  1. Niomayah Namayah one the words of Niemiah, the son of Hekalayah.

  2. Now it happened in the month of Kislev in the

  3. twentieth year. As I was in Susa, the capital that Hanay,

  4. and I one of my brothers.

  5. Came with certain men from Judah.

  6. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who

  7. had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem.

  8. And they said to me.

  9. The remnant there in the province who had survived the

  10. exile is in great trouble and chain. The wall of

  11. Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.

  12. As soon as I heard these words, I sat down

  13. and wept and mourned for days. And I continued fasting,

  14. praying before the God of Heaven. And I said, O, Lord,

  15. God of Heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps

  16. covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and

  17. keep his commandments. Let your ear be attentive and your

  18. eyes open to hear the.

  19. Prayer of your servant that I now pray before you

  20. day and night for the people of Israel, your servants,

  21. confessing the sins of the people of Israel.

  22. Which we have sinned against you.

  23. Eve, when I and my father's house have sinned. We

  24. have acted very corruptly against you, and have not kept

  25. the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded

  26. your servant, Moses. Remember the words that you commanded your servant, Moses, saying,

  27. if you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the

  28. people's spots. If you return to me and keep my

  29. commandments and do them. Though your outcasts are in the

  30. uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them

  31. and bring them to the place that I have chosen.

  32. To make my name Dwell. There they are your servants.

  33. And your people, whom you have redeemed by your great

  34. power and by your strong hand. Oh Lord, let your

  35. ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and

  36. to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear

  37. your name. And give success to your servant today, and

  38. grant him mercy.

  39. In the sight of this man. Now. I was cut

  40. bearer to the king.

  41. Nemiah two.

  42. In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of

  43. King Artaxerxes. When wine was before him, I took up

  44. the wine and gave it to the King. Now I

  45. had not been sad in his presence. And the King

  46. said to.

  47. Me, why is your face sad, saying you are not sick.

  48. This is nothing but sadness of the heart. Then I

  49. was very much afraid.

  50. I said to the King, let the king live forever.

  51. Why should not my face be sad when the city,

  52. the place of my father's graves, lies in ruins, and

  53. its gates have been destroyed by fire. Then the King

  54. said to me, what are you requesting? So I pray

  55. to the God of Heaven. And I said to the King,

  56. if it pleases the King, and if your servant has

  57. found favor in your sight, that you send me to

  58. you to the city of my father's graves, that I

  59. may rebuild it. And the King said to me, the

  60. queen sitting beside him, how.

  61. Long will you be gone?

  62. And when will you return?

  63. So it pleased the King to send me when I

  64. had given him a time, and I said to the King,

  65. if it pleases the King, let letters be given me

  66. to the governors of the province beyond the river, that

  67. they may let me pass through until I come to Judah.

  68. And a letter to Aesa, the keeper of the King's forest,

  69. that he may give me timber to make beans for

  70. the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for

  71. the war of the city, and for the house that

  72. I shall occupy. And the King granted me what I

  73. asked for. The good hand of my God was upon me.

  74. Then I came to the governors of the province beyond

  75. the river and gave them the king's lefe. Now the

  76. King had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen.

  77. But when Sanbalath the Horrnite and Tobia the Ammonite servant,

  78. heard this, it displeased them greatly that someone had come

  79. to seek the welfare of the people of Israel. So

  80. I went to Jerusalem and was there three days. Then

  81. I arose in the night, I and a few men

  82. with me, and I told no one what my God

  83. had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There

  84. was no animal with me but the one on which

  85. I rode. I went out by night by the valley

  86. gate to the dragon spring and to the dung gate,

  87. and I inspected the wars of Jerusalem that were broken down,

  88. and its gates that have been destroyed by fire. Then

  89. I went on to the fountain gate and to the

  90. king's pool, but there was no room for the animal

  91. that was under me to pass. Then I went up

  92. in the night by the valley and inspected the wall.

  93. And I turned back and entered by the valley gate,

  94. and so returned. And the officials did not know where

  95. I had gone or what I was doing. And I

  96. had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles,

  97. the officials, and the rest who were to do the work.

  98. Then I said to them, you see the trouble we're in,

  99. how Jerusalem lies in ruins, with its gates burned. Come

  100. let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may

  101. no longer suffer derision. And I told them of the

  102. hand of my God that had been upon me for good,

  103. and also of the words that the king had spoken

  104. to me. And they said, let us rise up and build.

  105. So they strengthened their hands for the good work. Between

  106. Sanbalat the Horrornite, and to Baya the Ammonite servant, and

  107. Gasham the Arab.

  108. Heard of it.

  109. They jeered at us and despised us, and said, what

  110. is this thing that you are doing?

  111. Are you rebelling against the king.

  112. Then I replied to them. The God of Heaven will

  113. make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build.

  114. But you have no portion, or rite or claim in.

  115. Jerusalem Nehemiah three. Then Eliaship the high Priest, rose up

  116. with his brothers the priests, and they built the sheep Gate.

  117. They consecrated it and set its doors. They consecrated it

  118. as far as the Tower of the Hundred, as far

  119. as the tower of hennahel. Next to him, the men

  120. of Jericho built, and next to them Zachar, the son

  121. of Imrai built. The sons of Hassanea built the fish Gate.

  122. They laid its beams and set its doors, its bolts,

  123. and its bars. And next to them Merimoth the son

  124. of Rayah, son of Hakkas, repaired, and next to them

  125. Masulam the son of Berekaya, son of Mashesabio, repaired. And

  126. next to them Zadok the son of Beyona repaired. And

  127. next to them the Takoites repaired. But their nobles would

  128. not stoop to serve their lord. Joyada the son of Pasah,

  129. and Misulam the son of Besadea repaired the gate of Yeshna.

  130. They laid its beams and set its.

  131. Doors, its bolts, and its bars.

  132. And next to them repaired Melitiah the Gibeonite and Jayden

  133. the Maranathite, the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah the

  134. seat of the governor of the province beyond the river

  135. next to them. Uzzia the son of Herhea goldsmiths, repaired.

  136. Next to him, Hannaniyah, one of the perfumers, repaired, and

  137. they restored Jerusalem as far as the broad wall. Next

  138. to them. Rafea, the son of her ruler of half

  139. the district of Jerusalem, repaired next to them. Judeah, the

  140. son of Harumath, repaired opposite his house, and next to him.

  141. Hattish the son of Hashebaniah repaired. Malchija, the son of Haram,

  142. and Hashib the son of Paieth Moab repaired another section

  143. and the tower of the ovens next to him. Shalem

  144. the son of Halahash, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, repaired.

  145. He and his daughters, Hanan and the inhabitants of Zanoah

  146. repaired the valley gate. They rebuilt it and set its doors,

  147. its bolts, and its bars, and repaired a thousand cubits

  148. of the wall as far as the dungate. Malchaija the

  149. son of Recab, ruler of the district of beth Hackeram,

  150. repaired the dung gate.

  151. He rebuilt it.

  152. And set its doors, its bolts and its bars. And

  153. Shalam the son of Colhosa, ruler of the district of Mizpah,

  154. repaired the fountain gate. He rebuilt it and covered it,

  155. and set.

  156. Its doors, its bolts and its bars.

  157. And he built the wall of the pool of Sheila

  158. of the King's garden as far as the stairs that

  159. go down from the city of David. After him, Nehemiah,

  160. the son of Asbug, ruler of half the district of Bethsur,

  161. repaired to a point opposite the tombs of David, as

  162. far as the artificial pool, and as far as the

  163. House of the Mighty Men. After him, the Levites repaired

  164. Rheem the son of Benai. Next to him, Hashebayah, ruler

  165. of half the district of Kailah, repaired for his district.

  166. After him, their brothers repaired Babbi the son of Hanadad,

  167. ruler of half the district of Kailah. Next to him, Isser,

  168. the son of Jeshua, ruler of Mispah repaired another section

  169. opposite the ascent to the armory at the buttress. After him,

  170. Barrik the son of Zabi repaired another section from the

  171. buttress to the door of the house of Eliashib, the

  172. high priest. After him, Merimoth the son of Eriah, son

  173. of Hakkas, repaired another section from the door of the

  174. house of Eliashib to the end of the house of Eliaship.

  175. After him, the priests the men of the surrounding area

  176. repaired after them. Benjamin and Hasheb repaired opposite their house.

  177. After them, Azariah the son of Mayasia, son of Ananaiyah,

  178. repaired beside his own house. After him, Benuai the son

  179. of Hanadad repaired another section from the house of Azariah

  180. to the buttress and to the corner. Pelal the son

  181. of Uzai, repaired opposite the buttress and the tower projecting

  182. from the upper house of the king at the court

  183. of the Guard. After him, Pedea the son of Peirosh

  184. and the temple servants living on Ophel repaired to a

  185. point opposite the water gate on the east and the

  186. projecting tower. After him, the Takoites repaired another section opposite

  187. the great projecting tower as far as the wall of

  188. Ophel above the horse gate. The priests repaired, each one

  189. opposite his own house after them. Zadok the son of Imer,

  190. repaired opposite his own house after him. Sheemeya, the son

  191. of Shekhnayah, the keeper of the east gate, repaired after him.

  192. Han and Ayah, the son of Shlemaiyah, and Hanan, the

  193. sixth son of Zeylaf, repaired another section after him. Meshulam,

  194. the son of Berachiah, repaired opposite his chamber. After him.

  195. Malchaija, one of the goldsmiths.

  196. Repaired as far as the house of the temple servants

  197. and of the merchants opposite the muster gate, and to

  198. the upper chamber of the corner, and between the upper

  199. chamber of the corner and the sheep gate, the goldsmiths

  200. and the merchants repaired. Nehemiah four.

  201. Now, when Sambalat heard that we were building the wall,

  202. he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at

  203. the Jews, and he said, in the presence of his

  204. brothers and of the army of Samaria.

  205. What are these feeble Jews?

  206. Doing?

  207. Will they restore it for themselves?

  208. Will they sacrifice?

  209. Will they finish up in a day?

  210. Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish?

  211. Can burn ones?

  212. At that to Buya the Ammonite was beside him, and

  213. he said.

  214. What they are building, If a fox goes upon it,

  215. he will break down their stone wall.

  216. Here, Oh our God, for we are despised. Turn back

  217. their taunt on their own heads, and give them up

  218. to be plundered in a land where.

  219. They are captives.

  220. Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin

  221. be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked

  222. you to anger in the presence of the builders. So

  223. we built the wall, and all the war was joined

  224. together to half its height. For the people had a

  225. mind to work. But when san Balat and Tobia, and

  226. the Arabs, and the Ammonites and the Ashtonites heard that

  227. the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward,

  228. and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they

  229. were very angry, and they all plotted together to come

  230. and fight against Jerusalem and to cause.

  231. Confusion in it.

  232. And we prayed to our God and set a guard

  233. as a protection against them day and night. In Judo,

  234. it was said the strength of those who bear the

  235. burdens is failing.

  236. There is too much rubble by ourselves. We will not

  237. be able to rebuild the wall.

  238. And our enemies said, they will not know or see

  239. till we come among them and kill them and stop

  240. the work.

  241. At that time, the Jews who lived near them came

  242. from all directions and said to us ten times, you

  243. must return to us. So in the lowest parts of

  244. the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed.

  245. The people by their clans, with.

  246. Their swords, their spears, and their bones. And I looked

  247. and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials,

  248. and to the rest of the people, do not.

  249. Be afraid of them.

  250. Remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight

  251. for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and

  252. your homes. When our enemies heard that it was known

  253. to us, and that God had frustrated their plan, we

  254. all returned to.

  255. The wall, each to his work.

  256. From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction,

  257. and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail.

  258. And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah

  259. who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens

  260. were loaded in such a way that each labored on

  261. the work with.

  262. One hand and held his weapon with the other.

  263. And each of the builders had his swords strapped at his.

  264. Side while he built.

  265. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me, and

  266. I said to the nobles, and to the officials, and

  267. to the rest of the people, the work is great

  268. and widely spread, and we are separated.

  269. On the wall, far from one another.

  270. In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet,

  271. rally to a fair our. God will fight for us.

  272. So we labored at the work, and half of them

  273. held the spears from the break of dawn until the

  274. stars came out. I also said to the people at

  275. that time, let every man and his servant pass the

  276. night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for

  277. us by night, and may labor by day. So neither I,

  278. nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of

  279. the guard who followed me, none of us took off

  280. our clothes. Each kept his weapon at his right hand.

  281. Nehemiah five. Now there arose a great outcry of the

  282. people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers. For

  283. there were those who said, with our sons and our daughters,

  284. we are many, so let us get grain that we

  285. may eat and keep alive. There were also those who said,

  286. we are.

  287. Mortgaging our fields, our vineyards at our houses to get

  288. grained because of the famine.

  289. And there were those who said.

  290. We have borrowed money for the king's tax on our

  291. fields and our vineyards.

  292. Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers.

  293. Our children are as their children.

  294. Yet we are.

  295. Forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves.

  296. And some of our daughters have already been enslaved. But

  297. it is not in our power to help it, for

  298. other men have our fields and our vineyards.

  299. Was very angry when I heard the outcry and these words.

  300. I took counsel with myself, and I brought charges against

  301. the nobles and the officials. I said to them, you

  302. are exacting interest each from his brother. And I held

  303. a great assembly against them, and said to them, we,

  304. as far as we are able, to have brought back

  305. our Jewish brothers who have been sold to the nations.

  306. But you even sell your brothers that they may.

  307. Be sold to us.

  308. They were silent and could not find a word to

  309. say so, I said, the thing that you are doing

  310. is not good. Ought you not to walk in the

  311. fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the

  312. nations our enemies. Moreover, I and my brothers and my

  313. servants are lending them money and grain. Let us abandon

  314. this exacting of interest. Return to them this very day

  315. their fields, their vineyards, their olive orchards, and their houses,

  316. and the percentage of money, brain, wine, and oil that

  317. you have been exacting from them.

  318. Then they said, we will restore these and require nothing

  319. from them.

  320. We will do as you say.

  321. And I called the priests and made them swear to

  322. do if they had promised. I also shook out the

  323. fold of my garment and said, so, may God shake

  324. out every man from his house and from his labor

  325. who does not keep this promise, So may he be

  326. shaken out and emptied.

  327. And all the assemblies said, Amen, ah Man, and praise

  328. the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.

  329. Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be

  330. their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth

  331. year to the thirty second year of Artaxerxes, the king,

  332. twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the food

  333. allowance of the governor. The former governors who were before

  334. me laid heavy burdens on the people and took from

  335. them for their daily ration forty shekels of silver. Even

  336. their servants lauded it over the people, but I did

  337. not do so because of the fear of God. I

  338. also persevered in the work on this wall, and we

  339. acquired no land, and all my servants were gathered there

  340. for the work. Moreover, there were at my table one

  341. hundred and fifty men, Jews and officials, besides those who

  342. came to us from the nations that were around us.

  343. Now, what was prepared at.

  344. My expense for each day was one oxen fixed choice,

  345. sheep and birds, and every ten days all kinds of

  346. wine in abundance. Yet for all this I did not

  347. demand the food allowance of the governor, because the service

  348. was too heavy on this people. Remember, for my good,

  349. oh my God, all that I have done.

  350. For the people.

  351. Neo Maya six.

  352. Now, when san Balat and Tobiah and Gsham, the Arab

  353. and the rest of our enemies heard that I had

  354. built the wall and that there was no breach left

  355. in it. Although up to that time, I had not

  356. set up the doors in the gates. San Balat and

  357. Gsham sent to me saying.

  358. Come, let us meet together at Hakafum in the plane

  359. of Ono.

  360. But they intended to do me harm. And I sent

  361. messengers to them saying, I'm doing a great work and

  362. I cannot come down. Why should the works stop while

  363. I leave it and come down to you? And they

  364. sent to me four times in this way, and I

  365. answered them in the same manner. In the same way.

  366. San Balat for the fifth time sent his servant to

  367. me with an open letter in his hand.

  368. In it was written it.

  369. Is reported among the nations, and Geshim also says it

  370. that you and the Jews intend to rebel. That is

  371. why you are building the wall. And according to these reports,

  372. you wish to become their king. And you have also

  373. set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem. There

  374. is a king in Judah, and now the king will

  375. hear of these reports. So now come and let us

  376. take counsel together.

  377. Then I sent to him saying, no such things as

  378. you say have been done, for you are inventing them

  379. out of your own mind. For they all wanted to

  380. frighten us, thinking their hands will drop from the work

  381. and it will not be done. But now, oh God,

  382. strengthen my hands. Now, when I went into the house

  383. of Shameya, the son of de Layah, son of Mehitabel,

  384. who was confined to his home, he said.

  385. Let us meet together in the house of God.

  386. Within the temple.

  387. Let us close the doors of the temple, for they

  388. are coming to kill you. They are coming to kill

  389. you by night.

  390. But I said, should such a man as I run away,

  391. and what man such as I could go into the

  392. temple and live, I will not go in. And I

  393. understood and saw that God had not sent him, but

  394. he had pronounced the prophecy against me, because Tobiah and

  395. Sambalad had hired him for this purpose. He was hired

  396. that I should be afraid and act in this way

  397. and thin, and so they could give me a bad

  398. name in order to taunt me. Remember Tobia and Sambalat,

  399. Oh my God, according to these things that they did,

  400. and also the prophetess Noahdiah and the rest of the

  401. prophets who wanted to make me afraid. So the war

  402. was finished on the twenty fifth day of the month

  403. Ilu in fifty two days. And when all our enemies

  404. heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid

  405. and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived

  406. that this work had been accomplished with the help of

  407. our God. Moreover, in those days, the nobles of Judah

  408. sent many letters to Tobaia, and Tobia's letters came to them,

  409. for many in Judah were bound by oath to him

  410. because he was the son in law of Shekaniah, the

  411. son of Error, and his son Jihohman had taken the

  412. daughter of Meshulum.

  413. The son of Berakiah, as his wife.

  414. Also, they spoke of his good deeds in my presence

  415. and reported my words to him, and Tobias sent letters

  416. to make me afraid.

  417. Nehemiah seven, Now, when the wall had been built, and

  418. I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers,

  419. and the Levites had been appointed, I gave my brother

  420. hen and I and Hannaanaiah, the governor of the castle.

  421. Charge over Jerusalem. For he was a more faithful and

  422. god fearing man than many. And I said to them,

  423. let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the

  424. sun is hot. And while they are still standing.

  425. Guard.

  426. Let them shut and bar the doors. Appoint guard gods

  427. from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem that God posts, and

  428. some in front of their own homes. The city was

  429. wide and large, but the people within it were few,

  430. and no houses had been rebuilt. Then my God put

  431. it into my heart to assemble the nobles and the

  432. officials and the people to be enrolled by genealogy. And

  494. the sons of Darkhan, the sons of Giddel, the sons

  495. of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattel, the sons of pocarith

  496. has Abaem, the sons of Aminem. All the temple servants

  497. and the sons of Solomon servants were three hundred ninety two.

  498. The following were those who came up from Telmila, Telharsha,

  499. carab Aden, and Immer, but they could not prove their

  500. father's houses nor their descent, whether they belonged to Israeli.

  501. The sons of Delaya, the sons of Tobiah, the sons

  502. of Nakota six hundred forty two, also of the priests,

  503. the sons of Hobeya, the sons of Hakkas, the sons

  504. of Barzilai, who had taken a wife of the daughters

  505. of Barzili the Gileadite, and was called by their name.

  506. These sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies,

  507. but it was not found there, so they were excluded

  508. from the priesthood as unclean. The governor told them that

  509. they were not to partake of the most holy food

  510. until a priest with Urim and Thumim should arise. The

  511. whole assembly together was forty two thousand, three hundred sixty

  512. besides their male and female servants, of whom there were

  513. seven thousand, three hundred thirty seven, and they had two

  514. hundred forty five singers, male and female. Their horses were

  515. seven hundred thirty six, their mules two hundred forty five,

  516. their camels four hundred thirty five, and their donkeys six thousand,

  517. seven hundred twenty. Now, some of the heads of father's

  518. houses gave to the work. The governor gave to the

  519. treasury one thousand derrecks of gold, fifty basins, thirty priests garments,

  520. and five hundred miners of silver. And some of the

  521. heads of father's houses gave into the treasury of the

  522. work thousand derrecks of gold and two two hundred minas

  523. of silver. And what the rest of the people gave

  524. was twenty thousand derrecks of gold, two thousand minas of silver,

  525. and sixty seven priests garments. So the priests, the Levites,

  526. the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants,

  527. and all Israel lived in their towns. And when the

  528. seventh month had come, the people of Israel were in

  529. their towns Nehemiah eight and all the people gathered as

  530. one man into the square before the watergate, and they

  531. told Ezra the Scribe to bring the Book of the

  532. Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. So

  533. Ezra the Priest brought the Law before the assembly, both

  534. men and women and all who could understand what they heard,

  535. on the first day of the seventh month, and he

  536. read from it, facing the square before the watergate, from

  537. early morning until midday, in the presence of the men

  538. and the women, and those who could understand, and the

  539. ears of all the people were attentive to the book

  540. of the Law. And Ezra the Scribe stood on a

  541. wooden platform that they had made for the purpose, and

  542. beside him stood Mattathiah, Sima, aya Uriah, Hilkiah, and Mayesia

  543. on his right hand, and Pedea, Michael, Malkaija Haitiam, Hashibadna Zechariah,

  544. and Misschulem on his left hand. And Ezra opened the

  545. book in the sight of all the people, for he

  546. was above all the people. And as he opened it,

  547. all the people stood, and Ezra blessed the Lord, the

  548. Great God, and all all the people answered, Amen, am Men,

  549. lifting up their hands, and they bowed their heads and

  550. worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Also

  551. Jeshua Bini, Sherebiah, Jamin Acab, Shabbathai, Hodiah, Mayosiah, Kalita, Azariah,

  552. josebad Hainan, Pellaliah. The Levites helped the people to understand

  553. the law. While the people remained in their places. They

  554. read from the book from the Law of God clearly,

  555. and they gave the sense so that the people understood

  556. the reading. And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra,

  557. the priest inscribe, and the Levites who taught the people,

  558. said to all the people, this.

  559. Day is holy to the Lord your God.

  560. Do not mourn or weep.

  561. For all the people wept as they heard the words

  562. of the law. Then he said to them.

  563. Go your way, eat the fat, and drink sweet wine,

  564. and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for

  565. this day is holy to our Lord. And do not

  566. be grieved for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

  567. So the Levites calmed all the people, saying.

  568. Be quiet, for this day is holy.

  569. Do not be grieved.

  570. And all the people went their way to eat and drink,

  571. and to send portions, and to make great rejoicing, because

  572. they had understood the words that were declared to them.

  573. On the second day, the heads of Father's houses of

  574. all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came

  575. together to Ezra the Scribe, in order to study the

  576. words of the Law. And they found it written in

  577. the Law that the Lord had commanded by Moses that

  578. the people of Israel should dwell in booths during the

  579. feast of the seventh Month, and that they should proclaim

  580. it and publish it in all their towns, and in Jerusalem.

  581. Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive,

  582. wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths.

  583. As it is written.

  584. So the people went out and brought them and made

  585. booths for themselves, each on his roof and in their courts,

  586. and in the courts of the House of God, and

  587. in the square at the watergate, and in the square

  588. at the gate of Ephraim, and all the assembly of

  589. those who had returned from the captivity made booths and

  590. lived in the booths. For from the days of Jeshua,

  591. the son of Nune to that day the people of

  592. Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing.

  593. And day by day from the first day to the

  594. last day, he read from the book of the Law

  595. of God. They kept the feast seven days, and on

  596. the eighth day there was a solemn assembly according to

  597. the rule Nehemiah nine. Now, on the twenty fourth day

  598. of this month, the people of Israel were assembled with

  599. fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth on their heads.

  600. And the Israelites separated themselves from all foreigners and stood

  601. and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers.

  602. And they stood up in their place and read from

  603. the book of the Law of the Lord their God.

  604. For a quarter of the day. For another quarter of

  605. it they made confessions and worshiped.

  606. The Lord their God.

  607. On the stairs of the Levites stood Jeshua Beini, Cadmeel, Schebniah, Bunai,

  608. Sherebiah Beini, and Cananae. And they cried with a loud

  609. voice to the Lord their God. Then the Levites Jeshua, Cadmeo, Beinikshebaniah, Scherebiah, Odiah, Chebniah,

  610. and Pethehiah said.

  611. Stand up and bless the Lord your God, from everlasting

  612. to everlasting.

  613. Bless it be your glorious name, which is exalted above all.

  614. Blessing and praise. You are the Lord. You alone. You

  615. have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host,

  616. the earth and all that is hon it, the seas

  617. and all that is in them. And you preserve all

  618. of them, and the Host of Heaven worships you.

  619. You are the Lord, the God who chose Abram and

  620. brought him out of her of the Chaldeans that gave

  621. him the name Abraham. You found his heart faithful before

  622. you and made with him the covenant to give to

  623. you was offspring the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite,

  624. the Amorite, the Perizite, the Gebucite, and the Gergoshite. And

  625. you have kept your promise, for you are righteous. And

  626. you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and

  627. heard their cry at the Red Sea, and performed signs

  628. and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all

  629. the people of his land. For you knew that they

  630. acted arrogantly against our fathers. And you made a name

  631. for yourself as it is to this day. And you

  632. divided the sea before them, so that they went through

  633. the midst of the sea on dry land. And you

  634. cast their pursuers into the depths as a stone into

  635. mighty waters. By a pillar of cloud you led them

  636. in the day, and by a pillar of fire in

  637. the night, to light for them the way in which

  638. they should go. You came down on Mount Sinai and

  639. spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules

  640. and true laws, good statutes and commandments. And you made

  641. known to them your holy Sabbath, and commanded them commandments

  642. and statutes and a law by Moses, your servant. You

  643. gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, and brought

  644. water for them out of the rock for their thirsty.

  645. And you told them to go in to possess the

  646. land that you had sworn to give them them.

  647. But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their

  648. neck and did not obey your commandments. They refused to

  649. obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you

  650. performed among them. But they stiffened their neck and appointed

  651. a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt.

  652. But you are a god ready to forgive, gracious and merciful,

  653. slow to anger, and abounding and steadfast love, and did

  654. not forsake them, even when they had made for themselves

  655. it was a golden cap, and said, this is your God,

  656. who brought you up out of Egypt, and had committed

  657. great blasphemies. You, in your great mercies, did not forsake

  658. them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead

  659. them in the way, did not depart from them by day,

  660. nor the pillar of fire by night to light for

  661. them the way by which they should go. You gave

  662. your good spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold

  663. your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for

  664. their thirst.

  665. Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they

  666. lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their

  667. feet did not swell. And you gave them kingdoms and peoples,

  668. and a lot into them every corner. So they took

  669. possession of the land of Sihon, king of Heshpon, and

  670. the land of Balm, King of Baisham, you multiplied their

  671. children as the stars of heaven, and you brought them

  672. into the land that you had told their fathers to

  673. enter and possess.

  674. So the descendants went in and possessed the land. And

  675. you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites,

  676. and gave them into their hands with their kings and

  677. the peoples of the land, that they might do with

  678. them as they would.

  679. And they captured.

  680. Fortified cities and a rich land, and took possession of

  681. houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards,

  682. olive orchards, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate

  683. and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in

  684. your great goodness.

  685. Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you, and cast

  686. your law behind their back, killed your prophets who had

  687. warned them in order to turn them back to you,

  688. and they committed great blasphemies.

  689. Therefore you gave them.

  690. Into the hand of their enemies, who made them suffer.

  691. And in the time of their sufferings, they cried out

  692. to you, and you heard them from heaven, and according

  693. to your great mercies you gave them saviors who saved

  694. them from the hand of their enemies. But after they

  695. had rest, they did evil again before you, and you

  696. abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that

  697. they had dominion over them.

  698. That when they.

  699. Turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven. And

  700. many times you delivered them according to your mercies, and.

  701. You warned them in order to turn them back to

  702. your law. Yet they acted presumptuously and did not obey

  703. your commandments, but sinned against your rules, which if a person.

  704. Does them, he shall live by them.

  705. And they turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffen their neck.

  706. And would not obey.

  707. Many years you bore with them and war warned them

  708. by your spirit through your prophets, yet they would not

  709. give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of

  710. the peoples of the lands. Nevertheless, in your great mercies

  711. you did not make an end of them or forsake them,

  712. for you are a gracious and merciful God.

  713. Now, therefore, our God, the Great, the Mighty, and the

  714. awesome God, who keeps covenant in steadfast love, let not

  715. all the hardship seem little to you that has come

  716. upon us, upon our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets,

  717. our fathers, and all your people since the time of

  718. the Kings of Assyria untill this day. Yet you have

  719. been righteous in all that has come upon us, for

  720. you have dealt faithfully.

  721. And we have acted wickedly.

  722. Our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have

  723. not kept your law or paid attention to your commandments

  724. and your warnings that you gave them, even in their

  725. own kingdom, and amid your great goodness that you gave them,

  726. and in the large and rich land that you set

  727. before them, they did not serve.

  728. You our turn from their wicked works.

  729. Behold, we are slaves this day in the land that

  730. you gave to our fathers to enjoy its fruit and

  731. its good gifts. Behold, we are slaves, and its rich

  732. yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us.

  733. Because of our sins, they rule over our bodies and

  734. over our livestock as they please, and we are in great.

  735. Distress because of all this.

  736. We make a firm covenant. In writing on the sealed

  737. document are the names of our princes, are Levites, sand Al.

  738. Priests, Nehemiah Tanyan. On the seals are the names of

  752. the lands to the law of God, their wives, their sons,

  753. their daughters, all who have knowledge and understanding, join with

  754. their brothers their nobles, and enter into a curse and

  755. an oath to walk in God's law that was given

  756. by Moses, the servant of God, and to observe and

  757. do all the commandments of the Lord, our Lord, and

  758. his rules and his statutes.

  759. We will not give our daughters to the peoples of

  760. the land, or take their daughters for our sons. And

  761. if the peoples of the land bring in goods or

  762. any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, we will

  763. not buy from them on the sabbath or on a

  764. holy day. And we will forego the crops of the

  765. seventh year and the exaction of every debt. We also

  766. take on ourselves the obligation to give yearly a third

  767. part of a shekel for the service of the House

  768. of our God, for the showbread, the regular grain offering,

  769. the regular burnt offering, the Sabbaths, the new moons, the

  770. appointed feasts, the holy things, and the sin offerings, to

  771. make atonement for Israel, and for all the work of

  772. the House of our God.

  773. We the priests, the Levites, and the people have likewise

  774. cast lots for the wood offering, to bring it into

  775. the House of our God, according to our fathers houses

  776. at times appointed year by year, to burn on the

  777. altar of the Lord our God, as it is written

  778. in the Law. We obligate ourselves to bring the first

  779. fruits of our ground, and the first fruits of all

  780. fruit of every tree, year by year, to the House

  781. of the Lord. Also to bring to the House of

  782. our God, to the priests who minister in the House

  783. of our God, the first born of our sons and

  784. of our catlet, as it is written in the Law,

  785. and the first born of our herds and of our flocks.

  786. And to bring the first of our dough and our contributions,

  787. the fruit of every tree, the wine and the oil

  788. to the priests to the chambers of the House of

  789. our God. And to bring to the Levites the tithes

  790. from our ground, for it is the Levites who collect

  791. the tithes in all our towns where we labor. And

  792. the priest, the son of Erin, shall be with the

  793. Levites when the Levites receive the tithes, and the Levites

  794. shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the

  795. House of our God, to the chambers of the storehouse,

  796. for the people of Israel, and the sons of Levi

  797. shall bring the contribution of grain, wine and oil to

  798. the chambers where the vessels of the sanctuary are, as

  799. well as the priests who minister, and the gatekeepers and

  800. the singers. We will not neglect the House of our God.

  801. Nehemiah eleven.

  802. Now the leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem, and

  803. the rest of the people cast lots to bring one

  804. out of ten to live in Jerusalem, the Holy City,

  805. while nine out of ten remained in the other towns.

  806. And the people blessed all the men who willingly offered

  807. to live in Jerusalem.

  808. These are the chiefs of.

  809. The province who lived in Jerusalem. But in the towns

  810. of Judah, everyone lived on his property in their towns Israel.

  811. The priests the Levites, the temple servants, and the descendants

  812. of Solomon's servants. And in Jerusalem lived certain of the

  813. sons of Judah and of the sons of Benjamin. Of

  814. the sons of Judah, Atheiah the son of Aziah, son

  818. of Joyiib son of Zechariah, son of the Shylnite. All

  819. the sons of Pires who lived in Jerusalem were four

  820. hundred sixty eight valiant men, and these are the sons

  821. of Benjamin, Salu the son of Meshulam, son of Joed,

  822. son of Pedea, son of Coleah, son of Mayasiah, son

  823. of Ithael, son of Joshiah, and his brothers men of

  824. Valor nine hundred twenty eight. Joel the son of Ziicrai

  825. was their overseer, and Judah the son of Hassanua was second.

  826. Over the city of the priests.

  845. the praise, who gave thanks and Backbakaiah the second among

  846. his brothers, and Abdah, the son of Shemuah, son of Galel,

  847. the son of Jaduthan. All the Levites in the Holy

  848. City were two hundred and eighty four. The gatekeepers akab

  849. Talman and their brothers who kept watch at the gates

  850. were one hundred seventy two. And the rest of Israel

  851. and of the priests and the Levites were in all

  852. the towns of Judah. Everyone in his inheritance, but the

  853. temple servants lived on Ophil and Zaia and Gishbah were

  854. over the temple servants. The overseer of the Levites in

  855. Jerusalem was Azai, the son of Benai, son of Hashibaiah,

  856. son of Mattanaiah, son of Micah, of the sons of Asaf.

  857. The singers over the work of the House of God,

  858. for there was a command from the King concerning them,

  859. and a fixed provision for the singers.

  860. As every day required.

  861. And Pethahiah, the son of Maschezebel of the sons of Zira,

  862. the son of Judah, was at the King's side in

  863. all matters concerning the people, and as for the villages.

  864. With their fields.

  865. Some of the people of Judah lived in Cariath Arba

  866. and its villages, and in Daimon and its villages, and

  867. in Jakabziel and its villages, and in Jeshua, and in

  868. Moladha and beth Pilit, in Hazar Shul, in Beirsheba and

  869. its villages, in Ziklag, in Makona and its villages, in Rimen,

  870. in Zora, in Jarmuth, Zanoah Adullam and their villages, Lakish

  871. and its fields, and Azeka and its villages. So they

  872. encamped from Beirsheba to the valley of Hinem. The people

  873. of Benjamin also lived from Giba onward at micmash Ajah,

  874. Bethel and its villages, anathof nob and Aniah, Hazor Rama, Gideim,

  875. haydd Ziboem Novallot Lad and Onno. The Valley of Craftsmen,

  876. and certain divisions of the Levites in Judah were assigned

  877. to Benjamin. Nehemiah twelve. These are the priests and the

  878. Levites who came up with Zerubbabel, the son of Si

  879. l t L and Jeshua, Saah, Jeremiah, Ezra, Amariah, Malik, Hattish, Shekeniah,

  880. Rheem merrimoth Ido, Ginnethoi, Abaijah, Jimen, Mehadiah, Bilga, Shimeya, joyaib Jedea, Salu,

  881. amac Hilkiah, Judea. These were the chiefs of the priests

  882. and of their brothers in the days of Jeshua and

  883. the Levites, Jeshua, Binui, Cadmeel Sherebiah, Judah and Mattanaiah, who

  884. with his brothers was in charge of the songs of

  885. thanksgiving and Backbakiah and Unai and their brothers stood opposite

  886. them in the service. And Jeshua was the father of Joyakim,

  887. Joyakim the father of Eliashiv, Eliashib, the father of Joyida,

  888. Joyada the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan the father of Jagua.

  889. And in the days of Joyakim were priests heads of

  890. father's houses of Sorea, Marea of Jeremiah, Hananiah of Ezra,

  891. Mishulm of Amariah, je Johanan of Malachi, Jonathan of Sheebaniah,

  892. Joseph of Haram, aDNA of Maraath, Helki of ido Zechariah

  893. of Ginathan, Mashulm of abaijah Zikrai of Menyumen of Moediah,

  894. Piltai of Bilga, Shamuah of Sheemeia, Johonathan of joyaib Matthani

  895. of Jidea, Zai of Sali, Calai of Amak Eber of Hilkiah,

  896. Hashebiah of Jadea, Nathanial. In the days of Eliashib, Joyda,

  897. Johanan and Jaduah, the Levites were recorded as heads of

  898. father's houses, So too were the priests in the reign

  899. of Darias the Persian. As for the sons of Levi,

  900. their heads of father's houses were written in the book

  901. of the Chronicles until the days of Johanan the son

  902. of Eliashe and the chiefs of the Levites Hashebiah, Sherebiah

  903. and Jeshua the son of Cadneo, with their brothers who

  904. stood opposite them to praise and to give thanks, according

  905. to the commandment of David, the Man of God, watch

  906. by watch. Madaniah, Bacbakaiah, Obadiah, Mushulam, Talman and Akkab were gatekeepers,

  907. standing guard at the storehouses of the gates. These were

  908. in the days of Joyakim the son of Jeshua, son

  909. of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the Governor,

  910. and of Ezra the priest and scribe, And at the

  911. dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem. They sought the Levites

  912. in all their places to bring them to Jerusalem to

  913. celebrate the dedication with gladness, with thanksgivings, and with singing

  914. with harps and liars. And the sons of the singers

  915. gathered together from the districts surrounding Jerusalem, and from the

  916. villages of the Natapathites, also from Beth Gilgel, and from

  917. the region of Giba and Asthma Ben. For the singers

  918. had built for themselves villages around Jerusalem.

  919. And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and they

  920. purified the people and the gates and the war. Then

  921. I brought the leaders of Judah up onto the war

  922. and appointed two great choirs that gave thanks. One went

  923. to the south on the wall, to the Dungate, and

  924. after them went Hoshea and half of the leaders of

  925. Judah and Aziah, Ezra, Meshulam, Judah, Benjamin, Shamayah and Jeremiah,

  926. and certain of the priest's sons with trumpets. Zachariah the

  927. son of Jonathan, son of Shamah, son of Mattanaya, son

  928. of Mackaya, son of zachar the son of Asa and

  929. his relatives Shameya, Azarel, Mililai, Gililai, Mai, Nathana Judah and Hannainai,

  930. with the musical instruments of David the Man of God

  931. and Ezra the Scribe went before them at the fountain gate.

  932. They went up straight before them by the stairs of

  933. the city of David, at the ascent of the war,

  934. above the House of David, to the water gate on

  935. the east. The other choir of those who gave thanks

  936. went to the north, and I followed them with half

  937. of the people on the wall above the tower of

  938. the Ovens, to the broad wall, and above the gate

  939. of Ephraim, and by the gate of Yeshana, and by

  940. the fish gate and the tower of Hananel and the

  941. tower of the Hundred, to the Sheik Gate. And they

  942. came to a halt at the gate of the God.

  943. So both choirs of those who gave thanks stood in

  944. the House of God, and I in half of the

  945. officials with him, and the priests Eliah, Kim, Mayothia, Minyamin, Michaea, Elioini,

  946. Zechariah and Hannanaiah with trumpets, and Mayathia, Shameyah, elieza Uzai,

  947. Jehohenan mal kaija Ilum and Iza.

  948. And the singers sang with Jezrahiah as their leader, and

  949. they offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced, for God

  950. had made them rejoice with great joy. The women and

  951. children also rejoiced, and the joy of Jerusalem was heard

  952. far away.

  953. On that day.

  954. Men were appointed over the storerooms the contributions, the first

  955. fruits and the tides, to gather into them the portions

  956. required by the law for the priests and for the

  957. levites according to the fields of the towns.

  958. For Judah rejoiced over.

  959. The priests and the Levites who ministered, and they performed

  960. the service of their God and the service of purification,

  961. as did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the

  962. command of David and his son Solomon. For long ago,

  963. in the days of David and Asaf, there were directors

  964. of the singers, and there were songs of praise and thanksgiving.

  965. To God and all Israel.

  966. In the days of some Rubbabul and in the days

  967. of Nehemiah, gave the daily portions for the singers and

  968. the gatekeepers. And they set apart that which was for

  969. the Levites and the Levites set apart that which was

  970. for the sons of erin Niemiah thirteen. On that day

  971. they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing

  972. of the people, and in it was found written that

  973. no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God.

  974. For they did not meet the people of Israel with

  975. bread and water, but hired balem against them to curse them.

  976. Yet Our God turned the curse into a blessing. As

  977. soon as the people heard the law, they separated from

  978. Israel all those of foreign descent. Now before this Eliashib,

  979. the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the

  980. House of Our God and who was related to Tobiah,

  981. prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously

  982. put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels and the

  983. tithes of grain, wine and oil, which were given by

  984. commandment to the Levites, singers and gatekeepers, and the contributions

  985. for the priests.

  986. While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem,

  987. for in the thirty second year of Artixerxes, king of Babylon,

  988. I went to the king, and after some time I

  989. asked leave of the king and came to Jerusalem, and

  990. I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobaiah,

  991. preparing for him a chamber in.

  992. The courts of the House of God.

  993. And I was very angry, and I threw all the

  994. household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber. Then I

  995. gave orders, and they cleansed the chambers, and I brought

  996. back there the vassals of the House of God with

  997. the grain offering and the frankincense. I also found out

  998. that the portions of the Levites had not been given

  999. to them, so that the Levites and the singers who

1000. did the work had fled each.

  1001. To his field.

1002. So I confronted the officials and said, why is the

1003. House of God forsaken? And I gathered them together and

1004. set them in their stations.

1005. Then all Judah brought the.

1006. Tithe of the grain, wine and oil into the storehouses,

1007. and I pointed as treasurers over the storehouses, Shalamayah the priest,

1008. Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as

1009. their assistant Henan, the son of Zachor son of Mattanaya.

1010. For they were considered reliable and their duty was to

1011. distribute to their brothers. Remember me, oh, my God, concerning this,

1012. and do not wipe out my good deeds that I

1013. have done for the house of my God and for

1014. his service. In those days I saw in Judah people

1015. treading wine presses on the Sabbath and bringing in heaps

1016. of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine,

1017. great figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought

1018. into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them

1019. on the day when they sold food. Tyrians also who

1020. lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds

1021. of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the

  1022. people of Judah.

  1023. Into usal of itself.

1024. Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them.

1025. What is this evil thing that you are doing profaning

1026. the Sabbath day. Did not your fathers act in this way,

1027. and did not our God bring all this disaster on

1028. us and on this city. Now you are bringing more

1029. rough on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.

1030. As soon as it began to grow dark at the

1031. gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the

1032. doors should be shut and gave orders that they should

1033. not be opened until after the Sabbath, and I stationed

1034. some of my servants at the gates, that no load

1035. might be brought in on the Sabbath day. Then the

1036. merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside

1037. of Jerusalem once or twice. But I wanted them and

1038. said to them, why do you lodge outside the wall?

1039. If you do so again, I will lay hands on

  1040. you from.

  1041. That time on.

1042. They did not come on the Sabbath. Then I commanded

1043. the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and

1044. guard the gates to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember

1045. this also in my favor, Oh my gardens, spare me

1046. according to the greatness of your steadfast love. In those days,

1047. also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod,

1048. Ammon and Moab, and half of their children spoke the

1049. language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language

1050. of Judah, but only the language of each people. And

1051. I confronted them and cursed them, and beat some of

1052. them and pulled out their head. And I made them

1053. take oath in the name of God, saying you shall

1054. not give your daughters to their sons, or take their

1055. daughters for your sons or for yourselves. Did not Solomon,

1056. King of Israel sin on account of such women? Among

1057. the many nations, there was no king like him, and

1058. he was beloved by his God, and God made him

1059. king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him

1060. to sin. Shall we then listen to you and do

1061. all this great evil and act treacherously against our God

1062. by marrying foreign women. And one of the sons of Jehyadah,

1063. the son of Eliaship, the high Priest, was the son

1064. in law of Sanbalat, the horror Knight.

1065. Therefore I chased him from me.

1066. Remember them, oh my God, because they have desecrated the

1067. priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

1068. Thus I cleanse them from everything foreign. And I established

1069. the duties of the priest stanly vites, each in his work.

1070. And I provided for the wood offering at appointed times

1071. and for the first fruits. Remember me, oh my God,

  1072. for good
