  1. Well, praise the Lord. Take your Bibles

  2. and find your place in the book of

  3. Joshua this morning.

  4. [clears throat]

  5. Joshua chapter 20.

    Joshua 20 chapter mention

  6. Joshua chapter 20. This morning, I'm

    Joshua 20 chapter mention

  7. going to pray and ask the Lord to help

  8. us and then we'll jump right into the

  9. word of God for a few minutes today.

  10. Father in Jesus name we come and we say

  11. thank you that you are alive.

  12. Lord the grave could not defeat you.

  13. Death could not hold you. Lord you have

  14. defeated them both. You have risen in

  15. victory. And the same power that

  16. resurrected you from the grave lives on

  17. the inside of each and every one of us

  18. here this morning who are saved by the

  19. blood of Jesus. And we say thank you and

  20. we give you the praise and the glory

  21. this morning. We exalt your name and we

  22. lift you up. You alone are worthy of the

  23. worship. Help us now as we open the word

  24. of God. Lord, there are so many things

  25. that could be said from this passage

  26. this morning.

  27. But I only want to say the things that

  28. you would have me to say to your people

  29. today. And so, Father, I pray that you'd

  30. guide my mind and my heart this morning

  31. as I preach. And may we be exactly where

  32. you want me to be today. Help me to say

  33. only what you would have me to say. Help

  34. me not to say anything inaccurate or

  35. confusing, but may we illuminate and

  36. expound the Bible that you have given us

  37. and apply it to our lives right where we

  38. live. Help me as I preach today. I pray

  39. help those who are listening to receive

  40. the word with gladness and apply it to

  41. their heart. We'll give you the glory

  42. and the praise for it. We ask these

  43. things in Jesus name. Amen.

  44. Joshua chapter 20. This morning I want

    Joshua 20 chapter mention

  45. to preach on this title, my city of

  46. refuge. My city of refuge. And we're

  47. going to look at one of the most

  48. interesting Old Testament practices that

  49. creates a picture for you and I of the

  50. mercy and the grace of God. This is a

  51. wonderful, wonderful picture of the Old

  52. Testament process called the city of

  53. refuge and how they had their judic

  54. their their law system set up and how

  55. that applies what it pictures for you

  56. and I living in the New Testament. It's

  57. a wonderful wonderful picture. When you

  58. got in your vehicle this morning to come

  59. to church, you most likely

  60. you should have put on your seat belt,

  61. right? Why would you put on your seat

  62. belt? Well, because in the United

  63. States, we have a civil law that says

  64. you have to buckle your seat belt. And

  65. that's to protect us. When you came to a

  66. stop sign on your way here, you should

  67. have stopped because we have a civil law

  68. that commands us when you come to a stop

  69. sign, put the brakes on and stop. Not

  70. rolling stop. Don't roll through as

  71. you're looking. But the law says whether

  72. we obey it or not is up for debate. But

  73. the law says a stop, right? You come to

  74. a stop sign, you stop. If you came

  75. toward a red light, you stopped. Why?

  76. Because we have a civil law in the

  77. United States that says when it's red,

  78. you stop, and when it's green, you go,

  79. and when it's yellow, you speed up and

  80. get through it before it gets red.

  81. Right? That's what the law said. A civil

  82. law. We don't only do this in traffic

  83. laws, but we also have laws that govern

  84. our marriages and our land and our

  85. building codes and our finances and our

  86. workplace conduct, investments and

  87. mortgages and every virtually every area

  88. of our daily life, there are civil laws

  89. that are in place that we abide by in

  90. our culture. Right? Y'all with me? in

  91. ancient civilization, in the ancient

  92. Jewish culture, uh, where the nation of

  93. Israel is, when they're getting the book

  94. of Joshua, when that's being written,

  95. they did not have law enforcement

  96. departments at the state and the county

  97. and the city level like we have today.

  98. They didn't have people driving in

  99. patrol cars making sure everybody obeyed

  100. the civil laws.

  101. They did have established civil laws,

  102. though. That has not changed throughout

  103. history. Every culture, every

  104. civilization has had a group of civil

  105. laws that they abided by. Though they

  106. may have looked different for different

  107. cultures and at different times, our

  108. culture has the laws that that manage

  109. and keep us safe in this culture, in

  110. this busy culture that we live. Well, in

  111. ancient Jewish culture, it was very

  112. different. So, they had very different

  113. civil laws.

  114. When we come to Joshua chapter 20, we

    Joshua 20 chapter mention

  115. are introduced to one of those civil

  116. laws of the Old Testament period.

  117. We're familiar with the Ten Commandments

  118. that God gave Moses. Everybody remembers

  119. the Ten Commandments. But did you know

  120. that the Ten Commandments were not God's

  121. only commands? In fact, there are over

  122. 600

  123. commands that God gave to the nation of

  124. Israel to govern their civilization in

  125. the land of the promised land in the

  126. land of Canaan. Now, those laws that God

  127. gave to the nation of Israel were for a

  128. specific time and for a specific purpose

  129. and for a specific culture. So, you and

  130. I do not have to abide by all 600 of

  131. them. In fact, they're broken up into

  132. three categories. Now, I'm laying

  133. foundation. Y'all with me so far? We're

  134. going somewhere here. There are three

  135. categories of God's laws to the nation

  136. of Israel in the Old Testament. The

  137. first category is what we call the moral

  138. law. The moral m o r a l, the moral law.

  139. What is the moral law? It's the ten

  140. commandments. The ten commandments are

  141. God's law. They reveal God's character

  142. and they are true and to be obeyed by

  143. all people, all places, all times.

  144. Everybody who's ever breathed God's air

  145. has a a responsibility to live up to the

  146. moral law. Now, we understand that's

  147. impossible, right? We need a savior. We

  148. need somebody to pay to pay our debt

  149. because we could never live up to the

  150. moral law, but God's expectation is that

  151. everybody does. Does this make sense to

  152. everybody? That's the first category,

  153. moral laws, the ten commandments. The

  154. second category that you will find in

  155. the Old Testament is ceremonial laws.

  156. These laws were very specific to the

  157. nation of Israel and they had to do with

  158. how you were to offer sacrifices and

  159. behave yourself in the Old Testament

  160. tabernacle or temple. They had a very

  161. different sacrificial worship service

  162. than we have now. They had to make

  163. sacrifice for their sin. In the Old

  164. Testament, you and I, the sacrifice has

  165. already been paid, right? Jesus has been

  166. our sacrifice. Jesus paid it also. We

  167. just come and we worship him for what he

  168. has already done. But in the Old

  169. Testament, they set out a lot of laws, a

  170. lot of things that it had to be done.

  171. God wanted his worship to be done a

  172. certain way, which that, by the way, has

  173. not changed. God still expects worship

  174. to be done his way, not our way. But in

  175. the Old Testament, it was very

  176. different. And so, God gave them a set

  177. of specific guidelines, specific things.

  178. These laws are ceremonial laws. Now, let

  179. me tell you something. You and I do not

  180. live under the ceremonial laws of the

  181. Old Testament. We do not have to abide

  182. by them. Can I tell you why? When Jesus

  183. came and offered himself as the

  184. permanent ultimate final sacrifice, he

  185. completely fulfilled every single one of

  186. the ceremonial laws in the Old

  187. Testament. So, they have been completed.

  188. There's no need to go back and perform

  189. these rituals any longer. Jesus on the

  190. cross said, "It is finished." He

  191. completed it all. So, you and I, we come

  192. and we worship our savior. So, but when

  193. you're reading the Old Testament, you'll

  194. find moral law, ten commandments, that

  195. applies to everybody. You'll find

  196. ceremonial laws that was for the temple.

  197. And then you will find a third category

  198. of law, and that is the civil laws.

  199. That is the the laws that governed the

  200. daily activity in ancient Israel. The

  201. the laws that told you, "Hey, put your

  202. seat belt on when you're in your car."

  203. the laws that protected them and guided

  204. them through their daily life. And this

  205. morning we come to one of those civil

  206. laws in the book of Joshua and chapter

  207. 20. And it's a wonderful exper. You say,

  208. "Why would God include this in the

  209. Bible?" Because when we're getting ready

  210. to read these verses, we're going to

  211. read them and you're going to think,

  212. "Great. What does that have to do with

  213. me?" And hopefully by the end of this

  214. morning, I can I can do a an adequate

  215. job of communicating God's word to us

  216. and applying it so that you understand

  217. why God included the civil laws,

  218. specifically this one into your Old

  219. Testament so that you and I can learn

  220. from it. Are you ready to go? All right.

  221. The city of refuge, Joshua 20, look at

  222. verse number one.

  223. The Lord also spake unto Joshua, saying,

  224. "Speak to the children of Israel,

  225. saying,"Appoint out for you cities of

  226. refuge whereof I spake unto you by the

  227. hand of Moses, that the slayer that

  228. kleth any person," this is key. Now,

  229. watch these words, unawares or

  230. unwittingly, that is unintentionally or

  231. accidentally may flee thither, and they

  232. shall be your refuge from thee. This is

  233. a key, avenger of blood. Verse four. And

  234. when he that doth flee unto one of those

  235. cities shall stand at the entering of

  236. the gate of the city, and shall declare

  237. his cause in the ears of the elders of

  238. that city, they shall take him into the

  239. city unto them, and give him a place

  240. that he may dwell among them. And if the

  241. avenger of blood pursue after him, then

  242. they shall not deliver up the slayer up

  243. into his the avenger of blood's hands

  244. because he smoked his neighbor

  245. unwittingly or accidentally and hated

  246. him not before time. Verse six, and he

  247. shall dwell in that city until he stand

  248. before the congregation for judgment and

  249. until the death of the high priest that

  250. shall be in those days. Then shall the

  251. slayer return and come unto his own city

  252. and unto his own house unto the city

  253. from whence he fled. And they appointed

  254. Cadesh in Galilee in the mount napali

  255. and Sheckchham in Mount Ephraim in

  256. Kirjba with Kirj Arba which is Hebron in

  257. the mount of Judah. And on the other

  258. side Jordan by Jericho eastward they

  259. assigned Beaser in the wilderness upon

  260. the plain out of the tribe of Reuben and

  261. Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad

  262. and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of

  263. Manasseh. These were the cities

  264. appointed for all the children of

  265. Israel, and for the stranger that

  266. sojourned among them, that whosoever

  267. kleth any person unawares might flee

  268. thither, and not by die by the hand of

  269. the avenger of blood until he stood

  270. before the congregation.

  271. Wow. What in the world does all that

  272. mean? I'm going to do my best to explain

  273. it. I'm going to give you just some

  274. points, and you can write these down,

  275. and we're just going to work through

  276. this passage. Okay? The first thing you

  277. can write down if you're taking notes is

  278. the picture of the city of refuge. Right

  279. from the beginning, before we get too

  280. deep into this, I want you to understand

  281. what is taking place in the Old

  282. Testament and how it specifically

  283. applies to us in the New Testament. That

  284. way, as we work our way through this

  285. passage, we can make applications as we

  286. go. All right, here's the picture of the

  287. city of refuge. The city of refuge in

  288. the Old Testament is a picture of our

  289. refuge in Jesus Christ in the New

  290. Testament. Did you get that? The Old

  291. Testament city of refuge is a picture

  292. for you and I today of what Jesus

  293. provides for us in the New Testament. We

  294. could say it this way. Jesus is my city

  295. of refuge. I have refuge in the person

  296. of Jesus Christ. Now, the way that that

  297. works and all of the similarities are

  298. there are a vast amount of similarities

  299. and we're going to work through them

  300. here this morning. And and by the way, I

  301. don't I don't I'm going to be very

  302. careful. I don't want us to overallize

  303. scripture this morning. But the picture

  304. is clear. Okay? So, we're going to look

  305. at what they did. We're going to apply

  306. it to what Jesus did and we're just

  307. going to take it at face value. One

  308. other thing that to note is that every

  309. picture is incomplete. You understand

  310. that? If you dig too far into any

  311. picture, you're gonna find flaws. This

  312. morning, I came out of my house very

  313. early in the morning and I came walking

  314. over and the sun was just I the sky was

  315. just getting pink. I mean, it was just

  316. barely getting daylight this morning and

  317. our we have the our flag out front here

  318. and it just looked beautiful. The sun

  319. comes up right over here and it was just

  320. getting light on the horizon back here

  321. and the flag was flying and it was just

  322. enough light to see the flag and it had

  323. its little solar light illuminating it a

  324. little more and it was just a beautiful

  325. picture. The steeple was there and so I

  326. thought, my goodness, I'm going to pause

  327. right here and take a picture of this.

  328. So I stopped halfway between my house

  329. and the church, the long walk that I

  330. have every morning. I stopped right

  331. there to take this picture and I I

  332. pulled out my phone and I snapped the

  333. picture and I looked at it and I said,

  334. "That looks terrible.

  335. I'm standing here looking at it and it's

  336. beautiful, but on the picture just

  337. doesn't do it justice. Have you ever

  338. done that? Have you been in that place

  339. where you thought, man, I've got to

  340. record this. I've got to capture this

  341. image, but it's just not complete. Okay,

  342. understand that all pictures are

  343. incomplete. When we come to this

  344. passage, if you dig too deep into it and

  345. you start nitpicking every single tiny

  346. detail, you're going to be like, "Well,

  347. this doesn't work and that doesn't."

  348. Okay, understand it's a picture. It's

  349. not the real thing. It's just giving us

  350. an image that we can look forward or

  351. look towards Jesus with. Does that make

  352. sense? So, let me explain it to you. The

  353. Old Testament, they didn't have a court

  354. system like we understand in our

  355. American mindset, but instead they would

  356. have sought justice primarily through

  357. retribution. They didn't have a court

  358. system with a judge who would who would

  359. execute judgment and and perform

  360. justice. So in the case of a murder, the

  361. closest male relative of the one who has

  362. been murdered, the one who has been

  363. killed would be in charge of performing

  364. or satisfying justice for his family. So

  365. if someone were to kill a family member

  366. of mine, I would be called, the Hebrew

  367. word is the goel. It's the same word

  368. used of Boaz in the book of Ruth, the

  369. kinsman redeemer, the next of kin. his

  370. job would be to go perform justice for

  371. his family and and it was capital

  372. punishment. So if someone kills a close

  373. family member of mine, it is my

  374. obligation then to go slay them so that

  375. justice can be performed in my family.

  376. Now please, this does not apply to

  377. today. Y'all understand this was for a

  378. specific time. Go talk to Jason. We have

  379. a court system today. Don't do this

  380. today. But back then this is how it

  381. worked. And so the avenger of blood,

  382. that is the Hebrew word goel, the

  383. kinsman redeemer, would be in charge of

  384. pursuing justice for his family. Now

  385. what about in the case where it is an

  386. accidental killing, involuntary

  387. manslaughter is what we would call it

  388. today. You're you're working in the

  389. field. In fact, there's a story in the

  390. Bible that this exact thing happens.

  391. They're they're working in the field and

  392. the the head of the axe flies off and it

  393. hits somebody in the head and kills him.

  394. So, what do you do in that case? You're

  395. buddies. You're working alongside each

  396. other. Something happens and all of a

  397. sudden you have killed your best friend

  398. completely by accident. Well, there's

  399. still an avenger of blood because

  400. there's been a death and it's the

  401. avenger of blood's job and and probably

  402. his natural tendency now to pursue you

  403. and slay you. But it was an accident.

  404. You didn't mean you're as hurt as they

  405. are, but now you're running for your

  406. life. Do you see the dilemma? Well, God

  407. is going to provide for this dilemma.

  408. He's going to provide six cities of

  409. refuge where this person who has

  410. accidentally killed someone else can run

  411. to this city of refuge and as long as

  412. they're in the city, they'll be safe

  413. from the avenger of blood. That's the

  414. picture. Does this make sense so far?

  415. What does it what does it picture then?

  416. Okay, here's here's what we believe.

  417. First of all, you have the city of

  418. refuge. What is that picture? Well,

  419. we've already stated the city of refuge

  420. pictures the new is a new test uh

  421. pictures the New Testament of Jesus

  422. Christ. He is our city of refuge. We've

  423. run to him and we are safe. All right,

  424. does that make sense? What about the the

  425. one who has slayed? Who is the guilty in

  426. the picture? Well, the guilty is you and

  427. I. We are the ones who have committed

  428. crimes whether on purpose or accidental.

  429. We are the one who is guilty and we are

  430. the one who who judgment is coming for.

  431. Now, this is really interesting. Who is

  432. the third party then? The goel.

  433. Who would be the one who is the avenger

  434. of blood?

  435. You and I guilty of sin. We'll just call

  436. it sin. You and I guilty of sin. And so

  437. we need a place of refuge to hide from

  438. the avenger of blood. Who is the avenger

  439. of blood? Well, you might be thinking

  440. right away that it's Satan. That might

  441. have been the first one that popped in.

  442. It's the devil. He's the one who's after

  443. us all. And there is a devil who is

  444. after us all. But he's not the avenger

  445. of blood in the picture. You know who

  446. the avenger of blood is? It's God.

  447. God is the avenger of blood. Because God

  448. is the only one who can judge for sin.

  449. God is the only one who is holy. Don't

  450. give Satan the power to hurt you. He has

  451. no power outside of what God gives him.

  452. So in our picture, you have and this

  453. will we're going to explain all this,

  454. but you have to understand you have the

  455. city of refuge. That's Jesus. You have

  456. you and I who are guilty and you have

  457. God who is the avenger of blood whose

  458. holiness demands that he judge sin. So

  459. if you come face to face with almighty

  460. God outside of the person of Jesus

  461. Christ, you will pay for your sin in an

  462. eternity called hell. Does that make

  463. sense to everybody? But if you run to

  464. our city of refuge and you find rest in

  465. the person of Jesus Christ, then Jesus

  466. literally sealed you with his own blood

  467. from the wrath of a thrice holy God.

  468. That is the picture of the city of

  469. refuge. Now let's look at how it works

  470. very quickly this morning. I'll give

  471. these to you very very quickly. Number

  472. one, the plan. Write down the plan for

  473. the city of refuge. I think that this is

  474. number two. Number one was the p excuse

  475. me, number one, the picture. Number two,

  476. the plan for the city of refuge. This

  477. wasn't something that they thought up

  478. just, you know, one day Moses and Joshua

  479. are thinking and Moses thinks, well, you

  480. know what? This might be a problem.

  481. Let's just throw this out there. This

  482. might we'll just try this. Let's just

  483. try the city of refuge system and see if

  484. it works. And it wasn't something that

  485. that was reactive. Often times, uh, I

  486. will pre I've had this happen multiple

  487. times in my preaching. I will preach a

  488. sermon that is preached proactively,

  489. meaning I'm trying to get ahead of a

  490. problem. I'm trying to tell you what the

  491. danger is before you do the problem. And

  492. somebody in the audience is already

  493. having a problem with the thing that I'm

  494. talking about in the sermon. And they

  495. think I'm preaching the message

  496. reactively because somehow I found out

  497. what they're struggling with and now I'm

  498. out to get them in this morning's

  499. sermon. Right? It happens more than you

  500. would think. And I'm just preaching

  501. proactively saying, "Hey, don't do this

  502. because there's dangers involved." Okay?

  503. When you come to this passage, the city

  504. of refuge was not reactive. It wasn't

  505. like, "Oh no, we have a dilemma. we've

  506. got to hurry up and fix this or come up

  507. with a lastm minute solution. No, it was

  508. proactive.

  509. Here, here's what I'm telling you. God

  510. had a plan long ago for how he was going

  511. to orchestrate this dilemma. Look, look

  512. at some passages. You can write these

  513. down. Exodus 21 12 and 13, years and

  514. years before they ever crossed the

  515. Jordan River, God has prescribed what's

  516. going to happen. He said he he that

  517. smiteth a man, excuse me, he that

  518. smiteth a man so that he die shall be

  519. surely put to death. That is capital

  520. punishment. You kill a man, you die for

  521. his life. The next verse says, "And if a

  522. man lie not in weight, but God deliver

  523. him into his hand, then will I appoint

  524. thee a place whether he shall flee."

  525. Okay, so if you kill somebody in cold

  526. blood, you will pay your life for their

  527. blood. But if it's an accident, God

  528. said, "I'm going to prepare a place that

  529. you might run where you'll be safe."

  530. There's other passages. Numbers chapter

    Numbers 35 chapter mention

  531. 35, Deuteronomy chapter 4, Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy 4 chapter mention Deuteronomy 19 chapter mention

  532. chapter 19, all speak of the city of

  533. refuge that is to come. It's prophetic.

  534. I'm going to establish these places for

  535. you that is a refuge. What does that

  536. mean for you and I? I'm thankful this

  537. morning that God had a plan for my

  538. deliverance.

  539. He had a plan for my place of refuge

  540. before the foundations of the world

  541. began. Let me read a few verses to you

  542. this morning in 2 Timothy chapter 1 and

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  543. verse number nine. The Bible says, "Who

  544. hath saved us and called us with a holy

  545. calling, not according to our works, but

  546. according to his own purpose and grace,

  547. which was given us in Christ Jesus

  548. before the world began."

  549. God said, "I've got a plan for your

  550. redemption. I've got a plan for your

  551. safety. I've got a plan for your

  552. eternity. I know how I'm going to fix

  553. all this." Before the world began, how

  554. about this one in 1 Peter 1 19 and 20?

  555. but with the precious blood of Christ as

  556. of a lamb without blemish and without

  557. spot who verily was fore orained before

  558. the foundation of the world but was

  559. manifest in these last times for you.

  560. Jesus was not the backup plan. Jesus

  561. dying for our sins was not a reactive

  562. event in God's calendar where he's

  563. thinking, I got to come up with

  564. something to fix the mess that they're

  565. in. No, no, no. Before God ever created

  566. Adam, he knew that we were going to mess

  567. it up. And he already had a plan on how

  568. he was going to fix it through Jesus

  569. Christ. Revelation 13 and verse number

  570. eight. And all that dwell upon the earth

  571. shall worship him whose names are not

  572. written in the book of life of the lamb

  573. slain before the foundations of the

  574. world. You see g sometimes we think that

  575. oh Jesus came to this earth and and and

  576. and they rejected him and they killed

  577. him and oh poor Jesus. No, it's not poor

  578. Jesus. He had a plan from the beginning.

  579. God knew what was going to happen in his

  580. sovereignty and he had a plan for you

  581. and I to be redeemed through the blood

  582. of Jesus Christ. I'm thankful there was

  583. a plan for my city of refuge. But put

  584. down number two,

  585. the purpose of the city of refuge. Look

  586. at verse number three.

  587. Chapter 20 verse number three. that the

  588. slayer that kleth any person unawares

  589. and unwittingly may flee thither and and

  590. they shall be your refuge from the

  591. avenger of blood. The purpose of the

  592. city of refuge was to provide a place of

  593. protection for the one who is guilty of

  594. killing another person accidentally.

  595. And I used two words in that statement

  596. on purpose. the word guilty and the word

  597. accidentally

  598. because both can be true.

  599. Even if it's an accident,

  600. you're still guilty,

  601. right? Even if it's unintentional,

  602. you're still guilty. And so, the purpose

  603. of the place of refuge was to provide a

  604. place of protection for the one who is

  605. guilty of killing another person

  606. accidentally. Now, who's going to decide

  607. whether he was guilty or not? Well, it

  608. tells us in verse four, we'll get here

  609. in a moment, that the the people, the

  610. elders within that city are going to

  611. meet him at the gate and he's going to

  612. tell them his side of the story and then

  613. they're going to they're going to be the

  614. judge essentially and decide whether it

  615. was accidental or intentional. And if

  616. they deem it was accidental, then

  617. they'll let him into the city. We'll see

  618. that in in verse number four.

  619. But but stated plainly before we get to

  620. that part, we can say that the city of

  621. refuge was a place of safety for the man

  622. who had committed a crime.

  623. Whether it was accidental or or on

  624. purpose, somebody's life has still been

  625. lost. Somebody's family is still

  626. hurting. Some somebody has still lost a

  627. family member. You're still guilty.

  628. A place of safety was necessary because

  629. of at the end of verse three, the

  630. avenger of blood. We've already

  631. explained him. This is the Hebrew word

  632. goel. It's used of Boaz in the book of

  633. Ruth. It means the kinsman redeemer. Now

  634. in the book of Ruth, we see the Goel and

  635. he's doing his job of redeeming the land

  636. and redeeming the seed of his his

  637. brothers and he's raising and God uses

  638. that wonderfully. But in this case, we

  639. see the Goel as the kinsman redeemer as

  640. the avenger of blood, the one who is to

  641. cast judgment. And by the way, God God

  642. does both. God is always the goel and he

  643. accomplishes both. He is the one who

  644. redeems us through the blood of Jesus

  645. Christ, but he is also the one who is

  646. just and holy and must judge sin.

  647. So God is the picture or the the the

  648. avenger of blood is a picture of God.

  649. So the avenger of blood pictures for us

  650. that judgment must be passed upon those

  651. who have committed whether intentional

  652. or accidental God must pass judgment on

  653. somebody.

  654. How many of you know that some probably

  655. before you were saved and before you got

  656. in church and before you started

  657. studying your Bible, you did things that

  658. were wrong, but you did them in

  659. ignorance.

  660. Paul talks about this. Paul said, "I did

  661. things. I sinned against God, but I

  662. didn't know I was sinning. I didn't know

  663. any better. I did things that were

  664. wrong. And and we could even say it

  665. maybe this way. I did them on accident.

  666. If I had known better, I probably

  667. wouldn't have done it. Have you been

  668. there? Before you were saved, before you

  669. studied your Bible, before you knew what

  670. God expected of you, you did things and

  671. and you didn't know you were sinning. It

  672. wasn't intentional.

  673. But the fact of the matter is that

  674. thrice, holy God must judge sin, whether

  675. it was accidental or intentional. The

  676. avenger of blood had a a a job. He had

  677. to avenge the blood of his family.

  678. And so God must avenge the sin of

  679. people.

  680. The wrath of God, the holiness of God

  681. demands judgment for sin. We cannot say

  682. God is holy and then make arrangements

  683. for him to excuse sins. Oh no, how often

  684. do we do this, right? Well, God is love

  685. and God is grace and God just wants

  686. everybody to go to heaven. And listen,

  687. all three of those statements are

  688. absolutely true. But you cannot have

  689. those three statements and exclude from

  690. the character of God his holiness at the

  691. same time. There's a dual character. He

  692. is both the kinsman redeemer and the

  693. avenger of blood. His holiness demands

  694. judgment for wrongdoing. So whether you

  695. mean to be a bad sinner or not, you have

  696. committed sin. And because we have

  697. committed sin, judgment from a thrice

  698. holy God must come down. Otherwise,

  699. justice cannot be served.

  700. So the avenger of blood is out to get

  701. the slayer even though it was

  702. involuntary.

  703. So God then if if we believe that Jesus

  704. is God and we believe that God is God,

  705. God is the kinsman redeemer and he is

  706. the goel. Let's put it in our passage.

  707. God then is both the avenger of blood

  708. and the city of refuge because in his

  709. holiness he has to judge sin but in his

  710. grace and his mercy he provides Jesus as

  711. our safety. Is this making sense to

  712. everybody? Don't you see the wonderful

  713. picture? Okay, let's move on. Let me

  714. give you a verse and then we'll move on.

  715. Psalm 46 and verse one says, "God is our

  716. refuge and strength, a very present help

  717. in trouble.

  718. God is holy. God is also loving. And

  719. those two work together perfectly in

  720. God's plan through the redemption of

  721. Jesus. Write down number four. I think

  722. this is number four. The process of the

  723. city of refuge. The process. How did it

  724. work? Well, let's notice verse number

  725. four. Now when he that doth flee unto

  726. one of those cities shall stand at the

  727. entering of the gate of the city and

  728. shall declare his cause in the ears of

  729. the elders of that city, they shall take

  730. him into the city unto them and give him

  731. a place that he may dwell among them. So

  732. here's what has to happen. When the man

  733. who had committed the involuntary

  734. manslaughter comes to one of the cities

  735. of refuge, he would be met at the gate

  736. of the city by the elders of the city,

  737. which was common in that day for the

  738. elders, the leaders of the city to sit

  739. at the gate. And so here he comes and

  740. he's running. Uh notice the word in the

  741. beginning of verse number four. And when

  742. he that doth flee, you see that word

  743. flee. He's in a hurry to get there and I

  744. would be too. When he arrives, he comes

  745. running up to the gate of the city. He

  746. would present his case and and they

  747. would decide if he was eligible to be

  748. protected in that city. If they deemed

  749. that the murder was done intentionally,

  750. then they would receive him into the

  751. city. If they if they deemed the murder

  752. was or excuse me, if they deemed it was

  753. intentionally, they would not allow him

  754. into the city. But if it was deemed an

  755. accident, if it was involuntary, then

  756. they would receive him into the city and

  757. provide him a place of protection.

  758. However,

  759. every picture is incomplete. And this is

  760. one of the ways that this picture is

  761. incomplete because you and I are guilty.

  762. Sometimes we may sin on accident, but

  763. most times we sin on purpose,

  764. right?

  765. And we can come before the the judge and

  766. we can try and plead our case all we

  767. want, but at the end of the day, we are

  768. guilty of on purpose sin. But you know,

  769. the good news is that nobody is turned

  770. away from the gate of Jesus Christ. We

  771. are all guilty of sin, but we are all

  772. invited to come inside through the blood

  773. of Jesus and find a place of protection.

  774. All you've got to do is come through

  775. Jesus. John 14 and verse 6, Jesus said,

  776. "I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  777. No man comes to the father but by me."

  778. Jesus said, "I am the only way to stand

  779. before a thrice holy God and all are

  780. welcome to come." Romans chapter 10 and

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  781. verse number 13. Whosoever

  782. shall call on the name of the Lord shall

  783. be saved. You know what whosoever means?

  784. Anybody, everybody, whoever wants to can

  785. come into the city of refuge called

  786. Jesus and find safety and protection

  787. from the wrath of God.

  788. And by the way, if you have never

  789. received Christ as your savior this

  790. morning,

  791. then you ought to flee.

  792. Flee to the arms of Jesus Christ today

  793. and allow him to protect you from the

  794. wrath of God. If you are outside of

  795. Jesus, there is absolutely nothing

  796. separating you from the judgment of a

  797. thrice holy God except his mercy to let

  798. you breathe his air. That's the only

  799. thing at any moment. God is just and

  800. righteous in knocking you out and

  801. causing his judgment to fall upon you.

  802. He's just in doing that because you have

  803. sin and he is the avenger. His holiness

  804. demands he judge sin. You are walking on

  805. thin ice. You ought to run as fast as

  806. you can to the altar to the arms of

  807. Jesus Christ and said, "Please protect

  808. me. I'm trusting in you to do what I

  809. cannot do. No baptism can protect you.

  810. Money can't protect you. An offering

  811. plate can't protect you. A pastor can't

  812. protect you. There is nothing that

  813. stands between you and the judgment of

  814. God. So you ought to flee to the arms of

  815. Jesus this morning and receive him as

  816. your savior.

  817. So the process,

  818. there's no safety outside of Jesus. They

  819. would come and decide what's the what's

  820. the ruling. I'm so thankful with Jesus.

  821. He's already made the ruling and he

  822. said, "Whosoever will may come. Anybody

  823. guilty or not, on purpose or on

  824. accident, you just come and let me cover

  825. your sin." Now, there's a few more

  826. things we've got to notice very quickly.

  827. Number five, there's the protection of

  828. the city.

  829. The protection of the city in verse

  830. number five. And if the avenger of the

  831. blood pursue after him, then they shall

  832. not deliver the slayer up into his hand

  833. because he smoked his neighbor

  834. unwillingly unwittingly and hated him

  835. not before time. So here's the picture.

  836. If the avenger of blood follows the one

  837. who has killed his family and he follows

  838. him up to the gate of the city of refuge

  839. and the rulers of that city have already

  840. deemed that it was an accident and it

  841. was unintentional and they have allowed

  842. him to come into the city and now the

  843. the avenger of blood arrives at the city

  844. in hot pursuit to cast judgment on this

  845. one who has wronged his family which is

  846. his his his job and he says let me have

  847. him I've got to I've got to perform

  848. perform justice on behalf of my family.

  849. Then the elders of the city would say

  850. no. As long as he is in our city, you

  851. can't have him. As long as he is within

  852. these walls, you can't access him. He is

  853. safe. There is protection in the city.

  854. So it is with you and I and our

  855. salvation. When we come to Jesus and we

  856. call on the name of the Jesus Christ and

  857. he saves us from our sin there. The

  858. wrath of God cannot access you. He is

  859. not going to turn you back over. This is

  860. one of the big problems with with people

  861. who teach that you can lose your

  862. salvation because the image is you've

  863. run into the city and Christ has

  864. embraced you and Christ has protecting

  865. you and then you that Christ decides

  866. that you can't stay there any longer. So

  867. he throws you out over the wall into the

  868. wrath of God. What foolishness. Jesus

  869. would never. The Bible teaches from

  870. cover to cover that once you are saved,

  871. you're always safe. He's not going to

  872. turn you back loose and let let the

  873. wrath of God affect you. No. If you are

  874. in Christ, you are safe in Christ

  875. forever. You are protected by the blood

  876. of Jesus Christ. Notice number six,

  877. the permanence of the city of refuge.

  878. It's a permanent deal. Look at verse

  879. number six. And he shall dwell in that

  880. city until he stand before the

  881. congregation for judgment and until the

  882. death, this is so amazing, until the

  883. death of the high priest. shall be in

  884. those days. Then shall the slayer return

  885. and come into his own city and unto his

  886. own house, unto the city from whence he

  887. fled. So there is a clause here in which

  888. he would be able to exit the city and

  889. live freely. What is the clause? When

  890. the high priest

  891. when the high priest has died,

  892. who is our high priest?

  893. Come on, don't go sleep on me now. Who's

  894. our high priest? When the high priest

  895. has died, you may now go free because

  896. your penalty has been paid. Now, this is

  897. an Old Testament picture, but it's

  898. pointing us to something very valuable

  899. that's going to come in the New

  900. Testament. When Jesus Christ, who is our

  901. high priest, gave up his life on the

  902. cross, he paid the penalty for our sins

  903. so that we can now go free. Isn't that

  904. wonderful news? There's a second aspect

  905. of it, though. Not only did our priest,

  906. our high priest die for us, but our high

  907. priest lives forever. Our high priest

  908. did not stay dead. So, he's accomplished

  909. the death part. Hey, I'm going to die

  910. and pay the penalty of the sin. So, now

  911. you can go free if you want to, but I'm

  912. going to come back to life so that I'm

  913. always alive and I'm never going to die

  914. so that you're always protected and the

  915. the avenger of blood can never access

  916. you. Notice what it says. Let me let me

  917. explain it just a little more detailed.

  918. Here we In verse number six, he shall

  919. dwell in that city and stand before the

  920. congregation for judgment until the

  921. death of the high priest. That shall be

  922. in those days. Okay, that's that's

  923. penalty paid. You're free to go now.

  924. Then shall a slayer return and come to

  925. his own city and his own house.

  926. But but if the high priest, the

  927. indication then is that as long as the

  928. high priest is alive, he's protected

  929. within the city.

  930. Here's the image for you and I. Jesus

  931. Christ is alive and well today. He's not

  932. going anywhere. He's seated at the right

  933. hand of God. He's ruling and reigning in

  934. all sovereignty and all power. And as

  935. long as Jesus is alive, listen very

  936. carefully. As long as Jesus is alive,

  937. the wrath of God cannot access the child

  938. of God. And Jesus will never die. So for

  939. all eternity, you and I are safe under

  940. the blood of Jesus Christ, our high

  941. priest. The book of Hebrews talks about

  942. our high priest and how great of a high

  943. priest we have in the person of Jesus.

  944. So Jesus fulfills both the role of the

  945. high priest and the role of the city of

  946. refuge. He has accomplished it all. He

  947. has fulfilled it all. That means your

  948. eternal security is in Jesus.

  949. Put down number seven. And this is where

  950. we'll end this morning. We're done.

  951. Number seven is the placement of the

  952. city of refuge. These last verses are

  953. going to point out six locations,

  954. specific locations where the city of

  955. refuge would would be placed. The

  956. placement of these cities of refuge.

  957. Now, it's interesting that these six

  958. cities, you can come whenever you're

  959. ready, dear. The six cities that are

  960. spaced throughout the land are spaced

  961. evenly.

  962. There's three on that side of Jordan.

  963. And there's three on this side of

  964. Jordan. We have six cities. And what's

  965. interesting is that no matter where you

  966. are in the land of Canaan, you are no

  967. more than one day's journey to the city

  968. of refuge. You are always within reach.

  969. They were very strategic in where they

  970. placed them. They wanted this city and

  971. that city. And you can look at a map and

  972. it'll show you where the in fact the map

  973. I printed for you last week will show

  974. it'll highlight the city of refuge. And

  975. you can see how they spaced them out

  976. through the land of Canaan on that side

  977. of Jordan and this side of Jordan. So

  978. that no matter where you were, no matter

  979. where the accident happened, no matter

  980. where the crime took place, you were no

  981. more than one day away from a city of

  982. refuge. What's the picture? What's the

  983. image?

  984. Jesus is always available.

  985. It does not matter who you are or where

  986. you are or what you've done or where

  987. your p what your past looks like or or

  988. the things that you want to hide and not

  989. let anybody know. Jesus is available to

  990. everyone. You are no more far you are no

  991. farther away from Jesus today than you

  992. have ever been. You are within a reach

  993. of Jesus Christ. Now to stay outside of

  994. Jesus

  995. is to put yourself at the mercy of God

  996. who at any moment could take your breath

  997. from you and cast you [music] into an

  998. eternal hell. And he's just and

  999. righteous in doing so. He has an

1000. obligation to do so. And the only way

1001. you escape that wrath is to flee. Run

1002. into the arms of Jesus who died on

1003. Calvar's cross. And with his arms spread

1004. open wide and blood running down his

1005. body and off of his face, he proclaimed,

1006. "Father, forgive them. I'm dying in

1007. their place. With my blood, I will pay

1008. the penalty of their sins, the penalty

1009. of their crimes. Everything they've done

1010. wrong, I pay for it in full. It is

1011. finished. I fulfilled the Old Testament

1012. picture. I am the ultimate sacrifice.

1013. And anyone who finds refuge in Jesus can

1014. go to heaven and spend eternity in the

1015. presence of God. You can't earn your way

1016. there. You can't buy your way there. You

1017. can't you can't do enough good things to

1018. get yourself there. Oh, but if you will

1019. just run to the city of refuge that we

1020. have in Jesus, you will find peace and

1021. comfort and eternal security. And you

1022. will be saved for all of eternity. Jesus

1023. is available to all, rich and poor,

1024. black and white. Those who have money

1025. and those who don't. Those who have cars

1026. and those who don't. Those who wear nice

1027. clothes and those who don't. Jesus is

1028. available to all. He's available to the

1029. Catholic and the Presbyterian and the

1030. Methodist and the Baptist. He's

1031. available to all people. You just got to

1032. come into the city of refuge and trust

1033. that the blood of Jesus is enough to

1034. protect you from the wrath of a thrice

1035. holy God. What an image. What a picture.

1036. My city of refuge. Here's my question to

1037. you. Is he your city of refuge?

1038. Has there been a moment in your life

1039. where you have asked Jesus Christ to

1040. save you from your sin?

1041. If you don't have a moment in your mind

1042. where you have asked Jesus on purpose,

  1043. said God, I know I'm a sinner and I know

1044. because of my sin, I am doomed to face

1045. the wrath of God. And so I'm asking,

1046. would you please forgive me? Please save

  1047. me.

1048. If you've never done that, then this

1049. morning is a great morning for you to

1050. run into the arms of Jesus. And I

1051. promise it does not matter what you have

1052. done or where you have been. He will

1053. gladly receive you into himself. And he

1054. will be your city of refuge. And your

1055. eternal security will be a stamp in

1056. stone, never to be removed. And we will

1057. rejoice with you this morning over a new

1058. soul, a new name written down in the

  1059. lamb's book of life.

1060. For many of us, you probably do have a

1061. moment in your life. You remember the

1062. time where you asked Jesus to save you.

1063. You could tell me about it if I asked

1064. you. Say, "Yeah, in that moment, I ran

1065. into the city of refuge. I didn't know

1066. it was my city of refuge. I probably

1067. didn't know a whole lot of things, but I

1068. knew I needed Jesus to get to heaven."

1069. And so, I asked him to be my savior this

1070. morning. If that's where you are, you

  1071. say, "I know I'm saved. I'm 100% sure

  1072. I'm saved. I'm confident that if if I

1073. passed into eternity today, I know I

1074. would go to heaven because I am inside

1075. of the finished work of Christ." [music]

  1076. Hey, wonderful.

  1077. Wonderful.

1078. When's the last time you told Jesus,

1079. "Thank you for being my city of refuge.

1080. Thank you for giving up your life and

1081. paying my penalty with your own blood so

1082. that I could go free." We'll take just a

1083. few moments here this morning. Those of

1084. us who are saved, I'm going to invite

1085. you to just come and pray and say,

  1086. "Jesus, thank you.

1087. Thank you for the blood. Thank you for

1088. the sacrifice. Thank you that I can go

1089. free. And if you're not saved, while

1090. Christians are coming to pray, I'm going

1091. to ask you to come. And I'm going to

1092. make myself available this morning.

1093. Would you just come down here and wave

1094. at me or grab a hold of me and allow me

1095. to take a Bible and show you how you can

1096. be saved, how you can run into the city

1097. of refuge this morning. Would you stand

  1098. while she plays?

1099. Let's take a moment and respond to the

1100. beautiful picture of the word of
