  1. isn't what we build for ourselves. It's

  2. what we leave behind for others. Every

  3. year, our church sets aside a season to

  4. refocus, to steward what God has placed

  5. in our hands and to give it forward. We

  6. call it legacy. It's a journey of

  7. faithful generosity, a posture of trust

  8. in our God who causes us to dream

  9. audaciously big. A choice to invest in

  10. something we may never see for the sake

  11. of people we may never meet in a world

  12. that desperately needs more of Jesus.

  13. Because what God builds through his

  14. people is never just for us in the here

  15. and now. It's for our future church,

  16. city, nation, and world. This month we

  17. step in for the year ahead to pray, to

  18. give, to trust God for more than we

  19. could build alone.

  20. Welcome to Legacy.

  21. >> Welcome everybody. Sydney Harbor Bridge,

  22. the location for our message today on

  23. legacy. Can I honor Sanjie and Jocelyn

  24. today? our location pastors. What an

  25. amazing job they're doing. Loving

  26. people, loving the Lord. I also want to

  27. honor all of you for making room for new

  28. people. As we've gone to two services,

  29. God is filling up those services. We're

  30. seeing people getting saved, lives being

  31. changed. It's just wonderful to see what

  32. God is doing in Hills. And it's because

  33. of you, your sacrifice, your love for

  34. God, inviting people, giving, praying.

  35. God is moving at Hills. Thank you. God

  36. bless you all. Today we're going to

  37. start with our word for the year, which

  38. is make room. And we get this from

  39. Isaiah 54:2. The word of God says,

    Isaiah 54:2

  40. "Enlarge the sight of your tent." The

  41. amplified says, "Make room for more

  42. children." In Isaiah 54, God is speaking

  43. prophetically to Israel. And he's using

  44. the image of a barren woman. God calls

  45. her to step out, enlarge her dwelling

  46. place for children she does not have.

  47. It's amazing that she would make room

  48. for kids that she doesn't have. That's

  49. faith. In fact, Hebrews 1:11 says,

    Hebrews 1:11

  50. "Faith is the confidence in what we hope

  51. for. It's the assurance about what we do

  52. not see."

  53. We all have examples of making room in

  54. our lives. Whether it's you're in love

  55. and you think she's the one and you

  56. start saving for the big rock to ask her

  57. to marry you and she hasn't said yes

  58. yet. Or maybe you're pregnant and you're

  59. starting to renovate and you haven't had

  60. the child yet, yet you're coloring the

  61. walls and buying furniture and getting

  62. people to hand their secondhand stuff to

  63. you. Uh or maybe you need to buy shoes

  64. for your kids. You take them to Kmart

  65. and you put the shoes on and the kids

  66. say, "Mom, these shoes are too big.

  67. They're two sizes too big. And what do

  68. you say, Mom? It's okay. You'll grow

  69. into them.

  70. We're making room for the future. Our

  71. legacy series this year is about

  72. building something for the future.

  73. Making room for the future. Why do we do

  74. this every year?

  75. Why does this matter? I mean, what's the

  76. point of this legacy series every year?

  77. Well, if we only focus on the here and

  78. now, legacy seems excessive. But we're

  79. not actually living for the here and

  80. now. We're not building for the here and

  81. now. We're actually living and building

  82. for the future. We're actually living

  83. and building for eternity. And as we

  84. give financially to legacy, we're

  85. literally making room for the future.

  86. We're making room for future generations

  87. to know and follow Jesus Christ. That's

  88. that's why we do this. So, how do we do

  89. this? How do we make room and build for

  90. the future? How do we enlarge our tent

  91. as Isaiah 54:2 says? Well, in this

    Isaiah 54:2

  92. series, we're going to learn from a

  93. great man of the Bible. His name is

  94. Joseph. and he made room for God in his

  95. life. Even after a rocky start with his

  96. brothers that wanted to kill him, he

  97. actually ended up rescuing an entire

  98. nation. This series is actually for

  99. everybody. Doesn't matter your age,

  100. doesn't matter how long you've been

  101. following the Lord. My prayer is that

  102. God will move in your life as you make

  103. room for him. As you pray and seek the

  104. Lord, what you can give over and above

  105. your normal giving to legacy. Here's

  106. what I'm believing that God will speak

  107. to you that he'll encourage you that

  108. give you the faith to do what he's

  109. asking you to do. So here's my dream, my

  110. goal, my prayer at the end of the day.

  111. As we make room for God, our faith will

  112. be enlarged. We'll be drawn closer to

  113. him. That's the win.

  114. God, we long for your presence

  115. to fall on this earth.

  116. We bring our repentance,

  117. surrender to you.

  118. We lay down distractions,

  119. agendas remove.

  120. We just want your spirit.

  121. So we're making room.

  122. We need a fresh outpouring

  123. of your spirit.

  124. Lord God, our hearts are burning just to

  125. know you more. You alone are worthy, oh

  126. we're longing

  127. for. Come have your way. Spirit, come

  128. out your way.

  129. Spirit of the living God, breathe on us.

  130. You're all we want. Fireful

  131. once again. Holy Spirit, come on in.

  132. Spirit of the living God, breathe on us.

  133. You're all we want. Firefall

  134. once again. Holy Spirit, come on in.

  135. Holy Spirit, come on in. Holy Spirit,

  136. come on in. Holy Spirit, come on in.

  137. We need a fresh outpouring

  138. of your spirit.

  139. Lord, God, our hearts are burning just

  140. to know you for you alone are worthy all

  141. we're longing

  142. for. Come have your way.

  143. Come have your way.

  144. Genesis 37.

  145. It all started with a dream.

  146. One night, Joseph had a dream. And when

  147. he told his brothers about it, they

  148. hated him more than ever. Listen to this

  149. dream. He said, "We're out in the field

  150. tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly, my

  151. bundles stood up

  152. and your bundles all gathered around and

  153. bowed low before mine." Probably not

  154. something the brothers are going to want

  155. to hear. Verse eight, his brothers

  156. responded, "So you think you're going to

  157. be our king, do you? Do you actually

  158. think you're going to reign over us?

  159. They hated him all the more. They

  160. already had a problem with him because

  161. he was the favorite. But now they hated

  162. him all the more because he's telling

  163. them they're going to bow down to him

  164. because his dream and the way he talked

  165. about them." Uh, this dream that Joseph

  166. had changed his life. He was never the

  167. same. It set him on a path that would

  168. actually end up making him the second

  169. most powerful person on the planet. He

  170. would rescue his family and an entire

  171. nation of starvation. And furthermore,

  172. future generations and wealth were

  173. secured. All because of a dream. It all

  174. started with a dream. So today, what's

  175. your dream? What's your dream? Maybe

  176. it's time to dream again. Maybe it's

  177. time to resurrect a dream that God had

  178. placed in your hearts many years ago.

  179. Maybe it's time to seek the Lord for a

  180. dream. It all starts with a dream. Now,

  181. the Sydney Harbor Bridge is one of the

  182. most iconic structures in Australia.

  183. It's instantly recognizable from all

  184. over the world. It took eight years to

  185. build, was completed in 1932 with a cost

  186. of over a billion dollars in today's

  187. value. In the first year, 11,000

  188. vehicles crossed it. That's less than 7%

  189. of its capacity. Remember that. Today,

  190. not 11,000, but 169,000 vehicles cross

  191. it every day. 480 trains. So, here's

  192. where the story becomes amazing. And

  193. here's the point and the reason why

  194. we're highlighting the Sydney Harbor

  195. Bridge. In 1930, there were only 169,000

  196. private vehicles registered in the

  197. entire state of New South Wales. The

  198. Harbor Bridge was built with a far

  199. greater capacity than was needed at the

  200. time. They were clearly building for the

  201. future. That's legacy.

  202. In the story of Joseph, we see God is

  203. playing the long game. Problem is, we

  204. don't play the long game. We see the

  205. immediate, but God sees generations.

  206. Living a life of legacy is about the

  207. long game. It's about generational

  208. impact. It's actually not just for what

  209. we leave people. It it it's also what we

  210. leave in people. Let me say that again.

  211. It's not just what we leave for people.

  212. But it's what we leave in people, what

  213. we deposit in people that goes beyond

  214. our life into future generations. For

  215. Joseph, legacy began when he had a

  216. dream. When Joseph saw what God wanted

  217. him to do in the future, this sermon is

  218. about dreaming. Godsized

  219. dreams. Getting hold of a God-sized

  220. vision, God-sized dream. Holy Spirit

  221. inspired dream. So what is a godly

  222. dream? Well, a godly dream is simply

  223. anything that builds the kingdom of God.

  224. Two thoughts today on a godly dream.

  225. Number one, godly dreams bring

  226. opposition. Yeah, that's the bad news.

  227. It's probably why we don't dream as much

  228. as we should. Genesis 37, here comes the

  229. dreamer. They said that's the brothers.

  230. Come on, let's kill him. We'll throw him

  231. into one of these systems. That that's a

  232. well in the Old Testament. And then we

  233. can tell our father a wild animal has

  234. eaten him. And then we'll see what

  235. becomes of his dreams. The brothers,

  236. they tried to kill the dream. Talk about

  237. a dream killer. Have you ever had a

  238. great idea?

  239. You ever had a dream and you're so

  240. excited you told someone and they

  241. laughed at you? They they kind of were

  242. like Joseph's brothers. They were dream

  243. killers. When I told my family I was

  244. leaving being a builder and I was going

  245. to become a pastor uh with five little

  246. kids, they weren't excited. They're

  247. actually horrified. I was excited. I

  248. thought I'd heard from the Lord and

  249. instead of being encouraged, I got

  250. ridiculed. I'll never forget what one of

  251. the family members said. It still haunts

  252. me to this day. Why on earth would you

  253. do that? Those words have just rung and

  254. echoed when things are going tough,

  255. things aren't working out. Oh my god,

  256. did I really hear from you? Dreams need

  257. to be protected.

  258. They need to be nurtured. They need to

  259. be able to grow. We see in Matthew 7:6,

    Matthew 7:6

  260. Jesus says, "Don't throw your pearls to

  261. pigs. They'll trample the pearls, then

  262. turn and attack you." And Jesus said

  263. this so that we would use discernment,

  264. recognizing that not every heart is

  265. ready to receive what we have to say.

  266. And as believers, we're called to share

  267. truth and our dreams and wisdom into

  268. prepared hearts that are open and

  269. humble. So, Joseph finds himself at odds

  270. with his brothers to the point where he

  271. wanted to kill him. Now, no doubt Joseph

  272. could have been wiser, more mature in

  273. the way he shared his dreams. And our

  274. talents and our knowledge that they come

  275. from God. And so, it's always more

  276. appropriate to thank God for them rather

  277. than brag about them. So, every time,

  278. every opportunity, always give God the

  279. credit. So, Joseph faced opposition.

  280. He's 17 years old when he dreams this

  281. dream. Next, sold into slavery, spends

  282. years in prison after being falsely

  283. accused. 22

  284. years later, his brothers come to get

  285. grain and bow down before him. The dream

  286. is fulfilled.

  287. The story of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

  288. John Bradfield, he was the chief

  289. proponent and lead lead engineer of the

  290. Sydney Harbor Bridge, faced significant

  291. opposition on multiple fronts. For

  292. decades, governments debated whether the

  293. bridge was even necessary. Critics

  294. argued it was too costly and it was not

  295. needed, that the fairies were fine. The

  296. Great Depression intensified

  297. opposition. Many questioning the

  298. spending during economic hardships. Uh

  299. people feared it would disrupt the

  300. harbor. It would be unsafe and that the

  301. bridge would fall into the water. There

  302. were concerns that the steel monster

  303. would ruin the visual impact of the

  304. Sydney harour. Engineers and architects,

  305. they disagreed over design options. Some

  306. said it needs to be candle lever. Others

  307. said it needs to be an arch. There was

  308. confliction between local and overseas

  309. designers. Some critics argued that

  310. Australia lacked the expertise to build

  311. it. 23 years of wasting time, delays,

  312. approvals, redesigns, and negotiations

  313. before building even started. Dreaming

  314. brings opposition.

  315. In fact, if you aren't facing

  316. opposition, you're probably not dreaming

  317. the way God wants you. Don't be

  318. discouraged.

  319. Don't allow the setbacks of your dream

  320. to take you off course. Allow the

  321. message of Joseph to keep you on track,

  322. on purpose. That dream may be a small

  323. seed in your heart, but write it down.

  324. Nurture it. Pray over it. Talk to people

  325. who can encourage you. Don't quit on

  326. your God dream. Number one, godly dreams

  327. bring opposition. Number two, godly

  328. dreams draw us closer to God. So, Joseph

  329. sold into slavery and he ends up in

  330. Egypt. In chapter 39:E1,

  331. Joseph was taken to Egypt by the

  332. Ishelite traders. It's after his

  333. brothers had thrown him in the pit and

  334. he was purchased by Piper, an Egyptian

  335. officer. Piper was captain of the guard

  336. for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. So,

  337. Joseph ends up in a foreign land. He's

  338. away from family. And at this point, it

  339. seems his dreams are further away than

  340. ever. Yet, we find he's closer to the

  341. Lord than ever.

  342. Strange how in the hardship and the

  343. distance of his dream becoming a

  344. reality, he actually draws closer to

  345. God. And that can happen for you and I.

  346. Even in the hardships and the

  347. difficulties, the opposition, there's an

  348. opportunity for all of us that we can

  349. draw closer to God. We see in chapter 39

  350. alone. Three times the words are used,

  351. the Lord was with Joseph. The Lord was

  352. with Joseph. In verse three, Piper

  353. noticed this and realized that the Lord

  354. was with Joseph, giving him success in

  355. everything he did. Then Piper's wife

  356. tried to seduce Joseph and when he

  357. refused, she falsely accused him in his

  358. throne in prison. Next verse 21, the

  359. Lord was with Joseph. Again, those words

  360. are said in the prison and showed him

  361. his faithful love. God is faithful to

  362. us. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite

  363. with the prison warden in the worst

  364. possible place, the prison where it

  365. seemed like the dream had died. His life

  366. was over. We find Joseph is close to the

  367. Lord, which brings favor on his life.

  368. Finally, verse 23, the warden had no

  369. more worries because Joseph took care of

  370. everything. No more worries, mate. Bit

  371. of Australian in scripture in the

  372. Hebrew. No more worries. The Lord was

  373. with him and caused everything he did to

  374. succeed. You know, maybe it seems that

  375. you are farther away than ever from your

  376. dream or where you hoped or wanted to

  377. be. Maybe you wanted to be married. You

  378. wanted to have children.

  379. You wanted to own a home.

  380. You wanted to have a career.

  381. And like Joseph, you feel trapped maybe

  382. in a prison or in a pit. Can I encourage

  383. you today? You're not alone. Someone

  384. needs to hear this today. You're not

  385. alone. You're not alone. In the

  386. desperation

  387. for Joseph, all alone in the pit in the

  388. prison, he drew close to the Lord. The

  389. Lord was with him. Today, God is with

  390. you. You may not see it. You may not

  391. feel it. But the truth is, you have not

  392. been forgotten. God has not passed you

  393. by. You may feel you've been put on the

  394. shelf or abandoned or misunderstood or

  395. taken advantage of or been a victim or

  396. bullied or hurt. But God never forgets.

  397. God always remembers. Hebrews 13:5, he

    Hebrews 13:5

  398. says, "I'll never leave you. I'll never

  399. forsake you. When things go bad, there's

  400. nowhere to turn. God is with you. He'll

  401. never leave you. He'll never forsake

  402. you. Even when everyone else does, God

  403. will never leave you. And my prayer,

  404. this legacy series, you'll draw close to

  405. God as you pursue him and pray and think

  406. and dream. You will draw closer to him.

  407. Let God draw you closer to him in this

  408. series to trust him, exercise your

  409. faith, to depend on him.

  410. If you can do the dream on your own,

  411. it's probably not a God-sized dream. So

  412. the Lord was with Joseph and made a way

  413. for him. In chapter 40:39,

  414. Pharaoh said to Joseph, since God has

  415. revealed the meaning of the dream to

  416. you, clearly no one else is intelligent

  417. or wise as you are. Verse 40, you will

  418. be in charge of my court and all my

  419. people will take orders from you. Only I

  420. sitting on the throne will have a higher

  421. rank than you. God

  422. supernaturally

  423. allows Joseph to interpret Pharaoh's

  424. dream. God made a way and God made a way

  425. for his dream to come to pass. I had a

  426. dream when I was maybe 25

  427. um years of age. I was newly married,

  428. first year of marriage, and we went to

  429. this little church in Canes, and the

  430. pastor was having a fundraising program

  431. for a building. We didn't have any

  432. money. We're broke, mate. We're just

  433. married, you know, spent all the money

  434. on the honeymoon to Bali and came back

  435. with nothing. And I was just stirred in

  436. my heart to give, but I didn't have any

  437. money. Well, part of my job was I got

  438. bonuses on the projects. I was a project

  439. manager, a builder, and if there was

  440. profit left over, I would get a profit,

  441. a share of that. So, I was looking at

  442. the job in the following year and and

  443. there was a chance I would make 20K um

  444. as a bonus. And so, I said to Bonnie,

  445. "Look, let's let's pledge and commit

  446. some of this money." So, what we said

  447. is, "Let's give half to the Lord uh

  448. $10,000."

  449. And so, we hadn't made the money, but we

  450. made this commitment. So, here's what

  451. happened.

  452. Every day from that day on, I was

  453. praying, "God, come on. Help me to run

  454. this project better. God, bring your

  455. favor on this project. God, I draw close

  456. to you. I'm in there praying. I'm

  457. believing. Uh I'm I'm asking for God's

  458. favor. Great subbies, help us to buy

  459. materials at a discounted cost. I'm

  460. praying. I'm believing. I'm going for

  461. it. What it actually did, it was a

  462. turning point in my life. It drew me

  463. closer to God. Um I it wasn't a billion

  464. dollar bridge. It was only 10K. It was

  465. it was massive amount for me at that

  466. time. But looking back, that dream

  467. impacted my relationship with God. It

  468. was instrumental in me putting God first

  469. in my business and my life.

  470. I'm not sure I'd be here today

  471. without that dream. I'm not sure I'd be

  472. pastoring today. It put a dependence. It

  473. put a trust. It it tied me closer to the

  474. Lord. And I just wonder, what does God

  475. want to do in your life through a dream?

  476. What does God want to birth,

  477. a trust, a faith that you're here on

  478. this planet for a purpose, something

  479. greater than yourself, that God wants to

  480. do something through you that will

  481. impact generations for eternity. You

  482. know, that little bit of money that

  483. Bonnie and I gave, we ended up able to

  484. give that $10,000 to that church. It was

  485. actually instrumental in them buying a

  486. building, the very building where Ken's

  487. location meets today, where hundreds of

  488. people hear the gospel. I wonder what

  489. God wants to do through you. First, I

  490. want to share about God's dream for you.

  491. And God's dream is that you would be

  492. saved, that no one would perish. This

  493. dream actually sent God to send his son

  494. Jesus Christ to this earth to be saved.

  495. And his dream is no one would perish.

  496. And I want to ask you today, do you know

  497. Christ? Have you surrendered your life

  498. to him? Is he your Lord and your Savior?

  499. God's dream is you would be saved. God's

  500. dream is you would have a relationship

  501. with God through Jesus Christ. God's

  502. dream is that you would live for him on

  503. purpose on mission. And so with eyes

  504. closed and heads bowed, if that's you

  505. today, you want Jesus Christ to be your

  506. Lord and Savior. You want to surrender

  507. your life to him. You want to respond to

  508. the dream of the father in heaven that

  509. loves you and knows you. Would you say

  510. yes to him today with eyes closed and

  511. heads bowed on the count of three? If

  512. that's you, you want Jesus to be your

  513. Lord and Savior. You want him to save

  514. you and rescue you. Would you say yes

  515. today? Eyes closed, heads bowed, and the

  516. count of three. One, two, three, just

  517. raise up your hand. Just say, "Yeah, I I

  518. want to be saved. I want Jesus to be my

  519. Lord." I want to say just raise it up

  520. high all across the auditorium. That's

  521. you. This is why you're here. God's

  522. dream. The Holy Spirit is drawing you.

  523. He knows you. He's calling you. Would

  524. you say yes to him? Would you raise your

  525. hand right wherever you are? Say yes to

  526. the Lord as we see hands going up all

  527. over the place. Can we all pray this

  528. prayer together out loud? Jesus, say it

  529. with me. Jesus,

  530. forgive me of my sins. be my Lord and my

  531. Savior.

  532. Change me. Help me to follow you and to

  533. serve you all the days of my life. Come

  534. on, church. Can we celebrate with those

  535. people that made that decision today?

  536. Well, we have a dream and that is in

  537. legacy to preach the gospel. In fact,

  538. Jesus says, "I must preach the good

  539. news." Personally, I'm driven to preach

  540. the gospel. Uh, I I live to preach the

  541. gospel. Um, I I was born to preach the

  542. gospel. I'm compelled to preach the

  543. gospel. In fact, Paul says this in 1

    1 Corinthians 9:16

  544. Corinthians 9:16. Yet, preaching the

  545. good news is not something I can boast

  546. about. I am compelled by God to do it.

  547. How terrible for me if I didn't preach

  548. the gospel at Elevation. We want to

  549. preach the gospel. And that's really the

  550. driving force for a legacy this year in

  551. our church, our city, our nation, and

  552. our world. And so let's look at our

  553. church. In our church, we want to be

  554. debtree so we can secure the gospel

  555. being preached for future generations.

  556. We want to provide training and

  557. development for our staff so they can be

  558. more effective in leading people to

  559. Jesus Christ. Uh we want to invest in

  560. outreach opportunities to see more

  561. people come to church, to see more

  562. people hear the good news of Jesus

  563. Christ. In our city, we want to share

  564. the gospel to the homeless. We want to

  565. give those suffering domestic violence

  566. hope in Christ. We want to help those in

  567. financial crisis, the widows, the

  568. orphans, the foreigners. As we take care

  569. of their physical needs, we can then

  570. take care of their spiritual needs by

  571. preaching the gospel. in our nation. We

  572. want to preach the good news in primary

  573. schools, high schools and universities

  574. to religious instruction, chapency and

  575. red frogs. And we want to plant more

  576. churches including a dream in Paramata

  577. so the gospel can be preached in our

  578. world. We want to preach the good news

  579. in our barley orphanages. We want to

  580. train pastors to plant churches in the

  581. South Pacific through our Solomon Island

  582. Bible College. And finally, by sending

  583. spirit-led,

  584. godanointed,

  585. gospeldriven worship to the four corners

  586. of the earth through our worship

  587. ministry, Southland. 1 Timothy 6:17,

    1 Timothy 6:17

  588. command those who are rich, let's face

  589. it, we're all rich. Command those who

  590. are rich to do good, to be rich in good

  591. deeds, and

  592. be generous and willing to share. God

  593. bless.
