  1. I'm excited to be bringing the word

  2. today. We just finished the series last

  3. week called get wisdom. It was a great

  4. series

  5. where we applied biblical wisdom to our

  6. lives and we started off that series

  7. rooted out of

  8. Proverbs 1:7. And Proverbs 1:7 said that

    Proverbs 1:7 Proverbs 1:7

  9. the fear of the Lord is the beginning of

  10. wisdom. But we agreed as we communicated

  11. together

  12. and you changed and you agreed with me

  13. while I was preaching and shifted your

  14. body language. I could just tell that

  15. you agreed with me. You agreed with me

  16. that the word fear so often we

  17. misinterpret in our English language and

  18. we agreed that it's a better to to

  19. translate the word to the word

  20. reverence. And therefore when we stick

  21. the word reverence into that scripture

  22. that it's the the reverence of God which

  23. is the beginning of wisdom. Well, I

  24. thought we should bookend the series

  25. with trying to encapsulate the reverence

  26. of God

  27. and how we ought to live from that

  28. position.

  29. And so that's what we're going to do.

  30. I'm going to be honest. Um

  31. I could be preaching for the next 6

  32. hours, for 365 days on this topic and

  33. still not cover an inch.

  34. But hear my heart.

  35. Everybody's laughing cuz I say that

  36. often.

  37. Here's an important part.

  38. It's going to require us to shift

  39. hearts.

  40. It's going to require us to have hearts

  41. that maybe were once calloused over

  42. because of hurt and pain to go Lord, I'm

  43. willing to have a softened heart to

  44. encounter and experience you in a new

  45. manner. It's going to require us to do

  46. something different. It's going to

  47. require moments of of discomfort to

  48. encounter what God wants to speak to us

  49. about.

  50. You see friends, I've been mulling over

  51. a verse for a while

  52. and it's in Matthew 7:21.

    Matthew 7:21

  53. It says this.

  54. It says not everyone says to me, "Lord,

  55. Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  56. but the one who does the will of my

  57. father who is in heaven. On that day

  58. many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we

  59. not prophesy in your name and cast out

  60. demons in your name and do many mighty

  61. works in your name?' And then will I

  62. declare to them, 'I never knew you.

  63. Depart from me, you workers

  64. of lawlessness.'

  65. This message is not about condemnation.

  66. I'm not trying to condemn anybody's

  67. relationship. What I'm praying that will

  68. happen today is that Holy Spirit will

  69. convict your heart to change your

  70. heart's position to posture of pursuing

  71. who he truly is.

  72. As your pastor, my heart I would I I

  73. would couldn't bear the thought of you

  74. standing in front of King Jesus one day

  75. and go, "But my pastors didn't tell me

  76. the truth."

  77. And I'm going to be honest, I I I

  78. wrestle with that idea and concept.

  79. There there's a burden on true

  80. pastorship where where we go, we have

  81. been called to lead a congregation to do

  82. one thing ultimately. So, when you land

  83. in front of our king, which we all will

  84. do, whether we like it or not, that

  85. he'll welcome you into heaven and into

  86. eternity and saying, "I know who you are

  87. and I know you intimately." And so, my

  88. heart's posture this morning is for you

  89. to encounter him, that we would stoke a

  90. fire that you've never had before.

  91. Whether you've been saved for 40 years,

  92. 4 years, 4 days, or 4 hours because you

  93. came to the previous service, my heart

  94. is this,

  95. that you'd encounter him in a new

  96. manner.

  97. That old manner won't be enough,

  98. but you'd wake up daily desiring an

  99. encounter with our God.

  100. Spurgeon says this. He says, "The

  101. highest science, the loftiest

  102. speculation, the mightiest philosophy

  103. which can ever engage the attention of a

  104. child of God is the name,

  105. the nature, the person, the work, the

  106. doings, and the existence of the great

  107. God."

  108. And so my prayer is this,

  109. that today is the start of a stoking

  110. of a desire to know more about the

  111. majesty and wonder of God.

  112. Not safe Christianity where we stay in

  113. our seats and our pews, and we confined

  114. to the understanding of who God is

  115. within the context of a Sunday, but

  116. rather a faith-filled belief that we get

  117. to serve a God who is so much greater

  118. than we'll ever understand, but because

  119. of his grace and his love,

  120. he's willing to pry open the windows of

  121. heaven so we could get a glimpse of who

  122. he is.

  123. I wonder what's in store for us one day

  124. when we get to experience it all.

  125. As I mentioned, the message today is

  126. going to be slightly different.

  127. Cuz it'll be hard for me to encapsulate

  128. the reverence of God, the majesty, the

  129. wonder of God in 25 minutes.

  130. But what we're going to need to do, all

  131. of us, is make a decision in this moment

  132. that we would allow Holy Spirit to speak

  133. to us.

  134. That we'd understand that this is a

  135. living, breathing document that as the

  136. word of God is spoken over your lives,

  137. that it would do a work in your heart,

  138. but we need to make a acknowledgement

  139. and a decision that that's going to

  140. happen today.

  141. So, the definition of insanity is this.

  142. I use this quite often,

  143. but I like it.

  144. Cuz the definition of insanity says,

  145. "Insanity is doing the same thing over

  146. and over and over and expecting a

  147. different result."

  148. Practically what that looks like for us

  149. on a Sunday

  150. is showing up over and Sunday in, Sunday

  151. out, Sunday in. We walk in, we hear a

  152. word of God,

  153. we walk out,

  154. and nothing changes in our life.

  155. And we've left just having a better

  156. intellectual understanding of who our

  157. God is and what he's called us to, but

  158. we've not allowed the word to soften our

  159. heart and then apply it to it.

  160. Listen, the one I I just need everybody

  161. to I get this one sense from me.

  162. This is no condemnation.

  163. Th- Th- This is an ongoing ongoing for

  164. everybody. Anybody that stands on the

  165. platform here and tells you anything

  166. else, it it we are all being sanctified

  167. continuously. It's an ongoing decision.

  168. And I'll speak about it, but it's going

  169. to require us to do something different.

  170. So, I'm going to ask everybody to stand.

  171. Because what we're doing in standing and

  172. opening our arms is this.

  173. It's a physical representation of an

  174. inward decision. You are telling your

  175. brain that you're making a decision

  176. today to lean into the word of God and

  177. do something different.

  178. So, would we do something different?

  179. Would you open up your hands? We're

  180. going to receive the word of God.

  181. I believe that God's going to speak to

  182. us all individually for where we're at.

  183. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.

  184. You see every heart and you see every

  185. hand, Lord.

  186. Lord, I pray whether we've been saved

  187. for 40 years, 4 years, 4 days, 4 hours,

  188. 40 seconds. Maybe during worship you've

  189. encountered someone. Lord, that our

  190. hearts would be open to your word.

  191. Lord, that whether there's hurt, pain,

  192. confusion, things within our week this

  193. week that are trying to stop us from

  194. focusing on what it is that you're

  195. calling us to today. Lord, I pray that

  196. our attention will focus directly on you

  197. and your word. That people won't see

  198. Luke and the funny mustache,

  199. but they'll hear the word of God being

  200. preached. And that the word of God would

  201. go out and it won't return void, but it

  202. will break chains and restore hearts.

  203. But Jesus, ultimately,

  204. that people will come into right

  205. standing with you this morning. And all

  206. God's people said, "Amen." All righty.

  207. Let's get into the word of God.

  208. Me, too.

  209. I have been mulling over this topic for

  210. probably the last 6 to 8 months.

  211. If I've got to be honest, I've been

  212. having a sense then that as the global

  213. church, the capital C church, as

  214. Christians, if I've got to be honest,

  215. we've started to lose reverence of who

  216. our God is.

  217. And I love the fact that we get to call

  218. him Abba Father.

  219. And that we get to call him friend.

  220. And that we get to call him our helper

  221. and our provider. But friend, Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:29

  222. 12:29 says that our God is a consuming

  223. fire. So, I wonder what we're missing

  224. out because of familiarity. And part of

  225. this diving into the idea of the

  226. reverence of God, I've been in and out

  227. of the book of Revelation. The book of

  228. Revelation is Christ's revelation to

  229. John. John being one of the apostles,

  230. is exiled on an island, Patmos.

  231. And what's happening there, scholars

  232. will tell us

  233. that the majority of all the apostles

  234. are now dead. They've been martyred

  235. for the way, for following Christ.

  236. But this letter,

  237. this book serves as a reminder to the

  238. church to stay faithful amidst the chaos

  239. of the world around them.

  240. To understand that our God has overcome

  241. the world and so

  242. a piece of scripture I've been diving

  243. into, if you've got your Bible, is

  244. Revelation 4

  245. 1 to 11.

  246. And I'm going to read it for us.

  247. A snippet.

  248. A mere look at a peek into the throne

  249. room that we get access to.

  250. Just a a sneak peek.

  251. Revelation 4:1 says this, "After this, I

    Revelation 4:1

  252. looked and behold a door standing open

  253. in heaven. And the first voice which I

  254. had heard speaking to me like a trumpet

  255. said, 'Come up here and I will show you

  256. what must take place after this.' At

  257. once I was in the spirit and behold a

  258. throne stood in heaven with one seated

  259. on the throne and he, listen, and he who

  260. sat there had the appearance of jasper

  261. and carnelian and around the throne was

  262. a rainbow that had the appearance of an

  263. emerald. He who sat there

  264. The imagery is of a victorious king.

  265. No king is found seated during war.

  266. It's only a king who has overcome who

  267. could take the seated position and so

  268. we're getting this view that our God has

  269. overcome and it gives you a sneak peek

  270. that no matter what's going on in your

  271. life, you're serving and worshiping a

  272. king who is seated.

  273. Bible goes on to say this,

  274. "Around the throne were 24 thrones and

  275. seated on the thrones were 24 elders

  276. clothed in white garments with golden

  277. crowns on their heads. From the throne

  278. came flashes of lightning and rumblings

  279. and peals of thunder and before the

  280. throne were seven torches of fire which

  281. are the seven spirits of God." Man,

  282. there's so much in here. I'd encourage

  283. you as well to go read Exodus 34:29

    Exodus 34:29

  284. about how Moses receives the law and the

  285. tabernacles and anyway, do yourself a

  286. favor, read the Bible. It's exciting.

  287. Uh

  288. and before the throne there was as if it

  289. were sea of glass like crystal around

  290. the throne on each side of the throne

  291. are four living creatures full of eyes

  292. in front and behind. The first living

  293. creature like a lion, the second living

  294. creature

  295. not yet.

  296. Um

  297. with the face uh of a man and the fourth

  298. living creature like an eagle in flight

  299. and the four living creatures each of

  300. them with six wings are full of eyes all

  301. around them within and day and night

  302. they never cease to say listen, they see

  303. him and say holy, holy, holy is the Lord

  304. God almighty who was and is and is to

  305. come and whenever the living creatures

  306. give glory and honor and thanks to him

  307. who is seated on the throne who lives

  308. forever and ever the 24 elders listen,

  309. fall down. They are compelled. They fall

  310. down before him who is seated on the

  311. throne and worship him who lives forever

  312. and ever.

  313. They cast their crowns before the throne

  314. saying worthy are you our Lord and God

  315. to receive glory and honor and power for

  316. you created all things. By your will

  317. they existed and were created. I keep

  318. coming back to this

  319. piece of scripture cuz it leads me,

  320. draws me in continuously to question

  321. myself. If angels and elders are

  322. surrounded of the throne day and night

  323. and their only response every time they

  324. see him all day and all night is to fall

  325. down and cast their crowns before him.

  326. What am I missing out on?

  327. You see a life lived in reverence

  328. towards God helps others get a glimpse

  329. of his majesty and wonder. In Exodus

    Exodus 34:29

  330. 34:29 as I mentioned to you, Moses comes

  331. down after doing what? After spending 40

  332. days and 40 nights with God.

  333. And he comes down with his face shining.

  334. And behold the Israelites could not look

  335. at him cuz they could not stand the

  336. majesty and the wonder of God. And so he

  337. has to put a veil over his face. But

  338. because of Christ

  339. 2 Corinthians 12:18 says this.

    2 Corinthians 12:18

  340. It sums up to say that because of

  341. Christ, we are now able with what? With

  342. open face

  343. to gaze upon the glory of the Lord.

  344. And his glory is not kept away from us.

  345. We don't have to shy away from the

  346. light, but rather allow his glory to

  347. transform us from within.

  348. When we spend time with God and behold

  349. him, we are transformed from glory to

  350. glory.

  351. What I'd love to do

  352. is give you insight into three key

  353. themes that I've been looking into.

  354. That I pray you would go home and again,

  355. not allow just to leave today, but would

  356. start to transform the way that you

  357. approach our God. Here's the first

  358. thing. Reverence of God, listen, compels

  359. us to a greater desire to know him.

  360. I said on a Sunday, we can come in and

  361. we can hear messages and we can read

  362. Bible.

  363. My question to us is when we encounter

  364. God, do we encounter him intellectually?

  365. Or do we encounter him relationally and

  366. spiritually?

  367. Reverence of God forces us, compels us,

  368. that the more we know him relationally,

  369. listen, the more we want to know him

  370. relationally. That the more we get

  371. insight into who he is, we are compelled

  372. to want to get more

  373. insight into who he is.

  374. Spurgeon says this, he says, "When we

  375. see God as he is, we shall admire him as

  376. we ought.

  377. A verse I've been wrestling with, I've

  378. been wrestling with a few of them

  379. recently.

  380. In the context of church and pastoring

  381. and my own faith is Revelation 2:4, a

    Revelation 2:4

  382. letter to the church of Ephesus.

  383. And Jesus writes this, "I know your

  384. works, your toil, your patient

  385. endurance, and how you cannot bear with

  386. those who are evil, but have tested

  387. those who call themselves apostles and

  388. are not and found them to be false. I

  389. know you are enduring patiently and

  390. bearing up for my name's sake and have

  391. not grown weary." Sounds great.

  392. Look how good you're doing as

  393. Christians.

  394. Look who Look at you telling everybody

  395. about Jesus.

  396. Look, you're doing all the great works.

  397. Look, great Christians.

  398. But Jesus goes on and says, "But I have

  399. this against you,

  400. that you have abandoned the love you had

  401. at first."

  402. Man, do I wrestle with that verse.

  403. Cuz as a pastor, I've shared this

  404. before, it's easy for me to pick up my

  405. Bible and think about what great verse I

  406. could share with people on a Sunday.

  407. And he goes, "Luke, that's all good and

  408. well.

  409. Don't abandon your first true love."

  410. And so, reverence of God compels us

  411. to a greater desire to know him. Here's

  412. a second thing.

  413. Reverence of God compels us to obedience

  414. and surrender.

  415. This is a tough one for us. I'm going to

  416. be honest.

  417. Like if we've got to look at each other

  418. face to face, we're like,

  419. "Yeah, maybe I do know who God is.

  420. But obedience and surrender?

  421. Like that's not always fun. Like let's

  422. be honest.

  423. For those that don't know, uh this is

  424. not what I do full-time.

  425. I work.

  426. So, pastoring

  427. is not always fun.

  428. I do love you, I promise.

  429. But, sometimes

  430. the easiest decision's not to do this.

  431. There's a

  432. piece of scripture in Acts 1

  433. uh

  434. Let me get it right. Acts 9:1-9.

    Acts 9:1–9

  435. We won't have time to read it, but Paul

  436. has been going around persecuting

  437. Christians.

  438. Killing them.

  439. Holding cloaks while people are getting

  440. stoned.

  441. That stage, his name is Saul.

  442. Saul's on the road to Damascus.

  443. You can go read it. I promise you.

  444. He's on the road to Damascus.

  445. And he's encountered by the majesty of

  446. Christ.

  447. In a bright light, Christ encounter him,

  448. and Paul's trajectory in life changes

  449. forever.

  450. The epistles go on to tell us

  451. that Paul makes one hard decision after

  452. another. The willingness to be

  453. persecuted for the way. Why?

  454. Cuz he got a glimpse into the majesty of

  455. who our God is.

  456. It's not because it was easy.

  457. You listen to what Paul goes through.

  458. Stoning and shipwreck and almost dying

  459. multiple times, locked up in prison. The

  460. willingness to do that. Why?

  461. Cuz he felt like it?

  462. Cuz he got a glimpse

  463. into the wonder of who our God is.

  464. And was compelled

  465. to a position of surrender and

  466. obedience.

  467. I wonder what that looks like for us on

  468. a Sunday.

  469. What's the reverence of God compelling

  470. you to today?

  471. Might not always be the easy thing.

  472. Is it the willingness of discomfort to

  473. start serving? Is it the the willingness

  474. to uh approach and face your pain and

  475. your hurt and your past struggles and

  476. find restoration? Is it the willingness

  477. to break chains and break addictions?

  478. The reverence of God compels us to

  479. surrender in obedience.

  480. Have the team come up.

  481. I wrote this and I wasn't going to read

  482. this

  483. but I just felt now that I should.

  484. The peace of God

  485. becomes real

  486. when we understand who offers it.

  487. It's easy to pray for the peace of God

  488. when we misinterpret who actually is on

  489. offer.

  490. Imagine what our lens of peace might

  491. look like if we actually truly

  492. understood who the God is that offers

  493. it.

  494. The God seated on the throne victorious

  495. where the earth is but his footstool.

  496. The reverence of God compels us

  497. to surrender in obedience.

  498. Here's my final point.

  499. The reverence of God compels us to a

  500. life of worship.

  501. The reverence of God compels us

  502. to a life of worship.

  503. Not an act of worship.

  504. Not a Sunday I walk in and get my

  505. 20-minute fill kind of worship.

  506. But a life willing to understand that

  507. everything I do is for the glory of our

  508. God.

  509. Revelation 4:8-11 describes how the

    Revelation 4:8–11

  510. elders are compelled in his presence to

  511. bow down and worship him.

  512. An understanding of who our God is will

  513. compel us to a moment of worship.

  514. I mean a life of worship.

  515. The opposite of what I said.

  516. A life of worship calls us to pray

  517. through our pain.

  518. To worship through our worry.

  519. To magnify through our mourning because

  520. you see reverence leads to worship.

  521. And worship calls us to abide in him.

  522. And abiding in him causes us to trust.

  523. And where there's trust we can have

  524. peace.

  525. But it starts with a position of

  526. worship.

  527. Worship

  528. leads to abiding.

  529. And abiding to trust.

  530. Trust to peace and peace to a life lived

  531. in the fullness of your calling.

  532. In Luke 19

  533. Bible tells us that Jesus comes riding

  534. on the back of a donkey into Jerusalem.

  535. It says that the people all around him

  536. worshiping and praising. [music]

  537. And the Pharisees

  538. who are missing the glory and majesty

  539. and wonder of that moment turn to

  540. Christ.

  541. And they say to him, "Hey!

  542. Tell them to stop."

  543. And I love Jesus' response.

  544. Cuz not only is it a response, but it's

  545. a challenge to all of us.

  546. Jesus in Luke 19:40 says, "And he

    Luke 19:40

  547. answered,

  548. I tell you if these were silent."

  549. Talking about the people around him.

  550. "The very stones would cry out."

  551. Friends, I don't know about you, but I

  552. won't be out

  553. out done by an in animate in animate

  554. object. An animate object.

  555. Reverence compels [music] us

  556. to a life of worship.

  557. This message is not about one

  558. and not just about behavior

  559. modification.

  560. This is not just about six tips to go

  561. home tomorrow to create a strong

  562. relationship.

  563. This is about drawing

  564. us into a greater all and wonder of who

  565. our God is.

  566. But a 25-minute message is probably not

  567. going to just do it by itself.

  568. It'll require us

  569. to have moments of discomfort.

  570. Moments of not always understanding.

  571. Moments of yearning and pursuing.

  572. And taking ownership.

  573. Cuz I believe that as a church

  574. as a people

  575. revival will come

  576. when it comes through us first.

  577. We can enter the throne room of grace so

  578. confidently and boldly. We all like that

  579. verse.

  580. For God and be honest, sometimes I feel

  581. like and I'm I'm putting my hand up

  582. here. I'm This is like I said, this is

  583. no condemnation. This is all of us,

  584. friends.

  585. We enter the throne room of grace

  586. and we view his majesty not to praise,

  587. but to ask.

  588. Lord, you are great, but can you?

  589. Lord, I worship you, but would you?

  590. Lord, I magnify, but can you?

  591. Instead of starting from a position

  592. of reverence

  593. and saying, "Despite everything that's

  594. going on around me,

  595. and Lord, I might not understand what's

  596. happening,

  597. but I know that you're a good God."

  598. Friend, the message is

  599. ultimately super simple.

  600. Would we all return

  601. to the love we had at first?

  602. I draw your mind back to the moment when

  603. you encountered Christ for the first

  604. time.

  605. The moment when you walked into a church

  606. or into a room

  607. feeling the weight of the world and of

  608. your past,

  609. and felt the freedom of the acceptance

  610. of his love and his mercy. Friend, I

  611. draw you back to the joy of your

  612. salvation.

  613. Not because of anything you did in that

  614. moment,

  615. but because of the majesty and the

  616. wonder and the glory of our God. The

  617. Bible says, "For the joy set before him

  618. For the joy

  619. For the joy set before him,

  620. he would endure the cross

  621. knowing full well the pain and the hurt

  622. and the suffering he would go in." But

  623. the Bible says, "For the joy set before

  624. him," which was you, friend.

  625. He walked through those streets battered

  626. and bruised carrying the cross, but had

  627. one vision in mind, and it was your

  628. face.

  629. An acknowledgement that

  630. you've got an opportunity to spend

  631. eternity [music] with him.

  632. A reverence starts surrender, friends.

  633. And that's what I want to give people an

  634. opportunity.

  635. Opportunity of surrender.

  636. Saying, "Lord, I can't do this in my own

  637. strength,

  638. but I need you."

  639. So, with every head bowed and eye

  640. closed,

  641. no one looking around,

  642. is an opportunity to come into right

  643. standing with Jesus this morning.

  644. Whether you've done this for

  645. before,

  646. or this might be the first time.

  647. If you're saying, "Lord, uh Luke, I I I

  648. need access to what you're talking

  649. about." Friends, it's really simple.

  650. Would you

  651. >> [music]

  652. >> surrender your life to King Jesus? If

  653. that's you, you want to say yes to Jesus

  654. either for the first time, [music]

  655. or you know in your heart that you've

  656. walked away from him, and you need to

  657. recommit your life to the Lord today.

  658. Would [music] you say yes? On the count

  659. of three, one. Friend, have the courage

  660. to say yes to him today.

  661. Two, for the joy set before him, he

  662. endured the cross, and that joy was you.

  663. This moment he had in mind. Three,

  664. >> [music]

  665. >> if that's you, would you be bold enough?

  666. Hands up, going in the back already.

  667. Bold enough

  668. to say yes to Jesus? You're not raising

  669. your hand to me.

  670. You're raising it to King Jesus.

  671. An outward posture of what's happening

  672. internal.

  673. Reverence starts with surrender.

  674. Anybody else [music] want to say yes to

  675. Jesus today?

  676. Another hand up here. Anybody else?

  677. >> [applause]

  678. >> Another hand in the middle. Friends, I

  679. will wait.

  680. Another hand over here.

  681. Life of reverence starts with surrender.

  682. Anybody else want to say yes to Jesus

  683. today.

  684. Then as a church family we're going to

  685. say this prayer out loud whether you've

  686. raised your hand

  687. >> [music]

  688. >> or not, but you know in your heart you

  689. want to say yes to Jesus today then

  690. friend repeat this prayer after me and

  691. as a church we're going to pray it with

  692. you. [music] Say, "Dear Lord Jesus

  693. thank you

  694. for dying on the cross for me.

  695. Thank you for the forgiveness of sins.

  696. Thank you that I'm now a new creation.

  697. Jesus [music]

  698. I pray

  699. would you reveal yourself to me

  700. in a new manner."

  701. And all God's people said

  702. Amen.
