  1. you might have heard of the uh new

  2. pastor at a church and he was uh getting

  3. around visiting all of his new

  4. congregants and he turned up to one

  5. house and it was a bit strange cuz a car

  6. was in the driveway and he was sure they

  7. were home but no one was answering the

  8. door and so he knocked on the door

  9. knocked again knocked again no answers

  10. so in a little bit of Pastor humor he

  11. pulled out his business card and wrote

  12. on it Revelation 3:20 and slid it under

    Revelation 3:20

  13. the door and so uh the next week after

  14. the service the same business card was

  15. in the offering plate but underneath

  16. Revelation 3:20 the person had written

    Revelation 3:20

  17. Genesis 3:10 and uh revelation 3:20 says

    Genesis 3:10 Revelation 3:20

  18. behold I stand at the door and knock and

  19. revel uh sorry Genesis 3:10 says I heard

    Genesis 3:10

  20. your voice and I hid because I was naked

  21. so

  22. uh so this morning uh that's got nothing

  23. to do with anything we are kicking off

  24. our uh Vision series our uh summer

  25. Vision series and uh going to talk a

  26. little bit about vision but I know over

  27. the next few weeks but I know for some

  28. people it can even be like Why do

  29. churches talk about Vision like isn't

  30. that a corporate thing like it's a

  31. commercialization of church and so

  32. sometimes people will give you feedback

  33. like there's a vision it's called the

  34. word of God and uh churches shouldn't

  35. have vision statements because it's uh

  36. feels a little bit too uh commercial and

  37. aren't we supposed to be family and so

  38. this morning I want to talk about why

  39. vision and uh I'd start by saying this

  40. that it is uh in it is intrinsic to

  41. Being Human to live with a sense of

  42. vision like we actually cannot help but

  43. live out of vision vision is a preferred

  44. picture of the future right now some

  45. people are having a vision of this

  46. sermon being over and them eating the

  47. lunch that they want to have we call

  48. those people males and so right now

  49. they're thinking their vision of the

  50. Preferred Future is a steak sandwich or

  51. a um something else but we cannot help

  52. as humans but live out of vision and

  53. when we look in the Garden of Eden God

  54. originally gave a mandate he said be

  55. fruitful and multiply and then he said

  56. take dominion and so he was actually

  57. inviting Adam and Eve into a picture of

  58. the

  59. future McManus said says this ants

  60. create colonies bees create hives and

  61. humans create Futures it is intrinsic to

  62. Being Human that we actually have vision

  63. and create

  64. Futures you see what the thing is vision

  65. is a powerful tool to form Futures and

  66. the reason why some of us would have a

  67. little bit of um apprehension when it

  68. comes to the idea of a church having

  69. vision is we realize that Vision forms

  70. Futures and so it can either be a

  71. powerful thing that forms a great future

  72. or Vision can also be a thing that forms

  73. a terrible future and so the uniting

  74. thing about the greatest atrocities that

  75. have ever happened in our world and the

  76. greatest uh uh accomplishments and

  77. triumphs is that both of them have

  78. primarily come out of

  79. vision and so vision is a powerful tool

  80. I remember when I was about 19 we were

  81. at a church that was in a very low

  82. socioeconomic area and what we had was

  83. an established church and so it was an

  84. established church of middle class

  85. people who predominantly did not live in

  86. the area of the church and so the church

  87. was now in a low socioeconomic area and

  88. what would happen is we would drive in

  89. we would go to church and then we would

  90. drive back to our middle class area and

  91. as a result this community was really in

  92. Dire Straits but the church didn't have

  93. a whole lot of connection points with

  94. the community and so some of us just

  95. began to wonder what would happen if we

  96. how could we Outreach to this community

  97. what would that look like and so we

  98. decided to start a youth droing center

  99. on a Friday night now none of us had any

  100. experience of running a youth droing

  101. center none of us had any skills to run

  102. a youth droing center and the only skill

  103. that we actually had was that someone

  104. was able to go onto a computer and make

  105. a flyer saying that a youth dropping

  106. Center's starting on a Friday night from

  107. 7 till till 9: and so we sent out this

  108. flyer and wondered if anyone would turn

  109. up and the first week there were about

  110. four uh uh young people from the

  111. community turned turned up and we were

  112. amazed cuz all we'd done was dropped a

  113. fly we're like probably no one will be

  114. there and within a few months we were

  115. getting 30 40 50 uh young people from

  116. around the community coming in each time

  117. we'd share the gospel for 5 minutes and

  118. what we called a a God Spot and we would

  119. have leaders cuz we had no idea what we

  120. were doing we'd have someone rosted to

  121. pray the whole time so we'd have

  122. different leaders on during the night

  123. for half hour blocks up in the prayer

  124. room praying because we we actually had

  125. no idea what we were doing we just had a

  126. vision and see vision is a powerful Tool

  127. uh in those days I um as time progressed

  128. I was working at Inland Revenue I

  129. actually got a promotion and was doing

  130. all the training and this Youth Center

  131. began to take off in such a way that I

  132. actually chose to take a demotion so I

  133. could go and work one day a week because

  134. the vision of what God was doing was

  135. actually more more significant to me

  136. than the promotion at work you see

  137. vision is a powerful tool Vision forms

  138. Futures and so this morning I want to

  139. look a little bit at the life of Joseph

  140. and how Vision are applied in his life

  141. and then talk about a couple of warnings

  142. and

  143. um hopefully land in a good

  144. place uh you know uh I'm sure some here

  145. will be familiar with the story of

  146. Joseph uh if not from the Bible maybe

  147. from the stage play um but you know

  148. Joseph um we're going to go through his

  149. story and uh there's going to be a bit

  150. of uh scripture there and uh we'll read

  151. a little bit of scripture and we'll also

  152. just uh explain a little bit of what the

  153. story is and in Genesis 37 it says

  154. Joseph had his dream and when he told it

  155. to his brothers they hated him all the

  156. more he said listen to the dream I had

  157. we were binding sheath of grain out of

  158. the field when suddenly my sheath Rose

  159. and stood upright while your sheets

  160. gathered around mine and bowed down to

  161. it that's a good Vision to share with

  162. your brothers right God's given me a

  163. vision you're all going to bow down to

  164. me Joseph was

  165. already his dad's favorite anyone else

  166. grow up in a family where their brother

  167. was dad's favorite I mean I know my Dad

  168. loved us all the same but my brother at

  169. like 15 was six foot tall and you would

  170. think that was the most amazing thing

  171. ever my dad was about 5'8 and everywhere

  172. my dad went oh Jason's 6' tall the other

  173. thing was he got an A+ in school maths

  174. and so he was a math nerd and he was 6

  175. foot tall and so in my dad's eyes my

  176. dad's looking up to him going wow it's a

  177. I have the son and uh I um did not have

  178. neither the physical prowess nor quite

  179. the brains of my brother and so even

  180. though I know he loved us all the same I

  181. knew there was something there was a

  182. glint in My Father's Eyes about uh my

  183. brother being 6 foot tall and so

  184. Joseph's brothers not only saw their

  185. dad's affirmation towards Joseph but

  186. then they actually had him share his

  187. vision that God had given him and then

  188. he had another dream and said listen I

  189. had another dream and this time the Sun

  190. and the Moon and 11 stars were bowing

  191. down to me and so you can imagine his

  192. reps really going up with his brothers

  193. right and so funnily enough they decide

  194. that they're going to deal to him and so

  195. um they take him and they're going to

  196. throw him in a pit and then as a result

  197. they actually sell him into slavery and

  198. so they sell their brother into slavery

  199. they go home uh they tell the the dad

  200. that he is dead and he's sold into

  201. slavery and what happens is he ends up

  202. uh being sold into a house Piper's house

  203. and he is working as a slave and as he's

  204. there as a as a slave uh Piper's wife

  205. begins to have um a little bit of a

  206. thing for Joseph and so she uh

  207. propositions him but because he's an

  208. upright man he actually uh turns her

  209. down and says uh no thank you and at

  210. that moment she accuses him of rape and

  211. so he actually ends up going to prison

  212. you can see his dream of everyone bowing

  213. down TS working out really well about

  214. now as uh he is in prison and uh so he's

  215. in prison and while he's in prison two

  216. of his cellmates have dreams uh you and

  217. they they both have dreams and Joseph

  218. interprets the dreams and he interprets

  219. the dreams and what he says is that the

  220. baker is going to die and that the

  221. butler or the cup Bearer is going to be

  222. restored to uh his position and that's

  223. exactly what happens and so he says to

  224. the cup Bearer hey I've interpreted your

  225. dream you're going to be restored to

  226. your position but when you get there you

  227. need to remember me please remember me

  228. and help get me out of prison well that

  229. happens the guy gets restored but he

  230. forgets about Joseph and so Joseph is

  231. still left in prison well

  232. uh fast forward a little bit and Pharaoh

  233. has a dream and uh no one in the land

  234. can interpret the dream and all of a

  235. sudden the cup Bearer remembers hey

  236. there was this guy in prison who can

  237. interpret dreams and so um they call for

  238. Joseph and in Genesis 41 41 Pharaoh said

  239. to Joseph Pharaoh said to Joseph I had a

  240. dream and no one can interpret it but

  241. I've heard it said that when you hear a

  242. dream you can interpret it I cannot do

  243. it Joseph replied but God will give

  244. Pharaoh the answer he desires and so

  245. then he goes on to share his dream and

  246. what he says is hey I had a dream of

  247. seven fat cows and then a dream of seven

  248. skinny cows and Joseph has the

  249. interpretation that the land is going to

  250. go through seven years of plenty and

  251. then it's going to go through seven

  252. years of famine and so Joseph has the

  253. dream in the interpretation but then he

  254. also has the wisdom

  255. to to tell them that

  256. uh that they need to prepare for in the

  257. seven years of plenty for the seven

  258. years of famine that are coming right so

  259. it's a a 14e span it's like seven years

  260. is going to be famine uh sorry plenty

  261. and then seven years is going to be

  262. famine and so he says hey you need to

  263. prepare for this and Pharaoh says to him

  264. well there's no one like you so he

  265. actually puts him in charge of preparing

  266. for the famine so Joseph becomes second

  267. only to Pharaoh in the land he's got

  268. Authority on everything and his job is

  269. to make sure that they are ready for

  270. when the famine

  271. hits and so uh what happens is uh as a

  272. result um obviously the famine does hit

  273. and uh Egypt has food where everyone

  274. else is is running out because for seven

  275. years they've built store cities and

  276. they've built storage places and the

  277. food is being stored so that when the

  278. famine hits there is food available and

  279. so what happens is Joseph's brothers

  280. come to Egypt to get food and it's a bit

  281. of a drawn out story but after a while

  282. Joseph finally reveals himself to his

  283. brothers and he is like it is because of

  284. uh me that you are

  285. able to have food and he he says to

  286. um he says to his

  287. brothers for two years now there has

  288. been famine in the land and for the next

  289. 5 years there will be no plowing or

  290. reaping but God sent me ahead of you uh

  291. for a Remnant on the earth and to save

  292. your lives by a great Deliverance so

  293. then it is not you who sent me here but

  294. God see his brothers thought they had

  295. sold him into slavery but Joseph

  296. actually realized that the point of what

  297. he W went through was that God wanted to

  298. bring a great

  299. deliverance and see sometimes even when

  300. it comes to say church we come in

  301. knowing our Brokenness and what we need

  302. and yes the Lord wants to minister in

  303. our needs but he actually doesn't want

  304. it just to be about us he actually wants

  305. to see a great Deliverance in Tonga

  306. Moana so he actually wants to take you

  307. through a process so that you and I can

  308. be Salt and Light so that you and I can

  309. be his hands and his feet so that we can

  310. be involved in a great Deliverance you

  311. see Joseph started off having a vision

  312. about who he would be and in the end he

  313. went through a process that brought him

  314. to a revelation that was actually the

  315. was never actually about me it was about

  316. God bringing a great

  317. deliverance and we know that God brings

  318. a great Deliverance through what Christ

  319. did on the cross and then in his grace

  320. he chooses to use his people so there

  321. was something that happened for

  322. Joseph as he walked through this process

  323. where all of a sudden the vision

  324. came

  325. about to bring great

  326. Deliverance here's the interesting thing

  327. that happens though that they saved the

  328. seven years it's amazing many years

  329. later what happens at the start of the

  330. book of

  331. Exodus is uh it says in Exodus 6 now

  332. Joseph and all his brothers and all that

  333. generation died but the Israelites were

  334. exceedingly fruitful they multiplied

  335. greatly and increased in number and

  336. became so numerous that the land was

  337. filled with them then a new king to whom

  338. Joseph meant nothing came to power in

  339. Egypt and he said look the Israelites

  340. have become far too numerous for us come

  341. we must deal shely with them or they

  342. will become even more numerous and they

  343. will join out and fight against us and

  344. here's what he says put slave masters

  345. over them oppress them with forced

  346. labors labor and they forced them to

  347. build a python and rameses as store

  348. cities for Pharaoh see here the original

  349. Vision was actually from God see there

  350. was originally a vision from God that

  351. was like Hey to save people from this

  352. famine we need to build store cities

  353. right now hundreds of years later what

  354. happens is the Pharaoh takes that very

  355. system the very Vision that was

  356. originally birthed to to create

  357. Deliverance for people and he takes that

  358. system and he says now people are going

  359. to be enslaved in working to that system

  360. you see God has systems and structures

  361. in place to bring about people's

  362. deliverance and what the enemy tries to

  363. do is corrupt those systems and

  364. structures so that people actually end

  365. up in bondage serving a system rather

  366. than the Deliverance that's and we we we

  367. see it in all kinds of things you know

  368. how many times does the governments all

  369. around the world try and set something

  370. up that is supposed to be a blessing for

  371. people and in the end the structure

  372. actually does more damage than it does

  373. good and all those who don't like

  374. politics said

  375. amen you know how many times do

  376. corporations start off with a great

  377. vision and become toxic over time you

  378. know what about churches what happens

  379. when churches start with great visions

  380. of honoring Jesus and then needed

  381. systems and structures begin but

  382. something begins to happen where now all

  383. of a sudden the purpose of the church

  384. seems to be to sustain the structures

  385. rather than to sustain a move of God and

  386. you know uh over the last couple of

  387. years we have seen so many scandals in

  388. churches where leaders have fallen where

  389. there's been corruption where there's

  390. been all kinds of things happening and

  391. often the fruit of it has actually been

  392. that the church has ended up having uh

  393. systems and structures for people to

  394. serve rather than having systems and

  395. structures that serve the people

  396. churches get

  397. toxic when P when pastors want people to

  398. serve a vision rather than have a vision

  399. that serves the

  400. people churches get toxic when

  401. leadership has a particular desire to be

  402. honored in a way and sees people as the

  403. way to achieve what they want right like

  404. uh you know you don't have to go very

  405. far to have seen that and maybe some of

  406. us have seen that and that's why when we

  407. hear this idea of vision we oh I don't

  408. really like that you know I've been in a

  409. church before where someone from the

  410. front

  411. said you know you're to lay your life

  412. down for the vision of this house and

  413. can I just say I don't think anyone

  414. should ever lay their life down for the

  415. vision of our church but you can lay

  416. your life down for the cause of Christ

  417. that would be something worthy of living

  418. laying your life down

  419. for and so you know we have to be

  420. guarded against the danger of mission

  421. drift and vision drift and that we end

  422. up with uh people serving systems and

  423. structures and leaders demanding

  424. things and that would be a toxic

  425. environment so churches get toxic when

  426. pastors want people to serve a vision

  427. rather than having a vision to serve

  428. people churches get self-absorbed when

  429. people want a church that suits them

  430. rather than a church that challenges

  431. them and we live in a world where it is

  432. constantly reinforced that we have the

  433. ability to choose things exactly how we

  434. like them do you know they say in

  435. Starbucks now with the number of milk

  436. choices they are uh trim almond soy

  437. coconut oat fill and the number of sizes

  438. which I won't pronounce all but Grande

  439. ventti the four different sizes plus the

  440. syrups and there are nine different

  441. syrups hazelnut vanilla just in case you

  442. don't want regular vanilla there's

  443. sugar-free vanilla with four sizes

  444. however many milk Choice it is nine

  445. syrups do you know you can build over

  446. 300 billion drinks

  447. different drinks on the Starbucks menu I

  448. mean I don't know what kind of freak

  449. shows combining nine syrups with oat

  450. milk but anyway uh you know or your half

  451. shot or as I call it a cup of Y bother

  452. um you know but

  453. there's and something as simple as

  454. coffee literally you have 300 billion

  455. options when you go to Starbucks of how

  456. you want your coffee and that is how our

  457. our world has sold us with consumerism

  458. that we get to choose now I've already

  459. said I understand the dangers of toxic

  460. leadership When leaders want to demand

  461. things over people but I also know

  462. there's a danger if we bring the

  463. mentality of what suits us to church I

  464. want what suits me you see the thing is

  465. probably most of us have chosen I hope

  466. this church CU you're like wow we we

  467. kind of like it this is actually what

  468. suits me this is good I I enjoy it like

  469. there were plenty of other choices you

  470. could have gone down the road but you

  471. came here this morning uh maybe it's

  472. your first time maybe you're not coming

  473. back I don't know but maybe you loved it

  474. but we've chosen to be

  475. here because it suits

  476. us but what happens when God begins to

  477. challenge us you see vision is designed

  478. that we would look Beyond ourselves and

  479. actually look to what God is wanting to

  480. do through us you see God establishes

  481. systems and

  482. structures because some people just say

  483. well no churches shouldn't need them why

  484. does churches have buildings we don't

  485. need them

  486. well we they need to be servants to

  487. purpose

  488. we never come to serve a building but

  489. the building serves what God is doing

  490. and so systems and structures are needed

  491. because they actually serve what God is

  492. doing but they need to remain in the

  493. place of serving what God is doing

  494. rather than us beginning to serve the

  495. systems and

  496. structures so God has a heart that there

  497. would be systems and

  498. structures that

  499. actually help bring a mighty Deliverance

  500. for Tang Moana he actually wants systems

  501. and structures that serve and help

  502. people being set free the kingdom being

  503. released the gospel being preached it is

  504. on the heart of God you see I shared

  505. about our youth droing center it was

  506. called Ground Zero what happened after

  507. about 2 years was we were getting 150

  508. young people along and uh the only way I

  509. know how to describe them is hood rats

  510. they were hood rats they weren't like um

  511. your Pleasant to be around young people

  512. in fact one night I remember a guy

  513. walked past I was telling the youth

  514. leaders on Friday night this guy walks

  515. past and some of the kids start swearing

  516. at him he was just walking by the street

  517. but as I said it was a rough

  518. neighborhood so I go hey guys be quiet

  519. this guy turns around and I'll give you

  520. the PG version of what he said I'm going

  521. to go home and get a gun and come back

  522. and shoot the lot of

  523. you and I was kind of like how serious

  524. do I need to take that

  525. like I don't know what I found out was

  526. if you phone the police and say hey

  527. someone just said they're going home to

  528. grab a gun and to come back and shoot

  529. the lot of us you get a police car there

  530. and about one minute like this two

  531. police cars pull up I'm like he was just

  532. walking down there they go um grab the

  533. guy and they actually go to his house

  534. they find a couple of unregistered

  535. firearms now I don't know if he was

  536. going to come back and shoot us but they

  537. said uh he'll actually spend a night in

  538. the cells just to uh teach him that uh

  539. we'll be confiscating his weapons and

  540. he'll have some lower charges but he'll

  541. also spend a night in the CES tonight so

  542. that he learns that you cannot go around

  543. telling young people that you're going

  544. to come and shoot the lot of them um it

  545. was provoked by some language from our

  546. young people and so what was happening

  547. with we had 150 of them and uh knives

  548. were being pulled out on a uh on a

  549. Friday night we actually had a one of

  550. our youth leaders um who uh was um

  551. probably my age now but back then I was

  552. like man he was an older guy he was an

  553. older guy in our mix and uh he sort of

  554. oversaw it and uh he was so excited

  555. about go what G was doing had some

  556. friends over from Australia he's like

  557. come let me show you what God's doing

  558. amongst young people they he took them

  559. along and the next morning his friends

  560. said to him we want to take you out they

  561. took him and his wife out they sat them

  562. down they said we're really concerned

  563. you need to stop this like we are

  564. worried that you're going to be killed

  565. like you should not be working with

  566. these young people but the reality is

  567. this as it grew to 150 what happened was

  568. we needed so much work to keep everyone

  569. safe and we spent so much time putting

  570. out fires that we were no longer Mission

  571. focused we still preach the gospel but

  572. man we were just running around putting

  573. out fires every night phoning the police

  574. Banning kids uh taking them away like

  575. just working managing and all of a

  576. sudden it was like manam we're no longer

  577. filling our vision what had happened was

  578. a system and structure of a Friday night

  579. that was designed to reach people was

  580. now actually being a place where they

  581. would come and create trouble and get

  582. further into a hole where they would

  583. come and buy drugs or they would so we

  584. actually had to strip it back and say

  585. this is fine if we want to have an

  586. Empire this is fine if I want to be able

  587. to say wow we have 150 young people

  588. coming to our youth center on a Friday

  589. night like as a young person I really

  590. enjoyed being able to tell people that

  591. like wow we've got 150 young people

  592. coming to our youth center the problem

  593. was we were no longer impacting them we

  594. were now serving a system and a

  595. structure rather than a vision and so we

  596. actually had to say We'll shut it down

  597. for four weeks um just close it off and

  598. those hopefully those who were coming

  599. from further a field would stop coming

  600. and then we could start it back up again

  601. with a smaller core because we realized

  602. we were not interested in building an

  603. empire but we were interested in the

  604. Kingdom of of God being Advanced can I

  605. tell you as a church I'm so grateful for

  606. our facilities I'm so grateful for our

  607. systems and structures but we are never

  608. interested in building an empire we are

  609. interested in the seeing the kingdom

  610. Advance we are not interested in saying

  611. we serve the vision of the house but

  612. we're interested in a vision that serves

  613. both you and others that invites you in

  614. to a place of influence where we

  615. together make a difference in the city

  616. because we believe with all our hearts

  617. that God wants to bring a great

  618. deliverance and that looks like

  619. individuals every life that encounters

  620. and has the blood of Jesus applied to it

  621. experiences a great deliverance and that

  622. is what we're here for we're not here to

  623. serve a pastor's Vision we're not here

  624. to just have our needs net our needs met

  625. but we are here to see God bring a great

  626. deliverance and so why do we

  627. talk

  628. Vision the reason we talk vision is to

  629. orient our church in the direction of

  630. the kingdom of

  631. God you see it's not enough to just say

  632. well yeah the vision is to preach the

  633. gospel it's so what does that look like

  634. for our city what does it look like for

  635. this moment in time what does the

  636. kingdom of God manifest in Tura in

  637. 2025 what does that look like and that

  638. is and what does it look like for us

  639. because we realize we will only be one

  640. small part of the picture but what part

  641. is God calling us to play and so we

  642. believe as a church that we are leaning

  643. into these three words prayer presence

  644. and Mission and that you know that's

  645. some of what God is really calling us to

  646. be as a church and that that will be

  647. stretching for us and it will be growing

  648. for us but that as we orientate

  649. ourselves in that direction it is not in

  650. the interest of having a vision for the

  651. sake of a vision but it is to actually

  652. ensure that we are seeing his kingdom

  653. come his will be done here as it is in

  654. heaven and so I'm going to ask the

  655. worship team to come and we're just

  656. going to sing uh a final song in just a

  657. moment and really what I wanted to

  658. finish with even as we're talking about

  659. vision is by us just singing a song that

  660. just orientates our hearts again that

  661. we're actually not building vision for

  662. the sake of vision but actually

  663. everything is about him everything is

  664. about the king Kingdom father thank you

  665. for lord your heart towards

  666. us father thank you that you desire to

  667. bring a great deliverance and Lord we

  668. know that's your work but you ask us to

  669. partner with you and so father I pray

  670. for us as a church Lord I pray that you

  671. would help us Lord to focus on the

  672. kingdom and on what you are doing and

  673. what you want to bring Lord may we never

  674. be people that are just serving a

  675. pastor's Vision or ser serving a system

  676. or serving a structure or serving our

  677. own needs but Lord may we be serving

  678. your kingdom and Lord we pray for our

  679. city Lord we pray for our neighbors we

  680. pray for our workmates we pray for our

  681. families Lord we ask that you would

  682. bring a great deliverance and father you

  683. would help us as a church to be faithful

  684. to the part that we need to play and

  685. bringing that Deliverance in jesus' name

  686. amen amen amen
