  1. We've now reached some of the darkest times in

  2. Israel's history. The last two weeks we have

  3. looked at particularly dark, dreadful, horrible

  4. encounters where God's people have hurt themselves,

  5. really walked away from the Lord. And we looked

  6. at last week and I mentioned how Really, we need

  7. to remember that everything that's about to happen

  8. happens not amongst a people that are like God's

  9. covenant people, called to be God's people and

  10. focused on God, but a people that are going home

  11. from whatever they're doing to worship their

  12. false gods that have taken concubines, that have

  13. idols in their house, that worship all over the

  14. place in the high places instead of where God

  15. has called them to worship. Thankfully, that

  16. means that there is no reason why we have to

  17. fall into the traps that we're about to see today.

  18. And yet, I will caution you that in many cases

  19. the church has. You may even see some of what

  20. we're about to read today in our own midst. And

  21. I think if that is the case, we need to repent

  22. of that and instead trust in the Lord. So grab

  23. your Bibles and go with me, if you would, maybe

  24. a little who to holler amen as we go to Judges

    Judges 20 chapter mention

  25. chapter 20. Amen. Thank you so much. This is

  26. God's word. What we read today and we are going

  27. to read 28 verses is part of the larger story.

  28. And then if you will listen to what God has to

  29. say, you will for sure be affected. God's word

  30. does not not affect people. It always affects

  31. people. OK, so Judges chapter 20, beginning in

    Judges 20 chapter mention

  32. verse one. We ended with last week. Consider

  33. it. Make a plan and speak up. The Levite was

  34. calling them to act upon the horrible. action

  35. that he was telling them that the benjamites

  36. had done where they killed his concubine we know

  37. that there were more details than that we looked

  38. at them last week but the bottom line is asking

  39. them to act and now they're going to act verse

  40. chapter 20 verse 1 then all the sons of israel

  41. from dan to beersheba including the land of gilead

  42. came out and the congregation assembled as one

  43. person to the lord at mizpah so they're all there

  44. represented not everybody but all there many

  45. representing all the tribes pretty much are represented

  46. And the leaders of all the people and all the

  47. tribes of Israel took their stand in the assembly

  48. of the people of God, 400 ,000 foot soldiers

  49. who drew the sword. Now the sons of Benjamin

  50. heard that the sons of Israel had gone up to

  51. Mizpah. Now remember, the wickedness that happened,

  52. the thing they're about to discuss that they're

  53. concerned about, happened amongst the Benjamites,

  54. right? So the sons of Benjamin now are, uh -oh,

  55. they're talking about what happened. And the

  56. sons of Israel said, Tell us, how did this wickedness

  57. take place? So they're asking the Benjamites

  58. to answer for how what the Levite says happened.

  59. How did that happen? So the Levite, the husband

  60. of the woman who was murdered, answered and said,

  61. I came with my concubine to spend the night at

  62. Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin. But the citizens

  63. of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the

  64. house at night, threatening me. He leaves out

  65. the detail about what they actually tried to,

  66. would like to have done to him. He says, they

  67. intended to kill me. That may or may not actually

  68. be true. We know they intended to have relations

  69. with him, but whether they would have killed

  70. him afterwards is unknown. Instead, they raped

  71. my concubine so that she died. And I took hold

  72. of my concubine and I cut her in pieces and sent

  73. her throughout the land of Israel's inheritance,

  74. for they have committed an outrageous sin and

  75. a vile act in Israel. Behold, all you sons of

  76. Israel, give your response and advice here. Then

  77. all the people rose up as one person, saying,

  78. Not one of us will go to his tent, nor will any

  79. of us go home. But now this is the thing which

  80. we will do to Gibeah. We will go up against it

  81. by lot, and we will take ten men out of a hundred

  82. throughout the tribes of Israel, and a hundred

  83. out of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten

  84. thousand, to supply provisions for the people,

  85. so that when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin,

  86. they may punish them for all the vile sin that

  87. they have committed in Israel. So stop there

  88. for one second, make sure we understand what's

  89. happening. So out of this, this huge army is

  90. going to go up against Gibeah where the evil

  91. thing happened. And one tenth of it is going

  92. to be responsible for supplying all the goods

  93. so that they can do that. Somebody's got to feed

  94. the soldiers, right? Day two, people start getting

  95. hungry. So they have a plan. One tenth of them

  96. will provide for all the other 90 % so they can

  97. go up against Gibeah and produce justice or their

  98. version of justice. Okay. Verse 11 says, So all

  99. the men of Israel were gathered against the city,

  100. united as one man. So that four thousand man

  101. army is going to go against this one city. It's

  102. way more than enough to destroy it, raise it

  103. to the ground, whatever. Not sure that's their

  104. plan just now. They want to see justice done,

  105. supposedly. So they don't necessarily have to

  106. destroy the city to make that happen. They want

  107. to deal with the people who committed that grievous

  108. crime. That's what they're trying to do. Notice

  109. also that they did make an oath. And they said

  110. that no one would go home until this problem

  111. is dealt with. So when you make that kind of

  112. a promise before God, now you're kind of stuck,

  113. right? You're kind of committed into it. So they're

  114. pretty heavily committed to this. Or otherwise,

  115. in theory, they would answer to God. Mind you,

  116. at the same time as they did that, they're also

  117. into idolatrous worship, syncretism, sinning

  118. against God in so many different ways. And so

  119. maybe breaking the oath wouldn't necessarily

  120. mean anything to them. But they made the oath

  121. as a larger group of people all together. The

  122. tribes of Israel sent men through the entire

  123. tribe of Benjamin, saying, What is this wickedness

  124. that has taken place amongst you? So they're

  125. asking everybody. They're getting to the bottom

  126. of it. Now then, turn over the men, the worthless

  127. men who are in Gibeah, so that we may put them

  128. to death and remove this wickedness from Israel.

  129. So this actually doesn't sound too horrible.

  130. They have the manpower. They're standing on right

  131. ground. And they're saying, turn over the criminals,

  132. right? Let's deal justice. But the sons of Benjamin

  133. would not listen to the voice of their brothers,

  134. the sons of Israel. Instead, the sons of Benjamin

  135. gathered from the cities to Gibeah to go out

  136. to battle against the sons of Israel. So the

  137. one tribe, Benjamin, is now gathering up their

  138. soldiers to go and fight against all the others.

  139. From the cities on that day, the sons of Benjamin

  140. were counted 26 ,000 men who drew the sword.

  141. Besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were counted

  142. 700 choice men. Out of all these people, 700

  143. choice men, so not specifically the 700 from

  144. Gibeah, but across the 26 ,700. Out of all these

  145. people, 700 choice men were left -handed. Each

  146. one could sling a stone at a hare and not miss.

  147. which is to say they were very dangerous, right?

  148. Verse 17. Then the men of Israel, besides Benjamin,

  149. were counted 400 ,000 men who drew the sword.

  150. All of these were men of war. So we've got one

  151. side 26 ,700, the other side 400 ,000. Verse

  152. 18. Now the sons of Israel set out, went up to

  153. Bethel and inquired of God and said, who shall

  154. go up first for us to battle against the sons

  155. of Benjamin? Then the Lord said, Judah shall

  156. go up first. So I want you to see the question.

  157. We're not going to drill down on it too heavily,

  158. but look at the question. They asked God, who

  159. shall go up first to fight? Did you notice anywhere

  160. in the story whether they asked God whether or

  161. not they should fight? Whether or not they should

  162. gather together 400 ,000 strong? So that didn't

  163. happen. So they're now already sort of in the

  164. midst of doing this. They've already gathered.

  165. They've already made their threats. They've made

  166. their oaths, etc. And now they ask God, who should

  167. go up first? And God says, Judah shall go up

  168. first. So the sons of Israel got up in the morning

  169. and camped against Gibeah. The men of Israel

  170. went to battle against Benjamin, and the men

  171. of Israel lined up for battle against them at

  172. Gibeah. Then the sons of Benjamin came out of

  173. Gibeah and struck to the ground on that day 22

  174. ,000 men of Israel. I want to be real clear,

  175. so you get this picture in your head. That means

  176. that outside Gibeah, there was nowhere that you

  177. could stand that was sure footing. that you were

  178. not either standing between bodies or literally

  179. standing on bodies. The math of it is they were

  180. standing on dead bodies. From now on in the story,

  181. as they're fighting, they might pile the bodies

  182. up overnight so that they could have places to

  183. stand to fight the next day and the piles will

  184. get higher and higher. Okay? 22 ,000 men. And

  185. by the way, it was 22 ,000 men killed by the

  186. men of Gibeah and the Benjamites. So they are

  187. winning. against this massively superior force

  188. currently their wing. But the people, the men

  189. of Israel, showed themselves courageous and lined

  190. up for battle again in the place where they had

  191. lined themselves up on the first day. And the

  192. sons of Israel went up and wept before the Lord

  193. until evening and inquired of the Lord, saying,

  194. Shall we again advance for battle against the

  195. sons of my brother Benjamin? So basically, they

  196. lost 22 ,000 guys. Now they're going to ask God

  197. if they should fight. And the Lord said, Go up

  198. against them. So the sons of Israel came against

  199. the sons of Benjamin on the second day. And Benjamin

  200. went out against them from Gibeah the second

  201. day and struck to the ground again 18 ,000 men

  202. of the sons of Israel. All of these drew the

  203. sword. So now they've killed 40 ,000 men from

  204. Israel. Remember, they were 26 ,700 strong themselves

  205. to start. And they've surely had losses, although

  206. we're not tracking what those are, really. Right?

  207. But they've now killed 40 ,000 men, bodies from

  208. all the tribes of Israel, strewn across the ground

  209. for miles in every direction from this relatively

  210. small town that could only field 700 soldiers.

  211. Okay? Then all the sons of Israel, all the people

  212. went up and came to Bethel. Now Bethel is right

  213. by Shiloh, and this is kind of like where the...

  214. Tabernacle was in that day. And they wept and

  215. remained there before the Lord, and they fasted

  216. that day until evening. And they offered burnt

  217. offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

  218. And the sons of Israel inquired of the Lord,

  219. for the Ark of the Covenant was there in those

  220. days. So they bowed down before the Ark of the

  221. Covenant, begging God, asking God, what do we

  222. do now? What do we do now? 40 ,000 men. The countryside

  223. is covered in the bodies of our brothers. What

  224. do we do? 28. And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar,

  225. Aaron's son, stood before it to minister in those

  226. days, saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle

  227. against the sons of my brother Benjamin, or shall

  228. I stop? And the Lord said, Go up, for tomorrow

  229. I will hand them over to you. So after they lost

  230. 40 ,000 men, they begged God, Shall we go up

  231. again? And God says, yes, go up for tomorrow.

  232. You will have victory. Now we stop there with

  233. our text for the day. But there's a couple of

  234. things that I want you to see. So first of all,

  235. before we get into the actual application of

  236. it, I want you to realize that there are some

  237. battles that God literally calls us to. Things

  238. that you're actually supposed to stand up for

  239. that matter. Some things that we should say,

  240. I'm not going to be part of that. I'm not going

  241. to participate. You're on your own if you're

  242. going to do that. But I entreat you, please don't.

  243. It does not honor the Lord. There are moments

  244. when compromise is not faithfulness. But you

  245. can't say, okay, well, I'll come halfway with

  246. you. We'll do this. We'll do it my way. Or we'll

  247. avoid going too deep into this. We'll do a little

  248. bit of it. You can't do that. There are moments

  249. when somebody has to say, no, this is wrong.

  250. But there is another danger. And I submit to

  251. you that it probably more often occurs. Sometimes

  252. while we are standing up or fighting against

  253. evil, We can become so sure and convinced that

  254. we are right that we stop checking ourselves.

  255. We stop asking, as I fight this battle, as I

  256. stand up for what's right here, am I right? Not,

  257. am I right to fight? We already covered that.

  258. It's the right thing to do. But am I right as

  259. a person? Am I right by God? And the Israelites

  260. went up against Benjamin, as we see in this text,

  261. a perfect example, not right by God, and suffered

  262. day after day tens of thousands of losses. And

  263. so that ought to be a precedent for us to realize

  264. that you need to check yourself. Without getting

  265. too deeply onto that, we need to realize that

  266. the real problem here in this text is not that

  267. everybody's wrong, even though that appears to

  268. be the case. So the Israelites, when they're

  269. sinning against God, they're worshiping idols,

  270. they're not right. The Benjamites are protecting

  271. the guys who would have raped this man all night

  272. long and eventually did rape his concubine all

  273. night long and killed her, and they're protecting

  274. them. Nobody's right. There's nobody in the story,

  275. in the two sides of the battle, that are right

  276. by God. But I submit to you, that's not actually

  277. the problem. The problem is not that they're

  278. both wrong. That might be why they suffer so

  279. heavily, right? Because they suffer the losses.

  280. because they are in the wrong place. But the

  281. real problem is that they think they're right

  282. because they see that the other side is wrong.

  283. So when the Israelites come out against Gibeah,

  284. was there an atrocity? Yes, there was. Did that

  285. wickedness need to be removed from Israel? Yes,

  286. it did. And that's why they came out, allegedly.

  287. But I submit to you that similar atrocities were

  288. occurring all over the 11 tribes. That there

  289. were men there who were out to battle who had

  290. concubines, wives with no rights, at home that

  291. they were keeping. There were men who had come

  292. out there to battle who were falsely worshiping

  293. God. They were in evil. They were wicked to the

  294. core. But, you know, Gibeah is so bad because

  295. they did something wrong that we can unite and

  296. go and destroy them. That's the real problem.

  297. That they could find justification, to go and

  298. destroy them because they're wrong while themselves

  299. also being wrong. And you could reverse the other

  300. side of it. You could say Gibeah. Gibeah was

  301. right. Should they allow brothers in the kingdom

  302. of God, covenant brothers, to be destroyed? No,

  303. they should not allow the Gibeahites. How do

  304. you say that? The people from Gibeah. Let's just

  305. say that, right? Those people to be destroyed,

  306. they should defend them, especially because they

  307. have some really good warriors there who would

  308. fall on... Like my brother from Gibeah, I'm not

  309. going to let him die. He fought alongside me

  310. at the battle of so -and -so. And I stand up

  311. for him no matter what. I don't care if he did

  312. rape that woman all night long. Nobody's going

  313. to touch him. Him and I stood together in battle

  314. or whatever. So somehow or other, they justified

  315. defending these people who had committed this

  316. wicked crime because the people that were coming

  317. were coming against Israelites. They're saying,

  318. not against my family. Is my family wrong in

  319. this? Yeah, they're wrong, but I'll not let you

  320. touch my family. Because they were all part of

  321. a larger family, and those who were coming were

  322. also family. They were just family from a little

  323. further away. And so we wind up with a huge battle

  324. between two sides who essentially both think

  325. they're right, and they justify, they could know

  326. that they're not right with God, but they justify

  327. the battle and the action because the other side

  328. appears to be wrong. So then there's two applications

  329. out of this text. And the first one is I want

  330. to show you and I'm going to show it to you kind

  331. of a little tongue in cheek because it's how

  332. to do it, but don't ever do it. OK, so I'm going

  333. to show you how to do it, but don't ever do it.

  334. The process of spiritually becoming the judge,

  335. jury and executioner. Now on the surface, you're

  336. like, I don't ever want to do that. I don't want

  337. to be the spiritual judge. I don't want to be

  338. the spiritual jury. I don't want to be the spiritual

  339. executioner. Right. But in reality, in life,

  340. sometimes we're doing it. And so you need to

  341. sort it out and figure out, am I doing it? If

  342. it is, you repent and turn away from it. In Judges

  343. 20, we see Israel gathering together. They come

  344. together as one people. They hear what has happened.

  345. They ask, essentially, how did this evil happen?

  346. They get motivated. They ask then for Benjamin

  347. to deal with the problem, and they don't. Then

  348. later, they'll ask for Benjamin to actually give

  349. them the men so they can deal with the problem.

  350. Judges 20, verse 13 says, That's what they asked

    Judges 20:13

  351. for. Sounds reasonable, sounds righteous, sounds

  352. like justice. Benjamin says no. That begins then

  353. our first application. How to become the spiritual

  354. judge, juror, and executioner. There's a process.

  355. And it usually doesn't begin with murder or anything

  356. like that. It begins with self -righteousness.

  357. You think of yourself as right. So step one to

  358. becoming the spiritual judge, jury, and executioner

  359. is this. Sound right rather than worrying about

  360. being right. So we're in church on Sunday and

  361. we use words like baptism, sanctification, preaching.

  362. We quote verses from the Bible. We talk about...

  363. Good things that we do. Maybe we speak out an

  364. inspirational moment. We preach a sermon, whatever.

  365. But our lives, not right. We sound right, but

  366. then we're not right. So step one is to sound

  367. right because that's how you get people to rally.

  368. That's how you get people to agree with you.

  369. Yeah, he sounds right. That makes sense. We elevate

  370. our behavior by our intentions. And then we let

  371. our intentions kind of like sit in the background.

  372. But God looks at our intentions, meaning God

  373. judges our heart. So we say, I'm going to go

  374. and I'm going to give peace of my mind. I'm going

  375. to tell her. Or I'm going to get her kicked out

  376. of the church. That's what we start thinking.

  377. But our actual heart, our motivations behind

  378. that, that's all wrong. But God is not. If you

  379. say she did something wrong, he did something

  380. wrong, and now you're cutting them out or you're

  381. saying you've got to go on your own. I'm not

  382. going to help you. I don't want nothing to do

  383. with you anymore. You're pushing them away from

  384. you. And you're doing that out of a wrong heart.

  385. God sees the wrong heart. It doesn't matter if

  386. the reason, like the person was actually in sin,

  387. they did wickedness, whatever. They might be.

  388. You might say, I'm not going to be part of the

  389. wickedness that you're part of. But God is looking

  390. at your heart. And then you can say, well. Yeah,

  391. I did. I did cut them off or I did say that mean

  392. thing or whatever, but I didn't mean to hurt

  393. them. I was just trying to show them that they

  394. were wrong. Or you could say to somebody else

  395. who sees you being mean or vicious, why are you

  396. being like that? And you're like, well, you don't

  397. understand what happened. You know how bad they

  398. hurt my feelings, right? Or they came after my

  399. kid or they came after my friend or they came

  400. after my buddy, right? Or they came after me.

  401. And you can express that you have good reasons

  402. for why you're doing what you're doing. But God

  403. is looking at your heart. Being able to explain

  404. yourself because the other person is wrong does

  405. not make you righteous. Which is why when somebody

  406. does something wrong to you, there is literally

  407. no excuse to do something wrong back to them.

  408. Because if you're doing something wrong, it's

  409. still wrong. Once it comes out of you, your heart

  410. is in a messed up place. Being able to explain

  411. yourself does not necessarily make you righteous.

  412. Step one then would be to profess or to speak

  413. like you're right while not actually being right

  414. in yourself. Step two then is to do what the

  415. world knows is wrong while still claiming a connection

  416. to God. So, yeah, I'm doing this. Let's use the

  417. story for an example. Israel is wicked. They

  418. are idolatrous. They're synchronistic, which

  419. means they're adding other religions to... following

  420. God at best. And a lot of them were just cutting

  421. God out completely. They were taking concubines

  422. and condoning sin all over the place. But then

  423. when another evil looks bad enough, they all

  424. get together to point fingers, draw weapons,

  425. and start to kill people, right? These people

  426. still knew the name of Jehovah. They still knew

  427. who God was. He was the God who parted the river.

  428. He was the God who parted the sea. He was the

  429. God who sent the plagues. He was the God who

  430. gave the Ten Commandments. He was the God who

  431. struck down those who dishonored him. He's that

  432. God. And yet they claim the name of Jehovah,

  433. but they're living in daily wickedness. But then

  434. they unify to go and cut down Benjamin when Benjamin

  435. will not provide the bad guys so they can cut

  436. them down. It's a sobering warning that as a

  437. Christian, you can say, I am a follower of Jesus.

  438. But then you can be living in wickedness at the

  439. same time. I love Jesus as my Lord. A Lord is

  440. a person who tells you what to do when you do

  441. it. That's what a Lord is. If you say Jesus is

  442. your Lord and Jesus tells you to do something

  443. and you don't do it, that is a lie. And lies

  444. don't save people. And so that's what happens

  445. in Christianity when we think we are right and

  446. then... We call on the name of Jesus and we keep

  447. doing the things that we want to do or fulfilling

  448. our own desires. It's possible to have the right

  449. vocabulary, to say the right things about Jesus

  450. and actually have wrong behavior in your life.

  451. It's possible to say, I love God while refusing

  452. to obey God. Jesus said this in Matthew 7. He

  453. said, not everyone who saith unto me, Lord, Lord,

  454. will enter the kingdom of heaven. So he already

  455. knew in his day, in the midst of him being crucified,

  456. buried, resurrected, feeding the 5 ,000, feeding

  457. the 4 ,000, walking on water, calming storms,

  458. bringing Lazarus back to life. While all of that

  459. was going on, there were people who were saying,

  460. Lord, Lord, but they didn't actually have a Lord

  461. in Jesus. Calling ourselves God's people does

  462. not make everything we do work. It doesn't make

  463. everything we do righteous, and it doesn't make

  464. everything we do God's way. Then all of a sudden,

  465. you find a group of evildoers who can be differentiated

  466. from you. So we've got three steps so far. The

  467. first one was sound right rather than be right.

  468. The second one was speak it, speak the words,

  469. and you start doing what the world knows is wrong.

  470. So Christians are doing what the world knows

  471. is wrong, but you still speak the words and claim

  472. the connection to God. And then the third one

  473. is... You find somebody that you can, a group

  474. that somebody can hammer against. We got some

  475. really big groups like that in the world right

  476. now. And there are pastors who will be in the

  477. pulpit this morning. They'll preach against a

  478. certain political agenda. And their churches

  479. are growing. Because people want to hear that.

  480. They want to hear me stand up here and bash a

  481. certain thing that people don't agree with. Whatever

  482. it might be. And it doesn't even have to be in

  483. the Bible. Right? We can do that. In fact, I

  484. once had a woman accost me after service on a

  485. Sunday and said, next Sunday, you need to preach

  486. against smoking, smoking cigarettes. You need

  487. to preach against smoking cigarettes. And I said,

  488. well, first of all, why would I do that like

  489. ever? And she said, well, because a lot of people

  490. are dying from it. People are getting sick from

  491. it. People are getting addicted from it. It's

  492. a bad thing. It's an evil. And you need to preach.

  493. Your next sermon needs to be preaching against

  494. smoking. And I said, I'm sorry. I can tell you

  495. right now that ain't going to happen. I said,

  496. I might preach what the Bible says, you know,

  497. your body's a temple, that kind of thing. But

  498. the odds are I probably won't mention smoking

  499. at all because that's not even a very good example.

  500. That's taking those verses out of context. Now,

  501. should you smoke? Probably not. Could it be a

  502. sin? Almost certainly. But the Bible doesn't

  503. address it directly ever. And I'm not going to

  504. preach a sermon against it because the Bible

  505. never addresses it directly. Exactly. So we're

  506. going to let Jesus teach people those kinds of

  507. things, not me. That's not my job. And she wasn't

  508. very happy with me. And our relationship did

  509. go south from there. And then she eventually

  510. left the church. But the bottom line is, you

  511. can find a group of people to hammer. And then

  512. as you hammer them, other people who want to

  513. feel like they are in the right will jump on

  514. board with you and hammer them. Just like these

  515. guys were going after Gibeah. Just like these

  516. guys were going after Benjamin. And suddenly

  517. everybody has an enemy. And if we can have a

  518. common enemy, there was one couple a long time

  519. ago. that I was doing marriage counseling with,

  520. and marriage Bible study, I don't do counseling,

  521. I was doing marriage Bible study with them, and

  522. about two -thirds of the way through marriage

  523. Bible study, I realized they really weren't,

  524. you know, they weren't really on board, they

  525. really weren't doing the text, which we just,

  526. all we do is read the Bible, and what does it

  527. say, what does it mean, that kind of thing, and

  528. they really weren't with me. And then it blew

  529. up, and I found out that I had offended her.

  530. And I found out that similarly, at the same time,

  531. I had offended him. And they both decided, overnight,

  532. just like that, that they hated me. Just like

  533. that. One day we're working together, we're trying

  534. to figure out what the Bible says, and overnight

  535. they decided that they hated me. And guess what

  536. happened? No. Their marriage became fine. They

  537. no longer had any trouble in their marriage.

  538. Because now they had an enemy. They decided together

  539. that they became unified in attacking me. And

  540. they were fine. I said, I'm praying about that.

  541. I asked the Lord, what on earth? He said, you

  542. know what? You did it. You succeeded. You brought

  543. about peace in their marriage. All they needed

  544. was a common enemy. Think about the Pharisees,

  545. the Sadducees, Herod, Pilate, all of them. They

  546. were in constant political bickering all the

  547. time. And the first time they ever had peace

  548. was when they crucified Jesus. You don't need

  549. a common enemy. What you need is a relationship

  550. with the God of the universe. And he'll get you

  551. right. If you need a common enemy to go after,

  552. then you're probably more on the road to becoming

  553. a spiritual judge, jury, and executioner than

  554. you are a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  555. Jesus did not come to condemn, and nor should

  556. we. needs to ask, who is my enemy? Because sometimes

  557. the person that's facing you, sometimes a person

  558. who disagrees with you, sometimes a person who

  559. corrects you, they're not your enemy. Faithful

  560. are the wounds of a friend, scripture says. A

  561. faithful friend might hurt your feelings. They

  562. might tell you something that you don't really

  563. want to hear. They may say something that's hard

  564. to adjust to. But that very wound might then

  565. become an evidence of their love for you. The

  566. person will take the time to correct you when

  567. you're screwing up. There's somebody you should

  568. probably trust, not trust like you trust the

  569. Lord. Don't trust any humans like that, right?

  570. Because we all have our weaknesses. But if they're

  571. willing to talk to you and get you back on the

  572. right course, then they are of value to you in

  573. your life. The next step then is to consult God

  574. midstream to authorize what you have already

  575. decided to do. You notice that's what they did.

  576. They finally inquire to the Lord after they already

  577. were moving against Gibeah. And you can do that

  578. too. You can decide, I'm going to go, I'm going

  579. to attack this person, or I'm going to go on

  580. this course of action, ignoring this person,

  581. what they have to say, and then you can, along

  582. the way, ask God. And here's the funny thing,

  583. as we see in this text, God may say, go ahead

  584. and go. You got it in yourself already, a plan

  585. to do it, you're going to do it, go ahead and

  586. go. And I'm saying it like that way on purpose,

  587. because they win. back out and they lost 22 ,000

  588. men. And every one of those 22 ,000 men wished

  589. they had not gone to battle that day. And all

  590. their wives and all their children, probably

  591. even their concubines, and all their servants,

  592. every one of them, and all their would -be descendants

  593. for generations to come. And God said, go. And

  594. they went and they all died. 22 ,000 of them

  595. died. And sometimes God may let you do that.

  596. If you've decided to do what you're going to

  597. do anyway, regardless of whether or not God authorizes

  598. it, then God's going to say to you, all right,

  599. go ahead. Knowing that after you suffer some

  600. more, eventually you're going to turn back to

  601. God and say, okay, God, now what? And that's

  602. what God is waiting for. God is waiting for you

  603. to actually ask him, now what? And finally they

  604. do. They ask God whether to continue. And finally

  605. he says, yep, now you see what I've decided to

  606. do. We have to learn the difference between consulting

  607. God midstream of what we are already doing and

  608. seeing whether or not he's going to authorize

  609. it and asking God in advance whether we should

  610. do something. And the latter is permissible in

  611. the kingdom of God. And the former may be permissible,

  612. but it certainly is not profitable. Trust the

  613. Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own

  614. understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge

  615. him. Be not wise in thine own eyes. Get out of

  616. bed tomorrow morning and say, Lord, I don't know

  617. what the heck I'm doing here. Because that's

  618. the reality, isn't it? I'm just following you

  619. the best I know how. Leave me wherever you want

  620. me to go. And I'll not do it in my own strength.

  621. I'll do it in yours. And then I'll give you glory

  622. for it. Everybody pays in this story for the

  623. pride of the people who refuse to humble themselves.

  624. Who refuse to go to God and say, God, should

  625. we go up or not? But they're on both sides of

  626. the battle. They're on both sides of the battle.

  627. Once you've found that group of evildoers differentiated

  628. from you, you can feel fully authorized. You

  629. can complain against them. You can unite against

  630. them. And then you'll be perfectly fine. You

  631. may not be right by God, but you'll be fine for

  632. months or years even. You might be sitting here

  633. today because you think Christianity is so much

  634. better than those idiots over there at the mosque.

  635. Or at the temple. Or in their living rooms this

  636. morning streaming more TV. Now if that's your

  637. position, that's not right. Let Jesus sort that.

  638. Follow the Lord. Then, there is another action

  639. plan that is clearly laid out in this text. There's

  640. another action plan that's clearly laid out in

  641. this text. And you can go just the other way.

  642. Right. And the people of Gibeah, they decide

  643. essentially to stand up for something that they

  644. believe in. And in standing up for something

  645. that they believe in, they dismiss justice. They

  646. dismiss mercy. They dismiss humility. When in

  647. reality, we need all three. They come out and

  648. man, they do a good job of it, don't they? Those

  649. 26 ,000 men that kill. 40 plus thousand of the

  650. Israelites before they quit fighting. And all

  651. day long, both of those days, they were thinking

  652. to themselves, see, see, we're right. It doesn't

  653. matter how many of you there are. While they

  654. were defending the wicked. And you could be doing

  655. that same thing, sitting where you're sitting

  656. right now. There's wickedness in your life. There's

  657. something that you're doing that's not right.

  658. And all the while I'm preaching, you're saying

  659. to yourself, Ah, it's okay. Nobody knows about

  660. that. Or it's no big deal. It doesn't stop me

  661. from being faithful to God. Jesus came to die

  662. for all my sins, not just my sins of the past

  663. or the future, but my present sins too. And you're

  664. justifying not faithfully following the Lord.

  665. And if someone would start to call you on it,

  666. you might get your craw up a little bit. You

  667. might defend yourself. Just realize that when

  668. you do that, you might be defending yourself

  669. against the God of the universe. We were once

  670. objects of wrath, and we have no desire to be

  671. that now. So we can come to the point then where,

  672. just like they did, we turn the weapons at our

  673. disposal against an enemy who was never meant

  674. to be the enemy. Either somebody who was doing

  675. something wrong. And you start to judge them

  676. and you start to attack them. You say things

  677. that makes you feel better about the things that

  678. in your life that you're doing that are wrong.

  679. You're not coming humbly. You're not trying to

  680. constructively help them. You're not coming alongside

  681. them. You're not caring about them. Maybe you're

  682. not praying for them. By the way, the surest

  683. way to make sure there's a little mercy in your

  684. relationships is to pray first for the person.

  685. Pray for their genuine needs. And that'll help

  686. you find a little compassion when you do go to

  687. talk to them. Or you might be on the other side

  688. of it and say, yeah, I'm doing the wrong thing.

  689. and they don't like what I'm doing, and I don't

  690. want them to think of me. You get mad because

  691. they think of you a certain way, or they say

  692. a certain thing, or maybe they correct you, begin

  693. to get you going in the right direction, and

  694. you defend your wickedness. And the same thing

  695. can happen during a sermon. It happens during

  696. a Bible study, right? Sometimes it happens when

  697. we're praying. God is convicting you and bringing

  698. something out that you're doing, and you're saying

  699. back to God, no, God, that's no big deal. Yeah,

  700. I'm trying to fix that. And by the way, yeah,

  701. I'm trying to fix that is not an excuse. So,

  702. that brings us then to action plans, neither

  703. of which we want to be a part of. But notice

  704. then God says, in the middle of the text at a

  705. certain point, it's too late for reluctance now.

  706. There is another detail in Judges 20, after the

  707. first battle, after 22 ,000 men, then another

  708. 18 ,000, and only after they fall down before

  709. God, they weep. That's good. But think about

  710. how much better it would have been if humility

  711. had arrived before they went to battle. 40 ,000

  712. men. There is a kind of humility that comes before

  713. consequences. You need to hear this. I needed

  714. to hear this. There is a kind of humility that

  715. comes after consequences. which do you have?

  716. Do you have the kind of humility that says, God

  717. is in charge, and I want to do what God wants

  718. me to do, and I want to be right by God, I want

  719. to serve God, let God live in me, let God reign

  720. in my life, before you start to do things that

  721. don't honor God? Or do you wait until after you've

  722. done things that don't honor God, and God corrects

  723. you, and now you're humble? And you're like,

  724. oh, Lord, I knew all along that I need only you.

  725. Only you can sustain me, Lord. Praise you. Only

  726. you are God. I'm not God. But your actions hours

  727. before or days before were saying you are equally

  728. God. Because you were not coming humbly to the

  729. Lord before you set about on your course. Both

  730. types of humility like that are better than pride.

  731. It's better to be humble after you get chastised

  732. than it is to be prideful. It's better to be

  733. humble before you get chastised. It's best. One

  734. of those types of humility costs far less. You

  735. can learn humility from scripture like this one

  736. and others, or you can learn it from disaster.

  737. You can accept correction from God, or you can

  738. wait until your decisions produce consequences

  739. that you cannot undo. 40 ,000 men died, and they

  740. walked on the first 22 ,000 all day long while

  741. they fought again. wickedness in their hearts,

  742. not humble before God. You can bend your knee

  743. voluntarily, or eventually life may force you

  744. to your knees. The wise person chooses the first

  745. way, humility before destruction. The reality

  746. is that civil wars kill kingdom citizens. Israel

  747. was... not fighting to fulfill the boundaries

  748. of their kingdom. Realize this is the book of

  749. Judges. They're still supposed to be conquering

  750. the surrounding enemies, not taking them as wives.

  751. They're still supposed to be moving the borders

  752. back and finding the full land that God has given

  753. them. They have a 400 ,000 man army that instead

  754. is pitted completely to destroy one city. for

  755. one sinful act while they themselves are indulged

  756. in sinful acts so often. That same army could

  757. have expanded the territory to where it was supposed

  758. to get. They weren't conquering new territory

  759. even though God had commanded them to do that.

  760. They weren't fighting an invading army even though

  761. they have fought those time and again. By the

  762. way, throughout the book of Judges at this point,

  763. how many times has Israel been warred against?

  764. How many times have they been abused? How many

  765. times have their crops been stolen? And in all

  766. that time, how many times did they sum up an

  767. army of 400 ,000 men? Only a couple. And it took

  768. a powerful judge to do it. They are not advancing

  769. the kingdom in this fight. They are fighting

  770. themselves. Civil wars kill kingdom citizens.

  771. That principle is still true today. Every church

  772. conflict over anything at all, it doesn't matter

  773. what it is, never ever produces righteousness.

  774. When five or six people get their craw up about

  775. the pastor won't preach a sermon on smoking,

  776. or the pastor talks too long on Sunday, or the

  777. room color isn't right, or the carpeting, or

  778. the instruments, or the music is too loud, or

  779. it doesn't matter what it is, and people get

  780. together and they decide that they're upset,

  781. they get a poster child of a problem, those disagreements

  782. never bring about justice or righteousness. In

  783. fact, Every disagreement does not need an enemy.

  784. Every correction does not need a war. Sometimes

  785. the greatest victory is not defeating the person

  786. who disagrees with you. Sometimes the greatest

  787. victory is keeping the relationship with the

  788. person who disagrees with you. If you and I sat

  789. down, everybody in this room, every one of us,

  790. if we sat down and talked for a couple hours

  791. looking for something to disagree over, we'll

  792. find it. I guarantee it. Because I'm an opinionated

  793. person and I'm looking around this room and I

  794. see opinionated people. 100%. We would all find

  795. something if we sat down and worked it. You sit

  796. down with your wife and say, okay, let's talk

  797. about it. Let's find something to disagree with.

  798. You will find something that you think and he

  799. or she disagrees. And then you've got to either

  800. come to a conclusion where the two of you can

  801. work it out and figure out where your actual

  802. position is or one of you has to give up their

  803. preferences or you have to agree to disagree,

  804. which is not biblical. Every family argument

  805. does not produce justice. Every disagreement

  806. does not need an enemy. And every correction

  807. does not need a war. Get off your soapbox unless

  808. you are talking about Jesus and God's word. In

  809. fact, Proverbs 15 .1 says, A soft answer turns

  810. away wrath. James said it this way in chapter

  811. 3, The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace

  812. of them that make peace. There are people who

  813. know how to win arguments. Some of you will debate

  814. me under the table. But God calls us to become

  815. people who know how to make peace. Blessed are

  816. the peacemakers. And that brings us then to a

  817. conclusion. What they didn't have was a king.

  818. I'm not talking about a human king. They had

  819. God as king, and then they gave that up. They

  820. quit having God as king. We are called to one

  821. king, one standard, one way. Judges is ultimately

  822. a book about what happens when Israel does not

  823. have righteous leadership. We have righteous

  824. leadership. We have Jesus Christ, the Son of

  825. God. We have God the Father, God the Son, God

  826. the Holy Spirit. Literally, we have the definition

  827. of righteous leadership. Again and again, the

  828. big problem of Judges comes out. In those days,

  829. there was no king in Israel. Every man did what

  830. was right in his own eyes. Except there was a

  831. king. It was God. And the reason there was no

  832. king that was God was because every man was doing

  833. what was right in his own eyes. It's not like

  834. God stopped being king, and then they started

  835. doing what was right in their own eyes. God was

  836. king, and they stepped away from him. They stopped

  837. following God, stopped letting God be king. And

  838. they began to do what was right in their own

  839. eyes. And it has led them to this point, the

  840. worst probably point in the history of God's

  841. people in the promised land, where they're not

  842. being killed by enemies. That was terrible in

  843. the Philistines. That's terrible. When all the

  844. other tribes gathered together and formed an

  845. army, there was camels as far as the horizon.

  846. That was terrible. But when it's Israelites killing

  847. Israelites, that's terrible. When it was the

  848. United States Civil War, it's said to be the

  849. most. Damaging war in the history of America.

  850. Because everybody that died was an American.

  851. And some history buffs will escalate that number

  852. far beyond the actual track number, which is

  853. like 600 ,000. And they think in reality it was

  854. maybe millions who died in the Civil War. And

  855. it was Americans killing an American. And everybody

  856. that died pretty much was an American. This is

  857. what happens. When people do what's right in

  858. their own eyes, rather than doing what God calls

  859. us to. Benjamin did what seemed right to Benjamin.

  860. Israel did what seemed right to Israel. Everybody

  861. had a justification. Everybody had a grievance.

  862. Everybody had a reason. But the goal is not for

  863. everybody to become better at defending their

  864. own version of righteousness. To say, well, I'm

  865. going to learn what the Bible says so I can be

  866. right. And then people will think I'm right.

  867. You should just leave off the last part. Learn

  868. what the Bible says so that God can make you

  869. right. Don't worry about whether other people

  870. think you're right or not. There's only one advantage

  871. in that. If people think you're right, they might

  872. be a little more likely to listen to you about

  873. Jesus. That would be advantageous. They might

  874. be a little more likely to glorify your Father

  875. when Jesus comes again. That would be advantageous.

  876. But the truth is, all you've got to do is speak

  877. for Jesus and let them decide whether or not

  878. they're going to listen. The goal is to come

  879. under God's standard of righteousness. We need

  880. authority in the right places. We need accountability

  881. practiced by all. If someone you know is in sin,

  882. you go to them in kindness and speak with them

  883. about it. Go to them in peace. I get it. It's

  884. going to put you out of your comfort zone. You

  885. might be frustrated. You might be upset. You

  886. might want to go in strained because you feel

  887. like, oh, I feel terrible that I have to have

  888. this conversation. But the problem is, that's

  889. you being reluctant. You're only feeling that

  890. way because it's you being reluctant to do what

  891. God commanded you to do, which was go and show

  892. them their sins so that they can repent. So it

  893. has nothing to do with their sin, but you'll

  894. go, feel it all consternated, all upset, all

  895. frustrated, right? And you'll get mad all over

  896. them, sloppy. Say it wrong because you're frustrated

  897. because you have to do what it is that God called

  898. you to do. Whose problem is that anyway? We need

  899. humility. We need repentance. We need truth.

  900. We need mercy. And ultimately, we need one king.

  901. Not me, not you, not our group, not our feelings.

  902. One king, Jesus Christ. There is one king and

  903. one standard of righteousness. There is one way

  904. we receive that righteousness. Not by you doing

  905. better today than you did yesterday. That's not

  906. how that works. Not by proving that we are better

  907. than somebody else. That's not how that works.

  908. We receive the righteousness through faith in

  909. Jesus Christ. Even the righteousness, the Bible

  910. says in Romans 3, of God, which is by faith of

  911. Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that

  912. believe. That changes the way we fight. Because

  913. when I know that my righteousness was received

  914. from Jesus, then I don't have to manufacture

  915. righteousness by defeating you or anyone else.

  916. Let me say it this way. If you're spending any

  917. portion of your time thinking about whether or

  918. not somebody else is wrong, you're missing. Your

  919. purpose in life, which is to become right yourself,

  920. to walk with Jesus. You don't have time. Now,

  921. should we also be concerned about other people?

  922. We need warriors. We do. We need to take the

  923. gospel. We need to take right living to other

  924. people. We need to show up in the midst of people's

  925. trials and lead them to a life that is Jesus

  926. Christ and help them. Maybe bring food. Bring

  927. support like from the police or from somebody.

  928. Get them out of a difficult situation, whatever.

  929. We need warriors. But we need humble warriors.

  930. We need people willing to stand. But we need

  931. people willing to kneel first. We need people

  932. willing to advance. But we only want the advancement

  933. in the direction that God has commanded. We need

  934. people willing to confront sin. But we also need

  935. people willing to repent of their own sin. We

  936. need people willing to fight. But we need people

  937. who know what is worth fighting for. And we need

  938. people who don't just want to win. We need people

  939. who want to help somebody else find the way home.

  940. God has given each one of us the heart of a lion.

  941. In getting saved, your regenerated heart became

  942. the heart of a lion. And with that heart of a

  943. lion, you can conquer every little sin, everything

  944. that ever held you back, your flesh, your crazy

  945. mind that goes all over the place sometimes or

  946. seeks after things that aren't good for you.

  947. Your heart can reign over it all. Your heart

  948. has the heart of a lion, the kind of heart that

  949. can create universes. They can destroy difficulties.

  950. They can move mountains. You have the heart of

  951. a lion. And so you want to fight. But you're

  952. called to humility to the God of the universe

  953. first. The next time you think about saying something

  954. that sounds a little bit mean, don't say to yourself,

  955. well, it may sound a little bit mean, but I've

  956. got, you know, there's a reason for that. Just

  957. realize it's just mean. It just actually is mean.

  958. It doesn't just sound a little bit mean. It actually

  959. is mean. And you're called to gentleness and

  960. kindness and goodness and self -control, which

  961. are all fruits of the Spirit. You can't produce

  962. them, but by embracing God through the spiritual

  963. disciplines and His Word and spending time with

  964. Him, those things grow in you. The next time

  965. you see somebody who's doing something wrong

  966. and you feel compelled to correct it, a little

  967. bitterness in your voice might do the trick.

  968. They'll slam a pot or a pan or a door, right?

  969. Or turn your back on them. Or give them what

  970. for? You should have realized those are all weapons.

  971. And they are given to you for your use, but they

  972. are not meant to be turned inward. You know who

  973. needs you to kick his butt super bad, like every

  974. day? Satan. You know who needs you to step on

  975. his throat, to crush his skull? Every demon,

  976. evil spirit that ever rose, fell, would be a

  977. better verb there, right? That ever came to walk

  978. the earth. And your heart of a lion, that's what

  979. it's for. Don't you turn the weapons that God

  980. has given you against your loved ones, against

  981. the church. Don't be divided. Wrath of man never

  982. brings about righteousness. Come in love. And

  983. bring peace. Jesus said, my peace I give you.

  984. Not as the world gives, but forever. In this

  985. world, you will have trouble. But fear not, for

  986. I have overcome the world. I'm going to close

  987. with an illustration and I'm done. The United

  988. States of America Civil War, I mentioned it earlier

  989. on. The president... During the Civil War and

  990. immediately after for a short time. No, I got

  991. that backwards. The president at the beginning

  992. and throughout the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln.

  993. I'm not a historian, but I'm going to quote him

  994. anyway. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln gave an inaugural

  995. address. And he was addressing the fact that

  996. the United States of America was fighting against

  997. the United States of America. And in the end

  998. of his inaugural address, he used this phrase.

  999. He said that they would fight the fight, that

1000. they will win the war, that they will reunite

1001. the nation. And I'm paraphrasing that part. But

1002. then he said this. He said, with malice toward

1003. none, with charity for all. And that is how you

1004. and I need to learn to fight. Because the goal

1005. is not victory over what someone is doing or

1006. what you don't like or what's bothering you.

1007. The goal is peace. Peace that passes understanding.

1008. Peace that leads to an eternity with God in heaven

1009. forever. Before you fight the fight, make sure

1010. that you're fighting the right way. And don't

1011. turn the weapons that you have, whatever you

1012. have at your disposal, against those who you

1013. should be loving. A legitimate cause does not

1014. guarantee a righteous response. Instead, humbly

1015. come before the Lord. Is this my fight? How will

1016. I fight it? How far am I meant to go? And then

1017. do what he tells you. I ask the praise team to

1018. come forward. And lead us in exposing him. But

1019. as we are singing today, maybe the Lord is impressed

1020. upon you. Maybe you've been. It's the very thing.

1021. You've turned your weapons against your loved

1022. ones or against the church, these people that

1023. you know, and you realize that's not meant to

1024. be those weapons. We're defending you. We're

1025. defending the church. We're defending the kingdom.

1026. We're attacking the enemy that actually is the

1027. enemy, which is not a community, ever. Repent.

1028. repent and humbly come before your God and just

1029. say, okay, God, from now on, when I see something

1030. that needs to be dealt with, I want to deal with

1031. it in you, by your strength, by your methods,

1032. and that's the only way. Maybe God has come to

1033. you and said you have some sin, something that's

1034. in your heart. It's wickedness. And you've kept

1035. it. You've held on to it. You even defended it

1036. to him over the years. Maybe you've begged him

1037. to forgive it over and over and over again. And

1038. God is now saying, repent. repent of that thing

1039. and be done with it. Repent and turn to me. Repent

1040. doesn't just mean turn from a sin. It means turn

1041. to God. Think differently now. Now I'm turned

1042. to God. Because if you turn from one sin, you're

1043. likely to just turn to another one. But if you

1044. turn from sin and turn to God, then that's different.

1045. So you know what that thing is and you've been

1046. defending it, stop it. Say no more to that. I'm

1047. done defending it. I'm going to submit it to

1048. the Lord and let him deal with it. Or maybe the

1049. Lord's calling you to start a ministry or go

1050. talk to somebody specific about Jesus or whatever

1051. it might be. He's saying, whom will I send? And

1052. you say, okay, Lord, you can send me. I don't

1053. know what that's going to look like, but you

1054. can send me. And you let him know that today.

1055. Maybe you need this to be your church home. Maybe

1056. you need to be baptized. Maybe you need to be

1057. and serve whatever. You make your decision publicly

1058. so that God can support you, so that God can

1059. come out and Pour on the resources. And you and

1060. everyone else in the world. As we sing this song,

1061. the Lord is speaking to you and wants you to

1062. respond. And you come forward, share with me.

1063. Otherwise, you just sing and give God the glory.

1064. Right? Stand and sing with me. But that thy blood

1065. was shed for me. That'll get it done. That was

1066. enough. Come to me, O Lamb of God, I come. You're

1067. here today and you're giving your life to Jesus

1068. Christ for the first time right now. In your

1069. heart, you still got pride? You say, yes, Lord.

1070. And then you come to me, and we'll pray together

  1071. right now.
