  1. Aren't you thankful that we serve a God

  2. who never fails? Amen?

  3. I failed and you don't have to tell me,

  4. I know you have too.

  5. But

  6. I'm thankful that God has never failed,

  7. not one time.

  8. Not just my life, that's your life,

  9. that's everybody's life. Every person in

  10. the world, he's never failed not one

  11. person, not one time.

  12. And that's a hope that you ought to be

  13. able to hang on to this morning.

  14. You ought to be able to cling to that

  15. this morning. Amen?

  16. Thank you for that song, beautiful song.

  17. Hey, I want to tell you that this this

  18. brother right here has already been a

  19. blessing to me this morning.

  20. And I just want you to know, I want you

  21. to be praying for this brother. We're

  22. going to give him a little love offering

  23. here in a little bit and I want you to

  24. be praying about those two churches that

  25. they're starting, that they're getting

  26. ready to start. And

  27. think about him, pray about him. He

  28. taught in small groups this morning.

  29. And

  30. did a good job from what I heard and

  31. praise the Lord for that and we're we're

  32. so grateful that you and your wife are

  33. here this morning. And so thank you for

  34. being with us.

  35. And uh stopping by.

  36. Before I preach today and I know what

  37. time it is, y'all stay with me. I'm

  38. going to preach super super fast, okay?

  39. But before I preach today

  40. I have got a grand announcement to make.

  41. And this is something that I have wanted

  42. to do for probably 3 years and we are

  43. finally going to make it happen this

  44. fall. Here's what we're doing, we're

  45. planning an event for men. We're going

  46. to call it man church, it's going to be

  47. on September the 5th.

  48. There are 50 spots available. I can't do

  49. any more than 50 and several of those

  50. spots have already been filled up just

  51. by planning the event out. Here's what

  52. it's going to look like. We're going to

  53. have we're going to meet here at the

  54. church on September 5th at 4:00. And

  55. we're going to eat steak, okay? We're

  56. I'm to order steak. We're going to have

  57. a steak dinner, baked potato, salad, uh

  58. some desserts.

  59. We're going to have a great time. We're

  60. going to meet at 4:00. We're going to

  61. have uh two church services. We're going

  62. to have a church service uh first. We're

  63. going to worship. I've got Brother Drew

  64. Spence is coming and he's going to be

  65. playing some Southern Gospel bluegrass

  66. music and uh men, we're going to just

  67. sing and we're going to worship the Lord

  68. and then David Medley's going to preach

  69. for us and uh

  70. and then we're going to go eat. We're

  71. going to have steak dinner. Uh we're

  72. going to come back upstairs and we're

  73. going to have church again, more music,

  74. more worship and uh then I am trying my

  75. best to get my dad to come preach the

  76. second service and uh so I'm looking

  77. forward to that. He'll be here and I I'm

  78. hoping that he'll be able to put it on

  79. his calendar.

  80. And uh he'll be preaching the second

  81. service. And then after that, we're

  82. going to do some big giveaways and maybe

  83. a contest. And uh all of this is to uh

  84. to kickstart um

  85. Better Man. Better Man starts the fall

  86. semester of Better Man starts on

  87. September the 12th. That's Saturday, the

  88. following Saturday. So, September the

  89. 5th is Man Church, is what we're calling

  90. it. And here's what my goal is. It's not

  91. going to be It's not going to be

  92. frilly. Uh is that a word? I don't know.

  93. We're men. We're going to come do church

  94. like men. We're going to sing like men.

  95. We're going to eat like men. We're going

  96. to have I've got I think over $500 worth

  97. of giveaways that we're going to give

  98. away to everybody. Uh not everybody, but

  99. we're we'll do a drawing and we'll give

  100. stuff away and it is going to be a

  101. fantastic time for a few hours. We're

  102. just going to be men in church,

  103. worshiping, eating and uh I want this to

  104. be an outreach. So, how many of you know

  105. a man who should be in church but

  106. probably isn't in church. Go ahead, let

  107. me see your hands. Okay. The There's

  108. more of you than that. Come on now, let

  109. me see your hands.

  110. Here's what I want you to do. We're just

  111. now starting this. I'm announcing it on

  112. Father's Day on purpose. I want you to

  113. invite somebody to come and be with us

  114. on on that day, September the 5th. Now,

  115. there is a catch, okay? Because of this

  116. event this event was not budgeted. This

  117. is something that we prayed about, but

  118. we didn't have a way to do it. And so

  119. we've decided to do it this year. It

  120. fits this year. It works well this year,

  121. but it was not budgeted. And so what

  122. we're going to do is we're going to

  123. charge $30 a man. Your spot costs $30.

  124. And that will help pay for Have you How

  125. many of you have bought a steak

  126. recently? Right? Okay, we're buying 50

  127. steaks and actually probably 60 or 65

  128. steaks that we're going to buy. And so

  129. it's going to be expensive, but it will

  130. be worth it. This is going to be Listen,

  131. I don't If you don't know me, let me

  132. just tell you something about me. When I

  133. do something, I want to do it first

  134. class. When we do VBS, we do it with

  135. excellence. When we do a ladies meeting,

  136. we're planning a ladies meeting for May

  137. of next year, we're going to do it first

  138. class. When we do this men's meeting,

  139. it's going to be first class. We're

  140. going to have great music, we're going

  141. to have great food, we're going to have

  142. great preaching and great fellowship and

  143. great gifts. In order to do something

  144. with excellence though,

  145. sacrifice just a little bit. You pay $30

  146. for less You pay $30 to take your family

  147. and get a Big Mac at McDonald's down

  148. here, right? So you can pay $30 for a

  149. steak dinner, a chance at a giveaway,

  150. and 2 hours of church with men. I want

  151. you to be thinking about it. We're going

  152. to put a sign up on the website very

  153. soon. And you'll be able to go on,

  154. register, pay ahead of time, and save

  155. your spot, and then invite me. We've got

  156. 50 spaces this year. If we fill those

  157. up, we may expand next year. I think we

  158. can do 50 spaces extremely quickly. Uh

  159. just being transparent, if you guys will

  160. get behind me and we'll push this thing,

  161. I think we can fill up 50 spots uh

  162. probably within within a couple months.

  163. And so we're looking forward to it.

  164. September the 5th, mark it on your

  165. calendar. 4:00 p.m. is when we'll start.

  166. It's going to be a fantastic time. I am

  167. extremely excited about it. I'm I'm

  168. still thinking about maybe a contest,

  169. maybe a shooting contest of some kind,

  170. or I don't know what all we might do,

  171. but it's going to be a great great time.

  172. And this morning we're doing some

  173. giveaways for our fathers. I'm going to

  174. do that at the end, but one of the

  175. things that I'm giving away is a free

  176. registration to Man Church on September

  177. 5th. So, one of you in here this morning

  178. are going to get to go for free and you

  179. may win that this morning.

  180. So, we're looking forward to it. I am I

  181. want you to pray about it. I'm excited

  182. about it. This may be the most excited

  183. I've been I have been just cannot wait

  184. to tell you about this. I've been just

  185. wanting to tell you every service, but I

  186. thought I'd wait till Father's Day and

  187. we are excited about Man Church

  188. September 5th. It's going to be an an

  189. incredible incredible day. So, with all

  190. that said,

  191. let's take our Bibles out now

  192. and go with me to the book of Joshua in

  193. chapter 24.

  194. And I've got just a little thought for

  195. you this morning.

  196. It's not um

  197. it's not fancy. My sermon this morning

  198. is honestly, it's not it's not even

  199. completely written. It's just some notes

  200. that I've got jotted down and

  201. I think it'll be a

  202. a help to somebody this morning though.

  203. I want to mind the Lord and

  204. Joshua chapter 24 this morning.

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  205. I don't really have a title today, but

  206. if I did, this would this would it would

  207. be a question, I think.

  208. Maybe this is just what I want to ask

  209. you this morning men and and ladies

  210. alike.

  211. Who are you serving?

  212. And maybe more important is to ask who

  213. will you serve?

  214. Who have you been serving, right? Like

  215. what what

  216. what are you living for?

  217. What's most important in your life?

  218. If you look back at the decisions that

  219. you have made over the last couple of

  220. years, what what has guided those

  221. decisions? What has been the primary

  222. factor in those decisions?

  223. And then maybe more important than

  224. looking back is looking forward and

  225. saying, "Okay, going forward, what is

  226. going to be my my my factor that's going

  227. to make my decisions? Who am I going to

  228. serve with the rest of my days? Where am

  229. I going when I'm going forward?

  230. The Lord laid this passage, these just

  231. two verses on my heart.

  232. When we think about this and we're still

  233. in the book of Joshua, we jumped way

  234. ahead and we don't worry, we're going to

  235. go back and cover the spots that we

  236. missed but but I wanted to be here this

  237. morning. I felt the Lord wanted us to be

  238. here this morning.

  239. Joshua chapter 24

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  240. verse number 14 and verse number 15.

  241. I'm going to pray real quick and ask the

  242. Lord for his help and then we'll jump

  243. in. Father, I need your help now for a

  244. few moments today. I'm not worthy to

  245. stand here and preach this morning. I

  246. Lord, I have nothing in me to give to

  247. these people today.

  248. I'm just me.

  249. But Lord, your word is perfect. It has

  250. everything that we need. I pray that

  251. just for a moment your Holy Spirit would

  252. fill this place.

  253. Would you fill me, remove any sin from

  254. my life, Lord? I want to be pure and

  255. clean, a vessel that you can use for

  256. just a few moments today.

  257. Clear my mind.

  258. May I speak with boldness.

  259. May I speak with clarity.

  260. But Lord, most importantly, I pray that

  261. your word would touch the hearts of your

  262. people

  263. in an in a way that maybe we haven't

  264. seen in this place in a long time.

  265. And we'll give you all the glory and all

  266. the praise and we ask these things in

  267. Jesus' name.

  268. Amen.

  269. Look at verse number 14 of Joshua 24.

  270. You know these verses if you've been in

  271. church any amount of time, they're very

  272. familiar but don't let the familiarity

  273. with them cause you to overlook them.

  274. Verse number 14, Joshua says, he's

  275. speaking to the nation. He says, "Now

  276. therefore, fear the Lord

  277. and serve who? What's the next word? And

  278. serve

  279. him

  280. in sincerity and in truth and put away

  281. the gods which your fathers served on

  282. the other side of the flood and in Egypt

  283. and serve ye the What's the next word?

  284. And if it seem evil unto you to serve

  285. the Lord, choose you this day whom you

  286. will serve, whether the gods which your

  287. fathers served that were on the other

  288. side of the flood, or the gods of the

  289. Amorites, in whose land you dwell. And

  290. then this is the phrase I want you to

  291. underline it, circle it, highlight it,

  292. whatever you got to do to put attention

  293. on this in your Bible.

  294. Joshua says, "But as for me

  295. and my house,

  296. we will serve the Lord."

  297. We're going to break that little phrase

  298. down this morning that ends verse number

  299. 15. As for me and my house, we will

  300. serve

  301. the Lord.

  302. I wanted you to notice a map that I've

  303. put together. It's interesting and bear

  304. with me, I'm going to teach for just 2

  305. minutes and then we'll I'll get to the

  306. message.

  307. When we come to the book of Joshua in

  308. chapter number 24, we've been walking

  309. through the book of Joshua, and we've

  310. seen them take on Jericho, and we've

  311. seen the nation of Israel take on Ai,

  312. and

  313. and then last week in Joshua or week

  314. before last in Joshua chapter 8, they

    Joshua 8 chapter mention

  315. were in in a in a valley, and you can

  316. see there on the map, there's Jericho

  317. and the Jordan River there runs between

  318. Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea, the big

  319. Mediterranean Sea is there on the side.

  320. The nation of Israel crossed the Jordan

  321. River and they went to the Jericho and

  322. they marched around and then they went

  323. to Ai and they marched around. And then

  324. you get to Joshua chapter 8 and they are

    Joshua 8 chapter mention

  325. in a valley. They're between two

  326. mountains and you see the mountains

  327. there on the screen. Mount Ebal on one

  328. side, Mount Gerizim on the other side.

  329. At the end of Joshua chapter 8, that's

    Joshua 8 chapter mention

  330. where they're located. And in that

  331. place, they do something very memorable

  332. in that valley.

  333. It's a place called Shechem.

  334. And while they are there in Shechem in

  335. that valley, well,

  336. some of the nation stands on Mount Ebal

  337. and some of the nation stands on Mount

  338. Gerizim and they recommit themselves to

  339. God. It's Joshua 8:30-35.

    Joshua 8:30–35

  340. You can go back and read it sometime.

  341. They're going to stand there on those

  342. mountains and they're going to recite

  343. God's blessings and they're going to

  344. recite God's cursings and they're going

  345. to recommit as a nation to doing what

  346. God wants them to do, the conquering the

  347. the land of Canaan.

  348. We come to Joshua 24 and we're several

  349. chapters removed from that moment. But

  350. what's interesting is the nation of

  351. Israel is in the same geographical

  352. location in chapter 24 as they are in

  353. chapter 8.

  354. And what's also interesting is that what

  355. they are doing in chapter 24 is the same

  356. thing that they did in chapter 8. In

  357. chapter 8 they recommitted themselves to

  358. God, they reaffirmed the covenant that

  359. they had with God, and now we jump ahead

  360. all the way to Joshua chapter 24 and

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  361. they're going to do the same thing

  362. again. They're going to renew their

  363. commitment, they're going to refresh

  364. themselves with the covenant that they

  365. have made for God in for God in this

  366. location here in this place called

  367. Shechem. Why would that be so important?

  368. Why is that so interesting? Well, it's

  369. important because it sets an example for

  370. you and I. Let me ask you something, was

  371. the nation of Israel God's people?

  372. Yes or no, were they God's people or

  373. were they not?

  374. They were God's people. So if they were

  375. already God's people, why did they have

  376. to renew the covenant? Why did they have

  377. to recite the law? Why did they have to

  378. refresh their memory with what God had

  379. told them? Why would they have to

  380. recommit if they were already God's

  381. people? What would be the purpose of

  382. them going to this valley, Shechem,

  383. between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim and

  384. recommitting themselves to the Lord?

  385. It's a principle that God is

  386. establishing I think for all of his

  387. people for all time. Listen, this

  388. morning in this place many of us are

  389. God's people. I hope everyone of us in

  390. this place belongs to God. I hope and

  391. pray that there is a moment in your life

  392. that you can remember where you called

  393. out on the name of Jesus, you recognized

  394. yourself as a sinner, there was nothing

  395. you could do about your sin, there was

  396. no way you could save yourself, you

  397. recognized that Jesus came and paid it

  398. all on your behalf. And and on that

  399. moment, in that moment of realization,

  400. you surrendered yourself to the mighty

  401. hand of God and said, "On this moment

  402. and going forward, I place my faith and

  403. my trust completely in Jesus Christ. I'm

  404. not trusting in myself, in what I can

  405. give in an offering plate, in a baptism,

  406. in a church service, in a man or a woman

  407. or a grandpa or a grandma. I'm not

  408. trusting in anybody or anything other

  409. than Jesus to forgive me of my sin and

  410. get me to heaven. If that moment has

  411. taken place in your life, then this

  412. morning, gathered in this place, we are

  413. God's people. Just as the nation of

  414. Israel on that morning, in that place,

  415. was God's people.

  416. We have some similarities. So, if the

  417. nation of Israel had to gather

  418. themselves and remind themselves of

  419. their commitment to God, and remind

  420. themselves of the covenant they had with

  421. God, don't you think it would be a good

  422. idea for God's people today to often

  423. times gather in a place with one another

  424. and just take a moment and say, "This

  425. day, in this place, I'm going to

  426. reaffirm that I'm a follower of Jesus

  427. Christ." I'm not saying get saved again.

  428. You can only get saved one time. Once

  429. you're saved, you're always saved. You

  430. don't need to be saved again. You're

  431. still God's people.

  432. But, it's good for you

  433. to come to a place and say, "Today,

  434. I'm going to recommit myself.

  435. Maybe yesterday or this past week, I

  436. messed up in a few places. Maybe there

  437. were some mistakes that I made along the

  438. way. Maybe there were some decisions

  439. that if I could go back and do again,

  440. I'd make a different decision. But, that

  441. was last week, and today I'm standing at

  442. the beginning of a new week." They

  443. Aren't you glad we come to church on

  444. Sunday? Amen. We come to church to start

  445. the week on the first day, a fresh

  446. start, a day of rest, a day of worship,

  447. a day to be rejuvenated. And what

  448. happened last week is in the past. You

  449. can't change it. But today, in this

  450. place, you can come before God and say,

  451. "Today, I recommit. I'm going to refresh

  452. myself with whom I God is, and I'm going

  453. to tell him that from this day going

  454. forward, I will serve the Lord." That's

  455. what they're doing in this place. Now, I

  456. want to show you just a few simple

  457. things from the text today. I've got a

  458. very brief and simple outline.

  459. From this little phrase at the end of

  460. verse 15,

  461. where Joshua says, "But as for me and my

  462. house, we will serve

  463. the Lord."

  464. I want you to notice, first of all, the

  465. leader.

  466. Write down number one, the leader.

  467. Who is leading the way on this?

  468. Who's the one standing

  469. in the valley of Shechem

  470. and saying, "Hey, everybody, there's a

  471. decision that's being made, and I'm

  472. going to be the first one to make it."

  473. You know who he is, right? Who's the one

  474. speaking? It's Joshua.

  475. He stands before the people

  476. and he proclaims, "As for me."

  477. I want you to notice, first of all,

  478. about the leader that he made a personal

  479. decision.

  480. Uh Joshua stands up in front of

  481. everybody, and he didn't start by

  482. saying, "You."

  483. He stood up in front of everybody, and

  484. he said,

  485. "It's me first." How many of you

  486. remember the little song we used to sing

  487. from time to time when we were kids in

  488. Sunday school? It's me, it's me, it's

  489. me, oh Lord, standing in the meeting

  490. need of prayer. Not my brother, not my

  491. sister, but it's me, oh Lord. Sometimes

  492. as Christians, sometimes as church

  493. people, sometimes as independent

  494. fundamental Baptist, we get this idea

  495. that we're okay and everybody else is

  496. broken. That we're okay, and it's

  497. everybody else's fault that the world is

  498. the way that it is. We're okay, but it's

  499. everybody else's church that's causing

  500. the problem. And this morning, if we're

  501. going to really get serious with God and

  502. say today I'm going to recommit myself

  503. on this day I'm going to reestablish

  504. myself as a servant of Jesus Christ,

  505. then what you have to understand is it's

  506. not everybody else who needs prayer.

  507. Sure, they may need it, but it's you and

  508. I who stand in the need of prayer. It's

  509. you and I who stand in need of the

  510. presence of God. It's you and I who have

  511. wandered away and strayed in the last

  512. week. It's you and I who must commit

  513. ourselves to the leading of Jesus

  514. Christ. Here's what Joshua does. He

  515. stands in the midst of the camp there in

  516. the valley of Shechem and he said,

  517. "Listen, everybody. I don't know what

  518. you're going to do, but I know what I'm

  519. going to do. I don't know what you might

  520. decide, but I've already decided. And I

  521. don't know what you might participate

  522. in, but I know what I'm going to

  523. participate in. And I don't know where

  524. you might lead your family, but I know

  525. where I'm leading my family. And I think

  526. it would be a really good idea. I feel

  527. like preaching this morning. I feel like

  528. it would be a really good idea if some

  529. of God's people would get serious with

  530. God and say it don't matter what anybody

  531. else is going to do. It don't matter

  532. what the family across the aisle is

  533. going to do. It doesn't matter what

  534. somebody across town is going to do. It

  535. doesn't matter what the church on the

  536. other side of the county is going to do.

  537. As for me, I'm making a personal

  538. decision this morning that I will do

  539. what is right.

  540. I'm not going to worry about anybody

  541. else. I'm going to stand on truth and

  542. I'm going to do what God has told me

  543. to do.

  544. We get so distracted looking at

  545. everybody else's problems that we forget

  546. that it's you and I sometimes who need

  547. to find an old-fashioned altar and say,

  548. "God, it's me.

  549. I am the one who needs revival.

  550. Start it in me. I'm the one who needs to

  551. hear from you. I'm the one who needs to

  552. sense your presence. I'm the one who

  553. needs to take a stand.

  554. It's me."

  555. Joshua said, "As for me,"

  556. he said, "it starts with your leader."

  557. It starts with the man before you.

  558. As for

  559. me, I wonder if there's anybody in here

  560. this morning. I wonder if there's a

  561. father in here on Father's Day 2026

  562. who would recognize in this very moment,

  563. in this place, that it's me.

  564. I'm the one who's got to make that

  565. decision.

  566. I wonder if there's a lady in here this

  567. morning who perhaps in the last few

  568. weeks you've been distracted with this

  569. or that and anxieties and worries and

  570. you've been all worked up, but this

  571. morning Holy Spirit touches your heart

  572. and say, "Hey, it's you. You need to

  573. recommit. You need to come back. You

  574. need to get God first again."

  575. It starts

  576. with me.

  577. But I want you to notice something else.

  578. Not only do we see a personal decision,

  579. but I see a family commitment.

  580. There's a family commitment. Notice what

  581. he says. He says He starts with as for

  582. me.

  583. But notice how he continues the phrase.

  584. He doesn't just stay it's just about me.

  585. Joshua says it's about me

  586. and my house.

  587. Joshua is going to stand up

  588. as the leader of his home

  589. and say, "My house

  590. is going to be different than everybody

  591. else's house."

  592. Men, I got to talk to you for just a

  593. moment. I'm not preaching a big Father's

  594. Day message, but it is Father's Day

  595. and I don't want to miss an opportunity

  596. that the text has given us to talk to

  597. men.

  598. This might make people mad. This is not

  599. what is culturally acceptable.

  600. This is

  601. You're told not to preach on stuff like

  602. this or say stuff like this, but it's

  603. Bible and I believe it with all my heart

  604. and I think it'll keep your house

  605. together if you listen to what I'm about

  606. to tell you. The man

  607. is the leader of the home.

  608. It is the man's responsibility

  609. to lead his home.

  610. Now, we could spend entire sermon series

  611. months long defining and flushing that

  612. out and not trying to understand how

  613. that fits in culture. But, sometimes I

  614. think in churches we overthink things.

  615. God has said it, so let's abide by it.

  616. What has God said in his word? That the

  617. man is the head of the house.

  618. It's very clear.

  619. God has orchestrated and ordained a

  620. leadership system. It works in the home

  621. and it works in the church. And God has

  622. said it is up to men to be the spiritual

  623. leaders. You say, "Well, why did God

  624. make the man the spiritual leader?"

  625. Can I be really theological with you

  626. this morning?

  627. I have no idea.

  628. I don't know why God chose to do it the

  629. way that he did it. If I knew

  630. everything, the reason why God does

  631. everything that he does, then he

  632. wouldn't be God.

  633. He's sovereign. He chose. He made it. He

  634. did it. It's our job to just obey.

  635. Right?

  636. We live in a culture that is attacking

  637. the home.

  638. We live in a culture where the devil is

  639. doing everything he can to attack the

  640. home, and I'm burdened about it. You

  641. say, "Why are you so passionate about

  642. this?" Because you haven't been in my

  643. office the last month.

  644. Where I sit with men and women

  645. and I counsel them

  646. on their marriage

  647. multiple times.

  648. Multiple times.

  649. All I mean, we we live in a small

  650. community and and we I pastor a small

  651. church and you wouldn't think it'd be

  652. that bad. You Why is it so bad?

  653. Because the devil is attacking attacking

  654. attacking attacking the home.

  655. You don't see the men who sit there with

  656. tears in their eyes

  657. and say, "How am I supposed to lead?"

  658. You don't see the casualties.

  659. Where where a man

  660. would not man up in his house and lead,

  661. and now there's no religion at all in

  662. their home.

  663. He's fallen by the wayside

  664. because he would not stand up and lead

  665. his family

  666. spiritually.

  667. It is not Listen, I am thankful for

  668. women who are spiritual giants. And some

  669. of the greatest spiritual people in my

  670. life are women. And I love when a woman

  671. can get a hold of God. Women are some of

  672. the greatest prayers that I know. Some

  673. of the greatest prayer warriors that I

  674. know are women, and they can move the

  675. hand of God, and they can move heaven.

  676. And I am so thankful for women. But it

  677. is wrong of any man to try and let his

  678. wife be the spiritual guidance and

  679. leader in his home.

  680. The woman should not be the one who has

  681. to lead the family in prayer. Now, she

  682. can. She's allowed to, but it shouldn't

  683. have to be her idea every time it

  684. happens.

  685. Some man needs to stand up and say,

  686. "Hey, I think it's a good idea that we

  687. pray as a family."

  688. Somebody's got to stand up in the home

  689. today and say, "We are not doing those

  690. things, and we are going to do those

  691. things."

  692. Can I Can I tell you something

  693. that bothers me a little bit?

  694. Why Why is it

  695. that Mother's Day

  696. at church is packed out,

  697. but Father's Day at church, everybody is

  698. at the lake?

  699. Have you noticed this trend?

  700. We set attendance records on Mother's

  701. Day. Praise God for that. But where is

  702. everybody on Father's Day?

  703. On Mother's Day, we do what Mom wants.

  704. Y'all see where I'm going here?

  705. On Mother's Day we do what mom wants.

  706. We go to church.

  707. On Father's Day we do what dad wants.

  708. And we go to the lake. And we wonder why

  709. there is no masculinity, why there is no

  710. spiritualness in our homes today.

  711. It's because there are men who are more

  712. concerned about catching a fish

  713. than they are about getting their family

  714. in church.

  715. There are men who are sitting on the

  716. sidelines and the only way that they get

  717. to church is if their wife tells them

  718. it's time to go.

  719. Some of you wouldn't even be here this

  720. morning.

  721. You say, "I won't be here next week if

  722. you keep preaching like this." That's

  723. okay.

  724. Some of you wouldn't even be here this

  725. morning if your wife didn't say it's

  726. time to go.

  727. Where are the spiritual leaders in the

  728. home? Can I tell you it is not

  729. sustainable to make the woman carry the

  730. responsibility of spiritual leadership.

  731. It is cruelty because it's not how God

  732. designed it. That's our weight to carry.

  733. So, we carry the weight.

  734. Joshua said,

  735. "As for me

  736. and my house."

  737. I'm wondering today

  738. if there are some fathers on Father's

  739. Day who will say it's time that I clean

  740. some things up in my home.

  741. It's time that I make some decisions to

  742. lead my family to God first. Listen, I'm

  743. not picking on the lake. I'm not picking

  744. on fishing. I love doing all those

  745. things, but when they become more

  746. important than Jesus Christ,

  747. we've got a problem.

  748. And men today have a selfish problem.

  749. Men today have a me problem where

  750. whatever I want to do becomes most

  751. important and my family is just here to

  752. assist me.

  753. Right?

  754. We have got a major problem with manhood

  755. today because men have become selfish.

  756. I wonder if there's some men in this

  757. place

  758. or maybe some men who will watch this

  759. sermon later by the grace of God

  760. who will say on this day in this place

  761. I'm going to start leading my family

  762. spiritually.

  763. I'm going to start leading in prayer.

  764. I'm going to start some kind of family

  765. devotions. I'm going to put some time

  766. limits on the devices that my kids can

  767. use and my grandkids can use. We live in

  768. a digital age, and all kids want to do

  769. is sit there like this. And listen, I

  770. played video games growing up.

  771. Fine. Play video games, but have THAT

  772. KID GO OUTSIDE SOME, TOO.

  773. Go check on what they're what they're

  774. messaging their friends.

  775. Pay attention to who they're hanging out

  776. with and the habits that they're picking

  777. up. Somebody's got to guard the door of

  778. the home and serve the Lord.

  779. And it's God's it's God's choice

  780. that it's the man.

  781. And if that scares you a little bit

  782. let that be an indicator that you are

  783. not doing a good enough job.

  784. We need some men who will rise up and

  785. say, "I will be the leader."

  786. I love Christian women.

  787. Can I Can I

  788. We all ain't coming back anyways at this

  789. point, so I'm just going to say what

  790. needs to be said.

  791. >> [clears throat]

  792. >> You know one You know one thing that

  793. bothers me

  794. in churches?

  795. I want you to go home today and look up,

  796. I don't know, half a dozen churches on

  797. YouTube.

  798. Not necessarily our stripe, but like

  799. bigger churches.

  800. Can I use this term, contemporary

  801. churches? Can I use that? Y'all okay

  802. with that?

  803. You will find one thing in common.

  804. As you look at their services,

  805. you'll see their platform filled with

  806. people.

  807. This is I don't Lord, are you sure about

  808. this? I don't want to say this.

  809. You look at those people on that

  810. platform and you know what you're going

  811. to find.

  812. The platforms and the choirs are full of

  813. ladies. And God bless them.

  814. I'm so thankful for ladies that can

  815. sing.

  816. Our music would not be near as good as

  817. it is if it wasn't for the ladies who

  818. help us and we praise God for that.

  819. But why is it the case that when you

  820. look at a choir, you've got the whole

  821. choir

  822. full of ladies and then you got a little

  823. section over here that's got some men in

  824. it and you got a little section over

  825. here that's got some men in it and their

  826. only job is to bring the bass notes,

  827. right?

  828. Why is that the case? Why is it every

  829. worship team in America has five, six,

  830. seven, eight, 10 ladies and you've got

  831. maybe one guy?

  832. Maybe. Up there leading worship.

  833. I'm not picking on anybody. It's an

  834. indicator

  835. of what is happening in our nation.

  836. If men won't lead in church,

  837. if men will not lead in church, then

  838. then don't tell me you're leading at

  839. home.

  840. You

  841. It starts at home.

  842. And if if you want to lead in church,

  843. you better be leading at home.

  844. Where's the spiritual leadership?

  845. As for me and my house,

  846. we will serve the Lord.

  847. We will serve God.

  848. Joshua said, "I'm the leader on this. I

  849. got to go. Listen.

  850. Write down number two. We see the leader

  851. number one, write down number two.

  852. And we'll be done. I'm almost done.

  853. Number two, we see the Lord.

  854. Joshua said, "As for me and my house, we

  855. will serve the Lord."

  856. What's the big deal, Pastor John?

  857. Why does it matter who I serve? Why does

  858. it matter if the lake becomes more

  859. important than church? Why does it

  860. matter if my kids hang out with those

  861. kids? What What What is the big deal?

  862. Why does all this even matter to you?

  863. I want you to see

  864. the Lord in this passage. Look all the

  865. way back at verse number two, and we're

  866. going to walk through this. I want you

  867. to notice something.

  868. Joshua stands before the people in a

  869. place called Shechem, and he said,

  870. "Today we're going to rededicate

  871. ourselves to the Lord, but before we do

  872. any decision-making, we've got to get

  873. our eyes back on Jesus."

  874. Notice what Joshua tells them.

  875. And it's actually what Joshua is telling

  876. them is a word straight from God. Joshua

  877. is just going to reciprocate what God

  878. has told him. Look at verse two.

  879. And Joshua said unto all the people,

  880. "Thus saith the Lord God of Israel."

  881. What does God want to tell us?

  882. He said, "Thus saith the Lord your God

  883. of Israel, your fathers dwelt on the

  884. other side of the flood in old time,

  885. even Terah, the father of Abraham, and

  886. the father of Nahor, and they served

  887. other gods." So, we've set the stage.

  888. Who are we serving? Well, they served

  889. other gods, but notice what God did.

  890. Verse number three. I've got these

  891. phrases I'm going to draw your attention

  892. to phrases. I've got them highlighted in

  893. my Bible.

  894. This is his first one, verse three. God

  895. said, "And I took your father Abraham."

  896. Way back there, years ago, generations

  897. ago, before you were even a thought,

  898. nation of Israel, before any of you were

  899. even born,

  900. I had a plan.

  901. And in the midst of ungodliness and

  902. wickedness and chaos, I took Abraham. I

  903. found a man, and I got a man who would

  904. serve me, and I took him out of all that

  905. wickedness, and I had a plan for

  906. Abraham. But notice what happens. I took

  907. him from the other side of the flood and

  908. led him throughout all the land of

  909. Canaan and multiplied his seed and gave

  910. him Isaac. Now watch this. Here's

  911. another phrase. And I gave unto Isaac

  912. Jacob and Esau, and I gave Esau Mount

  913. Seir to possess it, but Jacob and his

  914. children went down to Egypt. You

  915. remember the story of Joseph. They all

  916. go down to Egypt. What is God doing? God

  917. is building a nation.

  918. Oh, I hope I can communicate this to

  919. you. Verse five. God said, "I sent Moses

  920. and also Aaron, and I plagued Egypt

  921. according to that which I did among

  922. them. And afterward, I brought you out."

  923. Do you see what God is doing? God is

  924. drawing attention not only to who he is,

  925. but to everything that he has done. He

  926. said, "I brought your fathers, verse

  927. six, out of the land of Egypt, and you

  928. came to the sea, and the Egyptians

  929. pursued after your fathers with chariots

  930. and horsemen under the Red Sea. And when

  931. they cried unto the Lord, he put

  932. darkness between you and the Egyptians

  933. and brought the sea upon them and

  934. covered them. And your eyes have seen

  935. what I have done in Egypt, and you dwelt

  936. in the wilderness a long season. And I

  937. brought you into the land of the

  938. Amorites, which dwelt on the other side

  939. Jordan, and they fought with you, and I

  940. gave them into your hand that you might

  941. possess their land. Watch this. And I

  942. destroyed them from before you." God

  943. said, "I have preserved you. I have

  944. built you. I have blessed you. I have

  945. protected you. I have provided for you.

  946. I have fought for you." And he keeps

  947. going. Verse number nine.

  948. Then Balak, the son of Zippor, rose,

  949. king of Moab, arose and warred against

  950. Israel and sent and called Balaam, the

  951. son of Beor, to curse you. You remember

  952. this story, right, in the Old Testament?

  953. But I would not hearken unto Balaam.

  954. Therefore, he blessed you still, so I

  955. delivered

  956. you out of his hand." God said, "I've

  957. protected you, and I've blessed you and

  958. I've provided for you and when somebody

  959. came to curse you, I turned his cursing

  960. into blessing and I've always been there

  961. for you. I've never failed you. I've

  962. been faithful to you. Verse 11, and you

  963. went over Jordan and came into Jericho.

  964. And the men of Jericho fought against

  965. you. We just talked about this a few

  966. weeks ago. The Amorites and the

  967. Perizzites and the Canaanites and the

  968. Hittites and the Girgashites and the

  969. Hivites and the Jebusites. And watch

  970. this. I delivered them all into your

  971. hand.

  972. And I sent the hornet before you which

  973. drove them out from before you, even the

  974. two kings of the Amorites, but not with

  975. thy sword nor with thy bow. Verse 13, I

  976. have given you a land for which you did

  977. not labor and cities which you did not

  978. build and you dwell in them. Of the

  979. vineyards and the olive yards which you

  980. planted not do you eat. Watch the first

  981. two words now of verse number 14. After

  982. all of this, after all that God has

  983. done, after all that God has provided,

  984. after all that God has given, after all

  985. that God has blessed, Joshua said, "Now

  986. therefore, choose you whom you're going

  987. to serve. You can either serve the gods

  988. which Abraham's father served on the

  989. other side. You can serve the false

  990. gods. You can serve the little gods. But

  991. look at all that God has done for you in

  992. light of who he is, in light of all he

  993. has done, in light of how he has

  994. provided, in light of how he has

  995. protected, in light of how he has

  996. blessed, in light of how he has turned

  997. your mourning into happiness and your

  998. cursing into blessing. In light of all

  999. that God has done for you, choose you

  1000. who you're going to serve. There's a

1001. choice here and it's an obvious choice.

1002. You can either serve a false god who's

1003. done nothing for you or you can serve

1004. the one true God who's done everything

1005. for you. And Joshua said, "As for me,

1006. I'll tell you what I'm going to do. It's

1007. no contest. It's no choice at all. I'm

1008. going to serve the God who has always

1009. been there for me. And this morning on

1010. this Sunday in this place, I've come to

1011. tell somebody that it is worth it to

1012. serve Jesus Christ. Because just as he

1013. was with the nation of Israel, and he

1014. took them through the water, and he took

1015. them through the fire, and he provided

1016. for them, and he blessed them, and he

1017. protected them, and he turned their

1018. blessing into or he turned their cursing

1019. into blessing, and he turned their

1020. mourning into happiness. Just as he did

1021. all of that for God's people back then,

1022. we serve the same God this morning, and

1023. he's done the same thing for you and I.

1024. How dare us get so selfish and caught up

1025. in ourself that we begin to look at the

1026. things that God hasn't done instead of

1027. focusing on who he is and what he has

1028. done. He has been so good to us. He's

1029. been way too good to us. If God says

1030. that the man's the leader of the home,

1031. he's done enough stuff I think we can

1032. obey him. If God says I'm supposed to go

1033. to church, I think he's done enough

1034. stuff for me, I'll listen to him. If God

1035. says I need to pray more, HE'S DONE

1036. ENOUGH STUFF, I'm going to listen to

1037. him. If God says it's time to serve the

1038. Lord, I think he's done enough stuff for

1039. me already that I can praise him, I can

1040. worship him, I can live my life for him.

1041. And this morning, as I conclude this on

1042. this Sunday, all of the things that God

1043. has done for us, all of the things that

1044. God has done for you, I want you to know

1045. a personal testimony from your pastor

1046. this morning. I'm not perfect, and I

1047. don't have it all together, but as for

1048. me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

1049. He's been too good to me. He's blessed

1050. me too much. He's forgiven me, and he's

1051. brought me this far. How can I not serve

1052. him? HOW CAN I NOT give him everything?

1053. How can I not stand on the truth of

  1054. God's word?

1055. And say, "God, if you want that sin

1056. gone, it's gone. If you want me to to

1057. you, I'll serve you. If you want me to

1058. work in that area, I'll work in that

1059. area. You want me to serve in that

1060. ministry, I'll serve in that ministry.

1061. You've been too good to me

1062. to not do it your way. As for me

  1063. and my house

1064. we're going to serve the Lord.

1065. We're going to do it God's way.

1066. We're going to do it in God's time.

1067. We're going to listen to what God has

  1068. said.

1069. In my house, we're going to prioritize

1070. God's word. We're going to clean up the

1071. filth that is on the TV. There are TV

1072. shows my kids are not allowed to watch.

  1073. Period. It's not a debate.

1074. They know it. If they come to your house

1075. and you're babysitting them and you turn

1076. that show on the TV, they'll say, "We're

1077. not allowed to watch this show." And

1078. they'll make you change it.

1079. Cuz they know, "We're not watching that.

1080. We're not putting that in our house.

1081. We're not listening to certain kinds of

1082. music in our house. We just ain't doing

  1083. it.

1084. My kids are not going to be exposed to

1085. the filth of this world. As for me and

1086. my house, we're going to serve the Lord.

1087. Pastor John, why does it matter? Have

1088. you seen all of the goodness?

1089. Have you looked at who he is? Have you

1090. noticed just how much he's done? I would

  1091. be an utter fool

1092. to try and go the other way

  1093. and serve anything else

  1094. than my God.

  1095. I don't want to serve a career. I don't

  1096. want to serve a dollar bill. I don't

  1097. want to serve a person. I don't I I I

1098. refuse to be bought or put into a box of

  1099. religion or a denominational label. I

1100. won't do it. Why? Because I have one

1101. goal and one goal only in my life. As

1102. for me and my house

1103. we will serve the Lord.

1104. I'm done. The message is over.

1105. I've got a video for you I want you to

  1106. watch.

1107. This is a video from the movie

  1108. Courageous.

1109. It's the very last scene in the movie.

  1110. And it's powerful.

1111. I want you to lean in and I want you to

1112. watch this this clip. It's about 4

1113. minutes long, 4 and 1/2 minutes long.

1114. And while you watch this, I want you to

  1115. pray and say, "God,

  1116. I want to commit

  1117. today

  1118. in this place,

  1119. I recommit myself.

  1120. I promise

  1121. from this day forward,

1122. as for me and my house,

1123. we will serve the Lord."
