  1. Joshua. Joshua won one after the death of Moses, the

  2. servant of the Lord. The Lord said to Joshua, the

  3. son of Nune, moses assistant.

  4. Moses, my servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over

  5. this Jordan, you and all this people into the land

  6. that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.

  7. Every place that the soul of your foot will tread upon,

  8. I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

  9. From the wilderness and this Lebanon, as far as the

  10. great River, the River Euphrates, all the land of the

  11. Hittites to the great Sea towards the going down of

  12. the Sun, shall be your territory. No man shall be

  13. able to stand before you all the days of your life,

  14. just as I was with Moses, so I will be

  15. with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.

  16. Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people

  17. to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers

  18. to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being

  19. careful to do according to all the law that Moses

  20. my servant commanded. You do not turn from it to

  21. the right hand or to the left, that you may

  22. have good success wherever you go. This book of the

  23. Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall

  24. meditate on it day and night, so that you may

  25. be careful to do according to all that is written

  26. in it. For then you will make your way prosperous,

  27. and then you will have good success. Have I not

  28. commanded you be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened,

  29. and do not be dismayed, For the Lord your God

  30. is with you wherever you go.

  31. And Joshua commanded the officers of the people.

  32. Pass through the midst of the camp and command the

  33. people prepare your provisions, for within three days you are

  34. to pass over this Jordan, to go in to take

  35. possession of the land that the Lord your God is

  36. giving you to possess.

  37. And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe

  38. of Manassa.

  39. Joshua said, remember the word that Moses, the servant of

  40. the Lord, commanded you, saying, the Lord your God is

  41. providing you a place of rest and will give you

  42. this land. Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock

  43. shall remain in the land that Moses gave you beyond

  44. the Jordan, But all the men of valor among you

  45. shall pass over armed before your brothers and shall help

  46. them until the Lord gives rest to your brothers as

  47. he has to you, and may also take possession of

  48. the land that the Lord your God is giving them.

  49. Then you shall return to the land of your possession

  50. and shall possess it the land that Moses, the servant

  51. of the Lord, gave you, beyond the Jordan or the

  52. sun rise.

  53. And they answered, Joshua.

  54. All that you have commanded us, we will do, and

  55. wherever you send us, we will go, just as we

  56. obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you.

  57. Only.

  58. May the Lord your God be with you as he

  59. was with Moses.

  60. Whoever rebels against your commandment and.

  61. Disobeys your words whatever you command him, shall be put

  62. to death.

  63. Only be strong and courageous.

  64. Joshua two and Joshua, the son of Nun sent two

  65. men secretly from Shidham as spies, saying.

  66. Go you the land, especially Jericho.

  67. And they went and came into the house of a

  68. prostitute whose name was Rahab, and lodged there. And it

  69. was told to the King of Jericho, behold, men of

  70. Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.

  71. Then the King of Jericho sent to Rehab, saying.

  72. Bring out the men who have come to you who

  73. entered your house, for they have come to search out

  74. all the land.

  75. But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them,

  76. and she said, true.

  77. The men came to me, but I did not know

  78. where they were from. And when the gate was about

  79. to be closed at dark, the men went out. I

  80. do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly,

  81. for you will overtake them.

  82. But she had brought them up to the roof and

  83. hid them with the stalks of flax that she had

  84. laid an order on the roof. So the men pursued

  85. after them on the way to the Jordan as far

  86. as the fords, and the gate was shut as soon

  87. as the pursuers had gone out. Before the men laid down,

  88. she came up to them on the roof and said

  89. to the men.

  90. I know that the Lord has given you the land,

  91. and that the fear of you has fallen upon us,

  92. and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away

  93. before you. For we have heard how the Lord dried

  94. up the water of the Red Sea before you when

  95. you came out of Egypt, and what you did to

  96. the two kings of the Emirits who were beyond the Jordan,

  97. j Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. And

  98. as soon as we heard it, our hearts smelted, and

  99. there was no spirit left in any man because of you.

  100. For the Lord your God, he is God in the

  101. heavens above and on the earth beneath nothing. Please swear

  102. to me by the Lord, that as I have dealt

  103. kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my

  104. father's house, and give me a sure sign that you

  105. will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters,

  106. and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives

  107. from death.

  108. And the men said to her, our life for yours,

  109. even to death. If you do not tell this business

  110. of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land,

  111. we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.

  112. Then she let them down by a rope through the window,

  113. for her house was built into the city wall, so

  114. that she lived in the wall.

  115. And she said to them, go into the hills, or

  116. the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days

  117. until the pursuers have returned, Then afterwards you may go

  118. your way.

  119. Men said to her, we will be guiltless with respect

  120. to this oath of yours that you have made us swear.

  121. Behold, when we.

  122. Come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord

  123. in the window through which you let us down. And

  124. you shall gather into your house, or father and mother,

  125. your brothers, and all your father's household. Then if anyone

  126. goes out of the doors of your house into the street,

  127. his blood shall be on his own head, and we

  128. shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on

  129. anyone who is with you in the house, his blood

  130. shall be on our head. But if you tell this

  131. business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect

  132. to your oath that you have made us swear.

  133. And she said, according to your words, so be it.

  134. Then she sent them away, and they departed, and she

  135. tied the scarlet cord in the window. They departed and

  136. went into the hills, and remained there three days until

  137. the pursuers returned. And the pursuers searched all along the

  138. way and found nothing. Then the two men returned. They

  139. came down from the hills and passed over and came

  140. to Joshua, the son of None, and they told him

  141. all that had happened to them. And they said to Joshua, truly,

  142. the Lord has given all the land into our hands.

  143. And also all the inhabitants of the land melt away because.

  144. Of us.

  145. Joshua. Three. Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and

  146. they set out from Shidham, and they came to the Jordan,

  147. He and all the people of Israel, and lodged there

  148. before they passed over. At the end of three days,

  149. the officers went through the camp and commanded the people.

  150. As soon as you see the ark of the Covenant

  151. of the Lord your God, being carried by the levitical priests,

  152. then you shall set out from your place and follow it.

  153. Yet there shall.

  154. Be a distance between you and it, about two thousand

  155. cubits in length. Do not come near it, in order

  156. that you may know the way you shall go, for

  157. you have not passed this way before.

  158. Then, Joshua said to the.

  159. People, consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders

  160. among you.

  161. And Joshua said to the priests.

  162. Take up the ark of the Covenant and pass on

  163. Before the people.

  164. So they took up the Ark of the Covenant and

  165. went before the people. The Lord said to Joshua.

  166. Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight

  167. of all Israel, that they may know that as I

  168. was with Moses, so I will be with you. And

  169. as for you, command the priests who bear the Ark

  170. of the Covenant, when you come to the brink of

  171. the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in

  172. the Jordan.

  173. And Joshua said to the people of Israel, come here

  174. and listen to the words of the Lord, your God.

  175. And Joshua said.

  176. Here is how you shall know that the Living God

  177. is among you, and that he will without fail drive

  178. out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites,

  179. the Perizites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. Behold,

  180. the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord of all

  181. the Earth is passing over before you into the Jordan. Now, therefore,

  182. take twelve men from the tribes of Israel, from each

  183. tribe a man, And when the souls of the feet

  184. of the priests bearing the Ark of the Lord, the

  185. Lord of all the Earth, shall rest in the waters

  186. of the Jordan. The waters of the Jordan shall be

  187. cut off from flowing, and the waters coming down from

  188. above shall stand in one heat.

  189. So when the people set out from their tents to

  190. pass over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the Ark

  191. of the Covenant before the people, and as soon as

  192. those bearing the ark had come as far as the Jordan,

  193. and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were

  194. dipped in the brink of the water. Now the Jordan

  195. overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest. The

  196. waters coming down from above stood and rose up in

  197. a heap very far away at Adam, the city, that

  198. is besides Zarathan, and those flowing down toward the sea

  199. of the Araba the salt sea, were completely cut off,

  200. and the people passed over opposite Jericho. Now the priests

  201. bearing the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord stood

  202. firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan,

  203. and all Israel was passing over on dry ground until

  204. all the nation finished passing over the Jordan. Joshua four.

  205. When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan,

  206. the Lord said to Joshua.

  207. Take twelve men from the people from each tribe a

  208. man and command them, say, take twelve stones from here,

  209. out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very

  210. place where the priests stood firmly, and bring them over

  211. with you, and lay them down in the place where

  212. you lodge tonight.

  213. Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel,

  214. whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe, and

  215. Joshua said to.

  216. Them, pass on before the ark of the Lord, your God,

  217. into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each

  218. of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the

  219. number of the tribes of the people of Israel, that

  220. this may be a sign among you. When your children

  221. ask in time to come, what do those stones mean

  222. to you, then you shall tell them that the waters

  223. of the Jordan were cut off before the Ark of

  224. the Covenant of the Lord, when it passed over the Jordan,

  225. the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these

  226. stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.

  227. And the people of Israel did just as Joshua commanded,

  228. and took up twelve stones out of the midst of

  229. the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of

  230. the people of Israel, just as the Lord told Joshua,

  231. and they carried them over with them to the place

  232. where they lodged, and laid them down there. And Joshua

  233. set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan,

  234. in the place where the feet of the priests bearing

  235. the Ark of the Covenant had stood, and they are

  236. there to this day. For the priests bearing the Ark

  237. stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished,

  238. that the Lord commanded Joshua to tell the people according

  239. to all that Moses had commanded Joshua, the people passed

  240. over in haste. And when all the people had finished

  241. passing over, the ark of the Lord and the priests

  242. passed over before the people, the sons of Reuben and

  243. the sons of God, and the half tribe of Manassa

  244. passed over, armed before the people of Israel, as Moses

  245. had told them, about forty thousand, ready for war, passed

  246. over before the Lord for battle to the plains of Jericho.

  247. On that day, the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight

  248. of all Israel, and they stood in awe of him,

  249. just as they had stood in awe of Moses all

  250. the days of his life. And the Lord said to.

  251. Joshua, command the priest burying the ark of the testimony

  252. to come up out of the Jordan.

  253. So Joshua commanded the priests come up out of the Jordan.

  254. And when the priests bearing the ark of the Covenant

  255. of the Lord, came up from the midst of the Jordan,

  256. and the souls of the priest's feet were lifted up

  257. on dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to

  258. their place and overflowed all its banks as before. The

  259. people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth

  260. day of the first month, and they encamped at Gilgal

  261. on the east border of Jericho. And those twelve stones

  262. which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up

  263. at Gilgal, and he said to the people of Israel.

  264. When your children asked their fathers in times to come,

  265. what do these stones mean? And you shall let your

  266. children know. Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground,

  267. for the Lord your God dried up the waters of

  268. the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the

  269. Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he

  270. dried up for us until we passed over, so that

  271. all the peoples of the earth may know that the

  272. hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear

  273. the Lord, your God forever.

  274. Joshua five. As soon as all the kings of the

  275. Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and

  276. all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea,

  277. heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of

  278. the Jordan for the people of Israel. Until they had

  279. crossed over, their hearts melted, and there was no longer

  280. any spirit in them. Because of the people of Israel.

  281. At that time, the Lord said to Joshua.

  282. Make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a

  283. second time.

  284. So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of

  285. Israel at Gibeath Heyerilah. And this is the reason why

  286. Joshua circumcised them. All the males of the people who

  287. came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had

  288. died in the wilderness on the way after they had

  289. come out of Egypt. Though all the people who came

  290. out had been circumcised, Yet all the people who were

  291. born on the way in the wilderness after they had

  292. come out of Egypt had not been circumcised. For the

  293. people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until

  294. all the nations the men of war who came out

  295. of Egypt perished because they did not obey the voice

  296. of the Lord. The Lord swore to them that he

  297. would not let them see the land that the Lord

  298. had sworn to their fathers to give to us, a

  299. land flowing with milk and honey. So it was their

  300. children whom he raised up in their place that Joshua circumcised,

  301. for they were uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised

  302. on the way. When the circumcising of the whole nation

  303. was finished, they remained in their places in the camp

  304. until they were healed.

  305. He said to Joshua, today I have rolled away the

  306. reproach of Egypt from.

  307. You, and so the name of that place is called

  308. Gilgal to this day. While the people of Israel were

  309. encamped at Gilgal, they kept the passover on the fourteenth

  310. day of the month in the evening on the plains

  311. of Jericho. And the day after the Passover, on that

  312. very day, they ate of the produce of the land,

  313. unleavened cakes and parched grain, and the manna ceased. The

  314. day after they ate of the produce of the land,

  315. and there was no longer manna for the people of Israel,

  316. but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan.

  317. That year, when Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up

  318. his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing

  319. before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And

  320. Joshua went to him and said to him.

  321. Are you for us or for our adversaries?

  322. And he said no, But I am the commander of

  323. the army of the Lord. Now I have come. And

  324. Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped,

  325. and said to him.

  326. What does my Lord say to his servant?

  327. And the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua.

  328. Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place

  329. where you are standing is holy.

  330. And Joshua did so. Joshua six. Now Jericho was shut

  331. up inside and outside because of the people of Israel.

  332. None went out and none came in. And the Lord said.

  333. To Joshua, see, I have given Jericho into your hand,

  334. with its king and mighty men of valor. You shall

  335. march around the city all the men of war going

  336. around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days,

  337. seven priest shall bear seven trumpets of rams horns before

  338. the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around

  339. the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

  340. And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn.

  341. When you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all

  342. the people shall shout with a great shout, and the

  343. wall of the city will fall down the flat, and

  344. the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.

  345. So Joshua, the son of Nune, called the priests and

  346. said to them them.

  347. Take up the ark of the Covenant, and let seven

  348. priests spare seven trumpets of ramshorns before the ark of

  349. the Lord.

  350. And he said to the people.

  351. Go forward, march around the city, and let the armed

  352. men pass on before the ark of the Lord.

  353. And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven

  354. priests bearing the seven trumpets of ramshorns before the Lord

  355. went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the

  356. Covenant of the Lord following them. The armed men were

  357. walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and

  358. the rear guard was walking after the ark while the

  359. trumpets blew continually. Joshua commanded the people.

  360. You shall not shout or make your voice heard, either

  361. shall anywhere go out of your mouth until the day

  362. I tell you to shout, then you shall shout.

  363. So he caused the Ark of the Lord to circle

  364. the city, going about at once, and they came into

  365. the camp and spent the night in the camp. Then

  366. Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priest took

  367. up the ark of the Lord, and the seven priests

  368. bearing the seven trumpets of ramshorns before the Ark of

  369. the Lord walked on and they blew the trumpets continually,

  370. and the armed men were walking before them, and the

  371. rear guard was walking after the Ark of the Lord,

  372. while the trumpets blew continually. And the second day they

  373. marched around the city once and returned into the camp.

  374. So they did for six days. On the seventh day,

  375. they rose early at the dawn of day and marched

  376. around the city in the same manner seven times. It

  377. was only on that day that they marched around the

  378. city seven times, And at the seventh time, when the

  379. priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people.

  380. Shout for the Lord has given you the city, and

  381. the city and all that is within it shall be

  382. devoted to the Lord for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute,

  383. and all who are with her in her house shall live,

  384. because she hid the messengers whom we sent. But you

  385. keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, Lest when

  386. you have devoted them, you take any of the devoted

  387. things and make the camp of Israel a thing for

  388. destruction and bring trouble upon it. But all silver and gold,

  389. and every vessel of bronze and iron are wholly to

  390. the Lord. They shall go unto the treasury of the Lord.

  391. So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As

  392. soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet,

  393. the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell

  394. down flat, so that the people went up into the city,

  395. every man straight before him, and they captured the city.

  396. Then they devoted all in the city to both men

  397. and women, young and old, oxen, sheep and donkeys with

  398. the edge of the sword. But to the two men

  399. who would spied out the Lamb.

  400. Joshua said, go into the prostitute's house, and bring out

  401. from there the woman and all who belonged to her,

  402. as you swore to her.

  403. So the young men who had been spies went in

  404. and brought out Rahab and her father and mother, and brothers,

  405. and all who belonged to her. And they brought all

  406. her relatives and put them outside the camp of Israel.

  407. And they burned the city with fire, and everything in it.

  408. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze

  409. and of iron they put into the treasury of the

  410. house of the Lord. But Rahab, the prostitute, and her

  411. father's household, and all who belonged to her, Joshua saved alive.

  412. And she has lived in Israel to this day because

  413. she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

  414. Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying.

  415. Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up

  416. and rebuilds the city Jericho. And of his firstborn shall

  417. he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his

  418. youngest son shall he set up its gates.

  419. So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame was

  420. in all the land Joshua seven. But the people of

  421. Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things for Aikan,

  422. the son of Karmai, son of Zabdai, son of Zira,

  423. of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things,

  424. and the anger of the Lord burned against the people

  425. of Israelrael. Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which

  426. is near beth Avon, east of Bethel, and said to them.

  427. Go up and spy out the land.

  428. And the men went up and spied out Ai. And

  429. they returned to Joshua and said to.

  430. Him, do not have all the people go up, but

  431. not about two or three thousand men go up and

  432. attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there,

  433. for they are few.

  434. So about three thousand men went up there from the people,

  435. and they fled before the men of Ai. And the

  436. men of Ai killed about thirty six of their men

  437. and chased them before the gate as far as Schebrim

  438. and struck them at the descent, and the hearts of

  439. the people melted and became as water. Then Joshua tore

  440. his clothes and fell to the earth on his face

  441. before the ark of the Lord. Until the evening he

  442. and the elders of Israel, and they put dust on

  443. their heads and Joshua said.

  444. Alas, O, Lord God, why have you brought this people

  445. over the Jordan at all to give us into the

  446. hands of the Amorites to destroy us? That we had

  447. been content to dwell beyond the Jordan. Oh Lord, what

  448. can I say when Israel has turned their backs before

  449. their enemies? But the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of

  450. the land will hear of it and will surround us

  451. and cut off our name from the earth. And what

  452. will you do for your great name?

  453. The Lord said to Joshua, Get up?

  454. Why have you fallen on your face? Israel has sinned.

  455. They have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them. They

  456. have taken some of the devoted things they have stolen

  457. and lied, and put them among their own belongings. Therefore,

  458. the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They

  459. turn their backs before their enemies because they have become

  460. devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more

  461. unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. Get up,

  462. consecrate the people, and say, consecrate yourselves for tomorrow. For

  463. thus says the Lord God of Israel, there are devoted

  464. things in your midst o Israel. You cannot stand before

  465. your enemies until you take away the devoted things from

  466. among you. In the morning. Therefore you shall be brought

  467. near by your tribes, And the tribe that the Lord

  468. takes by lot shall come near by Klan, and the

  469. clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households,

  470. and the household that the Lord takes shall come near

  471. man by man. And he who is taken with the

  472. devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all

  473. that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of

  474. the Lord, and because he has done an outrageous thing

  475. in Israel.

  476. So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel

  477. near tried by tribe, and the tribal Judah was taken,

  478. and he brought near the clans of Judah, and the

  479. clan of the Zira Heights was taken, and he brought

  480. near the clan of the Zira Heights man by man,

  481. and Zabdai was taken, and he brought near his household

  482. man by man, and Aiken, the son of Karmai, son

  483. of Zabdai, son of Zira, of the tribe of Judah

  484. was taken Then Joshua said to Acan.

  485. My son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel,

  486. and give praise to him. And tell me now what

  487. you have done. Do not hide it from me.

  488. And Aiken answered Joshua, truly, I have seen against the

  489. Lord God of Israel. And this is what I did.

  490. When I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar,

  491. and two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of

  492. gold weighing fifty shekels. Then I coveted them and took them.

  493. And see they are hidden in the earth inside my tent,

  494. with the silver underneath.

  495. So Joshua sent messengers and they ran to the tent,

  496. and behold, it was hidden in his tent, with the

  497. silver underneath. And they took them out of the tent

  498. and brought them to Joshua and to all the people

  499. of Israel. And they laid them down before the Lord.

  500. And Joshua and all Israel with him took Aikin, the

  501. son of Zira, and the silver and the cloak, and

  502. the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters, and

  503. his oxen and donkeys and sheep, and his tent and

  504. all that he had, and they brought them up to

  505. the Valley of Acor. And Joshua said.

  506. Why did you bring trouble on us? The Lord brings

  507. trouble on you.

  508. Today, And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned

  509. them with fire, and stoned them with stones, and they

  510. raised over him a great heap of stones that remains

  511. to this day. Then the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore,

  512. to this day the name of that place is called

  513. the Valley of Acor. Joshua eight and the Lord said to.

  514. Joshua, do not fear, and do not be dismayed. Take

  515. all the fighting men with you, and arise go up

  516. to Ai. See I have given into your hand the

  517. King of Ai and his people, his city, and his land.

  518. And you shall do to Ai and its king as

  519. you did to Jericho and its king. Only it's spoiled

  520. and its livestock you shall take as place for yourselves

  521. lay an ambush against the city behind it.

  522. So Joshua and all the fighting men arose to go

  523. up to Ai. And Joshua chose thirty thousand mighty men

  524. of Valor and sent them out by night night, and

  525. he commanded them.

  526. Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city behind it.

  527. Do not go very far from the city. But all

  528. of you remain ready, and I and all the people

  529. who are with me will approach the city. And when

  530. they come out against us, just as before, we shall

  531. flee before them. And they will come out after us

  532. until we have drawn them away from the city, or

  533. they will say they are fleeing from us, just as before.

  534. So we will flee before them. Then you shall rise

  535. up from the ambush and seize the city. For the

  536. Lord your God will give it into your hand. And

  537. as soon as you have taken the city, you shall

  538. set the city on fire. You shall do according to

  539. the word of the Lord. See I have commanded you.

  540. So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the

  541. place of Ambush and lay between Bethel and Ai, to

  542. the west of Ai. But Joshua spent that night among

  543. the people. Joshua arose early in the morning and mustered

  544. the people and went up. He and the elders of

  545. Israel before the people to Ai. And all the fighting

  546. men who were with him went up and drew near

  547. before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai,

  548. with a ravine between them and Ai. He took about

  549. five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel

  550. and Ai, to the west of the city. So they

  551. stationed the forces the main encampment that was north of

  552. the city and its rear guard west of the city.

  553. But Joshua spent that night in the valley. And as

  554. soon as the King of Ai saw this, he and

  555. all his people the men of the city hurried and

  556. went out early to the appointed place toward the Araba,

  557. to meet Israel in battle. But he did not know

  558. that there was an ambush against him behind the city,

  559. and Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before

  560. them and fled in the direction of the wilderness. So

  561. all the people who were in the city were called

  562. together to pursue them. And as they pursued Joshua, they

  563. were drawn away from the city. Not a man was

  564. left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out

  565. after Israel. They left the city open and pursued Israel.

  566. Then the lord said to.

  567. Joshua, stretch out the javelin that is in your hand

  568. toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.

  569. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his

  570. hand toward the city, and the men in the ambush

  571. rose quickly out of their place, and as soon as

  572. he had stretched out his hand, they ran and entered

  573. the city and captured it. And they hurried to set

  574. the city on fire. So when the men of Ai

  575. looked back, behold, the smoke of the city went up

  576. to heaven, and they had no power to flee this

  577. way or that. For the people who fled to the

  578. wilderness turned back against the pursuers. And when Joshua and

  579. all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city

  580. and that the smoke of the city went up, then

  581. they turned back and struck down the men of Ai.

  582. And the others came out from the city against them.

  583. So they were in the midst of Israel, some on

  584. this side and some on that side, and Israel struck

  585. them down until there was left none that survived or escaped.

  586. But the King of Ai. They took alive and brought

  587. him near to Joshua. When Israel had finished killing all

  588. the inhabitants of Ai in the open wilderness where they

  589. pursued them, and all of them to the very last

  590. had fallen by the edge of the sword, all Israel

  591. returned to Ai and struck it down with the edge

  592. of the sword, and all who fell that day, both

  593. men and women, were twelve thousand, all the people of Ai.

  594. But Joshua did not draw back his hand with which

  595. he stretched out the javelin, until he had devoted all

  596. the inhabitants of Ai to destruction. Only the live stock

  597. and the spoil of that city. Israel took as their plunder,

  598. according to the word of the Lord that he commanded Joshua.

  599. So Joshua burned Ai and made it forever a heap

  600. of ruins, as it is to this day. And he

  601. hanged the King of Ai on a tree until evening.

  602. And at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took his body

  603. down from the tree and threw it at the entrance

  604. of the gate of the city, and raised over it

  605. a great heap of stones, which stands there to this day.

  606. At that time, Joshua built an altar to the Lord,

  607. the God of Israel, on Mount Ebel, just as Moses,

  608. the servant of the Lord, had commanded the people of Israel,

  609. as it is written in the Book of the Law

  610. of Moses, an altar of uncut stones upon which no

  611. man has wielded an iron tool, and they offered on

  612. it burnt offerings to the Lord and sacrificed peace offerings.

  613. And there, in the presence of the people of Israel,

  614. he wrote on the stones a copy of the Law

  615. of Moses which he had written. And all israel sojourner

  616. as well as native born, with their elders and officers

  617. and their judges, stood on opposite sides of the ark,

  618. before the levitical priests who carried the Ark of the

  619. Covenant of the Lord, half of them in front of

  620. Mount Garrison, and half of them in front of Mount Ebel,

  621. just as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had commanded

  622. it the first to bless the people of Israel. And

  623. afterward he read all the words of the Law, the

  624. blessing and the curse. According to all that is written

  625. in the Book of the Law. There was not a

  626. word of all that Moses commanded that Joshua did not

  627. read before all the assembly of Israel, and the women

  628. and the little ones, and the sojourners who lived among

  629. them Joshua nine nine, as soon as all the kings

  630. who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country and

  631. in the lowland, all along the coast of the Great

  632. Sea toward Lebanon. The Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizites,

  633. the Hivites, and the Jebusites heard of this, they gathered

  634. together as one to fight against Joshua and Israel. But

  635. when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done

  636. to Jericho and to Ai, they on their part acted

  637. with cunning and went and made ready provisions, and took

  638. worn out sacks for their donkeys, and wine skins worn

  639. out and torn and mended, with worn out pat sandals

  640. on their feet, and worn out clothes, and all their

  641. provisions were dry and crumbling. And they went to Joshua

  642. in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and

  643. to the men of Israel, we have.

  644. Come from a distant country, So now make a covenant

  645. with us.

  646. But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, perhaps

  647. you live among us, then how can we make a

  648. covenant with you? They said to Joshua, we are your servants.

  649. And Joshua said to them, who are you you?

  650. Where do you come from?

  651. They said to him, from a very distant country.

  652. Your servants have come because of the name of the

  653. Lord your God, for we have heard a report of

  654. him and all that he did in Egypt, and all

  655. that he did to the two kings of the Amorites

  656. who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihan, the king of Heshban,

  657. and to our king of Beishan, who lived in Astarah.

  658. So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country

  659. said to us, take provisions in your hand for their journey,

  660. and go to meet them, and say to them, we

  661. are your servants. Come now make a covenant with us.

  662. Here is our bread. It was still warm when we

  663. took it from our houses as our food for the

  664. journey on the day we set out to come to you.

  665. But now behold it is dry and crumbly.

  666. These wine skins were new when we filled them, and

  667. behold they have burst. And these garments and sandals of

  668. ours are worn out from the very long journey.

  669. So the men took some of their provisions, but did

  670. not ask counsel from the Lord, and Joshua made peace

  671. with them and made a covenant with them to let

  672. them live. And the leaders of the congress swore to them.

  673. At the end of three days, after they had made

  674. a covenant with them. They heard that they were their

  675. neighbors and that they lived among them, And the people

  676. of Israel set out and reached their cities on the

  677. third day. Now their cities were Gibbeon, Kefirah, Biirah, and

  678. Kiriath Jirem. But the people of Israel did not attack them,

  679. because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them

  680. by the Lord, the God of Israel. Then all the

  681. congregation murmured against the leaders. But all the leaders said

  682. to all the congregation, we.

  683. Have sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel,

  684. and now we may not touch them. This we will

  685. do to them. Let them live, lest wrath be upon us,

  686. because of the oath that we swore to them them.

  687. And the leaders said to them them, let them live.

  688. So they became cutters of wood and drawers of water

  689. for all the congregation, just as the leaders had said

  690. of them. Joshua summoned them, and he said to them.

  691. Why did you deceive us, saying we are very far

  692. from you when you dwell among us. Now therefore you

  693. are cursed, and some of you shall never be anything

  694. but servants, cutters of wood and drawers of water for

  695. the house of my God.

  696. The answered Joshua, because it was told to your servants

  697. for a certainty, that the Lord your God had commanded

  698. his servant Moses to give you all the land and

  699. to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you.

  700. So we feared greatly for our lives because of.

  701. You, and did this thing.

  702. And now behold, we are in your hand. Whatever seems

  703. good and right in your sight to do to us,

  704. do it.

  705. So he did this to them, and delivered them out

  706. of the hand of the people of Israel. And they

  707. did not kill them. But Joshua made them that day

  708. cutters of wood and drawers of water for the congregation

  709. and for the altar of the Lord. To this day

  710. in the place that he should choose. Joshua ten as

  711. soon as Adun Iszidic king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua

  712. had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing

  713. to Ai and its king as he had done to

  714. Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon

  715. had made peace with Israel and were among them, he

  716. feared greatly because Gibeon was a great city, like one

  717. of the royal cities, and because it was greater than

  718. Ai and all its men were warriors. So Adon Iszidic,

  719. King of Jerusalem, sent to Hohem, king of Hebron, to Pyrum,

  720. king of Jarmuth, to Japhiah, King of Lakish, and to Debar,

  721. King of Eglin, saying.

  722. Come up to me and help me, and let us

  723. strike Gibbeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and

  724. with the people of Israel.

  725. Then the five kings of the Amorites, the King of Jerusalem,

  726. the King of Hebron, the King of Jarmath, the King

  727. of Lakish, and the King of Eglin, gathered their forces

  728. and went up with all their armies and encamped against

  729. Gibeon and made war against it. And the men of

  730. Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying.

  731. Do not relax your hand from your servants.

  732. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us,

  733. for all the kings of the Amori to dwell in

  734. the ill country are gathered against us.

  735. So Joshua went up from Gilgal he and all the

  736. people of war with him, and all the mighty men

  737. of Valor. And the Lord said to Joshua.

  738. Do not fear them, for I have given them into

  739. your hands. Not a man of them shall stand before you.

  740. So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all

  741. night from Gilgas, and the Lord threw them into a

  742. panic before Israel, who struck them with a great blow

  743. at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the

  744. ascent of beth Oran, and struck them as far as

  745. Ezeka and Mikdah. And as they fled before Israel, while

  746. they were going down the ascent of beth Boran, the

  747. Lord threw dea large stones from heaven on them as

  748. far as Azeka, and they died. There were more who

  749. died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel

  750. killed with the sword at that time. Joshua spoke to

  751. the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the

  752. Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said,

  753. in the sight of Israel.

  754. Sun stand still at Gibeon and mooned in the valley

  755. of Agelon.

  756. And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped until

  757. the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not

  758. written in the Book of Jasher. The Sun stopped in

  759. the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set

  760. for about a whole day. There has been no day

  761. like it before or since. When the Lord heeded the

  762. voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.

  763. So Joshua returned and all Israel with him to the

  764. camp at Gilgal. These five kings fled and hid themselves

  765. in the cave at Mikidah. And it was told to

  766. Joshua the kings been found hidden in the cave at Makidah.

  767. And Joshua said.

  768. Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and

  769. set men by it to guard them. But do not

  770. stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies, attack their rear guard.

  771. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord,

  772. your God has given them into your hand.

  773. When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking

  774. them with a great blow until they were wiped out,

  775. and when the remnant that remained of them had entered

  776. into the fortified cities, then all the people returned safe

  777. to Joshua. In the camp at Miqdah. Not a man

  778. moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.

  779. Then Joshua said, open the mouth of the cave, and

  780. bring those five kings out to me from the cave.

  781. And they did so, and brought those five kings out

  782. to him from the cave, the King of Jerusalem, the

  783. King of Hebron, the King of Jarmuth, the King of Lakish,

  784. and the King of Eglin. And when they brought those

  785. kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of

  786. Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of

  787. war who had gone with.

  788. Him, come near. Put your feet on the next of

  789. these caves.

  790. Then they came near and put their feet on their necks,

  791. and Joshua said to.

  792. Them, do not be afraid or dismayed. Be strong and courageous,

  793. for thus the Lord will do to all your enemies

  794. against whom you fight.

  795. And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death,

  796. and he hanged them on five trees, and they hung

  797. on the trees until evening. But at the time of

  798. the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and they

  799. took them down from the trees and threw them into

  800. the cave where they had hidden themselves. And they set

  801. large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remained

  802. to this very day. As for Mikita, Joshua captured it

  803. on that day and struck it and its king with

  804. the edge of the sword he devoted to destruction. Every

  805. person in it, he left none remaining, and he did

  806. to the king of Mikita, just as he had done

  807. to the King of Jericho. Then josh Shua and all

  808. Israel with him passed on from Mikdah to Libna and

  809. fought against Libna. And the Lord gave it also and

  810. its king into the hand of Israel, and he struck

  811. it with the edge of the sword, and every person

  812. in it. He left none remaining in it, and he

  813. did to its king as he had done to the

  814. King of Jericho. Then Joshua and all Israel with him

  815. passed on from Libna to Lakish and laid siege to

  816. it and fought against it. And the Lord gave Lakish

  817. into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on

  818. the second day and struck it with the edge of

  819. the sword and every person in it, as he had

  820. done to Libna. Then Horum, king of Gezer, came up

  821. to help Lakish and Joshua struck him and his people

  822. until he left none remaining. Then Joshua and all Israel

  823. with him passed on from Lakeish to Eglam, and they

  824. laid siege to it and fought against it, and they

  825. captured it on that day and struck it with the

  826. edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in

  827. it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lakeis.

  828. Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from

  829. Eglin to Hebron, and they fought against it and captured

  830. it and struck it with the edge of the sword,

  831. and its king and its towns and every person in it.

  832. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglin,

  833. and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.

  834. Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to

  835. Debar and fought against it, and he captured it with

  836. its king and all its towns, and they struck them

  837. with the edge of the sword, and devoted to destruction

  838. every person in it. He left none remaining, just as

  839. he had done to Hebron and to Livna and its king.

  840. So he did to Deber and to its king. So

  841. Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country, and the Negeb,

  842. and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings.

  843. He left none remaining, but devoted to destruction all that breathed,

  844. just as the Lord God of Israel commanded, and Joshua

  845. struck them from Kidosh Barnia as far as Gaza, and

  846. all the country of Goshen as far as Gibeon. And

  847. josh who captured all these kings and their land at

  848. one time because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.

  849. Then Joshua returned and all Israel with him to the

  850. camp at Gilgal Joshua eleven. When Jabin, king of Hazor,

  851. heard of this, he sent to Jobab, king of Maidon,

  852. and to the King of Shimran, and to the King

  853. of Akshaff, and to the kings who were in the

  854. northern hill country and in the Araba south of Kinnerath,

  855. and in the lowland and in Naphathdor on the west,

  856. to the Canaanites in the east and the west, the Amorites,

  857. the Hittites, the Perizites, and the Jebusites in the hill country,

  858. and the Hivites under Herman in the land of Mizpah.

  859. And they came out with all their troops, a great

  860. hoard in number, like the sand that is on the seashore,

  861. with very many horses and chariots. And all these kings

  862. joined their forces and came and encamped together at the

  863. waters of Merom to fight against Israel. And the Lord

  864. said to Joshua.

  865. Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow, at this time,

  866. I will give over all of them slain to Israel.

  867. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.

  868. So Joshua and all his warriors came suddenly against them

  869. by the waters of Miram and fell upon them, And

  870. the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who

  871. struck them and chased them as far as Great Sidon

  872. and misrofoff Mayem, and eastward as far as the valley

  873. of Mispay. And they struck them until he left none remaining.

  874. And Joshua did to them just as the Lord said

  875. to him. He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots

  876. with fire. And Joshua turned back at that time and

  877. captured Hazor and struck its king with the sword. For

  878. Hazar formerly was the head of all those kingdoms, and

  879. they struck with the sword all who were in it,

  880. devoting them to destruction. There was none left that breathed,

  881. And he burnt Hazor with fire, and all the cities

  882. of those kings, and all their kings Joshua captured and

  883. struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them

  884. to destruction, just as Moses, the servant of the Lord,

  885. had commanded. But none of the cities that stood on

  886. mounds did Israel burn, except Hazor alone that Joshua burned,

  887. and all the spoil of these cities, and the live

  888. stock the people of Israel took for their plunder. But

  889. every man they struck with the edge of the sword

  890. until they had destroyed them. And they did not leave

  891. any who breathed. Just as the Lord had commanded Moses

  892. his servant, So Moses commanded Joshua, And so Joshua did

  893. he left nothing undone of all that the Lord had

  894. commanded Moses. So Joshua took all that land, the hill country,

  895. and all the neget and all the land of Goshen,

  896. and the lowland and the Araba, and the hill country

  897. of Israel and its lowland from Mount Halek, which rises

  898. towards Sear as far as Bailgad in the valley of Lebanon,

  899. below Mount Herman, and he captured all their kings and

  900. struck them and put them to death. Joshua made war

  901. a long time with all those kings. There was not

  902. a city that made peace with the people of Israel,

  903. except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took them

  904. all in battle, for it was the Lord's doing to

  905. harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle,

  906. in order that they should be devoted to destruction and

  907. should receive no mercy, but be destroyed, just as the

  908. Lord commanded. Moses and Joshua came at that time and

  909. cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron,

  910. from Debur, from Anab, and from all the hill country

  911. of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel.

  912. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities. There was

  913. none of the anakin left in the land of the

  914. people of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in

  915. Ashdod did some remain. So Joshua took the whole land,

  916. according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses

  917. and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according

  918. to their tribal allotments, and the land had rest from

  919. war Joshua twelve. Now these are the kings of the

  920. land whom the people of Israel defeated and took possession

  921. of their land beyond the Jordan, towards the sunrise, from

  922. the valley of the Arnan to Mount Hermon with all

  923. the Araba eastward. Saihon, king of the Amorites, who lived

  924. at Heshbon and ruled from a rover which is on

  925. the edge of the valley of the Arnan, and from

  926. the middle of the valley as far as the River Jabuk,

  927. the boundary of the Ammonites, that is, half of Gilead

  928. and the Araba, to the sea of Kinnaroth eastward, and

  929. in the direction of Beth Jeshimath to the sea of

  930. the Araba, the Salt Sea southward to the foot of

  931. the slopes of Piska and Og King of Basin, one

  932. of the remnant of the Rephaem, who lived at Ashtaroth

  933. and at Edriai, and ruled over Mount Hermon and Saleka

  934. and all Basan to the boundary of the Gesherites and

  935. the Mayacathites, and over half of Gilead to the boundary

  936. of Sihon, King of Heshbon. Moses the servant of the Lord,

  937. and the people of Israel defeated them, and Moses, the

  938. servant of the Lord, gave their land for a possession

  939. to the Reubenites and the Gadites, and the half tribe

  940. of Manassa. And these are the kings of the land

  941. whom Joshua and the people of Israel defeated on the

  942. west side of the Jordan, from Bailgad, in the valley

  943. of Lebanon to Mount Halak that rises towards Seer. And

  944. Joshua gave their land to the tribes of Israel as

  945. a possession according to their allotments in the hill country,

  946. in the lowland, in the Araba, in the slopes, in

  947. the wilderness, and in the Negeb, the land of the Hittites,

  948. the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizites, the Hibites, and the Jebusites.

  949. The King of Jericho one, the King of Ai which

  950. is beside Bethel one, the King of Jerusalem One, the

  951. King of Hebron one, the King of Jarmeath One, the

  952. King of Lakish one, the King of eglon One one,

  953. the King of Gezer one, the King of Deber one,

  954. the King of Geetar one, the King of Horma one,

  955. the King of Arad one, the King of Libnah one,

  956. the King of Adullam one, the King of Maquidah one,

  957. the King of Bethel one, the King of Tapua one,

  958. the King of Hever one, the King of Aphek one,

  959. the King of Lesheron one, the King of Maidon one,

  960. the King of Hazor one, the King of Shimron Mihron one,

  961. the King of akshaff one, the King of teanak one,

  962. the King of Megiddo one, the King of Kedesh one,

  963. the King of Jochnium in Carmel one, the King of

  964. dor In nephathdor one, the King of goyam In Galilee one,

  965. the King of Tirza one. In all, thirty one kings.

  966. Joshua thirteen. Now Joshua was old and advanced in years,

  967. and the Lord said.

  968. To him, you are old and advanced in years, and

  969. there remains yet very much land to possess. This is

  970. the land that yet remains all the regions of the Philistines,

  971. and all those of the Gesturites.

  972. From the Shihor, which is east of Egypt northward to

  973. the boundary of Ekron. It is counted as Canaanite. There

  974. are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza Ashdod Ashkalan, Gath,

  975. and Ekron, and those of the Avin in the south,

  976. all the land of the Canaanites and Miera that belongs

  977. to the Sidonians to Aphek, to the boundary of the

  978. Amorites and the land of the Gebelites. And all Lebanon

  979. toward the sunrise, from Bailgad below Mount Herman to Leebohemoth,

  980. all the inhabitants of hill country from Lebanon to Misropoth Mayem,

  981. even all the Sidonians.

  982. I myself will drive them out from before the people

  983. of Israel. Only allot the land to Israel for an inheritance,

  984. as I have commanded you.

  985. Now.

  986. Therefore, divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes,

  987. and half the tribe of Manassin.

  988. With the other half of the tribe of Manassa. The

  989. Rubenites and the Gadites receive their inheritance which Moses gave

  990. them Beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses, the servant of

  991. the Lord, gave.

  992. Them from a rower which is on the edge of

  993. the valley of the Arnar, and the city that is

  994. in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland

  995. of Medebah, as far as Daiban, and all the cities

  996. of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon,

  997. as far as the boundary of the Ammonites and Gilead,

  998. and the region of the Gesherites and Mayakathites, and all

  999. Mount Herman, and all Basian to Salika, all the kingdom

1000. of og In Basiin who reigned in Ashtaroth, and in Edri.

1001. He alone was left of the remnant of the Repaemi.

1002. These Moses had struck and driven out. Yet the people

1003. of Israel did not drive out the Gesherites or the Mayakathites.

1004. But gesher and Mayakith dwell in the midst of Israel

  1005. to this day.

1006. To the tribe of Levi alone, Moses gave no inheritance.

1007. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel

1008. are their inheritance, as he said to him. And Moses

1009. gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of

1010. Reuben according to their clans.

1011. So their territory was from Aroer, which is on the

1012. edge of the valley of the Arnum, and the city

1013. that is in the middle of the valley, and all

1014. the tableland by Medebah with Heshbon and all its cities

1015. that are in the tableland Daibon and Baymath Bayl and

1016. Beth Bayel Mian and Jahaz and Ketemoth and Mephaiath and

1017. Kuriathaeum and Sibmah and ziith Shar on the hill of

1018. the valley, and Beth Peor and the slopes of Pisgah

1019. and Beth Jeshimav, that is, all the cities of the tableland,

1020. and all the king of Saihan, king of the Amorites,

1021. who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses defeated with the leaders

1022. of Midian Evi and Rekam and Zur and Her and Riba,

1023. the princes of Saihan who lived in the land. Balem,

1024. also the son of Bior, the one who practiced divination,

1025. was killed with the sword by the people of Israel.

1026. Among the rest of their slain.

1027. And the border of the people of Reuben was the

1028. Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the

1029. people of Ruben according to their clans, with their cities

1030. and villages. Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe

1031. of God, to the people of God. According to their clans.

1032. Their territory was Jeser and all the cities of Gilead,

1033. and half the land of the Ammonites to a Rower

1034. which is east of Rabbah, and from Heshbon to Reimath,

1035. Mizpah and Betanem, and from Mehonaeum to the territory of Debur,

1036. and in the valley of beth Harm, Beth Nimra, Succath,

1037. and Zephon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon, king

1038. of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the

1039. lower end of the Sea of Kinnereth eastward beyond the Jordan.

1040. This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according

1041. to their clans, with their cities and villages, and Moses

1042. gave an inheritance to the Havelf tribe of Manassa. It

1043. was allotted to the Have tribe of the people of

1044. Manassa according to their clans.

1045. Their region extended from Mahinaean through all Basin, the whole

1046. kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns

1047. of JayR, which are in Beason sixty cities and half Gilead,

1048. and Ashtaroth and Driaia the cities of the Kingdom of

  1049. Og in Bashi.

1050. These were allotted to the people of Mekir, the son

1051. of Manassa, for the half of the people of Maekir,

1052. according to their clans. These are the inheritances that Moses

1053. distributed in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan east

1054. of Jericho. But to the tribe of Levi, Moses gave

1055. no inheritance. The Lord, God of Israel is their inheritance,

1056. just as he said to them Joshua fourteen.

1057. These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received

1058. in the land of Canaan, which Eliezer the Priest and Joshua,

1059. the son of Nun, and the heads of the father's

1060. houses of the tribes of the people of Israel, gave

1061. them to inherit Their inheritance was by Lot, just as

1062. the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses for

1063. the nine and one half tribes. For Moses had given

1064. an inheritance to the two and one half tribes beyond

1065. the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance

1066. among them. For the people of Joseph were two tribes,

1067. Manassah and Ephraim, and no portion was given to the

1068. Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in

1069. with their pasture lands for their livestock and their substance.

1070. The people of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses.

1071. They allotted the land. Then the people of Judah came

1072. to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb, the son of Jeffes,

1073. the Kennezite, said to him, you.

1074. Know what the Lord said to Moses, the man of

1075. God and Katish Barnia concerning you and me. I was

1076. forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord,

1077. sent me from Katush Barnea to spy out the land.

1078. And I brought him word again as it was in

1079. my heart. But my brothers who went up with me,

1080. made the heart of the people melted. Yet I holy

1081. followed the Lord my God, and Moses swore on that day, saying,

1082. surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall

1083. be an inheritance for you. And your children forever, because

1084. you have wholly followed the Lord, my God. And now behold,

1085. the Lord has kept me alive, just as he said,

1086. these forty five years since the time that.

1087. The Lord spoke this word to Moses while.

1088. Israel walked in the wilderness. And now behold, I am

1089. this day, eighty five years old.

1090. I am still as strong to.

1091. The day as I was in the day that Moses

1092. sent me. My strength now is as my strength was then,

  1093. for war and.

  1094. For going and coming.

1095. So now give me this hill country of which the

1096. Lord spoke on that day. For you heard on that

1097. day how the Anakin were there, with great fortified cities.

1098. It may be that the Lord will be with me

1099. and I shall drive them out, just as the Lord said.

1100. Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb,

1101. the son of Jeffannah, for an inheritance. Therefore, Hebron became

1102. the inheritance of Caleb, the son of Jeffannah, the Kennezite

1103. to this day, because he holy followed the Lord, the

1104. God of Israel. Now the name of Hebron formerly was

1105. Kiriat Arba. Barba was the greatest man among the Anakin,

1106. and the land had rest for war Joshua fifteen.

1107. The allotment for the tribe of the people of Judah,

1108. according to their clans, reached southward to the boundary of Edom,

1109. to the wilderness of Zin at the farthest south, and

1110. their south boundary ran from the end of the Salt

1111. Sea from the bay that faces it, goes out southward

1112. of the ascent of Akrabim, passes along to Zin, and

1113. goes up south of Keidshbarnia, along by Hesrin, up to Adar,

1114. turns about to Karka, passes along to Asman, goes out

1115. by the Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end

1116. at the sea. This shall be your south boundary.

1117. And the east boundary is the Salt Sea to the

1118. mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north

1119. side runs from the bay of the Sea at the

1120. mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary goes up to

1121. beth Hogla and passes along north of beth Araba. And

1122. the boundary goes up to the stone of Bohan, the

1123. son of Reuben. And the boundary goes up to Deber

1124. from the valley of Acor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal,

1125. which is opposite the ascent of Adumim, which is on

1126. the south side of the valley, and the boundary passes

1127. along to the waters of Encemish and ends at Enrogel.

1128. Then the boundary goes up by the valley of the

1129. Son of Hinnim at the southern shoulder of the Jebusite

1130. that is Jerusalem, and the boundary goes up to the

1131. top of the mountain that lies over against the valley

1132. of Hinnam on the west at the northern end of

1133. the valley of Rephaem. Then the boundary extends from the

1134. top of the mountain to the spring of the waters

1135. of Nettoa and from there to the cities of Mount Ephron.

1136. Then the boundary bends around to Bayla that is Kyriath Jirim,

1137. and the boundary circles west of Beyla to Mount Seir,

1138. passes along to the northern shoulder of Mount Jerrem that

1139. is Kessalon, and goes down to Beth Shemish and passes

1140. along by Timna. The boundary goes out to the shoulder

1141. of the hill north of Ekron. Then the boundary bends

1142. around to Chikaran and passes along to Mount Bayla and

1143. go out to Jabniel. Then the boundary comes to an

1144. end at the sea, and the west boundary was the

1145. Great Sea with its coastline. This is the boundary around

1146. the people of Judah according to their clans. According to

1147. the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, he gave to Caleb,

1148. the son of Jeffunah, a portion among the people of Judah.

1149. Kiriath Arba, that is, hebron Arba was the father of Anak.

1150. And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak,

1151. Shishai and a Hymen and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.

1152. And he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debar.

1153. Now the name of Deber formerly was Kiriath Sefr.

1154. And Caleb said, whoever strikes Kiriath Sefr and captures it

1155. to him, will I give Axa my daughter as wife.

1156. And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb,

1157. captured it, and he gave him Axa his daughter as wife.

1158. When she came to him, she urged him to ask

1159. her father for a field, and she got off her donkey,

1160. and Caleb said to her, what do you want? She

1161. said to him, give me a blessing.

1162. Since you have given me the land of the nageb

1163. give me also springs of water.

1164. And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

1165. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the people

1166. of Judah, according to their clans. The city's belonging to

1167. the tribe of the people of Judah. In the extreme

1168. south toward the boundary of Edom were Kabzil, ed Jaeger, Kaina, Demona, Adida, Kedesh,

1169. Hazor Ishnan Zith, Telim, bieloth Hazor, Hedatta, kirioth Hesrin, that is,

1170. hazor AmAm Shima, Molada, Hazar Gada, Heshmann, Beth Pilit Hazar, Shul,

1171. be Orshiba, Busiothiah, Beyla, i am Issim, Eltolad Keesl, Horma,

1172. Ziklag Madmana, Sansana, Lebya, chilhim Ain and Rimen in all

1173. twenty nine cities with their villages, and in the lowland

1174. Eshtel Zora, Ashna, Zanoah and Ganem, Tapua, Enim, Jarmuth, Adulham, Soko, Azeka,

1175. schey A, ram Adithaiam, Gadeira, Gideira, Thiam, fourteen cities with

1176. their villages Xenon, Hadasha, Migdelgad, Dillian, Mizpah, Jakhtheel, Lakish Boskath, Eglen, Cabin, Lamem, Kittlish, Gadeira, Beth, Dagon,

1177. Nayema and Mikidah. Sixteen cities with their villages, Libna, Ether,

1178. Asian Iftha, Ashna, Nisib, Keilah, Azib and Mauritia. Nine cities

1179. with their villages, Ekron with its towns and its villages.

1180. From Ekron to the sea, all that were by the

1181. side of Ashdod with their villages Ashdod, its towns and

1182. its villages, Gaza, its towns and its villages to the

1183. Brook of Egypt and the Great Sea with its coastline.

1184. And in the hill country Shamer, Jatter, Soko, Dana, kirriath

1185. Sana that is, deber Anab, Eshtimo, Anim, Goshen, Holon and Gilo.

1186. Eleven cities with their villages, Arab, Dumah, Ishan, Jaanem, Beth, Tapua, Afika, Humta,

1187. Kiriath Arba that is, Hevron and Zayre. Nine cities with

1188. their villages, man Carmel, Zif, Jeddah, Jezreel, Jakdim, Zenoah, Cain,

1189. Gibeah and Timna, ten cities with their villages, Halhull, Bethzur, Geir, Meyerath,

1190. Bethyanath and Altacon. Six cities with their villages. Kiriath Vale,

1191. that is Kiriath, Jiorim and Rabbah two cities with their

1192. villages in the wilderness, beth Araba, Midden, Sakaika, Nibshan, the

1193. city of Salt and Angeddei six cities with their villages.

1194. But the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the people of Judah,

1195. could not drive out, so the Jebusites dwell with the

1196. people of Judah at Jerusalem to this day. Joshua sixteen

1197. the allotment of the people of Joseph went from the

1198. Jordan by Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho into

1199. the wilderness, going up from Jericho into the hill country

1200. to Bethel, then going from Bethel to Luz, it passes

1201. along to Atarath, the territory of the Archives. Then it

1202. goes down westward to the territory of the Japhlatites as

1203. far as the territory of lower Bethhoran, then to Gezer,

1204. and it ends at the sea.

1205. The people of Joseph, Manassa and Ephraim receive their inheritance.

1206. The territory of the people of Ephraim by their clans

  1207. was as followers.

1208. The boundary of their inheritance on the east was Adarath

1209. Adder as far as upper Bethhoran, and the boundary goes

1210. from there to the sea. On the north is Mcmathath.

1211. Then on the east the boundary turns around toward Tayanath

1212. Shiloh and passes along beyond it on the east to Genoa.

1213. Then it goes down from Genoa to Adarath and to

1214. Nehera and touches Jericho, ending at the Jordan. From Tabua,

1215. the boundary goes westward to the brook cana and ends

1216. at the sea. Such as the inheritance of the tribe

1217. of the people of Ephraim by their clans, together with

1218. the towns that were set apart for the people of

1219. Ephraim within the inheritance of the Menassites all those towns

1220. with their villages. However, they did not drive out the

1221. Canaanites who lived in Gizer. So the Canaanites have lived

1222. in the midst of Ephraim to this day, but have

1223. been made to do forced labor Joshua seventeen. Then allotment

1224. was made to the people of Manassa, for he was

1225. the first born of Joseph. To make here the first

1226. born of Manassa, the father of Gilead, were allotted Gilead

1227. and Bashen because he was a man of war. And

1228. allotments were made to the rest of the people of Manassa.

1229. By their clans a bay Eeser, helik Asriel, Shechem, Heifer,

1230. and Shemaidaid. These were the male descendants of Manassa, the

1231. son of Joseph. By their clans. Now zelophehad the son

1232. of Heifer, son of Gilead, son of Maker, son of Manassa,

1233. had no sons, but only daughters. And these are the

1234. names of his daughters, Mala, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirza.

1235. They approached Eliezer the priest and Joshua, the son of

1236. Nun and the leaders, and said, the.

1237. Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with

  1238. our brothers.

1239. So according to the mouth of the Lord, he gave

1240. them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. Thus

1241. there fell to Manassa ten portions, besides the land of

1242. Gilead and Basin, which is on the other side of

1243. the Jordan. Because the daughters of Manassa received an inheritance

1244. along with his sons, the land of Gilead was allotted

1245. to the rest of the people of Manassa. The territory

1246. of Manassa reached from Asher to Mcmathath, which is east

1247. of Shechem. Then the boundary goes along southward to the

1248. inhabitants of Intapua. The land of Tapua belonged to Manassa,

1249. but the town of Tapua on the boundary of Manassa

1250. belonged to the people of Ephraim. Then the boundary went

1251. down to the Brook Cana. These cities to the south

1252. of the among the cities of Manassa belonged to Ephraim.

1253. Then the boundary of Manassa goes on the north side

1254. of the brook and ends at the sea, the land

1255. to the south being Ephraim's and that to the north

1256. being Manassas, with the sea forming its boundary. On the

1257. north Asher is reached and on the east Isakar. Also

1258. in Isakar and in Asher, Manassa had Bethshean and its villages,

1259. an Iblium and its villages, and the inhabitants of Door

1260. and its villages, and the inhabitants of Endor and its villages,

1261. and the inhabitants of Tayanak and its villages, and the

1262. inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages. The third is Nephath.

1263. Yet the people of Manassa could not take possession of

1264. those cities, but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. Now,

1265. when the people of Israel grew strong, they put the

1266. Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.

1267. Then the people of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, why

1268. have you given me but one lot in one portion

1269. as an inheritance, although I am a numerous people, since

1270. all the long the Lord has blessed me. And Joshua

  1271. said to them.

1272. If you are a numerous people, go up by yourselves

1273. through the forest, and they're clear ground for yourselves in

1274. the land of the Parazites and the Rephaem, since the

1275. hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.

1276. The people of Joseph said that the hill country is

1277. not enough for us. Yet all the Canaanites who dwell

1278. in the plain have chariots of iron, both those in

1279. Bethshean and its villages, and those in the valley of Jezreel.

1280. Then Joshua said to the House of Joseph, to Ephraim

  1281. and Manassa.

1282. You are a numerous people and have great power. You

1283. shall not have one allotment only. But the hill country

1284. shall be yours. For though it is a forest, you

1285. shall clear it and possess it to its farthest borders.

1286. For you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have

1287. chariots of iron, and though they are strong.

1288. Joshua eighteen. Then the whole congregation of the people of

1289. Israel assembled at Shiloh and set up the tent of meeting.

1290. There the land lay subdued before them. There remained among

1291. the people of Israel seven tribes whose inheritance had not

1292. yet been apportioned. So Joshua said to the people of Israel.

1293. How long will you put off going in to take

1294. possession of the land which the Lord, the God of

1295. your fathers, has given you. You provide three men from

1296. each tribe, and I will send them out, that they

1297. may set out and go up and down the land.

1298. They shall write a description of it with a view

1299. to their inheritances, and then come to me. They shall

1300. divide it into seven portions. Judah shall continue in his

1301. territory on the south, and the House of Joseph shall

1302. continue in their territory on the north. And you shall

1303. describe the land in seven divisions, and bring the description

1304. here to me, and I will care lots for you

1305. here before the Lord, our God. The Levites have no

1306. portion among you, for the priesthood of the Lord is

1307. their heritage and God and Reuben and half the tribe

1308. of Nassa have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan eastward,

1309. which Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave them them.

1310. So the men arose and went, and Joshua charged those

1311. who went to write the description of the land, saying,

  1312. go up.

1313. And down in the land and write a description, and

1314. return to me, and I will cast lots for you

1315. here before the Lord in shy LiH.

1316. So the men went and passed up and down in

1317. the land and wrote in a book a description of

1318. it by towns in seven divisions. Then they came to Joshua,

1319. to the camp at Shiloh, and Joshua cast lots for

1320. them in Shiloh before the Lord, and there Joshua apportioned

1321. the land to the people of Israel, to each his portion.

1322. The lot of the tribe of the people of Benjamin,

1323. according to its clans, came up, and the territory allotted

1324. to it fell between the people of Judah and the

  1325. people of Joseph.

1326. On the north side, their boundary began at the Jordan.

1327. Then the boundary goes up to the shoulder north of Jericho,

1328. then up through the hill country westward, and it ends

1329. at the wilderness of Bethaven. From there, the boundary passes

1330. along southward in the direction of LUs to the shoulder

1331. of LUs, that is Bethel. Then the boundary goes down

1332. to adarath Adar on the mountain that lies south of

1333. lower beth Houron. Then the boundary goes in another direction,

1334. turning on the western side southward from the mountain that

1335. lies to the south opposite beth Houron, and it ends

1336. at Kyriath Bayal, that is Kyriathjiorim, a city belonging to

1337. the people of Judah. This forms the western side, and

1338. the southern side begins at the outskirts of Kyriathjirem and

1339. the boundary goes from there to Ephron, to the spring

1340. of the waters of Neftoa. Then the boundary goes down

1341. to the border of the mountain that overlooks the valley

1342. of the Sun of Hinham, which is at the north

1343. end of the valley of Rephaem. And it then goes

1344. down the valley of Hinnam, south of the shoulder of

1345. the Jebusites, and downward to Rogo. Then it bends in

1346. a northerly direction, going on to Enshemish, and from there

1347. it goes to Goliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adama.

1348. Then it goes down to the stone of Bohan, the

1349. son of Reuben, and passing on to the north of

1350. the shoulder of beth Araba. It goes down to the Araba.

1351. Then the boundary passes on to the north of the

1352. shoulder of Beth Hogla, and the boundary ends at the

1353. northern bay of the Salt Sea at the south end

1354. of the Jordan. This is the southern border. The Jordan

1355. forms its boundary on the eastern side.

1356. This is the inheritance of the people of Benjamin, according

1357. to their clans. Boundary by boundary all around.

1358. Now the cities of the tribe of the people of

1359. Benjamin according to their clans were Jericho, Beth, Hogla, Emik, Keyses, Beth, Araba,

1377. of Simeon. According to their clans.

1378. The inheritance of the people of Simon formed part of

1379. the territory of the people of Judah. Because the portion

1380. of the people of Judah was too large for them.

1381. The people of Simeon obtained an inheritance. In the midst

  1382. of their inheritance.

1383. The third lot came up for the people of Zebulun

1384. according to their clans, and the territory of their inheritance

1439. the people of Dan went up and fought against Lesham,

1440. and after capturing it and striking it with the sword,

1441. they took possession of it and settled in it, calling

1442. Lesham Dan. After the name of Dan, their ancestor.

1443. This is the inheritance the tribe of the people of Dan,

1444. according to their clans, these cities with their villages.

1445. When they had finished distributing the several territories of the

1446. land as inheritances, the people of Israel gave an inheritance

1447. among them to Joshua, the son of Nun, by command

1448. of the Lae Lord. They gave him the city that

1449. he asked tim Natsirah in the hill country of Ephraim,

1450. and he rebuilt the city and settled in it. These

1451. are the inheritances that Eliezer the Priest and Joshua, the

1452. son of Nun, and the heads of the father's houses

1453. of the tribes of the people of Israel distributed by

1454. lot at Shiloh before the Lord at the entrance of

1455. the tent of meeting, so they finished dividing the land

1456. Joshua twenty. Then the Lord said to Joshua, say.

1457. To the people of Israel, appoint the cities of refuge

1458. of which I spoke to you through Moses, that the

1459. man slayer who strikes any person without intent or unknowingly

1460. may flee there. They shall be for you a refuge

1461. from the Avenger of Blood. He shall flee to one

1462. of these cities, and shall stand at the entrance at

1463. the gate of the city and ex explain his case

1464. to the elders of that city. Then they shall take

1465. him into the city and give him a place, and

1466. he shall remain with them.

1467. And if the Avenger of Blood pursues him, they shall

1468. not give up the manslayer into his hand, because he

1469. struck his neighbor unknowingly and did not hate him in

1470. the past. And he shall remain in that city until

1471. he has stood before the congregation for judgment, until the

1472. death of him who is high priest at the time.

1473. Then the man slayer may return to his own town

1474. and his own home, to the town from which he fled.

1475. So they set apart Ketish in Galibe in the hill

1476. country of Naphthali, and Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim,

1477. and kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron in the hill country

1478. of Judah and beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. They

1479. appointed Bezer in the wilderness on the table land from

1480. the tribe of Reuben, and Raymuth in Gilead from the

1481. tribe of Gad and Golan in basion from the tribe

1482. of Manassa. These were the cities designated for all the

1483. people of Israel and for the stranger sojourning among them,

1484. that anyone who killed a person without intent could flee there,

1485. so that he might not die by the hand of

1486. the avenger of blood till he stood before the congregation

1487. Joshua twenty one. Then the heads of the father's houses

1488. of the Levites came to Eliezer the Priest, and to Joshua,

1489. the son of Nun, and to the heads of the

1490. father's houses of the tribes of the people of Israel.

1491. And they said to them, at Shiloh in the land

  1492. of Canaan, the.

1493. Lord commanded through Moses that we'd be given cities to

1494. dwell in, along with their pasture lands for our livestock them.

1495. So, by command of the Lord, the people of Israel

1496. gave to the Levites the following cities and pasture lands

1497. out of their inheritance. The lot came out for the

1498. clans of the Coathites. So those Levites who were descendants

1499. of Erin the priest received by lot from the tribes

1500. of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin thirteen cities and The rest

1501. of the Coethites received by lot from the clans of

1502. the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan, and

1503. the half tribe of Manassa ten cities. The Gershanites received

1504. by lot from the clans of the tribe of Issachar,

1505. from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtalai,

1506. and from the half tribe of Manassa in Basin thirteen cities.

1507. The Mirariites, according to their clans, received from the tribe

1508. of Reuben, the tribe of Gad, and the tribe of

1509. Zebulun twelve cities. These cities and their pasture lands the

1510. people of Israel gave by lot to the Levites, as

1511. the Lord had commanded through Moses, out of the tribe

1512. of the people of Judah and the tribe of the

1513. people of Simon, they gave the following cities mentioned by name,

1514. which went to the descendants of Erin, one of the

1515. clans of the Coathites, who belonged to the people of Levi.

1516. Since the lot fell to them first, they gave them

1517. kiriath Arba Arba, being the father of Anak, that is,

1518. Hebron in the hill country of Judah, along with the

1519. pasture lands round it. But the fields of the city

1520. and its villages had been given to Caleb, the son

1521. of Jafunah as his possession, And to the descendants of

1522. Erin the priest. They gave Hebron, the city of refuge

1523. for the Manslayer, with its pasture lands, Libna with its

1524. pasture lands, Jatter with its pasture lands, Estemoa with its

1525. pasture lands, Holan with its pasture lands, Deber with its

1526. pasture lands, Ain with its pasture lands, Jata with its

1527. pasture lands, Bethcemish with its pasture lands. Nine cities. Out

1528. of these two tribes, then out of the tribe of Benjamin,

1529. Gibeon with its pasture lands, Giba with its pasture lands,

1530. Anathof with its pasture lands, and Almon with its pasture lands,

1531. four cities. The cities of the descendants of Erin the

1532. priests were in all thirteen cities with their pasture lands.

1533. As to the rest of the Coethites, belonging to the

1534. Coothite clans of the Levites, the cities allotted to them

1535. were out of the tribe of Ephraeim. To them were

1536. given Shechha, the city of refuge for the manslayer with

1537. its pasture lands in the hill country of Iphraeimri Gezer

1538. with its pasture lands, Gibzaem with its pasture lands, Bethhoron

1539. with its pasture lands four cities, and out of the

1540. tribe of dan Heltica with its pasture lands, Gibbethon with

1541. its pasture lands, Agelon with its pasture lands, Gathrimen with

1542. its pasture lands four cities, and out of the half

1543. tribe of Manassa Tayanak with its pasture lands, and Gathrimen

1544. with its pasture lands two cities. The cities of the

1545. clans of the rest of the Cooethites were ten in

1546. all with their pasture lands, and to the Gershonites, one

1547. of the clans of the Levites were given out of

1548. the half tribe of Manassas Golan in Basiin with its

1549. pasture lands, the city of refuge for the manslayer and

1550. Biesta with its pasture lands two cities, and out of

1551. the tribe of Issachar Kishian with its pasture lands, Dabarath

1552. with its pasture lands, Jarmath with its pasture lands, and

1553. Ganon with its pasture lands four cities and out of

1554. the tribe of Asher Mishael with its pasture lands, Abden

1555. with its pasture lands, Helkath with its pasture lands, and

1556. Rehap with its pasture lands four cities, and out of

1557. the tribe of Naphtalai kedish In Galilee with its pasture lands,

1558. the city of refuge for the manslayer, Hammethdor with its

1559. pasture lands, and Kartan with its pasture lands three cities.

1560. The cities of the several clans of the Gershonites were

1561. in all thirteen cities with their pasture lands, and to

1562. the rest of the Levites, the Mirrorite clans were given

1563. out of the tribe of Zebulun Jochnium with its pasture lands,

1564. Karta with its pasture lands, Dimnah with its pasture lands,

1565. Nehalal with its pasture lands four cities, and out of

1566. the tribe of Reuben Beizer with its pasture lands, Jayhas

1567. with its pasture lands, Ketamoth with its pasture lands, and

1568. Mephaea with its pasture lands four cities. And out of

1569. the tribe of gad Raymoth and Gilead with its pasture lands,

1570. the city of refuge for the man slayer, Mahinaem with

1571. its pasture lands, Heshbon with its pasture lands, Jeser with

1572. its pasture lands. Four cities in all, as for the

1573. cities of the several Mirrorrite clans, that is, the remainder

1574. of the clans of the Levites, those allotted to them

1575. were in all twelve cities. The cities of the Levites

1576. in the midst of the possession of the people of

1577. Israel were in all forty eight cities with their pasture lands.

1578. These cities each had its pasture lands around it. So

1579. it was with all these cities. Thus the Lord gave

1580. to Israel all the land that he swore to give

1581. to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and

1582. they settled there, and the Lord gave them rest on

1583. every side, just as he had sworn to their fathers.

1584. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for

1585. the Lord had given all their enemies into their hands.

1586. Not one word of all the good promises that the

1587. Lord had made to the House of Israel had failed.

1588. All came to pass Joshua twenty two. At that time,

1589. Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half

1590. tribe of Manassas, and said to them.

1591. You have kept all that Moses, the servant of the Lord,

1592. commanded you, and have obeyed my voice and all that

1593. I have commanded you. You have not forsaken your brothers

1594. these many days down to this day, but have been

1595. careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God.

1596. And now the Lord your God has given rest to

1597. your brothers as he promised them. Therefore, turn and go

1598. to your tents in the land where your possession lies,

1599. which Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave you on

1600. the other side of the Georgian.

  1601. Only be very.

1602. Careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses,

1603. the servant of the Lord, commanded you. To love the

1604. Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways,

1605. and to keep his commandments, and to cling to him,

1606. and to serve him with all your heart and with

  1607. all your soul.

1608. So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they

1609. went to their tenths. Now, to the one half of

1610. the tribe of Nassa, Moses had given a possession in Bash,

1611. but to the other half Joshua had given a possession

1612. Beside their brothers in the land west of the Jordan.

1613. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and

1614. blessed them, he said to them, go.

1615. Back to your tents with much wealth, and with very

1616. much livestock, the silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with

1617. much clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.

  1618. So the people of.

1619. Reuben and the people of Gad, and the half tribe

1620. of Nassa returned home, parting from the people of Israel

1621. at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to

1622. go to the land of Gilead, their own land of

1623. which they had possessed themselves by command of the Lord

1624. through Moses. And when they came to the region of

1625. the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the

1626. people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the

1627. half tribe of Manassa built there and altared by the Jordan,

1628. an altar of imposing size. And the people of Israel

  1629. heard it, said.

1630. Behold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad

1631. and the half tribe of Manassa have built the altar

1632. at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the

1633. region about the Jordan on the side that belongs to

  1634. the people of Israel.

1635. And when the people of Israel heard of it, the

1636. whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh

1637. to make war against them. Then the people of Israel

1638. sent to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad,

1639. and the half tribe of Manassa in the land of Gilead, Phineas,

1640. the son of Eliezer the Priest, and with him ten chiefs,

1641. one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every

1642. one of them the head of a family among the

1643. clans of Israel. And they came to the people of Reuben,

1644. the people of God, and the half tribe of Manassa

1645. in the land of Gilead.

1646. And they said to them, thus says the whole congregation

1647. of the Lord, what is this breach of faith that

1648. you have committed against the God of Israel in turning

1649. away this day from following the Lord by building yourselves

1650. an altar this day in rebellion against the Lord?

1651. Have we not had enough of the sin at pre

1652. from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and

1653. for which there came a plague upon the congregation of

1654. the Lord, that you too must turn away this day

1655. from following the Lord. And if you too rebel against

1656. the Lord today, then tomorrow he will be angry with

1657. the whole congregation of Israel.

1658. But now, if the land of your possession is unclean,

1659. pass over into the Lord's land, where the Lord's tabernacle stands,

1660. and take for yourselves a possession among us.

  1661. Only.

1662. Do not rebel against the Lord or make us as

1663. rebels by building for yourselves an altar other than the

1664. of the Lord. Our God did not aChn the son

1665. of Syrah, break faith in the matter of the devoted things,

1666. and rant fell upon all the congregation.

1667. Of Israel, and he did not perish alone.

  1668. For his iniquity.

1669. Then the people of Reuben, the people of God, and

1670. the half tribe of Manassa, said an answer to the

1671. heads of the families of Israel.

1672. The Mighty One God, the Lord, the mighty one God,

1673. the Lord he knows, And let Israel itself know if

1674. it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against

  1675. the Lord.

1676. Do not spare us today for building an altar to

1677. turn away from following the Lord, or if we did so,

1678. to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings

1679. on it, may the Lord himself take vengeance.

1680. No, but we did it from fear that in time

1681. to come, your children might say to our children, what

1682. have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel.

1683. For the Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between

1684. us and you, you people of Reuben and people of Goad,

1685. you have no portion in the Lord, so your children

1686. might make our children cease to worship the Lord. Therefore

1687. we said, let us now build an altar, not for

1688. burnt offering, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness

1689. between us and you, and between our generations after us,

1690. that we do perform the service of the Lord in

1691. his presence, with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings, so.

1692. Your children will not say to our children in time

1693. to come, you have no portion in the Lord.

1694. And we thought, if this should be said to us

1695. or to our descendants in time to come, we should say,

1696. behold the copy of the altar of the Lord, which

1697. our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice,

1698. but to be a witness between.

  1699. Us and you.

1700. Far be it from us that we should rebel against

1701. the Lord, and turn away this day from following the

1702. Lord by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering,

1703. or sacrifice other than the altar of the Lord, our God,

1704. that stands before his tabernacle.

1705. When Phineas the Priest and the chiefs of the congregation,

1706. the heads of the families of Israel, who were with him,

1707. heard the words that the people of Reuben and the

1708. people of God and the people of Manassa spoke, it

1709. was good in their eyes. And Phineas, the son of

1710. Eliezer the Priest said, to the people of Reuben and

1711. the people of God and the people of Manassa.

1712. Today we know that the Lord is in our midst

1713. because you have not committed this breach of faith against

1714. the Lord. Now you have delivered the people of Israel

1715. from the hand of the Lord.

1716. Then Phineas the son of Eliezer, the Priest and the

1717. chiefs returned from the people of Reuben and the people

1718. of God in the land of Gileon to the land

1719. of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back

1720. word to them. And the report was good in the

1721. eyes of the people of Israel, and the people of

1722. Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war

1723. against them to destroy the land where the people of

1724. Reuben and the people of God were settled. The people

1725. of Reuben and the People of God called the Altar witness,

1726. for they said, it is a witness between us that

1727. the Lord is God. Joshua twenty three. A long time afterward,

1728. when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all

1729. their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced

1730. in years, Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads,

1731. its judges and officers, and said to them.

1732. I am now old and well advanced in years, and

1733. you have seen all that the Lord your God has

1734. done to all these nations for your sake. For it

1735. is the Lord your God who has fought for you. Behold,

1736. I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your

1737. tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations

1738. that I have already cut off from the Jordan to

1739. the Great Sea in the west. The Lord your God

1740. will push them back before you and drive them out

1741. of your sight, and you shall possess their land, just

1742. as the Lord your God promised you therefore, be very

1743. strong to keep and to do all that is written

1744. in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside

1745. from it, neither to the right hand nor to the left.

1746. That you may not mix with these nations remaining among you,

1747. or make mention of the names of their gods, or

1748. swear by them, or serve them, or bow down to them.

1749. But you shall cling to the Lord your God, just

1750. as you have done to this day. For the Lord

1751. has driven out before you great and strong nations. And

1752. as for you, no man has been able to stand

1753. before you to this day. One man of you puts

1754. to flight a thousand. Since it is the Lord your

1755. God who fights for you, just as he promised you.

1756. Be very careful therefore to love the Lord your God.

1757. Or if you turn back and cling to the remnant

1758. of these nations remaining among you, and make marriages with them,

1759. so that you associate with them and they with you,

1760. know for certain that the Lord your God will no

1761. longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall

1762. be a snare and a trap for you, a whip

1763. on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you

1764. perish from off this good ground. That the Lord your

1765. God has given you you. And now I am about

1766. to go the way of all the earth. And you

1767. know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that

1768. not one word has failed. Of all the good things

1769. that the Lord your God promised concerning you all have

1770. come to pass for you. Not one of them has failed.

1771. But just as all the good things that the Lord

1772. your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you,

1773. so the Lord will bring upon you all the evil

1774. things until he has destroyed you from off this good

1775. land that the Lord your God has given you. If

1776. you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which

1777. he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and

1778. bow down to them, then the anger of the Lord

1779. will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly

1780. from off the good land that He has given to you.

1781. Joshua twenty four. Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel

1782. to Shekel and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges,

1783. and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God.

1784. And Joshua said to all the people.

1785. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel. Long ago

1786. your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates Terah, the father of

1787. Abraham and of Nahor, and they served other gods. Then

1788. I took your father Abraham from beyond the river and

1789. led him through all the land of Canaan, and made

1790. his offspring many. I gave him Isaac, and to Isaac

1791. I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau the

1792. hill country of Sir to possess. But Jacob and his

1793. children went down to Egypt, and I sent Moses and Aaron,

1794. and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the

1795. midst of it. And afterward I brought you out, and

1796. I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came

1797. to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued your fathers with

1798. chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. When they cried

1799. to the Lord, he put darkness between you and the

1800. Egyptians and made the sea come upon them and covered them.

1801. And your eyes saw what I did in Egypt, and

1802. you lived in the wilderness a long time. Then I

1803. brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived

1804. on the other side of the Jordan. They fought with you,

1805. and I gave them into your hand, and you took

1806. possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you.

1807. Then Bailak, the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose

1808. and fought against Israel. And he sent and invited Balim,

1809. the son of Bior, to curse you. But I would

1810. not listen to Balim. Indeed, he blessed you. So I

1811. delivered you out of his hand. And you went over

1812. the Jordan and came to Jericho. And the leaders of

1813. Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Parazites,

1814. the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Gergorshites, the Hipbites, and the Jebusites.

1815. And I gave them into your hand, and I sent

1816. the hornet before you, which drove them out before you,

1817. the two kings of the Amorites. It was not by

1818. your sword or by your bow. I gave you a

1819. land on which you had not labored, and cities that

1820. you had not built, and you dwell in them. You

1821. eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you

1822. did not plant. Therefore, fear the Lord and serve him

1823. in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that

1824. your fathers served beyond the river and in Egypt, and

1825. serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your

1826. eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you

1827. will serve, whether the gods your father served in the

1828. region beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites,

1829. and whose land you dwell. But as for me and

1830. my house, we will serve the Lord.

1831. Then the people answered, far be it from us that

1832. we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods.

1833. For it is the Lord, our God, who brought us

1834. and our fathers up from the land of Egypt out

1835. of the house of Slavi, and who did those great

1836. signs in our sight and preserved us in all the

1837. way that we went, and among all the peoples through

1838. whom we passed, and the Lord drove out before us

1839. all the peoples the Amuri who.

1840. Lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for.

  1841. He is our God.

1842. But Joshua said to the people.

1843. You are not able to serve the Lord, for he

1844. is a holy god. He is a jealous god. You

1845. will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you

1846. forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will

1847. turn and do you harm and consume you after having

  1848. done you good.

1849. And the people said to Joshua, no, but we will

1850. serve the Lord. Then Joshua said to the people.

1851. You are witnesses against yourselves, that you have chosen the

  1852. Lord to serve him.

1853. And they said, we are witnesses.

1854. He said, and put away the foreign gods that are

1855. among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the

  1856. God of Israel.

1857. And the people said to Joshua, the Lord, our god,

1858. we will serve, and his life we re away. So

1859. Joshua made a covenant with the people that day and

1860. put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem.

1861. And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the

1862. Law of God. And he took a large stone and

1863. set it up there under the terebinth that was by

1864. the sanctuary of the Lord. And Joshua said to all

  1865. the people, behold.

1866. This stone shall be a witness against us, for it

1867. has heard all the words of the Lord that he

1868. spoke to us. Therefore it shall be a witness against you,

1869. lest you deal falsely with your God.

1870. So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance.

1871. After these things Joshua, the son of None, the servant

1872. of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old,

1873. and they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnathsirah,

1874. which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of

1875. the mountain of Gayash. Israel served the Lord all the

1876. days of Joshua and all the days of the elders,

1877. who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that

1878. the Lord did for Israel. As for the bones of Joseph,

1879. which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they

1880. buried them at Shechem in the peace of land that

1881. Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem,

1882. for a hundred pieces of money. It became an inheritance

1883. of the descendants of Joseph. And Eliezer, the son of Aaron, died,

1884. and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of phineas

1885. his son, which had been given him in the hill

  1886. country of Ephraim.
