  1. Nothing at all. It means nothing at all. Okay,

  2. here we go. So I want to share with you a certain

  3. story out of the book of Judges today. I want

  4. to give you a little bit of a caveat before we

  5. get there. Is it on now? I think it's on now,

  6. yes. So before we get there, we're just going

  7. to drill down on one aspect of the story. So

  8. if you really want to get everything that God's

  9. going to... have for you out of the store, you're

  10. probably going to have to do a little bit more

  11. work than what I can do with you here today,

  12. because we will drill down on just one really

  13. serious thing that the Lord laid on my heart.

  14. That also will keep us from being here for another

  15. two or three hours, which is good. So we're just

  16. going to get right through it and then get on

  17. that one really major thing. But I will show

  18. you how to use it, I think, for your benefit.

  19. I hope so. And I will show you why it's so important

  20. when we get there. First of all, I want to talk

  21. to you, just do an object lesson if I may, about

  22. a sword style. So if you happen to know, does

  23. anyone in the house happen to know what the sword

  24. style, if I say these words, half -sorting, does

  25. anybody know what half -sorting is? You do know

  26. what it is? All right, would you come up here

  27. and demonstrate? Don't hurt yourself, obviously,

  28. because you don't have gauntlets. Basically,

  29. from what I understand, bracing the blade with

  30. your palm. Okay. Mind you, you'd be wearing protection

  31. on your hands, but you're using it to block and

  32. thrust and open up the attacks. Okay. So that

  33. is one very serious part of that strategy, is

  34. you're basically putting a hand on the blade.

  35. Now, to finish the move, a knight in metal armor

  36. or metal gauntlets, I'm going to do it now without

  37. my gauntlets, because this is an actual sword

  38. I'm using up here. It's not supercharged. Okay?

  39. They would actually... drop the sword into both

  40. hands, and swing it like a hammer. Which would

  41. allow these cross pieces to function like a hammer,

  42. and then you can pierce armor where the sword

  43. would be turned away. So if you swing this sword

  44. at steel armor, it will glance off most of the

  45. time. You can find chinks in armor, so you can

  46. thrust in. Or if you can get them out of position,

  47. you can whack them in the armpit or in the back

  48. of the knee, and it'll hurt pretty bad. But plate

  49. armor is not necessarily penetrated by a normal

  50. sword swing if the person swinging is not on

  51. horseback. When you're on horseback, you get

  52. a lot more momentum, or you can be traveling

  53. 20 miles per hour, and it will pierce plate armor

  54. then. But typically, a sword will not do that.

  55. So as Rahm has pointed out, if you put one hand

  56. on the blade, you now have this maneuver, this

  57. maneuver, and then pretty much the Germans invented

  58. what? There's a word for it. I'll give you the

  59. word. It's actually more to how. Thank you very

  60. much. And they would actually switch and put

  61. both hands on the blade and use it like a pick

  62. or a hammer. So I want you to bear that in mind

  63. today as we talk about this text. It is a kind

  64. of combative and even kind of volatile text.

  65. But we're going to use that, what I just showed

  66. you, in spiritual ways. to our benefit, okay?

  67. So maybe you'll say amen with me, a who to holler,

  68. hallelujah, something as we go to Judges chapter

    Judges 3 chapter mention

  69. 3. Okay, this is the word of God from here on

  70. out. Whatever I get right, whatever I get wrong,

  71. as long as I don't read the word incorrectly.

  72. And if I do that, you're responsible to catch

  73. it. Okay, not my job to catch it for you, right?

  74. I'm going to try to read it exactly as it is

  75. written. And then if I miss something or if there's

  76. something in there that the Lord really wants

  77. to highlight for you, then you need to catch

  78. it, okay? Judges chapter 3 beginning in verse

    Judges 3 chapter mention

  79. 12. So we're just coming in after Ophniel and

  80. the land had 40 years of rest. Verse 12 says

  81. this, Now the sons of Israel again did evil in

  82. the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened

  83. Eglon, the king of Moab, against Israel because

  84. they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.

  85. In other words, he's raising up an enemy king,

  86. giving him strength, giving him success over

  87. top of Israel. 13. And he gathered to himself

  88. the sons of Ammon and Amalek, and he went and

  89. defeated Israel, and they possessed the city

  90. of the palm trees. Any Bible scholars in the

  91. room know what city is referred to as the city

  92. of the palm trees? Take a stab at it. If I told

  93. you that it is a prominent city in the region

  94. and would give them control of the entire region

  95. of the Promised Land, now would you take a stab

  96. at it? Say it again. It's Jericho. Does anybody

  97. know something special about Jericho? Jericho

  98. was cursed by Joshua after it was captured and

  99. said that if anybody ever fully rebuilt the city,

  100. they will pay for the first part of the building

  101. of the wall with their firstborn son, and when

  102. they put the gates up, they will pay with their

  103. youngest child's life. And that does happen later,

  104. but it doesn't happen here, and they don't really

  105. rebuild the walls, they just control that region

  106. which overlooks the entirety of the promised

  107. land. And so for them to take over Jericho, which

  108. God conquered in a miraculous way, is a pretty

  109. big deal. And that's what they did. They possessed

  110. the city of the palm trees. And the sons of Israel

  111. served Eglon, the king of Moab, for 18 years.

  112. So for 18 years, they were in oppression. Longer

  113. than last time. Verse 15 says, But when the sons

  114. of Israel cried to the Lord, the Lord raised

  115. up a deliverer for them. And remember that as

  116. we read the book of Judges, another apt term

  117. might be the book of deliverers, actually, because

  118. most of them don't judge the people or judge

  119. legal cases, but they are deliverers in times

  120. of need. Ehud, the son of Gerah, the Benjamite,

  121. a left -handed man. Now, before I go any further,

  122. if you lived in that day and you talk about him,

  123. Ehud, being a left -handed man, does that sound

  124. like a positive or a negative? It was a negative.

  125. So he was to be considered handicapped from birth

  126. because he could not use his right hand the way

  127. that he should be able to. Now, there are advantages

  128. to it, a few, in combat, because it puts your

  129. sword on their sword side instead of on their

  130. shield side. So there's some advantage to that,

  131. but the truth is it also puts your shield on

  132. their... On the wrong side. So it was considered

  133. to be a weakness, and he's considered handicapped

  134. from the beginning. He's always been thought

  135. of as handicapped. In fact, even up until about

  136. 50 years ago or so, people would try very hard

  137. to convert their left -handed child to right

  138. -handedness because they saw it as a flaw, a

  139. disability. And in fact, there was a period of

  140. time where they believed that a lot of kids got

  141. stuttering from being converted from left -handed

  142. to right -handed. Because they would tie their

  143. hand behind their back and everything else. And

  144. finally, people figured out that being left -handed

  145. is pretty normal for some folks and not really

  146. a handicap. But in this day, he is seen as a

  147. handicapped man, basically. And the sons of Israel

  148. sent tribute by him to Eglon, the king of Moab.

  149. So tribute is when you pay them not to bother

  150. you any more than necessary. So he's taking the

  151. tribute. Verse 16. Ehud made himself a sword

  152. which had two edges. It was a cubit in length.

  153. Now, a cubit is the distance from your elbow

  154. to the tip of your fingers, about 18 inches on

  155. most grown men. It could be a little less, a

  156. little more. I don't know what his was exactly.

  157. But it made about a cubit in length. And he bound

  158. it on the right thigh under his cloak. So a man

  159. would normally wear his sword on his hip on the

  160. opposite side of his handedness. So if you're

  161. right -handed, your sword goes over here. So

  162. you can draw it cross -body because a sword is

  163. longer than the length of your arm, usually.

  164. or inconvenient in any case, to get it to clear

  165. of the scabbard. So if it's on this side, you

  166. have to flip it around, and you'll have a poor

  167. grip if you're right -handed drawing from your

  168. right side. If you draw from your left side,

  169. you've got a good firm grip on it, you bring

  170. it out, you can bring it into action faster.

  171. So they would wear it on their left side. So

  172. you would expect him, if he's going to be armed,

  173. to have a sword there, and they will search him

  174. in a moment, and they will not find a sword there,

  175. because he has strapped it on the inside of his

  176. right thigh. So here we go. Verse 16 said, and

  177. Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges,

  178. a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right

  179. thigh under his cloak. And he presented the tribute

  180. to Iglan, king of Moab. Now, Iglan was a very

  181. fat man. And it came about when he had finished

  182. presenting the tribute that he sent away the

  183. people who had carried the tribute. So he was

  184. sending everybody else away. Iglan, I'm sorry.

  185. Our hero, if you will, Ehud, sends everybody

  186. else away. He's the only one still standing there.

  187. Verse 19. But he himself turned back from the

  188. idols which were at Gilgal and said, I have a

  189. secret message for you, O king. And he said,

  190. keep silence. And all who attended him left him.

  191. So in other words, he's requesting a secret audience

  192. with the king. Now it's interesting that people

  193. in the world are lured by secrets. We're looking

  194. for that which is, That's just outside our knowledge.

  195. Always looking for that just outside our knowledge.

  196. And he was very intrigued by this secret message.

  197. Now, what kind of a secret message could Ehud

  198. be bringing that he would need to send his guards

  199. away or whatever? But in any case, he says, I

  200. have a secret message for you. The king first

  201. says, keep silence. And then all who attended

  202. the king left him. Verse 20. And Ehud came to

  203. him while he was sitting alone in his cool roof

  204. chamber. Ehud said, I have a message from God

  205. for you. And he arose from his seat. And he who

  206. stretched out his left hand took the sword from

  207. his right thigh and thrust it into his belly.

  208. The handle also went in after the blades. In

  209. other words, he thrust that sword, probably a

  210. good part of 18 inches or so, into the man's

  211. innards. And the fat closed over the blade. And

  212. he did not draw the sword out of his belly. In

  213. other words, he left it there, 18 inches buried

  214. in this very rotund ruler. And the refuge came

  215. out. So in other words, it started to stink in

  216. the room. It started to stuff coming out of him.

  217. It was really gross. 23. Then Ehud went out into

  218. the vestibule and shut the doors of the roof

  219. chamber behind him and locked them. Then when

  220. he had gone out, his servants came and looked

  221. and behold, the doors of the roof chamber were

  222. locked. And they said, he is only relieving himself

  223. in the cool room. And they waited until they

  224. became anxious. But behold, he did not open the

  225. doors of the roof chamber, because he's got an

  226. 18 -inch sword stuck in his gut. Therefore, they

  227. took the key and opened the doors themselves.

  228. Behold, their master had fallen to the floor

  229. dead. Now Ehud escaped while they were delaying,

  230. and he passed by the idols and escaped to Sirah.

  231. And it came about when he had arrived that he

  232. blew the trumpet. in the hill country of Ephraim.

  233. And the sons of Israel went down with him from

  234. the hill country, and he was in front of them.

  235. So he leads them out into battle. He said to

  236. them, Pursue them, for the Lord has given your

  237. enemies, the Moabites, into your hands. So they

  238. went down after him and seized the fords of the

  239. Jordan opposite Moab. So that cuts off their

  240. reinforcements and also blocks their way home.

  241. And he did not allow anyone to cross. And they

  242. struck down at that time about 10 ,000 Moabites,

  243. all robust and valiant men. and no one escaped.

  244. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of

  245. Israel, and the land was undisturbed, that is

  246. to say, it had peace for 80 years, which is the

  247. longest period of peace that the judges have

  248. yet marshaled. So here's what I want you to see.

  249. It's really kind of one thing, and the Lord really

  250. laid it on my heart. It starts with this. The

  251. world has a tendency to categorize people. It's

  252. too much work to get to actually know someone

  253. completely. You're going to have to sit down

  254. with them over coffee, over meals, call them

  255. regularly, visit with them, talk to them, ask

  256. them questions about their past, where they came

  257. from, about their family, what's their history,

  258. what's their culture. Even your best friends

  259. and even some of your closest family members,

  260. you do not know enough about them to actually

  261. say, I know them the way that would be necessary

  262. for us to really know people. It's just too much

  263. work. So the world has a tendency to tag people.

  264. It's easier to mentally tag them and know how

  265. to deal with them from the moment of tagging

  266. on. This is why, for example, we naturally distrust

  267. anyone who has ever lied to us before. Not because

  268. lying is bad, addictive, wrong, all these things,

  269. right? And because we can expect if they did

  270. it once, they'll do it again. But because we

  271. have mentally tagged them as a liar. It's how

  272. people deal with people at their work. That's

  273. my boss. By now, I know if I say this, this is

  274. how he's going to react. If I say that, this

  275. is how he's going to react. We may be completely

  276. incorrect, but the bottom line is we've tagged

  277. them. So here's how to break out of being tagged.

  278. Ehud has given us the example. He was handicapped.

  279. For his whole life, he was thought of as an inferior

  280. man, an inferior warrior, and incapable. He looked

  281. at his handicap and said, wait a minute, it's

  282. possible that the very thing that everyone has

  283. been tagging me with my whole life, the very

  284. thing that everyone has been saying about me

  285. is the weakest thing, is actually the thing that

  286. God wants to use to bring deliverance to his

  287. people. God raised him up. It says he raised

  288. him up. He empowered him to recognize that God

  289. is the one in charge and God is the one who did

  290. all of these things that made you who you are.

  291. So here's how to break up. Understand that you

  292. are a culmination of many factors. As much as

  293. the world might want to highlight just one of

  294. those, or you might want to look at just one

  295. experience that you've had, or one thing that

  296. you think you've become, you're much more complex

  297. than that. So if a tag is delivered onto you,

  298. understand that that tag is barely scraping the

  299. surface of who you actually are. You have to

  300. know that. This is to say, many things have come

  301. together to make you who you are. Even outside

  302. Christ. People have DNA. People have culture.

  303. People have how they were raised, where they

  304. came from, what they experienced, the abuse they

  305. suffered as a child. Let's be realistic. This

  306. is childhood we're talking about. Hopefully not

  307. terrible abuse, but the reality is children are

  308. abused. If they're not abused by their parents,

  309. which hopefully they're not, but if they're not,

  310. they're often abused by their friends. Search

  311. your history. How often were you abused by the

  312. people that should have been? In your life that

  313. were a positive, your friends, your family members,

  314. your brother or sister, whatever. Bottom line

  315. is we have all those events. So I ask you, who

  316. is it that, number one, wrote your DNA? Who is

  317. it that put you together just exactly the way

  318. you would be in the womb of your mother before

  319. ever you entered in? So those factors are all

  320. controlled by God. According to Acts 17, Paul

  321. says that God orchestrates the boundaries of

  322. our living. So God set up where you live. God

  323. set up the things that you experience. God did

  324. all of that. So God has authored every bit of

  325. it. Even though some of it was sin by other people

  326. or sin by you or things that you wish you weren't

  327. a part of, right, that you maybe regret, all

  328. of those factors then were allowed to come together

  329. to form you. And I would submit to you that by

  330. now you're probably figuring out that you really

  331. don't actually know yourself all that well. Better

  332. than anybody, I'll give you that. Better than

  333. any human alive. But the reality is, do we really

  334. know? Like, for example, I believe wholeheartedly,

  335. I believe absolutely that it is the position

  336. of a Christian man to stand up and protect his

  337. wife and his children and even his church, God

  338. forbid, if something happened. And in our church,

  339. we have a kind of a plan, right? So if the church

  340. is ever invaded by a shooter or whatever, the

  341. women will take the children and go one way and

  342. all the men go toward the shooter. It's not run

  343. away, not hide, whatever. We go take him out.

  344. Ten men go after him. Unless he brings a bomb,

  345. he's going down. And so even though I believe

  346. that's true and I want that to be the kind of

  347. man that I am, do I really know? Do I really

  348. know that when that time comes that I will step

  349. up and have the courage? I've walked into crazy

  350. things. I've seen and done crazy things. But

  351. will I be focused on doing the right thing at

  352. that time? I'm not sure I know myself well enough

  353. to know for sure what I will do in every circumstance.

  354. But what I can say for sure is that God wove

  355. together all those factors. Some of them may

  356. be considered bad. Consider, if God can use the

  357. very thing that you're going through, the difficulty,

  358. the tag that you've been hit with, if you will,

  359. that somebody labeled you with, if he can use

  360. that for his purposes, that's what Ehud said.

  361. God can use my left -handed handicappedness,

  362. and I can make a sword, and I can put it where

  363. they will not as likely be prepared for me to

  364. carry a weapon. And maybe I'll die trying to

  365. pull this off, but maybe I won't. And clearly

  366. he didn't. And it was Ehud's strong, I submit

  367. to you that it was Ehud's strong left hand that

  368. buried that sword 18 inches deep in the enemy

  369. king. The handicap of the man used to overcome

  370. the things of life. If God can use the very thing

  371. that you are labeled with, the very handicap

  372. that you supposedly have, the diagnosis or the

  373. prognosis or the weakness or the handicap, if

  374. he can do that, then understand, first of all,

  375. his presence will be clearly felt, at least by

  376. you. I look back at who I was before I got saved.

  377. I've said this many times. Before I got saved,

  378. I avoided every opportunity at public speaking

  379. that I possibly could. I missed 38 days of my

  380. junior year of high school to avoid every public

  381. speaking opportunity I would ever have. And when

  382. they first asked me to preach, I said, oh no,

  383. I would never do that. I know who God has made

  384. me to be. See what I was doing there? I was believing

  385. the tag. I said, no, no, I know who God has made

  386. me to be. I would never be called to do that.

  387. He's going to use me, I'm sure, but never that.

  388. And for 48 hours, I couldn't sleep and I couldn't

  389. eat and I felt sick and sweaty. And I didn't

  390. have a fever. I didn't have any other symptoms.

  391. I just couldn't eat. I felt sick and sweaty.

  392. And I said, Lord, is this something I've done?

  393. I wasn't even thinking about the fact I said

  394. no, because I was sure I would never preach.

  395. And the Lord said, you said no. He said, will

  396. you pray about it? And I said, you said no, you

  397. wouldn't even pray about it. You wouldn't even

  398. bother to ask me if you should. And I said, okay,

  399. I'm asking you now. And he said, yes, you should.

  400. And I'm like, no, no, I don't want to do that.

  401. And he says, and that's why. And then fast forward

  402. now, I've been preaching for... Two and a half

  403. decades. Preaching the gospel. And yes, am I

  404. afraid I won't get it right? Sometimes. Do I

  405. realize that that's who I am outside Christ?

  406. Yes. But I also realize that God has used that

  407. to make something in my life that he can use.

  408. And I feel his presence when I'm writing a sermon,

  409. when I'm praying for what I'm supposed to say,

  410. when I'm standing here right now, knowing that

  411. God is saying through me what it is that God

  412. wants to say, I feel his presence. And if you

  413. can allow that very thing that would hold you

  414. back, that diagnosis, that prognosis, that tag,

  415. that disability, to become a thing that God uses

  416. for his purposes, then you too will feel his

  417. presence. Notice also that if the world is trying

  418. to label you, if they are wrong about you, if

  419. they try to put that label on you and then later

  420. you prove that they are completely wrong. Right?

  421. So they thought you were nothing, nobody, not

  422. honest, not good, not strong, weak in some way.

  423. And then you step up and you do amazingly in

  424. the Lord. You do exactly what it is that God

  425. would have you to do. Then if they were wrong

  426. about you, they just might start to think, well,

  427. if I was wrong about him or her, maybe I'm wrong

  428. about God. And God can use that then to open

  429. them up to the possibility that they have bought

  430. into the lie, the trap, the death that has been

  431. offered by the world, and that they too are missing

  432. out on this freedom in Christ. So ask yourself,

  433. what can I do to put it to use? Well, let's look

  434. at his example. He created a tool. You may need

  435. to create a tool, right? I know a couple of teachers

  436. who were paralyzed. One was in a motorcycle accident.

  437. Another one was like cerebral palsy or something.

  438. And they were in a wheelchair. They got a wheelchair.

  439. Then they got a motorized wheelchair. And then

  440. they went everywhere teaching the truth and the

  441. gospel on wheels, not on feet. Right? And so

  442. we have the shoes of peace and they had the wheels

  443. of peace. They would go. They found out what

  444. the tool was that was going to allow them to

  445. live beyond their handicap, live beyond their

  446. weakness, and began to do that which God was

  447. supposed to do. You may be like, well, I don't

  448. read so well. You know, my academic level is

  449. not super great. There are audio Bibles. There

  450. are video Bibles. There are commentaries and

  451. people will explain to you what it means. There

  452. are pastors and teachers of Sunday school. There

  453. are tools that will give you the ability to understand

  454. what it is that you need to know from His Word.

  455. You can go further with that. You say, well,

  456. I'll probably never make a lot of money. Listen,

  457. you don't need to make a lot of money in life.

  458. Nobody needs to make a lot of money. Nobody.

  459. Now, you might say, well, I've got a $300 cell

  460. phone bill. Well, you have a different problem.

  461. Your problem is not that you need to make a lot

  462. of money. Your problem is that you have a $300

  463. cell phone bill, right? And you can adjust your

  464. life and say, well, what is my tool? I can have

  465. a spending plan. I can have a budget. I can have

  466. five different streams of income, giving me each

  467. one a little bit until I survive and then have

  468. a little to give and to prosper. The bottom line

  469. is, you can find a tool, a method, to capitalize

  470. on the world's ignorant point of view where they've

  471. labeled you and you've accepted that label. You

  472. can be found busy at God's work while all the

  473. world says you are hindered from doing anything

  474. of value. Chief, of course, is trust in the Lord

  475. because it is He that wrote you. Your character

  476. was written by God. Your body, designed by God.

  477. Your mind, designed by God. It's He that wrote

  478. you and He that put you where you are. And now

  479. He can raise you up and allow you to do the things

  480. that He desires to do through you. Chief then,

  481. the one major thing that Ehud got right was he

  482. trusted in the Lord and allowed the Lord to raise

  483. him up. It says this in the New Testament, For

  484. consider your calling, brothers and sisters,

  485. that there were not many wise according to the

  486. flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, But God

  487. has chosen the foolish things of the world to

  488. shame the wise. And God has chosen the weak things

  489. of the world to shame the things which are strong.

  490. And the significant things of the world and the

  491. despised, God has chosen. The things that are

  492. not, so that he may nullify the things that are.

  493. So that no human may boast before God. For it

  494. is due to him, to God, that you are in Christ

  495. Jesus. who became to us wisdom from God, and

  496. the righteousness and sanctification and redemption,

  497. those are three really big words, so that as

  498. it is written, let the one who boasts, boasts

  499. in the Lord. There is one tag only in Scripture,

  500. just one that God desires to place on you or

  501. on me. In Romans 8 it says this, it says, For

  502. all who being led by the Spirit of God, these

  503. are the sons and daughters of God. For you have

  504. not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear

  505. again, but you have received a spirit of adoption

  506. as sons and daughters by which we cry out, Abba,

  507. Father. The Spirit Himself testifies with our

  508. spirit that we are children of God. And if children,

  509. heirs also. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with

  510. Christ if indeed we suffer with Him so that we

  511. may also be glorified with Him. See, it's not

  512. always going to be good by your estimation. There's

  513. going to be difficulty. And when you go through

  514. that difficulty, you can come out shining. You

  515. can come out as a child of God. You can come

  516. out as a child of God if indeed you're being

  517. led by the Spirit of God. Just one label, child

  518. of God. That's all God wants for you. And every

  519. time someone says to you, well, you're weak,

  520. you can say, no, I'm a child of God. Every time

  521. someone says to you, well, you're fat, you can

  522. say, I'm a child of God. You say, you're old,

  523. I'm a child of God. You're not creative, I'm

  524. a child of God. You talk too much, I'm a child

  525. of God. And you can just keep saying, I'm a child

  526. of God, because all those other labels, at best,

  527. are tools that you can turn around and use for

  528. your benefit in the kingdom of God. Romans 12.

  529. One says that we are to be transformed by the

  530. renewing of our mind, not conformed to the way

  531. the world sees us. And in part, this means not

  532. being smaller, not being lesser, not being trapped

  533. into the image that the world will try to pin

  534. on you, but being changed into the new you, the

  535. correct you, the free you, the authorized you,

  536. the you that God is heading you towards, the

  537. you that God is making you into. diagnosis, career

  538. or job title. I'm a doctor. I'm a scientist.

  539. I'm a mower. I'm a drill rig operator. I'm a

  540. plumber. I'm a maintenance man. These are all

  541. just things of this title. None of those things,

  542. by the way, everything that I just said, are

  543. there doctors in heaven? Sure, there are doctors

  544. in heaven. Is there any doctoring in heaven?

  545. No. Are there mowers in heaven? Sure, there are

  546. mowers in heaven. But is there any lawns to mow

  547. in heaven? No. Right? Should I go on? The jobs

  548. and titles that we accept here, they become our

  549. vocations. They become our pathway to income.

  550. But the work that you do must be done in the

  551. Lord, authorized by the Lord, the career that

  552. you have. If you're not empowered to do it by

  553. God and sent to do it by God, then don't do it.

  554. Don't have anything to do with it. But if He

  555. does tell you, this is what I intend to do through

  556. you, then do that. And whatever the world says

  557. otherwise, you tell them, knock it off. I'm a

  558. child of God. Romans 8 .31 says this, What then

  559. shall we say to these things? If God is for us,

  560. who is against us? He who did not spare His own

  561. Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will

  562. He not also with Him freely give us all things?

  563. Here it is, 33, listen for it. Who will bring

  564. a charge against God's elect? In other words,

  565. who's going to tell you what you are? Who's going

  566. to tell you what you deserve? Who's going to

  567. label you? Who's going to tag you? Who will bring

  568. a charge against God's elect? God is the one

  569. who justifies. Who is the one who condemns? Who

  570. will take you out of the hands of the Lord and

  571. tell you that you are weak? Tell you that you

  572. are not capable? Tell you that you are stuck

  573. in a rut? Who will do that? Christ Jesus is he

  574. who died for us. Yes, rather, who was raised,

  575. who is at the right hand of God. who also intercedes

  576. for us. Who shall separate us from the love of

  577. Christ? Shall tribulation, that means when you

  578. go through trouble, or distress, that means when

  579. your very heart is shaking, or persecution, that

  580. means when the world comes against you for being

  581. a Christian, or famine, that means when you have

  582. lack of food, or nakedness, when you have lack

  583. of clothing or provision, or peril, when you're

  584. in real danger, or sword? The answer is no one.

  585. The answer is you mustn't let them. You mustn't

  586. let them tag you. And when you recognize that

  587. there is a tag, you need to learn, sometimes

  588. crafting a tool or a process, how to use that

  589. tag for God's glory. It's this simple. Our defeat

  590. would be not being glorious, not being victorious.

  591. Not being what God has made us to be. That would

  592. defeat us in this lifetime. You walk away from

  593. God. You do what's wrong. You use the blessings

  594. of God for things that are not godly. And boy,

  595. wouldn't the road of accepting the tags that

  596. people place on you of the world, wouldn't that

  597. be a road to doing that very thing? You want

  598. to be what the world tells you to be so badly

  599. that all your effort goes into that. Whether

  600. it's a good tag or a bad tag. All your effort

  601. goes into meeting the tag that's been placed

  602. on you. That's not what we were created for.

  603. We are meant to be victorious and glorious in

  604. Christ. Our enemies would use literally anything

  605. against us because they are our enemies. There

  606. have been many times in history where one army

  607. went against another and the one army was ill

  608. -equipped and they would literally take pitchforks

  609. and prods and staffs from taking care of the

  610. sheep and rocks. whatever they had in their hands,

  611. because otherwise it would take whatever weapon

  612. they can get. And the enemy will take whatever

  613. weapon he can get, which means if you tag yourself

  614. or allow the world to tag you, then the world

  615. will use it against you because the world system

  616. is one of your enemies. If you speak it out loud,

  617. you say, well, I'm no good because X. From that

  618. moment on, the devil and evil spirits will use

  619. that against you. It's why being rebellious is

  620. addictive. It's why being lazy is addictive.

  621. It's why making excuses is addictive. Because

  622. there are plenty of evil spirits and demons that

  623. will latch on to those things that we have accepted

  624. in ourselves and use them against us. The enemy

  625. will use anything he can get his hands on against

  626. you. As God's children, however, God can and

  627. will use anything at all for our good. Because

  628. He is for us. Because He has that kind of power

  629. and authority. When you go through the worst

  630. suffering or the worst persecution or ailment

  631. or disease or trials and tribulations of this

  632. world, you can know, He says, in this world you

  633. will have trouble, but fear not, for I have overcome

  634. the world. Even in the verse that we just read,

  635. it says, if we are willing to suffer with Him.

  636. In Revelation 3, it says, after having suffered,

  637. if you overcome, I will allow you to come and

  638. sit on my throne with me as my father has allowed

  639. me to come and sit on his throne with him. Yes,

  640. there will be difficulty. Yes, there will be

  641. trials. Yes, there will be troubles. Turn your

  642. difficulty and your trials and your troubles

  643. back on the enemy and beat him to stop with it.

  644. What are we doing? We are victorious in Christ.

  645. You say, well, I get angry so easy. I eat too

  646. much. I sleep too much. I spend too much. I save

  647. too much. I fight too much. I back down too much.

  648. Cut it out. Anything that you have that is a

  649. weakness, turn it around and beat him to death

  650. with it. He's already dead just waiting for you

  651. to strike the blow. As children of God, God can

  652. and will use anything for our good. Being looked

  653. down on makes you especially dangerous. That's

  654. what happened with Eve. Nobody expected the handicapped

  655. little man, unarmed. to take out the king of

  656. the Moabites. And he didn't just do that. He

  657. rallied an army of Israelites to block the fords

  658. and cut down 10 ,000 men. I don't know how many

  659. he took out. Personally. Being looked down on

  660. just makes you especially dangerous. Being labeled

  661. makes you especially dangerous. Being ignored

  662. makes you especially dangerous. And learning

  663. to use your identity in Christ to get hold of

  664. all these things and put them to use for your

  665. benefit and the benefit of the kingdom is part

  666. of being ultimately victorious. You think you

  667. have a weakness? I'll tell you right now, that

  668. weakness turned around and properly used is your

  669. greatest strength. I've traveled with my children

  670. since they were tiny. Kid walked pretty much

  671. even before that a little bit. And oftentimes

  672. we'll go to the hotel pool. It's one of our favorite

  673. places to visit. It comes free. You have to have

  674. a place to sleep anyway, right? So you get a

  675. pool, maybe spend an extra 20 bucks a night,

  676. go to the pool, go swimming. And as they grow

  677. up, every single one of them, we go through this

  678. same cycle. We race, swim, race across the pool

  679. and back. So three times, five times, whatever.

  680. And then inevitably they'll say, well, I don't

  681. want to race anymore. You always win. And I say,

  682. well, I'll give you a head start. How much do

  683. you want? Count to ten, count to five, whatever.

  684. And they'll say, well, count to ten. And then

  685. I'll count to ten. And then usually I'll count

  686. to ten. When they're younger, I would still beat

  687. them. And then when they're a little older, I

  688. wouldn't beat them. And I'll say, well, I'll

  689. give you a five count this time because you beat

  690. me, and so on. What's the point of a head start?

  691. Why does somebody need a head start? Because

  692. they recognize that the other person is better,

  693. faster, stronger, whatever, right? You play kickball

  694. in the backyard and the one team is clearly weaker,

  695. you spot them three runs. Whatever. The head

  696. start is necessary because the one person is

  697. going to win. Understand that the enemy is trying

  698. to handicap you, trying to label you, trying

  699. to tag you because... you're already going to

  700. win. Every time one of those things pops up and

  701. something is trying to hold you back, it's because

  702. you are in Christ already going to win or because

  703. you're getting close to being in Christ if you

  704. haven't accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior

  705. yet and he doesn't want you to win and so he

  706. tags you, labels you, holds you back so that

  707. you cannot win the race. If I went running against

  708. an Olympic racer, I would lose every single time.

  709. They'd spot me. I'd say, we're going to run 400

  710. yards and you're going to spot me 350 and maybe

  711. I'll win. But they wouldn't have a problem with

  712. that because they know that means they are a

  713. winner. Why do you have a problem with it when

  714. the world labels you if they're labeling you

  715. just to hold you back because they already know

  716. that you're going to win in the end? That's what

  717. it's all about in the kingdom of God. It's time

  718. to realize that our handicaps, such as we are

  719. labeled, and remember that some of those things

  720. are job titles, they are skill sets, they are

  721. weaknesses of our physical form, whatever, and

  722. we're labeled like that, and we're only being

  723. labeled like that to hold us back because ultimately

  724. we win anyway. Why? Because we are better, stronger.

  725. If God is for us, who can be against us? Well,

  726. if we let them label us and let them use that

  727. label to slow us down, then we're allowing somebody

  728. to stand against us. If they want to get you

  729. doubting yourself, hold you back in some way,

  730. if you can see a person undermining you, it's

  731. a testimony to your proficiency. Then all the

  732. more, you must know that you are worthy. I've

  733. been reading this little devotional. I like golf,

  734. by the way. Somebody bought this for me. It was

  735. a gift. I think it was my wife. There's a little

  736. story in here about... I folded the page over.

  737. Here it is. We're in the conclusion, by the way.

  738. Sam Sneed, pretty famous golfer. He was known

  739. for gamesmanship, which entails using psychological

  740. tactics to intimidate the opponent. Today, we

  741. kind of call it trash talk or something like

  742. that. Learning the game was not easy for Sneed.

  743. who grew up in the backwoods of Virginia, the

  744. White Sulphur Springs Resort is where he played

  745. in the early days. In the 1930s, living during

  746. the Depression meant he and everyone else did

  747. everything they could just to make a few pennies.

  748. Early on, Snead learned a difficult lesson about

  749. the questionable art of gamesmanship during a

  750. tournament. It was just before the final round,

  751. and he was playing well. Then another golfer

  752. came up to him and casually said, How do you

  753. expect to do well with that left elbow flying

  754. around like that? The comment unnerved Snead.

  755. and he spent the rest of the round distracted

  756. by his own arm movements. The result was an 8

  757. on the second hole and an 80 total, which landed

  758. him in third place. He realized he had been played,

  759. and he determined that the next time someone

  760. tried to get into his head, his response would

  761. be, hey, beat me with your clubs. It was 1972.

  762. I was a college golfer at the time, and had successfully

  763. made it through sectional qualifying of the U

  764. .S. Open. I was now in Charlotte at the regional

  765. qualifier where all the touring pros were qualifying.

  766. It was the first time I had played in an event

  767. with tour players. I played with DeWitt Weaver,

  768. a regular tour player at the time. I stepped

  769. onto the tee and was getting ready to tee off

  770. when I noticed someone standing just a few feet

  771. away from me. I looked up from my ball and there

  772. was Sam Snead with his arms crossed and simply

  773. staring at me. It was the most intimidating thing

  774. ever. I promptly ignored him and proceeded to

  775. hit my ball down the fairway. I was shocked that

  776. a man of that stature would want to intimidate

  777. a college kid. Listen to me. This is your posture.

  778. You should be shocked that the devil, ancient

  779. as he is, some allege once the most beautiful

  780. and strong of angels, that demons, ancient as

  781. they are, long time ago they started this game.

  782. You're a newcomer. That any of them should want

  783. to bother to bring you down, you should go, oh.

  784. I get it now, that anyone would, the world system,

  785. how long has the world system been going on?

  786. A long time before you and I were born. That

  787. these ancient players of this game would come

  788. against us with this feeble tactic, trying to

  789. stop us from being what it is that God would

  790. want us to be. And every time someone tags you,

  791. and especially if it's you personally, but every

  792. time someone tags you, you say, no, I am a child

  793. of God. What game are you playing at? Beat me,

  794. if you can. But I am a child of the king. Truly,

  795. I am unbeatable. If pretty much everything of

  796. this world can be used either by the enemy or

  797. by God's people for blessing or cursing, then

  798. determine to transform, renew, and redeem everything

  799. you touch to bring it into line with his purposes.

  800. Lastly, wear a tag that they can see so they

  801. can find you. Stop trying to hide. As if you're

  802. afraid of one more tag, if you're afraid of the

  803. world judging you for who you are, Jesus said,

  804. by this, all people will know that you are my

  805. disciples. That is to say, they can all see this

  806. one tag if we will wear it, and it is if you

  807. have love for one another. We will stand firm.

  808. Understand that your brother or sister in Christ

  809. is facing trials and trouble. Love them through

  810. it all. That's the tag that they can read. And

  811. for all their efforts, they'll never cover it

  812. up. They'll tag you 40 times, 50 times. They'll

  813. cover you with toilet paper names and well -crafted

  814. visages, something that will block your face

  815. completely so no one can see you. You're downcast

  816. and sad rather than mighty and true. But if you

  817. love your brothers and sisters in Christ and

  818. remain a child of God, these tags, they cannot

  819. block out who you are. Let us not forget that

  820. it says the thief comes to kill, steal, and destroy.

  821. And he's not going to stop trying to kill, steal,

  822. and destroy. Just because you don't like him

  823. or like what he's doing, he will lose and fail

  824. to kill, steal, and destroy when we instead follow

  825. the good shepherd who came that we may have life

  826. and have it more abundantly. Hear me now. Abundant

  827. life is in remembering that every tag, every

  828. event, everything that ever comes against you

  829. can be used by God for your good. Will you join

  830. me today in recognizing that he is the King of

  831. Kings and the Lord of Lords and that Satan, who

  832. may have been the serpent in the Garden of Eden,

  833. some think, tempting Eve would come to you? It's

  834. pretty unlikely, but if he ever comes, treat

  835. it as a great honor. If one of his tactics comes

  836. against you, wield your shield of faith and turn

  837. it aside. If an enemy overtly comes against you,

  838. wield the sword of the Spirit, which is the word

  839. of truth, and defeat them. Don't doubt. that

  840. you are an amazing creation of God, and God can

  841. use you to transform, to renew, and to redeem

  842. everything you touch. And if anyone tells you

  843. otherwise, you tell them, I am a child of God.
