”Testify!” | Pastor John Tilley Jr | Sun AM | Joshua 4

The title of the message today is just

one word. Last week we preached on the

word remember.

And today we're going to preach on the

word testify.

Testify. Here's what we know. There is a

world outside of these walls that you

and I are in this morning who need to

hear how great our God is. Outside of

these walls, there's a world of people.

There's a community of people. There are

neighbors who are our our neighbors who

are people. All outside of these walls

in our community and in our

neighborhoods and in our workplaces and

in the stores that we go into, there are

people who need to hear how great our

God is.

There's a mama who's struggling to hold

it all together and she needs to hear a

testimony of how God helped you. There's

an addict out there who needs to hear

how God can deliver them. There's a dad

out there who needs to know that God is

still able to be his strength. There's a

grandma or a grandpa out there who are

praying for their grandkids who need to

hear again how powerful God is. There's

a neighbor who needs to hear about our

God's mercy and grace. There's a

co-orker who needs to hear about love

and compassion of Jesus. There's a

friend who needs to see the joy of Jesus

overflowing from you. There's a hurting

Christian who needs to hear about God's

restoring power. There's a child who

needs to hear those Sunday school

lessons one more time from God's amazing

word. There is a world outside of these

walls and they need to hear how great

our God is.

How are they going to hear? How are they

going to know?

They will know through the testimonies

of God's people. They will know through

the testimonies of the church. Look at

Joshua chapter 4. Look at verse 23 and

Joshua 4 · chapter mention

24. We'll read the text. I'll give you

some context and then most of the

message today will be application. Look

at verse 23. For the Lord your God dried

up the waters of Jordan from before you

until you were passed over as the Lord

your God did to the Red Sea which he

dried up from before us until we were

gone over. that all of the people of the

earth might know the hand of the Lord. I

want I want to read that phrase one more

time. You see that in your Bible? That

all the people of the earth might know

the hand of the Lord. Let's say it all

together. You've got it in your Bible.

I've got it in mine. Let's all say it

out loud together here. Here we go.

Verse 24. That all the people of the

earth might know the hand of the Lord.

that it is mighty that you might fear

the Lord your God forever. We come back

to Joshua chapter 4 and we understand

Joshua 4 · chapter mention

the context uh from last week. We spent

a great deal of time framing this

chapter and walking through this chapter

and and looking at what they have done.

They've come across the Jordan River.

God parted the waters. They come across

on dry ground and they're now entering

into the land of Canaan. They've waited

for 500 years to claim this land. Uh,

this generation has waited for their

whole life to claim this land. And now

it's finally time to go into what we

call the promised land. It's time for

them to go into that land that God had

promised them, that God had given them,

that land of Canaan.

But before they do anything, before they

go any farther, before they set foot

into this land, before they start

battling Jericho or Ai or the other

battles that we'll read about in the

coming weeks, before they do any of

those things, God tells them to pause.

Wait a moment. There's something I'd

like for you to do. And he tells them to

construct two altars. One on the west

bank of the Jordan River and one in the

midst of the Jordan River. And we talked

about those two altars and what they

mean and why God told him to construct

them last week. And this week we come to

the end of the chapter and we're just

going to look at these two verses

and what these altars are. They are

meant in part to help the nation of

Israel remember their God. That's where

we focused last week. But they're also

built as a way to be a testimony.

They're a testimony to those people who

did not come across the Jordan River.

It's a testimony to the city of Jericho

that when they look down from the top of

their wall and they look out across the

plane and they see that mound of rocks

standing on the west bank of the Jordan

River, they're immediately reminded of

the hand of the Lord.

It's a testimony to all of the

Canaanites who live in the land of

Canaan that God is a miracle working

God. that God has a mighty hand. That's

straight out of verse 24. It's a

testimony.

It's a testimony.

Last week, we talked about these two

altars and how they are a calling. They

tell us to remember what God has done

for us. There's three reasons that we

gave and I just want to remind you of

them for context sake. We straight from

the text, we saw that we must remember

what God has done. First of all, for the

sake of our children. Second of all, for

the season of crisis that we will all go

through. And then third, for the

seriousness of the conflict because

there is an enemy and there is a battle

that will take place. So we must

remember what God has done. But the

these altars are not just for memorials.

And a lot of times churches get stuck in

a rut of tradition because they have

erected a memorial and it's just a

memorial. Well, it's always been there.

We've always done that and it's just a

pile of rocks. It's just a memorial. And

we must remember what God has done for

us. But we must remember and we must

also testify.

We must tell someone about how great our

God is. I want to show you five specific

things from this text. Five testimonies.

Now, here's the deal I'll make with you

this morning. I'm going to preach these

real fast

as long as you give me some feedback.

Okay. If I don't see no smiles, if I

don't hear no amens, if I don't get no

feedback, you just sit there like a bump

on the log. I'm going to go back and

preach them over and over and over and

we'll be here till 2 o'clock this

afternoon. All right, y'all with me?

Here's what I'd like to do this morning.

These are five testimonies that come

straight out of these two verses. And I

would like to preach them this morning

as my testimony to you. I want to give

you an example. You don't have to be

this animated. You don't have to be this

crazy. You don't have to talk this fast

when you do it. But these are five

testimonies that you can go outside of

these doors with and you can tell

somebody about these five things about

your God. Are you ready? Put down number

one. We testify about his provision.

Look at verse 23.

For the Lord your God dried up the

waters of the Jordan from before you.

The Lord dried up the waters of the

Jordan. There is provision in that

statement. Here stands the nation of

Israel looking back at was just a moment

ago a rushing river overflowing its

banks completely impassible. There was

no way to get across. And now they stand

on the other side looking back over this

riverbed that moments ago was rushing

overflowing its banks. Impassable now as

dry as the Sahara Desert. There's no

water in it. There's no mud in it. It's

not sloshy. It's not sticky. It's dry

all the way across. And as they stand on

the west bank and before they go any

farther into the promised land, they

construct an altar as they're looking

over this dried up riverbed completely

dry. And it's a testimony that God

provided for them. What they needed,

what they were facing, God came through.

And friends, this morning I've come to

tell you that whatever river you are

standing at the foot of right now,

whatever river it is in your life,

whatever mountain there is in your life,

whatever valley you're going through in

your life, whatever storm of your life

that you're facing, you use whatever

analogy you want to, when you're

standing there and you're looking at it

and you're thinking, "There's no way we

get across this. There's no way we get

through this. There's no way we come

over the other side of this. This is not

going to work out good. This is not

going to end well. There's a rushing

river before you. I serve a God who can

part the river and make the ground

underneath completely dry. I serve a God

who can provide exactly what you need

when you need it. We serve a providing

God. And somebody out there needs to

hear it from you that your God provides

for you.

>> Can I give you some examples this

morning?

right now. Right now in this very

moment, as far as I know, unless

something is broken, we are live on

YouTube

right now. Yeah, that's a praise. Guess

what? It didn't cost the church hardly

any money at all to buy a a very nice

camera, set up everything, do all of

this. Why? Because God provided.

Where God guides, he provides. Where God

takes you, he's going to make a way. We

are getting ready to start a $15,000

building project right here in our

church. We're going to put in a new AC

unit in the next couple of weeks. A

brand new AC unit, heat pump. We're

putting in a natural gas stove burner to

heat the building in the winter time.

It's a $15,000 project. We're going to

pay cash for it. When they're done with

it, we have the money in the bank right

now. All of it. Why? Because we serve a

God who provides. You say, "Where'd the

money come from?" I can't tell you. I

really don't know who gave it. I just

saw it show up in the bank account.

Somebody felt led of God to give some

money to a church who had a project

going on. You say, "Well, that's just

coincidence." It's not coincidence. It's

a God who provides for his people. And

every time I look at my life, every time

there's been a need, every time there's

been a river, every time there's been a

mountain, every time I felt in a valley,

every time there was a great need in my

life, I serve a God who has come through

every single time. God provide. And we

ought not be ashamed of the fact that

God is the one who provides for us.

Don't be ashamed. Don't be bashful in

giving him the credit that he deserves

for providing for his people. He's a God

who provides for us.

Number two,

not only do we testify that he is a God

who provides, but I want you to write

this down. We testify that he is a God

who protects. Number two, his

protection.

Now, notice what it says in verse 23.

Very simple, straight from the text. For

the Lord your God dried up the waters of

Jordan from before you until you were

passed over. Now, that's a little bitty

statement that we read over. But think

about the alternative. Think about if

that was not true. God parts the waters

like he did at the Red Sea and and half

the nation gets over and just like God

did at the Red Sea when the Egyptians

got in the middle, the second half of

the nation of Israel gets on the Jordan

River and all of a sudden here comes the

waters back. What a catastrophe that

would have been. I mean, there's they're

standing in harm's way. This rushing

river, you imagine when it does come

flowing back, how fast it's coming back.

Can you imagine how swift this thing is

going to flow back into place? Imagine

if God didn't protect them by holding

back the walls, by holding back the

waters, by pushing things back and say,

"Hey, we're going to go across on dry

ground." And then he just throws in this

little statement, just a few words.

Until everybody's over, I'm going to

protect all of you. We're going to make

sure everybody gets safely across. And I

am thankful this morning for God's

protection in my life.

I'm thankful this morning that God has

protected me. You know you're here this

morning. You are right here in this

place in that seat this morning only

only because God has protected you. You

could be in a hundred other places, but

you serve a God who protected you and

got you here this morning. And you're

here and you're healthy and you're alive

and you're breathing God's air

cuz God protects his people. And

somebody out there needs to know that

the people in the church, the people who

call themselves the church, the people

who say they love God, we have a

testimony that our God has protected us.

Even when things get bad and

circumstances are uncomfortable, think

about this now. Even when things are

uncomfortable, the doctor gives you news

that you don't want, the situation is

dark and and and you you don't know

what's going on and you wonder what's

happening and and things don't seem like

like they should be. Even in those

moments, I can have peace. Because

imagine how bad it would be if God

wasn't holding back the waters in that

moment. Imagine how much worse things

could be if God wasn't there protecting

his people. You see, in in it all,

through it all, God takes care of you

and I. Put down number three.

Number one, his provision. Number two,

his p uh number two, his protection.

Number three, his persistence.

Look at verse 23 again. For the Lord

your God dried up before you until you

were passed over Jordan. And then he

says this, as the Lord your God did to

the Red Sea, which he dried up uh from

before us until we were gone over

from the Red Sea all the way to the

Jordan River

near almost 40 years of time. From that

moment to this moment, every single day,

God persistently supplied for the needs

of his people. Think about it. They wake

up every morning, there's no food. They

start to grumble and complain, "God,

what are we supposed to eat out here in

the desert?" They wake up the next

morning, mana on the ground,

heavenly honey buns laying all over the

place. And they just wake up and start

eating. And every morning, every morning

they wake up, there they are. Mana

laying all over the ground.

Well, they get upset about that and they

start complaining, "God, well, you got

to give us some meat to eat. We can't

just eat heavenly honey buns all the

time. We got to have some substance."

They wake up the next morning, there's

quail. So many quail, you can't even

walk through the camp. There's quail

just dead everywhere, fresh. They cook

them up. They eat meat. Oh god, we don't

have nothing to drink. What'd you do?

Bring us out here into the desert just

to let us thirst to death. We don't have

nothing to drink. Moses goes over and

hits a rock and water start it becomes a

fountain and water starts coming out of

the rock. I mean a miracle God

persistently providing for his people.

Every day they wake up. Every day

there's mercy's new. Every day they wake

up there's grace that's new. Every day

that they wake up, God's provided

something else for them. Persistently

following them from the Red Sea all the

way to the Jordan River. And they're

testifying here in verse 23. They say,

"God, all the way back there, you took

care of us. And right now, you're taking

care of us. And all the days in between,

you have taken care of us. You have

provided for us. You have given us the

grace and the mercy and the protection

and the provision that we need. You have

persistently followed us from the Red

Sea even to then even to now. God was

good to them with the mana. God was good

to them with the quail. God was good to

them when water came from a rock. God

was good to them when they complained

and murmured. God was good to them when

they sinned. God was good to them when

they did not deserve it. God des good to

them even when they didn't want God to

be good to them. God still poured out

blessings on them over and over and over

and over and over and over and over

again. God's goodness pursued after

them. I can imagine them if the song had

been written. I imagine them standing on

the west bank of the Jordan River

thinking about the last 40 years and

perhaps they would have begun to sing,

"All my life you have been faithful. All

my life you have been so so good." And

they maybe they just skipped right on

ahead to the bridge part and they began

to sing, "Your goodness is running after

running after me. You've been chasing us

this whole time. We tried to abandon

you. We tried to run from you. We tried

to forget you. We tried to complain and

murmur. But from that day until this

day, our God has persistently pursued

us. His goodness has been running after

us. David would write years later when

he pinned Psalm 23, the last verse he

wrote. Surely goodness and mercy shall

follow me all the days of my life. There

is a God in heaven who persistently

pursues his people with goodness. And

somebody out there needs to hear it from

somebody in here that my God has been

faithful for my whole life. That doesn't

mean things never got difficult. That

doesn't mean things never got got

uncomfortable. Oh no, there's trials and

there's there's troubles and there's

storms and there are things that we go

through. Sure, we understand that.

But all my life he's been faithful. All

my life he's been so so good

persistently

following his people.

Can I give you a just a simple

application for me personally

and I think you could apply this too to

your life. I look back over my life as a

I grew up in a Christian home. I've been

in church. I was in church nine months

before I was born. I I have been in

church my whole life. We would go to

church multiple times a day, many days

of the week. And and this is all I've

ever known. And and as I look back over

my life, I I can look and I can see God

has been so good

to this guy right here.

Very practically, every time I was

hungry, there was food. Every time I was

thirsty, there was drink. Every time I

had a need, God provided. Every time I I

struggled, God was my peace. Every time

I look at my life and I look at I can

think back to the college days when I

was in college and undergrad and I

remember getting the bill in the mailbox

and it says so much money is due by this

date or you can't take your final exams

and I didn't have the money.

And I remember how God provided. I

remember God doing different things, all

kinds of different things. I've had

checks just show up in the mailbox. I've

got stories like that. I I went and

checked my mailbox one time in college

and and had to pay money and opened it

up and there was a check. I have no idea

to this day who sent it. Had no name on

it. It was just an amount, just a

number. Deposited that check, paid the

bill. God provided

persistently following us. You know what

that tells me? You know what that tells

me? If God has been with me my whole

life up to this point and on this year

2026

spiritually I turned 20 years old this

year my 20th and this fall

if God's been with me for the last 20

years

then I can mark it down. He's going to

keep following me. He's going to keep

pursuing me. He's going to keep running

after me. He's going to keep being

persistent with his goodness in my life.

He's been so good already. that gives me

anticipation and excitement to look

forward to what the future might hold

because he's going to still be good. He

said, "I will never leave thee nor

forsake thee. I will never leave thee or

forsake thee. I'm never going to leave

you abandoned. I'm always going to come

through."

I'm so thankful for every time I prayed,

he answered me. When I looked up, he

showed himself to me. When I needed

comfort, he was there. When I needed

peace, he was there. When I needed help,

he was there. When I failed him, he

forgave me. When I've been discouraged,

he encouraged me. When I backslid away

from him, he drew me. When I was a

sinner, he loved me. I'm so thankful all

through my life, from the day I was born

until the day that I'm standing here

right before you this morning. God has

been good to me. And God has been good

to you just the same. And you ought to

leave this place today and go testify.

From the Red Sea to the Jordan River,

God's been good.

All right, let me give you two more.

Number four,

write this down. We testify of his

preeminence.

This is the phrase that we read

together. That all the people of the

earth might know the hand of the Lord.

These altars that they are building are

not only for their own benefit, but they

are for the benefit of the world around

them. They're they're not just meant to

be exquisite, but they're meant to be

evangelistic.

Do you hear that? They're not meant to

be exquisite. They're not just supposed

to be some memorial that they construct,

but they're their purpose is to be

evangelistic, to speak of the power of

God that a world might know. That a

world might know that they serve a

mighty God. They're not meant to be just

traditional pieces. They're formed to be

testimonies. They're not meant to just

be props, but they're pictures of the

power of God.

The purpose of these altars is to

demonstrate that the hand of the Lord is

mighty in a lost and a pagan world. All

of those Canaanites when they saw that

altar, it immediately brought to their

mind the goodness of God. And you, you,

Peter writes in the book of First Peter

that you and I are lively stones. You

and I are living testimonies. You and I

are walking and talking altars of the

goodness of God. When people look at

you, they ought to see how good and how

strong and how great and how mighty your

God is. Just like when the Canaanites

looked at those altars, they saw how

great their God was. When they look at

you and I, when the world out there

looks at you and I, when they talk to

you and I, when they interact with you

and I, do they see Jesus? Do they

recognize how good and how great our God

is?

I think in the church, I'm just going to

pause here for two minutes and I'm going

to make a church application. Okay? I

think in the church a lot of times we've

we've began to lift up things that God

never intended to be lifted up. We build

altars in the church and we we do it in

the name of religion. But I wonder what

would happen if instead of focusing on

on all of the stuff or or the things

that God uh has given us or or however

you want to say it, the things that we

have made idols is really what it is.

They're these little things that we have

crafted and and we begin to worship the

thing. We begin to worship the altar

instead of the God that it was built

for. We begin to worship the stone

instead of the God that it pictures for

us. And then we begin to argue over

things. And I wonder what would happen

if instead of all of that mess, what if

the church would just come together and

just start testifying about how good God

has been to us. That's it. That's it.

You realize it's not about the altar.

The altar was just the picture. It was

simply simply pointing them to Jesus. It

was simply a testimony that pointed them

to Jesus. And so we must point people to

Jesus.

Let me give you one more and I'm done. I

saw this last night. This message was

only supposed to have four points, but I

saw this la late last night. I was up

way too long last night into the wee

hours of this morning and I stumbled

across this as I was studying this text.

Write down number five. The purpose.

What's the purpose of testifying? What's

the purpose of all of this? I you've got

to look at the last statement in verse

24.

He said, "That you might fear the Lord

your God forever." Notice the text.

Notice exactly what your Bible says.

that you might fear the Lord.

Well, I thought that we were doing all

of this testifying for a world that's

outside these walls. I thought we were

doing all of this so that a pagan world

would see our God. True. But at the end

of the chapter, God doesn't say it's for

them. God says it's for you so that this

this nailed me in my heart last night,

this morning really.

It's for you. The testimony, yes, they

will benefit, but your testimony is for

your church.

Your brothers and sisters need to hear

your testimony. The text is very clear.

God does not say, "So that the

Canaanites might fear the Lord." He said

that in so many words in the first part

of verse 24. Yeah, we want to testify

and yeah, we want to tell people how

good our God is so that they might see

how great our God is. So that they might

understand his might and see the hand of

the Lord. But but notice how IT ENDS.

WHAT'S THE final purpose? It's not about

them. It's about you.

It's for your benefit.

Two things. First of all, that you might

fear the Lord, reverence him, stay in

awe of him. And then this right here,

the last word in the chapter, you cannot

miss it. It's so good. That you might

fear the Lord your God

>> forever.

Forever.

Do you realize that the greatest way to

keep a church faithful to our God is for

other church people to tell them how

great their God is?

I'm done. You can come, babe.

I'm going to try my very best to give

this to you and I hope it'll help you.

Faithfulness

faithfulness

comes directly

from the testimonies of God's people. We

have got a problem in our churches all

across America. I watch churches almost

every day of my life. I'm tuned into

some church somewhere in the United

States.

And there's a lot of good churches.

But you know what I see a lot of times

in churches is we have a church that

comes together. We meet on a Sunday. We

gather in a place like this. We sing

songs like we sang this morning. We hear

a preacher get up and preach something

that the Lord has laid on his heart that

he studied over. and we leave.

And if we talk to anyone at all, the

conversation never goes farther than,

"How was your week? It's good to see you

today." And that's it.

And we never tell one another, "Hey,

brother,

I'm going through some stuff right now.

Would you pray for me?"

And we never tell one another, hey, hey,

I I I know that it's church and church

is getting ready to start and and but

I've just got to take 30 seconds and

tell you what God did in my life this

week.

We wonder why people why is it so easy

for people to walk out of the church and

not come back? Why is it so easy for

people not to be faithful to our God?

Could it have something to do with the

fact that when they come to church, they

don't even hear about their God?

Could it be that when they come to

church, nobody's excited about it? Could

it be that nobody's faithful because

when they come into the house of God and

they look around at people who are

supposed to be worshiping, we just sit

around and act like God's never done

nothing for us. And so people who want

to be faithful are not faithful

because somebody's not telling them

about what God has done.

The altars are for you. The testimonies

are for you.

Yeah, you can walk out of here today and

you can go tell somebody about Jesus.

But let me give you another challenge

before you leave today. Why don't you

find somebody and you tell them

something that God has done for you this

week?

Why can't we brag on Jesus as

Christians? I'm concerned about this.

You try and talk to another Christian,

especially in our area. I don't know

what it is about this area, but you try

and talk to another believer, somebody

who says they are saved and and that

they're on their way to heaven, and you

try and talk about how good God's been,

and it feels like the most awkward

conversation you've ever had in your

life. Why?

And we wonder why people say, "All that

church stuff's not for me." Could it

have something to do with the fact that

God's people are not being testifiers of

God's goodness?

Has God been good to you? Oh, you sang

about it this morning. You sang the song

evidence. Oh, you sang the song uh uh

gratitude. And yeah, we worshiped God in

those songs. But did you mean it? Did it

mean anything to you?

I'm concerned about one thing

really,

and it has nothing to do with you.

has to do with me

because as I look back over my life, I

see God's goodness over and over and

over and over and over and over. Last 20

years of my life, really my whole life,

even before I was saved, God was good to

me. And I come to this place this

morning and I stand before these people

this morning.

And I'm terrified of something.

I'm fearful of something.

I'm genuinely terrified

>> that between this day and the day that I

go to heaven,

I'll be unfaithful

to the God who has been so good to me.

I'm being as transparent as I know how

to be right now. I'm terrified of it.

That the devil will get me with a

temptation and that the devil will will

stumble me and make me fall.

I mean, the New New Testament talks

about this. Peter talked about this.

Hey, take heed that you don't fall. It's

a good thing to be terrified of, but I

want you to know I'm terrified of it.

And part of the reason I'm so scared of

failing is because I have seen men way

more spiritual than I am, way closer to

God than I am.

And they fell.

I watched church members. No, there

wasn't pastors, but they were good,

godly church members who were in church,

who were active, who were serving, who

would have been honored on a Sunday like

this,

and they fell.

Unfaithful.

Why? What happened? I can't put a finger

on it completely, but I really believe

that if the church would just get

comfortable praising God, that if we

would just get comfortable lifting up

the name of Jesus, then all men would be

drawn. In fact,

that scripture

Jesus himself said, "If I be lifted up,

I will draw all men to myself."

So, if people are not being drawn, if

people are becoming unfaithful to church

and unfaithful to God,

that's not God's fault.

We're missing something on our end.

And I want to tell you church, as your

pastor this morning, from the bottom of

my heart, the thing I desire more than

anything in this life, I don't I don't

care if I'm ever rich. Certainly don't

care if I'm ever famous.

Could care less about

I mean, honestly, I don't I don't even

care about a big church.

I don't want to be unfaithful to the God

who has been so good to me.

And you know the way one of the most

encouraging things in my life I'm done.

I'm telling you this right here and I'm

done. The most encouraging thing in my

life is when somebody another Christian

comes into my life and they say, "Pastor

John, can I tell you what God has done

for me?"

Go read some stories of the saints who

have gone on before and you read about

how God provided for them and how God

took care of them and how God made a way

for them.

And all of a sudden, my discouraged

heart becomes a little more encouraged.

If they can do it, I can do it. If God

can do it for them, God can do it for

me. It's the testimony of God's people

that motivates God's people to keep

going. So, if the testimony is absent,

if the altars have been broken down, if

we're not telling one another about how

good God's been, don't be surprised when

we walk out the doors and we do not feel

inclined to ever come back.

because we never heard about how great

he was.

May it not be so in this place.

In this place, may we be a people who so

adore our savior that every person we

come in contact with, we going to talk

to them about Jesus, whether they want

to hear it or not. Your neighbors, your

co-workers, your family, they know when

they come into your house, they going to

hear about Jesus. They're going to hear

about what God's done for you. They're

going to hear about how he saved you.

They're going to hear about how he

provided for you. They're going to hear

about what he's doing in your church.

They're going to hear about Jesus. Well,

I don't think that that would go over

very well. Look at Jesus's ministry. Did

anything he say go over very well?

Let's just give him praise. Let's just

lift him up. And let's see if he doesn't

draw all men to himself.

It's for you just as much as it's for

them. Here's what I want us to do today.

It's been a little bit of a different

Sunday and I I understand that. But I

hope that the word of God has spoken to

your heart this morning.
