  1. First Corinthians. First Corinthians one one Paul called by the

  2. will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus

  3. and our brother sostens to the Church of God, that

  4. is in Corinth to those sanctified in Christ Jesus called

  5. to be saints, together with all those who in every

  6. place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  7. both their Lord and ours. Grace to you and peace

  8. from God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I

  9. give thanks to My God always for you, because of

  10. the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus,

  11. that in every way you were enriched in Him in

  12. all speech and all knowledge, even as the testimony about

  13. Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not

  14. lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the

  15. revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you

  16. to the end guiltless in the day of our Lord

  17. Jesus Christ. God is faithful by whom you were called

  18. into the fellowship of His son Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  19. I appeal to you brothers, by the name of our

  20. Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that

  21. there be no divisions among you, but that you be

  22. united in the same mind and the same judgment. For

  23. it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that

  24. there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean

  25. is that each one of you says, I follow Paul,

  26. or I follow a Polas, or I follow Sephus, or

  27. I follow Christ? Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?

  28. Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I

  29. thank God that I baptize none of you except Christmus

  30. and Gaius, so that no one may say that you

  31. were baptized in my name. I did baptize also the

  32. household of Stephanus. Beyond that, I do not know whether

  33. I baptized anyone else, for Christ did not send me

  34. to baptize, but to preach the Gospel, and not with

  35. words of eloquent wisdom, lest the Cross of Christ be

  36. emptied of its power. For the word of the Cross

  37. is folly to those who are perishing, but to us

  38. who are being saved, it is the power of God.

  39. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of

  40. the wise and the discernment of the discerning. I will

  41. form Where is the one who is wise? Where is

  42. the scribe, where is the debater of his age? Has

  43. not God made foolish the wisdom of the world, For

  44. since in the wisdom of God, the world did not

  45. know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly

  46. of what we preach to save those who believe.

  47. For Jews demand signs, and Greeks seek wisdom. But we

  48. preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly

  49. to gentile. But to those who are called both Jews

  50. and Greeks Christ the power of God and the wisdom

  51. of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man,

  52. and the weakness of God is stronger than man man.

  53. For consider your calling, brothers. Not many of you are

  54. wise according to worldly standards. Not many were powerful, not

  55. many were of noble birth. But God chose what is

  56. foolish in the world to shame the wise. God chose

  57. what is weak in the world to shame the strong.

  58. God chose what is low and despised in the world,

  59. even things that are not to bring to nothing, things

  60. that are so that no human being might boast in

  61. the presence of God. And because of Him you are

  62. in Christ, Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God,

  63. righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written,

  64. let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.

  65. First Corinthians two. And I, when I came to you, brothers,

  66. did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God

  67. with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know

  68. nothing among you accept Jesus Christ and him crucified. And

  69. that was with you in weakness, and in fear and

  70. much trembling. And my speech and my message were not

  71. in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the

  72. spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest

  73. in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

  74. Yet among the.

  75. Mature we do in part wisdom, although it is not

  76. a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of

  77. this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we

  78. impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God

  79. decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the

  80. rulers of this age understood this, for if they had,

  81. they would not have crucified them, Lord of Glory.

  82. But as it is written, what.

  83. No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart

  84. of man imagined what God has prepared for those who

  85. love him.

  86. These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

  87. For the spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

  88. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of

  89. that person, which is in him. So also no one

  90. comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

  91. Now we have received not the spirit of the world,

  92. but the Spirit who is from God, that we might

  93. understand the things freely given us by God. And we

  94. impart this in words not taught by human wisdom, but

  95. taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who

  96. are spiritual.

  97. The natural person does not accept the things of the

  98. Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and

  99. he is not able to understand them, because they are

  100. spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is

  101. himself to be judged by no one.

  102. For who has understood the mind of the Lord so

  103. as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

  104. First Corinthians three. But I, brothers, could not address you

  105. as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as

  106. infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food.

  107. For you are not ready for it. And even now

  108. you are not yet ready, for you are still of

  109. the flesh. For a while there is jealousy and strife

  110. among you. Are you not of the flesh and behaving

  111. only in a human way? For when one says I

  112. follow Paul and another I follow Apoluse, are you not

  113. being merely human? What? Then, is all? What is Paul

  114. servants through whom you believed as the Lord assigned to each.

  115. I planted, Apolus watered, but God gave the growth. So

  116. neither he who plants nor he who waters, is anything

  117. but only God who gives the growth.

  118. He who plants and he who waters are one, and

  119. each will receive his wages according to his labor. For

  120. we are God's fellow workers. You are God's field, God's.

  121. Building, according to the grace of God given to me.

  122. Like a skilled master builder. I laid a foundation, and

  123. someone else is building upon it. Let each one take

  124. care how he builds upon it, For no one can

  125. lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which

  126. is Jesus Christ. Now, if anyone builds on the foundation

  127. with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay straw, each one's

  128. work will become manifest, for the day will disclose it

  129. because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire

  130. will test what sort of work each one has done.

  131. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives,

  132. he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up,

  133. he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved.

  134. But only as through fire. Do you not know that

  135. you are God's temple, and that God's spirit dwells in you.

  136. If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For

  137. God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

  138. Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks

  139. that he is wise in this age, let him become

  140. a fool that he may become wise, For the wisdom of.

  141. This world is folly.

  142. With God, Lord is written he catches the wise and

  143. their craftiness. And again the Lord knows the thoughts of

  144. the wise, that they are feutile.

  145. So let no one both in men, for all things

  146. are yours, whether Paul or Apollus or Cephis, or the

  147. world or life or death, or the present or the future,

  148. all are yours. And you are Christ's. And Christ is

  149. God's first Corinthians four.

  150. This is how one should regard us as servants of Christ,

  151. and stewards are the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is

  152. required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.

  153. But with me, it is a very small thing that

  154. I should be judged by you or by any human court.

  155. In fact, I do not even judge myself, for I

  156. am not aware of anything against myself. But I am

  157. not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore,

  158. do not pronounce judgment before the time. Before the Lord comes,

  159. who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness,

  160. and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each

  161. one will receive his commendation from God. I have applied

  162. all these things to myself and Apolus for your benefit, brothers,

  163. that you may learn by us not to go beyond

  164. what is written, that none of you may be puffed

  165. up in favor of one against another, For who sees

  166. anything different in you? What do you have that you

  167. did not receive? If then you received it, why do

  168. you boast as if you did not receive it? Already

  169. you have all you want. Already you have become rich

  170. without us. You have become kings, and would that you

  171. did reign so that we might share the rule with you.

  172. For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as

  173. last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we

  174. have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and

  175. to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, But you

  176. are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong.

  177. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute.

  178. To the present hour, we hunger and thirst.

  179. We are poorly.

  180. Dressed, and buffeted and homeless, and we labor working with

  181. our own hands. When reviled, we bless. When persecuted, we endure,

  182. When slandered, we entreat. We have become and are still

  183. like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.

  184. I do not write these things to make you ashamed,

  185. but to admonish you, as my beloved children, For though

  186. you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have

  187. many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus

  188. through the Gospel. I urge you then be imitators of me.

  189. That is why I sent you, Timothy, my beloved and

  190. faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my

  191. ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.

  192. Some are arrogant, as though I were not coming to you.

  193. But I will come to you soon if the Lord wills,

  194. and I will find out not the talk of these

  195. arrogant people, but their power, For the Kingdom of God

  196. does not consist in talk, but in power. What do

  197. you wish, shall I come to you with a rod

  198. or with love in a spirit of gentleness? First Corinthians five.

  199. It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you,

  200. and of a kind that is not tolerated even among PAGs.

  201. For a man has his father's wife, and you are arrogant.

  202. Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has

  203. done this be removed from among you. For though absent

  204. in body, I am present in spirit, and as if present,

  205. I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did

  206. such a thing. When you are assembled in the name

  207. of the Lord Jesus, and my spirit is present, with

  208. the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver

  209. this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,

  210. so that his spirit may be saved in the day

  211. of the Lord.

  212. Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that

  213. a little eleven leavens the whole lump, cleans out the

  214. old leaven, that you may be a new lump as

  215. you really are on leavened for Christ our passover lamb

  216. has been sacrificed.

  217. Let us therefore celebrate the festival not with the old leaven,

  218. the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened

  219. bread of sincerity and truth. I wrote to you in

  220. my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people, not

  221. at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or

  222. the greedy and swindlers or idolators. Since then you would

  223. need to go out of the world. But now I

  224. am writing to you not to associate with anyone who

  225. bears the name of brother, if he is guilty of

  226. sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolator, reviler, drunkard,

  227. or swindler, not even to eat with such a one.

  228. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is

  229. it not those inside the church whom you are to judge.

  230. God judges those outside, purge the evil person from among you.

  231. First Corinthians six, when one of you has a grievance

  232. against another, does he dare go to law before the

  233. unrighteous instead of the saints? Or do you not know

  234. that the saints will judge the world. And if the

  235. world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent

  236. to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we

  237. are to judge angels? How much more then matters pertaining

  238. to this life? So if you have such cases, why

  239. do you lay them before those who have no standing

  240. in the church? I say this to your shame. Can

  241. it be that there is no one among you wise

  242. enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, but brother

  243. goes to law against brother, And that before unbelievers to

  244. have lawsuits at all with one another is already a

  245. defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not

  246. rather be defrauded? But you yourselves wrong and defraud even

  247. your own brothers? Or do you not know that the

  248. unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not

  249. be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers,

  250. nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy,

  251. nor drunkards, nor revilers nor swindlers will inherit the Kingdom

  252. of God, and such were some of you. But you

  253. were washed, you were sanctified, You were justified in the

  254. name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the spirit

  255. of our God. All things are lawful for me, but

  256. not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me,

  257. but I will not be enslaved by anything. Food is

  258. meant for the stomach, and the stomach for food, and

  259. God will destroy both one and the other. Body is

  260. not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and

  261. the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord

  262. and will also raise us up by His power. Do

  263. you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?

  264. Shall I then take the members of Christ and make

  265. the members of a prostitute? Never? Or do you not

  266. know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes

  267. one body with her, For as it is written, the

  268. two will become one flesh. But he who is joined

  269. to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Flee from

  270. sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside

  271. the body. But the sexually immoral person sins against his

  272. own body. Or do you not know that your body

  273. is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom

  274. you have from God. You are not your own, for

  275. you were bought with a price. So glorify God in

  276. your body. First Corinthians seven. Now, concerning the matters about

  277. which you wrote, it is good for a man not

  278. to have sexual relations with a woman. But because of

  279. the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his

  280. own wife, and each woman her own husband. The husband

  281. should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise

  282. the wife to her husband. For the wife does not

  283. have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise,

  284. the husband does not have authority over his own body,

  285. but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except

  286. perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may

  287. devote yourselves to prayer, but then come together again, so

  288. that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack

  289. of self control. Now, as a concession, not a command,

  290. I say this, I wish that all were as I

  291. myself am, But each has his own gift from God,

  292. one of one kind and one of another. To the

  293. unmarried and the widows, I say that it is good

  294. for them to remain single as I am, But if

  295. they cannot exercise self control, they should marry. Her, for

  296. it is better to marry than to burn with passion

  297. to the married. I give this charge, not I, but

  298. the Lord. The wife should not separate from her husband,

  299. but if she does, she should remain unmarried, or else

  300. be reconciled to her husband. And the husband should not

  301. divorce his wife. To the rest, I say I, not

  302. the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who

  303. is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him,

  304. he should not divorce her. If any woman has a

  305. husband who is an und and he consents to live

  306. with her, she should not divorce him. For the unbelieving

  307. husband is made holy because of his wife, and the

  308. unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise

  309. your children would be unclean. But as it is, they

  310. are holy. But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it

  311. be so. In such cases, the brother or sister is

  312. not enslaved. God has called you to peace. For how

  313. do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband,

  314. Or how do you know husband, whether you will save

  315. your wife. Only let each person lead the life that

  316. the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God

  317. has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.

  318. Was anyone at the time of his call already circumcised,

  319. let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision.

  320. Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised, let

  321. him not seek circumcision. For neither circumcision and counts for anything,

  322. nor uncircumcision. But keeping the commandments of God, each one

  323. should remain in the condition in which he was called.

  324. Were you a slave when called, Do not be concerned

  325. about it. But if you can gain your freedom, avail

  326. yourself of the opportunity. For he who was called in

  327. the Lord as a slave is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise,

  328. he who was free when called is a slave of Christ.

  329. You were bought with a price, Do not become slaves

  330. of men. So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called there,

  331. let him remain with God. Now concerning the betrothed, I

  332. have no command from the Lord, but I give my

  333. judgment as one who, by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy.

  334. I think that in view of the present distress, it

  335. is good for a person to remain as he is.

  336. Are you bound to a wife, Do not seek to

  337. be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not

  338. seek a wife. But if you do marry, you have

  339. not sinned. And if a betrothed woman marries, she has

  340. not sinned. Yet those who marry will have worldly troubles.

  341. And I would spare you that this is what I mean, Brothers,

  342. The appointed time has grown very short from now on.

  343. Let those who have wives live as though they had none,

  344. and those who mourn as though they were not mourning,

  345. and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing,

  346. and those who buy as though they had no goods,

  347. and those who deal with the world as though they

  348. had no dealings with it. For the present form of

  349. this world is passing away. I want you to be

  350. free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the

  351. things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But

  352. the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to

  353. please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the

  354. unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of

  355. the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit,

  356. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how

  357. to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit,

  358. not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote

  359. good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.

  360. If any one thinks that he is not behaving properly

  361. toward his betrothed, if his passions are strong and it

  362. has to be, let him do as he wishes. Let

  363. them marry. It is no sin. But whoever is firmly

  364. established in his heart, being under no necessity, but having

  365. his desire under control, and has determined this in his

  366. heart to keep her as his betrothed, he will do well.

  367. So then he who marries his betrothed does well, and

  368. he who refrains from marriage will do even better. A

  369. wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives,

  370. but if her husband dies, she is free to be

  371. married to whom she wishes only in the Lord. Yet

  372. in my judgment, she is happier if she remains as

  373. she is. And I think that I too have the

  374. spirit of God. First Corinthians eight.

  375. Now, concerning food offered to idols, we know that all

  376. of us possess knowledge. This knowledge puffs up, but love

  377. builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something he

  378. does not yet know as he ought to know. But

  379. if anyone loves God, he is known by God.

  380. Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols,

  381. we know that an idol has no real existence, and

  382. that there is no God but one. For although there

  383. may be so called god gods in heaven or on earth,

  384. as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet

  385. for us there is one God, the Father, from whom

  386. are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord,

  387. Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom

  388. we exist.

  389. However, not all possess this knowledge, but some, through former

  390. association with idols, eat food is really offered to an idol,

  391. and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not

  392. commend us to God. We are no worse off if

  393. we do not eat, and no better off if we do.

  394. But take care that this right of yours does not

  395. somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if

  396. anyone sees you, who have knowledge, eating in an idol's temple,

  397. will he not be encouraged if his conscience is weak

  398. to eat food offered to idols, And so by your knowledge,

  399. this weak person is destroyed the brother for whom Christ died. Thus,

  400. sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it

  401. is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes

  402. my brother stumble. I will never eat meat lest I

  403. make my brother stumble first Corinthians nine. Am I not free?

  404. Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus

  405. our Lord? Are not you my workmanship and the Lord?

  406. If to others I am not an apostle, at least

  407. I am to you, for you are the seal of

  408. my apostleship and the Lord. This is my defense to

  409. those who would examine me. Do we not have the

  410. right to eat and drink? Do we not have the

  411. right to take along a believing wife, as do the

  412. other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephis?

  413. Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no

  414. right to refrain from working for a living, Who serves

  415. as a soldier at his own expense, who plants a

  416. vineyard without eating any of its fruit, or who tends

  417. a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I

  418. say these things on human authority? Does not the law

  419. say the same?

  420. For it is written in law of Moses you shall

  421. not mussle an ox when it treads out the grain?

  422. Is it for Oxen that God is concerned? Does he

  423. not speak entirely for our sake. It was written for

  424. our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope, and

  425. the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop.

  426. If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it

  427. too much if we reap material things from you? If

  428. others share this rightful claim on you, do not we

  429. even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right,

  430. but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in

  431. the way of the Gospel of Christ. Do you not

  432. know that those who are employed in the temple service

  433. get their food from the temple, and those who serve

  434. at the altars share in the sacrificial offerings in the

  435. same way. The Lord commanded that those who proclaim the

  436. Gospel should get their living by the Gospel. But I

  437. have made no use of any of these rights, Nor

  438. am I writing these things to secure any such provision.

  439. For I would rather die than have anyone deprive me

  440. of my ground for boasting. For if I preach the Gospel,

  441. that gives me no ground for boasting, for necessity is

  442. laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not

  443. preach the Gospel. For if I do this of my own,

  444. will I have a reward. But if not of my

  445. own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship. What

  446. then is my reward, that in my preaching I may

  447. present the Gospel free of charge, so as not to

  448. make full use of my right in the Gospel. For

  449. though I am free from all, I have made myself

  450. a servant to all, that I might win more of them.

  451. To the Jews, I became as a Jew in order

  452. to win Jews to those under the law. I became

  453. as one under the law, though not being myself under

  454. the law, that I might win those under the law.

  455. To those outside the law. I became as one outside

  456. the law, not being outside the law of God, but

  457. under the law of Christ, that I might win those

  458. outside the law. To the weak. I became weak that

  459. I might win the week. I have become all things

  460. to all people, that by all means I might save some.

  461. I do it all for the sake of the Gospel,

  462. that I may share with them in its blessings.

  463. Do you not know that in erase all the runners run,

  464. but only one receives prize. So run that you may

  465. obtain it. Every athlete exercises self control in all things.

  466. They do it to receive a perishable reef. But we

  467. are imperishable.

  468. So I do not run aimlessly. I do not box

  469. as one beating the air. But I discipline my body

  470. and keep it under control, unless after preaching to others,

  471. I myself should be disqualified. First Corinthians ten, For I

  472. want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all

  473. under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and

  474. all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in

  475. the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and

  476. all drank the same spiritual drink, For they drank from

  477. the spiritual l that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless,

  478. with most of them, God was not pleased, for they

  479. were overthrown in the wilderness.

  480. Now these things took place as examples for us that

  481. we might not desire evil as they did. Do not

  482. be idolaters. If some of them were, as it is written,

  483. the people sat down to eat and drink and rose

  484. up to play. We must not indulge in sexual immorality,

  485. as some of them did, and twenty three thousand fell

  486. in a single day. We must not put Christ to

  487. the test as some of them did, and were destroyed

  488. by serpents, nor grumble as some of them did. And

  489. we're destroyed by the destroyer.

  490. Now these things happened to them as an example, but

  491. they were written down for our instruction, on whom the

  492. end of the ages has come. Therefore, let anyone who

  493. thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No

  494. temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.

  495. God is faithful, and he will not let you be

  496. tempted beyond your ability. But with the temptation he will

  497. also provide the way of escape that you may be

  498. able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

  499. I speak as to sensible people. Judge for yourselves what

  500. I say. The cup of blessing that we bless, is

  501. it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The

  502. bread that we break, is it not a participation in

  503. the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we

  504. who are many, are one body, for we all partake

  505. of the one bread. Consider, the people of Israel are

  506. not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar.

  507. What do I imply, then, that food offered to idols

  508. is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I

  509. imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and

  510. not to God. I do not want you to be

  511. participants with demons. You cannot drink the of the Lord

  512. and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the

  513. table of the Lord and the table of demons.

  514. Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger

  515. than he? All things are lawful, but not all things

  516. are helpful. All things are lawful, but not all things

  517. build up. Let no one seek his own good but

  518. the good of his neighbor. Eat whatever is sold in

  519. the meat market, without raising any question on the ground

  520. of conscience. For the earth is the Lord's and the

  521. fullness thereof.

  522. If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner, and

  523. you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before

  524. you without raising any question on the ground of conscience.

  525. But if someone says to you, this has been offered

  526. in sacrifice, then do not eat it. For the sake

  527. of the one who informed you, and for the sake

  528. of conscience. I do not mean your conscience, but his.

  529. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else's conscience?

  530. If I partake with the fulness why am I denounced

  531. because of that for which I give thanks. So whether

  532. you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all

  533. to the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews,

  534. or to Greeks, or to the Church of God. Just

  535. as I try to please everyone. In everything, I do,

  536. not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that

  537. they may be saved. First, Corinthians eleven, be imitators of me,

  538. as I am of Christ. Now I commend you because

  539. you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even

  540. as I deliver them to you. But I want you

  541. to understand that the head of every man is Christ,

  542. the head of a wife is her husband, and the

  543. head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or

  544. prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. But every

  545. wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors

  546. her head, since it is the same as if her

  547. head were shaven. For if a wife will not cover

  548. her head, then she should cut her hair short. But

  549. since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off

  550. her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head.

  551. For a man ought not to cover his head since

  552. He is the image and glory of God. But woman

  553. is the glory of Man. For man was not made

  554. from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created

  555. for woman, but woman for man.

  556. That is why a wife ought to have a symbol

  557. of authority on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless,

  558. in the Lord, woman is not independent of man, nor

  559. man of woman. For as woman was made from man,

  560. some man is now born of woman, and all things

  561. are from God.

  562. Judge for yourselves. Is it proper for a wife to

  563. pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not nature

  564. itself teach you that if a man wears long hair,

  565. it is a disgrace for him. But if a woman

  566. has long hair, it is her glory, for her hair

  567. is given to her for a covering. If anyone is

  568. inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor

  569. do the churches of God. But in the following instructions,

  570. I do not commend you, because when you come together,

  571. it is not for the better, but for the worse.

  572. For in the first place, when you come together as

  573. a church, I hear that there are divisions among you,

  574. and I believe it in part, for there must be

  575. factions among you, in order that those who are genuine

  576. among you may be recognized when you come together. It

  577. is not the Lord's supper that you eat. For in eating,

  578. each one goes ahead with his own meal, one goes hungry,

  579. another gets drunk. What do you not have houses to

  580. eat and drink in? Or do you despise the Church

  581. of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall

  582. I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No?

  583. I will not, For I received from the Lord what

  584. I also delivered to you. That the Lord Jesus, on

  585. the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when

  586. he had given thanks, he broke it and said, this

  587. is my body, which is for you. Do this in

  588. remembrance of me. In the same way, also he took

  589. the cup after supper, saying, this cup is the new

  590. covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you

  591. drink it in remembrance of me. For as often as

  592. you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim

  593. the Lord's death until he comes. Whoever therefore eats the

  594. bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an

  595. unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood

  596. of the Lord. Let a person examine himself then, and

  597. so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

  598. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body

  599. eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many

  600. of you are weak and ill, and some have died.

  601. But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.

  602. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined,

  603. so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

  604. So, then, my brothers, when you come together to eat,

  605. wait for one another. If anyone is hungry, let him

  606. eat at home, so that when you come together it

  607. will not be for judgment about the other things. I

  608. will give directions when I come first Corinthians twelve. Now,

  609. concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to

  610. be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you

  611. were led astray to mute idols. However you were led. Therefore,

  612. I want you to understand that no one speaking in

  613. the spirit of God ever says Jesus is accursed, and

  614. no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the

  615. Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the

  616. same spirit and There are varieties of service, but the

  617. same Lord. And there are varieties of activities, but it

  618. is the same God who empowers them all. In everyone,

  619. to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for

  620. the common good. For to one is given through the

  621. spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance

  622. of knowledge according to the same spirit to another. Faith

  623. by the same spirit to another. Gifts of healing by

  624. the one spirit to another, the working of miracles to another,

  625. prophecy to another, the ability to distinguish between spirits to another,

  626. various kinds of tongues to another, the interpretation of tongues.

  627. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit,

  628. who apportions to each one individually as he wills or

  629. just as the body is one and has many members,

  630. and all the members of the body, though many, are

  631. one body, so it is with Christ, For in one

  632. spirit we were all baptized into one body. Jews are Greeks,

  633. slaves are free, and all were made to drink of

  634. one spirit.

  635. For the body does not consist of one member, but

  636. of many. If the foot should say, because I am

  637. not a hand, I do not belong to the body,

  638. that would not make it any less a part of

  639. the body. And if the ear should say, because I

  640. am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,

  641. that would not make it any less a part of

  642. the body. If the whole body they were an eye,

  643. where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole

  644. body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?

  645. But as it is, God arranged the members in the body,

  646. each one of them as he chose. If all were

  647. a single member, where would the body be? As it is?

  648. There are many parts yet one body. The eye cannot

  649. say to the hand, I have no need of you,

  650. nor again the head to the feet, I have no

  651. need of you.

  652. On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem

  653. to be weaker are indispensable. And on those parts of

  654. the body that we think less honorable we bestow the

  655. greater honor. And our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,

  656. which our more presentable parts do not require. But God

  657. has so composed the body, given greater honor to the

  658. part that lacked it, that there may be no division

  659. in the body, but that the members may have the

  660. same care for one another.

  661. If one member suffers, all suffer together. If one member

  662. is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the Body

  663. of Christ, and individually members of it. And God has

  664. appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers,

  665. Then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various

  666. kinds of tongues. Are all apostles, are all prophets. Are

  667. all teachers? Do all work miracles, do all possessed gifts

  668. of healing, Do all speak with tongues, do all interpret,

  669. But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show

  670. you a still more excellent way. First Corinthians thirteen. If

  671. I and the tongues of men and of angels, but

  672. have not love, I am a noisy gong or a

  673. clanging symbol. And if I have prophetic powers and understand

  674. all mysteries and all knowledge, And if I have all

  675. faith so as to remove mountains, but have not love,

  676. I am nothing. If I give away all I have,

  677. and if I deliver up my body to be burned,

  678. but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient

  679. and kind. Love does not envy or boast. It is

  680. not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its

  681. own way. It is not irritable or resentful. It does

  682. not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love

  683. bears all things, believes all things, hopes, all things endures

  684. all things. Love never end. As for prophecies, they will

  685. pass away. As for tongues they will cease. As for knowledge,

  686. it will pass away. For we know in part, and

  687. we prophesy in part. But when the perfect comes, the

  688. partial will pass away. When I was a child, I

  689. spoke like a child. I thought like a child, I

  690. reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I

  691. gave up childish ways. For now we see in a

  692. mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know

  693. in part. Then I shall know fully, even as I

  694. have been fully known. So now, faith, hope, and love

  695. abide these three. But the greatest of these is love.

  696. First Corinthians fourteen.

  697. Pursue love and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that

  698. you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue

  699. speaks not to men but to God, for no one

  700. understands him, but he utters mysteries in the spirit.

  701. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people,

  702. for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who

  703. speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one

  704. who prophesies builds up the church. Now, I want you

  705. all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy.

  706. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who

  707. speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church

  708. may be built up. Now, brothers, if I come to

  709. you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless

  710. I bring you some revelation or knowledge, or prophecy or teaching.

  711. If even lifeless instruments such as the flute or the

  712. harp do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know

  713. what is plained? And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound,

  714. who will get ready for battle? So with yourselves, If

  715. with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible,

  716. how will anyone know what is said? For you will

  717. be speaking into the air. There are doubtless many different

  718. languages in the world, and none is without meaning. But

  719. if I do not know the meaning of the language,

  720. I will be a foreigner to the speaker, and the

  721. speaker a foreigner to me. So with yourselves. Since you

  722. are eager for manifestations of the spirit, strive to excel

  723. in building up the church. Therefore, one who speaks in

  724. a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. For

  725. if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but

  726. my mind is unfruitful. What am I to do. I

  727. will pray with my spirits, but I will pray with

  728. my mind. Also, I will sing praise with my spirit,

  729. but I will sing with my mind also. Otherwise, if

  730. you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in

  731. the position of an outsider say amen to your thanksgiving

  732. when he does not know what you are saying. For

  733. you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other

  734. person is not being built up. I thank God that

  735. I speak in tongues more than all of you. Nevertheless,

  736. in church, I would rather speak five words with my

  737. mind in order to instruct others than ten thousand words

  738. in a tongue.

  739. Brothers, do not be children in your thinking, be infants

  740. and evil that in your thinking be mature. And the

  741. law it is written by people of strange tongues and

  742. by the lips of foreigners. While I speak to these people,

  743. and even then they will not listen to me, he

  744. says the law.

  745. Thus, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers,

  746. while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.

  747. If therefore, the whole church comes together, and all speak

  748. in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not

  749. say that you are out of your minds. But if

  750. all prophesy and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is

  751. convicted by all. He is called to account by all.

  752. The secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so falling

  753. on his face, he will worship God and declare that

  754. God is really among you.

  755. What, then, brothers, when you come together, each one has

  756. a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue.

  757. Or an interpretation.

  758. Let all things be done for building up.

  759. If any speak in a tongue, let there be only

  760. two or at most three, and each in turn, and

  761. let someone interpret. But if there is no one to interpret,

  762. let each of them keep silent in church and speak

  763. to himself and to God. Let two or three prophets speak,

  764. and let the others weigh what is said. If a

  765. revelation is made to another sitting there, Let the first

  766. be silent, for you can all prophesy one by one,

  767. so that all may learn and all be encouraged. And

  768. the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets, for God

  769. is not a god of confusion, but of peace. As

  770. in all the churches of the saints. The women should

  771. keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted

  772. to speak, but should be in submission. As the law

  773. also says, if there is anything they desire to learn,

  774. let them ask their husbands at home, For it is

  775. shameful for a woman to speak in church. Or was

  776. it from you that the word of God came? Or

  777. are you the only ones it has reached. If anyone

  778. thinks that he is a prophet or spiritual, he should

  779. acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are

  780. a command of the Lord. If anyone does not recognize this,

  781. he is not recognized.

  782. So, my brothers earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not

  783. forbid speaking in tongues. But all things should be done

  784. decently and in order.

  785. First Corinthians fifteen. Now I would remind you, brothers of

  786. the gospel I preach to you, which you received in

  787. which you stand and by which you are being saved,

  788. if you hold fast to the word I preach to you,

  789. unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you,

  790. as of first importance what I also received, That Christ

  791. died for our sins in a ordance with the scriptures,

  792. that he was buried, that he was raised on the

  793. third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he

  794. appeared to Sephis, then to the twelve. Then he appeared

  795. to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most

  796. of whom are still alive, though some had fallen asleep.

  797. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles,

  798. last of all as to one untimely born. He appeared

  799. also to me. For I am the least of the apostles,

  800. unworthy to be called an apostles, because I persecuted the

  801. Church of God. But by the grace of God I

  802. am what I am, and His grace toward me was

  803. not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than

  804. any of them, though it was not I but the

  805. grace of God that is with me, Whether then it

  806. was I or they. So we preach, and so you believed.

  807. Now if Christ is proclaimed is raised from the dead,

  808. how can some of you say that there is no

  809. resurrection of the dead. But if there is no resurrection

  810. of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.

  811. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching

  812. is in vain, and your faith is in vain. We

  813. are even found to be misrepresenting God because we testified

  814. about God that he raised.

  815. Christ, whom he did not raise.

  816. If it is true that the dead are not raised,

  817. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ

  818. has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised,

  819. your faith is futile, and you are still in your sins.

  820. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

  821. If in Christ we have hope in this life only

  822. we are of all people most to be pitied.

  823. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead,

  824. the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For

  825. as by a man came death by a man has

  826. come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in

  827. Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be

  828. made alive. But each in his own order. Christ the

  829. first fruits. Then it is coming those who belong to Christ.

  830. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to

  831. God the Father, after destroying every rule and every authority

  832. and power. For he must reign until he has put

  833. all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to

  834. be destroyed is death. For God has put all things

  835. in subjection under his feet. But when it says all

  836. things are put in subjection, it is plain that he

  837. is accepted who put all things in subjection under him.

  838. When all things are subjected to him, then the son

  839. himself will also be subjected to him who put all

  840. things in subjection under him, that God may be all

  841. in all. Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized

  842. on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not

  843. raised at all? Why are people baptized on their behalf?

  844. Why are we in danger? Every hour? I protest, brothers,

  845. by my pride in You, which I have in Christ Jesus,

  846. our Lord. I die every day. What do I gain

  847. if humanly speaking? I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If

  848. the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink,

  849. for tomorrow we die. Do not be deceived bad company,

  850. ruins good morals. Wake up from your drunken stupor as

  851. is right, and do not go on sinning, for some

  852. have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

  853. But someone will ask, how are the dead raised? With

  854. what kind of body do they come? You, foolish person.

  855. What you sew does not come to life unless it dies.

  856. And what you sow is not the body that is

  857. to be, but a bear, colonel, for perhaps of wheat

  858. or of some other grain. But God gives it a

  859. body as he is chosen. And to each kind of

  860. seed its own body.

  861. For not all flesh is the same. But there is

  862. one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds,

  863. and another for fish. There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies.

  864. But the glory of the heavenly is of one kind,

  865. and the glory of the earthly is of another. There

  866. is one glory of the sun, and another glory of

  867. the moon, and another glory of the stars. For star

  868. differs from star in glory. So it is with the

  869. resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable. What

  870. is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor it

  871. is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it

  872. is raised in power. It is sown a natural body,

  873. it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a

  874. natural body, there is also a spiritual body. Thus it

  875. is written, the first man Adam became a living being.

  876. The last atom became a life giving spirit.

  877. But it is not the spiritual that is first, but

  878. the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was

  879. from the earth, a man of dust. The second man

  880. is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so

  881. also are those who are of the dust, And as

  882. is the Man of heaven, so also are those who

  883. are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image

  884. of the Man of dust, we shall also bear the

  885. image of the Man of heaven.

  886. I tell you this, brothers, flesh and blood cannot inherit

  887. the Kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold,

  888. I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep,

  889. but we shall all be changed in a moment, in

  890. the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet, For

  891. the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable,

  892. and we shall be changed.

  893. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and

  894. this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable

  895. puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality,

  896. then shall come to pass the saying that it's written,

  897. death is swallowed up in victory, Oh death, Where is

  898. your victory, Oh death.

  899. Where is your sting? The sting of death is sin,

  900. and the power of sin is the law. But thanks

  901. be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord,

  902. Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always

  903. abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in

  904. the Lord your labor is not in vain. First Corinthians sixteen.

  905. Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed

  906. the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do.

  907. On the first day of every week. Each of you

  908. is to put something aside and store it up as

  909. he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting

  910. when I come. And when I arrive, I will send

  911. those from you a credit by letter to carry your

  912. gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable that I should go, also,

  913. they will accompany me. I will visit you after passing

  914. through Macedonia, for I intend to pass through Macedonia, and

  915. perhaps I will stay with you, or even spend the winter,

  916. so that you may help me on my journey wherever

  917. I go, for I do not want to see you

  918. now just in passing. I hope to spend some time

  919. with you if the Lord permits. But I will stay

  920. in Ephesus until Pentecost, for a wide door for effective

  921. work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

  922. When Timothy comes, see that you put him at ease

  923. among you, for he is doing the work of the

  924. Lord as I am. So let no one despise him.

  925. Help him on his way in peace, that he may

  926. return to me, For I am expecting him with the brothers. Now.

  927. Concerning our brother Apollus, I strongly urged him to visit

  928. you with the other brothers, but it was not at

  929. all his will to come. Now, he will come when

  930. he has opportunity. Be watchful, stand firm in the faith,

  931. act like men, be strong. Let all that you do

  932. be done in love. Now I urge you, brothers. You

  933. know that the household of Stephanus were the first converts

  934. in Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the

  935. service of the saints. Be subject to such as these

  936. and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at

  937. the coming of Stephanus and Fortunatus and Achaicus. Because they

  938. have made up for your absence. For the they refreshed

  939. my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men.

  940. The churches of Asia send you greetings. Aquala and Chrisca,

  941. together with the church in their house, send you hearty

  942. greetings in the Lord. All the brothers send you greetings.

  943. Greet one another with a holy kiss.

  944. I Paul write this greeting with my own hand. If

  945. anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be

  946. accursed Our Lord. Come the grace of the Lord. Jesus

  947. be with you. My love be with you all in

  948. Christ Jesus Amen.
