  1. listen wura Welcome to our first limited

  2. edition short season podcast and uh

  3. We've creatively titled this introducing

  4. lent because uh as a church we're

  5. leaning into lent and so we're having

  6. three podcast episodes come out where

  7. we're having different guests uh come in

  8. and maybe just help us on this journey

  9. of understanding what lent is and so

  10. today I'm joined by Joseph mccy uh

  11. Pastor from St Luke's it's awesome to

  12. have you here I feel like the

  13. Pentecostal thing that is usually said

  14. is this is my great friend you know and

  15. uh the other adjective sorry adjective

  16. of course would be phenomenal oh he's a

  17. phenomenal Communicator um so actually

  18. Joseph is my new friend we spent a

  19. couple of hours in a cafe uh late last

  20. year and uh I actually don't know if

  21. he's a phenomenal Communicator or not

  22. but he was pretty engaging in the cafe

  23. and so I thought it'd be amazing to have

  24. him on and just uh unpack some of what

  25. link is with him Joseph do you want to

  26. introduce yourself yeah J thanks Aaron

  27. yeah I I I'm not sure if I'm a

  28. phenomenal Communicator or not but I'll

  29. do our best to answer questions and to

  30. be helpful uh yeah my name is Joseph uh

  31. a pastor a church called St Luke's here

  32. in Tonga as well I've been doing I've

  33. been involved in pastoral ministry here

  34. in Tonga for 25 plus years now youth

  35. pastor associate pastor and then we

  36. planted St Luke's which has been a

  37. wonderful Journey about 15 years ago uh

  38. I do have a sideline interest in

  39. Theology and scripture well it's not

  40. really a sideline industry it is kind of

  41. my main industry but I love that so I've

  42. done a I did a um Ministry internship

  43. diploma did a master's degree did a

  44. doctorate uh largely exploring kind of

  45. Pentecostal Faith uh re-engaging with

  46. some of the wider Church traditions in

  47. the hope of finding uh forms of faith

  48. and spiritual practice and spiritual

  49. disciplines that would be engaging in

  50. the 21st century and help people in the

  51. Journey of following Jesus in the

  52. context we find ourselves so yeah that's

  53. what keeps me busy awesome well I have

  54. brought you here to discuss lint not

  55. from an impartation here group because

  56. um you know I I see those locks

  57. the and I actually had a guy in our

  58. church in Alex 80 years old who always

  59. wanted to lay hands on me and command

  60. follicles to grow and it got a little

  61. bit awkward after a while but anyway

  62. we'll uh we'll leave that to the side um

  63. so Joseph is a doctor it makes me more

  64. comfortable thinking of as Dr J Mack

  65. because you know I'm kind of across from

  66. a doctor but uh it's awesome to have him

  67. here and certainly um I know I've been

  68. journeying with ly for about uh this

  69. will be my fifth year participating

  70. event but I know you've been journeying

  71. a little bit longer than that um Joseph

  72. but if we were to look from a historical

  73. perspective and even just start with the

  74. question what is lint um do you want to

  75. maybe RI off that a little bit yeah for

  76. sure um well essentially as the early

  77. church developed into what we you know

  78. you know the you know started to develop

  79. as uh time goes by into the era of the

  80. church fathers and the apostolic fathers

  81. um one of the things that was really

  82. important for them was to orientate

  83. their their life as Christians as Christ

  84. followers in the Life of Christ uh so

  85. initially that is as simple as gathering

  86. for worship on a Sunday and a Sunday

  87. would be referred to as the Lord's day

  88. and so the early church and early

  89. Christians they'd begin to gather on the

  90. Lord's Day on a Sunday but then they

  91. were what what happened over time was

  92. they developed this thing called the

  93. lurgical calendar or the church calendar

  94. or the Christian calendar it's referred

  95. to in different names but essentially

  96. that a way for them not just to

  97. orientate a Sunday but to orientate time

  98. itself in the Life of Christ uh in the

  99. various um the various kind of chapters

  100. or scenes that we see through the

  101. gospels of the Life of Christ the most

  102. common one that we all we would all know

  103. uh no matter our church background would

  104. be obviously Easter and Christmas so uh

  105. we celebrate we have church on Sundays

  106. we celebrate Easter we celebrate

  107. Christmas well those are all parts of

  108. the lurgical calendar uh but it is a lot

  109. wider it is a lot broader than that and

  110. then hoping to orientate time itself in

  111. the Life of Christ so that we could

  112. learn the lessons from the different the

  113. different seasons of Christ life uh they

  114. came up with uh what they call lint lint

  115. just means um Springtime or or spring

  116. season and lent essentially uh

  117. recognizes the the 40 days that Jesus

  118. Journey Through the Wilderness it's the

  119. 40 days of Temptation uh that Jesus face

  120. praying and fasting in the wilderness uh

  121. and they they they aligned that with the

  122. season that that takes us into Easter uh

  123. in the northern hemisphere Easter

  124. happens in spring so lent is those kind

  125. of last 40 days of winter uh so it's

  126. this kind of countdown to New Life New

  127. Beginnings that we celebrate uh in the

  128. resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday

  129. but in those 40 days beforehand they

  130. recognize the need to uh also the season

  131. of fasting a season of repentance and

  132. acknowledging uh that even as Jesus

  133. walked through the Wilderness even as

  134. Jesus you know went through trials and

  135. tribulations it wasn't always plain sely

  136. uh we as Christ followers go through

  137. those kinds of Seasons as well and those

  138. are not Seasons where God has abandoned

  139. us or where we're alone but those are

  140. seasons when we learn to uh appreciate

  141. that Christ is present with us even in

  142. the wilderness and even in the desert

  143. and even in the trying times so so they

  144. so lenters the 40 days leading into

  145. Easter it's a time of prayer it's a time

  146. of fasting it's a time of repentance

  147. it's a time of giving and recognizing

  148. that um essentially life isn't always um

  149. you know high fives and happy days but

  150. there are other Seasons as well but

  151. Christ is faithful in that with of

  152. course the big countdown being that lent

  153. gives way ultimately to Easter and

  154. Resurrection Life and New Hope and New

  155. Beginnings yeah that's the that's the

  156. heart of it they wanted to the the early

  157. church wants us to live out of every

  158. facet of Christ's life and lent

  159. recognize that the Wilderness experience

  160. is something that Christ navigated and

  161. we will as well awesome so historically

  162. like if we went back to the early church

  163. or um and slightly past that what what

  164. would have there been their practice of

  165. like I've read some of they wouldn't eat

  166. meat or what was kind of their practice

  167. um of commonly in the in those early

  168. days yeah well the early church fasted a

  169. lot they they they fast two days a week

  170. from memory Wednesdays and Fridays were

  171. fast days but lent was a time for

  172. particular fasting it was a particular

  173. season of uh you know repentance it's

  174. not like a somber season it's not like a

  175. Down Season it's not a depressing season

  176. but it's a sober season where we

  177. recognize uh you know some of the trials

  178. and tribulations of life so it would

  179. begin on Ash Wednesday well it begin on

  180. shro Tuesday even so shr Tuesday uh was

  181. the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday sh

  182. Tuesday you uh or no we might you might

  183. commonly know that or or or might be

  184. familiar if use the term pancake Tuesday

  185. so pancake Tuesday was kind of about

  186. eating up the last of the the good food

  187. in one sense we might say uh then you go

  188. to Ash Wednesday where there's a service

  189. where the sign of the cross would be

  190. performed it's a sign of repentance and

  191. a sign of of of trust in Jesus so they

  192. would fast uh for those 40 days

  193. different people would fast different

  194. things some people would fast for from

  195. food for 40 days but that would that's

  196. pretty um not hardcore but it's just

  197. like that wasn't the practice of

  198. everybody it could be giving up meat it

  199. could be giving up um certain meals uh

  200. with the idea being that what you would

  201. put into meals you could set some of

  202. that money aside to give to people time

  203. that you would spend eating you could

  204. set that aside for prayer so yeah um so

  205. fasting prayer uh giving uh repentance

  206. um those would those would be the Fairly

  207. common practices for those 40 days

  208. leading into leading into EAS awesome

  209. and am I right or I might be wrong did

  210. uh did Sunday used be a rest day from it

  211. so they wouldn't actually fast or on the

  212. Sunday is that right yeah correct you

  213. know in church history Sunday is always

  214. the Lord's day or another way of talking

  215. about Sunday is always Easter it's

  216. always Easter Sunday and then the Easter

  217. Sunday that's like the big capital E

  218. Easter Sunday so yeah there is a

  219. tradition that Sunday is always a day of

  220. Celebration rejoicing recognizing that

  221. Christ has risen from the dead with of

  222. course Easter Sunday or Resurrection

  223. Sunday being the big celebration of that

  224. so yeah they would often not fast on uh

  225. on a Sunday uh in modern times uh some

  226. people choose to break their fast on a

  227. Sunday others choose to fast through uh

  228. let's say you're giving up um Netflix

  229. for Lent let's say you you you binge too

  230. much uh television so you've given up

  231. Netflix for length wow for some people

  232. like giving it up for six days and then

  233. binge watching all of the episodes on a

  234. Sunday um I think that maybe you know

  235. you're finding some small print that

  236. gets you out of it uh so some people

  237. would go look I'm going to give up

  238. Netflix for the entirety of Lent others

  239. though who maybe have given up uh coffee

  240. for lint something like that they might

  241. have a coffee on a Sunday and then stra

  242. once it's out of the system flip don't

  243. put it back in on Sunday that's the be

  244. my hot tip if you're doing the caffeine

  245. the first week is the hardest don't go

  246. back in on Sunday or you'll be

  247. withdrawing again on Monday so uh true

  248. story true story but I will say uh I um

  249. I I think uh one time uh part of my link

  250. was uh giving up Coke Zero FY drink and

  251. so but I really enjoyed then Sunday

  252. afternoon getting home from church

  253. having a nice glass of Coke uh and it

  254. was like one cup but that was just kind

  255. of like ah this is uh it was almost

  256. added to the lint experience like the

  257. six days of um that makes me sound like

  258. a real addict but six days of not having

  259. it and then on the seventh day you've

  260. gone to church you've worshiped you come

  261. home you enjoy it and then uh you

  262. continue on with your fast and um so

  263. yeah it's just interesting there's no

  264. hard and fast rules about that I would

  265. say yeah often people do fast right

  266. through but that might give a little bit

  267. of understanding as well where the 40

  268. days comes from because it's slightly

  269. more than 40 days because that allowed

  270. Sundays to be um a break day so to speak

  271. and and you really you highlight a

  272. really good point the the the purpose of

  273. fasting before Easter is that is to walk

  274. walk through and journey through a

  275. Wilderness like experience and know that

  276. God's present and to to pray and to to

  277. give those kind of things but it also

  278. sets up for that transition into

  279. Resurrection Life and celebration so

  280. even in that mini enjoyment of a Coke

  281. Zero after church on a Sunday feeling

  282. like a contrast to what has gone before

  283. the idea of lint is that as we journey

  284. through our 40 days of lint it's

  285. actually preparing us for the

  286. celebration of Resurrection Life that

  287. when Sunday rolls around it's like woo

  288. Easter Sunday he's risen from the dead

  289. and it really is a celebration uh one of

  290. the things I encourage people practicing

  291. link is to think about uh uh the meal

  292. they have on Christmas day so Christmas

  293. is a feast day within the lurgical

  294. calendar as we celebrate uh the birth of

  295. Christ and most families most people go

  296. out of their way to make sure the

  297. Christmas meal is something of a feast

  298. day well the invitation is to do the

  299. same thing on Easter Sunday that our

  300. Sunday lunch or Sunday dinner on Easter

  301. Sunday is a feast day have a celebratory

  302. meal that celebrates that Christ has

  303. risen from the dead and so if you've

  304. been fasting for 40 days but you're

  305. counting down to Resurrection Sunday New

  306. Life new beginnings and this kind of

  307. feast that you're going to share with

  308. friends or family or whatever well man

  309. it really helps to it really helps to

  310. kind of well engage in the season and be

  311. present to The Wonder of Christ's

  312. resurrection and the resurrection work

  313. of Christ in our lives and the he and

  314. them that's awesome so obviously lint

  315. has that historical perspective you know

  316. we're walking in the tradition of the

  317. faith um and a good sense I think what

  318. about what do you think particularly for

  319. 21st century um and Us in this Western

  320. context uh why is link powerful for us

  321. here today in this cultural context yeah

  322. great question I look in our in our 21st

  323. Western continent in living in to what

  324. do we live for or what or what do we

  325. orientate our lives or what are our

  326. goals well we live in a world of instant

  327. uh straightway uh no delay gratification

  328. excess abundance fruitfulness like we

  329. want it all and we want it now we very

  330. much live in a in a cultural context

  331. that is trying to accumulate more hold

  332. on to more collect more uh and you know

  333. as quickly as possible well lent

  334. interrupts that and reminds us in the

  335. words of Christ in the the Wilderness

  336. when he's tempted to to turn the stone

  337. into bread it it interrupts that and

  338. reminds us that uh we don't live by

  339. bread alone but by every word that

  340. proceeds from the mouth of God so lent

  341. is this 40-day uh

  342. Interruption essentially to you know our

  343. Western kind of Lifestyles tend to be

  344. ones of instant gratification and O

  345. overindulgence generally so lent

  346. interrupts that and says hey hey hey no

  347. no we man doesn't live by bread alone

  348. but every word that proceeds from the

  349. mouth of God you've got to you there's

  350. there's there's an invitation to slow

  351. down there's an invitation to be still

  352. there's an invitation to fast and to

  353. reorientate The rhythms of those 40 days

  354. in the Life of Christ it's very common

  355. for people to use a lent and devotional

  356. so the journey through the those 40 days

  357. of lent with a with a a basic devotional

  358. that might have some scripture reading

  359. and whoever put it together might have

  360. you know offer some thoughtful uh some

  361. thoughtful um or the invitation to some

  362. engagement regarding some thoughts of of

  363. prayer and repentance and fasting so

  364. it's this it's this real invitation to

  365. interrupt 21st century excess abundance

  366. you know we want it all we want it now

  367. say hey hey whoa whoa slow down true

  368. life is found in the words of Christ

  369. true life is found in the Life of Christ

  370. it's not found in taking off the nexts

  371. goal the next achievement the next

  372. purchase but rather in the the person of

  373. Jesus who gave his life for us so I

  374. think lint is very timely in

  375. interrupting those kinds of rhythms and

  376. inviting deeper Reflections I've been

  377. practicing lint for a long time now 15

  378. 16 17 years I I find that as we get

  379. closer to lent if I'm just if I just sit

  380. and be still for a moment my body is

  381. kind of telling me hey hey too much you

  382. know not enough sleep or too much

  383. scrolling on news apps or too much sugar

  384. or too much caffeine or too much you

  385. know this that or the other thing hey

  386. why don't you take a season out why

  387. don't you lay that down and just and

  388. make sure that in this next 40 days you

  389. you're listening to The Whisper Of

  390. Heaven and I think that's a fantastic

  391. Interruption to 21st century culture

  392. that is fast in instant and go go go

  393. very over stimulated uh you know our

  394. phones are these you know Weapons of

  395. Mass distraction and uh you know so

  396. we're constantly scrolling or binging or

  397. watching well lent interrupts that and

  398. puts that aside and says hey be still

  399. and know that God's God and and remember

  400. that we live not by bre alone but every

  401. word that proceeds from the mouth of God

  402. so I think it's a it's a healthy

  403. counterintuitive Interruption to what we

  404. think of as normal life but normal is

  405. whatever we actually design H wow I

  406. think of Paul's words you know where he

  407. said um everything is permissible for me

  408. but I don't want to be Mastered by

  409. anything and I think you know often we

  410. actually pause and go wow I actually

  411. have some acceptable cultural things

  412. that are actually mastering me and

  413. they're actually permissible they're

  414. enjoyable they're not bad but if I don't

  415. have some way of actually um not

  416. allowing them to master me then and so I

  417. think Link's a really good init to that

  418. it's like man there's this thing that's

  419. permissible we're not saying it's wrong

  420. but it's actually like link gives me an

  421. opportunity that maybe it just comes

  422. back into Its Right Place totally 100% I

  423. I think I think that's absolutely spot

  424. on that's how that's one of the major uh

  425. invitations of Lent that I would say we

  426. just like I said it's not bad but we are

  427. addicted to scrolling we're over

  428. caffinated we're overstimulated we're

  429. not sleeping enough or whatever it might

  430. be it's just life it's not bad or it's

  431. or it's not wrong but if you just sit

  432. and be still you realize oh there might

  433. be new life to be found if I could find

  434. some different different rhythms I know

  435. for one year I gave up news apps and

  436. scrolling for all of length um I didn't

  437. pick it back up afterwards and I'm

  438. better for it and yeah I think it's a

  439. healthy invitation yeah I think uh

  440. YouTube uh is on my list this year and

  441. uh I'm a little bit ashamed to admit

  442. what a struggle that's going to be you

  443. know just uh but to actually just uh and

  444. so I kind of have this Jewel thing where

  445. I'm really looking forward to it and

  446. also kind of going man I'm going to

  447. realize actually how much addiction is

  448. there and so um people ask what should I

  449. fast for lint and I often say oh you

  450. know if you if you if you have finish

  451. this question I could never live without

  452. like that's the whatever the answer to

  453. that question is like I could never live

  454. without my morning coffee it's like oh

  455. could you

  456. why don't she give up your morning

  457. coffee for you know I can never live

  458. without my Netflix programs I could

  459. never live without um you know I always

  460. have to a sweet treat and dessert it's

  461. like well instead of we're acknowledging

  462. there's these things I and we don't

  463. literally mean it yes but there is a

  464. sense of Truth to the fact that oh no

  465. that's I wouldn't want to that's I'm

  466. kind of dependent on that that that

  467. frames up it's like oh why don't you

  468. undo that for 40 days and discover that

  469. he can live without it and yeah it's a

  470. healthy challenge I think you've just

  471. triggered uh uh the dozens of people

  472. watching this with the mention of not

  473. having their caffeine but one of the

  474. things that was interesting in my

  475. journey in not doing caffeine is I I

  476. felt like um I came back with a far

  477. healthier relationship to it what I

  478. realized was there were times where I

  479. was having coffees without even enjoying

  480. it thinking about it it was just being

  481. dropped down the hatch um and and moving

  482. on to the next thing and so lent

  483. actually meant hey when I came out of

  484. lint went back to coffee but it had a

  485. far I actually enjoyed it more it was

  486. actually uh a pleasure rather than this

  487. thing that was just being consumed

  488. without being thought of so what's

  489. interesting is sometimes I think you

  490. actually find from the journey on the

  491. other side you actually enjoy the thing

  492. more and not because it means you go

  493. back to binging but it actually holds a

  494. healthy place that uh you actually taste

  495. the coffee rather than let it just drop

  496. down your throat without thinking about

  497. it absolutely absolutely I where our

  498. 21st century culture is such a consumer

  499. oriented culture but if we can break

  500. that cycle there is an invitation to be

  501. more of a connoisseur rather than a

  502. consumer and a connoisseur is somebody

  503. that appreciates the Wonder and the

  504. beauty and the

  505. intentionality uh that went into

  506. whatever it might be the meal or the

  507. painting or the you know so there's a

  508. greater sense of this life is a gift

  509. this coffee is a gift somebody you know

  510. there's a greater sense of of

  511. appreciation and when we appreciate

  512. something we don't take it for granted

  513. we don't just you know Down the Hatch

  514. and forget but we are more present to

  515. the moment and you're right it

  516. reorientates our relationship and I

  517. think that's really helping that's so

  518. good so for a lot of Pentecostals we

  519. would be more familiar with like 40 days

  520. of prayer and fasting like that's often

  521. something that we've done as a church or

  522. or within Church culture and it's

  523. obviously a great thing to do um how

  524. would you describe maybe the different

  525. and emphasis of Lent versus your

  526. traditional uh Pentecostal Church 40

  527. days of prayer and fasting and that's

  528. not say that the 40 days of prayer and

  529. fasting is wrong I think we both agree

  530. that's a great thing to do but it's not

  531. identical to lent there is a slight

  532. slight difference perhaps in the way

  533. that as Pentecostals we do it could be

  534. identical Le but it often didn't feel

  535. the same I've not asked you that

  536. question in advance but I wonder a good

  537. um something you you had some thoughts

  538. on yeah I I I think there's way more

  539. overlap than what there is lack of

  540. overlap so I think they're very similar

  541. maybe the maybe the one well maybe the

  542. slight Nuance that I'd put on it would

  543. be that traditional kind of Pentecostal

  544. 40 days of prayer and fasting it's often

  545. done with the hope of achieving or

  546. attaining or getting so it's the sense

  547. of um I would like this one of of the

  548. ways that maybe I can get this is that

  549. if I pray and fast and really strive for

  550. 40 days and God will see how serious I

  551. am and and we'll get there and there's

  552. we need some deeper thinking about

  553. there's some subtlety and some Nuance

  554. around a measure of Truth in that

  555. there's a measure of Truth to that but

  556. we also have to be careful with how how

  557. we Steward that abolutely so whereas I

  558. think the invitation of Lent is is it's

  559. not something that we're doing to attain

  560. it's something that we're doing in resp

  561. response of so it's it's in recognition

  562. of it's in recognition so I see lent is

  563. kind of a training ground for trials and

  564. tribulations in life it doesn't matter

  565. what we do trials and tribulations in

  566. life are going to come at some stage or

  567. another Well lent is just 40 days each

  568. year where we get to um voluntarily sign

  569. up for some sort of trial and

  570. tribulation now I I you know that's a

  571. very subjective way of describing

  572. somebody you're going without coffee for

  573. 40 days and you call that a trial andul

  574. no nevertheless though it is a season

  575. where we're choosing to lay down our

  576. lives in some way shape or form knowing

  577. that God meets Us in that places and is

  578. present to us in the in those places

  579. then what happens is a long life's

  580. journey something does go wrong that is

  581. you know there's grief there's loss

  582. there's heartache there's pain uh you

  583. know there's these realities that we

  584. navigate but suddenly the feeling is

  585. like ah I know how to do this I've done

  586. L for the last 12 years I know what it

  587. is to is I know what it is to be in a

  588. season of prayer a season of fasting a

  589. season of um of laying down my life in

  590. that moment I chose to do it in this

  591. moment circumstances have laid it upon

  592. me but it's an invitation to practice

  593. The rhythms that we would be hoping

  594. would bubble to the surface in the mid

  595. in the what do you want to Bubble to the

  596. surface in the midst of heartache and

  597. pain and tri and grief well you hope

  598. disciplines of prayer disciplines of

  599. attentiveness you're not going to be

  600. feasting and celebrating and heartache

  601. and loss but you're going to be learning

  602. that God's present to us in this season

  603. God walks alongside Us in this season

  604. well we get to practice that in Lent by

  605. choice for those other moments of Our

  606. Lives where we find ourselves in a

  607. Wilderness but maybe it's not one that

  608. we signed up for uh and I so I think

  609. there's there's a sense in which 40 days

  610. in prayer and fasting in the Pentecostal

  611. sense is often a a signing up to go

  612. somewhere get something do something

  613. whereas ly is more of a signing up to

  614. lay down my life and to and to be still

  615. and it's a Letting Go rather than a

  616. striving for and that would be it's so

  617. they're similar but that would be my

  618. subtle probably difference then yeah I

  619. like that and I like the thought you

  620. know uh rather than obtaining it's maybe

  621. becoming like so it's actually you know

  622. rather than something external I'm

  623. hoping for God to do for me I'm actually

  624. becoming and I love the idea that you

  625. had there about link sitting up for

  626. other seasons and one of the other ways

  627. I think that happens is uh sometimes you

  628. can then face a trial and you can

  629. actually be aware oh I know this

  630. particular Vice isn't going to be

  631. helpful for me in this season very good

  632. and so you're actually able to you've

  633. got this history where you go man when I

  634. strip that out of my life I just heard

  635. God that little bit clearer and again

  636. that's uh total optional you know that's

  637. just something that you self diagnose

  638. and go hey maybe in this season of trial

  639. actually watching Netflix isn't going to

  640. help me as I'm processing these emotions

  641. so I've got that history of length that

  642. I can lean into something and say man

  643. maybe for these three weeks while I'm

  644. processing this uh difficult season I

  645. can actually uh remove something that I

  646. know is just going to make me that

  647. little bit more attentive to God so it's

  648. actually it is training us for those

  649. Seasons I I think that's absolutely

  650. brilliant we do humans do have a

  651. tendency to exacerbate or or make the

  652. hard that much worse by responding to it

  653. in bad way I mean a classic example

  654. would be alcohol would be very that's

  655. just a common example often in trials

  656. and tribulations and hard times people

  657. respond um inappropriately and dip into

  658. the bottle in a way that it's probably

  659. not going to help in that situation lent

  660. you choose to fast give up alcohol those

  661. kinds of things hey it sets up healthier

  662. boundaries uh sugar oh it's a tough day

  663. I'm going to binge the cakes it's like L

  664. yeah I think you're spot on I think it

  665. is it's really true again it's the

  666. permissible things that can you know if

  667. they're not managed in a healthy way

  668. actually become vicces rather than

  669. rather yeah and so uh as a church you

  670. guys have done this for how many years

  671. oh at St luks we've done it since day

  672. one which is about 15 15 years 15 years

  673. wow and so how's that been for you as a

  674. church Community um just having that

  675. Rhythm that that time of year how would

  676. you feel it's it's formed you guys as a

  677. church

  678. sure I I think I think when it comes to

  679. the life of the church particularly

  680. coming from Pentecostal background and a

  681. Pentecostal church we do tend to string

  682. together in our calendar uh High Point

  683. to High Point to High Point so the the

  684. conference will lead to the camp will

  685. lead to the guest speaker will lead to

  686. you know whatever it might be we do like

  687. to string together the next thing to

  688. look forward to which is fantastic and I

  689. I think we should all have something on

  690. our calendar that we're looking forward

  691. to that's a really healthy thing to do

  692. but the way life works is that there are

  693. mountain Toops but there's also valleys

  694. uh so by celebrating lent or or

  695. participating in the season of Lent

  696. every year it invites us as a church to

  697. not only orientate around High Point to

  698. High Point to High Point but also to

  699. recognize that at times there's some

  700. Valley experiences which then becomes an

  701. invitation within the context of our

  702. Sunday services to address some topics

  703. that are really important to address but

  704. maybe not everybody wants to tackle or

  705. it's not as exciting uh you know people

  706. will be more excited about a SE a series

  707. on how to be an overcomer than a series

  708. on the nature of sin in our lives and

  709. how we deal with it like to do that that

  710. sounds depressing so you know as a

  711. church Community we've been able to over

  712. 15 years explore variety of different

  713. topics that are appropriate to the

  714. season of lint we've done series on

  715. prayer fasting giving um obviously ties

  716. into live that's our series uh oh there

  717. go the secret life there you go plug for

  718. that great series don't miss it uh we've

  719. done other series uh we did a series

  720. called waiting through MTH and we

  721. interviewed people each of the Sundays

  722. of Lent who had navigated trials and

  723. tribulations uh somebody that had

  724. navigated separation somebody that had

  725. lost a loved one to cancer somebody that

  726. uh had you know just different you know

  727. the real realities of what we face and

  728. we've been able to interview them where

  729. was Christ in that moment what did you

  730. learn in that season so that was just a

  731. chance to kind of dip into you know this

  732. where do you where do you put your six

  733. we series on the reality of heartache

  734. and pain well lent's an invitation to

  735. acknowledge that and again not because

  736. they're not they're topics that we

  737. should be confident to tackle knowing

  738. that Christ is present in all of those

  739. Seasons but sometimes where there's

  740. sometimes we're a little bit more

  741. uncomfortable to do that and so yeah

  742. it's certainly been a chance to uh you

  743. know navigate those kinds of topics

  744. we've looked at depression anxiety you

  745. know other other realities of mental

  746. health during the season of Lent and I

  747. found that that's opened up

  748. conversations afterwards for people to

  749. go oh I've kind of tucked that away in

  750. the background for a long time but by

  751. bringing it into the open it gives us a

  752. chance to talk about it to seek God's

  753. wisdom in relation to how to Journey

  754. with anxiety uh where might Christ be in

  755. this and so yeah it's certainly it's an

  756. invitation to a far rounder or far a

  757. more

  758. formed uh idea of discipleship than just

  759. maybe our favorite topics that we like

  760. to hit again and again yeah awesome so

  761. what would be your encouragement um

  762. obviously there'll be people watching

  763. this that have heard of length a little

  764. bit y kind of know it as a bit of a

  765. topic they've got a we bit more

  766. understanding now what would be your

  767. encouragement to them it's their first

  768. year of Lent they're thinking look do I

  769. want to do this what would be U your

  770. encouragement I mean I'm assuming you're

  771. going to encourage want to do it be

  772. Conor how would you frame up for them to

  773. approach this Lent season a few things

  774. we we already mentioned a couple of them

  775. but we will all go through lent and

  776. Seasons whether we want to or not

  777. seasons of being in the wilderness so in

  778. light of that we may as well practice

  779. that in some way shapeable form and the

  780. invitation of uh the spiritual

  781. discipline of fasting and aligning that

  782. with L is to is to practice that so I'd

  783. encourage people like you're going to go

  784. through a Wilderness why not practice

  785. going through a Wilderness how do we

  786. practice going through it well it's 40

  787. days it's a countdown to Resurrection

  788. Life the great hope that we have in

  789. Christ so you know it's a it's a it's a

  790. framed up beginning and end so it's not

  791. you know it's not going to go I have to

  792. give up sugar forever it's like no no

  793. this a 40-day I I encourage people to

  794. think about well what just sit and be

  795. still and where might you be over

  796. stimulated or overindulging or over

  797. caffeinated or and and what could you

  798. maybe lay down i' encourage people to

  799. think about what they could give up for

  800. Lent uh and then I encourage people to

  801. think about what they could take up for

  802. Lent and so uh often for me the taking

  803. of something up for Lent is is in the

  804. form of a devotional and some prayer so

  805. for Lent I'm going to be in this

  806. devotional there's a a reading every day

  807. for 40 days I'm going to read and then

  808. I'm going to spend some time in prayer

  809. and so there's the letting go of

  810. something and the taking up of something

  811. I'd encourage people to think about

  812. where can they get a lent in devotional

  813. you can get them on Amazon you can

  814. download the Kindles you might be

  815. providing them as a church I'm not sure

  816. but there's lots of lots of resources

  817. there so what can I lay down what can I

  818. take up I'm going to journey through the

  819. Wilderness but but Christ Journey

  820. Through the Wilderness and modeled to us

  821. what it is to keep our faith in God and

  822. to be conscious that God's present to us

  823. in all of those Seasons so I'd encourage

  824. that I'd also encourage it's not a

  825. depressing season it's not it's not

  826. intended to be um well that was

  827. depressing it's like no it's the

  828. contrast between Resurrection Life and

  829. the realities of life when it doesn't

  830. feel like a resurrection moment uh as I

  831. as I said before when we string High

  832. Point to High Point together it can feel

  833. like like Well church is always amazing

  834. because we go from one great thing to

  835. another great thing but my life actually

  836. doesn't feel like that my life doesn't

  837. always go from one amazing thing to

  838. another amazing like nobody's life goes

  839. from one amazing thing to another

  840. amazing thing so link gives you a chance

  841. to acknowledge that but it's not

  842. depressing it's it's the it's it's the

  843. wonder that God's present to us and the

  844. Delight that God's present to us in all

  845. season so it's not something to um to

  846. see as being heavy

  847. or um or strict or like punishing for 40

  848. days no it's an invitation to certainly

  849. some disciplines but disciplines are

  850. disciplines are healthy they they

  851. they're good for us so you in your mind

  852. frame it as an invitation to Journey

  853. with Christ Into the Wilderness spaces

  854. knowing that Christ is present take lay

  855. something down and take something and I

  856. think it it's also helpful to remember

  857. particularly in the initial stages it

  858. can actually be really hard and that's

  859. okay like because sometimes we have this

  860. picture like yes I'll lay it down but

  861. straight away there's going to be this

  862. peace and this and uh I've found some

  863. seasons of Lent I seem to have a real

  864. deep connection with God in a way that

  865. seems unique to that lent season I find

  866. others feel far more like disciplined

  867. get to the end of it and go I I survived

  868. it I enjoyed it uh I don't have that

  869. mindset that that's how it has to be but

  870. I also think it's good for people to be

  871. aware hey if it's a tough length Season

  872. for you laying something down that's

  873. still of great value for you and that's

  874. um you know it doesn't have to be

  875. depressive but also if it's not Mountain

  876. Top to Mountain Top that's okay it's

  877. okay for it to be a struggle because I

  878. think some people can go into the season

  879. thinking oh this will be um you know yes

  880. I'm laying something down but oh what

  881. Fellowship I'm going to have and I think

  882. that does happen but it can also um you

  883. know the desert was a desert as well

  884. absolutely absolutely it can be and both

  885. in everything I think that's really

  886. that's really wise advice I mean you

  887. think about running as a as a discipline

  888. some runs you go on you get home and

  889. you're exhausted but it was a joy and a

  890. delight and you ran around the mountain

  891. and the Sun was shining you feel good

  892. kind I runs are a chore and hard work

  893. and um you get home exhausted and it's

  894. like I don't even want to run again yet

  895. it it it's good for you irrespective of

  896. the emotional or the the feelings that

  897. went with it lent is healthy and good

  898. for us irrespective of whether it feels

  899. wonderful or difficult if we are if

  900. you're fasting if you're laying

  901. something down like that doesn't feel

  902. great uh the whole time and especially

  903. like you said in those if you're giving

  904. up coffee those first five six days can

  905. be tough and you have headaches and you

  906. think this is just making my life worse

  907. not better but it's that sense in that

  908. lent is not it's not

  909. about pragmatics it's not about it's not

  910. a tool in our tool belt that we pull out

  911. to achieve like you before attaining

  912. it's it's it's a discipline that helps

  913. us to become and the becoming of want to

  914. run a marathon so you want to become a

  915. marathon runner well the discipline of

  916. training to become a marathon runner is

  917. not always fun and easy but really

  918. worthwhile and really like lifegiving

  919. yeah uh the discipline of becoming like

  920. Christ is to take up our cross and to

  921. lay down our lives and we get to

  922. practice that in length not always

  923. exciting not always easy but very good

  924. for us and healthy for us so yeah you

  925. you that's wise words it will feel at

  926. times like a struggle and challenging

  927. and difficult and you get to day 27 and

  928. you're like how many more days of not

  929. having a Cofe are there it's like it

  930. feels like it's never ending absolutely

  931. that that's what fasting feels like and

  932. yet it is healthy for us in that kind of

  933. counterintuitive way to our 21st century

  934. conscious that always wants things to be

  935. easy and quick and fast yeah you bring

  936. up running but you know scripture does

  937. say you know is it a fool runs when no

  938. one chases him so you know I'm not I'm

  939. not necessarily on the running uh hey

  940. but an analogy but uh I think it's uh

  941. the other thing is to have those those

  942. can be moments of worship for us right

  943. Lord I'm really struggling in this

  944. moment y um you know this is I want to

  945. be closer to you and uh it's not a

  946. transaction but it's just a hard thing

  947. that we can say in that moment hey you

  948. know this is an offering to you and it's

  949. actually remembering that wow that can

  950. be an offering to Jesus and that's

  951. something beautiful that we can give him

  952. I'm wondering if you just want to pray

  953. for us church for those who are going to

  954. be going through length for the first

  955. time for grace and you know that there

  956. would be that sense of of him with us

  957. absolutely it's a delight thanks for

  958. your

  959. time lord we

  960. uh we're mindful that you walked through

  961. the

  962. wildness you you you navigated the

  963. desert for 40 days and it was not easy

  964. for you and yet that was a part of your

  965. formation it was a part of your journey

  966. and being and becoming and doing that

  967. which has ultimately brought us

  968. salvation and life and fullness of love

  969. and we remember your words that man

  970. doesn't live by bread alone but every

  971. word that proceeds from the mouth of God

  972. so as uh El T engages in Lent engages in

  973. that walk through the Wilderness and in

  974. in a season of prayer and a season of

  975. fasting and a season of giving I just

  976. pray that they would know that comfort

  977. of the Holy Spirit they know the guiding

  978. of the Holy Spirit they know the

  979. presence of the holy spirit in the

  980. delightful moments but also in the

  981. difficult and trying moments and that

  982. ultimately it would be an invitation to

  983. a season of growth and a season of

  984. development and a season of refinement

  985. uh a season of being and becoming the

  986. holy whole and wholesome people that

  987. we're called to be in Christ and we

  988. acknowledge that that doesn't always

  989. come about via that which is easy and

  990. fun and exciting sometimes it comes

  991. about by that which is a discipline and

  992. a commitment and a laying down of our

  993. lives and we acknowledge that and we

  994. look to your example in laying your life

  995. down for us and in Lent we practice that

  996. and in doing so we count down to the

  997. fullness of life that comes on Easter

  998. Sunday on Resurrection Sunday and so we

  999. may we be mindful of that as we journey

1000. through length that we are counting down

1001. to Resurrection Life but the only way to

1002. find that Resurrection life is to go

1003. through the valley of the shadow of
