  1. Jesus name. Amen.

  2. Joshua chapter 7 this morning.

    Joshua 7 chapter mention

  3. If you

  4. I apologize and no, I don't apologize. I

  5. don't apologize at all. I'll just state

  6. if you came this morning looking to be

  7. greatly encouraged by a message, you

  8. should probably come back next week.

  9. Okay, I'll just say that on the front

  10. end so that you're aware. What I'm

  11. getting ready to preach to you, the

  12. passage I'm getting ready to preach to

  13. you is a strong portion of scripture.

  14. Its application is very strong to the

  15. church today. I don't want that to scare

  16. you though because what we need in our

  17. culture is strong preaching. Amen. We

  18. don't just need people who will tickle

  19. our ears and encourage us every week.

  20. Now, there's a time and a place for an

  21. encouraging motivational message.

  22. Today is a little bit more of a

  23. convicting message and I pray it will be

  24. convicting in your heart. I pray that

  25. you will allow the Holy Spirit to take

  26. the word of God and show you areas in

  27. your life that need cleaned up.

  28. I pray that you'll be receptive to the

  29. word. And don't don't be scared or shy

  30. away from that nudging of the Holy

  31. Spirit over the next 30 or 35 minutes as

  32. he touches your heart and says, "Hey,

  33. you need to get this right or you need

  34. to get that right." Respond to that Holy

  35. Spirit so that we can leave today clean

  36. and purified before our holy holy God.

  37. Here's the title of the message today.

  38. Achan

  39. don't do it.

  40. Achan

  41. don't

  42. do it.

  43. We come to Joshua chapter 7 this

    Joshua 7 chapter mention

  44. morning. I want to give you the context

  45. of where we are in our narrative as

  46. we're walking through the whole book of

  47. Joshua. The people of God have just

  48. concluded their conquering of the city

  49. of Jericho. You remember that? Remember

  50. there was the city of Jericho, this

  51. walled fortress and the people of Israel

  52. under the command of God went and six

  53. days they walked one time around the

  54. entire city of Jericho.

  55. On the seventh day they walked seven

  56. times around the city of Jericho. They

  57. did this in complete silence. They

  58. didn't say a word to one another. They

  59. just walked in silence and then they

  60. went back home. One time for six days,

  61. seven times on the seventh day. And on

  62. that seventh time around, on that

  63. seventh day, the priest blew the

  64. trumpets and the people all shouted and

  65. the walls came tumbling, crumbling down

  66. and the people of Israel, the nation of

  67. Israel went up into the city of Jericho

  68. and they conquered the city of Jericho.

  69. God gave them a great victory over the

  70. city of Jericho. God had promised a

  71. great victory. He delivered on his

  72. promise. He had given the people of

  73. Israel a very simple command. Your Bible

  74. is open to Joshua 7. Turn back one page,

  75. you may not even have to turn to Joshua

  76. 6.

  77. And verse 17 and verse 18, God gives

  78. them a very simple command

  79. as to how they are to respond to the

  80. stuff of Jericho.

  81. Look at what it says in verse 17. The

  82. city that is Jericho shall be accursed,

  83. even it and all that are therein to the

  84. Lord. Only Rahab the harlot shall live,

  85. we remember her. She and all that are in

  86. her house because she hid the messengers

  87. that we sent. Now, notice verse 18.

  88. And ye in any wise keep yourselves from

  89. the accursed thing. That is, don't touch

  90. their stuff.

  91. That's how we say it in Appalachian.

  92. That's how we say it in Hillsville, all

  93. right? Don't touch their stuff. Lest you

  94. make yourselves accursed when you take

  95. of the accursed thing and make the camp

  96. of Israel accursed and trouble it. God

  97. gives them a command, this command comes

  98. with a stern warning. You go into

  99. Jericho, I'm going to give you the

  100. victory, but don't touch anything that

  101. belongs to them.

  102. Now, God was not just trying to make the

  103. nation of Israel poor.

  104. Uh God had a purpose in this because

  105. when we get to Ai in chapter 7 or in

  106. chapter 8, God's going to allow them at

  107. the next city that they conquer to take

  108. the stuff. So, it wasn't that God was

  109. just trying to make them poor, but God

  110. was giving them a command to see if they

  111. would obey. Very simple. You I'm going

  112. to give you a great victory. I'm going

  113. to knock the walls down. You're going to

  114. have a great spiritual and and literal

  115. victory over Jericho. Just don't touch

  116. anything that belongs to them. Don't

  117. touch their stuff. Now, look at chapter

  118. 7 in verse number 1.

  119. It begins with a conjunction. You

  120. remember from English class what a

  121. conjunction was?

  122. It connects us to what came before. So,

  123. chapter 7 is directly connected

  124. to the battle of Jericho and what came

  125. before. Look at what it says in verse 1.

  126. But the children of Israel committed a

  127. trespass.

  128. That is that word trespass means a sin.

  129. In the accursed thing.

  130. For Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of

  131. Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of

  132. Judah, took

  133. of the accursed thing.

  134. And the anger of the Lord was kindled

  135. against the children of Israel.

  136. Have you ever watched somebody do

  137. something

  138. um

  139. for lack of a better word, you watch

  140. them do something stupid

  141. from afar?

  142. Um

  143. maybe a child or a grandchild and they

  144. asked you what your opinion was on a

  145. certain situation

  146. and you said, "I wouldn't do it."

  147. And then they did it.

  148. And you're thinking,

  149. Why? Why'd you even ask? Why'd you even

  150. ask what I thought?

  151. You watch somebody make a poor purchase

  152. that you know is going to come back and

  153. and and get them in the end. You watch

  154. them make a decision you know is not

  155. wise. They buy something that they

  156. shouldn't. They move somewhere that they

  157. shouldn't. They take a job that they

  158. shouldn't. They start a relationship

  159. that they shouldn't. And you know it's

  160. not a good idea.

  161. And maybe they didn't ask at all and you

  162. just sat back and you watch this

  163. these events transpire.

  164. And you think to yourself, if I could

  165. just get within earshot

  166. for 10 seconds,

  167. I would proclaim over their life as best

  168. as I know how.

  169. Individual,

  170. don't

  171. do it.

  172. This is not going to work out good. This

  173. is not what you think. This is not going

  174. to go the way you have it planned. Don't

  175. do it.

  176. I was not there when obviously when the

  177. nation of Israel conquered Jericho.

  178. I did not see Achan go into the little

  179. house and take the stuff that belonged

  180. to the the people of Jericho.

  181. I don't know if anybody saw him to be

  182. honest.

  183. But if I had been there,

  184. and if I had saw him

  185. from a distance, I see him go into the

  186. house and he takes the stuff,

  187. and he slips around the corner and he's

  188. making sure nobody's watching him. I

  189. hope and I want to believe that from my

  190. position, my vantage point, I WOULD HAVE

  191. SAID, "ACHAN, DON'T [screaming]

  192. DO IT."

  193. IT'S FOOLISH.

  194. It is not wise.

  195. Put it back.

  196. Don't sin.

  197. But I wasn't there.

  198. But I am here.

  199. And you are here this morning.

  200. And so this morning as your pastor, I

  201. want to proclaim

  202. the very best way I know how.

  203. Christian,

  204. brother,

  205. sister,

  206. don't

  207. do it.

  208. Don't sin

  209. against our God.

  210. That thing that you

  211. are having trouble with, that besetting

  212. sin that continuously comes up in your

  213. life, that temptation that you have,

  214. that thing that's always getting you

  215. down and you always feel defeated by it.

  216. Can I tell you how to have victory over

  217. sin this morning? Don't do it. Stay away

  218. from it, get rid of it, run from it,

  219. don't entertain temptation. You remember

  220. Joseph when he went was it

  221. uh uh working for Potiphar and

  222. Potiphar's wife grabbed him by the coat

  223. and said, "Come lay with me, Joseph."

  224. What does Joseph do? He leaves his coat

  225. and he runs out the door. "I'm not going

  226. to entertain it. I'm not going to dwell

  227. in it. I am not going to do it."

  228. I wish somebody would have hollered at

  229. Achan.

  230. Achan,

  231. don't do it.

  232. And this morning, it is my job as the

  233. pastor of this church

  234. to preach against sin.

  235. So, don't be uncomfortable this morning.

  236. Embrace the text of scripture.

  237. And allow your pastor to proclaim over

  238. your life the very best as I can.

  239. Don't

  240. do it. Look at the text.

  241. Verse number one again.

  242. But the children of Israel committed a

  243. trespass

  244. in the accursed thing for Achan, the son

  245. of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of

  246. Zerah, of the tribe of Judah took of the

  247. accursed thing, and the anger of the

  248. Lord was kindled against the children of

  249. Israel. I want you to write down number

  250. one from verse number one, the

  251. committing of sin.

  252. The committing of sin.

  253. So, this man named Achan directly

  254. disobeys the clear instruction of

  255. Almighty God and commits a sin.

  256. He does exactly what God told him not to

  257. do. God said, "Achan, don't take the

  258. stuff. Don't touch their stuff." And

  259. Achan decided that it was a good idea to

  260. touch the stuff. He thought it was a

  261. good idea to take the stuff.

  262. And perhaps you're thinking, "Achan,

  263. come on, man.

  264. It's not that It wasn't that hard.

  265. Just leave it alone. God's going to give

  266. you more riches and wealth than you can

  267. know what to do with when you get to Ai

  268. in just a few days.

  269. Just be patient. Wait on God. Don't

  270. disobey, Achan. How foolish can you be,

  271. Achan?"

  272. But before we become too judgmental of

  273. Achan and his committing of sin, I want

  274. to remind us this morning that you and I

  275. are Achan.

  276. In fact, I heard a statement recently in

  277. the last week, and I apologize to

  278. whoever I heard this from. I cannot

  279. remember where I read it or heard it.

  280. It's not my statement. Here's what they

  281. said, "I am akin

  282. to Achan."

  283. I almost titled the message that this

  284. morning.

  285. I am akin

  286. to Achan. We like to judge people who

  287. sin when it's not us doing the sinning,

  288. right? "Oh, look at them. Look at what

  289. they have done. I can't believe they

  290. would go there. I can't believe they

  291. would do that. I can't believe they

  292. would partake in that. I can't believe

  293. that's a habit for them. I can't believe

  294. they're messed up like that." And we

  295. look at Achan and we look at his life

  296. and we say, "Achan, why would you do

  297. that? What God clearly said don't touch

  298. the stuff. And now you show up and you

  299. think it's okay to touch the stuff. Oh,

  300. Achan, how foolish can you be?" And I

  301. say to us, church, how foolish can we

  302. be? Because just as Achan directly

  303. disobeyed the commands of God, so you

  304. and I, every single one of us this

  305. morning, directly disobey the commands

  306. of our God. Do we not?

  307. Any person who's here this morning or

  308. watching later at home

  309. who says, as I'm preaching this right

  310. now, "Well, he's just young.

  311. He doesn't understand. I'm a pretty good

  312. Christian. I think I'm all right,

  313. actually. I think I'm doing pretty good

  314. when I think about all of I mean, you

  315. put all of that together, I'm I'm

  316. honestly coming out okay.

  317. Friend, if you think you're a religious

  318. enough, if you think that you are okay

  319. when it comes to the topic of sin, you

  320. no doubt have more sin than anyone else

  321. in the room.

  322. It is the sin of religious hypocrisy

  323. that God hates.

  324. And to think that you can come into a

  325. church building and you can sit in a pew

  326. and you can listen to a sermon and say

  327. that doesn't apply to me. He's preaching

  328. on sin and I don't have no sin. Friend,

  329. you are in a desperate place. You need

  330. to fall on your face before God this

  331. morning and say, "Please forgive me of

  332. my sin."

  333. Here's all I'm trying to tell you this

  334. morning. Achan committed a sin, you and

  335. I commit sin. I can't go to the rest of

  336. the sermon. I can't preach the rest of

  337. the message today until we're all on the

  338. same page and we understand this message

  339. is for me.

  340. Right?

  341. It's not for the other person, it's not

  342. for the the lost person, it's it's not

  343. just for the drunkard, it's not just for

  344. the the the addict, it's not just for

  345. the the marriage that's fallen apart,

  346. it's not just for the person who curses

  347. all the time, it's not just for the lazy

  348. person or the bitter person, it's for

  349. all of us this morning. You understand?

  350. Don't think about anybody else this

  351. morning. You must think about yourself

  352. and say, "I am akin to Achan. That's

  353. me."

  354. Not judging him for his foolish

  355. decision. Was it foolish? Absolutely.

  356. And I do the same.

  357. And you do the same.

  358. As your pastor this morning, the pastor

  359. of a church, can you believe a pastor

  360. has sin in his life?

  361. Oh, listen, friends, I'm constantly

  362. confessing sin before God. Constantly

  363. coming before the throne of grace and

  364. saying, "Oh God, I failed again.

  365. I messed up again."

  366. Why? Because I am akin to Achan. Achan

  367. was a human, I'm a human. I have the

  368. same flesh, sin nature that Achan had

  369. and it could just as easily have been me

  370. stealing that stuff.

  371. It could have just as easily been you.

  372. So, I want you to identify yourself as

  373. Achan this morning. I want you to think

  374. about the sin

  375. that is in your life.

  376. And then we can go to number two.

  377. Number one, the committing of sin.

  378. Number two,

  379. we see the consequences of sin. Look at

  380. verse number two.

  381. Direct consequence of Achan's sin. And

  382. Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai.

  383. Joshua does not know that this has

  384. happened.

  385. He's going on to the next battle. He's

  386. ready to win another victory.

  387. He's trusting God. He's moving forward.

  388. Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai,

  389. which is beside Bethaven on the east

  390. side of Bethel

  391. and spake unto them, saying, "Go up and

  392. view the country." And the men went up

  393. and viewed Ai. He's going to send some

  394. spies, much like he did to Jericho. He's

  395. going to send some spies to Ai.

  396. They're going to go see what it's all

  397. about. See how easy or difficult this

  398. battle might be.

  399. They come back in verse three and they

  400. returned to Joshua and said unto him,

  401. "Let not all the people go up,

  402. but let about two or three thousand men

  403. go up and smite Ai.

  404. And make not all the people to labor

  405. thither, for they are but few." The men

  406. come back to Joshua and they bring a

  407. report. They say the the city of Ai is

  408. much smaller than Jericho. It's not

  409. nearly as well fortified as Jericho. We

  410. don't need to send all of our military

  411. up there. Just send two or three

  412. thousand men. We'll go up. God is with

  413. us. We'll make short work of Ai. Don't

  414. worry about it, Joshua. We just need a

  415. few. They're not a very big city. This

  416. is a piece of cake. Look at verse number

  417. four.

  418. So, there went up thither. Again,

  419. remember, they have no idea what Achan

  420. has done. You and I do because God put

  421. it in verse one, but they do not.

  422. Verse four, so there went up thither of

  423. the people about 3,000 men and they fled

  424. before the men of Ai and the men of Ai

  425. smote them about 30 and six men for they

  426. chased them from before the gate even

  427. unto Shebarim and smote them in the

  428. going down. Wherefore the hearts of the

  429. people melted and became as water.

  430. What what what what just happened? We

  431. just had an amazing victory in Jericho.

  432. We go to take the small little city of

  433. Ai and they

  434. whip us.

  435. 36 men die. The rest of us are running

  436. home scared to death. And they come

  437. running back into the camp at Israel and

  438. the Bible says the people's heart

  439. melted.

  440. I don't know what they would have

  441. thought in that moment.

  442. Perhaps I thought I would have thought,

  443. God?

  444. What in the world?

  445. You promised victory. You promised if we

  446. did it your way, you would have give us

  447. victory. We we did it just like you

  448. wanted. WE WE TRIED EVERYTHING. We we we

  449. where's we what did we do wrong? Why are

  450. we defeated?

  451. What happened?

  452. It's the direct consequence of a sin.

  453. They got to get to the bottom of it.

  454. The sin of Achan cost him and it cost

  455. those around him greatly.

  456. There's a statement that's been oft

  457. repeated. I do not know who originally

  458. said it. It's it's very popular. You

  459. probably heard it before.

  460. If you've not heard it, you should write

  461. it down.

  462. The statement says this, sin will take

  463. you further than you want to go,

  464. keep you longer than you want to stay,

  465. and cost you more than you want to pay.

  466. It will take you further than you want

  467. to go, keep you longer than you want to

  468. stay, and cost you more than you want to

  469. pay.

  470. Here's Achan. He has stolen the stuff.

  471. He has disobeyed God's command. He's put

  472. it into his tent. He's hidden it from

  473. the people around him, and then he's off

  474. to the next battle.

  475. And they lose.

  476. And the people begin to murmur and say

  477. what happened. I thought God was with

  478. us. And Achan in his soul knows it's his

  479. fault.

  480. He has disobeyed, directly disobeyed the

  481. commands of God. Achan learned the hard

  482. way.

  483. An entire nation loses a battle, 36 men

  484. lose their life because one man had

  485. sinned.

  486. Israel could not be defeated by her

  487. enemies, but they have just proved that

  488. they could defeat themselves through

  489. disobedience.

  490. Listen,

  491. the devil has no power over you this

  492. morning.

  493. Your enemy cannot defeat you.

  494. The Holy Spirit of God lives on the

  495. inside of you. He's bigger and stronger

  496. than the devil can ever hope to be. The

  497. devil cannot defeat you this morning,

  498. but you absolutely can defeat yourself

  499. by allowing sin to rule in your life.

  500. And maybe this morning in your life you

  501. have been facing a battle and you've

  502. been wondering, God,

  503. I thought you promised victory.

  504. I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU WERE WITH ME. And

  505. it just feels like I'm in the middle of

  506. this battle and there's no victory.

  507. And there's no hope and there's no

  508. relief.

  509. Friend, can I encourage you this

  510. morning? Take some time

  511. to look into your heart

  512. and pray what the psalmist wrote.

  513. Psalm 139, search me, oh God, and know

  514. me.

  515. Try me and see if there be any wicked

  516. way in me and lead me in the way

  517. everlasting.

  518. This is what Joshua does.

  519. So, we see the consequence of sin. I

  520. have to move along. Number three, write

  521. this down, on correction of sin.

  522. So, if there is sin that is found in our

  523. life, what do we do about it?

  524. Okay, so so I understand that there's

  525. committing of sin. We're all guilty of

  526. committing sin and and then there is the

  527. consequences that come with sin, but

  528. is there any hope? What can I do? Well,

  529. notice a few things.

  530. Verse number five, excuse me, verse

  531. number six down through verse number 15,

  532. there's a few steps that we can learn.

  533. Joshua went rent his clothes and fell to

  534. the earth upon his face

  535. before the ark of the Lord until

  536. eventide, he and the elders of Israel

  537. and put dust on their heads.

  538. Joshua said, "Alas, oh Lord God,

  539. wherefore hast thou at all brought this

  540. people over Jordan to deliver us into

  541. the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.

  542. Would to God we had been content and

  543. dwelt on the other side of Jordan? Oh

  544. Lord, what will I say when Israel

  545. turneth their backs from before their

  546. enemies? For the Canaanites and all the

  547. inhabitants of the land shall hear of it

  548. and shall environ us round and cut off

  549. our name from the earth, and what wilt

  550. thou do unto thy great name?" Joshua

  551. comes very honestly and boldly before

  552. God.

  553. We see in verse six down through verse

  554. number nine, Joshua's prayer.

  555. Verse number six, he rends he rends his

  556. clothes

  557. and he falls on the earth on his face

  558. before God.

  559. Here's the problem with many Christians

  560. today.

  561. We understand and we agree with the fact

  562. that we have sin

  563. and we look around us and we see the

  564. consequences of sin

  565. and we're okay with it.

  566. When's the last time

  567. you knelt down on your knees? I'm not

  568. talking praying before your food.

  569. I'm talking you messed up.

  570. You fell again

  571. and you became so broken over it

  572. that you knelt on your knees

  573. and bowed before a holy God and said,

  574. "I'm sorry."

  575. Most Christians have never done that.

  576. And we wonder why there's no spiritual

  577. victory in the church.

  578. We wonder why there there's no spiritual

  579. victories in our families. We wonder why

  580. there's no spiritual victories in our

  581. homes.

  582. Could it have something to do with the

  583. fact that we have sinned before our God

  584. and we are okay living with the

  585. consequences?

  586. This is the danger of living in a first

  587. world country, right?

  588. Because we are rich and increased with

  589. goods and as long as our flesh is

  590. satisfied, we can put our spirit in the

  591. closet.

  592. We can stuff the Holy Spirit away. We

  593. don't have to listen. We'll go to

  594. church. We'll check our box and we'll go

  595. back home and we'll we'll be fine

  596. because I've got food on the table and a

  597. roof over my head and a job that pays

  598. the bills, so I'm just going to keep

  599. going through the motions.

  600. And one day we wake up at rock bottom

  601. and things start falling apart and we

  602. have the audacity to blame God for not

  603. showing up in our trial.

  604. When he's been there all along, we

  605. ignored him, had no brokenness over our

  606. sin, had no brokenness over our

  607. laziness, had no prayerfulness over what

  608. we had done to his heart.

  609. Could it be

  610. that if God's people would humble

  611. themselves and kneel before the throne

  612. of grace in humility and true

  613. brokenness,

  614. could we see revival

  615. in our day?

  616. Is it possible

  617. to see God build a great church in our

  618. community?

  619. We've become so accustomed to the motion

  620. of religion.

  621. Where we just do the right things and we

  622. say the right things and we make sure we

  623. don't say the wrong things in front of

  624. the right people and we we just got to

  625. make sure that we're at church on Sunday

  626. morning so nobody comes asking

  627. questions.

  628. And there is no repentance.

  629. And there's no brokenness.

  630. We've got to be broken over our sin.

  631. Otherwise, there's no spiritual victory.

  632. I don't know about you. Listen, I am not

  633. okay without spiritual victory. There

  634. are a lot of churches who might be okay.

  635. There may be some pastors who are okay.

  636. There's probably a lot of church members

  637. who are okay living outside of spiritual

  638. victory because like I said, they have

  639. everything that their flesh needs.

  640. That's not enough for me.

  641. And I hope it's not enough for you this

  642. morning.

  643. Would to God that we would become like

  644. Joshua.

  645. Become broken

  646. over our sin. Then in verse 10 through

  647. 12, Israel's problem. We already

  648. mentioned this. I'll just read the

  649. verses for you.

  650. Israel has sinned, God said. Verse 11.

  651. Israel has sinned and they have

  652. transgressed my covenant which I

  653. commanded them for they have taken of

  654. the accursed thing and have stolen and

  655. disassembled also and they have put it

  656. even among their own stuff.

  657. Therefore, the children of Israel could

  658. not stand before their enemies. Listen,

  659. you got sin in your life, you cannot

  660. stand before your enemies.

  661. Don't defeat yourself. But they turned

  662. their backs before their enemies because

  663. they were accursed. Neither will I be

  664. with you anymore. What a What a

  665. statement.

  666. God said, I am not going with you. I'm

  667. done until you get this cleaned up.

  668. I wonder how many churches in America

  669. are living right there and they don't

  670. even know it.

  671. God has said, I'm done with them until

  672. they get this mess cleaned up.

  673. And they don't even know it cuz they got

  674. screens and lights and a and a and a fun

  675. preacher, a motivational speaker, and a

  676. great music team, and they come together

  677. every week and they go through the

  678. motion of religion, and they don't even

  679. realize

  680. that the presence of God has left.

  681. How many homes

  682. how many children are growing up in

  683. homes where mom and dad go to church,

  684. but there is no presence of the Holy

  685. Spirit in the home through the week?

  686. They just go through the motions. Yeah,

  687. we're religious.

  688. It's It's a thing that mom and dad do.

  689. It's a thing that grandma and grandpa

  690. do.

  691. There's no presence. God says, "I'm done

  692. with them until they get this sin out of

  693. their life."

  694. How many individuals

  695. are so rich and increased with goods

  696. that they live their life and they work

  697. their job and they pay their bills

  698. and they go through the motions without

  699. the presence of God in their life. Do

  700. you know that the blessings you are

  701. missing when God's presence does not go

  702. with you?

  703. They're unimaginable.

  704. Unimaginable.

  705. Israel's got a problem, but God's got a

  706. solution. Verse 13 through 15, God's

  707. purifying.

  708. Look at what God says in verse 13. He

  709. said, "Joshua, get up."

  710. Get up.

  711. Sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify

  712. yourselves against tomorrow."

  713. For thus saith the Lord God of Israel,

  714. there is an accursed thing in the midst

  715. of thee, O Israel. Thou canst not stand

  716. before thine enemies until you take away

  717. the accursed thing from among you. In

  718. the morning, therefore, you shall be

  719. brought before the your tribes, and it

  720. shall be that

  721. the tribe which the Lord taketh shall

  722. come according to the families thereof,

  723. and the family which the Lord shall take

  724. shall come by households, and the

  725. household which the Lord shall take

  726. shall come man by man. And it shall be

  727. that he that has taken with the accursed

  728. thing shall be burnt with fire, he and

  729. all that he hath because he hath

  730. transgressed the covenant of the Lord

  731. and because he hath wrought folly in

  732. Israel. God's got a plan for the

  733. purifying process. Now, this plan in in

  734. the book of Joshua chapter 7 is a

    Joshua 7 chapter mention

  735. picture and and there it's a very stark

  736. contrast. God is clarifying. He is

  737. demanding that his people will be holy.

  738. There are often times in scripture, I

  739. don't want you to be confused by this.

  740. There are often times in scripture where

  741. God does something as a precedent to

  742. picture his holiness. That's what's

  743. happening here.

  744. God is saying, "Hey, wherever there is

  745. sin,

  746. there's going to be judgment for that

  747. sin." That's still true today.

  748. You say, "Well, God's not going to catch

  749. me on fire." If you die without having

  750. received Jesus Christ as your savior,

  751. you will absolutely burn with fire for

  752. your sins.

  753. Right?

  754. Hell is a very real place.

  755. And it is a burning place.

  756. And God is setting a precedent. He's

  757. saying, "I will be holy." Now, there's a

  758. way, Joshua, for you to purify the camp.

  759. There's a way for you to fix this,

  760. but you're going to have to burn the sin

  761. with fire.

  762. So, notice what happens next. Write down

  763. number three. I'm moving along. Verse

  764. number 16 through verse number Excuse

  765. me,

  766. um I said number three, I mean point

  767. number four. Verse 16 through verse 23,

  768. there's the cleansing of sin. God's

  769. given them the the way to cleanse it.

  770. Let's read these verses. I'm just

  771. reading the narrative to you. This is

  772. This is not me being mean. I hope you

  773. don't take this this way. This is the

  774. Bible.

  775. Look at verse 16.

  776. So, Joshua rose up early in the morning

  777. and brought Israel by their tribes. The

  778. tribe of Judah was taken.

  779. And he brought the family of Judah and

  780. he took the family of the Zerahites.

  781. And he brought the family of the

  782. Zerahites man by man.

  783. Zabdi was taken.

  784. He brought the household man by man. Can

  785. you imagine the

  786. defeat

  787. that that father Zabdiel feels

  788. when his family is taken and he realizes

  789. it is his family

  790. that has caused all this.

  791. Zabdiel the son of Zerah was taken,

  792. tribe of Judah was taken.

  793. Verse number 18, he brought his

  794. household man by man and Achan the son

  795. of Carmi, the son of Zabdiel, the son of

  796. Zerah of the tribe of Judah was taken.

  797. Joshua said unto Achan, "My son, give I

  798. pray thee glory to the Lord God of

  799. Israel and make confession unto him and

  800. tell me now what thou hast done. Hide it

  801. not from me."

  802. And Achan answered Joshua and said,

  803. "Indeed, I have sinned against the Lord

  804. God of Israel and thus and thus have I

  805. done. When I saw among the spoils a

  806. goodly Babylonian garment and 200

  807. shekels of silver and a wedge of gold of

  808. 50 shekels weight

  809. he said, "Then I coveted them and I took

  810. them and behold, they are hid in the

  811. earth in the midst of my tent and the

  812. silver is under it."

  813. So, Joshua sent messengers and they ran

  814. under the tent and behold, it was hid in

  815. his tent and the silver under it.

  816. And they took them out of the midst of

  817. the tent and brought them unto Joshua

  818. and unto all the children of Israel and

  819. laid them out before the Lord. Number

  820. four this morning, the cleansing of sin.

  821. The only reason that Israel was able to

  822. be purified is because they obeyed God's

  823. method of cleansing.

  824. God wants to cleanse you and I of our

  825. sin just as he wanted to cleanse the

  826. nation of Israel of their sin.

  827. How do you and I get cleansed from our

  828. sin? First John 1:9 says, "If we confess

    1 John 1:9

  829. with If we confess our sin, he is

  830. faithful

  831. and just to forgive us our sin and

  832. cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

  833. Cleansing can be found this morning.

  834. Pastor John, I don't want to admit what

  835. I've done.

  836. I don't want to tell anybody what I've

  837. done. I'm ashamed that I have

  838. participated in the actions that I've

  839. participated in.

  840. This morning as you have spoken, the

  841. Holy Spirit has touched my life and I am

  842. so ashamed that I have sinned against a

  843. holy God. What do I do now?

  844. In just a moment, we're going to take a

  845. time to pray.

  846. And I'm going to invite you to come

  847. and bow humbly before a holy God

  848. and just be honest with him as honest as

  849. you've ever been and say, "God,

  850. I messed up again

  851. and I don't want to keep messing up.

  852. I'm confessing my sin. I'm forsaking my

  853. sin. Will you please clean me up?"

  854. The Bible says he is faithful and just

  855. to forgive us of all of our uncleanness,

  856. all of our sins. When Jesus died on the

  857. cross, he did not just die for some of

  858. your sins. He died for all of your sins.

  859. You realize your sins have already been

  860. paid for. If you're saved this morning,

  861. you're on your way to heaven, your sins

  862. are paid for.

  863. So, why don't you just come confess

  864. them? Say, "Hey, I messed up again

  865. and I'm real sorry."

  866. And let's get broken over what we have

  867. done. You can come. I've got one more

  868. point and we'll be finished.

  869. Number five,

  870. the crushing

  871. of sin.

  872. Look at verse 24. What happens?

  873. Joshua and all Israel with him took

  874. Achan, the son of Zerah,

  875. and the silver, and the garment, and the

  876. wedge of gold, and his sons, and his

  877. daughters, and his oxen,

  878. and his asses, and his sheep, and his

  879. tent, and all that he had,

  880. they brought them unto the Valley of

  881. Achor.

  882. And Joshua said, "Why has you Why have

  883. you troubled us?

  884. The Lord shall trouble thee this day."

  885. And all Israel stoned him with stones

  886. and burned them with fire

  887. after they had stoned them with stones.

  888. And they raised over him a great heap of

  889. stones unto this day, so the Lord turned

  890. from the fierceness of his anger.

  891. Wherefore the name of that place was

  892. called the Valley of Achor unto this

  893. day.

  894. The chapter concludes

  895. with the people of God stoning Achan,

  896. burning him, and piling a heap of stones

  897. on top of him.

  898. Here's the picture

  899. God is painting

  900. for generations to come.

  901. Sin

  902. will not

  903. be tolerated.

  904. God is not a God who dabbles with sin.

  905. God is not a God who plays with sin or

  906. excuses sin. Politicians may play with

  907. it.

  908. Laws may excuse it.

  909. But God will not tolerate sin among his

  910. people.

  911. He is a holy, holy, holy God.

  912. The word holy literally means separated.

  913. What is God separated from? He is thrice

  914. separated from sin.

  915. He can't look at it.

  916. He can't think on it. He can't be

  917. entertained by it.

  918. He hates sin.

  919. So, God gives very clear instructions to

  920. the nation of Israel.

  921. Take Achan.

  922. Take him outside of the gates of the

  923. community.

  924. Stone him to death.

  925. Burn him with fire, and then pile a heap

  926. of stones on top of him.

  927. Here's what God's saying.

  928. Kill the sin.

  929. And church this morning, if we want to

  930. see God give us spiritual victories in

  931. this place,

  932. from my heart,

  933. lovingly as I know how, I plead with

  934. you,

  935. kill

  936. the sin.

  937. Crush it.

  938. Get rid of it.

  939. It has no place

  940. in the life of a Christian.

  941. It has no place in the LIFE OF A CHURCH

  942. MEMBER.

  943. Stop being religious and start loving

  944. Jesus enough to make some sacrifices.

  945. You don't think this hurt the nation of

  946. Israel?

  947. Achan is their friend.

  948. They went to war with Achan.

  949. They loved this man. He was their

  950. brother.

  951. And they had to say goodbye because

  952. their holiness before God was more

  953. important than any relationship they had

  954. on earth.

  955. Oh, that people today would have that

  956. mindset.

  957. That what God thinks about me is more

  958. important than anything anyone else

  959. thinks about me.

  960. And this getting this right, whatever it

  961. sin it is in your life, it may hurt a

  962. little bit.

  963. It may bring some pain.

  964. You may have to tell somebody goodbye.

  965. You may have to stop doing something

  966. that you have done for years, and it

  967. might hurt a little bit. It might create

  968. a hole in your life, but listen, there

  969. is no hole created by sin that the

  970. savior cannot fill.

  971. So, tell it bye.

  972. Crush it.

  973. Kill it. Burn it. Get rid of it.

  974. What does this mean? Very practically,

  975. can I be extremely practical for 2

  976. minutes?

  977. Sir,

  978. you might need to throw away your

  979. iPhone.

  980. You may need to get rid

  981. of the computer.

  982. It's not worth it. Kill it.

  983. Ma'am,

  984. you may need to take a break from social

  985. media.

  986. It's giving you anxiety. it's giving you

  987. depression, you're constantly comparing

  988. yourself with others. Just delete it.

  989. Crush it.

  990. I'm not going to entertain sin.

  991. Christian, it might be time to throw out

  992. the alcohol.

  993. THAT BAD HABIT YOU HAVE,

  994. end it today.

  995. The words that come out of your mouth

  996. when something doesn't go right, your

  997. response that you say that first word,

  998. stop using it. Just determine today, I'M

  999. NOT GOING TO SAY that anymore. I'm going

1000. to talk like a Christian.

1001. I will not entertain sin.

1002. The desire that you have that is not

  1003. right,

  1004. get rid of it.

1005. The bitterness that holds you bondage

1006. this morning, confess it and get it

  1007. right.

1008. The anger that you struggle with,

1009. that you feel towards that individual

  1010. that wronged you,

1011. forgive them. Get rid of the anger.

1012. Confess it, forsake it. The anxiety and

1013. depression that control you so often,

1014. repent and find freedom this morning.

  1015. Kill it, crush it.

1016. The lackadaisical spirit that you have,

1017. repent and get right. That gossiping

1018. spirit that you have, repent and go

1019. apologize to the person you've been

  1020. talking about.

  1021. I could go on

  1022. and on and on.

  1023. I don't know

1024. what sin is in your life this morning,

1025. but I know this, we all have a sin.

1026. We've all got something we struggle

  1027. with.

1028. We've all got something that constantly

  1029. tempts us.

1030. I wonder what would happen

1031. if today, a random Sunday in the month

1032. of May on a little hill

  1033. in Carroll County, Virginia.

1034. I wonder what would happen if there were

1035. some people of God who said, "Today,

1036. I'm going to get serious about loving

  1037. Jesus."

  1038. And if Jesus says,

1039. "Don't do it." Today, it stops.

1040. What would happen to our church?

1041. What would happen to our community?

1042. What would happen to your family

1043. if you stopped playing the games of sin?

  1044. Christian,

  1045. don't

  1046. do it.

  1047. Stop it.

  1048. Crush it.

  1049. Kill it.

1050. Maybe somebody in here needs to get some

  1051. accountability today.

1052. I need somebody to be my accountability

1053. partner. They can check in on me and

1054. help me get victory over this sin.

1055. Listen, God created brothers and sisters

1056. in Christ for a reason, so that we can

1057. help one another. Don't try and fight it

1058. on your own. Get some accountability.

  1059. That's a great step. You hear me? That's

1060. a great step in showing God that you are

1061. serious about ending this is finding

  1062. some other human being

  1063. say, "Help me.

1064. I am sick and tired of living defeated

  1065. by the sin.

1066. I want some spiritual victory.

  1067. So, today,

  1068. I crush it.

  1069. I was not there

1070. when Achan stole the stuff.

1071. But if I had been,

1072. oh, how I wish I would have been

1073. in love with Jesus enough

  1074. to say, "Achan,

  1075. don't do it.

  1076. I wasn't there, but I'm here.

1077. And this morning I love him enough and I

1078. love you enough to stand before you and

  1079. say, "Christian,

  1080. don't do it."

1081. Would you stand to your feet all over

  1082. the building, Father?

1083. Thank you for your help this morning. I

1084. pray your word would touch the hearts of

  1085. your people.
