  1. Wait to remember the message and carry it with you throughout the

  2. week. If you have your Bibles, please

  3. take them and turn to John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  4. If you're new to the Bible, John is there study notes in the back

  5. of this Bible. So it's about 80% or so through

  6. your Bible. It's in the New Testament before

  7. Acts and after Matthew, Mark, Luke and again before Acts and

  8. John is the the account of the disciple or the apostle John,

  9. who was a follower of Jesus. And John writes his account of

  10. the teachings of Jesus, the life of Jesus.

  11. And he has more to say about the final days of Jesus's life

  12. before he's crucified. And so it's I love that each of

  13. the disciples that writes and Luke, Luke, a physician that

  14. became a Christian, they write well in different perspectives

  15. about the life and burial, death, resurrection of Jesus.

  16. So this is John and it's halfway through, roughly halfway through

  17. his book. But there's much that Jesus is

  18. going to pray and say, and he'll have lots to say about the the

  19. crucifixion of Jesus and again, the resurrection.

  20. But we're going to start in verse 16 and Jesus says in verse

  21. 16, And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another

  22. helper. Can everyone say with me,

  23. helper, helper to be with you forever?

  24. Even the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because

  25. it neither sees him nor knows him.

  26. But you know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

  27. He dwells with you and will be in you.

  28. This morning I'm going to continue teaching about the Holy

  29. Spirit. This is our 4th week for not in

  30. the row, but the fourth time of teaching about Holy Spirit

  31. recently. And this morning I want to talk

  32. to you particularly about the attributes of the Holy Spirit,

  33. The attributes of the Holy Spirit.

  34. Let me pray for us, God. It's so good to be together with

  35. our church family. And we pray that You would

  36. supernaturally speak to us now in this time.

  37. And our hearts are hungry for Your word and for Your truth.

  38. And so we open our minds and as an act of worship, we say, Holy

  39. Spirit speak to us and grow us in our understanding and lead

  40. us, we pray. And when we leave here shortly,

  41. we pray that our love for you and our awe for you Holy Spirit

  42. will be more than it is right now.

  43. So we open our hearts in Jesus name and everyone together

  44. loudly said Amen and Amen. Now I'm really hoping I

  45. mentioned this last week, but I'm mentioning again is that I'm

  46. really hoping to build within our church a fluid flow of

  47. speaking about the Holy Spirit. There are many Christian

  48. traditions that hardly reference the Holy Spirit.

  49. They might talk about the Father and the Son, maybe in their

  50. creeds they might mention the Holy Ghost.

  51. But many Christian traditions have gotten sideways when it

  52. comes to having an understanding of the Holy Spirit and why?

  53. Well, it's because there are some Christian traditions that

  54. have kind of hijacked, if you will, and he kind of have taken

  55. maybe some extreme thinking beliefs about the Holy Spirit

  56. and, and about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the baptism of

  57. the Holy Spirit. So we're navigating through

  58. because I feel very strongly that if we don't have a good

  59. understanding of who the Holy Spirit is, then we won't know

  60. how to relate to God because I'll break down even more this

  61. morning. But the way that the

  62. dispensation, the period of time that we're in right now is a

  63. period where God is with us as the Holy Spirit, OK, So many

  64. Christian traditions, they just shy away from talking about the

  65. Holy Spirit. Or if they do talk about the

  66. Holy Spirit, maybe they think that they have the corner market

  67. on certain gifts or certain attributes of the Holy Spirit.

  68. But I want to show you well that all Christian believers should

  69. have an awareness and a relationship and a love for the

  70. Holy Spirit. So we're diving deep in these

  71. weeks and I want you to be able to talk about it well.

  72. I want you to be able to sit with your family members and

  73. those are The Who were friends and say, This is why I love the

  74. Holy Spirit. That's why I love God and the

  75. Trinity for being the Father, the Son, and the we Spirit and

  76. we're able to say, yes, we love Jesus and we love the Father and

  77. equally we love and have relationship with the Holy

  78. Spirit. So next week, so you know where

  79. we're going next week, I'm going to talk about grieving,

  80. quenching and blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

  81. You don't want to miss that week.

  82. That's going to be a big message.

  83. OK, so the Bible talks about grieving the Holy Spirit,

  84. quenching the Spirit of the Lord, and maybe you've heard

  85. about blaspheming the Holy Spirit as being the unpardonable

  86. sin. I'm going to address that.

  87. And then on to the weeks that after that, I'm going to talk

  88. about the gifts of the Spirit and particularly the baptism of

  89. the Holy Spirit. Now, I didn't start with the

  90. baptism of the Holy Spirit. I wanted to give you a really

  91. broad great foundation. And then I want to get around to

  92. the baptism of the Holy Spirit because some, I think in, again

  93. in Christian traditions, some have taken what we call the

  94. baptism of the Holy Spirit. And they have, they start there.

  95. And when they start there without a foundation of who the

  96. Holy Spirit is and how we interact with the Holy Spirit, I

  97. think they miss out on what should be the focus.

  98. Is the focus chasing after supernatural gifts?

  99. Supernatural, the miraculous? Well, I'll show you eventually

  100. when we get there that yes, that is one of the attributes that

  101. comes with the Holy Spirit, and yet it's a relationship with God

  102. that we chase. We don't just want the

  103. miraculous from the Holy Spirit. We want relationship and we want

  104. understanding. So before we get to the baptism

  105. of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we're

  106. talking about other characteristics and attributes

  107. of who God is as the Holy Spirit.

  108. Now, if you want to relate well with anyone, it's good to know

  109. their attributes. And I put in the note stupid

  110. English because if you write it out, is it to attribute, you

  111. know you're attributing something or is an attribute

  112. attribute or attribute? Well, we're talking about

  113. attributes, the characteristics of who God is, and it's true

  114. when it comes to parenting or your spouse or friends, and it's

  115. true of the Holy Spirit. So if you want to relate well

  116. and have good relationship with people in your life, your family

  117. members, then it's good for you to know how they're wired.

  118. And for those of us who have more than one child

  119. particularly, right, we want to understand that they're

  120. different. And how do we relate?

  121. How do we interact? Well, the point of this message

  122. and some of these weeks is really to help you grow in an

  123. understanding of how to relate and have relationship with the

  124. Holy Spirit. Now when Jesus, if we're going

  125. back to John chapter 14, Jesus says, and I will ask the Father

    John 14 chapter mention

  126. and he will give you another helper.

  127. Now it's interesting that he doesn't say he will give you a

  128. helper. He says he'll give you another

  129. helper. So when he says that God will

  130. give you another helper, well, Jesus is nodding at the fact

  131. that Jesus had been their helper.

  132. Jesus came and he, he walked with them and he taught them and

  133. he mentored them, He discipled them, He was their helper.

  134. And Jesus is pointing out here, he's saying, hey, I'll ask the

  135. Father, and he'll send you another helper in addition to

  136. me. He's going to send you another

  137. helper. And from this, what we get is

  138. that that Jesus is saying that the Holy Spirit is our helper.

  139. You want to relate to the Holy Spirit.

  140. Well, that's a good place to start to say because this is the

  141. way that Jesus introducing them. Now again, Jesus isn't

  142. mentioning some specific supernatural miraculous gift.

  143. He's saying the Father will send you a helper.

  144. So I want to show you that foundationally, when you want to

  145. relate to the Holy Spirit, start there.

  146. Start Holy Spirit, you are my helper and when you start there

  147. then from that foundation then there are the fruits and there

  148. are the gifts of the spirit that you can lean into now God is our

  149. helper is not a new theme in the New Testament.

  150. Jesus is is referencing an idea that had already been much the

  151. tradition and the Old Testament. In fact, in Psalm 54 verse four.

  152. We just finished the series on the Psalms and I'd love to

  153. connect the Old Testament and the New Testament love to

  154. connect the Psalms When the when the when the Psalms are being

  155. quoted. So when Jesus is saying, hey,

  156. the Father will send you another helper.

  157. Well, Jesus would have well known this Psalm 54 and verse 4.

  158. Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the upholder of my

  159. life. I love this passage and I'm

  160. often hesitant to do this, but I will.

  161. I'll tell you Jason, I, my wife and I wrote a song maybe six or

  162. seven years and all before we moved here.

  163. So let's say like 8 years ago. And it's called you are my

  164. helper. And you can find it on YouTube,

  165. You can find it on like Apple Music and wherever you stream

  166. music. But the course just says you,

  167. you are my helper. Come and rescue me.

  168. Come and rescue me. You.

  169. You are my helper. If I'm not playing guitar, I

  170. often cannot remember lyrics, so I don't remember how it goes

  171. from there. But if I had a guitar in my

  172. hand, it would help. OK, but the idea, we took the

  173. idea from the song from Psalm 54.

  174. And I love singing the song because it reiterates when I'm

  175. saying God, you are my helper. I'm quoting this idea from the

  176. Psalms, but I'm also aware of the fact that Jesus is a helper

  177. and He came to help us with our salvation.

  178. And then Jesus says the Father will send you another helper.

  179. And maybe to you it might seem belittling or or not majestic

  180. enough to call the Holy Spirit a helper.

  181. But that's what in the Old Testament they're calling God.

  182. And Jesus in the New Testament is saying he is your helper.

  183. So start here foundationally. Jesus introduces the Holy Spirit

  184. as the helper. Now when we look at the word

  185. that Jesus was using in this occasion, Jesus is using the

  186. Greek word. When John is writing what Jesus

  187. said, he's using the Greek word paracletos.

  188. Paracletos is the word for helper or it's sometimes

  189. translated intercessor. Sometimes it's translated

  190. counselor or consoler or advocate will get around to an

  191. occasion where that happens or comforter.

  192. OK, so this is the way this word, it's a big word,

  193. paracletos. And what's interesting is that

  194. in the Catholic tradition, they don't try to translate the word

  195. paracletos. They write it out phonetically

  196. because it's a hard word to translate when Jesus says the

  197. Holy Spirit will come and he that the Catholics, they just

  198. left it at Paracletos, but they again, spell it out

  199. phonetically. OK, it's hard to translate.

  200. And so you can miss the meaning of it when you just see, oh,

  201. he's our helper because maybe it doesn't sound profound enough.

  202. Well, yes, Jesus is saying the Holy Spirit will come and be

  203. your helper and your counselor. Isaiah said Jesus would be the

  204. mighty counselor, right? All these ideas are they come

  205. together to help us understand what the Holy Spirit is like.

  206. And when Jesus is saying the Holy Spirit will come and he

  207. will be your Paraclete, those. Well, the word para in Greek

  208. means alongside or beside. So it's where we get our word

  209. parallel from, right? If two things are parallel,

  210. they're beside each other. And a paramedic is someone who

  211. assist a doctor. A paramedic would be alongside

  212. beside a doctor or a paralegal would be somebody that helps or

  213. assist an attorney or somebody in legal matters.

  214. So when Jesus says the I'm going to ask the Father and he's going

  215. to send you another para counselor, advocate, all of

  216. these things when you relate to the Holy Spirit, this is where

  217. you start. So other translations, again, I

  218. like the ESV, but some of the new modern translations, again,

  219. they lean into these other ways of translating helper,

  220. comforter, counselor or advocate.

  221. Now another term that you might use to get an understanding of

  222. the paracletos. When Jesus says, I'm asked the

  223. Father and he'll send you the Holy Spirit as the paracletos.

  224. Another good way to look at it is like a coach.

  225. Have you ever had a great coach? Friday and Saturday and he had a

  226. coach over in Petoskey. It was a track, field, track and

  227. field coach. And sadly this coach had a

  228. stroke and at 70 years old just died in the last day.

  229. And I got to talk to the student, college student, and

  230. just I felt his heart for his coach.

  231. And certainly when someone coaches us, there's this really

  232. beautiful relationship that starts because we're learning

  233. and we're being encouraged by a coach.

  234. And for me, I was never a great athlete, but I was in high

  235. school. I did play golf.

  236. They let me on the golf team. They were super desperate.

  237. So I made the golf team and my coach's name was Coach Godwin,

  238. and he was my government teacher and he was my driver's Ed

  239. teacher. And I remember when he was

  240. teaching me driver's Ed, he had this.

  241. He must have said it to every kid, or maybe he only said it to

  242. me. But he said, Kurt, there were

  243. only two holes in that road and you hit all three of them.

  244. All three of them you hit. What are you doing, you know?

  245. So sadly, he passed away my senior year.

  246. He was on the golf course, had a heart attack, didn't know it,

  247. and went home and just gently passed away in his recliner at

  248. home. But I remember what a great

  249. impact he had teaching me government and teaching me

  250. driver's Ed and then teaching me golf when Jesus, when he's

  251. introducing the Holy Spirit as a paracletos.

  252. Jesus had been their coach and he had trained them for those

  253. three years. So in Jesus, I just really want

  254. you to get a feel of what of what Jesus is saying to them.

  255. I will ask the Father and he will send you another coach or

  256. another helper. And Jesus, they would have been

  257. confused because again, they don't get that Jesus is going to

  258. leave them. Jesus is going to depart back to

  259. heaven. So Jesus is the ultimate coach.

  260. I used to be in a situation some years ago as a musician.

  261. I was, I was, I was leading worship back then.

  262. And Long story short, but I worked at a church where they

  263. would, when we would do worship times, if you can imagine on the

  264. front row, there were like 3 people standing with legal pads.

  265. And they would, they would write out every little mistake that

  266. everyone on the worship team made.

  267. And then we would have these debrief meetings afterwards and

  268. they would list all of these mistakes that happened in the

  269. time of worship. Can you imagine that?

  270. It was really awkward and strange.

  271. And so, but the value there was in, in my opinion, in hindsight,

  272. I, I, I coined the phrase, I said he who finds the most

  273. mistakes wins. So we'd go into these meetings

  274. and was just, oh, you made this mistake and this mistake and you

  275. made this mistake and this mistake and you missed that and

  276. you missed that to the worship team.

  277. And I will tell you it really messed me up.

  278. And so I coined the phrase that they coached me to confusion and

  279. then they critiqued me to cowardice.

  280. And that's poor teaching. But look at the way that Jesus

  281. coaches and the way that the Holy Spirit, as our parity,

  282. tells how he coaches us. Jesus leads us to confidence.

  283. Romans 81 There's therefore no condemnation.

  284. He doesn't condemn. Instead, the Holy Spirit

  285. strengthens and encourages and exhorts.

  286. That's the way that Jesus coached and it's the way that

  287. the Holy Spirit coaches. And I would add to this that

  288. this is the way when I'm thinking about coaching.

  289. Jesus was also discipling A paracletos.

  290. Our helper is also a disciple, and Jesus said to us that we

  291. were to become disciplers. In Matthew 2819, Jesus says, go

  292. therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in

  293. the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

  294. Jesus is saying that the Holy Spirit is going to come and be a

  295. helper, coach, disciple. And then Jesus is saying, I'm

  296. sending you also to be a disciple.

  297. This is the fruit of having a relationship with the ultimate

  298. coach, the Holy Spirit. When we follow an after and have

  299. relationship with the Holy Spirit in that way, then we

  300. become like Him, we become like Jesus, we become like the Holy

  301. Spirit and we're able, instead of coaching people to confusion

  302. and then critiquing them to cowardice, we're unable to

  303. encourage people to grow more and more in love with Jesus.

  304. And this is what Jesus is saying.

  305. So watch, get the flow of this. Jesus comes to make disciples

  306. and then he tells us disciples to wait until the parakletos is

  307. poured out. Last week I looked at the story

  308. in Acts chapter 2 where the Holy Spirit is poured out on the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  309. disciples that were in the upper room.

  310. And you can go back and listen to that message.

  311. I won't re talk much of it, but I just want to remind you that

  312. the Holy Spirit is poured out and then the disciples become or

  313. the disciples become disciples but not until they receive the

  314. Holy Spirit that is fulfilling the prophecy of the prophet

  315. Joel. So the word paracletos is used

  316. five times by John when he's referencing Jesus, either

  317. quoting Jesus or talking about Jesus.

  318. And I want to walk you through the times where John, it's a

  319. unique word. He's the only one in the New

  320. Testament that uses the word paracletos or helper, the Holy

  321. Spirit. Yes, it's found in other places.

  322. But if the word is unique to John writing about the words of

  323. Jesus in John 1426, he's going to say it again.

  324. And Jesus, he's quoting Jesus and he says, but the Helper, the

  325. Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will

  326. teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I

  327. have said to you. So this leads us to another

  328. attribute of the Holy Spirit. You want to relate to the Holy

  329. Spirit. Well, understand this, that the

  330. Holy Spirit is our paracletos, our helper, our coach, our

  331. disciple. And now Jesus is saying the Holy

  332. Spirit is going to be your teacher.

  333. And this is beautiful. I love it.

  334. Now, whenever we think about the Holy Spirit being our teacher, I

  335. do want to clarify balance in this context because some

  336. Christians want to adopt the idea that I don't need to be

  337. around any other Christians. The Holy Spirit is my teacher.

  338. I only need the Holy Spirit. Well, that contrasts what other

  339. passages say. You need a balanced approach

  340. where you're looking and saying, OK, the Holy Spirit, yes, is

  341. teaching and leading me. And then I'm also going to find

  342. growth and discipleship in the context of being around the

  343. Christians. So watch what Paul writes in

  344. First Corinthians 212 to 13, Paul writes, Now we have

  345. received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is

  346. from God, that we might understand the things freely

  347. given us by God. So how are we going to

  348. understand things freely given to us?

  349. Well, it's the Spirit of God that's going to help us

  350. understand. And we impart this in words not

  351. taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit,

  352. interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

  353. So what Paul is saying, the Holy Spirit reveals things to us.

  354. He teaches us. He's our Paraclete to us.

  355. And we're open and eager to have that type of relationship where

  356. you wake up and you start. You can start your day saying,

  357. Holy Spirit, teach me today. You can do this as a student in

  358. school, you can do this as a parent, whatever job you have,

  359. However you're growing in the Lord.

  360. You could say Holy Spirit, I I relate to you.

  361. I look to you to be my teacher, but I'm also going to be in

  362. community with other Christians and that's what you're doing

  363. this morning. We're we're teaching and

  364. learning in context of church family and community on Hebrews

  365. 10 in the context of this. Watch what it said there.

  366. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,

  367. for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir

  368. one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet

  369. together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one

  370. another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

  371. What you find here is that even in the early church, you're

  372. getting the idea that there were some Christians who said, Oh, I

  373. don't need to meet together with other Christians, I just need

  374. the Holy Spirit. Well, it's just me and Jesus, me

  375. and the Holy Spirit. I don't need to grow.

  376. Just discouraging this choir this morning you're in church

  377. and you're here to worship. And we had such a profound time

  378. with just worshiping Jesus this morning and now you're open to

  379. learning. So as I teach my my hope is that

  380. you will get it and that you will grow in your understanding

  381. of what the Holy Spirit is like his attributes.

  382. And This is why I'm going to skip ahead of my notes here.

  383. But This is why often when when teachers are teaching, maybe

  384. you've seen this even in your own life.

  385. Maybe you've you've shared some profound.

  386. This and this and this and this and this.

  387. I don't correct them and say, oh, I didn't say that.

  388. I just go, man, the Holy Spirit must have been teaching you

  389. that. The Holy Spirit was showing you

  390. that. I can't take credit for it was

  391. me, right? The Holy Spirit was teaching in

  392. that moment. And that could happen in the

  393. context of Christians sharing truths with each other.

  394. The Holy Spirit is our teacher. And then in Colossians 3, Paul

  395. writes and he says, And let the peace of Christ rule in your

  396. hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body, and be

  397. thankful, and let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,

  398. teaching and admonishing one another and all wisdom, singing

  399. psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your

  400. hearts to God. Now today when Chase was doing

  401. announcements, we've got all these studies coming up, teen,

  402. teen women, teen men, Bible studies we're having she's doing

  403. a Bible study. Why are we doing all of these

  404. studies? Because we're trying to follow

  405. what Paul says in the book of Colossians that teach one

  406. another. And so in our church, we have

  407. our our children in Sunday school right now.

  408. They're being taught the truths of God and we'll have our fifth

  409. and 6th graders in high school and junior high upstairs.

  410. So we want teaching God's Word to be a really high value at our

  411. church, knowing that the Holy Spirit is our teacher.

  412. But he teaches through people, being in community with one

  413. another. So we are to teach and admonish

  414. one another. And we see that in the early

  415. church in Acts chapter 2, it says, and they devoted

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  416. themselves to the apostles teaching and the fellowship, to

  417. breaking of bread and the prayers.

  418. So an early value in the church in Acts was a church gathering

  419. together and teaching, focusing on the teaching of God's Word.

  420. So the Holy Spirit is our ultimate teacher, but he's going

  421. to use us in community to learn and grow.

  422. So a balanced approach is that we trust the Holy Spirit to be

  423. our ultimate teacher and then we teach each other.

  424. Now, John 1426, Jesus says to his disciples, when he says all

  425. ask the Father and he'll send the player Cletos.

  426. He says, he continues and says, and bring to your remembrance

  427. all that I have said to you. So another thing that the Holy

  428. Spirit is going to do is the Holy Spirit is going to be a

  429. reminder. Now this is a very interesting

  430. point about who the Holy Spirit is because watch what happens

  431. when the writers of the Gospels write the words of Jesus and the

  432. stories of Jesus. How did they remember so well,

  433. right? Matthew writes out like four or

  434. five chapters long, the Sermon on the Mount.

  435. How does he remember so well the words that Jesus said?

  436. Well, Jesus said the Holy Spirit will remind you of all that I've

  437. said to you. So here's what we know.

  438. When you read Scripture, understand that the accounts

  439. that the gospel writers write, they write them so well because

  440. they're inspired and reminded by the Holy Spirit.

  441. Now in first Peter 221 to build more on this idea, Peter says,

  442. for no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but

  443. men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy

  444. Spirit. So here Peter saying, even in

  445. the Old Testament it was. We give credit and honor and

  446. worship to the Holy Spirit in that way.

  447. Now, when we think about the Holy Spirit being a reminder,

  448. could you use some help with your memory?

  449. Well, the Holy Spirit is a reminder, according.

  450. He will. We will.

  451. Very good. You know the song also.

  452. OK, so I started singing along with my sons.

  453. Rock You, Rock You. And my sons were amazing.

  454. They were like, dad, how do you know this song?

  455. And I said, well, you know who sings it, right?

  456. And I was about to teach. 1526 he says, But when the

  457. helper comes, the paracletos comes, whom I will send to you

  458. from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the

  459. Father, He will bear witness about me, and you will also bear

  460. witness because you have been with me from the beginning.

  461. So when we're looking at attributes about the Holy

  462. Spirit, another attribute is that the Holy Spirit bears

  463. witness or testifies about Jesus.

  464. And then Jesus is saying you, you're going to do the same.

  465. You really filled, the Holy Spirit's going to be poured out

  466. on you and you are going to bear witness about who I am.

  467. And this should be the life of a follower of Jesus.

  468. Our lives should bear witness to the glory and the love and the

  469. salvation that comes from Jesus. And Jesus saying that the Holy

  470. Spirit's going to point to me and you, you are going to point

  471. to me. Also, Jesus prophecies in a way

  472. in Acts 18, before he ascends into heaven, after he's been

  473. crucified and buried and resurrected, he says, but you

  474. will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and

  475. you will be my witness. You will bear witness of me in

  476. Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the

  477. earth. So the Holy Spirit comes to

  478. empower us to bear witness. Maybe that's a prayer that you

  479. want to add to. Sometimes people are wondering,

  480. what do I pray? What do I say to God?

  481. How do I talk to God? Well, you can thank the Holy

  482. Spirit and pray to the Holy Spirit to say, Holy Spirit, help

  483. me bear witness. Help my life to bear witness to

  484. who Jesus is. Let me be like the Holy Spirit

  485. pointing to Jesus. This is the flow of the

  486. Christian life. Now the next time that Jesus

  487. mentions the Helper, this is John 16, seven.

  488. So it's one long discourse that John captures and Jesus says,

  489. nevertheless, I tell you the truth is it is to your advantage

  490. that I go away. For if I do not go away, the

  491. helper will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.

  492. So the Holy Spirit, when you think about, OK, the attributes

  493. of the Holy Spirit, well, the next one would be that the Holy

  494. Spirit is for our advantage. And that could sound selfish,

  495. but this is what Jesus is saying.

  496. Jesus is saying it's better for you, it's for your advantage

  497. because when the Holy Spirit comes, the Holy Spirit is going

  498. to be in all believers all over the world.

  499. And remember, Jesus is his ministry and his life.

  500. When he put on human skin, He is, He is unique to one place

  501. and moment in time. So Jesus is saying the Holy

  502. Spirit's going to come and it's better for you because the Holy

  503. Spirit can dwell and all who believe Jesus says I tell you

  504. the truth. Whenever Jesus says, you know, I

  505. tell you the truth. Everything Jesus said was true,

  506. of course. But when Jesus says I tell you

  507. the truth, it's him saying, hey, this is even more true than all

  508. the other true stuff I say. This is true.

  509. Sometimes I'll start a story by saying not all my true stories

  510. are true, but this is a true, true story, right?

  511. Jesus is kind of saying the same thing.

  512. He's saying that I tell you the truth.

  513. It's for your advantage. Now we've talked about in weeks

  514. past, I just remind you that the Holy Spirit was dwelling in the

  515. Old Testament in tents and tabernacles and temples.

  516. But now according to the New Testament, go back and listen to

  517. the message from the second week.

  518. Now according to the New Testament, we are the temple and

  519. Tabernacle of the Holy Spirit. So he it is for our advantage

  520. because now the Holy Spirit according to Jesus dwells in us.

  521. Now the last time that John uses the term paracletos is in his

  522. letter that is found towards the end of the Old Testament or New

  523. Testament. It's first John 2 verse 1.

    1 John 2:1

  524. So this is much later in John's life and watch how he uses the

  525. word here. He says, my little children, I'm

  526. writing these things to you so that you may not sin, but if

  527. anyone does sin, we have an advocate, a paracletos with the

  528. Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.

  529. So John had called the Holy Spirit the paracletos, but on

  530. this occasion now he's referencing Jesus in this way

  531. and he's saying, I'm writing to you these things because I want

  532. you to escape sin. And, and what will help you

  533. escaping sin, knowing that Jesus in heaven now is our paracletos.

  534. He's our advocate in this occasion.

  535. The ESV translators don't say he's our helper.

  536. They say he's our advocate. He's advocating with us like

  537. maybe an attorney would do before God.

  538. He's reminding God of the sacrifice, the Father God.

  539. He's reminding the Father about the forgiveness that has been

  540. given to us through the cross and the burial and the

  541. resurrection. Now we relate to Jesus as if

  542. he's advocating with the Father for our forgiveness and

  543. acceptance. So when we worship and we pray,

  544. we can thank God. This morning I intentionally

  545. knowing that this is where I was going, I intentionally this

  546. morning sing a lot of songs about who Jesus is.

  547. We sang All hail King Jesus, we saying I believe in the

  548. resurrection. Every song was kind of this

  549. really thematic song in the mighty name of Jesus.

  550. OK, so I wanted to tie the message here to the songs that

  551. we sang because we've been singing songs on the weekends

  552. that kind of help us relate to the Holy Spirit.

  553. But here I'm ending with the Holy Spirit points to Jesus.

  554. And how do we relate to the Holy Spirit?

  555. What we relate by knowing the attributes of the Holy Spirit.

  556. And then we remember, where is Jesus now again?

  557. He's in heaven with the Father and he will return.

  558. There will be a second coming of Jesus and when he comes back, he

  559. will rule and reign forever. Then we will be with him in all

  560. of his glory. But for now, in the time that

  561. we're in the dispensation, it's the Holy Spirit that being God

  562. that we relate to and grow to know.

  563. So when we worship and pray, we can thank God the Father, the

  564. Son, and the Holy Spirit for the attributes that have been

  565. revealed to us. So let me close with a couple

  566. questions, and these are in your notes that encourage you to take

  567. them home with you and maybe wrestle through these in the

  568. next couple days. How well do you know the Holy

  569. Spirit and how well do you know His attributes?

  570. How well you know His attributes will determine your relationship

  571. with Him. And then I would say, can you

  572. pray practical prayers of thanks, thanking and receiving

  573. God for these attributes that are revealed to us?

  574. And then I would say, do you live a life where you're aware

  575. that the Holy Spirit and are you grateful for it?

  576. That Jesus and the Holy Spirit, they are our helpers, our para

  577. cletos. When we live aware of that, then

  578. it takes us to different depths in our relationship with Jesus.

  579. It's just not earning, you know, getting salvation through the

  580. cross of Jesus and having, you know, a ticket of sorts to

  581. heaven eternally. No, it's far more than that.

  582. The life that we live now can be lived in light of the attributes

  583. of the Holy Spirit and relationship that we can have

  584. with him. Let me pray for us.

  585. God. I thank you again.

  586. I'm just in awe and amazed at how Scripture connects these

  587. ideas. I love finding those moments

  588. when it's like, Oh yeah, John and his letter was using the

  589. same word that he used in the Gospel story that he wrote.

  590. And I love seeing the Old Testament in Psalms talking

  591. about you being our helper God, and other moments in the letters

  592. where it's all connected. And it's such that it shows even

  593. more the validity and the inspiration of the word of God,

  594. your word God. And so we pray that you would

  595. grow us in our relationship with the Holy Spirit in the weeks to

  596. come. Even the more let us have Great

  597. Expectations on what else we can learn and grow as we continue to

  598. study the Holy Spirit in Jesus name.

  599. Now before we go quickly, I just want to give an invitation to

  600. anyone here who might have been wrestling with the claims of

  601. Christianity, and yet you've not taken that step yet to say I

  602. want to surrender my life to Christ.

  603. And what does that take? It doesn't take a great

  604. understanding necessarily of all of our creeds or our beliefs,

  605. but it does take an understanding that God wants

  606. relationship with you. And in order to have a

  607. relationship with you, God himself put on human skin as

  608. Jesus and came to live a perfect life and then to offer himself

  609. as a sacrifice to pay for our sin that separated us from God.

  610. So Jesus is crucified, that pays the penalty for our sin.

  611. Then he's buried and then he's resurrected.

  612. And in in his resurrection, it defeats death and sin and hell

  613. in the grave. And so now we can have

  614. relationship with God through what Jesus did on the cross when

  615. he was buried and when he was crucified.

  616. And so the invitation is for you to say, Jesus, I surrender the

  617. lordship of my life to you. I want to follow after you.

  618. And then the next step is baptism, which we will have

  619. coming up here in the next couple months.

  620. But in the meantime, you just say, Jesus, I want to receive

  621. you as my Savior. I want to turn for my own sin,

  622. and I want to receive your salvation and forgiveness.

  623. And you can receive that this morning.

  624. So I want to pray with you. And then I encourage you to tell

  625. somebody, tell a friend, a family member, you could tell

  626. me. You can e-mail me and say, hey,

  627. I've made this decision and this commitment to become a follower

  628. of Jesus and let me pray. And then I would encourage you

  629. to echo this prayer that I pray as a acceptance of the salvation

  630. of Jesus. You can pray.

  631. Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus.

  632. And Jesus, I thank you that you offered yourself as a pen.

  633. You took my penalty, You paid for my sin and the sin of all

  634. those who want to receive you. So I surrendered the lordship of

  635. my life to you. And I say I want relationship

  636. with you. And when I say that, it means

  637. that the Holy Spirit will come and dwell in me.

  638. So Holy Spirit, I welcome you and I receive you and Jesus I

  639. turn away from my own sin and selfishness and I say I want to

  640. grow in your ways. I want to grow in relationship

  641. and love with you. So come and reign in my life.

  642. I pray I receive you as my Savior.

  643. Thank you for eternity that I get starting now.

  644. It doesn't have to just wait. Eternal life doesn't start after

  645. we die. Instead it starts now on us.

  646. You put eternal life in us now. Fulfillment, purpose and

  647. meaning. So we received that in Jesus

  648. name and everyone together said Amen and Amen.

  649. Thank you for being here today so much.

  650. Remember, if you're available to come back after the second

  651. service and assist us in putting some decorations away, that

  652. would be great. Otherwise, we will see you

  653. ladies on Wednesday night for your gathering.

  654. And before you go, if you'll stand with me, I want to say a

  655. blessing over you, if you will prepare your heart to receive

  656. this blessing. And now may the Lord bless you

  657. and keep you, and may he make his face to shine upon you.

  658. And may the joy of the Lord that is unspeakable and full of

  659. glory, may it abound to you. And may the peace of God that

  660. passes all understanding, may it surprise you in the midst of all

  661. of the challenges that life brings.

  662. And then may the mercies of the Lord, in other words, the

  663. forgiveness of God, that is new every morning.

  664. May it be especially new to you now in your mornings to come.

  665. And now may the Lord Jesus Christ guard your heart and your

  666. mind, your salt, and you are light.

  667. Go now and be salt and light unto the world.

  668. You are blessed. We'll see you soon.
