252. God," by the way, if we're thinking,

  253. "Can God do it?" Again, one thing we

  254. have to recognize, this isn't part of

  255. the outline, but it just jumped off at

  256. the page at me. One thing we've got to

  257. understand and realize is that we serve

  258. a living God still today. He's not dead.

  259. His hands are not tied. He's not

  260. wondering what he's going to do. He's

  261. not out of moves and wondering, "Oh man,

  262. what's happening with the world? It's

  263. out of control. How am I going to fix

  264. all this?" No, he's a living God. He's

  265. still on the throne. He's still in

  266. control. He has all power and he knows

  267. exactly what he's doing this morning in

  268. the world affairs and in your life's

  269. affairs. He's a living God. He's a

  270. personal God. He's an active God. Joshua

  271. reminds the people of that. He said,

  272. "And you're going to know that you serve

  273. a living God. And he is among you that

  274. he will without fail." Jesus never

  275. fails. He will without fail drive out

  276. from before you the Canaanites and the

  277. Hittites and the Hivites and the

  278. Perizzites and the Gegosites and the

  279. Amorites and the Jebusites and even the

  280. Mosquitoes. if you want to add that in.

  281. Verse 11, behold, the ark of the

  282. covenant of the Lord of all the earth

  283. passes over before you into Jordan.

  284. Now therefore take you 12 men out of the

  285. tribes of Israel, out of every tribe of

  286. man. And it shall come to pass as soon

  287. as the souls of the feet of the priests

  288. that bear the ark of the covenant of the

  289. Lord, the Lord of all the earth shall

  290. rest in the waters of Jordan.

  291. Again, they're going to be in the waters

  292. of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan

  293. shall be cut off from the waters that

  294. come down from above, and they shall

  295. stand upon a heap. And it shall come to

  296. pass when the people were removed from

  297. their tents to pass over Jordan. And the

  298. priests bearing the ark of the covenant

  299. before the people. And as they that bear

  300. the ark were come into Jordan. And the

  301. feet of the priests that bear the ark

  302. were dipped in the brim of the water.

  303. For Jordan overflowth all his banks all

  304. the time of harvest. That the waters

  305. which came down from above stood and

  306. rose upon heap very far from the city

  307. Adam that is beside Zeratan. And those

  308. that came down toward the sea of the

  309. plain even the salt sea failed. Jesus

  310. never fails but he caused the water to

  311. fail and they were cut off. And the

  312. people passed over right against

  313. Jericho. And the priests that bear the

  314. ark of the covenant of the Lord stood

  315. firm on dry ground in the midst of

  316. Jordan. And then I want you to pay

  317. attention to this last phrase. We're

  318. going to come back to it at the very end

  319. of the sermon this morning. and all

  320. the Israelites

  321. passed over on dry ground until

  322. all the people were passed clean over

  323. Jordan.

  324. This morning I want to tell you that God

  325. can do it again.

  326. How can we see him do it again? Because

  327. we see churches all over the United

  328. States. we see even see our church and

  329. sometimes it just feels like we're in a

  330. rut that we're going through motions

  331. that we're just going Sunday to Sunday.

  332. We're just getting by. We're just uh

  333. doing the same religious routine, the

  334. the same ritual and it's like where is

  335. the power of God? Why are we not seeing

  336. God's power in our church? More

  337. personally for you this morning, God,

  338. where are you at in my life? Where's the

  339. miracle at in my life? God, why have you

  340. not come through in recent days for me?

  341. I want to see God's power. Can we just

  342. testify this morning? And if you're with

  343. me, and this is my heart, if you're with

  344. me, and you say, "I desire to see God's

  345. power in my life and in my church. I

  346. want to see miracles take place. I want

  347. to see a great move of God and God can

  348. use me." If that's you, can you just

  349. testify? Raise your hand. Say, "I'm with

  350. you, Pastor John. I want to see God's

  351. power." Wonderful. So, we're all on the

  352. same page. So, how do we see it? Because

  353. we know based on the Bible, we just read

  354. it from the text that God can do it

  355. again. He did part the Jordan River. He

  356. did come through. How did he do it for

  357. the nation of Israel? And how does he do

  358. it for you and I? Here's the thing. I

  359. don't think that God has stopped moving.

  360. I don't believe for a second that God

  361. has stopped working. I don't believe for

  362. a minute that God is done with the local

  363. church. I don't think that God is done

  364. with your life or with your family. In

  365. fact, we could survey the United States

  366. and we would see God doing great moves

  367. and and revivals taking place in the

  368. United States and around the world. Even

  369. this morning, people are getting saved

  370. in churches not very far from ours this

  371. morning. There is God is still moving.

  372. God is still working. Families are still

  373. getting right. Relationships are still

  374. being destroyed. Or repaired. Uh uh uh

  375. addictions are being destroyed. God is

  376. still working and moving. So, how can we

  377. make sure we see it when he does it

  378. here? That's the sermon today. God can

  379. do it again. I want to make sure I see

  380. it when he does. Number one, write this

  381. down.

  382. We must follow

  383. God.

  384. That sounds very basic and it is

  385. extremely simple, but it's much easier

  386. said than it is done. Look at the text.

  387. I want to show you a few verses. In

  388. verse number three of chapter 3, I'm not

  389. making this up. This is straight out of

  390. the text. God tells them that they are

  391. to follow the ark of the covenant. We

  392. spoke about this last week. I'm not

  393. going to belabor the point. I'm going to

  394. apply the point today. Look at verse

  395. three. He says that they are to that

  396. very end go after it. Now look down at

  397. verse number six. And Joshua spake unto

  398. the priest, saying, take up the ark of

  399. the covenant, pass over. What's the next

  400. word in your Bible? Before

  401. the people. And they took up the ark and

  402. went, what's the next word? Before the

  403. people. All right, look down at verse

  404. number 11. Repetition over and over. God

  405. is God is telling them this. Why?

  406. Because I think it's very important.

  407. It's a key to the whole text. Look at

  408. verse 11. Behold, the ark of the

  409. covenant of the Lord of all the earth

  410. passeth over

  411. before

  412. you into Jordan. Look at verse number

  413. 13.

  414. And as it shall come to pass, as soon as

  415. the souls of your feet, and the priests

  416. that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord

  417. of all the earth shall rest in the

  418. waters, that the waters of Jordan shall

  419. be cut off from the waters that come

  420. down from above, and they shall stand

  421. upon heap. Verse 14. And it came to pass

  422. when the people removed from their tents

  423. to pass over Jordan, and the priest

  424. bearing the ark of the covenant

  425. before the people.

  426. You notice the over and over and over in

  427. this one chapter in just these few

  428. verses, God is emphasizing the point

  429. that the ark of the covenant was to go

  430. before the people. I think there's a

  431. great principle in this for us today.

  432. That you and I, if we want to see God do

  433. the miracle, we must follow God. You

  434. will not see God do a great miracle in

  435. your life. We will not see God do a

  436. great miracle in our church until we are

  437. willing to say yes, Lord. Whatever you

  438. want, we will do. Now, I'm going to

  439. preach for just a minute this morning,

  440. and I don't want to make you

  441. uncomfortable, but I'm going to tell you

  442. what I believe the Bible is very clear

  443. about, okay? And there's a lot of

  444. confusion about things in the world, and

  445. somebody's got to stand up and tell the

  446. truth, and that's my job. So, if you

  447. don't like it, I apologize. Actually,

  448. no, I don't. I'm not sorry one bit. It's

  449. what the Bible says. I'm going to tell

  450. you what the Bible says. You take it up

  451. with God. Here's the question I want you

  452. to ask yourself this morning. Who are

  453. you following?

  454. We live in a social media world.

  455. Everybody's got social media now.

  456. Everybody's got followers and they're

  457. following. Can I tell you who I'm most

  458. interested in following this morning?

  459. It's not the Pope. It's not the church,

  460. the Catholic Church. It's not a

  461. denomination. It's not a person. It's

  462. not the president. It's not the

  463. government. It's not It's not anybody.

  464. You know who I'm most interested in

  465. following this morning? It's King Jesus.

  466. My goal is not to follow tradition. My

  467. goal is to follow Jesus. What God says

  468. that is what we will do. What about in

  469. our church this morning? Who are we

  470. following? There are what we call, if

  471. you keep up, I do because I'm a pastor.

  472. I look at churches all the time. I watch

  473. churches all the time. There are what we

  474. call church trends.

  475. Something is trending in the church. Can

  476. I tell you some of them are good, most

  477. of them are bad, most of them are not

  478. biblical. And so what I am not

  479. interested in doing this morning for for

  480. our church, what I'm not interested in

  481. doing uh in this place is following

  482. church trends. I'm interested in

  483. following God. So you have trends on one

  484. side and you have tradition on the other

  485. side. And there are other churches who

  486. refuse to change anything, refuse to do

  487. anything different, refuse to to change

  488. at all anything. we can't make any

  489. difference because we're just going to

  490. be stuck in tradition. Well, I'm here to

  491. tell you I'm not following tradition.

  492. I'm glad that God used certain things to

  493. reach the culture that came before me,

  494. but that some of those things just don't

  495. work today. Culture changes. People

  496. change. God doesn't change, but people

  497. change. And how we reach people can and

  498. I even would say should change. Who are

  499. we following this morning? It's a simple

  500. example using the church, but let's make

  501. it more personal to you. Who are you

  502. following this morning in your life?

  503. I Is it some person who you look up to?

  504. What? Let's let's let's let's just nail

  505. down some specific things today.

  506. Who are you following for your

  507. salvation?

  508. Are you following what you learned as a

  509. kid for your salvation? Or are you

  510. following what the Bible says for your

  511. salvation?

  512. There's a lot of ideas, especially if

  513. you were raised in a church that does

  514. not teach biblical gospel message, that

  515. salvation is by grace through faith in

  516. the finished work of Jesus Christ alone.

  517. That he paid it all on Calvary and that

  518. you can come to him in humility and

  519. whosoever shall call on the name of the

  520. Lord shall be saved and and eternally

  521. secure. He did all the work for us. He

  522. paid our penalty. He paid the price in

  523. full. There's nothing I can do to earn

  524. it. There's nothing I can do to lose it.

  525. It's all up to God. So, I place my trust

  526. and my faith completely in him. Perhaps

  527. that's not what you were taught as a

  528. kid. You were taught something

  529. different. I'll use a popular example.

  530. The Catholic Church sprinkles you as a

  531. baby and they say that that's good

  532. enough. That that'll help you. It

  533. doesn't do anything for a baby except

  534. get that baby wet. Baptism doesn't save

  535. you. What are you following to get to

  536. heaven this morning? Are you following

  537. some tradition? Are you following some

  538. lesson? some Sunday school teacher that

  539. told you something that was not based on

  540. the word of God. Or have you looked into

  541. the Bible? Have you found good Bible

  542. teaching, put it in context, and said,

  543. "Wait a minute. God says that we are

  544. saved by grace through faith, not of

  545. yourselves. It is a gift of God, not of

  546. works, lest any man should boast." That

  547. means I have to just simply trust in

  548. Jesus Christ to get saved. And he's

  549. going to take care of the rest of it.

  550. Which, by the way, is wonderful news.

  551. That's what gospel means, good news. Who

  552. are you following this morning to get

  553. you to heaven?

  554. Okay, let's go a little more

  555. controversial.

  556. Who are you following this morning with

  557. your finances?

  558. Oh, Pastor John, don't go there. Don't

  559. preach on money this morning. I will do

  560. it very quickly. Who are you following

  561. with your money? Now, there are some

  562. people out there who can give good

  563. counsel on what to do with your money,

  564. but listen to me. Did you know the Bible

  565. has much to say about your money? The

  566. Bible has much to say. It gives you much

  567. guidance and many principles on how you

  568. should steward your money and how you

  569. how you should purchase things and how

  570. what things you should avoid. And the

  571. Bible gives us great direction on how to

  572. manage money. Who are you following?

  573. Dave Ramsey.

  574. I like some of Dave Ramsey stuff. Sure.

  575. But is he the is he the go-to for you or

  576. is it the word of God?

  577. Is this what you follow more than

  578. anything else

  579. when it comes to your finances? Let's

  580. let's talk about something else.

  581. The the most of the parents of of our

  582. kids in our church are not here. They're

  583. sick. They got stuff going on. But I'm

  584. going to preach to them anyways for just

  585. a minute. Maybe I'll just look at the

  586. camera. Okay.

  587. Who are you following

  588. in your parenting?

  589. The culture is full of ideas on how we

  590. are supposed to raise our kids. You can

  591. Google it. You can look it up on social

  592. media. There are so many people on Tik

  593. Tok and Instagram and Facebook that will

  594. tell you this is how you have to parent

  595. your kids. This is the only way that

  596. works. This is the only right way to do

  597. it. Are you following them in your

  598. parenting or are you studying what the

  599. Bible has said? Did you know that the

  600. Bible speaks about how to raise godly

  601. children?

  602. It gives us the principles that we need

  603. to follow on how to raise kids that love

  604. God and sing loud and follow Jesus.

  605. Who are you following? What about with

  606. your priorities in your life? Who do you

  607. follow with what comes first? Because

  608. the culture will tell you that sports

  609. have to come first and that family has

  610. to come first and that and that finances

  611. have to come first and that the American

  612. dream has to come first. But what comes

  613. first for you? The Bible teaches us that

  614. God should come first. Seek ye first the

  615. kingdom of God and all these other

  616. things the Bible said will be added unto

  617. you. Do you seek God first? I'll tell

  618. you a great way to know if you seek God

  619. first. Is Sunday church something you

  620. look forward to and plan on when you

  621. leave Sunday church on Sunday. You leave

  622. today. I hope you already have made

  623. plans to be back next week. And you

  624. know, it would probably not hurt many of

  625. us if we just went ahead and made plans

  626. to come back in the middle of the week.

  627. Come back on Wednesday night, too, and

  628. let's get a little midweek boost. Let's

  629. get a little shot in the arm. Let's

  630. fellowship with the church a little bit,

  631. cuz I want to put God first in my life.

  632. Nothing else matters outside of God

  633. coming first. I want to seek God first

  634. in my family. I want to seek God first

  635. in my life. I'm going to follow what he

  636. has said. Who are you following this

  637. morning? Here's the problem. And we'll

  638. move on to the next point because I

  639. think I've hit enough things.

  640. We want to see God move. And we all

  641. raised our hand. I think every hand went

  642. up in this building just a moment ago

  643. and said, "Yes, I want to see God do

  644. great things. Yes, I want to see the

  645. power of God." But here's the problem.

  646. Can I just be blunt? We would love to

  647. see God do a miracle, but we're not

  648. willing to follow God like he's asked us

  649. to follow him.

  650. We want God to meet us on our terms

  651. and we want to do things our way and we

  652. want to prioritize, but we want to

  653. prioritize and we want to parent our way

  654. and we want to have our finances go our

  655. way and we want to treat our marriage

  656. our own way and we want to come up with

  657. our own rules and we want to do our own

  658. thing and then we still want God to go

  659. ahead and pour out the blessings on us

  660. and go ahead and give us all that we're

  661. asking for. And can I tell you if you

  662. live like that, if you expect that,

  663. you're going to miss the miracle.

  664. Number two, though, not only do we need

  665. to follow God, put down number two. How

  666. are we supposed to see God do great

  667. things, we know he can do it again, we

  668. know he's able, he's done it in the

  669. past, and by faith, we think he can do

  670. it again. How do we see it? Well, number

  671. two, we must be faithful to God. I'll go

  672. very quickly here.

  673. The people obeyed exactly what God

  674. commanded them to do. Look at verse 14

  675. and verse 15. And it came to pass when

  676. the people were moved from the tents to

  677. pass over Jordan, the priests bearing

  678. the ark of the covenant before the

  679. people, and as they had bare the ark

  680. were come unto Jordan, and the feet of

  681. the priests that bear the ark were

  682. dipped in to the brim of the water, for

  683. the Jordan overflowth its banks at the

  684. time of harvest. What did they do? Well,

  685. God gave them instruction. We read about

  686. that a moment ago. Now, they come to the

  687. bank of the Jordan River. Who steps in

  688. first? It's the priest. It's the people

  689. that God said. They did it according to

  690. God's order. They did it according to

  691. God's plan. And God blessed because they

  692. obeyed. If we want to see God do great

  693. things in our church, if we want to see

  694. God do great things in our family, if we

  695. want to see God come through and do

  696. great miracles, and we want to see God

  697. bring revivals like days going days of

  698. old, and we want to see the power of

  699. God, we have got to make a decision not

  700. just to know what God has said, but to

  701. obey what God has said. That my

  702. commitment is to God first. And how he

  703. says to do it, that's how I'm going to

  704. do it. I will give you an example, an

  705. illustration of how this plays out in a

  706. local church and you can apply it to

  707. your personal life as the Holy Spirit

  708. leads.

  709. What if when Joshua stands up and he

  710. communicates to the people,

  711. this is what God has said. So, we are

  712. going to do what God has said and the

  713. priests are going to step into the water

  714. of the Jordan River that's overflowing

  715. its banks and and the water's going to

  716. part and God's going to do a great

  717. miracle. priest, you just got to go in

  718. the front. You got to go before. We're

  719. going to follow God. You're going to

  720. step in and the water is going to part.

  721. What if when Joshua explains all this,

  722. what if Caleb jumped up? I'm just going

  723. to pick on Caleb. This is not in the

  724. Bible. This is not what happened. It's a

  725. what if because I'm I'm making a case

  726. for something. Caleb jumps up and says,

  727. "Wait a minute.

  728. That's not how God did it at the Red

  729. Sea.

  730. When we Joshua, you remember when we

  731. went to the Red Sea, it wasn't it wasn't

  732. the priest going in first. Moses Moses

  733. stood there and he raised his rod up and

  734. and you remember that Joshua Moses put

  735. his rod up in the air and when Moses put

  736. his rod up in the air then the waters

  737. parted. That's how God did it back then.

  738. So I think that's what we should do now.

  739. We should just do it the same way.

  740. Worked fine back then. We'll just do it

  741. the same way today and and hope

  742. everything continues to work out fine.

  743. What if Caleb would have said that? And

  744. what if Joshua would have walked to the

  745. edge of the water and instead of having

  746. the priest go first and put their feet

  747. in, what if Joshua just stood there with

  748. his rod in the air waiting on the

  749. mirror? Do you think God would have

  750. parted the Jordan River?

  751. I doubt it

  752. because God gave them specific

  753. instructions for this time.

  754. And a lot of times in local churches,

  755. especially small ones like this, we look

  756. at how God did things in the past, and

  757. we think we got to do it the exact same

  758. way today.

  759. We think, well, that's how God did it

  760. back there, so that must be the only way

  761. to do it right here. Ignoring the fact

  762. that this is a completely new generation

  763. of people standing on the Jordan River,

  764. right?

  765. Completely new generation,

  766. similar culture, but very different, new

  767. people, new families.

  768. And God said, "I'm going to give you a

  769. new way. I'm going to do the same

  770. miracle, but I'm going to give you a new

  771. way, a new commandment to obey." And God

  772. led them into doing something that was

  773. new. What if Caleb had said Joshua, and

  774. I mean we can make a good case here,

  775. okay? If this happened, Caleb would have

  776. a good case. Think about it. The river

  777. is very dangerous. You do not want to

  778. put a priest who's bearing the weight of

  779. the ark of the covenant and and he's on

  780. this shoreline and he's trying to step

  781. into a rushing, raging river that this

  782. is dangerous. Somebody's going to get

  783. hurt. Somebody's going to die. The ark

  784. of the covenant could get swept away.

  785. This is not safe, Joshua. I think it

  786. would be better to just do what we've

  787. always done. Just stand there with your

  788. rod up and let's just wait and see if

  789. God will if God will do that.

  790. And many churches do something very

  791. similar.

  792. God, that's how you did it back there.

  793. And now you're calling us to do

  794. something that seems maybe

  795. uncomfortable, that's out of our comfort

  796. zone, that that doesn't seem like it's

  797. going to work very good. And and we

  798. don't understand what you're doing. So,

  799. we just think we're going to stick to

  800. what we know. we're going to stick to

  801. what we're comfortable with and we're

  802. just going to ask that that you just do

  803. what you need to do. And the problem is

  804. when we don't follow God, when we're not

  805. willing to take steps of faith, when

  806. we're not willing to do what God's

  807. called us to do,

  808. God doesn't do great miracles.

  809. And we get stuck in a religious routine.

  810. And there are hundreds of thousands of

  811. churches this morning who do the same

  812. exact thing because that's what they've

  813. always done.

  814. They come in and they have a service and

  815. they leave and they go get lunch and

  816. they go through motions

  817. and they're not willing to change

  818. anything.

  819. Well, that's just what we've always done

  820. and we're not comfortable doing anything

  821. different. God told him a very specific

  822. thing. The ark goes first, the priests

  823. step in. But that's not how you did it

  824. before. God doesn't matter. It's a new

  825. generation. It's a new sea. I need to do

  826. a new miracle. And I need to see if

  827. you'll obey. So get out of the comfort

  828. zone and just obey God. And and I'm just

  829. going to throw this in here.

  830. As as your pastor, I am not interested

  831. in the very least in tradition for

  832. tradition's sake. In fact, if someone

  833. tells me that the reason they don't want

  834. to change something is because we've

  835. never done it that way,

  836. I I take that as advice that it's time

  837. to go ahead and change. Okay? We're

  838. changing. Why? Because tradition, for

  839. tradition's sake, will stunt the growth

  840. of a church.

  841. There's a new generation out there. I'm

  842. not I'm not negating what God may have

  843. done in the past, even in this very

  844. place. But there's a new generation out

  845. there that we have to reach. And we've

  846. got to find a way to connect with them.

  847. And if that means we got to change some

  848. things, if that means we've got to do

  849. things a little bit differently, if that

  850. means we've got to get uncomfortable,

  851. I'm willing to do that because I follow

  852. God and God alone. Does this make sense

  853. to everybody? Now, that's the church

  854. illustration. That's how it applies to

  855. us as a group. You take it and you pray

  856. about it and you ask the Holy Spirit how

  857. that applies to you personally. Because

  858. sometimes we need to change things in

  859. our personal life and do things that

  860. we've never done. But God's calling us

  861. to step out and do things for him. And

  862. it might be a little uncomfortable and

  863. it might not be what you have chosen,

  864. but if God's asking you to do it, I

  865. would I would advise obey God. Be

  866. faithful to him. Number three, I got to

  867. move along. I've taken way too much time

  868. already. Number three,

  869. have faith in God. So if we're going to

  870. see God do great miracles, we have to

  871. first of all follow him. We have to

  872. second of all be faithful to him. Number

  873. three, we've got to have faith that he's

  874. going to come through.

  875. A step into a raging river is what

  876. initiated God's great miracle. If the

  877. priest had never taken the step, they

  878. had walked to the edge. The water was

  879. raging. It was deep and it was fast and

  880. it was scary. and they got to the edge

  881. and they said, "Nah, no, I don't think

  882. so. Not me. Joshua, pick another priest.

  883. That's not This is not my job."

  884. They wouldn't have seen the miracle. It

  885. took a step of complete faith. I don't

  886. think their foot got to the bottom

  887. before the water was gone. It was a

  888. miracle, but they had to get it wet.

  889. They had to initiate the step and just

  890. trust that God was going to do what he

  891. was going to do. And that's what you and

  892. I have to do in our life. Just trust

  893. that God's going to do what he has said

  894. he's going to do and take steps of faith

  895. that if I can say it this way without

  896. being theologically incorrect. Put God

  897. on the spot

  898. and say, "God, you have called us to do

  899. this and it's uncomfortable and

  900. sometimes it doesn't really make sense,

  901. but I'm going to take the step of faith

  902. and put you on the spot and just see if

  903. you come through. Lord, you have taught

  904. us in your word to do this with our

  905. finances, to give a tithe of our

  906. finances, and I've never given a tithe.

  907. And that seems really uncomfortable for

  908. me to give 10% of my income to the

  909. ministry of a local church and I I that

  910. makes me cringe and I don't like that

  911. and I'm uncomfortable with that. But but

  912. if that's what the Bible says, I'm going

  913. to follow you. So I'll just take the

  914. step of faith. I'll do it. But you

  915. better come through. You better show me

  916. that this is right and put God on the

  917. spot by just taking a step of faith.

  918. Obedience always comes first. The

  919. miracle follows obedience. You and I

  920. have got to be willing to just take

  921. steps of faith. What is God calling you

  922. to do?

  923. What has the Holy Spirit laid on your

  924. life? And you feel that nudging that

  925. it's time to step out. It's time to do

  926. this or it's time to do that. It's time

  927. to be more involved in your local church

  928. or it's it's time to be more involved

  929. with your family or or it's time to give

  930. maybe or it's it's time maybe for you to

  931. find a ministry to serve in or whatever

  932. it is that the Holy Spirit is leading

  933. you to do. And right now you're sitting

  934. there thinking, "Pastor John, just move

  935. on. I don't want to think about it. I

  936. don't want you to talk about it anymore.

  937. It it makes me uncomfortable. Well, I

  938. don't like the way I feel right now.

  939. That's the Holy Spirit nudging you,

  940. saying, "Hey, it's time. Take a step of

  941. faith. Just do what God is asking you to

  942. do. I want to see miracles." You just

  943. testified that you want to see miracles.

  944. How are we going to see God's power when

  945. God's people decide to take a step of

  946. faith?

  947. You with me?

  948. Okay. George Mueller was a he was a

  949. pastor. He was a preacher. He was a

  950. writer. He ran orphanages

  951. and you can read about George Mueller.

  952. He's got a great testimony. George

  953. Mueller is known as a man of faith.

  954. There's a story that is told of George

  955. Mueller one morning receiving word from

  956. his aid that he was running an orphanage

  957. of at the time had over 300 students in

  958. it. His aid came to him and said, "Mr.

  959. Mueller, we are completely out of bread

  960. this morning. We are completely out of

  961. milk this morning. I have nothing to

  962. feed these children. We have 300 kids

  963. who are hungry. I have nothing to give

  964. them. Mr. Mueller said, "Go down, get

  965. them seated at their tables. I'll be

  966. down in a moment." And so the the aid

  967. went down, the maid went down. She got

  968. everything prepared and had all all of

  969. the students seated in the dining room.

  970. And Mr. Mueller came down after getting

  971. ready and he sat down at the head of the

  972. table and he bowed his head and he

  973. prayed and he said, "Thank you, Lord,

  974. for this food that you've set before us.

  975. I thank you Lord for the milk that you

  976. have provided for us. And I pray that

  977. you'd take this meal you'd make in a

  978. nourishment to our bodies that you would

  979. fill us for your kingdom.

  980. He finished praying. He said Jesus name.

  981. Amen. He finished praying and looked up

  982. and there was nothing.

  983. The children maybe a little bit

  984. inquisitical or like what is going on

  985. today? This is strange. No food today.

  986. And he's praying like there's food but

  987. there's nothing here. They sat there for

  988. a little bit and just waited.

  989. And after just a short while, there was

  990. a knock on the door. Mr. Mueller went to

  991. the door. He answered the door of the

  992. orphanage and there was a baker standing

  993. at the door and he said, "I could not

  994. sleep last night. The Lord woke me up

  995. several times and told me I needed to

  996. bake some bread for you." He said, "That

  997. doesn't make any sense to me why in the

  998. world I needed to bake bread for you.

  999. But I was up all night last night.

1000. Decided to just go ahead and bake you

1001. some bread. So, here I am. I've got cart

1002. full of bread out here. you can have it

1003. if you need it. And Mr. Mueller was

1004. like, "Yes, thank you. We could

1005. definitely use the bread this morning."

1006. So, they bring it in. They're fixing the

  1007. children's plates and they're giving

1008. them a piece of bread to eat for

1009. breakfast. And there's another knock on

1010. the door. And uh he went, Mr. Mueller

1011. went to the door and he opened the door

1012. and there's a milkman standing at the

  1013. door.

1014. The milkman said, "I uh I was doing my

1015. my route, just running my route

1016. delivering milk this morning. My cart

1017. broke down right right across the road

1018. in the ditch. and by the time I get

1019. somebody here to fix the cart, the

1020. milk's all going to be spoiled. So, I

1021. just thought I'd ask and see if you

1022. could use some milk this morning. And

1023. Mr. Mueller said, "Yes, we can.

1024. Absolutely." And the amount of milk that

1025. was on his car was just the right amount

1026. for 300 kids to have breakfast that

  1027. morning.

  1028. It's a great story

1029. of how God came through because one man

  1030. had faith.

1031. We're just going to take the step of

1032. faith. We're going to go ahead and pray.

1033. We're going to just trust that God's

1034. going to provide, that God's going to

1035. come through, and God did it then. And

1036. this morning, I want to tell you, God

1037. can do it again. We serve the same God

1038. today that Mr. Mueller served back then.

1039. So, have faith in God. What are you

1040. asking God for? What do you need to see

1041. God do in your life? Just trust that

1042. God's going to do what he has said he

1043. will do and take a step of faith. Put

1044. God on the spot and watch God come

1045. through. Let me give you one more point.

1046. You can come to the piano, dear. We're

  1047. finished.

1048. How are we going to see God do great

1049. things in our life? Well, number one,

  1050. follow God. Number two,

1051. be faithful to God. Number three, have

1052. faith in God. Number four, write this

  1053. down. Commit

1054. to the family of God.

1055. There is something to be said for

  1056. community.

1057. There is something to be said for people

1058. who work together to see God do

  1059. something.

1060. I showed it to you when we read the text

1061. a little bit ago and I said I'm going to

1062. come back to this verse, the very last

1063. verse in the text. There's two words. It

1064. said two times in the last verse, Joshua

1065. 3. All the priests, the priests that

1066. bear the ark of the covenant of the Lord

1067. stood firm on dry ground in the midst of

1068. the Jordan River. And here's the word,

  1069. all

  1070. the Israelites passed over

  1071. until

1072. all the people were passed clean over.

1073. There is an application in here that I I

1074. don't have time this morning or the

1075. energy this morning to try and and give

1076. you how I want to give it to you.

1077. But I'm going to let the Holy Spirit do

1078. the work and I'm just going to give you

  1079. the basics.

  1080. You need

  1081. one another.

1082. A church was never meant to be

1083. individuals alone. A church is

1084. individuals who are together. Now, I

  1085. know there's a distinction and a

1086. difference between the church today and

1087. the Israelites nation on the banks of

1088. the Jordan River, but the application is

  1089. the same. Everybody

1090. went over. Everybody was a part of the

1091. miracle. Everybody got to see what God

1092. was doing. They did it together. It

1093. wasn't just one man saying, "Hey, we're

1094. going to do this. I'm I'm going to swim

1095. across today." By the way, people had

1096. had swam across one or two guys. You

1097. remember the two spies that went over in

1098. the last chapter? They went over into

1099. Rahab's house and they spied out the

1100. land. They had gotten across. They were

1101. strong men. They were physical,

1102. physically fit men and spies for the

1103. land of Israel. And they had managed to

1104. find a way to get across this raging

1105. river. But it was impossible for a whole

1106. nation to get across. The spies didn't

1107. just stay over there and say, "Wow, this

1108. is wonderful. We'll just hide in Rahab's

1109. house and just enjoy the fruit of the

1110. land and this will be great." No, no,

1111. no, no, no. Cuz together there is a

1112. miracle waiting. And you can go outside

1113. this church this morning and you can try

1114. your very best to fight on your own. And

1115. you can try to go out here and figure

1116. out how you're going to live the

1117. victorious Christian life on your own.

1118. And you can go out and you can spy out

1119. the land, so to speak. And and you can

1120. be so full of yourself and think, "I

  1121. don't need a church. I don't need no

  1122. Christians. I don't need nobody praying

1123. for me. I've got this under control."

1124. And you will be defeated.

1125. But if you will connect arms with

1126. somebody else, if you will lock in with

1127. a local church, with a group of people,

1128. just a small group of people here this

1129. morning who love you, who care about

1130. you, who are praying for you, and you

1131. say, "I want to see God do something."

1132. And you want to see God do something.

1133. Why don't we get together and let's pray

1134. together and let's ask God to do

  1135. something.

1136. Hey, hey, I've been struggling with a

1137. sin. I'm not been staying faithful to

1138. God. Would you help me, brother? Would

1139. you help me, sister? I want to be

1140. faithful. I want to be obedient cuz I

1141. want to see God do something and I need

1142. some accountability here. Be honest

1143. enough, be humble enough to find some

1144. help if you need help this morning. Oh,

1145. I've been following the culture and

1146. following all this other stuff today. I

1147. want I want to follow God, but I don't

1148. know if I can do it on my own. Hey, why

1149. don't you just find somebody this

1150. morning and before you leave and say,

1151. "Hey, would you help me stay just stay

1152. in touch with God? Can can we just share

1153. devotions every day? Maybe I I want to

1154. know what God has. I want to see God

  1155. move.

1156. We're going to do this together."

1157. What's it say? Joshua, what's the whole

  1158. book of Joshua about?

  1159. a life of victory.

1160. But do not get the wrong idea and think

1161. that you can have a life of victory on

  1162. your own.

1163. You need the local church. You need

1164. God's people to go over with you or the

1165. devil will make short work of your life.

  1166. There's always a a sign that a Christian

1167. is falling away from the Lord.

1168. And it bothers me when I see this.

1169. But when someone begins to find reasons

  1170. to miss church,

1171. I I begin to pray extra hard for that

1172. person because inevitably they are

1173. backsliding away from God. It's the

  1174. first I I believe it's the first visible

1175. sign that someone is falling away from

1176. God is that they no longer prioritize

1177. church. Why might that be the case?

1178. Because they don't they get away from

  1179. the community.

1180. They no longer want that help. They they

1181. no longer want to be honest. They no

1182. longer want to be humble. They no longer

1183. want to pray with someone. They they

1184. want to try and stand on their own two

1185. feet. And so they begin to distance

1186. themselves from God's people. And when

1187. you distance yourself from God's people,

1188. the devil makes short work of you. And

1189. that person who distances himself from

1190. God's church, distances himself from

1191. God's people, tries to stand and do it

1192. all by himself, he won't see no

  1193. miracles.

1194. In fact, mo most likely, more often than

1195. not, he'll end up in some sin

1196. outside of the will of God completely

1197. for his life. He'll wake up one morning

1198. and he'll say, "What have I done? How

  1199. did I get here?

  1200. This isn't who I am. I'm saved. I'm a

1201. Christian. I've not been to church in

1202. months. I haven't read my Bible in

1203. months. I I don't even know how to pray

1204. anymore. I'm caught up in sin and

1205. different things, and I've have all

1206. these struggles." And God, what

  1207. happened?

1208. You tried to go on your own

1209. and you got away from the family of God,

1210. the people who love you, the people who

1211. are praying for you, the community that

1212. I gave you, and you tried to do it your

  1213. own self.

1214. And church, this morning, I want to

1215. leave you with this thought. If we want

1216. to see God do a miracle in this place,

1217. we're going to have to do it together.

1218. I'm praying for miracles in almost every

1219. every face that I'm looking at this

1220. morning. I pray for you

1221. and I pray that God would give your

1222. life, your marriage, your children a

1223. miracle. That God's power would rest on

1224. your family, on your life.

1225. And as your pastor, as honestly as I

1226. know how to say this,

  1227. can I challenge you? Don't you Don't you

  1228. dare leave me

  1229. lovingly.

1230. Don't you dare walk out there and say,

  1231. "I don't need that man anymore. I'll

1232. keep praying for you, but that's going

1233. to hurt. It doesn't hurt me. I'll keep

1234. praying for you. I'm staying here until

1235. unless God moves. I'm staying right

  1236. here. I ain't going nowhere. You're

  1237. stuck with me, friends.

1238. It's going to hurt you, though.

1239. And it breaks my heart.

  1240. It breaks my heart

1241. to see people that I love, people that I

1242. pray for who say, "I don't need that

1243. anymore. I'm okay on my own." Because

1244. according to the Bible, and this is just

1245. a this is an example of it, but it's all

1246. through scripture. You and I need each

  1247. other.

1248. God divinely created the local church.

1249. And part of the local church purpose is

1250. to help one another. And I can't I got

1251. to be honest. I I can't tell you why the

1252. Lord has emphasized this so much in our

1253. church in the last month or so, but he

  1254. has.

1255. And I think that perhaps it's because

1256. God is wanting to build a group of

1257. people who love each other enough to

  1258. stick it out.

1259. Who care about one another enough to

1260. say, "We're in this thing.

  1261. We're a community."

1262. No, no, no. Excuse me. We're a family.

1263. And this morning, I am so glad to be a

1264. part of the family of God.

1265. And this morning, I want to see God do

1266. great works in his family. And I wonder

  1267. if you do, too.

1268. Are you willing to follow him? Are you

1269. going to be faithful to him? Will you

  1270. have faith in him?

1271. And maybe this morning, you just need to

1272. bow down here and say, "God, I commit to

  1273. the family.

  1274. I'm in. I ain't going nowhere.

1275. I need help and you've given me a church

1276. that was willing to help me.

  1277. Let's all stand this morning. She's

  1278. playing on the piano.

  1279. We've we've covered a lot of topics this

1280. morning. We went a long a long way.

  1281. We've covered a lot of ground. And I

1282. don't know exactly what it was in this

1283. message that spoke to you, but I know

1284. that when you preach a message that

1285. covers a lot of ground, everybody gets

1286. touched one way or another.

1287. So, here's what I'm going to invite you

1288. to do. This morning, I feel the Holy

1289. Spirit this morning. I just be honest. I

1290. need to pray this morning as your

  1291. pastor.

1292. So, while she plays, I'm going to kneel

1293. down right here on this altar

1294. and I'm going to pray.

1295. I'm going to invite you to join me

1296. around an oldfashioned altar in

  1297. humility,

1298. the best way we know how, and say, "God,

1299. we're calling on you to come through.

1300. Whatever the situation is, whatever the

1301. need is, God, calling on you come

  1302. through."

1303. Hey church, God can do it again. Would

1304. you come this morning? Let's ask God to

  1305. help us.
