  1. ashes where there was a flame truth is that you're

  2. not forgotten because christ knows your name

  3. Until you're standing in the dark And there's

  4. a shake that's growing Jews, the preparation

  5. day was the day where some things got taken care

  6. of so that the next day could be focusing on

  7. God. I do think that's sometimes what we sort

  8. of forget to do. So Sundays are our day to focus

  9. on God, and we forget that Saturday is the day

  10. to get some things knocked out to focus on God.

  11. For me, my day, I work a lot of times all day

  12. on Sunday, and so I take Wednesday 6 p .m. to

  13. Thursday 6 p .m., and I have had this experience

  14. poignantly. where 5 .30 p .m. on a Wednesday,

  15. I am rushing to get some things knocked out before

  16. 6 p .m. on Wednesday. I can stop doing work stuff

  17. and focus on the Lord for that 24 hours. It goes

  18. all the way back to Egypt, where the Lord was

  19. raining, after they came out of Egypt, the Lord

  20. was raining manna down. Manna means, what is

  21. it? So there was some stuff falling from the

  22. sky or appearing on the ground, and they would

  23. collect it up and they would make food out of

  24. it. And because that collecting up was work,

  25. then the day before the Sabbath, they were supposed

  26. to collect up double. If they collected up double

  27. on any other day, it would go bad. It would rot.

  28. It would get bugs in it and that kind of thing.

  29. But on the day before the Sabbath, they were

  30. supposed to collect double, and that way they

  31. wouldn't have to work on the Sabbath. Okay? Go

  32. back to Egypt then, all the way back to Egypt,

  33. when the destroyer angel was going to come through

  34. and kill all the firstborns, they were told to

  35. slaughter a lamb and then to put its blood on

  36. the... beside their door, the doorpost of their

  37. house, and that the angel would not come through

  38. and destroy their firstborn because of the blood

  39. of the lamb that marked their house. So the day

  40. before that, they had to slaughter the lamb and

  41. do all the things they were supposed to do in

  42. order to be prepared for that blood on the post

  43. that would protect them from that death, right?

  44. So the concept of preparation is not really not

  45. understood by us. Let's say you have a job interview

  46. tomorrow at 8 a .m. You're probably going to

  47. do some things today to be prepared for that.

  48. Let's say you're taking the SAT in the morning

  49. tomorrow at 8 a .m. You're probably going to

  50. do some things today to be prepared for that.

  51. Go to bed at a decent time, eat right, drink

  52. plenty of water, things like that. Make sure

  53. you get up a little early, that kind of thing.

  54. So the concept of being prepared is not foreign

  55. to us, but for some reason we don't think to

  56. apply it to the moment when we're going to put

  57. our total focus on the Lord. And we should. And

  58. that's a concept that they understood. So Jesus

  59. is about to be crucified. And he is the lamb.

  60. We'll come back to that later. But he is the

  61. perfect sacrifice. And preparations needed to

  62. be made for that. They did have the instigation

  63. of the Lord's Supper, as we celebrate it now,

  64. was done before he was arrested. They did have

  65. a Passover meal. And it may have been the Passover

  66. meal or it may have been just part of the festival

  67. of that week. We don't know for sure. So what

  68. we don't know for sure historically is whether

  69. Jesus was crucified on the preparation day or

  70. not. But whether he was crucified on the preparation

  71. day, which is the day that all the lambs were

  72. slain, right? Or whether he was done crucified

  73. during the Passover. Either way, it's clear that

  74. he was the lamb and that his sacrifice was the

  75. preparation for our salvation. Grab your Bibles

  76. if you would. We're going to just look at a very

  77. short section of verses today as we lead up to

  78. the resurrection Sunday. And this is sort of

  79. resurrection Sunday today, but you'll understand

  80. this meaning a little bit later when I mention

  81. it. But next Sunday is a high resurrection day.

  82. Okay, you'll get that term in a minute. So grab

  83. your Bibles if you would. Give me a who to holler

  84. amen as we go to Luke chapter 23. Thank you for

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  85. being with me today. This is God's Word. We are

  86. focused on Him as we are focused on it. Luke

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  87. chapter 23, beginning in verse 50. I'll be reading

  88. from the New American Standard Version. It is

  89. just six verses, seven verses, sorry, 50 through

  90. 56. It says, And behold, a man named Joseph,

  91. who was a member of the council, a good and righteous

  92. man. And that's the whole of verse 50. So Joseph

  93. is called a member of the council, so we know

  94. that means, and we know historically it's supported

  95. that he was a member of the Sanhedrin. Now the

  96. Sanhedrin were the people who voted to crucify

  97. Jesus. They were the leaders of the Jews. They

  98. were composed primarily of Pharisees and Sadducees.

  99. And so they would come together and they would

  100. decide all the governmental matters of the Jews.

  101. And they collectively voted to crucify Jesus.

  102. Now the trial was a farce. It was an illegal

  103. trial. It happened overnight and they were not

  104. allowed to have trials when the son was down.

  105. So that made it an illegal trial. They also enlisted

  106. Herod and Pilate and people like that to have

  107. an additional trial because they couldn't technically

  108. crucify him and all of that was done illegally.

  109. They trumped up witnesses against him to try

  110. to get them to agree on two things that they

  111. had seen him do that was sin and they couldn't

  112. find any two is the bottom line. And then ultimately

  113. he admitted that he was God in the flesh using

  114. some symbolism, but he admitted that he was God

  115. in the flesh, and that is what they said they

  116. would crucify him for. But when they took him

  117. before the Roman government, that was not the

  118. accusation. It was that he stirred up trouble

  119. and claimed to be the king of the Jews, contrary

  120. to Caesar being king. So that was what he was

  121. crucified for as far as the Romans were concerned.

  122. So Joseph was a man who was a member of the council.

  123. Notice it says that he was a good and righteous

  124. man. It means he did things right. Now, I submit

  125. to you that if he's a member of the council,

  126. right away, if you haven't read any further,

  127. and he voted to crucify Jesus, that would not

  128. be a right thing. Because Jesus was an innocent

  129. man. So you notice then it goes on in the next

  130. verse, and it says, and it's parenthetical, which

  131. means it has a left parenthesis in my Bible,

  132. verse 51. It says, he had not consented to their

  133. plan and action. A man from Arimathea, a city

  134. of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom

  135. of God. We now know that he was a believer and

  136. that he did not take part in the vote or if he

  137. voted, he voted against. They didn't have to

  138. have a unanimous vote to crucify or to send him

  139. to the Roman government to be crucified. So he

  140. might have been there and voted against. We don't

  141. know for sure. Or he might not have voted at

  142. all. He might not have been present. Since it

  143. was an illegal trial and he was a good and righteous

  144. man, I'm going to say that most logically he

  145. probably wasn't there. Right? Because he knew

  146. it was an illegal trial. A good and righteous

  147. man would not be there and participate in the

  148. Sanhedrin overnight when he knows that that's

  149. an illegal trial. So that makes sense to me.

  150. But notice that that parenthetical statement

  151. has a purpose. Because if Joseph was a good and

  152. righteous man and participated in what was going

  153. on, that's a contradiction. Right? even though

  154. he had a duty to participate in the Sanhedrin,

  155. even though he had a duty to show up for their

  156. processes and things like that, if he participated

  157. in that and crucified a righteous man, an innocent

  158. man in Jesus, then that would be a contradiction.

  159. So just hold on to that thought for a moment

  160. and we'll come back to it. We're now in verse

  161. 52. This man went to Pilate and asked for the

  162. body of Jesus. So what we now see happening here

  163. is this good and righteous man who did not vote.

  164. either voted against or did not vote in the choice

  165. to crucify Jesus, goes and asks for Jesus' body.

  166. Now this is problematic because whoever comes

  167. and asks for Jesus' body to honor Jesus is putting

  168. themselves in a line of fire. Okay? It could

  169. be a disciple of Jesus. We already know that

  170. the Jews made the argument that maybe they'll

  171. steal his body. and fake his resurrection, because

  172. he said he would come back to life, and it was

  173. funny that the Jews recognized that, but he said,

  174. maybe they'll steal his body and fake his resurrection.

  175. So of course they're watching to see who comes

  176. to claim Jesus' body, because if it's a disciple,

  177. then they can deal with him. If it's somebody

  178. that's going to continue to spread the message

  179. of Jesus, then they can deal with him. So Joseph

  180. sticking his neck out like that is significant.

  181. So then we go on to verse 52. He went to Pilate

  182. and asked for the body of Jesus, verse 53, and

  183. he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth.

  184. So he's not really preparing it for burial, but

  185. he's giving it some respect. The linen cloth

  186. is a significant thing. And he laid him in a

  187. tomb cut into the rock where no one had ever

  188. slain. You with me, Kishon? Can you repeat back

  189. that last verse? Okay, I'll say it again. Okay,

  190. here we go. And it was the prep... the preparation

  191. day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. Was

  192. that it? No, it was not, actually. The first

  193. I had just said was, and he took it down and

  194. wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a

  195. tomb cut into the rock where no one had ever

  196. lain. That was the verse that we were on. Okay,

  197. so we're paying attention now. We're all with

  198. me, right? I might call you out. You never know.

  199. Stranger things have happened. All right, the

  200. point is, he's taking care of the body. He puts

  201. him in the tomb. Now, elsewhere in the other,

  202. this account, by the way, is present in all four

  203. Gospels. We're just looking at one. But elsewhere

  204. in the Gospel, we're told that that tomb actually

  205. belonged to Joseph. That means Joseph was a wealthy

  206. man. That means he had a lot to lose. You may

  207. think you've got a lot to lose. He was a wealthy

  208. man. He was also a ruler in the Sanhedrin. So

  209. he was up in the ranks. Right? He had a public

  210. reputation to be preserved. So that makes it

  211. even more dangerous that he came out. And then

  212. he puts the body of Jesus in his own tomb, a

  213. tomb in which no one had ever been laid. This

  214. is a matter of respect what he does here. The

  215. body is not really properly prepared, but it's

  216. a matter of respect. Now 54, and it was the preparation

  217. day and the Sabbath was about to begin. So as

  218. we talked about on the preparation day, there

  219. were certain work that had to be completed before

  220. the next day when their focus would be completely

  221. on God. They couldn't harvest. They couldn't

  222. go buy stuff at the store. They couldn't walk

  223. longer than a certain distance. Now that's not

  224. necessarily laid out in Scripture, but it was

  225. part of their oral tradition. So in order to

  226. follow the rules that the Pharisees and the Sanhedrin

  227. had given them. Now who were they again? The

  228. Pharisees and the Sanhedrin. Their leaders were

  229. the Pharisees and Sadducees formed the Sanhedrin.

  230. So in order to follow the Pharisees and the Sadducees

  231. who were teaching everybody the rules. They had

  232. to follow the rules and could only do so much

  233. on the day before the Sabbath rest. Okay? So

  234. Joseph of Arimathea, who was a good and righteous

  235. man, had to follow the same rules. So if he wanted

  236. to take care of this with Jesus, he couldn't

  237. wait to the Sabbath. He had to do it now in preparation.

  238. He had to take a risk. He had to step out. He

  239. had to risk everything that he had and do it

  240. now. So they go, they take Jesus' body, and they

  241. put it in the tomb on the preparation day. 55.

  242. Now the women who had come with him out of Galilee

  243. followed after. So we've got these ladies. They've

  244. come a long way. They've been following Jesus.

  245. They've walked a lot. They've talked. They've

  246. listened. They've sat at his feet. They understand.

  247. They heard him say he would be crucified, buried,

  248. and resurrected. They were present for the teachings

  249. of Jesus. And they followed Joseph of Arimathea

  250. as he moves his body to the tomb. Which means

  251. now what? So this is a blessing for next Sunday

  252. because it means they know where the tomb is.

  253. They didn't accidentally go to another tomb.

  254. They saw his body be placed in the tomb. The

  255. women who had come with him out of Galilee followed

  256. after and they saw the tomb and how his body

  257. was laid. Then 56. And they returned. So the

  258. women go back and they returned and prepared

  259. spices and perfume. So this is all on the preparation

  260. day. Not the Sabbath. This is work that they

  261. could not have reasonably done on the Sabbath.

  262. Okay? So on the preparation day, they prepared

  263. the spices and the perfumes. And it says, on

  264. the Sabbath, they rested according to the commandment.

  265. Okay? So they followed the rules. Now, the oral

  266. traditions that were added on, things like if

  267. you came to the end of the Sabbath and found

  268. a pin in your garment that you worked all day

  269. and you needed to repent, you were unclean, that's

  270. not biblical. Exactly how many steps you're allowed

  271. to take on the Sabbath day, that's not actually

  272. biblical. You're just told that you're not allowed

  273. to work. You're supposed to honor God on the

  274. Sabbath. The day that you mark out to honor God

  275. needs to be about honoring God. And so anything

  276. additional would have been sin. If they prepared

  277. the spices on the Sabbath, that would have been

  278. sin. You understand? All right. So there's a

  279. number of things to see throughout this text.

  280. And I have them. I tried to order them the best

  281. I could to try to make the most sense for me,

  282. whether it does for you or not. And if only one

  283. of them jumps out at you and makes a life -changing

  284. sense, then we'll be doing really great, okay?

  285. So the first of those is to notice that Jesus

  286. is the true Passover lamb. Regardless of whether

  287. he was slain at the same time as the representative

  288. Passover lambs, which they slew every year during

  289. the Passover, right? We talked about what that

  290. represents. Whether that was done on the preparation

  291. day or not, he was slain for the sins of mankind.

  292. He is the lamb to end all lambs and takes away

  293. the sin of the world. Now, you read this text

  294. that we just read and you're like, I don't necessarily

  295. know that I get that out of the text, right?

  296. You can hear them in these texts. I'm just giving

  297. you snippets here, but you can hear them in these

  298. texts and you can study more on it if you want.

  299. In 1 Peter 3, 18 to 19, it says, with the precious

  300. blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish

  301. and without spot. So this verse, which I just

  302. read a part of it to you, ties directly to the

  303. Passover requirements. Lambs had to be perfect,

  304. had to have no defect. And Jesus fulfills that

  305. as a sinless and pure sacrifice. A final once

  306. and for all sacrifice. In Hebrews 9, 12, and

  307. 26, and again I'm just giving you pieces, by

  308. his own blood he entered in once into the holy

  309. place having obtained eternal redemption. He

  310. appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of

  311. himself, it says in 26. So this sacrifice was

  312. not repeated like the Old Testament sacrifices.

  313. There won't be another Jesus coming to sacrifice

  314. himself. It's just one time. And the Old Testament

  315. sacrifices don't need to be repeated anymore

  316. because Jesus took care of it. It's done. One

  317. sacrifice completely sufficient. Then substitution

  318. clearly explains, 2 Corinthians 5 .21 says, for

  319. he, that's Jesus, I'm sorry, that's God, hath

  320. made him, that's Jesus, to be sin for us who

  321. knew no sin. This shows that Jesus was sinless,

  322. yet he takes our place to bear the sins. Christ

  323. is our Passover lamb, 1 Corinthians 5 .7, for

  324. even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.

  325. Now that's pretty blunt, isn't it? So we're getting

  326. the idea that Jesus Christ was the once and for

  327. all sacrifice and the Passover lamb. This directly

  328. connects Jesus to Passover. Directly. There's

  329. no question that Jesus is the Passover lamb.

  330. Just like the lamb protected Israel from judgment,

  331. Jesus' sacrifice saves us from God's wrath. Let

  332. me give you one more, in case you're thinking

  333. the end of the story might somehow be different.

  334. Revelation 5 .12. Worthy is the lamb that was

  335. slain. That's the song in heaven. That's the

  336. chant, if you will. Worthy is the lamb that was

  337. slain. Even in eternity and for all time, Jesus

  338. will always be identified as the lamb, the one

  339. slain for redemption. There is no question. It's

  340. a textual proof. I get that. But if you're a

  341. Christian and you're in the room, that should

  342. be easy for you. But even then, realize that

  343. those writers are multiple different people from

  344. multiple different societies, and it's all pulled

  345. together, one theme, Jesus Christ proven to be

  346. the once and for all sacrificial lamb. They were

  347. waiting on that. They were waiting for a sacrificial

  348. lamb that would solve it. I mean, you can't just

  349. keep killing lambs every year forever, right?

  350. That's not good enough. And they also knew that

  351. a month after they killed the lamb, that they

  352. had sinned. We kind of knew that, right? Let

  353. him who has no sin cast the first stone. And

  354. how many Pharisees and high priests were still

  355. standing there after Jesus said that? No, they

  356. all walked away. We all know that we have sin.

  357. Inherently, you know that you've done things

  358. that God would not appreciate, that God would

  359. not send you to do. So, we know what waiting

  360. for the kingdom of God is like. The kingdom of

  361. God is that person, place, and thing in which

  362. God reigns, right? And this is, remember, Joseph

  363. was waiting for the kingdom of God. So we know

  364. what that feels like. If you're here and you're

  365. a Christian, if you accepted Jesus Christ as

  366. your Lord and Savior, you realize like in the

  367. world, things are not going great. Politicians

  368. not making great decisions, local governors,

  369. police, criminals, our family members sometimes,

  370. your brother, your sister, your kids, people

  371. are not making great decisions. I mean, there's

  372. an old saying that says the world's going to

  373. hell in a handbasket. And was there ever a truer

  374. saying? I mean, it's pretty clear that there's

  375. a lot of bad stuff going on in the world. And

  376. yet I am waiting expectantly for the next coming

  377. of Christ at which all that will be done. I think

  378. back to Uncle Tom's Cabin. Uncle Tom's Cabin

  379. was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and Abraham

  380. Lincoln would later call her the woman who started

  381. the Civil War, the little woman who wrote the

  382. book that started the Civil War. And at the end

  383. of that book, Uncle Tom is a slave, and he's

  384. laying on a barge, and he's being shipped down

  385. the river toward the Gulf of Mexico, and he doesn't

  386. believe he'll ever be back. He believes he'll

  387. die there. He's going to a slave master who is

  388. known to kill slaves over time, to work them

  389. to death, literally, and he thinks he won't live.

  390. And he's laying on the barge at the end of that

  391. book, and he's crying. He's weeping. He's bawling

  392. like a baby. He's a big dude, strong, and he's

  393. bawling like a baby. And Harriet Beecher Stowe

  394. writes this. She says, but he's not crying for

  395. himself. He's not crying for being separated

  396. from his family. He'll never see his wife or

  397. kids again because he had a wife and kids who

  398. were also in slavery. He'll never see them again.

  399. He's not crying for the pain that he had suffered.

  400. But he was crying realizing that the people around

  401. him would never know the satisfaction, the joy,

  402. or the eternal life of dying and going to heaven.

  403. That he was going to go down there and his death

  404. was assured and after he died, he would spend

  405. eternity in heaven while they spent eternity

  406. in hell. And that concept was enough to wake

  407. up a nation. And the Civil War maybe didn't begin

  408. specifically because of that book. But the idea

  409. is still present. We know what it's like to wait

  410. for the kingdom of God amidst difficulty and

  411. troubles when details do not line up. We know

  412. what it means to... let that waiting drive our

  413. actions. If you're a Christian and you don't

  414. know what it means to let I'm waiting on Jesus

  415. drive your actions, I want you to rethink. That's

  416. what it means to repent. You rethink your life.

  417. Tomorrow, when you get out of bed, if Jesus is

  418. coming again tomorrow, which is entirely possible,

  419. then what should your tomorrow morning look like?

  420. And that's the kind of life you need to lead.

  421. You need to lead the life that is waiting on

  422. the kingdom of God to come in fullness. While

  423. it already exists inside you, are you a person

  424. in whom Jesus lives? Because if so, what does

  425. that house look like? What are the actions that

  426. are driven by the fact that we know that the

  427. kingdom of God is coming in fullness and in fact

  428. is already present in me, in you, and in the

  429. space between us as the church? Like Joseph of

  430. Arimathea, we know what it means to let our expectations

  431. of the kingdom of God drive our actions, and

  432. here it is, even at cost. Jesus said, count the

  433. cost. Does a man begin to build a large structure

  434. or take an army out against another army without

  435. considering whether he may complete the structure

  436. or defeat the army? No, that's foolishness, that

  437. all may mock him. Some years ago, Sherry and

  438. I went up to Frankenmuth and walked over there

  439. in Frankenmuth in Michigan. While we were there,

  440. we took a little ride down the river. They have

  441. a ride down the river, and you can hear about

  442. the history of the town. And on the side of the

  443. town, there's a mill, the foundation of a mill,

  444. and the beginnings of the walls of the mill.

  445. And the man who began to build the mill, a beautiful

  446. structure made of beautiful block stone, who

  447. began to build it, ran out of money before he

  448. could finish it. And on that boat ride, still,

  449. it's been a hundred years since he started building

  450. that mill. A hundred years. They still mention

  451. his name every time you ride down the river.

  452. They still talk about how he foolishly decided

  453. to build a building. And didn't have enough money

  454. to complete it. Jesus said, you want to follow

  455. me? Count the cost. And we fully understand what

  456. it means to expect the kingdom of God to come

  457. in its fullness at any moment. And to let that

  458. drive our actions at any cost. Are you wealthy?

  459. Your wealth might be the cost. Are you healthy?

  460. Your health might be the cost. Are you smart?

  461. Your smarts might be the cost. Are you in a loving

  462. relationship with another person? Your loving

  463. relationship might be the cost. What could the

  464. cost be? Well, we're ready to pay that cost,

  465. whatever it is, because we are living in expectation

  466. of the kingdom of God. Notice that that parenthetical

  467. statement about Joseph, he was a good and righteous

  468. man, it said, but he was not consenting to the

  469. crucifixion of Christ. And I submit to you, if

  470. you lived in Jesus' day, in order to be a good

  471. and righteous man, you would have had to not

  472. be consenting to the crucifixion of Jesus. That's

  473. a real problem for the crowd. Shouted crucify

  474. him, crucify him, isn't it? Because that means

  475. amongst that crowd there were two kinds of people.

  476. The unrighteous and the righteous wrong. That's

  477. it. And in the church I submit to you that there

  478. are two kinds of people. The unrighteous. And

  479. the righteous wrong. There are people who call

  480. themselves the church and Christians, but they're

  481. not living for the Lord. They're not inherently

  482. good. There's not something changing them from

  483. the inside out that makes them want to be gentle,

  484. kind, patient. Do you recognize those words?

  485. They practice self -control. Do you recognize

  486. those words? They have faith, hope, and love.

  487. Do you recognize those words? We are meant to

  488. be good. And if you're a Christian, you're meant

  489. to be good. And if you're not good, then you're

  490. either a Christian who's not good or not a Christian.

  491. Those are your options. Who we are matters in

  492. world events. People are looking. Our church

  493. calls itself a house on a hill. People are looking

  494. to see what we'll do. Will we stay the course?

  495. Will we make a difference? Will we make hard

  496. efforts when only efforts that can matter are

  497. hard efforts? Physicians matter to the world.

  498. Works matter to the world. Character matters

  499. to the world. We're talking this week, talking

  500. with a young man who's got a great opportunity.

  501. And I said, you know what? Integrity will always

  502. win the day. If you have integrity, integrity

  503. will sell. People will buy your integrity so

  504. that you don't have it anymore. A little bribe,

  505. a little temptation, a little distraction, a

  506. little opportunity to do something other than

  507. that which you're supposed to do. And they'll

  508. make it beneficial to you to choose that over

  509. what you would choose if you stuck with your

  510. integrity. But people will buy your integrity

  511. if you keep it. Because they need people. They

  512. need people that they can trust. They need people

  513. that will work, that won't quit, that don't give

  514. up, that don't struggle with the first heartbeat

  515. that goes awry. If you have integrity, you're

  516. valuable to the world because it's a rare commodity.

  517. These things are discernible to reputation and

  518. word of mouth, but understand that there is something

  519. more going on for us. When you go into heaven,

  520. it will not matter whether or not the guy that

  521. you bought your gas from thinks you're a good

  522. person or not. It will not matter whether your

  523. teacher thinks you are the best student in the

  524. class or not, or your boss thinks you're promotable

  525. or should make more money. None of that is going

  526. to matter. What's going to matter is what God

  527. knows about you. We were traveling down to Tennessee

  528. to see my parents, and on the way down, we stopped

  529. at Walmart to pick up a couple of things that

  530. we had forgotten. And while we were there, Sherry

  531. picked out a book off the bookshelf. They used

  532. to have the front of Walmart. They used to have

  533. these big area books. Now they kind of do it

  534. differently. They used to have these big area

  535. books up there. She picked out a paperback book.

  536. I think it was $3 .99. I think the book was $3

  537. .99. So we were carrying a bunch of stuff. We

  538. hadn't thought we were going to buy very much,

  539. so we didn't get a cart. So I was carrying stuff,

  540. and we had a bunch of kids with us because we've

  541. done that. We've produced a bunch of kids. And

  542. so we were carrying all this stuff under our

  543. arms, me and the kids and Sherry, and we're carrying

  544. it. Well, I put the book in my armpit right here

  545. because that was convenient. It was smaller than

  546. this Bible right here, and it was under my armpit.

  547. And we went to the register, and we paid for

  548. everything, and we left, and we got out to the

  549. car. And when we got out to the car, I took the

  550. book out from underneath my armpit, and I stuck

  551. it between the seats, and we drove about 25 miles

  552. down the road. And then it occurred to me what

  553. I had done, just like it probably occurred to

  554. you what I had done. We didn't pay for the book.

  555. We paid for everything else. We didn't pay for

  556. the book. We stole the book, a paperback book

  557. for $3 .99. We're 25 miles down the road toward

  558. my parents' house. So then we started talking

  559. about it. We're like, let's problem solve here.

  560. How are we going to solve this problem? We don't

  561. steal books. That's not a thing we do. I said,

  562. well, get off at the next exit. We'll drive back

  563. and pay for it. That's 25 miles back to Walmart.

  564. And then 25 miles back, we're 50 miles out of

  565. our way. That's costing us more in gas and wear

  566. and tear in the car than what the book was worth.

  567. I said, so maybe that's not the best solution.

  568. So we go driving just a little bit more. We're

  569. talking about it. And we're definitely not going

  570. to not pay for it. So I said, well, we could

  571. wait and pay for it. We're going to my parents

  572. for four days. On the way back, we can stop at

  573. that Walmart on the way back and pay for it.

  574. And I thought, I said, well, that's not a great

  575. solution because we could forget. We could miss

  576. the exit. I'm not sure we would remember for

  577. sure where the Walmart is at, right? There's

  578. a lot of problems out of that. So then we're

  579. driving a little bit more, and then we see a

  580. Walmart on an exit. And I said, you know what?

  581. It's all Walmart. Get off here. So we get off

  582. at Walmart. We walk in. We go to the customer

  583. service desk, and I walk up to the customer service

  584. desk with the book in my hands, and I say to

  585. the lady, I say, I'm here to pay for this book.

  586. And she said, well, you can just take it through

  587. the register. And I said, well, I can, but I

  588. need a little help. I said, the problem is, I

  589. want to pay for this book, but I didn't get it

  590. from this Walmart. We got it from a Walmart about

  591. 30 miles up the road. So I need you to take my

  592. money and then send them my money. And she said,

  593. what? I said, are you crazy? And I said, no,

  594. I don't steal. I said, I'm a follower of the

  595. Lord Jesus Christ. I don't steal anything. And

  596. I accidentally stole this book, and now I need

  597. to pay for the book. So she says, Hey, I forget

  598. her name. Like, hey, Mary, come here. And she

  599. calls Mary over, and she says, so this guy is

  600. here. He wants to, and she says, does he have

  601. his receipt? She goes, no, no, no. He wants to

  602. pay for this book that he accidentally stole

  603. from a Walmart up the road. Mary says, just a

  604. second. She goes over and knocks on the inner

  605. office door. She says, Bob, Bob, come out here.

  606. So suddenly I'm a three -headed goat standing

  607. at the customer service counter. Now there are

  608. other people standing in line waiting to be waited

  609. on and now they're all getting testy with me

  610. because I have the weird request that's going

  611. to take the most time. It's going to make the

  612. line take the most time. Like I wrote a check

  613. and couldn't figure out how to write my name

  614. or something, right? And so they're all getting

  615. a little irritated. But at the same time, they're

  616. at the zoo too. They're like, this is cool. What's

  617. going to happen here, right? So the long and

  618. the short of it was after they first refused,

  619. they got a manager and he took my money and they

  620. agreed to forward the money. They first refused.

  621. The entire committee and all the people in line

  622. agreed that I should not be allowed to pay for

  623. the book that I accidentally stole at Walmart

  624. 30 miles up the road. Then we got a manager involved

  625. and the manager finally agreed. And the manager

  626. said, well, I'll walk you over to the register.

  627. So he walked me over to the register. We paid

  628. for the book at the register. And then he said,

  629. thank you very much. He said, I've never done

  630. that. I've worked for Walmart for 20 years and

  631. I've never seen this before. And I see, I kind

  632. of got that. Right? And the people who were at

  633. the counter were still giving me dirty looks

  634. as they were being helped at the counter as I

  635. was leaving after paying for the book. Listen

  636. to me. I did not do that for the people at Walmart.

  637. I don't know them. Bob or Mary or whatever the

  638. heck their names are. I don't even remember their

  639. names for sure. I don't know them. But this is

  640. a true event that took place in my life. But

  641. I did it and this is why. 1 Corinthians 4 .9

  642. says this. He says, For I think God has exhibited

  643. us apostles and you can submit your name there

  644. if you want. Last of all, as men condemned to

  645. death, because we have become, and here it is,

  646. a spectacle to the world, both to angels and

  647. men. If you get nothing else out of today's sermon,

  648. I want you to understand that what's watching

  649. you, what's depending on your choice to do the

  650. right thing, It's not your family, although they

  651. surely are. It's not your kids, although they

  652. surely are. It's not the police. They might write

  653. you a ticket or not, although they surely are

  654. watching. And they must. That's their jobs, right?

  655. But what's watching you is nothing less than

  656. every angel. Every spiritual being in the spiritual

  657. realms. You think, well, they can't see me. They're

  658. somewhere far away. That's not how it works in

  659. the spiritual realms. Right? People who live

  660. in Africa, they can't see you right now. Even

  661. if you were on Facebook, they probably couldn't

  662. see you because technology is not that good.

  663. The point is, the angels can see you. And you

  664. have become a spectacle to the world. That's

  665. everybody that doesn't know Jesus and to the

  666. angels. Therefore, your actions must come in

  667. line, whatever the cost, with your expectation

  668. of the kingdom of God or there is a debate. There

  669. becomes a contrast. And parenthetically, they

  670. should be able to say, That Dan, that Pastor

  671. Dan, that guy from New Heights, Toledo, he wasn't

  672. consenting when that book was stolen. He wasn't

  673. consenting. He wasn't consenting. He's not in

  674. on it. He's not with it. He's not for it. They

  675. should know. Somebody asks whether or not you

  676. would do it and it's a sin, they should already

  677. be able to say, I don't think so. I mean, I don't

  678. know whether to trust people or not. Lots of

  679. people sin all the time. People I wouldn't expect

  680. all the time like that. But I'm pretty sure that

  681. guy, he's different. That girl, she's different.

  682. Will she be there when she said she'd be there?

  683. Yeah, she'll be there. Unless her being there

  684. will hurt somebody because she wouldn't do that.

  685. Ephesians 3 .10 says it this way. It says, so

  686. that the manifold wisdom of God. Let's be sure

  687. we understand what's at stake here. Because you

  688. can tell people about the Bible. You can buy

  689. people Bibles. In fact, I would encourage you

  690. to do that. If you know somebody that needs to

  691. know about God, buy them a Bible. You can do

  692. it for a buck and a quarter, I think it's at

  693. right now, with a dollar and a quarter tree,

  694. right? Buy them a Bible. But definitely don't

  695. stop there. Tell them what you know. But definitely

  696. don't stop there because it says the manifold

  697. wisdom of God might now be made known through

  698. the church to the, listen to this, rulers and

  699. authorities in the heavenly places. Then what's

  700. in charge? Other than God, He already knows.

  701. But everybody that's got power and authority

  702. under God is waiting for you and me to... to

  703. disclose to them the manifold wisdom of God.

  704. That's what's at stake. Do not think that you

  705. can give them a Bible or tell them about Jesus

  706. and they'll come to Christ and get saved and

  707. know how to live for the Lord if you're not going

  708. to live for the Lord in front of them. You are

  709. the linchpin. You are the key. You are the one

  710. who can make known the love of Christ that someone

  711. died on the cross and you personally experienced

  712. it. Can you verbally explain to somebody what

  713. happened to you when you got saved? Like, oh

  714. yeah, I was sitting in the chairs and the pastor

  715. preached and I was like, yeah, that's me. I think

  716. I need to do that. And I walked forward and we

  717. said a little prayer and then we told everybody

  718. and then I got dunked in the water and ever since

  719. then I've been teaching Sunday school. No, something

  720. happens when people get saved. Their minds are

  721. changed. They get a new heart. I explain that.

  722. Go to a lost person who's really lost, suffering,

  723. really struggling and try to tell them what it

  724. felt like. for you to get saved. What adjectives

  725. are you going to use? Our job is to live in front

  726. of the world and angels and the authorities and

  727. rulers and the heavenly places as if we are expecting

  728. the kingdom of God so that they may see in a

  729. lifelong testimony maybe, step after step after

  730. step, so that they may see what that actually

  731. looks like. So they can begin to understand what

  732. it actually means to be born again, even though

  733. you can't really explain it. But your life, collectively,

  734. our lives can. The next one is this. You don't

  735. have to yield. We see Joseph's example beautifully.

  736. And that is, you don't have to yield to pressures.

  737. And you're going to get some. Every time I just

  738. saw a video, well, I had the flu. I was down

  739. on my back on Friday. Just went real short, which

  740. was a blessing. But while I was down, I watched

  741. a bunch of faith and some of you guys' videos

  742. and stuff like that if you're an Instagram user.

  743. And that's because, like you got like five of

  744. them. I apologize if I blew up your phone, but

  745. I was watching faith -based videos online while

  746. I was sick. I watched an entire Bible. I watched

  747. the entire book of James in Bible study on RightNow

  748. Media, which you can do for free because our

  749. church provides that. I watched the entire book

  750. of James in RightNow Media while I was sick.

  751. And I was going to do another book, but then

  752. I was kind of like tired of looking at the TV.

  753. So I was looking for other things to do. And

  754. I wound up on my phone watching faith -based

  755. videos. And one of the videos I saw was a girl,

  756. 17 years old. And she said, I'm actively being

  757. excluded from everything that everyone in my

  758. life does. My family is not followers of Christ.

  759. My friends outside the church don't want anything

  760. to do with me. I'm no longer invited to parties.

  761. I'm not brought in on the secrets. I'm not hip

  762. to all the sassy, nasty memes that are on social

  763. media anymore. I don't talk like they talk anymore.

  764. And so now, if it weren't for the church, I'd

  765. be kind of lonely. And then the video ends with

  766. her in youth group with 15 other teenagers who

  767. feel the same way, except they don't, because

  768. the church is the church together. It's time

  769. we remembered world events, positions, works,

  770. character. It all matters. Reputation, it matters.

  771. But it matters not because you're going to get

  772. ahead or because it's going to make things easier

  773. for you. It matters because people are watching

  774. you. And they're watching you to see if you're

  775. really believing, really expecting Jesus to come

  776. again, then are you going to actually live that

  777. way? And when you face those pressures, are you

  778. going to let the past define you? Or let the

  779. risk dissuade you? Modern counseling, if you

  780. go to a counselor to deal with your mental health

  781. concerns, incorporates... discussing triggers,

  782. they will help you try to figure out what's in

  783. your past that's blowing up your present. That's

  784. what they do. And it works. It's pretty effective.

  785. The idea of what they do is they say, well, tell

  786. me a story from your childhood. And then they

  787. get you to rate it. On a 7, does that hurt? How

  788. do you feel about that? On a scale of 1 to 10.

  789. Is that a 7? You know, how do you feel about

  790. what your dad said to you when you were 12? And

  791. they'll get like a bunch of stories. You have

  792. like 20, 30 stories. And eventually they find

  793. triggers. What's upsetting you? And then they,

  794. how much is upsetting you? And then they give

  795. you coping mechanisms for how to lower your numbers.

  796. It's a seven. It's upsetting you terribly. How

  797. do you get it down to a three? Is it a three?

  798. Is it when it's a zero, you're like completely

  799. healed, right? That's, that's how it works. That's

  800. the process. And it's not a bad process, except

  801. this is how Jesus actually does it. Jesus not

  802. only lessens the impact, according to the Bible,

  803. all old things have passed away. So while we're

  804. working on making them pass away, we have to

  805. remember that in actuality, wait for it, they

  806. have actually already passed away. So while you're

  807. saying, what my dad said to me when I was 10

  808. really hurt me, what my brother did to me when

  809. I was 12 really hurt me, what happened to me

  810. when I was 21 really hurt me, while you're doing

  811. that, you need to remember, if you become a born

  812. -again Christian, then none of that can actually

  813. touch you anymore. Because you're not even the

  814. same person anymore. If there's a dead body laying

  815. on the ground in the hallway and somebody comes

  816. in and stomps on its head, that is an injustice.

  817. It is wrong. But he doesn't know it. He's dead.

  818. He's either in heaven or he's in hell and he

  819. doesn't care if you stomp on his head anymore.

  820. It's still wrong. It's disrespect. But it doesn't

  821. matter. And that's who we were before we were

  822. born again, brought to life. The things that

  823. we experienced as a dead person, they really

  824. don't matter now because we have a new life in

  825. Christ. That's why Jesus said count the cost

  826. up front because one of the costs is you need

  827. to surrender your personal rebellion even unto

  828. death. You could have to be crucified. I hope

  829. not for any of us. But that could happen and

  830. it did happen. It happened to the disciples.

  831. It has happened. It's happened. It happened this

  832. week. There are two countries in the world right

  833. now. where Christians are being buried in mass

  834. graves because they will not recant believing

  835. in Jesus Christ. Now, what happened to you? You

  836. still get to get up tomorrow, pick what you're

  837. going to eat, shop at the grocery store, use

  838. your hot water that comes on every time you turn

  839. the faucet, and no one's going to kill you before

  840. you go to sleep tomorrow night for being a follower

  841. of Jesus, at least probably not, 99 .9 % likely.

  842. But tomorrow, again, in both of those countries,

  843. they will bury more Christians in mass graves

  844. because they will not recant. And it is illegal

  845. to be a Christian in those countries. But you

  846. see, they aren't afraid of it. And they're still

  847. not recanting. Because when they accepted Jesus

  848. Christ as Lord and Savior, when they came to

  849. the moment of their rebirth, they actually experienced

  850. that rebirth. And they began to believe and await

  851. for the coming of the kingdom of God in its fullness.

  852. And to recant... would be to say, I don't believe.

  853. I don't believe in what I actually felt. I don't

  854. believe that I'm actually made new. I don't believe

  855. that he's actually going to come again when they

  856. know in their soul, in their heart of hearts,

  857. that that's the truth. They would be lying. And

  858. they won't lie. They would rather die and go

  859. straight to heaven than live the life of a rebel

  860. on earth and go straight to hell. I don't blame

  861. them. I think it seems like a pretty good choice.

  862. And I think it's what Jesus wanted from us. He

  863. asked us then to count the cost. I'm asking you,

  864. did you count the cost? If you counted the cost

  865. and you're looking, then you don't have to yield

  866. to pressures or let the past define you or let

  867. the risk of what you're asked to do or what the

  868. results might be dissuade you from taking steps.

  869. Joseph of Arimathea did not. And he was a good

  870. and righteous man who was waiting for the kingdom

  871. of God. And that is what we are called to be,

  872. good and righteous humans. Waiting for the kingdom

  873. of God. That brings us essentially to our conclusion.

  874. Commitment. Faithfulness. Doing what you said

  875. you would do. Taking the next steps in whatever

  876. you're called to. These things shine. I've been

  877. there. I've been there at moments when I was

  878. driving to church going, Lord, I don't think

  879. I can do this anymore. I don't think I can keep

  880. preaching. Keep studying the word every Sunday

  881. and stand up in front of my family, my friends,

  882. brothers and sisters in Christ and preach the

  883. word and feel like I'm not a... When my grandsons

  884. are falling asleep in the back of the room and

  885. I realize I have failed to deliver the gospel

  886. effectively to the teenagers in my own family,

  887. I have to question myself. You think I don't?

  888. You think that what you're doing doesn't affect

  889. the people around you? You don't show up for

  890. worship on Sunday morning and sometimes it's

  891. because people are sick and you shouldn't come

  892. if you have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting because

  893. you'll just make somebody else sick. I get that.

  894. You think that doesn't affect anybody? When we

  895. sing, that 12 of us that actually sing or whatever

  896. out of 30 people in the room, you think that

  897. the other 18 people aren't having an impact?

  898. They sure are. What you are doing impacts people.

  899. Commitment shines. Faithfulness shines. When

  900. you don't show up, to do the ministry that you

  901. committed to. Or when somebody walks by you and

  902. they're clearly depressed and they're struggling

  903. or whatever it is, and you don't take the time

  904. to talk to them about God or Jesus Christ, you

  905. think that doesn't say anything? If there's a

  906. human being and they're teetering on the edge

  907. of being saved, you can bet there's a cluster

  908. of angels grabbed around them trying to lead

  909. them to the right place. And you have family

  910. members like that. You have people that... Worldly,

  911. right? Worldly, but love you and you love them.

  912. And if you love them the way Christ loved them,

  913. then you're not showing up to say the right thing,

  914. do the right thing. And that moment of time is

  915. just like you spitting in the face of the very

  916. Jesus who died on the cross for us. So when I

  917. feel that way, I feel like maybe it's gone far

  918. enough. But here's the problem. God told me what

  919. to do. And every time I feel like I... Feel like

  920. I just want to quit, give up, whatever. God says,

  921. I didn't let you off. You can let yourself off

  922. if you want, but I didn't let you off. I've told

  923. you what you have to do. So why are we having

  924. this conversation again for the 30th time, God

  925. says. And I said, well, there's something in

  926. me, Lord. And I know what the word says. The

  927. word says repent. So I turn to God again and

  928. he fills me with strength and my car winds up

  929. in the parking lot and I preach the next sermon.

  930. I deal with the next problem, whatever it is.

  931. I'm being realistic here because I understand

  932. some of you is the same way. Some of you have

  933. seen it. It's hard. It's hard to be found doing

  934. what it is that God would have you to do when

  935. your body is struggling or your mind is struggling

  936. or your finances are struggling, your relationships,

  937. whatever it is. Right? It's hard. But commitment

  938. and faithfulness shines in a way. That the harder

  939. it gets, the brighter it shines. You understand?

  940. So you can be transparent about how hard it is.

  941. In fact, I would highly recommend that. The next

  942. time that you push through a wall of luck that's

  943. 10 foot thick and dark and you can't see and

  944. step out on the other side and start doing what

  945. it is that God has you to do, I want you to tell

  946. everybody about that wall. You say, it was hard

  947. for me today. I pushed through. But I give God

  948. all the glory. See, what people do is they push

  949. through to get to the other side and they're

  950. so exuberant, so excited, like, yay, look at

  951. me, I'm here and I'm a follower of Jesus and

  952. it's wonderful and I'm not bothered by anything

  953. and I won't be, my feathers will be unruffled

  954. every single day. It's all water off a duck's

  955. back because I'm not facing any real difficulty

  956. because Jesus took it all and we live like that.

  957. And then that makes other Christians, when they

  958. hit the wall, go, why me? And that's not real.

  959. What's real is life is difficult. Life is challenging.

  960. Life can mean crucifixion. It can mean disease.

  961. It can mean dying in an earthquake or a car accident

  962. or getting a bullet in the brain. Life can be

  963. like that. The question is, knowing that life

  964. can be like that, can you nonetheless accept

  965. Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and do what

  966. he's asked you to do? And if you stay the course,

  967. the world may write down your name. You may become

  968. historic. There was a woman named Mary who broke

  969. a jar of perfume and wiped it with her hair on

  970. Jesus' feet at dinner one time. And the disciples

  971. were questioning, that's not weird. That's a

  972. weird thing. And Judas was all upset because

  973. she could have sold that for money and put the

  974. money in the coffers and taken care of a lot

  975. of poor people. It was very expensive. But we

  976. really find out in the Scripture that he was

  977. only really upset because then if she had done

  978. that, then he could have stole some of the money.

  979. A lot of times when people are trying to tell

  980. you not to do what it is that God wants you to

  981. do is because they have their own personal motivations

  982. that have nothing to do with Jesus. Anyway, Jesus

  983. said, what she's done here today, it will not

  984. be forgotten. Now it's almost 2 ,000 years later

  985. and you know her name. Don't you? It's Mary.

  986. Not his mother. It's Mary. And she wiped perfume

  987. with her hair on Jesus' feet. And Jesus said

  988. she will never be forgotten. In the midst of

  989. time when they were going to crucify Jesus, there

  990. was a man. He was a wealthy man. He was part

  991. of the Sanhedrin. Now, probably nothing was ever

  992. written about him because he was just a part

  993. of the Sanhedrin. He was just a guy. And there

  994. wasn't just a few. There was a couple dozen guys

  995. in the Sanhedrin. Maybe his name would have never

  996. gone down in history. But he had heard the teachings

  997. of Jesus. He'd counted the cost. And then while

  998. Jesus was still hanging on the cross, he thought,

  999. well, I really should do something about this.

1000. So he got up and he went to Pilate and he asked

1001. for Jesus' body and then he wrapped him in a

1002. linen cloth and laid him in his very own tomb

1003. where a body never had been laid. He respected

1004. the Son of God, God the Son, Jesus Christ, when...

1005. Maybe nobody else could. And you know his name.

1006. You live almost 2 ,000 years later and you know

1007. his name. Not only that, but there are over 25

1008. ,000 extant texts. Julius Caesar is something

1009. like, I don't know the number, but it's maybe

  1010. 1 ,000 to 2 ,000 texts from his era that even

1011. talk about him, that he even existed. And this

1012. guy. From the era of his living, there are 25

1013. ,000 plus extant texts, texts that have survived

1014. that say Joseph of Arimathea. See, the world

1015. may write down your name, but here's the incredible

1016. thing. That doesn't mean anything. That's not

1017. the goal. It's not that they'll write down your

1018. name and keep track of who you were, that you'll

1019. exist with a legacy on earth, but rather that

1020. your name would be written in the Lamb's Book

1021. of Life. That matters. And that happened the

1022. day you accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

1023. You counted the cost. You said, whatever he wants

1024. from me, it's all in for him. I put it all on

1025. the table. I put it all in. And then when I'm

1026. sick, I'm still all in. And when I'm hurting,

1027. I'm still all in. When my mental health isn't

1028. right, I'm still all in. When my money doesn't

1029. seem to line up with me being able to give or

1030. do what I'm supposed to do, I'm still all in.

1031. When somebody wants me to do something, I'm still

1032. all in. Better I follow Jesus than live another

1033. day if I have to choose between the two. Joseph

1034. of Arimathea did not allow. The things of his

1035. past. His own nervousness or scaredness or fear

1036. of what they might do to him to stop him from

1037. taking the body down. Which is a horrible task.

1038. Wrapping it in a simple linen cloth and putting

1039. it in a tomb. And he did all of that because

1040. he was a good and righteous man who was waiting

1041. for the kingdom of God. And what I see before

1042. me are people who have every possibility, every

1043. potential to be good and righteous men and women.

1044. who are waiting for the kingdom of God. If your

1045. name has been written in the Lamb's book of life,

1046. that's all that matters. The Lamb has been sacrificed.

1047. The best we can offer to God is not our all.

  1048. We say that a lot, don't we? There's a great

1049. story about a kid who went to church and he loved

1050. the Lord Jesus and he passed the offering plate.

1051. When the offering plate came around, he didn't

1052. have any money to put in the offering plate.

1053. So he sat it on the floor and then stood in the

1054. offering plate. And they said, what are you doing?

1055. And he says, I don't have any money, but to Jesus

1056. I give my all. And we think, man, our all, that's

1057. it. If we can give our all, that's the best we

1058. can offer. But that isn't it. Your all is not

1059. the best you can offer. Jesus is literally the

1060. best you can offer. Jesus is what you can bring

1061. to every problem. Jesus is what you can bring

1062. into any person's life who will listen. Jesus

1063. is what you can bring into your own life. Jesus

1064. is what you can submit to. Jesus, the Lamb of

1065. God who is spotless and without blemish. I was

1066. not that. I still am not that. The only righteousness

1067. and innocence I truly have is found in Jesus

1068. Christ and it is enough. And where I go, He goes.

1069. And that is what you bring. If you know Jesus,

1070. If you know how special He is, then you know

1071. you cannot fail. And there is nothing more that

1072. you have to do. It's all been taken care of.

1073. Your eternity is settled. At the same time, if

1074. you know Jesus is enough, then you know that

1075. you cannot truly fail in everything that God

1076. has given you to do. And Ephesians 2 .10 says

1077. that there are works that are set aside for us

1078. to do. You cannot fail. If you would set out

1079. to do the things and pitch yourself and truly

1080. put yourself on the line to do the things that

1081. God would have you do, you cannot fail. Even

1082. if you fail, you don't fail. Why? Because your

1083. commitment, your faithfulness, and your unwillingness

1084. to stop will speak volumes to the world and to

1085. the angels and to the demons and every ruler

1086. and authority in the spiritual realms. And that's

1087. what's really at stake, that the manifold wisdom

1088. of God would be displayed to any and all. People

1089. that you can never get an appointment with will

1090. nonetheless experience it. Along the way, you

1091. will have temptations. You notice that the ladies

1092. did not go and prepare the body on the Sabbath.

1093. because that would have been sin. You say, but

1094. it's the Son of God. Surely if you're doing something

1095. for Jesus, then sin would be okay, right? We

1096. can break that rule. Jesus said, the Sabbath

1097. is for man, not man for the Sabbath. So that

1098. means that you can do certain things on the Sabbath.

1099. So they should have been able to honor Jesus,

1100. right? But they knew better. Can't honor Jesus

1101. and sin at the same time. Because Jesus said,

1102. he who loves me will follow the commands of my

1103. father. And one of the commands of my father

1104. is to honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy.

1105. So they knew better than to try to honor Jesus

1106. by sinning against him. And so should we. When

1107. you discover sin in your life, you repent of

1108. it. You turn to God and say, let's put that behind

1109. me. Wherever you go, you take Jesus with you

1110. and you display him there. And let people say,

1111. that guy's weird. That gal, I don't quite understand

1112. her. She's making decisions that don't line up

1113. with what the world would necessarily do. Why

1114. is she so ready? Why is she so ready? Why is

1115. she so prepared? Why is he so prepared? I'll

1116. tell you why. Because today is the preparation

  1117. day.
