    John 12 chapter mention

  21. If you're new to the Bible, John is about like 8090% towards the

  22. back of your Bible in the New Testament after Matthew, Mark,

  23. and Luke and before the book of Acts.

  24. So John chapter 12, and know that there are notes on the back

    John 12 chapter mention

  25. tables there that you could grab it.

  26. Make use of those, whether as I'm teaching or maybe you want

  27. to grab them on your way out and use them as a devotional tool

  28. and the week to come. And then also there are palms.

  29. So please take one home with you today, especially after the

  30. message, and hopefully it will help you remember what we're

  31. talking about this morning. OK, so if you have your Bibles,

  32. John chapter 12 and we're going to start in verse 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  33. And of course, today is Palm Sunday.

  34. So Christians all over the planet are celebrating the

  35. triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem some 2000 years ago,

  36. OK. And so we are also celebrating

  37. it today. And so this is the apostle John,

  38. a disciple of Jesus, and he writes in chapter 12, verse 12

  39. the next day. This is after he had been with

  40. Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha, and there was a plot

  41. to try to kill Lazarus between the Pharisees, not only Jesus,

  42. but they thought about trying to kill Lazarus also because the

  43. the miracle of him being resurrected, right?

  44. And so the Pharisees don't like that Jesus is gaining favor with

  45. his followers. And so they have this plot.

  46. So the next day after that, the large crowd that had come to the

  47. feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

  48. And so they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet

  49. him, crying out, Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the

  50. name of the Lord, even the king of Israel.

  51. And Jesus found a young donkey, and I'll tell you more of that

  52. story. And he sat on it just as it is

  53. written. Fear not, daughter of Zion,

  54. behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt.

  55. This morning. I want to talk to you about the

  56. Passover and palms and I want to talk to you about the past and

  57. present future of each. So I want to connect some dots

  58. today and let you know what there will be like at the end,

  59. Especially there's there's an idea about palms and worship and

  60. we'll get to that at the end. But this morning, so the past,

  61. the present future of Passover's and palms, let me pray for us.

  62. Heavenly Father, we've come today to connect with you, to

  63. have Kona NIA, to have fellowship with you and to

  64. fellowship with each other. And we've sung our songs of

  65. worship to you and we believe that you've heard our songs.

  66. We've lifted up prayers to you even just being together in in

  67. fellowship. The Konenia of it is honoring to

  68. you. And now we open our hearts and

  69. our minds to your truth and to your word.

  70. We thank you for Scripture and the way that you reveal yourself

  71. there. And so today that on this Palm

  72. Sunday, especially Jesus, as we look to your triumphal entry,

  73. grow us in our understanding and then ready us even the more to

  74. be ready for worship on Friday night, Good Friday, and then

  75. readiest to come to celebrate your resurrection next Sunday

  76. morning. We pray this in Jesus name and

  77. everyone loudly together said Amen and Amen.

  78. All right, so this is John's account of that Palm Sunday,

  79. when Jesus enters into the city of Jerusalem.

  80. And it is a feast, It is a Passover feast.

  81. So this is a holiday that the Jews would celebrate once a

  82. year, and they're commemorating what had happened in Exodus.

  83. OK, And we'll get around to that story.

  84. So what's curious about Palm Sunday is that it's such a big

  85. event in the life of Jesus that that each of the gospel writers,

  86. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, all speak of it.

  87. And that's not true of every event in the life of Jesus.

  88. There were some events that were only maybe mentioned in one or

  89. two of the Gospels, but in this occasion, all four of the

  90. writers mention it at length. And so this morning what I'm

  91. going to do is I'm going to look at each one's account of this

  92. Palm Sunday and see how they're different and see how they

  93. complement each other and hopefully walk away with an

  94. understanding of how it's meaningful to us today.

  95. The celebration that Jesus experienced when he came into

  96. Jerusalem. Now, I was in Jerusalem 15 years

  97. ago and I can remember just being where, you know, you can

  98. still go to at least close to where the gate would have been

  99. that that Jesus enters into the city.

  100. And, and what's curious is that as it's on the same day,

  101. probably as Jesus is coming in one of the gates, the eastern

  102. gate, then the western gate, it would have been such that Pilot

  103. also would have been having a parade of sorts.

  104. But we think that the parade that Jesus is experiencing was

  105. more people there. And they were again crying out,

  106. Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  107. So I want to break down what is happening this event.

  108. What are they saying? What does it mean?

  109. How does Jesus receive it? How does Jesus respond to the

  110. worship? And then again, the future, what

  111. are going to be the future of palms in our lives when it comes

  112. to worshipping Jesus? OK, so I'll get back to John's

  113. account, but first let's go to Mark's account.

  114. So Mark, we believe this is actually the story as Peter

  115. would have given it. So we think Mark wrote down the

  116. story as Peter would have told him.

  117. OK, so this is Peter's viewpoint.

  118. Now, remember, by Friday night, Peter is going to deny knowing

  119. Jesus. Jesus is going to be arrested.

  120. And when he is, he's betrayed by Judas.

  121. He's arrested. And there are three occasions

  122. where people say to Peter, weren't you one of the followers

  123. of Jesus? And the last is a little girl, a

  124. young woman. And Peter curses and betrays and

  125. says that he doesn't even know who Jesus is.

  126. OK, so this is Peter's viewpoint of Jesus going in to Jerusalem

  127. on that Sunday morning. And so it marked 11 chap verses

  128. one through 11. So Mark writes, Now when they

  129. drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethpage and Bethany at the

  130. Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to

  131. them, Go into the village in front of you and immediately as

  132. you enter, you will find a colt, Tide, on which no one has ever

  133. sat. Untie it and bring it.

  134. Now watch this. Jesus is going to ride this colt

  135. that has never been ridden, which means it's never been

  136. broken, right? So he, this is somewhat of a

  137. miracle that he's riding this, this donkey.

  138. And I've, I can, again, having been to Jerusalem, I can

  139. envision where the Mount of Olives is and across there's a

  140. big valley there and there's a highway that runs through it.

  141. And so I can envision what it would have been like for Jesus

  142. to have come from the Mount of Olives to gone into the valley

  143. and up the hill to Jerusalem, OK?

  144. And he would have been doing this his entire life.

  145. OK. You remember that Jesus had gone

  146. to celebrate the Passover feast when he was 12 with his parents,

  147. Mary and Joseph. And remember, they lost him.

  148. They left him there. And they got about halfway home

  149. and realized, oh, wow, Jesus isn't with us.

  150. And when he gets back, when they go back to the city of

  151. Jerusalem, they find him in the temple having conversations and

  152. leaving the religious leaders in awe of his insights regarding

  153. scripture and other things. So, so Jesus, his entire life

  154. would have been making that journey across from the Mount of

  155. Olives into the valley and up into the city of Jerusalem.

  156. But this time it's different because the expectation is high.

  157. They know he's coming. He's performed these miracles

  158. with Lazarus and the feeding of the 5000 and the healing of the

  159. blind men, just so many miracles.

  160. And so Jesus had grown greatly in favor and notoriety.

  161. And here it comes into the city during the Passover feast.

  162. OK. And he says you'll go find this

  163. cult. And what's interesting is that

  164. he just says, just go take it when you you're going to

  165. immediately see this cult. And when you do, just go take

  166. it. So in verse 33, it says, if

  167. anyone says to you, why are you doing this?

  168. Why are you taking? Why are you stealing my cold?

  169. Say the Lord has need of it and we'll send it back here

  170. immediately. And they went away and found a

  171. colt tied at the door outside in the street.

  172. And they untied it. And some of those standing there

  173. said to them, what are you doing?

  174. What are you doing on tying the colt?

  175. And they said, the Lord needs it.

  176. And the person who had the colt, he, he did that.

  177. He just let it take it, right. So how are you when someone

  178. says, Oh yeah, the Lord has need of this, the idea that that, you

  179. know, really it's kind of against our theology to say that

  180. God needs anything. God is he's totally sufficient.

  181. But in this occasion, Jesus expresses, hey, I have this

  182. need, the Lord, I have this need.

  183. And this person who has the cult allows it.

  184. And when they do, it's important because he's fulfilling A

  185. prophecy that we'll get to. So verse 6.

  186. And they told them what Jesus had said, that he had need of

  187. it, and they let them go. And they brought the cult to

  188. Jesus, and they threw their cloaks on it and he sat on it.

  189. This is like them treating him like a king.

  190. When they take their coats and they put it on the donkey, then

  191. it is again nodding to the fact that he is kingly.

  192. And then he spread their cloaks on the road again.

  193. It's something that you would do for royalty, something for

  194. kings. Another spread leafy branches,

  195. in other words, the palm branches that they had cut from

  196. the fields and verse 9 and those who went before and those who

  197. followed were shouting Hosanna. Blessed is he who comes in the

  198. name of the Lord bless. Blessed is the coming Kingdom of

  199. our Father David. Hosanna in the highest.

  200. Now hosanna is a Hebrew word and it literally means save us now,

  201. save us now. And it was taken from the

  202. Psalms. OK, so they're quoting when

  203. they're saying Hosanna, Blessed is he who comes in the name of

  204. the Lord. Well, they're quoting Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:24–26

  205. verses 24 through 26. For the psalmist writes, this is

  206. the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in

  207. it. Save us, we pray.

  208. That's where Hosanna would have been.

  209. Save us now we pray, O Lord, O Lord, we pray, give us success.

  210. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  211. We bless you from the House of the Lord.

  212. The the Jews had been anticipating their Messiah,

  213. their deliverer coming. Moses was a type of deliverer.

  214. David. They're looking to the lineage

  215. of David. David had been their deliverer

  216. also. And now they're looking for the

  217. Messiah to come. They've been expecting about it.

  218. OK, so but in their mind, when they're saying save us now, they

  219. were really Speaking of a political type of salvation.

  220. We say it now, we say Hosanna. Blessed is he who comes in the

  221. name of the Lord. But we're thinking about all the

  222. eternal salvation that we receive in Jesus through the

  223. cross and the burial and the resurrection.

  224. But in their minds, when they were singing Hosanna, it had

  225. become a political, like a war cry.

  226. And those of you who might have grown up Catholic, or if you

  227. have a Catholic tradition, if you'll notice there are more

  228. books of the Bible in the Catholic Bible, OK.

  229. And one of those is the books of Maccabees, OK?

  230. So interesting enough, around 150 years before Jesus, it was

  231. walking on the earth. There was a rebellion that was

  232. led by these Maccabee brothers. And when they came into the

  233. city, the Jews also historically, Josephus tells us

  234. this historically, they also would have quoted the same

  235. scripture. And they were able to rebel

  236. against the Syrians and the Greeks.

  237. Remember, Alexander the Great would have been around that era,

  238. right? So they lead, the Jews lead a

  239. rebellion. And the Greeks had actually

  240. conquered Jerusalem and they'd actually set up a statue of Zeus

  241. in the temple to justify the Jews.

  242. The Romans were more politically savvy.

  243. They weren't as they didn't come and conquer places and offend as

  244. bad as the Greeks did. So this is a this is a war cry.

  245. Yes, in the original Psalm, it's looking for the Messiah to be

  246. the one that is blessed in the name of the Lord.

  247. But they had taken that term and they turned it into a political

  248. war cry that they've used before.

  249. And they're missing Jesus's intent to bring eternal

  250. salvation through the cross, through his sacrifice that he

  251. will make. So their their understanding is

  252. limited, but Jesus, it's interesting how he responds to

  253. them. Does he, does he criticize them?

  254. No, he receives their worship even in the midst of their

  255. limited and kind of poor understanding of what Hosanna

  256. meant, right. And that's the heart of God.

  257. Maybe when you were a new Christian, brand new in the

  258. Lord, maybe there were some things that you believed about

  259. God that weren't completely accurate.

  260. Maybe your view of God was skewed.

  261. How does God delete us? Well, you'll see how he responds

  262. to the city of Jerusalem and their limited understanding of

  263. that passage. Hosanna save us now.

  264. They missed it. They thought it was a political

  265. war cry and Jesus had more meaning for it now.

  266. So it wasn't the first time that they had used this terminology

  267. before. Now Jesus, his timing because of

  268. prophecies, His timing was that this is the year that he's going

  269. to Passover. He's gone every year, but this

  270. is the year that now he knows his destiny and it is to be

  271. crucified. It is to offer himself up.

  272. So let's go back to John's account.

  273. So in John chapter 6 where we started, let's see how John

    John 6 chapter mention

  274. paints the picture of that Sunday and when they had eaten

  275. their fill. Oh no, I'm sorry.

  276. Oh, I'm going to take you here to another time.

  277. They wanted to make Jesus King. OK, so this is when early on

  278. when he's feeding the 5000, they are going to try to force him

  279. into being king like there. Watch how it happens verse 12.

  280. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples,

  281. gather up the leftover fragments, the broken pieces,

  282. that nothing may be lost. So they gathered them up and

  283. filled 12 baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left

  284. by those who had eaten. And when the people saw the sign

  285. that he had done, they said, This is indeed the prophet who

  286. is to come into the world. Perceiving that they were about

  287. to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew

  288. again to the mountain by himself.

  289. Maybe you missed that part of the story when you think about

  290. the feeding of the 5000, that they early on in his ministry

  291. wanted to force him into that kingly place.

  292. But Jesus, again, he was kind of flying under the radar.

  293. He had miracles to perform, He had teachings to give, and it

  294. was destined that this is the year, this is the exact moment

  295. that He is to be crucified. And so he was kind of like

  296. keeping a low profile when they were trying to force Him to be

  297. that king. And the type of king they were

  298. wanting was the type of king that would have defeated the

  299. Romans, kicked them out and set up again, like a Davidic type of

  300. government. The they wanted that type of

  301. king. But that wasn't Jesus's intent.

  302. OK, So, so on that occasion he defies and doesn't welcome,

  303. they're forcing him to be a king.

  304. Now, when Jesus is in Jerusalem. But we think over 2 million

  305. others would have converged on the city to celebrate the

  306. Passover. Well, what are they celebrating?

  307. What event are they celebrating? Well, this is the Passover feast

  308. that had started in Egypt. Remember the story that Moses

  309. was born in Farrell's court, and he grows up until he's 40 years

  310. old, and then he murders a Egyptian soldier, if you will,

  311. or at least a taskmaster over slaves.

  312. So the Jews had become slaves in Egypt when Joseph had become the

  313. governor some hundreds of years earlier.

  314. So Joseph becomes the governor. Remember Joseph, he had the coat

  315. of many colours sold in the slavery by his brothers and

  316. eventually Joseph's brothers. They come during a famine and

  317. they come with their father Jacob, and they they get stuck

  318. in Egypt and the Egyptians make them slaves for hundreds of

  319. years. So Moses said growing up in the

  320. Pharaoh's court that 40 he murdered, killed a slave

  321. taskmaster and he goes and hides in the desert for 40 more years.

  322. So now he's 80 years old. And that's when God comes to him

  323. in a burning Bush. God speaks to him.

  324. And what does God tell him? God says, I want you to go tell

  325. the Pharaoh to let my people go. Right.

  326. Remember the song Pharaoh, Pharaoh.

  327. Oh, let my people go. Right, right.

  328. So there it is. So that's, that's the, that's

  329. the historical background. So here it is.

  330. So Moses, now he goes to the Pharaoh and he says, God says,

  331. let my people go. And he does some miraculous

  332. things. And Pharaoh says no.

  333. And so there are 10 plagues. And each time the Pharaoh says

  334. that he's going to let the Jewish slaves go, but he changes

  335. his mind over and over again. And finally his heart is

  336. hardened. The Pharaoh's heart is hardened

  337. against the instructions that Moses, their deliverer, is

  338. giving. And so finally, because of the

  339. hardness of his heart, the measures become even more

  340. extreme. And eventually now the 10th

  341. plague is going to be a death Angel.

  342. The Angel of death is going to crossover Egypt.

  343. And when it does, the first born in every home like human being

  344. and the first born of the layer livestock was going to be

  345. killed. And this is because again,

  346. Pharaoh's heart had been heartened and he, he would not

  347. release the slaves as God had told him to do.

  348. Now, this is the, this is the Passover, right?

  349. So the death Angel is going to Passover.

  350. So watch what happens. This is Exodus 12, the original

  351. count of this. OK.

  352. And for 1400 years. So if the time for Moses to

  353. Jesus is around 1400 years. So for 1400 years, almost all

  354. the time they've been celebrating the Passover feast,

  355. remembering God's faithfulness and delivering them from slavery

  356. from the Egyptians. So watch your verse 3.

  357. This is God speaking to them. Tell all the congregation of

  358. Israel that on the 10th day of this month, every man shall take

  359. a lamb according to their father's house, a lamb for a

  360. household. And if the household is too

  361. small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take

  362. according to the number of persons, according to what each

  363. can eat. You shall make your count for

  364. the lamb. And of course, Jesus is now the

  365. Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

  366. That's how he's introduced by John the Baptist.

  367. He is the Lamb of God and Revelation, You'll see it also.

  368. He's referred to this over and over and over again.

  369. Jesus is the sacrificial lamb that was given for us.

  370. And this Lamb that is going to defend them from the Angel of

  371. death is a picture, a type of Jesus who is to come.

  372. Now verse 5, Your lamb shall be without blemish.

  373. This again is nodding at Jesus, a male, a year old.

  374. You may take it from the sheep up or from the goats, and you

  375. shall keep it until the 14th day of this month, when the whole

  376. assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at

  377. twilight. Then they shall take some of the

  378. blood and put it on the doorposts, the two doorposts at

  379. the lentil of the house, and which they eat it, they shall

  380. eat the flesh that that night roasted on the fire with

  381. unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

  382. They shall eat it. Now watch, would we still do

  383. unleavened bread to the state, don't we, when we receive

  384. communion, right? So on this occasion, the even

  385. the bread, all of this stuff is pointing towards Jesus.

  386. So Jesus is going to be the spotless lamb who's without

  387. blemish. And he's going to be offered up

  388. for us 1400 years after this. But for those 1400 years, they

  389. celebrated and had this feast, had this, this eating of the

  390. lamb, OK. And so the night that the death

  391. Angel comes through Egypt, sadly again, even the first born of

  392. the Pharaoh dies. And those who do not have the

  393. blood on the doorpost, again they're visited by the Angel of

  394. death. And so this is now a picture of

  395. the blood of Christ that has been poured out for us.

  396. And because of the blood of Christ, when we apply it to the

  397. doorposts of our lives, then we are delivered.

  398. And this is one of the in the mighty name of Jesus.

  399. When we sing that song, right, there's a line in that says I

  400. draw a permanent battle. Let's say a the enemy has the

  401. near my family and the doorpost. There's a line, there's

  402. somewhere about the doorpost. OK, So that's again a

  403. remembering of OK, that's right. In the Old Testament, they would

  404. put the blood over the doorpost. And this is what they're doing

  405. the week that Jesus goes in to the city of Jerusalem, OK?

  406. He's there to celebrate the Passover again, 1400 years, and

  407. he'd been doing it every year of his life.

  408. But this is the occasion where he has his triumphal entry into

  409. the city and he's being celebrated, right?

  410. So I just wanted to connect that for you.

  411. So that's what they're celebrating.

  412. Then. Jesus now is coming to fulfill

  413. all of these prophecies. He's coming to fulfill the

  414. imagery that had been presented in the Old Testament that was

  415. pointing at him. OK, now let's go to Matthew's

  416. account. So Matthew is the tax collector

  417. who becomes a disciple follower of Jesus and this is his

  418. explanation of the triumphal entry on that Palm Sunday verse

  419. one and chapter 21. Now when they drew near to

  420. Jerusalem and came to Bethpage to the Mount of Olives.

  421. Again the Mount of Olives is across the valley from

  422. Jerusalem. Then Jesus sent 2 disciples

  423. saying to them going to the village in front of you, and

  424. immediately you will find a donkey, tide and a colt with

  425. her. Untie them and bring them to me.

  426. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say the Lord needs

  427. them and he will send them at once.

  428. This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet saying

  429. say to the daughter of Zion, behold, your king is coming to

  430. you humble and mounted on a donkey on a colt, the foal of a

  431. beast of burden. Now in this occasion, Matthew is

  432. giving explanation to what they were saying and he it's he's

  433. mentioning that this is a prophet, a prophecy about Jesus

  434. from Zechariah Chapter 9 verse 9, Zechariah writing about Jesus

    Zechariah 9:9

  435. who was to come this prophesying about him.

  436. He said rejoice greatly. O daughter of Zion, shout aloud,

  437. O daughter of Jerusalem, behold, your king is coming to you

  438. righteous and having salvation. Is he humble and mounted on a

  439. donkey on a cold, the foal of a donkey.

  440. This is hundreds of years before Jesus has his triumphal entry on

  441. that Palm Sunday. It had been prophesied.

  442. And so Jesus is fulfilling this prophecy and the disciples and

  443. those who were following him understood this, that the

  444. Messiah had been prophesied about.

  445. Now scholars think that Jesus fulfilled over 300, maybe as

  446. many as 450 prophecies from the Old Testament.

  447. And all of those prophecies give me even more credence and

  448. credibility to Jesus being the Messiah.

  449. The example here again, him riding the donkey, why he's

  450. fulfilling this prophecy, the fulfillment of this prophecy,

  451. even the more gives you and I reason to believe He is the Lord

  452. and He is the Messiah. He was building the faith as He

  453. was fulfilling these prophecies. So Matthew continues and in

  454. verse 6 it says the disciples went and did as Jesus had

  455. directed them. They brought the donkey in the

  456. cold and put on them their cloaks and he sat on them.

  457. Now when Jesus is when they put the cloaks on the, the donkey,

  458. this is a sign that he is royal, that he is king like, and

  459. they're doing it to honor him as he comes into the city, right.

  460. So you've seen the pictures probably in a children's Bible

  461. or the like, where Jesus is on the donkey and the coats have

  462. been draped over the, the donkey.

  463. But not only are they putting coats on the donkey, they're

  464. also putting coats on the floor on the ground.

  465. Verse 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and

  466. others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the

  467. road. Again, this is the palms.

  468. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were

  469. shouting Hosanna to the Son of David.

  470. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  471. Hosanna. Again Matthew citing that they

  472. are quoting the Psalm. And when he entered Jerusalem,

  473. the whole city was stirred up, saying, Who is this?

  474. And the crowd said, this is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of

  475. Galilee. OK, so that's Matthew's story.

  476. Now let's go back to where we started with John's account, and

  477. let's see the things that he's going to point out.

  478. Verse 12 of chapter 12 again. And the next day, the large

  479. crowd that had come to the feast, the Passover feast, heard

  480. that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

  481. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him,

  482. crying out Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the

  483. Lord, even the king of Israel. And Jesus found a young donkey,

  484. and he sat on it, just as it is written.

  485. Fear not, daughter of Zion, behold, your king is coming,

  486. sitting on a donkey's colt. Again, mentioning this passage

  487. from Zechariah. Now what?

  488. One of the things that John points out that is different

  489. than the other accounts is that John is going to point out that

  490. after Jesus enters the city, he has a response to the

  491. celebration, to his triumphal entry.

  492. And John's the one who mentions it.

  493. And what does Jesus do? He weeps over the city of

  494. Jerusalem. And why does he weep?

  495. Because he knows their future. He knows what's going to happen.

  496. They're lost and they're in the moment.

  497. They're hyped up, blessed to see who comes in the name of the

  498. Lord Hosanna. But he knows within days they

  499. will betray him. They'll turn on the same ones

  500. that were singing Hosanna on that Sunday.

  501. By Friday would be saying, crucify him, right?

  502. They turned on him. Why?

  503. Because he didn't. He didn't respond the way that

  504. they wanted. He, he wasn't the Messiah that

  505. they were looking or hoping for. Now Jesus knows what's going to

  506. happen. And he also knows that then in

  507. 8070, the Romans are going to come in and they're going to

  508. conquer Jerusalem. They're going to destroy it.

  509. And to this day you can go see the ruins that would have been

  510. from that occasion. The Jews had rebelled enough

  511. times for finding the Romans were like, we're just going to

  512. end you. So they go in and again, they

  513. just totally destroyed the city of Jerusalem.

  514. OK, Now Jesus knows that's coming.

  515. So because of that he weeps and how wonderful to know that the

  516. God we serve, the Lord that we follow, he is one who has an

  517. emotion like this where he weeps.

  518. So Luke 19, I'm sorry Luke tells this account.

  519. I'm sorry, I was saying, John Luke tells this account.

  520. And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,

  521. saying, would that you, even you had known on this day the things

  522. that make for peace, but now they are hidden from your eyes.

  523. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will set up a

  524. barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on

  525. every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your

  526. children within you. And they will not leave one

  527. stone upon another in you, meaning the city of Jerusalem,

  528. because you did not know the time of your visitation.

  529. So Jesus saying you don't, they're going to lose sight of

  530. who he is. And because of that, there is

  531. going to become, there's destruction to come.

  532. Now on this occasion when Luke, when Luke is saying that Jesus

  533. wept, there's he's using a word that's different than the

  534. occasion where Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus.

  535. Remember in that account, Jesus's friends Mary and Martha

  536. and Lazarus, Lazarus has been dead and in the in the tomb for

  537. a couple of days by the time that Jesus makes the journey

  538. there. And Jesus resurrects him, right?

  539. And on that occasion, Jesus sees how sad Mary and Martha are.

  540. And in their sadness, Jesus weeps with them.

  541. And you can read that in John 11.

  542. It says John 1134. And he said, where have you laid

  543. him? Meaning Lazarus?

  544. And he's speaking to one of the sisters.

  545. And they said to him, Lord, come and see in verse 35, Jesus wept.

  546. So the Jews said, see how he loved him.

  547. And it's true he loved Lazarus. But in that occasion he's

  548. weeping because of the he sees the sadness and the sisters.

  549. Now on that occasion, it's the word is, is Dacrio.

  550. It's a it's a Greek word for the way that John explains the way

  551. Jesus is crying that time with Lazarus.

  552. It's kind of like a quiet cry. But when Jesus goes into the

  553. city on that Palm Sunday, his triumphal entry, when he cries

  554. that time, it's a, it's a reward.

  555. I can't quite say, but it's KLAIO, it's a Greek word.

  556. And that this type of crying, this is like uncertain affinity

  557. to sob, to wail out loud. So Jesus knowing that

  558. destruction is coming, he knows they're going to miss his truth.

  559. And so because of this, he weeps out loud, He sobs in sorrow over

  560. what is to come because of their lack of obedience and because of

  561. their hardened hearts. OK, so that's just some dots to

  562. connect there. So Jesus weeps and I think that

  563. this day, just knowing that, I still think that Jesus looks at

  564. the plight of the world and it wouldn't surprise me if he still

  565. weeps. When you see wars and rumors of

  566. wars and the type of evil things that men and women do to each

  567. other, I think Jesus sees that and I think he still weeps.

  568. And knowing that he's like that, I think it's important in our

  569. relationship and the way that we respond and interact with Jesus.

  570. Now, I want to tie this up by showing you what is the future

  571. Now, what is the future of palms?

  572. You know, I encourage you again today, take a palm home, take a

  573. couple, some of you like to braid them.

  574. And just throughout the week, just remember, OK, what happened

  575. this morning, OK, on this Palm Sunday, that Jesus made his

  576. triumphal entry. Now watch this though, and this

  577. is so profoundly wonderful to me, is that we will in the

  578. future worship Jesus again with palms.

  579. We'll do it in heaven. And John, when he's writing

  580. Revelation, remember, John is the youngest of the disciples.

  581. He writes his Gospel of John, but also he writes Revelation,

  582. we believe. And he was exiled there, like in

  583. prison on the Isle of Patmos. And while he's there, he has a

  584. vision, OK? And his vision becomes the Book

  585. of Revelation. It's all this heavenly imagery.

  586. And so watch what John says will happen with palms in the future.

  587. Now watch the verse 9 after this.

  588. I looked and behold a great multitude that no one could

  589. number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and

  590. languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.

  591. And they were clothed in white robes, with palm branches in

  592. their hands and crying out with a loud voice.

  593. Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the

  594. Lamb in heaven. What this vision that John has

  595. seen, this is all the followers of Jesus that have been redeemed

  596. by his sacrifice, because he is the Lamb of God who takes away

  597. the sins of the world. On this occasion, we will again

  598. bring him honor and glory and we'll wave the palm branches

  599. again declaring who He is. And this excites me to think,

  600. OK, it's going to happen again in the future.

  601. But this time around where the the triumphal entry, they had

  602. limited understanding of what Jesus, what his mission was.

  603. They had limited understanding. But on this occasion now we'll

  604. have full understanding of how much Jesus did for us and we

  605. will declare him again as the Lamb of God.

  606. And we'll do it with palms now. And John says in this occasion,

  607. it's all tribes and all peoples. So the poems remind us of what

  608. Jesus did, and they remind us of the worship that is to come in

  609. heaven where we will spend eternity with him.

  610. Now, let me just tie this up and put a bow on of the sorts.

  611. You know, Palm Sunday is an important part of getting ready

  612. for Easter because understanding this week, knowing what happens

  613. in the life of Jesus. So this is Sunday by, you know,

  614. the next Sunday he will be resurrected.

  615. Friday he'll be put in the tomb. He'll be on Thursday night,

  616. he'll be arrested and he'll have communion for the first time

  617. with his disciples. And so all that is happening,

  618. it's he teaches. There's still many chapters left

  619. in John after this is John 11. So if this is the triumphal

  620. entry, then you have many more chapters to come after that

  621. explaining that last week of the life of Jesus before he is

  622. resurrected. OK, so getting you ready as a

  623. church, getting our church family ready to gather on Friday

  624. night starts today. Mindful of this is the way Jesus

  625. enters the city. They celebrate him, Hosanna, but

  626. they're going to turn on him. They're going to cry out, give

  627. us Barabbas. The same voices again, the cry,

  628. Hosanna cry, give us Barabbas crucify him.

  629. So this week what I would encourage you to do is be

  630. mindful of what's happening in the life of Jesus that week that

  631. he is in Jerusalem after his triumphal entry.

  632. And then I must say that Good Friday is really one of my most

  633. favorite services every year. If you've never been to one of

  634. our Good Friday services, I really encourage you to come and

  635. come with your family, come with your kids.

  636. It's designed as a time to be with your kids and families.

  637. And that's important to know because years ago I worked at a

  638. church and a friend who was on staff at this was planning a

  639. Good Friday service and he was going to show clips from the

  640. passion of the Christ, which is a tremendous movie.

  641. But I don't want a child seeing clips of that, right?

  642. It's to to just not ready for them to see.

  643. So it's kid friendly service. And we will have Taylor will

  644. have some things for the kids to, to color and other things if

  645. they get distracted. But here's what I've learned is

  646. that I didn't grow up in a tradition where we went to Good

  647. Friday services. In fact, I worked in the church,

  648. my first church job at leading worship.

  649. I was 19. I was a youth director and

  650. worship leader. We never had Good Friday

  651. services. We knew how to celebrate.

  652. We thought really well on Sunday mornings.

  653. We would do the celebration big on Sunday mornings.

  654. But it wasn't until I was 31 years old.

  655. So I worked at 3 churches and finally went to work at a church

  656. called Willow Creek in the Chicago area as a worship

  657. leader. And that was the first time that

  658. I did a Good Friday service and I was astounded at how much more

  659. meaningful Sunday was after visiting the Cross in a

  660. reflective way on Friday. OK, so all those years I was

  661. missing out. I didn't know the celebration on

  662. Sunday morning is more profoundly wonderful when you

  663. have gone to the Cross on Friday evening.

  664. So I encourage you to come out to that and I encourage you as

  665. you don't know what to expect in that service.

  666. It will be reflective. It'll be quiet.

  667. We'll read a lot of scripture together and we'll have

  668. communion together, and then we'll leave in silence.

  669. So every year when we have these services, I'll say, OK, but you

  670. know, please don't speak in Word until you leave the door.

  671. So people get to sit and kind of just stay in that place as long

  672. as they want. And sometimes people will pray

  673. at length and they'll just sit in reflection of the sacrifice

  674. that Jesus made for us. OK, now that makes Sunday

  675. morning better because when you come on Sunday morning, it's not

  676. reflective. We're going to celebrate.

  677. We're going to raise the we're doing a song this year and it

  678. has, there's a lyric and it raised the roof off of this

  679. house, you know, so that's the goal.

  680. We're going to celebrate in a great way.

  681. But I'm telling you, the celebrations were meaningful

  682. when Friday we've reflected together.

  683. OK, so if you never come, I really want to encourage you to

  684. come. So now when we connect these

  685. dots between Palm Sunday, the triumphal entry, the week that

  686. Jesus is going to have teaching, he goes in and he remember he

  687. throws the money changers out of the of the temple area.

  688. They were fleecing people, selling lambs, but doing it in a

  689. way where was crooked and corrupt.

  690. So, Gee, all this stuff is going to happen this week.

  691. And then Friday is his crucifixion, and we will visit

  692. that together as a church on Friday.

  693. So I would encourage you to take a poem with you on your way home

  694. and give them to your kids. Be mindful again as we approach

  695. Easter. I think today's message

  696. hopefully is going to build up to the message of the

  697. resurrection next Sunday morning.

  698. All right, let me pray for us. God, we thank you for this day

  699. that you've made. And Jesus, we do call out to you

  700. as our deliverer, our Savior. We say Hosanna, blessed as he

  701. who comes in the name of the Lord.

  702. We believe that you are king, and we cry out to you the same,

  703. but with different understanding, increased

  704. understanding of what they were expecting and looking for from

  705. you. So we don't see you as a

  706. political leader, just a war leader.

  707. Instead, we look to you as our deliverer.

  708. Spiritually, You have eternally delivered us into salvation

  709. because of what you're going to do this week.

  710. So as a church family, God, I pray that you would ready us for

  711. a really meaningful time on Friday night when we visit the

  712. cross and then on Sunday when we come next week to shout and give

  713. glory to you for conquering death, hell in the grave.

  714. We pray that it will be honoring to you and we pray that you'll

  715. that you'll appeal to people to come, maybe who are have not

  716. been to our church before or maybe some who've not been in

  717. church for a long time. And we pray that the way that we

  718. celebrate you and the way we reflect on the cross on Friday

  719. will lead more and more people to coming back to faith in you

  720. or renew faith in you for the first time.

  721. We pray this in Jesus name and everyone said Amen.

  722. Now before we go, I do want to just take a moment and offer to

  723. you a moment to receive Jesus as your Savior.

  724. If you never have. There's a family I was just

  725. talking to before service and she said that her and her

  726. husband 41 years ago on Palm Sunday made their decision to

  727. become a Christian, which is really cool and memorable,

  728. right? So this would be a great Sunday

  729. to say yes to Jesus. So what does it take to become a

  730. Christian? The Bible says if you believe in

  731. your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, then

  732. you shall be saved. Hazel and Jamie, you guys want

  733. to we want to sit down for just a little bit longer.

  734. There you go. Good job guys.

  735. Thank you. So if you if you believe in your

  736. heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, then

  737. you shall be saved. And what when you're saying

  738. Jesus says Lord, now you're surrendering your life to him.

  739. And we believe that when we surrender our lives to Jesus and

  740. he comes and dwells in us, the Holy Spirit, then we believe

  741. that we receive eternal life. Now we'll have it after we die,

  742. but we get purpose and meaning and relationship with God now

  743. and we call it Zoe life. OK, so you can receive that now

  744. and Palm Sunny would be a great day to do it.

  745. So then we encourage you to tell somebody that you made the

  746. decision to become a Christian. And then we encourage you to be

  747. baptized, OK? And we do baptisms here a couple

  748. times a year. And in this September, we'll do

  749. them in the lake and Dixon Lake. We'll do some before then.

  750. So when you're baptized, that's you putting on display others

  751. for others to see of what has happened in you.

  752. You've been cleansed by the blood of Christ and you've been

  753. resurrected in him. And baptism represents that.

  754. So I'm going to pray. And if you want to make that

  755. decision that I encourage you to echo the prayer that I'm praying

  756. and then let somebody know that you made this decision to follow

  757. Christ. Let me pray and you can echo,

  758. you can say, Heavenly Father, I come to you in Jesus name and I

  759. want to surrender my life to you Jesus.

  760. Come and be the Lord of my life. Forgive me of my sin.

  761. I turn away from my sinful ways and I say grow me in your ways

  762. as I repent and turn towards you.

  763. So Jesus come and reign and rule in my heart.

  764. I do declare that you are my deliverer, my Savior, and I

  765. receive you as Lord and I pray that you'll help me to grow in

  766. your ways. Teach me your ways as I chase

  767. after you. And thank you for eternal life

  768. that I'm receiving starting now. Thank you for it.

  769. And Jesus name and everyone together said, Amen.

  770. All right, let's stand together. Before you go, I want to send

  771. you out with a blessing. So if you'll prepare your heart

  772. to receive this blessing, don't forget to grab a poem on your

  773. way out and also grab notes. All right?

  774. And now may the Lord bless you and keep you, and may he make

  775. his face to shine upon you. And may the joy of the Lord,

  776. that is unspeakable and full of glory, may it abound to you.

  777. And may the peace of God that passes all understanding, may it

  778. surprise you in the midst of all of the challenges that life

  779. brings. And then may the mercies of the

  780. Lord, in other words, the forgiveness of God, that's new

  781. every morning. May it be especially new to you

  782. now and your mornings to come. And now, may the Lord Jesus

  783. Christ guard your heart and your mind, your salt and your light.

  784. Go now and be salt and light under the world.

  785. You are blessed. We'll see you again soon.
