  2. Hey

  3. Heat.

  4. Good morning everybody. It's good to see

  5. you today.

  6. I am glad that you are in church with

  7. us. Let's stand and we're going to sing

  8. a little bit this morning. You know this

  9. song, are you washed in the blood?

  10. I hope that you can say you are this

  11. morning.

  12. Washed in the blood of Jesus Christ.

  13. Let's sing it out now all together.

  14. Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing

  15. power? Are you washed in the blood of

  16. the lamb?

  17. Are you fully trusting in his grace this

  18. hour? Are you washed in the blood of the

  19. lamb?

  20. Are you washed

  21. in the blood?

  22. In the soul cleansing blood of the lamb?

  23. Are your garments spotless? Are they

  24. white as snow? Are you washed in the

  25. blood of the lamb?

  26. Are you walking daily by the Savior's

  27. side? Are you washed in the blood of the

  28. lamb?

  29. Do you rest each moment in the

  30. crucified?

  31. Are you washed in the blood of the lamb?

  32. Here we go. Are you washed

  33. in the blood

  34. in the soul cleansing blood of the lamb?

  35. Are your garments spotless? Are they

  36. white as snow? Are you washed in the

  37. blood of the lamb?

  38. the garments that are stained with sin

  39. and be washed in the blood of the lamb.

  40. There's a fountain flowing from the soul

  41. unclean. Oh, be washed in the blood.

  42. Real loud now. Let me hear you sing it.

  43. Are you washed

  44. in the blood?

  45. In the soul cleansing blood of the lamb.

  46. Are your garments spotless? Are they

  47. white as snow? Are you washed in the

  48. blood of the lamb?

  49. Are your garments spotless? Are they

  50. white as snow? Are you washed in the

  51. blood of the lamb?

  52. Well, if you're washed in the blood this

  53. morning, let's give the Lord a hand clap

  54. of praise.

  55. If you're glad to be saved, say amen

  56. this morning. And you can be seated for

  57. just a moment.

  58. I want to give you a few announcements

  59. today.

  60. Just leave that there. Tonight at 5:' we

  61. are going to have our legacy dinner. And

  62. uh we've got food uh coming. We're going

  63. to cater this meal. Here's what this is.

  64. If you have been a Christian, if you've

  65. been saved for 20 years, at least 20

  66. years, you've been saved, then we want

  67. to honor you and we want to say thank

  68. you for your faithfulness. And so

  69. tonight, we're going to do that at 5:00

  70. here at the church. We're catering this

  71. meal and uh me and my my family will be

  72. here and we want you to come. Now, we've

  73. already ordered the food, but we ordered

  74. extra. So, if you did not sign up or you

  75. did not know about it or or you didn't

  76. know if you'd be able to come, but now

  77. you can come, you can come. We'll have

  78. plenty of food tonight and we're just

  79. going to have a good time fellowshipping

  80. and talking and maybe share some

  81. testimonies tonight and and just be the

  82. family of God. Just have a good time at

  83. our legacy dinner and just honor people

  84. that I believe are worthy of honor. I'm

  85. thankful for those who have gone before

  86. and paved the way and showed me an

  87. example of what faithfulness looks like.

  88. I'm thankful for those people and I want

  89. to honor them. And so we're going to do

  90. that tonight. What do you got next,

  91. Brother Jason? Uh, so next Saturday,

  92. this coming Saturday actually, we're

  93. going to Hail's Lake, which is over in

  94. Grayson County. This is our Better Man

  95. conclusion. So, Better Man concluded on

  96. yesterday, we had our final Better Man

  97. session of the summer. And so, we're

  98. going to end everything with a bang this

  99. coming Saturday. We're going to meet

  100. over at Hills Lake at 9:00. If you want

  101. to go earlier, feel free. I'll be there

  102. at nine o'clock. All right. and uh we'll

  103. have a good day fishing. Um I'm I'm

  104. planning to stay past noon a little bit

  105. and then come back sometime that

  106. afternoon. You can stay as long as you

  107. want, but we're just going to have a

  108. good time. Uh you say, "I didn't go to

  109. better man. I I never made it to a

  110. better man." That's okay. Are you a man?

  111. You are welcome to come. All right.

  112. That's the only requirement. You come on

  113. and fish with us a little while and have

  114. some good fellowship and and we're just

  115. going to have a great time. You may want

  116. to, if you're planning to come, you're

  117. going to want to check into getting your

  118. your fishing license and your trout

  119. license, as well as you're probably

  120. going to want to bring a little

  121. something to eat because there's not a

  122. whole lot out there. So, think about

  123. those things as you prepare. And we're

  124. going to have a great time this

  125. Saturday. What's next, brother? Ladies

  126. Bible study will be the same day this

  127. Saturday, May 2nd. That'll be at 10:00

  128. a.m. So, we're going to Ladies, this is

  129. a change from normal. Normally, your

  130. Bible study is uh I think the third

  131. week, second week. uh this this month.

  132. It's the first week. The reason we're

  133. doing that is uh Esther will be out of

  134. town. Me and Esther will be out of town

  135. the following weekend. And so, we're

  136. going to go ahead and let y'all do it

  137. this weekend. This Saturday, ladies

  138. Bible study, 10:00 a.m. Bring a snack to

  139. share and uh Esther will be teaching

  140. through the book and have a time of

  141. prayer and uh just a good encouraging

  142. time together. So, that'll be this

  143. Saturday at 10 while the men are

  144. fishing. Is that everything? That's all

  145. you've got? There's one other thing.

  146. Next Sunday night. Okay. Yeah. Yeah.

  147. Yeah. Sorry, we didn't put this in there

  148. and I forgot. Um, next Sunday night we

  149. are going to do an event here at the

  150. church. Next weekend is the um I don't

  151. know what you call it. Is it teacher

  152. appreciation? Is that what it's called?

  153. It's teacher appreciation weekend in the

  154. United States. And so we're going to

  155. we're going to do something for our

  156. teachers. Next Sunday night we're going

  157. to gather here at we we'll just do five

  158. o'clock again. and we'll meet here at

  159. the church at 5:00 next Sunday night and

  160. what we're going to do is we're going to

  161. hand write 120 thank you cards and we're

  162. going to take them and drop them off at

  163. the middle school um for teacher

  164. appreciation weekend. We've also ordered

  165. uh cookies from a local bakery and so

  166. we're going to put a thank you card and

  167. a cookie together and we're going to

  168. deliver those to the middle school and

  169. just a a way to show our appreciation

  170. for the staff and the teachers there at

  171. the middle school. And so I want to let

  172. you know about that. We want I need your

  173. help. I don't want to write 120 thank

  174. you cards next Sunday night by myself.

  175. My hand is going to be hurting about the

  176. So, please come next Sunday night, five

  177. o'clock. Help us out with this. It'll go

  178. very quickly. And uh and we'll have a

  179. time of prayer with them over the cards

  180. and pray for our school. This is a way

  181. and and listen, this month we're we're

  182. really emphasizing something we want to

  183. emphasize this year is investing in

  184. people. Uh, I've told you many times the

  185. church knows that I've got a sticky note

  186. in my office that sits on the brick

  187. brick block wall in front of me that

  188. says three just those three words,

  189. invest in people. And every day that I

  190. see that card, I try and invest in

  191. someone. Whether it's through a text

  192. message or sending somebody money for

  193. coffee or giving somebody a call that we

  194. haven't heard from in a while, what,

  195. however it is, we want to invest in

  196. people. And that's something that we've

  197. emphasized this month in our church. And

  198. uh, we've done it all interior.

  199. everything that we've done. We're

  200. tonight we're honoring and and investing

  201. in uh the those who have left a legacy

  202. for us. And last Sunday, we recognized

  203. our servants and our volunteers. And

  204. we'll do more of those here in just a

  205. moment today as well. And and but next

  206. Sunday night, we want to take it outside

  207. of the walls and we want to invest in

  208. people who are not a part of our church.

  209. And that is for this time, it's going to

  210. be the teachers at the middle school and

  211. we're going to tell them thank you. All

  212. right. So that'll be next Sunday night.

  213. You make plans to be here and help us

  214. with that. So a lot going on. Vacation

  215. Bible School is coming up. When I get

  216. back from Florida in a couple weeks,

  217. we're going to have a meeting about

  218. vacation Bible school and get that

  219. rolling. We've got a lot of work to do.

  220. So, be praying about that as well. Lots

  221. of exciting things happening, kicking

  222. into high gear going into summertime.

  223. And it's going to be it's going to be a

  224. great great summer. But we can't get so

  225. focused on what's ahead that we miss

  226. what God has for us right now. And I

  227. want to go to church right now. I want

  228. to worship the Lord right now. I want to

  229. hear from God this morning. Do you want

  230. to hear from the Holy Spirit this

  231. morning? So, let's pray and let's ask

  232. the Holy Spirit to help us and to just

  233. give us a wonderful day today uh for the

  234. next little while in his house.

  235. Our heavenly gracious father, this

  236. morning we come before you and we're so

  237. thankful for everything that's going on,

  238. Lord. Uh we're so grateful that we get

  239. to invest in people. We're so thankful

  240. that we get to serve others and and

  241. Lord, we're so grateful that that

  242. there's so many things going on in our

  243. church. And I pray that Lord, you would

  244. bless those events. I pray that you

  245. would help those events this morning,

  246. right now. I pray that you would bless

  247. us in this place. Lord, we need you. We

  248. look at the things going on in our

  249. country. Father, we look at even last

  250. night, the thing, the awful things that

  251. have taken place just in the last 24

  252. hours in our country. And Lord, we

  253. desperately, we are reminded that we

  254. desperately need you. And father, if we

  255. can't feel you and sense you and

  256. experience you in the church, then how

  257. are we ever supposed to expect to change

  258. a wicked culture? I pray this morning

  259. your Holy Spirit would fill this place,

  260. touch every heart, Lord. As we sing, I

  261. pray that you would give us the help

  262. that we need. May we sing to you and you

  263. alone. May we lift our voices and give

  264. you the praise and the glory that you

  265. deserve. I pray that you would be

  266. glorified in everything that's done.

  267. Father, it's possible that there is one

  268. here today who does not know for sure

  269. they're on their way to heaven. And I

  270. pray that today would be the day that

  271. they call on the name of Jesus. You've

  272. promised that whosoever calls on the

  273. name of the Lord shall be saved. What a

  274. blessing. Lord, we would rejoice and

  275. give you praise for one soul who is

  276. saved this morning from an eternal hell.

  277. And Lord, I pray that you would bless me

  278. as I preach here in just a little bit. I

  279. need your help, Father, this morning.

  280. Give me the strength that I need. give

  281. me the clarity of mind and the focus

  282. that I need. Bless this time on this

  283. day. I pray in Jesus name. Amen. All

  284. right. Last week, uh, we're going to do

  285. this right now so that we can get I

  286. don't want to say get it out of the way,

  287. but so we can get it out of the way.

  288. Okay. So, last week we went through and

  289. we recognized some of our servants, some

  290. of our volunteers, and I want to

  291. recognize some more this morning for

  292. different reasons. Some were not here

  293. last week. And so I skipped some last

  294. week and I I I was confused. They were

  295. not in order. So I confused myself. I

  296. skipped some last week. Some were not

  297. here last week. So we're going to do the

  298. rest of them this morning. Okay. So

  299. we're going to do it just like we did

  300. last week. Last week we made people get

  301. up front. This week you got to get up

  302. front. All right. Here we go. Brother

  303. Jason, that screen's going to take care

  304. of itself. You come on up here, brother.

  305. Brother Jeff Rose, come on up here,

  306. brother.

  307. Brother Wes.

  308. Come on, brother Wes.

  309. We appreciate each of these men and and

  310. all of these people are working in in

  311. different places. She's still not here.

  312. Um, brother Brother Matt. Come on,

  313. brother Matt.

  314. Brother Joe, come on. Brother Joe.

  315. Um, all of these people serve and and

  316. you saw the people up here last week as

  317. well. Whenever you do this, you always

  318. run the risk of forgetting someone. So,

  319. we have really prayed and thought and

  320. considered who our who who serves in our

  321. church. If we forgot someone, please

  322. forgive us. Um, Mrs. Charlotte, if you

  323. weren't here last week, come on,

  324. Mrs. Julie.

  325. All right.

  326. Thank you. Thank you. And all of these

  327. people, I'm going to try and remember

  328. what each of these people do. Um, so

  329. that I can tell you, uh, Brother Jason

  330. helps in a variety of ways. This

  331. morning, he is, uh, he's running the

  332. screens for us this morning, doing all

  333. of the media. He does that, uh, whenever

  334. we need him to. He jumps in and does

  335. that. And so, we appreciate that. He

  336. helps with our youth night, helps with

  337. our youth programs, and does a lot of

  338. things behind the scenes for the church.

  339. Uh, brother Jason works for the

  340. sheriff's department. And so, he's great

  341. connection. Whenever I need something, I

  342. call Jason. I said, "Can you fix can you

  343. figure this out? Can you connect me with

  344. the right person here?" So, he's a great

  345. contact to have. We appreciate Brother

  346. Jason. Brother Jeff is a great asset to

  347. our church. He has been an incredible

  348. encouragement to me the last couple

  349. months. And he has started serving with

  350. the guest and greeting guests at the

  351. door and and we're going to be working

  352. more with that. And brother Jeff is also

  353. uh going to be preaching for us more

  354. often. He's going to be helping fill the

  355. pull pit. And in fact, this Wednesday

  356. night, you're going to get to hear

  357. Brother Jeff preach. He's going to fill

  358. the pull pit for us this Wednesday. And

  359. uh so he's a great blessing for us.

  360. Brother Wes is uh just Brother Wes. He

  361. does everything that needs done and he

  362. has for you've done it for 45 years

  363. probably

  364. give or take. He's probably been here in

  365. this place doing what he does for 45

  366. years. And we are so grateful for

  367. Brother Wes and Mrs. Martha as well and

  368. their faithfulness. Brother Joe is helps

  369. with the cleaning. He cleans as well as

  370. brother Matt. They come and they clean

  371. the church uh during the month and keep

  372. everything clean. Mrs. Charlotte works

  373. with the Bethl kids ministry and keeps

  374. that running smoothly and uh and then

  375. Miss Julie works in the nursery as well.

  376. So that can we thank all of these and

  377. tell them how much we appreciate them

  378. and their service.

  379. Wonderful. You guys can have a seat and

  380. uh we appreciate all that you do.

  381. uh what you see on a Sunday morning,

  382. what we do on a Sunday morning is just

  383. the tip of the iceberg of what goes on

  384. here at the church and it's constant.

  385. It's all day. It's every day. We've got

  386. stuff going on. And it takes people.

  387. Ministry takes people. And uh we

  388. wouldn't be able to do we wouldn't be

  389. able to reach our community. We wouldn't

  390. be able to worship our savior like we do

  391. if it wasn't for the people who give. We

  392. don't pay these people anything. They

  393. just give. They volunteer. They show up.

  394. They're faithful to the house of God.

  395. They're people who we can count on to do

  396. what needs done when it needs done. And

  397. as their pastor this week and those who

  398. we recognized last week, I want to say

  399. thank you. Uh it's a great great great

  400. privilege to pastor people who are

  401. willing to serve the Lord. And I tell

  402. our people, you're not serving me. In

  403. fact, I'm very careful not to ask people

  404. to do stuff because I don't want them to

  405. say yes because the pastor asked them to

  406. do it. I want I would rather you come to

  407. me and say, "Pastor, I need something to

  408. do. If you do that, I'll put you to

  409. work. we'll find something for you to

  410. do. But I'm thankful for people who just

  411. serve the Lord and worship the Lord.

  412. Amen. Uh let's praise the Lord. Can we

  413. give the Lord a hand clap of praise and

  414. thank him for our church family?

  415. Wonderful. Let's all stand this morning

  416. and let's sing. We're going to sing this

  417. song, Your Name. I love the words of

  418. this song. Let's sing it out this

  419. morning.

  420. As morning

  421. dawns and evening fades,

  422. you inspire

  423. songs of praise that rise from earth to

  424. touch your heart and glorify

  425. your name. name.

  426. Your name

  427. is a strong and mighty tower. Your name

  428. is a shelter like no other. Your name,

  429. let the nations sing it louder.

  430. Nothing has the power to save

  431. but your name.

  432. Jesus

  433. in your name we pray.

  434. Come and fill our hearts today.

  435. Lord, give us strength to live for you

  436. and glorify

  437. your name.

  438. Cuz your name

  439. is a strong and mighty tower. Your name

  440. is a shelter like no other. your name.

  441. Let the nations sing it louder.

  442. Cuz nothing has the power to say

  443. but your name

  444. is a strong and mighty tower. Your name

  445. is a shelter like no other. your name.

  446. Let the nations sing it louder.

  447. Cuz nothing has the power to say

  448. but your name.

  449. Amen. Aren't you thankful for the name

  450. of Jesus this morning? Let's continue to

  451. worship him with this song that I want

  452. us to sing it as a testimony today.

  453. Simply says, "You are my all and all."

  454. And I hope you're here today not because

  455. uh you needed something to do. I hope

  456. you're here today not because you were

  457. just checking a box and it's a religious

  458. thing to do. It's a good thing to do. I

  459. hope and my prayer is that every person

  460. who's here this morning is here today

  461. because he is everything to you. you

  462. love Jesus today. If that's true, then

  463. you can sing this song from your heart

  464. to him in complete honesty and

  465. transparency and worship the Lord by

  466. telling him, "Lord, you're my all and

  467. all. You're everything to me." Let's

  468. sing today.

  469. You are my strength when I am weak. You

  470. are the treasure that I seek. You are my

  471. all in all

  472. and seeking you as a precious jewel.

  473. Lord to give up. I'd be a fool. You are

  474. my all in all.

  475. Jesus,

  476. lamb of God,

  477. worthy

  478. is your name.

  479. Jesus,

  480. lamb of God,

  481. worthy

  482. is your name.

  483. Taking my sin, my cross, my shame.

  484. Rising again, I bless your name. You are

  485. my all in all.

  486. And when I fall down, you pick me up.

  487. When I am dry, you fill my cup. You are

  488. my all in all.

  489. Jesus,

  490. lamb of God,

  491. worthy

  492. is your name.

  493. Jesus,

  494. lamb of God,

  495. worthy

  496. is your name.

  497. >> Jesus,

  498. lamb of God,

  499. worthy

  500. is your name.

  501. Jesus,

  502. lamb of God,

  503. worthy

  504. is your name.

  505. Amen. Praise the Lord. I hope he's your

  506. all and all this morning. Let's sing one

  507. more song together today. It's one of my

  508. favorite songs and has been since it

  509. came out a few years ago. And I want us

  510. to worship the Lord with it. Think about

  511. it. How good he's been to you. We're not

  512. here today because we deserve it. We're

  513. here today because he has been good to

  514. us. His grace and his mercy has been

  515. poured out on us. All my life I can

  516. sing. He has been faithful. Let's

  517. worship the Lord today.

  518. Oh, here we go. Think about it. I love

  519. you, Lord,

  520. for your mercy never fails me.

  521. All my days

  522. I've been held in your hands.

  523. From the moment that I wake up

  524. until I lay my head,

  525. I will sing

  526. of the goodness

  527. of God.

  528. All my life you have been faithful.

  529. All my life, you have been so so good.

  530. With every breath that I am able,

  531. I will sing

  532. of the goodness

  533. of God.

  534. >> I love your voice.

  535. You have led me through the fire

  536. and in darkest night.

  537. >> You are close like no other.

  538. I've known you as a father.

  539. I've known you as a friend.

  540. I have lived

  541. in the goodness.

  542. Oh, let's sing this out now.

  543. All my life you have been faith, has he?

  544. And all my life you have been so so

  545. good.

  546. With every breath that I am able,

  547. I will sing of the goodness.

  548. I love this part right here. Let's sing

  549. it now.

  550. Your goodness is running after. It's

  551. running after me.

  552. Your goodness is running after. It's

  553. running after me.

  554. With my life laid down, I surrender now.

  555. I give you everything.

  556. Your goodness is running after. It's

  557. running after me.

  558. Your goodness is running after. It's

  559. running after me.

  560. Your goodness is running after. It's

  561. running after me.

  562. With my life laid down, I've surrendered

  563. now. I give you everything.

  564. >> It's running after. It's running after

  565. me.

  566. And all my life you have been faithful.

  567. And all my life you have been so so

  568. good.

  569. With every breath that I am able,

  570. I will sing of the goodness

  571. of God.

  572. And all my life you have been faithful.

  573. All my life you have been so so good.

  574. With every breath that I am able,

  575. I will sing

  576. of the goodness

  577. of God.

  578. Oh, I will sing

  579. of the goodness

  580. of God.

  581. Oh, give the Lord a hand clap of praise.

  582. Wonderful singing.

  583. You may be seated this morning. I

  584. appreciate you worshiping the Lord with

  585. us today. I hope that your heart has

  586. been encouraged. We're going to have our

  587. ushers come at this time and our

  588. children may be dismissed. Y'all can

  589. head downstairs

  590. for your Bible time and Bethl kids.

  591. We want to continue to worship the Lord

  592. today with an offering. And uh so you

  593. give as to the Lord this morning and the

  594. Lord will bless you for that. And while

  595. they take up this offering, Esther is

  596. going to play a song on the piano and

  597. then I'll come right back after that and

  598. we'll open the word of God for a few

  599. minutes. Hey, while they take this up,

  600. while she plays, why don't you just

  601. pray? Bow your head there and pray and

  602. say, "Lord, touch me today. Do something

  603. in my heart through the word of God

  604. today." And I know that the Lord will do

  605. that for you. Brother Wes, would you

  606. pray? Bless this offering and ask the

  607. Lord to help me as I preach here in a

  608. little bit.

  609. Heat. Heat.

  610. Amen. Well, take your Bibles this

  611. morning and join me in the book of

  612. Joshua and chapter 5.

  613. Book of Joshua and chapter five this

  614. morning.

  615. Heavenly Father, we need your help right

  616. now in this moment. I need you, Lord.

  617. >> I do pray, Father, that you would help

  618. me as I preach today.

  619. Lord, I I only want to communicate what

  620. you have already said. I They don't need

  621. my opinion.

  622. Lord, these people do not need what what

  623. I think. They need what you have said

  624. clearly in your word. I pray that today

  625. you would help me for just a little

  626. while. Lord, strengthen my voice and my

  627. throat this morning.

  628. And I pray that you'd give me the

  629. strength that I need to preach this text

  630. exactly as you would have it preached to

  631. your people. And I pray that your people

  632. would be receptive to the word of God

  633. this morning. They would hear and that

  634. they would receive it. and that Lord you

  635. would help us. I do pray for the one or

  636. the two who may be here this morning who

  637. do not know for sure that they're on

  638. their way to heaven. Father, I pray that

  639. you would through the preaching of the

  640. word of God draw them to repentance this

  641. morning. We give you all the glory and

  642. all the praise. Help me now, I pray for

  643. a little while so that you might be

  644. glorified through the word of God. We

  645. love you very much. We ask these things

  646. in Jesus name. Amen. Joshua chapter 5.

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  647. This morning I want to preach a message

  648. titled this. The high priority of

  649. holiness.

  650. The high priority of holiness. We come

  651. in our study this morning. We're walking

  652. through the book of Joshua chapter at a

  653. time every Sunday morning. And so we

  654. come now to Joshua chapter 5. And really

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  655. if we can summarize Joshua 5 in one

  656. word, I believe the word would be

  657. holiness. God is calling his people to

  658. separate themselves, to be distinct, to

  659. be different from everyone else in the

  660. world. We're going to see that in this

  661. text this morning. I want you to

  662. remember the nation of Israel is

  663. standing in Joshua chapter 5. They're

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  664. standing on the westward bank of the

  665. Jordan River. We've talked about how

  666. they got there over the last few weeks.

  667. They have wandered in the wilderness.

  668. Moses has died. Joshua has been risen up

  669. as the new leader. And now they have

  670. just come across the Jordan River from

  671. east to west. The land of Canaan is

  672. there where they're standing now. That

  673. is the promised land that they have

  674. waited for since God told Abraham that

  675. it would be his land. 500 years they

  676. have waited to stand where they are

  677. standing right now. They look back

  678. behind them and the Jordan River which

  679. was overflowing its banks. It was

  680. rushing. It was impassible moments ago.

  681. It has now been dried up completely. And

  682. they've walked across on dry ground. a

  683. great miracle. God does a a fabulous,

  684. wonderful miracle before them to allow

  685. them to cross over. A million people

  686. crossing over on dry ground through the

  687. midst of the Jordan River. And they

  688. built those altars that we talked about.

  689. And they built those altars, one in the

  690. middle of the river, and when the water

  691. would come back, it would cover it. But

  692. then in the dry season, when that river

  693. would go down, they would begin to see

  694. those stones, that altar in the midst.

  695. And it would remind them that their God

  696. provided back then and their God can

  697. provide now. And then they built another

  698. altar over on the on the westward shore.

  699. And they used that as a reminder all

  700. year long of the great miracle that God

  701. did in bringing them across the Jordan

  702. River. And now finally,

  703. finally, they've arrived.

  704. Finally, it's time to go defeat the

  705. Canaanites. Finally, it's time to go

  706. conquer the land. Finally, it's time to

  707. possess what God has given them. I'm

  708. sure that's what they thought. But God

  709. has one more thing he needs to take care

  710. of. And it doesn't have anything to do

  711. with the Canaanites. And it doesn't have

  712. anything to do with God. It has

  713. everything to do with the people of

  714. Israel.

  715. They may be ready militarily, but their

  716. heart is not yet ready. And so Joshua

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  717. chapter 5, God is going to speak to them

  718. and tell them, "Hey, it's time for

  719. personal holiness." The high priority of

  720. holiness. Look at verse one.

  721. Everything Everything is right.

  722. Everything is right for them to go right

  723. now and take the the land of Canaan.

  724. Look at verse one. Notice what the Bible

  725. says. They've just come over the Jordan

  726. River. And it came to pass when all the

  727. kings of the Amorites, which were on the

  728. side of Jordan westward, that's where

  729. the land of Canaan was. That's the

  730. promised land. That's what they're going

  731. to inherit. That's what they're going to

  732. possess.

  733. All of the kings who lived in that land,

  734. all of the kings of the Canaanites,

  735. which were by the sea, heard that the

  736. Lord had dried up the waters of the

  737. Jordan from before the children of

  738. Israel until all were passed over. Now,

  739. watch this. The end of verse one, that

  740. their heart melted, neither was their

  741. spirit in them anymore because of the

  742. children of Israel. If every every

  743. military strategist would tell you the

  744. same thing in this moment. If there's

  745. ever a time to attack, that time is

  746. right now. You God has just done a great

  747. miracle for you. You look at the the

  748. kings of the enemy kings that are living

  749. in this land and every one of them they

  750. have no courage left. They are weak.

  751. They are distraught. They are worried.

  752. They are scared. They just saw what God

  753. did when the when the uh nation of

  754. Israel comes across the Jordan River and

  755. now they are terrified. Quite honestly,

  756. they are terrified. They are shaking.

  757. They are melting. They they don't know

  758. what they're going to do. They were not

  759. ready for this. They were not prepared

  760. for this. Perhaps they thought that the

  761. Jordan River was so high it was

  762. impossible to pass. Perhaps they thought

  763. they had some time still. Perhaps they

  764. thought they had a few months left, but

  765. that they could, you know, get their

  766. military right and prepare a plan and

  767. how they were going to attack or or

  768. defend against the nation of Israel, but

  769. that time has gone because God has just

  770. done a great miracle. And any god that

  771. can part the Jordan River, can certainly

  772. defeat any military that they might

  773. have. And so they are terrified. And any

  774. military strategist, I'm sure Joshua,

  775. the great military leader that he was,

  776. is probably ready to go. He's probably

  777. gungho. Now is the time. This is the

  778. time. God has done all of this for us.

  779. He's parted the Jordan River. We've come

  780. across on dry ground. It's time to go.

  781. But God said, "Not yet, Joshua. There's

  782. something you have to do." Not yet,

  783. Joshua.

  784. Your people aren't ready yet.

  785. I need to understand.

  786. I need to see that they trust me more

  787. than they trust anything else. I need to

  788. see that their heart is prepared in

  789. holiness. Here's the deal this morning.

  790. This is the message in a paragraph.

  791. You and I face spiritual battles and I

  792. assume every person here would love to

  793. claim spiritual victory, right? You want

  794. to live the victorious Christian life.

  795. That's what the picture of the promised

  796. land is. It is a picture of the

  797. victorious Christian life. Yes, there

  798. are battles that have to be fought. Yes,

  799. there are enemies that exist, but you

  800. can have victory over them. But you

  801. cannot go to battle until you have first

  802. been purified. You cannot go win

  803. spiritual victories until you are

  804. spiritual. You have to have in your

  805. heart holiness to the one true God.

  806. Well, holiness, nobody preaches on that

  807. because that's just a pastor thing. No,

  808. it's not a pastor thing. It's a

  809. Christian thing. If you're saved this

  810. morning, you have been called to be

  811. holy. The Bible says in the New

  812. Testament, "Be ye holy as I am holy."

  813. You must be holy before God. What does

  814. that mean? What does holy mean? The word

  815. means set apart. It means different.

  816. Different from the world. We live

  817. different. We talk different. We walk

  818. different. We act different. We do

  819. different things because we are set

  820. apart. We belong to God.

  821. We're holy. There's a standard of

  822. living. And what we want as Christians,

  823. we want all of the spiritual victories.

  824. We want all of the miracles. We want all

  825. of the healing. We want all of the

  826. provision. We want the God who parted

  827. the Jordan River to do all of the

  828. miracles for us, but we're not willing

  829. to live for him. And until we come to a

  830. place where we are willing to sacrifice

  831. and surrender to him and give him

  832. everything, then I'm afraid that

  833. churches and Christians will not see

  834. spiritual victories that our God is

  835. capable of giving. It's not his fault.

  836. It's our fault because we have rushed

  837. into something without preparing our

  838. hearts first. There is a high priority

  839. to holiness. Let's talk about it. I want

  840. to show you three things this morning

  841. straight from the text.

  842. Straight from the text, this chapter.

  843. I'm not going to read all these verses

  844. this morning for sake of time, but I'm

  845. going to pick out a few as we go along.

  846. And I'll give you three things this

  847. morning that have to do with the high

  848. priority of holiness as it relates to

  849. the nation of Israel and then as it

  850. applies to you and I. Number one, write

  851. this down. The first thing we see in

  852. this text is the activity of holiness.

  853. In verse number one, rather verse number

  854. two down through verse number eight, God

  855. is going to give a command. Notice what

  856. it says in verse two. At that time,

  857. while the enemy is shaking in their

  858. boots, while while the enemy is

  859. wondering what's going on, while the

  860. time is just right to attack,

  861. at that time the Lord said unto Joshua,

  862. "Make these sharp knives." All right,

  863. it's getting good here. God's getting

  864. ready to tell Joshua, "Go get them."

  865. Right? The enemy is shaking and God

  866. comes to Joshua and says, "Hey, make

  867. some sharp knives." Joshua's probably

  868. thinking, "Booyah! It's time to go,

  869. baby. We're going to go defeat the

  870. enemy. We're going to go conquer this

  871. place." Watch what he says. Not what

  872. Joshua expected. I'm almost positive. He

  873. said, "And circumcise again the children

  874. of Israel the second time." Wait a

  875. minute. That makes absolutely no sense

  876. at all whatsoever.

  877. Everybody here know what circumcision

  878. is?

  879. I don't want to explain it. Okay,

  880. everybody know what circumcision is?

  881. Okay, God's going to tell him, "Hey,

  882. Joshua, make your sharp knives and I

  883. want you to circumcise all of your

  884. fighting men."

  885. Well, that don't make any sense at all.

  886. The enemy is on their heels. The time to

  887. attack is right now. Any military

  888. strategist would tell you that chapter

  889. 5, verse one is the prime opportunity to

  890. attack the enemy.

  891. After seeing God part the waters of the

  892. Jordan River, the Canaanites are

  893. terrified. It's time to go, God. Surely

  894. it's time to go now. Then God said, "No,

  895. make some sharp knives, but not for the

  896. Canaanites. For you. Because before you

  897. can go conquer them, you have to conquer

  898. your own flesh.

  899. I need to see that you trust me." God

  900. tells them to do this very strange thing

  901. to us. He said, "Circumcise them."

  902. Doesn't seem like a good idea.

  903. doesn't seem like a good idea at all.

  904. No, nobody's going to tell you, "Okay,

  905. there's a rushing river." You think

  906. about this. Why did God wait till now?

  907. Right? Couldn't they have circumcised on

  908. the other side where there was when

  909. there is a rushing river that would

  910. protect them, that would keep the enemy

  911. and them separated? No. God said, "Cross

  912. the Jordan River. I'm going to do a

  913. great miracle for you." They all come

  914. across now. They're in enemy territory.

  915. And God said, 'Okay, now we want to um

  916. now we want to paralyze

  917. all of your fighting men for a week.

  918. That that doesn't make sense. Do you see

  919. the problem here? In enemy territory and

  920. none of your fighting men, you have

  921. absolutely no line of defense now. Any

  922. of the Canaanite kings could have come

  923. and conquered them. They had absolutely

  924. no line of defense. They were sitting

  925. ducks in enemy territory. Why would God

  926. tell them to do this? Because the

  927. activity of holiness, hear me right now.

  928. The activity of holiness is obedience.

  929. When it doesn't make sense, when it's

  930. uncomfortable, when it's not the way we

  931. would have planned it, when it's not

  932. like we would have done it, God's plans

  933. always supersede our plans. And to the

  934. nation of Israel, to Joshua, to the

  935. fighting men, this makes absolutely no

  936. sense at all. This is not a military

  937. strategy. This is a suicide mission to

  938. do this because we're in enemy

  939. territory. We have nothing to protect us

  940. and we have no way to defend ourselves

  941. now. God said, "Do you trust me enough

  942. to obey?"

  943. Holiness, the activity of holiness is

  944. obedience. You want to grow in your

  945. holiness? You want to be more like

  946. Christ this morning, do what he has said

  947. to do. Now in both the Abrahamic

  948. covenant in Genesis chapter 6 17 and the

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  949. renewed covenant at Mount Si, God had

  950. given clear direction that the nation of

  951. Israel would perform circumcision as a

  952. sign of that covenant.

  953. Circumcision was simply an outward

  954. showing. It was a sign that that these

  955. people were holy. They were separated.

  956. They were different. They were separated

  957. unto God. And so God had given clear

  958. directions on this. It was a symbol. It

  959. was literally a cutting away of the

  960. flesh and was therefore a daily reminder

  961. that they did not trust in their flesh,

  962. but they trusted in their God and the

  963. promise that he had made. And what

  964. better way to show that they trusted in

  965. God and not their flesh than to sit in

  966. military in enemy territory and do this

  967. procedure and be sitting ducks for a

  968. week. God said, "Do you trust me enough

  969. to obey me?" You see the picture? You

  970. see the context? Let me make the

  971. application. The greatest thing that you

  972. and I can do to grow in our personal

  973. holiness is simply to obey God. You

  974. cannot

  975. come in here on a Sunday morning, leave

  976. these doors here in just a few minutes

  977. when I'm finished, go out into here

  978. Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday, live

  979. like the world, talk like the world, act

  980. like the world, uh listen to the stuff

  981. of the world, go to the places of the

  982. world, and then expect to come back in

  983. here next Sunday and expect to receive

  984. some great blessing to hear from God, to

  985. receive something. No friend, that's not

  986. how it works. We We are separated. We

  987. are different. We are called to live a

  988. life of separation from the things of

  989. the world. You know, Christians, church

  990. people, we ought to talk different. We

  991. ought to look a little different. We

  992. ought to act a little different. We

  993. ought to not go to the places where some

  994. people go. We ought to not do the things

  995. that the world does. We ought to not

  996. listen to the music that the world

  997. listens to because we are holy. We are

  998. called to be separate. And we wonder why

  999. we come to church and we can just go

  1000. through a service and we don't we don't

1001. experience anything. We don't receive

1002. anything from the Lord. Well, that was a

  1003. boring message. I didn't get anything

1004. out of that. Well, let me tell you, I

1005. might not be the best preacher in the

1006. world, but this book right here is the

1007. best book in the world. And I'm

1008. convinced that if I'm preaching this

1009. book, you're going to get something out

  1010. of it.

  1011. >> Amen.

1012. >> The problem is not the book. The problem

1013. is not the content. The problem is not

1014. the service. The problem is that we go

1015. live like however we want to and we

1016. expect God to just pour out a little

1017. blessing when we're ready for it. And

1018. God said, "No, no, no spiritual

  1019. victories until you obey."

1020. Now, can I meddle for just a minute? Is

1021. that okay? It don't matter. I'm going to

  1022. anyways.

1023. Don't use your biblical ignorance as an

1024. exc as a justification for your sin.

  1025. People

1026. talk talk tell me hey pastor

1027. does the Bible I've never read in the

1028. Bible where it says that I have to give

  1029. in a church service.

1030. Okay. Well, you just not read your Bible

1031. because it says in first Corinthians,

1032. God loveth a cheerful giver.

  1033. It's right there. Don't use your

  1034. biblical ignorance

1035. as a justification for you to not be

1036. holy. No, you get in the book and you

1037. study the book and you do what it says.

1038. Well, pastor, I've never read in the

1039. Bible where it says I can't, you know,

1040. let let a a cuss word slip every now and

  1041. then. I I haven't read that. Well,

1042. you've not read your Bible. Bible says,

1043. "Let no corrupt communication proceed

1044. out of your mouth." No corrupt

  1045. communication.

1046. It's in there. Don't use your biblical

1047. ignorance as an excuse to live however

1048. you want. Just because you haven't read

1049. it doesn't mean it's not in here. God

1050. has given you the plan. He has told you

1051. what he expects. Obey what he has said.

  1052. I I haven't read, preacher. You're

1053. always telling us go to church all the

1054. time. And I've read my Bible and I don't

1055. read anywhere in that Bible where it

1056. says I have to go to church every

1057. Sunday. Hebrews chapter 10 in verse

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

1058. number 25 says, "Forsake not the

1059. assembling of yourselves together." I'm

1060. just trying I'm could go down a list. I

1061. could just go go. We could talk about

1062. all of the pet sins of our culture. I'm

1063. not going to. What I'm telling you to do

1064. is get in the book. It tells you how to

1065. live. do what it says. Study it, figure

1066. it out, and obey. Because if you won't

1067. obey what God has told you to do, you

1068. cannot expect to have spiritual victory

1069. in your life. And you wonder why you're

1070. depressed and you wonder why you're

1071. always anxious and you wonder why you're

  1072. always facing a it's always a battle for

1073. me. It's just another battle every week.

  1074. It's just the same thing. I don't know

  1075. if I can keep going. I don't know if I

1076. can keep doing this. I really need God

1077. to do a miracle in my life. Are you

  1078. living for him?

1079. There is a high priority to holiness.

1080. And before you can go conquer the

1081. enemies in your life, you have got to

1082. get personal. Cut away the flesh. Cut

1083. away your desires and say, "God, what is

1084. it you're asking me to do? I want to

1085. obey." Number one, the activity of

1086. holiness. Write down number two.

1087. Number two, we see the atonement

  1088. of holiness.

  1089. the atonement of holiness.

1090. Look at verse number nine.

1091. And the Lord said unto Joshua, he go

1092. Joshua obeys. He does what God has told

1093. them to do. They circumcise all of the

1094. men. In verse number nine, and the Lord

1095. said unto Joshua, "This day have I

1096. rolled away the reproach of Egypt from

1097. you. Wherefore the name of the place is

1098. called Gilgal unto this day. Gilgal

  1099. literally means rolled away.

1100. And the children of Israel encamped in

1101. Gilgal and kept the Passover on the 14th

1102. day of the month at even in the plains

1103. of Jericho. And they did eat of the old

1104. corn of the land on the marorrow after

1105. the Passover and unleavened cakes and

1106. parched corn in the selfsame day. What

1107. what are we learning about here? Well,

1108. God God has brought them out brought

1109. them over the Jordan River. And now

1110. before they go into the promised land,

1111. he's going to give them a reminder by by

1112. these stones, by the name of this place

1113. that rolled away that they have been

1114. they are no longer slaves to e Egypt.

1115. Now, it's important when you when you

  1116. think about biblical typology

1117. to remember that Egypt all throughout

1118. the Bible is often a type of the world

1119. or of sin. So when he says, "I've rolled

1120. away the reproach of Egypt." For the

1121. nation of Israel, it was quite literal.

1122. um that their their parents and their

1123. grandparents had been in bondage in

1124. Egypt and now they're free and they're

1125. living in the land that God has given

1126. them. Literally, God had rolled away the

1127. reproach. Literally, God had delivered

1128. them from the slavery of Egypt. But for

1129. you and I and for the future generations

1130. of the nation of Israel after this

1131. point, it it was more of a spiritual

1132. application for them. that God had

1133. rolled away the reproach of their

1134. sinfulness. That God had rolled away the

1135. the guilt and the shame of of the world.

  1136. That's the picture of Egypt. It's

1137. usually a picture of the world or of sin

1138. in scripture. And these people are no

1139. longer slaves to the world. God had

1140. miraculously rolled away the baggage and

1141. the shame and the guilt and the pain of

1142. the past that came with Egypt. Egypt is

1143. done. Now, this is very important when

  1144. we're talking about holiness.

1145. Because you cannot be holy

1146. until your sin has been rolled away.

1147. Every year they would celebrate the

1148. Passover. You remember when the nation

1149. of Israel came out of Egypt way back in

1150. the book of Exodus? When they come out

1151. of the out of the Egyptian bondage, how

1152. did God deliver them? You remember how

1153. he did it? It was that 10th and final

1154. plague, right? And what did God command

1155. the people to do? He said, "I want you

1156. to go kill a spotless lamb and I want

1157. you to take the blood of that lamb and I

1158. want you to apply it to the doorpost of

1159. your house, both of the doorpost and

1160. then the top. And I want you to apply

1161. the blood of that lamb to the doorpost.

1162. And tonight, there's going to be a death

1163. angel that's going to pass through the

1164. land of Egypt. And every house that has

1165. the blood applied to them, that house

1166. will be spared. But every house that

1167. does not have the blood applied to the

1168. doorpost, that household will experience

1169. death. Right? It was a picture of what

1170. was to come. It was an eventual picture

1171. of what was to come on Calvary when

1172. Jesus Christ would die and shed his

1173. blood. And through his blood, we would

1174. be we would be saved. So every year

1175. after that first Passover, they're in

1176. Egypt. They came out of Egypt. They've

1177. wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.

1178. Every year they celebrated Passover.

1179. And they celebrated, they remembered

1180. this time, this great deliverance that

1181. God had brought them out of Egypt. And

1182. now before they go into the con into

1183. conquer the the land of Canaan, before

1184. they move into battle, they take time to

  1185. observe

1186. the Passover. They take time to remember

1187. that the blood had been applied.

1188. The application is very simple. There's

1189. much we could talk about with this, but

1190. I'm I'm not going to belabor the point.

1191. I'm just going to get right to the

1192. application this morning. And I want to

1193. report to you this morning that I am so

1194. glad for the day when the blood was

1195. applied to my account. Jesus Christ came

1196. and he lived on this earth and he died

1197. on that old rugged cross. And when he

1198. shed his blood, his blood got applied to

1199. the doorpost of my life. I called on the

1200. name of Jesus as an 8-year-old boy and

1201. that blood was applied to my life. So

1202. that now when the death angel, when the

1203. judgment of God looks at my life, when a

1204. righteous and a holy and a perfect God

1205. looks at me, he does not see all of my

1206. failures, he does not see my past, he

1207. does not see my sin, he passes over me

1208. when he sees the blood that was applied.

1209. And every person here this morning who

1210. has been saved by the blood of Jesus

1211. Christ, what can wash away my sin?

1212. Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can

1213. make me whole again? Nothing but the

1214. blood of Jesus. Oh, precious is the flow

1215. that makes me white as snow. No other

1216. fountain I know. It's nothing but the

1217. blood of Jesus. If you're saved this

1218. morning and you've called on the name of

1219. Jesus, then you do not have to live in

1220. bondage to your past, to your guilt, to

1221. your shame. The blood has been applied.

1222. Your sins are Gilgal. They are literally

1223. rolled away as far as the east is from

1224. the west. And you are justified. You are

1225. saved. Now, if you're not saved this

1226. morning, then you do live with guilt and

1227. you do live with shame

1228. because your sins have not been rolled

1229. away. The blood has not been applied.

1230. And book of Romans tells us that

1231. when you die, the judgment, the wages

1232. for your sin is death. that judgment of

1233. God, that death angel will take you and

1234. you will be eternally separated from God

1235. in a very real place called hell.

  1236. But

1237. you don't have to go to hell this

1238. morning. You should, but you don't have

  1239. to. I should, but I don't have to

1240. because of the blood of Jesus Christ.

1241. Bible says, "Whosoever shall call on the

1242. name of the Lord shall be saved." Well,

1243. I don't want to go to hell, Pastor John.

1244. Very good. You don't have to. It's as

1245. simple as you recognizing that you're on

1246. your way to hell and there's nothing you

1247. can do about it. You're a sinner. But if

1248. you will place your faith and trust in

1249. the finished work of Jesus Christ, call

1250. on the name of Jesus and say, "Lord, I

1251. want the blood applied to my life. I

1252. want the blood applied to my sin debt."

1253. Then the blood will be applied forever

1254. and ever and ever, and God will save

  1255. you.

1256. This is what they're celebrating. It is

  1257. the atonement for holiness.

1258. You can try and try and try and try to

1259. live a good life, but if you are not

1260. under the blood of Jesus Christ, you are

1261. not holy. You cannot go to heaven. We

1262. try in our culture to work our way to

1263. heaven. And you ask people, hey, are are

1264. you a good person? Oh, yes. And and I I

1265. have people tell me this when I ask them

1266. about going to heaven that, well, I hope

1267. I make it in. I hope I've done enough to

1268. make it in. I I try and do more good

1269. than I do bad. And I I really hope that

1270. when I get up there that that I'll be

1271. able to talk the angel into it and he'll

1272. let me pass on by. Friend, I I don't

1273. want to be mean or cruel this morning,

1274. but you ain't going to make it. That's

1275. not going to get you through. You can

1276. get baptized all you want. It's not

1277. going to get you through. You can give

1278. money in that offering plate all you

1279. want. It's not going to get you through.

1280. You cannot be holy unless you have been

1281. dunked in the blood of Jesus Christ.

1282. You have to be put under the blood for

1283. your sins to be rolled away. And the

1284. Bible tells us that our righteousness,

1285. our best good works, the very best that

1286. we can do to an almighty God who is so

1287. perfect and holy we can't comprehend it.

1288. Our best righteousness to him is filthy

  1289. rags.

  1290. Just dirt.

1291. That's why somebody had to come who was

1292. perfect. That's why God had to come. And

1293. he shed his perfect blood. He atoned. He

  1294. paid my sin debt

1295. with his own precious blood.

1296. And I remember the day as an

  1297. eight-year-old boy when I knelt down

1298. beside that couch and I said, "Jesus, I

  1299. don't want to go to hell. I know I'm a

1300. sinner. Would you please save me?" And I

1301. have been saved ever since. The blood

1302. was applied. So when you read about the

1303. Passover and them celebrating the

1304. Passover, you understand that what

1305. they're celebrating has nothing really

1306. to do with them, but it has everything

1307. to do with Almighty God, who made a way

1308. through his blood for us to have eternal

1309. life. Write down number three, and we'll

  1310. be finished this morning.

1311. Number three, in the last part of

1312. chapter 5, we see the adoration of

  1313. holiness.

1314. We have seen the activity of holiness,

1315. and we have seen the atonement for

1316. holiness. And now we see the adoration

  1317. of holiness.

1318. I want you to think about Joshua with me

1319. this morning. Let's read the verses

1320. first and then we'll talk about it.

1321. Verse 13 of chapter 5. And it came to

1322. pass. When Joshua was by Jericho that he

1323. lifted up his eyes, and he looked, and

1324. behold, there stood a man over against

1325. him with his sword drawn in hand. And

1326. Joshua went unto him and said, "Art thou

1327. for us or for our adversaries?"

1328. And he said, "Nay." But as captain of

1329. the host of the Lord am I now come.

1330. Joshua fell on his face to the earth and

1331. did worship and said unto him, Why saith

1332. my lord unto what? What sayaith my lord

1333. unto his servant? And the captain of the

1334. lord's host said unto Joshua, loose thy

1335. shoe from off thy foot, for the place

1336. where on thou standest is

  1337. holy.

1338. And Joshua did so. The adoration of

  1339. holiness is worship.

1340. We find Joshua. I can I can see the

1341. picture. You think about the events that

1342. have taken place. They've come across

1343. the Jordan River. They've circumcised

1344. all of the men. They've observed the

1345. Passover. And as the celebrations and

1346. the festivities are dying down and the

1347. men are healing up and things are moving

1348. right along and perhaps Joshua just

1349. escapes for a little bit and he goes off

  1350. by himself

1351. and he walks up on a little hilltop and

  1352. he looks

1353. to the west and 12 miles into the

1354. distance, he can see the silhouette of a

1355. walled city that is considered to be

1356. impenetrable, the city of Jericho.

1357. Joshua stands there by himself thinking

  1358. and perhaps praying, "Lord,

1359. when's it going to be time?

1360. How are we going to do it? What's your

  1361. plan?

1362. I I mean, I've got some ideas, Lord, if

1363. you want me to tell you my ideas. I can

1364. tell you what I was I was thinking.

1365. We're going to we're going to have to go

1366. conquer that city. Jericho's right

1367. there. We're going to have to go out

1368. there and we're going to have to defeat

1369. them. What do you have in mind?" And

1370. perhaps as Joshua's looking around, all

  1371. of a sudden, there's a man,

1372. sword drawn, ready to attack.

1373. And Joshua, showing us a picture of

1374. boldness and courage, confronts the man

  1375. immediately,

1376. perhaps startled by his sudden

1377. appearance. And Joshua says, "Are you

1378. for us or for our adversaries?" I can

1379. just Joshua is just ready to go.

1380. And Jesus answers him and says, "No,

1381. no, I'm from the armies of the Lord our

1382. God." This this individual that we see,

1383. this is what we call in theology, if you

1384. want the big term, we call it a

  1385. christophony.

1386. This is an Old Testament appearance of

1387. Jesus Christ in the flesh. It's a

1388. pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus. Jesus

1389. has not been born yet, but he appears on

1390. Earth before Joshua. And I want you to

1391. notice why we think that. I'll give you

1392. four reasons why this is Jesus in this

1393. text. Some people will argue it's not. I

1394. think it is. Number one, he commands the

1395. armies of the Lord. It literally says,

1396. "I am the commander of the armies of the

1397. Lord." Well, who commands the armies of

1398. the Lord? There's only one with that

1399. authority, and that's Jesus. He then he

1400. accepts the worship of Joshua. Joshua is

1401. going to fall down. In verse 14, Joshua

1402. falls on his face to the earth. Joshua

1403. recognizes him and he worships

1404. and Jesus receives that worship. If this

1405. was an angel, he would not have received

1406. the worship. If you're tracking with us

1407. in our study in Revelation on Wednesday

  1408. nights, we've seen already a couple

1409. times, and we'll see it again a couple

1410. more times that John, as he's writing

1411. this, tries to worship an angelic being.

1412. And the angels always correct John and

1413. say, "Don't worship me. Worship God."

1414. So, the angels refuse worship. But this

1415. individual receives the worship. And

1416. then also Joshua submits himself to this

1417. man. Joshua submits and he says, "Take

1418. off your shoes." and Joshua did so. The

1419. last four words of the chapter.

1420. And then notice in the fourth place that

1421. the man requests the same action of

1422. Joshua that God had asked of Moses. You

1423. remember years prior at the burning

1424. bush, God had told Moses from that bush,

1425. "Take off your shoes for the place where

1426. you stand is holy ground." And now in

1427. this moment, Jesus Christ looks at

1428. Joshua and says, take off your shoes.

1429. The place where you're standing is holy

  1430. ground.

1431. So I believe very confidently that this

1432. is a christophony. This is Jesus Christ

1433. has appeared in the flesh to Joshua.

1434. Here's what I want to give you as the

  1435. application.

1436. You cannot fight for God

1437. until you have fellowship with God.

1438. You cannot win a war until you worship.

1439. You cannot be holy until you meet with

1440. the one who is holiness.

1441. We get this idea that the Christian life

1442. is all about just surviving another day.

1443. I'm finished, babe. You can come

1444. whenever. We get this idea that the

1445. Christian life is just I'm going to push

1446. through. I'm going to make it through.

1447. I'm going to get up enough courage to go

  1448. through.

1449. And what we need to realize is that the

1450. Christian life is not about getting

1451. enough courage to just push on through.

1452. The Christian life is about falling down

1453. at the feet of the only one who can give

  1454. us what we need.

1455. You see, worship is where it begins.

1456. Before you ever get to the battle, you

1457. have got to prepare your heart.

1458. We prepare our heart and worship.

1459. Can I ask you, have you worshiped him

  1460. today?

1461. Well, I sang the song. That's not what I

1462. asked. I didn't ask if you sang a song.

  1463. Have you worshiped him?

  1464. Have you adored him?

1465. Have you listened and submitted to him

1466. and what he is calling you to do?

1467. Have you have you maybe been dabbling in

1468. sin and doing things that you shouldn't

1469. be doing and not obeying what you know

1470. the Bible teaches and and instead of

1471. listening to what God is saying, you've

1472. not been obedient. And this morning, the

1473. Holy Spirit touched your heart and said,

1474. "It's time to obey. Get that sin out of

1475. your life. Obey." You know what a great

1476. act of worship would be is come kneel

1477. down at an oldfashioned altar and say,

1478. "God, I'm sorry I've not been obedient.

1479. Today, I recommmit myself to obeying

1480. what the word of God is teaching me."

1481. Can I speak from my heart for two

  1482. minutes?

1483. As I look at this church, as I look at

1484. our community, I see a lack of holiness.

1485. There are people who go through the

  1486. motions.

1487. Listen, we're very good at being

  1488. Christians

1489. in our culture, aren't we?

1490. We We can wear the nice clothes and we

1491. can say the right things and we even can

  1492. sing the songs

1493. and we're very good at putting on a

1494. front, but then when we're by ourselves

1495. or when we're in the workplace or we're

1496. around that crowd, everything changes.

1497. And it's as if God is some distant

1498. distant being out there that that I only

  1499. talk to on Sundays.

1500. And we live like the world and we act

1501. like the world. And well, I'm not in

1502. jail, Pastor John. I hope that's not

  1503. your standard.

1504. We we we don't honor him. We don't obey

1505. him. And then we have the the audacity

  1506. to justify

1507. our way of living by saying, "I don't

1508. think the Bible says that when we

1509. haven't studied it and we haven't even

  1510. looked into it."

1511. And then we blame God when tragedy

1512. strikes. Well, I was trying to be a good

1513. person. And God says, "It's not about

1514. being a good person. I DON'T WANT YOU TO

1515. TRY AND be a GOOD PERSON. STOP TRYING TO

1516. BE A GOOD PERSON. JUST FALL IN love with

  1517. Jesus.

1518. Fall on your face before the son of God.

1519. Give him the worship and the adoration

1520. that he deserves. Get into the Bible

1521. that he's given you. Figure out what he

1522. wants for your life and do it by the

1523. grace of God. That's what he wants.

1524. Stop acting like a Christian and just

1525. love Jesus. Stop acting like a Baptist

1526. and just love Jesus. Stop acting like

1527. you've got to fix everything in your

1528. life and just love Jesus. Just trust

1529. him. What is he asking you to do? It may

1530. be painful. It may be uncomfortable. And

1531. it might not make a whole lot of sense.

1532. But if Jesus calls you to it, he will

1533. take you through it. He's trying to see

1534. if you'll just trust him. But we're too

1535. busy to trust him. We're too busy

1536. working our jobs and we're too busy

1537. taking care of family issues and we're

1538. too busy worrying and ftting about

  1539. everything going on.

1540. We won't even show up to church

  1541. faithfully.

1542. And then we turn around and say, "Oh,

  1543. yeah, I love Jesus.

  1544. Oh, I'm a I do my best." No, we're not.

1545. The New Testament says, "If you love

  1546. him, keep his commandments.

1547. Do what he's called you to do."

1548. There is a high priority of holiness,

1549. and it is non-existent in the modern

  1550. church.

1551. The modern churches just like ours all

1552. over this nation this morning just like

1553. ours will gather and we'll meet and

1554. they'll sing a couple of songs and

  1555. they'll go through a religious ritual.

1556. They'll do a little order of service.

1557. They'll go through everything and

1558. they'll leave and they won't think about

  1559. it again.

1560. Do you love God in your family, Dad? Do

1561. you love God enough to lead the family

1562. in devotions? Do you love him enough to

1563. teach your kids how to pray? Do you love

1564. Jesus enough to prioritize him in the

  1565. home?

1566. Do you love Jesus enough? Oh, this is

1567. going to this is going to mess people up

1568. if this gets out there, but I'm going to

1569. say it anyways. Do you love Jesus enough

1570. to prioritize the house of God over kids

  1571. sporting events?

1572. What's the thing in your life that has

1573. your attention? Are you worshiping him

1574. first or is it everything else in your

1575. life? and then if I have time and if I

1576. feel up to it and if I feel good enough

1577. then I'll go to church on Sunday. And we

1578. wonder why are we not seeing spiritual

1579. victories? Why are we not seeing God

1580. conquer? Why are we not seeing God heal

1581. people? Why is God not doing some great

  1582. things in my life?

  1583. Could it be?

1584. Could it be that we are so busy pleasing

1585. the flesh that we've forgotten we need

1586. to just bow down and worship?

1587. I'm not an expert on this, but I have a

1588. pretty good feeling that if we will take

1589. the time to do Joshua chapter 5,

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

1590. then when you face your Jericho,

  1591. you'll be prepared.

1592. But a lot of us try and face Jericho

  1593. without first worshiping,

1594. and we wonder why we get defeated.

1595. And this morning, I've just come to

1596. remind you that there is a high priority

  1597. to holiness.

1598. Live for him, love him, serve him,

1599. worship him. He alone is worthy. Father,

1600. I've done my best this morning to give

1601. you everything I have. I pray that you

1602. take the next few moments, take the word

1603. of God that I have done my best to

1604. present, and I pray you would apply it

1605. to the hearts of your people. Help us to

1606. do exactly what we need to do. Father,

1607. help every person here this morning to

  1608. obey

1609. right now in this moment. Help us to

1610. obey. Not to get concerned with what

1611. everybody else is doing or what anybody

1612. else would think, but but may we just

1613. obey what you're asking us to do on an

  1614. individual level.

1615. And I pray you'd bless these next few

1616. moments of prayer. Help us to recommmit

1617. ourselves to obedience and to worship,

1618. to rejoicing for what you've done for

1619. us. We ask in Jesus name. everyone

1620. standing all over the building this

1621. morning. She's going to play just a few

1622. verses. The altar is open.

1623. Let's let's just tell them we thank

1624. thank you. Maybe you just want to come

1625. down here and say, "Lord, thank you.

1626. I just want to worship you a minute. I

1627. just want to say thank you for a minute.

1628. You can come right now. You come on."

  1629. Maybe there's a sin. Maybe there's a

1630. spot in your life where you've not been

  1631. obedient.

1632. You say, "Lord, today I'm going to be

1633. obedient. Today I'm getting rid of that

1634. sin. Today I'm ending that battle. I

1635. will be obedient to whatever you're

  1636. asking me to do.

1637. Maybe there's someone here this morning

1638. who does not know for sure you're saved.

1639. Friend, if you're here right now and you

1640. don't know for sure you are saved, I

1641. plead with you right now. Would you come

1642. right down front right now and get my

1643. attention? Please, please, please. You

1644. need to be saved this morning. Ask Jesus

  1645. to forgive you.

  1646. Don't wait another minute. Don't delay.

  1647. Get it right.

1648. We'll take a few minutes and worship.

1649. You do what you need to do. Obey the

  1650. Lord. Mind the Lord.

1651. Spurgeon once used an illustration

1652. of a ship that was

1653. sitting in the harbor ready to go. The

1654. crew was on board. The packages were on

1655. board. Everything was ready. The wind

1656. was right. The weather was right.

1657. The time was right. Everything was ready

1658. to go. But yet the ship stayed in the

  1659. harbor,

  1660. did not move.

1661. Someone asked, "Why is the ship not

1662. going anywhere? You're going to miss

1663. your opportunity. You're going to miss

1664. your chance. Everything's right just

1665. now. Why is the ship not going

1666. anywhere?" And one of the crewmen said,

1667. "The captain is not yet on board."

1668. And I want to tell you, church, what we

1669. need is we need the captain of the ship

1670. to be on board with us.

1671. If we're going to win any spiritual

1672. victories, if this church is going to do

1673. anything at all for Jesus, we need the

1674. captain on board with us. If your family

1675. is going to go anywhere for Jesus, you

1676. need the captain on board with you.

  1677. Got to submit.

1678. Give him what we've got.

1679. And you may not have much, but he don't

1680. need much. He just needs what you got.

1681. Let's be obedient. Father, we love you

  1682. so very much.

1683. Thank you for your help this morning.

1684. Father, as we open the word of God, I

1685. pray that we would remember these

1686. things, we would think on these simple

1687. truths for the rest of this week.

  1688. Father,

1689. I need your help. Lord,

1690. I want the captain on the ship with me.

1691. Lord, I want to go with you and I do not

1692. want to go without you. I want you to go

1693. with our church. I want you to go with

  1694. these people.

1695. I pray that you would build your church

1696. here in this little community.

  1697. Not a church that's good at

1698. Christianity. Lord, help us to be a

1699. church that's bad at Christianity, but

  1700. we just love Jesus

  1701. with everything that we
