  1. all right so like i said hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  2. 10 and verse 14 and we're going to go

  3. ahead and ask the lord's blessing upon

  4. our time heavenly father

  5. lord we come to you tonight

  6. god first of all humbled that we can

  7. even come to you like this in prayer

  8. god the truth of it is lord none of us

  9. are

  10. fit none of us are worthy

  11. and of ourselves lord god to

  12. even begin to come near your presence

  13. lord god and yeah your word tells us we

  14. can come boldly

  15. in your presence but that's not because

  16. of us god because

  17. we'll see tonight that's only because of

  18. jesus

  19. who has made us worthy

  20. father god tonight lord we desire above

  21. all things that you're glorified

  22. therefore lord i submit myself to you

  23. and ask that you would use

  24. my brain and my mouth to speak to your

  25. people

  26. god let the words that come forth for me

  27. be yours

  28. heavenly father i pray that you would

  29. remove

  30. the enemy from this place lord god

  31. there's nothing the devil would like

  32. more than to distract us god from this

  33. time and i just pray that any

  34. distractions lord god that you would

  35. just cast away

  36. that god's night

  37. we can hear from you

  38. we can be

  39. changed closer to the image of jesus

  40. father god receive all the honor and

  41. praise through our time and bless this

  42. word in christ then we pray amen

  43. amen so

  44. does anybody ever have any times in life

  45. where you get frustrated

  46. nobody well i do

  47. there's a lot of things in life that

  48. frustrate me for instance

  49. after the holidays when i go to put a

  50. pair of jeans on they don't fit

  51. that frustrating

  52. anybody come on there we go thank you

  53. we're gonna get into this one tonight um

  54. isn't it frustrating that it takes like

  55. months to lose 20 pounds but you can

  56. gain it back in like a few weeks

  57. yeah that's that's frustrating to me

  58. what's also frustrating to me is

  59. when i'm exhausted and want to go to bed

  60. my brain won't quit talking anybody ever

  61. have that problem

  62. yeah

  63. that's frustrating to me here's

  64. something else that's frustrating why is

  65. it that the person that snores always

  66. falls asleep first

  67. anybody ever think about that

  68. something else that frustrates me

  69. why is it every time you go to walmart

  70. they got 20 registers and only one's

  71. open

  72. does that ever bug anybody the to be yup

  73. that definitely frustrates me um why is

  74. it that when there's a movie you've been

  75. wanting to see some way and somebody

  76. inevitably spoils it for you before you

  77. get to see it

  78. and then there's insurance

  79. this really frustrates me

  80. why is it that we have to pay them every

  81. month but they get to pick and choose

  82. what they pay us anybody figure that one

  83. out

  84. yeah that frustrates me

  85. why is it that when you're in a hurry to

  86. get somewhere you inevitably get behind

  87. somebody slow and hit every stoplight in

  88. town does that ever bug you

  89. there's a lot of frustrations in life

  90. isn't there i mean there's a lot of

  91. things that can really get under your

  92. crawl and under your skin but you know

  93. what the number one thing

  94. that gets under my skin is in fact i

  95. think

  96. if you thought about this you'd probably

  97. agree with what i'm about to say

  98. the number one thing that gets under my

  99. skin

  100. is me

  101. anybody anybody else have that problem

  102. do you ever irritate yourself

  103. like does it ever

  104. bother you how you respond to certain

  105. things

  106. how you allow things to get to you

  107. i bugged me

  108. i irritate myself quite often and this

  109. is especially true

  110. for

  111. christians who are sincerely trying to

  112. live

  113. for the lord

  114. why is it that

  115. sin seems so easy

  116. to give into

  117. and yet doing the things we're supposed

  118. to do like

  119. read our bibles and spend time in prayer

  120. and be kind to people

  121. is so hard

  122. you ever think about that and that

  123. frustrating you ever get irritated with

  124. yourself like why

  125. why do i struggle with the good things

  126. so much and yet given so easily two

  127. things that i

  128. shouldn't

  129. why is it that when we have a bad day we

  130. always take it out on the people we love

  131. the most you ever think about that

  132. doesn't that bug you

  133. why does it always feel like a losing

  134. battle

  135. in this christian life

  136. anybody have just something that you

  137. struggle with like a sin issue a

  138. struggle of some sort that just it's

  139. like you can't overcome it

  140. it's like no matter how hard you've

  141. prayed about it no matter

  142. how much you've read the bible how much

  143. you've begged the lord to to get rid of

  144. this storm in your side it just seems

  145. like it won't

  146. go away

  147. that frustrates me

  148. it aggravates me and quite honestly it

  149. just i get so frustrated with myself

  150. sometimes be because of those things

  151. because it just seemed like the

  152. christian life is an endless battle of

  153. two steps forward and one step back

  154. and sometimes two steps four to two

  155. steps back it kind of just seems that

  156. way

  157. and the big problem with that constant

  158. cycle in our lives where we're getting

  159. frustrated with ourselves especially as

  160. a christian is that it

  161. it creates a what i'm going to call a

  162. breeding ground for

  163. satan to come into our heads to come

  164. into our minds and to

  165. convince us of things that really aren't

  166. true

  167. it gives them

  168. almost permission to come into our heads

  169. and wreak some serious havoc

  170. when it comes to our spiritual

  171. lives

  172. because when these voices in our head

  173. from the enemy

  174. come in

  175. he tries to convince us of a lot of

  176. things

  177. [Applause]

  178. like

  179. how could god ever love you

  180. how could god ever save you you think

  181. you're saved you can't be really saved

  182. you think god would accept you no

  183. you think you can really call him father

  184. when you act the way you do when you

  185. struggle the way you do when you deal

  186. with the things the way you deal with

  187. them

  188. you really think that god's gonna accept

  189. you

  190. does anybody deal with that ever in your

  191. life

  192. and the problem with that is it brings

  193. these feelings of shame

  194. into us feelings of

  195. truly just unworthiness

  196. where we don't even feel like

  197. we should ever even come to god in

  198. prayer

  199. like we don't feel we should even bother

  200. him with our with our voice because

  201. he wouldn't want us to come to him

  202. anyways after the way that we acted or

  203. the week that we had and

  204. and oftentimes our personal frustrations

  205. lead to anger with ourselves that can

  206. lead to even in many cases with people

  207. almost hatred of themselves if they're

  208. not careful

  209. and they can get to the point where

  210. they're so

  211. defeated

  212. and feel like such a loser because they

  213. keep on failing that they

  214. almost just completely walk away from

  215. the lord

  216. this happens

  217. it's happened in a lot of christians

  218. lives

  219. i've experienced it personally maybe you

  220. have two at different points in your

  221. walk with the lord and and during those

  222. times

  223. there's like kind of a cycle that we go

  224. through sometimes we go to great lengths

  225. to try to compensate for our flaws

  226. like if we can do a bunch of good stuff

  227. to overcome the bad stuff maybe we'll

  228. kind of balance the scale in our favor

  229. but let's just face it that's stressful

  230. because no matter how hard we try it

  231. seems like we keep stepping on our toes

  232. and then after we go through that cycle

  233. we almost feel like just giving up

  234. there's

  235. times where we can get so far to where

  236. we're so defeated we just throw our

  237. hands in the air and say well if i'm

  238. going to turn into that i might as well

  239. go

  240. both feet in and we almost just go into

  241. this rebellion phase against

  242. the lord

  243. and the problem with that is it gets to

  244. a point where christians people that

  245. that are born again believers saved

  246. children of god can come to the point

  247. where they actually

  248. are angry

  249. at the lord they can grow even to resent

  250. god

  251. because god i thought you loved me

  252. enough to keep me away from this stuff

  253. why aren't you why don't you give me the

  254. strength i've prayed i've tried i've

  255. read my bibles i've done all the right

  256. things why is it that i struggle so

  257. deeply

  258. and christians will turn

  259. away

  260. because they feel completely

  261. unacceptable to the lord

  262. this is a dangerous dangerous place to

  263. be

  264. as a christian and if we're not careful

  265. we can easily fall

  266. into that trap

  267. because satan would like nothing more

  268. than to convince us that god doesn't

  269. want us

  270. and yet that's completely

  271. untrue

  272. and so when a christian gets there

  273. that's a bad spot it's a difficult spot

  274. to get out of so what we're going to

  275. look at today um in our time here is

  276. really

  277. how do we

  278. keep ourselves from getting there to

  279. that point how do we keep satan's voice

  280. out of our heads how do we

  281. stop the cycle from happening in our

  282. lives and allowing him to destroy us and

  283. the answer as we'll see today is

  284. understanding that for us as god's

  285. people

  286. a truth that we need to grasp is that

  287. god sees us far differently than we see

  288. ourselves

  289. and i praise god for that

  290. now as i said today we're going to be

  291. looking at at one verse and it's

  292. here in hebrews chapter 10

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  293. and verse 14 and i will tell you this is

  294. one of the most

  295. profound verses i've ever read in my

  296. life it's a verse that i have never

  297. forgotten it's one that has stuck with

  298. me

  299. as long as i have known it and it says

  300. this

  301. for by that one offering

  302. he speaking of jesus forever made

  303. perfect

  304. those who are being

  305. made holy

  306. now

  307. think the title of my message

  308. is on purpose this week

  309. i entitled my message a finished work in

  310. progress

  311. and if you'll get the little bit of a

  312. pun on that or the play of words on that

  313. it really plays into this specific

  314. passage of scripture because

  315. it says for by that one offering christ

  316. for

  317. ever

  318. has made perfect now

  319. in the greek language and i know we

  320. don't speak greek as americans but it's

  321. but it's understood it's important to

  322. understand some of these some of these

  323. verses from that text because that's

  324. what they were written in in this

  325. specific phrase forever made perfect is

  326. in what's called the the perfect tense

  327. in the greek language meaning that it

  328. was a a work that was done in the past

  329. that its effect goes on into the future

  330. forever it's kind of the idea and so

  331. jesus in his one sacrifice

  332. has already perfected

  333. forever it says

  334. but then it says those who are

  335. being as in active present tense being

  336. made holy so how here's here's the

  337. profound nature of this verse

  338. how can we

  339. in one sense be absolutely perfect in

  340. the eyes of god

  341. and yet

  342. not be perfect in being made perfect

  343. you get it

  344. we have been perfected and yet we're

  345. being

  346. perfected

  347. how does this work

  348. and it's in this if we can grasp

  349. this passage it will completely change

  350. your view

  351. of how you believe god sees you

  352. as a christian

  353. now to understand this passage really we

  354. need to understand the context behind

  355. the specific passage of scripture

  356. now this book of hebrews was written in

  357. the to first century jews right and so

  358. these jews were used to living under

  359. what was known as the jewish law or the

  360. law of moses and although this was

  361. believed to be written somewhere 35 to

  362. 40 years after jesus had already died

  363. and arisen and went back to his heavenly

  364. throne many jews still struggled with

  365. what i'm gonna call works based

  366. salvation

  367. that this idea that they had to perform

  368. a certain way

  369. for god to truly accept them for

  370. who they were meaning there were still

  371. something there was still something in

  372. these jewish

  373. christians that believed for god to

  374. truly accept them for him to truly have

  375. for them to truly have their names

  376. securely written down to heaven they had

  377. to follow the rules enough

  378. so that god would receive them

  379. and can i tell you something that is

  380. still something that so many christians

  381. struggle with all the time

  382. this idea that

  383. for god to accept me i need to follow

  384. the rules

  385. for for god to really be pleased with me

  386. i need to do this this this this

  387. and this and then god will really be

  388. happy to have me as a part of his family

  389. this is essentially what these jews of

  390. this first century were dealing with now

  391. although the gospel had been kind of

  392. widely preached by this point and even

  393. these jewish people that this was

  394. written to had already made a decision

  395. to follow jesus as lord and savior most

  396. of them they had a really tough time

  397. leaving the roots of their jewish faith

  398. that faith that centered around the

  399. performance of

  400. the law now in the old testament we have

  401. genesis which is a cool book we have the

  402. first part of exodus which is a cool

  403. book and then you have like the second

  404. half of exodus and leviticus and numbers

  405. and deuteronomy and

  406. those books and you read them and it's

  407. like

  408. it's like all these rules and laws and

  409. stuff and it's like what does this have

  410. to do with anything right well to the

  411. jewish people that lived in it had had

  412. everything to do with what they were

  413. living with i mean for one it governed

  414. them um part of the reason they got the

  415. law was to it was part of how they were

  416. supposed to run their government um

  417. there was different things like feasts

  418. and festivals they were expected to take

  419. part in and the purpose of those was to

  420. remind them of the incredible works that

  421. god had done um to be a constant

  422. reminder that god was on their side that

  423. god was worthy of worship and and worthy

  424. of to serve and they had laws about food

  425. and clothing that were designed to set

  426. them apart from the other surrounding

  427. nations um there was a list of things

  428. that would make them ceremonially

  429. unclean which would prevent them from

  430. coming to the place of worship um if

  431. they were unclean they were essentially

  432. unfit to be in the presence of god and

  433. so this was kind of the context of what

  434. the jews even a few years after jesus

  435. had already died this is all they had

  436. known

  437. now when we think about the law we often

  438. think about like the ten commandments

  439. you might be more familiar with those

  440. right the ten commandments were god's

  441. moral law his expectations for his

  442. people and then the other one most

  443. people think of when they think about

  444. the law where the sacrament was the

  445. sacrificial loss

  446. like have you read the old testament

  447. it's there's a lot of blood in the old

  448. testament isn't there

  449. i mean they're killing

  450. turtle doves and they're killing goats

  451. and they're killing sheep and they're

  452. killing bulls and they're and it's all

  453. these blood sacrifices

  454. and everything else and this was part of

  455. is this what was called really this old

  456. covenant of the old testament which was

  457. an agreement between god and the nation

  458. of israel which were his called out

  459. people and here's the idea he was they

  460. were given rules you follow these rules

  461. these ten commandments but god knew that

  462. they were going to fail and so because

  463. they were going to fail which

  464. essentially is sin right because when we

  465. break god's law that's what breaking

  466. god's law is is sin and so because they

  467. sin he instituted these sacrificial laws

  468. because from the very beginning of time

  469. the penalty for sin is what

  470. death

  471. which is why hebrews chapter 9 and verse

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  472. 22

  473. talks about how this is always the way

  474. it's been without the shedding of blood

  475. there is no forgiveness of sins and so

  476. in the old testament you had an innocent

  477. animal's life that was taken

  478. in place of the guilty person who had

  479. sinned why because again since that

  480. beginning of creation this was the

  481. decree and this incident innocent

  482. animal's life was taken to cover

  483. to atone for if you will the life of the

  484. guilty person now this doesn't seem

  485. today in our context of living seem to

  486. make any sense and yet

  487. it's a good thing god did it that way

  488. because if you would have acquired

  489. death from the person that sinned

  490. instead of allowing an animal to recover

  491. for their sin how many people you think

  492. will be left alive today

  493. how about this many we wouldn't be here

  494. and so there's a good reason god did

  495. this now there was also

  496. spiritual reason god did this which was

  497. obviously

  498. to help them understand that they in

  499. their own strength they in their own

  500. power

  501. could never do enough to be acceptable

  502. by god

  503. and the fact that they had to do these

  504. sacrifices all the time was continual

  505. proof

  506. that

  507. they weren't good enough

  508. and so the law really in its intent as

  509. we see in the new testament was to lead

  510. them to a better sacrifice to lead them

  511. to jesus the one who died one time for

  512. all people which brings us back again to

  513. this verse for today that for by that

  514. one offering jesus when he went to the

  515. cross when his blood was shed when he

  516. died when he was buried that he had in

  517. that one offering he forever made

  518. perfect those who are being made holy

  519. now as we think about that verse i want

  520. to talk about two basic things before we

  521. kind of bring in some application

  522. one is this i want to talk about the

  523. completed work of jesus

  524. for us

  525. on our behalf

  526. see when jesus went to the cross he

  527. accomplished something that nobody else

  528. could

  529. when jesus went to the cross he

  530. accomplished more in that one sacrifice

  531. than the thousands upon thousands upon

  532. thousands of animals that had been

  533. killed from that time

  534. before

  535. now hebrews chapter 10 verses 1 through

    Hebrews 10:1–4

  536. 4 says this

  537. the old system under the law of moses

  538. was only a shadow

  539. a dim preview of the good things to come

  540. not the good things themselves the

  541. sacrifices of the under that old system

  542. were repeated again and again year after

  543. year but they were but they were never

  544. able to provide perfect cleansing for

  545. those who came to worship if they could

  546. have provided perfect cleansing the

  547. sacrifices would have stopped for the

  548. worshipers would have been purified once

  549. for all time and their feelings of guilt

  550. would have disappeared but instead those

  551. sacrifices actually reminded them of

  552. their sins year after year for it is not

  553. possible for the blood of bulls and

  554. goats to ever take away sin and so what

  555. the blood of bulls and goats couldn't do

  556. jesus did

  557. with his blood on

  558. the cross

  559. hebrews chapter 10 and verse 12 our high

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  560. priest speaking of christ offered

  561. himself to god as a single sacrifice for

  562. sins good for all time and then he sat

  563. down the place of honor at god's at

  564. god's right hand in this picture of

  565. christ ascending to heaven and sitting

  566. down is a huge picture image of the fact

  567. that his work was done

  568. he had completed what he came

  569. to do

  570. now

  571. we get this idea of that one offering

  572. making perfect forever those people that

  573. come to faith in jesus and the question

  574. is we have to ask is how is that really

  575. even possible if you have your bible

  576. flip over to romans chapter 5 for a

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  577. moment

  578. and we get this interesting um picture

  579. here

  580. romans chapter 5 i'm going to read verse

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  581. 12 and then verse 15 through 19.

  582. so roman chapter 5 verse 12 says this

  583. when adam sinned adam the first man when

  584. he brought sin into the world when

  585. adam's sin sin entered the world adam's

  586. sin brought death and so death spread to

  587. everyone for everyone sinned and so we

  588. have this picture in the beginning with

  589. this first man adam the first created

  590. being right he brings sin in the world

  591. because he did the one thing god told

  592. him not to do and because of that he

  593. brought this curse of sin that has

  594. passed on generation after generation

  595. after generation person after person

  596. after person literally to everyone to

  597. this very day if you are sitting in here

  598. the fact that you frustrate yourself say

  599. thank you adam because it's his fault

  600. he brought well we can't we can't blame

  601. him too much because it's our fault just

  602. as much right we're accountable for our

  603. own sin but but but the truth of it is

  604. he brought sin and passed down all of us

  605. all the problems we see in our world all

  606. the all the junk we see in our world

  607. today it's because of the fact that sin

  608. was brought in this world and spread to

  609. everyone

  610. and what we see today is a result

  611. brokenness and and war and death and

  612. disease and struggles and strife all

  613. because of

  614. sin

  615. however

  616. jump down to verse 15 this is where it

  617. gets good

  618. but there's a great difference between

  619. adam's sin and god's gracious gift for

  620. the sin of this one man adam brought

  621. death to many but even greater is god's

  622. wonderful grace and his gift of

  623. forgiveness to many through this other

  624. man jesus christ and the result of god's

  625. gracious gift is very different from the

  626. result of that one man's sin for adam

  627. said love the condemnation but god's

  628. free gift leads to our being made right

  629. with god even though we were guilty of

  630. many sins

  631. for the sin of this one man adam caused

  632. death to rule over many but even greater

  633. is god's wonderful grace and his gift of

  634. righteousness for all who receive it

  635. will live in triumph over sin and death

  636. through this one man jesus christ yes

  637. adam's one sin brings condemnation for

  638. everyone but christ one act of

  639. righteousness brings a right

  640. relationship with god and new life for

  641. everyone because one person disobeyed

  642. god many became sinners but because one

  643. other person obeyed god many will become

  644. righteous

  645. and so what jesus did on the cross

  646. essentially is this

  647. he died for sin itself

  648. that sin that adam brought into the

  649. world that curse of sin that spread to

  650. all people jesus died so they could

  651. cancel out

  652. what adam brought into the world you get

  653. that right now the question is is how is

  654. it applied then to

  655. people because he says here in verse 14

  656. for that by that one offer he forever

  657. made those who are the those

  658. it's not everybody in the world it's

  659. those that have placed their faith in

  660. jesus christ in his life death and

  661. resurrection and made him lord and

  662. savior over their lives

  663. that's who jesus finished work on the

  664. cross

  665. applies to

  666. so if you know jesus

  667. what he did on the cross now applies to

  668. you that that that curse of sin in your

  669. life has been canceled

  670. now

  671. he says

  672. he has made perfect so by that one offer

  673. he has made perfect those second

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  674. corinthians chapter 5 and verse 17 says

  675. if anyone is in christ he is a new

  676. creation old things have passed away and

  677. behold all things have become

  678. new

  679. if you know jesus you are not the same

  680. person as you were before you know jesus

  681. you may have the same skin you may look

  682. the same

  683. in the mirror depending on when you got

  684. saved it was a long time ago you may

  685. look a little older

  686. but

  687. you're not the same person

  688. you were spiritually reborn

  689. before christ

  690. the bible tells us we were people

  691. controlled by satan destined for hell

  692. spiritually dead

  693. after christ we have been given new

  694. birth new life and we are eternal beings

  695. headed for eternal life

  696. in heaven all because of the fact that

  697. what jesus did on the cross

  698. counts for us

  699. applies to our life colossians chapter 1

    Colossians 1:3

  700. verse 3 13 says for he

  701. rescued us from the domain of darkness

  702. and transferred us into the kingdom of

  703. his beloved son so god rescued us from

  704. the hands of satan

  705. and

  706. replaced us into the hands of jesus how

  707. is this possible second corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  708. chapter 5 and verse 21 god made him

  709. speaking of jesus who knew no sin to be

  710. sin for us that we might become the

  711. righteousness of god in him so on the

  712. cross an incredible thing happened jesus

  713. pays the debt of sin

  714. defeats sin defeats the curse of sin

  715. completely right and because of that

  716. because of his death because of his

  717. resurrection the completed work of

  718. salvation this great transaction is made

  719. when a person comes to faith in jesus

  720. he took our sin to the cross

  721. and guess what we got in exchange when

  722. we came to faith in christ

  723. his perfection

  724. see what what made christ

  725. death so effectual on the cross

  726. it was the fact that he lived a perfect

  727. life

  728. that old testament law that i talked

  729. about a little bit ago the bible talks

  730. about how christ came under that law

  731. for a reason

  732. he obeyed literally everything to the to

  733. the t to the period

  734. perfectly in his life

  735. the only one in all of history to be

  736. able to do that

  737. he didn't have to die but he willingly

  738. died right and so his perfect life is

  739. then

  740. transferred to us

  741. who have made him lord and savior and so

  742. when it says that he has made perfect

  743. forever that's what it's talking about

  744. we have the transferred righteousness

  745. righteousness of christ it's the idea of

  746. imputed righteousness given to us by him

  747. transferred to our lives so that when

  748. god sees us right now in this moment he

  749. sees

  750. the perfection of his son

  751. right now that's not someday that's

  752. right now god sees

  753. the perfect righteousness of christ for

  754. those of us who know jesus as

  755. savior

  756. colossians 2 14 tells us that he

  757. canceled the record of the charges

  758. against us and took it away by nailing

  759. it to the

  760. cross

  761. what an amazing

  762. thing that is

  763. what's amazing is even

  764. in ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  765. in verse 6 we see this picture says he

  766. raised us up

  767. from the dead along with christ and

  768. seated us with him in the heavenly realm

  769. because we are united with christ it's

  770. speaking of christians that were alive

  771. at the time

  772. so the apostle paul reading to this

  773. writing to this ephesian church he's

  774. telling them if you know christ you are

  775. seated presently spiritually with christ

  776. in heaven you're already there

  777. when it says he has made perfect our our

  778. salvation is secure our place in heaven

  779. is secure as christians

  780. like how's that even possible

  781. we're not even there yet and yet we're

  782. there how does that work out

  783. there's a lot of crazy stuff like that

  784. in the bible but yet

  785. by faith we believe it because it says

  786. it to be true

  787. in fact hebrews chapter 10 and verse 10

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  788. a few verses before this one says

  789. god's will was for us to be made holy by

  790. the sacrifice of the body of jesus

  791. christ once for all time and so when you

  792. came to faith in jesus not only were

  793. your sins that you had done in the past

  794. forgiven

  795. any sin you will ever commit

  796. has already been forgiven

  797. isn't that crazy

  798. we are presently perfect

  799. in god's sight

  800. and you know what that means

  801. as romans chapter 8 and verse 1 says

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  802. there is therefore no condemnation for

  803. those of us who are in christ jesus

  804. it doesn't matter what satan speaks into

  805. our mind because you know what the bible

  806. says we're perfect

  807. the condemnation we feel in our lives is

  808. not the voice of god as the voice of

  809. satan

  810. ephesians chapter 9

  811. verses 27-28

  812. it says each person is destined to die

  813. once and after that comes judgment so

  814. also christ was offered once for all

  815. time as a sacrifice to take away the

  816. sins of many people and he will come

  817. again however not to deal with our sins

  818. but to bring salvation to all who

  819. eagerly wait for him when we see jesus

  820. it's not to be condemned he's not if you

  821. know christ his judgment is no longer

  822. upon you he's going to receive you as

  823. his own

  824. and that is an incredible thing to think

  825. about

  826. so that's our present state right now

  827. however the rest of that verse says

  828. he has perf made perfect forever those

  829. who are being made holy and so we have

  830. this like conundrum right this

  831. paradoxical thought that we're all we

  832. are perfect and we're not quite there

  833. yet so what is this talking about well

  834. spiritually positionally in heaven we're

  835. made perfect however practically in our

  836. everyday lives we have a long ways to go

  837. before we look like jesus

  838. does that make sense

  839. and this is what's called this process

  840. of sanctification right big word that

  841. simply means we are mom of my moment day

  842. by day

  843. being made into the likeness of jesus

  844. if you can picture a piece of rock the

  845. idea is

  846. there's little chips being taken out of

  847. it all the time in our lives

  848. and there's a there's a there's a

  849. sculpture a perfect sculpture at the end

  850. of it

  851. and when it's done it's going to be

  852. perfect

  853. because it's going to look like jesus

  854. michelangelo the famous sculptor once

  855. said this every block of stone has a

  856. statue in it inside of it

  857. and it's the task of the sculptor

  858. to discover it

  859. what's interesting about the second half

  860. of this verse those who are being made

  861. holy is actually in a tense it's called

  862. the passive tense in the greek language

  863. which means that that we are the ones

  864. receiving

  865. the being made holy does that make sense

  866. so that the being made holy is not

  867. something that that we can accomplish on

  868. our own it's actually an outside source

  869. that is causing this in our lives who do

  870. you think that outside source is

  871. the lord

  872. he is the one making us

  873. holy in our practical lives day by day

  874. chipping away the rough edges of our

  875. lives

  876. slowly making us look more and more like

  877. jesus every day week and year that

  878. passes

  879. philippians chapter 1 and verse 6 tells

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  880. us i am certain that god who began the

  881. good work within you will continue his

  882. work until it is finished that's the

  883. hope we have as christians

  884. when it looks like our all our life is

  885. full of blunders and mistakes and

  886. there's no way in the world i'm ever

  887. going to get anywhere to my spiritual

  888. walk because i feel like a failure

  889. constantly guess what that's not the

  890. voice of god that's the voice of satan

  891. and we can't say i'm never going to get

  892. there

  893. don't say that because guess what it

  894. ain't up to you because you belong to

  895. the lord now and he's the one that says

  896. he will complete it

  897. he will do it no matter what it takes in

  898. our lives he is day by day by day week

  899. by week by week making this more and

  900. more like his son

  901. the question is how does that work

  902. how does he do it well there's the

  903. numbers to what there's a number of ways

  904. the lord does that one is mainly through

  905. his holy spirit

  906. the holy spirit that is that indwells us

  907. as god's people the bible tells us that

  908. when we got saved the spirit of the

  909. living god made us home inside of us as

  910. his people

  911. the bible talks about how the when the

  912. holy spirit comes he convicts

  913. what does that mean to be convicted it

  914. means when we get into god's word and we

  915. start reading bible and and we and we

  916. see stuff like we're supposed to be

  917. patient and something inside of us says

  918. you ain't very patient

  919. where do you think that little voice

  920. came from

  921. it's not the angel on your shoulder it's

  922. the spirit of the living god inside of

  923. you saying you got some work to do in

  924. this area of your life let's start doing

  925. it right and so through the spirit of

  926. god through the word of god as we as we

  927. get in it as we read it we see areas of

  928. our life that boy we just don't quite

  929. match up to perfection like we're

  930. supposed to so guess what i got to do i

  931. got to start working on that particular

  932. area of my life and and so i begin this

  933. endeavor starting to work on this

  934. particular area of my life but but man

  935. it's hard

  936. and why do i stumble over my own feet

  937. all the time

  938. isn't it real i mean the struggle is

  939. real

  940. but slowly day by day week by week year

  941. by year

  942. it's amazing that some of the things

  943. that struggle with 10 years ago i don't

  944. struggle with anymore

  945. things that i never thought i'd get over

  946. i don't struggle with it anymore why is

  947. that because the spirit of living god

  948. inside of me day by day week by week

  949. year by year is making me more and more

  950. like jesus

  951. happens through his spirit through his

  952. word

  953. happens many times through his church

  954. the bible talks all over the place about

  955. how we're supposed to build one another

  956. up and strengthen one another all the

  957. spiritual gifts we've been given by god

  958. or for what the building up of his

  959. church

  960. helping us grow and mature in our faith

  961. to gain a knowledge and understanding of

  962. his words so that we can be convicted by

  963. the spirit and be moved and changed in

  964. the image of god that's another way that

  965. he sanctifies us that he makes us more

  966. holy another way that he does it is

  967. through times where we step out in faith

  968. and he meets us where we're at and we

  969. and he proves himself faithful just like

  970. his word says and boy we go we we take

  971. that step of faith and and god meets us

  972. there and we go wow

  973. now i want to take a bigger step and god

  974. calls us to a bigger step and guess what

  975. happens god meets us right there again

  976. and step by step leap by leap god begins

  977. to grow our faith because he proves

  978. himself faithful which causes us to

  979. trust him more and guess what another

  980. piece of that stone chipped off

  981. look a little bit more like

  982. jesus

  983. but i tell you something

  984. there's a couple other ways that aren't

  985. all that fun

  986. that help us look more like jesus and

  987. one of the difficulties in our life

  988. don't you wish he didn't have

  989. difficulties

  990. he didn't have trials he didn't have

  991. sorrows that we didn't lose people that

  992. we didn't have bad things happen in our

  993. life catastrophes

  994. but they're real aren't they

  995. well then why would god do that

  996. you know many people will walk away from

  997. god because of the struggles in their

  998. lives when the but what they fail to

  999. understand is those very struggles that

1000. god's allowing for the purpose of

  1001. perfecting them

  1002. james chapter 1 verses 2 through 4

    James 1:2–4

1003. says brothers and sisters when troubles

1004. of any kind come your way consider an

1005. opportunity for great joy for you know

1006. that when your faith is tested your

1007. endurance has a chance to grow and so

1008. let it go grow for when your endurance

1009. is fully developed you will be listen

  1010. perfect

1011. and complete lacking in nothing

1012. so when god allows those things in our

  1013. lives

  1014. it's for a purpose

1015. is to draw us closer to him

1016. who knows we learn quicker through

1017. blunders than we do through victories

  1018. it's just a fact

1019. and the fact of it is he even grows us

  1020. through our own sins

1021. like what like god uses our sins to make

1022. us look more like jesus how does that

1023. work out that don't seem very bible-like

  1024. does it

1025. that he'll use our sins to make us look

1026. more like jesus how does that

  1027. but he does

1028. have you ever dealt with a sin it got

1029. you to the point where it finally broke

1030. you it got you to the point where you're

1031. like god i can't do this anymore you

1032. need to help me with this and rest and

  1033. he finally does

1034. and now you're on the other side of it

1035. and you know what inevitably happens

1036. somebody else will come into your life

1037. that is struggling with the exact same

1038. thing that you just dealt with

1039. and guess what you get to do

1040. you get to come alongside of them and be

  1041. the church

1042. and encourage them and tell them look

1043. here's what i dealt with but let me tell

1044. you what god can do

1045. god look he's using even our sins when

1046. romans 8 28 says that god works all

1047. things for the good of those who love

1048. him or those who are called according to

1049. a purpose he means that even the sorrows

1050. even the struggles even the sins he is

1051. using all of those things to make us

1052. look more and more like jesus

1053. in heaven we're already perfect

1054. practically we're not here there yet but

1055. the road from now to the end of our life

1056. is this process of sanctification where

1057. every week day month year that passes

1058. chip by chip by chip by chip he's making

1059. us look more like jesus and there's

1060. going to be a day that we stand before

  1061. him that we will

  1062. look like jesus

1063. it's not just going to be some standing

1064. in heaven that's going gonna be the

  1065. actual thing

  1066. of standing before him

1067. what a beautiful picture this verse

  1068. depicts

  1069. however here's the application

1070. we have to accept it as true

1071. and can i tell you something that's the

  1072. hardest

  1073. part of it

  1074. because i don't feel very perfect

1075. anyone else have that problem

1076. in the midst of your flaws and

  1077. frustrations and struggles

1078. you ever look at the mirror and go what

  1079. is wrong with you

1080. why do you struggle like this all the

  1081. time

1082. why don't you get over yourself yeah

1083. we have to accept it

1084. either the bible is speaking truth or

  1085. speaking a lie

1086. and if it says that our standing right

  1087. now

1088. before god is perfect holy and righteous

1089. how about we just accept it

  1090. and believe it

1091. the apostle paul wrote this

  1092. romans 7 21-25

1093. he says i have discovered this principle

1094. of life that when i want to do what is

1095. right i inevitably do what is wrong

1096. i love god's law with all my heart but

  1097. there's another power within me that's

1098. at war with my mind this power makes me

1099. a slave to the sin that is still within

1100. me and he says this i mean this is the

1101. apostle paul who wrote the great portion

1102. of the new testament he says oh what a

  1103. miserable person

  1104. that i am

1105. who will free me from this life that is

  1106. dominated by sin

  1107. and death

1108. and then he says thank god

1109. the answer is jesus christ

  1110. our lord

1111. can i tell you something what was true

  1112. for him

1113. is true for me and you

1114. and we have to accept that as

  1115. truth

1116. and then you know what we need to do

1117. we need to take some time

1118. and literally just to sit in awe of that

  1119. truth

1120. do you ever do that

1121. when you read something in scripture you

  1122. just go

  1123. wow

1124. and just shut up for a few minutes and

  1125. let it sink in

1126. that is so important especially with

  1127. this truth

1128. to let it sink in like god i know me i'm

  1129. not perfect

1130. but he said yes you are

1131. because of jesus yes you are

1132. and you're not only perfect you're mine

1133. you're my child because ephesians

1134. chapter once we've been adopted into the

  1135. family of god

1136. he has placed his name upon us

  1137. he has promised us

  1138. a heavenly inheritance

  1139. that's amazing

1140. as david wrote in psalm 139

1141. he says how precious are your thoughts

1142. about me oh god that cannot be numbered

1143. i can't even count them because they

1144. outnumber the grains of sand

  1145. in this psalm

1146. david king david is pondering his life

1147. and in all the ways god has been with

  1148. him since

1149. before the foundations of the earth were

1150. ever laid he told me he talked about he

  1151. how he knew him

1152. when he was in his mother's wombs it was

1153. the hands of god that was

  1154. forming him

1155. how no matter where he went

1156. god would be with him and as he pondered

  1157. these things

  1158. he just

  1159. says wow

1160. how awesome are you lord

1161. that's so important in our lives

1162. to let the word of god sink into our

  1163. soul

1164. so often we we hear amazing things like

1165. this and we get like this little

1166. fluttery feeling inside of us and it

1167. goes here and out here and then nothing

1168. ever changes we need to like truly

1169. internalize these things because what i

1170. can tell you is when we internalize

1171. those things it will change us forever

  1172. because

1173. our christian faith will come to have a

  1174. whole new meaning

  1175. in that moment

1176. we'll understand that the christian life

  1177. is not about do's and don'ts it's not

1178. about coming to church and reading our

1179. bible doing these things because god

1180. says so because i really want him to be

  1181. happy with me

1182. that's not the christian life

1183. those things are important it's what

  1184. we're supposed to do

1185. but that's not what makes success

  1186. acceptable

1187. can i tell you something if you've sat

1188. for 24 hours a day for the rest of your

1189. life and did nothing but stare at the

1190. bible and talk to the lord as long as

1191. you could handle that can i tell you

1192. something you wouldn't be any more

1193. acceptable to god than you are right now

  1194. in this moment

1195. and it's that realization that

1196. understanding that will transform us

1197. because now the reason that i read my

1198. bible the reason that i prayed the

1199. reason that i come to church the reason

1200. that i serve people the reason that i

1201. evangelize is not to get god's approval

1202. it's because i want to glorify him with

1203. my life because all he has done for me

1204. that will transform your christian life

1205. when you quit trying to gain god's

1206. acceptance and just believe that you

1207. already have it and then use that as a

1208. catalyst to live your life out for him

1209. it will change and transform everything

1210. and then once we do that

1211. how we can respond to the lord is this

  1212. although

1213. he who began to work in us is going to

1214. be the one that completes us although

1215. we're the recipient of his sanctifying

1216. work here's what we can do we can help

  1217. accelerate the process along

1218. meaning we can do it one way or the

1219. other we can do it kicking or screaming

1220. or we can do it willingly one way or the

1221. other guess what's going to happen he's

1222. god we're not just going to get done

1223. we're going to do that the hard way

1224. we're going to do it the easy way you

1225. ever have that conversation with your

  1226. kids

1227. god and our father in heaven says the

  1228. same thing

1229. one way or the other it's going to

1230. happen so we can we can either kick and

1231. scream or we can accelerate the process

1232. along meaning if we want to accelerate

1233. it we can submit ourselves to the

  1234. authority of christ

1235. galatians 5 16 says walk by the spirit

1236. and you will not gratify the desires of

  1237. the flesh galatians 5 24 and 25 those

1238. who belong to christ have nailed their

1239. passions and desires and their sinful

1240. nature to the cross and have crucified

1241. them there since we are living by the

1242. spirit let us follow the spirits leading

1243. in every part of our lives romans

    Romans 8:5–6

  1244. chapter 8 verses 5 through 6 those who

1245. are dominated by the sinful nature think

1246. about simple things but those who are

1247. controlled by the holy spirit think only

1248. about things that please the spirit so

1249. letting your sinful nature control your

1250. mind leads to death letting the spirit

1251. control your mind leads to life and

  1252. peace

1253. so guess what we can do it one of two

1254. ways we can say lord i'm going to submit

  1255. to you

1256. my life is in your hands i'm chaining

1257. myself to you lead me guide me help me

1258. to live my life for you god i'm going to

1259. get into your word i'm going to start

1260. applying your word because i want to

1261. live my life in a way that honors you i

1262. want to live my life in a way that makes

1263. me look more and more like jesus

1264. and god i'm doing it

  1265. willingly

1266. gotta tell you something that weighs a

1267. whole lot easier and a whole lot more

  1268. fun

1269. the fact is god sees the finished you

1270. but the finished us won't be seen by us

  1271. until we see jesus

1272. and in that day as we look back in our

1273. lives we will see everything from a

1274. different perspective we will in that

1275. day see how the trials and the

1276. challenges of our lives shaped us

1277. how the sins and struggles helped

1278. develop our character and how all the

1279. different seasons in our life

  1280. intersected to

1281. mold us and to shape us into the person

  1282. god saw

1283. before the foundations of the world were

  1284. ever laid

1285. we are a finished work

  1286. in progress

  1287. but i praise god

1288. that i'm in his hands

  1289. amen

  1290. let's pray

1291. heavenly father thank you so much for

1292. this time this night lord for your word

  1293. for this incredible truth

1294. lord god i just pray that it would sink

1295. way down in deep our hearts and minds

  1296. and souls

1297. god for the christian here lord i pray

  1298. that

1299. they would just be able to grasp

1300. that they couldn't be any love than they

1301. are more than they are right now

1302. they couldn't be loved more

1303. no matter what they do than they are

1304. right now in this moment they couldn't

1305. be any more acceptable to you than they

1306. are right now yes we may not be perfect

  1307. yet

1308. in the practical areas of our life god

1309. but you see us as righteous lord let us

  1310. believe it

1311. in our lives let us

1312. choose to walk in a way that honors you

1313. choose that to walk in a way that allows

1314. this this process of us becoming more

  1315. like jesus each year

1316. but father there may be a person in here

1317. that's never even made the decision to

1318. follow christ and for that person lord i

1319. pray that they would take the first step

1320. that first step of receiving jesus is

  1321. our lord and savior

1322. god your word says we can simply come in

  1323. faith

1324. and talk to you in prayer

1325. and your god your word tells us if we

1326. will ask jesus to come into our lives to

1327. forgive us of our sins to come in to be

1328. our lord and our savior

1329. believing upon his death and

1330. resurrection that we'll be saved

1331. you'll forgive us of those sins that you

1332. will save us and make us yours and if

1333. anybody here in this place never made

  1334. that decision god tonight

1335. in these moments we have remaining god

1336. let them just cry out in faith

  1337. and receive jesus

1338. lord we love you we thank you

1339. and we pray these things in the precious

  1340. name of our lord

  1341. amen

  1342. as we close tonight

1343. we are going to sing a song

  1344. and i'm
