  1. That's all right. Thank you. Do you have a seat,

  2. please? Thank you. Oh, no! It's Tuesday night.

  3. Whacked out simple stuff. We're going to talk

  4. very briefly about something important. A set

  5. of terms, if you will. We're going to talk about

  6. keys. I got this little cool little cable key

  7. thing for Christmas. It's got a whole bunch of

  8. keys on it. It's got keys to the light bulb.

  9. It's not hard to use anymore because we have

  10. a fingerprint over there. Keys to this building.

  11. Keys to the house. Keys to my lockbox. Keys to

  12. my safe deposit box. Keys, keys, keys. But not

  13. this kind of keys. We're going to talk about

  14. keys to the kingdom. Can anybody explain to me

  15. why the Bible says that the church has the keys

  16. to the kingdom? Give me a basic explanation.

  17. Go ahead. Because the church knows what God asks

  18. them to do in order to go to heaven and go towards

  19. heaven. I think that's a real good start. Okay.

  20. Do you know in the Bible where the idea of the

  21. keys to the kingdom come from? Anybody? Probably

  22. it's Jesus. Jesus, yeah. Jesus is speaking. Okay.

  23. So it's Matthew, Matthew 16, verse 19. Matthew

    Matthew 16:19 Matthew 16:19

  24. 16, verse 19. Okay, and I'm going to go to my

  25. Bible here. I was on the wrong page, but I'll

  26. get back to you in one second. And I'll read

  27. it to you. Matthew 16. There it is, 16. Where's

  28. my Bible? Where's my paper Bible at? Okay, here

  29. we go. We're going to do it the old -fashioned

  30. way. Yep, 19. This is the old gate. It's the

  31. second half of the old gate crash reverse, actually.

  32. Matthew 16, 19. And it says, this is Jesus speaking,

  33. and he says, he's talking to Peter, he's talking

  34. about the church, and how the church would be

  35. built upon a profession of faith in Jesus Christ

  36. as Lord and Savior. And he says, and I will give

  37. unto thee the kingdom, the keys of the kingdom

  38. of heaven. I will give unto thee the keys of

  39. the kingdom of heaven. And if it stopped right

  40. there, that'd be good enough, wouldn't it? We've

  41. got the keys to the kingdom of heaven. So you

  42. can get in, right? Wouldn't that be good? That

  43. would be good enough. But he goes on to explain

  44. that. He says, and whatsoever thou shalt bind

  45. on earth shall be bound in heaven. Or it shall

  46. have already been bound in heaven. And he agrees

  47. with what he says. So whatsoever thou shalt bind

  48. on earth shall be bound in heaven. And whatsoever

  49. thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in

  50. heaven. So what does it mean to bind something?

  51. Tie it up. Tie it up. That's right. Lock it up.

  52. Tie it up. Capture it. Right? So the animal,

  53. you put a leash on it. Say it again. Yeah. You

  54. wrap it up. Falling apart. Put it together. Keep

  55. it together. Right? And to loose something. What

  56. do you mean to loose something? Go ahead. Not

  57. to loose it like you can't find it. But to loose

  58. it like to let it loose. Right? Like you let

  59. your dog loose. Or you just left the door open

  60. for a little too long and the dog takes off,

  61. right? So that's loose. In fact, the dog getting

  62. out and running away is a really good example

  63. of that loose. Because you've got to go track

  64. it down and get it under control, right? And

  65. so, listen now, listen now. And so when we were

  66. given the keys to the kingdom of heaven, whatever

  67. we as the church... Based upon our profession

  68. of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of the community

  69. and being called out in the assembly of God,

  70. whatever we find on earth shall have already

  71. been found in heaven. So we're going to do what

  72. God wants us to do. And as Arianna says, we know

  73. how to get where we're going. And we know what

  74. kind of things will get us where we're going

  75. and what kind of things won't. We're not going

  76. to have anything to do with the kind of things

  77. that won't get us where we're going. We are going

  78. to have a lot to do with the kind of things that

  79. will get us where we're going. God knows what

  80. those things are. And if you stop and think about

  81. it when you're in your right mind, you know what

  82. they are too, right? And then when we are dealing

  83. with other people, so we're dealing with, let's

  84. say, someone who does not know Jesus, and you

  85. tell them about Jesus, you can set them free,

  86. right? Now, truly, it's Jesus who does the setting

  87. free, but we deliver the truth. And if they believe

  88. and receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, then they

  89. become free. That's how that works. And so that's

  90. what we're talking about. We're talking about

  91. the keys, the kingdom of heaven. We're talking

  92. about the keys that the church has. And though

  93. each one of these keys will only work one lock,

  94. but here's the amazing thing about the keys to

  95. the kingdom of heaven. They work all locks. It

  96. works all locks, not the physical locks that

  97. open your house. Although I have stood in front

  98. of a locked door before and prayed. Oh, Lord,

  99. I forgot my keys inside. I'm locked out. What

  100. am I going to do? And a solution came up, and

  101. I managed to get in, right? So I do believe that

  102. sometimes prayer does open locked doors, start

  103. stuck vehicles, and things like that. With that

  104. being said, it's not this kind of physical key

  105. that's limited to one lock. It's the kind of

  106. key that you can go into life, you can face problems

  107. and difficulties, and you can still be who you're

  108. supposed to be, and God will still be with you

  109. through that, and you can overcome. So there's

  110. a lot more to that. We could break it down more,

  111. but I just want you to understand that we're

  112. talking about the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

  113. It's not a physical key. It is a key and it's

  114. an ability to do what's right, to overcome difficulty,

  115. to set people free. Be aware it is not our job

  116. to set free on earth things that don't belong.

  117. We are not liars or thieves. They're not liars

  118. or thieves. We're focused on doing what it is

  119. that God would have us to do. Alright, we're

  120. going to pray together at this time. Then we

  121. have one more song of worship. And then we're

  122. going to let the children go to the classroom.

  123. Alright, so we're going to sing together. We'll

  124. focus on the words after what this time is about.

  125. Father in heaven, we praise you and thank you

  126. that you're working in our midst. That you brought

  127. us together this evening to look into your word.

  128. We hope, Lord, that we come away after looking

  129. into your word with a fresh new understanding.

  130. Something that we can put. into practice in our

  131. lives. The study of your word is like that. It

  132. helps us know how we can use the keys of heaven

  133. that we've been blessed with. It helps us know

  134. how to put them to work and how to bind things

  135. and how to set things loose that are appropriate

  136. in this world. We are free in Christ because

  137. Christ sets us free indeed. Lord, help us be

  138. the church. Help us look into your word and grow.

  139. We do have, as we look around, a number of people

  140. who are hurting today, couldn't make it because

  141. they're sick or whatever. So we pray for them,

  142. Lord. Lord, we pray for Rose just now. She's

  143. having pain in her hand. Lord, we pray that she's

  144. able to have some comfort, that you would ease

  145. her at a cellular level, that you would make

  146. the nerves not inflamed, Lord, that she'd be

  147. able to have the medicine that she needs, whatever

  148. that is. You take care of each one of us as you

  149. take care of her. We pray it all in Jesus' name.

  150. Amen. Amen. All right. This next song is Lord,

  151. Lift My Name on High. So I need some kids who

  152. think they know the motions with a little bit

  153. of help to join me on the stage, please. Everyone

  154. else, you can stand up in the front. Come on.

  155. All right. If you want to be on the stage, I

  156. will do motions in the aisles. You can watch

  157. me. Okay worksheets are coming around All right,

  158. so last week we began looking at a particular

  159. character. You just have the second half of his

  160. name What is his name? It is Joe Abba. Don't

  161. forget that and there that makes it a completely

  162. different person Joe Abba Okay, so we're looking

  163. at Joe Abba. We're looking at him in the context

  164. of the time when David was out from Jerusalem.

  165. So all of this has been about people who were

  166. present with David, present during that time,

  167. present with Absalom, whatever, during that time

  168. when Absalom came and became the king, and David

  169. fled out of Jerusalem down across the Kidron,

  170. through the Kidron Valley, and over across the

  171. Jordan River. And then later there is a huge

  172. battle there, and David comes back and becomes

  173. king again. But we started with folks that were

  174. during that period of time when David lost his

  175. kingship. And Joab was there. You know a little

  176. bit about Joab already. Before we start this

  177. worksheet, let's see if we can just kind of test

  178. ourselves a little bit. If you need to look back

  179. at last week's worksheet, you can. But if you

  180. can just do some from memory, that would be good.

  181. Joab is related to David. How? Does anybody remember?

  182. Okay, David's sisters. Son. So he's his nephew.

  183. That's right. So he's David's sister's son. And

  184. what was Joab's job? He was the leader of the

  185. army, right? So he had been a general. So you

  186. can look elsewhere and see that he was sort of

  187. one of the mighty men, but he wasn't one of the

  188. three mighty men. He was one of the bigger group

  189. of heroes, basically, and became the general.

  190. Interestingly enough, both of his sons, become

  191. mighty men as well. So this is a heck of a family.

  192. And we may look at them a little bit. One of

  193. them is mentioned in that period of time, but

  194. not very much. So we may or may not. I don't

  195. know. As the Lord leads, we may look at them.

  196. So last week, we looked at Joab all the way back

  197. kind of to his beginning. We saw that David's

  198. sister had him as a child, raised him. He became

  199. David's kind of like right -hand man, general

  200. of the armies and so on. During the time when

  201. Absalom had come in and taken control, though,

  202. Joab was not fully in charge of the army, right?

  203. He was only in charge of a portion of it. You

  204. remember the portion? Anybody? Going once? Okay,

  205. one -third. So he was in charge of one -third

  206. of the army during that period of time. And then...

  207. There are sort of like two kingships for a little

  208. while as Absalom is the king, right? And then

  209. Absalom puts another guy in charge of the army.

  210. He's got to do that because Joab is off with

  211. David. And that's where we're going to kind of

  212. pick up the story is Joab's interactions with

  213. this other guy. And so the first text, the upper

  214. right -hand corner, but with the number one,

  215. is from 2 Samuel 19. And the verses are 13 and

  216. 14. So what happens is this is right about the

  217. period of time. Remember that you got to see

  218. that dangling guy with the fishing pole and it's

  219. dangling down. You see the clock there and the

  220. arrow winds clockwise. It means we're going forward

  221. from the occupation, going forward from when

  222. Absalom was in charge. So we're now going to

  223. look at the outcome for Joab. Okay, so in 2 Samuel

  224. 19, 13 to 14, we read these verses. David is

  225. speaking to the leaders of Israel and he says,

  226. Say to Amasa, are you not my bone and my flesh?

  227. May God do so to me and more also if you will

  228. not be commander of the army before me continually

  229. in place of Joab. Then he turned the hearts of

  230. all the men of Judah as one man so that they

  231. sent word to the king saying, return you and

  232. all your servants. And so basically what's happening

  233. is Amasa, and does anybody know Amasa? It's not

  234. a common name. He doesn't last long really in

  235. the story. So Amasa is actually one of David's

  236. sons by somebody that you might know if you've

  237. been around for the last couple of months, right?

  238. David picks up a very wise woman as a wife. Does

  239. anybody remember her name? Abigail, very good.

  240. And with her, he has a son named Amasa. So this

  241. is sort of his son from one of his wives. But

  242. he stayed with Absalom, and Absalom made him

  243. the leader over the army, and he was extremely

  244. popular. Extremely popular. So what's going on

  245. here is David is sending a message through the

  246. priests back to all the leaders who were still

  247. in Jerusalem, basically saying, take me back

  248. as king. And so, first of all, David is saying

  249. that Amasa would, so it's Amasa would what? Lead

  250. the army. Keep going. Nope, not Judah. In Joab's

  251. place. That's correct. Although, actually, geographically,

  252. Holly, you are correct. It is in Judah. But it's

  253. in Joab's place. Okay, so Absalom first installed

  254. Amasa as the leader, and now David is saying,

  255. well, you'll be the leader of everybody. You'll

  256. be the leader of the full army, right? So even

  257. though he was with Absalom, even though he was

  258. with Absalom, he would be the, thank you very

  259. much for that. I'll take that. He would be the

  260. leader of the full army. Now, what happens when

  261. you make a very popular general the leader of

  262. the army? Say it again. He's appreciated, right?

  263. Say it again. I can't hear you. Yeah, he's going

  264. to be in charge and they want him in charge.

  265. And so now the people that were kind of questioning

  266. about David coming back, they're all like, oh

  267. yeah, hey, that sounds good. Remember back when

  268. we studied the first part of Joab's life and

  269. David put Joab in charge of the army? Do you

  270. remember when that happened? We talked about

  271. that last week. And he put him in charge of the

  272. army and then he had problems with him, right?

  273. He said, I'm intimidated by Joab. That Joab and

  274. the sons of my... sister, are so powerful. What

  275. am I going to do with them? You follow? So now

  276. he's doing the same thing with Amasa. By putting

  277. Amasa in charge, the bigger army is there already.

  278. All the tribesmen didn't come up to fight. A

  279. lot of people did, but not everybody did, right?

  280. So there's hundreds of thousands of warriors

  281. that are loyal to Amasa. And so he's getting

  282. their loyalty by putting Amasa in charge. It's

  283. a tactic that David has used before. But who

  284. do you suppose is not very happy about that?

  285. Joab. Because Joab used to be the leader of all

  286. the army. Now he went into exile with David and

  287. became the leader of only one -third of David's

  288. exile army, but found a great victory. They found

  289. a great victory for David, and now David gets

  290. to come back. And this would be a time where

  291. he could be in charge of the whole army again,

  292. but he's not going to be. It's going to be Amasa.

  293. Okay? All right. So then the next phrase says,

  294. this was part of David's plea. Okay, so what's

  295. happening right now is David is sending a message

  296. through the priest. Can anybody name a priest

  297. that he's using without me going to look it up?

  298. Zadok is one. No, Samuel's not there. Zadok is

  299. one. Abiathar, remember him? Okay, so good. I'm

  300. impressed you got Zadok. He was the big guy.

  301. He's the front name, right? He was the guy who

  302. came out to David and said, hey, I'll go with

  303. you into the wilderness. I'll bring the Ark of

  304. the Covenant. We studied that. Zadok was one

  305. of the guys that we looked at, right? And so,

  306. yeah, so through Zadok and Abiathar and the others,

  307. he's sending this message back in there, and

  308. that's part of his plea for them to take him

  309. back as their unified king. And so then the TPW

  310. is what? If this was part of David's plea, then

  311. the plea worked, and all were devoted. So now

  312. all the leaders and all the soldiers and lieutenants

  313. and majors and colonels, if they even had those,

  314. I doubt they had them, but all the heroes that

  315. were already there, now not the ones necessarily

  316. that were with Joab, right? But all of them that

  317. were already there are now going to be loyal

  318. to David, okay? Going to number two, moving right

  319. along. Now we're in 2 Samuel chapter 20. So if

    2 Samuel 20 chapter mention

  320. you're following along in your Bibles or making

  321. notes, you can look it up later, whatever. In

  322. chapter 20, And we're going to begin in verse

  323. 4. Now this will be a little longer. So you're

  324. going to have to listen to pick out the details.

  325. There's been a revolt. All were devoted. All

  326. the people of Jerusalem became devoted to David

  327. being their king again. Okay? Alright, so now

  328. here we are. There's been another revolt. There's

  329. a guy, we'll get his name here in a minute, who's

  330. setting himself up to revolt against David to

  331. be king. Verse 4 says, Then the king said to

  332. Amasa, Call out the men of Judah for me within

  333. three days and be present here yourself. So he

  334. wants them to go all throughout the area of Judah

  335. in three days and call up a whole big old army

  336. and be ready to lead it. Seems like a completely

  337. reasonable demand of the person who's in charge

  338. of the entire army, right? Sounds good. So Amasa

  339. went to call out the men of Judah. but he delayed

  340. longer than the set time which he had appointed

  341. him. Whoops. Supposed to get the army in three

  342. days. Three days comes and goes. The king doesn't

  343. have an army. That's a problem. Verse 6. And

  344. David said to Abishai, Now Sheba, the son of

  345. Betri, will do us more harm than Absalom did.

  346. Okay? So now this guy's being likened to the

  347. next Absalom, Sheba, the son of Betri. He's the

  348. betrayer. And because of Amasa taking too long

  349. to get the army together, it's going to be a

  350. problem. That's what David is saying. He says,

  351. take your Lord's servants, so David's servants,

  352. and pursue him so that he does not find for himself

  353. fortified cities and escape from our sight. So

  354. David says to Abishai, by the way, does anybody

  355. know who Abishai is? He's famous of Joab. He's

  356. one of the mighty men. He's one of the big guys.

  357. David's nephew, grandnephew? What does that make

  358. him? I don't know. I don't even know what you

  359. are if you're a nephew, if you're the son of

  360. a nephew. Like a cousin, I guess. I don't know.

  361. Anyway, the point is, he's a big dude. Important.

  362. But then guess what? If Abishai is going to go

  363. out, who else do you think is going to go out?

  364. If Abishai is going to take all the remaining

  365. men and go out after him, Joab is going to go

  366. out, right? Okay, so here we go. Joab is back

  367. on the scene. Verse 7. So Joab's men went out

  368. after him. along with the Cherethites and the

  369. Pelethites and all the mighty men. And they went

  370. out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of

  371. Betri. When they were at the large stone, which

  372. is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. So now

  373. Amasa was supposed to be going out to summon

  374. the whole army, and he is the guy who's supposed

  375. to be in charge of the whole thing. But David

  376. now has given over some authority to Abishai,

  377. and Abishai has shared that authority with his

  378. father Joab. Now Joab was dressed in military

  379. attire. So he's got his kind of military officer's

  380. robe on. And over it was a belt with a sword

  381. in its sheath fashioned at the waist. So he's

  382. got a military robe on ready to fight. And he's

  383. got a nice belt with the sword in it laying horizontally

  384. usually is how they would have wore them. And

  385. as he went out forward to meet Amasa, the sword

  386. fell out. Now that doesn't usually happen, okay?

  387. But the sword fell out of the sheath. Joab said

  388. to Amasa, is it well with you, my brother? So

  389. it's a positive greeting, but do you hear the

  390. sarcasm or the sort of, what's he saying? It's

  391. a passive -aggressive question. What's he saying?

  392. Say it again. Yeah, what? Can you handle this?

  393. You went out to get an army, you didn't come

  394. back. What happened? Now, he didn't come up to

  395. him and just say, in front of everybody or whatever,

  396. you're a piece of dirt, you screwed up. You know,

  397. David didn't say anything like that. So he doesn't

  398. have any, Joab doesn't have any authority really,

  399. right? But it's sort of like that passive aggressive

  400. statement. Like when somebody shows up to your

  401. party 10 minutes late and you walk up to them

  402. and you say, hey, is everything okay? What are

  403. you really saying? You're saying, why are you

  404. late? Right? Or whatever. Yeah, so that's what's

  405. going on there. Joab said to Amasa, is it well

  406. with you, my brother? It's kind of an accusation.

  407. And Joab took Amasa by the beard. Uh -oh, we

  408. know what's coming, don't we? With his right

  409. hand to kiss him. This is pattern behavior for

  410. Joab, isn't it? But Amasa was not on guard against

  411. the sword which was in Joab's hand. So he struck

  412. him in the belly with it and poured out his inward

  413. parts on the ground and did not strike him again

  414. and he died. That's interesting. Kind of contrasted

  415. with Absalom. He got three spears in the heart

  416. and still didn't die. And this guy, Amasa, he

  417. takes one sword to the belly and dies. Yeah.

  418. Then Joab and Abishai, his brother, pursued Sheba,

  419. the son of Betri. Now there stood by him one

  420. of Joab's young men and said, Whoever favors

  421. Joab and whoever is for David, let him follow

  422. Joab. But Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in

  423. the middle of the highway. So he's dying. He's

  424. not quite dead yet. His guts are pouring out.

  425. His blood's all over the place. He's wallowing

  426. around in the middle of the highway. And they're

  427. asking people right there, Come follow us. Now

  428. remember, Amasa is a popular guy, or was. Now

  429. he's gutted, so that's not popular. But right

  430. up until there, he's a pretty popular guy. Now

  431. they see Amasa laying there, and they're recruiting

  432. men right there where he's laying. Amasa lay

  433. wallowing in his blood in the middle of the highway,

  434. and when the man saw that all the people stood

  435. still, he removed Amasa from the highway into

  436. the field and threw a garment over him when he

  437. saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

  438. So people basically came there, and they said,

  439. We might want to go fight, but what's the story

  440. here? Why is there a guy with his guts hanging

  441. out on the road and you're recruiting? Is this

  442. a symbol? You know, like, this doesn't look like

  443. it's going to go well. I mean, a lot of questions

  444. that could be raised, right? So they just drag

  445. him off to the side. By now he's probably mostly

  446. dead or unconscious or whatever, and they throw

  447. a blanket over him and leave him off the road.

  448. Not a very nice scene, okay? So let's pick up

  449. the text under 2 Samuel 20, verses 4 to 13. And

    2 Samuel 20:4–13

  450. it first says that David, what? The capital A

  451. is probably a clue. Sent Amasa. Keep going. The

  452. next three words are part of the same sentence.

  453. To, nope. To gather. And the J is Judah. Okay?

  454. So they were going to gather all the army of

  455. Judah. He's not getting all the tribe's armies,

  456. just Judah's army. Okay? David sent Amasa to

  457. gather Judah, but Amasa was late. Amasa was late.

  458. In fact, he kind of never gets the job done.

  459. He never went back to David. So he really never

  460. got the job done. Okay? But that's no reason

  461. to murder a guy, by the way. Okay? Amasa was

  462. late. Joab, Murdered him. That's right. Murdered

  463. him. So Abner murdered him. This is murder, by

  464. the way. They are not at war. He killed him in

  465. cold blood. Same as he did Abner. Yeah. He grabbed

  466. him by the beard, pulled him in to kiss him,

  467. and gutted him. That's pretty wicked. His heart

  468. had to be something. All right. So he murdered

  469. him. The next line says, Amassas. It's an apostrophe

  470. S at the end. Amassas. What? It goes, includes

  471. all the way to the little castle picture there,

  472. if you can do it. What do you think of this?

  473. Amassas what? Not blood. Say it again, Holly.

  474. Nope, not brother. So Joab murdered him. And

  475. Amassas, after you're dead, you're a what? There

  476. you go. Amassas' body. This is strange language

  477. because it's the way I talk, so I'll just give

  478. it to you. Amass's body wound up, or you can

  479. put ended up, but I gave you a W. I say that

  480. phrase quite a bit. You wound up doing this,

  481. wound up doing that. Yep. On the side of the

  482. road. Keep going. Three more. You got the A already.

  483. On the side of the road. Under a cover. Under

  484. a cover. That's right. That's all you did. Now

  485. remember this guy. So the day before, no, let's

  486. say the hour before this event. This guy is the

  487. leader of the entire nation of Israel's army,

  488. 12 tribes. Now he's dead under a cover on the

  489. side of the road, laying in somebody's field.

  490. That's a real turn of events right there. He

  491. lost his life. Okay, so now Joab kind of steps

  492. in, and they're going to go try to get the problem,

  493. because you know how David is. David's a results

  494. guy, right? When David arranged for Uriah the

  495. Hittite to get killed, Joab sent the message

  496. back. And he said, tell him some of your servants

  497. got too close to the wall and some guys got killed.

  498. And then if he says, well, what did you get so

  499. close to the wall for? Then say to him, well,

  500. Uriah the Hittite died and everything will be

  501. fine. Joab recognizes that David is a results

  502. guy. So Joab is going to go try to get the job

  503. done. They go after Betri, after Sheba the son

  504. of Betri. When they were at the large stone,

  505. which is Gibeon, a mass came to meet them. He

  506. killed him, left him laying under a cover in

  507. the road. First he was wallowing around in his

  508. own blood while they were still trying to recruit

  509. the army. That's just terrible. Rated R, basically.

  510. Yeah. Alright, so now we're at... So he's removed

  511. from the highway. All the men passed on after

  512. Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Betri. He went

  513. through all the tribes of Israel to Abel. Even

  514. Beth -Makah. Okay, so there's a place called

  515. Abel -Beth -Makah. Abel's a region. Beth -Makah

  516. is the city in the regions to capital, basically,

  517. of that small area. And all the Berites, and

  518. they were gathered together and also went after

  519. him. They came and besieged him in Abel -Beth

  520. -Makah. And they cast up a siege ramp against

  521. the city. Does everybody know what a siege ramp

  522. is? So basically, one of the many ways that you

  523. overcome a walled city, there's several, in this

  524. day it was the most popular way, is to build

  525. a ramp up to the wall. So literally you just

  526. keep dumping dirt or rock or whatever you can

  527. get closer and closer and closer. You keep hauling

  528. it up and dumping it closer until you have a

  529. ramp up to the wall. Then if the ramp goes to

  530. the top of the wall, then when you're ready,

  531. all the men charge up the ramp, go over the wall,

  532. take the city. If it doesn't go to the top of

  533. the wall, use the ramp for protection and the

  534. men charge up and bust up the wall so that they

  535. can get in. So a siege ramp is a relatively common

  536. method of overcoming a siege. And the city's

  537. locked up. They won't let them in. So it says,

  538. they came and besieged him in Abel Beth -Makah.

  539. And they cast up a siege ramp against the city.

  540. It stood by the ramparts. In other words, it

  541. went all the way up to the top, pretty much.

  542. And all the people who were with Joab were wreaking

  543. destruction in order to topple the wall. So they

  544. were busting up the city's walls. Then a wise

  545. woman called from the city, Here! Hear, that's

  546. H -E -A -R as in hear me. Hear, hear. Please

  547. tell Joab, come here that I may speak with you.

  548. So he approached her and the woman said, are

  549. you Joab? And he answered, I am. Then she said

  550. to him, listen to the words of your maidservant.

  551. And he answered, I am listening. Then she spoke

  552. saying, formerly they used to say they will surely

  553. ask advice at Abel. And thus they ended the dispute.

  554. In other words, they used to come here all the

  555. time seeking wisdom. They always came to us for

  556. wisdom. I am of those who are peaceable and faithful

  557. in Israel. You are seeking to destroy a city,

  558. even a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow

  559. up the inheritance of the Lord? Joab replied,

  560. Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow

  561. up or destroy. Such is not the case. But a man

  562. from the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son

  563. of Betri by name, has lifted up his hand against

  564. King David. Only hand him over and I will depart

  565. from the city. And the woman said to Joab, Behold,

  566. his head will be thrown to you over the wall.

  567. Then the woman wisely came to all the people,

  568. they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Betri,

  569. and they threw it to Joab. So he blew the trumpet,

  570. and they were dispersed from the city each to

  571. his tent. And Joab also returned to the king

  572. at Jerusalem. Listen to number 23. Now Joab was

  573. over the whole army of Israel. And Benaiah, the

  574. son of Jehoiada, was over the Cherethites and

  575. the Pelethites. And Adarim was over the forced

  576. labor. And Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahalud, was

  577. the recorder. Sheba was the scribe. Zadok and

  578. Abiathar were the priests. And Ira, the Jerite,

  579. was also a priest to David. Okay? So he got it

  580. back, didn't he? Because he realized one very

  581. key important thing about David, which was, not

  582. on the paper, but I said it. David was a king

  583. who what? Who expected results. He was looking

  584. for results. And Joab got results. But he knows

  585. he killed Amasa, right? But he also knows he

  586. killed Abner. Did he do anything about that?

  587. Okay, so here we go. After Amasa winds up, right

  588. there, after he winds up his body on the side

  589. of the road under a cover, the next J is Joab.

  590. And Joab what? It's a verb, but it's kind of

  591. a big verb. Kind of a long one. Starts with an

  592. N. What did he do? Him and the lady entered into

  593. a discussion. He negotiated. Yep. He negotiated.

  594. Joab negotiated. He didn't kill. He didn't destroy

  595. the city. He was close. He proved that he could

  596. do it, but he didn't do it. He negotiated for

  597. the head of Sheba, of Betri. Don't confuse that

  598. Sheba. There are more than one. We did discuss

  599. one before. It's not the same Sheba, obviously.

  600. Okay? So Joab negotiated for the head of Sheba,

  601. which showed tact. The killing of Amasa did not

  602. show tact. That's not tact. But this shows tact,

  603. okay? All right, we're moving over to number

  604. three. Before we go to number three, we're going

  605. to take a little vacation. If you look right

  606. up above there on the A and the B, look in the

  607. circle of the A. You see a little sketch in there.

  608. Does that look familiar? Inside the A, in the

  609. circle or oval. What does it look like? Yeah,

  610. it looks like a map. That's right. So what we've

  611. got here is a map and we're going to learn something

  612. about our little study that we just did. All

  613. right. So that you see the number one, the big

  614. blob on the bottom. If you look on the right

  615. side over here in the B, you can match them up.

  616. So what is that number one on the bottom? Oh,

  617. yeah, I got it right. What is that number one

  618. on the bottom in the map of the promised land?

  619. What's the big blob on the bottom? Come on. Oh,

  620. no, it's water. What water is it? It's the Dead

  621. Sea. Right? So L. One is L, the Dead Sea. Okay?

  622. Now, go to number two, right up there to the

  623. left. I even gave you a J for it, but that's

  624. not the letter for the right side. But if it

  625. starts with a J and it's right there by the Dead

  626. Sea, what is it? It is Jerusalem. That is correct.

  627. Okay? So that gives you an idea of where we're

  628. at on the map. Then the line going up there is

  629. the Jordan River. You don't have to get that

  630. one. Then the body of water at the top up there

  631. is the Sea of Galilee. And if you look way at

  632. the top of the map, you'll see a dot with a little

  633. arrow pointing to it. And it says ABM above it.

  634. And that is what? That is correct. Good job,

  635. sir. That is Abel. I forgot how you say it. Beth

  636. McCaw. Abel Beth McCaw. That is O. So it's L,

  637. M, and O, right in order. I did them right in

  638. order. Okay. All right. So now we're done with

  639. our little vacation to the map, and we're going

  640. back to number three, and we're over halfway

  641. done. The story's going to get even darker for

  642. Joab. It already got really dark. Okay. Number

  643. three. So we've got a new thing going on. In

  644. fact, We've got a new book of the Bible. If I'm

  645. leaving 2 Samuel and I'm going to the new book

  646. of the Bible, where will I be? 1 Kings. That's

  647. correct. Good job. Okay, 1 Kings is next, and

  648. we're in chapter 1. If you'll look in the parentheses

  649. in the middle of the paragraph there, you'll

  650. see that's where that 1 goes. So the question

  651. here is about kingship again, but we're getting

  652. late on in David's life. So during this period

  653. of time, David's got him a hot babe to keep himself

  654. warm. It's absolutely literal. It's absolutely

  655. literal. So he was having trouble staying warm,

  656. even they put him under all the covers. Even

  657. the bed warmers don't help. So they search the

  658. kingdom and they find him a hot chick, a hot

  659. young woman, as they literally describe that

  660. way in the text. And she will now sleep with

  661. him every night to keep him warm. No sex. There's

  662. no sex. It very specifically says that. But she

  663. will be his bed warmer. So we're now in the time

  664. of David's life at which he requires a woman

  665. in his bed to keep him warm. He's old. He's past

  666. his prime. He's not fighting anymore. He hasn't

  667. gone out with the army in a long time. In fact,

  668. the last time he went out, he ran into a descendant

  669. of a guy who was a Gittite, which means he was

  670. from where? If you're a Gittite, you're from

  671. where? Starts with a G. Gath. Nailed it. Well

  672. done, sir. And who was from Gath? Goliath. And

  673. so David ran into one of Goliath's sons a whole

  674. generation later. On the battlefield. And guess

  675. what happened? He almost got killed. David almost

  676. got killed. In fact, he was on the verge of being

  677. killed. Guess who saved him? Not Joab. But close.

  678. Somebody else we just mentioned. Abiathar. Abiathar

  679. saved him. Interesting how it all comes together,

  680. right? Okay, so here we go. We're on number three,

  681. and we've got an aged king. So if you've got

  682. an aged king, that means you probably need what?

  683. Well, yeah, definitely. But right after an aged

  684. king comes a dead king. If you've got a dead

  685. king, you need a new king, a successor. You need

  686. an heir, right? Okay, so that's what we're going

  687. to talk about is who's going to be the heir.

  688. So there's this problem. There's this woman that

  689. David... fell in love with when he saw her bathing,

  690. and then later took her as his wife. The first

  691. baby died, but the second baby lived. And he

  692. becomes a very famous man, Solomon. Now you and

  693. I know that Solomon is supposed to be the heir.

  694. He's the guy who becomes king. But at this part

  695. of the story, we don't have that yet. And so

  696. remember the prophet Nathan? How's the prophet

  697. Nathan famous? What did he do? Yeah, he's the

  698. one who confronted David for having the affair

  699. and getting Uriah the Hittite killed. Right?

  700. Yeah, right. Okay, so now you got Nathan, and

  701. he spoke to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon.

  702. That's in verse 11. So basically what's happening

  703. is Bathsheba's worried that Solomon's not going

  704. to get to be king, but David promised her that

  705. he would be king, and so they're having this

  706. little powwow. Nathan spoke to Bathsheba, the

  707. mother of Solomon, saying, have you not heard

  708. that Adonijah, the son of Haggath, has become

  709. king? And David, our Lord, does not know it.

  710. So now come, please let me give you counsel and

  711. save your life and the life of your son Solomon.

  712. So Nathan, the prophet, is advising Bathsheba

  713. on how to save herself and Solomon because Adonijah

  714. is going to be king. And if Adonijah is going

  715. to be king, he's surely going to kill Solomon

  716. and Bathsheba because they have a rightful claim

  717. to the throne. And so Nathan's saying, protect

  718. yourself. He says, Go at once to King David and

  719. say to him, Have you not, my lord, O king, sworn

  720. to your maidservant, saying, Surely Solomon your

  721. son shall be king after me, and he shall sit

  722. on my throne? Which he had promised that, by

  723. the way. Why then has Adonijah become king? Behold,

  724. while you are still there speaking with the king,

  725. I will come in after you and confirm your words.

  726. So Nathan's going to back her up. So Bathsheba

  727. went into the king in the bedroom. Now the king

  728. was very old. It doesn't say whether, oh yes

  729. it does. And Abishag the Shunammite was ministering

  730. to the king. So there's the woman sleeping with,

  731. so this is Bathsheba's husband, David. She's

  732. not keeping him warm. The hot chick is keeping

  733. David warm. when Bathsheba comes in there to

  734. entreat him, right? Bathsheba bowed and prostrated

  735. herself before the king, and the king said, what

  736. do you wish? And she said to him, my lord, you

  737. swore to your maidservant by the lord your god,

  738. saying, surely your son Solomon shall be king

  739. after me, and he shall sit on my throne. Now

  740. behold, Adonijah is king, and now my lord the

  741. king, you do not know it. He has sacrificed oxen

  742. and fatlings and sheep in abundance and has invited

  743. all the sons of the king and Abiathar the priest

  744. and Joab the commander of the army. but he has

  745. not invited Solomon your servant. As for you

  746. now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel

  747. are on you to tell them who shall sit on the

  748. throne of my lord the king after him. Otherwise

  749. it will come about as soon as my lord the king

  750. sleeps with his fathers that I and my son Solomon

  751. will be considered offenders. Behold, while she

  752. was still speaking with the king, Nathan the

  753. prophet came in. They told the king, saying,

  754. Here is Nathan the prophet. And when he came

  755. in before the king, he prostrated himself before

  756. the king with his face to the ground. Nathan

  757. said, My lord, the king, have you said Adonijah

  758. shall be king after me? And he shall sit on my

  759. throne? For he's gone down today and has sacrificed

  760. oxen, fatling, sheep in abundance, has invited

  761. all the king's son and the commander of the army.

  762. There's Joab again. He's in there. He's definitely

  763. getting credit. And Abiathar the priest. And

  764. behold, they are eating and drinking before him.

  765. And they say, Long live King Adonijah. But me,

  766. even me, your servant, and Zadok the priest,

  767. and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant

  768. Solomon, he has not invited. So basically he's

  769. saying he's not invited anybody that's loyal

  770. to you. Has this thing been done by my lord the

  771. king, and you have not shown to your servants

  772. who should sit on the throne of my lord the king

  773. after him? Then King David said, Call Bathsheba

  774. to me. And she came into the king's presence

  775. and stood before the king. The king bowed and

  776. said, As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my

  777. life from all distress, surely as I bow to you

  778. by the Lord, the God of Israel, saying, Your

  779. son Solomon shall be king after me, and he shall

  780. sit on my throne in my place, I will indeed do

  781. this day. I will indeed do so this day. Then

  782. Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground,

  783. prostrated herself before the king and said,

  784. May my Lord, the king David, live forever. King

  785. David said, Call me Zadok the priest, Nathan

  786. the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.

  787. They came into the king's presence. The king

  788. said to them, take with you. I'm going to skip

  789. ahead for expediency. The priest, Nathan, they

  790. take Solomon. They blow the trumpet and they

  791. say, long live King Solomon. That's what David

  792. tells them to do. They tell everyone that David

  793. has appointed Solomon to rule over Israel and

  794. Judah. Benaiah, verse 36, Benaiah, the son of

  795. Jehoiada, answered the king and said, amen. Thus

  796. may the Lord, the God of my Lord, the king say.

  797. As the Lord has been with my Lord the King, so

  798. may he be with Solomon and make his throne greater

  799. than the throne of his father, greater than the

  800. throne of my Lord King David. Zadok the priest,

  801. Nathan, Benaiah, they take him down. The Cherethites,

  802. the Pelethites went down. They had Solomon ride

  803. on King David's mule and brought him to Gihon.

  804. Zadok took the horn of oil from the tent that

  805. anointed, and then anointed Solomon. They blew

  806. the trumpet. All the people said, Long live King

  807. Solomon. All the people went out after him, and

  808. the people were playing on flutes, rejoicing

  809. with great joy, so that the earth shook at their

  810. noise. Here we go. This is where it gets to be

  811. Joab in trouble. Now Adonijah and all the guests

  812. were with him, heard it as they finished eating.

  813. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he

  814. said, Why is the city making such an uproar?

  815. While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan

  816. the son of Abiathar the priest came. Then Adonijah

  817. said, Come in, for you are a valiant man, and

  818. bring good news. But Jonathan replied to Adonijah,

  819. No, our lord king David has made Solomon king.

  820. The king has also sent with him Zadok the priest,

  821. Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada,

  822. the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and they have

  823. made him ride on the king's mule. Zadok the priest

  824. and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king

  825. in Gihon, and they have come up with their rejoicing

  826. so that the city is an uproar. This is the noise

  827. which you have heard. Besides, Solomon has even

  828. taken his seat on the throne of the kingdom.

  829. Okay, so that was a lot, I know, but here we

  830. go. The question is, will Adonijah or Solomon

  831. be king? Very good. And J. Joab. Was with Adonijah.

  832. Perfect. Okay. And the, I'll give you the T -H

  833. -E, the, the men were, you have the D, you don't

  834. have anything on the last blank, but you shouldn't

  835. need it. What were the men doing? All around,

  836. what were they doing? Go ahead. No, they were

  837. drinking, but that's not the D. They were declaring,

  838. it's not Solomon. It's Adonijah. They were declaring

  839. Adonijah king. The men were declaring Adonijah

  840. king. And who was there when all of the men were

  841. declaring Adonijah king? It's not on your paper,

  842. but I read it. Who was there? Joab. The person

  843. in charge of all the armies standing by while

  844. they're declaring Adonijah king. Not so loyal

  845. to David now, huh? I'll try to break it down

  846. to help you understand. Okay, so Adonijah wants

  847. to be king. He has a claim. He's another son

  848. of David. He has a claim. But David had said

  849. Solomon would be king. Alright? The men were

  850. declaring Adonijah king. While they were doing

  851. that, capital D, David chose Solomon. David chose

  852. Solomon. Okay, so... This is a long kind of run

  853. -on sentence, not kind of two run together. All

  854. right. That capital A is probably Adonijah. So

  855. it says, those with Adonijah knew or know. I

  856. guess it would be know. What? Want to finish

  857. it? The next word starts with a T. Those with

  858. Adonijah knew they. Say it again. They are in

  859. trouble. Okay. Knowing that they are in trouble.

  860. What? All. Okay. So let me go ahead and let me

  861. read it for you because I think I stopped at

  862. 46 anyway. So here we go. The king's servants

  863. came to bless our Lord the king. That's 47. The

  864. king has also said this. Blessed be the Lord,

  865. the God of Israel, who has granted one to sit

  866. on my throne today while my own eyes see it.

  867. Then 49. Then all the guests of Adonijah were

  868. terrified and they arose. And each went on his

  869. way. In other words, they went home, basically.

  870. They went to wherever they're doing their business.

  871. So it's all go home in fear. They're terrified.

  872. Now the scene is set. I submit to you at this

  873. point in time, Joab's public career as a leader

  874. is over. Because what does David care about?

  875. We already said, David's the kind of king who

  876. cares about what? Results. Who got results today?

  877. In this day, who got the results? David. Nathan,

  878. Zadok, right? They all got through. Not Joab.

  879. He's on the losing side today. Adonijah will

  880. not be king. In fact, Adonijah's in big trouble.

  881. What happens is, and we don't have to study that

  882. because we're not studying Adonijah, what happens

  883. is he runs, takes hold of the horns of the temple,

  884. and he says, I don't want to die. I won't leave

  885. here unless Solomon promises me I won't die.

  886. And they make a pact, and Solomon doesn't kill

  887. him, at least not then. He's done. His goose

  888. is cooked. Alright, now we're on number four.

  889. And we go to another chapter. We're all the way

  890. into 1 Kings chapter 2. That's a 2 at the top.

    1 Kings 2 chapter mention

  891. It's Kings 2. And verses 5 and 6. So now, in

  892. this part, we already had him really old. He

  893. couldn't keep himself warm, right? So now we're

  894. at the very end of his life. And so the top of

  895. that is David is dying. He's actually dying.

  896. And then watch what happens. He says in verse

  897. 5, Now you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah

  898. did to me, what he did to the two commanders

  899. of the army of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner,

  900. and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed.

  901. He also shed the blood of war in peace about

  902. his waist and on his sandals on his feet. This

  903. is what David is saying to Solomon. He says,

  904. So act according to your wisdom, and do not let

  905. his gray hair go down to Sheol. in peace. So

  906. David gives this entreaty to his son. All right.

  907. So the first thing, David is dying. We're under

  908. first Kings two, five to six, the number four.

  909. We'll go back over, make sure we understand what

  910. happened. Okay. David is dying. And he, what

  911. he recites, that's a word you might not normally

  912. use. He recites Joab's apostrophe S Joab's M

  913. murders. His martyrs. He recites Joab's murders.

  914. Remember, in his lifetime, he didn't punish him

  915. for Abner. Yeah, so basically he just tells Solomon,

  916. those were murders. That's not in the war, right?

  917. And he goes, we're not going to go on and read

  918. it, but David goes on to make an argument that

  919. when Solomon does this, he'll be doing it because

  920. everyone needs to know that David did not order

  921. Abner's death. David did not want Amasa dead,

  922. right? He didn't do that for David. Because it

  923. looks kind of like that, right? Joab murdered

  924. them and then came back and got to be king of

  925. the army. It kind of looks like David supported

  926. him doing that. But you'll remember the one time

  927. when he murdered Abner, he even made Joab mourn.

  928. And they walked behind the funeral pyre, you

  929. know, or funeral byre, which is like where they

  930. were... It's a thing that men carry with poles

  931. on it. They carry the body. Okay? Anyway, so

  932. he recites Joab's murders. And then what? That

  933. was a little blunt here. This is a verb that

  934. means he asks him. You could use encourage, but

  935. it's a little more than that. It's entreats.

  936. Did you hear that word before? To entreat someone

  937. is to basically strongly push them to do what

  938. you want or to answer your question. Yep, Solomon.

  939. Perfect. He entreats Solomon to end Joab. Okay,

  940. so we are really at the end now for Joab, aren't

  941. we? He doesn't have much left. So later in that

  942. same chapter of the Bible, in verses 28 to 34,

  943. We could play funeral music or something sorrowful.

  944. Here we go. Now the news came to Joab, for Joab

  945. had followed Adonijah, although he had not followed

  946. Absalom. And Joab fled to the tent of the Lord,

  947. and he took hold of the horns of the altar. It

  948. was told King Solomon that Joab had fled to the

  949. tent of the Lord, and behold, he is beside the

  950. altar. Now I just gave you a little hint there,

  951. right? Remember what I said Adonijah did? He

  952. did the same thing. And he said, I'm not coming

  953. out of here unless Solomon promises me I can

  954. live. And it worked. He lived, at least for a

  955. while. He gets in trouble again later, right?

  956. But for a while, he's allowed to live. So Joab's

  957. trying the same stunt. He's told King Solomon

  958. that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord. And

  959. behold, he is beside the altar. Then Solomon

  960. sent Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, saying, go

  961. fall upon him. So Benaiah came to the tent of

  962. the Lord and said to him, thus the king has said,

  963. come out. But he said, No, for I will die here.

  964. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying,

  965. Thus spoke Joab, and thus he answered me. The

  966. king said to him, Do as he has spoken, and fall

  967. upon him and bury him, that you may remove from

  968. me and from my father's house the blood which

  969. Joab shed without cause. He goes on to say, The

  970. Lord will return his blood on his own head, because

  971. he fell upon two men more righteous and better

  972. than he, and killed them with the sword. While

  973. my father David did not know it, Abner the son

  974. of Ner, the commander of the army of Israel,

  975. and Amasa the son of Jethro, the commander of

  976. the army of Judah, so shall their blood return

  977. on the head of Joab and on the head of his descendants

  978. forever. But to David and his descendants and

  979. his house and his throne, may there be peace

  980. from the Lord forever. Then Benaiah the son of

  981. Jehoiada went up and fell upon him and put him

  982. to death, and he was buried at his own house

  983. in the wilderness. Interestingly enough, I hadn't

  984. planned on reading this, but I'm going to anyway.

  985. The king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada

  986. over the army in his place, and the king appointed

  987. Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar. Interesting,

  988. isn't it? Okay, here we go. Joab ran or runs

  989. to the tent. Solomon sends Benaiah. Benaiah is

  990. B -E -N -A -I -A -H. Benaiah. B -E -N. A -I -A

  991. -H. He is an interesting character, but he is

  992. not in our time period. Joab. What did he do?

  993. Starts with an R. He refuses to come out. And

  994. then the last one, the very end of Joab. Perfect.

  995. Solomon sends Benaiah to kill Joab. And that

  996. is what happened. So we're going to go back and

  997. just recap it briefly just so you understand.

  998. Because as Sola was pointing out, the many names

  999. involved can be kind of confusing. So we've got

1000. Amasa. Under Absalom, Amasa was named the leader

1001. of the army. So when Absalom took over, pretty

1002. boy, built like a tank. When he's ruling, David's

1003. across the river in Ephraim. He puts Amasa in

1004. charge of the armies of Judah. in the surrounding

1005. area. Then when David comes back, and Absalom

1006. is killed by Joab in the tree, and now David's

1007. probably not too happy with Joab. We know that

1008. there was sorrow involved with that. David says,

1009. okay, Amasa stays. Then he gets a request to

1010. go out and get an army together for David, and

1011. he basically fails to get it back in time. He

1012. fails to show up in time. And then Joab takes

1013. that initiative to murder him. I don't use the

1014. word kill. He murdered him. No doubt about it.

1015. He killed him in cold blood. No reason to kill

1016. him. The results of which is Joab is in charge

1017. of the army again. He negotiates to deal with

1018. the guy, Sheba of Betri. And that's how he becomes

1019. in charge of the army again. That's a huge victory.

1020. They didn't have to destroy the city. They didn't

1021. have to finish tearing down the wall. The guy

1022. got what he deserved. Tens of thousands of men

1023. didn't die. So that really shows Joab still knows

1024. his stuff. He's still, as we said before, good

1025. at his job. And so David lets him be in charge

1026. again. As David gets old, he's going to have

1027. to name a successor. He's been delaying in doing

1028. so. Now, he's privately done so. He's told people

1029. it's going to be Solomon, but he's not publicly

1030. done so. Adonijah has a claim to the throne,

1031. and he makes it. And maybe he would have been

1032. a good king in some ways. The betrayal makes

1033. you think maybe not morally, but militarily and

1034. bureaucratically maybe, right? He's got good

1035. connections. And Abiathar goes with them, one

1036. of the acting high priests at the time. Joab

1037. goes with them in charge of all the armies at

1038. the time. So he's got good backing, got all the

1039. political connections he really needs to pull

1040. it off. Except David acts quickly. He assigns

1041. the kingship to Solomon, which he does because

1042. he is entreated by two very interesting characters.

1043. Bathsheba, his wife that he stole, right? And

1044. Nathan, the prophet who confronted him over stealing

1045. her. And David is brought to the point of naming

1046. Solomon as king. Then when David is dying, he's

1047. got some unfinished business. There are some

1048. other unfinished business in there that needed

1049. to be taken care of, but we only looked at Joab

1050. today because he's our guy. Essentially, yes.

1051. Yeah, you could call him, what do they call that?

1052. Serial killer. Yeah, you can call him a serial

1053. killer. But only for his purposes. Only when

1054. it benefits him. Okay? Politically. Yeah. Okay?

1055. So then he gives him some other things that he

1056. needs to do, one of which is building the temple.

1057. Right? So he gives Solomon the job of building

1058. the temple. But he tells him he needs to deal

1059. with Joab. And Joab is dealt with. That's the

1060. end of it. So that sorts out your bad guys. So

1061. the good guys in the story... Give me somebody's

1062. name in this that never goes wrong. Can you come

1063. up with one? In this whole mess, can you come

1064. up with somebody that we don't see them ever

1065. go wrong? Nathan the prophet. He doesn't go wrong.

1066. He doesn't betray David. He doesn't betray God.

1067. So that's a good one. Benaiah doesn't go wrong.

1068. Zadok doesn't go wrong. It's starting to sound

1069. like a certain list. So all the guys that don't

1070. go wrong, where do they wind up? Not priests.

1071. Zadok's a priest. They get the jobs. They get

1072. all the top jobs in the kingdom. Solomon uses

1073. the people that never went wrong to be his cabinet,

1074. if you will. right in modern terms and he's wise

1075. and that's a wise thing to do you got you take

1076. people who show over the track record over the

1077. time right yeah so yeah because there's a whole

1078. encounter where god asks solomon you're going

1079. to leave my people what do you want and instead

1080. of asking for wealth he asks for wisdom and god

1081. says because you chose wisdom to rule my people

1082. i'll give you the greatest wisdom and of course

1083. we believe that he wrote proverbs right and probably

1084. ecclesiastes and of course song of solomon Okay,

1085. good stuff. All right, we're going to ask some

1086. questions real quick, and I'll throw some candy,

1087. and then we'll be through. Does anybody have

1088. any questions of me before I ask you questions?

1089. Okay, my questions will be from both today's

1090. worksheet and last week's worksheet, because

1091. we're going to be questions on Joanne. Yes, sir,

1092. go ahead. Uh -oh, well, you'll have to go back.

  1093. I don't know. I did most of what I'm going to

  1094. ask. I think I covered today. I don't know if

1095. you can do it or not. Give it a shot. You were

1096. teaching last week, so we certainly won't hold

1097. it against you. Because we appreciate teachers

1098. in this room very much. Okay? All right. So here

1099. we go. Name two leaders in charge of the armies

1100. of Judah. Hard and go. Joe Evan Amasa. Is that

1101. what you were going to say? All right. I'm going

1102. to give you candy because you had it. Oh, right

1103. over his head, I think. Okay, very good. Okay,

1104. here we go. Ready for this one? Tell me the location

1105. of Abner's wound that killed him. Caleb. No,

1106. that was the location of Amass's wound. You stole

1107. my next question. Go ahead. Nope, that's Absalom.

1108. Okay, nope. Abner. Yep, it's on the paper, isn't

1109. it? Let me see. No, it's not. We studied it,

1110. but it's not on the paper. Which means there's

1111. a tiny chance I got it wrong. If I say it, will

1112. you know it? In his fifth rib? Does that sound

1113. familiar? Okay, we're just going to go with that.

1114. I don't eat candy, so you're not in any danger.

1115. Okay. After Joab murdered this person, he was

1116. forced to mourn him. Solo. First hand I saw.

1117. Go. Correct. Okay. Also, this one is not on the

1118. paper. Okay. Joab was very successfully politically

1119. in David's court because he understood that David

1120. desired this. Results is the correct answer.

1121. If you don't eat them, you can share them. Okay.

1122. Alright. Okay. When David was old and dying,

1123. this was... prescribed for his inability to stay

1124. warm. Caleb, go. Another girl? Okay, I'll give

1125. you that. Yes, a young woman for his bed. You're

1126. right. Okay. All right. So when David came back

1127. after Absalom and took over, He made Amasa, or

1128. Masa, the boss of the army. This was part of

1129. a larger plan, which would lead to all of the

1130. people doing what? Caleb? Going once? Okay, so

1131. he made Amasa in charge of the army, which was

1132. part of a larger plan, which would lead to all

1133. of the people doing what? It is on your paper.

1134. Say it again. Nope. They were devoted. They would

1135. become devoted. That's correct. Sorry. Pretty

1136. bad toss there. Okay. These two people asked

1137. David to make good on his promise to make Solomon

1138. king. And you have to get both people to get

1139. the answer correct. Solo, you got it? Yes. Yes.

1140. And the other was? Going once. Going twice. Finish

1141. it, Caleb. That's correct. Sorry, Solo. Bathsheba,

1142. Solomon's mother. The one that David fell in

1143. love with while she was bathing on the roof.

1144. Well, that's a certain kind of love. Not a really

1145. biblical love, but... That's not my fault. I'm

1146. supposed to catch him. If it's going behind the

1147. garbage can, it's close enough you can catch

1148. it. Alright. Okay. This is how David felt with

1149. regards to Joab and the sons of Zariah. Hold

1150. on, I'm going to see if somebody else... Go ahead,

1151. Chris. Intimidated. Good word. I like that word.

1152. I think I killed it. Both in the area. Okay.

1153. Early on in our study of Joab, Joab became a

1154. victim exactly one time. Name the crime that

1155. was perpetrated against him. He became a victim

1156. one time. Name the crime that was perpetrated

1157. against him. It's on the paper. Say it again.

1158. No, it's not murder. If murder was perpetrated

1159. against him, he'd be dead. You're close. I need

1160. the crime that was perpetrated against him. He

1161. was a victim of... No. Also probably not a crime

1162. in his day, I'm thinking. You got it, Caleb?

1163. Nope. Wrong answer. I'll give you one clue and

  1164. you'll nail it. What's that? Okay, I'll repeat

1165. the question. Raya's death. Nope. He did arrange

1166. Raya's death, but we're looking for the crime

1167. that was perpetrated against him. Early in our

1168. studies of Joab, a crime was perpetrated against

1169. him. What was the crime? The clue is it was used

1170. to get his attention so that he would bring Absalom

1171. to David. One wants. Tim? That crime is called

1172. what? Arson. That's the crime we were looking

1173. for. Very good, Mr. Tim. Come on. Action. All

1174. right. Yeah, he set his field on fire to get

1175. his attention so he'd bring him back to David.

1176. Yes, it is. It is. Oh, it's on last week's paper.

1177. Sorry. If you're looking at last week's paper,

1178. it is on there. It is under where it says two

  1179. years. 2 Samuel 14, 28 to 33 is the reference.

1180. Okay. Last question. Anybody could get this if

1181. you were paying attention. The story of Joab.

1182. as we studied it, because it can appear elsewhere,

1183. occurs across two books of the Bible.
