  1. Hello everyone. This is Ricky and you're

  2. listening to River City Church talks where we will take a

  3. deeper dive into the happenings that coming up and the jetzt to

  4. be of River City. Join us as I sit down with our

  5. pastors ministers, and leaders to talk River City.

  6. Today, we are joined with our associate pastor.

  7. Nick Fox, Nick, how are you today?

  8. I'm good. Ricky, how are you doing?

  9. I'm doing great doing great. Just getting ready to go on.

  10. Sabbatical like the rest of the church in the month of August,

  11. we have decided that we were going to take a break.

  12. Break and rest in Jesus and kind of push it and see what God is

  13. speaking to us. And I think that's a really cool

  14. thing that, you know, as a church, we're all doing the

  15. exact same thing. So no extra events and August

  16. were just doing Sunday morning stuff and Sunday afternoon stuff

  17. but what is, what a sabbatical mean to you.

  18. Nick? What.

  19. Yeah, I think that's important, right?

  20. As we as a church, go into this month and we throw around this

  21. word sabbatical and hopefully Just assume that people know

  22. what that means, right and and I think as a church it's important

  23. for us to kind of Hit the pause button, but not just to stop, I

  24. guess is the thing right? Like not it doesn't mean do

  25. nothing, right? I think it is is intentional

  26. rest and I think it is a time to really focus on your

  27. relationship with Jesus and the idea is to take away all of the

  28. things, right? It's almost like it's almost

  29. like fasting, right, right. So you taking away the He's

  30. things that would otherwise occupy your time but then you

  31. fill them with Jesus and it's kind of this awareness.

  32. And so you spend it focusing on him and delighting in him and

  33. and maybe finding that place, you know, in nature where you

  34. see Jesus in nature or you see it in time with your family or

  35. something like that. And that's the hope this month

  36. is that, we just peel back a lot of the scheduling and the events

  37. and allow people more time to just rest.

  38. So it says God had finished his work and And has an as it had

  39. been. So on the seventh day, he rested

  40. from all his work, God is clear about the value and the Holiness

  41. of rest. Yeah, and it's something that he

  42. commands us to do correct, because it helps us push forward

  43. into the spirit and get closer to God and see who he wants us

  44. to be. And I always read that in

  45. Genesis, you know, God had finished the work and that he

  46. had been doing and on the seventh day, he rested.

  47. I'm like what? Distressed look for God.

  48. Yeah. And you know, you got to

  49. understand this is this is the creator of the universe.

  50. I don't think that he rested, because he was tired, it's not

  51. about being tired, right? It is a, this kind of

  52. satisfaction with his creation and the idea that that was

  53. enough, right? Like, that's enough, I'm done.

  54. And so I'm going to rest. I'm going to sit back and focus

  55. on this side. This creation and I think that

  56. we can, we can kind of mirror that a lot in the same way too.

  57. I think that people sometimes think that in order to rest, it

  58. means they have to just sit on the couch and stare at a wall,

  59. right? And that's not what it is.

  60. You know, it's this delight, you know, if we take even just from

  61. that passage is this delight in creation and so where where is

  62. it in the world that you see God, right?

  63. You know, where is it that you encounter the face of Jesus?

  64. Is it in serving? Is it in nature?

  65. You know, what does that look like for you?

  66. And what does it look like to not?

  67. That's the thing, you know, rest is supposed to rejuvenate and

  68. refresh us and it doesn't mean that it's like, you know,

  69. sitting down and doing nothing yet, it's whatever rejuvenates,

  70. you and refreshes. You like, for some people, it

  71. could be being in nature for some people to be sitting on

  72. their couch for other people to be playing golf.

  73. Yep. Or you know, swimming or

  74. whatever it is that it is. But it's not just a set thing

  75. that you know. He says, just don't move.

  76. Yeah, yeah, no. It's doing the good, right?

  77. And it's not legalistic, it's not this.

  78. This idea of you can't carry your bed mat on the Sabbath,

  79. right? Otherwise, you're punished,

  80. right. It's, it's more than that it's

  81. deeper than that. It's really an intentional time

  82. of experiencing and encountering him.

  83. And I think it kind of pushes back to where we just wrapped up

  84. in our fruit of the spirit sermon series.

  85. You know, you really should be rooted in the father and yoked

  86. in Jesus. And then in step with that

  87. spirit. Because that rest will help with

  88. all of that. So Nick, you etat on

  89. self-control, which is the last fruit of the spirit.

  90. I thought it was really good because it helped me.

  91. Remember that the fruit of the spirit is singular, it's not you

  92. get kindness, or you get gentleness, or you get this or

  93. you get that, it's all of it together, you know, those are

  94. the virtues of the fruit of the spirit and self-control being

  95. the last one. And it's the Artist one, and you

  96. and made a point of saying that, that word self-control in the

  97. context of the fruit of the spirit is backward.

  98. Yeah. That it's control of self.

  99. Can you expand on that? Yeah, sure.

  100. That, you know, I kind of came in the studying and researching

  101. and all that, you know? And I was going to like

  102. everybody else sounds super intelligent and throwing the

  103. Greek for self-control, but it's really actually kind of boring.

  104. It's just really truly self-control, so I decided that

  105. really wasn't Worth going into, but this whole idea that, you

  106. know, we use these other terms, you know, self-esteem and

  107. self-confidence, and self motivation.

  108. And those words really do begin with self, right?

  109. And so, I think that just because of our language, we say

  110. self-control and we think it's this thing that our self is is

  111. in control. And really the reality is that

  112. it's backwards where when we look at this biblically, we're

  113. look at this. In terms of the spirit, Really

  114. more about controlling the self. And this idea that in order to

  115. have self-control, you actually need to Lose Yourself to the

  116. spirit and that was a really big eye-opener for me while I was

  117. studying. Just, you know, the idea of

  118. laying yourself down letting yourself go in order to have

  119. more control, you know, I think that as a culture as a society,

  120. this idea is that, you know, it's more about It's more about

  121. what yourself can do, right? You know?

  122. And if I just buckle down, and if I just, you know, grid it out

  123. and I'm going to be better and I'm going to have more and I

  124. want to be more successful and really like so many things in

  125. the Bible and when we read it Christianity backwards from

  126. society, it's right, it's often opposite right?

  127. You said something also yesterday, you know God gave us

  128. Troll in order to fight the Temptation Of The Flesh.

  129. Because Flash is immediate. Yeah, I want that now because I

  130. want this now, you know, I can't wait, but that self-control is

  131. no, the, the facet that gives us the other fruit, the gentleness,

  132. the kindness, the all the virtues that come from it.

  133. You read you paraphrased into message yesterday, the passage

  134. in Galatians which talks about all the, you know, the works.

  135. The Works of The Flash, you know, and reading that and just

  136. reading it again. Now, it really opens my eyes to

  137. what that passage really means. Because you read the passage and

  138. Galatians and it's like, okay, let me in this Spirit, you know,

  139. all of the, you know, the debauchery and the sound of that

  140. all the big words, but then you read it in the message and it's,

  141. you know, just joyless, you know, frenzied and joyless grabs

  142. for happiness, you know, trinkets?

  143. Yeah. I know paranoid loneliness.

  144. Competition. Those are all words that we know

  145. those are all words that we live with.

  146. Yeah, yeah. I think that's the value right?

  147. In in using something like the message paraphrase.

  148. Like I would never recommend that.

  149. That's the only Bible you use. But sometimes you know in

  150. passages like these, it's really good to kind of just look over

  151. and see kind of in this plain English, right?

  152. How it's phrased, you know? Because and the plan I think I

  153. made I think I'm I mean, you've kind of forget what you say when

  154. you're on stage sometimes, hopefully because that means

  155. that the spirits speaking and not you but, you know, the this

  156. idea that we read, there's so many of these passages that we

  157. read, and I think we just get used to the words, right.

  158. You know, and that's even just the fruit of the spirit, right?

  159. And a lot of times when, when I'm on stage or even when

  160. Jason's on stage, you know, you started.

  161. It's like, you know, the fruit of the spirit is love, joy,

  162. peace, pedal. And then you just kind of put a

  163. little bit for the rest of it because everybody knows.

  164. Right? And you know, you look at

  165. spiritual gifts, you look at all of these things and there's just

  166. some passages that we kind of just we kind of just blow

  167. through them because we've read them so many times and I think

  168. that's the case here. You know, you were so focused on

  169. the fruit of the spirit. We don't often look at the

  170. passage about the works of the Flesh and even if we do,

  171. there's, you know, and you even mentioned, there's words in

  172. there like licentiousness and debauchery and carousing.

  173. And there's, there's these words that Like, I mean it dictionary

  174. to figure out what it is. Yeah.

  175. And you know I know that they're not great but I mean I've never

  176. really said that I was a licentious person so you kind of

  177. just take the north, right. Yeah.

  178. But then when you break it down like that in the message and you

  179. read it, it just man it really punched me in the heart when I

  180. read it in that paraphrase because I just it seems so

  181. relevant exactly. And I like the way that the

  182. message kind of wrapped up that that section of verse and I

  183. could go on. Yeah.

  184. Yeah. These aren't the only things,

  185. there are more. Yeah and I think in most other

  186. like NIV the ESV and other translations it says whatever

  187. the last one is and it says and the like right, you know, and

  188. that's how it's just kind of this like look I've given you a

  189. list, there's so many more but these are the big ones, the big,

  190. you know, works of the flesh that the spirits battling.

  191. Then you also mentioned what the fruit of the spirit is not

  192. correct. This kind of guy punches.

  193. Well, Not a standard that we have to try to really, really

  194. hard to achieve. Not about outward activities,

  195. but about cultivating a spirit surrendered, heart that produces

  196. this fruit. Not a legalistic command laid on

  197. our shoulders. I think people that are in

  198. church and that have been in church for a very long time.

  199. Sometimes forget that our works is in our Salvation.

  200. Yeah. The more stuff that we do in

  201. church just because it's Church. Does it mean that we're any

  202. closer that person who just found Jesus?

  203. Correct. Yeah.

  204. And I think what? I was hoping a big takeaway

  205. would be as that. This this isn't something that,

  206. you know, if you just do it enough it'll take hold right.

  207. You know, it's not just like well if I'm just if I just force

  208. myself to be kind and maybe I'll become kind.

  209. It's again, it's the opposite, you know, this starts inside, it

  210. starts with this idea that If I am pressed into the spirit, if

  211. I'm really truly in relationship with Jesus, which is where it

  212. needs to begin. Then the beauty is that the

  213. spirit manifests these virtues in us.

  214. And so it's not about being more kind, it's about becoming that

  215. way and you become that way because of the spirit.

  216. And, you know, it's we can talk about what things are a lot.

  217. But I think sometimes it's helpful to look at what they're

  218. not and the beauty man, and I say it again.

  219. Because I think it's beautiful because it takes the pressure

  220. off. Is you don't just have to try

  221. harder, right? We're a try-hard society, right?

  222. It's try harder and you'll be better and not with this, this

  223. isn't the thing that you just have to try harder for it's the

  224. thing that really you need to try less, right?

  225. You need to just spend time with Jesus and walk in the spirit and

  226. the more you do that, the more you become those Use of the

  227. fruit of the spirit. Yeah.

  228. And that's the other thing about it being a singular spirit,

  229. it's, you know, singular fruit. Is that they all come together.

  230. You can't be more gentle. Yeah.

  231. And less kind. Yeah.

  232. You can't, you know, be one without all of them.

  233. Yeah. And that's, you know, the

  234. ingredients analogy that I used. It's, it's you can't just have

  235. love joy, peace. And then throw in Anger, right?

  236. It's just doesn't work that way. Now you You may feel that maybe

  237. you have less Joy at times, you may feel that your piece isn't

  238. there at times, but I think that really speaks to this battle

  239. right between the Flesh and the spirit and the idea that you

  240. kind of have an idea. And if I'm wrong, then I'm sure

  241. that Jesus will tell me someday. But the way the way I

  242. interpreted is you kind of have an indication of which one's

  243. winning in this battle right based on which you see more of

  244. right, you know, knowledge. Of the tools.

  245. Yeah, exactly. And you know, do you see more

  246. love and kindness and gentleness and joy and peace in your life?

  247. When the good news? Is that the spirits probably on

  248. The Winning Side? Conger went outside.

  249. Yeah but unfortunately if you see more of those works of the

  250. Flesh in your life, you know, these the idea of like never

  251. being satisfied and never having peace and this paranoid

  252. loneliness, right? The way that it was Weird.

  253. If you see more of those than unfortunately, maybe you're not

  254. pressed in enough, right? And maybe the flesh is winning.

  255. Yeah. And that's, I think it's kind of

  256. nice to have an indicator to look at to give us an idea of

  257. hey I'm really tipping the scale, the wrong way.

  258. So maybe I should spend more time with you.

  259. In the thing is is an outward indicator as well other people

  260. see it. Yeah.

  261. And other people can can you know call you on it?

  262. I guess you know you just have Be willing to allow them to do

  263. that, you know, to save people in your life, you know.

  264. A how am I doing? Yeah.

  265. Well, you came back to the analogy of your cooking, Nick,

  266. which I'm going to be like, doubting Thomas.

  267. I'm not going to believe it until I actually feel it and

  268. taste it, okay? Because you said you are you

  269. love to cook and whatnot? What is your favorite dish to

  270. cook? Oh man, I really love cooking,

  271. pretty much everything I really like Italian food.

  272. Dude, I would argue that, I make a pretty mean lasagna.

  273. Okay, it's really one of my favorite dishes, you know?

  274. I would almost always immediately answer Pizza, you

  275. know, like, what's your favorite pizza?

  276. The more I think about it. And it's one of those things

  277. that, like, when I have it, I'm like, oh man.

  278. Yeah, no, I like this way better.

  279. Yeah. I like pizza.

  280. Yeah. Lasagna is the thing.

  281. I enjoy making Asian food a lot. My Says that I make really good

  282. tacos like soft tacos, crunchy tacos, either.

  283. I think it's more about what goes in them.

  284. I think that what they're, you know, talking about.

  285. But but all of that to say, because I kind of always wanted

  286. to go to culinary school. There's the same, there's a

  287. little secret for you. Yeah, I really would love to be

  288. like a baker or like a pastry. Chef pastry chef.

  289. Yeah. And I've really enjoyed

  290. desserts. And I like I like baking.

  291. Well, as long as you don't put the secret ingredient in, your

  292. fruit of the spirit is cookies into the desert.

  293. I think it'd be fine. Never had for those that, don't

  294. know what I'm talking about. Go listen to Nick sermon here on

  295. the podcast channel that you're on as well.

  296. But Nick, you kind of alluded to and I think it's a great analogy

  297. that self-control being the last virtue of the fruit of the

  298. spirit is kind of like the Ask it that holds everything in, you

  299. know, it's like you said a cake as well.

  300. You know, you can't speaking about having some fruit and not

  301. the other virtues. You can't make a cake without

  302. flour. Yeah, you know you can sprinkle

  303. some wheat flour in it and it'll be a different kind of cake but

  304. you know it's not going to be that soft, you know, sponge cake

  305. that you you can make. And I think the analogy of Troll

  306. being the last fruit or last virtue to come really does bring

  307. it all back together for me. Yeah.

  308. Because it self control effects, all of those correct?

  309. Yeah, and I think that there is a reason, you know, I shared a

  310. shared some quotes in my message and it seems like this is this

  311. is a Timeless elusive Endeavor. Yeah, everybody it's everybody.

  312. Its Cultural, it is timeless, and in the point of reading,

  313. those quotes was not just, they're not just feel good

  314. quotes. The common theme is that This is

  315. impossible, right, right. And that, that all of those, all

  316. of those people that gave those quotes about self-control.

  317. The point was, you can do many, many great things in your life,

  318. but you're really only actually great if you can have

  319. self-control, right? And in that just tells me that

  320. man, this is this is one of the hardest things in our lives

  321. because, you know, in the world's not wrong, you are

  322. great. If you can have self control the

  323. problem. The world doesn't give you a way

  324. to do that, right? The gospel does, right?

  325. The this idea of, of Christianity and The Guiding of

  326. the spirit, it tells you not only do you need this thing, but

  327. here's how you get it, right? It's the fruit of the spirit and

  328. and I do think like you said and again, maybe one day I'll get to

  329. ask Paul but I think it was last on purpose because it does truly

  330. empower the other our virtues, you know, you've got to have

  331. self-control to be kind to everyone.

  332. It really does help to have self-control if you want to be

  333. gentle, you know. And if and so I kind of see it

  334. as this like empowering virtue when we talk about the fruit of

  335. the spirit and then again, maybe we speculate man, maybe maybe

  336. I'm wrong. Maybe there was really no reason

  337. for the order but it's That way for a reason.

  338. And I think and I think that's what it is.

  339. It's just it's the hardest one and it and it really does truly

  340. Empower all the others and I guess we'll have to ask Paul

  341. when we all get to heaven. And say you know my dude.

  342. So many questions was the purpose though.

  343. I yeah that's the one thing that I hope and pray that you know

  344. you know I make it there. Yeah.

  345. Right. Yes.

  346. But yeah to ask those questions to those.

  347. Saying, what did you mean - you know?

  348. Yeah. The the fear is like we spend

  349. all this time talking and doing this and he's like yeah I didn't

  350. mean it like that. Yeah you're like great I spent

  351. all my life thinking this and it wasn't that like but Paul I

  352. preached a sermon about this and he's like man you got it wrong.

  353. He's like yeah I was listening and well let's hope not, it

  354. wasn't about that at all. But no I'm Nick, you did it.

  355. Little job the whole teaching team did a phenomenal job with

  356. this series. It has been super impactful in

  357. my life listening to the different aspects of the fruit

  358. of the spirit and you know revamping my thinking process

  359. about those. So thank you so much for for

  360. leading that team for what you do at River City.

  361. And you know just kind of keeping us all in track when

  362. Jason and Natalie were on their sabbatical and sure.

  363. And I do briefly I just really do want to give a shout-out to

  364. the teaching team. Team, they're they're

  365. incredible. And they step up when we need

  366. them to. And, you know, the reality is

  367. that some of these people, they make it onstage, one time in an

  368. entire year, right? And and I get up a little bit

  369. more but you know, Jason he's up every week and he gets feedback,

  370. you know, and he can run, he can correct.

  371. Something that maybe he says or he can, you know, come back the

  372. next week and do something better than he thought.

  373. He did the previous week. And for most of the people on

  374. this team, they get to talk once a year.

  375. Here. And so that's a lot of pressure

  376. because that's what you're going to be remembered for.

  377. Yeah. Right.

  378. Is, is that message? You gave that one time during

  379. this one series? And they just really, man, they

  380. blew it out of the park and you got Jason Casey, Rebecca kuribon

  381. Greg, Logan and RJ strauch and they really truly.

  382. They just, we all worked really well together.

  383. Plan. This series, it was seamless.

  384. It really, was it flowed from from Jason's introduction at the

  385. very beginning, all through. And then your wrap up at the

  386. end, it was like just want like y'all wrote all your messages

  387. together, which I know that's not the case.

  388. But you know, the other thing that I would like to, you know,

  389. say about our teaching team, you know, I've been in other

  390. churches where the teaching pastors are all out and then,

  391. you know, the teaching team would come in and it's like, oh

  392. great, you know. And you get that sense of like,

  393. okay well the main path. Stop there.

  394. And it's not about the main Pastor, it's about the word that

  395. is You Know spoken that God has it should be, it should be yeah

  396. you know but here at our church it's just so refreshing that the

  397. entire teaching team. Yeah.

  398. Ra1 speakers. Yeah and it's not time that you

  399. want to take off church. Right.

  400. You know and and that's you know I think what you're talking

  401. about too. Is this idea that like hey lead

  402. pastors out for a month? That means we can skip church

  403. and I don't think and I love Jason.

  404. He's He's great. He's wonderful and he is a one

  405. teaching Pastor like he's incredible but there's not this

  406. huge letdown I guess is what I'm saying you know, where it's like

  407. man, Jason's out. So we're going to go on vacation

  408. wait until he gets back. They bring it man and it's

  409. really a time that you don't you don't want to miss.

  410. It's just unique perspectives and they're all great teachers.

  411. We're just we're absolutely blessed to have a teaching team

  412. as deep as we do. Yeah.

  413. I'm just really Really proud of them and grateful for them.

  414. They're they're amazing people. And what a blessing to the

  415. senior leadership as well to know that your church is in good

  416. hands. And the messages are going to be

  417. sound and biblically based. Yeah.

  418. And you don't have to worry about it.

  419. Yeah. You don't have to pay a speaker

  420. to come in and you don't ask, you know, another Pastor from

  421. another church to fill in for you or anything like that.

  422. No, they're, they're great. And like I said on Sunday there,

  423. they're always there on call, they're ready, you know, Chase.

  424. I'm sick. If I'm out, if we get to a place

  425. where and I think we had to do that once this year, actually,

  426. they're ready, and they do it on a moment's notice and they're

  427. just incredible to be able to craft and teach that quickly.

  428. I just so word to the wise if you see one of our teaching team

  429. members up to preach that Sunday, don't miss it, don't

  430. miss it because you're going to miss an amazing sermon Nick.

  431. You were in charge for the last month, while Jason and Natalie

  432. were out of town. If we had a vending machine here

  433. at the church, what three items. You put in it for me.

  434. Like what would I like to really be in it?

  435. Anything rhesus anything in fast.

  436. Great bars necrosis and not Ricci Reese's.

  437. That's and grown-up up north. Yeah, that's how everyone says,

  438. I know Ricci cups, I had a friend from New York and it's

  439. like, can I get some Reese's? I'm like, what are Reese's Ricci

  440. cups? No Reese, my favorite, absolute

  441. favorite. I like the fast-break bars,

  442. they've kind of overtaking, even the big cups for me.

  443. Okay, so good, I think I've had a fast.

  444. So if you, if you're listening to this and you want to make me

  445. really happy on the Sunday premium fast, break for.

  446. I would also like sparkling water of some sort like, because

  447. I'm just saying there's a refrigerated section in this

  448. vending machine, okay? Since I get to create it, okay?

  449. I would love for sparkling water to Pacheco or san Pellegrino

  450. really. And either of them, and let's go

  451. save. Let's do like a spicy trail mix

  452. of some sort. Okay, there now we have it all

  453. all the snacks out of the snack. So if you are hearing this,

  454. you'll know what to bring Nick. That was the whole point of that

  455. sighs. I assumed, I assume, would you

  456. go to space and travel if you could?

  457. Oh yeah, I think it would be incredible.

  458. I have it's so hard to explain because I on the surface.

  459. I want to say I'm afraid of heights but it's not.

  460. It's not that simple. Like I'm not scared of being

  461. high up, I'm afraid of falling. Okay.

  462. Yeah. Like I don't mind being on a

  463. mountain, I just don't want to be on the edge of the mountain,

  464. where there's a chance that I could fall off them, right?

  465. So yeah. And I love, I love being an

  466. airplanes. I don't like the take-off or the

  467. landing, but once I'm up, I'm fine.

  468. Yeah, I would I think, being in space would be pretty

  469. incredible. There's no risk of falling

  470. because it'll just flow. Just, you'll float into the

  471. nothing but you'll just flow. Correct?

  472. If you were given a thousand dollars to spend on your closest

  473. friend, what would you get them? What was that little you cleared

  474. your throat? Like it was when I do see you A

  475. tingle. Oh gosh thousand dollars.

  476. Okay. Thousand dollars to spend on my

  477. closest friend, when I put out by.

  478. Yeah, oh well, I think I love to give gifts so much Ricky.

  479. It's hard for me to narrow it down because there's a couple

  480. faces that pop in my head, right?

  481. And I think That they would like different things.

  482. I think that a trip probably would be the thing and whether

  483. they take me along was up to them, but I would, I would like

  484. to plan a trip, particularly those that are really close to

  485. me all love baseball, and I actually just had this

  486. conversation with Aaron Jason's brother, the other night, and

  487. I've had this dream for years of a Father's Day, present, being a

  488. trick, a trip, Omaha to watch The College World Series and I

  489. just think that would be incredible.

  490. So it's almost like I would, I would get them the gift that I

  491. wanted. Now thankfully they die

  492. understand. But yeah I think a trip is a

  493. good one because I really it kind of goes back to this idea

  494. of gifts or wonderful but they don't typically lasts and so I

  495. really would rather create a memory, right?

  496. So I think a trip would be the thing that I do.

  497. That's awesome. I've been Inking.

  498. I think we talked about it. Having a guy's trip on a train.

  499. Yeah. So in hitting all the MLB parks

  500. that are along the realize, that would be awesome.

  501. I've never, I've never ridden on a train, this is so if I

  502. recommend it 100%, I did a trip a couple years ago where I love

  503. from San Antonio and went to Chicago and it was a 32-hour

  504. train trip, but you just sit there and you just like watch

  505. the scenery go by you make some amazing friendships that I still

  506. have today. Typically older generation of

  507. people but the stories that they tell you about their lives.

  508. You know, I met a lady who lived through the Great Depression and

  509. the stuff that her family had to go through.

  510. I met another gentleman who at the time, I think he served WWII

  511. and Korea and you know the stories that he was saying and

  512. these are just people that you meet during dinner time because

  513. it's communal dinner. Yeah.

  514. So you have to sit with strangers and as an introvert.

  515. It's really hard for me to do that.

  516. But you know, you get these people that These Amazing

  517. Stories. And if I were to put myself, you

  518. know, taking myself out of that and stretched myself.

  519. I would have heard these stories.

  520. Yeah. And I wouldn't have had these

  521. amazing friendships of these amazing people that you just

  522. meet in passing fun. That's so fun.

  523. I mean, maybe I don't know how it goes.

  524. Maybe you could take a train to Omaha.

  525. We could combine the trips really good.

  526. Have to figure out to figure it out, but yeah, I'm coming on

  527. that trip. Just FYI?

  528. Yes, you're invited, you're there.

  529. Nick, what do you consider yourself an expert at?

  530. Oh my gosh. Ricky um had a changeup the

  531. questions because you've been in all depart cast, you've heard

  532. all my questions. So I had to pull out the big

  533. guns today and I came like locked and loaded like I knew

  534. the questions that were coming so I already knew my answer is

  535. no now you're just throwing it up there.

  536. What's your favorite meal to cook?

  537. Yeah. Gosh.

  538. What am I an expert at? I guess because of my Education

  539. and Training. I am an expert at teaching.

  540. Yeah I was at in Education for 15 years, you know, I had to be

  541. an expert in in Youth and in teaching and classroom

  542. management and Ryan curriculum and all of those things.

  543. So I guess. Yeah, I guess I Would by default

  544. be an expert at teaching while you're in the role, you're in

  545. taking care of all of us and making sure we're all doing the

  546. right thing. Do you have any specific piece

  547. of art that you admire? I am in art fan.

  548. I love art museums and and going I probably the The piece of art

  549. in my home, that I treasure the most is actually from our

  550. daughter. Ella.

  551. Yeah, she is an amazing. She loves sketch art and she's

  552. an amazing sketch artist, and she will sometimes copy art that

  553. we have in the home and do it herself or she will watch

  554. tutorials. And then all the sudden, you

  555. have this beautiful art that she's created.

  556. And so, there's, there's little pieces of her art, kind of hung

  557. all throughout our house and I absolutely, Ali treasure.

  558. That's awesome. Nick was there ever a time that

  559. you begged your parents for something and they would say no,

  560. no, no. Then finally gave in this is

  561. more for me. What story?

  562. I wonder I mean and if they're listening to this, yeah, I think

  563. that, you know, when we were, when I was really young, we were

  564. super young family and dad was going to school and working a

  565. couple of jobs. We didn't have a lot of money

  566. and so I'm sure that as a kid, I often begged for things that we

  567. couldn't afford to have. Um, as I got older, I would say

  568. I can't think of anything off the top of my head.

  569. I would say it was probably something to do with sports with

  570. days. Fall in particular, is probably

  571. a good thing, new glove or bad or, you know, cleats that I

  572. wanted or something like that. I'm sure that there was a moment

  573. where I were them down, until I got what I wanted.

  574. So I have a story about this and this is why I ask this question

  575. as a kid, I think it was eight seven or eight.

  576. I asked my dad for a cow because I wanted a cow You know, I don't

  577. know why. I just wanted to cow.

  578. Okay, just hanging out in the living room where I guess

  579. because we lived in the city so it was not like we had to

  580. property for the cow but I just was infatuated with cows.

  581. I still kind of am infatuated with with Boba and I don't know

  582. why. I think they're cute.

  583. Yeah, learning stuff about me now.

  584. So fast forward. Eight years.

  585. I'm 16. I'm in high school that drive

  586. home in mind. You, we live in the city and I

  587. hear this moving and I'm like, what is this mooing?

  588. And I'm like, searching the house.

  589. See if there's like a TV that's on or what not?

  590. And probably go outside and in our dog run.

  591. Is this little calf? No way and he's mooing and I was

  592. like, okay. So I'm super confused because

  593. I'm like, how did this cow get into her yard and whatnot?

  594. So I call my mom like Mom, there's a cow and she goes, call

  595. your dad. I'm like, okay, so I called my

  596. father and I'm like, there's a cow in the backyard.

  597. He goes. Yeah, that's your cow.

  598. It's like I don't want to cow, he goes.

  599. No, you asked for a cow? Am I?

  600. I was 8, you know, I'm 16. What am I supposed to do with

  601. the cow? Now he goes, I don't know.

  602. That's not my problem. Like, he took some time to save

  603. the money to buy a cow, man. You all my dad was, yes, my dish

  604. was an ingenious man, he was a mechanic and sometimes customers

  605. couldn't pay for their work. So he would trade stuff.

  606. Yeah, he would barter. And one of his clients, had a

  607. cattle farm Ranch that he took care of and whatnot and one of

  608. the one of the cows had a Calf and the calf.

  609. Yeah, and he traded work for a cow at, huh.

  610. So now I'm stuck with this cow, and he's like, no now, it's your

  611. cow. So I'm going to join it.

  612. Hey, you do the whole thing. Just leave it in your backyard.

  613. Yeah, we took it to the ranch that it came from.

  614. Would have been awesome if you just randomly had this calendar.

  615. We ignored of. But we had a neighbor that was

  616. just not having it because this cow was just moving.

  617. I'm sure it was loud. It was super loud.

  618. It was super loud supplies. My story.

  619. I had A cow when I was asked, I thought you were going to tell

  620. me you asked for a cow and he gave you a steak or something.

  621. Oh no, we had to take after. Yeah, that was the most, that

  622. was the other part. Awesome.

  623. We showed the cow and, you know, got sold and whatnot.

  624. And then a couple weeks later we had steak and I'm eating the

  625. steak and it's the most delicious steak I've ever had in

  626. my life and lo and behold it was my cow.

  627. That's not the best part of that.

  628. So no, no, Nick is here your wedding day and Hire any Wedding

  629. Singer in the world. Who would you have hired?

  630. Wow, there's so many I can't even and I'm going to change

  631. kind of the question living or dead.

  632. Oh, gosh! You just made it even harder.

  633. I know. That's not fair.

  634. Yeah, I'm trying to I'm an over-thinker and so I'm trying

  635. not to completely overthink this.

  636. So, for some reason, immediately, when you ask that

  637. question, John Legend came. Into my mind.

  638. Yeah, so we'll just go with that.

  639. So I don't overthink it too much.

  640. All right, John Legend on his piano.

  641. Yeah. What is one word?

  642. That you always struggle to spell correctly?

  643. Well, I told you I'm an English teacher.

  644. Right. Mmm, I ask this question.

  645. Oh gosh. Um, I know I know that there are

  646. a couple. I just can't think right now,

  647. what they are. I think the i before e rule,

  648. sometimes gets me. Yeah.

  649. And so words like, Receive and things like that.

  650. I think I have to be very careful and pay attention,

  651. right? I'm trying to spell them out.

  652. Mine is below and Bellow. Okay?

  653. Because it's just either one L or two L's.

  654. Yeah, and I always spell it correct incorrectly and they're,

  655. like, hello, what I do and a teacher and I think it was like,

  656. third grade and it was for the words, desert and desert.

  657. And she told us that dessert always has two s's because it

  658. has sweet stuff. So that's how I Ember that

  659. desert is two s's and desert is one.

  660. I remember s serving. Oh yeah same idea.

  661. Yeah that's how I remember how to spell.

  662. Yeah, so you were educator. I was what was the most

  663. memorable class you've ever taken?

  664. I've ever taken, um, I took a couple of my English classes,

  665. probably when I went to Cleveland State for one year and

  666. I got to take a lot of my concentration, which It was

  667. literature and I took a class called black masterpieces and it

  668. was a focus on African-American literature and that class was,

  669. was really, really good. It was probably, yeah.

  670. In a good way. That was my most memorable class

  671. and then I had another class that was in a bad way.

  672. The most memorable class and it was Greek and Roman mythology.

  673. And the teacher was the professor actually Lee he stood

  674. at the board with his back to us and just wrote notes while he

  675. talked the entire time and then what erase and just keep

  676. writing. Like it was.

  677. I don't know that I ever saw his face.

  678. Like I don't know what it looks like.

  679. Yeah. All right.

  680. Nick. One more question and then we're

  681. going to Rapid Fire. OK, you ready?

  682. I am. What three things would you

  683. leave in a time capsule for people to open in 50 years for

  684. like in general to know the time or about me both?

  685. Okay, that's not helpful. For me, I would leave a Bible.

  686. I would leave a baseball glove and I would leave a picture of

  687. my family. Nice.

  688. That would be. If I were, it was your time

  689. capsule? Yeah.

  690. Okay, ready for Rapid Fire? I probably not, but I'm here and

  691. I don't have anywhere else to go.

  692. So what would you do with an extra hour in a day?

  693. I would spend it with my family preferably on Water Somewhere.

  694. What is something that you love that?

  695. It's vintage who I love old cars.

  696. I really Truly I love old cars, nice.

  697. If you could be a personal assistant to anyone, who would

  698. it be? Am I supposed to say Jason since

  699. he might listen to this? Okay, if you said Jason, I'm

  700. going to smack you. I oh gosh, that is.

  701. Wow, personal assistant. I think it'd be it would man.

  702. It would probably be awful, but I think it would be so

  703. interesting to be an assistant to Elon Musk because he's so

  704. eccentric. You think it'd be so

  705. interesting. It would be if you had to lose

  706. one of your Senses, which one would you give up?

  707. Um, not cite. Not hearing maybe smell.

  708. Okay, as long as I could taste, I would hate to be able to smell

  709. and not taste, but I think I could not smell and taste I

  710. would be okay, okay. Name something on your to-do

  711. list that never gets done. Diet is that.

  712. Yeah, yeah. And lastly, who's someone you'd

  713. like to trade places with for a day and be really corny to say,

  714. no one that's a valid answer is Well, for a day I think it would

  715. be it would be and I don't have a specific person in mind.

  716. I think that it would be really cool to trade places with a

  717. professional baseball player. Just for one day, just for one

  718. day just to play, just to play it in the show and the show just

  719. to be in the show and be so good.

  720. Thank you so much again for being on the podcast.

  721. It's always a pleasure to kind of pick your brain and to see

  722. what's behind the curtain. It's just to say and just thank

  723. you again for your amazing leadership.

  724. Oh, He's in your friendship and just always being that steady

  725. force that we can all look up to and just know that it's going to

  726. be okay. Yeah so you can find all of

  727. Nick's information on our website at www.searchtv.org send

  728. him an email, sent him a text and just you know if you haven't
