  108. [music]

  109. >> who's excited to be here for Christmas

  110. services this morning.

  111. Merry Christmas to everybody here. We're

  112. so excited for what we have prepared for

  113. you today because we don't take anything

  114. half-hearted around here. I was talking

  115. to the team earlier. We bring our best

  116. and let God do the rest. And you know,

  117. Miles and I were looking at the run

  118. sheet earlier before and we saw that a

  119. lot of this team have been here by 5:00

  120. a.m. So, can we just thank this amazing

  121. team?

  122. They're phenomenal.

  123. I don't know if you know, but we are in

  124. the series Christmas. It's Christmas

  125. celebration, but we're doing home for

  126. Christmas. And is it if this is your

  127. first time here, we would like to

  128. welcome you. We're thankful that you

  129. took the time for this Christmas season

  130. to come to our church. And we want to

  131. welcome you home.

  132. Let's welcome everybody that's new. Hey,

  133. if you are new and you'd like to know

  134. more about what we have going on in the

  135. life of this church, you can get this

  136. hello card that's in the seat back in

  137. front of you. Fill it out and pop it in

  138. a red spot. We also have something, a

  139. prayer and praise report card. This time

  140. can be hard for a lot of people. Perhaps

  141. you're in need of food, shelter, or

  142. clothing or prayer for something. Please

  143. fill that out so that we as a team can

  144. contact you and help you any way that we

  145. can. Also, if you're new today, we have

  146. a special gift for you. My husband's

  147. holding it right here.

  148. >> I like this gift. It's got a little bble

  149. to put on your tree and uh it says

  150. planted. And our heart is that you would

  151. be planted in the house of the Lord. And

  152. our prayer is that it'll be here. Keep

  153. coming to this church, meet people, love

  154. the Lord, his presence, his power, and

  155. see your life changed as you planted.

  156. So, grab one of these at the Connect Hub

  157. after the service. And and I'd love to

  158. say hi, and Bonnie would too, just to

  159. know you and your story. We're very

  160. honored that you're here with us today.

  161. >> The verse that is resonating for us as a

  162. church is found in Ephesians 3:17. It

    Ephesians 3:17

  163. says, "So that Christ may dwell in your

  164. hearts through faith." And that's our

  165. prayer that not only did God send his

  166. son into this world, he also sent him

  167. for of for us as well. And so our prayer

  168. as we sing and worship him is that you

  169. sense the Holy Spirit personally in your

  170. life this morning.

  171. >> Now Christmas at Elevation, it's more

  172. than just coming to church. It's more

  173. than just coming to a celebration

  174. service. It's about going and taking the

  175. good news to the world. at elevation all

  176. six locations over,200

  177. gifts have been given to those less

  178. fortunate than us. That's what we're

  179. here for to make a difference and extend

  180. the kingdom. Please be seated as you

  181. look at the screen and see the great

  182. work that has been done through your

  183. generosity.

  184. >> Hi Elevation, thank you so much for your

  185. generosity. We are just wrapping up

  186. here, pardon the pun, for our stack the

  187. slay 2025. Uh we partner with the

  188. Salvation Army, Majuba Special School,

  189. Yahweh House, and the Pregnancy Support

  190. Center. And we're bagging the last of

  191. the gifts today here at Melbourne West.

  192. We are continuing our partnership with

  193. Helping Hands Mission. This year, we

  194. want to give 200 gifts so that children

  195. might wake up at Christmas and find a

  196. present under the Christmas tree. Thank

  197. you for your generosity. You're making a

  198. difference in Melbourne's West. So guys,

  199. we're so excited for this time of year

  200. with Stack the Slay here at Penri. We

  201. are so proud and fortunate to be working

  202. with the Penri Community Kitchen. The

  203. guys do amazing work from providing

  204. meals to families to getting into

  205. schools and providing meals for the kids

  206. um at the school setup and then also

  207. just bringing the joy of Christmas

  208. together and providing Christmas meals

  209. and lunches together for the community

  210. as well. [music] Here in elevation

  211. manager, we've partnered with Operation

  212. Christmas Child and have filled 196 of

  213. these boxes which go to underprivileged

  214. children across the world. What a great

  215. joy it is to partner with those who are

  216. doing it tough this Christmas and bring

  217. the love of Christ to their lives. This

  218. year at Elevation Cans, we have

  219. partnered again with Mission Australia

  220. for our stack the sleigh campaign. As

  221. you can see, the sleigh is filling up

  222. with tons and tons of gifts. We know

  223. it's going to impact hundreds of

  224. families right around our community that

  225. are doing it tough this Christmas time

  226. to bring some hope and some joy to them.

  227. We're also going to be giving away a or

  228. making a large donation to Mission

  229. Australia as well to just help them at

  230. this tough time to make sure they can

  231. meet the needs of people.

  232. >> This Christmas we are partnering with

  233. Wesley Mission to bring over 200 gifts

  234. to many children in our community who

  235. are vulnerable this Christmas. We also

  236. get to give over 50 campers in our local

  237. community. We have to go into our

  238. workplaces, neighbors, friends and

  239. family and show them the love that we

  240. can give this Christmas season.

  241. >> Thank you so much for your generosity.

  242. Your giving makes a difference in the

  243. lives of hundreds of families. Thank you

  244. so much. We are praying that you also

  245. have a very merry Christmas.

  246. >> Yeah. So good. Now, I don't have

  247. favorites, but Hills was my favorite

  248. because we we didn't give 200 gifts. We

  249. didn't give 300 gifts. Over 400 gifts we

  250. gave away because of your generosity.

  251. Thank you humbly. It's wonderful. At

  252. Elevation, one of our values is fun. We

  253. like to fun it up. That's why we got Jif

  254. with his hat on. We love fun. And uh it

  255. wouldn't be a year of Christmas at

  256. Elevation without

  257. >> the Jingles.

  258. >> Have a look.

  259. Going to church to spread some

  260. Christmasing

  261. together.

  263. Oh no. Oh no.

  264. Um um our Christmas chariot of tear just

  265. broke down.

  266. >> Santa's going to lose his mind.

  267. >> Santa's going to kick us out of the

  268. North Pole.

  269. We're going to be the biggest

  270. embarrassment to all elf kind.

  271. >> Oh no. Quick, we got to do something.

  272. Anything. Go, go, go.

  273. >> [screaming]

  274. >> Christmas.

  275. >> Hello, Mr. Engine.

  276. >> We wish you a merry Christmas and a

  277. happy new year.

  278. >> I don't get it. None of our Christmas

  279. elf training is working. All the

  280. singing, dancing, and Christmas

  281. enhancing

  282. just not working.

  283. >> If we don't get to elevation jar,

  284. I fear

  285. that we might not be elves by the end of

  286. the year.

  287. We'll [crying] be cast out.

  300. Send the big guns.

  301. The Junior Jingles. [screaming]

  302. >> Wait a second. How will the Junior

  304. >> No.

  305. [screaming]

  306. >> Hang on a second. I have an idea.

  307. >> What?

  308. We need to

  309. >> tell me. We need to break the fourth

  310. wall.

  311. The fourth wall.

  312. Hello.

  313. Are you home?

  314. >> Hi. Hello. If you can hear us, I want

  315. you to say Merry Christmas.

  316. >> Merry Christmas. [screaming]

  317. >> It's definitely working.

  318. >> It's working. Oh my goodness. We are

  319. going to send the junior jingles to you.

  320. to.

  321. >> We're using elf echolocation for them to

  322. find

  432. >> Rejoice,

  434. Emmanuel [music]

  435. [singing]

  436. shall come to thee, oh

  437. [singing]

  438. [snorts]

  439. 700 Years before the birth of Christ,

  440. the prophet Isaiah spoke these words.

  441. The people who walked in darkness have

  442. seen a great light.

  443. Those who dwelt in a land of deep

  444. darkness.

  445. On them has light shone.

  446. For to us a child is born.

  447. To us a son is given.

  448. And the government shall be upon his

  449. shoulder, and his name shall be called

  450. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

  451. Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  452. Behold,

  453. the virgin shall conceive and bear a

  454. son,

  455. and shall call his name Emmanuel.

  456. And then at the appointed time,

  457. the promise began to unfold.

  458. >> The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a

  459. virgin betrothed to a man whose name was

  460. Joseph of the house of David.

  461. And the virgin's name was Mary.

  462. And he came to her and said, "Greetings,

  463. old favored one.

  464. The Lord is with you."

  465. But she was greatly troubled at the

  466. saying and tried to discern what sort of

  467. greeting this would be.

  468. So the angel said to her, "Do not be

  469. afraid, Mary, for you have found favor

  470. with God.

  471. Behold, you will conceive in your womb

  472. and bear a son, and you shall call his

  473. name Jesus.

  474. 700 years before.

  475. Oh little town of Bethlehem,

  476. how still we see the light

  477. above thy [singing] deep and dreamless

  478. sleep. The silent [singing] stars go by,

  479. yet in the dark [music and singing]

  480. streets shine,

  481. the everlasting

  482. [singing] light.

  483. The hopes and fears of all the years

  484. [singing] are met in thee tonight.

  485. Oh holy child of Bethlehem,

  486. descend to [singing] us [music] we pray.

  487. Cast out our sin and enter.

  488. Be born in [singing] us today.

  489. We hear the [singing] Christmas angels,

  490. the [music] great glad [singing] tidings

  491. tell.

  492. Oh come [singing] to us, abide with us,

  493. oh Lord Emmanuel.

  494. Oh come to us, abide with [singing] us.

  495. The Lord Emmanuel.

  496. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place

  497. in this way.

  498. When his mother Mary had been betrothed

  499. to Joseph,

  500. before they came together, she was found

  501. to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

  502. And her husband Joseph being a just man

  503. and unwilling to put her to shame,

  504. resolved to divorce her quietly.

  505. But as he considered these things,

  506. behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to

  507. him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of

  508. David,

  509. do not fear to take Mary as your wife,

  510. for that which is conceived in her is

  511. from the Holy Spirit.

  512. She will bear a son,

  513. and you shall call his name Jesus,

  514. for he will save his people from their

  515. sins."

  516. In [music] those days, Caesar Augustus

  517. issued a decree that a census should be

  518. taken of the entire Roman world. [music]

  519. And everyone went to their own town to

  520. register.

  521. And Joseph also went up from Galilee to

  522. the city of David, which is called

  523. Bethlehem,

  524. because he was of the house and line of

  525. David,

  526. to be registered with Mary, his

  527. betrothed,

  528. who was with child.

  529. While they were there, the time came for

  530. her to give birth.

  531. And she gave birth to her firstborn son

  532. and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and

  533. laid him in a manger because there was

  534. no place for them in the end.

  535. And in the same region there were

  536. shepherds out in the field keeping watch

  537. over their flock by night.

  538. And an angel of the Lord appeared to

  539. them, and the glory of the Lord shone

  540. around them, and they were filled with

  541. fear.

  542. The angel said to them,

  543. "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good

  544. news of great joy that will be for all

  545. people.

  546. For unto you is born this day in the

  547. city of David a Savior,

  548. who is Christ the Lord,

  549. and this will be a sign for you. You

  657. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of

  658. Judea in the days of Herod the king,

  659. Behold wise men from the east came to

  660. Jerusalem, saying,

  661. "Where is he who has been born king of

  662. the Jews?

  663. For we saw his star when it rose, and

  664. have come to worship him.

  665. When Herod the king heard this, he was

  666. troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

  667. And assembling all the chief priests and

  668. scribes of the people, he inquired of

  669. them where the Christ was to be born.

  670. They told him in Bethlehem of Judea,

  671. for so it is written by the prophet,

  672. "And you, oh Bethlehem

  673. in the land of Judah,

  674. are by no means least among the rulers

  675. of Judah.

  676. For from you shall come a ruler

  677. who will shepherd my people Israel.

  678. >> [music]

  679. >> Then Herod summoned the wise men

  680. secretly and ascertained from them what

  681. time the star had appeared.

  682. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying,

  683. "Go and search diligently for the

  684. child."

  685. And when you have found him, bring me

  686. word

  687. that I too may come and worship him."

  688. After listening to the king, they went

  689. on their way.

  690. And behold, the star they had seen when

  691. it rose went before them, until it came

  692. to rest over the place where the child

  693. was.

  694. When they saw the star, they rejoiced

  695. exceedingly with great joy.

  696. And going into the house, they saw the

  697. child with Mary, his mother,

  698. and they fell down and worshiped him.

  763. [singing]

  764. [music]

  765. Can we thank Joseph and Mary? Come on,

  766. make some noise for Joseph and Mary. How

  767. about the angels? You're amazing. What

  768. about the shepherds? Go the shepherds.

  769. If you have your Bibles with you today,

  770. uh please turn to Luke 15 verse 11. This

    Luke 15:11

  771. parable we're going to share together

  772. really captures the heart of the father

  773. and captures the heart of Christmas.

  774. It's a powerful parable that reveals who

  775. our God in heaven is. If you're new to

  776. church, a parable is simply a short

  777. story that carries a powerful spiritual

  778. truth. And this parable was the

  779. inspiration for the whole four-week

  780. series of our Come Home for Christmas

  781. and the artwork that you see behind me.

  782. Uh does anybody know what the parable is

  783. yet? Let me give you a hint that there's

  784. a a house on a hill and and I love that

  785. it's a Queenslander and it's not some

  786. snowy building in America. I Oh, we're

  787. Aussies, right? And uh the I I I I you

  788. know, I've seen this picture for many

  789. weeks now as I'm in church multiple

  790. times and I I start my mind wanders and

  791. I'm like, how many people drove up and

  792. down that driveway to create the ruts?

  793. How many visitors, family members, how

  794. many people went to that home? Then I'm

  795. thinking, I wonder if they get Uber Eats

  796. out there. Do you think Uber would get

  797. out there and is NBN there? And maybe

  798. they got to go Starlink. And man,

  799. there's some firewood cuz I got two

  800. fire. I'm I'm just I'm my mind is just

  801. it's I'm I got a problem, right? You got

  802. to help me and pray for me. And and but

  803. this image is central to the theme of

  804. Christmas

  805. because this parable is about a father

  806. looking for his son.

  807. Does anybody know what it is? Kids,

  808. anyone know what it is? About a dad, two

  809. sons? Anyone? Anyone kids? It's the

  810. parable of the prodal son.

  811. There's a story of a son who left home

  812. and a son who stayed at home and a

  813. father who longed for both to return. At

  814. Christmas, we're reminded that God sent

  815. his son to seek and to save the lost, to

  816. reach you and I. Because all of us,

  817. we're born with this longing for love,

  818. longing for acceptance, longing to

  819. belong, to be respected, to be valued.

  820. We're born with this. And the world

  821. tries to fill it, but it doesn't satisfy

  822. only God through relationship with Jesus

  823. Christ. And maybe today you're lonely.

  824. You You're kind of homeless in your

  825. heart. You say, "Mos, I don't have a

  826. home. I I don't have a place I belong. I

  827. don't have a place I feel respected and

  828. and cared for and valued with a hope of

  829. the gospel and this parable is that God

  830. wants everyone to come home today. Luke

    Luke 15:11

  831. 15:11 Jesus continued, "There was a man,

  832. two sons." The younger one said,

  833. "Father, give me my share of the

  834. estate." So, he divided his property

  835. between them. Now, there's a recent

  836. trend I've heard. It's about early

  837. inheritance. It's where parents will

  838. give their children their inheritance in

  839. their 30s and 40s rather than wait till

  840. they die and pass on and receive it in

  841. their 60s and 70s. Really not not a bad

  842. idea. Now, I don't want you going to

  843. your parents and saying, "Pastor Miles

  844. said, I need my inheritance early. I I

  845. want show me the money. Let me this this

  846. is not about your inheritance. This is a

  847. bigger picture that that we're got I

  848. always wonder about my kids. But I feel

  849. bad for them because five kids, they

  850. only get 20% each and so they they they

  851. don't get as much as say a single kid

  852. that gets 100%. But anyway, that's just

  853. the the reality of having multiple kids.

  854. But the days of Jesus, an early

  855. inheritance

  856. was basically saying to your parents, I

  857. wish you were dead.

  858. It was an act of rebellion

  859. and rejection. You see, the son didn't

  860. walk away just from the home. He walked

  861. away from a relationship with his dad.

  862. Luke 13 15:13 continues, "A few days a

  863. later, the son packed up his belongings

  864. and moved to a distant land and he

  865. wasted

  866. all his money in wild living." The word

  867. prodal comes from the Latin word uh

  868. progus and and it means to be wasteful.

  869. And we all have a bit of prodal in us,

  870. don't we? We can all be wasteful. We can

  871. all pout. We can all get upset with our

  872. God. We can drift. We can not realize

  873. the great things that our father in

  874. heaven has. We can be impatient. We can

  875. be demanding.

  876. We We can be entitled. We can throw a

  877. pity party. So even though I'm a pastor,

  878. something I do, it's not who I am. I I I

  879. can be like this. I I can find myself

  880. kind of angry with God for not doing

  881. enough. The other day I had my son's car

  882. and he gave it to me on empty and it

  883. broke down on the side of the road. I

  884. had 1% left on my phone and I used it to

  885. call RACQ only to find out I didn't have

  886. roadside assistance. And I'm like, I'm

  887. pouting. I'm like, God, I'm a man of the

  888. cloth. I I'm pastoring your sheep and

  889. and I'm doing the work for the Lord. How

  890. can this happen? It's not right. It's

  891. not fair. Don't you know I'm preparing a

  892. sermon? Don't you know I I went to the

  893. prayer? Don't you know, God, I tithe?

  894. Don't you know I I gave a gift at Stack

  895. the Slay? I even handed out an invite

  896. card. How dare you let me suffer? And we

  897. can find ourselves being rebellious,

  898. ungrateful, kind of mad at our God. It

  899. really comes down to self-centered. And

  900. so the story continues. The son went on

  901. a far off country and spent his wealth

  902. and wild living. Wasn't long before he's

  903. broke, alone,

  904. empty, and hungry. And he considered

  905. eating the food that was he was giving

  906. to the pigs as his job as a farmer's

  907. hand. Think about that. Think about your

  908. scraps that are in that green wheelie

  909. bin for a week. Think about opening it

  910. up and thinking that's all you've got to

  911. eat. These were desperate times. And he

  912. suddenly realized something. [snorts]

  913. And this is where the most powerful

  914. scripture

  915. comes to light. Th this to me is the

  916. heart of God, the heart of the prodical

  917. son, the heart of the story and and the

  918. heart for you and me to embrace today.

  919. Luke 15:17, when he came to his senses,

    Luke 15:17

  920. when he came to his senses, that's what

  921. happens when the spirit of the Lord

  922. stirs someone's heart. When there's a

  923. longing for home, when there's a desire

  924. for meaning, for love, when there's a

  925. searching for more, when Christmas comes

  926. and you realize, oh, I may not be where

  927. I should be. This longing brings

  928. repentance and that's what changes our

  929. heart. It's the same for us. We can

  930. drift, be rebellious,

  931. we can be self-righteous.

  932. We can drift from God in our heart. And

  933. the way we come home to the Lord at

  934. Christmas is when we embrace the fact

  935. that we need to come to our senses. We

  936. need to come to our senses and we need

  937. to take inventory of our relationship

  938. with God. Do you have a relationship

  939. with God? How was your conversation

  940. today? Are you spending time with him?

  941. Is God something you pursue or you just

  942. wait for him to chase you?

  943. Some of you need to repent today. Some

  944. of you need to come to your senses and

  945. say, "God, I haven't been living the way

  946. you want me to. I've been in church, but

  947. my heart is far from you." Suddenly, the

  948. son realizes, "What on earth am I doing

  949. here? Eating the scraps to these pigs."

  950. He saw that and remembered that his

  951. servants are better off than this. So he

  952. decides to go home not because he

  953. deserves it, not because he earned it,

  954. but because he remembered what his

  955. father is like. So when we come to our

  956. senses, we then realize that there is a

  957. loving father who unconditionally

  958. welcomes us home. Not based on our good

  959. works, but at Christmas time, we can

  960. come home to a father who's longing to

  961. be with us. Some people think God is

  962. distant and angry and disappointed. But

  963. this story shows us what God is really

  964. like. He's a kind father looking out

  965. daily to see if you would come home. He

  966. doesn't lock the door. He doesn't demand

  967. things from you. Doesn't demand you to

  968. repay what you've lost or spent. He's a

  969. kind father that leaves the porch light

  970. on for you. And the son begins his

  971. journey home. Verse 20. While he was

  972. still a long way off, his father saw him

  973. and he was filled with what? Say that

  974. word with me. He was filled with

  975. compassion for him. And he ran to the

  976. sun. He threw his arms around him and

  977. kissed him. I want to talk about this

  978. word compassion. The original language

  979. was Greek in the New Testament. And this

  980. is more than just what we think the word

  981. compassion is. It it comes from the

  982. Greek word. I'll I'll tell you what it

  983. sounds like.

  984. >> There's no way I'm saying what that word

  985. is.

  986. And it means to be moved from your inner

  987. deepest area of your life, your inner

  988. boughs. And this Greek word was often

  989. used when Jesus would look out upon the

  990. multitudes and he would have compassion

  991. nemi that there's this yearning, a

  992. yearning, a a deep conviction.

  993. And that's who our God is. He's got this

  994. compassion, this deep love and

  995. conviction. What an image. And he proves

  996. this longing and yearning by running

  997. because he'd been watching and waiting

  998. and hoping. And before the son could

  999. give his well rehearsed speech or offer

1000. an apology or interest payment to get

1001. the money back, what does the father do?

  1002. He runs.

  1003. Now the

1004. culture of the Jewish in the Jewish days

1005. running for a older man was very

1006. unbecoming and older men would simply

1007. not run. They'd have to lift up their

1008. garments to be able to run. But that was

1009. his heart that the father didn't care

1010. about what he looked like. Didn't care

1011. about the embarrassment the son had

1012. brought to his family. didn't hold the

1013. shame up in the mirror and tell the son

1014. how bad he was. The father

  1015. runs unconditionally with compassion

1016. towards this son. It was undignified for

1017. an old man to run in Jewish culture, but

  1018. he did it because

  1019. compassion doesn't care about

  1020. appearances.

  1021. >> [snorts]

1022. >> Uh this this whole story was a real hard

1023. foreign concept for me to understand

1024. about my heavenly father because I would

1025. view my heavenly father through my

1026. earthly dad. My earthly dad, he didn't

1027. know Christ. He he wasn't a Christian.

1028. So I don't blame him. He didn't know any

1029. better. But we got divorced. My parents

1030. got divorced and mom moved my sister and

1031. I to the Gold Coast when I was about 14.

1032. And mom would put me on a bus, Macaffies

  1033. or

1034. Greyhound, whichever had the cheapest

1035. rate, single mom. And she would put me

1036. on a bus at 14 to visit my dad at school

1037. holidays. And it was like 14-hour trip

1038. in those days. I mean, you needed a

1039. tent, you needed a sleeping bag, you

1040. needed, you know, five C meals. It was a

1041. long trip. And I would get to Hornsby,

1042. which was the central bus station, and

1043. my dad was never there.

1044. And there would be a taxi to pick me up

1045. and the taxi would drive me to Avalon.

1046. By the way, the taxi costs more than the

1047. whole bus trip in 14 hours. And a young

1048. 14-year-old looking for his dad never

1049. showed up. He I I would get to his house

1050. and he wouldn't even be there. In fact,

1051. he would have a list of jobs

  1052. for me to do.

1053. And so to think that there is a father

1054. that looks for me and loves me was a

1055. really foreign concept for me. Some of

1056. you, you've had abusive dads.

1057. You've had dads that have taken

1058. advantage of you verbally, physically,

  1059. emotionally.

1060. And this can be a hard parable for us to

1061. realize that there is a loving father

1062. that shows compassion for you. But we

1063. can't let our life or or what man does

1064. to us stop us from understanding the

1065. greatness and the grace of our loving

  1066. God.

  1067. Maybe you're a parent today and you're a

1068. good parent and you did everything you

1069. could, but your child, your son, your

1070. daughter has run away and they're a

1071. prodal and you're hoping and you've been

1072. praying and decades have passed and they

  1073. still haven't come home.

  1074. I love this parable because it's a

1075. parable of hope. It's a parable of

1076. restoration. It's a parable that for the

1077. parent, they can keep trusting that

1078. their child will come back to the Lord.

1079. It's a parable where we as children who

1080. have run away can come back to the Lord.

1081. The parable reveals the heart of the

1082. father. That's the power of this

1083. parable. God is running to humanity and

1084. he reveals his heart at Christmas time

1085. when the word became flesh and Jesus

1086. made his home amongst us. He's still

1087. running to you today. He's running hard.

1088. 2,000 years he's still running to you.

1089. Next, the father turns to his servant

1090. says, "Quick, bring the best robe and

1091. put it on him. bring a ring on his

1092. finger and a sandal on his feet. This

1093. isn't just about forgiveness. This is

1094. about restoration. The robe speaks of

1095. honor. The ring speaks of authority. The

1096. sandals speak of freedom. The servants

1097. were barefooted, but the sons wore

1098. shoes. And the father says in verse 23,

1099. "Let us have a feast. Let us celebrate

1100. for the son of mine was dead

1101. and is alive again. That's what happened

1102. when someone's comes to the Lord through

1103. Jesus Christ and is saved. They were

1104. once dead and they come alive again. He

1105. was lost and he's found. The heart of

1106. your heavenly father isn't to scold you

1107. or to tell you I told you so or lecture

1108. you. No, no, no. His heart is to

1109. celebrate you, to love you, to throw a

1110. party. And that's the heartbeat of our

1111. church. It's the heartbeat of this

1112. series, Home for Christmas. It's more

1113. about returning to a place. It's about

  1114. returning to a person. That's God

1115. through Jesus Christ. Verse 23. If

1116. anyone will love me will obey my

  1117. teachings,

1118. my father will love them and will come

1119. to them and make our home with them.

1120. That's what God wants to do today in

1121. your life. He wants to make his home in

1122. your heart. For Bonnie and I, we love

1123. the local church. We grew up in the

1124. local church. It's where I found loving

  1125. spiritual fathers. It's where I found

1126. loving spiritual mothers and brothers

1127. and sisters. It's where we found each

1128. other and got married in a little

  1129. church. It's where we've raised our

1130. children, all five, all in church. And

1131. we value the local church because it's

1132. where God can reveal and show his love

1133. through others. We got a story, a

1134. testimony we want to show you of a whole

1135. family coming back to the Lord. Have a

  1136. look at the screen.

  1137. Hi, I'm Joe.

  1138. >> Hi, I'm Ben.

  1139. >> Hi, I'm Alissa.

  1140. >> Hi, I'm Angelica.

1141. >> We're the CHS family. I just needed to

1142. see my kids back in church. Brought them

1143. right through their lives going to

1144. church and then co hit and we it's all

  1145. stopped

1146. >> and my heart was just burning to have

1147. kids back in church. So, when the girls

1148. started coming, it was so exciting, you

1149. know. And then I saw them take the next

1150. one and the next one and I'm going,

1151. "Yes, thank you, Jesus. They're all

1152. going back to church. So, that really

1153. was special for me. You want your kids

1154. to to have a faith in God and to not

1155. just have a faith, but act out on that

  1156. faith.

1157. Very early on, we [music] got to witness

1158. baptisms at Elevation. It It was nothing

1159. like we had seen. We were so shocked to

1160. see so many people spontaneously being

1161. [music] baptized. Then, when the next

1162. round of baptisms came on the drive

1163. there, we go, "Oh, mom, you're going to

1164. you're going to spontaneously be

1165. baptized." And she's like, "I'm not not

1166. going to do that. And then next thing

1167. you know, she's looking at me and she's

1168. going, "I'm going to do it. I'm going to

1169. do it." And then, you know, we're me and

1170. mom are in the foyer getting towels and

1171. clothes and I see Ben coming out and I'm

1172. like, "Wait, what are you doing?" And

1173. he's like, "I'm going to get baptized."

1174. And then the next round of baptisms to

1175. come and you've got, you know, your

1176. nephew being baptized on his birthday

1177. and and your brother your brother

1178. baptizing your nephew and then next

1179. minute your sister's on stage and then

1180. Angie's on stage in board shorts. Um,

1181. >> it's it's crazy to see them all so

1182. confidently stand there and my my heart

1183. was just so full to see them boldly

1184. declare their love for Jesus, not only

1185. in front of their family, in front of

1186. their whole church to boldly do that.

1187. >> It was just so powerful. It's so

1188. beautiful knowing [music] that the kids

1189. have recommended themselves to the Lord

1190. and they're really, really doing it

1191. right this time. My biggest [music]

1192. prayer is that God will be real in their

1193. lives and that they will know the love

  1194. of Jesus.

1195. >> So good to see families actually was

1196. Bonnie and my prayer that this Christmas

1197. we would see entire families come to the

1198. Lord and see entire families come back

1199. to the Lord. The parable doesn't end

1200. with that one son. There's a second son.

1201. It's an older brother and he refuses to

1202. come to the celebration feast for the

  1203. younger brother. He's angry. He's

  1204. bitter. He's jealous. Could say he's

  1205. religious.

1206. His father said to him, "My son, you've

1207. always been with me and everything I

1208. have is yours." A lot of people miss

1209. this second [music] son. Because some of

1210. us are like him. There were two sons

1211. invited home. One from rebellion, the

1212. other from religion. God doesn't care

1213. about religion. Religion is works.

1214. Religion is what we do. God seeks a

1215. relationship. And maybe that's where

1216. you're at in this room today. You're

1217. you're you're like that second son. And

1218. you're in church, but you've closed your

1219. heart to the Lord. You're in church, but

  1220. you don't have a personal relationship

  1221. with him. You you've wandered. You've

1222. gone grown cold and and and and sort of

  1223. cynical in your heart.

1224. Will you come home today? I'd love to

1225. pray for two groups of people with your

  1226. eyes closed

1227. and your heads bowed. Firstly, you're

1228. that second son. You're in church, but

1229. you know it. You're far from God.

1230. Today's the day to come home, recommmit

1231. your life. Say, "God, I need you. I

  1232. repent. I come to my senses. You're a

1233. loving God, a good God." And I believe

1234. many people, this is a a call out to

1235. you. Would you respond? Would you

1236. respond? Would you would you come home?

1237. Would you come home? Secondly, I want to

1238. pray for those you've been running. Not

1239. literally, but in your heart. You're

1240. doing life on your own terms, and you

1241. feel empty and alone, tired, exhausted,

1242. far from God. And now is your time to

1243. come home. Why? Because the father's

1244. calling you with eyes closed and heads

1245. bowed. You want to pray this prayer. You

1246. want to make this decision for Jesus to

1247. be your Lord and your Savior. You want

1248. to make a decision to come home to the

1249. Lord for Christmas. You want to make a

1250. decision to open your heart, to come to

1251. your senses to say, "God, I need you.

1252. I'm sorry. I repent. Would you accept

1253. me?" Cuz he's coming for you, but you

1254. have to let him in. He stands at the

1255. door of your heart and knock. The Bible

1256. says, "Would you let him in? Would you

1257. come home today? Would you come home?

1258. Would you come home? Would you come

1259. home?" Eyes closed, heads bowed, that's

1260. you. On the count of three, would you

1261. boldly raise your hand and say, "Yeah,

1262. that's me. I want to come home." One,

1263. two, three. Raise them up high. I want

1264. to come home. Up the back there, I see

1265. your hand, sir. Others of you. Anyone

1266. else? Raise your hand. You want Jesus to

1267. be your Lord and your savior. Thank you.

1268. In the middle there, I see your hand

1269. down front, young man. I see your hand.

1270. Others, just boldly raise your hand. You

1271. want to come home. Thank you. I see your

1272. hand. Well done, young man. Others,

1273. boldly lift it up. This is why you're

1274. here. Come home to the Lord. He's

1275. calling you. He's longing. He wants you.

1276. He cares about you. Would you raise your

1277. hand? Say, "Yeah, Jesus, be my Lord. Be

1278. my savior. I want to come home."

1279. Thank you. I see your hand. Well done.

  1280. Four. Five. Others.

1281. Right over the side there. Six. Thank

1282. you. Well done. Others. Seven. Up the

1283. back there. Thank you. Anyone else?

1284. Raise your hand. Raise your hand. Let me

1285. see it. Let me see it. Come home. Come

1286. home. Yeah. See your hand. Yeah. Over

1287. there, sir. I see your hand. Well done.

  1288. Eight. N others.

1289. Others. Yep, [music] I see your hand.

1290. Thank you. Others, raise your hand. Come

1291. home. Come home to the Lord. Come home

1292. to the Lord. Come home to the Lord. To

1293. be loved, to be cared for. Come home to

1294. the Lord. Church, let's pray with all of

1295. those who raise their hands. Let's pray

1296. this prayer out loud in support. Jesus,

1297. I'm not running anymore. I'm coming home

1298. to the Lord. Would you receive me? Would

1299. you accept me as your son and daughter?

1300. I give my life to you. Be my Lord.

1301. Forgive me of my sins in Jesus' name.

1302. [music] Everyone said, "Come on, let's

1303. celebrate how great our God is."

  1304. >> Church, let's stand. We're going to

  1305. worship [music] together.

  1306. Oh, holy night.

1307. The stars [singing] are brightly

  1308. shinarior.

  1309. [singing]

  1310. Long

  1311. [singing]

  1312. in sin and

  1313. [singing] till he appeared.

1314. And the soul felt it worth

1315. a thrill [music] of hope.

  1316. The weery world [singing]

  1317. rejoicees [music]

  1318. beyond the grace.

1319. A new and glorious [singing and music]

  1320. morning.

  1321. Fall

  1322. [singing]

  1323. on your [music] knees.

  1324. Oh, hear

  1325. the [music] angel voice.

  1326. >> [singing]

  1327. >> Oh

  1328. divine.

  1329. [singing]

  1330. Oh,

  1331. when [music] Christ was

1332. he [singing] taught us to love [music]

  1333. one another. Father,

1334. His [singing] Lord is love and his

  1335. [music] gospel

  1336. is peace.

1337. Chains he shall [music and singing]

1338. break. For the slave is our brother

1339. [singing] and in his name

  1340. all [music] oppress

  1341. shall sing.

1342. Sweet hymns [music] of joy

1343. in grateful chorus [music and singing]

1344. praise we let all within

  1345. us [music and singing]

  1346. praise his holy name.

  1347. Christ

  1348. is the Lord.

  1349. [singing]

  1350. Oh, praise

  1351. his name forever [music]

  1352. his power

  1353. and glory. [music]

  1354. Heaven [singing] bro

  1355. his power

  1356. and glory.

  1357. Tell the world. [music]

  1358. >> [music]

  1359. >> Oh

  1360. me [music]

  1361. who

  1362. [music]

  1363. the angel voicees

  1364. Tonight

  1365. [music and singing]

  1366. when Christ was Oh,

  1367. [music]

  1368. all night.

  1369. Oh, divine.

1370. Jesus, we thank you for your birth. We

1371. thank you for your life. We thank you

1372. for your [music] life surrendered on the

  1373. cross.

1374. One who the son sets free is free

  1375. indeed.

1376. How could [singing] I express

1377. I could sing [singing] these songs

  1378. as I often do.

  1379. [singing]

1380. So I throw [music] up my heads and

1381. praise you again and again

1382. cuz all that I have is an hallelujah

  1383. [music]

  1384. [singing]

  1385. for a king

1386. except for a God sing hallelujah.

  1387. [music]

1388. I've got [singing] one response. [music]

1389. I've got just one move.

1390. With my arms just wide, [singing]

  1391. I will worship you.

1392. [music] So I throw up my head and praise

  1393. you again and again.

1394. The song that I [music] have is

  1395. [singing] a hallelujah.

  1396. [music]

  1397. Hallelujah.

  1398. And I know it's not much, but I'm

1399. nothing else for [singing] a king

  1400. [music]

1401. except for a heart singing hallelujah.

  1402. Hallelujah.

  1403. Oh, come on.

1404. [music] Oh, don't you get shy [singing]

1405. on me. Lift up your

  1406. [music]

  1407. lion.

1408. Get up and praise the Lord.

1409. Oh, come on my soul. Oh, don't [singing]

1410. you get [music] shy on me. Lift up your

1411. soul. Cuz you got a lion inside of

1412. [singing] those songs. Get [music] up

  1413. and praise the Lord.

1414. Oh, [music] come on my soul. Oh, don't

1415. you get shy of me on your soul. to my

  1416. [music] ling.

1417. Get up and praise the Lord. [music]

  1418. [music]

  1419. >> [music]

  1420. >> Praise the Lord.

  1421. Praise the Lord.

  1422. We say [music]

1423. I throw up my head and praise [music]

  1424. you again and again.

1425. All that I have is a highle.

  1426. [music]

1427. I know it's not much. Nothing else could

  1428. forget

1429. except for a heart singing highle.

  1430. [music]

  1431. Hallelujah.

  1432. Heat. Heat.

  1433. [music]

  1434. Hallelujah.

  1435. [music]

  1436. Hallelujah.

1437. Let's raise it up for Jesus this

1438. morning. [music] Let's honor him for his

  1439. birth

1440. with grateful hearts before God this

1441. morning. We remember and we honor his

1442. birth and also the message that he

1443. brings to us of hope,

1444. >> of peace, of love, and for joy. We thank

1445. you so much for being part of our 11:00

  1446. a.m. service this morning.

1447. >> Oh, yes. Sorry. My name's Sanjie. This

1448. is Joselyn. We're your location pastors.

  1449. Have a seat.

1450. >> Hey, uh, who enjoyed uh the 11:00

1451. service? Yeah. Come on. Hey guys, can we

1452. just thank all our car park ushers, our

1453. cafe people, all our teachers at the

1454. kids, our kids kids church, our audio

1455. visual, our team here on stage. Come on.

1456. How about our kids? Come on. [cheering]

1457. Even though Judah ran off midway through

1458. the performance, it's okay. You know, we

1459. love our children. So, we thank our

1460. volunteers and our staff. And friends,

1461. we're just going to close out very soon.

1462. But before that, it's so important that

1463. we understand the miracle of the manger.

1464. What happened? And Jesus is the reason

1465. for this season, friends. And uh he came

1466. to give us joy. Joy for all mankind. And

1467. as a church, when we go out of this

1468. service this morning, we want you to uh

1469. spread that joy. And the way we're doing

  1470. that, it's a heavy hamper. We've got

  1471. hampers.

1472. >> Yeah. Now, before you leave, uh grab a

1473. hamper. They're in the sleigh. Grab one.

1474. Take one to a neighbor, to a friend, a

  1475. work colleague,

  1476. >> maybe somebody that's that's that's uh

1477. lost their way from God. Yeah. As Miles

  1478. preached, you know, a prodigal that's

  1479. that's lost their way.

1480. >> Give them the hamper, friends.

1481. >> Give them that one more moment of hope,

1482. that one more moment of joy,

1483. >> you know, that one more miracle or

1484. healing that they need. It's in your

  1485. hands, friends. It's a challenge. I'm

1486. calling you to take a hamp up. One more

1487. for Jesus. Can you do it? One more for

1488. Jesus. Come on, friends. So, I'll just

1489. pray out a short prayer of we just thank

1490. you, Father, for 2025, for everything

1491. that you've done in our life. And for

1492. 2026, Father, we expect your goodness in

1493. 2026. Uh we just thank you, Father. May

1494. uh your blessing and protection be over

1495. the homes of everyone here and every

1496. person. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

1497. Hey friends, can we rise to our feet as

1498. we sing our last song, Joy?

1499. >> Come on, church. I'm going to sing Joy

  1500. to the World.

1501. >> Joy [singing] to the world.

1502. Let [music and singing] earth

  1503. Receive

  1504. the king.

  1505. Let every

  1506. heart

  1507. prepare him.

1508. Heaven and nature sing. [music]

1509. And heaven and nature sing.

  1510. And heaven.

  1511. Just [singing]

  1512. [music] see.

1513. You know the world, joy to the world,

  1514. the savior.

  1526. repeat [music]

  1527. the sound,

1529. judge of the world. [music]

  1530. [screaming]

  1531. He rules.

1532. He rules the world with truth and grace

  1533. and makes the nations

  1534. [music and singing]

  1535. prove

  1536. the [singing] glories

  1537. [music] of his rightuousness

1538. and wonders of his love. [singing]

1539. and wonders [music] all of his

  1540. and wonder.

  1541. [music]

  1548. Hey. Hey. Hey.
