  1. We are one church. We love God, love people, love

  2. His mission, and love His church.

  3. Welcome to the One Church Podcast.

  4. We're starting 2026 by looking at the most important words ever

  5. spoken, the words of Jesus. And in this series, Jesus said

  6. his words are going to shape us. They're going to change us,

  7. they're going to grow us, they're going to help us, and we

  8. want to let him speak into our house.

  9. And we begin today by looking at some of the words Jesus said

  10. about prayer. What a better place to start

  11. than this. So good.

  12. And here we are in Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  13. This then is how you should pray.

  14. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your Kingdom come,

  15. your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  16. Give us today Our Daily Bread and forgive us our sins, as we

  17. forgive those who sin against us.

  18. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  19. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever

  20. and ever. Amen.

  21. Prayer is to be a delight for Jesus followers.

  22. It's a connection between you and the God who created

  23. everything. I was listening to how many

  24. galaxies there are, how many galaxies that we can see, and

  25. yet all the galaxies that exist outside.

  26. The God who holds all that together wants a connection with

  27. you to talk to you and for you to talk to Him.

  28. It's this open door for us to communicate to one another.

  29. The One who loves you the most invites you to a safe place so

  30. he can talk to you and so you can talk back to him.

  31. Prayer changes things. Prayer is never wasted time.

  32. Many things are wasted time. They really are.

  33. But prayer is never wasted time. And prayer sows seeds that are

  34. always remembered. And here in Matthew's Gospel,

  35. Jesus reveals to us the Father's pattern of prayer.

  36. I don't think it's the only pattern.

  37. I think there are many patterns. But here is a pattern that is so

  38. helpful to help us to pray. And I think if you outwork this

  39. pattern that I'm going to look at briefly here, it'll change

  40. your life because connection with the Father in prayer can be

  41. and should be and could be and will be, if you take that step,

  42. the most precious moments of your life, the rhythm of this

  43. can help you get closer to Him. So I want to encourage you.

  44. I'm going to give you 7 statements.

  45. I want to encourage you to make a note of all of them and to

  46. practise it in prayer. I did this this morning.

  47. I found it so powerful in my own devotions.

  48. So write these 7 phrases down. The first one is this, the

  49. Father's presence, our Father in heaven, our Father in heaven.

  50. This is so personal and so powerful because God could have

  51. revealed himself to you in many ways.

  52. He could have come as a dictator, He could have come as

  53. Lord commanding you, but here rather he came as a father.

  54. My natural father was Peter Hind.

  55. He was a lovely man, a teacher, a lover of books and he read 3

  56. or 4 books every week of as long as I knew him and he carried a

  57. wonderful bass voice. If he was in this room you would

  58. hear him singing. He was a follower of Jesus and

  59. if he was alive today, this year he would have been 100 years

  60. old, my dad, and he's now in heaven.

  61. I'm grateful for him and what he brought to my life.

  62. But as a Jesus follower, God the perfect Father has become my

  63. heavenly Father. And it's true of you if you know

  64. Jesus, the perfect Father without blemish, who never

  65. disappoints. And as we come to communicate to

  66. him, he's near. His presence is near.

  67. And the Father's pattern for prayer stops in his presence.

  68. Our Father in heaven, we are to be still in his presence, to

  69. stop, to stop. Do you find that your thoughts?

  70. Do you find sometimes when you stop to pray, it's like there is

  71. a merry go round going on in your head?

  72. So many thoughts. The things that I can remember

  73. that I've forgotten to do when I stop to pray is utterly amazing.

  74. In fact, if you've forgotten anything and you need to

  75. remember, just stop to pray. It'll come back to mind as a

  76. distraction. Write it down and keep going.

  77. We are to be still. We come before our Daddy in the

  78. heavens and we pause and we welcome His presence.

  79. And you know you can do that anytime.

  80. You can be sat at your desk at work.

  81. You can be waiting in a queue at the checkout.

  82. You can be in front of your classroom.

  83. You can be sat with your friends taking a lesson.

  84. You can just stop and go. Our Father, my Father in heaven,

  85. why don't you just do that? Now?

  86. If it helps you to close your eyes, just do that and pause and

  87. stop and just say quietly, My Father in heaven, our Father in

  88. heaven. This is the Father's pattern for

  89. prayer. Write this down the second

  90. phrase, the Father's praise, hallowed, hallowed, be your

  91. name. It means to give Him first the

  92. unique place that He deserves unconditional praise.

  93. We can speak praise. We can sing praise.

  94. We can shout praise. We can think praise.

  95. We can write praise. We can read a Psalm of praise.

  96. In it all we give thanks. Praise to give thanks.

  97. You know, a thankful heart is a praising heart.

  98. A thankful heart is a contented heart.

  99. It's a blessed heart. It's another centred heart.

  100. A thankful heart is a compelling heart in others.

  101. When you meet them, you can tell if someone's thankful, usually

  102. in the first two or three minutes, because if they aren't,

  103. they'll tell you something that's wrong.

  104. They'll tell you something that's they're not happy with

  105. all that. It's difficult, but someone

  106. who's thankful, it just comes out of them.

  107. Every year there are two newsletters I love from two of

  108. the most senior people in our church.

  109. And I read that I look forward to their newsletters.

  110. And it comes in the first one from this lady, full of her

  111. thanks for Jesus, full of her thanks for salvation, full of

  112. her thanks for another year, full of her thanks in life.

  113. And then I read the other one from a gentleman who's the

  114. oldest man in our church. And he said this and talking

  115. about the sight he's in, he said the highlight of every week of

  116. my life is going to. And he names one of our sites

  117. and being part of the worship there.

  118. I just, I just thank for hearts. I love it.

  119. Set your heart to praise him and to be thankful.

  120. Honestly, say thank you for 10 things.

  121. You'll feel better. You will grumble about 10.

  122. You won't. We all have nothing to complain

  123. about and everything to be grateful for.

  124. Last year in your life, look what the Lord did.

  125. Last year in this house, look what the Lord did.

  126. The Father's pattern for prayer starts with praise.

  127. Why don't you do it now? Think in your head.

  128. Let some thought of thought come into your mind.

  129. Hallowed be your name. Think it, speak it out loud.

  130. Hallowed be your name, Say it now, be thankful, Hallowed be

  131. your name. This is the Father's pattern for

  132. prayer, the Father's presence, the Father's praise.

  133. Thirdly, the Father's power. Your Kingdom come, your will be

  134. done on earth as it is in heaven.

  135. Other times when you don't know what to do, when you've got no

  136. answers. We were very well planned for

  137. our New Year's Eve celebration this year because the previous

  138. year took us a little bit by surprise with how many people

  139. came. So this year you had to book in,

  140. you had to reserve a ticket. I was amazed how many of you

  141. didn't reserve a ticket but still turned up.

  142. Hopefully next year you'll realise that we'll say you can't

  143. come in. But we managed to squeeze

  144. everyone into this hall and I felt so much more contented

  145. because it was not chaos. We were could breathe and meet

  146. with him. But sometimes, other times, when

  147. you don't know what to do, this truth is a gift to heaven for

  148. us. It invites His authority who He

  149. is. Remember who He is, all the

  150. galaxies to invite His authority into every moment of my life.

  151. It reminds us that He's in charge.

  152. Whatever's happening, He has all the answers, and He always has

  153. the final say to pray like this. The Father's power invites His

  154. authority and His Kingdom into every situation that we face.

  155. We can get wisdom from a doctor, advice from a pastor, help from

  156. a friend. We can get information from the

  157. from Google, but authority from God in that situation is more

  158. significant. Alongside all of those is more

  159. significant here on earth as it is in heaven.

  160. Our lives can be cluttered, can't they?

  161. They can feel foggy, unclear moments of what's this left

  162. field things that happen. And then we look at our world as

  163. we start this year. We see again sadness and

  164. brokenness and disaster and conflict.

  165. Never forget above this realm that we live in the spiritual

  166. pressure above it. Above it He lives and everything

  167. is alright and secure and serene.

  168. And one day we will be with him in that realm.

  169. And we are praying that that realm will come to this realm.

  170. To pray like this brings the fullness of who He is into your

  171. situation. And it starts with us, Lord, I

  172. invite you, Father, to be Lord of me, Your Kingdom come in me.

  173. And then it's my family, my children, grandchildren, if

  174. we're married, our husbands, our wives, it's to invite His rule

  175. in them and over them. And then our street, your

  176. church. I invite you and all that you

  177. are into every part of this house situations you're facing.

  178. I invite your rule into every situation.

  179. You have the last words. And for our city, we're inviting

  180. his name and His rule and His will into Leicester and

  181. Loughborough and beyond that he would get the glory.

  182. Why don't you do that right now? Think of your life, pause, think

  183. your mind, your health, your well-being.

  184. Just say over yourself, your Kingdom come, your will be done,

  185. do it now. Think of your family, some of

  186. your hearts are aching just thinking.

  187. Just speak these words, The Father's power, your Kingdom

  188. come, your will be done over my family.

  189. Go and do it now. Your street come picture your

  190. neighbours, your Kingdom come, your will be done.

  191. May this be the year my neighbours come to Christ, the

  192. church, every situation. This is the Father's pattern for

  193. prayer. Write this one down.

  194. The Father's provision. Give us today Our Daily Bread.

  195. All of us in the room are different.

  196. Ones of us receive income from a job or benefits or grants or

  197. pension income or gifts or resources.

  198. But He is our source to thank Him for every part of your life

  199. and go through every moment trusting Him and giving Him your

  200. needs. There is a difference between

  201. our wants and our needs. Occasionally God loves us so

  202. much that our wants become a reality, but not always.

  203. And that's all right. The Bible is so powerful to

  204. quote for the provision of everything you need for food.

  205. He's your sustainer, Don't worry, saying what shall we eat,

  206. What shall we drink, what shall we wear?

  207. Oh, how many of us spend time with that when you're fasting

  208. and when we fast, we're not. We don't go in our little gym at

  209. home. I can't believe how much time we

  210. have because we spend a lot of time.

  211. Susan says she spends a lot of time preparing menus.

  212. I'm so grateful that she's the cook in our house, preparing

  213. menus, shopping for menus, eating the food, doing the

  214. exercise. You've all of a sudden got all

  215. this time now. I know you say our children are

  216. not at home anymore, so I just want to acknowledge that because

  217. my son says, you know, it's all right for you.

  218. I've cooked three meals today Dad, whilst you're fasting, so I

  219. have to remember that. But seek for us the Kingdom and

  220. his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as

  221. well. Provision, the Father's

  222. provision in finance. Honour the Lord with your

  223. wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops, and then your

  224. barns will be filled to overflowing and your vats will

  225. bring over with new wine. With all the wisdom you need, my

  226. son, don't let wisdom and understanding out of your sight.

  227. Preserve judgement, discretion. They will be life to you.

  228. Courage. Have I not commanded you?

  229. It's your boldness. Be strong and courageous.

  230. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged.

  231. This is his provision. He's with you wherever you go.

  232. The grace you need, the patience you need.

  233. He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power

  234. is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I boast.

  235. Wow, almost gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ's

  236. power may rest in you. What about the love you need the

  237. Father's provision. The Lord appeared to us in the

  238. past and said I've loved you with an everlasting love.

  239. I've drawn you. I love this with unfailing

  240. kindness, the unfailing kindness of God to you.

  241. People want to make God out to be mean and a dictator and

  242. distance, but He is unfailing in His kindness towards you,

  243. constant kindness. What about guidance, the map for

  244. your life, the provision you need?

  245. Turn to the left, turn to the right.

  246. You'll hear a voice behind you saying this is the way.

  247. Walk in it. He gives us Our Daily Bread.

  248. Share it with others every day. Carry this bread.

  249. Just pause for a moment because there'll be one of those phrases

  250. I've said that's very paramount in your life, and just say this

  251. thank you that you will give me today, my daily bread, my daily

  252. bread, my daily bread. I trust you for everything.

  253. This is the Father's pattern for prayer.

  254. I love this, the Father's pardon, who forgives all our

  255. sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

  256. Confession is so important. Many of us are in danger at

  257. times of cursing ourselves by our confession.

  258. I'm useless, I'm rubbish. I should have, should have,

  259. should have. I love the phrase an old nun

  260. wrote in a picture above her bed that just said this today.

  261. I will not should on myself. I like that.

  262. Do you catch? I should have, I should have.

  263. That's just living in next time I will but thank you that you

  264. love me in the middle of it anyway.

  265. Confession over yourself. Stop confessing negativity over

  266. yourself. I am loved.

  267. I am beautiful in his sight and the right me that he's made and

  268. he has a plan for me. But here he says the Father's

  269. pardon to confess your sins within that a charismatic

  270. stream. We're not always very good at at

  271. confession. We've pulled a long way away

  272. from sitting with the priest in a box next to us and and

  273. confessing our sins. But there's some principles in

  274. that which we miss out because confessing our sins is

  275. important. Forgive us our sins, confession

  276. a daily journey. And sometimes there is a need to

  277. confess your sins to another because you need the help and

  278. the accountability to not just keep saying sorry, but to change

  279. and remember this. There's nothing in your life, no

  280. hidden addiction, no no, no secret thing in your life, no

  281. habit pattern that you can't be free of.

  282. In the name of Jesus, remember there's nothing, nothing that

  283. can hold you that you can't get free of this year.

  284. But we confess, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin

  285. against us. We choose to release mercy to

  286. anyone who's hurt us. I just sat and thought about

  287. that this morning. I could not think of anyone this

  288. morning. Maybe by tonight there'll be

  289. somebody. But there was, there was nobody

  290. this morning. I thought, Lord, that's a great

  291. start to a year. Release Mercy to those who've

  292. hurt you, a gift they may not deserve, but you received a gift

  293. you didn't deserve. Release and now refuse to carry

  294. the weight of that pain because you're never defined by what has

  295. happened to you or by what your family was or the mistakes

  296. others made around you. You are defined by His grace and

  297. kindness and forgiveness over your life.

  298. That's the grace of the gospel. How do we do some work now?

  299. Is there a sin you just need to quietly confess to the Lord?

  300. Do it now because His grace is in this room.

  301. Is there someone you need to forgive?

  302. Did someone upset you over Christmas?

  303. Was a brother or sister unnecessarily antagonistic?

  304. Go on, give them a gift they may not deserve.

  305. Forgive them because they sue your brother and sister.

  306. This is the Father's pattern for prayer.

  307. These are Jesus words, the Father's protection.

  308. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil. 1 Does

  309. this mean we'll never face temptation?

  310. It does not. It doesn't.

  311. Wouldn't it be great? It'd be great if certain things,

  312. when you, Lord, come into my life and all of a sudden that

  313. you were never tempted with anything ever again.

  314. It'd be wonderful, but it is not going to happen.

  315. But here's the promise from God that when you attempted, when

  316. you attempted, He's faithful and He will provide a way out so

  317. that you can endure it. Every time you are tempted, He

  318. gives you a way out. It's a choice every time.

  319. Sometimes you have to run. Sometimes you have to shout that

  320. you're not going to do something.

  321. Sometimes you decide, but there's always a way out.

  322. When we face challenges, He's with us.

  323. I love this. You know, people write the

  324. gospel. You know, it's all lovely.

  325. It's all delight. It's all just Jesus and love.

  326. But the Bible says this. When you pass through the

  327. waters, I'll be with you. When you pass through the rivers

  328. that won't sweep over you, when you walk through the fire, you

  329. won't be burned, for I am with you.

  330. We face suffering. Paul writes this.

  331. It has been granted to you. Thank you on behalf of Christ,

  332. not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him.

  333. I don't like that part of the Bible.

  334. You say we face suffering, but listen, He walks with us in it,

  335. in it all, the Father's pattern encourages us to ask for and

  336. receive protection from the evil one, to ask for and receive

  337. protection from our own failings, and to ask for and

  338. receive strength to resist temptation.

  339. We're invited this morning, this beautiful invitation from the

  340. Father to hide in him, to put on his armour and take our stand

  341. right now. Invite his protection.

  342. Some of us, in this first gathering, our minds have been

  343. going where they shouldn't right now.

  344. You're going to bring them back in line.

  345. We have the mind of Christ. This is the Bible.

  346. Invite His protection over your mind.

  347. We do not have to make the mistakes our friends have made.

  348. We do not need to fear hereditary sickness coming down

  349. to us. Perhaps you had a loved one die

  350. young. That doesn't mean that is the

  351. definition of your life. Invite His protection and do

  352. this. Just appropriate the power of

  353. the blood of Jesus over your life.

  354. In fact, why not say those words?

  355. I appropriate the protection of the blood of Jesus over my life.

  356. This is the Father's pattern of prayer.

  357. Let's go through these points really quickly here.

  358. Firstly, the Father's presence, our Father in heaven.

  359. Let's say that together. The Father's presence, come on,

  360. the Father's presence, our Father in heaven.

  361. Next, the Father's praise, hallowed be your name.

  362. Next, the Father's power, your Kingdom come, Your will be done

  363. on earth as it is in heaven. Next, Father's provision, give

  364. us today Our Daily Bread. Next, Father's pardon, forgive

  365. us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

  366. Next, Father's protection and lead us not into temptation, but

  367. deliver us from the evil. Honestly, tomorrow morning, get

  368. out of bed 10 minutes early than you have been doing.

  369. Set your alarm a bit earlier. Sometimes our alarm goes off.

  370. I wonder why on earth is happening in my life and you can

  371. only snooze it 12 times before you're late.

  372. Get up, open a Psalm of thanks and then pray.

  373. Through this I invite your presence, Father, I hallow your

  374. name and praise you. I invite your power into every

  375. area of my life. Thank You that you'll provide

  376. all I need through your daily bread.

  377. Forgive me for my sin. I release again those who've

  378. hurt me and protect me and my family, leading us not into

  379. temptation, delivering us from the evil. 1 and lastly, the

  380. Father's purpose for yours. This is in the footnote of many

  381. Bibles, but it's in the prayer that we pray so often for yours.

  382. Yours is the Kingdom and yours is the power, and yours is the

  383. glory. Forever and ever.

  384. Gone say those 3 words when I get there with a bit of bit of

  385. energy. For yours is the, the and the

  386. forever and ever. Amen.

  387. His Lordship, His power, His glory to be demonstrated in us.

  388. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus said it like this.

  389. He says this is how you should pray.

  390. This is how you should pray. Give this a go and I guarantee

  391. your life will change because it's Jesus words.

  392. Let's say the Lord's Prayer together.

  393. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name, your

  394. Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  395. Give us this day Our Daily Bread, and forgive us our sins,

  396. as we forgive those who sin against us and lead us not into

  397. temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  398. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever

  399. and ever. Amen.

  400. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine

  401. upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his face towards

  402. you and give you peace.
