  1. We're in a series called the gospel is.

  2. It's a powerful series. Sometimes we be

  3. need to go back to basics to be reminded

  4. of the power of what we sometimes

  5. forget. Warning, this is not an easy

  6. series. Not a feel good series. I'm not

  7. here to tickle your ear. I'm here to

  8. preach the word of God. And the gospel

  9. is not for the faint-hearted.

  10. It's not.

  11. It's free. It'll cost you everything.

  12. It's a powerful

  13. kingdom

  14. that Jesus brought. What is the gospel?

  15. What What is this good news? Well, it

  16. comes from a Greek word euangelion.

  17. Euangelion. It means good tidings, good

  18. news.

  19. Uh or a good message. So, the word

  20. gospel is mentioned 35 Sorry, 75 times

  21. in the Bible. And we use the word to

  22. describe the first four books in the New

  23. Testament. Also refers to a certain type

  24. of music. Little gospel music, anyone?

  25. Little gospel music. And it's a way to

  26. say something is true, gospel truth.

  27. But it's actually far more than that.

  28. It's more than just salvation.

  29. And it starts with Jesus, but it

  30. continues beyond

  31. because Jesus is actually talking about

  32. a kingdom.

  33. It's a kingdom.

  34. So, the gospel is a good news about a

  35. kingdom.

  36. And we need to understand from God's

  37. word, what is this kingdom?

  38. How do we live in this kingdom? What

  39. does this mean for me on Monday? What

  40. does it mean for me when I'm trying to

  41. get my workers on time and trying to get

  42. jobs done and trying to meet the needs

  43. of my spouse and trying to help my kids

  44. on their journey of faith. Well, what

  45. does this mean, this kingdom?

  46. Well, in Luke 13:22, Jesus went to the

    Luke 13:22

  47. towns and villages teaching as he went,

  48. pressing [snorts] towards Jerusalem.

  49. Someone asked him, "Lord,

  50. will only a few be saved?" And he

  51. replied, "Work hard

  52. to enter the narrow door."

  53. To what?

  54. God's kingdom.

  55. Where are we heading? God's kingdom.

  56. What is life about? God's kingdom. What

  57. is the good news? God's kingdom. What is

  58. the gospel? God's kingdom. For many will

  59. try to enter, but will fail. Now, the

  60. words here, work hard, that does not

  61. mean we're saved by our works. We're

  62. saved by grace. It's about what Jesus

  63. did on the cross that we're saved. But

  64. there is something we need to do

  65. in this kingdom. There there is a role

  66. that we need to play. Uh there is

  67. a responsibility that we have in this

  68. kingdom.

  69. And we enter the kingdom through the

  70. narrow door, that's Jesus Christ. But

  71. that begins once we step through that

  72. door, a lifestyle of living in a

  73. kingdom.

  74. A kingdom that's different to the ways

  75. of this world. A kingdom that's

  76. different to maybe our ambitions or our

  77. desires. A kingdom that's different to

  78. everyone. It's the kingdom of God. It's

  79. revolutionary. It's life-changing. It's

  80. what Jesus brought to planet Earth when

  81. he taught. That's why we've got to read

  82. the word of God, the Bible, to

  83. understand this kingdom, to understand

  84. the kingmaker, his nature, his ways, our

  85. God, so that we can be fully followers

  86. of his kingdom.

  87. So, there are obstacles we have to face.

  88. That's why we need to work hard. There's

  89. obstacles. There's resistance. There's

  90. this

  91. opposition and and and

  92. boundaries and barriers that stop us

  93. stepping into this kingdom. The first

  94. obstacle is the world.

  95. The world is not friendly to the kingdom

  96. of God.

  97. The world hates the kingdom of God.

  98. When we sign up for God's kingdom, we're

  99. setting ourselves to oppose the ways of

  100. the world. The ways the world lives by

  101. the ways of self and and and and the

  102. little g god, which is Satan. And the

  103. ways of the world are not the ways of

  104. God. So, first of the obstacle that we

  105. face is is the world. We find this out

  106. when we go to school. We we follow the

  107. Lord, yet everyone else is seems to be

  108. following something else. And we have to

  109. choose which way will we go as a a

  110. teenager, a young adult, or an adult

  111. life. Do Do we go the ways of the world,

  112. or do we go the ways of the kingdom?

  113. Number two obstacle is spiritual.

  114. There is an enemy. His name is Satan. He

  115. is real. He has demons and they are

  116. there to oppose us. They hate us. They

  117. are not for the kingdom of God. They're

  118. actually for the kingdom of darkness.

  119. And then there's the third obstacle.

  120. This would be the worst one of all that

  121. I have to face. And this is ourselves.

  122. It's our flesh.

  123. Although that we get saved, we still

  124. have a flesh nature, a selfish nature.

  125. And I don't know why. I just get annoyed

  126. at myself because I'm so just flawed. I

  127. just get bad attitudes. I get angry. Uh

  128. you know, I I I just spit the dummy,

  129. mate. I I get ungrateful. I get mad. I

  130. get mad at people that drive slow. I

  131. don't know why it is. It just makes me

  132. cranky. Just go the speed limit, mate.

  133. And then the prime minister says we're

  134. going to drive 10 k's slower or

  135. something. Mate, that's not helping us.

  136. So, I get annoyed with people who are

  137. slow, right? And don't don't get into

  138. the fast lane if you're slow. Just get

  139. into that right hand lane. Don't go that

  140. left lane if you're slow. But then, just

  141. as annoyed with the slow people, some

  142. guy flies up round me and I get annoyed

  143. at the guy that goes fast. I'm like,

  144. "Why are you annoyed?" "Why?" I got this

  145. flesh nature. I'm just human. I'm just

  146. like you. But the kingdom of God is

  147. about transforming us from the inside

  148. out. It's not based on speed limits or

  149. rules and laws. It's based on a heart

  150. change through the power of God. So,

  151. Mark 1:1.

    Mark 1:1

  152. The Bible says, "The beginning of the

  153. gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God."

  154. Mark starts

  155. his book

  156. by declaring that the gospel starts

  157. with Jesus.

  158. The gospel is built on Jesus. You cannot

  159. have a gospel, the good news, without

  160. Jesus. Now, Mark wasn't a disciple. He

  161. wasn't one of the 12, but he probably

  162. knew him personally. What I like about

  163. Mark's book that he wrote, it's kind of

  164. fast-paced.

  165. It's like a popular novel. It it it runs

  166. really quickly. I like reading it. And

  167. it was written for the Christians in

  168. Rome, which is the epicenter of the

  169. world power of all the different gods

  170. and religion and belief systems. And

  171. Mark was saying, "Okay, everything about

  172. the gospel starts with Jesus."

  173. 1:1, first sentence, first verse,

  174. "The gospel of what? Of Jesus Christ."

  175. So, let's unpack this good tidings, good

  176. message, good news. There's two thoughts

  177. today.

  178. It's the good news of salvation. That's

  179. where we got to start. Maybe you're new

  180. to church and you don't understand how

  181. to become a member. Did you buy a

  182. t-shirt? You know, how how do you get in

  183. the in in crowd? You know, do you have

  184. to drive a electric car? You know, what

  185. I don't know. What are the rules? Well

  186. Well, the rules are it starts with

  187. salvation between you and God. We're

  188. We're just here to present the Bible.

  189. And the personal relationship is between

  190. you and God. We're not this institution

  191. that you got to run through man to to

  192. get to God. You go straight to God.

  193. We're We're here to help you and support

  194. you, encourage you, but don't be

  195. dependent on us as a church or a pastor.

  196. You'll be dependent on God. And so,

  197. imagine you owed a debt

  198. and you couldn't repay it. Every mistake

  199. you'd ever made, every regret, every

  200. lie, every selfish act, every moment you

  201. fell short was written down.

  202. And it's just like this big bill that

  203. just kept growing. No matter how hard

  204. you work, you couldn't clear it. In

  205. fact, it only got bigger every day. I

  206. remember I was a builder and I was young

  207. and and and I got this special credit

  208. card and I thought, "Man, I'm I'm just

  209. going to load this thing up." And I just

  210. get these points if I'm using finding

  211. everything I could buy with this credit

  212. card to get these points. You know, I

  213. was in my early 20s. And and I was good

  214. at spending, mate. I was great. But a

  215. reckoning came at the end of the month

  216. and I'm like, "Man, I don't have enough

  217. to pay it off." And it kept building. I

  218. don't know if you went through those

  219. learnings as a as a young person finding

  220. out about credit and debt, but if you

  221. don't pay that debt off, it grows

  222. exponentially with interest. And then

  223. one day you're called into the courtroom

  224. and the case is simple. You got a debt.

  225. And justice says you got to pay it. And

  226. you stand there with nothing to offer.

  227. How How am I going to pay off this debt?

  228. It's too big. Jesus steps in and says,

  229. "I'll pay it, judge."

  230. And the judge says, "Uh Jesus, it'll

  231. cost you everything including your

  232. life."

  233. So, your debt's paid, but wait. You go

  234. to the funeral.

  235. And they're reading the will.

  236. And you find out that your name

  237. is written in the will.

  238. That the wealthiest man in the world,

  239. God,

  240. owns the cattle on a thousand hills.

  241. You're an heir

  242. to his inheritance. That's the gospel.

  243. It's beautiful.

  244. Romans writes, Paul summarizes the

  245. gospel.

  246. Chapter 3:21. Now, God has shown us a

  247. way

  248. to be made right with him

  249. without keeping the requirements of the

  250. law as was promised in the writings of

  251. Moses and the prophets long ago.

  252. We are made right with God by placing

  253. our faith

  254. in Jesus Christ.

  255. And this is true for everyone who

  256. believe everyone. No matter who you are.

  257. I love this. As a pastor, I love this.

  258. It's the gospel's for everyone, mate.

  259. Everyone. Everyone. I love the gospel's

  260. for everyone. I just want to go to the

  261. pub and the RSL and the beach. I just

  262. want to go out side of the church

  263. sometimes. Just tell the people, mate,

  264. the gospel's for you.

  265. Um

  266. For everyone has sinned and all have

  267. fallen short of God's glorious standard.

  268. Yet God in his grace freely makes us

  269. right in his sight.

  270. He did this through who?

  271. Through Jesus Christ.

  272. When he freed us from the penalty of

  273. sin, for God presented Jesus as a

  274. sacrifice for sin. People are made right

  275. with God when they believe that Jesus

  276. sacrificed his life shedding his blood.

  277. Jesus took our place. He took that

  278. penalty. Now, faith is not just

  279. believing

  280. because even the demons believe in

  281. Jesus.

  282. Faith is trusting God

  283. to be your Lord and you will save you.

  284. Why does this matter?

  285. All of us will face our maker.

  286. We will give an account of our life. We

  287. have a bill.

  288. We've all built this bill up. Some of

  289. you got a big bill. Some of you got lots

  290. of sin. Some of you had a big life

  291. before you met Christ. Man, we got clubs

  292. and drugs and you got a lot to talk

  293. about. But the deal is even if it's a

  294. pretty small bill, it's still a bill.

  295. The only way it can be paid is through

  296. Jesus Christ and we will all face God

  297. one day and we'll give an account. And

  298. if our book is written in the Lamb's

  299. Book of Life, if we're saved, we go to

  300. heaven. If it's not, we go to hell. It's

  301. very simple,

  302. but it's very powerful because we need

  303. to understand we need Jesus Christ to

  304. forgive us.

  305. Tim Keller says the gospel is this, we

  306. are more sinful and flawed in ourselves

  307. than we ever dared believe. We are. It's

  308. okay. Let's be real. Let's be honest.

  309. We're all flawed. We're all sinful. None

  310. of us are perfect. Yet at the same time

  311. we're more loved.

  312. Come on, church. You are loved. You are

  313. loved.

  314. More loved and accepted in Jesus than

  315. we'd ever dared hope. So that's the

  316. beginning. Salvation, we accept Christ.

  317. We step into this new kingdom. This is

  318. the beginning. It's not the end.

  319. The second thought, number one, the good

  320. news of the salvation. The second

  321. thought is this good news of a kingdom.

  322. What is this kingdom?

  323. What is this kingdom that Jesus is

  324. talking about? A story or an analogy is

  325. a man plants a seed in the ground.

  326. At first it seems small and almost

  327. invisible, easy to overlook. Can't see

  328. any evidence.

  329. But over time it grows and grows and

  330. grows until it becomes a big tree

  331. where the birds of the air rest in its

  332. branches and nests for its babies.

  333. The same way the kingdom of God starts

  334. quietly in a person's heart. It's one

  335. decision. It's an act of faith and

  336. trust.

  337. Doesn't look impressive,

  338. but given time,

  339. it changes everything.

  340. It grows beyond what anyone expected

  341. bringing life shelter hope for those

  342. around us as well.

  343. The kingdom is more than salvation.

  344. The So, the gospel is more than

  345. salvation. The gospel is a kingdom.

  346. Mark 1:14, later on after John was

    Mark 1:14

  347. arrested, Jesus went to Galilee where he

  348. preached what? He preached God's good

  349. news.

  350. Here's what he said.

  351. The time promised by God

  352. has come at last. He announced, "The

  353. kingdom of God is near.

  354. Repent of your sins

  355. and believe the good news." The good

  356. news.

  357. Faith in Christ gives us access to be

  358. citizens of this kingdom. It's not a

  359. kingdom that reigns over a geography.

  360. It's not a kingdom that reigns with

  361. borders.

  362. It is a kingdom that reigns in your

  363. heart.

  364. There are actually two kingdoms

  365. the Bible teaches.

  366. There's the kingdom of God, but there's

  367. also the kingdom of darkness.

  368. 1 Colossians 1 Sorry, Colossians 1:13,

    Colossians 1:13

  369. for he has rescued us from the kingdom

  370. of what? Of darkness.

  371. There's a kingdom of darkness, kingdom

  372. of the world, and transferred us into

  373. the kingdom

  374. of his dear son

  375. who purchased our freedom and forgave

  376. our sins. Now, each kingdom or land has

  377. laws. Each country has different laws.

  378. And the kingdom of God has different

  379. laws.

  380. Some countries have got some strange

  381. laws.

  382. Our kingdom actually has got strange

  383. laws.

  384. And we can't understand it with our

  385. natural mind because it's something

  386. bigger than us. God's ways are higher

  387. than us. Now, each country, if you go

  388. traveling, I just want to help you make

  389. sure you don't end up in jail by doing

  390. the wrong thing. In Singapore, it's

  391. illegal to chew chewing gum. Sorry, it's

  392. illegal to sell chewing gum.

  393. And you can get 2 years in prison if you

  394. import it. So, no more than two packs of

  395. chewy in in your in your bag because

  396. you'll go to jail. In Arizona, it's

  397. illegal for your donkey to fall asleep

  398. in your bathtub.

  399. Now, just in case you go to Arizona,

  400. just by chance you buy a donkey

  401. and you have a bathtub, heads up. Don't

  402. let it fall asleep. It's an important

  403. law. You need to know that. Portugal,

  404. it's illegal to pee in the ocean.

  405. I don't know how they enforce that.

  406. How [snorts] would you know if I pee in

  407. the ocean? Being a surfer

  408. in the cold water,

  409. peeing is your friend.

  410. It It gives you another 20 minutes if

  411. you're freezing.

  412. Just saying.

  413. Switzerland, it's illegal to hike naked.

  414. If you're in Switzerland, you want to go

  415. naked, you you nudie, do a nudie run,

  416. don't do it. It's illegal.

  417. Um it's cold and I don't know why

  418. anybody would, but it's illegal. Just so

  419. you know, Poland, Winnie the Pooh was

  420. banned because he has no pants.

  421. Yeah, and and and what discretion.

  422. France, you can't name your pig

  423. Napoleon.

  424. Switzerland, you can't flush at night

  425. due to noise.

  426. So, I just if you got to do a number

  427. two, like

  428. Ben said earlier, just do it in the

  429. daytime.

  430. Um

  431. UAE, you can't swear, not even online.

  432. Any Victoria Any Vickies with us? I just

  433. feel for you guys, Victorians. Anybody

  434. going to raise your hand? Born in

  435. Victoria or lived in Victoria. You're

  436. all too embarrassed. Come on, there's

  437. got to be a couple of Vickies, couple of

  438. AFL. Come on, don't be a shy. I'm going

  439. to make fun of you, but that's okay.

  440. Don't be shy.

  441. Ready? Victoria, you can't change a

  442. light bulb unless you're a licensed

  443. sparky.

  444. Now, Jack, you'd be a millionaire, mate.

  445. You You'd be getting 150 call out to

  446. change a 60 water.

  447. In Victoria, you can't dress up as

  448. Batman or Robin cuz it's considering

  449. impersonating a police officer.

  450. And in Victoria, you can't vacuum at

  451. night due to the noise.

  452. No one in Victoria is going to heaven

  453. because you need to have a clean home.

  454. You got to be able to vacuum and get

  455. that energy out. I'd be in jail if I was

  456. pastoring in Victoria. Well, we do have

  457. a church in in actually in in Melbourne.

  458. I just got to be careful when I preach

  459. there. Don't tell them that I clean at

  460. night and dress up like Batman and I'm

  461. changing bulbs, otherwise they'll kick

  462. me out.

  463. They'll record it and they'll send it to

  464. someone. I'll be in jail.

  465. Yet God's kingdom is just as shocking.

  466. And it's kind of not easy.

  467. It goes against our flesh.

  468. It goes against the world.

  469. It goes against the enemy that rules

  470. this

  471. land.

  472. It's the kingdom of God.

  473. Here's what the kingdom of God is like.

  474. Make Jesus your Lord. Dive into the

  475. adventure of faith. Just like in

  476. Philippians 2:10 says, "Everything you

    Philippians 2:10

  477. have belongs to God." Feel the power in

  478. Psalms 24:1 as you acknowledge his

    Psalms 24:1

  479. ownership. Love your enemies.

  480. It's not just a challenge, it's a

  481. transformative journey. Go the extra

  482. mile for free.

  483. Surprise the world with your generosity.

  484. The first will be last, the last will be

  485. first. Embrace the unexpected twists of

  486. the kingdom in Matthew 19.

  487. Don't

  488. go to bed mad. Experience the freedom of

  489. forgiveness every single day. Remain a

  490. virgin until you're married. Celebrate

  491. purity and commitment. Only have sex in

  492. marriage. Discover the beauty of

  493. intimacy

  494. within the sacred bond. Don't get drunk.

  495. Choose clarity and joy in your spirit.

  496. Marry the opposite sex. Step into your

  497. divine design for relationship. Marry a

  498. Christian.

  499. Unite in faith for a powerful

  500. partnership. Turn the other cheek.

  535. kingdom of God is more than just rules

  536. and regulations. Don't get lost in the

  537. rules and regulations. It's about

  538. principles that starts with a

  539. relationship with God through Jesus

  540. Christ. So, the kingdom of God is built

  541. on relationship with God. This is what

  542. makes it different from every other

  543. kingdom. It's not rules and regulations

  544. you check check off the list. It's

  545. having a relationship with God

  546. through Jesus Christ. It's talking to

  547. him.

  548. It's intimately walking with him.

  549. It's getting to know him. It's reading

  550. the word of God to discover the

  551. character of God, to understand the

  552. principles of God, to know the kingdom

  553. of God, so you can become a citizen of

  554. God, but it's all starts with

  555. relationship.

  556. Too often as men, we want to build these

  557. rules and check these boxes, but it's

  558. relationship.

  559. How's your relationship with God?

  560. How intimate are you?

  561. Are you longing to spend time with him?

  562. Are you trying to get away each day to

  563. carve out intimate one-on-one time

  564. without being distracted by other people

  565. or other screens or other Are you Are

  566. you just spending time somehow somewhere

  567. intimately? It's like a a marriage or

  568. relationship. You've got to pour in your

  569. time, your love, your devotion.

  570. And the kingdom of God is not easy cuz

  571. it takes work.

  572. It takes discipline. Love is just not an

  573. emotion or a tingly wingley feel good in

  574. a great song. [snorts]

  575. Love is that commitment to follow the

  576. Lord even when things are going tough.

  577. Love is commitment to serve the Lord

  578. when you don't get the answers that

  579. you're praying for.

  580. The kingdom of God is following the Lord

  581. even though you don't understand. It's

  582. trusting in his ways are higher than

  583. your ways. That's why we must give grace

  584. to people who accept Christ and become

  585. these citizens of this kingdom. It takes

  586. time for the Holy Spirit to convict and

  587. encourage. Jesus said, "I must go so

  588. someone greater can come that the Holy

  589. Spirit can give us revelation of areas

  590. in our life. The Holy Spirit can give us

  591. peace and joy that surpasses our

  592. understanding. The Holy Spirit can give

  593. us faith and courage to stand firm when

  594. everything seems to be falling apart

  595. around us. But it all starts with a love

  596. for God. Do you love him today?

  597. I can't force you to love him.

  598. But I can tell you he loves you.

  599. I can tell you he's crazy about you.

  600. I can tell you you are the most

  601. important precious thing in his eyes.

  602. That you are the apple of his eye. That

  603. he's crazy about you. That he loves you

  604. even though you don't deserve it. Even

  605. though you can't earn it. His love is so

  606. great. This is the gospel that Jesus

  607. Christ came that he died and rose again

  608. so we could be saved and enter his

  609. kingdom.

  610. 2 Peter 1:3, by his divine power

    2 Peter 1:3

  611. God has given us everything we need

  612. for living a godly life. In summary, the

  613. gospel is about a perfect God

  614. working through imperfect mankind

  615. to rescue you, but more than rescue you,

  616. to restore you.

  617. To advance his kingdom

  618. so others can be rescued.

  619. The kingdom of God is a relationship

  620. with God through Jesus.

  621. The kingdom of God is living and active.

  622. The The kingdom of God is so deep so

  623. wide, so beautiful. It takes a lifetime

  624. to master.

  625. And it seems like the more you

  626. understand how big God is as he reveals

  627. the facets of his nature, the more there

  628. is to learn and understand. We never

  629. stop learning about the kingdom. We

  630. continue to be students to study his

  631. word, to understand his nature and his

  632. character.

  633. And we allow his kingdom to transform us

  634. from the inside out, not through works,

  635. not through checking the box, not

  636. through being a perfect person, but

  637. surrendering.

  638. Putting him as Lord.

  639. And we're going to sing right now and I

  640. just want to challenge everyone in this

  641. place as we hail

  642. King Jesus.

  643. Have you surrendered and made him Lord?

  644. And this is a daily decision.

  645. The Bible says to take up your cross

  646. daily.

  647. I'd love all of us to stand right now.

  648. I'd love us to sing.

  649. And as we sing through this, the purpose

  650. of this time

  651. is to ensure that Jesus

  652. is the Lord of our lives.

  653. That you've surrendered and continue to

  654. surrender and to him and make him Lord.

  655. That

  656. he's Lord of your business.

  657. He's Lord of your finances.

  658. He's Lord of your marriage. He's Lord of

  659. your children.

  660. He's Lord of your career. He's Lord of

  661. your future.

  662. All hail

  663. King Jesus.

  664. If he's not on the throne of your heart,

  665. would you put him on there

  666. today?

  667. Holy Spirit, would you minister to

  668. people in this place?

  669. Holy Spirit, would you do what only you

  670. can? Maybe

  671. you feel convicted [music] today.

  672. Gosh, I

  673. I've sort of been doing my own thing.

  674. Is he Lord?

  675. Is he Lord? I I I have to wrestle with

  676. this.

  677. Is he Lord

  678. of my life? Is he Lord of our church?

  679. Or do we just run church the way we've

  680. always done it?

  681. Do we just run out of it with human

  682. wisdom and past experiences? Are we

  683. desperately seeking

  684. his lordship in our lives daily?

  685. To have your way.

  686. To guide and direct.

  687. That I we would all be open to his

  688. voice, to be led by his spirit

  689. in a relationship.

  690. Let's sing together.
