  1. Hello and welcome to the warm Church podcast.

  2. It's boxing day Monday. The 26th of September and we

  3. trust you having a memorable and blessed Christmas.

  4. My name is Tom and along with Philip and my wife.

  5. We lead the one Church owed be site and I have the chance of

  6. sharing a message with you today and the title of this message is

  7. who brings mern to her birthday. So I'm sure that nearly all of

  8. us listening will have received some kind of gift in the last

  9. couple of days or whenever you're listening to this, it's

  10. been a week of giving. Some gifts are great to receive

  11. some gifts, not so much. Here's a guide of some definite

  12. gifts not to get on certain days if it's a mum's birthday, never

  13. give anti-aging Chrome. If it's an anniversary, flowers

  14. are good, a Action of flowers. Plain self-raising, gluten-free

  15. are not a good idea. A baby shower, don't buy shower

  16. gel or a loofah. It's not that kind of shower and

  17. if you're going to a funeral party poppers and party hats are

  18. not advised amazingly, the GIF. We're going to talk about today

  19. that really was given was even more inappropriate.

  20. It seemed than these. I remember going to a friend's

  21. birthday party. When I was 10 years old, his

  22. name was Tim and I Bought him gel pens.

  23. I don't know why, but I got it in my head that this was the

  24. worst gift ever and he would hate it.

  25. So when we got back to his house after the party, he said he was

  26. opening his presence and I was so nervous.

  27. I went and hid in the toilet while he opened them.

  28. Thankfully he actually liked his present but I was terrified the

  29. other day. My daughter Rosie received a

  30. card for her birthday and you know she has a sister called Zoe

  31. and often their names are mixed And there in the card.

  32. It said, dear Zoe happy birthday with love from the person.

  33. It was from, we did laugh about it and there was a present

  34. inside. So she wasn't too fussed in the

  35. story of the first Christmas, the visit of the Magi to Jesus

  36. has been told in countless nativities, and stories and

  37. retellings around the globe. Jesus is somewhere between one

  38. and two years old, moved to a house living in Bethlehem.

  39. Mmm. And In This Moment, the major I

  40. arrived, I'm going to read from Matthew 2, and then we're going

  41. to talk about the gifts that they bought to Jesus after Jesus

  42. was born in Bethlehem in Judea during the time of King Herod

  43. Magi, from the East came to Jerusalem and asked, where is

  44. the one who has been born? King of the Jews.

  45. We saw his star when it Rose, and have come to worship him.

  46. When King Herod heard this, he was Disturbed and all Jerusalem

  47. with him. When he had called together all

  48. the peoples Chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked

  49. them where the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem in Judea, they

  50. replied. The this is what the prophet has

  51. written. So Herod called the Magi

  52. secretly and found out from them the exact time.

  53. The star had appeared and sent them to Bethlehem and said, go

  54. and search carefully for the child.

  55. As soon as you find him report to me, sir, I too may go and

  56. worship him. After they'd heard the king,

  57. they went on their way and the star they had seen when it Rose

  58. went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the

  59. child was when they saw the star, they were Overjoyed on

  60. coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary

  61. and they bowed down and worshiped him.

  62. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of

  63. gold, frankincense and myrrh and having been warned in a dream

  64. not to go back to Herod. They returned to their country

  65. by another route. The Magi came to the Palace of

  66. course. That's where you'd expect to

  67. find a newborn king but they came ready to bring their

  68. adoration and their worship. They came ready to bring

  69. something of worth. They came ready to bring gifts

  70. to this newborn king. They must have been excited and

  71. expectant as they arrived there at the palace and then when they

  72. arrived at the simple home and met Mary and Jesus, In the

  73. Greek, the word proskuneo is used when they talk about

  74. worshiping. It's not just a coming and

  75. singing a song, but that word means to lean and kiss towards

  76. another literally, these wise people, these major I had come

  77. to kneel and kiss towards this young boy, Jesus to celebrate.

  78. They had brought gifts. Now, these gifts, we will have

  79. heard I'm sure many is many, many times.

  80. Gold frankincense and myrrh. Gold Berlin frankincense.

  81. Yeah, sure. But who brings myrrh to a

  82. birthday? Imagine if you're visiting a new

  83. child and say congratulations to the family and then you give

  84. that little child, a leaflet from Cooperative Funeral Care,

  85. it just doesn't sit, right, this is exactly what happened in this

  86. moment, they were basically giving this child something that

  87. symbolized Death. But first, let's talk about the

  88. gold. Now bringing gold to a King,

  89. obviously gold. It honors the Great and the

  90. Royal in the ancient world and still today, it's a symbol of

  91. value and wealth, gold, calf, gold, Menorah gold currency,

  92. gold, jewelry, gold decoration, and gold streets in Revelation.

  93. All Through the Bible, we find gold even the holy of holies the

  94. most holy place in the temple where people could encounter

  95. gods. Presents.

  96. It was adorned with gold. Gold comes supposedly from the

  97. Collision of neutron stars but all I know is its mind and

  98. traded and exchanged around the world it's a metal that you can

  99. beat one gram of into a one meter squared sheet.

  100. It's an amazingly malleable and also precious material, the gold

  101. gift tells and reminds us that Jesus is royal he is of great

  102. worth like the finest Palace and Temple but the gold could also

  103. tell us that Jesus like the holy of holies is this gold adorned

  104. one through whom all people can encounter the presence of God.

  105. The second gift, the Mage I gave was frankincense frankincense it

  106. kind of makes sense. It was for burning and sacrifice

  107. and offering it was used in worship.

  108. They've come to worship the newborn king and so they bought

  109. frankincense. We find this material in Exodus

  110. 30 where it's used for burning and making something pure and

  111. sacred. It comes from the sap of a tree

  112. and in the ancient world, The life of a tree was its sap and

  113. when it was cut, it would flow Harden and then be used.

  114. And this was frankincense and this gift tells us, that Jesus

  115. is Worthy of worship. He's worthy of sacrifice, and

  116. that is what the Mage I had come to do.

  117. But it could also tell us something more.

  118. Perhaps, it tells us that Jesus is the new pure and sacred

  119. offering a fragrance that would be holy like no other.

  120. Frankincense makes sense. But Ma who brings myrrh to a

  121. birthday myrrh was for anointing and preparing, but mainly for

  122. anointing preparing an embalming the Dead.

  123. It came from a rare tree, it would be cut deeply repeatedly

  124. to extract this sap. This murmur.

  125. Now, this murmur would have been used to anoint, as well as just

  126. the dead, many things. In fact, in the Bible, Marie's

  127. used to anoint priests and the Altar and the temple before

  128. sacrifices are made. Perhaps, it's just telling us

  129. that Jesus is anointing oil preparing all to be made, right?

  130. With God, but actually the myrrh speaks to us of death.

  131. This baby boy there in Bethlehem who they came to worship.

  132. He was born and set apart to die, and Jesus did he did die?

  133. He was a precious gift, a light to the world Hosanna.

  134. Hallelujah Messiah. Savior, yet Jesus died.

  135. And at Christmas, we think of this newborn life but also we

  136. must remember that this child, this King gave his life.

  137. The next time we read about murmur is in John chapter 19, in

    John 19 chapter mention

  138. the aftermath of Jesus death on the cross.

  139. And we read this, Joseph of Arimathea asked pilate for the

  140. body of Jesus. He came and took the body away.

  141. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, they brought a mixture of myrrh

  142. and aloes about 75 pounds, taking Jesus body.

  143. The two of them wrapped it with the spices in strips of linen.

  144. In at the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden

  145. and in the garden, a new Tomb in which no one had ever been laid

  146. and they laid Jesus there. Who brings myrrh to a birthday?

  147. Well, I for one am glad the major I did, because the death

  148. and resurrection of Jesus is the Hope for the whole world and is

  149. the Hope for my life. Just like when murder is

  150. harvested, Jesus is the deeply and repeatedly cut tree.

  151. His sap released his life given up.

  152. He was pierced blood and water flowed from his side, Jesus gave

  153. up his life and so we've all of this is really true about Jesus.

  154. If he does replace the holy of holies and the sacrifices

  155. rituals offerings Consecration and purification.

  156. If through his death, we can all be welcomed into God's presence.

  157. If all of this happened because of what Jesus did his life death

  158. and Resurrection, then maybe bringing Myrtle a birthday is

  159. actually the greatest gift that could have been given.

  160. Maybe it's not strange after all, but maybe it gives us hope

  161. today. Wherever you're listening from

  162. and perhaps you're listening on boxing day or in the week after

  163. Christmas or even at a later date, I'd love to pray for you.

  164. So let's pray together. Loving father, thank you for the

  165. miracle and the reality of Christmas.

  166. Thank you for your son Jesus in the gift of gold.

  167. We thank you, Jesus, for your immeasurable worth may.

  168. We learn to bring you the Worship.

  169. You Deserve like the major I did.

  170. In the gift of Frankincense, we thank you.

  171. Jesus, that you're the pure and sacred offering and may we enter

  172. into the presence of God, with boldness in the gift of myrrh.

  173. We thank you Jesus, that your life was one of preparation and

  174. anointing. We thank you for your death,

  175. your resurrection and that we are transformed because of it

  176. and to you Jesus our King, our holy of holies, our Pure
