  1. Welcome To The River. City Church podcast and a

  2. message by our lead. Pastor Jason Powers our prayer

  3. is that this message would Inspire and encourage you, build

  4. your faith. And point you to the

  5. life-changing love of Jesus, may you enjoy the goodness of God as

  6. you follow him today, Hi everybody.

  7. I am glad that you are. Here.

  8. It is. Good to be back.

  9. I'm really grateful for Nick, Fox, who spoke last week, you'll

  10. be hearing again from him again, during this series.

  11. But I'm here today to talk about peace and I just want to check

  12. in. How are you doing?

  13. Peace is one of those things, right?

  14. It's kind of nebulous, it's a little bit, kind of

  15. touchy-feely, right? It's why.

  16. I like it's one of those things when we pray for it.

  17. Lord, give me peace. And I never Really know, like I

  18. look back and go. Well, I'm less angry than I was

  19. then, so maybe it's going and maybe it's working, but it's

  20. going to hold to the same kind of idea that Nick introduced us

  21. last week when he was talking about Hope and it made this

  22. wonderful point and it kind of holds her.

  23. He said last week, that hope in Jesus has to replace hoping

  24. everything else. And it's such an important idea

  25. and that's wrapped up in a theological, okay?

  26. So sometimes if there's a word that's that's heavy and it's

  27. kind of hard and it's been cast, a great way to kind of Take it

  28. in to look at it again and just make sure that we're talking

  29. about the same thing that the definition, the same.

  30. There's a word that in kind of religious circles.

  31. I think it gets thrown around and it gets heavy.

  32. And when Nick says, you know, that hope in Jesus has replacing

  33. everything else. What he's talking about is

  34. there's this theological word that the word is repent.

  35. And that's what he's talking about when we say that open,

  36. Jesus has to replace of everything else.

  37. What he's talking about is this repentance of hope we repent of

  38. Of our track of hope to find. Another hope the idea is imagine

  39. if you will that you have a job and I hope for most of you that

  40. you don't have to just imagine that.

  41. I hope you actually can have that, right?

  42. But want you to imagine that you have a job and your job is fine,

  43. it's okay, it's good, right? It's like any other job but then

  44. one day somebody comes to you and says, I want to give you a

  45. job and I want you to write what what it what you are good at,

  46. what you are, excellent at, what you put brings you life and joy

  47. and Wholeness, I want you to do just that that is your job that

  48. you can write your job description around those things.

  49. And not only that but we will take that and this job that you

  50. love that you were created for that.

  51. You want to do we will pay you 50 times.

  52. What you are paying well with your boss right now is paying

  53. you. The only thing about it is for

  54. you to have this job that is just what you want to do and the

  55. pays more than going to. The only thing is for you to

  56. take that job, you have to leave your your old job.

  57. That's not a decision. Is it right?

  58. You mean, like, it's going to be better in every conceivable way?

  59. Yes, okay, I will take that. That's the picture of repentance

  60. when it talks about. Hope the invitation is that we

  61. step back and look at all the things that bring us hope and

  62. like, and listen, this can be heavy, right?

  63. Like when we talk about Hope and peace and we talked about, you

  64. know, replacing and repentance and on this, it can kind of

  65. start to fear at. Like I think we sometimes are

  66. hard wired for guilty. Anyway sometimes, right.

  67. And so, We can step back and we can just go yeah man.

  68. I like I do I get you know what are the fear?

  69. You have a lot of fear, have you had an anxiety attack on the

  70. last month? No, condemnation.

  71. I really don't want to say in the question.

  72. Behind all of this is is that indicative is your level of hope

  73. your level of peace is that indicative of something that

  74. only the omnipotent creator of all things could give you Do you

  75. hear what I'm saying? Is your piece is it peace that

  76. has kind of the fragrance and the aroma of Eternity about it?

  77. Or is it the kind of the peaceful that most people have

  78. in some degree or another to a greater degree or to a lesser

  79. degree? And what I would want to say is

  80. if our peace and our joy is not consummate, that there's more

  81. and so here's a little insight into kind of my job.

  82. You didn't ask for it but here it is.

  83. Anyway, sometimes I look at my job, I feel like my job is to

  84. teach, right? Just go.

  85. Hey this is how that is what that means in this.

  86. What that looks like in this is how all of this goes together.

  87. Like and I like that and that's fine.

  88. Sometimes I feel like my job is just to show to hold up a mirror

  89. and to hold up an example and that's kind of what I want to do

  90. today. So just like if you'll look like

  91. this is my Bible, how I prepare like you can see these little

  92. pink tabs, maybe you can't see him.

  93. There's a lot of In full disclosure, if you have your

  94. Bible like your paper Bible. That's awesome.

  95. If you have your electronic Bible, you can go ahead and get

  96. it out because I just want to let you know.

  97. I'm going to wear you out with scripture today for a very

  98. important reason we talk about peace today.

  99. Don't you think we could use some?

  100. Generally in the world. All right.

  101. And so what I want to show today is that this piece that I think

  102. we really hunger for and really search for this piece that that

  103. our hearts cry out for that. We know.

  104. Even if we can't put a finger on it, exactly.

  105. We know when it's not, we know what anxiety.

  106. We know what anxiousness, we know, what lack, we know what

  107. loss feels like. My hope is what I want you to

  108. see today, is that piece that you long for and search for Or

  109. so hard for your whole life is really God's desire for you

  110. since the beginning. God's desire, isn't that we

  111. would toil and futility, and obscurity.

  112. And then someday when we die, No.

  113. Oh, that's what that is. Jesus came.

  114. And he said the Kingdom of Heaven, the government of

  115. Eternity is present here and now and so if there's any peace and

  116. that there should be peace Here. And Now, how does that sound to

  117. you? And so I want to say especially

  118. if you're here and piece is a little bit.

  119. Diminished piece is a little bit lacking for whatever reason,

  120. your marriage isn't going, right?

  121. Your relationships at work aren't going well, maybe the Oz,

  122. have you freaking out, maybe, you're you're bothered and

  123. you're, you're not at peace because what's going on in the

  124. world or in the country or in your neighborhood or in your

  125. school or in your kid's life, and whatever it is just

  126. acknowledging. I don't have the piece that I

  127. think God could give me is a great start and it's a great

  128. beginning. So what could we see in

  129. scripture, we start in the beginning in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  130. and I do want to say in the New Year we're going to start off

  131. the new year with looking at like a 45 week.

  132. Look at Genesis. Two and three.

  133. We're going to call this series blueprint because in Genesis 12

  134. and 3 really is god's picture and God's idea of what creation

  135. and humanity and life in the kingdom is supposed to look

  136. like. But we're going to just

  137. specifically look at chapter 3 today because we find in Genesis

  138. 1. God, creating everything and

  139. calling it, good. Whatever it is that you see in

  140. the world and created God looked at it.

  141. God said, yep, I did that. And that's good.

  142. Can you imagine how happy how peaceful an entirely and

  143. thoroughly good world? Would be if everything played

  144. its purpose. Fulfill this function,

  145. everything did its role perfectly and completely.

  146. Can you imagine how it piece that would be?

  147. So in Genesis 1 we had this big kind of 10,000-foot view and we

  148. get in Genesis chapter 2 and it kind of focuses in on one day of

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  149. creation or God created Mankind in the garden chose about

  150. purpose. And it shows about his vocation

  151. about his work and we find that even work can be the presence of

  152. God. But when we get to Genesis 3, we

  153. really find where the whole thing starts to Wrong.

  154. It says, in Genesis chapter 3 starting in verse 6.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  155. So when the woman saw that the tree, there was really one tree

  156. and even that God said, Hey, in order for this thing to work, we

  157. have to acknowledge and keep the reality that I'm God.

  158. God said, I am God and you, Adam and Eve mankind.

  159. You're not God, you're my agents.

  160. You're supposed to be in creation, reflecting God's

  161. goodness in the world, but I'm God.

  162. And in order for that to be realized, we have to

  163. acknowledge, I get to say, God says, I get final say what to do

  164. and what he says is just don't eat that tree.

  165. And it's not, is it an apple tree or persimmon tree?

  166. Who cares? The idea is God said, don't.

  167. And what we said, is look when the woman saw that what the tree

  168. was good for food, that's important, isn't it?

  169. Are we supposed to eat most have food, right?

  170. One thing that causes stress and anxiety and unpeaceful in our

  171. world, in our life, is a lack of resource when we feel like we

  172. don't have enough when we feel like we're without and what

  173. happened is Eve. So now you Got to notice is he

  174. was in the Garden of Eden, where literally all the world is

  175. blooming at God's desire in his wishing.

  176. God made all the trees and she looks in at this one.

  177. Yeah but really I want that she saw that it was good for food

  178. and it was a delight to the eyes.

  179. It looked good. It was the perfect shiny red and

  180. that the tree and this is really the one right?

  181. The tree was to be desired to make one wise.

  182. You know, what's significant about the desire to be wise.

  183. If I'm wise and I'm the able to no good and evil just by eating

  184. a fruit. You know what, I don't need.

  185. A boss, a god, a Lord. And so at Eve's, I remember we

  186. just came out of a series on James, right?

  187. We saw about how our desires. Go will Eve saw and her desires

  188. are inflamed. I want what tastes good and I

  189. want what looks good. And I don't really want to have

  190. to be dependent on that. God guy all the time for what

  191. tastes good and what looks good. And so it says she took it, and

  192. she ate it and she gave some to her husband who was there with

  193. her and she, and he ate it and notice what happened.

  194. It says, the eyes of the both were Were open.

  195. I want to real quick. Just acknowledge, it doesn't say

  196. anything changed. The only thing in creation that

  197. changed was they saw. And they saw things as they are,

  198. they saw things that were real, right?

  199. Their eyes were opened and they knew that they were naked notice

  200. where they naked before they were. now they knew it and you

  201. know what they noticed they're not like God They really wanted

  202. to be like God and they wanted to have their desires met and

  203. they wanted to have all that and what they missed was and all of

  204. creation, all of their desires have been met, all their

  205. desires, everything that they wanted for food and for is all

  206. available is all readily right there.

  207. But what they wanted was not just to enjoy God's presence.

  208. They wanted to be God and so we find that in what happens is he

  209. sends them out? He says, well if you don't, you

  210. don't get the garden without God who made the garden.

  211. Grow God did who planted the garden?

  212. God did who planted Adam and Eve their God.

  213. Did they were there on God's plan and God's purpose for his

  214. purpose? And so when they threw that out,

  215. when they said, no, we don't want to be where God makes

  216. things grow, we want to be God. Well, that's a whole different

  217. world entirely and so they walk out of it.

  218. And for hundreds of years, things go from bad to worse.

  219. And so, one day out of nowhere, God shows up in a guy's

  220. backyard. And he says this, the Lord God

  221. said to Abram in Genesis 12, Go from your country and your kin

  222. did Kindred and your father's house to a land that I will show

  223. you. This is the Old Testament way of

  224. God saying follow me. Where am I going God?

  225. You're going with me. Well, where will we end up?

  226. You'll end up where I end up, well, what should I take?

  227. You should take me. So, what do I need to know?

  228. God, you need to go that I'm going and I want you with me.

  229. That's the invitation. That's it.

  230. That's how God calls a notice then.

  231. But what else he says, and if you do that verse 2 and I will

  232. make of you a great nation. Now, what does a nation mean?

  233. It means people. It means power.

  234. It means economy. It means military.

  235. It means borders. It means all of the stuff that

  236. goes in. And he says, Abram one guy.

  237. I will make you a nation and all of these things and I will bless

  238. you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

  239. And I will bless those who bless you and to him who dishonors,

  240. you, I will curse and in you all the families of the Earth shall

  241. be blessed. So, the pictures Abram, I will

  242. make you a giant cup. And I will fill you so much that

  243. you get that little surface tension bubble over the Top

  244. right? So you can look at it, he's

  245. gone. Yeah, that's as full as it can

  246. get and then God says and as soon as your full, what I'm

  247. going to do is I'm going to turn on the fire hose and I'm going

  248. to shut it. So the water shoots out all over

  249. the world and everybody gets some because of what I'm going

  250. to give to you. And so now that the contingency

  251. for blessing is, are the criteria for blessing is, how

  252. close are you to the one who's close to God?

  253. You see what God is saying is like I'm going to build and make

  254. a community and so now you go a couple more Chapters over to

  255. Genesis chapter 15. Because remember God has

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  256. promised errands that Abram follow me and I'm going to do

  257. something with you. So the question is like, what?

  258. S always going to make us a blessing.

  259. That sounds good, right? Don't you want to be blessed?

  260. Don't you want to be a blessing? So he goes on in verse 15 verse

  261. 1. After these things, the word of

  262. the Lord came to Abram again and a vision fear, not Abram, I am

  263. your shield and your reward shall be very great.

  264. So there's a couple things. What is it called when we are

  265. not afraid? We are what at peace.

  266. Don't Be Afraid Abram, why? Because God said, I am your

  267. shield. Now, what does a shield to do

  268. it? Protects us, right?

  269. So what did God say that God. Say Abram!

  270. You better. Go get tough.

  271. You say Abram, you need to have a good lawyer, you need to have

  272. a good attorney to make sure that you get what you want from

  273. the nation Nations around you. He say Abraham.

  274. Listen, you got to listen, you got to fight, you got a raise in

  275. our, you got to go, you got to go do all these things.

  276. What God Said to Abraham is I will take care of you.

  277. Now, what does Abram have to do? Follow.

  278. Did God say everything you got to do all this right since phone

  279. keeps going on, go down to verse 5 and he brings them outside and

  280. he says look towards heaven and Number the Stars.

  281. He literally is like okay Abram go ahead.

  282. I want you to just count all those stars all way.

  283. I remember this was like a long time ago there wasn't light

  284. pollution, he could see all of the stars guys.

  285. Like I'll wait. Captain, right?

  286. And if you can count them, if you can count the Stars to

  287. number them, then he said, so shall your off brings Offspring

  288. being and he believed the Lord and he counted it to him as

  289. righteousness. He believed in.

  290. And so what God told amer's Abram, I'm not just going to

  291. bless you. I'm gonna bless you so much that

  292. you can't even contain it. Like, the stars in the sky

  293. Abram, I'm going to take you and I'm going to make you so

  294. fruitful. And so abundant see, this is

  295. what God is up to. This is what God is about.

  296. When Jesus said in John, chapter 10 says the thief comes to steal

    John 10 chapter mention

  297. and destroy and kill you. He says, I've come to give you

  298. abundance, we need to think of the order of magnitude when God

  299. describes abundance, the order of magnitude that he's talking

  300. about is the stars and the sky. The sand, the grains of sand on

  301. the beach and he says Abram, I'm going to do that for you.

  302. And now we go down to verse 15. As for you, you shall go to your

  303. father's is a great way of saying you're going to die.

  304. Listen, and there's a great word right here and you shall go to

  305. your father's in. What?

  306. The word for peace, the Hebrew word for peace is you've heard

  307. it Shalom. And what shalom means is, it

  308. means peace. Yes, but it means peace from

  309. being completely full from being at rest from being complete, it

  310. is to say to have Shalom, has to say, I don't need anything.

  311. I have all the food, all the provision, all the protection,

  312. all the company, all that, everything that I want.

  313. I have, I need now. It doesn't mean that all the

  314. world. It doesn't mean it just says, I

  315. am at rest. It is to be at peace.

  316. It is to look around and just go, I have that.

  317. And what God says is you're going to follow me and I'm going

  318. to make you so complete. It's going to Define you and

  319. it's going to be the kind of thing that everybody who gets in

  320. the same room with you is going to see and notice and experience

  321. that fullness and then when you die because you're going to die.

  322. And on that day you will be so full and complete.

  323. You will go to your father's in peace and you shall be buried at

  324. a good ripe. Old age.

  325. See what God told, Abraham, what God did with Abraham is what we

  326. call a covenant of peace and Covenant, Covenant is an

  327. agreement. If I make a covenant with you,

  328. we don't I don't know that in kind of in the west we have

  329. anything anything equivalent maybe a banknote right where the

  330. bank says hey if you don't give our stuff back we're going to

  331. come get everything right and it's an agreement with terms

  332. that everybody has to agree on and everybody has to but what

  333. God did is made An agreement with Abram and his Abram, and

  334. his commitment. His promise was Abram, if you

  335. follow me, I will drench and shroud your life in the

  336. abundance of Peace. So, again, I ask you at

  337. Christmas time, how's it going? How are you doing?

  338. This is the time where all of those things that destroy our

  339. peace, come up, our relationships, our fears, our

  340. failures, our insignificance, our questions.

  341. We want to see just at the beginning, is that when God gets

  342. involved, when God looks at our lives, when God looks at our are

  343. lost in this his desire he engages us with a call number

  344. one to follow him and number two to find in him.

  345. Peace. So now we fast forward thousands

  346. of years and there's a prophet called Ezekiel, right?

  347. And the when profits show up, what that means is that the

  348. people have gone away and ideas the people of Israel.

  349. Now, since he's talked to Abraham, they've gone, they went

  350. in. Avery and Egypt.

  351. God, delivered them from slavery.

  352. He taught him how to be the nation of Israel.

  353. They went and they had their people under King David.

  354. They conquered everybody. Lots of Conquest, lots of

  355. military and God. And David said, I want to build

  356. a temple for you and God said, you can't build a temple for my

  357. people because you're a man of Bloodshed right?

  358. So, real quick, right, when we look at the Old Testament go,

  359. man. God sure is angry, and God, sure

  360. is mean and God sure does like killing people, right?

  361. It's important to know. First of all that the god that

  362. we find in the scripture is a God who goes to Abraham and says

  363. I want to make with you. Even in a piece I want to bless

  364. you and I want to be a bun. You so what's going on in the

  365. rest of the Old Testament with Joshua?

  366. I think God a little bit knows what's in our heart, right?

  367. And he knows what we're like and so he goes, okay, let's see how

  368. that works. Go ahead, go get them.

  369. So the question is, how did it work?

  370. Israel had a nation, didn't they?

  371. They had borders. They had an economy.

  372. Do they ever have peace? No.

  373. Solomon. After King date, right?

  374. And not only that, but David, the king the warrior of metal

  375. budget. God didn't let him build the

  376. temple. Listen if that's what we're

  377. hooking our saddle to that's fine.

  378. Just no just no Solomon. The probably the wealthiest

  379. person who's ever lived the wisest person who's ever lived

  380. and it's on his Reign, his watch that the entire nation of Israel

  381. goes into go starts to go down the drain.

  382. They end up with in just a few hundred years they're all split.

  383. The kingdom is divided, they're all in Exile and all that and

  384. what happens then the prophets come and they start talking

  385. about God. Has God made a promise This

  386. Promise real, right? Like if it's promise is just

  387. for, like, 20 minutes, what, what good is that, but these

  388. profits are coming, and they started talking about his

  389. promise to the people. And he says, this in Ezekiel

  390. chapter, 34 starting in verse 22.

  391. God says, to the people of Israel, and real quick, you're

  392. like, well, we're not the people of Israel in the Old Testament.

  393. The people of Israel are God's people.

  394. The people that God chose that he's saving that he has made a

  395. covenant with who are the people in the New Testament that are

  396. God's people that are under his Covenant.

  397. Remember what Johnny said? Jesus said this is the new

  398. Covenant, in my blood, we are God's people as Believers as

  399. follows him, right? So what does he say?

  400. He says, I will rescue my flock. God begins to build a metaphor

  401. for his people, A Flock. He's talking about sheep, you

  402. know, the great thing about sheep when he makes this

  403. metaphor, they are dumb. I don't I don't particularly

  404. like that analogy but I am that analogy, right?

  405. Like they don't feed themselves. They'll walk.

  406. You seen the videos of that sheep right in the crack and

  407. they pull him out and he jumps down and falls in the crack

  408. again. That's cheap.

  409. That's us. That's right.

  410. This is why God says, I will rescue my flock because we're

  411. always jumping and crevices, right?

  412. I will rescue my flock. They shall no longer be a prey.

  413. And I will judge between sheep and sheep and I will set up over

  414. them one. Shepherd.

  415. Now here's the metaphor, right? So the idea of Shepherd is God's

  416. chosen person to take care of the sheep.

  417. And so, what a Shepherd does is pulls sheep out of the crevices.

  418. Make sure they have food, make sure they don't walk off the

  419. cliff. Make sure that they have that

  420. they're not sick, make sure that they have water, right?

  421. I will set over them a Shepherd, my servant David now, listen,

  422. David was already dead. This isn't like zombies, right?

  423. He's not raising that David upright, like this.

  424. What he's saying is from that, wine it.

  425. When you talk about David, they're talking about royalty,

  426. they're talking about God's people about their identity.

  427. He said, I will raise up my servant David and he shall feed

  428. them. He shall feed them and be their

  429. Shepherd. And I the Lord will be their

  430. God. And my servant, David shall be

  431. Prince. Okay.

  432. When he's talking about that word Prince royalty, what he's

  433. talking about is Messiah and Messiah what he's talking about.

  434. With Abraham, right? Erin, I'm gonna raise my sight.

  435. The word Messiah, it's a Hebrew word, and it means anointed.

  436. It means Royal it's the Greek word Christ.

  437. Okay, so he says, I will send a prince my royalty and he will do

  438. that and I Am Lord but he's the one that's going to come to

  439. trees. And now what is this Prince

  440. going to be? Like I will make with them.

  441. A covenant of Peace. Remember what I did with

  442. Abraham, on the individual level, I'm now going to do with

  443. everybody. So how does God's water?

  444. God's his covenants like peace. When God makes a deal.

  445. It's a deal of Peace. God makes peace, do people make

  446. peace people, make war people, make the cross people.

  447. Make armies people make war, god makes peace and I will banish

  448. the wild beasts from the land so that they may dwell securely in

  449. the wilderness and the and sleep in the woods and I will make

  450. them and the place is all around my Hill.

  451. A blessing, that's what he said. Listen, God hasn't changed

  452. Genesis 3, Genesis 12, Genesis 15, Ezekiel 34.

  453. God's heart hasn't changed his desire for his people.

  454. His peace. So when we talk about

  455. repentance, when we talk about turning away, when we talk

  456. about, not our way, but God's way, when we talk about this,

  457. radical reversal of who we are, when Jesus stood on the beach

  458. and Matthew chapter 4 and said, repent, because the Kingdom of

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  459. Heaven is here, this is what he's talking about.

  460. God has made a covenant with his people of Peace.

  461. Listen, are you listening God's desire for you?

  462. Not someday when you Diane are sitting on a cloud, God's desire

  463. for you today is that you would know, deeply and thoroughly and

  464. exhaustively his piece. How's that sound?

  465. How does that feel? God makes a covenant with his

  466. people of peace. And now we go back a couple

  467. books of the book of Isaiah and we already read this today.

  468. Isaiah chapter 9, again, a prophet hearing from God talking

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  469. to the people of Israel. He says this he describes now

  470. we're talking about Messiah, right?

  471. That Prince of Peace. The one who comes for unto us, a

  472. child is born. Here's the thing, right?

  473. Like, like babies scream, and they yell and do all that right.

  474. But is there even in all of the screaming, right?

  475. We just love them. Just love them, right?

  476. But the question is is there anything in the world less

  477. strong and scary than a baby? No, when I see a baby, I turn

  478. into an idiot, right? I want to pick up your child and

  479. I want to nibble on it. I want to hold it and squeeze

  480. and all this, right? Like this is the thing because

  481. this is what babies do. And what God said is there's

  482. going to be a child and listen to what the child says.

  483. Are you listening? Listen and the government will

  484. be on his shoulders. We know that that brings up

  485. images in your mind. What does that mean?

  486. The government will be on his shoulders.

  487. And his name will be called wonderful counselor, Mighty God

  488. Everlasting father. And here it is, Prince of Peace.

  489. The ruler, who rules and Reigns over piece.

  490. And of the increased. Now here's here's this metaphor

  491. right of the increase of his government.

  492. So I wanted to ask you, right? If we look at history, if we

  493. look at The Human Experience, right?

  494. If what we do, how do government's increase taxes?

  495. Bureaucracy War battles, right? But what we're told is there's

  496. this baby and it describes his government, right of his

  497. government, it will increase with the increase of his

  498. government. There will be no end.

  499. That's what the Roman Empire was trying to do, right?

  500. The increase of the government spread that Went all the way

  501. around the whole world. We call it imperialism.

  502. Right. The Roman Empire spreading

  503. spring break, but we're told is there's a baby and his

  504. government, this Prince of Peace that is going to expand and

  505. expand expensive. There will be no end upon the

  506. throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and to

  507. it. Uphold it with Justice and

  508. righteousness from this time forth and forevermore and the

  509. Zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this Isaiah saying, a baby's

  510. going to come and establish a government and it's going to

  511. keep growing and it's going to keep doing that.

  512. And some of us in here and go, Yeah, but we keep electing

  513. Democrats. So how's it going to happen?

  514. That's not what he's talking about.

  515. Not at all, not even a little bit.

  516. Because that's the question, right?

  517. Like, how do you grow government?

  518. How do you expand government? And the question I would have is

  519. again. How's it going for us?

  520. Has our government brought us. Peace.

  521. And here's the deal, right? Whatever side you're on.

  522. Good news, is, we've had both sides in office and the last

  523. eight years, right? So, if any side in the political

  524. game could bring peace, we would surely have it now.

  525. How's it going for you? Are you at greater peace?

  526. This year than you were last year than the year before and

  527. less? And I know it's not all about

  528. politics. I know it's about relationships,

  529. it's about money, it's about sex, it's about fear.

  530. It's about identity followers. Hints about all kinds of things

  531. that cause turmoil, that stir us up to get us agitated to get us.

  532. Frustrated and all of that we're going to find in just a second

  533. where that comes from. But the idea that I just want to

  534. reiterate and rehome has that gods desire for you is peace.

  535. God's desire for you is that you would live in this world.

  536. Peace and listen to how Micah another Prophet said, Micah 5:2.

    Micah 5:2

  537. But you o Bethlehem Bethlehem sound familiar, right?

  538. Sounds relevant to the Christmas story.

  539. You o, Bethlehem ephrathah, who are too little to be among the

  540. clans of Judah. From you shall come forth, one,

  541. who has to be a ruler in Israel. You could call him a prince,

  542. even a prince of peace. A ruler in Israel whose coming

  543. forth It's told from ancient days.

  544. You know, when it was told it was told in Genesis 3 and I was

  545. told in Exodus and Leviticus and numbers and Deuteronomy and

  546. Joshua and judges and all the way through because this has

  547. been God's plan his desire the whole time.

  548. So now we go down to verse 4 and he this ruler that's coming.

  549. He shall stand and Shepherd, right?

  550. Does that sound familiar? God's person?

  551. God's leader. His Messiah.

  552. He shall Shepherd. His flock in the strength of the

  553. Lord. See, the problem is, the reason

  554. we don't have pieces because we try to Shepherd our lives in the

  555. strength of me. And so I run around and I got to

  556. figure out how many did the shopping done and how am I going

  557. to make the money going on? My gonna raise the kids and do

  558. all this. Listen I'm not going to be able

  559. to do any of those things. Well and when he says is you

  560. want to know how a child, his government grows the child grows

  561. because the child operates in a strength that isn't his I think

  562. maybe our lack of peace is because we're not so comfortable

  563. with that and that's understandable.

  564. I understand that, right? You start talking about a power

  565. that that's not it's not yours. A power that we don't understand

  566. and it can be big and it can be scary but it goes on.

  567. Verse 50 rats and they shall dwell insecure and they shall

  568. dwell secure for now. He shall be great.

  569. To the ends of the Earth and listen in verse 5, and he shall

  570. be their peace. This Messiah.

  571. It says, it doesn't say that that he will come in and bring a

  572. feeding program that leads to peace.

  573. Doesn't say that he'll come in and rule in peace.

  574. It says that he will be there peace.

  575. There's this crazy verse in first John four that says that

  576. God is love and that's so comforting right?

  577. Because when I hear that God is love, it doesn't mean that God

  578. loves me as if someday he could stop loving me.

  579. What it means is that his very nature is to love to be in the

  580. presence of God is to be loved. Loved to be in the presence of

  581. Jesus. Are you listening to be in the

  582. presence of Jesus, is to be at peace?

  583. God told, Micah, and he told Ezekiel, and he told Isaiah.

  584. And he told Eve, and he told all of them that his plan, his

  585. coming was to bring peace. So we go back now, to Luke, Luke

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  586. Chapter 2, right? You've heard the story.

  587. This is what Linus reads every Sunday or every Christmas.

  588. Right? Luke Chapter 2 starting in verse

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  589. 10. Right?

  590. The angel shows up their Shepherds shepherds are just

  591. blue collar guys. They're Outsiders, they weren't

  592. invited to the party because they dirty and they smell right

  593. but you know where the shepherds are there with the sheep that

  594. seems to be a metaphor that seems to be significant to the

  595. Lord. Right?

  596. So the Angels show up to the Shepherds and an angel said to

  597. them fear not what's another way you could, what's another word

  598. that you could use for fear, not peace.

  599. Shalom at rest. He says fear not For behold I

  600. bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people

  601. for unto. You is Born This Day in the city

  602. of David. You know what the city of David

  603. is Bethlehem Remember what Micah said in Bethlehem a ruler was

  604. coming. And so now the Angels go to

  605. these Shepherds and they say hey and that now listen, these

  606. Shepherds, they were not theologically trained.

  607. They did not know. All the Messianic prophecies,

  608. they didn't know they're dealing with sheep poop all the time,

  609. right? So an angel has to come in and

  610. this is good news. He comes, he goes hey, in

  611. Bethlehem and guess I gotta, I know you don't know.

  612. This means that listen today in Bethlehem, there's a savior, who

  613. is Christ the lord? And this will be a sign for you.

  614. You'll find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloth and lying in.

  615. A manger. And suddenly, it says, there was

  616. with the angel, a multitude of the Heavenly Host, praising God,

  617. and saying, and what did they say?

  618. We got the biggest guns. We are strong, we can control

  619. and room and Haley. Did he come and say hey, we're

  620. about to get Rome out. He said, hey, I'm going to lower

  621. interest rates. Know what he says is glory to

  622. God in the highest and on Earth. Peace.

  623. Peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  624. Jesus is the Fulfillment of God's promise of Peace when he

  625. promised peace in Genesis and in Ezekiel and Isaiah and in Micah

  626. and all the way through, when he promised peace, he was talking

  627. about Jesus. Remember what Simian said last

  628. time? Luke chapter 22 verse 29 now.

    Luke 22:29

  629. Lord, you are letting your servant depart in peace.

  630. According to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation.

  631. They've seen it. Salvation.

  632. What did it? Simeon.

  633. See a baby. He saw Jesus and he knew.

  634. That's it. That's my piece.

  635. So now let's be real honest, let's acknowledge this, right?

  636. Jesus is our peace. Can we be honest person?

  637. As I would have, there doesn't seem like he's doing a very good

  638. job. Does it?

  639. Billion people in the world, probably, right now.

  640. Professing Christians. Believers.

  641. How you doing? What a piece for piece today

  642. than there was for peace and there was a year ago, two years

  643. ago, five years ago, 100 years ago win When was yeah, we have

  644. probably more piece less war now than you know.

  645. Genghis Khan. I don't, I don't know.

  646. Just doesn't seem like he's doing a very good job.

  647. I would say, even for myself, I don't often live in that sense

  648. of just like this and I'm not what you see on the inside a lot

  649. is happening. On the, on the outside is a lot

  650. happened on the inside to write. This is 1.

  651. This is hard for me. But what I know is I can't draw

  652. close to the story of scripture, the story of Christmas and

  653. Escape From This Promise of Peace escape from this promise

  654. that God is working and that God is moving.

  655. And so what do we do with that? Is it okay to tell Jesus Jesus,

  656. you're not doing a very good job at this.

  657. I think like you should listen to me.

  658. I think we should do that. We'll listen, I would say it's

  659. hey, you got to say that you got to tell him, right?

  660. The worst thing you can do is just go.

  661. Yes this is the peace. That Jesus came to establish.

  662. Let me just tell you if I'm outside the church.

  663. I look at us. I hear us talking about peace.

  664. I look at this and we don't have an answer.

  665. I would tell you the same thing, it's not working.

  666. You need to tell your God to fix it because this is terrible.

  667. What I would say is that God knows, and what I would say is

  668. that Jesus knew to, are you listening, Luke chapter 19, Luke

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  669. chapter, 19 is the story, The triumphal entry, which we

  670. usually tell at Easter time, right?

  671. When we hear that Jesus was the Messiah will Triumph the

  672. triumphant entry is when all the people of Israel acknowledge it

  673. and Jesus rides in on a donkey and all the all the prophecies

  674. are fulfilled and what they say is these great Messianic Hosanna

  675. blessed. Is he who comes in the name of

  676. the Lord. There they're celebrating.

  677. Jesus as Messiah. And what they thought that meant

  678. was that Jesus was going to come in and Rome was going to go out.

  679. And so they were so happy because what they expect was

  680. there already to take up arms. They're ready to throw off for.

  681. Why are you listening? Because peace, they wanted peace

  682. and they thought Rome was the problem.

  683. So the question for you is what's the problem in your life.

  684. Is it a person? Is it a system?

  685. Is it a structure? What causes you to not have

  686. peace because we find Jesus still a little bit bowlegged

  687. from the donkey, right? Like, you can hear the shouts of

  688. the crowd behind him. Hosanna blessed.

  689. Is he who comes in the name of the Lord?

  690. And Jesus Walks over to the edge of the mountain and he looks

  691. over Jerusalem. This ancient city where the

  692. temple was? It's the equivalent of walking

  693. and standing on a hill, overlooking Washington DC and we

  694. see the Capitol and we and we see that You know, the

  695. Washington Memorial and Jesus stands over Jerusalem and the

  696. graves of the prophets and all the places where God promised

  697. and said when he drew near and he saw the city, he wept over

  698. it. And why did he weep?

  699. Sang would that you even you had known in this day.

  700. The things that make for peace Jesus acknowledged and

  701. understood that the world had not yet arrived and achieved the

  702. kind of peace that he desired, but what Jesus did his Jesus

  703. didn't take responsibility for that.

  704. He said, the problem is, we don't understand what peace

  705. looks like and then Jesus spoke directly and immediately to

  706. Common and popular concepts of what is and brings peace, right?

  707. So he says, if you had only known what piece was and then he

  708. says, for the day will come upon you when your enemies will set

  709. up a barricade around you, and Surround, you and hem you in on

  710. every side and will tear you down to the ground and your

  711. children with you. And they will not leave one

  712. stone upon another because you did not know the time of your

  713. visitation. And in 70 AD, the entire Roman

  714. army, surrounded the city of Jerusalem, and they be built

  715. sees. Work Siege works and they cut

  716. off the river going inside. So there was no And they waited

  717. it out. And, and the City of Jerusalem

  718. fell, the walls came down the emperor.

  719. Walked into the temple in Jerusalem and sacrificed an

  720. unclean Pig on the altar of God. And the idea, when he says, if

  721. you had only known, they were betting on a political solution

  722. to the ROM problem in Jesus said, as long as you follow

  723. that, all you're going to get our sieges and destruction and

  724. opposition power coming to take what you thought.

  725. Was yours and Jesus. Understood that won't lead.

  726. So the question for us at Christmas is, what are you

  727. counting on for peace? Because you may just say, man, I

  728. bet it all on crypto baby. I knew I'd if I'm going to have

  729. my business, if you did that, if your bed is on the economy for

  730. your piece, oops. If you if your hope for your

  731. pieces in your economy, or in your provision, you're subject

  732. to all kinds of crazy volatility.

  733. If your piece is in winning winning at work, winning in the

  734. economy, winning politically winning with your spouse,

  735. winning with your kids. If your piece is in winning than

  736. everybody else in the world is a threat to you.

  737. Because at any time, somebody else could rise up.

  738. If your pieces and appearances having the most followers, the

  739. best picture, the most curated lifestyle than everybody else is

  740. a threat to you. If your pieces in your strength,

  741. listen, if you bought into the American lie, the mythology that

  742. the whole Go West Young Man, the whole Marlboro, mad your man,

  743. you're a rugged, individualist if that's you.

  744. Do you know what the greatest fear in the world is for you.

  745. Age. Because you're not as strong

  746. today as you were yesterday, I'm 46 years old.

  747. I'll be 46 years old in a couple of weeks.

  748. I just want to tell you. Some of you are like how you

  749. just a kid, right in some of you are like dang, bro, how are you

  750. even walking? I know, listen.

  751. For those of you who are younger, let me just tell you.

  752. You may be surprised and shocked at how much closer the end

  753. themes when you're 46. Then when you're 30.

  754. You may be shocked at how quick those last couple of years with

  755. your kids goes, when you're 46 and not 30.

  756. And some of you are like, I wish I could get rid of some of my

  757. kids. I understand, I remember those

  758. days. but again, so even in that if we step back and we look at

  759. it, aren't we trading one unrest for another because what if our

  760. peace isn't in our kids, What if our peace isn't in our family?

  761. What if our piece isn't in our job or income or home?

  762. Or if any of those things, that's what Jesus knew.

  763. He said, you put your hope and all of these other things and

  764. you end up left and lost moved out and the message of

  765. Christmas, the message of God's promise message, going all the

  766. way back to Genesis and through all the prophets is that you

  767. don't get the Peace of Jesus without living the way of Jesus.

  768. You don't have Christmas without the cross.

  769. Jesus doesn't die. And come back and isn't

  770. resurrected. Then Jesus is just another baby

  771. born in another town and a Backwater of the Roman Empire

  772. and it really doesn't matter to us.

  773. But if Jesus died so that we could be forgiven and in Jesus

  774. was resurrected so that we could have eternal life in him.

  775. I hope you hear me and I hope your I say this with all the

  776. generals, if Jesus is who he said he is and if Jesus did what

  777. he said, he would do, then the life we live apart from him is

  778. fun. Into mentally incompatible with

  779. the eternity that he wants to give us.

  780. The piece that we seek and scratch out for ourselves is

  781. fundamentally incompatible with the peace that he wants to give

  782. us. Jesus said it this way and it's

  783. interesting. He said it in John, chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  784. Hours before his death at the time.

  785. When most of us would be the most freaked out.

  786. Most of us would be the least at peace.

  787. We beasts Krantz you know scurrying around trying to

  788. figure it out and try to do whatever and what Jesus said

  789. he's talking to his friends, John 14:26, but the helper the

    John 14:26

  790. Holy Spirit whom the father will send in my name.

  791. He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all

  792. that I have said to you. Peace.

  793. I leave you who like stop yelling at me about peace, I get

  794. it. Peace, I'm leaving you.

  795. Geez, are you leaving us rules know?

  796. Jesus. Are you leaving us law?

  797. No, I'm leaving you. Peace.

  798. Not as the world gives do. I give to you let your hearts.

  799. Not be troubled. Neither let them be afraid.

  800. God's desire, his plan. His purpose for your life is

  801. that you would live in peace. And I know that's hard.

  802. And I know that for many of us, even this Christmas season

  803. doesn't bring the peace. I want you to know that he has

  804. made provision for peace first. The first piece that he offers

  805. you. His peace with God, right?

  806. It's true. It has to start with there

  807. because our piece started with got the piece started with God

  808. and Adam and Eve and God and with Abram, right?

  809. So our piece starts with god. Listen to what he says, what

  810. Paul says in 2nd Corinthians chapter.

  811. Where is that 5 verse 17? Eventine if anyone is in Christ,

  812. he is a new creation. I just want you to say that old

  813. part fighting scrapping digging kicking calling manipulating all

  814. of those things, for the piece, trying to control other people,

  815. trying to force them, trying to get them, that's gone.

  816. The old has gone. The new has come.

  817. Now, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

  818. The old has passed away, behold. The new has come all.

  819. This is from God who through Christ reconciled us to himself.

  820. The word reconcile means made peace.

  821. He made peace with God. And he gave us the ministry of

  822. reconciliation. I can't say this enough.

  823. Are Mysteries to make peace with people who are far from God.

  824. If we create a Ministry context where people who are far from

  825. God are not welcome or addressed here, we're not doing what we're

  826. supposed to be doing. If people don't come to know and

  827. make peace with Jesus because of what we're doing here, we're not

  828. doing our job. However, nice.

  829. It feels to us, however, good. It feels for us, right?

  830. Right. That is, that is Renaissance, is

  831. in Christ. God was reconciling the world to

  832. himself. How did he do that?

  833. Not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to

  834. us. The message neck message of

  835. reconciliation. He didn't say saying there's no

  836. sin. He said not counting it against

  837. them. The problem is we look at the

  838. other people in the world and we go you have sinned.

  839. And then we hold it against them and we want them to pay us

  840. rather than leaning in and digging in.

  841. And going, you know, there's a God who loves you very much.

  842. He really wants to have a relationship with you.

  843. Yeah. But I am fill in the blank.

  844. Yeah. But there's a God who loves you

  845. and wants to have a relationship with you.

  846. He has made provision for peace and so listen.

  847. I don't know everybody in here. I don't know where you're coming

  848. from and I just want you to know that's God's desire for you when

  849. we talk about Commandments, right?

  850. When we talk about rules, when don't reach don't start in,

  851. Leviticus start here. Starting John 14.

  852. He went he came to make peace to give you his peace and you know

  853. what? His peace is eternal life and so

  854. he shows you what that life is like and what it looks like and

  855. he invites you into that so that you can walk into that so that

  856. you can be free. That's his desire for you.

  857. And if you're in here and you're not following him, if you never

  858. followed him and you thought he just wanted your money or he

  859. wanted something like that. Today, I want you to say Jesus,

  860. I want peace. I want the peace.

  861. That only you can give and you just confess.

  862. I'm not at peace, that's 10. And I want your piece, I turn

  863. away from all the things that don't cause peace and I turn to

  864. you, if that's you will you do me a favor?

  865. Will you just say, God, I want that.

  866. And it for the first time do you will you send a text message?

  867. Text the word follower 29. 4000, if you've never done that

  868. before, just say I want peace with God and I've never had that

  869. before. What we're told that you're not

  870. saved by sending in a text message.

  871. You're saved by Jesus by the piece.

  872. That he brings your saved by the peace.

  873. That only he can give the second thing that you have to do is let

  874. the Holy Spirit, teach us the way of Peace.

  875. Jesus talked and John chapter fourteen twenty six.

  876. The first thing he talks about is the Holy Spirit and you

  877. remember what he said, the Holy Spirit was going to do, it was

  878. going to remind him of all the things that Jesus had said, here

  879. are some things that Jesus said, are you ready?

  880. If you're offering your gift to The Altar and there remember

  881. that your brother has something against you?

  882. Leave your gift there before the Altar and go first.

  883. Be reconciled to your brother first.

  884. Make peace with your brother and then come and offer your gift.

  885. Jesus said that and if you want peace, the holy spirit will

  886. remind you of that. And it doesn't say if anybody

  887. has hurt your feeling, I think what the Holy Spirit would say

  888. is humbly lovingly, graciously to you Church stop being such

  889. babies Stop getting your feelings hurt.

  890. The world is not going to protect your right to worship.

  891. The one true God. The world is not going to

  892. celebrate your right to speak about a bar that they're not

  893. trying to reach. Stop expecting them to do that

  894. because they won't if you want peace go make peace and what

  895. that means is if you have caused trouble, you go make it right.

  896. That's the beginning of peace. And the Holy Spirit Will remind

  897. us that he says at the end, going on verse chapter, 5 also

  898. verse 23. So if you are off, we already

  899. read that. What's the other thing that he

  900. said? Let's go.

  901. He said this at the end verse 40, something you have heard

  902. that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your

  903. enemy but I say to you love your enemies and pray for those who

  904. persecute you so that you may be sons of your father who is in

  905. heaven for. He makes his sun to rise on the

  906. evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the

  907. unjust we want. Like goddamn withhold rain from

  908. the people who hurt us on the people who disagree with us from

  909. the people who don't value us like we need like we should be

  910. value and so the holy word, the Holy Spirit teaches us the way

  911. of Peace but listen the way of peace is the way of Jesus.

  912. And you know what, the way of Jesus is going to be, he calls

  913. to all of us die to those things in you that make you take the

  914. Apple from the tree. trust God's way, trust his life and his

  915. light even if it doesn't seem to make sense, walk in it and see

  916. if peace is an attendant and finally Repent of the way of

  917. anger and retribution. Do not be angry at other people.

  918. Nick Fox preached last week. Did he do a great job?

  919. Nick is like, Nick is, my is my best friend.

  920. Nick is a brother and I know that Nick told the story of the

  921. time of the other church when Nick and I work together to

  922. remember that remember what Nick talked about and we had a big

  923. blowup. I'm going to tell the story a

  924. little bit differently and some of you are like whoo, whoo,

  925. whoo. Good stuff right now.

  926. Listen. Every single thing that Nick

  927. said about that encounter was absolutely true.

  928. Here's what I want to add. We would not be here today.

  929. If Nick had not chosen the path of Grace.

  930. He told the story about us going to his house, right?

  931. In his living room and we had a talk out on the deck.

  932. He told that story, right? Remember him telling that story.

  933. Do you know why we were at Nick's house because Nick

  934. invited us in Nick didn't, he didn't make me answer for the

  935. pain that I caused. He forgave me, and he brought me

  936. in and I want you to know that kind of Grace has a impact.

  937. It changes us. It changes everything.

  938. My concern is because that way is harder because it is more

  939. costly to us. We don't choose that way.

  940. We choose to fight we choose to stand.

  941. And we choose to hunker down and to dig in and what we're left is

  942. war-torn battlefields of humanity crying out for peace.

  943. That Jesus says, if only you knew If only you knew I'm

  944. grateful that Nick chose the way of peace.

  945. I'm grateful that Nick chose to forgive and to extend love.

  946. I needed it. More than I knew.

  947. I needed it. That's what Jesus has for us.

  948. And so wherever you are, if you need peace, what I want to

  949. invite you to do is lean into Jesus, fill your life with this

  950. word. Fill your days with his

  951. presence. And every moment, remind

  952. yourself, God, you're here with me.

  953. What do you want to say? What do you want to do?

  954. What do you want to show me? And then obey radically,

  955. especially if it goes against your seemingly.

  956. Best instant. Let's pray Lord, I pray that you

  957. would make us peacemakers You came to fulfill all the promises

  958. you came to give us hope and a future.

  959. You came to give us abundance Jesus.

  960. And I pray that we would I pray for anyone in here today, who

  961. doesn't know you, who hasn't been following you and they need

  962. your peace. I pray that they would know.

  963. that has they confess you don't count their sins against them

  964. that you forgive them and I pray that you would make us in your

  965. church as we live in a divided peaceless society and culture I

  966. pray that we would take our position in the Gap and we would

  967. bring People to you, and it would be models of

  968. reconciliation and redemption in peace.

  969. I pray father, that your church as we trust, you would be a

  970. glory and an honor to you. We ask Jesus these things in

  971. your name and for your glory, amen, this is Harry and Karen,

  972. and this is Jaime and Megan Martinez.

  973. And they would just love to pray with you if you need prayer.

  974. If you need peace today, we stop by and talk to them.

  975. If you're new here and I haven't met you before.

  976. I'm going to be right here and I would love to talk to you and

  977. say hello. Low and just welcome you to
