  1. We are one church. We love God, love people, love

  2. His mission, and love His church.

  3. Welcome to the One Church Podcast I.

  4. Had the joy today of speaking about the power of miracles.

  5. If you don't know what a miracle is, maybe you're new to church.

  6. Maybe you're not a follower of Jesus.

  7. A miracle is an extraordinary, divinely caused event that goes

  8. against or overrules the normal laws of nature, demonstrating

  9. God's power and His intervention in the world.

  10. Signs and wonders on miracles confirm God's presence, His

  11. authority, and His love for humankind.

  12. Today, He is still the God of miracles and in our nation

  13. people are searching for something.

  14. The statistics of those who are coming to church either for the

  15. first time or returning to it, are constantly on the rise.

  16. And the challenge is this. People are looking to see is he

  17. really who he says He is? And one of the ways that we

  18. measure that is by the fact that he is still at working miracles

  19. today. People are looking for the

  20. answer to their question of is Jesus really the Messiah?

  21. Is God genuinely all powerful? And the landing in churches

  22. asking those questions because it's time for us to be a people

  23. who walk in the miraculous power of God so that his Kingdom might

  24. be demonstrated on the earth, that lost people would find

  25. their way into a relationship with Jesus.

  26. People are asking the question that John the Baptist did.

  27. Are you really the Messiah or should we keep looking for

  28. somebody else Church this morning.

  29. Let's be a people who are bold and brave in our prayers and

  30. just perhaps the Lord's going to do what only he can do Father, I

  31. pray that as we look through some texts today, God, you are

  32. who you say you are. We've tested.

  33. We've seen the reality of your wonder working power.

  34. And Father, I pray today you would help me articulate your

  35. words well. And Lord in the room, I pray

  36. right now, Holy Spirit, would you come?

  37. Would you come, would you come, would you come?

  38. Lord, in Acts 2 and in Acts 4 we find this, that you fill the

  39. place before you fill the people.

  40. And God I ask, would you come and just fill this place with

  41. the fullness of your spirit? Help us be receptive to your

  42. Kingdom here in Jesus name, Amen.

  43. Well, through the Bible we see He is the God of miracles now

  44. and back then. And there's a lie that the enemy

  45. likes to try and tell the people of God.

  46. He likes to try and tell us that God no longer uses His people to

  47. carry about His miraculous power.

  48. The enemy likes to try and tell the church that miracles were

  49. for the apostles then and not today.

  50. I want to tell you categorically that is a lie.

  51. He is still the King of Kings. He is still at work in His

  52. power, and there is no mention in the text at all that the Holy

  53. Spirit is no longer operational in his body and in His pride.

  54. And if you want proof of that, let me give you some stories,

  55. and then we're going to read a couple of texts before we apply

  56. it to our own lives. My sister Stephanie is her name.

  57. At the age of 14, she received a diagnosis of ME or chronic

  58. fatigue. She scraped through her A levels

  59. and she came out with the grades BED, which was ironic As for

  60. those two years, that's where she spent most of her time.

  61. She was on a Christian summer camp one year, and with minimal

  62. fanfare, she was prayed over by some of her friends.

  63. And outwardly, nothing dramatic happened.

  64. But internally, everything began to shift and almost overnight

  65. her body began to function as God intended it to do.

  66. Since that day, she's had no issues with her energy levels or

  67. ability to operate at full capacity.

  68. She's now a married lady with two young precious girls active

  69. in her local church life and walking out.

  70. The reality of a God who heals. A young lad who goes by the name

  71. of Tom. He was part of our youth group

  72. many years ago during a weekend away, Tom, after playing

  73. football, had an asthma attack. He probably should have told us

  74. on his forms that he had asthma. He didn't tell us.

  75. So part of that's his own fault. And we treated it with inhalers

  76. and he was all right. And that evening he was prayed

  77. for during the meeting by a group of friends.

  78. And then the following day, without thinking at all, Tom was

  79. back out playing football and towards the end of a 2 hour

  80. runaround, he realised that he had no tightness in his chest,

  81. no shortness of breath. And from that day he's never

  82. needed an inhaler again. But you can ask Bridget.

  83. Bridget testified to this the other day.

  84. She suffered with serious back pain for a long time, recently

  85. got some new medication, and it's not really made much of a

  86. difference. And a couple of weeks ago, she

  87. sat in the car on the way to church and said this, If nothing

  88. happens during worship today, I'm going to go and sit in my

  89. car. That Sunday, we felt the need to

  90. have a spontaneous moment of waiting deliberately for the

  91. power of God to come. And as we did, Ashton played the

  92. piano and something happened with no human intervention.

  93. Her back was completely and instantly healed a couple of

  94. weeks ago and they're stories of miracles in the form of healing.

  95. And I'll try and hold it together for this, a miracle

  96. that is not necessarily Heena related.

  97. A couple of weeks, a couple of months before we were due to get

  98. married and we were going to go on a on a road trip around

  99. Italy. We bought a Mazda MX5 and we

  100. were going to travel through France and Switzerland and spend

  101. some time in Tuscany and a little while before that I

  102. received a call from Alice's phone but the voice was someone

  103. that I didn't recognise and she said to me your fiance has just

  104. been in a car crash, you need to come.

  105. Her instructions were very vague as to her whereabouts.

  106. So I got in my car and drove slightly above the speed limit

  107. towards the A six O 6 where I was greeted with the image of an

  108. air ambulance on the scene and Alice's Citroen C3 wrapped

  109. around a tree off the road in a ditch.

  110. She'd been knocked off the road by a Toyota Hiluxi.

  111. Failed to stop at a T-shirt section junction.

  112. I'd ram them while they were travelling at about 5055 mph.

  113. She should have been dead. That was the remark of the

  114. paramedic to the scene. And yet I went to find Alice and

  115. she sat there. She's a little cut on her nose

  116. and then we drove to Tesco Express to get some magic stars

  117. to make it feel better. It's coincidental.

  118. It's not coincidence. Incredible.

  119. When I pray or when you pray, coincidences happen.

  120. Perhaps there's correlation to our prayers that lead to

  121. coincidence. He's still the God who outweighs

  122. miracles. I can tell you dozens, maybe

  123. hundreds of miracles I've witnessed with my own life.

  124. Some of them as I've prayed and other times as people around me

  125. have prayed, where people have been released in their bodies,

  126. sickness has gone. I can tell you where people's

  127. minds have been set free and mental health restored.

  128. I can tell you other times where I've prayed and situations have

  129. been turned around. And in Tanzania a couple of

  130. years ago, Zoe, he's currently in Bronson site and I were stood

  131. in a village that hadn't seen rain for months.

  132. And we thought, well, why don't we give it a go?

  133. And as we prayed, the heavens opened that people didn't know

  134. what to do with themselves. Because he's still recorded his

  135. miracles. And it's not because I pray,

  136. it's not because she prayed. It's not because you've prayed.

  137. It's because of who he is. He is still the miracle working

  138. God. And the challenge for us is

  139. this. He calls us to be a miracle

  140. working people. My caveat also is I can tell you

  141. just as many times where I've prayed for something and it's

  142. not happened, but my experience must not dictate my theology.

  143. Just because I haven't seen it doesn't mean that's no longer

  144. who he is. I want to encourage you.

  145. If you feel discouraged because you've prayed and something's

  146. not happened, your situation must not dictate your theology.

  147. Your circumstance must not change your view according to

  148. the text of who your God is. I want to encourage us to get

  149. the church that we're about to see something of the miraculous

  150. power of God. And if you're sat in the room

  151. today, sure of you are. You're in the middle of a

  152. miracle. Let me talk to you a tiny bit

  153. about our story. You know, one church was birthed

  154. out of the miraculous coming together of Trinity Life and all

  155. nations. Both the churches independently

  156. were founded on the miraculous. TLC began in the 50s after a

  157. healing crusade through Leicester, and it gathered a

  158. group of people that purchased a plot of land and began to build.

  159. All Nations was birthed in a home in the 70s, founded on a

  160. deep sense of the presence of God and longing for breakthrough

  161. in the city. In our history as churches,

  162. we've given away money that we'd kept for buildings.

  163. We poured into loving the lost and the least and the broken.

  164. Instead of putting our needs first.

  165. We dreamed of a space the Lord had never provided until those

  166. two churches came together in something of a marriage between

  167. His power and His presence. And since all nations and TLC

  168. became one church, we've been living in a miracle.

  169. The miracle of His provision, His unity, the miracle of these

  170. premises, and greater than that, the miracle of hundreds of

  171. people find in Christ, which, by the way, is still the greatest

  172. miracle on the face of the earth.

  173. And in the room we could share stories, probably until Jesus

  174. returns, about His goodness demonstrated in our own lives.

  175. We're in the middle of a miracle, but the Lord's about to

  176. do something miraculous among us.

  177. In Mark 16 we read this. He Jesus said to them, go into

  178. all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

  179. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does

  180. not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany

  181. those who believe in my name. There will drive out demons.

  182. There will speak in new tongues, they'll pick up snakes with

  183. their hands, and they will drink deadly poison, and it will not

  184. hurt them. They will place their hands on

  185. sick people and they will get well.

  186. After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into

  187. heaven and sat at the right hand of God.

  188. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the

  189. Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs

  190. that accompanied it. He's still the God who does

  191. miracles, He always has been the God who does miracles for you

  192. and I in the room. How does this relate to us?

  193. I want to encourage you and I want to challenge you as the

  194. Lord has been challenging me. If you're making notes this

  195. morning, firstly we are commissioned.

  196. Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

  197. If you are a Jesus follower in the room, you are an ambassador

  198. of Christ. You are a witness to the world,

  199. called to bear His name and to walk in His power.

  200. The Commission that He gave to the disciples both in Matthew 28

  201. and then the same thing that we find here in our text today is

  202. to go out and to preach the Gospel in Matthew to all peoples

  203. here in Mark, to all creation. This is your and my Commission,

  204. and the Commission hasn't changed.

  205. There's not been an update. There's not been a heavenly fax

  206. that's appeared on earth. This is the text that we're

  207. called to live with. You and I this morning have been

  208. commissioned and appointed as Kingdom bringers here on the

  209. face of the earth. Even more so than that, since

  210. Jesus was taken up into heaven to be sat at the throne of the

  211. Father, you and I have become the visible image of God on the

  212. earth. It is our job from Genesis to

  213. now to bring His Kingdom here. The cause of humanity at the

  214. start was to take dominion over the land, and since the Spirit

  215. has been poured out, the call is still the same, to take dominion

  216. by means of bringing His Kingdom from heaven to earth.

  217. That's why we're here. If that wasn't our purpose, He

  218. would take us up to be with Him as soon as we gave Him our

  219. lives. He set you on this planet for a

  220. purpose and for a reason. We find this also in Luke 10.

  221. The Lord appointed 72 and he sent them out ahead of Him, two

  222. by two, to every town and place where He was about to go.

  223. He told them heal the sick and tell them the Kingdom of God has

  224. come near to you. We are a commissioned people.

  225. You're not just sat here in church called to live out your

  226. Christianity on a Sunday morning and then carry on as normal on

  227. Monday. We're cool to be a witness to

  228. the world. You are in positions of

  229. influence that James, myself, Ashton, Alice, Claire do not

  230. live in because we're here and you're out in the secular

  231. environment called and born to make a difference.

  232. I want to encourage you. Let's take the Commission, let's

  233. take the call and let's live out in our ordinary everyday

  234. experience. And you go, how?

  235. How can we do that? What does it look like?

  236. You, Josh? You don't know how hard it is to

  237. be a Christian in my workplace. I don't.

  238. Jesus does. He was whipped, spat out,

  239. beaten, mocked. I don't know how bad your work

  240. experience is, but let me tell you, He understands and if he

  241. can empowered by Holy Spirit, so can you.

  242. I want to ask you Church, in light of this Commission, will

  243. you join with me and not sit back and wait for somebody else

  244. to do the work that He has appointed for us?

  245. Let's not let what the law wants to do in this pass by and wait

  246. for the next generation. Let's be a people who take the

  247. Commission and work it out in our everyday environment.

  248. Secondly, we are empowered, not just commissioned, not just set

  249. apart for purpose, because that alone would not be sufficient to

  250. walk out the task that He has created us for.

  251. Not only does God Commission us, He also empowers us.

  252. Why? Because this is the text, and

  253. these signs will accompany those who believe.

  254. This is a promise from God to His people.

  255. I don't know how you pray. Sometimes when I pray, I bring

  256. the promises of God back to His attention, as if it's possible

  257. for him to forget, right? The only thing he forgets is our

  258. sin, because He removes it as far as the east from the West.

  259. But everything else is kept in memory.

  260. But when I pray, I bring God's Word back to Him.

  261. Maybe you want to try doing that in your own life.

  262. When I'm praying for the sick, I might say things like this.

  263. Lord, you said, these signs will accompany those who believe.

  264. I will often say to the Lord, Lord, you said in my name, they

  265. will drive out demons, they'll place their hands on the sick

  266. and they will get well. I'll say to the Lord, you said,

  267. the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

  268. I'll say to him, Lord you said, if you ask me for anything in my

  269. name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified from the

  270. Son. I'll say to him, Lord you said,

  271. heal the sick and tell them the Kingdom of God has come.

  272. Why? Because that is what we are

  273. commissioned to do and that is what we are empowered to live

  274. out. I want to encourage you Church,

  275. as the Lord's been encouraging me.

  276. Don't shrink back from opportunity.

  277. Realise that you are commissioned and that you are

  278. empowered and lastly you are sent to go.

  279. How do we know His power is genuine in our lives?

  280. We have the authority of Christ because we live in and under the

  281. authority of Christ Jesus. Conversation with the Roman

  282. Centurion, if you want to look it up for context.

  283. He says all authority on heaven and earth has been given to me.

  284. Therefore go if we live under His authority and he carries all

  285. authority, then we are people of authority.

  286. So not only are we commissions, but we're empowered and then

  287. we're sent in John 2019 to 20. We read this on the evening of

  288. the first day of the week when the disciples were together with

  289. the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders.

  290. Jesus came and stood among them. I mean, what did that feel like?

  291. We read the text and, and sometimes we're not creative

  292. enough in our imagination to picture the scene.

  293. But these guys are terrified. As far as they knew, he was

  294. dead. That's the last update they had.

  295. The last update they had on the person of Jesus was hanging on

  296. the cross and they're weeping at his feet.

  297. And then Jesus did some conversation about mother,

  298. here's your son, and son, here's your mother.

  299. And they're all going, what are we going to do next?

  300. And they're locked inside. They're behind closed doors.

  301. The doors are barred and sealed because they don't want the

  302. religious leaders to get on their case because he said he

  303. was a Messiah. But actually he's dead in the

  304. ground and we don't know what to do.

  305. And then all of a sudden, he just shows up in the room.

  306. How did he get there? Doesn't say he opened the door.

  307. I wonder if Jesus has teleportation powers.

  308. Maybe potentially he just walked through the wall and appeared

  309. before them. I don't know.

  310. But he turned up and everything changed and he said this.

  311. Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed

  312. them his hands and his side. I'll tell you that he is the

  313. only God capital G, but even of all the gods lowercase G that

  314. still carries scars. He sat in eternity at the right

  315. hand of the Father as a man in human flesh in a miracle that I

  316. don't have the understanding to explain to you.

  317. But I do know this, that on his wrist and his feet and his side

  318. still bear the scars of what he carried.

  319. And he shows them the pain that he bore for their sake.

  320. And then Jesus said, peace be with you as the Father has sent

  321. me, I am sending you. And then he breathed on them and

  322. said, receive the Holy Spirit commissioned, empowered, sent.

  323. The sending of the 12 or the 11 at that point is the sending

  324. that we receive again this morning and again tomorrow and

  325. again on Tuesday. We are called to go just as the

  326. Father has sent Jesus, He is sending us.

  327. I want to tell you this, and this might be a news flash for

  328. you, nobody else is coming until Jesus comes back.

  329. Nobody else is coming to step into your work environment.

  330. It's just you and you're enough because He's commissioned you

  331. and He's empowered you. It's well and good looking at

  332. Jesus in the text and what he says, but how does that actually

  333. transform the early church? Well, let me just read you this

  334. from Acts 5, the apostles. This is while Jesus is in

  335. heaven, seated at the right hand of the Father, empowered by the

  336. Holy Spirit. The apostles performed many

  337. signs and wonders among the people.

  338. Acts 5 verse 12 onwards. And all the believers used to

    Acts 5:12

  339. meet together in Solomon's colonnade.

  340. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly

  341. regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more

  342. women and men believed in the Lord and were added to their

  343. number. As a result, people brought

  344. their sick onto the streets and laid them on beds and mats so

  345. that at least Peter's shadow might fall on them as he passed

  346. by. Crowds also gathered from the

  347. towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented

  348. by impure spirits. And here's the line, all of them

  349. were healed in the absence of Jesus in the body, but in the

  350. power of Jesus spirit sent to earth.

  351. That's still our call and our Commission.

  352. And we don't have time this morning to get into all the

  353. nuances. How do you pray for someone who

  354. requires more prayer than a one off thing?

  355. We can do some training on that. There are people who spend a lot

  356. of time doing Christian counselling and healing and

  357. speaking into people's spirits and and doing the hard work

  358. behind the scenes. If you want to know more than we

  359. can talk to you. We don't have time today to talk

  360. about the what if God doesn't? Sometimes he heals and sometimes

  361. he decides not to. Why is that?

  362. I don't know aside from this that He is sovereign and He

  363. always brings about his plans and purposes.

  364. And my job, and your job is to be simply obedient.

  365. It is not your job to understand.

  366. Be freed of that. Lord, I don't understand.

  367. Who cares? One day you will.

  368. Because when we see him, we'll be like him.

  369. Then we'll know Him as He really is.

  370. It's our job to live obedient. And the obedience is this.

  371. Go. I'm sending you.

  372. We don't have time this morning to talk about does my faith

  373. impact somebody else's need for a miracle?

  374. Yeah, maybe. And also simultaneously,

  375. absolutely not, because he can do it without you.

  376. But he chooses to partner with us, which for me makes no sense

  377. because I'm the problem in our relationship, not him.

  378. It's so much easier if he just did it on his own.

  379. But He wants to work through His people because He's a relational

  380. God for us this morning. The only way that we can get it

  381. wrong is by saying no. When He calls us to go, we are

  382. commissioned to walk in His power and He has enabled us to

  383. do so. Don't feel condemned, feel

  384. stirred. You are in the room today as a

  385. person that God wants to use to bring His Kingdom here on earth.

  386. You're not a spectator. You're not a bomb on a seat.

  387. You're known by the King of Kings and powered, commissioned

  388. and born to make a difference, and the enemy would love to rob

  389. you and keep you silent. It's not a time for sleeping,

  390. it's a time to wake up. Let me give you some practical

  391. thoughts. Some of this is healing related,

  392. but in the context of miracles as a whole.

  393. When we're praying for a miracle in the life of an individual,

  394. specifically when it relates to healing, here are three things.

  395. Firstly, command. Don't ask, He might say, well,

  396. that feels weird. Surely I have to ask.

  397. The Lord Jesus never said pray for the sick.

  398. He said heal the sick. You've been given authority.

  399. You're not supposed to pray a Lord.

  400. Would you? If it's part of your will, would

  401. you heal this person because his Will's already been laid out for

  402. us? He gives authority to pray

  403. sickness away and invite the Kingdom of God.

  404. And yet, even though we can command, we don't need to shout,

  405. right? A lot of context.

  406. When people are praying for the sicko, when people are praying

  407. for people to be set free from evil spirits, we feel like we've

  408. got to shout. Trust me, the Lord can hear you.

  409. And if someone's carrying a demon, they can too.

  410. Don't shout, don't need to shout.

  411. Very few cases in the Bible where Jesus shouted commands

  412. don't ask because we pray. Pray from a position of

  413. authority. Secondly, when you're praying

  414. for a miracle, after you've commanded and you've asked the

  415. presence of God, we ask the Lord, but we command sickness to

  416. leave. Lord, would he come?

  417. I command the sickness to leave in the name of Jesus.

  418. That's where we begin. Secondly, you do this, you watch

  419. and you wait. Often the less we do, the more

  420. He does. Keep your eyes open when you

  421. pray for another so you can see what the Lord's doing.

  422. And then thirdly, if possible, test and see not taste and

  423. seeing this context, test and see when I'm praying for someone

  424. who's got a specific injury or challenge.

  425. So if someone comes in with a really bad knee and I pray for

  426. them, but I don't ask them to test the knee out, I've no idea

  427. whether the Lord's done anything or not.

  428. So ask what's the worst they can say, oh, sorry, nothing's

  429. happened and you go, don't worry about it.

  430. Would you like me to pray for you again?

  431. And if they say no, you say OK and you walk away knowing that

  432. you've done your bits. It's not on you, it's on him.

  433. Is that all right? Simple.

  434. And you can do that in your work context.

  435. What Sunday is supposed to be is a training ground for the public

  436. sector. We try it here and then you do

  437. it out there where it counts. Not that it doesn't count

  438. because you're in the room and he loves you, but he he wants

  439. the lost to know his power. The Lord bless you and keep you.

  440. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you.

  441. The Lord turn his face towards you and give you peace.
