  1. Loving Father, we thank you so much for your invitation to us

  2. today to draw near to You, to come to the fount of every

  3. blessing, to drink from the waters of life freely, and to

  4. bring glory and worship in unto you.

  5. Lord, today we want to acknowledge how great you are,

  6. how good you are to us, how merciful and loving.

  7. Thank you for your grace. Thank you for the hope that you

  8. give to those who believe in you.

  9. Thank you for the gift of your beloved Son that kept him of our

  10. salvation. So Father, we thank you for him

  11. today. We thank you for the offering

  12. that we've been able to give to you.

  13. Lord in love. Today we bring that to you with

  14. simplicity and dedicate it to your service and to your

  15. Kingdom. We thank you for your precious

  16. word, Lord, and as the senior school and teachers and the

  17. children go out, we ask for your blessing and help for them.

  18. We thank you for Billy and for the word that he has prepared

  19. and the message from yourself. Lord, we pray for your blessing.

  20. We pray for open hearts as we hear your word to us today.

  21. We pray this in Jesus name, Amen.

  22. Thank you, Andrew. Good morning Church hey are open

  23. with me in your Bibles to the book of Luke, the book of Luke

  24. and this morning will be in Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  25. Now if you're if you're visiting or you are new welcome special

  26. welcomes you. We are on a journey as a church

  27. through the gospel of Luke. One of the four accounts we have

  28. of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ and specifically we were

  29. at and the gospel of Luke is we're looking at this sermon

  30. that Jesus gave, which we'd call the the sermon on the plane

  31. literally because he he came out on a plane space and and

  32. delivered the sermon to his disciples and a bunch of other

  33. people who were listening as well.

  34. And so Dan took us through the first section and we're going to

  35. be looking at the second section of this sermon this morning.

  36. So let's read. We're going to be looking just

  37. this morning at versus 27 through 36, Luke 6 versus 27

  38. through 36. So let's let's read the word and

  39. then we will jump in. This is the word of our Lord.

  40. But I say to you, who here love your enemies, do good to those

  41. who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who

  42. abuse you. To the one who strikes you on

  43. the cheek offered the other also, and from the one who takes

  44. away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.

  45. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from the one who takes

  46. away your goods, do not demand them back.

  47. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

  48. If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you?

  49. For even sinners love those who love them.

  50. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is

  51. that to you? For even sinners do the same.

  52. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what

  53. credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to

  54. get back the same amount. But love your enemies and do

  55. good, and lend expecting nothing in return.

  56. And your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most

  57. High. For He is kind to the ungrateful

  58. and the evil. Be merciful even as your Father

  59. is merciful. Amen.

  60. Well, if you've seen the movie Forrest Gump, I'm sure you would

  61. remember the scene where Forest turns to his love interest

  62. Jeannie and he says I love you Jenny.

  63. I'm not going to try his voice. He says I love you Jenny, and

  64. Jenny replies to him. Forest, you don't know what love

  65. is. Well, I, I think this word love

  66. is, it's a word that's thrown around plenty in our culture and

  67. in our society. In fact, merely looking around

  68. the world, I think highlights the fact that we, I think we're

  69. obsessed with love. We're obsessed with the word

  70. love. In 2022, of the Billboard Top

  71. 100 songs of the year, they found that 80% of those songs

  72. had love as a key theme of the song.

  73. The year before, it was 90%. Almost every movie we watch find

  74. some way to sneak a side plot about love into the movie.

  75. Like if you go to watch Pearl Harbour and you want to learn

  76. about Pearl Harbour, you're not going to learn a lot about Pearl

  77. Harbour, but you might learn one or two things about love.

  78. Most people in New Zealand, if you wanna watch something on TV

  79. at night, you get to choose between Love Island.

  80. Love Is blind love on the spectrum.

  81. I think our society is obsessed with love.

  82. I think Love Is All around us. And I use some of these pop

  83. culture references because I think popular music and TV, it

  84. gives us an insight into the world that we live in.

  85. It gives us an insight into, you know, these are the things that

  86. are feeding us, whether we're paying attention to it or

  87. whether it's going on in the background, these are the things

  88. that are feeding us. And I think that these songs and

  89. these movies are successful for a reason, because the world is

  90. searching for something. The world is passionate about

  91. love and, and, and, and the world is feeding us some sort of

  92. idea about love, a certain picture of love.

  93. But as we come to these words this morning, the words of Jesus

  94. as he speaks about love, I can't help but feel like Ginny when

  95. he's speaking, like Jeannie when she says to Forest, you don't

  96. know what love is. I wonder, have we completely

  97. missed what true biblical love is?

  98. Have we missed what true biblical love is?

  99. And that's what we're going to look at this morning as we look

  100. at this. Jesus is actually going to show

  101. us this morning two ways to love.

  102. He's going to compare and contrast the love of the world

  103. with the love that should characterise his believers and

  104. his followers. And, and really that's what he's

  105. doing in this entire cement on the plane, which is kind of that

  106. the latter half of Luke chapter 6 in the sermon.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  107. He is showing this is the way that the world lives and this is

  108. what it should look like for his followers, for the followers of

  109. Jesus Christ. And so last week Dan looked at

  110. this is the way that the world prioritises or views blessing

  111. and happiness and joy. This is what blessing and

  112. happiness and joy should look like for believers.

  113. And so this week he's going to do this with love.

  114. And then next week we're going to come back and we're going to

  115. look at that in the in the sense of judging others.

  116. But this week we're looking at two ways to love.

  117. How does the world view love? And how should we as Jesus

  118. followers view love? And really, Jesus command to us

  119. simply is that we should love differently to the world.

  120. We should love differently to the world.

  121. The love of a believer, the love of a follower of Jesus Christ

  122. should look remarkably different to the love that the world

  123. values and the love that the world speaks of.

  124. And I will just say at the start, when we think of love, we

  125. typically think of romantic love.

  126. Jesus isn't primarily speaking here about romantic love.

  127. He's focused on how we we view love in general, how we love all

  128. people around us. So my prayer is that this kind

  129. of love is going to be the kind of thing that we can apply

  130. obviously to our enemies, but also to our friends, to our

  131. spouses, to our children, to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  132. He's giving us a new framework for love.

  133. So what we're going to do actually is we're gonna jump

  134. into the middle of the passage first.

  135. We're going to start at verse 32.

  136. And I guess look at the way that Jesus diagnoses that the the

  137. love of the world. What is the type of love that

  138. the world values that the world speaks of?

  139. And then we're going to go back to the start of the passage and

  140. then ask, OK, what is the kind of love that we should have as

  141. followers of Jesus? So how does the world love will

  142. read again versus 32 to 34? Jesus sees if you love those who

  143. love you, what benefit is that to you?

  144. For even sinners love those who love them.

  145. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is

  146. that to you? For even sinners do the same.

  147. And if you lean to those from whom you expect to receive, what

  148. credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to

  149. get back the same amount. So how does the world love you?

  150. You'll see three times in this text Jesus repeats, Even sinners

  151. do that. Even sinners do that.

  152. So Jesus is saying that there is a way that the world or or

  153. society or our sinful nature wants to love.

  154. So the world does love, but what kind of love is it?

  155. Well, I think simply the love of the world is, I'd say,

  156. transactional. The love of the world is

  157. inherently transactional. Look at the way he sees it, he

  158. says. The love of the world will love

  159. those who love them. The love of the world would do

  160. good to those who do good to them.

  161. It will lend to those whom they expect to receive.

  162. So it's completely dependent. I will love those who will love

  163. me back. I'll do good if I will get good

  164. back. I'll lend if I get something

  165. back and return. So simply I'd say who is the

  166. focus of this kind of love? The focus is self.

  167. And so first and foremost, the love of the world, it needs to

  168. receive the ground level. For me to love, I have to be

  169. loved. For me to do good, I have to

  170. know I'm going to get good in return.

  171. So first and foremost, the love of the world needs to receive

  172. love before it's willing to give love.

  173. It's inward focused. We receive and then we give.

  174. And it's interesting because I guess if you, if you do a Google

  175. or you know, if you look at the way that the world speaks about

  176. love, I don't think they're going to speak about it as

  177. openly as as I've just laid it out here.

  178. If you ask, you know, someone in in the world, you say, you know

  179. what is love. And they wouldn't necessarily

  180. say this, but I think when we look at the world and actually

  181. when we look at our own hearts, this is inherent in the way that

  182. we live and in the way that we love.

  183. When the love that is coming inward breaks down, the whole

  184. relationship of love breaks down.

  185. The top song in New Zealand at the moment is by Olivia Dean.

  186. It's called Man I Need. You might recognise it from the

  187. radio. It's it's pretty catchy.

  188. But one of the main lyrics in this is she says come be the man

  189. I need. Tell me you got something to

  190. give. I want it, and I think that that

  191. kind of speaks to that. What can I get from you?

  192. What have you got for me? And then if I can receive love,

  193. I will hand out love. And I think by nature, the same

  194. goes the other way. If we receive evil, if we

  195. receive wrong, what do we want? We want justice.

  196. You know, if you're going to harm me, I'm going to harm you

  197. back. And I think we find this

  198. satisfying. Any action movie you watch, we

  199. have this. If you've ever read like a Lee

  200. Child Reacher book, usually the last scene finishes with Jack

  201. Reacher, the good guy walking away from the scene and the bad

  202. guys in a pool of his own blood. He's died and justice is done

  203. and the reader is satisfied because evil was handed out and

  204. then evil was handed back to the bad guy.

  205. This is what we want. Jesus is gonna give us different

  206. vision here. And so I think inherent, this is

  207. the way that the world loves. It is a transactional two way

  208. relationship. It's it's focused on self.

  209. When the love end breaks down, the love outward breaks down.

  210. And I think inherent in this is the notion that love is

  211. primarily not a feeling. Sorry, love is primarily a

  212. feeling. It's not an action.

  213. Love is a feeling. It's not an action.

  214. No, it's not a choice. The love.

  215. It's a feeling that we have the the romantic love at Bubbles U.

  216. We have that feeling. When that feeling goes away, the

  217. love goes away. That's how it goes, and I think

  218. the world will tell us that love is a feeling.

  219. When the feeling leaves, I no longer need to love that person.

  220. So what? What's the problem with this?

  221. What's the problem with this kind of love?

  222. And we'll get to it more later. I'm going to kind of unpack it

  223. all a little bit more later, but I'll just lay this out.

  224. I think the problem is if If this is love.

  225. If love is if love is transactional, it's not love.

  226. This is not love Christian Christian author.

  227. I really enjoy Edward Welch. He sees to us in this model

  228. we're not loving people. Actually a better word to use as

  229. we are needing people. My relationship with other

  230. people is not love, it is needed.

  231. So we're actually like a Leech. We're attached to them and we're

  232. going, I need to get from you what what I need out of this

  233. relationship. This relationship is not you

  234. focused. It's me focused.

  235. And when I stop getting what I need, I no longer need this

  236. relationship. When one side breaks down, it it

  237. all does. Maybe you'll say this is a

  238. cynical take, but maybe I'd ask you to assist your own heart.

  239. I've been assisting my heart this week and I think my heart

  240. spends a lot of time doing this, looking to different

  241. relationships based off what I can get out of it and and I grow

  242. better when the N word is not coming in.

  243. So how does the world define love?

  244. It is, it is transactional, it is a feeling.

  245. And so I think that's what Jesus is saying here.

  246. You love those who love you. And so if this is the world, how

  247. the world defines love, I think the question comes how then

  248. should we as followers of Jesus, how should we define love?

  249. How should we love? Let's read what She's a sees.

  250. Going back to verse 27, he sees. But I say to you, who here love

  251. your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who

  252. curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

  253. It's the one who strikes you on the cheek off of the other.

  254. Also to the one who takes away your cloak.

  255. Do not withhold your tunic. Give to everyone who begs from

  256. you and to the one who takes away your goods.

  257. Do not demand them back and as you wish that others would do to

  258. you, do so to them. So if the love of the world is

  259. inward focused, the love that we should have and should identify

  260. us as followers of Jesus as primarily outward focused.

  261. It's not transactional. It's not waiting for something

  262. to come inward. It is completely outward

  263. focused. I think Jesus is showing this to

  264. the extreme right when he sees love your enemies.

  265. We should love our enemies, do good to those who hate us, bless

  266. those who curse us and so on. And, and this kind of love to,

  267. to love your enemies, it just doesn't fit at all within the

  268. framework of the world. In fact, all that we are

  269. receiving is enmity, hatred, cursing and abuse.

  270. And so yet actually, even when we received that, we should meet

  271. it back with love, goodness, blessing, prayer.

  272. And he's going to give some specific illustrations of this

  273. in verse 29 and 30. So he says, hey, if someone

  274. comes in and strikes you on the cheek, you'll imagine like,

  275. literally, if someone comes in, you're walking down the street,

  276. someone slaps you on the cheek. What?

  277. What's your first reaction like? The blood starts to boil.

  278. You want vengeance. Maybe you'll assess how big they

  279. are before you think about striking back.

  280. But you wouldn't want vengeance, right?

  281. You would want or you'd want someone else to see and, and and

  282. do something to it. We want vengeance.

  283. Jesus is no, no, no. Turn the other cheek.

  284. Literally offer them you. You struck my right.

  285. Here's my left. And then he says if someone

  286. takes your cloak, so think about your outer garment, your your

  287. hoodie, your jersey. So someone came and I was

  288. wearing a hoodie. They stole my hoodie.

  289. I shouldn't run and try to tackle them and get it back.

  290. I should be taking off my T-shirt and say hey, you forgot

  291. this. You should take this as well if

  292. people big from you. So the idea there is if

  293. someone's asking you for a loan and and they have, there's

  294. absolutely no premise that they could pay this back, you're

  295. like, I'm pretty sure I'm not getting this money back.

  296. Don't be like, no, this isn't a good financial choice for me.

  297. Say no, give them the money, give them the line.

  298. If someone steals, do not seek retribution.

  299. What? What's the point with all these

  300. examples? I don't know if they necessarily

  301. specific instruction. He's not saying that we should

  302. go and be completely cavalier with our money in every

  303. situation. I think what he's saying here is

  304. he, he's shocking us to see what kind of love this is in

  305. comparison to the love of the world meaning this.

  306. We pay no mind to the love that is coming inwards.

  307. The way that we view the world, our first attitude, our first

  308. mindset when we see the world, when, when we see other people

  309. as love, love, love, love. How can I bless you?

  310. How can I love you? Not OK What?

  311. What's in it for me? Not weighing up a cost benefit

  312. analysis. Is this gonna be worth my time

  313. and my head space? No love, Love, love, love and

  314. this is a love that shows itself in action.

  315. John season first John 318. He says let us not love and word

  316. and talk, but indeed and in truth loving and correction.

  317. So Jesus here is calling us to this outward focused love.

  318. It's not dependent on the love being reciprocal.

  319. It's not dependent on getting it back and return to the point

  320. that we would even love our enemies.

  321. And for some of you, I'm aware when I say that word enemy, love

  322. your enemy. For some of you, immediately

  323. names come to mind. Immediately you're like, yes,

  324. okay, I got a few people I can put in that category pretty

  325. comfortably for some, I guess for those people, if you, if,

  326. if, when I say enemy, those names are coming to mind.

  327. This instruction from Jesus, it takes on a much more real

  328. challenge because you've got faces, you've got situations,

  329. you've got hurt, you've got abuse.

  330. What you, I don't know what it looks like.

  331. And what I will say is a few things.

  332. When Jesus says love your enemies, to love does not equal

  333. to trust. You wanna make that clear?

  334. To love does not mean to trust. O, if you've if there has been

  335. abuse, if there has been harm, if there has been hurt, it does

  336. not mean that the relationship must be restored all the way

  337. that you're going. Yeah, come into my house, hang

  338. out with my kids, whatever it looks like.

  339. He's not saying that, but what he is.

  340. That trust is earned, but that love can be given.

  341. He's speaking here of a heart attitude of love.

  342. I do not wish the other person ill.

  343. I want to extend to them the love of Jesus Christ.

  344. And for others I feel thinking, I don't necessarily know if I

  345. have any enemies in the way that he's speaking about this.

  346. I don't think this lets us off the hook.

  347. In fact, they know I know that it doesn't for two reasons.

  348. Firstly, I will say enemies will come.

  349. Enemies will come, I said because of this, I think

  350. especially when he's using the word enemies here Jesus has in

  351. mind religious persecution. So if you think about the

  352. context, he he talked about the blessings and the woes last week

  353. in verse 22. He says blessed are you when

  354. people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and

  355. spoon your name as evil on account of the Son of man.

  356. I think especially what Jesus has in mind here is religious

  357. persecution. And in this context to these

  358. people, he's thinking of people who are opposing them because of

  359. their faith. And we're actually guaranteed in

  360. Scripture as a believer that will come.

  361. That policy is in Second Timothy 3 verse 12.

    2 Timothy 3:12

  362. All who desire to live a godly life and Jesus Christ will be

  363. persecuted. So if we want to follow Jesus,

  364. if we want to follow him with our lives, there will come a

  365. time where enemies, persecution, opposition come even just on

  366. account of our faith. And yet, there are many other

  367. times in our life where we will come against enemies.

  368. We'll come against opposition. Whether it comes through a

  369. family member or a friendship that has broken down, or just

  370. harm and hurt from the different interactions you have in life.

  371. Enemies will come. Opposition will come, but I'd

  372. also say this, this, this applies to all of us because I

  373. think what Jesus is giving us here is an extreme example to

  374. show how he is redefining love. This is a, this is a framework

  375. for how we should love our enemies.

  376. But as I said before, our friends, our spouses, our

  377. children, our coworkers, our fellow church members, it is an

  378. outward seeking that that is not waiting for love to come first.

  379. And so, so maybe right now there's different situations,

  380. even in this room, marriages where there is conflict in you

  381. and you're going, I'm not apologising for nothing until I

  382. get an apology first, until they realise what what they've done

  383. to me. I'm not, I'm not acting first in

  384. love until I feel love. I think I deserve to feel love

  385. in this marriage or in this friendship.

  386. I'm gonna wait for that. And then, and then we'll see

  387. what happens. Or there's a coworker you you've

  388. found out has been talking behind your back and you you've

  389. just signed. Until they apologise, I'm just

  390. going to completely ignore them. They walk past me at work, I'm

  391. going to look in the other way. Maybe maybe there's a friend

  392. that there's been a relationship breakdown and and you go I'm

  393. nothing is going to happen until they make that first step of

  394. resolution. Jesus is saying our heart

  395. posture and this should always be love, love, love, regardless

  396. of how much love comes back. And this is a hard task that

  397. he's calling us to because our sinful self wants vengeance.

  398. We want justice to be done. We feel like we need to receive

  399. love. Jesus is saying no love, love,

  400. love. And so if that's the kind of

  401. love we're called to, the question inevitably comes U, how

  402. on earth do you expect me to do that?

  403. How on earth do you expect me to live in that kind of way?

  404. On what basis, Billy, you don't understand my situation.

  405. You don't understand the hurt that has come my way.

  406. You don't understand the frustration that this person is

  407. to me. And even if you look at these

  408. different diagrams, you you go Billy, you notice that in the

  409. second one there there's nothing coming inwards except anger and

  410. enmity. Maybe you're in a marriage.

  411. It's feeling pretty 1 sided and a different relationship.

  412. You go on what basis of is any of this actually possible,

  413. actually realistic? And to which I would say to you

  414. simply, it's not. It's not if you just go.

  415. I'm gonna pull myself out by the boots.

  416. Bootstraps. Ohh.

  417. Yeah. That that that was challenging.

  418. OK, I'm gonna go out. I'm gonna try.

  419. Love, love, love. You could maintain it for a

  420. while. I think over time you would grow

  421. bitter, you would grow empty and frustrated in the different

  422. relationships that you're in. If you just say I'm just going

  423. to go try smash this out, I want to speak to that on what basis?

  424. How so? Firstly, we can love our enemies

  425. because we, as believers of Jesus Christ, know ultimately

  426. that vengeance belongs to the Lord.

  427. We know that we do not need to get even.

  428. We do not need our relationships to be completely equal.

  429. It is not our job to bring about justice on earth.

  430. Pulses and Romans 12 verse 19 Do not avenge yourselves, because

    Romans 12:19

  431. vengeance belongs to the Lord. Our job is to love and leave

  432. justice to the Lord and know ultimately every wrong will be

  433. made right. And that is not our job.

  434. But also, I just want to look at this as 35 and 36 and highlight

  435. a few things for us as we think about how are we to love this

  436. way. This 35 You see his love, your

  437. enemies do good and lend, expecting nothing in return, and

  438. your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most

  439. High. For He is kind to the ungrateful

  440. and the evil, being merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

  441. The basis for us to love in this way is in first understanding

  442. that we are recipients of this kind of love.

  443. The basis for us loving in this way is understanding that we are

  444. recipients of this kind of love. Look at the end of verse 35.

  445. Speaking about God, He says He is kind to the ungrateful and

  446. the evil. Well, who is that?

  447. That was us. We were the ungrateful.

  448. We were the evil. And he's actually pointing us

  449. here. Jesus is that we were first

  450. recipients if we put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

  451. We were first recipients of God's completely outward focused

  452. love. I mean, this is the most one

  453. sided act of love you could ever imagine.

  454. And, and we're actually on the the receiving side, we have

  455. first received the greatest act of love when Jesus Christ went

  456. to the cross to make a sacrifice for sin so that all who put

  457. their faith and trust in Jesus Christ will have their sins

  458. forgiven, wiped out clean simply by faith in Jesus Christ, in a

  459. right relationship with God. Paul puts it this way in Rome's

  460. fly verse 10. He says for a while we were

  461. enemies. We were reconciled to God by the

  462. death of his Son. We were enemies.

  463. God loved us. Now we are to do the same and

  464. that that's why he says in verse 35, when when we love this way,

  465. he says, your reward will be great and you will be sons of

  466. the most high. He's saying, hey, when we love

  467. like this, we show ourselves to be like our father.

  468. We're showing the family DN A we're showing that we are of God

  469. because we are loving like God. And so so why does the world,

  470. why does the world love the way they do?

  471. Why does the world need this love that's coming inwards?

  472. And I think the world loves the way that they do because we were

  473. designed to be loved. We were designed to know God's

  474. love, and the reality is, if we don't find it in God, we will

  475. look for it. In fact, we'll demand it from

  476. other people there. There is a gaping need, a gaping

  477. hole in our heart to know the love of God.

  478. We're either gonna look for it from God.

  479. We're gonna demand it from somewhere else.

  480. Edward Welch, who I quoted earlier, he he describes that

  481. that we are living as love tanks with a leak.

  482. So you imagine if I've got a plastic cup and, and I drill a

  483. hole in the bottom of the cup and then I fill it up with

  484. water. Yeah, it's gonna fill up.

  485. But overtime, it's just gonna be leaking out and leaking out and

  486. leaking out and, and, and after not very long, I'm gonna need to

  487. go and, and fill it up again. And he's saying when when we

  488. live our lives looking for what we should be looking for this

  489. way, when we look for it amongst other people, when we look for

  490. other people to give us the love that we need from God, we're

  491. like these love tanks with the leak.

  492. Yes, they give us this feeling of, of love and acceptance, but

  493. slowly it's going to leak out and leak out and leak out

  494. because it's it's not enough. And so we go looking for it

  495. again and again and again and we get upset when it's not coming

  496. in. Every relationship needs to give

  497. us something. We'll continue to look to be

  498. filled, but we'll never be full. And I just want you to

  499. understand this. Only when we know that our

  500. desire to be fully known and fully loved is meant in Jesus

  501. Christ can we begin to love as He teaches us to.

  502. Only when we are no, Only when we know this desire that we have

  503. is only met in God, will we stop looking horizontally for what

  504. can only be found vertically. We're going to stop looking at

  505. every relationship as a need to fill our leaky cup.

  506. And really what we're meant to do, I think, is to know truly

  507. and seek to know that we are loved by God and to then bind to

  508. that love comes down to us and we bend it and we extend it into

  509. every relationship that we have. And so we are not leaky cups,

  510. but we are, we are these these systems of water that are

  511. overflowing into every relationship that we have to

  512. love as we ought. We need to know God's love.

  513. It's as simple as that. But how?

  514. How can we know this love? How can we truly know the love

  515. of God? And I want you to turn with me

  516. to Ephesians. Ephesians is a couple of books

  517. after Luke and the New Testament.

  518. Ephesians chapter 3 and we're going to finish the this morning

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  519. because I want us to to think about as we come to a close, we

  520. thinking, OK, if we are to love as Jesus teaches us, we must

  521. first know and be filled and be satisfied by the love of God.

  522. What does that mean for us to know God's love?

  523. What does it mean for us to be satisfied in the end of chapter

  524. 3 of Ephesians? Paul praised this incredible

  525. prayer for the Ephesian church in the instance of this prayer,

  526. and I'll read this 17 he sang. His prayer is that Christ may

  527. dwell in your heart through faith, and that you being rooted

  528. and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all

  529. the Saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

  530. and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that

  531. you may be filled with all the fullness of God Ull uses 2 words

  532. here. He uses the word comprehend and

  533. he uses the word No. We probably use those words

  534. interchangeably, but they're different words.

  535. The word he uses therefore know that is an academic knowledge

  536. that is a I. I know this to be true because

  537. I've read it and I kind of understood it.

  538. But then he uses this word comprehend.

  539. I think a better word would be the word grasp.

  540. Now, this is a knowledge in our bones.

  541. So the common example, we use this for young adults this week.

  542. It's one thing to know that honey is sweet.

  543. I could do all the science. I could work out.

  544. Yes, OK, I've done the math. I've worked out the chemical

  545. makeup of honey. Honey is sweet, but it's a

  546. completely other thing, a different thing.

  547. If I gave you a teaspoon of honey and told you to taste it

  548. and you'd go, honey is sweet. I knew honey is sweet, but now I

  549. know honey is sweet. These are the two different

  550. types of knowing. Paul is praying for here that

  551. they would know academically, but they now would know the love

  552. of Jesus Christ. And it's going to tell us a few

  553. things. I think.

  554. Firstly, it's going to tell us that it's awfully easy for us as

  555. Christians to know about the love of God and yet at the same

  556. time not really know it. It's awfully easy for us to know

  557. about the love of God and yet not really know it.

  558. He's speaking to Christians here in Ephesus.

  559. He's already addressed that in the letter.

  560. These are people who love Jesus. They, they, they have accepted

  561. the gospel. But Paul saying here, there's

  562. more here for us. We know Jesus loves us, but

  563. often we don't really know at any saying it actually should be

  564. a life changing reality that shapes the way that we live and

  565. shapes the way that we love others.

  566. And secondly, I think this is showing us that this kind of

  567. knowledge, this tasting, this personal knowing is available to

  568. us. It's available to us because

  569. this is the essence of Paul's prayer.

  570. He's praying that they may know this kind of love.

  571. I I think we spend a lot of our lives not truly knowing the love

  572. of God. We know about it, but we don't

  573. know it. Oses it's available.

  574. I think that's the point of this prayer.

  575. And so as I close, I want to give you a few things to Mull on

  576. about what it looks like for us to meditate and know the love of

  577. God and then to go out and extend that to other people.

  578. What does it look like for us to strive to know God's love?

  579. First thing I'd encourage you to do is to meditate on God's love.

  580. And when I say meditate, I'm not talking about the, you know,

  581. Eastern meditation where you empty your mind of everything

  582. else. Actually, biblical meditation is

  583. filling your mind. It's filling your mind with with

  584. truth. 0 Meditate on God's love. So I'd say that's fine.

  585. Assam, I'd encourage you. Sam 103.

  586. Sit with Sam 103 with a pen and paper.

  587. Set aside maybe 15 minutes, thirty minutes, and ask basic

  588. questions. What does this sum tell me about

  589. the love of God? That tells me that it is

  590. steadfast. It tells me that it is from

  591. everlasting to everlasting, so it will never stop.

  592. It tells me that it is higher than the heavens are above the

  593. earth, so it is bigger than I can comprehend.

  594. What does this tell me about the love of God?

  595. And then preach that to yourself.

  596. What does this actually mean for me if this is true, that God

  597. loves me in this way? Think about applying this to

  598. different areas of your life. Sit with it, that it sit on your

  599. heart, and then respond. I'd encourage you come back to

  600. Ephesians chapter 3. Ask God that He may help you to

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  601. know His love. And this is not OK.

  602. I'm gonna do this one time and then I'm sorted.

  603. Actually in some 103 they say, you know, bless the Lord and

  604. forget not all his benefits. Which means, you know, we're

  605. very quick to forget these things.

  606. We need to remind ourselves everyday.

  607. And so I'd encourage you to build that practise into your

  608. spiritual life, of reminding yourself of what we often

  609. forget, which is that God loves us.

  610. And my period is that from that we would go out into our lives,

  611. not as leaky cups, but as overflowing systems of water,

  612. pouring love into those around us, loving our enemies, loving

  613. our spouses, loving our friends, loving our family as followers

  614. of Jesus as we ought to, bending this love out, displaying this

  615. love for us. O, that's my review.

  616. And it's, it's been such a challenge for me.

  617. We we will go through seasons in our life with us where love is

  618. easy, where it feels like love does not demand a lot from us.

  619. We feel like, you know, the love is more or less 5050.

  620. There are gonna be seasons in life where it's not like that

  621. and it's actually going to expose our real motives and

  622. love. Are we going to love the way

  623. that that Jesus calls us to love?

  624. Are we going to be outward focused in our relationships?

  625. So as we close, I might pray for us this prayer in Ephesians

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  626. chapter 3, and then I'll sit down.

  627. Let's pray. For this reason I bow my knees

  628. before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on

  629. earth is named, that according to the riches of His glory He

  630. may grant you to be strengthened with power through His Spirit

  631. and your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts

  632. through faith. That's you being rooted and

  633. grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all

  634. the Saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

  635. and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that

  636. you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

  637. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask,

  638. will think according to the power at work within us.

  639. To Him be glory and the church and in Christ Jesus throughout

  640. all generations, forever and ever.

  641. I mean.
