  1. We've been in a series for a few weeks now titled

  2. Freedom is Here where we've been exploring the

  3. book, well really the letter that the Apostle

  4. Paul wrote to the church in Galatia. This new

  5. group of Christians that are struggling with

  6. some things and what he writes in this letter

  7. is essentially freedom is not something you earn,

  8. it's not something you deserve, but it is something

  9. that is freely given through Christ. That's the

  10. only way you get it. It's through Christ. It's

  11. freedom to love. It's a freedom to serve, a freedom

  12. to care for others, a freedom to walk by the

  13. Spirit and in step with the Spirit instead of

  14. being driven by the flesh. And in today's passage,

  15. Paul shows us that what that kind of Spirit -led,

  16. other -centered life actually looks like. And

  17. so our passage this morning is Galatians 6, verses

    Galatians 6:1–10

  18. 1 -10. Six chapters in Paul's letter to the Galatians.

  19. So we are almost done. Just a few more days and

  20. then we'll be finished with this series on Galatians.

  21. When Christ sets you free, you don't walk alone.

  22. You walk together. I want you to imagine for

  23. a moment that you and a group of friends find

  24. a treasure chest. You're walking around and you

  25. stumble upon a lump in the ground and you dig

  26. a little bit and you see this treasure chest

  27. in it. You finally get it out from the hole and

  28. it's full. It's really heavy. And you can only

  29. assume that there's some really nice things in

  30. this treasure chest. There's some prized possessions

  31. and maybe some gold and some crowns and jewels

  32. and things that if you were to get access to

  33. them would change your life and the rest of the

  34. people in your group's life forever. And so you

  35. grab this chest and you pull it out of the hole

  36. and you realize that it's locked. And you can't

  37. get it unlocked. So you and your friends, you

  38. do some research and you find some details about

  39. this very treasure chest. And what you find is

  40. that there's only one person in the world that

  41. can unlock this treasure chest. And so you look

  42. up and you find where that person is. Well, they're

  43. a couple of countries away. They're on an entirely

  44. different continent. So you and your friends,

  45. you figure out or you decide that you're going

  46. to. take the treasure chest to this locksmith

  47. so that he can unlock it and get access to this

  48. treasure. So you guys, you each grab a handle

  49. and you start walking down the road and you're

  50. carrying it and somebody gets a cramp. And so

  51. everybody has to kind of shift their weight and

  52. maybe grab an extra handle because that person

  53. with the cramp can't carry their portion of the

  54. weight. And so you keep walking and eventually

  55. that person recovers enough and they pick up

  56. their slack and now you're walking some more

  57. and you're walking and then somebody's shoulder

  58. starts to hurt. And so now everybody has to divert

  59. their attention and their energy to sharing the

  60. load for that person. And you keep walking and

  61. now somebody is dehydrated so they need to take

  62. a break. So everybody picks up their slack and

  63. this just continues and continues and continues

  64. until eventually you get to... The locksmith.

  65. See, the rest of the group doesn't just leave

  66. somebody behind and set the treasure down. They

  67. keep carrying. They shift the weight a little

  68. bit and they grab an extra piece of handle and

  69. they do what they need to do so that we can all

  70. keep walking to carry the treasure because in

  71. this treasure chest is life -changing material.

  72. It's the type of stuff that will set up your

  73. family for generations. And so you keep bearing

  74. the load. That's the picture Paul is painting

  75. here in Galatians 6. What Paul is calling us

  76. to is this life of a long walk toward the eternal

  77. treasure that Christ has promised us. But along

  78. the way, as we walk this journey of life together,

  79. we're going to have some difficulties. We're

  80. going to have some things pop up that make it

  81. hard for us to carry our portion of the weight.

  82. And the truth that we have to hold on to today

  83. is that we carry each other's burdens because

  84. we're walking together with a purpose for a prize

  85. that we all want to share in. And that's how

  86. we get to Galatians 6, verses 1 -10. We're going

    Galatians 6:1–10

  87. to read through the passage, and then we'll continue

  88. in this lesson. Starting in verse 1, Paul writes,

  89. Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression,

  90. you who are spiritual should restore him in a

  91. spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself

  92. lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens

  93. and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone

  94. thinks he is something when he is nothing, he

  95. deceives himself. But let each one test his own

  96. work, and then his reason to boast will be in

  97. himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each

  98. will have to bear his own load. Let the one who

  99. is taught the word share all good things with

  100. the one who teaches. Do not be deceived. God

  101. is not mocked. For whatever one sows, that will

  102. he also reap. For the one who sows to his own

  103. flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But

  104. the one who sows to the Spirit will from the

  105. Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow

  106. weary of doing good. For in due season we will

  107. reap if we do not give up. So then, as we have

  108. opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and

  109. especially to those who are of the household

  110. of faith. So there in verse 1, the word caught

  111. doesn't mean like I caught you red -handed or

  112. caught with your hand in the cookie jar. The

  113. word caught there is it's trapped. It's an entanglement.

  114. It's like somebody getting stuck in a net. And

  115. so when you see somebody in sin, the fleshly

  116. response is to say, you got to cut them off.

  117. They're doing the wrong thing. We got to get

  118. rid of them or we got to call them out and we

  119. got to make an example of them or we've got to

  120. cancel them because they're doing things that

  121. we disagree with or they're saying things that

  122. we don't like. And so we catch somebody in sin,

  123. in a transgression, and the human response is,

  124. get rid of them. If they did wrong, if they wronged

  125. me, Get rid of them. But the Spirit says. What

  126. Paul says is, you who are spiritual. The Spirit

  127. says, restore them. And Paul tells us how to

  128. restore them. He says, do it with gentleness.

  129. A spirit of gentleness. See, we live in an age

  130. where everything is about putting people on blast.

  131. If they did wrong or they messed up or they said

  132. something bad, they said something we disagreed

  133. with, we put it all over Facebook and we make

  134. an example of them. We make a mockery of them.

  135. We joke about them and we make memes about them.

  136. But what Paul says is if you catch them doing

  137. wrong, don't make a joke of them and don't cut

  138. them off, don't throw them out, but restore them

  139. with the spirit of gentleness. That's one of

  140. the fruits of the spirit that we talked about

  141. last week. opposite of what the human response

  142. is. Warren Wiersbe says in his book, Be Free,

  143. nothing reveals the wickedness of legalism better

  144. than the way the legalists treat those who have

  145. sinned. And we can replace the word legalism

  146. with nothing reveals the wickedness of being

  147. human better than the way the humans treat those

  148. who have sinned. Because we know exactly what

  149. that looks like, right? We've seen it. We've

  150. seen it over the last 10 years. Well, I say the

  151. last 10 years because that's how long I've been

  152. an adult. Over the last 10 years, I've seen some

  153. really ugly treatment of people who look and

  154. think and act differently than we do. People

  155. that maybe are in the wrong, maybe have been

  156. in sin, and we've treated them awfully. And I'm

  157. saying we just as in a general sense as this

  158. is how humans have been behaving. But what Paul

  159. is calling us to, what Jesus has always called

  160. his followers to, is not to act like humans.

  161. It's to act like God. And we reveal our wickedness

  162. in the way we treat those who sin differently

  163. than us. And that hits hard, doesn't it? Because

  164. the world loves to bash failures. But Jesus came

  165. to heal sinners. fix something and you used a

  166. little too much force. I'm really bad about this.

  167. If I've got to screw something on, I'm going

  168. to screw it on as tight as possible. Or if I've

  169. got to hammer something in, I'm going to just

  170. smash it as hard as I can because I want to make

  171. sure it's good. It's tight, right? But when you

  172. try to fix something and you use a little bit

  173. too much force, if it's a screw, you may snap

  174. the screw or you may strip it. You break it.

  175. And what Paul warns against here in Galatians

  176. 6 is don't try to fix something harshly. Don't

  177. try to fix something with as much force as you

  178. can, because if you do that, you're going to

  179. break it. Maybe you have kids and your kids are

  180. adults now. And you know that some of the moments

  181. in your life and raising them, you were a little

  182. too harsh. The other night, Easton, I was putting

  183. Easton to bed and I can't remember what I said

  184. to him. But he said, Daddy. why do you and mommy

  185. always yell at us? The first response was, I

  186. don't yell at you at all. They don't want to

  187. yell at them for saying that. But I just had

  188. to stop and think. And my response was, well,

  189. buddy, because you're never listening. And I

  190. got to make sure you hear me. But there's a truth

  191. there, right? That we yell at people and we hit

  192. people and we bash them over the head with scripture

  193. sometimes. And what it does is it pushes them

  194. away and it breaks them. Now, everybody has a

  195. podcast these days. And the number one thing

  196. that comes up on my feed of podcasts is people

  197. that grew up in church that no longer want to

  198. be a part of church because of the way the church

  199. raised them. And what they're saying is, is I

  200. wasn't raised with gentleness. I wasn't corrected

  201. with gentleness. I was beat over the head with

  202. scripture. And beat over the head with tradition.

  203. And I don't want to be a Christian that does

  204. that. I don't want to do that to my kids. I don't

  205. want to do that to your kids. I don't want to

  206. do that to you. When I see somebody caught in

  207. sin. When I see somebody trapped. I want to restore

  208. them with gentleness. And I hope that is the

  209. case for all of us. Because that's what the gospel.

  210. That is what the Apostle Paul is calling us to.

  211. And so we look at. These people that are damaged.

  212. We look at these people that are hurt, that have

  213. slipped into sin. And what I want you to hear

  214. this morning is when someone is damaged, gentleness

  215. restores so much better than harshness because

  216. harshness shatters. It breaks people. It pushes

  217. them away. And now you hear so many people that

  218. are 25, 30, 35, or even adults that say, I will

  219. never set foot in a church again. Or I will never

  220. speak to my parents again. Or I'll never associate

  221. with those people again because of the way they

  222. treated me when I was in the wrong. And they'll

  223. admit that maybe they were in the wrong. They'll

  224. admit that maybe they thought a little bit different

  225. than they should have. But they weren't restored

  226. gently. And they were broken because of it. And

  227. so then we get to the second half of verse 1

  228. where Paul says, Keep watch on yourself lest

  229. you be tempted to sin. You see, because we do

  230. get tempted to restore people harshly. And that

  231. can lead us into sin. But there's also some more

  232. there. See, when you reach down to lift somebody

  233. else up, Paul is saying watch your footing so

  234. that you don't fall off the cliff too. Be careful

  235. because that same sin that trapped them or that

  236. tripped them could also trip you. And so if you

  237. reach down and you figure, okay, I'm going to

  238. save the alcoholic by going to the bar and sitting

  239. down with the alcoholic, and then you find yourself

  240. becoming an alcoholic. Be careful. Know yourself.

  241. Know your limits. Watch your footing so that

  242. if you go to try to save the person caught in

  243. sin, you don't find yourself there too. But there's

  244. also another way that this could be. The person

  245. that you reach down to save, that you restore,

  246. the person that you're trying to help fix and

  247. that you're trying to get out of sin, that person

  248. could very well be the person that 10 years from

  249. now saves you. that reaches down and pulls you

  250. up. You never know what's going to happen from

  251. you trying to restore someone. So be careful.

  252. Don't allow them to pull you down, but also make

  253. sure you do it in a way that one day when you're

  254. in sin, they think back on the way you restored

  255. them and they say, I got to help them. I have

  256. to because that's how they treated me when I

  257. was lost. And I believe that's why Paul goes

  258. on in the passage by saying, well, what he says

  259. in verses 2 and 3, and this is the heart of the

  260. passage, and so I want us to really hone in on

  261. this. So read it, let it marinate for a little

  262. bit. Verse 2, bear one another's burdens and

  263. so fulfill the law of Christ. That's the heartbeat

  264. of Christian community. That's what this is about.

  265. This is not about us singing songs together.

  266. It's not about you listening to me. It's not

  267. about you going to a Bible class. That's great.

  268. That stuff is important. You need that. But what

  269. Paul says is to fulfill the law of Christ, you

  270. help each other. You bear each other's burdens.

  271. The law of Christ is very simple. You look at

  272. a passage like John 13, verse 34, where Christ

    John 13:34

  273. says, love one another as I have loved you. That

  274. is what we have been called to do. It's to lift

  275. each other up when we're falling. It's to carry

  276. each other when we can't keep going. It's to

  277. make sure that we are all getting to the destination

  278. where the treasure will be revealed. The old

  279. law was complex. Have you ever read Leviticus?

  280. You ever read the Old Testament? I mean, it can

  281. be, it is the death nail in every person's yearly

  282. Bible reading plan. I saw a tweet the other day.

  283. A guy said, I'm going to start reading the Bible

  284. for the first time. Where should I start? And

  285. everybody, well, one person said Revelation.

  286. I was like, you're crazy. But everybody was like,

  287. you start in Genesis. You start at the beginning.

  288. Wrong. Start in the Gospels. Because all that

  289. stuff is confusing, it's complex, and it can

  290. really shut some people down. It's hard to grasp.

  291. But also, the law of the flesh is destructive.

  292. It leads us into sin. It leads us away from God.

  293. What we learned last week when we were talking

  294. about the fruit of the Spirit was it opposes

  295. the Spirit. It opposes God. My natural wants

  296. and desires are not God's natural wants and desires.

  297. It leads to death. But the law of Christ is simple

  298. and it's life -giving. And if you've ever given

  299. your life to Christ, if you have striven to live

  300. a life for Christ, to live a life in step with

  301. the Spirit, you know what I mean when I say it's

  302. life -giving. It brings joy. It brings peace.

  303. Whereas trying to make sure I get every single

  304. rule right and check every mark and dot every

  305. I and cross every T, that can be headache inducing.

  306. And it can be the very thing that pushes me away.

  307. But if I will just submit my life to Christ,

  308. I have life. To bear one another's burdens means

  309. to carry the heavy stuff together. The grief,

  310. the failures, the anxieties, the addictions.

  311. It means when I see my brother unable to keep

  312. going, I'm picking him up. When I see my sister

  313. struggling to make it through the day, I pick

  314. her up. I carry some weight for her. You were

  315. never meant to carry all of those things by yourself.

  316. You were never meant to carry the hardships of

  317. life by yourself. And neither were your brothers

  318. and sisters. When we carry one another's burdens,

  319. we are living out the gospel. Because Jesus,

  320. he carried all of our burdens. He took all of

  321. our sin. And he's gone to heaven to prepare a

  322. place for us where failure... Sorrow, addiction,

  323. grief, all of those things, they don't exist

  324. anymore. Jesus is preparing a home where our

  325. burdens are lifted forever. And when we say,

  326. Father, let your kingdom come, what we're saying

  327. is, Father, help us to do that now. Help us to

  328. make this space, make this place, make these

  329. people a people that don't have to bear life's

  330. burdens on their own. Let us build a place. that

  331. is reminiscent of the kingdom that you are going

  332. to bring. So we go and we bear one another's

  333. burdens. And as we get into verse 3, Paul gives

  334. a bit of a warning for those who may not exactly

  335. get it because the idea of helping each other

  336. out isn't easy. Because again, our flesh, our

  337. human desire is to do for self. It's to pick

  338. up my own load. It's to help myself. It's to

  339. feed my own needs. But what Paul says is if anyone

  340. thinks he's something when he's nothing, and

  341. here's the newsflash for all of us, we are all

  342. nothing. He deceives himself. If I were to put

  343. that in simple terms, don't think you're too

  344. good to help. Don't think you're above getting

  345. your hands dirty. Don't think you're above getting

  346. in the weeds with your brothers and sisters and

  347. getting out of the rut. Don't think you're bigger

  348. than the team. And not only don't think you're

  349. too good to help, but also don't think you're

  350. too good for help. Because I got to tell you,

  351. I would not be standing here today if I thought

  352. I was too good for help. We wouldn't make it.

  353. The church isn't supposed to be this museum or

  354. this club for saints. The church was meant to

  355. be a hospital for sinners. It was meant to be

  356. this place where sick people... filled the pews,

  357. or chairs. It was meant to be a place where broken

  358. people are supposed to live, where broken people

  359. come to be mended. This is the place where God

  360. wants to do His best healing. And we all have

  361. a part to play in the operation. Just imagine

  362. a doctor's office. And all the people that go

  363. into making that doctor's office run smoothly,

  364. you've got the receptionist, you've got the nurse,

  365. you've got the techs, you've got the cleaning

  366. people. I mean, you've got all these people that

  367. go into making sure this doctor's office can

  368. do what a doctor's office is supposed to do.

  369. And that's the church. We aren't all the surgeon.

  370. We're not all the nurse. But we all have a part

  371. to play in making sure that when broken people

  372. come in this building, they get fixed. This is

  373. the place where God wants to do His healing.

  374. So we can't fool ourselves by thinking that we're

  375. too good, that we're too important. This is why

  376. it's important to be attentive to ourselves and

  377. to those around us. This is what Paul says in

  378. verse 4 about that attentiveness. He says, Let

  379. each one test his own work, for each will have

  380. to bear his own load. Now Paul is not contradicting

  381. himself. The first time I read this I was like,

  382. wait, he just said bear one another's burdens.

  383. But now he's saying you have to carry your own

  384. load. He's not contradicting himself. What Paul

  385. is doing here is he's contrasting this shared

  386. weight versus the personal responsibility. Because

  387. we all have our own personal responsibility.

  388. We've got the things that we're responsible for.

  389. But there is a shared burden. There's a shared

  390. load. The word there in verse 2 for burden. actually

  391. refers to something that's too heavy for one

  392. person to carry. So go back to our treasure chest

  393. analogy. It's something that I cannot carry on

  394. my own, and neither can you, no matter how strong

  395. you think you are. But the word for load in verse

  396. 5 refers to something more like a backpack. Now,

  397. we've all gone to school, some of us more than

  398. others, and we've all carried a backpack. Now

  399. there are some days where that backpack gets

  400. pretty heavy, right? Any of you ever have teachers

  401. that made you bring every textbook to class?

  402. No? Okay, good. Neither have I. But I've seen

  403. it. I've seen people that had to carry every

  404. textbook in their backpack. And it's a heavy

  405. deal. But they could still carry it. So you have

  406. this idea of this treasure chest that's too big,

  407. too massive, too weighty for one person to carry.

  408. But then you also have a backpack. That one person

  409. absolutely can carry even on its worst day. So

  410. yes, we do carry one another's burdens. But we

  411. are all also responsible for our own walk with

  412. God. I can't walk your walk for you. I can walk

  413. your walk with you. I absolutely can walk your

  414. walk with you and you can walk with me. But I

  415. can't walk it for you. I mean, you've got to

  416. do some stuff here too. It's kind of like in

  417. a marriage, you know, everybody says you both

  418. have to give 100%. Wrong. Not everybody can do

  419. that. Some days I've got 10 and Eliza's got 90.

  420. Some days she's got 10 and I've got 50 and then

  421. we're in trouble. And that's where marriage counseling

  422. comes in. No, seriously, we can't do it all.

  423. We've got to share some load, but we do have

  424. to give something. I can't give zero. If I give

  425. 0 % and Eliza's always giving 100, guess where

  426. Eliza's going to be? Not with me. We've got to

  427. give something. So we all have a part to play,

  428. but we can't do it all. I want you to think of

  429. it this way. A soldier will carry his own pack.

  430. A soldier has his own weight to bear. But if

  431. a fellow soldier gets wounded, what's going to

  432. happen? They're going to pick him up and carry

  433. him to the finish. They're going to pick that

  434. pack up, they're going to carry the soldier,

  435. and they're going to make sure he gets where

  436. he needs to go. And that's what we do as followers

  437. of Christ. And Paul says, let each one test his

  438. own work. That word test is like to examine,

  439. to look very closely, to very deeply look into,

  440. to make sure I'm doing what I can, to make sure

  441. I'm carrying my load. So it's to say, don't be

  442. lazy. Don't just sit idly by while everybody

  443. else carries it for you. Look closely. We live

  444. in a culture obsessed with comparison. Social

  445. media, the news, TV, competitions, envy. But

  446. Paul says, don't test your neighbor. Stop worrying

  447. about what your neighbor looks like. Stop worrying

  448. about what they got. But look at yourself. Test

  449. yourself. Take responsibility for your own growth.

  450. For your own spiritual growth. And so now we

  451. kind of move into a bit of a separate section.

  452. But still connected in Paul's letter, starting

  453. here in verse 6. Let the one who has taught the

  454. word share all good things with the one who teaches.

  455. Paul's basically saying, pay the preacher. I'm

  456. joking. Joking. I don't want to spend a lot of

  457. time on this because it's not the point. But

  458. it is important. Paul is making a practical point.

  459. Support those who feed you spiritually. Now,

  460. that's not just the preacher. It's the elders.

  461. It's the deacons. It's the teachers. It's the

  462. volunteers. It's the church. Support the work

  463. of the church because this is where you come

  464. to get healing. This is where you come to get

  465. teaching. This is where you come to be fed. So

  466. support those who feed you spiritually. Not because

  467. we deserve it. We haven't done anything special.

  468. You haven't done anything special. But because

  469. it's right. Because when you invest in kingdom

  470. work, And kingdom work can now continue happening

  471. when you are sowing seeds. You are then sowing

  472. seeds into eternal soil. And Paul warns us to

  473. not take this truth for granted. Don't ignore

  474. it. Here's what he says. Don't be deceived. Paul

  475. likes to use that phrase, don't be deceived.

  476. Basically, don't fool yourself. Don't be deceived.

  477. God is not mocked. For whatever one sows, that

  478. will he also reap. That's a universal principle.

  479. You plant something in the garden, you take care

  480. of it, you water it. If you've got a green thumb,

  481. it grows. If you don't, you're me. You make sure

  482. what you plant, you pour into, it is going to

  483. grow. What you sow, you reap. You can't plant

  484. corn and expect to grow peaches. What you sow,

  485. you reap. And so when it comes to the kingdom,

  486. we are sowing into. Kingdom work. And if we want

  487. to see souls saved, if we want to see the kingdom

  488. come and be established here on this earth, we've

  489. got to sow more than what we have been. If we

  490. sow selfishness, we'll reap emptiness. If we

  491. sow generosity, we'll reap abundance. Do you

  492. see how this works? What you put in, you get

  493. out. That's what Paul says as he continues in

  494. verse 8. For the one who sows to his own flesh

  495. will from the flesh reap corruption. But the

  496. one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit

  497. reap eternal life. I want to live forever. And

  498. I don't want to be corrupted. Corruption is brokenness.

  499. Corruption is weakness. Corruption is sickness.

  500. I don't want that. I want abundant life. I want

  501. eternal life. And so what I have to do is I have

  502. to sow. to the spirit, not the flesh. You cannot

  503. reap the fruit of the spirit if you never plant

  504. in the soil of the spirit. If all I'm doing is

  505. just pouring out selfishness and pouring out

  506. apathy and pouring out envy and anger and all

  507. of these fruits of the flesh, I will never bear

  508. the fruit of the spirit and I'll never taste

  509. abundant and eternal life. And here's the best

  510. part though. When we sow to God, when we give

  511. Him our time, when we give Him our energy, our

  512. talents, our resources, God multiplies it. He

  513. turns those small seeds into these eternal massive

  514. harvests. But sometimes, you know this, sowing

  515. into other people, sowing into relationships,

  516. sowing into other things besides ourselves, it

  517. can be tiresome, can't it? It can be very tiresome.

  518. It's not natural for us. It's not the human strong

  519. suit. Remember, the spirit and the flesh oppose

  520. each other. They don't work together. And so

  521. the flesh says, pour into yourself. And that's

  522. easy. It's easy to pour into ourselves. Now,

  523. the fruit it bears doesn't taste good, but it's

  524. easy to pour into ourselves. The fruit of the

  525. spirit, it's a little bit harder. But the fruit

  526. that it bears tastes so much better. And that's

  527. how... This all works. Paul is saying, don't

  528. be discouraged. In fact, he gives us some encouragement

  529. here in verse 9. Let us not grow weary of doing

  530. good, for in due season we will reap if we do

  531. not give up. I was driving the other day and

  532. I was looking at the leaves and everybody's like,

  533. oh, the leaves are so pretty. It took them a

  534. little bit longer to get here this year and everything.

  535. And I'm just thinking. You endure the hot summer

  536. even though it's not hot here. So y 'all got

  537. to stop complaining about the heat. It's not

  538. hot here. But you endure the heat of the summer

  539. and the pain of the heat and the sun bearing

  540. down on you. You endure that for this weather

  541. that we've got right now. And for this pretty

  542. scenery that we've got around us right now, you

  543. endure it because you know better days are coming.

  544. And that's Paul's encouragement to the tired

  545. elder or deacon. That's Paul's encouragement

  546. to the discouraged parent. That's his encouragement

  547. to the volunteer who feels unseen or to the person

  548. who feels like they've been doing everything

  549. they can, but they just can't get it all right.

  550. Paul says, don't. grow weary. Don't give up.

  551. Don't let weariness steal your joy because the

  552. seed you planted, it may not have sprouted yet.

  553. It may not be bearing fruit yet, but harvest

  554. time is coming. So just hold on a few more days.

  555. Just a few more days. Here's how Paul ties it

  556. all together. So then, as we have opportunity,

  557. let us do good. To everyone. I want to highlight

  558. that word there because I don't think we really

  559. comprehend that sometimes. Everyone. There's

  560. no qualifiers there. There's no dividers, no

  561. descriptors. Everyone. You learn that vocabulary

  562. word very early on in life. Everybody. Everyone.

  563. And especially to those who are of the household

  564. of faith. So do good to everybody. Make sure

  565. you take care of everybody. Treat them well.

  566. Make sure that when they see you, they see and

  567. they feel and they taste the fruit of the Spirit.

  568. Everybody. And especially those that are part

  569. of the family of God. This freedom that we've

  570. been given, it's a freedom from the flesh. Because

  571. again, the flesh is selfish. And the flesh is

  572. envious. It's self -serving and self -seeking.

  573. We're freed from that. We're not bound by those

  574. chains anymore. It's a freedom from that. It's

  575. a freedom to do good to other people, to bless

  576. believers and unbelievers alike. It's to make

  577. the gospel, the good news of Christ, visible

  578. through the way that we live and the way that

  579. we love. I want you to go back to that treasure

  580. chest illustration. You found the treasure. You

  581. carried it together. Along the way, some got

  582. tired. Some got hurt. Some stumbled. But you

  583. never dropped. You carried it together until

  584. you reached the locksmith. And when you opened

  585. it, when those locks were undone and that chest

  586. was open, you see a beautiful sight that you

  587. know will change your life and those that you

  588. interact with forever. We carry the weight of

  589. this life together. We bear each other's burdens.

  590. We lift one another up when we fall. We invest

  591. in each other and in each other's ministries,

  592. each other's lives. We keep doing good even when

  593. it's hard, even when we don't feel like it, even

  594. when it doesn't feel good for us. All until one

  595. day when Christ returns and the treasure chest

  596. is open, we get to see this beautiful home that

  597. Jesus is bringing to us where we get to live

  598. with him. Forever. Where we get to sit at the

  599. Father's table and we get to enjoy a meal so,

  600. so good that no one has ever tasted before. When

  601. we get to have a life and experience a life that

  602. is not full of sorrow, it's not full of hurt.

  603. In fact, those things don't exist there. So we

  604. bear one another's burdens and we keep pressing

  605. on so that one day we get to experience that

  606. together. So right now, I want you to think,

  607. who do you know that's caught in sin, that's

  608. trapped, that they've slipped off the road? Maybe

  609. instead of walking away from them, maybe instead

  610. of cutting them off, maybe instead of trying

  611. to cancel them, maybe God's calling you to walk

  612. with them. In a spirit of gentleness. So that

  613. you can help guide them back onto the path that

  614. God has laid out for us. Ask yourself, whose

  615. burden could you help carry? Is there somebody

  616. among us that you know is struggling that you

  617. could do a little bit of extra lifting? You could

  618. carry some of their load. You may not be able

  619. to carry all of it, but you can carry some of

  620. it. Maybe it's somebody in your small group.

  621. Maybe it's somebody in your Bible class. Maybe

  622. it's somebody that you work with. I don't know

  623. who it is, but who do you know that's got a burden

  624. that you can help carry? Or maybe you're the

  625. person that's under the burden, that you're struggling

  626. to carry it today. Maybe you're the person that

  627. slipped off the path and you're caught in sin.

  628. I don't know where you are or who you know that

  629. needs the good news. That needs a little help

  630. down the road. But what I do know is we all know

  631. somebody. Even if that somebody is us. And if

  632. that somebody is you or if you have someone that

  633. you want to pray for. That you know you could

  634. help bear the load. Or you know this church family

  635. could help bear the load. So that we can all

  636. see that prize together. We're inviting you now

  637. to share that burden with us today as we stand.
