  1. Good morning, Mission Vineyard.

  2. It's great to see you here today. If

  3. you'll make your way back to your seats,

  4. my name is Kate, and I have the joy of

  5. welcoming you to church this morning.

  6. So, we are so glad that you're here.

  7. Thank you for worshiping with us.

  8. Whether you're here u with us at the

  9. museum or you're online, welcome. We are

  10. so glad that you're here and we hope

  11. that you feel welcomed. um but also that

  12. you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit

  13. and Jesus because he's here with us. And

  14. so as we move through our service, I

  15. just have a few announcements, but first

  16. and foremost, if you are a new face with

  17. us, we are so glad that you're visiting

  18. and that you're a guest. And please be

  19. sure that you take a white bag. I see

  20. one in the back over there. So, they

  21. grabbed one. Um there's a white welcome

  22. bag. And then um in that bag is

  23. information about our church,

  24. information about small groups that meet

  25. weekly um throughout the the week. And

  26. then there's also a connect card. And so

  27. if you'll pull that connect card out if

  28. you haven't yet filled one out already,

  29. you can also fill it out online at

  30. connect.missionyard.org.

  31. We would love to um have as much

  32. information as you're willing to share

  33. with us. We have a weekly church email

  34. that goes out to keep you informed in

  35. the life of the church, events and small

  36. groups and all things happening. So, if

  37. you add your email address, we will

  38. subscribe you to our email, your

  39. physical mailing address. Our pastor who

  40. is on vacation and back soon will send

  41. you a note in the mail, a note of thanks

  42. with a gift certificate um uh to take

  43. coffee or have coffee on us. So, please,

  44. if you're willing to share that um

  45. physical mailing address, we would love

  46. to have that as well. You can drop that

  47. card in the giving baskets that'll be

  48. passed throughout the service. You can

  49. also leave it on the back table as well.

  50. Also, um, one of the most important

  51. things in

  52. Sorry, that looked like it was about to

  53. fall. One of the most important things

  54. in the bag is something we call a mana

  55. bag. And a mana bag is something that is

  56. our gift to you to give away to those

  57. that you may encounter throughout the

  58. week who are in need. And so in there,

  59. some practical items like a water

  60. bottle, some crackers, some snacks, some

  61. Kleenex. So, please be sure that you

  62. take one. And this is also open to

  63. anyone um at Mission Vineyard to take

  64. one on their way out as well. And

  65. Stephen reminded me that we are entering

  66. into some really hot days coming up in

  67. San Antonio. So let us pray for those

  68. who um might be in need. And please on

  69. behalf of Mission Vineyard, take one of

  70. these mana bags um and at least we can

  71. bless our neighbors um with some water

  72. as well. Also, a couple of announcements

  73. that I wanted to share with you. one

  74. being um in September, Alpha is starting

  75. up and that date is September 9th.

  76. That's going to meet every Wednesday uh

  77. during the fall and Alpha is an

  78. incredible international church-based

  79. course um that meets weekly. We are

  80. partnering with several churches. First

  81. Presbyterian Church will be hosting

  82. Alpha for us Wednesdays 6 to 8 starting

  83. on September 9th. It's a great place to

  84. explore the Christian faith to ask

  85. questions and learn what all this is

  86. about Jesus, right? And so it's it's a

  87. safe space. So if you haven't attended

  88. Alpha or if you have a friend or a

  89. neighbor who is curious or asking

  90. questions, Alpha is an incredible place

  91. to do that. And um there's a meal that's

  92. included 6 to 8 Wednesdays. So we invite

  93. you to save that date starting September

  94. 9th. And then September 12th, Saturday,

  95. is our next um men's breakfast. And I

  96. hear that it's back and better than

  97. ever. So that's September 12th, 8:30 to

  98. 10:30. Todd's giving us a thumbs up in

  99. the back. They're meeting at the Whitigs

  100. building, which is just down Broadway.

  101. And we'll send out that information in

  102. future emails. You can also see Todd for

  103. that information. Um, so save those two

  104. dates, September 9th for Alpha and

  105. September 12th for the men's breakfast.

  106. And then I am going to move into a time

  107. of prayer over our giving and ask those

  108. that are giving our passing our offering

  109. baskets if you'll please come forward.

  110. So Lord Jesus, we bless you today. We

  111. worship you today um with our words um

  112. and with our finances, with our tithes

  113. and with our presence, Lord Jesus. And

  114. so would you bless the the gifts and

  115. every giver today, Father, that you

  116. would bless their hearts, that you would

  117. multiply their provisions, Lord. And we

  118. know that you love a cheerful giver. And

  119. so I pray for each and every person in

  120. this room, Lord, that your Holy Spirit

  121. would come upon them. Um that your

  122. presence would fill this place and that

  123. your words um through our sermon today

  124. would just touch each one of our hearts.

  125. So, thank you, Jesus, for all that

  126. you've given us, for all that you've

  127. created, and we bless you today with our

  128. finances and with our gifts in the name

  129. of Jesus. Amen.

  130. >> So, the weekly church email had an

  131. incorrect date. So, Wednesday, September

  132. 10th is alpha. So, if you'll save that.

  133. Thanks. Thanks, Arley.

  134. pray for Marcela as she comes up.

  135. So Lord, thank you for Marcella, Jesus,

  136. for her heart, for her presence, for the

  137. words that um you're going to speak to

  138. over uh to us today, Lord Jesus. I pray

  139. that you would give her um faith, that

  140. you'd give her wisdom, Lord Jesus, and

  141. just the confidence to share um how you

  142. have spoken to her, Lord Jesus. So thank

  143. you for her and your presence. In the

  144. name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

  145. >> Hello. Good morning.

  146. >> I am so nervous to be up here. Uh Pastor

  147. John has invited me multiple times um to

  148. share and for one reason reason or

  149. another um those dates haven't worked.

  150. And if I'm being honest, every time I

  151. was asked and I couldn't be here, I was

  152. relieved. I was like, "Okay, I have the

  153. perfect excuse. Family's coming over. I

  154. can't I can't." Um, and part of it is

  155. because the perfectionist inside of me

  156. uh doesn't want to be vulnerable and

  157. have to speak in public with an accent

  158. knowing that I'll be butchering a couple

  159. words. I think I just butchered

  160. butchering, by the way. Um, and we'll

  161. have to pretend I did not hear myself uh

  162. saying something wrong and have to move

  163. on for the sake of the sermon. But this

  164. isn't about me. This is just about God,

  165. what God is doing and has been doing in

  166. my life, in our marriage. So, I'm just

  167. going to share a little bit of of that.

  168. Um, anyways, this time Pastor John gave

  169. me a lot of options. So, what I did was

  170. just to simply pick the latest date. Um,

  171. little did I know this would mean to

  172. preach after Randall. Uh, who wants to

  173. preach after him? He has a PhD, years of

  174. experience. So, I was like, "No, I don't

  175. want to preach after him." But here I

  176. am. Um, I did go to seminary though. I

  177. spent four years at a Baptist seminary.

  178. Um, and you know how people are called

  179. to do ministry and then they go to

  180. seminary, they they have this moment

  181. when God is calling them or it's just

  182. like a pivoted moment and then they go,

  183. I didn't I didn't have that. Um,

  184. I was or probably still am argumentative

  185. enough to put myself through seminary

  186. just to prove my point with facts and

  187. logic. That's what I went to seminary. I

  188. didn't I didn't go because God called me

  189. to do ministry. Um I went to law school,

  190. so no surprise there, right? Um but

  191. what's funny is like the more I studied,

  192. the more I learned like I was like I'm

  193. not going to convince anyone. Like I'm

  194. not the Holy Spirit. Like

  195. >> it's just I'm just going to keep going,

  196. try to persevere as a Christian and then

  197. we'll see. And a lot of the people I

  198. wanted to um kind of convert or convince

  199. was my own family. Like my mom's side of

  200. the family were all Christians, but on

  201. my dad's side, like a lot of them don't

  202. don't believe. They're very like

  203. successful, career oriented. So I grew

  204. up going to church and I'll have

  205. criticism from them. So I always wanted

  206. to have something good to come back at

  207. them and be like, "Huh, I said that

  208. like, you know, but that didn't happen.

  209. when I went to seminary, I was like, I'm

  210. just going to pray for y'all. So,

  211. all that to say, um I am glad that

  212. despite having to preach after someone

  213. so knowledgeable like Randall, um Pastor

  214. John through to us or at least to me, a

  215. live servant by adding the word

  216. testimony to this series of sermons

  217. because I can do that. I can definitely

  218. share a little bit of who I am and what

  219. God has done in my life and and what is

  220. he doing right now. So I'm going to read

  221. real quick the two verses we'll be

  222. discussing this morning.

  223. So it's um Psalm 23 5 and 6 verses 5

  224. verse 5 says you prepare a table before

  225. me in the presence of my enemies. You

  226. anoint my head with oil. My cup

  227. overflows.

  228. Verse six, surely goodness and mercy

  229. shall follow me all days of my life, and

  230. I shall dwell in the house of the Lord

  231. forever. My husband was like, "So, you

  232. going to preach like one verse?" And I

  233. was like, "No, it's two. I read the

  234. text. It's two." And he was like, "But I

  235. think Randall talked about I was like,

  236. "Well, I don't have time this morning to

  237. redo this thing." So, I double check and

  238. and Pastor John said uh verses five and

  239. six. So, I think Randall did mention a

  240. little bit of verse five, but I'm going

  241. to go back to that, but that's okay.

  242. Okay. So, it starts saying, "You prepare

  243. a table before me in the presence of my

  244. enemies." Uh it's David essentially

  245. saying, "God doesn't wait until the war

  246. is over to show up. He cooks dinner in

  247. the middle of it. God doesn't wait for

  248. you to get that result being v negative

  249. or positive depending on what your

  250. situation is. Um he does not wait for

  251. you to overcome anxiety, depression,

  252. pay those bills, get a job or that

  253. promotion. He is ready to be with you

  254. right in the middle of it all. Um for

  255. those who don't know me, I am from El

  256. Salvador. Almost all my family is still

  257. there. Um, I moved here in 2019.

  258. Uh, Robert and I, Robert is back there.

  259. Uh, got married in December of of the

  260. same year, 2019. Um, and we always knew

  261. we wanted a family. And I'm going to be

  262. reading a lot because I don't want to

  263. get emotional and I don't want to like

  264. lose track of what I'm saying and start

  265. saying weird things, okay? So, just bear

  266. with me. I'm watching my paper a lot.

  267. Um, so we always knew we wanted a

  268. family. Uh, we never doubt each other's

  269. desire to become parents. Um, whenever

  270. what God was ready to bless us with a

  271. child,

  272. Robert uh has always been open to the

  273. idea of adopting a kid. Uh, more than

  274. open, I feel like he was called to do

  275. that. Uh, he had no doubts he will

  276. blindly jump into adopting a child. Like

  277. that that's my husband. That that's his

  278. heart and his faith. Me on the other

  279. hand, the first time he said I was like,

  280. "No, like not even I wouldn't even

  281. discuss this thing with you. No, no, no,

  282. no. I am Latina. We take care of each

  283. other. Like it adoption is something

  284. that we see as if someone's missing,

  285. I'll take care of my niece, my nephew,

  286. like a grandkid. So, so we do adopt

  287. kids, but it's just completely different

  288. in the way we see it here. So, I was

  289. like, "No, this this idea of me taking

  290. care of a kid that it it's just too

  291. foreign to me, right? like you're

  292. telling me I'm going to get a kid that I

  293. don't know mom and dad and the situation

  294. and it's just no blood. So many things

  295. went through my head. I I could spend

  296. like an entire hour sharing just all the

  297. thoughts that went into my head when he

  298. was like no I'm really and I was like no

  299. I'm not. So we we closed that door at

  300. the very beginning of well we closed

  301. that door at the very beginning of our

  302. marriage. Um, time passed and, uh, we

  303. realized we were not conceiving.

  304. And long story short, uh, we got

  305. diagnosed with unexplained infertility.

  306. Revealing, huh? Like, I was like, great,

  307. I know what's going on then. I know what

  308. to do now. It's like, it's all good, but

  309. it's just not happening. Awesome.

  310. Um but God as my good shepherd has been

  311. preparing this table right in the middle

  312. of my enemies

  313. right here in my uncertainty.

  314. Uh to understand this verse uh we need

  315. to see like this table right in

  316. shephering culture it was a place uh the

  317. shepherd prepared ahead of time before

  318. the sheep ever arrived uh the shepherd

  319. would make a couple of trips to that

  320. area which is just a flat plateau uh for

  321. pasture.

  322. God, our good shepherd is going ahead of

  323. us into that job interview, into your

  324. upcoming surgery, upcoming court date,

  325. next payment due, that uncomfortable

  326. conversation, conversation you need to

  327. have with your child, your spouse. He is

  328. ahead of you into your next season of

  329. life.

  330. God is going ahead and preparing the

  331. very best in the face of the very worst.

  332. Uh he's not scared off by your enemies.

  333. He sets the table while they watch.

  334. For us, this table God was preparing was

  335. through foster care. Our church partners

  336. with One Hope. I think we have like the

  337. little uh what are those called?

  338. I don't have the word. I not even in

  339. English or Spanish, but it's there in

  340. the banner. Isn't it a banner? Yeah, in

  341. the banner. It's right there. We partner

  342. with One Hope. Um, if you have never

  343. taken the time to look into uh that,

  344. please do. Uh, we have been and are so

  345. so blessed by their ministry. Um, One

  346. Hope is the agency through which we got

  347. licensed to foster and and foster to

  348. adopt. We have other families here

  349. actually at Mission Vineyard that are

  350. licensed to babysit like Josephina, the

  351. Torios. Actually, they have both um help

  352. us babysit our little kid. Um and they

  353. have other ways for you to get involved.

  354. Like there's people praying for us,

  355. sending us emails with like words of

  356. encouragement. So, there's so many ways

  357. uh to place those currently fostering

  358. children or fostering to adopt a child.

  359. So, just take a look at One Hope. We're

  360. already partnering um with them. So, for

  361. us, uh, God was preparing us to become

  362. foster parents. We got licensed and had

  363. a placement last year. We had a

  364. 2-year-old boy for a little over a

  365. month. And then we have a 5-year-old in

  366. January for less than a week. So, we've

  367. we've had two placements before the kid

  368. we have now. And truth to be told, when

  369. that happened, I was like, "God, what do

  370. you want from me?" like here I am

  371. keeping up with this license and we can

  372. even have a long placement to serve you

  373. because the first was like a month and

  374. the other one like a week. So I'm like,

  375. "Okay, this isn't work." Okay. And by

  376. the way, I still want to have biological

  377. skin, right? Like I want to be a a biom.

  378. So I'm just going through this all. Um

  379. so I was like, "God, do you still hear

  380. the prayer or should I just keep it to

  381. myself now?" Like there were times that

  382. I was like,

  383. "You've heard my prayer, right? Should I

  384. keep repeating this on and on? Should I

  385. just

  386. You've been there." Uh but through all

  387. the pain you get exposed while doing

  388. foster care and just some darkness you

  389. never knew is there in the world and

  390. through all the up and downs that

  391. struggling with infertility has brought

  392. to my life. My God, my good shepherd has

  393. set a table and I have gotten a stronger

  394. marriage, a stronger faith, God presence

  395. in my heart despite the doubts, the

  396. fear, the tears, the unknown, the

  397. unresolved.

  398. The waiting can be so heavy in our

  399. hearts. But this is what makes us makes

  400. us Christians, right? Not that we won't

  401. suffer like the rest of the world, but

  402. that we are not alone through that. We

  403. have a God that provides for us and he

  404. has peace for us in the middle of it

  405. with joy. We have joy through God in the

  406. middle of it. We have self-control in

  407. the middle of it. Doesn't mean that the

  408. problems will go away. We still going to

  409. walk through that, but we're just not

  410. alone. Um, and it's not after the battle

  411. is won. is not once the threat is over.

  412. Like he doesn't wait for that test

  413. result to be negative or in our case for

  414. that pregnancy test to be positive. Uh

  415. for that paycheck to hit your bank

  416. account, the haters or those criticizing

  417. you to shut up. He sets a table right

  418. there while while your enemies are

  419. watching.

  420. Then um the second part of that verse

  421. five says, "You anoint my head with oil.

  422. My cup overflows."

  423. Sheep are annoyed, tormented by flies.

  424. The solution is it's oil. The shepherd

  425. completely covers them in oil, even

  426. submerging them in it, and it becomes

  427. like a protective barrier against pests

  428. and parasites. It It was just

  429. life-saving, like putting all on their

  430. head. I read that the oil they use

  431. didn't just soothe, it shielded.

  432. And as we know, oil in the Bible refers

  433. to like the Holy Spirit, God's divine

  434. blessing and his empowerment.

  435. Um, we need a fresh anointing of the

  436. Holy Spirit daily. Not once a year in a

  437. men or women conference conference. Not

  438. just when the worship was really good uh

  439. last Sunday and I love the songs they

  440. picked. Not through one sermon on a

  441. Sunday to mark we attended a church this

  442. week. We need the Holy Spirit to be

  443. poured out on us aesh every single day

  444. to protect us from the spiritual flies

  445. that try to distract, infect, and

  446. irritate us.

  447. And know how difficult can that be?

  448. Sometimes we are all go all the time.

  449. multitasking, being productive,

  450. sometimes taking the time to sit, still

  451. to dwell in his presence feels like a

  452. chore. Like, do I really have to do this

  453. today because I have so many other

  454. things to do. Uh, we get so busy trying

  455. to be successful that run out of oil and

  456. get the flies back into our faces.

  457. Um, and those flies are different for

  458. all of us, right? It can be getting

  459. offended real quick, bitterness,

  460. comparison, insecurity,

  461. fear, anxiety, depression, doubts,

  462. temptation,

  463. sin. But if we got the oil, if we got

  464. the Holy Spirit, we can shield

  465. ourselves. And when the flies come and

  466. try to get into our face, when those

  467. thoughts come into our heads, the Holy

  468. Spirit soften hearts before offense

  469. settles in. The spirit reminds us of our

  470. identity in Christ. The spirit brings

  471. peace that guards our hearts despite the

  472. circumstances.

  473. The spirit empower us to overcome.

  474. I can even start to describe how much do

  475. I need the holy spirit in this season of

  476. my life. My thoughts can completely

  477. overpower me in this journey of trying

  478. to build or have a family.

  479. Sorry, I need to like there's certain

  480. things that I wrote here that I cried

  481. when I wrote it down and I cried when I

  482. read it again and I'm like I'm just

  483. going to take a pause because I don't

  484. want to cry here. I don't even have a

  485. clinics out here. So, okay. We've been

  486. married a little over six years and um

  487. as I mentioned before, even though my

  488. husband always knew he wanted to adopt,

  489. it took me longer to get there. I had to

  490. hear from God before I was able to move

  491. toward that direction. And eventually I

  492. did. Like it was clear to me. I was

  493. like, "Okay, this thank you so much." I

  494. was like, "Okay, this is this is what

  495. we're doing. I don't know when, but but

  496. we're going to do this." Um, and the

  497. fear of the uncertainty makes me want to

  498. take control. That's who I am, by the

  499. way. As if I knew better than God,

  500. right? I remember when I knew God was

  501. calling us to adopt, I told God that I

  502. needed to be a biological mom first.

  503. Yes, I was telling God what to do and

  504. how to do it. Um, I know you never go

  505. there. It's just me. The only that the

  506. only one that whispers to God how to do

  507. things. I was like, God, I do not want

  508. my adoptive child to think I adopted him

  509. or her because we couldn't have a

  510. biological kid.

  511. Like, therefore, I need to have a

  512. biological kid first and then you bless

  513. us with an adoptive child. Okay, cool.

  514. Sounds like a plan deal. Do you think

  515. that happened? Well, of course not. That

  516. did not happen. Um but and I was uh

  517. talking to my husband this morning and

  518. he was like he reminded me of a

  519. conversation he had with John and I and

  520. I thought of this I wrote here because

  521. it was a battle for us thinking

  522. we wanted to adopt and it's just the

  523. noise of the world like what are the

  524. people going to think and say and ask

  525. we don't we want to grow our family but

  526. we don't want

  527. bring in a kid to patch the desire of

  528. being parents because we're not bringing

  529. a kid to heal us. Like that's the job of

  530. the Holy Spirit. So, Pastor John and

  531. Robert had that conversation and they

  532. were like, "You we have to mourn this.

  533. It's okay." Um, and we're not bringing

  534. in a kid to fill that void. Like, this

  535. is just what God has called us to do.

  536. And of course, I had a perfect plan of

  537. first doing other things, but this just

  538. not how God intended it for my life. Um,

  539. so this year, as I mentioned earlier, we

  540. foster a 5-year-old boy and it was just

  541. for six days. Um, you guys, five years

  542. old or something else, like the things

  543. they would ask and it was so much fun.

  544. But I wrote uh sentence like things he

  545. would say on a book and and there's a

  546. lot of inner jokes in our home now

  547. because of that experience.

  548. Yeah, I didn't put a lot of that in

  549. here, but just thinking about it, he'll

  550. he he wouldn't call each other's like he

  551. wouldn't say, "Hey, can you tell

  552. Robert?" He will tell me, "Hey, can you

  553. tell your husband?"

  554. And he will tell Robert, "Can you tell

  555. your wife?" And it it was it was funny.

  556. I was like, "Do you know our names?

  557. Marcela, Robert?" I was like, "Yeah,

  558. your husband."

  559. Anyways, um so for him, uh despite the

  560. short period of time we foster him, it

  561. was clear to us um why he needed to

  562. spend time with us. He had never but

  563. never ever heard the gospel in his life.

  564. Uh we watched the movie Light of the

  565. World. Uh those with kids maybe know

  566. which movie I'm talking about. It's just

  567. just the life of Jesus. It's it's really

  568. nice. And because he had never heard the

  569. gospel, he was so surprised when Jesus

  570. died.

  571. He was jumping OUT OF THERE LIKE WHAT?

  572. WHAT? Jesus died. And we're like,

  573. "Uhhuh." Like in my mind like of course

  574. like what? Anyways, he was so surprised.

  575. So so surprised that Jesus died. He was

  576. like this this movie. What kind of movie

  577. are you making me watch, right? Like the

  578. hero just died. Uh so he couldn't make

  579. sense of the main character dying. Like

  580. he he didn't know what to do with that

  581. information. And I didn't want to like

  582. uh tell them the rest of the movie. I

  583. was like, "Yeah, we're going to heaven."

  584. And you know, I was just like, "Just

  585. watch. Just watch." Um, and I grew up in

  586. church, so I don't remember a time when

  587. I did not know Jesus died and

  588. resurrected. So, for me, experiencing

  589. someone coming to hear this for the very

  590. first time in his life was amazing.

  591. Like, it was I was like, "Okay."

  592. Anyways, we watched the movie and he was

  593. surprised and trying to make sense of

  594. what he was he just watched. So, I know

  595. God blessed us to have the privilege uh

  596. to share the gospel with this cute

  597. little 5-year-old. So, it was a short it

  598. was a short foster uh period of time. We

  599. fostered him for a short period of time,

  600. but it was great. Like, there's no doubt

  601. why he needed to be in our home. And it

  602. was fun. Anyways, back to where I was

  603. going with this. I remember it was the

  604. day that Verizon towers were down and we

  605. didn't have reception for a couple

  606. hours. Um, so it was a weekday, so I

  607. went to pick him up uh from school. We

  608. got home. I was finally back with like

  609. connected through Wi-Fi. And I got this

  610. text saying that they were picking him

  611. up at 6:00 p.m. So in foster world, that

  612. means washing everything, counting the

  613. pieces of shorts and pants and socks and

  614. everything, put it all in a bag and

  615. explaining him he's leaving, why he's

  616. leaving, who is he going? Like, so we

  617. went through all that. So, it was

  618. bittersweet. Um, he was with a family

  619. member, so I was happy. But it's also

  620. like as a human and as an adult, I was

  621. like, why didn't you put this kid with a

  622. family member in the first place? Like

  623. this kid had to go through all this. But

  624. then again, he heard the gospel and he

  625. watched that movie.

  626. So, it it it's makes more sense now. But

  627. back then, I was like, what?

  628. Anyways, um he went and that same day

  629. they told us that they there's um there

  630. was a little boy that he was already in

  631. foster care with another family that

  632. actually got licensed through one hope.

  633. Um and it seems like the like his case

  634. was going towards uh parental rights

  635. being terminated.

  636. So they will try to find a family open

  637. for adoption and they were like you may

  638. get a call to see if you would take him

  639. and he's he's about to turn one. So we

  640. got that call the same day 5-year-old

  641. boy was leaving our home after five or

  642. six days of being there. We did get a

  643. call. Uh we got the email with a picture

  644. little cute boy and the summary of

  645. what's going on um with his case. We

  646. said yes and then we had to wait to see

  647. if the case worker would pick us to

  648. place him in our care because you you

  649. kind of review you said yes and then the

  650. case manager case worker kind of has to

  651. pick the families. Um

  652. lots of lies come to my head those

  653. couple of days we waited. Um, but I pray

  654. that God's will be done and God

  655. shielding me with his Holy Spirit

  656. because there's just so much going on uh

  657. those couple of days just checking my

  658. phone like did we get picked? Did we get

  659. picked? A few days a few days later um

  660. we got a text message saying we have

  661. been selected for baby B. I I'll call

  662. him baby B because I don't want to say

  663. his name for YouTube. You can ask me

  664. later what's his name and that's a long

  665. story too but anyways uh because he was

  666. already in the system and with a one

  667. hope family the transition was smooth

  668. and center on his well-being. So we

  669. really appreciate that and the family

  670. that had him um was so kind to us.

  671. told us on Monday that baby be would

  672. come to our care within the following

  673. weeks and his birthday was that Tuesday

  674. and he his foster mom at the time

  675. invited us to celebrate his birthday. So

  676. we got to meet him the day he turned one

  677. so we wouldn't miss the birthday. Uh he

  678. got home in February and parental rights

  679. were relinquished a few months later

  680. and we are now in the process of

  681. adoption. And no, God did not follow my

  682. plan. He did not give me first a

  683. biological child. I'm not going to be

  684. and I'm pregnant, too. No, no, no, that

  685. did not happen. Um, and yes, I do get

  686. flies around my head because of this.

  687. But I do know the Holy Spirit empowers

  688. me to preach truth to myself when my

  689. mind wants to pay attention to the fear

  690. of the unknown,

  691. the fear of being vulnerable, of getting

  692. hurt. The Holy Spirit reminds me God

  693. before me and prepares a table before my

  694. enemies. So I get to enjoy his presence,

  695. his peace, and his joy in the midst of

  696. it all.

  697. Lastly,

  698. ask for fresh oil daily.

  699. Don't leave on leftovers.

  700. Invite the Holy Spirit into into your

  701. space every day at every time.

  702. Don't have that conversation before

  703. asking the Holy Spirit to come. Don't

  704. rush to decide without consulting with

  705. the Holy Spirit. Don't let your mind run

  706. to conclusions before you filter it all

  707. with the Holy Spirit. Take a break.

  708. Invite God. Invite the Holy Spirit to it

  709. all. To the good, to the bad, to the

  710. beautiful, to the ugly. Keep getting

  711. shielded by anointing you with his

  712. presence.

  713. Get so much of it that your cup

  714. overflows and you can be a blessing to

  715. those around you.

  716. I didn't write this note, but when I

  717. said this, I just thought of Ashley

  718. because she's been fostering and she

  719. reached out to me via email.

  720. And it was so nice to hear someone

  721. that's going through the same thing and

  722. someone I can text

  723. and read what what this is for somebody

  724. else and get encouragement.

  725. I'm so glad you're filled with the Holy

  726. Spirit in there for me. Um again, this

  727. is in my notes, but I just thought of

  728. that. We were at the park and you'll see

  729. our baby once we're done here. He's

  730. blonde and white. He doesn't look like

  731. he's my kid, right? And part of the

  732. flies I have to battle because I'm like,

  733. why did they like they didn't have a

  734. Hispanic kid that will look like me?

  735. Not I don't even know how I'm going to

  736. handle this. We were at the park and I

  737. was walking with him and then there's

  738. little I'm telling you 5 years old are

  739. hilarious. Like he looked AT ME LIKE,

  740. "ARE YOU HIS MOMMY?"

  741. And I was like, "Yes." I didn't even

  742. think of it. Like of course like I'm

  743. taking care of it. I'm his mom. And then

  744. I was like, "Oh." And Robert looked at

  745. me like, "Uh."

  746. Cuz yes, we don't we don't we don't look

  747. alike, right? So it's it's it's still so

  748. heavy on my heart because I don't know

  749. if I'm going to be full of the Holy

  750. Spirit and be like, "Yes, God has

  751. blessed me with him." I was like, "Who

  752. cares? Why do you ask? You know, I don't

  753. know what you're going to get." So um so

  754. that day I texted you and I said like,

  755. "Hey, can we got coffee?" Cuz I wanted

  756. to have that conversation with you. and

  757. three weeks have passed and we haven't

  758. had that coffee because I've been so

  759. busy with work. Um, so anyways, just

  760. get so much of the Holy Spirit that

  761. you're there for someone else.

  762. Verse six,

  763. surely goodness and mercy will follow me

  764. all the days of my life, and I shall

  765. dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  766. What a beautiful promise. God will

  767. pursue me. Wow, that sounds so

  768. encouraging.

  769. But let's be honest, like some days for

  770. some of us, most days, it doesn't feel

  771. that way. When the medical report isn't

  772. great or the bills are stacking up or

  773. things at home are falling apart,

  774. we we start to wonder, is God's goodness

  775. really following me right now? Beautiful

  776. bed. uh burst, but the mess I have going

  777. on in my personal life, it's still there

  778. once I leave this church today, right?

  779. My circumstances remain the same. I

  780. personally still have to deal with the

  781. fact that God has not blessed us with a

  782. biological kid. And I don't know if he

  783. ever will.

  784. But just because we can see, it doesn't

  785. mean it's not happening.

  786. God is pursuing us. He loves us a lot

  787. despite what we may think,

  788. despite the circumstances.

  789. To dig deeper into this phrase, and you

  790. can check later with Randle because he

  791. knows Hebrew because I Googled this and

  792. watch YouTube videos. So I what do I

  793. know? He may know. But the Hebrew word

  794. translated follow is radaf or radafath.

  795. I don't know. which means to chase down,

  796. to hunt, or relentlessly pursue.

  797. So, this isn't casual goodness. This

  798. isn't mercy wandering aimlessly behind

  799. you. This is God's goodness chasing you

  800. down. God is not just watching over you.

  801. He is trying to grab you into his

  802. presence with his staff as the good

  803. shepherd he is. The love and care God of

  804. God is active, relentless. He doesn't

  805. get tired like us. He doesn't give up

  806. like us. So come and rest. Come and

  807. enjoy his presence. Life won't get

  808. easier nor perfect because you get near

  809. him. But it would get full of his

  810. presence to shelter us, to protect us,

  811. to love us, to encourage us. And as I

  812. mentioned before, now we do have home a

  813. little boy. And our lives have changed.

  814. It's great. It's amazing. I I love it.

  815. Of course, it's not how I planned it.

  816. But God knew better. God knew better. Uh

  817. there's a court coming up in August

  818. 13th. I don't think we'll have all the

  819. paperwork ready to move forward like

  820. setting a date for adoption, but we'll

  821. be close to that. So, just keep us in

  822. your prayers.

  823. It's it's the when you have a biological

  824. kid, like you give birth to that child

  825. and it's yours, right? When you foster

  826. and foster to adopt, like you have court

  827. hearings, paperwork every month, and

  828. until you don't have that final document

  829. saying that's your kid, you still have

  830. that sensation of what if he ends up not

  831. being my kid? And at this point,

  832. I can't bear

  833. the idea of losing him. me like the same

  834. person I didn't want to adopt a kid.

  835. Right here I am like no like I'm gonna

  836. skip to El Salvador with this kid if

  837. you're just kidding. Don't cut it up

  838. then put that on YouTube. I'm lying. I'm

  839. an I'm a licensed attorney. I follow the

  840. law. Okay.

  841. Anyways um as I prepare for today, I

  842. read the following about uh this psalm

  843. that I would like to use to conclude my

  844. short message this morning. And it said,

  845. um, and don't miss the significance of

  846. this, sheep are most vulnerable when

  847. they're isolated from the flock, when

  848. they stray, they're easy targets. That's

  849. why community is vital. Being part of

  850. the fold isn't just nice. It's it's

  851. necessary. The enemy picks off those who

  852. wandered alone, alone.

  853. Stay close. Stay connected.

  854. And I love reading that and being able

  855. to say with certainty that this is

  856. something that the vineyard thrives on.

  857. Um I have failed as a vineyard member

  858. multiple times. I tend to feel like no

  859. one is going through what I'm going

  860. through and then I isolated myself. At

  861. the very beginning I was like no like

  862. everyone is American. I don't want to

  863. like they don't know me. I it was a

  864. struggle. I think like when when you're

  865. an immigrant that's some there's a side

  866. of you that is like I'm here but they

  867. don't know me. They know my version in

  868. English but the pro version is in

  869. Spanish and they don't get that version

  870. of me. So I tend to like I don't want to

  871. be in community and put myself being

  872. vulnerable saying weird stuff like my

  873. husband now it's I guess okay with me

  874. saying things that make no sense and

  875. they be like what did you mean this? is

  876. like yes that

  877. um anyways don't be like me be in

  878. community and this is just a reminder

  879. for me and for some of you like me

  880. probably that are still not living in

  881. community text someone make yourself

  882. uncomfortable and get together

  883. gather and carry each other burdens.

  884. Um, and just before I give those who

  885. prayed this morning the mic to come and

  886. share uh what God spoke to them and as

  887. the worship team probably comes back up

  888. here, I'm going to read one more time

  889. this beautiful two verses and I'm going

  890. to close us in prayer and I'll pray in

  891. Spanish. I was telling my husband, I'll

  892. pray in Spanish. I was like, it's okay.

  893. John is not here.

  894. So, I'm going to read I'm going to read

  895. the the two verses and then I'm going to

  896. pray it as as the worship team comes

  897. back up here.

  898. Um, you prepare a table before me in the

  899. presence of my enemies. You anoint my

  900. head with oil. My cup overflows.

  901. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow

  902. me all the days of my life. and I shall

  903. dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  904. Let's bow our heads and pray.

  905. Fore!

  906. Fore!chch!

  907. Amen.

  908. >> Amen.

  909. Amen.
