  1. Father, thank you again for the fact that you are a rock, that

  2. you are unchanging God, that you're reliable.

  3. But also, Lord, thank you for the your mercy, the fact that

  4. you don't treat us like we deserve to be treated despite

  5. who we are and the things we've done.

  6. You've provided a way for us to connect to you through Jesus

  7. Christ. Well, we just pray for Andrew

  8. this morning as he brings your word to us.

  9. Well, we just pray for, yeah, we thank you for his diligence in,

  10. in, in studying that out and working it out and communicating

  11. with you to, to figure out what it is that the important parts

  12. of this message that we need to know.

  13. And Lord, we just pray for us this morning that we would have

  14. our, our hearts and minds open to, to listen, to be changed by

  15. your word, maybe be rattled by a little bit, but whatever it

  16. takes all we want to be closer to you.

  17. And so we just pray for that this morning.

  18. Lord, we thank you for the opportunity to give an offering

  19. to you and, and, and we present that offering to you now, Lord,

  20. And thank you that we know it all comes from you.

  21. And as a token, we, we want to demonstrate that throughout

  22. offering as an act of worship. And we thank you for the

  23. opportunity to do that, Lord, thank you that you're a God who

  24. who sees every little detail in their lives and cares about it.

  25. And we thank you for that. Thank you for a chance to

  26. together worship and learn and grow this morning.

  27. Pray these things in Jesus name, Amen.

  28. Great. Good morning everyone and

  29. welcome again if you're a visitor especially and what a

  30. special day it is. I thought I was fairly safe

  31. volunteering for this little message on Galatians Chapter 5.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  32. And then of course, we had the baptism arranged as well, and

  33. fellowship lunch and everything else too, so that we've got a

  34. real small dashboard today and it's just such a bonus.

  35. So thank you for your support. Thanks for flying in to hear the

  36. message and we'll look forward to God's Word.

  37. Nothing to do with me whatsoever.

  38. Please turn to Galatians chapter 5 and we're going to take a

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  39. reading 1st and then we'll have some words of introduction.

  40. We're reading from Galatians 5 verse 16 when I say, walk by the

    Galatians 5:16

  41. Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

  42. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the

  43. desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.

  44. For these are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the

  45. things you want to do. But if you are led by the

  46. Spirit, you are not under the law.

  47. Now the works of the flesh are evident.

  48. Sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery,

  49. enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries,

  50. dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies and things

  51. like these. I warn you as I warned you

  52. before, that those who do such things will not inherit the

  53. Kingdom of God, but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,

  54. patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,

  55. self-control. Against such things there is no

  56. law, and those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the

  57. flesh with his passions and desires.

  58. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the

  59. Spirit. Let us not become conceited,

  60. provoking one another, envying one another.

  61. This is the Word of God. These verses that we have read,

  62. especially concerning the fruit of the Spirit, well known to

  63. many and very much enjoyed by many.

  64. And I'm sure you'll be thinking, well, that would be just a

  65. lovely subject to go ahead with today.

  66. You see, everybody, as far as I know, likes fijos.

  67. Is anyone here in the room who doesn't like fijos?

  68. Excellent, excellent. I'm with you.

  69. I'm not a future fan who likes fijos.

  70. OK, wonderful, wonderful. So most most enjoy a message on

  71. Fiji on fruit. And here's a photo of grandson

  72. Daniel. And he just loves fijos.

  73. For technical and logistical reasons, his mother only allows

  74. him to have one a day. But today I actually want to

  75. focus on fate, not fruit. You see the book of Galatians

  76. has a lot to say about walking and this chapter in fact

  77. Galatians 5 is actually all about walking talks and verse

  78. one about standing talks about running well and verse 7 verse

  79. 16 to walk and verse 25 to keep in step.

  80. Little Daniel is in this photo not just enjoying the future,

  81. but he's actually almost about to walk.

  82. In fact, just a week ago he started to walk and he's on the

  83. way to catching up with his friend Boaz.

  84. So that's going to be an interesting journey.

  85. Just like in Christian life, there's progress, there's

  86. failure, there are old ways to give up, and there's new lessons

  87. to learn. And today, of course, we are

  88. witnessing the baptisms of James and Kate and Jasmine.

  89. And for you, my prayer is that this will be a an important step

  90. in your journey of faith. This step of obedience will be

  91. part of a continuing walk of faith, of freedom and bearing

  92. fruit in Christian life. So to understand this passage,

  93. we need a little bit of background and we need to review

  94. the journey of Paul to this stage.

  95. And we're going to call it Paul's footsteps.

  96. And please stay tuned because as we do that, we'll actually

  97. discover how it was Paul also made the decision to be baptised

  98. and take that step of obedience. So first of all, Paul was a

  99. Pharisee. He was brought up in the ways of

  100. Judaism and he was a an expert in that field, so much so that

  101. he was at a young age sent away from home, from Tarsus to

  102. Jerusalem to study at the feet of a famous rabbi called

  103. Damelio. And he was an absolute

  104. intellectual giant. He was well versed in the ways

  105. of Judaism. Of course, Judaism is a very

  106. important religion of the Jews. Where their way of faith and

  107. living is based on the first five books of the Bible, the

  108. Torah, and as part of that they also add in other rabbinical law

  109. and various ways of living of diet and also the right of

  110. circumcision. And as part of that, they are

  111. trying to follow God's will for them.

  112. Now, by the way, there's actually nothing too wrong with

  113. law, is there? I'm actually quite pleased that

  114. there's a common community law at the roundabout here at at

  115. Clarkin Rd. And I quite like the fact that

  116. here in New Zealand we pretty much respect queues at the bank

  117. and at the supermarket and especially when we have lunch

  118. afterwards. You know, it's quite good to

  119. have laws that actually teach us the right way and keep us on

  120. track. But the problem with the way of

  121. Judaism and the problem for Paul was that he was advancing in

  122. such a way that he actually was becoming radicalised.

  123. And part of the way of Judaism is a way that feeds the thought

  124. of achievement, of keeping regulations and going down a

  125. certain pathway and as a result, potentially becoming very proud.

  126. And so Paul was actually a very good man.

  127. He was an intellectual, he was a Pharisee of Pharisees, he was a

  128. Hebrew of Hebrews. He was trained and schooled to

  129. walk a good journey as a Pharisee, but with that came

  130. performance and with that came pride and with that came

  131. comparison and rules. And as he went down that

  132. journey, he actually turn into Paul the persecutor.

  133. I was a blasphemer, A persecutor and an insolent opponent, he

  134. writes. And then we read that Saul his

  135. his first name before he became known as Paul, Saul, was

  136. ravaging the church and entering house to house and dragging off

  137. men and women and committing them to prison.

  138. Paul was actually a murderer. Paul was at the feet of those

  139. who were persecuting the church. He was behind it all.

  140. He was consenting to it, and he was violent.

  141. He was murderous and blasphemous.

  142. He persecuted the Church of God so violently because he was

  143. convinced that his way was the right way and the best way, and

  144. he was opposed to all that. Christianity represented the way

  145. as it was called in those days. It's an interesting type title

  146. for it. He was convinced that his way

  147. was the right way and what they were doing was something that

  148. had to be squashed out. We read in ex.

    Exodus 9 chapter mention

  149. Chapter 9 that Paul actually got letters from the authorities and

  150. he was out to murder and to destroy the church.

  151. And as he was walking along, travelling on the road to

  152. Damascus with these letters to arrest and to bring to justice

  153. these people that he was opposed to, as he was travelling along

  154. with a group of people, a light shone from heaven, and a voice

  155. came. And the voice had so, So why do

  156. you persecute me? And soul was struck to the

  157. ground and unable to see. And he said, Who are you, Lord?

  158. And the voice from heaven said, I am Jesus who you are

  159. persecuting Paul the Pharisee, pull the persecutor.

  160. And now asking this question from this light from heaven, who

  161. are you, Lord? And by the way, there is

  162. probably one of the most important questions that you and

  163. I must ever ask. Perhaps you've never thought of

  164. that before, but have you ever asked that question?

  165. Who are you, Lord Jesus? Who are you, Lord?

  166. That is a question we almost answer in our lives.

  167. And by the way, this light from heaven was a light that did not

  168. fade in Paul's memory. In fact, as he got older, he

  169. recalled it even more vividly. He described it here as a light

  170. from heaven. But later on, as he spoke to

  171. officials and gave his testimony, he said it was a

  172. great light from heaven. And later on he said it was a

  173. light brighter than the noonday sun and that light shone and

  174. arrested him in his pathway in his journey.

  175. Paul said to this light, Who are you, Lord?

  176. He's led to Damascus and we read an ex Chapter 9 that he's

    Exodus 9 chapter mention

  177. praying and God spoke to a man called Barnabas and said to him

  178. and a nice, I think it is, let's just go back to that and says to

  179. him analyse, go and visit Wall. Go and see this man and he is

  180. praying, an analyst says to God, Lord, I've heard things about

  181. this man. This man is persecuting the

  182. church. He's here to destroy the church.

  183. And you asking me to go and see him.

  184. And the word came Go analyse. He is a chosen instrument to

  185. carry my name before Gentiles in kings and the children of

  186. Israel. And then an ice came to this man

  187. at this point called Saul, and said, Brother saw the Lord Jesus

  188. who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me,

  189. that you may regain your sight and be filled with His Holy

  190. Spirit. And immediately something like

  191. scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight.

  192. Then he rose and was baptised. Now I want you to notice the

  193. sequence of events. Paul sees the light from heaven.

  194. He hears the voice. He prays to God.

  195. He receives his sight and then he's baptised to Baptism is not

  196. salvation. We don't get baptised to be

  197. saved, but we get baptised when we receive the light from heaven

  198. and understand our condition before God.

  199. And so he read the next Chapter 9 that when he rose and was

  200. baptised, he took food, and he was strengthened.

  201. And so after James and Okay, then Jasmine get baptised,

  202. they're allowed to take food and they'll be strengthened.

  203. I'm sure they're looking forward to that.

  204. Not too nervous, but you see the sequence event is very clear.

  205. Salvation and then baptism. And so Paul the Pharisee, Paul

  206. the persecutor then is very radically transformed and he

  207. becomes poor, the preacher. And we read in Galatians chapter

  208. one that they said of him, isn't this amazing?

  209. This man who was once persecuting the Church of God is

  210. now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy, and they

  211. glorified God. This was the miracle.

  212. This was the transformation in the life of Paul, and a few

  213. weeks ago one of our speakers referred to this as one of the

  214. convincing proofs of the gospel in the New Testament.

  215. The transformation of Paul the Pharisee, the persecutor, to now

  216. be preaching the faith he once wanted to destroy.

  217. What did he preach? Well, the book of Galatians is

  218. very much part of what he preached.

  219. But here in Galatians 2 verse 20, I have on the screen one of

    Galatians 2:20

  220. the key verses that pull the preacher spoke, and this was his

  221. testimony to the readers. I have been crucified with

  222. Christ. It is no longer I who live, but

  223. Christ who lives in me and the life I now live in the flesh.

  224. I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave

  225. himself for me. So what does it mean to be

  226. baptised? Well here in this first we have

  227. a very beautiful picture of what it means to be baptised.

  228. I have been crucified with Christ.

  229. The person who has been baptised is literally saying that they

  230. are identifying with the death of Christ.

  231. They are dying to self. I have been crucified with

  232. Christ. It is no longer I who live.

  233. And so we baptise someone who has died.

  234. Christ lives in me, in the life. I now live in the flesh.

  235. I live by faith and we rise again.

  236. I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave

  237. himself for me. And so we have Dine with Christ,

  238. we have burial with Christ, and we have rising with Christ.

  239. And that is the picture of baptism that we'll be seen in a

  240. little while. Baptism is not salvation.

  241. Paul was saved, he received his sight and was then baptised.

  242. And baptism is an immersion in water.

  243. It is actually going under the water, just like a burial.

  244. It is death to the old and rising again to newness of life.

  245. Baptism is a step of obedience and a public testimony of

  246. identification with Jesus and a commitment to follow in the

  247. steps of the Lord Jesus. What a wonderful testimony it is

  248. to hear from James and Kate and Jasmine today how they have been

  249. on this journey and come to this decision to receive Christ as

  250. Lord and Saviour, and then to publicly testify in the waters

  251. of baptism their obedience. And so the gospel is revealed,

  252. not as a system of rules and regulations and external

  253. behaviour, but the gospel is presented as new life in Christ.

  254. It is not achieving, but it is believing.

  255. It is a relationship, not rules. We are justified, Paul says, by

  256. faith and not by works that we have done, not something that we

  257. put on on the external, but something that happens within

  258. us, by the renewing, rescuing work of the Holy Spirit of God.

  259. The message of Galatians sets us free.

  260. The message of Galatians tells us that we should not go back to

  261. the old way, the old way of living, the old way of rules and

  262. self effort. There is no other gospel.

  263. Now there's a story of a believer who was baptised and as

  264. they came out of the water they said.

  265. I am so glad that now I won't have to struggle with evil

  266. thoughts to which the person who had baptised them said.

  267. To achieve that, I will need to hold you under the water for a

  268. little longer. You see, the crucified victim

  269. took a long time to die, and the Christian life is a battle that

  270. has been one at the cross. Through the finished work of the

  271. Lord Jesus, the penalty for sin has been paid in full, but the

  272. power of sense still lingers until that glorious day when we

  273. are liberated forever from the presence of sin.

  274. So in these 11 verses. Pull the preacher gives us 3

  275. steps. Three steps in the process of

  276. learning to walk and taking the footsteps of faith.

  277. Just for the sake of time, for the sake of those who have been

  278. baptised and for the testimonies to follow, I'm just going to

  279. really just give you that outline this this morning and

  280. speak briefly to these verses. Faith in Jesus Christ brings

  281. forgiveness and freedom. Following Christ yields fruit

  282. and then these 3 verses 33 sections we have a conflict.

  283. There is thought of being walking by the Spirit, there's

  284. control being led by the Spirit, and there is a commitment to

  285. keep in step with the Spirit. Pull the writer who reminds the

  286. Galatians about a war that is going on between two forces, the

  287. flesh and the spirit. It's an irreconcilable conflict.

  288. It's a civil war that is going on consistently.

  289. The Scripture says the desires of the flesh are against the

  290. spirit and the desires of the spirit are against the flesh,

  291. and these are opposed. There's a battle going on in the

  292. life of the believer, and if there's not a battle going on in

  293. the life of believer, it may mean that you are not walking in

  294. the Christian way like Paul in Romans.

  295. We sometimes even cry out what a wretched man I am who will

  296. deliver me from this body of death.

  297. The results of the flesh I listed.

  298. And at first glance they seem like a a sundry list of vices

  299. and evil. But the categories are moral and

  300. relational and behavioural. And as we dig deeper, we find

  301. there's a common thread, a common denominator in all of

  302. these works. You see these works that are

  303. described there? They're listed for us.

  304. They are all works that involve control.

  305. They are works of the flesh that refer to that which is in

  306. control within us, the work of self.

  307. You see, the work of self is to please and satisfy one's own

  308. desires. All the addictions, the

  309. appetites, the ambitions are symptoms of who and what is in

  310. control in our lives. These works that are listed here

  311. in verse 19. Immorality, impurity,

  312. sensuality, idolatry, and so on. They are all that which derives

  313. from a heart without a moral compass, dominated by the fleet.

  314. For example, idolatry is something apart from God, which

  315. receives our worship. Digging down into the words

  316. behind these, the Greek words, you'll find that the word for

  317. immorality is actually porneia. And that's where we get the word

  318. pornography from, from everything that is related to

  319. sexual immorality, the appetites of the flesh, the word for

  320. witchcraft is the word pharmakeia.

  321. And again, there's the thoughts that even drug use, drunkenness

  322. all refers to that loss of control and allowing the the the

  323. evil spirits of this world to take control of our lives.

  324. I wonder if we can consider it in this way.

  325. Most of us are familiar with YouTube, but have you noticed

  326. how subtle and how pervasive YouTube is?

  327. So if you actually search on something footy or chess or

  328. cricket or whatever, you'll find that from then on that algorithm

  329. works, that it will actually populate related videos and

  330. clips to that topic. Likewise, if you are a fan of

  331. Team You, you'll find that if you are looking for, say, some

  332. reading glasses, you'll find that for weeks and weeks you'll

  333. get a lot of related thoughts and communications on glasses.

  334. Choose anything else you like. Choose a hat, choose clothes,

  335. choose shoes, whatever. You'll find that that algorithm

  336. will continue to construct and populate and flash into your

  337. senses and into your brain. And you can say, well, I could

  338. get that there and that I could actually fill the house with

  339. reading glasses. This is how the works of the

  340. flesh operate, and as we start small, we find that actually

  341. things start to get bigger and bigger.

  342. Sorcery is a life that has been given over to the forces of

  343. darkness. Drunkenness for example, is a

  344. disease of a body and a mind out of control and each behaviour

  345. starts small and then multiplies.

  346. And verse 21 says this. Those who do these things will

  347. not inherit the Kingdom of God. When we read that verse, we

  348. might be saying, does that mean I'm disqualified?

  349. Well, let me be quite clear here.

  350. The Word of God is, say, stating here that those who are

  351. habitually practising this way are not in the pathway of the

  352. Kingdom of God. It's referring to the ongoing

  353. habitual practise of godlessness, which may be an

  354. indication that you are not a child of God now.

  355. There is no truce in this civil war.

  356. There is no there is no middle ground.

  357. There's no kind of no man's land where you can say, ohh, well,

  358. today I'm going to just make peace with this enemy of the

  359. soul. Some years ago, many, many years

  360. ago actually, I owned some Guinea pigs and I named them

  361. after two famous chess players in the 1970s, which may give you

  362. an indication of my age. Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer

  363. and Boris and Robert were great friends.

  364. They got on really well together until one day I made a big

  365. mistake. I allowed a friend to borrow

  366. Robert for a little while. On his return, Robert treated

  367. Boris as a fierce enemy and they fought everyday.

  368. They were clicking their teeth, they were biting and tearing

  369. clumps of fur and hair from each other.

  370. And finally, in desperation, I changed the cage and I divided

  371. the cage into two. And still they hated each other.

  372. They insulted each other everyday.

  373. It was a very sad end to my Guinea pig days.

  374. And don't be fooled, the ceasefire will not last, and the

  375. ceasefire does not even exist. There is no truce.

  376. You must stand on the right side.

  377. I want to give James and Kate and Jasmine 3 words today from

  378. these verses and the the first word is this.

  379. You must stand. Stand on the gospel.

  380. Stand on the finished work of the Lord Jesus.

  381. Stand on the fact that Christ has won the victory for you and

  382. paid the price for your forgiveness and all your

  383. salvation. And verse 22 says this.

  384. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, and all of those

  385. fruits are those which express the victorious, sanctified work

  386. of Christ in the life of the believer, where we can stand on

  387. the promises of God and His strength in our lives to bring

  388. us to victory. Let's think about these fruits

  389. for a moment. There's something about fruit

  390. that is very remarkable. It's it's something very

  391. beautiful. It's fragrant.

  392. It's quiet it it just seems to happen.

  393. I have. I have these feature trees

  394. outside my office and every year, without fail, seemingly

  395. out of nowhere, these these beautiful, beautiful fruit

  396. develop quietly, fruitfully, blessing each of us.

  397. And then they're gone again. In a weeks time they're gone.

  398. You know when they start to arrive, everybody's so excited.

  399. In fact, Gavin told me that it's green gold.

  400. You know, that was two days before all the other features

  401. arrived, and then everybody doesn't want to know.

  402. But for about two days, everybody wants to have these

  403. features and then everybody's got fejos and then they're gone

  404. again. This autumn fruit is just so

  405. amazing. The fruit of the Spirit is

  406. described as singular, and if you were to cut this this fruit

  407. in half, you'll find that within this fruit there's clusters.

  408. It's one fruit, but within that there's these different parts.

  409. Likewise in the fruit of the Spirit.

  410. It's a fruit that is actually in many parts, but it's all one

  411. unit interrelated, and each of these qualities are actually the

  412. qualities and the personality and work and life of Christ

  413. within. You see, His love is a perfect

  414. love, the love of God and the Lord Jesus brings a joy and a

  415. peace that this world cannot give.

  416. And as we have His Spirit in our lives as believers, we have that

  417. love and that joy and that peace unfolding and blessing.

  418. And that fragrance results the joy and peace this world cannot

  419. give. And you can't mass produce this

  420. figure. You cannot produce this in the

  421. factory. Lots of people try, but they

  422. cannot do it because it's actually a result of inner life,

  423. connection with the source of life.

  424. John 15 tells us that to be fruitful we need to abide or

  425. remain connected to the source of life, which is the true Vine,

  426. the Lord Jesus Christ. And as we are connected to that,

  427. we are able to walk by the Spirit.

  428. And so James, Kate and Jasmine stand and walk.

  429. Choose today to abide in this wonderful source of spiritual

  430. strength and vitality and nutrition, to allow yourself to

  431. walk by the Spirit and live by the Spirit.

  432. And as you do that, you'll find that the fruit of the Spirit is

  433. that which relates to God and relates to others and also

  434. relates to your own personal walk and relationship with

  435. Christ. You will have that gentleness

  436. and faithfulness and self-control that only comes

  437. from being connected with the source of life.

  438. The fruit of the Spirit is liberating.

  439. It is that which is so compelling and so fragrant that

  440. people will walk into a room and say what a beautiful person to

  441. be with, because the fruit of the Spirit is abounding and

  442. fragrant and liberating. And that is the work of Christ.

  443. It is not something that we can do of our own accord.

  444. It's not something we can put on.

  445. We cannot mass produce it. We cannot do that by keeping

  446. rules and regulations. It is a relationship with

  447. Christ, the source. Thirdly, for our baptises today,

  448. the thought in verse 25 is this. If we live by the Spirit lead,

  449. that's also keep in step with the Spirit.

  450. And here the Word I want to leave with you is the Word

  451. follow, stand, walk and follow. Keep in step with the one who

  452. has called us. And like Paul, we must answer

  453. that same question. Who are you, Lord Jesus?

  454. And also we need to ask that question, what will you have me

  455. to do, Lord? That is another question that

  456. Paul said he asked on that journey.

  457. Today, believers in Christ, we stand on the gospel.

  458. It is a gospel that is not one by rules and regulations.

  459. It is a life that is lives by a connection with the Christ who

  460. has died for us and paid the price for us and and set us

  461. free. This is the gospel.

  462. There is no other gospel. And Paul says to his readers,

  463. don't go back. Don't go back to the old way.

  464. Stay true to this journey that you have committed yourself to

  465. Walk in the Spirit. Live by the Spirit and follow.

  466. Keep in step with the Spirit and very soon we will be singing

  467. this song. There is no gospel like this one

  468. and I wanna just give you my little testimony here.

  469. You see, today is a a lot about testimonies.

  470. Paul's testimony, his journey and the test means we are about

  471. to hear. But my test may simply there's

  472. that the words are poor in First Timothy chapter 1, where the

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  473. words that I read at the age of about four or five and these are

  474. the words from First Timothy. This is a faithful saying and

  475. worthy of all acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the world

  476. to save sinners, of whom I'm the worst.

  477. That was Paul's testimony and that is my testimony.

  478. That is how I became a Christian at the age of four or five in

  479. India on the basis of that verse.

  480. And from there we have been able to keep in step and follow the

  481. Master. I pray today that you all today,

  482. James and Kate and Jasmine, find the reality of walking step by

  483. step with the Master and know His peace in your heart and know

  484. the joy of fellowship with Christ.

  485. And as you do that, you'll continue to find that victory

  486. which is won through the freedom of knowing the Lord Jesus as

  487. Saviour and Lord.
