  1. I'm going to read a story for you, to you, I

  2. guess. So I want you to put on your imagination

  3. glasses, all right, and your imagination ears.

  4. On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often

  5. occur, there was once a crude little life -saving

  6. station. The building was just a hut, and there

  7. was only one boat, but the few devoted members

  8. kept a constant watch over the sea. and with

  9. no thought for themselves, went out day and night,

  10. tirelessly searching for those who were lost.

  11. Some of those who were saved and various others

  12. in the surrounding area wanted to become associated

  13. with the station and gave of their time, their

  14. money, and effort to support its work. New boats

  15. were bought and new crews trained. The little

  16. life -saving station grew. Some of the members

  17. of the life -saving station were unhappy that

  18. the building was so crude and poorly equipped.

  19. They felt that a more comfortable place should

  20. be provided as the first refuge of those saved

  21. from the sea. They replaced the emergency cots

  22. with beds and put better furniture in the enlarged

  23. building. Now, the life -saving station became

  24. a popular gathering place for its members, and

  25. they decorated it beautifully because they used

  26. it as a sort of yacht club. were now interested

  27. in going to sea on life -saving missions, so

  28. they hired lifeboat crews to do this work. The

  29. life -saving motif still prevailed in the club's

  30. decorations, and there was a liturgical lifeboat

  31. in the room where the club's initiations were

  32. held. About this time, a large ship wrecked off

  33. the coast, and the hired crews brought in boatloads

  34. of cold, wet, and half -drowned people. They

  35. were dirty and sick. The beautiful new club was

  36. in chaos, so the property committee immediately

  37. had a shower house built outside the club where

  38. victims of shipwrecks could be cleaned up before

  39. coming inside. At the next meeting, there was

  40. a split among the club membership. Most of the

  41. members wanted to stop the club's life -saving

  42. activities as being unpleasant and a hindrance

  43. to the normal social life of the club. Some members

  44. insisted upon life -saving as their primary purpose

  45. and pointed out that they were still called a

  46. life -saving station. But they were finally voted

  47. down and told that if they wanted to save the

  48. lives of all the various kinds of people who

  49. were shipwrecked in those waters, they could

  50. begin their own lifesaving station. So they did.

  51. And as the years went by, the new station experienced

  52. the same changes that had occurred in the old.

  53. It evolved into a club, and yet another lifesaving

  54. station was founded. History continued to repeat

  55. itself. And if you visit that seacoast today,

  56. you will find a number of exclusive clubs along

  57. that shore. Shipwrecks are frequent in those

  58. waters, but most of the people drown. Now that

  59. story hits home, doesn't it? Maybe it sounds

  60. a little familiar, but you replace the word life

  61. -saving station with church. See, we've been

  62. talking about our calling over the last couple

  63. of weeks, Calling that we have is the mission

  64. of the church. It is our calling. It is our mission.

  65. And that is to go and save those drowning. Isn't

  66. it good news that Jesus didn't start a yacht

  67. club? He started a rescue. He started. A life

  68. -saving station. And the best part about it is

  69. when Jesus pulled us from the waves, when he

  70. pulled us out of the wreckage, he didn't just

  71. set us on the shore. He didn't just take us into

  72. a nice, cozy bed. What he did was he said, now

  73. join my mission. And today I want us to remember

  74. both the call that we have and the message that

  75. we are called to bring, that we are sent to proclaim.

  76. But to do that, we have to answer this question,

  77. and that is, what is the call? What are we called

  78. to do? In Mark 16, Jesus has just risen from

  79. the dead, and he's now fully completed his role,

  80. his purpose for his time on earth. And so he

  81. is telling the disciples, I'm getting ready to

  82. go. He appears to them. He actually rebukes them

  83. first because he catches them in this state of

  84. disbelief. And then he says this. He gives them

  85. what is known as the Great Commission. And before

  86. we discuss this Great Commission, we have to

  87. define the word commission. And it's a very simple

  88. definition. It's an instruction, a command or

  89. a duty given to a person or a group of people.

  90. And so Jesus has given the church this duty.

  91. And what is that duty? Well, it's found in Mark

    Mark 16:15

  92. chapter 16, verse 15. Go into all the world and

  93. proclaim the gospel. To the whole creation. The

  94. good news. Proclaim the good news message. To

  95. everybody you come across. Go find the people

  96. that are drowning. And save them. Toss them the

  97. lifeline. Proclaim. The gospel. This is the final

  98. commission. This final responsibility. That Jesus

  99. gives to his followers. Before he ascends into

  100. heaven. He's calling us to go. To do. He isn't

  101. calling us to wait around for people to come

  102. to us. He's not calling us to sit back and just

  103. wait. He is calling us to take action, to bring

  104. a message to the world. And it's not just any

  105. message. It is the gospel, the good news. He's

  106. not sending us out to cast judgment. He's not

  107. sending us out to even tell people how awful

  108. they are. What he's sending us to do is to tell

  109. people about how awesome he is. We're not recruiters

  110. for religion. We are partners in rescue. That

  111. is our call. So I want us to read on in Mark

    Mark 16 chapter mention

  112. chapter 16 to verse 16. And this is what Jesus

  113. says is the implication of our calling. Whoever

  114. believes and is baptized, they will be saved.

  115. But whoever doesn't believe will be condemned.

  116. This is a matter of life and death. The implication

  117. of our calling. If we bring this message to the

  118. world and they believe and they put on Christ

  119. in baptism and they commit their lives to him,

  120. they will be saved. But if they don't, if they

  121. don't accept this good news, if they don't accept

  122. this lifeline that we're throwing to them, they

  123. will perish. And that's our mission. See, when

  124. the church forgets its purpose. when we forget

  125. what we were called to do, when we get comfortable

  126. in this building, and when all we can think about

  127. is ourselves and our community and our family,

  128. when that's all we think about, people out there

  129. drown. They die. Not receiving this awesome free

  130. gift of salvation. And so we have to remember

  131. our purpose because we cannot call ourselves

  132. disciples. Or followers of Christ if we're not

  133. going to do our part in this redemptive mission

  134. of Christ. If we're not going to join in on the

  135. rescue efforts, we are not followers. We're not

  136. disciples because our Jesus goes and he seeks

  137. and he saves the lost. And if we're calling ourselves

  138. followers and we follow him into battle, we follow

  139. him into rescue. It's not optional. And the truth

  140. is, the church is not growing like it did in

  141. the first century, is it? You remember in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  142. chapter 2 how many people were saved and added?

  143. 3 ,000 on that first day. And then day by day,

  144. it actually says there were many added to their

  145. number. So it wasn't just like each day, one

  146. person. But imagine even if each day one person

  147. was added to our number. That would be 365 people

  148. coming to know Jesus in one year. Could you imagine?

  149. lot of churches in this community that haven't

  150. seen 365 people baptized into Christ in 10 years.

  151. Maybe some can even say in 30 years. So could

  152. you imagine if day by day people were being added

  153. to our number? That is our mission. And our mission

  154. is to bring a message. And so this morning we're

  155. going to have a little bit of a good old gospel

  156. sermon. We're going to define that message that

  157. we're supposed to bring to the world because

  158. sometimes we forget and we make it more than

  159. it should be. And sometimes we make it a little

  160. bit less than it should be, right? So today we're

  161. going to make it exactly what it is. And this

  162. is the gospel. It looks something like this.

  163. It looks something like this, this little diagram

  164. here. If you've ever watched that dynasty, maybe

  165. you've seen it. Or if you follow the Robertson

  166. family, they love this diagram. And I do too.

  167. I can remember when I was in high school, I went

  168. to a youth rally in Monroe, Louisiana. It was

  169. hosted at the Ouachita Christian School, which

  170. is where all of the Robertson family went to

  171. school. And they actually spoke at this youth

  172. rally. The Duck Odyssey family spoke at it. And

  173. this diagram was put on the screen, and it made

  174. the gospel so simple. It made it make sense.

  175. It's pretty easy, right? Jesus came down. He

  176. went on a cross. He rose from the grave. He ascended

  177. to heaven and he's coming back. And that's easy

  178. and that's good. And I want you to commit that

  179. to memory. But before we get into this, we have

  180. to start at the beginning because for some people,

  181. they don't really know why he had to come down

  182. and do that. And so we start in Genesis chapter

  183. two, verses eight through nine, and then we'll

  184. read 15 through 18. And this is what it says.

  185. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden and

  186. there he put the man whom he had formed. And

  187. out of the ground the Lord God made to spring

  188. up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and

  189. good for food. The tree of life was in the midst

  190. of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of

  191. good and evil. And the Lord God took the man

  192. and he put him in the garden of Eden to work

  193. it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded

  194. the man saying, you may surely eat of every tree

  195. of the garden. But of the tree of the knowledge

  196. of good and evil, you shall not eat for in the

  197. day that you eat of it, you shall surely die.

  198. Then the Lord God said, and it's not good for

  199. the, that the man should be alone. I will make

  200. him a helper fit for him. So that passage is

  201. really important to the gospel message because

  202. what it tells us is that from the beginning,

  203. God wanted to create a perfect home for humanity.

  204. And that picture right there is how we need to

  205. see God as somebody who creates good things for

  206. his people. He didn't just create us and put

  207. us on this wasteland. God created this perfect

  208. home where everything in it was pleasant and

  209. it was good. And man had purpose and we had place

  210. and we had belonging. God created a perfect home.

  211. For his people, a perfect home, not only where

  212. they could have a full life in, but where he

  213. could have part in that life with them, with

  214. us. And so he creates this home with everything

  215. that you could possibly need. God gave provisions.

  216. He gave purpose. He gave his presence. He gave

  217. us everything we needed. There was just one rule.

  218. One prohibition. And this prohibition wasn't

  219. meant to restrict us. It was actually meant to

  220. protect us. Because again, God cares for his

  221. people. But what we see in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  222. is Adam and Eve are deceived by Satan. He tricks

  223. them. And for the rest of eternity, well, no,

  224. for the rest of humanity's time on this earth,

  225. he continues to trick us, does he not? And that

  226. deceit leads to death. Satan ruins. Our life

  227. with God. He ruins our perfect place in this

  228. perfect home. This abundant life that we had

  229. from the beginning that God desired for us to

  230. have with him. But lucky for us, God is not willing

  231. to leave us. He's not willing to give up on this

  232. project. He doesn't just want to leave us in

  233. this broken state and say, well, they'll fend

  234. for themselves. And when they finally run themselves

  235. extinct, that's it. He doesn't leave us in a

  236. separated state where we're no longer with him.

  237. What God does is he shows how much he wants to

  238. be with us. That's why he created us. That's

  239. why he created this perfect home was so he could

  240. be with us. And so God promises to redeem us.

  241. He promises to restore us. Here's what we read

  242. in Jeremiah chapter 3 or chapter 31 verses 31

    Jeremiah 3 chapter mention

  243. to 34. Behold, the days are coming, declares

  244. the Lord. When I will make a new covenant with

  245. the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not

  246. like the covenant that I made with their fathers

  247. on the day when I took them by the hand to bring

  248. them out of the land of Egypt. My covenant that

  249. they broke, though I was their husband, declares

  250. the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will

  251. make with the house of Israel. After those days,

  252. declares the Lord, I will put my law within them.

  253. I will write it on their hearts and I will be

  254. their God and they shall be my people. And no

  255. longer shall each one teach his neighbor and

  256. each his brother, saying, Know the Lord, for

  257. they shall all know me from the least of them

  258. to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will

  259. forgive their iniquity. And I will remember their

  260. sin no more. Even in judgment, God gives hope.

  261. Even in the midst of our death. and in all of

  262. our darkness and all of our sinfulness, in the

  263. midst of every broken thing, God shines a light

  264. and says, I'm going to bring them home. I'm going

  265. to forgive you, and I'm not going to remember

  266. your sins anymore. You'll be my people, and I'll

  267. be your God. And this leads us to our full gospel

  268. message diagram. It's a little bit longer than

  269. the other one, maybe a little bit harder, but

  270. it's complete. Because what it shows is God's

  271. creation of this perfect home. This place that

  272. he desired to live and be with man. This place

  273. where we would have abundant life. Where we would

  274. know no sickness, no death, no pain, no heartache.

  275. But because of our pride, our greed, and because

  276. of Satan's deceit, we experience death. Not only

  277. physically, but spiritually. This separation

  278. from God. This inability to be in that perfect

  279. home. But God promises to restore. He promises

  280. to redeem. And that redemption looks like Jesus

  281. coming down to this earth and living a perfect

  282. life. That eventually puts him on a cross where

  283. he dies for our sins. But the promise continues

  284. because he rises from that grave. Promising our

  285. resurrection and our defeat over death in him.

  286. And he ascends to heaven to prepare a place for

  287. us. And he's coming home. And with him he will

  288. bring that perfect restored Eden. Where we will

  289. live for eternity in the presence of our God.

  290. Just look at what Jesus says in John chapter

    John 10:10

  291. 10, verse 10. The thief comes only to steal.

  292. I think he stole something from us, right? That

  293. perfect life that knows no pain, that knows no

  294. sickness, that knows no sorrow. He stole that

  295. from us. He killed everything that we knew as

  296. perfect, as good, as pleasant. And he has destroyed.

  297. The life that God intended for us. And he keeps

  298. doing that over and over and over again. But

  299. Jesus came that we would have life and life abundant.

  300. If you think you've got a good life here, just

  301. wait. The life in Christ is so much better. That's

  302. the promise. Jesus acknowledges what Satan has

  303. done, what he's doing. This destruction that

  304. he wreaks. havoc on our earth. He then declares

  305. that he is the one who's going to save us from

  306. that death. He's going to save us from that destruction

  307. and he's going to restore life to us and salvation

  308. has come. Jesus doesn't say I am coming. He says

  309. I came that they would have life and have it

  310. abundantly. Jesus came to conquer death. And

  311. while Jesus is no longer here on this earth physically

  312. He gives us this reassurance that he is coming

  313. back. In John chapter 14, verses 1 through 4,

    John 14:1–4

  314. he says, Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe

  315. in God. Believe also in me. In my Father's house

  316. are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have

  317. told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

  318. And this is the key here. And if I go and prepare

  319. a place for you, I will come again and will take

  320. you to myself. That where I am, you may be also.

  321. And you know the way to where I'm going. Jesus

  322. is going to return. And he's going to bring that

  323. final restored life. The life that God designed

  324. for us. That he designed us for. This was not

  325. meant to be our reality. But because of our sin,

  326. it is for now. But again, even in our judgment,

  327. God promises hope. No more death. We know some

  328. people that have gone on before us, haven't they?

  329. We've lost some people. People we love. They're

  330. no longer here with us. Jesus says that will

  331. be no more. No more pain. Some of you are struggling

  332. with sickness and pain. No more. No more sorrow.

  333. No more crying over people we've lost or crying

  334. over heartache. No more being sad because of

  335. the state of the world or the things that you

  336. see, the evil that is in this world. That's going

  337. to be gone. He promises that because that was

  338. not meant to be our reality. And Jesus will come

  339. and restore the reality that God intended for

  340. us. Think about this. Jesus is not saving us.

  341. He's not just saving us from our sin. He is saving

  342. us for home. He says, I go to prepare a place

  343. for you. That's grace. That's not just forgiveness

  344. of the past, but it is a guaranteed future. You

  345. know, we talk all the time about savings and

  346. 401ks and retirement plans, and that's cool.

  347. Bill said something funny to me today. What did

  348. you say? He said, I always say that I'm going

  349. to be the richest man in the cemetery. We save

  350. and we work so that we can save and prepare for

  351. a future. And that's nice. We want to have these

  352. good retirement plans. We want to make sure that

  353. our futures are secure here. But for some reason,

  354. so many of us forget to make sure our future

  355. is secure there. And Jesus says, if you will

  356. just trust in me, if you will commit your life

  357. to me, your future is guaranteed there, then,

  358. forever. This is what we read about his return

  359. in Revelation 21, the scary book of Revelation.

  360. It's actually really hope -filled. Then I saw

  361. a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven

  362. and the first earth had passed away and the sea

  363. was no more. There's that hope that all this

  364. garbage that we're experiencing here, gone. Something

  365. new and better is coming. And I saw the holy

  366. city, the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven

  367. from God prepared as a bride adorned for her

  368. husband. I want to stop there for a second. Men,

  369. you remember when you got married. If you haven't,

  370. this day may come for you where you're standing

  371. up here and you look down and that music starts.

  372. And down the aisle comes this beautiful, magnificent

  373. woman that God has given you. I don't cry. Well,

  374. I cry a lot now because I'm a teddy bear. But

  375. I can remember standing on a stage in a church

  376. building and Eliza comes down the aisle. It was

  377. waterworks. I just couldn't help it because my

  378. bride was coming for me. Imagine when Jesus comes

  379. back and descending is this place adorned for

  380. us. That's this beautiful, hope -filled image

  381. that John gives us in Revelation. And I heard

  382. a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold,

  383. the dwelling place of God is with man. He will

  384. dwell with them and they will be his people.

  385. And God himself will be with them as their God.

  386. If we commit our lives to Christ, at the end

  387. of all of this, a beautiful gift comes. It's

  388. a home. A home so amazing that we can't even

  389. imagine it. So amazing that men have spent the

  390. last thousand or whatever years trying to figure

  391. out what it's going to look like and painting

  392. these beautiful pictures that don't even come

  393. close. That's the home that's coming and God

  394. is going to be there and on his throne will be

  395. in the presence of his glory. And he'll dwell

  396. with us. And he'll be our God and we'll be his

  397. people. He'll wipe away every tear. Think of

  398. all those tears you've cried over relationships,

  399. over loved ones lost, over tragedies that you've

  400. witnessed, or tragedies that you hear about in

  401. the news and on social media, and all of these

  402. things that just bring you sorrow gone. He'll

  403. wipe away every tear. And that's a real personal

  404. thing, isn't it? Maybe you've been there where...

  405. You fell off your bike and you scraped your knee

  406. and you remember your mom or your dad wiping

  407. those tears off your eye and telling you, don't

  408. cry. It's okay. God will do that for each one

  409. of us. Think about that. All those tears you've

  410. cried on this earth, he personally is going to

  411. wipe those away. And death will be no more. Neither

  412. shall there be mourning. No crying. No pain anymore.

  413. For the former things. These cruddy things have

  414. passed away. He's coming back. And he's going

  415. to bring with him this perfect home that we were

  416. supposed to live in from the beginning. And that

  417. is the gospel message. That is the lifeline that

  418. we bring out to the shipwreck. And we toss it

  419. out to him and say, just grab hold of it. And

  420. you too can be saved. God created us, provided

  421. a perfect home for us. We messed it up. He promised

  422. and offered restoration and he is coming back

  423. to finish the job. And here's the crazy thing,

  424. people. It is free. Completely free. There's

  425. no payment. The only thing is just accept it.

  426. Commit to it. Give your life to Christ. Bury

  427. yourself in the watery graves of baptism. Come

  428. out and you have that new life, that gift, that

  429. promise of restored life. The gift of the Holy

  430. Spirit that helps you get there for eternity.

  431. It's free. This is a simple but extraordinary

  432. message that we're called to bring to the world.

  433. And if we understand that message, we have two

  434. responses. Accept it. Accept the gospel message

  435. and live in its truth. And the second is share

  436. that truth with the world. That's it. That's

  437. it. That's the only things we have to do. It's

  438. not that complicated, is it? We were called to

  439. accept this message and share it. That's it.

  440. Accept it, live it, and share it. In Mark 16,

  441. 15, Jesus makes it simple. Go into all the world

  442. and proclaim. Notice he doesn't say preach. Proclaim

  443. in the way you act, in the things you do, in

  444. the things you say, in the way you interact with

  445. people. Proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.

  446. This is good news. This is good news. Verse 16,

  447. he tells us how crucial that message is. It is

  448. life. That is our mission. We've been called

  449. together for this purpose. For this singular

  450. purpose. God is sending us out to share life

  451. with the lost. To share hope with the hopeless.

  452. If all we do as a church is come occupy a pew

  453. or a chair. Is come occupy a seat on a Sunday

  454. morning. And serve ourselves in fellowship. And

  455. we get together for Bible classes. If that's

  456. all we do, we've missed the point. And we'll

  457. become like that life -saving station at the

  458. beginning of this sermon. That just stopped saving.

  459. That stopped seeking. They worried about themselves

  460. so much that the people out there on the waters

  461. died. I don't know about you, but I want to be

  462. a part of a saving. I want to be a part of rescuing

  463. the lost. I want to be a part of throwing the

  464. lifeline out to the drowning. I listened to a

  465. podcast the other day. The president of Harding

  466. University, Mike Williams, he was talking about

  467. how this generation is starting more nonprofits

  468. than any other generation before. And he said

  469. all these students that he talks with at a Christian

  470. university. The number one thing they say they

  471. want to do when they graduate is start a non

  472. -profit. You notice they don't say they want

  473. to be preachers. They want to be youth ministers.

  474. They want to be deacons or elders in the church.

  475. They say, I want to start a non -profit. Do you

  476. know why? Because what they see from the church

  477. is a bunch of people worried about themselves

  478. not serving and saving the lost. And so they

  479. said, if the church isn't going to do it, we'll

  480. do it out there. I don't want that to be our

  481. reality. I want people to know that when they

  482. come here, when they are a part of the church

  483. of Christ, that we're going to do what Christ

  484. did and save people and serve people and feed

  485. people and clothe people and house people. Because

  486. that's the mission. And if we'll do that, we

  487. can throw out that lifeline and say, come to

  488. Jesus. I want to be a part of that. And I hope

  489. you do too. Because this message is way too good

  490. to not share. It is way too good to not share.

  491. Especially because it's free. If I told you,

  492. hey, I got out of the Chevy dealership. And my

  493. four people, close your ears. You got out of

  494. the Chevy dealership, they're giving away brand

  495. new Silverados for free. All you got to do is

  496. show up. How many of you are going to show up?

  497. I am. I want a new truck. And if you tell me

  498. it's free, I'm going. This is way better than

  499. that. This is life. Abundant life and the promise

  500. of a great home in heaven with God, the creator

  501. of the universe for eternity. And it's free.

  502. Why are we not telling people? Why are we not

  503. living like that is the truth? Like that is the

  504. case that the world needs to know about. Let

  505. everything we do, everything we say be seasoned

  506. with that truth that Jesus is coming back. And

  507. everybody's invited. And it's no cost to them.

  508. I want to close by saying this. The danger that

  509. we have is forgetting why we exist. And that's

  510. the danger for everyone individually, just in

  511. life. Forgetting your purpose. For the church

  512. especially, the danger, the leading cause of

  513. death in churches all over the country is forgetting

  514. why we exist. But here's the grace. I don't want

  515. to just bash the church all day. Jesus has not

  516. given up on his rescue. He's still doing it.

  517. Jesus is still saving souls. Do you all believe

  518. that? He's still saving lives. He's not done.

  519. And he's not giving up on us. He is still calling

  520. us to be a part of the rescue mission. You know,

  521. in the story of the life -saving station, it

  522. said they still have a boat. They still have

  523. a boat there to remember the life that they used

  524. to live as people that went out on the waters

  525. to save. Well, guess what? That boat still floats.

  526. And they can still go save people. We can too.

  527. It's time. For restoration in our church. To

  528. go out and save people. So let's take the cross

  529. off the wall and go to the world with it. Let's

  530. take it off our necklaces and go to the world

  531. with it. It's not too late. If you've heard the

  532. gospel message this morning, you've heard it.

  533. And you want to accept it. Give your life to

  534. Christ. Commit to living with him. Be baptized

  535. for the remission of your sins and the gift of

  536. the Holy Spirit. If you want that, today's the

  537. day. And if you want to recommit to going out

  538. and telling people about that free gift, today

  539. is the day. If you need prayers for courage to

  540. continue on in this fight, this rescue mission,

  541. today is the day. Whatever you need, whatever

  542. you need, we invite you to come as we stand.
