  1. you Matthew 7 is our text this morning. Bear

  2. with me with my voice. I think it's just allergies.

  3. I know it's annoying to listen to, so I'll do

  4. the best I can. Matthew 7, we'll begin with verse

  5. 7 and end at verse 12. The word Jesus speaking

  6. says, Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek,

  7. and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened

  8. to you. For everyone who asks, receives. And

  9. he who seeks, finds. And to him who knocks, it

  10. will be opened. What man is there among you who,

  11. if his son asks for bread, will you give him

  12. a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will you give

  13. him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know

  14. how to give good gifts to your children, how

  15. much more will your Father who is in heaven give

  16. good things to those who ask him? Therefore,

  17. Whatever you want men to do to you, do also to

  18. them. For this is the law and the prophets. Let's

  19. pray. Our gracious God, this morning, Lord, we

  20. come and God, we have heard the word of the Lord,

  21. Lord, written and read. And God, now would you

  22. help us as it needs to be expounded and explained,

  23. Lord. Father, would you give the illumination

  24. of your Holy Spirit, Lord. Father, I realize,

  25. Lord, this morning my voice may be a distraction.

  26. God, would you help me? Lord, I pray that I would

  27. preach with power, not fleshly power, but, Lord

  28. God, the power of your spirit to unction, Lord,

  29. that, God, you would give us, Lord, your grace

  30. and your spirit. Lord, as we hear the word from

  31. heaven, Lord, God, may this word take root, change

  32. us, Lord, to be more like Christ because of what

  33. we're hearing. God, we need you, Lord. Help us

  34. to make much of Christ, even in our own weakness

  35. and frailty, Lord. Would you show forth your

  36. power? We pray this in Jesus' blessed name. Amen.

  37. We have spent some considerable time working

  38. our way through this masterpiece known as the

  39. Sermon on the Mount. Really, this sermon, it

  40. is the sermon. It is preached by the preacher.

  41. Nothing can even come close to rivaling it. If

  42. you talk about Matthew 5, 6, and 7, these chapters

  43. are so well known, not just within the church,

  44. but without the church as well. In fact, you'll

  45. find portions of them referenced or quoted. Politicians

  46. in various political speeches will use these

  47. verses. But if we're not careful, we can easily

  48. miss the big picture. What is the central point

  49. of Christ as he's preaching this message? Well,

  50. he's been talking about his kingdom. And he's

  51. detailing what life in his kingdom looks like.

  52. So the grand theme, if you will, the great subject

  53. of this entire sermon, Matthew 5 all the way

  54. through 7, really is the kingdom of God. Now

  55. the kingdom of God is also known as the kingdom

  56. of heaven. That's how Matthew references it.

  57. It's also referenced as the kingdom of Christ.

  58. All of those mean the exact same thing. Now there

  59. is some confusion. In fact, there's a lot of

  60. confusion on what the kingdom of God really is.

  61. And I think there's some good reason for that.

  62. When we speak of the kingdom of God, what we

  63. mean is the rule of God, the reign, R -E -I -G

  64. -N, the reign of God. So if I would ask you this

  65. morning, where is Christ currently reigning?

  66. Is he ruling over all the earth? Well, in one

  67. sense, the answer to that would be yes. I mean,

  68. there's no one or no thing outside of his jurisdiction.

  69. Christ is the sovereign one. But not all the

  70. nations, not all people, joyfully affirm his

  71. rule. So where is Christ then recognized as king?

  72. In his church. With the Christian. With joy,

  73. great joy I would say, and with great enthusiasm,

  74. we do cry out, Christ is Lord. Now when we're

  75. saying that, we're making some also denunciations.

  76. At the time of the writing of this, we would

  77. say Caesar is not Lord, although Rome was a political

  78. powerhouse. We would also say that no earthly

  79. king today is Lord. No president is Lord. In

  80. fact, Christ Jesus only is Lord. So when we're

  81. talking about the kingdom of God today, currently,

  82. we are talking really about his church. Christ

  83. rules over his people. He rules over them primarily

  84. in two ways. By his word and with the sacrament.

  85. And it is in his church that he is recognized

  86. as the great king. The word rules over us. It

  87. gives us our marching orders. The sacraments

  88. entrance into the community of God. And also

  89. it has fellowship with the risen Christ. If someone

  90. will not be obedient to the word. And they continue

  91. in their stubborn rebellion after being confronted.

  92. The church then brings discipline upon that person,

  93. excommunicates them from the table of the Lord.

  94. So he's ruling, he's ruling over his people.

  95. But that's not the only thing that's meant by

  96. the kingdom. When we speak of the kingdom of

  97. God, we're also referring to the final end time

  98. event when Christ returns and all creation will

  99. once again joyfully, readily affirm his lordship.

  100. One day all the nations will cry out, Christ

  101. is Lord. Now so currently we say the kingdom

  102. is here, but it's in seed form. But the kingdom

  103. has not yet fully come in fruition. That awaits

  104. a future date. So a lot of times in scripture

  105. you see a motif. Already, but not yet. And there's

  106. many ways that this is done. But here's one of

  107. the ways that this is done. The kingdom is already

  108. here. but not yet in its final form or in its

  109. completed form. Now, how can I prove that? When,

  110. Matt, in Luke chapter 11, Jesus said, but if

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  111. I cast out demons with the finger of God, with

  112. the power of God, surely, now notice his wording,

  113. the kingdom of God has come upon you. The kingdom's

  114. here, all right? But is that what Jesus means

  115. when he talks about the kingdom? Well, no, in

  116. a sense, it's not yet here in its final glorious

  117. form. Revelation 11. Then the seventh angel sounded.

  118. There were loud voices in heaven. Well, what

  119. were those voices saying? The kingdoms of this

  120. world have become the kingdom, singular, of our

  121. Lord and of his Christ. And he shall reign forever

  122. and ever. In this great sermon then, we're starting

  123. to see what life looks like, how the people of

  124. God, that is, That is, the people of the new

  125. covenant are to order their lives this side of

  126. heaven. The kingdom's here, folks. We're in the

  127. kingdom. It's just not yet arrived in its full,

  128. robust, glorious form. So if we're talking about

  129. the sermon, then this is how one is to live his

  130. life in the kingdom of God. Because it is here

  131. in the kingdom. Our king, Jesus Christ, he makes

  132. demands of his people. And these demands are

  133. inflexible. They don't change. They're not going

  134. to be softened. And he makes difficult demands.

  135. Let's just review some of them throughout the

  136. past few chapters. In Matthew 5, he said the

  137. believer is to be perfect. Verse 48, therefore

  138. you shall be perfect. How perfect are you talking

  139. about, Jesus? Just as your Father in heaven is

  140. perfect. Then in Matthew 6, we are to pray, we

  141. are to give, we are to fast, but secretly. Take

  142. heed that you do not do your charitable deeds

  143. before men. Take heed. Beware of that. So you

  144. don't want to be seen by them. Otherwise, you

  145. will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

  146. And by the way, as we're living on this side

  147. of earth, he says, yeah, lay up treasures. But

  148. don't do so on earth. Lay up treasures in heaven.

  149. Verse 20. Lay up for yourselves treasures in

  150. heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys,

  151. where thieves do not break in and steal. Don't

  152. live on this side of eternity. Then we are also

  153. to live quiet lives, trusting and depending upon

  154. our Heavenly Father. Verse 31. Therefore do not

  155. worry, saying, what shall we eat or what shall

  156. we drink or what shall we wear? Why not worry?

  157. Life sometimes can be one big worry. Why not?

  158. For after all these things, the Gentiles, these

  159. are the pagans, these are people that don't know

  160. God. They're all seeking those things. Every

  161. one of them. But you, you and the kingdom. For

  162. your heavenly father, he knows. He knows what

  163. you need. He knows what you have. He knows what

  164. you don't have. He knows that you need all these

  165. things. And then we turn over to chapter 7. You

  166. and I are to live in community with each other,

  167. with our brothers and sisters in this kingdom

  168. without being censorious, without being overly

  169. strict and overly critical. We looked at this

  170. last week, chapter 7, verse 1. Judge not, condemn

  171. not. Credo is the word. Condemn not so that you

  172. be not condemned. That means don't set yourself

  173. up to be morally superior, but consider carefully

  174. how you judge others. Why? Because on the day

  175. of judgment, friend, you're going to be judged

  176. by the very same standard. Don't do it. Now,

  177. after reading all these demands, Every one of

  178. us, just starting with the first one about being

  179. perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect. We

  180. ought to start to despair. There ought to be

  181. a sense of our conscience bothering us a little

  182. bit. Who does this? It's like Paul when he's

  183. talking about the care of all the churches and

  184. he says, I have so much on me. Who is sufficient

  185. for these things? I think that's how we should

  186. feel right now when we look at the demands of

  187. the kingdom and Christ is saying this is life

  188. in the kingdom. We ought to be saying, but who

  189. then is sufficient for these things? If this

  190. is kingdom life, how can I, how can you, how

  191. can we possibly endure? Who can do this? And

  192. this leads to our text today. See, what we do,

  193. we start to see our great need in being the disciples

  194. of Christ. And we do have great need. And we

  195. must have then great grace because there's not

  196. one of us here this morning that on our own can

  197. fulfill these demands. They're too lofty. They're

  198. too high. The awareness, this awareness that

  199. we have lack, that we have need, it drives us

  200. onto our needs where we ask for grace, we seek

  201. for wisdom, and we knock on the very doors of

  202. heaven for the resources that we need to accomplish

  203. his will. Friends, listen. There is a sense in

  204. which we would despair that Christ, our pastor,

  205. our shepherd, He comes to us and he says, don't

  206. despair. Why? Because you in the kingdom, you

  207. have a great high priest, the Lord Jesus, and

  208. he offers his help, offers his supernatural help

  209. to his people. Verse 7, ask. Just ask. It'll

  210. be given. Seek. And you will find, knock and

  211. it will be opened to you. For everyone, everyone

  212. who asks receives and he who seeks finds and

  213. him who knocks it's opened. That's a great promise.

  214. But let me tell you what it's not. This is not

  215. a blanket promise that the child of God is going

  216. to receive everything he asked God for. This

  217. is not the promise for selfish consumers. This

  218. is not for people who want to consume things

  219. upon their lusts. But there is a promise here

  220. and it's precious. There is a promise here for

  221. God's help and for God's empowerment to obey

  222. all that our Lord has commanded in these three

  223. lofty chapters. So it's an encouragement. How?

  224. You don't have what it takes, nor do I, but we

  225. go to God and the people of God. We go and we

  226. ask and we seek and we knock for what? Daily

  227. grace that is needed to be the disciple of Christ.

  228. I can't, but he can. We feel helpless. And we

  229. see our utter inability. And we cry out to the

  230. Lord for grace. We cry out to the Lord for mercy.

  231. We cry out to the Lord for his help. And this,

  232. in our admission of need and his promise to give

  233. it help, he's glorified that way. Because in

  234. the kingdom, the King, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  235. he is gracious. He is more than glad to offer

  236. his help to the subjects who are in his kingdom.

  237. Friends, you don't have a king that we ought

  238. to fear going to. He's gracious. Verse 7, this

  239. context, it is for disciples. And it's for disciples

  240. who know they need help. It's not for independent,

  241. self -sufficient people. It's for people who

  242. know they don't have what it takes. Andrew Farley,

  243. in his commentary, he says, Christ encourages

  244. them, that is us, his disciples, to boldly ask

  245. God for whatever they need. To seek from him

  246. whatever they require to knock on the door of

  247. heaven with their petitions. And if they do so,

  248. they will find their father in heaven hearkening

  249. to them. Amen. See, the verb tense, though, I

  250. know, grammar nerd here, this is in the progressive

  251. form. What does that mean? It means the disciples

  252. are to Christ are to continue asking, continue

  253. seeking, continue knocking. This is not a one

  254. and done deal, in other words. Keep on. Keep

  255. on what? Keep on asking the Lord. Keep on seeking

  256. the Lord. Keep on knocking on the door of heaven.

  257. Knowing, knowing, being assured, your Father

  258. in heaven will answer. Now, we have here other

  259. scriptures that will help us to understand there

  260. are certain conditions that our Father in heaven

  261. puts on prayer. Is he going to answer? Yeah.

  262. Well, Psalm 66 says, if I regard iniquity in

  263. my heart. Then the Lord will not hear me. 1 John

  264. 3. Whatever we ask, we receive from him. That's

  265. a strong statement. Because, he's explaining

  266. why. We keep his commandments and do those things

  267. that are pleasing in his sight. What is John

  268. saying? We don't perfectly keep them. If you

  269. are living, friends, in the kingdom, in rebellion

  270. to God, and there is no repentance in your life,

  271. you can claim Matthew 7, 7. You can claim 1 John

  272. 3, 22 all day long to know of El. The word will

  273. not hear. Moreover, the word searches our motives.

  274. James, speaking to us, he says, you ask. That's

  275. what we're told to do. But you don't receive.

  276. Why? I thought if we ask, we do receive. Because

  277. you ask amiss. You're asking wrongly. How? That

  278. you may spend it upon your lust, upon your desires.

  279. Lust doesn't mean sexual lust. It can mean that.

  280. But they're desires that are contrary to the

  281. will of God. So when he's saying, when we're

  282. asking and we're seeking, we're knocking, the

  283. petitions we ask of God must be according to

  284. his will. John tells us that again, 1 John 5.

  285. Now this is the confidence, okay, that's great,

  286. that we have in him that if we ask anything,

  287. now there's a clear caveat here, according to

  288. his will, he hears us. And if we know that he

  289. hears us, whatever we ask, because it's according

  290. to his will, then we know that we have the petitions

  291. that we have asked from him. Do you see how this

  292. is starting to come together and it paints a

  293. fuller picture for us? Far too many Christians

  294. have sought to take a biblical text like Matthew

  295. 7 -7 as a promise and divorce it from its context.

  296. People do it all the time. Right now, TV and

  297. internet preachers are replete with false teachers

  298. who are seeking to fleece the flock of God by

  299. twisting these sacred promises. They do it all

  300. day long every day. So the request that we're

  301. coming to God with, it must be according to his

  302. will. That's 1 John 5. Because he's not going

  303. to grant anything that would hurt us, because

  304. he's too wise. He's not going to grant anything

  305. that would hinder us from fellowshipping with

  306. him. But Jesus is talking to his disciples. He's

  307. nearing the end of the sermon, and he's telling

  308. them, you need to continue in prayer. You don't

  309. just come one time. Why does God do that? The

  310. Bible doesn't tell us. We have some clues. I

  311. think one of the things is to teach us perseverance.

  312. You are not to quit praying just because you

  313. don't receive the answer the very first time

  314. you ask. Persevere. If you know you're praying

  315. and your motives are pure and it's according

  316. to God's will and it's for his glory, keep on

  317. asking. Keep on seeking. Keep on knocking. God

  318. might delay in order to teach us to persevere.

  319. It's also the way we learn to walk in faith.

  320. Friends, not everything goes our way. And God

  321. in his providence ensures us at times, ensures

  322. that things don't go our way. Why? How else are

  323. you going to learn to walk by faith and not by

  324. sight? Keep on. Asking the Lord for something,

  325. that implies that I lack something. So in that,

  326. I am humbled and he's exalted. By seeking the

  327. Lord for something, that implies he has what

  328. I need. Again, there's lack on my part and provision

  329. on his part. I am humbled and he is exalted.

  330. By knocking on the door of heaven for something,

  331. there is the implication that he alone holds

  332. the door and he can open it as he wills. In this,

  333. I am humbled and he is exalted. Martin Lloyd

  334. -Jones says, the first two essentials to salvation,

  335. and we ought to listen to that, and to rejoicing

  336. in Christ, two essentials, the consciousness

  337. of our need. You've got to know that you're needy.

  338. And the consciousness of the riches of grace

  339. that are in Christ. You know that you have lack

  340. and he has provision. The command, this command

  341. to ask, to seek, to knock, it causes us immediately,

  342. because we're having to go to him, it causes

  343. us to see ourselves as weak. But it also, at

  344. the same time, causes us to see our king as sufficient.

  345. You and I know that we are needy, but we see

  346. that he is powerful and this God is glorified

  347. in. And in verse 8 he said, here's a confidence.

  348. Here's a confidence you have for everyone. Everyone

  349. who asks will receive and who seeks will find.

  350. And the one who knocks is going to be opened.

  351. Again, when we're praying in faith according

  352. to the will of God, God promises that you will

  353. receive the petition you desire of him. And in

  354. this persistence, in this perseverance, our character

  355. begins to be refined. It becomes honed. And our

  356. sense of dependency on him is strengthened. Our

  357. fellowship with him is strengthened. Because

  358. we are going to him daily for his rescuing grace.

  359. Again, I want to quote Lloyd -Jones here. If

  360. we really want to be men of God, he says, If

  361. we really want to know him and to walk with him

  362. and experience those boundless blessings which

  363. he has to offer, we must persist in asking him

  364. day by day. Now, it's interesting. Our Lord loves

  365. to do this. He loves to illustrate. He's a master

  366. teacher. So he's going to illustrate his willingness

  367. to answer our prayers by comparison. So there's

  368. a comparison here. Look at verses 9 through 11

  369. here. What man is there among you? If his son

  370. asks for bread, is he going to give him a stone?

  371. If he's asking for some fish, is he going to

  372. give him a snake? He said, if you then are evil

  373. and know how to give good gifts to your children,

  374. how much more your father in heaven, how much

  375. more will he give good gifts to his children?

  376. So now notice what he's doing. As Jesus commonly

  377. did, he was arguing from the lesser to the greater.

  378. You see that all the time, that how much more,

  379. he says. If earthly fathers who are sinful by

  380. nature, that is, we know that we are depraved.

  381. and you and I know how to give good gifts for

  382. our children, and we delight to do them as good

  383. dads, then what about the one who is truly good?

  384. The Father in heaven, don't you think he will

  385. know how to give good gifts, but even better?

  386. I mean, if you know how to do it, how much better

  387. will he do it? The scripture tells us that every

  388. good thing, every good gift you have ever received

  389. in your life, every good thing, Finds its source

  390. in a good God. James 1 .17 Every good gift and

  391. every perfect gift is from above. Now listen

  392. friends, that means anything, anything right

  393. today that is good in your life has come from

  394. him. Any blessing you've received, any kindness

  395. you've received, anything for which you give

  396. thanks has come from God. Every good and every

  397. perfect gift. And the problem that many of us

  398. have, including myself, Is that many times we

  399. don't know the heart of our father. This is something

  400. I'm continually learning. For years I lived.

  401. And I think this by natural default. We all become

  402. Pharisees. We know of grace. We talk of grace.

  403. We've even experienced grace. But we live lives

  404. on this metric of performance. I mean I know

  405. this. But I believe that if I obey God. God's

  406. going to be pleased. And that's true. We do please

  407. God by our behavior. To love him is to obey his

  408. commandments, he said. But I also believed that

  409. the moment that I stepped out of line, God was

  410. there in his judgment to strike me down. I mean,

  411. I didn't read it. It was just my natural default.

  412. And the good news is that God has already struck

  413. down his own son on the cross. So that I won't

  414. ever be struck down. He punished. He did. He

  415. didn't overlook my sin. He's never overlooked

  416. the times I've gone out of bounds or transgressed.

  417. We've just read about that in Isaiah 3. But he

  418. punished his innocent son, the Lord Jesus, so

  419. that he could become a father to his guilty son.

  420. That is me. Christian, I want you to know this.

  421. I would love for you to get this in your spiritual

  422. DNA. God has loved his people. That means he

  423. has loved you from all eternity. He never started

  424. loving you. He has loved you from eternity. He

  425. did not begin to love you when you were saved.

  426. That's false. You were saved because he did love

  427. you. It was because God so loved you, God so

  428. loved the world, that he gave his only begotten

  429. son. It's because he did love his people that

  430. he sent his son into the world to save his people.

  431. See, our father is rich. He's rich in what? In

  432. mercy. It's a well that never runs dry. You will

  433. never out need God. Meaning whatever need you

  434. have, he has more than enough mercy for it. He's

  435. rich in grace. He's not there to strike you down.

  436. He's rich in grace. And he delights because he

  437. is a father who knows how to give good gifts

  438. to his children to shower you with both his mercy

  439. and his grace. As Psalm 23, as David ended that.

  440. Do you remember how the Psalm 23 ends? Surely

  441. goodness and mercy. shall follow me all the days

  442. of my life. Why? Because God is a good God and

  443. his son has paid for my sin debt. Surely goodness

  444. and mercy. They're following me down and by that

  445. word in Psalm 23, the idea is like they're running

  446. a race and they're going to overtake you. God's

  447. goodness and mercy will hunt you down and overtake

  448. you. It's going to follow me all the days of

  449. my life. But look at verse 9. So what man, he

  450. says, if his son asks for bread, is he going

  451. to give him a stone? Now that seems like a weird

  452. thing to say, but there was a common bread in

  453. that day that was a round bread, a round loaf,

  454. and it very much resembled a stone. He said,

  455. would any good father give to his son, who comes

  456. to him hungry and is asking for bread, give him

  457. that stone that looked like bread in order to

  458. possibly hurt him or to trick him? No. No, no

  459. one would do that. Look at verse 10. What about

  460. if he asks for a fish? Is he going to give him

  461. a serpent? Now here he's arguing from the absurd.

  462. The idea is absurd. He's hungry and he's asking

  463. for food. You're going to give him a poisonous

  464. snake? No. The idea is ludicrous and that's the

  465. whole point. J .C. Ryle, he says, evil and selfish

  466. as they are by nature, that is you and I, they

  467. do not neglect the needs of their children. Much

  468. more will God of love and mercy attend to the

  469. cries of those who are his children by grace.

  470. The best father on his best day is still beset

  471. by sin. But even though he's beset by sin, he

  472. still knows how to give good gifts to his children.

  473. How much more will God, who is absolutely righteous

  474. and good and knows no sin? Verse 11. If you then,

  475. being evil, know how to give good gifts, surely

  476. how much more will your father give good things?

  477. Now notice, this is, I love this. Now notice

  478. verse 11, if you would. Everyone look at your

  479. Bible. Notice how Jesus makes a distinction between

  480. himself and others. He said, if you then being

  481. evil, notice what he did not say. If we being

  482. evil know how to give gifts, how much more our

  483. father? No, he made a distinction. He's not included

  484. in the evil part. He's the sinless one. But he

  485. does say you, and he's talking to everyone there

  486. that day, followers of his, if you being evil,

  487. that is what? Sinful. That is depraved by nature.

  488. Sons of Adam. And you know how to do it. How

  489. much more? How much more will the Father who

  490. is in heaven give good things to those who what?

  491. Asking. I wonder, what are the good things the

  492. Father is willing to give? What's the context?

  493. Matthew 5, 6, and 7. The grace and the power

  494. in order to be obedient to the commands of Christ.

  495. Here's the thing. Whatever you need to live a

  496. godly life before God is what he's willing to

  497. give to you. Whatever you need. Luke 12, 32.

  498. Jesus saying, do not fear, little flock, for

  499. it is your father's good pleasure to give you

  500. the kingdom. Now, let me just argue here for

  501. a moment. Just listen to logic. If God is more

  502. than willing to give the kingdom, is he not willing

  503. to give us all that we need to live in that kingdom?

  504. That's what he's saying. Romans 8 .32. He that

  505. spared not. He did not spare his own son. He

  506. gave the best, the unspeakable gift. Then he

  507. delivered him up for us all. He had him crucified.

  508. Now notice here. How shall he not then? With

  509. him, the one that was not spared, freely give

  510. us all things. Wonderful truth here. What Paul

  511. is saying, what Jesus is saying in Luke, what

  512. Jesus is saying in Matthew, if we ask, if we

  513. seek, and if we knock for anything that is going

  514. to be pleasing to our Father in heaven, it's

  515. going to bring us nearer to him, or it's needed

  516. for our ultimate perfection, then he will give

  517. it to you. He withholds no good thing. If you

  518. really want those things, if you're really going

  519. to seek those things, then you've got to ask

  520. for them. Seek for them. Knock for them. And

  521. you will find them in your possession. Because

  522. he's good. And he's merciful. Now then, we receive

  523. so much from our gracious Father. We receive

  524. so much from them that it changes us. You spend

  525. time with God. You know what spending time with

  526. God does? It makes you more like God. Having

  527. received all this daily grace and this mercy

  528. from God, we now then are going to be changed.

  529. How should we relate to other people? Verse 12.

  530. Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you,

  531. do also to them. For this is the law and the

  532. prophets. Now you and I know this is what the

  533. golden rule. So our Lord is simplifying life

  534. in his kingdom. The way you would like to be

  535. treated, that's the way you need to treat other

  536. people. Verse 12 is a summary of everything he

  537. said in Matthew 5, 6, and 7. Do unto others as

  538. you would have them do unto you. Now, he's not

  539. going to give a bunch of rules. He doesn't give

  540. a bunch of regulations because all that can lead

  541. to disputes. You find people fighting all the

  542. times over religious interpretation. Instead,

  543. Jesus gives his people, there's one maxim to

  544. live by. Just one. What is it? One maxim. This

  545. is life in the kingdom. You treat everyone else

  546. the way that you would want them to treat you.

  547. That's it. And again, I like J .C. Ryle. I think

  548. he has a great commentary. You and I are not

  549. to deal with others as others deal with us. It

  550. doesn't matter what they do. That's selfishness.

  551. That's heathenism. That's for people who don't

  552. know God. You and I are to deal with others as

  553. we would like them to deal with us. This, friends,

  554. is real Christianity. Think about it. If you

  555. put this rule into practice, it would solve all

  556. relationship problems. And I wrote that down

  557. and I thought about it. I'm like, all relationship

  558. problems? All of them. Think of one relationship

  559. problem where this doesn't solve it. Treat others

  560. the way you'd want them to treat you. It's the

  561. law of love. That's what it's called, the law

  562. of love. We also know it as the royal law. Jesus

  563. said it is the law and the prophets. So how is

  564. it the law and the prophets? Think of the law.

  565. Think of the Decalogue. Think of the Ten Commandments.

  566. Let's just pick one. You don't want people to

  567. lie to you. He said, well, then don't lie to

  568. other people. Stealing. You don't want people

  569. stealing from you. Well, then don't steal from

  570. anyone else. You don't want someone committing

  571. adultery with your spouse. Then you don't commit

  572. adultery with their spouse. Hey, I want people

  573. to be kind and show respect to me. Well, then

  574. you be kind and show respect to them. Hey, when

  575. I wrong someone, I want them to forgive me. Well,

  576. then you also offer forgiveness when someone

  577. wrongs you. He said, that's the law and the prophets.

  578. It sums it up. Everything the law forbid is found

  579. in that one verse. Now, why is he saying this

  580. is the law and the prophets? Because I believe

  581. he had his eyes that day fixed on the scribes

  582. and Pharisees who were experts where? In the

  583. law and the prophets. See, they knew the law.

  584. They made their boast in the law. And yet they

  585. were what Jesus said, judgmental hypocrites,

  586. far from God. They failed to discern the most

  587. important thing. extraordinarily religious and

  588. extraordinarily far from God. But there's a problem

  589. here. You and I cannot consistently sustain this

  590. type of living in our own strength. I can't do

  591. it. Which is why we must ask and seek and knock

  592. to be able to fill this royal wall. There's a

  593. parallel passage in Luke, and I think it's so

  594. helpful here. I love this parallel passage. Luke

  595. 11, 13, notice the difference here. Jesus speaking,

  596. still Sermon on the Mount, that's Luke. If you

  597. then, being evil, know how to give good gifts

  598. to your children, how much more would your Heavenly

  599. Father give? Now notice, Matthew says good gifts.

  600. Luke 11 says give the Holy Spirit to those who

  601. ask him. I love this. God is going to give the

  602. empowerment of the Spirit to those who come to

  603. him asking, seeking, knocking. You and I, we

  604. need so much, right? We need the wisdom of God.

  605. We need the power of God. We need the love of

  606. God to fill us. In other words, it's not what

  607. we need, it's who we need. And who we need is

  608. the Holy Spirit of God. What the child of God

  609. needs to live in the kingdom of God is God. What

  610. the child of God needs to live life in this kingdom

  611. of God is God. We need the Holy Spirit. And Jesus

  612. said, how much more your father's one to give

  613. him? You're saying, well, I thought we got him

  614. at salvation. His feeling more of him. You want

  615. more of God? Then ask for more of God. Seek more

  616. of God. Knock for more of God. And you will have

  617. more of God. But where does this all begin? It

  618. begins with a relationship with God. See, let

  619. me just say this. You cannot ever be loving enough.

  620. You cannot be forgiving enough. You cannot be

  621. merciful enough. to earn your way into the kingdom

  622. of God. That is a fool's errand. It will never

  623. happen. Remember what Jesus said in Luke 11.

  624. Do not fear, little flock, for it is your father's

  625. good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Notice

  626. that. The father gives the kingdom. Entrance

  627. into the kingdom is a gift. It is not earned.

  628. It is to be received by faith. He graciously

  629. gives the kingdom to those who will bow the knee,

  630. trusting in his son. Who? If you're willing to

  631. bow the knee and trust in Christ, it's a work

  632. of God. Salvation is a gift of grace, and it

  633. is a grace, and it's received by faith, by believing

  634. and trusting in the promise of God, and it saves

  635. the one who believes in Jesus. That's Paul in

  636. Romans 3. So what? So what's this mean? Today,

  637. this is the word of God. It says salvation is

  638. here. The day of salvation is here. That means

  639. the door of salvation is wide open. God has withheld

  640. his judgment. Judgment has not fallen yet. The

  641. day of salvation is here. And God does offer

  642. the kingdom. He does. It's a legitimate offer

  643. to anyone who will understand his need and come

  644. to his son in faith. If he comes to his son asking,

  645. seeking, and knocking. He receives and he finds

  646. and the doors opened. If you have received the

  647. gift of eternal life, if God has awakened you

  648. by his grace and shown you Christ, he calls you,

  649. his people, to a higher plane. That's what this

  650. whole sermon's about. Everything's about it.

  651. Loving others and doing unto them what we would

  652. have them doing to us is what the kingdom of

  653. God is. Looks like. It's not the way into the

  654. kingdom. That's all of grace. And it's all of

  655. grace by the way. Even afterwards. But it is

  656. the ethic. The way. Of the kingdom. And this

  657. is what Jesus is going to say. And next week

  658. we're going to see. That not everyone who hears

  659. this understands it. In fact he says if you don't

  660. press your way into it. Because there's a wide

  661. door. That will lead to judgment. Friends this

  662. is. The gracious words of our God. We're hearing

  663. from our king today that this is his kingdom.

  664. But to you, to the people of God assembled, don't

  665. you want to commune with him? Don't you desire

  666. to fellowship with him? Well, he's also made

  667. provision for that. It's the table of the Lord

  668. where he offers himself. We eat his body. We

  669. drink his blood, the Bible says. Not corporally.

  670. We know where that's not turning into flesh and

  671. blood. But there is a mystical union there. There's

  672. a spiritual union that takes place. And we are

  673. invited into the fellowship of the Lord to commune

  674. with him by God's grace. He gives us himself

  675. today. And this is what is so glorious about

  676. the worship of our God and King. Our God does

  677. it all. And we here who have received it, come,

  678. come weak, come beggarly, come needy, ask, seek,

  679. knock. And he's there. And today, if you don't

  680. know Christ, I do stand and say this by the authority

  681. of the word of God. Jesus said, all who are weary

  682. and are heavy laden, come to me. Come to me.

  683. He said, you'll find rest into your soul. So

  684. I say today, if the Lord has opened your eyes

  685. to your sin and show you your need, confess Christ.

  686. Confess him as Lord and King. And then I'd love

  687. to talk to you afterwards about what that means.

  688. Let's pray. Father, we trust you this morning,

  689. Lord. God, you have been so gracious. Lord, your

  690. word is rich. Lord, we do eat it. Lord, it's

  691. nourishment. It nourishes our soul. God, it brings

  692. peace. It brings conviction. Lord, as we have

  693. heard the word, Lord, we want to expose our lives

  694. to its judgment upon us, Lord, for we will be

  695. judged by the Lord.
