  1. The choir comes down and Junior Church is dismissed.

  2. If you have your Bibles, if you would join me

  3. in opening the Gospel of Matthew, as we make

  4. our way through this study of this precious Gospel.

  5. We'll hold as our text this morning, verses 10

  6. down through verse 20. When he, that is Jesus,

  7. called the multitude to himself, he said to them,

  8. Hear and understand. Pay attention, guys, is

  9. what he's saying there. Now what goes into the

  10. mouth, it's not what goes into the mouth that

  11. defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth,

  12. this defiles a man. Then his disciples came and

  13. said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees were

  14. offended when they heard this saying? But he

  15. answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly

  16. Father has not planted, Will be uprooted. It's

  17. going to be pulled up. Leave them alone. They

  18. are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind

  19. leads the blind. Both will fall into a ditch.

  20. Then Peter answered and said to him. Explain

  21. this parable to us. Explain what you just said.

  22. So Jesus said. Are you also still without understanding?

  23. Do you not yet understand that whatever enters

  24. the mouth. goes into the stomach and is eliminated.

  25. But those things which proceed out of the mouth,

  26. they come from the heart, and they defile man.

  27. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders,

  28. adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness,

  29. blasphemies. These are the things which defile

  30. man. But to eat with unwashed hands, does not

  31. defile man. This is the word of God this morning.

  32. Would you join me as we ask God's help and understanding?

  33. Father, we thank you for your precious word.

  34. God, we ask for the spirit of God to illumine

  35. the text to us, Lord. Feed us from manna on high.

  36. Feed us with Christ, Lord. God, this is your

  37. word. It is rich. It is profitable. Lord, I pray

  38. that, Lord, you would make it effective in the

  39. lives of your people this morning by means of

  40. your spirit. Lord, help me to be a vessel that

  41. will be used for your glory and honor. Lord,

  42. I pray that you would set a guard over my mouth

  43. this morning, Lord. I am prone, Lord, to speak

  44. too many words. God, would you help me, Lord,

  45. not to speak one word more than is needed and

  46. to keep me back from speaking one word that might

  47. be unprofitable. God, would you help me in this,

  48. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Now, if we're going

  49. to understand this passage this morning, you

  50. have to understand the immediate context. which

  51. really is verses 1 through 9, which is what we

  52. looked at last week. But even if you weren't

  53. here, we can still understand the text. See,

  54. at this point in his ministry, the Lord Jesus

  55. is wildly popular. And his popularity has grown

  56. because he's done these mighty acts. He's healing

  57. the sick. On occasion, he's raised the dead.

  58. On two occasions, he's fed a hungry multitude.

  59. So if you have anyone sick in your family, let's

  60. get them to Jesus. And so he's really, his fame

  61. has taken off at this point. And it's spread

  62. everywhere, even down to Jerusalem, to the capital

  63. city. But not only has word of his miracles,

  64. but word of his teaching has spread. His miracles

  65. gave credibility to what he taught. But there

  66. was something different about Jesus. He was popular,

  67. but he was different. He was different in that

  68. he would not toe the party line. He refused to

  69. follow the scribes and Pharisees' devotion to

  70. ancient tradition. All the leaders at that time,

  71. they followed tradition. The Mishnah, the oral

  72. tradition of the law. But Jesus didn't. He refused

  73. to do so. So therefore, we find in verses 1 through

  74. 9, particularly verse 2, a group of scribes and

  75. Pharisees had been sent to Galilee in the north,

  76. and they're going to challenge Jesus on this

  77. particular point. They wanted to know. Why don't

  78. your disciples follow tradition of the elders?

  79. It's ancient. And we see that in verse 2. Why

  80. do your disciples transgress the tradition of

  81. the elders? How are they doing that? Well, on

  82. this occasion, because they don't wash their

  83. hands before they eat bread. Now, this concern,

  84. we said last week, has nothing to do with hygiene.

  85. It has everything to do with ritual purity in

  86. the law of Moses. The scribes and Pharisees,

  87. they both believed that if you ate without first

  88. ceremonially washing your hands, then that defiled

  89. you. You become unclean. Ritual defilement in

  90. the eyes of the law. But there's one problem.

  91. That belief was not based on God's word. Rather,

  92. it was based on a tradition that had developed

  93. through the ages. And the Pharisees' eyes, in

  94. particular, if you broke with tradition, in their

  95. eyes, That was tantamount to breaking God's law.

  96. That's where the rub really came in. But Jesus

  97. said, not only is that untrue, he called it hypocrisy.

  98. The Pharisees he called a group of hypocrites,

  99. and we saw that last week. The Pharisees were

  100. fastidious in the way they sought to obey tradition.

  101. They dotted their I's and crossed their T's.

  102. But Jesus said, you can be as fastidious as you

  103. want. You can be as zealous as you want. But

  104. all of that is in vain. It's all for nothing.

  105. These were man -made, self -imposed regulations,

  106. and they were of no value at all in God's eyes.

  107. See, the truth is the Pharisees were concerned

  108. about hands, and Jesus was concerned about the

  109. heart. And that's what we find here this morning.

  110. Now, the Lord had been in large clouds. They

  111. were standing there. And the crowds saw that

  112. interaction between him and the Pharisees, and

  113. he did not want the crowds to be influenced by

  114. the Pharisees' teachings, so he called them over

  115. to himself, and he's going to instruct them.

  116. And by the way, the scribes and Pharisees, the

  117. religious officials, they're standing right there.

  118. Verse 10. So when he called the multitude to

  119. himself, he said to them, Listen up, guys. I

  120. want you to hear something. Understand. It is

  121. not what goes into your mouth that defiles you,

  122. but what comes out of your mouth. That's what

  123. defiles you. So you see, Christ is a good shepherd.

  124. He's warning and protecting the people about

  125. false teaching. But what was so insidious and

  126. dangerous was this false teaching came from official

  127. religious teachers, scribes and Pharisees. Their

  128. teaching's not neutral. It was harmful. It was

  129. false. And verse 11 is the key to this whole

  130. passage. He said, it's not what goes into your

  131. mouth that defiles you. It's rather what comes

  132. out that is defiling. Now, to say that nothing

  133. that goes into the mouth, that nothing that you

  134. eat would be defiling, would have been a radical

  135. and a revolutionary statement for the Jewish

  136. people to hear at that time. What do you mean

  137. nothing we eat is defiling? And Jesus said, no,

  138. it's not what goes in, but what comes out. That's

  139. what's important. Well, if that be the case,

  140. why then were all those dietary laws and restrictions

  141. in place? Why did they have the kosher laws?

  142. If food is not defiling, how is one defiled?

  143. Now, friends, how you answer that today is very

  144. important. Where do you see the source of the

  145. problem? See, the Pharisees saw defilement coming

  146. from the outside in. They believed that you became

  147. unclean when you had contact with the wrong people,

  148. Gentiles, wrong food, non -kosher, wrong places.

  149. Then you were defiled. So when you had contact

  150. with something unclean, then you became unclean.

  151. And Jesus Christ, the Son of God, disagreed.

  152. And he said, no, true defilement originates from

  153. within. It starts in your heart. Your heart,

  154. and in this case the inner man, the operating

  155. system, it is already defiled, by the way, which

  156. is what leads to corrupt thoughts, which leads

  157. to corrupt words, which leads to corrupt actions.

  158. See, your problem is not outside of you. Your

  159. most serious problem lies inside. But the Pharisees,

  160. they saw the problem as everything around them.

  161. And that blinded them to the true problem that

  162. was within them. So again, think how they thought.

  163. You're clean until you touch something unclean.

  164. And particularly in this case, let's say your

  165. hands are now defiled, which then touches your

  166. food. Then you, with your hands, put the food

  167. in your mouth. The food goes down in, and then

  168. you become defiled all over. That's what they

  169. believed. But Jesus... flatly and strongly contradict

  170. their teaching. He says, you have it backwards.

  171. Completely backwards. And by the way, the law

  172. of God, the Torah, that which God gave to Moses,

  173. agreed with Jesus. Remember, Pharisees' teaching

  174. is based on tradition. Jesus is following the

  175. law of God. How do we know that? Jeremiah 17

  176. .9. Jeremiah writing, he said, the heart is deceitful

  177. above all things and desperately wicked. Who

  178. can know it? In Proverbs 4, the author says,

  179. keep your heart with all diligence. Why? Why

  180. be so concerned about the heart? And we're not

  181. talking about the physical organ pumping blood,

  182. obviously. He said because it's out of the heart

  183. springs the issues of life. Your heart is the

  184. operating system of your life. If it's defiled,

  185. your life is defiled. And that's what the Pharisees

  186. couldn't see. See, if the problem is just outside

  187. of us, then all we need to really do is obey

  188. rules. Keep away from the contaminant. In this

  189. case, food. So you have a bunch of rules. Don't

  190. touch that. Don't taste that. Don't do that.

  191. Then you're holy. But if the problem is inside

  192. of you, well, you have a much bigger problem.

  193. If the heart is the problem, well, what's the

  194. solution? It can't be rules. You need a new heart.

  195. Not do you just need a new heart. You need a

  196. new birth. And that's what Jesus told Nicodemus

  197. in John chapter 3. Now keep in mind, who is Nicodemus?

    John 3 chapter mention

  198. A leading Pharisee. Let's look at that conversation

  199. in John 3. There was a man of the Pharisees named

  200. Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This is an important

  201. figure, by the way. This is not some come -by

  202. -night guy. This man, I say it's not some come

  203. -by -night guy, and look at verse 2. This came

  204. to Jesus by night, but you understand what I

  205. meant. And he said to him, Rabbi, teacher. We

  206. know that you're a teacher come from God. You

  207. have to be because look at all the works. No

  208. one can do these signs that you do unless God

  209. is with them. So Nicodemus is an honorable guy.

  210. He's a pious guy. He's like, there's no way you

  211. can be false. Look at all these miracles. Jesus

  212. is not impressed by flattery. Jesus answered

  213. and said to him, most assuredly I say to you,

  214. unless one is born again, born from above, he

  215. cannot see the kingdom of God. Flatly. You don't

  216. see it. Nicodemus said to him, well, he's thinking

  217. very concretely. How can a man be born when he's

  218. old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's

  219. womb and be born? It's a ridiculous statement.

  220. Of course not. No. Jesus said, he didn't clarify

  221. though, did he? Most assuredly, I say to you,

  222. unless one is born of water and the spirit, he

  223. cannot enter the kingdom of God. What's the point?

  224. Man's inner corruption, mankind's inner corruption,

  225. it's so pervasive, so all -encompassing, that

  226. he must have a new birth if he's going to enter

  227. into God's kingdom. He needs the Spirit of God

  228. to give him a new heart. We need new operating

  229. centers. Now, I think, keep in mind, to whom

  230. is the Lord speaking? To Nicodemus. The leading,

  231. a leading religious figure, a leading Pharisee,

  232. a teacher of people. This man's life, Nicodemus

  233. would have lived an exemplary life. He was righteous.

  234. He was God -fearing. He looked pious. And Jesus

  235. told him, even you need to be born again. This

  236. has implications for us. And let me just talk

  237. to parents for a moment. This has implications

  238. for the way we parent as well. If you have a

  239. wrong view of man's ultimate problem, you will

  240. give your kids the wrong solution. If you believe

  241. the primary problem is outside us, it's just

  242. the world and evil people. And by the way, the

  243. world is evil and people are evil. But if that's

  244. the primary problem, then you're going to shelter

  245. your kids, you're going to protect them. How?

  246. With rules. And you'll neglect where the real

  247. problem lies in your child's heart. The problem's

  248. not the enemy without, it's the enemy within.

  249. And sadly, sadly, sadly, many parents have done

  250. this. They have reared their children to be good,

  251. moral people and not Christians. And you see

  252. it. How? Because they focus more on behavior

  253. than heart. Too many parents, in the name of

  254. Jesus, are only concerned with how their children

  255. look and behave. As long as their children grow

  256. up to be honest, financially independent and

  257. hardworking, well, then that's all that parent

  258. can ask for, right? Then all must be well. But

  259. Christianity is not and has never been about

  260. looking good. It's about loving God. You can

  261. be hardworking, honest, industrious, and not

  262. love God at all. Many people, many children have

  263. been reared in Christian homes, and they've grown

  264. up to lead clean, moral lives that are indifferent

  265. to God. and that is not Christianity. See, genuine

  266. Christianity is a work that is done in the inner

  267. man, which can only be accomplished by the Holy

  268. Spirit of God. You and I can't do it. And it's

  269. easy to parent like a Pharisee. And we all find

  270. ourselves falling into that trap. My wife and

  271. I can fall into that trap. And how do you do

  272. that? When you merely focus on behavior, but

  273. you ignore the heart that lies behind the behavior.

  274. You just want them to... Toe the line, if you

  275. will. And so many of us will assume if they're

  276. respectful and mannerly, well then our job as

  277. a parent is done. Friends, that's moralism. And

  278. that will damn your child. I'm not saying, hear

  279. me correctly, I'm not saying behavior doesn't

  280. matter. Of course it does. I'm not saying there

  281. aren't ever any rules. Of course there must be.

  282. But behavior that does not come from a heart

  283. that has been changed by God and loves God is

  284. not pleasing to God. If your heart, or what you

  285. do, doesn't flow from a heart that has been changed

  286. that loves God, it's not pleasing to Him. See,

  287. what Jesus said was at odds with the religious

  288. figures of His day, but I fear many times it's

  289. at odds with the religious figures of our day.

  290. Verse 12. His disciples came and said, Hey, What

  291. you just said, do you know it was offensive to

  292. the Pharisees? They heard you. Now, why would

  293. they say this? Because Jesus' disciples were

  294. like the rest of Israel. They held the Pharisees

  295. in high regard because they were deeply respected

  296. in society. They would have been the upper crust.

  297. They would have been the people everyone looked

  298. up to. So they were thinking, Jesus, you need

  299. to be careful. You're making some powerful enemies

  300. and you're offending them. By the way, you could

  301. get in some hot water, Jesus. Wouldn't it be

  302. better if you acted in a more conciliatory manner?

  303. Be a little more cordial, you know? Of course,

  304. Jesus was offending them. He knew he was offending

  305. them. He contradicted their view of holiness,

  306. and he refused, flat out refused, to follow their

  307. traditions. So how did he respond to their concern?

  308. Was he like, oh, okay, yeah, I better soften

  309. the language. Verse 13. He said, Every plant

  310. that my Heavenly Father has not planted will

  311. be uprooted, and just leave them alone. Leave

  312. the Pharisees alone. They are blind leaders of

  313. blind people. Earlier he called them hypocrites.

  314. If the blind leads the blind, both are going

  315. to fall into a ditch. Every plant which the Heavenly

  316. Father did not plant will be uprooted. Jesus

  317. was not at all concerned that these men were

  318. offended. In fact, he doubled down, and here's

  319. what he said. He said, they don't belong to God.

  320. These were the official teachers of Israel, but

  321. they were not of God. And since they did not

  322. belong to God, he said, they will be eventually

  323. uprooted. That means this is the language of

  324. judgment. They're going to be judged one day.

  325. They're going to be judged by God Almighty for

  326. how they misled his people. What God does not

  327. plant will not survive. They will be plucked

  328. up as if they are a weed. That's what he's saying

  329. here. And in verse 14, he says, leave them alone.

  330. Yes, others in society may regard them as eminent

  331. teachers of the law. But don't you. Because they're

  332. not. Instead, he said, the Pharisees, the people

  333. you're talking about, they are blind. And this

  334. is the irony here. The Pharisees were experts

  335. at discerning clean from unclean, but they could

  336. not even discern their own lack of sight. They

  337. were blind, but they didn't know it. They believed

  338. it was their job as Pharisees to guide Israel

  339. into truth. And Jesus said, leave them alone.

  340. They're blind guides leading blind people, and

  341. both of them are going to fall straight into

  342. a ditch. If you follow them and their ways, it

  343. ends in destruction. And we see that over in

  344. Matthew 23, verse 15. Woe to you, scribes and

    Matthew 23:15

  345. Pharisees, you hypocrites. For you travel land

  346. and sea to win one proselyte. And when he has

  347. won, you make him twice as much a son of hell

  348. as yourselves. These men diligently studied the

  349. law of God, but they failed to understand it.

  350. Why? They were blinded by their own tradition.

  351. Now, verse 15, Peter then speaks, as normally

  352. he's the spokesman for the group, and he said,

  353. explain what you mean to us, Jesus. So now it

  354. appears that the crowd is no longer with Jesus.

  355. It looks like you have the 12 there, all right?

  356. Peter, the spokesman of the 12, he's asking Jesus,

  357. explain what you just said. What do you mean

  358. they are uprooted plants and blind guides? How

  359. are the Pharisees blind guides? I mean, they're

  360. the most devout, serious students of the law.

  361. Verse 16. Jesus said, and do you still not understand?

  362. Do you still not get it? The language here is

  363. actually a little bit like Jesus seemed surprised,

  364. almost shocked. Really, Peter? You don't get

  365. what I'm saying? And Peter didn't quite understand

  366. yet. How were the Pharisees wrong? Why wouldn't

  367. you wash your hands before you eat? But understand

  368. this, what Jesus was teaching was radical at

  369. that time. Dietary laws had always, and I mean

  370. always, been an important part of their daily

  371. life. You go back to the Torah, go back to the

  372. law, Leviticus 11, Deuteronomy 14, they find

  373. a list of animals prescribed that differentiated

  374. between clean you could eat and unclean you couldn't.

  375. So dietary laws, kosher laws, were part and parcel

  376. of being a Jew. It's a part of your identity.

  377. This is why Peter was, he's like, what do you

  378. mean? Now, Jesus wasn't contradicting the law.

  379. Remember, the Pharisees said you had to wash,

  380. ceremony, wash your hands before you ate. The

  381. law never said that. But we come to Acts chapter

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  382. 10. This is after Christ has risen from the dead,

  383. sent out his church. Peter is still not quite

  384. sure what all this means. In fact, when the Gentiles

  385. are going to be brought into salvation, Peter

  386. sees a vision in Acts 10, and it concerns these

  387. dietary laws. The next day, as they went on their

  388. journey, they drew near the city. Peter went

  389. up on the housetop to pray about the six hours,

  390. noon, hot part of the day. He became very hungry.

  391. He wanted to eat. It's lunchtime. But while they

  392. made ready, he fell into a trance. He starts

  393. to see a vision. And he saw heaven opened and

  394. an object like a great sheet bound at the four

  395. corners descending to him let down to the earth.

  396. What was in that sheet? In it were all kinds

  397. of four -footed animals of the earth. wild beasts,

  398. creeping things, birds of the air. And a voice

  399. from heaven says, Rise, Peter. Kill them and

  400. eat them. Peter said, No, not so, Lord. I have

  401. never eaten anything common or unclean. Peter's

  402. a good Jew. He's keeping kosher. Leviticus 11,

  403. Deuteronomy 14. And a voice spoke to him again

  404. a second time. Peter, what God has cleansed you

  405. must not call common. What God calls clean, no

  406. longer call unclean. What God is cleaning, Now

  407. he's referring to Gentile people. Don't call

  408. common. Don't call unclean. They're coming in.

  409. Now this was done three times, and then the object

  410. was taken back up into heaven. Peter's there

  411. on the rooftop, very hungry, and he says he wondered

  412. within himself what this vision meant. He had

  413. to think, I'm hearing God's voice wrong. This

  414. vision can't be of God. Are you telling me Leviticus

  415. 11, Deuteronomy 14 are no longer binding? Is

  416. that what you're saying? Get this, church. In

  417. Christ, the dietary restrictions were fulfilled.

  418. They are no longer binding, but they could not

  419. understand that at the time. Understand the issue.

  420. Even when God gave Leviticus 11, Deuteronomy

  421. 14, when God gave those dietary laws, it was

  422. never about food. Those laws were given to show

  423. Israel they had been set apart. That's God's

  424. holy people. They were clean. So the laws between

  425. clean and unclean were given to point to the

  426. need of cleansing. They were given to show something.

  427. They were shown a distinction here. But now,

  428. in Christ, these restrictions were fulfilled

  429. how? By Jesus' life, death, and resurrection,

  430. because that's what achieved the ultimate cleansing

  431. and purity. which is what the food law symbolized.

  432. They've never made you clean, folks, ever, never,

  433. never, never. They're pointing to something greater.

  434. The greater came. The lesser is no longer needed.

  435. In Jesus, we are clean. We are made pure. But

  436. at this time, the disciples still don't get it.

  437. They're still dull, and we understand that. So

  438. Jesus had to explain what he meant. Look at verse

  439. 17. Don't you get it, guys? Don't you yet understand?

  440. Whatever you eat, it just goes in the stomach,

  441. it's digested, it's eliminated. It can't defile

  442. you. Food cannot defile you because why? It can't

  443. touch your heart. It doesn't go into the deepest

  444. recesses of your soul. On the contrary, what

  445. you eat goes into the stomach and begins to be

  446. digested. So your body is going to extract the

  447. minerals and nutrients that it can, and then

  448. everything else, all the waste product is going

  449. to be excreted, and nothing that is defiling

  450. remains in the body. That's digestion. Okay.

  451. But, on the other hand, verse 18. But the things

  452. which come out of the mouth, they come from the

  453. heart. And they do defile man. What comes out

  454. is what defiles. That is a Copernican revolution

  455. in Jewish thinking. What are you saying, Jesus?

  456. It is not unclean people. It is not unclean places,

  457. nor is it unclean food that defile you. Your

  458. unclean hearts make you unacceptable to God.

  459. This is the way it's always been. True defilement

  460. does not come from outside. It originates within

  461. us. So you say, what is wrong with the world?

  462. I am. You are. G .K. Chesterton, I think, that

  463. was one of the major newspapers that submitted

  464. a contest said, asking people what's wrong with

  465. the world, and he submitted a two -word response,

  466. I am. What's the problem? Us. We are the problem.

  467. How? Our hearts are not clean before God. Look

  468. at verses 19 and 20. For out of the heart proceed

  469. evil thoughts and murders and adulteries and

  470. fornications, thefts, false witnesses, blasphemies.

  471. Jesus starts a list of myriad of things that

  472. flow from unclean hearts, but he begins with

  473. evil thoughts. Why? Because evil thoughts give

  474. rise to evil actions. Earlier, in verses 1 through

  475. 9, what we looked at last week, do you remember

  476. what he accused the Pharisees of breaking? He

  477. said, you broke the fifth commandment, which

  478. requires you to honor your parents. You violated

  479. that. But now he shows how the other commandments

  480. are being broken as well by unclean hearts. Now

  481. stay with me here. Out of the heart comes first

  482. evil thoughts. Now, really, to have evil thoughts

  483. is a violation of the Tenth Commandment. What

  484. is the Tenth Commandment? You shall not covet.

  485. What is covetousness? It's a strong desire to

  486. have what someone else has. And when you covet

  487. too much, it leads to things. When you really

  488. want what someone else has, you're going to try

  489. to take it. Okay, so it leads to things like

  490. murder. That's a violation of the Sixth Commandment.

  491. It leads to adultery. You want your neighbor's

  492. wife or fornication. You want that woman or that

  493. man. That's a violation of the seventh commandment.

  494. It leads to theft. It's a violation of the eighth

  495. commandment. It leads to false witness. That's

  496. a violation of the ninth commandment. It leads

  497. to blasphemies against God and against our fellow

  498. man, speaking evil of them. It's a violation

  499. of the third commandment. Now do you see the

  500. progression? From evil hearts, come evil thoughts,

  501. which lead to evil actions, and then leads to

  502. evil speech. The problem is pervasive. All of

  503. it is disordered. Do you see the problem? It's

  504. the heart. If you fix your heart, then these

  505. actions will also be fixed. Now this list is

  506. not exhaustive. It's not as though if you avoid

  507. these sins, well now you're in the clear, because

  508. that was the mistakes the Pharisees made. Don't

  509. murder? Okay, well technically I'm not taking

  510. a life. Don't commit adultery? Technically I'm

  511. not sleeping with her. They believed in holiness

  512. by rule keeping. But the Ten Commandments were

  513. not given for that purpose. The Decalogue, the

  514. Ten Commandments were given to show how corrupt

  515. our hearts really are. We have broken them. Jesus

  516. talked about that in the Sermon on the Mount.

  517. Okay, you've not committed adultery. Have you

  518. ever lusted in your heart ever? You violate it.

  519. Okay, you've not committed murder. Have you ever

  520. been really angry? Okay, you violated the intention.

  521. So it shows us how we've broken the law and it

  522. also shows the resulting guilt we have before

  523. God. There's God's standard, yes. But they're

  524. given to show how we've transgressed that standard.

  525. The first one, thou shalt have no other gods

  526. before me. Has there ever been a time in your

  527. life where you wanted something above God? Can

  528. you say that you have loved God with all your

  529. heart, mind, soul, body, and strength at all

  530. times, perfectly, in every way, every second

  531. of your entire life? Of course not. Then you're

  532. an idolater. You've broken God's law. See, we

  533. sin because we are sinners. We are not sinners

  534. because we sin. You were born a sinner. So what

  535. is going to come from the sinner? Sin. We are

  536. not made sinners because we sin. I hope that

  537. you understand the distinction there. Jesus said

  538. we are corrupt from within. We don't go corrupt,

  539. grow corrupt from without. Which is why, where

  540. do we really need to be cleansed? In the inner

  541. man. With what? With what? The gift of new life.

  542. Verse 20, if you look at it again. These are

  543. the things which defile man, but to eat with

  544. unwashed hands does not defile. This is the essence

  545. of his complaint. against the Pharisees. They're

  546. ignoring what's really important. But there's

  547. one question as we close that we have not yet

  548. addressed. How did we get those unclean hearts

  549. in the first place? We were born. We were born

  550. in Adam's line. And we inherited his guilt and

  551. his corruption. Romans 5 talks about this. Through

  552. one man, that is Adam, sin entered the world.

  553. and death through sin, thus death spread to all

  554. men because all sinned. All sinned in Adam. The

  555. old New England prayer, remember, in Adam's fall,

  556. we sinned all. We all sinned in Adam. We got

  557. his guilt and his corruption. Therefore, through

  558. one man's offense, Adam's judgment came to all

  559. men, resulting in condemnation. What Paul in

  560. Romans 5 is saying, you and I were born depraved,

  561. separated from God, and in need of new life.

  562. That cute little baby you gave birth to is cute,

  563. but it is corrupt. Jody Bauckham used to call

  564. them vipers and diapers. And it's a true statement.

  565. Adam's sin affected all of humanity, except one.

  566. The one who was born through the virgin's womb.

  567. See, the answer to our deepest problem is found

  568. with a virgin -born son of God. Jesus gives a

  569. clear diagnosis of what is wrong in Matthew 15.

  570. Our corruption, pollution, defilement, however

  571. you want to say it, it's not external. It's not

  572. outside of us. It is internal. Which means the

  573. problem that is fundamental is not with the culture.

  574. The culture is depraved, but that's not your

  575. primary problem. Or with your circumstances,

  576. but with us. So if the problem were external,

  577. then just clean up your behavior would work.

  578. But if it's internal, cleaning up behavior and

  579. adding rules fails to address the problem. So

  580. you can incorporate better habits. You can add

  581. more religious rules to your life, but they're

  582. not going to matter. We need to be cleansed from

  583. the inside out. We need to be changed. The Pharisees

  584. said, well, you can be holy, just don't eat certain

  585. foods. You need to wash your hands a certain

  586. way, and you need to follow these certain purification

  587. rites. But Jesus said, no, you need more than

  588. ceremonial washings. You need more than that.

  589. You need to have a new heart, a new birth. And

  590. that's why Jesus came. The promise of the new

  591. covenant was given in the old covenant. In Ezekiel

  592. 36, we read these words, God speaking, I will

  593. give you a new heart and put a new spirit within

  594. you. and I will take the heart of stone out of

  595. your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

  596. I will put my spirit within you, and I will cause

  597. you to walk in my statutes. And you will, because

  598. God did it, you will keep my judgments and do

  599. them. Jesus did not come to give us a new set

  600. of ethics, a new set of rules. Instead, he came

  601. to give us new life. It's a life we never had

  602. before, a life we could never have on our own.

  603. See, Jesus was the only one who ever had a completely

  604. clean heart. He was pure, completely. He loved

  605. the Lord God rightly. Nothing sinful ever was

  606. found in him or came out of him because nothing

  607. sinful was ever in him. Ever. Peter called him

  608. a lamb without blemish and without spot. He's

  609. perfect in every way. Internally, he loved the

  610. Lord as God, and externally, he kept all the

  611. commandments of God. And this pure, spotless

  612. lamb. He goes to a cruel cross, a rugged tree,

  613. where he died for sinful people with sinful hearts

  614. like you and me. On that cross, the sinless one

  615. bore the judgment that you and I absolutely deserve.

  616. We were corrupt, but he took our corruption and

  617. he started to make us clean. Listen to the words

  618. of Peter again. Speaking of Jesus, that last

  619. slide, guys. Who committed no sin, nor was deceit

  620. found in his mouth. Oh, when he's reviled, he

  621. did not revile in return. When he suffered, and

  622. he suffered. He didn't threaten. He committed

  623. himself to him who judges righteously. Who himself

  624. bore our sins in his own body on the tree that

  625. is the cross. That we, having died to sins, because

  626. now we've been made new, might live for righteousness

  627. by whose stripes you were healed. The stripes

  628. of Jesus, the suffering of Jesus, that cleansed

  629. you. That's what heals you. He died on the cross.

  630. He rose again the third day. And he offers cleansing

  631. and new life. To everyone who will trust in him.

  632. J .C. Ryle said, the right heart is a heart that

  633. is sprinkled with the blood of Christ that has

  634. been renewed by the Holy Spirit and it is purified

  635. by faith. My admonition, my plea to you is come

  636. to Christ and be cleansed. Come to Christ and

  637. find new life. We're getting ready to come to

  638. the table. We call it the table of the Lord,

  639. communion. Do you know what communion represents?

  640. Listen carefully. God comes to us in our mess.

  641. Our messes. This past week, I suspect you, like

  642. I, have failed again, right? We didn't live quite

  643. up to even our own standards. And Jesus is not

  644. embarrassed by that. He offers himself to us.

  645. Come receive his grace. Receive his forgiveness.

  646. Come to Jesus, his broken body, his shed blood

  647. that was given for you. Commune with Christ.

  648. He's not ashamed of you. You may be thinking

  649. here, Pastor, my life's a mess. I believe it.

  650. I think all of us have that at times. But Jesus

  651. loves and takes delight in cleaning up messy

  652. lives. Come to him. There is no other solution.

  653. There is no other name, there is no other Savior

  654. than the one that was born from the virgin who

  655. gave his life and rose again the third day. Let's

  656. praise God and let's come to the table, friends,

  657. as believers rejoicing in his forgiveness through

  658. his body and through his blood. Let's pray. Heavenly

  659. Father, we thank you so very much, Lord, for

  660. your word this morning. Lord, it is rich, it's

  661. beautiful. Lord, it gives us sustenance. God,

  662. it ministers to us, Lord, as we just see Christ

  663. and the beauty of his person and the beauty of

  664. his grace. God, would you do a work in the lives

  665. of your people? Lord, there may be some, and

  666. there probably are, Lord, who are assembled here

  667. this morning amongst this group, Lord, whose

  668. hearts still are cold and stony. Lord God, I

  669. pray that you would remove the heart of stone

  670. and give them a heart of flesh, help them to

  671. see their sin. Help them see the beauty of the

  672. Savior and the grace that's in him. Lord God,

  673. bring them into the kingdom and may they celebrate

  674. forgiveness and cleansing that's offered through

  675. Christ. Lord, we love you. Thank you, Lord, for

  676. this time. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
