  1. If I don't have Jesus, I don't have

  2. anything. But with Jesus, I have

  3. everything. Amen. He is everything to

  4. me.

  5. Take your Bibles and join me this

  6. morning in Joshua 8.

  7. Father, we love you. I love you, Lord,

  8. and I need you now. I pray you'd help me

  9. as we open your word for a few moments.

  10. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, Father. I

  11. pray

  12. pour out yourself on this place so that

  13. not one of us can leave the same way we

  14. came today.

  15. Lord, I pray that through the preaching

  16. of your word, you would revive our

  17. hearts today.

  18. Help us to be more close to you than

  19. we've ever been. And may you receive all

  20. the glory and the honor through

  21. everything that's done.

  22. We love you. We ask these things in

  23. Jesus name. Amen. I want to preach this

  24. morning on th this thought. Two little

  25. words that is really a followup to last

  26. week's message. Last week we talked

  27. about fear not.

  28. And this week I want to preach on fear

  29. God. We talked about what we're not

  30. supposed to fear last Sunday. But this

  31. morning I want to talk about who we are

  32. supposed to fear. We are to fear God. At

  33. just the mention of the title, some of

  34. you have already said in your mind, "Oh

  35. yeah, I do that." And I would agree with

  36. you that you probably do fear God in

  37. some way. But most of us do not fear God

  38. in the biblical way. I'm a very

  39. practical person. I could give you deep

  40. theological uh explanations or

  41. definitions of what it means to fear

  42. God, but I want to help you this

  43. morning. I preach practical because I

  44. want to give you something you can hang

  45. on to. So, let me give you three

  46. practical steps. This is my

  47. introduction. I want you to write down

  48. three practical steps, three indicators

  49. to see if you fear God, or rather to

  50. discover what or who you truly fear.

  51. Write down number one. What you follow

  52. indicates who you fear.

  53. What you follow indicates who you fear.

  54. You see, most of us fear God up until

  55. the point until his word demands us to

  56. follow him somewhere we are not

  57. comfortable going.

  58. We're we're okay being a follower of

  59. Jesus up until the point where the Bible

  60. says, "Thus saith the Lord, do this.

  61. Don't do this. this is sin, this is

  62. wrong. And at that moment when God

  63. begins to meddle in my personal life, I

  64. begin to get uncomfortable following

  65. him. And what I follow, what I chase is

  66. an indicator of who I fear. Can I make

  67. it real practical for you? Here's what

  68. we say in our minds in our American

  69. society, in this culture. As long as God

  70. leads me to nice paychecks, good

  71. friends, a beautiful home, a moral

  72. family, nice vehicles, three weeks

  73. vacation, I can sprinkle in a little bit

  74. of time to have some religion, but I

  75. cannot be no more than a 10-minute drive

  76. from Starbucks. I've got to have all of

  77. my com I've got to have all of my

  78. comforts close. And as long as God can

  79. fit inside of my American dream, my

  80. American men mindset, as long as God can

  81. fit inside of the comfort of how I want

  82. to live, then I'm okay following God.

  83. But at the moment when God demands I

  84. give up something that is comfortable,

  85. that's where I draw the line. This is

  86. where most people live. Do we fear God?

  87. We fear him in a sense, but but we don't

  88. follow him like we fear him, do we?

  89. We follow him as long as it's easy to

  90. follow him. But what we're going to find

  91. this morning in our text is that a true

  92. a person who truly fears God is willing

  93. to follow him anywhere. The moment that

  94. he directs our steps away from what is

  95. comfortable, we immediately reveal that

  96. we fear our flesh more than our father.

  97. Because we follow our flesh more than we

  98. follow our father.

  99. Most of us reveal that we fear our flesh

  100. more than our father because we follow

  101. the leading of the flesh more than the

  102. leading of the father. Y'all know this

  103. is true. Right? Don't look at me like

  104. that. I'm telling it right this morning.

  105. I know this is not a a fun way to start

  106. a sermon. You want some silly story or

  107. something, but I'm coming right at you

  108. this morning. All right? You follow God

  109. up until the point where it gets

  110. difficult. And when your flesh

  111. complains,

  112. when your flesh says, "I don't like

  113. this. This isn't what I picked. This

  114. isn't what I would have chosen. This

  115. isn't what I had planned." Then we

  116. immediately put the brakes on following

  117. God. And we begin to follow our flesh.

  118. And you know what that reveals to me? We

  119. fear our flesh more than we fear our

  120. father. We would rather have God upset

  121. at us than our own body upset at us.

  122. Think about that.

  123. We would rather have God upset at us

  124. than have our own body upset at us.

  125. So, who do you follow? What you follow

  126. indicates who you fear. Write down

  127. number two.

  128. What you feed indicates what you fear.

  129. What you feed indicates what or who you

  130. fear. If you fear God, then your desire

  131. will be to make God happy. But if you

  132. fear your flesh, then your desire will

  133. be to keep yourself happy.

  134. Most of us

  135. aren't excited to satisfy the Holy

  136. Spirit. But we sure are desperate to

  137. satisfy ourself.

  138. This is why I believe fasting has become

  139. such a strange concept in the local

  140. church

  141. because the our our mindset is feed the

  142. flesh. And I mean literally we would re

  143. we would rather sit down and and eat a 8

  144. oz or 12 ounce or 16 ounce steak.

  145. I love good steak.

  146. We would rather sit down and eat a good

  147. steak than we would see somebody get

  148. saved. You say, "No, no, no, no. That's

  149. not that's not true, Pastor John. I want

  150. to see people get saved." Okay. When's

  151. the last time you skipped a meal for the

  152. sole purpose of praying for your lost

  153. family members and loved ones?

  154. When's the last time you told God,

  155. "Their salvation means more to me than

  156. my own physical consumption of food."

  157. It's an indicator of who we truly fear.

  158. We fear our stomach growling more than

  159. we fear an eternity for our loved ones

  160. in hell. I know this is strong, but I'm

  161. trying to get you to to understand we've

  162. all got room to grow when it comes to

  163. fearing God. Because what I feed

  164. indicates who I fear. And if I fear God,

  165. then what I'm going to recognize is that

  166. he is holy and just. And I've got

  167. friends and family who need Jesus. And

  168. if they stand before a thrice holy God

  169. in their sin, they will have to spend

  170. eternity in hell. And that's just and

  171. right for God to do that.

  172. Because I fear his righteousness,

  173. because I fear his holiness, and because

  174. I love my family, I'm going to make some

  175. personal sacrifices and feed the Holy

  176. Spirit instead of my flesh. Does this

  177. make sense to everybody? What you feed

  178. indicates who you fear. Let me give you

  179. a third thing.

  180. Who you fellowship with indicates who

  181. you fear,

  182. who you fellowship with. Where do you

  183. spend your time?

  184. What's more important to you? Talking to

  185. your neighbor or talking to God? I'm not

  186. preaching against being neighborly. We

  187. have to be neighborly. I want you to

  188. talk to your neighbors. But what has the

  189. first priority? Your relationship with

  190. Bob or your relationship with God?

  191. Right? What's your first priority in

  192. your life? Who do you talk to? What's

  193. more important? Your social media

  194. notification or that still small voice

  195. invitation?

  196. Which one is more important to you? How

  197. many of you have been praying and you're

  198. really trying to pray and you're really

  199. trying to focus and ding

  200. buzz

  201. and you go for it?

  202. You know what you're indicating is what

  203. just happened on my phone is more

  204. important than the person I'm talking

  205. to.

  206. I fear missing a notification more than

  207. I fear God.

  208. You see what I'm saying this morning?

  209. Who you fellowship with indicates who

  210. you fear. So where do you spend your

  211. time?

  212. Where do you devote yourself? What is

  213. the most important relationship in your

  214. life? it ought to be your fellowship

  215. with God. And this morning I want to

  216. preach to you on the topic of fearing

  217. God from our text in Joshua 8.

  218. And so I'm trying to just give you a

  219. practical definition of it to see where

  220. you stand. How are we doing? Do we fear

  221. God?

  222. Oswald Chambers said this, "The

  223. remarkable thing about God is that when

  224. you fear God, you fear nothing else.

  225. Whereas if you do not fear God, you fear

  226. everything else.

  227. If you're afraid of everything else, if

  228. you're if you're constantly uh uh

  229. anxious and worried and upset and you

  230. have to make sure things are listen,

  231. you're fearing people. You're fearing

  232. your flesh. Fear God first of all. The

  233. rest of it will take care of itself.

  234. Here's another quote by Jerry Bridges.

  235. The person who fears God seeks to live

  236. all of life to the glory of God. All the

  237. activities of life should be pursued

  238. with the aim of glorifying God. Is that

  239. how we live our life? That everything we

  240. do, we do it with the purpose of

  241. bringing glory to him. Every meal that I

  242. eat, every conversation that I have,

  243. every day that I wake up and go into the

  244. job site, every person that I meet when

  245. I'm out and about, everything I do, I do

  246. for the purpose of glorifying God. A

  247. person with a healthy fear of God will

  248. do all that they do for the glory of

  249. God. Awtoer said it this way. When men

  250. no longer fear God, they transgress his

  251. laws without hesitation.

  252. And you can tell our society has lost

  253. their fear of God because we are

  254. transgressing his laws without

  255. hesitation.

  256. Even churches today

  257. have lost their fear of God because we

  258. live and do whatever we want, however we

  259. want, with with no desire to do it God's

  260. way.

  261. We break his law without hesitation

  262. because we have lost our fear of God.

  263. Solomon talked about it. Proverbs

    Proverbs 1 chapter mention

  264. chapter 1 and verse 7, the fear of the

  265. Lord is the beginning of knowledge. He's

  266. he talks about it again in Proverbs

    Proverbs 9 chapter mention

  267. chapter 9 and verse 10. The fear of the

  268. Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

  269. Or what about Ecclesiastes in chapter 12

  270. and verse 13? What is what is the

  271. purpose of man? Why do we exist today?

  272. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole

  273. matter. Solomon writes, "Fear God and

  274. keep his commandments for this is the

  275. whole duty of man." You know why you're

  276. put here in the first place is to fear

  277. God and bring glory to him. That's why

  278. we exist this morning. That's why we're

  279. in church this morning is because we

  280. fear God. But sadly, sadly in many

  281. churches and probably in our church,

  282. there are people who are in the pews

  283. just because it's a good thing to do and

  284. I have to check my little box for the

  285. week.

  286. Oh, that we would have a healthy fear of

  287. our God.

  288. That we would long to bring glory to

  289. him. I'm just trying this morning to

  290. help us understand what it means in a

  291. practical sense to fear God

  292. because we're getting ready to jump into

  293. a passage in Joshua chapter 8. And we're

    Joshua 8 chapter mention

  294. going to walk through it very quickly

  295. this morning. I know I'm taking a lot of

  296. runway to get the plane up, but we're

  297. going to get up. All right,

  298. we're going to look at h how they

  299. demonstrated they that they feared God.

  300. The nation of Israel, when we come to

  301. Joshua chapter 8, the nation of Israel

    Joshua 8 chapter mention

  302. has just defeated the city of Jericho.

  303. You remember the story? We were there a

  304. few weeks back. During that defeat,

  305. Achen, who was an Israelite who was

  306. fighting in Jericho, disobeyed God and

  307. stole something from the city of

  308. Jericho. That sin caused Israel to have

  309. a devastating defeat at their next

  310. battle, which was the city of Ai.

  311. 36 Israelites died when they attacked

  312. Ai. They only took a few thousand men.

  313. They were supposed to have an easy

  314. victory. They walked right up to the

  315. front gate of the city of Ai. and the

  316. men of Ai came out against them and the

  317. children of Israel fainted. They they

  318. they became afraid and fearful. They

  319. turned and ran and they fled back to the

  320. Israelite camp. And 36 of them lost

  321. their life because there was sin in the

  322. camp. And we spent a great deal of time

  323. talking about getting the sin out of our

  324. life. That's exactly what the children

  325. of Israel did. They cleansed the camp.

  326. They took care of Achen. They got rid of

  327. the sin. And they go back to Ai in

  328. Joshua chapter 8. And that's where we

    Joshua 8 chapter mention

  329. find the story. It's now time to return

  330. to Ai and face the enemy that has just

  331. defeated them. And God gives Joshua a

  332. command that he wants Joshua to give to

  333. the nation of Israel. A charge. We find

  334. it in verse number one. We looked at it

  335. last week. Verse number one of chapter

  336. 8. And the Lord said unto Joshua, here

  337. it is. Fear not. Neither be thou

  338. dismayed. Take all the people of war

  339. with thee, and arise, go up to Ai. See,

  340. I have given into thy hand the king of

  341. Ai and his people and his city and his

  342. land. God says, "Fear not, Joshua. Don't

  343. be afraid of the people of Ai." And we

  344. talked last week about we are not to

  345. fear our past. We're not to fear the

  346. past sin. Uh that we're not to focus on

  347. Achen. We're not to be caught up in our

  348. past mistakes, but we're supposed to

  349. move forward by the grace of Jesus

  350. Christ, by the mercy of Jesus Christ.

  351. Don't fear your past, but also don't

  352. fear your future because you're going to

  353. battle. Yes, you're going to face AI.

  354. Yes, you're going to have a war. I mean,

  355. it's going to be difficult. It's going

  356. to be challenging. But don't fear your

  357. future because God has given them into

  358. your hand. And this morning, I want to

  359. talk about who we are supposed to fear.

  360. We are to fear God. I want to show you

  361. three ways this morning that Israel

  362. demonstrated that they feared God from

  363. our text. Number one, you can write this

  364. down. They did it God's way.

  365. They did it God's way.

  366. In verse number two, we pick the story

  367. up and I'll read several verses, so

  368. follow along with me. Verse number two,

  369. and thou shalt do to Ai and to her king,

  370. as thou dst unto Jericho and her king.

  371. Only the spoil thereof, and the cattle

  372. thereof shall ye take for a prey unto

  373. yourselves. Lay thee an ambush for the

  374. city behind it. So Joshua arose and all

  375. the people of war to go up against Ai.

  376. And Joshua chose out 30,000 mighty men

  377. of valor, and sent them away by night.

  378. And he commanded them, saying, "Behold,

  379. ye shall lie in weight against the city,

  380. even behind the city. Go not very far

  381. from the city, but be ye all ready, and

  382. I and all the people that are with me

  383. will approach under the city. And it

  384. shall come to pass that when they come

  385. out against us as at the first that we

  386. will flee before them, for they will

  387. come out after us till we have drawn

  388. them from the city. For they will say,

  389. they flee before us as at the first.

  390. Therefore, we will flee before them.

  391. Then ye shall rise up from the ambush

  392. and seize upon the city, for the Lord

  393. your God will deliver it into your hand.

  394. And it shall be when ye have taken the

  395. city, that ye shall set the city on

  396. fire, according to the commandment of

  397. the Lord shall ye do. See, I have

  398. commanded you. Joshua therefore sent

  399. them forth, and they went to lie in

  400. ambush and abode between Bethl and Ai on

  401. the west side of Ai. But Joshua lodged

  402. that night among the people. And Joshua

  403. rose up early in the morning and

  404. numbered the people and went up. He and

  405. the elders of Israel before the people

  406. of Ai. Here they go. They're going to

  407. war. Verse 11. And all the people, even

  408. the people of war that were with him

  409. went up and drew nigh and came before

  410. the city and pitched on the north side

  411. of Ai. Now, there was a valley between

  412. them and Ai. And he took about 5,000 men

  413. and set them in to lie in ambush between

  414. Bethl and Ai on the west side of the

  415. city. And when they had and when they

  416. had set the people, even all the host

  417. that was on the north of the city and

  418. their liars in weight on the west of the

  419. city, Joshua went that night into the

  420. midst of the valley.

  421. The the Bible doesn't say this, but I I

  422. like to assume that Joshua is just going

  423. down there to look around and pray a

  424. little bit. Just go down there and seek

  425. the face of the Lord before he goes into

  426. this. By the way, whenever you're

  427. getting ready to face a spiritual battle

  428. in your life, a spiritual decision in

  429. your life, it's a good idea to take some

  430. time and just pray over it. Just take a

  431. walk and pray over it before you make

  432. any decision. Verse 14, it came to pass

  433. when the king of Ai saw it that they

  434. hasted and rose up early, and the men of

  435. the city went out against Israel to

  436. battle. He and all his people at a time

  437. appointed before the plain, but he

  438. wished not that there were liars in

  439. ambush against him behind the city. And

  440. Joshua and all Israel made as if they

  441. were beaten before them and fled away

  442. into the wilderness. And all the people

  443. that were in Ai were called together to

  444. pursue after them. And they pursued

  445. after Joshua. And they were drawn away

  446. from the city. And there was not a man

  447. left in Ai or Bethl that went not out

  448. against Israel. And they left the city

  449. open and pursued after Israel. And the

  450. Lord said unto Joshua, "Stretch out the

  451. spear that is in thy hand toward Ai, for

  452. I will give it into thine hand." And

  453. Joshua stretched out the spear that he

  454. had in his hand toward the city. And the

  455. ambusher rose quickly out of their

  456. place, and they ran as soon as he had

  457. stretched out his hand. And they entered

  458. into the city, and took it, and hasted,

  459. and set the city on fire. And when the

  460. men of Ai looked behind them, they saw,

  461. and behold, the smoke of the city

  462. ascended up to heaven. And they had no

  463. power to flee this way or that way. And

  464. the people that fled into the wilderness

  465. turned back upon the pursuers. And when

  466. Joshua and all Israel saw that the

  467. ambush had taken the city, and that the

  468. smoke of the city ascended, then they

  469. turned again and slew the men of Ai, and

  470. the other issued out of the city against

  471. them. So they were in the midst of

  472. Israel, some on this side, and some on

  473. that side. And they smoked them so that

  474. they let none of them remain or escape.

  475. A great victory. What a great battle

  476. strategy. What a great plan. Am I right?

  477. It was a great plan. It was a great

  478. battle strategy. God designed it. God

  479. put it together. God knew exactly what

  480. he was doing when he was putting all of

  481. this together, right? God had a plan and

  482. God said, "I want you, Joshua, to do it

  483. this way. I want you to go into Ai. I

  484. want you to set an ambush behind the

  485. city. I want you to go right up to the

  486. front gate just like you did the first

  487. time. And when they all come out against

  488. you, I want you to turn and run from

  489. them just like you did the first time.

  490. And they're going to think that you're

  491. defeated. They're going to think that

  492. you are running for your life again.

  493. They're going to think that they have

  494. won again. And they're going to chase

  495. you. and then the ambush that's lying

  496. behind the city will come up into the

  497. city and you'll be able to get a great

  498. victory. Now, this is a good this is a

  499. okay, from a human perspective, this is

  500. a better battle strategy than Jericho,

  501. right? But it's still a little bit

  502. intimidating.

  503. What happens what what happens if they

  504. kill more of us? Because last time when

  505. we went up to the gate and we turned and

  506. ran away, 36 of us died. So, what

  507. happens this time, God? What? Why are we

  508. running right up to the gate? Maybe

  509. there's a better way. Maybe maybe we can

  510. lure them out some other way. No, that's

  511. not what Joshua does. Joshua doesn't

  512. argue. Joshua doesn't set his plan out

  513. there. Joshua just says, "God has said,

  514. we're going to walk right up to the

  515. front gate. They're going to chase us

  516. away just like they did the first time.

  517. We're going to turn and run and then the

  518. ambush is going to rise up and come into

  519. the city and take it and we're going to

  520. turn around and we're going to have them

  521. surrounded and we're going to beat

  522. them." Joshua said, "This is what God

  523. has said, so this is what we're going to

  524. do. This is the plan God has given. So,

  525. this is what we're going to do. This is

  526. an indication that they feared God more

  527. than they feared Ai. They feared God

  528. more than they feared their enemy. It

  529. would have been very easy for Joshua to

  530. make up his own plan and say, "I really

  531. don't think it's a good idea to walk

  532. right up to the front gate again like we

  533. did last time. I think we can come up

  534. with a better plan. I think we can come

  535. up with something else to do." No,

  536. that's not what Joshua did. He said,

  537. "God has said we're going to do it this

  538. way, so we're going to do it this way."

  539. They did it God's way. What a great

  540. application for you and I this morning.

  541. How many times has God told us, "This is

  542. what I expect of my people." And you and

  543. I decide it's a good time to argue and

  544. give our opinion.

  545. You know, people do this all the time.

  546. By the way, can I just throw in a little

  547. extra plug here? I don't ramble much in

  548. my sermon, so you'll forgive me every

  549. now and then.

  550. Be careful who you watch.

  551. We we live in a digital age.

  552. Be very careful who you watch on your

  553. phone or on your YouTube channel because

  554. there are a lot of people out there who

  555. are taking the Bible and they're taking

  556. it out of context and they're arguing

  557. with what God has said. And if you watch

  558. them argue long enough, you'll hear an

  559. argument that makes sense to you and I.

  560. Because you know the thing about God's

  561. ways, it doesn't always make sense to

  562. the human mind. That's why faith is

  563. required. But you listen to human people

  564. argue against the way of God long enough

  565. and you're going to think, "Oh, that

  566. makes some sense, actually." Well, yeah,

  567. it makes sense. God's way doesn't always

  568. make sense. His ways are higher than our

  569. ways. He's better than us. He He knows

  570. far more than you and I know. So, I'm

  571. just telling you, be careful who you pay

  572. attention to. Find somebody who believes

  573. the Bible above anything else. And what

  574. the Bible says is absolutely true.

  575. Nothing else matters. The Bible is our

  576. source of truth. The Bible is the only

  577. source of truth in the world. God said

  578. it, so they're going to do it. Go do the

  579. same thing as last time. God said God

  580. had a plan. God always has a plan, by

  581. the way. If you trust him and do it his

  582. way, he will provide. In the following

  583. verses, following verse two, Joshua was

  584. going to communicate and execute the

  585. plan down to the detail. God said, "Do

  586. it this way. We're going to do it this

  587. way." They did it God's way. Did you

  588. know that God has given us exactly what

  589. he expects of you and I? Of course, you

  590. knew it. You just don't always like it,

  591. right?

  592. Oh, yeah. We know that God has told us

  593. what we're supposed to do. We know God

  594. has told us how to live. We just don't

  595. always like what God has said.

  596. And so, we like to pick and choose.

  597. Well, I like this. I like what God says

  598. about this, but I don't really like what

  599. the Bible says about that. So, I'm going

  600. to I'm going to obey this and I'm not

  601. going to obey that. Listen, you want to

  602. know one of the reasons why I preach the

  603. Bible chapter by chapter and we just

  604. take a book and we just go chapter by

  605. chapter and chapter. You know, one of

  606. the reasons why I do that for a lot of

  607. reasons. One of the reasons is because I

  608. don't want to pick and choose what part

  609. I want to preach. I want to preach all

  610. of it cover to cover. It's all good.

  611. It's all right. Whether it makes me

  612. comfortable or uncomfortable, whether it

  613. convicts me or whether it brings me

  614. peace, it's all good and we need all of

  615. it. Don't pick and choose what you want.

  616. God has given us exactly what he expects

  617. from his people. But we would rather do

  618. things our way and face God than do

  619. things God's way and face ourselves.

  620. We would rather do things our own way

  621. and face God than do things God's way

  622. and face ourselves, face our flesh.

  623. That doesn't seem very comfortable to

  624. me. That's not socially acceptable.

  625. That's not culturally acceptable.

  626. Doesn't matter. They did it God's way.

  627. When you fear God more than anything

  628. else, you're going to do things God's

  629. way. Whether you like it, whether you

  630. don't like it, whether it's convicting

  631. or not. Can I give you some practical

  632. examples? God's told you how to live

  633. your life. There are some very clear

  634. things in scripture, some things that

  635. you are not supposed to do, some words

  636. you are not supposed to say. The Bible

  637. says, "Let no filthy communication come

  638. out of your mouth. Don't be unclean. God

  639. has told you this is what I expect. I'm

  640. not calling us to be perfect this

  641. morning,

  642. but but God, we all we can't deny that

  643. God hasn't told us what he expects of

  644. us, right? And if we fear God, we'll do

  645. our very best to live up to his

  646. expectation. Sure, we'll fall short.

  647. Absolutely. We live in a a flesh, a

  648. sinful body, and we'll fall short until

  649. we get our glorified body. But is your

  650. desire above anything else to live up to

  651. the expectations that God has set for

  652. your life? What you do, what you don't

  653. do, what you say, what you don't say,

  654. where you go, where you don't go, the

  655. priorities that you have. God has given

  656. us clear instruction. You say, "I've

  657. never seen that." Well, you've never

  658. read your Bible. We'll talk about that

  659. more here in a minute. I'm getting

  660. there. God's told you what he expects

  661. for your marriage.

  662. Do it God's way.

  663. God's told you what he expects on

  664. raising children. Do it God's way. He's

  665. told us how to stay away from immorality

  666. and uncleanliness. Just do it God's way.

  667. He's told us how to operate in the

  668. church and the how the church is

  669. supposed to function. Do it God's way.

  670. We don't have to come up with our own

  671. battle strategy.

  672. We just fear God and we do it his way.

  673. We do what God has commanded us to do.

  674. What has God told us in his word? Have

  675. you read it? Do you know? Get in there

  676. and figure it out and say, "God, how am

  677. I supposed to deal with this situation?

  678. There's instruction in there for you."

  679. I heard a story, and I did not rehearse

  680. it, so I'll probably mess it up, but but

  681. I heard a story this week

  682. about um a big oil company, and it was

  683. John Rockefeller's oil company years

  684. ago. They were trying to expand and take

  685. the company global. And so one of

  686. Rockefeller's aids, one of his primary

  687. assistants was in charge of finding the

  688. next location they were going to expand

  689. their oil company to.

  690. And he was a Christian man. And so he

  691. had a lot of pressure on him from this.

  692. He was trying to figure out what what

  693. direction they were supposed to go, what

  694. country they were supposed to go to,

  695. what was the next step in this in this

  696. major move. And he was feeling a lot of

  697. pressure about it. And so one night he

  698. got his Bible out and he was just

  699. reading his Bible and studying the word

  700. of God. And he went to the book of

  701. Exodus and he began to read in the book

  702. of Exodus about uh Moses's mother making

  703. a ark out of bull rushes and she put

  704. pitch on the bull rushes. And he thought

  705. if they had pitch in Egypt back then, I

  706. bet there's still oil in Egypt today.

  707. And so he went over to Egypt and they

  708. started digging. And sure enough, they

  709. found oil in Egypt. And they had the

  710. first oil rigs in Egypt was from John

  711. Rockefeller. And they made millions and

  712. millions of dollars pumping oil out of

  713. Egypt because somebody read the Bible.

  714. Don't tell me that the Bible doesn't

  715. have answers. Right? The most practical,

  716. simple thing. Sometimes all it takes is

  717. just opening up the word of God and

  718. saying, "Lord, I need something.

  719. I need to know what I'm supposed to do

  720. because more than anything, I want to do

  721. it your way. More than anything, I want

  722. to do what you have instructed me to do.

  723. I want to live by your rules. I want to

  724. live by your expectations. I desire you.

  725. We wonder why we don't see spiritual

  726. victory. Could it be that we are trying

  727. to fight the enemy our own way instead

  728. of God's way? Most often, I think that's

  729. a big problem.

  730. We want to fight the enemy in our own

  731. strength, our own way, and we wonder why

  732. spiritual victory eludes us.

  733. when if we would just say, "God, I'm

  734. going to do it your way. Just obey him."

  735. Can I give you point number two? How do

  736. we know that they feared God? Well,

  737. number one, they did it God's way, but

  738. number two, they were devoted to God's

  739. worship.

  740. They were devoted to God's worship. Look

  741. at verse number 30.

  742. After the the

  743. defeat has they've defeated Ai, the

  744. battle is over. They've gone into the

  745. city. They've they've taken all all of

  746. the stuff. God allowed them to go in and

  747. keep the stuff from the city of Ai. And

  748. so they go in and they they take all of

  749. the stuff and and then what do they do

  750. after the battle is over? Look at what

  751. they do in verse 30. Then Joshua built

  752. an altar unto the Lord God of Israel in

  753. Mount Ebal. What's the first thing that

  754. they do after they win this victory?

  755. They're on a mountaintop. They're at

  756. they're at a high point in their in

  757. their military strategy and their

  758. success. They're moving right along.

  759. They've conquered now the city of Ai, a

  760. city that had defeated them. What do

  761. they do? Do they throw a party? Do they

  762. have a great big a fling? Do they have

  763. some some big commotion? No. What do

  764. they do? They go on top of Mount Eall

  765. and they construct an altar.

  766. A symbol that was mo most important to

  767. them was the worship of their God.

  768. Can I meddle just for a moment this

  769. morning?

  770. You look around at our culture and I

  771. want you to Honestly, in your heart this

  772. morning, you look around at our culture.

  773. Can you honestly say

  774. that our culture

  775. is devoted to worship

  776. this morning? The bars are full,

  777. the lakes are full,

  778. the ponds are full, the rivers are full,

  779. the beaches are full,

  780. and the churches are empty.

  781. Why is it that our culture is so good at

  782. prioritizing everything except the

  783. worship of God?

  784. We find a way to make it everywhere else

  785. except the church house.

  786. We make it work everywhere else except

  787. when it's time to come to church. Now

  788. listen, I know there are reasons at

  789. times when when you just cannot be here

  790. for physical reasons or in a family

  791. emergency. I'm not preaching against

  792. those. Please don't misunderstand.

  793. But how often does that really happen?

  794. Not very often, right?

  795. But we allow everything else, every tiny

  796. little thing to come up in our life and

  797. we're going to say, "Well, I just can't

  798. make it this morning."

  799. Whereas, if it was ball game time, you'd

  800. still go.

  801. If it was vacation time, you'd still go.

  802. And we make up all of these reasons why

  803. we cannot go to church. we cannot

  804. worship God. Why is that? Honestly, I'm

  805. I'm curious. I want to know

  806. why is it that that we can make make

  807. stuff happen. Every other area of our

  808. life, it happens no matter what.

  809. But not church.

  810. I grew up in a home where if we planned

  811. something, we did it. And that's how we

  812. do our home. We make plans and unless

  813. there's an emergency, we stick to the

  814. plan. You know, the first thing on our

  815. calendar when I was growing up and in

  816. our home today, the first thing that

  817. goes on our calendar, Sunday morning

  818. church, Wednesday night church, and

  819. church activities,

  820. that's the most important thing in our

  821. life

  822. is making sure we're in the house of

  823. God. Why? Because worship is important.

  824. We went I'll tell you this story. I

  825. don't know why I'm feeling talkative

  826. this morning. I hope that's okay with

  827. y'all.

  828. We were when I was a kid, we was going

  829. to go to the was going to go to the zoo.

  830. I was just a little kid. We was going to

  831. go to the DC zoo and it was I was

  832. homeschooled, so it was going to be a

  833. big field trip day. And like I said, we

  834. made a plan. We stuck to the plan unless

  835. there was an emergency. Well, that night

  836. we had really uh strong thunderstorms

  837. and uh it blew a tree over. It knocked a

  838. tree, lightning struck a tree and

  839. knocked it over on top of our minivan.

  840. And uh so we all woke up the next

  841. morning. We're all getting ready. We

  842. didn't even I don't even know that we

  843. looked outside. We're just getting ready

  844. going. We're going to go to the zoo

  845. today. And we walked outside to go to

  846. the zoo and our minivan is just crushed

  847. underneath this giant this giant tree.

  848. There are times when emergencies take

  849. place.

  850. Here's what I know about my family,

  851. though. If we had not been going to the

  852. zoo, which we did not go to the zoo, but

  853. if we had not been going to the zoo, if

  854. it had been Sunday morning and we had

  855. been going to church instead, we would

  856. have been in church that morning. We

  857. would have called somebody. Hey, can My

  858. dad would have called somebody. Can you

  859. can we get a ride? Tree fell on our van

  860. this morning. We would have been I have

  861. no doubt in my mind. You call my dad and

  862. ask him, he'll remember the day. If if

  863. it had been Sunday morning, we would

  864. have been in church that morning.

  865. Where is that in this culture now?

  866. If a tree falls on one of your vehicles,

  867. you'll miss church for a month.

  868. And when I call you and say, "Hey

  869. brother, hey sister, I just we missed

  870. you at church lately. What's going Well,

  871. you know that tree fell on my car a few

  872. weeks back.

  873. Am I right about it this morning?

  874. What has happened to our devotion to

  875. worship

  876. where the first thing that we've got to

  877. do is get with God?

  878. Here's what's pro. Here's the problem.

  879. We don't fear him anymore, do we?

  880. God won't mind if I miss.

  881. God won't care. What's God gonna do?

  882. I've missed many times and nothing's

  883. ever happened.

  884. And we've lost our fear of a thrice holy

  885. God. You know what God has said in his

  886. word in the New Testament. God said,

  887. "Forsake not the assembling of

  888. yourselves together." God said, "Go to

  889. church." That's what that means. Go to

  890. church. And by the way, interesting that

  891. word is assemble, not gather. You ever

  892. thought about that? I'm gonna preach

  893. this message someday.

  894. The word is a symbol, not gather. Oh, we

  895. come to church and we just gather

  896. together and we think that's good

  897. enough. No, it's an assembly. You ever

  898. put something together? Kid gets a gets

  899. a toy and you got to put that thing

  900. together. You assemble that thing. Why?

  901. You put all the pieces in the right spot

  902. so that the whole thing works together.

  903. That's the church. We assemble. We come

  904. together. We get all the pieces. We put

  905. it together and then we serve the Lord

  906. as a local church.

  907. This is foreign to our culture.

  908. People don't even they don't even know

  909. this stuff. church people.

  910. Church is just optional. It's a thing

  911. that if I have time for it, if I I'll

  912. sprinkle in a little religion, I'll go

  913. once a month, maybe twice a month if I'm

  914. feeling really spiritual, and that'll be

  915. enough for me. And we wonder why we

  916. don't grow spiritually.

  917. Y'all forgive me this morning. I don't

  918. know what's got into me. I have people I

  919. have people call me and ask me questions

  920. who wasn't at church for two weeks and

  921. they'll call me and ask me a question

  922. and be like, "Why did you do this or or

  923. why did you say that or why do we do

  924. this in the church?" And I'm like, "If

  925. you had been in church last Wednesday

  926. night, I actually preached a message

  927. explaining from the Bible why we do this

  928. and this, but you weren't there, so you

  929. don't know. So, you're just left to

  930. assume."

  931. Am I meddling a little too much this

  932. morning?

  933. We've got to get back to a place where

  934. we're devoted to worship.

  935. A person who fears God is devoted to

  936. worship.

  937. Build the altar.

  938. Let's get back on our knees before God

  939. and say, "Lord,

  940. we need you

  941. more than anything else." Sunday

  942. morning, you know, the thing I need most

  943. Sunday morning is this group of people

  944. right here.

  945. I can't miss it.

  946. We went to Florida. We was on vacation.

  947. We went to church. By the way, we go to

  948. church on vacation, too. That's unc

  949. that's not popular either. We were on

  950. vacation. We missed the Sunday here. We

  951. was uh we went to campus church on that

  952. Sunday. And can I tell you, it was a

  953. great service, but I missed being right

  954. here.

  955. Something about having your family,

  956. your church. You are assembling together

  957. to worship the King of Kings.

  958. Oh, may we get back to a place where we

  959. are truly devoted

  960. to worship. We could talk a lot more

  961. about that, but I'm out of time. Let me

  962. give you number three.

  963. Number one, they did it God's way.

  964. Number two, they were devoted to

  965. worship. Number three, how do we know

  966. that they feared God? They delighted in

  967. God's word. Number three, they delighted

  968. in God's word. I want to read some

  969. verses to you and close out the chapter

  970. beginning in verse number 30.

  971. Then Joshua built an altar under the

  972. Lord God of Israel in Mount Ebal. As

  973. Moses, servant of the Lord, commanded

  974. the children of Israel, as it is written

  975. in the book of the law of Moses, an

  976. altar o of whole stones over which no

  977. man hath lift up any iron. And they

  978. offered thereon burnt offerings unto the

  979. Lord and sacrificed peace offerings. And

  980. he wrote there upon the stones a watch

  981. this now. He wrote there upon the stones

  982. a copy of the law of Moses, which he

  983. wrote in the presence of the children of

  984. Israel. and all Israel and their elders

  985. and officers and their judges stood on

  986. this side of the ark and on that side

  987. before the priest and the Levites which

  988. bear the ark of the covenant as the L of

  989. the Lord as well as the stranger as he

  990. that was not born among or as he that

  991. was born among them. Half of them

  992. against Mount Garazm and half of them

  993. against Mount Ebal as Moses the servant

  994. of the Lord had commanded that they

  995. should bless the people of Israel. And

  996. afterward he, notice it, read all the

  997. words of the law, the blessings and the

  998. cursings, according to all that is

  999. written in the book of the law. There

1000. was not a word of all that Moses

1001. commanded, which Joshua read not before

1002. all the congregation of Israel, but the

1003. women and the little ones and the

1004. strangers that were conversant among

1005. them. What is going on? Well, they build

1006. this altar. They're going to worship

1007. God. How do they worship? They get out

  1008. the word.

1009. They write the law. What what what was

1010. their Bible at the time? They had the

1011. law of Moses. That was the Bible that

1012. had been written. Whatever Moses had

1013. written. So the penetuk probably first

1014. five books of the Bible is what they

1015. had. That was their whole Bible. What

1016. did they do with that? They wrote it and

  1017. they read it.

1018. They they had an emphasis on the word of

1019. God. Did you notice it as we read

1020. through that? There was an emphasis on

1021. the law of Moses. We've gathered

1022. together to worship. What are we going

1023. to do when we worship? We're going to

1024. read the word of God. There is something

1025. powerful about the word of God. In fact,

1026. I would say it is the most powerful

1027. thing about the church is the Bible.

1028. You can't have the presence of God

1029. without the word of God. You've got to

1030. get in the Bible. It is the the

1031. foundation of truth. There is no truth

1032. outside of the Bible. The Bible is the

1033. source of all truth. So, we've got to

1034. get into the Bible. Not just in church,

1035. though. What about in your personal

1036. time? When we say we fear God, the

1037. question I would ask is, "Do you love

  1038. your Bible?"

1039. You cannot say, You cannot argue with

1040. me. You have no argument whatsoever. If

1041. you say you fear God, but you have not

1042. picked up your Bible since last Sunday.

1043. You just don't fear him.

1044. Because when you fear God, you fall in

1045. love with the word of God.

1046. You know what this is? This is God's

1047. revelation to you and me about himself.

1048. Everything I need to know about God,

1049. about the church, about life, about

1050. relationships, about everything is found

1051. in this word. God has told me everything

1052. I need to know. It's right here, the

  1053. Bible.

1054. Somebody who I want to fear. Somebody

1055. somebody who I fear, I want to know

1056. about him. Right? My fear of God is

  1057. developed through understanding. The

1058. knowledge of God comes through the

1059. Bible. And the more I know him, the more

  1060. I fear him.

1061. If you've not read the Bible, you don't

1062. know God. And therefore, you cannot fear

  1063. God.

1064. So get in the Bible. Fall in love with

1065. the word of God. Can I give you some

1066. verses this morning and we'll be

1067. finished. Hebrews chapter 4 and verse

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

1068. 12. For the word of God is quick and

1069. powerful, sharper than any two-edged

1070. sword, piercing even to the dividing of

1071. sunder of soul and spirit of and of the

1072. joints and marorrow, and is a discerner

1073. of the thoughts and intents of the

1074. heart. How about Matthew 4 and verse4?

1075. But he answered and said, "It is

1076. written, man shall not live by bread

1077. alone, but by every word that proceedth

1078. out of the mouth of God." Hey, deny the

1079. flesh every once in a while and just get

1080. into the word of God.

1081. Fear God. Psalm 119 and 105. Thy word is

1082. a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my

  1083. path. 2 Timothy 3:16-1 17. All scripture

1084. is given by inspiration of God, and is

1085. profitable for doctrine, for reprove,

1086. for correction, for instruction in

1087. righteousness, that the man of God might

1088. be perfect, truly furnished unto all

1089. good works. How about John 17 and verse

1090. 17? Sanctify them through thy truth. Thy

1091. word is truth. Matthew 24 and verse 35.

1092. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my

1093. word shall not pass away. Psalm 19 verse

    Psalms 19:7–10

1094. 7-10 is one of my favorite passages of

1095. in the Bible about the Bible. The law of

1096. the Lord is perfect, converting the

1097. soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure,

1098. making wise the simple. The statutes of

1099. the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.

1100. The commandment of the Lord is pure,

1101. enlightening the eyes. The fear of the

1102. Lord is clean, enduring forever. The

1103. judgments of the Lord are true and

1104. righteous altogether. More to be desired

1105. are they than gold. What is the they?

1106. All those descriptors are describing the

1107. word of God. It's more to be desired

1108. than gold. Yay. Than much fine gold.

1109. It's sweeter also than honey and the

1110. honeycomb. The greatest thing in this

1111. world is the word of God. Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:9–11

  1112. verse 9 through11. Wherewith all shall a

1113. young man cleanse his way by taking heed

1114. thereto according to thy word. With my

1115. whole heart have I sought thee. Oh, let

1116. me not wander from thy commandments. Thy

1117. word have I hid in my heart that I might

1118. not sin against thee. Someone once said

1119. that either your Bible will keep you

1120. from sin or sin will keep you from your

1121. Bible. Which one's true in your life?

1122. It's the greatest book that's ever been

  1123. written.

  1124. It's a miracle. You're holding a living

1125. miracle in your lap this morning.

1126. It was written over 1500 years on three

1127. different continents in three different

1128. languages by a number of different

1129. authors who did not know each other at

1130. all. And yet it agrees on some of the

1131. most controversial topics known to

1132. mankind. It is in perfect harmony. It's

1133. a miracle that you're holding in your

1134. lap. They have tried to destroy it. They

1135. have tried to ruin it. They've tried to

1136. kill it. They've tried to eliminate it.

1137. And they can't. And that's why they hate

1138. it so much because they cannot get rid

1139. of the Bible. Today it is still the

1140. bestselling book in all of the world.

1141. King James version of the Bible. It's

1142. the bestselling book in all of the world

1143. of all the books that have ever been

1144. written. More copies of the Bible

1145. have been sold than any other book. It

1146. was the first book ever printed on the

1147. on the printing press. The word of God.

  1148. It's special.

  1149. Do you love it?

1150. If it is, if you don't love your Bible,

1151. then you're going to have a real hard

1152. time convincing anyone that you fear the

  1153. God of the Bible.

1154. Well, you and I are supposed to fear

1155. God. What does that mean? Well, do it

  1156. God's way.

  1157. Do it God's way.

1158. Be devoted to God's worship.

1159. Fall in love with God's word. Delight in

  1160. God's word.

1161. You can come. I'm finished.

1162. Friends, we live in a culture today

1163. that, if I can say it bluntly, does not

1164. fear God at all. And I'm afraid that

1165. some of the culture has crept into the

  1166. church.

1167. And religion has taken the place of

  1168. genuine worship.

1169. We read our Bible. If we read anything

1170. at all, we read a verse

1171. so that we can check the box.

1172. We go to church and if if we go at all,

1173. we just go when we absolutely have to so

1174. that we can say we were at church so

1175. that if the pastor calls us, we can say,

1176. "Hey, I saw you on Sunday."

1177. Here's what I have learned. People fear

  1178. their flesh

1179. a whole lot more than they fear God.

  1180. Here's how I know that's true.

  1181. I know me.

1182. And it's a whole lot easier for me to

1183. please my flesh than it is to please my

  1184. God.

1185. And if you're honest this morning, the

1186. same is true of you.

1187. It's a whole lot easier to please your

1188. flesh than it is to please your God.

1189. Can I tell you, if you fall in love with

  1190. him,

  1191. perfect love,

1192. and you fall in love with Jesus,

1193. you will develop a healthy fear of God,

1194. and you'll begin to do things because

1195. you love him. Hey, can I give you an

1196. illustration and we're done this

1197. morning? When I was a kid growing up, I

1198. got whooped. Y'all know what that is?

  1199. There's a difference in getting spanked

1200. and whooped, right? Some of y'all just

1201. got spanked and we can tell I got

  1202. whooped.

1203. When I was just a little guy,

1204. I would mess up, disobey, go to the

  1205. bedroom.

  1206. I'd get the belt.

1207. And there was a time once I figured out

1208. the belt and I knew it was coming for

1209. certain offenses, I stopped doing those

1210. offenses. Not necessarily because I

1211. thought they were right or wrong. I I I

1212. could care less if they were right or

1213. wrong. Not really even because I loved

  1214. my dad.

1215. I just didn't want to get the belt.

1216. So, I'd do what dad said to do and I

1217. would not do what dad said not to do

  1218. because I was afraid

  1219. of getting whooped.

  1220. But as I grew

  1221. and as I matured,

1222. I began to realize something.

1223. Dad was right about that.

1224. My dad actually knew what he was talking

  1225. about. And

1226. and I'm glad that he protected me from

1227. those things. At the time, I didn't know

  1228. any different. I I didn't know what was

1229. right or what was wrong. I just knew I

1230. didn't want to get the belt.

1231. As I became older and I began to look

1232. back and now I have kids of my own and I

1233. begin to tell them the same things. My

  1234. kids get whooped, too.

1235. That probably shouldn't be posted out

  1236. there. I'll get fired.

1237. I begin to do the same things and I

1238. begin to protect my kids

1239. and I begin to show them, hey, this is

1240. right and this is wrong and and I begin

  1241. to realize my dad,

1242. he knew what he was talking about. And

1243. can I tell you when I became an older

1244. teenager and I began to realize that my

1245. dad loved me and that's why he was doing

1246. those things, I began to do what my dad

1247. desired. Not because I was afraid of the

1248. belt. I didn't get spanked anymore, but

1249. I did it just because I loved dad now.

1250. Right? And a lot of us as baby

1251. Christians, we look at the Bible like a

1252. list of rules, like a list of dos and

  1253. don'ts. And God's got these great

1254. expectations for us. And we're like a

  1255. child who's getting spanked. We don't

1256. understand. God, why is that so wrong?

1257. And why would you say that? And why do

1258. you think why the church? Why all this

1259. stuff? But as you grow in your faith and

1260. you begin to open your Bible and you

1261. begin to read and study the word of God,

1262. all of a sudden, you begin to mature

1263. spiritually. And as you get older in

1264. your Christian life, you begin to

1265. realize God knows what he's talking

1266. about all along. And there's a reason

1267. why he said, "Don't go there." And

  1268. there's a reason why he said, "Don't do

1269. that." And he's told you all of these

1270. things and he's given you this book not

1271. because he's trying to be a dictator

1272. over you, but because he loves you. And

1273. the [music] moment that you can

1274. transition from serving God because

1275. you're afraid of the discipline to

1276. serving God just because you love him

1277. will be the greatest day in your

  1278. Christian life.

1279. You'll just begin to serve him because

1280. you realize he's got your best interest

1281. in mind. This Bible is not a rule book.

  1282. It's a love letter from God.

  1283. He loves you.

  1284. so much

1285. that he wrote 66 books over 1500 years

1286. of time and it was perfect

1287. and he said this is everything you need

  1288. to know child

1289. now take it and grow and until you

1290. understand you just trust me

1291. but as you grow and develop you're going

1292. to realize I've had your best interest

  1293. in mind all along

1294. I wonder this morning if there's some

  1295. people here today.

1296. Or maybe you're watching online

  1297. and you say, "I I've

1298. I've not feared God like I ought to.

1299. It's kind of just been going through

1300. motions. I just thought it was what I

  1301. was supposed to do.

1302. This morning, I want I want to give God

  1303. my love.

1304. I want I want to know him."

1305. How many of you have a Bible phone? If

1306. it's on a phone, let me see it. If it's

1307. on, if you got a Bible, hold it up. Let

1308. me see it. See it.

1309. You're holding right now the greatest

1310. love letter that has ever been written

  1311. to mankind.

  1312. I promise you, if you'll get in, it'll

1313. change your life. You'll find out about

1314. your God. You'll figure out that he

1315. loves you so much that he sent his only

1316. begotten son into this world to die, to

1317. take your place on the cross so that

1318. your sins could be paid for. You'll find

1319. that his mercies are new every morning.

1320. You'll find that he's faithful and true.

1321. And as you begin to grow in your

1322. knowledge of God, you'll begin to

1323. develop a fear of God.

1324. That'll eventually lead you to a immense

  1325. passionate love for God.

1326. When you fall in love with Jesus, you

  1327. don't just walk away.

1328. You hang on for dear life.

1329. I know I rambled some this morning. Will

1330. you forgive me for that? Would you stand

  1331. to your feet?

1332. If the Lord's spoken to you at all,

1333. would you take a moment and pray? Say,

1334. "Lord, I need to rededicate myself to

1335. you today. Yeah, I want to get back in

  1336. the
