  717. But he took his stand in the midst of the

  718. plot and defended it and killed the Philistines, and the

  719. Lord saved them by a great victory. Three of the

  720. thirty chief men went down to the rock to David

  721. at the Cave of Adullam. When the army of Philistines

  722. was encamped in the valley of Rephaem. David was then

  723. in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistine was

  724. then at Bethlehem. And David said longingly.

  725. Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from

  726. the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate.

  727. Then the three Mighty Men broke through the camp of

  728. the Philistines and drew water out of the well of

  729. Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and

  730. brought it to David. But David would not drink it.

  731. He poured it out to the Lord and said, far.

  732. Be it from me. Before my God that I should

  733. do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men,

  734. for at the risk of their lives they brought it.

  735. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the

  736. Three mighty men. Now Abishi, the brother of Joab, was

  737. chief of the thirty, and he wielded his spear against

  738. three hundred men and killed them and won a name

  739. beside the three. He was the most renowned of the thirty,

  740. and became their commander. But he did not attain to

  741. the three. And Benea, the son of Jehoiadah, was a

  742. valiant man of capsule, a doer of great deeds. He

  743. struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down

  744. and struck down a lion in a pit on a

  745. day when snow had fallen. And he struck down an Egyptian,

  746. a man of great stature five cubits tall. The Egyptian

  747. had in his hand a spear like a weaver's beam,

  748. but Benea went down to him with a staff and

  749. snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and killed

  750. him with his own spear. These things did Benea, the

  751. son of Jehoyda, and won a name beside the three

  752. Mighty Men. He was renowned among the thirty, but he

  753. did not attain to the three, and David set him

  754. over his bodyguard.

  755. The Mighty men were Assahl, the brother of joab Elhanan,

  756. the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, Seamuth of Herod Hila's,

  757. the Pelonite Ira, the son of Ikeish of Takoa, a

  758. by Ezer of Anathoth, Sibeki, the Hushathite Islai, the Ahoe

  759. height Maeharai of Natopha Helid the son of Beyona of

  760. natoa Itthi, the son of Raibi of Gibeah, of the

  761. people of Benjamin, Baneah of Pirathon, Huri of the Brooks

  762. of gaysh Abiel the Arbadite Asthmaveth of baharam Eliabah, the

  763. Sylvanite Hasham, the Guaisanite Jonathan, the son of Shagi, the

  764. Heraite Ahiam the son of Sekhar, the Herarite Elifel the

  765. son of or Heefer, the Makirathite Ahijah, the Pelonite Hesro

  766. of Carmel, Nearai the son of Zbai, Joel the brother

  767. of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagrai Zelik, the Ammonite,

  768. Neharai of Berroth, the armor bearer of Joab, the son

  769. of zerujah Ira, the Hrit Gareb, Thehrite Uriah, the Hittite

  770. Zebad the son of Alai Adana, the son of Shaizah

  771. the Rubenite, a leader of the Rubenites, and thirty with him, Hanan,

  772. the son of Mayeka, and Joshafat, the myth Nite Aziah,

  773. the Astorithite, Seama and Jil, the sons of Hotham, the Aroorite,

  774. Jadeo the son of Shimrai and Joha his brother, the Taizite,

  775. Elile the Mehabite, and Jerebi and Joshivah, the sons of

  776. al Nam and Ihma, the Moabite, Elile and Obed and

  777. Jayasiel the Meserbaite.

  778. First Chronicles twelve. Now these are the men who came

  779. to David at Ziklag, while he could not move about

  780. freely because of Saul the son of kish And. They

  781. were among the mighty men who helped him in war.

  782. They were bowman and could shoot arrows and sling stone

  783. with either the right or the left hand. They were Benjaminites,

  784. Saul's Kinsman.

  785. The chief was Ahiizer, then joe Ash, both sons of

  786. Shemyah of Gibeah, also Jiziel and Peeland, the sons of

  787. Asthmabeth Verica, j hu of Anathoth Ishmeah of Gibeon, a

  788. mighty man among the thirty and a leader over the thirty. Jeremiah,

  789. Jehezeel Johanan, Josephad of Gadeira, Eluzai, Jeremath, the Eliah, Sheemariah, Shephatiah,

  790. the Herupite, el Keina, Ishiah, Azirel, Joezer and Joshobeam, the

  791. korrah Heites, and joe Elah and Zebediah, the sons of

  792. Jerohem of Gedor.

  793. From the Gadites there went over to David at the

  794. stronghold in the wilderness, mighty and experienced warriors, expert with

  795. sealed and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions,

  796. and who were swift as gazelle's upon the mountains. Easer

  797. the Chief, Obadiah, second, Eliab, third, Mishmnah, fourth, Jeremiah, fifth, Attai, sixth,

  798. Elile seventh, Johanan, eighth, el Zabad ninth, Jeremiah tenth, Macbanni eleventh.

  799. These Gaddites were officers of the army. The least was

  800. a match for one hundred men, and the greatest for

  801. a thousand. These are the men who crossed the Jordan

  802. in the first month, when it was overflowing all its banks,

  803. and put to flight all those in the valleys to

  804. the east and to the west. And some of the

  805. men of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David.

  806. David went out to meet them and said to them, if.

  807. You have come to me in friendship to help me,

  808. my heart will be joined to you. But if to

  809. betray me to my adversaries, although there is no wrong

  810. in my hands, then may the God of our fathers

  811. see rebuke you.

  812. Then the spirit clothed a Masi, chief of the thirty,

  813. and he said.

  814. We are yours, oh David, and with you, oh son

  815. of Jesse, peace peace to you, at peace to your helpers,

  816. for your God helps you.

  817. Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.

  818. Some of the men of Manassa deserted to David when

  819. he came with the Philistines for the battle against Saul.

  820. Yet he did not help them, for the rulers of

  821. the Philistines took counsel and sent him away, saying, add

  822. peril to our heads. He will desert to his master Saul.

  823. As he went to Ziklag, these men of Manassa deserted

  824. to him. aDNA, josephad jedaiel Michael, josephad Elihu, and Zilithi,

  825. chiefs of thousands in Manassa. They helped David against the

  826. band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of

  827. Valor and were commanders in the army. For from day

  828. to day men came to David to help him, until

  829. there was a great army, like an army of God.

  830. These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed

  831. troops who came to David in Hebron to turn the

  832. kingdom of Saul over to him. According to the word

  833. of the Lord, the men of Judah, bearing shield and spear,

  834. were six thousand, eight hundred armed troops of the Simianites,

  835. mighty men of Valor for war, seven thousand, one hundred

  836. of the Levites, four thousand, six hundred the Prince Jehoiida

  837. of the House of Erin, and with him three thousand,

  838. seven hundred Zadok, a young man mighty in Valor, and

  839. twenty two commanders from his own father's house. Of the Benjaminites,

  840. the kinsmen of Saul three thousand, of whom the majority

  841. had to that point kept their allegiance to the House

  842. of Saul. Of the Ephraemites, twenty thousand, eight hundred mighty

  843. men of Valor, famous men in their father's houses. Of

  844. the half tribe of Manassa eighteen thousand who were expressly

  845. named to come and make David king of Isakar, men

  846. who had understanding of the times to know what Israel

  847. ought to do. Two hundred chiefs and all their kinsmen

  848. under their command of Zebulun, fifty thousand seasoned troops equipped

  849. for battle with all the weapons of war to help

  850. David with singleness of purpose of Naftalai one thousand commanders,

  851. with whom were thirty seven thousand men armed with shield

  852. and spear. Of the Danites twenty eight thousand, six hundred

  853. men equipped for battle of Asher, forty thousand seasoned troops

  854. ready for battle of the Rubenites and Gadites, and the

  855. half tribe of Manassa from beyond the Jordan one hundred

  856. twenty thousand men armed with all the weapons of war.

  857. All these men of war, a raid in battle order,

  858. came to Hebron with full intent to make David king

  859. over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were

  860. of a single mind to make David king. And they

  861. were there with David for three days, eating and drinking,

  862. for their brothers had made preparation for them, and also

  863. their relatives from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and

  864. Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys and on camels, and

  865. on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of flour, cakes

  866. of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen

  867. and sheep. For there was joy in Israel. First Chronicles thirteen.

  868. David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds,

  869. with every leader, and David said to all the assembly

  870. of Israel, if it seems good.

  871. To you and from the Lord our God, let us

  872. send lebra to our brothers who remained in all the

  873. lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and

  874. levites in the cities that have pasture lands, that they

  875. may be gathered to us. Then let us bring again

  876. the ark of our God to us, for we did

  877. not seek it in the days of Saul.

  878. All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing

  879. was right in the eyes of all the people. So

  880. David assembled all Israel from the Nile of Egypt to

  881. Lebohema to bring the Ark of God from Kuriat Jiim.

  882. And David and all Israel went up to Belah, that

  883. is to Kiriat Jirem, that belongs to Judah, to bring

  884. up from there the Ark of God, which is called

  885. by the name of the Lord who sits and throned

  886. above the Cherbin. And they carried the Ark of God

  887. on a new cart from the house of Abinadan and

  888. Aza and Ohio were driving the cart, and David and

  889. all Israel were rejoicing before God with all their might,

  890. with song and liars and harps and tambourines and symbols

  891. and trumpets. And when they came to the threshing floor

  892. of Kaidom, Zza put out his hand to take hold

  893. of the ark, for the oxen stumbled, and the anger

  894. of the Lord was kindled against Uzah, and he struck

  895. him down because he put out his hand to the ark.

  896. And he died there before God. And David was angry

  897. because the Lord had broken out against Uzah, and that

  898. place is called piis Azzah to this day. And David

  899. was afraid of God that day, and he said.

  900. How can I bring the Ark of God home to me?

  901. So David did not take the ark home into the

  902. city of David, but took it aside to the house

  903. of obed Edom, the Gittiteite, and the Ark of God

  904. remained with the household of obed Edom in his house

  905. three months, and the Lord blessed the household of obed

  906. Edom and all that he had First Chronicles fourteen and Hiram,

  907. king of Tire, sent messengers to David and cedar trees,

  908. also masons and carpenters to build a house for him.

  909. And David knew that the Lord had established him as

  910. king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted

  911. for the sake of his people Israel. And David took

  912. more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters.

  913. These are the names of the children born to him

  914. in Jerusalem, Shimuah, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, el Pelit, Noga, Nephig, Jefiah, Elishima,

  915. be Eliadah, and Aliphilet. When the Philistines heard that David

  916. had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines

  917. went up to search for David, but David heard of

  918. it and went out against them. Now the Philistines had

  919. come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaean,

  920. and David inquired of God.

  921. Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give

  922. them into my hand?

  923. And the Lord said to him, go up, and I

  924. will give them into your hand.

  925. And he went up to bail Paris him and David

  926. struck them down there, and David said.

  927. God has broken through my enemies by my hand like

  928. a bursting flood.

  929. Therefore the name of that place is called bail Parisin.

  930. And they left their gods there, and David gave command,

  931. and they were burned. And the Philistines yet again made

  932. a raid in the valley. And when David again inquired

  933. of God, God said to him.

  934. You shall not go up there after them. Go around

  935. and come against them opposite the balsam trees. And when

  936. you hear the sound of marching in the tops of

  937. the balsam trees, then go out to battle. For God

  938. has gone out before you to strike down the army

  939. of the Philistines.

  940. And David did as God commanded him, and they struck

  941. down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. And the

  942. fame of David went out into all lands, and the

  943. Lord brought the fear of him upon all nations. First

  944. Chronicles fifteen. David built houses for himself in the city

  945. of David, and he prepared a place for the Ark

  946. of God and pitched a tenth for him. Then David

  947. said that no one but the Levites may carry the

  948. Ark of God, for the Lord had chosen them to

  949. carry the ark of the Lord and to minister to

  950. him forever. And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to

  951. bring up the Ark of the Lord to its place

  952. which he had prepared for it.

  953. And David gathered together the sons of Aaron and the

  954. Levites of the sons of Coath, Uriel the Chief with

  955. one hundred and twenty of his brothers, of the sons

  956. of Muraraiah the Chief with two hundred and twenty of

  957. his brothers of the sons of Gersha, Joel the Chief

  958. with one hundred and thirty of his brothers of the

  959. sons of Elizathan, Shamiyah the Chief with two hundred of

  960. his brothers, of the sons of Hebron, Elile the Chief

  961. with eighty of his brothers of the sons of Aziel,

  962. Aminidab the Chief with one hundred and twelve of his brothers.

  963. Then David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar and the

  964. Levites Uriel, Azaiah, Joel, Shameiah, Elile and Aminidab, and said

  965. to them.

  966. You are the heads of the fathers houses of the Levites.

  967. Consecrate yourselves, you and your brothers, so that you may

  968. bring up the Ark of the Lord, the God of Israel,

  969. to the place that I have prepared for it, because

  970. you did not carry it the first time.

  971. The Lord, our.

  972. God broke out against us because we did not seek

  973. him according to the rule.

  974. And the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark

  975. of the Lord, the God of Israel. And the Levites

  976. carried the Ark of God on their shoulders with the polls,

  977. as Moses had commanded, according to the word of the Lord.

  978. David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint

  979. their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on

  980. musical instruments, on harps and liars and symbols to raise

  981. sounds of joy.

  982. So the Levites appointed Hemon the son of Joel, and

  983. of his brothers, Asath the son of Berachiah, and of

  984. the sons of Murai, their brothers Ethan the son of Kushea,

  985. and with them their brothers of the second order, Zechariah,

  986. jay zeel Shamiramah, jehiel an I, Eliah, Benaiah, Mayesiah, Mattithiah, Elifi,

  987. Lehu and Mcneeah, and the gatekeepers ovid Eden and Gil.

  988. The singers heimen a Up and Ethan were to sound

  989. bronze symbols. Zechariah, aziel Shameramah, jehiel an I, Eliab, Mayesiah

  990. and Veneia were to play harps according to Alamah, but Mattithiah, Elithi, Leihu, Mcneiah,

  991. ovid edam Jil and as Isziah were to lead with liars.

  992. According to the scheminid Kenaniah, leader of the Levites in music,

  993. should direct the music, for he understood it. Verakiah and

  994. Elkenah were to be gatekeepers for the ark Cheveniah Joshafa,

  995. nathano A, masi Zechariah, Veneiah, and Eliezer. The priests should

  996. blow the trumpets.

  997. Before the Ark of God.

  998. Ovid Eden and Jehiah were to be gatekeepers for the art.

  999. So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders

1000. of thousands went to bring up the Ark of the

1001. Covenant of the Lord for the house of ovid Eden

1002. with rejoicing. And because God helped the Levites who are

1003. carrying the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, they

1004. sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams. David was clothed with

1005. a robe of fine linen, as also were all the

1006. Levites who are carrying the ark, and the singers, and Kenaniah,

1007. the leader of the music of the singers, and David

1008. wore a lenin ephob So all Israel brought up the

1009. Ark of the Covenant of the Lord with shouting, to

1010. the sound of the horn, trumpets and cymbals, and made

1011. loud music on harps and lyars. And as the Ark

1012. of the Covenant of the Lord came to the city

1013. of David, Michael, the daughter of Saul, looked out of

1014. the window and saw King David dancing and rejoicing, and

1015. she despised him in her heart first Chronicles sixteen. And

1016. they brought in the Ark of God and set it

1017. inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And

1018. they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. And

1019. when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the

1020. peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of

1021. the Lord, and distributed to all Israel, both men and women,

1022. to each a loaf of bread, a portion of meat,

1023. and a cake of raisins. Then he appointed some of

1024. the Levites as ministers before the Ark of the Lord,

1025. to invoke, to thank and to praise the Lord, the

1026. God of Israel. Asaf was the chief, and second to

1027. him were Zechariah, Jail Shimeiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab Benea, obit

1028. Edom and Jaiel, who were to play harps and liars.

1029. Asaf was to sound the symbols, and Benea and Jehesel,

1030. the priests were to blow trumpets regularly before the Ark

1031. of the Covenant of God God. Then on that day

1032. David first appointed that thanksgiving be sung to the Lord

1033. by Aesaf and his brothers.

1034. Oh, give thanks to the Lord. Call upon his name,

1035. Make known his deeds among the peoples. Sing to him,

1036. Sing praises to him. Tell of all his wondrous works,

  1037. Glory in.

  1038. His holy name.

1039. Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

1040. Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence.

1041. Continually, remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles,

1042. and the judgments he uttered, Oh offspring of Israel, his servant,

1043. sons of Jacob, his chosen ones.

1044. He is the Lord, our God. His judgments are in

1045. all the earth. Remember his covenant forever, the word that

1046. he commanded for a thousand generations, the covenant that he

1047. made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, which he

1048. confirmed as a statute to Jacob, as an everlasting covenant

1049. to Israel, saying to you, I will give the land

1050. of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.

1051. When you were few in number and of little account,

1052. and sojourners in it, wandering from nation to nation, from

1053. one kingdom to another. People he allowed no one.

  1054. To oppress them.

1055. He rebuked kings on their account, saying, touch not.

  1056. My anoted ones.

1057. Do my prophets, no harm.

1058. Sing to the Lord all the earth, tell of his

1059. salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations,

1060. his marvelous works among all the peoples. For great is

1061. the Lord, and greatly to be praised, And he is

1062. to be held in awe above all gods. For all

1063. the gods of the people are idols. But the Lord

  1064. made the heavens.

1065. Splendor and majesty are before him. Strength and joy are

1066. in his place. Ascribe to the Lord, oh, plans of

1067. the peoples. Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe

1068. to the Lord the glory due his name. Bring an offering,

1069. and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor

1070. of holiness. Tremble before him all the earth. Yes, the

1071. world is established. It shall never be moved. Let the

1072. heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice. And let

1073. them say among the nations the.

1074. Lord rails, Let the sea roar and all that fills it,

1075. Let the field exalt and everything in it. Then shall

1076. the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord,

1077. for he comes to judge the earth. Oh, give thanks

1078. to the Lord, for he is good. For his steadfast

  1079. love endures forever.

1080. Say also, save us, o, God of our salvation, and

1081. gather and deliver us from among the nations, that we

1082. may give thanks to your holy name and glory in

  1083. your praise.

1084. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting

  1085. to everlasting.

  1086. Then all the people.

  1087. Said, ah.

1088. Ah and praise the Lord. So David left Aesaf and

1089. his brothers there before the ark of the Covenant of

1090. the Lord to minister regularly before the Ark as each

1091. day required, and also obit Edom and his sixty eight brothers,

1092. while obit Edam, the son of Jiduthan, and Hosah were

1093. to be gatekeepers. And he left Zadok the priest and

1094. his brothers the priests before the tabernacle of the Lord

1095. in the high place that was at Gibeon, to offer

1096. burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt

1097. offering regularly morning and evening, to do all that is

1098. written in the Law of the Lord that he commanded Israel.

1099. With them were Hemen and Jiduthan, and the rest of

1100. those chosen and expressly named to give thanks to the

1101. Lord for his steadfast love endures forever. Hemen and Juduthan

1102. had trumpets and symbols for the music, and instruments for

1103. sacred song. The sons of Juduthan were appointed to the gate.

1104. Then all the people departed, each to his house, and

1105. David went home to bless his household. First Chronicles seventeen. Now,

1106. when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan

  1107. the Prophet.

1108. Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar. But the

1109. ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.

1110. And Nathan said to David, do all that is in

1111. your heart, for God is with you. But that same

1112. night the word of the Lord came to Nathan.

1113. Go and tell my servant David. Thus says the Lord,

1114. it is not you who will build me a house

1115. to dwell in. For I have not lived in a

1116. house since the day I brought up Israel to this day.

1117. But I have gone from tent to tent, and from

1118. dwelling to dwelling in all places where I have moved

1119. with all Israel. Did I speak a word with any

1120. of the judges of Israel, whom I commander to shepherd

1121. my people, saying why have you not built me a

1122. house of cedar? Now, therefore, thus shall you say to

1123. my servant David, Thus says the Lord of Hosts. I

1124. took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to

1125. be prince over my people of Israel. And I have

1126. been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut

1127. off all your enemies from before you. And I will

1128. make for you a name like the name of the

1129. great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a

1130. place for my people Israel, and will plant them that

1131. they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed

1132. no more, and violent men shall waste them no more

1133. as formerly from the time that I appointed judges over

1134. my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover,

1135. I declare to you that the Lord will build you

1136. a house when your days are fulfilled, to walk with

1137. your fathers. I will raise up your offspring after you,

1138. one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.

1139. He shall build a house for me, and I will

1140. establish his throne forever. I will be to him the father,

1141. and he shall be to me a son. I will

1142. not take my steadfast love from him, as I took

1143. it from him who was before you. But I will

1144. confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever,

1145. and his throne shall be established forever.

1146. In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with

1147. all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. Then King David

1148. went in and sat before the Lord, and said, who.

1149. Am i, O Lord God? And what is my house

1150. that you have brought me thus far? And this was

1151. a small thing in your eyes, Oh God. You have

1152. also spoken of your servant's house for a great while

1153. to come, and have shown me future generations, O Lord God.

1154. And what more can David say to you for honoring

1155. your servant, For you know your servant, for your servant's sake,

1156. O Lord. And according to your own heart, you have

1157. done all this greatness in making known all these great things.

1158. There is none like you, O Lord, And there is

1159. no God besides you, according to all that we have

1160. heard with our ears, And who is like your people Israel,

1161. the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem

1162. to be his people, making for yourself a name for

1163. great and awesome things in driving out nations before your

1164. people whom you redeemed from Egypt, and you made your

1165. people Israel, to be your people forever. And you O Lord,

1166. became their god. And now, O Lord, let the word

1167. that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his

1168. house be established forever. And do as you have spoken,

1169. and your name will be established and magnified forever, saying,

1170. the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel's God.

1171. And the house of your servant, David, will be established

1172. before you. For you, my God, have revealed to your

1173. servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore,

1174. your servant has found courage to pray before you. And now,

1175. O Lord, you are God, and you have promised this

1176. good thing to your servant. Now you have been pleased

1177. to bless the house of your servant, that it may

1178. continue forever before you. For it is you, O Lord,

1179. who have blessed, and it is blessed forever.

1180. First Chronicles eighteen. After this, David defeated the Philistines and

1181. subdued them, and he took Gath and its villages out

1182. of the hand of the Philistines. And he defeated Moab,

1183. and the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute.

1184. David also defeated Haydad Easar, king of Zoba, Haymath as

1185. he went to set up his monument at the River Euphrates,

1186. and David took from him one thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen,

1187. and twenty thousand foot soldiers. And David hamstrung all the

1188. chariot horses, but left enough for one hundred chariots. And

1189. when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Haydad Easer,

1190. King of Zoba, David struck down twenty two thousand men

1191. of the Syrians. Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus,

1192. and the Syrians became servants to David and brought tribute,

1193. and the lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

1194. And David took the shields of gold that were carried

1195. by the servants of Haydad Easar and brought them to

1196. Jerusalem and from Tibhath and from cun cities of Haydad Eesar.

1197. David took a large amount of bronze with it. Solomon

1198. made the Bronze Sea and the pillars and the vessels

1199. of bronze. When two king of Hamath heard that David

1200. had defeated the whole army of Haydad Eesar, King of Zobah.

1201. He sent his son Hadorum to King David to ask

1202. about his health and to bless him because he had

1203. fought against Haydad Easer and defeated him. For Haydad Eesar

1204. had often been at war with two and he sent

1205. all sorts of articles of gold, of silver, and of bronze.

1206. These also King David dedicated to the Lord, together with

1207. the silver and gold that he had carried off from

1208. all the nations from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines,

1209. and Amleth ze Baishai, the son of Zuruyah, killed eighteen

1210. thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. Then he put

1211. garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's servants,

1212. and the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

1213. So David reigned over all Israel, and he administered justice

1214. and equity to all his people. And Joab, the son

1215. of Zuruja, was over the army, and Jehashifat, the son

1216. of a highlad was recorder, and Zadok, the son of

1217. a high Tub, and a Himelech, the son of Abiathar

1218. were priests, and Shavshah was secretary, and Benea, the son

1219. of Jehoyidah, was over the Karathites and the Pelethites, and

1220. David's sons were the chief officials in the service of

1221. the king first Chronicles nineteen. Now after this, Nahash, the

1222. king of the Ammonites, died, and his son reigned in

  1223. his place.

1224. And David said, I will deal kindly with Henin, the

1225. son of Nahash, for his father dealt kindly with me.

1226. So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father.

1227. And David's servants came to the land of the Ammonites,

1228. to Hanan to console him. But the princes of the

  1229. Ammonites said to Henin.

1230. Do you think because David has sent comforters to you

1231. that he is honoring your father. Have not his servants

1232. come to you to search and to overthrow and to

  1233. spy out the land.

1234. So Henin took David's servants and shaved them and cut

1235. off their garments in the middle at their hips, and

1236. sent them away, and they departed. When David was told

1237. concerning the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for

1238. the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, remain

1239. at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.

1240. When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench

1241. to David, Hainin and the Ammonites sent one thousand talents

1242. of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Aramaeica,

1243. and from Zoba. They hired thirty two thousand chariots and

1244. the king of Meyica with his army, who came and

1245. encamped before Medebah, and the Ammonites were mustered from their

1246. cities and came to battle. When David heard of it,

1247. he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty Men,

1248. and the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle

1249. array at the entrance of the city, and the kings

1250. who had come were by themselves in the open country.

1251. When Joab saw that the battle was set against him,

1252. both in front and in the rear, he chose some

1253. of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against

1254. the Syrians. The rest of his men he put in

1255. the charge of Abishai, his brother, and they were arrayed

  1256. against the Ammonites.

1257. And he said, if the Syrians are too strong for me,

1258. and you shall help me. But if the Ammonites too

1259. strong for you, and I will help you be strong.

1260. And let us use our strength for our people and

1261. for the cities of our God had made the Lord

1262. do what seems good to him.

1263. So Joab and the people who were with him drew

1264. near before the Syrians for battle, and they fled before him.

1265. And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they

1266. likewise fled before a Byshi, Joab's brother, and entered the city.

1267. Then Joab came to Jerusalem. But when the Syrians saw

1268. that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers

1269. and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates,

1270. with Shofak, the commander of the army of Hadad Ezer,

1271. at their head. And when it was told to David,

1272. he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and

1273. came to them and drew up his forces against them.

1274. And when David set the battle in array against the Syrians,

1275. they fought with him, and the Syrians fled before Israel,

1276. and David killed of the Syrians the men of seven

1277. thousand chariots and forty thousand foot soldiers, and put to death.

1278. Also Showfak, the commander of their army. And when the

1279. servants of haydad Isser saw that they had been defeated

1280. by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject

1281. to him. Him so the Syrians were not willing to

1282. save the Ammonites anymore. First Chronicles twenty. In the spring

1283. of the year, the time when kings go out to battle,

1284. Joab let out the army and ravaged the country of

1285. the Ammonites, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David remained

1286. at Jerusalem. And Joab struck down Rabbah and overthrew it.

1287. And David took the crown of their king from his head.

1288. He found that it weighed a talent of gold, and

1289. in it was a precious stone. And it was placed

1290. on David's head. And he brought out the spoil of

1291. the city a very great amount, and he brought out

1292. the people who were in it, and set them to

1293. labour with saws and iron picks and axes. And thus

1294. David did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then

1295. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem. And after

1296. this there arose war with the Philistines and Geezers. Then

1297. Sibeki the Hushathite struck down Sibai, who was one of

1298. the descendants of the Giants, and the Philistines were subdued,

1299. and there was again war with the Philistines, and El Hainin,

1300. the son of JayR, struck down Lamai, the brother of Goliath,

1301. the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a

1302. weaver's beam. And there was again war at Gath, where

1303. there was a man of great stature who had six

1304. fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot,

1305. twenty four in number. And he also was descended from

1306. the Giants. And when he taunted Israel, Jonathan, the son

1307. of Shima, David's brother, struck him down. These were descended

1308. from the and Gath, and they fell by the hand

1309. of David and by the hand of his servants first

1310. Chronicles twenty one one. Then Satan stood against Israel and

1311. incited David to number Israel. So David said to Joab

1312. and the commanders of the army.

1313. Go number Israel from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me

1314. a report that I may know their number.

1315. But Joab said, may the Lord add to his people

1316. one hundred times as many as they are, are they

1317. not my Lord the King? All of them my Lord's servants.

1318. Why then should my Lord require this? Why should it

1319. be a cause of guilt for Israel?

1320. But the King's word prevailed against Joab, so Joab departed

1321. and went throughout all Israel and came back to Jerusalem.

1322. And Joab gave this some of the numbering of the

1323. people to David. In all Israel there were one million,

1324. one hundred thousand men who drew the sword, and in

1325. Judah four hundred and seventy thousand who drew the sword.

1326. But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering,

1327. for the king's command was abhorrent to Joab. But God

1328. was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel. And

1329. David said to God, I.

1330. Have sinned greatly and that I have done this thing.

1331. But now please take away the iniquity of your servant,

1332. for I have acted very foolishly.

1333. And the Lord spoke to God David seer, saying, go.

1334. And say to David. Thus says the Lord, three things

1335. I offer you. Choose one of them that I may

  1336. do it to you.

1337. So Goad came to David and said to him.

1338. Thus says the Lord, choose what you will. Either three

1339. years of famine or three months of devastation by your

1340. foes while the sword of your enemies over takes you,

1341. or else three days of the sword of the Lord

1342. pestilence on the land, with the Angel of the Lord

1343. destroying throughout all the territory of Israel. Now decide what

1344. answer I shall return to him who sent me.

1345. Then David said to God, I am in great distress.

1346. Let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for

1347. his mercy is very great. But do not let me

1348. fall into the hand of man.

1349. So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy

1350. thousand men of Israel fell, and God sent the Angel

1351. to Jerusalem to destroy it. But as he was about

1352. to destroy it, the Lord saw and he relented from

1353. the calamity. And he said to the angel who was

  1354. working destruction.

1355. It is enough. Now stay your hand.

1356. And the Angel of the Lord was standing by the

1357. threshing floor of Ornan, the Jebucyte, and David lifted his

1358. eyes and saw the Angel of the Lord standing between

1359. earth and heaven, and in his hand a drawn sword

1360. stretched out over Jerusal. Then David, and the elders, clothed

1361. in sackcloth, fell upon their faces, and David said to God, was.

1362. It not I who gave command to number the people?

1363. It is I who have sinned and done great evil.

1364. But these sheep, what have they done?

  1365. Though?

1366. Please let your hand, o, Lord my God, be against

1367. me and against my father's house, But do not let

1368. the plague be on your people.

1369. Now the Angel of the Lord had commanded Goad to

1370. say to David that David should go up and raise

1371. an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan,

1372. the jeby site. So David went up at God's word,

1373. which he had spoken in the name of the Lord.

1374. Now Ornan was threshing wheat. He turned and saw the angel,

1375. and his four sons, who were with him, hid themselves

1376. as David came to Ornan. Ornan looked and saw David,

1377. and went out from the threshing floor and paid homage

1378. to David with his face to the ground. And David

  1379. said to Ornan, give.

1380. Me the sight of the threshing floor, that I may

1381. build on it. Alter to the Lord, give it to

1382. me at its full price, that the plague may be averted.

  1383. From the people.

1384. Then Ornan said to David, take it, and let my

1385. lord the King do what seems good to him. See,

  1386. I give the.

1387. Oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing sledges for the wood,

1388. and the wheat for a grain offering.

  1389. I give it all.

1390. But King David said to Ornan, no.

1391. But I will buy them for the full price. I

1392. will not take for the Lord what is yours, nor

1393. offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.

1394. So David paid Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by

1395. weight for the sight. And David built there an altar

1396. to the Lord, and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings,

1397. and called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him

1398. with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering.

1399. Then the Lord commanded the angel, and he put his

1400. sword back into its sheath. At that time, when David

1401. saw that the Lord had answered him, at the threshing

1402. floor of Ornan, the Jeffy site, he sacrificed there for

1403. the tap knackle of the Lord, which Moses had made

1404. in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were

1405. at that time in the high place at Gibeon. But

1406. David could not go before it to inquire of God,

1407. for he was afraid of the sword of the Angel

1408. of the Lord first Chronicles twenty two. Then David said.

1409. Here shall be the house of the Lord God, and

1410. hear the altar of burnt offering for Israel.

1411. David commanded to gather together the resident aliens who were

1412. in the land of Israel, and he set stonecutters to

1413. prepare dressed stones for building the house of God. David

1414. also provided great quantities of iron for nails for the

1415. doors of the gates and for clamps, as well as

1416. bronze and quantities beyond weighing and cedar timbers without number.

1417. For the Sidonians and Tyrians brought great quantities of cedar

  1418. to David.

1419. For David said, Solomon, my son is young and inexperienced,

1420. and the house that is to be built for the

1421. Lord must be exceedingly magnificent of fame and glory throughout

1422. all lands. I will therefore make preparation for it.

1423. So David provided materials in great quantity before his death.

1424. Then he called for Solomon, his son, and charged him

1425. to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel.

  1426. David said to Solomon.

1427. My son. I had it in my heart to build

1428. a house to the name of the Lord, my God.

1429. But the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

1430. you have shed much blood and have waged great wars.

1431. You shall not build a house to my name, because

1432. you have shed so much blood before me on the earth. Behold,

1433. a son shall be born to you, who shall be

1434. a man of rest. I will give him rest from

1435. all his surrounding enemies. For his name shall be Solomon,

1436. and I will give peace and quiet to Israel. In

1437. his days. He shall build a house for my name.

1438. He shall be my son, and I will be his father,

1439. and I will establish his royal throne in Israel forever. Now,

1440. my son, the Lord be with you, so that you

1441. may succeed in building the house of the Lord your God.

1442. As he has spoken concerning you. Only may the Lord

1443. grant you discretion and understanding that when he gives you

1444. charge over Israel, you may keep the law of the

1445. Lord your God. Then you will prosper if you are

1446. careful to observe the statutes and the rules that the

1447. Lord commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous, fear not,

1448. do not be dismayed with great pains. I have provided

1449. for the House of the Lord one hundred thousand talents

1450. of gold, a million talents of silver and bronze, and

1451. iron beyond weane, for there is so much of it.

1452. Timber and stone too, I have provided to these. You

1453. must add you have an abundance of workmen, stonecutters, carpenters,

1454. and all kinds of craftsmen without number, skilled in working gold, silver, bronze,

1455. and iron. Arise and work. The Lord be with you.

1456. David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help

1457. Solomon his son, saying, is.

1458. Not the Lord your God with you? And has he

1459. not given you peace on every side? For He has

1460. delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and

1461. the land is subdued before the Lord and his people.

1462. Now set your mind and heart to seek the Lord

1463. your God. Arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God,

1464. so that the ark of the Covenant of the Lord

1465. and the holy vessels of God may be brought into

1466. a house built for the name of the Lord.

1467. First Chronicles twenty three. When David was old and full

1468. of days, he made Solomon his son, king over Israel,

1469. David assembled all the leaders of Israel, and the priests

1470. and the Levites. The Levites thirty years old and upward

1471. were numbered, and the total was thirty eight thousand men.

1472. Twenty four thousand of these, David said, shall have charge

1473. of the work in the house of the Lord. Six

1474. thousand shall be officers and judges, four thousand gatekeepers, and

1475. four thousand shall offer praises to the Lord with the

1476. instruments that I have made for praise.

1477. And David organized them in divisions corresponding to the sons of.

1478. Levi, Gershon, Cohath, and Maurai. The sons of Gershon were

1479. Leyden and SHIMII. The sons of Leyden Jehiel the Chief

1480. and Zeithim and Joel three. The sons of SHIMII Shilomuth,

1481. Hazio and Heron three. These were the heads of the

1482. father's houses of Leyden and the sons of Shemii Jahath,

1483. Zya and Jiush and Bariah. These four were the sons

1484. of Shemiei. Jahath was the chief and Zaiza the second,

1485. but Jeush and Bariyah did not have many sons. Therefore

1486. they became counted as a single father's house. The sons

1487. of Kohath, Amram, Ishar, Hebrun, and Uziel.

1488. Four the sons of Amram, Aaron and Moses. Erin was

1489. set apart to dedicate the most holy things, that he

1490. and his sons forever should make offerings before the Lord

1491. and minister to him and pronounced blessings in his name forever.

1492. But the sons of Moses, the Man of God, were

1493. named among the tribe of Levi.

1494. The sons of Moses, Gersham and eli iSER. The sons

1495. of Gersham Shabuel the Chief, The sons of Eliezer Rahebiah

1496. the Chief. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons

1497. of Rahebiah were very many. The sons of Ishar Shalomith

1498. the Chief, the sons of Hebron, Jeriah the Chief, a

1499. Mariah the second, Jeheseel the third, and Jecamiem the fourth.

1500. The sons of Zil Mikah the Chief and Ishiah the second.

1501. The sons of Marrai, Malai and Mushai. The sons of Malai,

1502. Eliezar and Kish. Eliezar died having no sons, but only

1503. daughters their kinsmen. The sons of Kish married them. The

1504. sons of Mushai, Malai, Peter, and Jeremah.

1505. Three. These were the sons of Levi by their father's

1506. houses the heads of father's houses, as they were listed

1507. according to the number of the names of the individuals

1508. from twenty years old and upward, who were to do

1509. the work for the service of the House of the Lord.

1510. For David said, the Lord, the God of Israel, has

1511. given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem forever.

1512. And so the Levites no longer need to carry the

1513. tabernacle or any of the things for its service.

1786. and said, hear me, my.

1787. Brothers and my people. I had it in my heart

1788. to build a house of rest for the ark of

1789. the covenant of the Lord, and for the footstool of

1790. our God. And I made preparations for building. But God

1791. said to me, you may not build a house for

1792. my name, for you are a man of war and

1793. have shed blood. Yet the Lord, God of Israel chose

1794. me from all my father's house to be king over

1795. Israel forever. For he chose Judah as leader, and in

1796. the house of Judah, my father's house, and among my

1797. father's sons. He took pleasure in me to make me

1798. king over all Israel and of all my sons. For

1799. the Lord has given me many sons. He has chosen Solomon,

1800. my son, to sit on the throne of the kingdom

1801. of the Lord over Israel. He said to me, it

1802. is Solomon, your son, who shall build my house and

1803. my courts. For I have chosen him to be my son.

1804. And I will be his father. I will establish his

1805. kingdom forever if he continues strong in keeping my commandments

1806. and my rules as he is today.

  1807. Now.

1808. Therefore, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of

1809. the Lord, and in the hearing of our God, observe

1810. and seek out all the commandments of the Lord, your God,

1811. that you may possess this good land and leave it

1812. for an inheritance to your children after you forever. And you, Solomon,

1813. my son, know the God of your father, and serve

1814. him with a whole heart and with a willing mind.

1815. For the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan

1816. and thought. If you seek him, he will be found

1817. by you. But if you forsake him, he will cast

1818. you off forever. Be careful now, for the Lord has

1819. chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary. Be

  1820. strong and do it.

1821. Then, David gave Solomon his son, the plan of the

1822. vestibule of the temple, and of its houses, its treasuries,

1823. its upper rooms, and its inner chambers, and of the

1824. room for the mercy seat, and the plan of all

1826. House of the Lord, all the surrounding chambers, the treasuries

1827. of the House of God, and the treasuries for dedicated gifts,

1828. for the divisions of the priests and of the levites,

1829. and all the work of the service in the House

1830. of the Lord. For all the vessels for the service

1834. lamp stands and their lamps. The weight of gold for

1835. each lamp stand and its lamps. The weight of silver

1837. use of each lamp stand in the service. The weight

1838. of gold for each table for the showbread, the silver

1839. for the silver tables, and pure gold for the forks,

1840. the basins and the cups for the golden bulls, and

1841. the weight of each for the silver balls in the

1842. weight of each for the altar of incense made of

1843. refined gold, and its weight. Also his plan for the

1844. golden chariot of the Cherubim that spread their wings and

1845. covered the ark of the Covenant of the Lord.

1846. All this he made clear to me in writing from

1847. the hand of the Lord. All the work to be

1848. done according to the plan.

1849. Then David said to Solomon, his son.

1850. Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid,

1851. and do not be dismayed. For the Lord God, even

1852. my God is with you. He will not leave you

1853. or forsake you until all the work for the service

1854. of the House of the Lord is finished. And behold

1855. the divisions of the priests and the levites for all

1856. the service of the House of God. And with you

1857. in all the work will be every willing man who

1858. has skill for any kind of service. Also the officers

1859. and all the people will be wholly at your command.

1860. First Chronicles twenty nine, and David the King said to

  1861. all the assembly.

1862. Solomon, my son, whom alone God has chosen, is young

1863. and inexperienced, and the work is great for the palace

1864. will not be for man, but for the Lord God.

1865. So I have provided for the House of my God,

1866. so far as I was able, the gold for the

1867. things of gold, the silver for the things of silver,

1868. and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron

1869. for the things of iron, and wood for the things

1870. of wood. Besides great quantities of onyx and stones for

1871. setting antimoney, colored stones, all sorts of precious stones and marble. Moreover,

1872. in addition to all that I have provided for the

1873. Holy House, I have a treasure of my own of

1874. gold and silver. And because of my devotion to the

1875. House of my God, I give it to the House

1876. of my God three thousand talents of gold, of the

1877. gold of Ophur, and seven thousand talents of refined silver,

1878. for overlaying the walls of the house, and for all

1879. the work to be done by craftsmen. Gold for the

1880. things of gold, and silver for the things of silver.

1881. Who then will offer willingly consecrating himself today to the Lord.

1882. Then the leaders of Father's houses made their free will offerings,

1883. as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders

1884. of thousands and of hundreds, and the officers over the

1885. King's work. They gave for the service of the House

1886. of God, five thousand talents and ten thousand derrecks of gold,

1887. ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze,

1888. and one hundred thousand talents of iron. And whoever had

1889. precious stones gave them to the treasury of the House

1890. of the Lord. In the care of Jehiel, the Gershanite

1891. then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for

1892. with a whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord.

1893. David the King also rejoiced greatly. Therefore David blessed the

1894. Lord in the presence of all the assembly, and David said.

1895. Blessed are you, oh Lord, the God of Israel, our father,

1896. forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and

1897. the power, and the glory and the victory and the majesty.

1898. For all that is in the heavens and in the

1899. earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, And

1900. you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and

1901. honor come from you, and you rule over all. In

1902. your hand are power and might. And in your hand

1903. it is to make great and to give strength to all.

1904. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your

1905. glorious name. But who am I and what is my people?

1906. That we should be able thus to offer willingly? For

1907. all things come from you, and of your own have

1908. we given you. For we are strangers before you, and sojourners,

1909. as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth

1910. are like a shadow. And there is no abiding, O Lord,

1911. our God. All this abundance that we have provided for

1912. building you a house for your holy name, comes from

1913. your hand and is all your own. I know, my God,

1914. that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness.

1915. In the uprightness of my heart, I have freely offered

1916. all these things. And now I have seen your people

1917. who are present here offering freely and joyously to you,

1918. O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, our fathers,

1919. keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of

1920. your people, and direct their hearts toward you. Grant to Solomon,

1921. my son, a whole heart, that he may keep your commandments,

1922. your testimonies, and your statutes, performing all, and that he

1923. may build the palace for which I have made provision.

1924. Then David said to all the assembly.

1925. Bless the Lord, your God.

1926. And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of

1927. their fathers, and bowed their heads and paid homage to

1928. the Lord and to the King. And they offered sacrifices

1929. to the Lord, and on the next day offered burnt

1930. offerings to the Lord, one thousand bulls, one thousand rams,

1931. and one thousand lambs with their drink offerings, and sacrifices

1932. in abundance for all Israel. And they ate and drank

1933. before the Lord on that day with great gladness. And

1934. they made Solomon, the son of David, king the second time,

1935. and they anointed him as prince for the Lord, and

1936. Zadok as priest. Then Solomon sat on the throne of

1937. the Lord as king in place of David his father,

1938. and he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him. All the

1939. leaders and the mighty men, and also all the sons

1940. of King David pledged their allegiance to King Solomon. And

1941. the Lord made Solomon very great in the sight of

1942. all Israel, and bestowed on him such royal majesty as

1943. had not been on any king before him in Israel.

1944. Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.

1945. The time that he reigned over Israel was forty years.

1946. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty three years

1947. in Jerusalem. Then he died at a good age, full

1948. of days, riches and honor, and Solomon his son reigned

1949. in his place. Now the acts of King David, from

1950. first to last, are written in the Chronicles of Samuel,

1951. and in the Chronicles of Nathan the Prophet, and in

1952. the chronicles of Gad the Seer, with accounts of all

1953. his rule and his might, and of the circumstances that

1954. came upon him, and upon Israel, and upon all the

  1955. kingdoms of the countries,
