  47. I'm going to pray for the men who went to Campy Can this week

  48. And myself and RJ Sherwood will test me about what went on there

  49. So you can know a little more first hand what that was like

  50. And we're just going to do all the glory to God

  51. I actually have to pray for my family this coming week

  52. As we travel Tuesday through next week

  53. It's the first away vacation that we've taken in a number of years now

  54. So we're glad to be able to do that

  55. God arranged it, saved us for it, that kind of thing

  56. I actually will pray for us

  57. And then pray for some recent diagnoses

  58. We'll get into the details of that

  59. We've got a couple members in our church that have recent diagnoses with health concerns

  60. And they'll share with you about this if they want to

  61. Probably just ask you to pray for them

  62. Because we know that God is the ultimate healer

  63. He's an amazing man

  64. We've seen cancer miraculous heal before

  65. We've seen all kinds of amazing things

  66. So we'll ask God to do His amazing work and trust Him for us

  67. Let's pray together

  68. Father in heaven, this is your day

  69. It's a Sunday

  70. It's an opportunity to gather together in this building

  71. That you provide as a bond to the church

  72. And we are the church

  73. We are grateful to be a part of the bond

  74. To each be a member

  75. And our members that are missing

  76. Because they're far afield

  77. Except for traveling, or just hurting, whatever

  78. Are greatly missed

  79. And for those who are here today

  80. And aching because somebody is missing

  81. Or aching because of circumstances

  82. That happen to me and Lord

  83. We want to set those things aside

  84. We want to trade them

  85. For the glory that you have

  86. For the love that you have for us

  87. For the peace that you instill in us

  88. We want to give up our own

  89. Worries, regrets

  90. Concerns, struggles

  91. And instead

  92. Let you leave

  93. Let you heal

  94. Let you provide

  95. Let you empower us to do the things

  96. That we have to do

  97. That right now at least is worship you

  98. And hear from your word

  99. Spend a little time together

  100. Spend a little time learning and growing

  101. To pray for those who are absent

  102. We praise you for what went on this week

  103. You can't, you can't

  104. Even with my 24, 36 hours of recovery

  105. And I know others probably want to do the same thing

  106. Lord, you are still well worth it

  107. Everything that it could have been

  108. And more

  109. Whatever the problems

  110. Whatever the stumbling, Lord

  111. You were there and helped us through it all

  112. Plus our time of worship

  113. With your presence

  114. We know you are everywhere that you want to be

  115. And you want to be here

  116. So we want to just tell you that we don't want to be in the way

  117. We submit this to you

  118. This time, this effort, our voices

  119. The conditions of our hearts

  120. Thank you Lord for taking our hearts of stone

  121. And giving us hearts of flesh

  122. To care about one another and others in what they are going through

  123. And to make a difference

  124. We pray Lord that we will do that now

  125. By worship and by sending this out

  126. Over the Facebook

  127. And by putting it out on podcasts

  128. We pray for those all over the world

  129. In 11 countries that are listening to our podcast

  130. Probably later

  131. Probably next week, this episode

  132. Next week because I don't know if I'll get it

  133. Before I go out of town

  134. But Lord we pray for them

  135. So that they hear the messages, they hear the words

  136. They sing the words of hope

  137. That they will be touched by you

  138. Affected by you, drawn closer by you

  139. We just want to hear your voice

  140. We pray for just that today

  141. Work through us and in us

  142. And on us in Jesus name we pray

  143. Amen

  144. Alright, I need children to the front

  145. Zaden, come here

  146. Everybody on your feet

  147. We're going to do some fun stuff

  148. But we have some Bible verses first

  149. Come here Zaden

  150. I need you to read this

  151. No? No? Alright

  152. Do that

  153. Really loud

  154. Come on, read it

  155. So come God, ready

  156. Gladness come before

  157. And restore for sinning

  158. Come up here

  159. Come on, come on, come on

  160. You can be a child, get up

  161. Therefore you too

  162. Have grief now

  163. But I will see

  164. You again

  165. And you, your heart will rejoice

  166. And no one will take

  167. Your joy away from you

  168. For his anger is

  169. But for a moment, his favor is for a lifetime

  170. Weeping may last for the night

  171. But a shot of joy comes in the morning

  172. Now may the God of hope

  173. Share you with all joy and peace

  174. In believing so that

  175. You will abound in hope

  176. By the power of the Holy Spirit

  177. Amen

  178. You are our glory and joy

  179. You will go out with joy

  180. And be led forth

  181. With peace

  182. The mountains and the hill

  183. Will break forth

  184. Into shouts of joy before you

  185. And all the trees

  186. Of the film

  187. Will clop their hands

  188. But the angels said to them, do not be afraid

  189. For behold, I bring you good news

  190. Of great joy which will be for all people

  191. Those are all Bible verses

  192. About joy, so now

  193. We're gonna do

  194. The joy song

  195. If it's not up there

  196. Go, it's not ready

  197. Alright, so what I need you to do is

  198. Everybody stand up

  199. And put your foot out like this

  200. Make sure you're not kicking

  201. This much space

  202. Stand up, come on

  203. Don't get in my kick

  204. You can do it, you can do it

  205. I'll stand here on one foot and wait

  206. Right here, this is your spot

  207. Alright

  208. So if you go to the next slide

  209. We're gonna do this four times

  210. The first time we're gonna do it slow

  211. Really, you can learn the motions if you don't already know it

  212. Okay

  213. Ready?

  214. You should

  215. I've got the joy down in my heart

  216. Deep, deep down in my heart

  217. Sell it

  218. J-O-Y down in my heart

  219. Deep, deep down in my heart

  220. Where'd it come from?

  221. Jesus put it there

  222. And nothing can

  223. Destroy it, destroy it, destroy it

  224. Hooh!

  225. I've got the joy down in my heart

  226. Deep, deep down in my heart

  227. Okay, a little faster

  228. I've got the joy down in my heart

  229. Deep, deep down in my heart

  230. Sell it

  231. J-O-Y down in my heart

  232. Deep, deep down in my heart

  233. Where'd it come from?

  234. Jesus put it there

  235. And nothing can destroy it

  236. Destroy it, destroy it, hooh!

  237. I've got the joy down in my heart

  238. Deep, deep down in my heart

  239. I've got

  240. I've got the joy down in my heart

  241. Deep, deep down in my heart

  242. Sell it

  243. J-O-Y down in my heart

  244. Deep, deep down in my heart

  245. Where'd it come from?

  246. Jesus put it there

  247. And nothing can destroy it

  248. Destroy it, destroy it, hooh!

  249. I've got the joy down in my heart

  250. Super, speed

  251. I've got the joy down in my heart

  252. Deep deep down in my heart, deep deep down in my heart.

  253. Where'd it come from?

  254. Jesus put it there and nothing can destroy it,

  255. destroy it, destroy it.

  256. I've got the joy down in my heart,

  257. deep deep down in my heart.

  258. Yay!

  259. Yeah!

  260. Yeah!

  261. Yeah!

  262. Yeah!

  263. Yeah!

  264. Yeah!

  265. Yeah!

  266. Yeah!

  267. Woo!

  268. Whoa!

  269. All bad, girl.

  270. Tyler.

  271. ganz.

  272. Sugger Callers.

  273. Oh, I can tell you, you raise a smile on a starry night

  274. You are the blessing you have

  275. You bring me good news, oh, I can tell you

  276. I'll show you the stars every day as we love you all the way

  277. You are the blessing you have

  278. You bring me good news, oh, I can tell you

  279. I'll show you the stars every day as we love you all the way

  280. You are the blessing you have

  281. The goofy picture is the only one where everyone was looking

  282. It makes perfect sense

  283. Okay, so yes, we'll talk briefly about Camp You Can

  284. and our main focus is obviously on what got this

  285. I'm going to ask a few questions that we have with the boys with us today

  286. and we'll see if they can answer the questions

  287. Okay, so first of all, name one speaker from Camp You Can

  288. Jaycee

  289. Jaycee, okay, tell me a little bit about Jaycee, anything you know

  290. He comes from a very big, not a lot of people

  291. He used to work for a very bad company down in Mexico

  292. and he was jailed for 9 years

  293. Jaycee went to jail for the first time when he was 9

  294. In fact, he actually was working for the Colombian drug cartel

  295. and taking a contract to kill people by the time he was 9 or 10 years old

  296. and spent most of his life in jail

  297. and then fairly recently actually, he was about 5 years old

  298. and he was our camp pastor

  299. and he had his life for the Lord

  300. and he was our camp pastor for the week

  301. So that's pretty cool

  302. Alright, somebody else give me another speaker

  303. Anybody else got one?

  304. Jaycee's got another one, are you listening Caleb?

  305. You had your hand up before and I doubt you remember the same person

  306. Do you have another speaker?

  307. Okay, Caleb, go

  308. Okay, tell me about H Good a little bit

  309. Anything you remember

  310. Tell me one of the things that he told us

  311. If you do easy things, your life will be hard

  312. If you do hard things, your life will be easy

  313. Yeah, if you do the easy things, your life will be hard

  314. but if you do the hard things, your life will be easy

  315. and I really suck about that, we're at the neighborhood of us

  316. You got another thing, go ahead

  317. He said, he said, we must overcome hate

  318. That's right, one of the things that we have to overcome

  319. a number of things, one of the things we have to overcome

  320. is haters, people who hate us, people who hate God

  321. What was his name?

  322. Doug Worthamson

  323. Okay, Doug Worthamson, tell me a little bit about Doug Worthamson

  324. He spoke about the Christian diet

  325. Yeah, do you remember what he said before?

  326. Did I earn today?

  327. Yeah, that's good, very good

  328. Did I earn today?

  329. Somebody later said in the morning, but he always

  330. get ready to go to bed, or at night he asked himself, did I earn today?

  331. In other words, did I do the things today that

  332. I should have in light of who I am, in light of what God has already done

  333. Did I do it right? Did I earn today?

  334. I mostly expect, not just about food, right?

  335. But about life in general, discipline is the only thing

  336. that we're supposed to do, very good, very good

  337. Okay, what's an M&M?

  338. Remember an M&M?

  339. That's right, go ahead

  340. Measure an L on the same table

  341. This is like a real difficult thing

  342. Measure and manage

  343. Can't manage what you can't measure

  344. So you can't adjust or correct if you don't measure

  345. If you don't check yourself or check what it is, check how big it is, how small it is, how fast it is, how long it is

  346. If you don't check it, you can't change it

  347. So you cannot manage what you don't measure

  348. Okay, so what was your big thing, what was the big takeaway from the camp?

  349. What was the big thing that affected you or you thought about? Go ahead

  350. What did you think was important? What do you remember the most?

  351. Don't say swimming, although that was very cool

  352. What was the takeaway?

  353. If you tell somebody about Camp You Can, what are you going to be sure and tell them about?

  354. It was the thing that I don't think we're going to be doing

  355. That's the most important thing, how he changed up from last year

  356. Yeah, that was neat, wasn't it?

  357. We're talking about Lawrence Punderberg, Lawrence Punderberg played in the NBA for many years, retired from the NBA

  358. And he told some interesting stories about winning in the NBA

  359. Who was the basketball star that he dunked on one time?

  360. Shaq O'Neal, right? Was that Shaq?

  361. Yeah, he dunked on Shaq one time and he talks back to, was that Shaq? One time?

  362. I think I don't remember, but I think it was last year

  363. Yeah, I might have been, I'm not sure

  364. One professional basketball player who's considered to be one of the best in the world

  365. He talks back to him one time and then Lawrence, you don't talk back

  366. They're really great players, it just makes you look like an idiot

  367. So I think it's probably a lesson you can take away

  368. Anyway, so he was saying this year what he did was instead of just coming and just talking, he showed them

  369. He did exercises and he had a bunch of, yeah, he brought other professional basketball stars and college coaches and stuff like that with him

  370. Right? Two others

  371. One was from football

  372. And they actually did activities like conditioning activities and passing and shooting and all kinds of stuff that they did

  373. Instead of just talking, they got up and they did all kinds of cool activities

  374. So that was really nice

  375. Yeah, it was hard too though, right? Some of those look like they were pretty hard

  376. Okay, Jason, what was your takeaway? You're going to tell somebody one thing for sure about Camp O, what would you say?

  377. Nice and loud

  378. It's a fact that over 100 kids decided to come and we had about over a quarter of kids

  379. Probably like a fourth of the kids there, they'd like to use us

  380. That's right, so we had about 110 kids between the ages of 9 and 15

  381. And over a quarter of them, I don't know the exact number, over a quarter of them made first time students

  382. That's right

  383. I would more than that, I know that

  384. It was probably about 25, 30

  385. But I also know that not everyone was tracked because they didn't have a way to make sure that everybody got their name all list or anything like that

  386. The one, I can't be taken, I had three myself

  387. So, nobody got my numbers from me

  388. I did, I don't have to

  389. I like you, hi

  390. That's right, yep, and then there were another, equal to roughly that many at least that region of their life, right

  391. And there were a lot of boys who came forward for prayer about situations in their life

  392. And it was pretty powerful moving of the Holy Spirit

  393. So, for me, I just want to say I was blessed to be able to do it

  394. It was exhausting because I got about four and a half hours broken sleep a night

  395. By the time they would go to bed and get up, I think they were, and it's definitely synthesized that they had a rough cabin

  396. They were getting sleep, those

  397. Maybe they were all around, I don't know, but

  398. There were about, I think, three kids who were calm

  399. One of them was me, and the person above me was the person above me

  400. Yeah, so three kids in a cabin of 12 that were calm at night

  401. And the others were talking until, until somebody made them shut up basically

  402. We had to at least get a Torrell, I mean, what time limit?

  403. A what?

  404. A Torrell

  405. Oh really?

  406. Wow

  407. And he said it was like two o'clock and we all fell asleep

  408. Yeah, well I went in there the one night and they were all sleeping by one o'clock, so

  409. Had I known that it was like that every night, I would have gone in there more often, but

  410. My room was actually really good, but they didn't go to bed until close to one

  411. They were supposed to get up at seven, but I had to get up plenty of time before that

  412. I was taking my shower and organizing because I was getting up by six

  413. I said one, get up at six, one, one thirty, get up at six, and four and a half, five hours sleep

  414. And every time somebody would unzip their sleep bag, every time the door would open, every time somebody

  415. Step on the floor, every time the bed was creak, I would wake up because I was sleeping by the door

  416. And I had to make sure they weren't sleeping in the room, so I was waking up all night long

  417. So I came home, I was pretty exhausted, but I would say, that being said, it was well worth it

  418. I did enjoy myself a great deal

  419. I got the blessing of taking the hikers camping, 18 hikers went camping on the first day

  420. And only six went on the second day, and both trails were awesome

  421. And they said, we almost got lost, they kept saying, we're lost, we're lost

  422. You really cannot be lost, I knew exactly where it was at, I knew the direction to go

  423. You can't be lost, we may have lost the trail, which we did, like three times, lose the trail

  424. But we were never lost, okay, it was pretty cool

  425. There was a point at which the trail ended here, and then about like 50 yards away

  426. The trail started again, and there was a river in between, we had to cross the river and look for the trail

  427. And we got on the trail again

  428. We saw the rock line, we started to run around the river, and I saw the look-wise

  429. It looked like there was a waterfall, but the water was so still

  430. And it looked like there was a waterfall, but then there was just the reflection

  431. Yeah, cool, very cool

  432. Alright, RJ, what would you like to say about camping?

  433. Actually, it was just a huge blessing

  434. To see all these kids come in from different backgrounds, different families

  435. The coolest thing about it that I really enjoyed is watching them all get to know each other

  436. And learn each other's story, and see how different backgrounds can come together and become best of friends

  437. And obviously, God was there, he showed up in great ways

  438. I think for this year, for me especially, there was a lot in me that I was taught by some of these kids

  439. And it's crazy to think that an 8-year-old kid can teach you so much

  440. As far as it goes, I would say, yeah, definitely exhausting

  441. It was very exhausting

  442. We ended up doing black football for the first time, and I did the playing quarterback

  443. And it's exhausting

  444. But it was a lot of fun, it was cool to see these kids come together and have fun

  445. And most importantly, to understand that God is here, he's with us, he cares about us

  446. And it's cool to see that these young kids are given the opportunity to learn, God really is

  447. We have the planners to do a black football tournament next year, that's true

  448. A couple things I would add, in total a dream of one

  449. We ate three square meals a day, and basically with Buffet, you go back up and get as much as you want

  450. And one thing that struck me was that many, many of the kids that were there

  451. And it probably applies to some of our own kids, they're not normally getting three square meals a day

  452. Grabbing a bowl of cereal, that's not a square meal, contrary to what some people might think

  453. So they had three square meals a day, and by the second day, I never heard so much flatulence coming out of 110 boys

  454. Everywhere you walk, you walk in a hall here, all over the place

  455. Because they're eating real food for the first time in their lives, or the first time in months or years, and a lot of it

  456. And then, that was a factor, and then also the decompressing from all the time

  457. No phones, no tablets, for the better part of four days

  458. And starting on the second day, you could actually see people's eyes opening up

  459. Like they were paying attention to what was going on around them

  460. And it's not like we have a lot, it's not like that a lot of times

  461. It's a lot of, walking down the hallway, I look at my phone, right, or I'm just listening to you

  462. But I'm actually playing a game, or whatever

  463. And that was, that was powerful, because they were alive, they were doing stuff

  464. And I thought about that at Lord's Court to my heart, how we can focus on something

  465. It doesn't have to be your phone or electronics, it could be anything

  466. It could be your relationship, it could be your job struggles, it could be your health struggles

  467. We get focused on that, and everything else dims

  468. And that's, we're supposed to be like that, because that focus then is supposed to be on Jesus, right

  469. So we focus on Jesus, and everything else dims

  470. But when we focus on something else, then our relationship with God dims

  471. So it becomes hard to see clearly

  472. And so it was really cool that they were able to put that down, put it away, and live

  473. You know, and then it was just, it became about, okay, what are we doing next?

  474. We're checking the schedule, what's going on next?

  475. What is he saying, what are they doing?

  476. And there were issues with kids falling asleep, because, again, they weren't getting out of sleep at night

  477. And their bellies were full

  478. And then they would wake them up, have them do exercise and things like that, wake them up

  479. But I would just say, you know, it was a great opportunity

  480. I would love to believe, initially at the end of the year, we thought we were going to have

  481. Three or four more men come from New Heights, and we could definitely use it

  482. Twenty leaders counting teenagers, twenty-two actually counting the student mentors

  483. Is not enough to really interact with every boy

  484. It really is, and to be able to bring the word and talk to one on one

  485. Like, I couldn't even know it, I think I got maybe half their names, at most

  486. You know, and they were wearing our name tags, so you didn't really half have their name

  487. But then you had to walk up to them and flip, hey, and flip over their name tag to find out what it was

  488. You know, to be able to talk to them by their name

  489. And Terrell was up in the microphone, red shirt, yellow jacket

  490. You know, calling people by what they're wearing, because he didn't know everybody's names

  491. And so, the more leaders, and they wanted to plan an arrest period for the leaders

  492. So each day you would get like an hour off

  493. And it wasn't enough leaders to do that

  494. There was maybe only one or two leaders that weren't physically doing something

  495. So, that would be huge, and then, and here's the great blessing

  496. One, 110 boys, two, 18 boys from Toledo

  497. Up from 11 different neighborhoods, which is really cool

  498. Might be that Councilor Oxford, so, but 11 different neighborhoods, and really cool

  499. And then, next year, so this year they doubled from last year, about 50 last year

  500. This year we had 110, next year they would like to have 200

  501. And the gymnasium will hold it, there is room for it

  502. And the housing will hold it, and the grounds will hold it, and the pool will hold it, and the pool is huge

  503. So, that would be really cool

  504. So, pray for that now, God just might do something awesome, yes sir

  505. Two quick things, one, it's how all the kids were all tired during the day and at night, they don't want to go to sleep

  506. And then another thing is, they were talking about if they were to have 200 kids, they might have to get another captain

  507. Oh yeah, they definitely would, yeah

  508. We were just, I think about 130 is the most we could put in that building, something like that

  509. Or like, there were like four rooms not being used

  510. So that's, so that's, they were hating those four, more than I am, I were

  511. Yeah, eight bunk beds, so 16 kids, so that's room for 64

  512. And then we had maybe like about eight or ten beds empty

  513. So we could get close to 200 and then after that we'd have to be in two of those big buildings

  514. So basically it was all huge big cabins, like this hall we've got three cabins on it with eight bunk beds

  515. This hall we've got three, this hall we've got three, and then there were 10 showers on each side

  516. Plenty of bathrooms, and then they had a big common area in the middle and that's where we all met

  517. In the morning for devotional and stuff

  518. Alright, RJ would you pray for us then and we'll worship God a little bit more and just be sure to thank God

  519. I pray that all the kids there that made the decision to follow the New Lord that they can go to the church and pray for them

  520. Your Heavenly Father I want to thank you for this time, thank you for the blessing that we had at camp, I pray that all the kids there that made the decision to follow the New Lord that they met sincerely and they continue to grow and learn

  521. God I thank you for all the meddling that helped out, I pray for their well-being, their safety, their health and all that

  522. I pray for Anthony's family and the other couple of wives and the loved ones and we all know how hard that can be

  523. Even though his family member is always rough, but God I pray that you comfort them and let them know that he might be gone but he's rejoicing with you

  524. And that is probably the greatest thing I've heard, pray for the kinds of offering that they use to glorify your name and make sure that you stay up top

  551. Music

  552. Before we begin, we're going to have a brief object lesson, so I need one volunteer, anybody want to volunteer?

  553. I'll volunteer to hold somebody, going once, going twice, alright come on

  554. Okay, so I have a fan, this is no different than all the fans that the ladies use to keep themselves cool during the service

  555. And so if I were, we're going to play a little game of hide and seek, and I said to you I'd like you to hide that fan anywhere in the room, not on your person obviously, but anywhere else in the room

  556. Where someone might not find it if they were searching for it, where would you hide it?

  557. Anywhere in the room?

  558. Probably in somebody else's first or something, or like under that stand, maybe inside the piano, somewhere hidden

  559. So if you went right now and hid it, we would all know where you hid it, and so probably we would be able to find it, most likely, right?

  560. So if you put it somewhere inaccessible, like if we put it up on top of the door up there, then Jamie couldn't get it

  561. Maybe Alicia couldn't get it, but somebody would just push a chair over, right?

  562. What if you had a ladder, does that change where you can hide the thing?

  563. Yeah

  564. Okay, so then we could put it up high, you could put it up in the heater vent, up there, in the heater vent

  565. I have a frame that I can hold to you, and then it would also be out of view, okay?

  566. Alright, so what if I take this away, and I ask you the same question about the bear

  567. Would you hide the bear somewhere where no one can find it?

  568. Go ahead, do it now, hide the bear somewhere where no one can find it

  569. What bear?

  570. What bear? Does anybody know where the bear is?

  571. Jason knows where the bear is, so does he, do you know where the bear is Jason?

  572. Where's the bear?

  573. I see the bear

  574. Okay, how many people knew where the bear was?

  575. I saw it, I didn't see it

  576. Alright, so there is a thing, it's kind of a literary quote called the case of the purloin letter

  577. It's a story, it's actually by Sherlock Holmes, one of the investigators, sorry, by Edgar Allan Poe

  578. One of the investigators, Edgar Allan Poe, created it that's like Sherlock Holmes

  579. And the case of the purloin letter is they search for the letter all throughout the story

  580. And then they eventually find it, guess where?

  581. In plain view, right?

  582. One of the places that things are often hidden that no one will find them is in plain view

  583. Have you ever seen anybody stick a piece of paper on somebody's back that says kick me?

  584. Don't do that, it's not nice, but have you ever seen that? Sure you have, right?

  585. So it's in plain view, but it's behind you, so if you're not looking directly at it you wouldn't see it

  586. If you're sitting over here like Josh, wouldn't have seen the bear because the piano's in the way

  587. And that kind of thing, alright?

  588. So it is possible to hide something in plain view and for it not to be found

  589. Using a ladder, for example, you could set that thing up out of reach

  590. So then it could be literally, there it is, but if you take the ladder away

  591. They're going, oh I can't, I see it, it's right there, but I can't get to it

  592. Right? And that could happen, for example, if you wanted to try to adjust the Wi-Fi extender up there

  593. You would definitely need a ladder, even standing on a chair would not be enough, right?

  594. We can adjust that camera by standing on a chair, but that camera you can't reach by standing on a chair

  595. Does that make sense? Alright, so I want you to bear those things in mind with me

  596. The text for today is just four verses and it continues in Deuteronomy 26 where we left off

  597. So let's go to, thank you very much, let's go to Deuteronomy 26

  598. I'm there, anybody else? Got your Bibles?

  599. Uh oh, well you'll just have to listen real good, okay?

  600. If you get too tired you can stand up or do push-ups

  601. He's thinking, no I don't want to do push-ups

  602. Alright, so Deuteronomy chapter 26 beginning in verse 16

    Deuteronomy 26 chapter mention

  603. Now we read 16 last week so this is a reminder so you can see how it bridges over

  604. It says, this day the Lord your God commands you to do these statutes and ordinances

  605. You shall therefore be careful to do them with all your heart and with all your soul

  606. And that's where we stopped at last week, and we start in 17

  607. 17 says, the first declaration, here we go

  608. You have today declared the Lord to be your God

  609. And that you would walk in his ways and keep his statutes, his commandments and his ordinances

  610. And listen to his voice, okay? So there's a list of things here

  611. They have declared that he is their God, I hope that we have declared that the Lord is our God

  612. In some cases that may not be so, and before we're done we're going to see why it's so important, okay?

  613. Have you declared that the Lord is your God?

  614. And having declared that the Lord is your God, you would walk in his ways

  615. Now this word here in the Hebrew in the ways is very similar to a forest path

  616. It's a direction that people have gone and so the ground shows passage

  617. We realize this is the path because the underbrush, the detritus is worn away where people have walked before us

  618. And so that's the word, it's talking about the way, okay?

  619. So you would walk in his ways, the ways not only that God walks, but the ways that people who are in relationship with God walk

  620. And that you would keep his statutes

  621. Does anybody know the difference between statutes, commandments, and ordinances?

  622. Because there's a list here, we're going to keep his statutes, his commandments, and his ordinances

  623. So a statute is a prescription

  624. Has anybody here ever had a medicine?

  625. It says take two pills one time a day, take one pill at bedtime, one pill at night, that's a prescription

  626. These are not prescriptions for your medicine, these are prescriptions for the way that God would want you to live

  627. So God's statutes are prescribed for situations

  628. It might say if this happens then do that

  629. When in this situation, do this and so on

  630. God's prescriptions if you will, or his statutes, his commandments are pretty easy

  631. That's God's directions

  632. It's what he's commanded us to do

  633. And before you say well I don't know the whole Bible

  634. Understand that people were following God's commandments before the Bible was ever written

  635. Even some of the ones that we have clearly written in the Bible now

  636. People were figuring out that they were the right thing to do and what God wanted them to do

  637. And doing them even before the Bible was written

  638. And then there's his ordinances

  639. Now an ordinance, if you think of it, kind of look at the structure of the word

  640. You realize it has something to do with orders

  641. Or the process of ordination or ordaining something, making something true

  642. And so his ordinances are like his judgments

  643. So when a priest decides or the church decides or the word makes a judgment about a certain thing

  644. That that thing is bad, right

  645. That's an ordinance, so really what we're talking about are his prescriptions

  646. His directions and his judgments

  647. And that we'll keep those things, that's what we've said

  648. If the Lord is our God then we will keep those things

  649. And it says and listen to his voice

  650. And I submit to you that in their day, listen to his voice meant something different than what it does today

  651. They did not have the written Bible

  652. So they couldn't read it to get what God says

  653. Moses right now in speaking and writing this down is writing down essentially the first five books of the Bible

  654. And that's the first time they will have had that

  655. Before that it was all oral tradition

  656. So to hear God's voice was to hear directly from God or to hear through a prophet

  657. Now you can hear directly from God

  658. You can hear through the teaching of God's word

  659. You can hear through God's word and you can hear from the Holy Spirit in your heart, in your person

  660. So it's different for us

  661. We have more access to God telling us what to do

  662. More access to God's prescriptions, more access to God's directions

  663. And more access to God's judgments than they did

  664. Yet they were supposed to follow these things

  665. In making him their God that was the first declaration

  666. They declared that he is their God and they will do these things

  667. Now the second declaration

  668. The Lord has today declared you to be his people

  669. A treasured possession as he promised you

  670. And that you should keep all his commandments

  671. So his declaration is two part

  672. First of all he says you belong to me

  673. You are my treasured possession, I claim you

  674. And you will keep all of my commandments is part of his declaration

  675. So is God ever wrong in his declarations?

  676. No, God's people whom he claims for himself would keep his commandments

  677. Now if you know a little bit of the history of what's coming for the Israelites

  678. Do they keep his commandments?

  679. They do not

  680. They drift further away

  681. Then a judge rises up and brings them back

  682. And then they're good for a while and then they drift away again

  683. And every time they drift away, they drift further away

  684. So because God's declaration is two part and they are connected

  685. He declares them to be his people, a treasured possession

  686. And they would keep his commandments

  687. Those two things are connected

  688. So we always talk about the contradiction

  689. Like I am a Christian, I love the Lord

  690. Because I love the Lord, I'm going to honor him with this choice

  691. And you see somebody else says, well I'm a Christian, I love the Lord

  692. But I'm not going to honor him with this choice

  693. That's a contradiction

  694. So you're saying something is true

  695. And you're saying it's going to affect your actions

  696. But then it doesn't affect your actions

  697. So you're not contradicting yourself

  698. We make it out as if we're contradicting ourselves

  699. I'm a follower of Jesus

  700. I will do what Jesus wants me to do

  701. There I did it again

  702. I didn't do what Jesus wanted me to do

  703. You didn't contradict you

  704. You contradicted God

  705. God is the one who says this is my people

  706. And they will do as I command them

  707. And then you don't do as he commands you

  708. You're contradicting not the first declaration

  709. Where you say I will keep his statutes, his prescriptions

  710. I will keep his ordinances, his judgments

  711. I will keep his commandments, what he tells me to do

  712. But the second one where he says you will be my people

  713. And follow my commands

  714. So when you contradict God you become in opposition to him

  715. Wrath sets in

  716. You've picked a fight with the big guy

  717. You're saying you say this but it's not true

  718. And you're saying that to God

  719. It'd be one thing if we say about ourselves I am a certain thing

  720. And then we don't show up to be that thing

  721. Maybe we just failed

  722. Maybe we just made a mistake

  723. Maybe we just forgot

  724. But when you say what God says is not true

  725. That's another thing altogether

  726. That's contradicting God and you're opposing him

  727. And therefore he is opposing you

  728. And then we go on to 19

  729. And 19 kind of shows us the setup if you will

  730. One aspect of it

  731. 19 says and that he shall set you high

  732. Above all nations which he has made

  733. For praise, fame, and honor

  734. And that you shall be a consecrated people

  735. To the Lord your God as he has spoken

  736. So again this is something that God has said he will do

  737. And now it says he will do it

  738. So as if we took the ladder and put the bear up high

  739. And then we'll put the ladder away and nobody can touch it

  740. God would set up his people

  741. For what purpose?

  742. For this purpose

  743. Praise, fame, and honor

  744. And so when you stand up for the Lord

  745. And do what the Lord would have you to do

  746. Taking based on the first two declarations

  747. God will set you up for praise

  748. That means he recognizes how good you are

  749. And you recognize how good he is

  750. There's praise flowing both directions

  751. Others will praise you

  752. And then you can redirect that praise toward him

  753. Which is the hope

  754. Fame you will be recognized

  755. This word here in the Hebrew means

  756. To be held in high esteem by anybody who knows you

  757. So now you ask yourself

  758. As I live for the Lord

  759. As I function as a person of integrity

  760. Are my family and friends able to esteem me well?

  761. Do they look at me and go

  762. Okay, yeah, he's stepping up

  763. She's stepping up

  764. She's doing what she's supposed to do

  765. Now it doesn't mean that they see God in you

  766. Because a lot of people in the world think

  767. That other people in the world do well too

  768. They do right things

  769. But if they look at you and they see

  770. Yeah, man, she's got character

  771. She's really stepping up

  772. I esteem her well

  773. Then you can say pay attention to the Lord

  774. This is not about me

  775. I don't do this because of who I am

  776. I do it because of who God is

  777. So God sets you up then for praise

  778. For fame and then for honor

  779. Now we know it's ultimate honor

  780. And that we'll be in heaven one day for eternity

  781. But it's also honor on earth, right?

  782. When the father runs down off the porch

  783. And throws himself on the returning prodigal son

  784. Kisses him on the neck and says

  785. Oh, my son who was dead but now is alive

  786. And he says kill the fattened calf

  787. And he puts a ring on his finger

  788. And a robe on his back

  789. And shoes on his feet

  790. He is honoring him in every possible way

  791. Provision, power, purpose, protection

  792. He's honoring him in every possible way

  793. And God will honor you

  794. And he sets you up for that

  795. You don't do that

  796. See it's he shall set you high above all nations

  797. Which he has made for praise, fame, and honor

  798. That's the setup that we want

  799. Okay, so in this text

  800. In these verses which we've already read

  801. We've seen that as a people of God

  802. And having declared ourselves as a people of God

  803. We are to follow his commandments, his ordinances

  804. His statutes, and his ways

  805. And to listen to his voice

  806. And that God then declared us as his people

  807. A treasured possession

  808. He promised us that we would keep his commandments

  809. And then we see that in light of that two declarations

  810. He will set us up

  811. But we have a problem, don't we?

  812. You with me, Jace?

  813. Okay, stand firm

  814. All right, we have a problem

  815. So first of all, let's talk about the first declaration

  816. So when I was not a Christian, 25 years old

  817. I was searching, questioning, skeptical

  818. I wasn't talking much to anybody about it

  819. But I was reading, I was searching the internet

  820. Such as it was at that time

  821. It wasn't as good as it is now, but it was there

  822. I was looking, trying to figure out

  823. What was wrong with this Christianity thing

  824. What was it that I was seeing in these people

  825. Because they were clearly different

  826. But also they were sort of the same as the world

  827. You know, they're kind of like

  828. There was problems, so they weren't quite right

  829. But at the same time, they were proclaiming God

  830. And they were better than most

  831. And I was trying to figure it out

  832. And the pastor would preach, and he said

  833. Jesus died on the cross

  834. And I said, well, what if Jesus didn't die on the cross?

  835. They saw him again later, three days later

  836. So I'm alive and thought he died on the cross

  837. But what if he didn't really die?

  838. And so I researched it, and I tried to figure out

  839. How do they know that he was dead?

  840. And there is factual evidence and proof

  841. That we know that he was dead

  842. There were witnesses by the hundreds who were there

  843. Saw the Roman centurion run a spear into his heart

  844. People do not survive having a spear run into their heart, right?

  845. You can't just give them a drug and they fall asleep

  846. Like they do in some sci-fi novels and stuff

  847. And wake up a few days later

  848. He got a spear run in his heart, right?

  849. That Roman centurion would have sacrificed his life

  850. If Jesus didn't die

  851. They were experts in knowing when someone was dead

  852. And it goes on and on

  853. So Jesus really died

  854. But it took me questioning it to get to that

  855. And I know that there are people, young Christians and non-Christians

  856. Who question all that

  857. I was like that

  858. I was not ready to make a declaration

  859. Because I didn't think there was anything to make a declaration to

  860. But then once I got to a point where I understood

  861. That what they were saying was true

  862. I realized it demands a declaration

  863. What are you going to do about it?

  864. Take it plain for a moment and just say this

  865. You realize that if you eat too many sweets

  866. Repeat repeatedly

  867. Continue to eat too many sweets

  868. Your body will grow in size in ways that are not helpful to you

  869. And ultimately your heart will struggle in your chest

  870. Your lungs will struggle to function

  871. Your liver will struggle to process

  872. Your kidneys will struggle to process

  873. And if you continue that for decades you will die

  874. So what are you going to do about it?

  875. Let's see, so I'm going to eat sweets in moderation

  876. So the sweets don't kill me, right?

  877. If you drive your car down the road

  878. 100 mile an hour on the expressway

  879. And then crawl in the back seat

  880. So no one's driving the car

  881. You will have maybe a minute or two to live at most

  882. However long it takes for that car to impact and then you'll be dead

  883. So what are you going to do about it?

  884. Well, I'm not going to do that, right?

  885. I'm going to drive my car

  886. I'm not going to drive it 100 mile an hour on the expressway

  887. Unless I absolutely have to for an emergency situation

  888. If I do, I'm going to pay very close attention

  889. And make sure I'm not going to leave the wheel, right?

  890. So when something is detrimental to you

  891. Or something is extremely beneficial to you, Jason

  892. You decide, Jason, to do that thing, right?

  893. So when the preaching of God is beneficial to you

  894. This is beneficial to you

  895. So you have to discipline yourself

  896. You have to try hard to get it

  897. You have to go, this is for me, I want to understand it

  898. What is he talking about?

  899. It's a natural...

  900. If you believe, you will take the steps according to what you believe

  901. But what we have in the world is a people, a lot of people

  902. Is a lot of people

  903. He's with you, he's on your side

  904. So there's a lot of people that will say they believe something

  905. And it completely doesn't affect what they believe

  906. Doesn't affect them at all, right?

  907. For example, most people will say that telling the truth is the right thing to do

  908. But most lost people will lie under the right circumstances

  909. In fact, I've had this conversation a number of times with people

  910. If they put a gun to my head

  911. And they told me I have to renounce Jesus in order to survive

  912. I'm just going to lie

  913. Because grace covers it anyway

  914. And a lot of Christians think, well if I get in that case, I'll just lie

  915. I'll tell them whatever they want to hear, not to take my life

  916. Because Jesus is going to take care of it anyway

  917. And yet, that's not the declaration

  918. That's not what the word calls us to

  919. If you believe in Jesus and you believe that you will have life after death

  920. Then you would be willing in that moment

  921. And I believe that Jesus would give you the courage

  922. To stand up and potentially die

  923. And in dying, be ushered into eternal life

  924. Do you believe?

  925. And if you believe, there comes a declaration

  926. And in a moment we'll talk about what happens if

  927. Either A, you believe and the declaration never comes

  928. Or B, the declaration happens and then afterwards you act like you don't believe

  929. In the world, much of the world is at the crux of the first declaration

  930. Do you believe?

  931. That's the question

  932. And once you believe and declare that you believe

  933. It opens a channel of faith to God and according to scripture by grace are you saved

  934. You cannot save yourself

  935. You cannot make the second declaration true

  936. You can say the first declaration and mean it

  937. And make it true to the best of your ability

  938. And that's where we're sitting at for most people in the world

  939. The second declaration is also problematic

  940. Because it is God's declaration as I said

  941. And it occurs to me that many Christians contradict God

  942. God says

  943. He declares us to be his people

  944. And we say yes, I am God's people

  945. I want to be God's people

  946. I want to go to heaven

  947. I want to live for the Lord

  948. I want to be forgiven of my sins

  949. I want to confess my sins

  950. Be cleansed of all unrighteousness

  951. Like 1 John 1, 9 says

  952. Yes, I want to be God's treasured possession

  953. I want to be the sheep that wandered in the wilderness for a while

  954. And God left the 99 in the field

  955. And came and found me and brought me in

  956. Jason, don't you want to be saved?

  957. Don't you want to be God's treasured possession?

  958. I want that

  959. But there's no way to bring God to the point of doing that

  960. I can't force it

  961. I can't talk him into it

  962. I can't bribe him

  963. I can't lie to him

  964. He sees the darkness that's in my heart

  965. He sees the things that I do

  966. There is nothing that I can do to cause that to happen

  967. It's two separate declarations

  968. Do you understand that you can say

  969. I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ

  970. I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and I will live for Him

  971. I will follow His prescriptions

  972. I will follow His commands

  973. I will walk in His ways and do the things that God wants me to do

  974. And yet, not be saved

  975. No, wait a minute

  976. That's everything that a person needs to do to be saved

  977. I believe in God

  978. I believe in living the way God wants me to live

  979. Walking in His ways

  980. Unless you walk in one particular way

  981. You will not be saved

  982. And what is that one particular way?

  983. Jason, what's that one particular way that a person has to walk in in order to be saved?

  984. Anybody?

  985. Close

  986. Narrow in scope, right?

  987. One particular way that people have to walk in in order to be saved

  988. Don't make it harder than it is

  989. It's a Sunday school answer

  990. Jesus

  991. I am the way and the truth and the life

  992. No man cometh unto the Father but by me

  993. Only one trail leads where you want to go

  994. And it is through Jesus

  995. So you can say

  996. I believe in God

  997. And I will follow His prescriptions for my life

  998. And I will follow His statutes

  999. And I will follow His commands

1000. And I will follow His ways

1001. And yet, if you do not follow that one particular way

  1002. You cannot be saved

1003. Do you think that every Jewish person devout or otherwise is on the face of the planet and is going to go to heaven someday?

1004. That's not what the Bible says

1005. And even being in this room

1006. Being in the right place at the right time to hear the teaching, the preaching

  1007. Preaching yourself

1008. I could be standing up here trained to break down the word and preach it to you

  1009. Man, he's so good

  1010. His points are clear

  1011. I can understand him

  1012. His illustrations are awesome

1013. It brings it home, whatever

  1014. And bless you

1015. And I could go to hell when I die

1016. You must come through Jesus

1017. That is the only way

1018. And that right there where it says

1019. I will follow His ways

  1020. Includes clearly Jesus

1021. So the declaration of God is contingent

1022. Not on your personal declaration

1023. But on your willingness to follow God's ways

1024. In particular one way, which is Jesus

1025. And so is it not possible?

1026. Don't you think it's possible that we have a whole bunch of people in the world who are declaring themselves?

  1027. Declaration number one

1028. I believe in God and I'm doing what God wants me to do

  1029. Just follow me

1030. I very recently heard a man say

1031. God told me to say this

1032. God is speaking to me

1033. He told me to say this

1034. And then he said it

1035. And I was like God may have told you to say that

1036. But he didn't tell you to say it that way

  1037. There is no way

1038. That's just not how God works

1039. And yet he was adamant

  1040. And people believed him

1041. That God was telling him to say it

1042. And apparently to say it that way

1043. Your declaration one will only precipitate God's declaration two

1044. If it's done in Jesus

1045. Then we come to the setup

  1046. Here's the thing

  1047. You've got to choose

1048. There are essentially three setups that came to mind as I was preparing this sermon

1049. The first one is the best one

1050. It's where we are saved in Jesus Christ and set up and taken care of

1051. And you can read about it in a whole bunch of places in the Bible

1052. But I'm going to read about it today in 1 Corinthians chapter 3

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

1053. And you can go there and read it in your Bibles if you want

  1054. 1 Corinthians chapter 3 beginning in verse 10

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1055. 1 Corinthians chapter 3

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

1056. After we look at these setups we're on the conclusion already

  1057. 1 Corinthians chapter 3 beginning in verse 10

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1058. It says

1059. According to the grace of God which was given to me as a wise master builder

1060. I laid a foundation and another is building upon it

1061. But let each man be careful how he builds upon it

1062. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid

1063. Which is, there it is, Jesus Christ

1064. Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw

1065. Each man's work will become evident

1066. For the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire

1067. And the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work

1068. If any man's work which he has built upon it remains he shall receive a reward

1069. If any man's work is burned up he shall suffer loss

1070. But he himself shall be saved yet as through fire

1071. Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

1072. If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him

1073. But the temple of God is holy and that is what you are

1074. Let no man deceive himself

1075. If any man among you thinks he is wise in this age

1076. Let him become foolish that he may become wise

1077. For the wisdom of the world is foolishness before God

1078. For it is written he is the one who catches the wise in their craft

1079. And the Lord knows the reasonings of the wise that they are useless

1080. So then let no one boast in men for all things belong to you

1081. Whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death

1082. Or things present or things to come

1083. All things belong to you and you belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God

1084. That's the set up that you want

1085. The foundation is Jesus Christ and the goal then is to live building on that foundation

1086. I was reading in the suburban press yesterday and it had all these dates about when things were started

1087. And it talked about when the cornerstone was first set for Waite High School

1088. To build Waite High School

1089. And the date and the year when it was first set

1090. And where that cornerstone was set

1091. Everything else in that building was going to line up with that cornerstone

1092. Jesus is our foundation and you have to ask yourself

1093. And it's hard, I get this, okay

1094. Because there are a lot of good things in the world and all these things are given to us to enjoy

1095. But here's the deal, Curtis, give you an example

1096. Whatever you watch, whatever you play, etc.

1097. If you're believing in God and trusting in the Lord for what comes after

1098. Has to line up with that initial cornerstone

1099. And it's hard to do that yourself, isn't it?

1100. Easier if you know the prescriptions

  1101. So something comes along

1102. Oh, wait, this is in the prescriptions

1103. I know what to do if this happens

1104. RJ, what do you do if you get a headache?

1105. Okay, starts by drinking water

  1106. Take medicine

1107. Okay, starts by drinking water, takes medicine

1108. Next week, if RJ gets a headache, he's going to start by hydrating

1109. And if that doesn't work, he's going to take medicine for it so he can get past his headache

1110. Because he has the prescription

1111. So what do you do to make sure that all the things of this life that you choose to do

1112. Line up with the cornerstone, the foundation that God has laid in Jesus Christ?

1113. You ask yourself, what is God's prescription?

1114. So what is God's prescription with regard to media?

  1115. Focus on the pure

1116. What is God's prescription with regards to telling the truth?

  1117. Always tell the truth

1118. Let all deceit and lies of any kind pass away from you

  1119. And it goes on

  1120. Those are prescriptions

1121. They're also commands, but they're prescriptions for a certain case

1122. So we learn the prescriptions, the ordinances, God's judgment

1123. So what happens if I do get to that point where God puts a gun to my head

1124. And he's going to pull the trigger if I don't renounce Jesus

1125. And I renounce Jesus, what might happen?

1126. You know that the Bible talks about that?

1127. It says exactly, there's an ordinance, a ruling of God for what to do

1128. I'll show it to you in the conclusion

1129. Bottom line is, setup number one, the one that we want is this setup

1130. It's where Jesus is our foundation

1131. And everything else in our life must come in line

1132. Or actually not be part of this building that God is building

1133. And we say, I can't have that, it's not in me

1134. Because it doesn't line up with the foundation

1135. The problem is, there are at least two other setups that people choose from

1136. The first one you can see clearly in Isaiah chapter 1

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

1137. So if you're following along in your Bibles, go to Isaiah chapter 1

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

1138. He's one of the bigger prophets in the back of the Old Testament

1139. So you can kind of thumb through and find Isaiah no problem

  1140. Isaiah chapter 1

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

1141. And I'm just going to read 27 through 31

1142. But understand that Isaiah was recognizing that amongst God's people

1143. There were those who were making their declaration

1144. And God was making a declaration about them

  1145. Which is a two-part declaration

1146. It says, they will be my people and also they will follow my commands

1147. But they were breaking the second half and calling God a liar

1148. They were in opposition to God

1149. That's the day in which he lived

1150. And then he wrote this

1151. Zion will be redeemed with justice

1152. And her repentant ones, that means the people of them that turn back to God

1153. Will be redeemed with righteousness

1154. But transgressors, those who cross the line

1155. And sinners, those who live not in a way that God would want them to

  1156. Will be crushed together

1157. And those who forsake the Lord

1158. In other words, if they put him off

1159. Shall come to an end

1160. Surely you will be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired

1161. They went after oaks for them

1162. Would be like TV or sweets or nice houses or nice cars for us, right?

1163. Surely you will be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired

1164. And you will be embarrassed at the gardens which you have chosen

1165. For you will be like an oak whose leaf fades away

1166. Or as a garden that has no water

1167. And the strong man will become tinder

1168. His work also a spark

1169. Get this, we got some strong people in the room

1170. RJ is strong, Josh is strong

1171. Jason is strong, Tommy is strong, Aaron is strong

1172. We got a lot of strong people in the room

1173. I think Curtis is pretty strong

1174. I've never put him fully to the test

  1175. But I think he's pretty strong

  1176. I'm getting stronger, right?

1177. We have some strong people

1178. This says that a strong man will become tinder

1179. If you do it in your own strength

1180. You know what tinder is, right?

1181. Tinder is the stuff you use to start a fire

1182. It's the little bits of stuff that burns real easy

1183. So we strong men will become tinder

1184. If we don't do it God's way

1185. And then it says his work also a spark

1186. So we're the tinder and what we do then in our strength

1187. Becomes the spark and with a tinder and a spark

  1188. You've got a fire, okay?

1189. Thus they shall both burn together

1190. The man and his work

  1191. Catch that?

  1192. Will burn together

1193. And there will be none to quench them

1194. Isaiah is saying that there is another way

  1195. What is the way?

1196. What is the set up here?

1197. The set up is it's a people that declare

  1198. I believe in God

1199. I will follow the statutes, the commands, the ordinances and the ways

1200. But then when it comes down to it

  1201. They're not doing it

1202. They transgress or they are in sin

  1203. Their work becomes tinder

1204. I'm sorry, their strength becomes tinder

1205. And their work becomes a spark

  1206. And now they're burning

1207. And they are sad and embarrassed at that which they pursued

1208. In the day that they realize what they've done

1209. They will be sad and embarrassed

1210. It's the thing that they thought was great

1211. That they were so about

  1212. I really want a better job

1213. I really want more pay

1214. Listen, you got all the better jobs

1215. And all the more pay and all the better house

1216. And all the better health

  1217. You could be healed

1218. And you could live to be 120

1219. And by the time your 121st birthday comes

1220. You're going to be embarrassed about all the things you pursued

1221. Unless you build your life in Jesus Christ and live for an eternity with God

1222. We think, oh life is so long

1223. 120 years God will tarry with a man

1224. That seems like such a long time

1225. So if I eat right, exercise, drink all the right water, sleep right

  1226. Do all those things

  1227. Manage my money right

1228. If I honor my parents

1229. I do all those things

1230. I might live to be 120 years old

1231. And on my 121st birthday I will rue everything I ever did

1232. That wasn't building my life on Jesus Christ

1233. If I do it as somebody who builds with perishable materials

1234. And I truly am saved

1235. But I'm hit or miss, hit or miss all the time

1236. Then I'll still burn with the stuff

1237. But ultimately I'll still make it in

1238. Right, so I'll be burned, I'll be smoking

1239. As the things that I treasure

1240. The things that I desired are burnt off of me

1241. But I'll still go into heaven

1242. Because I truly am a follower of Jesus

1243. But if I am not truly a follower through Jesus

  1244. And following the Lord

1245. Then I won't go in at all

1246. And I will rue all the things that I thought were awesome in this life

1247. All the things that I wanted

1248. Right, so that's the setup

1249. I suggest to you that who's setting that up

1250. Right, so if God is setting it up

  1251. 1 Corinthians 3, 10 through 23

1252. If God is setting it up like that

1253. The foundation is Jesus Christ

1254. And we're going to build on the foundation

1255. Who's setting this one up?

  1256. The Isaiah 1 setup

  1257. That's humans, that's people

1258. It's self, they look after the oaks that they want

1259. They look after the gardens that they want

1260. Choked out by the cares and riches of this world

1261. Maybe they never become saved because they're too busy with the things of this life

1262. Or they become saved and they struggle too much with the things of this life

1263. And if they are saved and struggle with the things of this life

1264. Then when they stand before Jesus

1265. He'll burn that stuff off so they can enter in for an eternity

1266. But if they are never saved, they'll burn with it for an eternity

1267. It's not my word, it's his word

1268. And people are setting themselves up

1269. By pursuing the good things of this life

1270. That are entertaining, that taste good, that are enjoyable

  1271. Right?

1272. Alright, we've got one more, last one

1273. And then we go to the conclusion

1274. So this one is found very clearly in several places

1275. But we'll read about it in John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

  1276. John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

1277. And the blessings of this is we get it straight from the mouth of Jesus

1278. As he's talking in John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

  1279. Okay?

  1280. John 8

  1281. And I'll read beginning in 39

  1282. John chapter 8 beginning in 39

    John 8 chapter mention

  1283. Jesus is speaking

1284. I speak the things which I have seen

  1285. This is 38

1286. I speak the things which I have seen with my father

1287. Therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father

1288. They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father

1289. Jesus said to them, if you are Abraham's children

1290. Do the deeds of Abraham

1291. By the way, what were the deeds of Abraham?

  1292. Anybody know?

1293. The deeds of Abraham would go on the same nation

1294. Yep, that's what he would do

1295. That's what would, and really would be done through him

1296. So the main deed of Abraham was faith

1297. God saw his faith, that's when he was willing to sacrifice his son

1298. He saw his faith and counted it to him for righteousness

1299. So he built his foundation in faith in the way that God was going to make

1300. That he didn't even know it was Jesus yet

1301. But he trusted the foundation, which was God

1302. But it also says that he walked upright before the Lord

1303. In that faith, it says he followed all the commands of the Lord

  1304. Alright?

1305. And so what they should be doing is following the commands and the ways

1306. And the statutes and the ordinances of God

1307. But Jesus says that's not what they're doing

1308. They're following something heard from their father

1309. I submit to you, they have another father

1310. Someone else is setting them up

  1311. You follow?

1312. They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father

1313. And Jesus said to them, if you are Abraham's children

1314. Do the deeds of Abraham

1315. But as it is, you are seeking to kill me

1316. A man has told you the truth

1317. Which I heard from God

1318. This Abraham did not do

1319. You are doing the deeds of your father

1320. They said to him, we were not born of fornication

1321. We have one father, even God

1322. Jesus said to them, if God were your father

  1323. You would love me

1324. For I proceed forth and have come from God

1325. For I have not even come on my own initiative

  1326. But he sent me

1327. Why do you not understand what I am saying?

1328. It is because you cannot hear my word

1329. You are of your father the devil

1330. And you want to do the desires of your father

1331. He was a murderer from the beginning

1332. And does not stand in the truth

1333. Because there is no truth in him

1334. Whenever he speaks a lie

1335. He speaks from his own nature

1336. For he is a liar and the father of lies

1337. But because I speak the truth

1338. You do not believe me

1339. And we will stop there

  1340. The bottom line is

1341. There is a third set up

1342. And it is a set up by whom?

  1343. Or by who?

1344. Who is setting up the third set up?

  1345. Say it again

  1346. Satan

  1347. Right

1348. So there are three setups

1349. You can pick and choose from

1350. And one of them is God's set up

1351. And one of them is Satan's set up

1352. And one of them is the set up of people

  1353. Or the world

1354. So anybody who has not been saved

1355. Is probably going to choose

1356. They are going to start with the set up of the world

1357. But then when they know there is a contradiction

1358. Or a conflict between God and Satan

  1359. They may choose Satan

  1360. They may choose God

1361. And if you choose the set up of the world

1362. And do not choose God or Satan

  1363. You have actually chosen

1364. Eternal death over eternal life

1365. There is only one way to get eternal life

  1366. It is through Jesus

  1367. We covered that

1368. So that brings us to the conclusion

1369. I just want to recap for one second

  1370. There are two declarations

1371. There is one declaration that says

  1372. I am a follower of God

1373. I believe in the Lord

1374. I will live for the Lord

  1375. Follow His statutes

  1376. His ordinances

  1377. His commands

  1378. And His ways

1379. And ultimately that will lead you to following the way

  1380. Which is Jesus Christ

1381. And then your life is built on that

1382. And you come into eternity with God

1383. That is the one you want

1384. But there is also a declaration

1385. That is of the world

1386. The world wants the trees

1387. The world wants the garden

1388. The world wants a job

1389. The world wants a paycheck

1390. The world wants a relationship

1391. The world wants a better house

1392. The world wants more help

1393. The world is waiting for its ship to come in

1394. And so busy focused on the docks

1395. That it is missing the declaration

1396. That would set it up for eternity

  1397. Which is in God

1398. And then there is a third declaration

1399. Which is a very persuasive declaration

1400. Remember these are Jewish people

1401. He was talking to men who fast two days a week

1402. Memorize whole books of the Bible

  1403. Baptize people

  1404. Teach about God

1405. That is who he was talking to

1406. And he said to them that Satan was their father

  1407. You follow?

1408. It is a very persuasive, very tricky

1409. Right in the middle of your life

1410. Set up that you do not want

1411. So choose, I would say simply put

1412. You want to choose the set up of God

1413. Which brings us to the conclusions

  1414. Sorting the set ups

1415. In your life you are going to have to make a decision

1416. I liken it to this

1417. There are two men who live side by side

1418. One guy kept letting his dog run on the other guy's property

1419. And pooping on his grass

  1420. Casing his cat

1421. And so finally the guy whose cat was getting cased

1422. And his property was getting pooped on

1423. Said I am going to build a fence

1424. I am going to put up a privacy fence

1425. And that will keep his dog up

1426. He calls the dog warden

1427. But every time he calls the dog warden comes

1428. The dog is on his back or blah blah blah

1429. And he says well I am going to build a fence

1430. Between my property and his property

1431. So he goes out and buys the lumber

1432. Gives the post hole digger some cement

  1433. Goes every eight feet

1434. Put the hole in the ground

1435. Put the post in the ground

1436. Put some cement around it

1437. There is water that soaks into the cement

  1438. It becomes solid rock

1439. Turns all the way down

1440. Turns the corner all the way back up to his house

1441. And his whole backyard is fenced in

1442. But the guy with the dog says

1443. Hey we had a problem

1444. What are you talking about we got a problem

1445. He said you built that fence

  1446. On my property

1447. I know you built it to keep out my dog

1448. And we have had some trouble with that

1449. But the bottom line is that line of fence

1450. Between my property and your property

  1451. That line of fence

  1452. Is on my property

  1453. It belongs to me

1454. Because you built it on my property

1455. And the court sides with the person who says

1456. You built a fence on their property and it is their fence

1457. And he says and by the way

  1458. I don't want a fence

1459. If I wanted a fence I would have put a fence up

1460. So I am going to take the fence down

  1461. The guy is like

1462. The guy takes the fence down

  1463. A few days later

1464. His dog is chasing his cat again

1465. Poops appearing in his backyard again

  1466. He goes out

  1467. He buys cement

1468. He already got a post hole digger

1469. He buys some posts and he buys a fence

1470. And he puts the fence up

  1471. Guess where

  1472. On his own property

1473. And now the fence cannot be taken down

1474. Turn your Bibles to Revelation chapter 21

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

1475. If you are following along

  1476. Revelation 21

1477. I am going to read beginning in verse 6

1478. This is a vision if you will

1479. Of the coming of the new heavens

  1480. And the new earth

1481. And God has taken care of all of it

1482. It says in verse 6

1483. And he said to me

  1484. It is done

1485. I am the Alpha and the Omega

1486. The beginning and the end

1487. I will give to the one who is the first

  1488. And the second

1489. And the second and the third

  1490. And the fourth

  1491. And the fifth

  1492. And the sixth

1493. And let me have a look at the end

1494. I will give to the one who thirsts

1495. From the spring of the water of life

  1496. Without cost

  1497. So God says

1498. I will give to the one who thirsts

1499. Once you recognize you have a need

1500. Jason have you recognized you have a need

1501. I will give from the spring of the water of life without cost.

  1502. It's already paid for. It's free.

1503. Remember, your declaration is good.

1504. There are going to be a lot of people in the world who have said,

1505. I'm moving for God and get there and they don't get to go to heaven.

1506. Because they didn't do it through Jesus.

1507. Jesus himself said, Matthew 7,

1508. There will be many who say unto me, Lord, Lord, but do not enter the kingdom of heaven.

1509. Jesus said while he was preaching on the earth, okay,

1510. It's free. You just have to recognize that you have a thirst, that you have a need and go to God for it.

1511. And he says, I will give of the water of life without cost.

1512. Continuing in verse 7, he says,

1513. Then he who overcomes shall inherit these things,

1514. And I will be his God, and he will be my son.

1515. So God will let you drink of the water of life.

1516. It's free, and then you just have to overcome.

1517. So the foundation is laid. Get it?

1518. Jesus is the foundation. The foundation is laid.

1519. And now you build throughout the struggles of your life, throughout the difficulty, etc., etc.

1520. You build on that foundation.

1521. And the one who overcomes, so in other words, right now all you got to do is all you got to do.

1522. And people say this all the time, and I think people then say they do it,

1523. But they don't really do it in many cases.

1524. You just have to say to God, OK, God, I recognize I have a thirst.

1525. There is something in me.

1526. One of the guys at Camp You Can said, I tried it all.

1527. In fact, it was J.C. He said, I tried it all.

1528. He said, I did drugs, I did party scene, I had people cheering me,

1529. Shouts and praises and music, bar scene.

1530. He said, at one point in time, I had a million dollars in cash in my closet.

1531. And he wasn't being figurative. He's literal.

1532. He literally had a million dollars of cash stacked in his closet.

1533. And he said, and I realized I was empty.

  1534. I needed something.

1535. And whatever it was, everything that I had tried, and he had taken everything from anybody in his life.

1536. He said he was so big and so bad and so strong and so scary that anything he asked for, people give it to him.

1537. He could take anything he wanted. No girl turned him down.

1538. Somebody got a hundred bucks in their pocket, he asked for it.

1539. They gave it to him, because if he wanted, he could just take it.

1540. He killed so many people, beat so many people.

1541. No one would turn him down. He could have anything he wanted, anytime he wanted.

1542. And he realized he couldn't have the one thing he needed.

1543. He recognized a thirst in himself.

1544. Once you've recognized that thirst in yourself, God is willing to give you the water of life without cost.

1545. And then He expects you to overcome in this life, to stick with Him,

1546. to stand by His commands, His statutes, His ordinances, and His ways, and do it God's way.

1547. And if you do that, you shall then inherit all thing, and you will be a child to God forever.

1548. But listen, verse 8, and this is scary.

  1549. But for the cowardly.

1550. Do you know what a coward is?

1551. A coward is a person who doesn't act in courage to do the right thing.

1552. They're the kind of person who will say something bad about you, but not to your face.

1553. They're the kind of person who will say, I believe in Jesus, and I'm living for Him no matter what.

1554. But when a gun is to their head, they'll renounce His name.

1555. He says, but for the cowardly and the unbelieving.

1556. Unbelieving is the kind of people who do not trust God, they do not believe God,

1557. they do not believe God can do what God says He's going to do.

1558. And for the abominable, and for the murderers, and immoral persons, and sorcerers.

1559. Sorcerers are the kind of people who think that if they say the right thing, God will do what they want Him to do.

1560. Or they can twist somebody else to get them to do what they want if they just do the right thing in this life.

1561. Idolaters, that's someone who worships anything else.

1562. If there is anything that comes remotely close to the value of God in your life.

1563. It's not that you can say, well I can't have other gods before Him like greater than Him.

1564. It's you can't have any other gods in His presence.

1565. So if you're busy looking for a way to be entertained when you ought to be looking for a way to be grown in the Lord,

1566. you've got to ask yourself, are you an idolater?

1567. And it says, but for the cowardly, and the unbelieving, and the abominable, and the murderers, and the immoral persons,

1568. and the sorcerers, and the idolaters, and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone,

1569. which is the second death.

1570. Notice that verse 8 starts with a but.

1571. The drink is given freely for those who recognize the thirst.

1572. And those who recognize the thirst and receive the drink that overcome shall inherit these things,

1573. and become a child of God for eternity.

1574. But for the cowardly, whether or not they are given the drink, the cowardly, the unbeliever, the abominable,

1575. the murderers, the immoral persons, the sorcerers, the idolaters, the liars, their part will be in the lake of fire.

1576. God wants to set you up.

1577. By His grace, He is willing to give you a drink from the spring of life,

1578. which He paid for with His very own blood through His Son Jesus Christ.

1579. By His grace, as a free gift, you cannot earn it.

1580. It's not about what you say.

1581. A lot of times we want people to say, yeah, I believe.

1582. And you should. That's your part. That's your declaration.

1583. But somebody saying, yeah, I believe when they don't is worse than somebody who doesn't say, yeah, I believe.

1584. Either way, they still wind up in hell, unless they at some point truly do believe.

1585. But it's worse to say, I believe when you don't, because then you paint a picture that God is a liar.

1586. Paint a picture that God's declaration is false, and God's declaration is not false.

1587. And it says, we were once objects of wrath, Ephesians 2.

1588. But by grace, you have been saved through faith, through believing.

1589. You let Jesus' death stand for you.

1590. He became your Lord, and now you walk in His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His ways,

1591. and follow His voice, and you overcome, and you get eternity in heaven with God.

  1592. And it's amazing.

1593. In fact, a little earlier in that chapter is a brief description.

  1594. He says,

1595. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men,

1596. and He shall dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be among them,

1597. and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there shall no longer be any death,

1598. there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain.

1599. The first things have passed away.

1600. And He who sits on the throne said, Behold, I am making all things new.

1601. Eternity with God is the exact thing.

1602. But I ask you, when you're choosing your setups,

1603. let's say if you were the enemy, and you wanted to have a good chance

1604. that somebody would choose either Satan's setup or man's setup and not choose God's setup,

  1605. what would you do?

1606. How would you hide it?

1607. Where would you put it?

1608. Would you put it up high where somebody couldn't reach it?

1609. Well, that doesn't work, because God can easily make somebody be able to reach it

1610. by providing a ladder, by providing a boost, whatever.

1611. And all you have to do is see it and know that you need it,

1612. thirst for it a little bit, and God will give it readily, freely.

1613. So what would you do?

1614. If you were Satan and you were trying to hide this setup of God, what would you do?

1615. I submit to you, just put it in plain view.

1616. Put it right there, so simple, so easy, not confusing,

1617. and then distract people from looking at it.

1618. Distract them with oak trees and gardens, sports cars, and cute girls and cute guys,

1619. drugs, and whatever else you can.

1620. For that thing that is right there in front of them that God has made open and evident to everyone

1621. will not be chosen by those who think they want something else.

1622. I got back from Camp You Can, and I was a little put out for a few minutes,

1623. because for one, one of the boys left with their parents before I knew it.

1624. I can just see their parents or say anything, and I'm like,

1625. Holy cow, where is he?

1626. I'm like, where is he?

1627. And no one that was still there could remember seeing him after the rest area,

1628. and so for a hot minute I thought, oh no, did we leave him at the rest area?

1629. And then I called RJ, and I said, did you see him back at the building?

1630. I was like, no, I didn't see him, but Jason was in the car with RJ,

1631. and Jason said, oh yeah, he rode with me from the rest area back to the church building,

1632. and so then we knew everything was fine.

1633. Well, at the same time, and that's how easy it is, he was right there in plain view,

1634. but I didn't see him, and so I began to wonder.

1635. But at the same time, there was another boy who couldn't find his bag in the car.

1636. His bag, he's looking for his bag.

1637. He looked at the entire van for his bag, and he couldn't find it.

1638. And his brother began to look for his bag.

1639. Now everybody's looking for the bag.

1640. We're all looking for the bag.

1641. Nobody's got the bag, so I told RJ on the phone, I said,

1642. RJ, I'm pretty sure you took the bag, because you took the other vehicle with the rest of the bags.

1643. He said, no, I made sure I only had the bags of the people that are with me.

  1644. He said, I don't have anybody else's bags, and I said,

1645. well, they're all looking at the van.

1646. We're all looking at the van.

  1647. I don't see it.

1648. They don't see it, and he kept saying, it's my blue bag.

  1649. It's my blue bag.

1650. He thought it was a gray bag, but it was blue.

1651. He kept saying, it's my gray bag.

  1652. It's my gray bag.

1653. Finally, they found the bag, and it wasn't gray.

1654. His bag that he used all week long at Camp You Can, that he packed, that he carried, his bag,

1655. he thought it was gray, and it was blue.

1656. And somebody else, which happened to be his brother, had to say, listen, that's not gray.

1657. That's blue, and it's been blue all week long, and that's your bag.

1658. And he looked at it, that's my bag.

1659. Yep, that's right, it is blue.

1660. Where are you going to hide the setup that God has?

1661. You hide it in plain view.

1662. Tell people it looks a little different.

1663. Somebody in this room is going, but I'm not sure because I want this, this, and this.

1664. Somebody brought into a prosperity gospel.

1665. Listen, you can follow Jesus, and you may suffer.

1666. You can follow Jesus, and you could get, probably not in our day, but it could happen,

1667. especially if you became a missionary in a foreign country, you could get burned at the stake,

1668. or crucified, or get your fingernails pulled out.

1669. In the last week, somebody in the Arab community across the world has had their fingernails pulled out

1670. because that's the common treatment that they use on them to get them, to tell them who told them about Jesus.

  1671. That's what they do.

1672. They keep them awake all night long, deprive them, waterboard them, and pull their fingernails out

1673. until they tell them who told them about Jesus.

1674. And most of the time they don't, because they know they're going to die anyway.

1675. So what good does it do? They just suffer until they're dead.

1676. And then spend eternity in heaven with God.

1677. So it isn't always going to be peaches and cream.

1678. He said, I'll give you freely of the spring of life.

1679. And for him who overcomes, you stay the course.

1680. Follow the commands, follow the statues, follow the ordinances, and follow his ways,

1681. and stick with Jesus, and build on the foundation that Jesus has given.

  1682. Then there's eternity.

1683. The great blessing is God will strengthen you, he will provide for you, he will protect you,

1684. he will give you purpose, and he will give you power while you are doing that to overcome.

1685. Even if you get sick, even if you get hurt physically, emotionally, or psychologically,

1686. you can overcome and stick with him.

1687. It is not about getting rich.

1688. It is not about getting healthy.

1689. It is not about having prettier stuff.

1690. It is about building on the foundation of Jesus Christ, which is largely about your declaration.

1691. And we're right back to the beginning.

1692. They could have been listed in different order.

1693. The declaration of God happens first, now I'm saved, now I have the power, authority, etc.

1694. to make my own declaration and to keep it.

  1695. Will you?

1696. The question is, have you recognized a thirst in yourself? I thirst for God.

1697. I need something more than what this life has thus far provided me,

1698. and if so, then you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior,

1699. and he will give you a drink of the spring of life for free.

1700. If you can honestly sit here and say, I do not nor have I ever recognized a thirst within myself,

1701. and I can tell you flat out based on the scripture, you are not saved.

1702. You are not ready to be saved.

1703. But if you can say, I have recognized a thirst in myself, and I have reached out for God,

1704. and he has given me a drink, I have been filled up by the Lord,

1705. yes, I have troubles, but I am overcoming, then you are saved.

1706. And you're set up for this life and for the next.

1707. But let's not play games, shall we?

1708. Don't say to God, yeah, I'll be yours, but I'm still going to do what I want to do,

1709. unlike what you said, in contrast to what God said, I'm going to do what I want to do.

1710. No, we do as God would have us to do, and we stand firm,

1711. and God is still in the soul-saving business.

1712. And so we have to go out there and find those people and say,

1713. look, this is right here in front of you.

  1714. I know it's not complicated.

1715. You want a rich formula with 17 ingredients, but here it's as simple as this.

1716. Have you recognized a thirst in yourself, something that this world does not satisfy?

1717. I have. If you have, Jesus says, go to Him, and He'll give you a drink of the spring of life,

1718. and you will be made eternal. You'll be taken care of.

  1719. It's that simple.

1720. And then just live for Him for the rest of your life and overcome,

1721. and you'll sail on into the kingdom, regardless of any suffering you may have in the meantime.

1722. So why are we not? Why are we not?

1723. Everybody that we talk to, every opportunity that we get, ask that one question.

1724. Have you noticed a thirst in yourself that this world cannot satisfy?

1725. If they say no, you could stop right there.

1726. Or you could say, well, if you ever do, I can tell you what it is.

1727. And they may later that day or the next week or months down the road or years,

1728. and you may see them in heaven, they may attribute their salvation to you.

1729. Have you ever noticed a thirst in yourself that this world cannot satisfy?

  1730. Just go to Jesus.

1731. Jesus is at the well, John chapter 4, final illustration.

    John 4 chapter mention

  1732. The woman is there.

1733. She's had a bunch of men married multiple times,

1734. and the guy she's with right now is not her husband.

1735. She's a Samaritan, so a Jew shouldn't even be talking to her.

1736. Jesus sends the disciples on ahead to get food.

1737. And they say, well, don't you need food? We'll bring some back for you.

1738. And He said, I have food of which you know not.

1739. In other words, I don't need food right now because I'm being fed.

1740. And He said, His food is to do the will of His Father, and then you know what He did.

1741. He stayed there, and instead of eating, He told that woman how to be saved.

1742. He told her many things, all the things that she had done.

1743. And He said, if you knew who I was, you'd have asked of me,

1744. and I'd give you a drink, and you'd never thirst again.

1745. And she said, well, you don't even have a bucket. How are you going to draw water?

1746. Because she didn't understand what He was talking about.

1747. But now, you do, and I do, and I submit to you, we need to go find others who do.

1748. Thank you very much. This concludes our services.

1749. Go be there for, and be the church.
