  1. hey welcome to the second episode of our

  2. introducing lent podcast where I sit

  3. down for a conversation with Andrew

  4. kilick you'll notice at one point we get

  5. interrupted by an alarm and we chose to

  6. leave this in because we actually feel

  7. it adds value to the conversation so

  8. here it is hope you enjoyed the

  9. podcast hey Cura church family are so

  10. excited to kick off our second podcast

  11. introducing lent and today I'm joining

  12. by none other than Andrew kilick who has

  13. been a friend of mine for 20 years and

  14. also has a uh history with our church

  15. and currently uh I think sometimes

  16. anyway watches online because uh he's

  17. based north of ky ky where are you from

  18. Andrew uh yeah just north of Ky Cassi at

  19. a little in a little settlement called

  20. orar Point um just up by Toro and coding

  21. point if you're familiar with that area

  22. so yeah loving the dream out there by

  23. the water it's good very cool and uh

  24. your family situation y just Anna and I

  25. um and our little home yeah an has had

  26. chronic fatigue for the duration of our

  27. marriage so it's just us as a as a tight

  28. unit um with a few health challenges and

  29. stuff but yeah that's um it's been a

  30. journey but but yeah it's been good as

  31. well and in terms of work you're in the

  32. publishing field do you want to share a

  33. little bit about what you do yes um I've

  34. been involved with publishing um since

  35. coming out of University which is now uh

  36. it'll be 25 years this year so time

  37. flies um yeah I work for a company

  38. called Castle publishing which is a we

  39. specialize and and Publishing Christian

  40. books so working alongside a lot of of

  41. New Zealand Christian people and helping

  42. them put their books together yeah very

  43. cool well as I said Andrew is a good

  44. friend but uh I wanted to bring him on

  45. the podcast really uh because of uh some

  46. of the richness and insight that he uh

  47. does bring around contemplative

  48. practices contemplative as I should say

  49. um uh try and get the pronunciation

  50. right um but wanted to bring them on and

  51. really just discuss what are some other

  52. things that we could add into our lint

  53. journey and uh you know how can we make

  54. this season really rich so it's not

  55. simply just about giving something up

  56. but it's actually a rich season of what

  57. we're pursuing as well but before we get

  58. into some of that do you maybe just want

  59. to share how long have you been doing

  60. lint what's kind of your experience of

  61. doing lint Bean like and uh maybe a

  62. little bit of your history there okay

  63. yeah um I think I I think I've been

  64. doing some sort of lint practice each

  65. year for maybe about 10 years um it's

  66. not something I grew up with I grew up

  67. in um Presbyterian in a Presbyterian

  68. church and we I wasn't aware of Lent

  69. um over time I started to become a bit

  70. more aware of it as I started sort of

  71. started looking looking into church

  72. history and different Church forms and

  73. stuff a bit more um and then I started

  74. um going to the church um where Joseph

  75. mccol is the pastor St Luke's um Joseph

  76. um being one of the other guys on this

  77. little podcast series um and yeah he he

  78. was encouraging his his church to give

  79. it a go so I think I think that was

  80. probably about 10 years ago

  81. um

  82. and yeah I I've done probably done

  83. something different each year I haven't

  84. got a set thing that I do every year and

  85. for me like this is not necessarily in

  86. the tradition of Lent but I tend to see

  87. it as um sort of an opportunity to

  88. experiment a little bit um experiment

  89. with different um prayer

  90. practices um and different Frameworks

  91. and and

  92. well sometimes they're called spiritual

  93. disciplines that sort of thing um and

  94. and use lint as a sort of an intentional

  95. time of that sort of 40-day period of of

  96. um yeah trying out some some different

  97. things that might help me to flourish as

  98. a person and and grow closer to God and

  99. so what's been your experience over

  100. those 10 years like uh is it have

  101. sometimes been hard has sometimes been

  102. an amazing season like what have kind of

  103. been the varied experiences that you've

  104. had yeah I mean I've I've always quite

  105. enjoyed it I haven't done heaps of

  106. things that were about self-denial right

  107. um I haven't done you know massive fasts

  108. or anything like that I've I've tended

  109. to um to more focus on on prayer

  110. exercises um one year for example I I

  111. prayed the what's called The Daily

  112. Office which is is you're praying four

  113. times a day at set times and you're

  114. you're praying particular prayers and

  115. the prayers that you're you're praying

  116. are being prayed by people all around

  117. the world they're they're sort of part

  118. of you know they they're established

  119. prayers within the body of Christ and

  120. and you and so for that you're praying

  121. when you wake up um you're praying at

  122. sort of around midday 12:30ish then

  123. you're praying again at the end of the

  124. working day so around 5:30 and then you

  125. pray again before bedtime so there's

  126. these these four set periods of prayer

  127. and i s for that I simply um set a timer

  128. on my cell phone um so so so that that's

  129. a discipline and that's not necessarily

  130. fun and easy um but it's not not quite

  131. the same thing as you know fasting you

  132. know during daylight hours or something

  133. like that um and and you although that

  134. has been a challenge at time my

  135. experience of Lent has been has been

  136. largely positive and I've found been

  137. grateful for for trying out some of

  138. those different things and and

  139. experiencing experiencing what that

  140. might be like yeah awesome and our third

  141. podcast is actually with Kristen

  142. Williams specifically about self-denial

  143. so we uh will uh be uh digging into that

  144. with him which is why brought you on to

  145. maybe talk about what kind of things we

  146. could uh add in and what are some ideas

  147. of ways that we can um encounter Jesus

  148. because we do believe self denial is an

  149. important part of lint but it's not the

  150. only part of lint right like it's not

  151. just a season where if all we did was

  152. give something up for 40 days and

  153. literally that was our whole experience

  154. well I went for 40 days without coffee

  155. or Netflix or whatever um it's probably

  156. not likely to be a profound time right

  157. um it would simply be okay well that it

  158. may or may not be but it probably

  159. wouldn't be spiritually transforming

  160. like perhaps um the invitation is and so

  161. uh just Keen to explore what uh some of

  162. those other things that we can

  163. potentially add in during this season to

  164. um to enrich our lent experience yeah I

  165. I think um whether you're giving

  166. something up or adding something in and

  167. sometimes there's a crossover between

  168. those things because when you give

  169. something up you're often often creating

  170. space with something else right so um

  171. and in terms of just you know to talk a

  172. bit more about the giving up thing

  173. ultimately as I said anyway what and

  174. giving something ultimately what you're

  175. wanting to do is create space for god um

  176. you know I mean to put it in sort of

  177. more you know maybe more full-on

  178. terms you might want to give up

  179. something which has become an idol in

  180. your life you know and that's quite a

  181. full-on way of putting it but certain

  182. things clutter our lives and so the idea

  183. in giving them up is that you're

  184. creating space for God but in creating

  185. space you may find that you're you're

  186. adding something so even at that level

  187. sing up you might find that you're

  188. actually receiving something because

  189. you've opened up a space so you know for

  190. example if if you if if so an additive

  191. thing might depending on how you view

  192. this this is either an additive thing or

  193. a subtractive thing you might decide

  194. that for the period of Lent you're going

  195. to make sure you get earlier nights

  196. right yes you're going to you're going

  197. to get make sure you're in bed by 9:30

  198. or something because you know that there

  199. might be a little bit of dysfunction in

  200. your life around that sort of thing and

  201. so in a way that's giving something up

  202. because that might mean you now can't

  203. watch Netflix until 10:30 30 so that's

  204. you're giving something up but you're

  205. also feeding yourself because now you're

  206. potentially sleeping in a more healthy

  207. way and as you start to become more

  208. healthy in that way then you'll begin

  209. potentially begin to reap those

  210. benefits yeah yeah I I for I I think

  211. that that's there is overlap there and I

  212. also think it's important no matter what

  213. you're giving up or what you're

  214. adding to bring God into that context so

  215. it's not just about giving up coffee per

  216. se it's about in giving up

  217. coffee how's God involved with this what

  218. what if I'm giving up coffee what does

  219. this open me up to in terms of the way

  220. God can function in my life so I think

  221. no matter what people are

  222. doing you know you begin to it's it's

  223. ultimately hopefully going to be

  224. encounter with God because you're

  225. inviting him into whatever your practice

  226. is for Lent you're wanting to have space

  227. for God you're wanting God to be in that

  228. Dynamic yeah I remember the first uh

  229. lent practice that I did when I gave up

  230. coffee and um I went to the cafe with

  231. SAR and I ordered a cup of tea and they

  232. gave really small tea cups that you had

  233. to kind of hold and so I felt like Not

  234. only was I missing my caffeine I was

  235. also uh a bit of social stigma as my

  236. wife was laughing at me at uh drinking

  237. out of this uh you know with my finger

  238. out drinking a cup of tea in a cafe and

  239. so she enjoyed that anyway but I do like

  240. what you're saying and sometimes I think

  241. there can be something that is almost a

  242. natural replacement or uh so for example

  243. this year one of the things I'm going to

  244. fast from is actually watching YouTube

  245. now so I like watching NRL fantasy

  246. videos on YouTube and and uh analysis of

  247. the 2008 share market crash so I'm a

  248. really interesting guy so I'm going to

  249. uh you know put a pause on those and to

  250. be honest if I was to say hey I'm going

  251. to pause listening to those things and

  252. I'm going to introduce 45 minutes

  253. silence and Steed I would probably

  254. really struggle to do that right like it

  255. it it would be a uh maybe it's something

  256. that I could benefit from but to go hey

  257. any time that I'm spending on that I'm

  258. going to place with silence would

  259. probably set me up to fail and so one of

  260. the things that I I've actually got

  261. three audio books that I want to listen

  262. to that are Christian audio books around

  263. particular topics that I want to grow in

  264. my walk with Jesus in and so I'm going

  265. to replace the YouTube with listening to

  266. some audio boxs and then as a new

  267. practice I've been out of the habit of

  268. having my silence so I then want to

  269. integrate a bite-sized piece of Silence

  270. into my day as well so part of the

  271. removing YouTube is uh replacing it with

  272. an alternative that will help me welome

  273. my relationship with God and then a

  274. small part of it is actually removing

  275. noise from my life and creating a silent

  276. space but I think if I was just to say

  277. hey I'm going to remove this chunk and

  278. try and replace it all with silence that

  279. would probably mean I would really

  280. struggle during the lint season and so

  281. uh I've kind of um replacing with

  282. something that I already do but I'm

  283. going to do more of and then also

  284. replace it with something that's new to

  285. me and so I'm introducing that as a

  286. bite-size um kind of Chunk I don't know

  287. if that's if you kind of got any

  288. thoughts around that or yeah I I I think

  289. that sounds good um I mean on on the on

  290. the books thing obviously I pick up at

  291. that meeting I'm a big reader apart from

  292. working in publishing I'm a big reader

  293. and and my some years my um lent

  294. practice has been reading specific books

  295. so um for three length in a row I read

  296. some fairly sizable books on the

  297. crucifixion I wanted to know and and

  298. reading about the crucifixion during

  299. Lent that's appropriate because

  300. ultimately the lent season is the big

  301. buildup to to Easter right so um so

  302. that's what I wanted to do there um but

  303. yes also in terms of you know

  304. not not not trying not trying to overdo

  305. it um in terms of I I I think that the

  306. the the scripture that comes to mind for

  307. me is is where Jesus says

  308. um man was not made for the Sabbath but

  309. Sabbath for man yes you know that that

  310. God is God is constantly inviting us

  311. into um spaces of rest and and Jesus is

  312. talking about come unto me all you who

  313. are burdened and heavy laden I'll give

  314. you rest um and he's talking about take

  315. my yoke upon you he's not saying no yoke

  316. but he's saying his yoke is is easy and

  317. light and so we need to be challenged

  318. especially in the western world that we

  319. don't just take versus like that as an

  320. excuse to slack off but most of us are

  321. actually not slacking off and so um in

  322. stepping into lent you don't want to add

  323. a whole lot of burden to yourself that's

  324. just going to make the whole thing you

  325. know like a really yes press in yes put

  326. yourself outside your comfort zone but

  327. keep that balance of you know as you say

  328. not setting yourself up to fail by

  329. trying to cut everything and then do you

  330. know 10 10 hours of prayer a day or

  331. something like that so yeah I think I

  332. think that's good you you kind of and

  333. look during the 40 days if you find that

  334. you know if you started out with say 5

  335. minutes of science s during the 40 day

  336. like it might be your intention to over

  337. the 40 days slowly build that up you

  338. know rather than just going in hard and

  339. like a like going cold turkey yeah could

  340. actually have have an intentionality to

  341. to build so you know see how you going

  342. and build on on things as you go that's

  343. right and I like that idea of building

  344. because uh particularly if you're giving

  345. up something that's addictive the first

  346. period will be the hardest and so if

  347. you're also trying to put in something

  348. um new that can be doubly hard for

  349. example giving up coffee you know you're

  350. experiencing headaches you're

  351. experiencing withdrawal you know uh from

  352. caffeine there's various genuine uh

  353. things that you're experiencing and so

  354. to build into a new practice is really

  355. helpful because it means uh as my body

  356. is now used to not having caffeine I can

  357. increase some of those other practices

  358. far easier than in those first few days

  359. when it's a bit of a shock to the system

  360. and simply getting through the day feels

  361. like it's a uh an achievement and so I

  362. do like the idea about growing in that

  363. and so I know of I've mentioned already

  364. silence I know that's been a really

  365. transformative practice for you do you

  366. maybe want to share even a little bit

  367. around silence and what that's looked

  368. like uh in your life and how you

  369. discovered that as a practice and and

  370. yeah what what it's been

  371. like yeah um so I first started

  372. intentionally practicing silence around

  373. a time when I was struggling with

  374. burnout and for me that burnout the

  375. symptoms of burnout for me was large had

  376. had a large component of anxiety to it

  377. um and so I have to admit that when I

  378. first started getting interested in that

  379. space of of being intentional about

  380. having times of quiet and silence um it

  381. was in some ways a survival strategy wow

  382. because I just had you know so much

  383. going on and in some ways also just you

  384. know when I first started doing it it

  385. wasn't anything other than just a

  386. technique for trying to manage anxiety

  387. you know right um but as I began to

  388. investigate that space I I discovered

  389. that actually there's this whole

  390. Heritage and tradition within the

  391. Christian faith that is is you know um

  392. interested in in silence as a as a a a

  393. place to encounter God to encounter the

  394. Divine and I found that very exciting

  395. because that was dovetailing something

  396. that I actually did need I needed to to

  397. discover these spaces um to heal and to

  398. and even just to be okay at sometimes um

  399. and but then to discover that there was

  400. something in in the the Christian

  401. tradition that I'm that I am a part of a

  402. tradition which I have

  403. inherited um and that goes for all of us

  404. in the body of Christ you know we need

  405. to make sure we have this wider view of

  406. of church history and all that's

  407. available to us from 2,000 years of

  408. History it's not just us and the early

  409. church there's a whole you know there's

  410. a whole lot of resource and richness and

  411. treasure that we can we can partake of

  412. and so I I was excited to discover that

  413. there's this whole thing within

  414. Christianity that's suround um and um

  415. around encountering silence and and

  416. practicing silence so that so that was

  417. then the space that I really gravitated

  418. towards it it became not just a

  419. technique um for quietening myself in

  420. anxiety but actually um a place of

  421. Prayer

  422. we get there

  423. definitely that's okay that's an not

  424. call you need to take feel free it's my

  425. 12 it's my left my PR so we've just been

  426. interrupted by Andrew's alarm uh for

  427. silence is that right so uh right now

  428. it's going to be an awkward interview as

  429. Andrew goes around the link hasn't

  430. started yet no um yes so i' I've got an

  431. alarm that's still goes off on my phone

  432. every day at 12:30 which is a leftover

  433. that I've kept going from that lent when

  434. I I was doing set prayers four times a

  435. day W um and i' I've left it on because

  436. it is still a it's a practical thing at

  437. 12:30 I can suddenly think oh it's 12:30

  438. I should probably have some lunch things

  439. like that but it is still a reminder to

  440. just be like oh take a moment take a

  441. beat

  442. um and just re Cent essentially great

  443. and so in terms of the silence if we

  444. were to go really practical um for

  445. someone who maybe is feeling a little

  446. bit overwhelmed or even someone who just

  447. wants to develop that as part of their

  448. practice I mean I think we live in a

  449. world where we are absolutely bombarded

  450. that the ability to be silent in the

  451. presence of the Lord is something

  452. beautiful but what does that look like

  453. really tangibly so obviously you sit in

  454. silence uh what does it look like for

  455. you like obviously thoughts come uh

  456. different things come how do you do you

  457. have centering words do you try and pray

  458. in your mind do you try and not pray in

  459. your mind what does for you um I realize

  460. it's not rules but it's just saying hey

  461. for you how have you practically

  462. experienced that because I think

  463. sometimes we hear Hey it would be um you

  464. know we can have times of Silence with

  465. the Lord and which you don't always even

  466. know totally what that

  467. means yeah I mean one level it's just

  468. it's a very practical thing silence is

  469. silence so probably you're probably not

  470. well I was going to say you're probably

  471. not listening to music but for some

  472. people listening to quiet music could

  473. bring them into a place of Silence so

  474. yeah I don't want to be prescriptive

  475. because I think people sometimes will

  476. have a sense of what it

  477. is that brings them to a sense of

  478. Silence not necessarily a literal sense

  479. of Silence then sense of Silence um but

  480. but at one level it is simply about

  481. ceasing chatter ceasing you know

  482. eliminating as much noise as possible

  483. going into a common place um and

  484. so in terms of science being a method of

  485. prayer you are suspending the the

  486. talking aspect of it I'm not saying you

  487. should give up all talking to God

  488. because I still believe that talking to

  489. God is very important and hearing from

  490. God is very important but in that time

  491. of Silence you're actually the intention

  492. is that you're actually just going to be

  493. silent with the presence of God wow

  494. ultimately that's the intention the

  495. intention is that you in the presence of

  496. God or the spirit of God are simply sit

  497. sitting quietly

  498. together um so how how does that happen

  499. well some of it's out of our control h

  500. but in being intentional about wanting

  501. to be silent we can again it's about

  502. opening up space for the spirit to come

  503. into and so um there have been lots of

  504. different techniques um put forward by

  505. different people over the years um one

  506. is one that's often talked about as sort

  507. of being a good starting place is is

  508. what's called centering prayer and

  509. centering prayer the idea is is to

  510. Center yourself on the indwelling spirit

  511. within you like the holy spirit

  512. indwelling in you you're centering on

  513. that and the methodology for that is to

  514. have a prayer word for a lot of people

  515. that prayer word is

  516. Jesus and what happens is that you're

  517. aiming for your mind to be as quiet as

  518. possible um so that you're creating that

  519. space and so that when you notice your

  520. mind's drifting into something else or

  521. starting to chatter you say your prayer

  522. word so in this case you would say

  523. Jesus and go back to silence I mean we

  524. can kind of demonstrate it a little bit

  525. you you can maybe if you're watching

  526. this or listening to this you can maybe

  527. sense it that if if if Aaron and I sit

  528. quietly and then say

  529. Jesus you might actually be able to

  530. sense something as you're listening or

  531. watching that in the moments after we

  532. say the word Jesus there is a

  533. peacefulness and that and you're kind of

  534. that's what you're trying to kind of

  535. foster that moment after you say your

  536. prayer word where things get peaceful is

  537. kind of what you're trying to trying to

  538. Foster so it doesn't wouldn't have to be

  539. J that's very powerful for a lot of

  540. people um but you might say love you

  541. might say I mean for a time when I was

  542. practicing this my word was

  543. home because I just I I knew inside of

  544. me I had this deep all this this deep

  545. yearning for home I there was something

  546. inside my spirit inside my heart that

  547. was always longing for home so I thought

  548. I'll I'll tap into that and for a time I

  549. made my prayer word home and so as my

  550. mind starts to wander and I start to

  551. think about what I need to to it work

  552. today or even sometimes chatter about

  553. God stuff which can be productive but

  554. isn't necessarily appropriate at that

  555. moment um as that chatter starts to

  556. accumulate um you remind yourself of the

  557. space that you're in you say your prayer

  558. word you definitely don't beat yourself

  559. up over the fact that your mind started

  560. getting busy cuz that just creates a

  561. whole d

  562. of yeah guilt doesn't really uh Foster

  563. silence and and Solitude not helpful so

  564. you are compassionate with yourself um

  565. you go yeah this is wandering off is

  566. what brains do right yeah okay you have

  567. to be realistic about that but when you

  568. notice that your your brains wandered

  569. off um you s simply say your prayer word

  570. and notice the peace or the or that

  571. feeling of Stillness that comes in after

  572. that and as time goes by hopefully that

  573. Stillness and peacefulness starts to

  574. expand out into your experience of of

  575. the of the meditation you know like

  576. sometimes we going be weary of a word

  577. like meditation within Christian within

  578. the Christian world but we don't need to

  579. be the words in the Bible um you know

  580. Christians have practice you know

  581. meditating on the spirit and meditating

  582. on the word for Generations so yeah it

  583. can be a bit of a put for world but not

  584. not to worry

  585. um yeah if if if that's you know if it

  586. helps you to frame it like that or it

  587. doesn't help you to frame it like that

  588. that's all cool but in those times um th

  589. those moments of Silence are hopefully

  590. going to start to expand out in in in

  591. your Paran that you've side for sence

  592. yeah it's good don't worry I I hope

  593. people won't freak too much out about

  594. meditation I did use the word mystical

  595. in my sermon uh last Sunday so um you

  596. know that's probably almost one step up

  597. there in terms of triggering words but I

  598. think that's really helpful and and so

  599. you know as we think about this idea um

  600. of uh you know what you're adding I I do

  601. sometimes think it it it can tie in

  602. directly with uh that which you are

  603. sacrificing you know for example you

  604. know when I'm having less time with

  605. screens um silence is a great antidote

  606. where it's like okay hey part of my for

  607. time with screens is silence you know I

  608. don't want to keep going on about the

  609. coffee cuz I know for some people that

  610. might be triggering but you know uh on a

  611. very practical replacement sometimes

  612. it's like hey I realize three times a

  613. week I pay for a cup of coffee I might

  614. actually donate that money and so that's

  615. actually like a very practical um as a

  616. hey I'm going to give this to the poor

  617. or I'm going to uh you know give this to

  618. someone as an act of worship to God and

  619. so that's a something that would be

  620. practical that's um coming into our time

  621. of Lent where um obviously giving makes

  622. up um you know part of the practice of

  623. Lent as well so uh it doesn't always um

  624. have to be uh traditional or you know

  625. spiritual discipline in the way that we

  626. think of them uh PR a Bible reading it

  627. can also be things like giving right

  628. absolutely yeah yeah absolutely um I I

  629. think that I I hope that what would

  630. happen is that as people spend a bit of

  631. time thinking about what might what L

  632. might look like for them and to actually

  633. pray about it yeah I suspect that people

  634. will start something might pop into

  635. their mind about something which they've

  636. they've kind of known about whether it's

  637. a hunger to draw them into something

  638. else and Experiencing God in a different

  639. way or in a different mode that they're

  640. hungry for something or it's something

  641. which they know is kind

  642. of you know maybe something they enjoy

  643. but maybe it's holding them back a

  644. little bit like they've got a little bit

  645. sing of that I think that I think it

  646. would be really cool if people just took

  647. a bit of time to just maybe get an

  648. incling of what what L might look like

  649. for them if that's something to add in

  650. um then that's awesome if that's

  651. something to give up then that's awesome

  652. as well but to be open to there might be

  653. something

  654. in your heart which is is offering an

  655. invitation yeah you know like I'm not

  656. talking about I'm not talking about a

  657. hard task after God here at all there

  658. might be some invitation within your

  659. heart within your spirit that's saying

  660. what about this like a a little voice a

  661. still Small Voice that's saying you know

  662. how about how about silence or how about

  663. something in the area of giving or how

  664. about you know absolutely and and so I

  665. think that I think if that if it can

  666. work like that I think I think that God

  667. will be in it and it could be really

  668. quite a fruitful time if that doesn't

  669. happen for you and you just decide oh I

  670. want to go XYZ then also go for it yeah

  671. but as I said earlier I think it's

  672. important to keep bringing God into the

  673. space no matter what your activity is

  674. you know so so even like really Al if

  675. you give up coffee and you're feeling

  676. those

  677. withdrawals and you're feeling it really

  678. tangibly invite God into that into that

  679. space you know even if it's just uh

  680. Jesus this feels really unpleasant you

  681. know to to

  682. constantly take whatever practices that

  683. you're doing and tie it back yeah to to

  684. the Holy Spirit to Jesus to the father

  685. and know that ultimately that's what

  686. you're trying to do you're not trying to

  687. ultimately give up stuff just for the

  688. sake of it you're ultimately hting to

  689. Foster the place of

  690. flourishing um within your relationship

  691. and dynamic with God and I think

  692. sometimes for me for example it can be

  693. that Journey with the Lord um as you and

  694. with yourself as you begin to think

  695. about something for example I thought of

  696. myself that I would like to give up

  697. YouTube you know so that was something

  698. that I just felt okay um this could end

  699. up having a more healthy place in my

  700. life and then slowly as I ponder that I

  701. begin to think about um some of the

  702. audio books that I'm wanting to listen

  703. to and I'm like wow that could be a

  704. great replacement and it wasn't that I

  705. sat down there and went right YouTube

  706. and then what am I going to replace it

  707. with it just as I pondered on it and

  708. then I thought well what else might be

  709. uh and not in a driven way but I was

  710. like okay well maybe some of that time

  711. would actually be in silence and then

  712. actually the third thing that I was like

  713. well and I I hope the last cuz I'm

  714. trying not to have too many things

  715. related to that but was that some of

  716. that time might actually be intentional

  717. time with my family so it might be where

  718. I was using YouTube as escapism after a

  719. long day just to blob out for half an

  720. hour and listen to something hey well

  721. that might be that I'm extra present we

  722. might go on a walk or we might do

  723. something and so it wasn't that I sat

  724. down and thought man I've got to find

  725. three things that I'm going to add into

  726. my life it was just as I spent some time

  727. contemplating wow what will it look like

  728. to pull this out of my life it's just

  729. slowly these little invitations come up

  730. and that doesn't mean I feel really

  731. burdened that I have to every day make

  732. sure it's silence and uh audio books and

  733. uh and you know walks with the family

  734. but it's just something that I feel

  735. invited into and that those will be some

  736. of the practices that I'll add in and

  737. that I think will will bring life to me

  738. and so um you know I I I like kind of

  739. the holistic approach of that that it's

  740. it's actually a season of life so it's

  741. like so getting to the end of lint and

  742. feeling like wow I feel more connected

  743. to my kids you know I wow I know what it

  744. is to have moments of Silence oh wow it

  745. was so helpful listening to that book on

  746. the Holy Spirit that's really given me

  747. some new tools and so so uh yeah I think

  748. that sort of feels like a lovely

  749. invitation um but I didn't sit down on

  750. one 20 minute session and say right

  751. giving up YouTube what three things do I

  752. need it's just as I contemplate and uh

  753. spend some time thinking about it those

  754. things kind of come forth and it's so

  755. okay this is now feeling like what I can

  756. do and probably that's helped for me

  757. further on in my journey of Lent like as

  758. it's been year by year that's become

  759. more natural to kind of think okay Holy

  760. Spirit uh and uh you know combination

  761. with the Holy Spirit and my own thoughts

  762. to come up with something that I think

  763. will be meaningful and so um you know

  764. the first one I was really like okay I'm

  765. giving up coffee and trying to pray more

  766. you know like that was really but that

  767. was helpful and useful but I feel like

  768. it's a little bit more nuanced now and

  769. it's almost like a muscle that I'm

  770. learning to develop a season that will

  771. holistically uh be beneficial yeah yeah

  772. and and and also allowing for the

  773. possibility that after those 40 days

  774. after the lent period there may be some

  775. things there which you've established um

  776. maybe not giving up coffee because I

  777. know people struggle with that one but

  778. maybe also you know man you want me to

  779. keep spending time with my kids after

  780. the 40

  781. days that's a

  782. possibility you might find that that's

  783. so lifegiving that that that that becs a

  784. non-negotiable um not

  785. not necessarily specifically that but

  786. but yeah allowing for the possibility

  787. that that in doing this thing for Lent

  788. you discover something which you like

  789. like you maybe can't live without even

  790. you know something you might discover

  791. some way of connecting with God that you

  792. know like you say whether that's going

  793. for a for a walk beside the water or um

  794. you know spending time in silence or or

  795. whatever else that that you just like

  796. well I don't I don't want to stop doing

  797. that it's great yeah

  798. and so we've talked a little bit about

  799. um obviously those you talked about the

  800. times of prayer what was that called

  801. again what was the name of the four

  802. times of prayer oh that's called um

  803. praying the daily office or or praying

  804. the hours yeah and and it it comes from

  805. a um again hopefully not to freak

  806. anybody out it comes from from a

  807. monastic um tradition where where mons

  808. and nuns would pray um at set times in

  809. fact in some community ities they also

  810. have a prayer time in the middle of the

  811. night so there's those four there's also

  812. a night Vig as well where they get up

  813. and and um and speak the Psalms and

  814. things like that so yeah that's um

  815. praying the daily office or or praying

  816. the

  817. hours yeah that's traditionally called

  818. yeah so I think we've sort of talked

  819. about that we've talked about you know

  820. the potential to add in something with

  821. the reading and those kind of things

  822. silence um giving you know so I wondered

  823. Maybe just uh by way of Us closing if

  824. you maybe just wanted to pray for us

  825. just for a Grace that we would meet the

  826. Lord um in anything that we do choose to

  827. add that uh there wouldn't be an

  828. unhealthy weight of expectation but we

  829. would be able to add things that would

  830. actually uh just be a blessing to us and

  831. our walk with Jesus yeah can I just add

  832. one more absolutely just that might I'll

  833. try and keep it as as brief as possible

  834. one more practice that and thinking

  835. about talking to you about this that

  836. really came to my mind so maybe maybe it

  837. it would be helpful for somebody

  838. watching this um back as I said you know

  839. um we've got this wealth of of tradition

  840. and the chrisan the body of Christ the

  841. body of Christ isn't just here in now it

  842. extends back and extends forward as well

  843. and So within that tradition around I

  844. think it was in the 1600s there's a guy

  845. that um a lot of people may have heard

  846. of Maybe not maybe B but he is

  847. reasonably well known um called brother

  848. Lawrence and his thing was has become

  849. known as practicing the presence of God

  850. and practicing the presence of God is

  851. starts with the idea that God is with us

  852. you know sometimes we get the

  853. idea that the presence of God is

  854. elsewhere and comes into our space and

  855. there is an element of that we

  856. experience that in worship on a Sunday

  857. morning where we we feel God's Presence

  858. at those

  859. times the idea with practicing the

  860. presence is that God is always present

  861. and those those times when we feel him

  862. more particular particularly are

  863. heightened experiences of his presence

  864. yeah they aren't the exception to the

  865. rule that that that God is always

  866. present and so brother Lawrence started

  867. with that supposition that God the

  868. spirit is always present with him and so

  869. the difference

  870. between sensing his presence therefore

  871. is simply noticing that God is present W

  872. so so brother Lawrence made it his

  873. practice every time he it came to mind

  874. to reinforce the fact that God is

  875. present here with me now beautiful yeah

  876. it's lovely and his Ro he was living in

  877. a Christian Community and his actual job

  878. Jo was repairing shoes and washing the

  879. dishes and people started to wonder

  880. about him because he'd be washing the

  881. dishes and sometimes he would just start

  882. laughing well he had so much joy washing

  883. dishes that people some people thought

  884. there was something a b wrong with him

  885. but he was constantly connecting with

  886. the fact that God was present with him

  887. yeah so I thought I just thought I'd

  888. passed that on and I thought in terms of

  889. what I mentioned before about having set

  890. times throughout the day where you pray

  891. I thought perhaps it might help some

  892. people if you set alarms on your phone

  893. so you sit you don't have to sit an

  894. alarm for when you wake up so when you

  895. wake up and then s an alarm around

  896. midday and then s or 12:30 and then

  897. another alarm around

  898. 5:30 and so when you wake up in the

  899. morning your first thing you do is go

  900. God is present H to let self feel the

  901. possibility that God is there with you

  902. right now wow and and that might be you

  903. might be able to do that by by

  904. remembering a time when you really felt

  905. strongly the presence of God and you

  906. might be able to bring that memory of

  907. feeling God's presence into

  908. that moment to therefore go this the

  909. presence of God feels like this and I'm

  910. feeling it now but whether you feel

  911. anything or not it still can be really

  912. helpful to to think or even say out loud

  913. God is present God is here so you wake

  914. up in the morning and do that and then

  915. once you've done that say thank you

  916. thank God gratitude is such a powerful

  917. thing yeah and you go and and so you

  918. might be you might say thank you God

  919. that you're present then your cell phone

  920. alarm goes off at 12:30 and whatever

  921. you're doing as far as it's possible

  922. stop pause take a breath two or three

  923. breaths deep breaths and then go connect

  924. again God is

  925. present thank you for your presence and

  926. then later on on the day 5:30 your alarm

  927. goes off you might be sitting at the

  928. traffic lights whatever stay safe but

  929. again there's this moment where you can

  930. go God is present yeah thank you and

  931. then before you go to sleep at night try

  932. and make that the more or less one of

  933. the last things you do before you fall

  934. asleep beautiful so yeah that was I just

  935. thought it might be helpful to to to

  936. outline a specific okay practice and

  937. that one combines the practice of the

  938. practice of practicing the presence of

  939. God and also the idea of throughout the

  940. day at set times pulling yourself back

  941. to an awareness of God wonderful yeah

  942. could you pray for us

  943. sure heavenly father I thank you that

  944. we have this vast wealth

  945. of Christian knowledge and experience

  946. that reaches through the decades and is

  947. is available to us now and I thank you

  948. that we can draw on that I thank you

  949. Lord that you're calling us always

  950. calling us into something deeper with

  951. you I thank you for this opportunity

  952. this this period of Lent um where

  953. there's an invitation there for us to

  954. intentionally step into those things

  955. which are creating space for you and

  956. into practices where we can draw our

  957. Focus back to you to reposition

  958. ourselves in terms of where you're at

  959. Lord and where you want to be in our

  960. lives so I pray your blessing Lord on

  961. everybody who decides to undertake this

  962. practice that it will be lifegiving and

  963. flourishing that you'll be with them in

  964. any hard moments and help them to feel

  965. that you are there and your presence is

  966. with them and that through that they can

  967. find that deeper place with you and that

  968. deeper place of flourishing as

  969. you bring us into being the people that

  970. you've created us to be pray this in

  971. Jesus name amen amen thanks so much

  972. Andrew no worries thanks for having

  973. me good thank you
