  1. All right, welcome back, parents.

  2. Well, we're in a season of our lives, Jason and I with

  3. grandchildren now that when our kids and our grandkids are

  4. together, like for a holiday or something.

  5. And the, the sound of, of them visiting, right, is, is a

  6. beautiful sound. And so I have this sense

  7. sometimes, especially during a break, sometimes I'll just stand

  8. here and to hear you guys visiting and enjoying being

  9. together. I think the heart of God being a

  10. father kind of just enjoys his kids being together in the, in

  11. the house, right, And all the hustle and the bustle of it.

  12. So I just, I always want you to be mindful that, that sometimes

  13. we'll talk about the music part of the services, like, Oh,

  14. that's the worship part. But my encouragement too is that

  15. no, I mean you getting in your car on your way here, that's

  16. worship. And then you walk in and you

  17. interact with others, you see others, you connect, you don't

  18. sneak in. Our our church is hard to sneak

  19. in and just find a seat, right? That's you Like some churches,

  20. you can kind of sneak in and not talk to anybody.

  21. OK, I hope that that doesn't happen here.

  22. I don't think it does, right. So my sense is that, OK, then we

  23. sing and that's worship. And then even the announcements,

  24. believe it or not, it's like this is the business of church,

  25. right? Other times to connect every

  26. part of what we're doing. This is kind of our liturgy.

  27. Maybe some of you grew up in a church that was liturgical,

  28. right? And it had certain kind of

  29. ancient traditions. Well, we don't have so many

  30. ancient traditions necessarily, but but our liturgy is coffee

  31. and doughnuts and visiting and singing and a break.

  32. The 5 minute break is part of our liturgy.

  33. And I must say that I even teaching it, that 5 minute break

  34. kind of gives you a minute just kind of rest your head.

  35. And then we get to dig in deep to the word of God, right?

  36. And certainly our attention and an honoring and admiration in

  37. awe of God's word. That's part of our worship.

  38. It's all part of our liturgy. So God's enjoying his children

  39. being together in the house when we're together.

  40. Now, if you have your Bibles on this Easter Sunday morning,

  41. please take them and turn to the New Testament, to the book of

  42. Luke, about the 80% through your Bible.

  43. If you're new to the Bible, the New Testament, find that.

  44. And then you have Matthew. Mark, Luke and John are the four

  45. accounts of the story of the life of Jesus.

  46. And then it goes on to Acts, which is the history of the

  47. early church, and then letters that early church leaders sent

  48. to church as an individual. So we're going to be in Luke

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  49. chapter 24. Again, notes are on the back

  50. table each week if you're new to our church, I, I print out

  51. pretty detailed notes that you could take home with you and

  52. hopefully remember what we studied on Sunday morning.

  53. So those are available to you. Either pick them up now or on

  54. your way out. I'm reading to you from Luke

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  55. chapter 24. This is Luke's account of the

  56. resurrection Sunday morning, and this is what he says.

  57. But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went

  58. to the tomb taking spices that they had prepared, and they

  59. found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

  60. They found Jesus resurrected on that Sunday morning.

  61. And we celebrate it today. Now this morning, I want to talk

  62. to you about the resurrections, not the resurrection, but the

  63. resurrections. And I'll explain that to you in

  64. a minute. Let me pray for us, God.

  65. I personally feel like like Christmas and Easter are just

  66. the most important, important messages of a calendar year.

  67. So this morning I stand before you and before this church

  68. saying, please God, speak to us about how enormous the

  69. resurrections are in our lives and in history.

  70. So our hearts are open as an act of worship and we're eager to to

  71. grow and our understanding of your truth and your word.

  72. So we lean in, our hearts are open, our minds are ready.

  73. Jesus, Holy Spirit, speak to us through your word.

  74. We pray in Jesus name and everyone loudly together said,

  75. Amen. So we're talking this morning

  76. about the resurrections, and when I say resurrections, what

  77. I'm saying is that it's plural. Of course, we're here today to

  78. celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, but we're also here today

  79. to celebrate the resurrections that we will experience because

  80. of his resurrection. His resurrection leads to

  81. eternal resurrections in US and we we experience resurrection

  82. here on earth in our lifetime. Now that's the point of baptism.

  83. When we come to faith in Jesus, we are, we become alive

  84. spiritually. Jesus called it born again like

  85. we, we, we, we are resurrected. And This is why baptism is what

  86. it is. When you're baptized and

  87. Christians are encouraged, if you come to faith in Jesus, it's

  88. a command be baptized. Why?

  89. Because we're putting on display out outward what has happened

  90. inside of us. And so the idea of baptism is

  91. that when you go under the water, you're cleansed for one.

  92. But then when you come out of the water, you're resurrected in

  93. Christ, right? So we celebrate that

  94. resurrection at the point of our salvation, but then we will also

  95. celebrate the resurrection eternally.

  96. And I want to unpack that for you this morning.

  97. I want to connect the resurrection Jesus on that first

  98. Sunday to the resurrections that happen in our lives and will

  99. happen in our lives to come. So what about the resurrection?

  100. Well, according to Paul, the resurrection and the well, the

  101. death, the burial and resurrection of Jesus are of

  102. first importance. This is why the confessions are

  103. so important. And and This is why we try, I

  104. try to find songs that feel like an apostles creed of sorts,

  105. because the things that are most important to us as Christians we

  106. should be mindful of. And I must tell you, sadly, that

  107. a lot of churches tend to find like little niche corners of

  108. theology, a little thing and it sets them apart differently.

  109. So maybe it's the the way they dress or they would take

  110. something that yes is important, but ultimately what is of first

  111. importance. So a lot of churches are built

  112. around like 1 little thing in their theological spectrum and

  113. they go, this is where they make it more important than it is.

  114. OK, hear me out on this. Paul says that some truths are

  115. of first importances. So the things that a lot of

  116. churches disagree about and divide them, well, I don't think

  117. it's honoring to God. But I must tell you, theology

  118. and doctrine and orthodoxy is so important to me.

  119. But I do it in the context of saying, OK, what is the first

  120. importance? And if you find a church in

  121. there, again, it's sometimes you'll go to a church.

  122. You're like, I didn't even know that that argument existed.

  123. I don't even know the Christians disagreed about that.

  124. But this church then will kind of focus on this place of

  125. disagreement. So at our church, we say we're

  126. interdenominational. And what does that mean?

  127. You could come to our church and think you're still a Catholic if

  128. you want to, or Methodist or Pentecostal or Charismatic or

  129. Baptist. See, we rally around the things

  130. that are of first importance. And this is not watering down

  131. the truth of God's Word. It's leaning in to the example

  132. that Paul gives when he says these things are a first

  133. importance. So where does he say this?

  134. In First Corinthians 15, Paul's writing to the Church of Corinth

  135. and he says to them, now I would remind you, brothers of the

  136. gospel, what is the gospel? The gospel is the good news of

  137. the love of Jesus displayed at the cross and the burial and the

  138. resurrection. The good news is that we can

  139. receive acceptance and forgiveness and relationship

  140. with God. That is the gospel.

  141. It's good news, he says. I remind you of the gospel I

  142. preached to you, which you received, in which you stand,

  143. and by which you are being saved.

  144. If you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you

  145. believed in vain. So he's saying, hold fast.

  146. If you hold fast, then he said otherwise you believe in vain,

  147. right? So hold fast to these truths.

  148. So what are the things he preached to them, and what does

  149. he want them to hold fast to? What he's going to tell us for I

  150. delivered to you as of first importance what I also received,

  151. that Christ died for our sins in accordance with Scripture.

  152. What is the first importance? Jesus died.

  153. He didn't faint, He didn't swoon, He didn't go into a coma.

  154. He died, and this is the point of the ancient creeds that say

  155. that Jesus descended into hell. Did Jesus go to a place with

  156. fire and brimstone? Some people think that no,

  157. that's not what happened. The ancient creeds were saying

  158. he descended into hell, meaning Hades or death.

  159. It's a way of saying he died, OK?

  160. Not that he literally went to his body to the place of

  161. torment, OK? It's just saying he died and

  162. this is of utmost first importance in our faith, OK?

  163. What else? He died for our sins in

  164. accordance with the Scriptures. That he was buried, It had been

  165. prophesied, Jesus talked about it, that he would be, he would

  166. rebuild his temple in three days and that he was raised on the

  167. third day in accordance with Scripture.

  168. So Christ died, was buried and raised.

  169. This is a first importance. This is how important the

  170. resurrection is. And then what else?

  171. And that he appeared to Cephas, meaning Peter.

  172. Peter who was one of his disciples.

  173. Peter, you remember, was a fisherman and you, if you know

  174. the story, you'll remember that Jesus raises his disciples up

  175. and Peter is somewhat the one who often take risks and he

  176. walks on water, sinks it a little while later, but he he

  177. gets out of the boat. And so Peter though denies Jesus

  178. eaten, knowing Jesus on the night that Jesus was betrayed

  179. and arrested on that Thursday night.

  180. So Peter was the denier. He was also the rock, though

  181. Jesus said. Peter had a revelation When

  182. Jesus said who do people say that I am?

  183. They said, well some a prophet, some a teacher.

  184. And Jesus said, but who do you say that I am?

  185. And Peter said the Christ Son of God, and Jesus said upon this

  186. rock meaning upon this truth, I'll build my church.

  187. Some people in certain Christian traditions think that when Jesus

  188. said that to Peter, that he was meeting Peter on you, I'll build

  189. my church. He didn't mean that.

  190. He meant on this revelation that you have, that I am the Christ,

  191. the Messiah. I'll build my church.

  192. And then Peter was also a rival to Paul sometimes.

  193. So what's beautiful and 1st importance, Paul's saying, hey,

  194. this rival that I have, I want you to know that Jesus appeared

  195. to him and Jesus was going to build his church again upon this

  196. revelation that Peter had. This is the first importance

  197. that Jesus is the Messiah that had been prophesied about.

  198. What else is the first importance?

  199. That he appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time, most

  200. of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.

  201. Now, why is this the first importance?

  202. This is the stuff that Paul preach, right?

  203. He says, focus on these things. When Paul is saying Jesus

  204. appeared to 500 people, he's saying there's historical

  205. evidence for the resurrection. It's not a myth.

  206. It's not a fairy tale. People saw Jesus.

  207. He appeared again to over 500 people.

  208. And when he says that some had fallen asleep, in this context,

  209. he's saying some have died and many, many of the early

  210. followers of Jesus were martyred because of their belief in the

  211. resurrection and the lordship of Jesus, right?

  212. So these are the first importance.

  213. Verse 7. Then he appeared to James, then

  214. to all the apostles, last of all to 1 untimely born.

  215. He appeared also to me. So watch this.

  216. This is the first importance. Paul is saying he appeared to

  217. James, who was the brother of Jesus and the pastor in

  218. Jerusalem. And then he says he's being

  219. comical in the way here. He says last of all, as to 1

  220. untimely born, He appeared also to me.

  221. He was like, I'm untimely born. You know, early on Paul was

  222. trying to martyr Christians to kill them.

  223. And he says, and Jesus appeared to me.

  224. I've seen him personally. These things are of first

  225. importance according to Paul and what he preached, not a whole

  226. bunch of little fringe doctrines on the side.

  227. OK, so he's given. So when you read the writings of

  228. Paul, know that, OK, these are the things that he thinks were

  229. most important. Now, the resurrection,

  230. resurrected Jesus again, had been seen by many, and many

  231. would lose their lives, as we said, in this belief in the

  232. resurrection. And this shows how committed

  233. they were to their belief in it. They gave their lives believing

  234. and proclaiming the resurrection.

  235. This morning we get to come to church and we have freedom and

  236. we're not being, you know, tortured or arrested or

  237. crucified because of our belief in the resurrection.

  238. The early church, their commitment to it, was so great

  239. that many of them laid down their lives.

  240. Now you need to know that the resurrection of Jesus is

  241. incomparable. What?

  242. What do I mean by that? There's no other resurrected

  243. person who, who or Jesus was man 100% man, 100% God.

  244. He is the only resurrected 1 And you might say, well, what about

  245. Lazarus? And what about Gyrus's daughter?

  246. Remember Jesus resuscitated Lazarus and Gyrus's daughter,

  247. right? She was ill.

  248. Sometimes we think of, oh, Lazarus was resurrected.

  249. No, Lazarus was dead for a few days in the tomb.

  250. But the Bible says he started to stink, right?

  251. And so Jesus resuscitates him, but Lazarus is going to die

  252. someday in the future. And Jairus's daughter, she's

  253. I'll Jesus resuscitates her. She lives who knows how long,

  254. but she eventually also is going to face death.

  255. But watch this. Jesus is resurrected.

  256. And what that means is that when he gave his life for us on on

  257. Calvary, he was buried. When he resurrected himself,

  258. He's never going to face death again.

  259. And this is what will happen with us who follow Jesus, who've

  260. given our lives to him. We will be resurrected, not just

  261. resuscitated. We will be resurrected in a

  262. physical body. We're not going to float around

  263. in heaven, just spirit. No, our bodies like Jesus will

  264. be resurrected fully and we will never again face death.

  265. And that makes the resurrection of Jesus unique and different.

  266. Yeah. In the notes, if you have them

  267. this week, I put some squiggly lines in between sections.

  268. I'm calling these turn signals. Sometimes it's like, OK, I'm

  269. taking a turn here. So I want you to know, OK, we

  270. just finished one idea. Now I'm going on to the next

  271. one. OK.

  272. So I want to show you John's accounts of that resurrection

  273. center. Let's let's visit how John, the

  274. apostle John explains what happened that morning.

  275. All right, John 20, starting in verse one now on the first day

  276. of the week, and Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early.

  277. And Mary Magdalene, you'll remember, was a woman of ill

  278. repute. She was a woman who would not

  279. have been very respected and was coming out of some really

  280. troubled behaviors, ungodly. And Jesus goes out of his way to

  281. bring her to an awareness of his love for her.

  282. And it's so magnificent that on this Sunday morning, who is it

  283. that is going to the tomb is going to discover that the stone

  284. has been rolled away in John's the, you know, this love

  285. disciple of Jesus, But he's saying it was Mary Magdalene.

  286. It's so beautiful to think that Jesus was going to use her in a,

  287. in a profoundly historic way as the first to see the tomb empty

  288. on the first day of the week. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb

  289. early while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been

  290. taken away from the tomb. And she was going because she

  291. was going to put spices and prepare Jesus's body for

  292. continued burial, right? So it's to keep his body from

  293. decaying and smelling, if you will, right?

  294. So she found the stone roll away when she got there.

  295. Now, you must know that when the stone is rolled away, it's not

  296. so that Jesus can get out, because Jesus can walk through

  297. walls. Jesus can transcend time and

  298. space, so the tomb is open so that we can get in.

  299. It's God's way of saying, hey, here's evidence.

  300. I'm going to help you believe because believing sometimes it's

  301. difficult, but God rolls stones away and says, come on in and

  302. see that it's real and see what has happened.

  303. OK, so, so she ran and she went to Simon Peter, the other

  304. disciple, the one whom Jesus loves.

  305. So I hear John is saying she ran to Peter, the one who denied

  306. Jesus. And John doesn't call himself

  307. John in his gospel. He calls himself sometimes the

  308. other disciple or the one that Jesus loved and said to them,

  309. they've taken the Lord of the two men.

  310. We do not know where they have laid him.

  311. So John, it's so funny. He nicknamed himself, right?

  312. He calls himself the disciple of Jesus loved.

  313. Wouldn't you love to nickname yourself if you could come up

  314. with any nickname? Poor doubting Thomas, right?

  315. He, he was given a nickname, right?

  316. I don't think he would have picked that one, right?

  317. So but John, he gives himself his own nickname and he calls

  318. himself that five times. And you could see those in your

  319. notes. So the beautiful thing in John

  320. calling himself this is to oh, to be that confident in the love

  321. of God for you. What if you introduced yourself

  322. to people, said hi, I'm Kurt and I'm loved by God.

  323. I'm loved so greatly by Jesus. This is how John is introducing

  324. himself. It's not arrogance or it's

  325. really just confidence in the love that Jesus had for him.

  326. Continuing verse 3. So Peter went out with the other

  327. disciples, beating John, and they were going toward the tomb.

  328. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple

  329. outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

  330. John mentions that he ran faster than Peter, which is a great

  331. part of the story, right? Because he's real.

  332. And but then when they get to the tomb, watch what happens and

  333. stooping to look in, John saw the linen cloth lying there, but

  334. he did not go in. He doesn't enter the tomb,

  335. right? It's curious.

  336. But then Simon Peter, who ran slower, he got there following

  337. him, and he went into the tomb and he saw the linen cloth lying

  338. there. This is the heart of God for us,

  339. right? Because I think Jesus ordained

  340. the steps of that morning. Peter was heartbroken.

  341. He had betrayed Jesus. He had sinned horribly.

  342. He was defeated. And Jesus welcomes.

  343. He's the first one in. And it just shows again the

  344. magnificent scandalous love of God for those who have failed

  345. and those who've wrecked things. So Peter, now this is going to

  346. start the process of him continuing to believe and watch

  347. it says. And the face cloth which had

  348. been on Jesus head, not lying with the linen cloth, but folded

  349. up in a place by itself. So why is it important that John

  350. is pointing out that that the face cloth of Jesus was folded

  351. in the tomb? Well, for one, it shows that it

  352. wasn't a robbery. The body wasn't robbed and it

  353. wasn't like an explosion. Maybe you think of the

  354. resurrection like couple like dynamite going off or something,

  355. right And just, you know, chaos everywhere.

  356. No, watch this. Jesus just woke up.

  357. He just woke up. He just resurrected himself.

  358. And it's funny if my mom, I'm sure mom's watching this

  359. morning. My mom.

  360. One of the things, and I appreciate this so greatly, is

  361. that when we were growing up, there was a big thing to to make

  362. your bed. Right, make your bed first thing

  363. in the morning. It's a great way to start your

  364. day. And a couple years ago I saw a

  365. naval commander who wrote a book and I think it was in the title,

  366. the idea, right? It's like start your day,

  367. whatever it was, It's like, so make your bed.

  368. It's just I'm to this day really obsessed with, I like to make

  369. the bed as soon as we can. Sometimes I'm ready to make it

  370. before Jason wants to make it. So, but I got to, you know, it's

  371. ingrained in me, right? So what maybe Mary taught Jesus

  372. this, right, Because here Jesus, what does he do?

  373. He gets up and he folds the linen cloth in a neat way that's

  374. recognizable. He just wakes up.

  375. OK. Verse 8 Then the other disciple

  376. would reach the tomb first also went in, and he saw and he

  377. believed Peter. Peter entering the tomb gave

  378. John faith to do the same. And verse 9 For as yet they did

  379. not understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.

  380. Jesus had told them what was going to happen, but they didn't

  381. understand it, right? I mean, it was so obvious, but

  382. they missed it. And I, I, I call to say as of

  383. yet moment in, in our lives, there are things that you might

  384. look back and go, oh man, when I was 20, as of yet, I didn't

  385. understand. And then your understanding of

  386. the gospel and God's love and truth, you grow in them, right?

  387. And there might be some things in your life right now where

  388. your thinking is off. And if you'd be open to say,

  389. God, direct me and show me where in my life do do I need to

  390. adjust? Where am I?

  391. Where have I started to believe something untrue about me or

  392. about you, God? And so John is looking back and

  393. he would have been an old man at this time looking back, writing

  394. the story. And he's looking back.

  395. And so just great. He's saying as of yet at that

  396. time, I still didn't get it. He gets it later.

  397. But early on, even after those three years with Jesus, his

  398. understanding was still limited. Now I'm taking a turn here.

  399. I want you to know that his resurrection again will lead to

  400. our resurrections. And this is the point of the

  401. death and the burial and the resurrection of Jesus.

  402. The point was the resurrections of those who choose to follow

  403. Christ, the resurrection of Jesus, and our upcoming new

  404. resurrections enable Jesus watch this to endure the cross.

  405. Maybe you want to just like how is Jesus able to endure such

  406. torture and hurt and betrayal? Well, Hebrews explains how he

  407. got through it. Verse 2 of chapter 12 of

  408. Hebrews, the writer of Hebrews is saying we're looking to

  409. Jesus, who was the founder and perfector of our faith, move for

  410. the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the

  411. shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  412. You might read that and think, oh, OK, the joy that set was set

  413. before Jesus was, oh, he got to sit at the right hand of God.

  414. But that's not what Paul is saying.

  415. And other passages will even display this.

  416. Paul is saying that Jesus looked ahead to his resurrection and he

  417. looked ahead to our resurrections and looking ahead

  418. enabled him to endure the pain of the cross.

  419. OK the resurrection of him and his followers for the joy set

  420. before him he endured. Romans 8 he talks about this in

  421. verse 18. He says, for I consider that the

  422. the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing

  423. with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

  424. OK, The glory that is to be revealed to us is the

  425. resurrected Christ eternally with God.

  426. So how do we get through? How do we endure?

  427. How do we get through the heartache and the tragedies of

  428. life? Well, Paul is saying you get

  429. through the tragedies of your life the same way that Jesus got

  430. through the cross. And that is looking ahead to the

  431. glory that is set before us. And the glory that is ahead of

  432. us as Christians is the resurrection, not of Jesus.

  433. That's in the past. It's our resurrections to come.

  434. OK? Paul talks about this also in

  435. 2nd Corinthians 4, verse 17. He says for this light momentary

  436. affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory

  437. beyond all comparison. When we are resurrected, it will

  438. be eternal and it will be on comparison.

  439. And this is what gets us through the light momentary afflictions.

  440. And verse 18, he says as we look not to the things that are seen,

  441. but for the things that are unseen, for the things that are

  442. seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are

  443. eternal. When Paul says the things that

  444. are seen are transient, he means they're temporary.

  445. What you see now is temporary, but in the resurrected state

  446. that you will be in, it will be eternal.

  447. It will not fade. And it's an awareness of

  448. resurrection or eternity with God that enables us again to get

  449. through affliction. Paul talks about it again at

  450. First Corinthians 15. He says, behold, I tell you a

  451. mystery. We shall not all fall asleep,

  452. but we shall all be changed. And when he's saying we shall

  453. all be changed, I mean, he's saying we'll all be resurrected.

  454. To change equals resurrection. And he's saying it in the

  455. context of saying, hey, this is a mystery.

  456. I don't quite understand it. Paul has such great

  457. understanding about so many things, but it's understanding

  458. of the return of Jesus. It's a little mysterious, right?

  459. So anytime that you hear people talk about the return of Jesus,

  460. just know that Paul himself said it's a mystery, so approach it

  461. from that way. Now he's saying not all will

  462. die, but all will be changed. When Jesus returns, those who

  463. are alive will go to be with him, right?

  464. And then we will receive again the resurrected body.

  465. He says in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye at the last

  466. trumpet, For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be

  467. raised imperishable, and we shall all be changed.

  468. So at this point, I haven't hear intentional songs.

  469. I'm watching the clock. But some years ago I had a

  470. friend, his name was Nate Trotsky.

  471. He's, he's a Major League Baseball coach now and he had a

  472. school in California where I live and he was a musician and

  473. he asked me to write some baseball songs with him, right.

  474. And so I wrote songs about baseball.

  475. I don't know anything about baseball.

  476. And it convicted me. I thought, OK, if I'm writing

  477. songs about baseball, there are some things in our Christian

  478. truths that I've not written about yet.

  479. So I wanted to, I made a list of songs I wanted to write.

  480. I wanted to write a communion song.

  481. I wanted to write a blessing song, which I wrote.

  482. It's called May the Lord and I. And I wanted to write a song

  483. from this passage. I'm like, OK, if I can write

  484. baseball songs, I can write. So I wrote a song called At the

  485. Trumpet Sound. At the Trumpet Sound, You can

  486. find it, it's on YouTube. I look like I'm 18 and it was

  487. only like 20 years ago. So I've aged a lot since then.

  488. But so, but the idea was like, listen carefully.

  489. I'll tell you a mystery. We will not all fall asleep, but

  490. we'll all be changed in the twinkling of an eye.

  491. We will rise to be with him. We will meet him in the sky

  492. glorified. Something I can't remember.

  493. But at the trumpet sound. At the trumpet sound.

  494. Tears will all be lost away. No more doubt.

  495. Or I can't remember the words. You'll have to go see it.

  496. OK. I forget lyrics to songs I write

  497. even. OK, So go find it.

  498. OK. But I wanted to write a song

  499. about this passage. So Paul is saying watch this

  500. when? And this is really important to

  501. understand. Get this.

  502. Our bodies will be renewed. It's a mystery.

  503. And those who die, where do they go?

  504. You have loved ones that have maybe passed.

  505. Where are they now is a question.

  506. Well, here's what I think Jesus said to the man on the cross.

  507. You will be with me today in paradise.

  508. And there's lots of biblical president to say that.

  509. Watch this. When people die, their spirit

  510. goes to be with God. Their spirit goes to be with

  511. God, but they're not. They're resurrected body.

  512. They're not in it yet, but at the resurrection, at the

  513. resurrection, we will get our bodies back and they will be

  514. perfected. They will be in perfect state,

  515. right? But for now, their spirit is

  516. with God. So your loved ones who know

  517. Jesus, they're with God, but they will get their resurrected

  518. body. OK, That's important to know.

  519. So watch this, Paul says, for the perishable body must put on

  520. the imperishable, right? Our bodies right now are

  521. perishing, but he says your perishing body will put on

  522. imperishable. And you think about perishables

  523. at the grocery store, for this mortal body must put on

  524. immortality. We're mortal now, but our

  525. bodies, we're not going to float around in heaven like this

  526. little spirit ghost thing. No, we're going to get a body

  527. and it's going to be immortal, 54 says.

  528. When the perishable puts on the imperishable and the mortal puts

  529. on immortality, immortality then shall come to pass.

  530. The saying that is written, death is swallowed up in

  531. victory. Oh death, where is your victory?

  532. Oh death, where is your sting? Now it's really important to

  533. know where the then is. So he says when the imperishable

  534. puts on or when the perishable puts on imperishable and

  535. mortality, immortality, then we'll say to death, where is

  536. your sting? This is widely misunderstood by

  537. a lot of Christians because they think, oh, we get to say that

  538. now. Death, where's your sting?

  539. Death, you got no sting. You got no sting.

  540. It's like, no, death still hurts.

  541. And if you've lost a loved one, if you've lost someone you love

  542. and somebody goes, oh, death, where's your sting?

  543. And you go, I forget it, man. Death stings.

  544. It still hurts. Why?

  545. Because we're not yet to that last resurrection, right?

  546. Paul's saying at the trumpet sound right at the return of

  547. Jesus, when we're resurrected and perishable puts on and

  548. perishable, at that point, then we'll say to death, where is

  549. your sting? But right now we still live in

  550. perishable bodies and we still face death.

  551. But at the resurrection at the last, then we'll say to death,

  552. where is your sting? Now, Jesus had talked about his

  553. resurrection and he talked about the other resurrection that

  554. Paul's talking about the the resurrection of all of those who

  555. know Christ, right? And here are some occasions

  556. where he talked about it. He talked about in John Chapter

    John 11 chapter mention

  557. 11 to the sister Martha of Lazarus.

  558. OK, and I'm going to move through this part just quickly

  559. if you're looking at the notes, but she said that Jesus, I

  560. believe in the she said, I believe in the resurrection of

  561. the on the last day. OK, so Jesus says, you know, do

  562. you believe in the resurrection? She says, yes, I believe in the

  563. resurrection on the last day. This is the little resurrection

  564. that Paul's talking about. She's not saying to Jesus, I

  565. believe in your resurrection to come.

  566. I believe there will be a resurrection of the followers of

  567. Jesus to come. And why does she believe this?

  568. Because she had heard Jesus talk about it.

  569. OK, Jesus talked about in Luke chapter 14, he talks about this

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  570. resurrection to come in verse 12.

  571. He said, He said also to the man who had invited him, When you

  572. give a dinner, this is a When you give a dinner or a banquet,

  573. this was a religious leader Jesus was talking to.

  574. He said do not invite your friends or your brothers or your

  575. relatives or its neighbors, lest they also invite you in return

  576. and you be repaid. But when you give a feast,

  577. invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you

  578. will be blessed because they cannot repay you, for you will

  579. be repaid at the resurrection of the just When you do good.

  580. Don't just do it for those who can pay you back.

  581. Do it for those who can't pay you back, and then you'll

  582. receive your reward at the last resurrection, the resurrection

  583. of the just. So the resurrection of the just.

  584. Well, who are the just? That becomes a question.

  585. There's going to be a resurrection of the just.

  586. Who are they? Romans 425 Paul says he's

  587. Speaking of Jesus and he says who was delivered up for our

  588. trespasses and raised for our justification?

  589. Why was Jesus raised? What was the point of his

  590. resurrection? Our justification and the

  591. justification that we receive because of the resurrection of

  592. Jesus, it makes us part of the just.

  593. Now we are in the family, the gathering of the just, those

  594. who've been justified by Jesus. Jesus says there will be a

  595. resurrection of the just those who are justified and Paul talks

  596. about it in Romans 3 also he says for all fall short of the

  597. glory of God. Everybody, everybody, none of us

  598. are good enough to earn the love relationship with God.

  599. None of us but what happens all of sin fallen short but verse 24

  600. and are justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption

  601. that is in Christ Jesus. You and I are justified.

  602. Justified equals salvation. Justification equals salvation.

  603. We receive this Paul says because of the resurrection of

  604. Jesus. Now you need to know that on the

  605. cross where Jesus was. He's looking ahead to his

  606. resurrection and the resurrection of the just.

  607. And three of the Gospel writers point out that Jesus was mocked

  608. on the cross. And how was he mocked?

  609. They mocked him saying save yourself in Matthew 2739.

  610. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and

  611. saying you were you who would destroy the temple and rebuild

  612. it in three days. Save yourself.

  613. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross, save

  614. yourself. He'd said He could rebuild his

  615. body, his temple, in three days. So they're mocking him because

  616. of it. And in verse 42, he saved

  617. others. He cannot save himself.

  618. He's the king of Israel there. They go on and on and Mount Mark

  619. points the same thing out in Mark 15.

  620. They were mocking and saying, come on, save yourself, save

  621. yourself. And they even said if you save

  622. yourself, we'll believe in you. If you save yourself, then we'll

  623. believe. The ironic thing was that if

  624. Jesus would have saved himself, then we couldn't have been saved

  625. ours, our being saved, our salvation is because he was

  626. willing to not save himself. And this is important to know

  627. because this is sometimes again, they were they were twisted in

  628. their thinking. If you save yourself, don't

  629. believe in you. They missed it.

  630. Luke says it this way. One of the criminals who were

  631. hanged railed at him saying are you not the Christ save yourself

  632. and us. It's a big part of the story at

  633. the cross. Save yourself.

  634. But Jesus and John 1014 said I am the Good Shepherd.

  635. I know my own, and my own know me, and just as the Father knows

  636. me, I know the Father, and I lay down my life for the sheep.

  637. He volunteered and chose not to save himself so He could save

  638. us. Through the resurrection we

  639. received justification. Through the cross, we received

  640. payment for the penalty of our sin.

  641. But it connected with what happened on that Sunday morning

  642. leads to us finally someday being able to be part of the

  643. resurrection of the just. He knew all along he was going

  644. to lay down his life and then he was going to take it back up

  645. again. And he says this in verse 18.

  646. No one takes it from me, meaning his life, but I lay it down on

  647. my own accord. I have authority to lay it down

  648. and I have authority to take it up again.

  649. And this charge I received from my father says Jesus, Now in

  650. your notes, I said, tying it all together.

  651. And I put like a little bow there.

  652. You can see that. So I'm putting a bow on this,

  653. OK. The resurrection of Jesus is the

  654. greatest event, and it is of first importance according to

  655. Paul. And knowing that Jesus endured

  656. the cross, looking ahead to his resurrection and ours to come

  657. gives us an example of how we can get through anything that

  658. life brings because we look ahead to the resurrection of the

  659. just to come. So we can endure the struggles.

  660. We can endure the heartaches. Looking ahead, looking back at

  661. the resurrection of Jesus and looking ahead to ours to come.

  662. These are the resurrections. Let me pray for us.

  663. Wow, God, thank you for your truth found a word.

  664. I love God that the way that you laid out scripture, there's so

  665. many connecting parts of its tapestry.

  666. Romans points to the Old Testament and Romans points to

  667. the Gospels and the Gospels point elsewhere and the prophets

  668. point to Jesus. It's all connected and and I

  669. love growing in our understanding of how you did

  670. that. And I pray that you would help

  671. us as your followers, Jesus, to to be aware of your

  672. resurrection, how great it made a change in all of history and

  673. then help us to understand our resurrections to come in Jesus

  674. name. Before we leave this morning, I

  675. want to take just a brief moment and I want to explain to you

  676. that in order to become a Christian that it takes an

  677. effort on your part. You don't have to you don't have

  678. to perform well. You don't have to do so many

  679. good works or pay such penance really to become a follower of

  680. Jesus. You have to confess with your

  681. mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord and then you

  682. shall be saved according to Romans.

  683. OK, so, so if you were maybe baptized as an infant, your

  684. parents intentions were great, but that doesn't seal you for

  685. becoming part of the justified by Jesus at the at the, at the

  686. resurrection. So this morning, Easter Sunday,

  687. 2026 would be a great, great, great Sunday to say, Jesus, I

  688. want to take that step and I want to surrender my life to you

  689. and I want to become a follower and I want to welcome you to be

  690. the Lord of my life and receive your forgiveness.

  691. And what we believe is that you receive eternal life and it

  692. starts now. You don't have to wait till you

  693. die to receive eternal purpose in life.

  694. You don't just endure this life. No, our our pursuit of Jesus

  695. makes this life so much more full and meaningful and his

  696. presence and his Holy Spirit. So this morning I want to pray

  697. and my heart and hope would be that if you've never decided to

  698. follow Jesus and you would decide to do it this morning and

  699. then that you would tell somebody, you would tell a

  700. family member, a friend that you made the decision to become a

  701. follower of Jesus. So I'm going to pray and my

  702. encouragement to you is echo this prayer with me.

  703. You could pray Heavenly Father, I come to you in Jesus name and

  704. I believe God, you're drawing me.

  705. You're you're you want relationship with me.

  706. And so you've gone this great lengths to do it and I see it

  707. and so not of my own performance or hoops that I've jumped

  708. through, but simply by believing because you've made us to

  709. believe God, I pray that you would come into my life.

  710. Jesus come and reign and rule me.

  711. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and teach me in your ways Today

  712. I make the decision to confess my faith in you and accept your

  713. salvation and your lordship in my life.

  714. So Jesus, come reign and rule in me.

  715. I pray in Jesus name and everyone loudly together said

  716. Amen. If you did make that decision, I

  717. encourage you, tell somebody, reach out to me, tell a friend,

  718. a family member, and we want to encourage you in your pursuit of

  719. Jesus. Let's all stand together and

  720. before you head out, I want to say a blessing over you.

  721. And again, thank you for being here this morning.

  722. So great to see you all right, if you'll prepare your heart to

  723. receive this blessing before you go.

  724. And now may the Lord bless you and keep you and may make his

  725. face to shine upon you. And may the joy of the Lord that

  726. is unspeakable and full of glory, may it abound to you.

  727. And may the peace of God that passes all understanding, may it

  728. surprise you in the midst of all the challenges.

  729. That life brings. And then may the mercies of the

  730. Lord, in other words, the forgiveness of God.

  731. That's new every morning. May it be especially new to you

  732. and your mornings to come. And now may the Lord Jesus

  733. Christ guard your heart and your mind, your salt and your light.

  734. Go now and be salt and light unto the world.

  735. You are blessed and we'll see you again soon.
