  1. She's excellent.

  2. I thought

  3. struggle with

  4. All right, Mission Vineyard family, make

  5. it back to your seats, please.

  6. >> Thank you.

  7. >> All right.

  8. Good morning. My name's Amanda McMullen.

  9. This is my first time doing

  10. announcements.

  11. Bear [applause] with me.

  12. Um, we're so glad to have you worshiping

  13. here with us today. And if you're new,

  14. you should have gotten one of these bags

  15. with a gift inside.

  16. It's a mana bag. And this gift is for

  17. you to give away and go bless somebody

  18. who might need some supplies.

  19. And then there's a connect card in here

  20. also that you can fill out with your

  21. information. And if you put your mailing

  22. address, you actually do get a gift from

  23. Pastor John, a $5 Starbucks gift card.

  24. So don't sleep on that. But anyway,

  25. okay. Events we have coming up next

  26. week, April 19th, 1:15 p.m. is our

  27. five-step prayer model training at the

  28. home of Ken and Arlene Oscar. You can

  29. to RSVP or you can find Ken and Arlene

  30. over here and let them know. And then

  31. May 2nd, we have Alpha Holy Spirit Day

  32. from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the home

  33. of Steve and Kathleen Smith. Learn about

  34. who the Holy Spirit is, what the Holy

  35. Spirit does, and how to be filled and

  36. baptized by the Holy Spirit. You can

  37. to RSVP.

  38. And then John has one more announcement.

  39. Do you want to do that now or after?

  40. Okay.

  41. Okay. And then now the it's time to

  42. give. So I missed we give out of an

  43. overflow of what God has already given

  44. to us. So it is a gift to give and we

  45. give with open hands and cheerful

  46. hearts. So whoever's doing the giving

  47. baskets can come up and pass those

  48. around

  49. and then we can pray. Father, everything

  50. in this room belongs to you. The earth

  51. is yours and everything in it. We hold

  52. these gifts with open hands as an act of

  53. worship. We trust that what is given

  54. today will be used faithfully for the

  55. work of your kingdom through Mission

  56. Vineyard. Bless the remainder of the

  57. service and may everything we do here

  58. today bring you glory. Thank you, Jesus.

  59. Amen.

  60. >> Thanks, Amanda.

  61. Give a cheer for Amanda McMullen.

  62. [applause]

  63. >> It's not easy to get up in front of

  64. people and order them around. And

  65. Amanda, you just do a great job. No,

  66. what I actually told Amanda was, I want

  67. you to to lead in this announcement time

  68. because when she greets people, and I

  69. don't know if she's ever greeted you

  70. before, she does a great job. Like, I

  71. just I feel welcomed. I feel like other

  72. people feel welcome when she greets

  73. people. So, thanks, Amanda. Woo! Woo!

  74. Awesome. Uh, my name is John. I'm the

  75. senior pastor here. It's an honor to be

  76. with you this morning. I do have another

  77. announcement.

  78. We are counting down, church, to our

  79. 15th anniversary as a church. We're

  80. counting down [applause]

  81. and we plan on celebrating. So, mark

  82. your calendars for July 12th. If you

  83. already booked that trip, cancel it.

  84. There's truth in sarcasm. Um July 12th,

  85. we would love for you to be here. We are

  86. going to party. Uh we're going to take a

  87. couple times to party. May 30th, we're

  88. going to party as well. We're just It's

  89. going to be a party time leading up to

  90. our 15th anniversary. And we've got So,

  91. we've got 14 weeks left. 13 weeks today,

  92. actually. 13 weeks left until our 15th

  93. anniversary. Now, one way that God led

  94. us into this celebration was giving us a

  95. year of transition last year, which put

  96. us on our knees. Have you ever been

  97. through a year of transition?

  98. Transition, quote unquote, is a year

  99. that really, really stunk.

  100. Yes. Yes. Well, I saw one hand. Good for

  101. you. And we just we lost a lot last year

  102. as a church. We lost a building. Uh we

  103. lost uh leaders that moved away. And it

  104. really put us on our knees in three

  105. different series of times of prayer. And

  106. through those times, God said, "Hey, I

  107. want you to get I want to give you a hub

  108. for your church. You guys have been

  109. active in planting churches for the last

  110. 15 years. I want to give you a hub for

  111. your community so your community can be

  112. healthy, but then to continue that

  113. planting work that I've called you to.

  114. And I want you I want to give you money

  115. for those church plants that are going

  116. to go out for the next years until 2035.

  117. We have a plan for 18 total church no 18

  118. churches to be planted by 2035 and we've

  119. already planted a lot. The others uh

  120. thing that he wanted to give money for

  121. was to bless our partners. So snack pack

  122. for kids. Uh we feed about 100 to 175

  123. kids every weekend at Rogers Academy. uh

  124. one hope for kids now 450 children have

  125. been blessed with I think it's forever

  126. homes uh up to they celebrated this past

  127. week uh inner varsity ministering on

  128. campuses all over the city and other

  129. partners that we have in the city he

  130. said I want to give you 150,000 for that

  131. and so um people have done some crazy

  132. things to participate in that so one

  133. family told me yeah we took some of the

  134. proceeds from the home we sold and we

  135. gave it to the church and went that's

  136. you're nuts. Why didn't you keep that

  137. for yourself and like towards your next

  138. home? They said, "No, this is what God

  139. asks us to do." Another family said,

  140. "You know, I we had plans for retirement

  141. and to do some certain things with

  142. retirement. Uh God asked us to lay those

  143. down and so we're going to give that to

  144. the church as well towards this vision."

  145. If that's you, there's a on our donate

  146. page online, there's a way to to give

  147. towards the 2026 vision of the church.

  148. I'd love to hear how God's speaking to

  149. you about this because he's we the

  150. church

  151. Um, God doesn't need your money and the

  152. church doesn't need your money. God

  153. gives us all that we need. We get to

  154. join in in gratitude for all that he's

  155. given to us. And uh, if God's calling

  156. you to join in with that, I'm excited

  157. for you. I know uh, God's called our

  158. leader and I to join in with that. And

  159. so, our budgets look differently this

  160. year. It's been interesting. Uh, but I

  161. want to pray for that vision. Would you

  162. take just a moment and pray for that

  163. vision? One of the ways that I know God

  164. is behind giving us our own home is when

  165. he makes our temporary home so difficult

  166. to live in.

  167. Over the last 14 years, almost 15 years,

  168. we've been in multiple different places.

  169. And each time we felt these growing

  170. pains and along with those growing

  171. pains, um I'll give you an example. When

  172. we were at Lionsfield Community Center,

  173. there were probably six or seven times

  174. when the host for the building just

  175. didn't show up. And so we had everybody

  176. coming to church that day and the

  177. building was locked and we went, "Oh, I

  178. wonder if God's asking if he's nudging

  179. us out." Uh here in the museum, we've

  180. had similar types of things where we've

  181. kind of had to fight to meet here this

  182. year. And so we we feel that sort of

  183. agreement with the Lord going, you know,

  184. I'm blowing on something else. I want

  185. you to have faith for another building.

  186. And so actually the lease with the DM is

  187. up at the end of the year. And so we're

  188. hoping that we'll have this $1.5 million

  189. this summer to be able to prepare for

  190. when this lease is up at the end of the

  191. year so that January 2027, we'll be in a

  192. new building of our own uh in a hub for

  193. all that God has done through us and in

  194. us. So Lord Jesus, we stop and we pray

  195. because you asked us just to pray. You

  196. didn't ask us to raise the money, to do

  197. a campaign, to do anything crazy. You

  198. just asked us to pray. And so we ask you

  199. together, Lord, as we hear the cricket

  200. stuck in the air, as we have battled

  201. sound and video issues,

  202. as you've called us to pray and ask, we

  203. ask God.

  204. We ask for money, Lord, that you would

  205. make a healthy church home, a building

  206. that would continue to be a hub for all

  207. the dynamic work that you've done in our

  208. church that you'll continue to do. We

  209. ask for the finances to plant nine more

  210. churches, Lord,

  211. over the next nine years.

  212. We ask for money to bless our church

  213. partners in the city.

  214. God, we don't ask in our own strength.

  215. In fact, we ask because we feel weak

  216. and we know you are strong in our

  217. weakness. So come, Holy Spirit, fill us

  218. up.

  219. Give us all that we need. We ask in

  220. Jesus name. Amen.

  221. >> My microphone is rubbing on my collar.

  222. That's got to be annoying.

  223. >> Hopefully it won't do that anymore.

  224. Thanks for paying attention. You're

  225. welcome for the distraction.

  226. Uh we're in a new series today. So,

  227. Lucas, would you play that video for our

  228. sermon series? Thanks.

  229. Hey,

  230. >> [music]

  231. [music]

  232. >> hey,

  233. hey.

  234. We're in a series called Community

  235. Growing Together in God's love. And what

  236. this series is really about is the

  237. abundance and overflow of God

  238. through his church to the community.

  239. Today, what was rained out was an event

  240. called Cichlovia where the church uh

  241. gets to participate because Broadway is

  242. shut down. on the YMCA takes over and

  243. they run a whole amazing beautiful

  244. program and the church gets to

  245. participate in that. It has been

  246. postponed till May 4th, but we looked

  247. forward to setting up a big prayer flag

  248. and asking people how can we pray for

  249. you, giving out waters, inviting people

  250. to church and uh doing all that together

  251. with our Spanish speaking community,

  252. Vignia San Antonio that meets on I 10.

  253. But if you don't remember anything else

  254. from today, I want you to know as we as

  255. we lean into what it means for our

  256. community to be a participant in God's

  257. abundance for the city, I want you to I

  258. want you to hear this. God's stuff,

  259. which what Jesus calls God's stuff is

  260. abundant life. God's stuff starts with a

  261. few real people with real lives who are

  262. willing to pray, get filled with the

  263. Holy Spirit, and go. So if you think of

  264. think just a moment what the city could

  265. look like if there was abundant life

  266. flowing from God,

  267. if there was abundance flowing from the

  268. city, if there was extra. Imagine that

  269. for just a second. And and as you do, I

  270. want you to re I want to read this title

  271. of this article that I saw.

  272. This is the opposite. I think the church

  273. is called to do the opposite of what

  274. this article says. This article from

  275. April 7th in the San Antonio Express

  276. News. San Antonio ranks among the worst

  277. Texas metros for future prosperity.

  278. That's what it looks like when God's

  279. abundance isn't flowing. Do you hear me?

  280. So, what would it look like if God's

  281. abundance was flowing? Church, I want to

  282. name the abundance of God

  283. will not come from from government.

  284. >> The abundance of God will not come from

  285. political party.

  286. The abundance of God comes from him

  287. >> through the local church who's filled

  288. with his Holy Spirit.

  289. I would love for next year in the name

  290. of Jesus for there to be another article

  291. that's written that says San Antonio

  292. ranks among the best Texas metros for

  293. future prosperity because the church was

  294. filled with the Holy Spirit and doing

  295. what the church is called to do in

  296. raising prosperity in the city. So I'll

  297. say this again. God's stuff, including

  298. God's abundant life, starts with a few

  299. real people with real lives who are

  300. willing to pray, get filled with the

  301. Holy Spirit, and go. And this has always

  302. been the case since the beginning of

  303. time.

  304. Abraham, remember Abraham, one of God's

  305. first friends on the earth after Adam

  306. and Eve,

  307. gave a God gave Abraham a covenant. And

  308. he said this, this is Genesis 12:1. He

    Genesis 12:1

  309. said, "Leave your native country." Many

  310. of you have done that. Your relatives.

  311. Many of you have done that. Your

  312. father's family. Many of you have done

  313. that. And go to the land that I'll show

  314. you, San Antonio. I'll make your city

  315. into a great and prosperous city. I will

  316. bless you and make you famous

  317. and you will be a blessing to others. I

  318. will bless those who bless you and curse

  319. those who treat you with contempt. And

  320. watch this last sentence. This is the

  321. call of God's people throughout history.

  322. All the families on earth will be

  323. blessed through you.

  324. I want all of San Antonio to be blessed

  325. by you.

  326. But it doesn't just stop with Abraham.

  327. Book after book, chapter after chapter

  328. through the scriptures, God keeps

  329. reminding his people even when they

  330. don't have their own space. Look at

  331. this. This is Jeremiah 29:6.

    Jeremiah 29:6

  332. He says, "Multiply."

  333. Can you imagine being homeless and God

  334. tells you to multiply?

  335. Multiply. This is what God is saying to

  336. his people. Multiply. Do not dwindle

  337. away and work for the peace and

  338. prosperity of the city where I sent you

  339. into exile. Pray to the Lord for it. For

  340. its welfare will determine your welfare.

  341. The church is not meant to seek its own

  342. welfare before it participates with God

  343. for the city's welfare. Do you hear me?

  344. We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit

  345. as real weak, distracted, burdened

  346. people, filled with the Holy Spirit and

  347. lining up for what God has to do in the

  348. city. And it's there that we'll find our

  349. prosperity.

  350. One of the things I know to be true more

  351. than ever is if you've ever felt weak in

  352. faith or distracted in faith or

  353. maybe you just felt like your faith is a

  354. little

  355. funky. Ever felt like your faith feels a

  356. little funky.

  357. Just me. Good. So,

  358. one of the ways I've always seen my

  359. faith grow is when I begin to share my

  360. faith.

  361. I often don't feel like my faith is good

  362. enough to share.

  363. But all of a sudden, if I call somebody

  364. or text somebody or if I see somebody

  365. and I go, "Hey, do you mind if I pray

  366. for you?" There was a time in my life

  367. when I was not feeling the prosperity of

  368. God and I was feeling really, really

  369. sad. And God came into my life and he

  370. told me, "I'm all you need to know." And

  371. my whole life changed from that moment.

  372. And he's been with me through the

  373. hardest of times and everything's

  374. changed because of that.

  375. All of the sudden, my faith changes and

  376. grows. All of a sudden, my whole sense

  377. of who God is and how I live with God

  378. and what I do with God, it all changes.

  379. So, I'm asking you, church, what it

  380. might look like for your life to look

  381. like that abundant life. I'm going to

  382. start by asking you to look at your

  383. sheets this morning. On your seat,

  384. there's a sheet. And if you don't have

  385. one, we've got extras lying around.

  386. If you don't have a pen, we can pass out

  387. some pens. We've got some pens on the

  388. Raise your hand if you want a pen. Is my

  389. mic still being funky? Are we okay?

  390. >> It's still funky. No, it's okay. Great.

  391. Need a pen over here? Great.

  392. Let's do a little evaluation. Church,

  393. what kind of local community do we have?

  394. You can circle what kind of community

  395. you have. Write in what kind of

  396. community you have. Let's do a little

  397. evaluation this morning. What kind of

  398. community do you have?

  399. What does it look like in your life?

  400. And as you're circling, identifying, oh,

  401. I do have family locally. That's

  402. interesting. Oh, I I actually have a

  403. friend or two. That's interesting. I go

  404. to school or there's a school in my

  405. community. I go to work or I have a work

  406. community. I have a neighborhood. I live

  407. somewhere

  408. and I live in that neighborhood. I have

  409. a church community. In fact, I'm here

  410. today with my church community. I live

  411. in a city. I have a city community. I'm

  412. part of a development that God has made.

  413. I'm involved in different organizations.

  414. I have relationships through those

  415. organizations.

  416. Now that you've identified those,

  417. dream for me for just a moment. Think of

  418. the people in your life that you would

  419. love to lock arms with you as God would

  420. move to bring prosperity into your

  421. community. Who do you love to pray with?

  422. Who do you lean on? Who do you text? Who

  423. do you depend on locally?

  424. Who do you want to help you pray for

  425. your community?

  426. The other question I might ask you to

  427. help answer this question is, who do you

  428. know that's praying for you?

  429. Or who would you want to start praying

  430. for you on a regular basis? They could

  431. hopefully they're in this room

  432. or if they're not in this room, maybe

  433. they're connected to Mission Vener in

  434. some way or maybe another church

  435. community.

  436. Who would you want to lock arms with?

  437. Who do you want to pray for you? Who is

  438. praying for you locally?

  439. I hope that some of you are sitting here

  440. this morning and going, "Man, I wish I

  441. had a couple of people that I knew were

  442. praying for me." And that gets answered

  443. today. I hope some of you already have

  444. that answered.

  445. Who do you want to help you pray for

  446. your community?

  447. Who do you want to lock arms with?

  448. And then that next question, who do you

  449. want to pray for you? Who do you want to

  450. pray for in your local community? So

  451. when you think about your local

  452. community, people that would be so much

  453. better off if they had the love of God

  454. in their lives.

  455. Who is that?

  456. If you could imagine yourself not

  457. being uncomfortable or weird around

  458. them, but just beginning to come to God

  459. and going, "God, I would really love

  460. these people to experience your love.

  461. They're in my community, and I I really

  462. want them to experience your

  463. prosperity."

  464. Who are three people in your life like

  465. that?

  466. in your family group locally, friends

  467. locally, school, work, neighborhood,

  468. church, city, local organizations. Who

  469. do you know would be better off if they

  470. experience the love of God on the

  471. regular basis?

  472. Now, I'm going to ask you to hold those

  473. names in tention prayerfully as we look

  474. together at Acts chapter 1 verse one.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  475. We're going to look at chapter one or

  476. verse of the uh chapter one of the book

  477. of Acts. The book of Acts is written by

  478. a guy named Luke. If you've ever heard

  479. of the Gospel of Luke, same guy. This is

  480. like chapter two or book two of uh

  481. Luke's writings. Luke's writing from the

  482. testimony of other people for the most

  483. part. You'll get to the middle of the

  484. book of Acts and all of a sudden Luke

  485. starts saying we and you go, "Oh, this

  486. is the point where Luke was depending on

  487. his own testimony." But as we look at

  488. the beginning of the book of Acts, he's

  489. actually he's he's writing from the

  490. testimony of other people, from his

  491. friends. But critically, I think for us,

  492. it comes from a time where we recognize

  493. that Jesus has died and he's risen and

  494. now the disciples are left with this

  495. question. So, what do we do now?

  496. What do we do now?

  497. I'll remind you, God's stuff, his

  498. abundant life starts with a few real

  499. people with real lives who are willing

  500. to pray, get filled with the Holy

  501. Spirit, and go. And this is a great

  502. example. So Luke begins. He says, "In my

  503. former book, Theophilles, Theophilus

  504. could be a guy. It could be just a way

  505. of saying, "My beloved,

  506. I wrote to all about that what Jesus

  507. began to do and teach until the day he

  508. was taken up to heaven after giving

  509. instructions through the Holy Spirit to

  510. the apostles he had chosen." So Luke is

  511. saying, "God chose through Jesus

  512. apostles,

  513. witnesses to all that Jesus said and

  514. did." And Luke had written about this.

  515. And now he's writing even more. He's

  516. talking about after his suffering, he

  517. presented himself to them and gave them

  518. many convincing proofs that he was

  519. alive. Have you if you've ever heard the

  520. name doubting Thomas? This was a

  521. situation that Luke is talking about

  522. right now where Thomas goes, "Jesus, you

  523. could be a ghost. You need to show me

  524. that you're not a ghost." And Jesus

  525. goes, "Look."

  526. and his actual wounds after Jesus rose

  527. from the dead, his actual wounds were

  528. still real before Thomas. That's what

  529. Luke is talking about here. So after his

  530. suffering, he presented himself and gave

  531. them many convincing proofs that he was

  532. alive. After he appeared to them over a

  533. period of 40 days,

  534. 40 days is used in a lot the scriptures.

  535. If you consider holy week was the week

  536. before Easter, now we are in the 40 days

  537. after Easter. That's what Luke is

  538. talking about.

  539. a period of 40 days he spoke about the

  540. kingdom of God, the rule and reign of

  541. God. The meaning that Jesus is now king

  542. because he has defeated death on the

  543. cross and raised from the dead.

  544. But Luke says on one occasion while he

  545. was eating with them he gave them this

  546. command do not leave Jerusalem but wait

  547. for the gift of that my father promised

  548. which you have heard me speak about. So,

  549. if you can imagine, you're with Jesus

  550. for 40 days. This has to be amazing. The

  551. risen from the dead Jesus. He can walk

  552. through walls. You're feeling really

  553. cool about yourself. You're like with

  554. the best, coolest person that ever

  555. existed. He can like cook fish and

  556. stuff, but all of a sudden appear. This

  557. is the best thing ever. It's like going

  558. to the moon, but landing or something.

  559. Thank God that Artemis is back.

  560. But the disciples were were feeling so

  561. cool and they're in these 40 days and

  562. they don't know when it's going to end.

  563. It could be that they believe that

  564. they're just with Jesus, the the walking

  565. through walls fun Jesus for the rest of

  566. their lives.

  567. And he goes, "Hey, don't leave

  568. Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my

  569. father promised, which you've heard me

  570. speak about over the last 40 days and

  571. over the last three years of its

  572. ministry as well." He said, 'For John

  573. baptized with water, but in a few days,

  574. you're going to be baptized with the

  575. Holy Spirit. So, all of a sudden, Jesus

  576. introduces this new way of living, the

  577. baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  578. Some of you have been baptized in water.

  579. Some of you have not been or have been

  580. baptized in the spirit, where the Holy

  581. Spirit comes on you in power and

  582. empowers you for the mission of God.

  583. empowers you for the mission of God and

  584. gives you the gifts of the spirit to do

  585. the mission of God to join in with what

  586. the church is doing but also gives you

  587. the character of the spirit love and joy

  588. and peace and patience and kindness

  589. goodness and faithfulness and gentleness

  590. and self-control and even more

  591. so he says don't leave Jerusalem wait

  592. for the Holy Spirit John baptized this

  593. way but in just a few days you're going

  594. to be baptized with the Holy Spirit and

  595. then they gather around him and they

  596. asked an interesting question. Jesus

  597. told them, "Hey, I'm going to give you

  598. the Holy Spirit." And you can imagine,

  599. "Wait a second. Are you leaving?

  600. Jesus, are you are you giving? I thought

  601. you were taking on responsibility.

  602. You're the one that's risen from the

  603. dead. You You're the one that can walk

  604. through walls and multiply food and

  605. stuff. Wait for the Holy Spirit," he

  606. says.

  607. And you can imagine the disciples

  608. getting a little nervous like, "Whoa,

  609. whoa, whoa. I don't know if I can handle

  610. this. It's about the same feeling that

  611. I'm sure you have felt when God calls

  612. you to share about Jesus to a friend.

  613. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second. I

  614. don't want to ruin the status quo here.

  615. This is going to be uncomfortable for

  616. me. I don't know if I want to live for

  617. you that way. Th this this could be bad.

  618. And so instead of asking what it might

  619. mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit

  620. and to take on their role in the kingdom

  621. of God that he was just talking about,

  622. they ask him what I think all of us ask

  623. all the time. Hey, when are you going to

  624. take care of things around here?

  625. When are you going to finish things?

  626. Specifically, Lord, are you at this time

  627. going to restore the kingdom of Israel?

  628. That for them means we don't have to be

  629. persecuted anymore for our faith.

  630. Talking about you is not going to be

  631. dangerous.

  632. The government is going to take care of

  633. things. Do you hear me?

  634. So many times around the political

  635. seasons of our country, I see Christians

  636. get nervous

  637. for all kinds of reasons. But one of the

  638. ways that Christians get nervous is in

  639. the expectation that for some reason

  640. they need God to raise up a new king

  641. to do God's kingdom work instead of

  642. taking that responsibility on

  643. themselves.

  644. Whether it's social justice work or

  645. morality work,

  646. there's an anxiety that starts to build.

  647. Wait a second, Jesus. I don't know if I

  648. can take this on. It's going to be

  649. really uncomfortable for me.

  650. And so instead of saying, Lord, fill me

  651. with your Holy Spirit and give me the

  652. small practical things to do that'll

  653. bring prosperity to this city, we go,

  654. "Oh yeah, God, I'm going to vote for

  655. that person so that they can do it."

  656. The disciples do it right here.

  657. Lord, are you going to restore the

  658. kingdom of Israel? And he said to them,

  659. it's none of your business.

  660. It's not for you to know the times and

  661. dates the Father has set to take his

  662. older authority and change things around

  663. here.

  664. But this is your business. You will

  665. receive power when the Holy Spirit comes

  666. on you. And what that he gives him a

  667. task. This isn't about them doing the

  668. work. This is about you doing the work.

  669. The Holy Spirit in you doing the work.

  670. And what is the work? You will be my

  671. witnesses.

  672. I love this part of Jesus that he

  673. doesn't say you will take care of

  674. poverty.

  675. You will take care of all of injustice.

  676. You will take care of No, he doesn't say

  677. any of that. He says, "You will be my

  678. witnesses.

  679. You will stop all immorality." No, he

  680. doesn't say that.

  681. You will be my witnesses.

  682. You'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem. So

  683. in their hometown in Judea, sort of the

  684. area around there and Samaria, the

  685. outskirts and to the ends of the earth.

  686. After he said this, you can imagine they

  687. had more questions and he bails.

  688. Just like that, he was taken up before

  689. their very eyes and a cloud hid them

  690. from their sight and they were looking

  691. intently.

  692. Intently is not a big enough word. I say

  693. I think desperately

  694. up in the sky as he was going when

  695. suddenly two men dressed in white stood

  696. beside them and they said, "Men of

  697. Galilee, why do you stand here looking

  698. into the sky?

  699. Didn't he give you a charge to go and

  700. wait and pray? Didn't he tell you that

  701. you didn't have to do the big work? All

  702. you had to do was talk about him.

  703. He'll come back the same way you see him

  704. going into heaven. And then the apostles

  705. got it. They returned to Jerusalem from

  706. the Mount of Olives about a day's walk.

  707. And when they arrived, they went

  708. upstairs to the room and they followed

  709. Jesus's orders.

  710. The 11 disciples were there because

  711. Judas had just ended his own life in

  712. desperation, realizing what he had done

  713. to Jesus.

  714. So in verse 14, they all joined together

  715. constantly in prayer along with all the

  716. women, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and

  717. with all of Jesus's brothers. And then

  718. Peter

  719. realizing that the work that had been

  720. put on their shoulders for the sake of

  721. the Holy Spirit's work of them, he said,

  722. "You know guys, Judas is gone."

  723. The scripture had to be fulfilled in

  724. which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago

  725. through David concerning Jesus. Judas's

  726. stuff was evil, but it's going to be

  727. wrapped up in God's plan. It was already

  728. talked about.

  729. Verse 17, he was one of our number and

  730. shared in our ministry. Therefore, it's

  731. necessary for us to choose the men, one

  732. of the men who had been with us the

  733. whole time the Lord Jesus was living

  734. among us from the beginning of John's

  735. baptism to the where he was taken up

  736. from us. One of these will become

  737. witness with us to his resurrection.

  738. And so the chapter continues and they

  739. decide they each say you know what these

  740. two guys they were with us since John

  741. since Jesus since John the Baptist

  742. baptized Jesus until Jesus was raised

  743. from the dead. These guys have been with

  744. us but these two are special to us.

  745. Mathias is one of them

  746. and Joseph Barabus Jesus. And they

  747. prayed you know everybody's heart. show

  748. us which of these two you've chosen to

  749. take over this ministry of being a

  750. witness to the world, which Judas left.

  751. And then they rolled dice and they said,

  752. "Yep, you're up."

  753. Wait a second.

  754. Wait a second. How many of you have ever

  755. felt like one, you weren't qualified,

  756. and two, you weren't quite sure that God

  757. was calling you to do something?

  758. Yeah. Thanks for some of your honest

  759. hands.

  760. Not qualified. You've been through it.

  761. Your life's too sinful. You don't have

  762. the capacity. Your little kids are too

  763. distracting. You're too bad of a parent.

  764. Your track record of addiction is just

  765. too much, too distracting.

  766. You still your language is still pretty

  767. horrible.

  768. There's no way that God could fill me

  769. with his Holy Spirit and invite me into

  770. his work. I have to imagine that's how

  771. Matias and Bart and Joseph were

  772. thinking.

  773. All they were were witnesses of Jesus

  774. for three years. They weren't scholars.

  775. They maybe had never read read a book.

  776. Certainly never written one. Who knows

  777. how many people they actually witnessed

  778. to themselves.

  779. And all of the sudden they go, "Hey, you

  780. guys come over here." You can imagine.

  781. Yeah. Oh, this is great. Yeah, this is

  782. great. Yeah. Um uh you're going to be

  783. martyed with us

  784. in really difficult ways. History will

  785. know that you were martyed and and

  786. you're going to die. What? Yeah. We're

  787. going to roll dice to see which one of

  788. you is going to go.

  789. Uh I'm not qualified.

  790. Not qualified. I don't I don't I don't I

  791. don't know if I want to. Um

  792. Matias, you're up. And you see Joseph

  793. goes yes.

  794. I wonder if you can see yourself in that

  795. same room.

  796. I'm sure even this sheet was a little

  797. distracting and a little intimidating.

  798. Me, Jesus, involved in the prosperity of

  799. my city.

  800. Me, God, praying for what could go on.

  801. Me, God,

  802. praying with praying with people. God, I

  803. I've never said a prayer out loud in my

  804. life.

  805. me. God, you want you want me to pray

  806. for other people?

  807. Could you for just one moment, please?

  808. There's one last question on that sheet.

  809. It says, "Describe your dream outcome.

  810. If the Holy Spirit did empower you,

  811. dream with me for just a moment. If it

  812. wasn't about you, if you let go of your

  813. right to the way you were perceived,

  814. what if it wasn't about your history or

  815. your ability?

  816. What if it was just about the Holy

  817. Spirit filling you?

  818. What's your dream outcome

  819. of what God could do

  820. through you, in you?

  821. Some of us want so badly for the angels

  822. to come down and say, "You're up and

  823. it's going to be great."

  824. When really, it's Jesus going, "Hey, I

  825. want you to wait and pray for a while."

  826. Then the Holy Spirit's going to fill

  827. you. Some of your friends are going to

  828. roll dice and call your name out

  829. and you're just going to go.

  830. And all of a sudden, we have St. Matias.

  831. I hope that Mission Vineyard is one

  832. place in your life

  833. where the world just turns upside down

  834. for a moment because I know what some of

  835. you have come into this room with. So

  836. many feelings of God, I can't do this.

  837. So many feelings of insecurity.

  838. So many worries and fears about sharing

  839. that insecurity to anybody.

  840. so many fears of being a burden.

  841. And God says, "I'm going to fill you

  842. with my Holy Spirit.

  843. Your brothers and sisters are going to

  844. come around you and you're up and the

  845. world's going to be better for it."

  846. The world will always value the size of

  847. the crowd or the power of the person or

  848. the influence. The world will always

  849. value that.

  850. But Jesus values how filled and sent and

  851. obedient

  852. people actually are.

  853. He doesn't need a crowd.

  854. He needs you,

  855. just you, just as you are to come to him

  856. and go, "God, use me.

  857. Use me."

  858. I have been journeying with uh our

  859. sister church in Mendoza for a long

  860. time. The pastors there, Mark and

  861. Karina, sold everything they had in

  862. Tennessee and they moved to Mendoza

  863. and started a church.

  864. That same month, one of their daughters

  865. said, "Hey, you're going to have your

  866. first grandchild."

  867. and they still left

  868. in the simple obedience that being

  869. filled with the Holy Spirit would change

  870. the lives of people in the city of

  871. Mendoza, Argentina

  872. for the last 10 years. They've been

  873. there and not one person's been

  874. baptized.

  875. Now, let me tell you, as a pastor,

  876. baptisms is like our simple but holy way

  877. of feeling like we're doing an okay job

  878. if someone's been baptized because we're

  879. actually following what Jesus said. Go

  880. out into the world, baptize people in

  881. the name of Jesus. It's like one simple

  882. practical thing that Jesus said. And so,

  883. if we don't do that as pastors, we kind

  884. of feel like we're broken.

  885. And so for 10 years, Mark and Karina

  886. have been faithfully

  887. witnessing who Jesus is to a community

  888. of about 300 musicians in the Mendoza

  889. area, caring for them through COVID,

  890. loving on them, providing ways for them

  891. to have all kinds of prosperity even

  892. though all the clubs were shut down

  893. during COVID, feeding them. Homeless

  894. people come to their front door and they

  895. have a whole rack that they've set up in

  896. their inside doorway to just give simple

  897. food to people who just show up.

  898. Homeless people have found out this is

  899. the place where I can be safe and

  900. receive just enough for what I need.

  901. They've cried with people. They've done

  902. a couple marriages.

  903. But it was just a couple of weeks ago. I

  904. want to show you what happened. Lucas,

  905. would you play this video?

  906. >> [music and singing]

  907. >> I see.

  908. I got to see.

  909. for 10 years they have journeyied with

  910. 12 faithful people. I'm telling you

  911. faithfully week after week, month after

  912. month, year after year. And the Holy

  913. Spirit just landed and boom, 10 people

  914. baptized in one week.

  915. >> Awesome.

  916. >> The Holy Spirit is our prerequisite for

  917. abundance. If we want to see abundance

  918. in our lives and abundance in our city,

  919. prosperity in our lives, prosperity in

  920. our city, the Holy Spirit is not the

  921. cherry on top of all that we're doing.

  922. the Holy Spirit. Being baptized in the

  923. Holy Spirit, being filled with the Holy

  924. Spirit is the prerequisite for all of

  925. this.

  926. >> Without him, we are only going to be

  927. limited by our good intentions, and

  928. they're just not good enough. The Holy

  929. Spirit wants to fill us just as we are,

  930. overwhelmed and overburdened, bad

  931. backgrounds, and bad practices.

  932. And he wants to fill us and say, "Go."

  933. Yeah.

  934. >> He wants to fill our lives and send us

  935. out and go and just be a witness to who

  936. he is. Would you stand with me, please?

  937. Prayer team, I'm going to ask you to do

  938. something a little bit differently this

  939. morning. Jan, I know you've got some

  940. words you want to share,

  941. but prayer team, I'm going to ask you to

  942. come right up front

  943. and I'm going to move that. Stephen,

  944. would you help me remove this front row,

  945. please?

  946. Today is a day we want you to be filled

  947. with the Holy Spirit, baptized by the

  948. Holy Spirit. And we're going to give you

  949. an opportunity to do that. I'm going to

  950. ask the prayer teams to pray over you in

  951. an intentional way to be prayed for and

  952. blessed and be filled with the Holy

  953. Spirit. But there was a whole team

  954. praying for you this morning. And as

  955. they prayed, they had some other words

  956. they wanted to make sure they shared

  957. with you so that God got your attention

  958. because sometimes we're just scared of

  959. getting prayer. So hopefully this will

  960. push you over the line.

  961. >> Okay. If you have stiffness in your

  962. right hip, God wants to heal you today.

  963. If you have leg cramps from circulation

  964. issues, please come for prayer. Another

  965. word is count on God's faithfulness in

  966. the midst of your difficulties.

  967. And if you need financial breakthrough,

  968. come let us pray for you.

  969. >> So if you have any of those requests or

  970. you just want to be filled with the Holy

  971. Spirit, you recognize God has more to do

  972. in your life. Stephen, can we can you

  973. help me with this row as well? and you

  974. realize that God has more for you, but

  975. you just feel too intimidated. You, as

  976. you saw that sheet, there's some of you

  977. that went, I know that God has more for

  978. me. I know he wants to fill me. I wants

  979. to do He wants to do something in my

  980. life. I just don't feel strong enough. I

  981. feel too weak. I feel too overwhelmed,

  982. too overburdened.

  983. There's not enough time in the day. I'm

  984. too insecure.

  985. Just come and be filled by the Holy

  986. Spirit. Let him baptize you and send

  987. you. Simple, wonderful people.

  988. Come and receive prayer.

  989. The worship team's going to lead through

  990. one last song. I'll come back for that

  991. and bless you to go. But take this time

  992. and come and receive prayer.
